Solve : Chiltern Wove Computer Labels?

Answer»

I bought some of these LABELS today and am having difficulty GETTING them to line up properly. Does anyone know how to set up the label options in Microsoft Office 2007 to GET these to come out properly?I don't have access to Office 2007, however I'd assume it's LIKE most other versions of office. Under the file menu you'd adjust the PAGE setup and change the paper size to the dimension of the labels.

Unfortunately depending on the dimensions any labels can be difficult. If you're running into problems you may want to experiment with just plain paper so you don't waste your labels.

I don't know know how to un-block them so I can RECEIVE their mail MESSAGES. How do un-block these friends and, if possible, how did I block them in the first place? I don't WANT to do this again. ThanksHave you added them to your address book?

Do their emails appear in the SPAM folder? The people being blocked are on my CONTACT list and they do not appear as spam. Thanks

Solve : Data Entry?

Answer»

I have been having difficulty clicking through links on Clickbank. There is a link called create hoplink and when I CLICK it nothing HAPPENS. Clickbank tell me that either my POP up blocker is on or the firewall is preventing it from working. My pop up blocker is not on but I dont want to disable the firewall. Does anyone have any suggestions. I dont have any problems clicking on any other links it is just the create hoplink link at Clickbank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Unfortunately I don't have Citybank, but would it be possible to send us a link to where this link is at? If not or it requires a login to GET to my only suggestion other than what was suggested by Citybank would be to try an alternative browser. For example, if you're using Internet Explorer try FIREFOX (http://www.getfirefox.com)

Solve : E-mail help, please.?

Answer»

A few of my friends tried to e-mail me yesterday (as they have successfully done before) and got a reply saying "E-mail blocked due to abuse". Why is that and how do I FIX it?It's LIKELY your ISP has a spam FILTER setup that's causing them to be blocked. The only WAY this can be resolved is to contact your ISP or e-mail provider and let them know about the issue. It'll also be helpful if you have your friends send you a copy of what they're getting, can be SENT to you in an alternate e-mail address.

Solve : Failsafe way to increase broadband speeds?

Answer»

After our broadband has run at a very measly 300kbs for the PAST three months i'd finally had enough, and rang up the telecom broadband line - after they did a series of tests they agreed with my... prognosis of their system, and after a quick two minute disconnection they turned up my speed to 4mbs. Its true - remember, you are the customer, you are always right. Sometimes, it is neccessary to abuse this privelege.

(nah i was actually polite on the phone. If i had have been rude, it would have been turned up, sure, but when you're polite, they turn it up more. As well as the above, remember to always be polite to poor defenceless indian telephone operators, (specially if you're in new zealand and all your CALL centres are based in india.)I hear ya.

I too am on Telecom here in NZ, and I'm on the ol' Go Large plan they released not so long ago.

300kbs...is that download speed or were you getting 30KB/s download speeds, like I do?

to beat it, I use Speedbit Video Accellerator for youtube, and downthemall firefox extension for my downloads.

What part of NZ are you based in, Bones? We were the last people in new zealand to sign up to unlimited before they pulled the plan when they realised it was destroying their lines

I'm in the far north, *the* WORST place to have internet. 300kps connection, 30kbs download, now we've got a 4mbs connection, and about 600-700kbps direct download (not tried it on a microsoft download yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Me and my local friends use downloading from microsoft to compare internet speeds, its the only way lol )Oh ok, I'm further south in the outskirts of Whangarei, and my connection is similar.

My modem connects at 7600Kilobits a SECOND, but I only see 20-40KB/s in my browser...unless I am downloading from NZ servers or faster servers.

I agree, the MS servers are faster a transfers, I can get 100-200KB/s using the normal downloader in FF, 300+ if I use DownThemAll.

I might have to give Telescum a ring... Good information Bones92, there are several line tests and diagnostics a broadband provider can do that will fix many different cable related issues.

UNFORTUNATELY I'm not familiar with the game, but based off what I see online it appears to be a flash type game. It could be that maybe the latest Adobe Flash is not installed. Try updating at the below link. Otherwise I'd have to assume it's something wrong with the game itself.

Made my old computer with 1gb ram and 3gh p4 HT lga 775 go really slow. Didnt detect anything either. I might have to try it out if I see any sort of benchmarks on maleware removal As I said, I'll never touch, or recommend Norton, but I just wanted to present some more info about it.I agree with broni. what are you reasons you dont like there products?

I have had many problems with the firewall blocking stuff.
or scanning my computer constantly.Unneccessary Bloat...
Ineffective scanning...
Need a crowbar and a jackhammer to remove it...

Other than that it's a fine product...so aside from taking up too much space and not doing it's job and REQUIRING a paid subscription to get virus updates... aside from that, why it's terrific.

Of course, the other side of that same coin is you can say, "an angry grizzly bear, aside from it's sharp claws, quick temper and ABILITY to effortlessly rip a man in half with it's bear bare paws is really quite cuddly and lovable."

On the topic of bears, I might add that they make terrible programmers, even when they get finger prosthetics so they can type easier. They are still the best in their department since they ripped everybody else in half and stuffed them in the closet.

This may partially explain the situation... Norton's developer department is a single angry bear. Also they have skeletons in the closet.

Solve : How many people use Dos Batch??

Answer»

Quote from: macdad- on March 20, 2009, 11:17:23 AM

i know.

but Batch is a language by your choice of whether it is or isnt

Whatever that means. It's kind of like the difference between the truth and a lie, you can believe the truth, or just believe the lie.

Either way your only lying to yourself. So if I WANT to believe a VW Golf is a plane, that's OK is it? Does that mean that if I drive really fast and and shout "v1! .... v2! .... ROTATE!" and yank on the steering wheel a bit, the thing will actually fly? Do tell, Mr MacDad!

No...im not trying to be a mister "know it all"

Im just saying that you can say Batch is a programming language or not by your opinion.

So In my opinion i say that Batch is a language. JUST in my opinion. The trouble is, computer SCIENCE is a subject taught in schools and colleges and if they all say that batch and SCRIPT languages are programming languages and somebody says it's their right to have the opposite opinion, they end up looking like a "prat" as we say in the UK.
True. My point is that it's PERFECTLY all right to say that Windows batch language is an ugly language, or a crude language, or a limited language - these are MATTERS of opinion. To say that it is not a programming language is to make an error of fact.
This isn't really a matter of opinion. It either is a programming language or it isn't.

That's me with my laptop.

Don't really boot into XP on it though.

regarding the hard drive- data storage and other industries often get larger hard drives before they reach the consumer market- for example the IBM 3380. This was the first 1GB drive ever created and it was not that long ago, it was created in 1980. The beast weighed 250 kg and cost US$142,000. Most consumers would require a layaway arrangement for that- or a second mortgage.

that wouldnt work....i know...just joking.

Just NEED a brush Not the best with that either. [kidding]Unless you are I will send it to you if you wanna do it for free[/kidding]if in that case then you would have to pay the shipping(and return) Here is the most case modding I ever did, just for the experience. Not SURE if it'll bring many ideas though.

[ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]Pretty nice but not enough for me So let's see if i've got this so far...
You want suggestions on modding but you can't paint ? ?

I can paint, but not like airbrushing anything really nice. Stickers...preferably Batman or Pinky and the Brain...I thought that was squall with the batman stickersOr you could make stencils. Just put the STENCIL on the case and slap the paint over it. You could even come up with your own. Then print them out, and cut out the designs with an xacto knife.Good idea!

You are going to have some issues with any JOB that requires you
to manage other people. This will hinder your andvancement. You should consider spending some of your study TIME on non-technology material. Like music, drama, child development, politics, religion, and so on.

Solve : some sites don't work?

Answer»

I bought a USED PRESARIO F700 laptop and for some reason I am unable to go to certain websites using it! It doesn't matter what browser I use (I've tried firefox, google chrome, and internet explorer) certain sites are unavailable to me. The sites are any kind of torrent and also sendspace.com. Today I tried to go to allposters.com and none of the ART images would show up. It's like some parental control setting or something but when I go into my computer settings (I use windows vista) under internet options, none of those sites are banned or ANYTHING like that. I know it's not my internet provider because my desktop doesn't have this problem.

I hope this is in the right place. Anyone have soem advice for me? Best thing for any kind of used machine is a FORMAT and a clean install of Windows.

Solve : SMF question in Re. to Private Messages?

Answer»

Hello, I do the Amin for a SMF Forum and from time to time I need to go to the Personal PRIVATE Message of an individual Forum MEMBER.

Do I have that Ability as the ADMIN, an if yes how do I do that ?

Thanks. Loreny

Nope, you cant do that, and, there is no reason to either.

If a member is having a problem with ANOTHER user sending abusive personal messages, have them click the "Report to Admin' button under the message.
It would be an INVASION of privacy to look at members PM's. I dont think there is a single forum system that allows administrators to do this.

Solve : Run Programs from External harddrive?

Answer»

Can someone assist me please

I'm LOOKING at purchaseing a small laptop so I can carry whilst traveling, something like HP Mini 100

So what I'm after is a way to run software from a thumb drive or external hard drive so I don't have to LOAD large software onto the laptop.

Can this be done

ThanksYou shouldent run programs from a FLASH drive, flash drives arent fast enough to do this efficiently.

If your mini-laptop is running Linux or Windows, you should be ABLE to use an external CD drive, if it DOESNT already come with one.

You can buy an external CD Drive here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000100420&bop=And&Order=PRICE

Or, you can copy the contents of a CD from "My Computer" and then copy them to a folder on the thumb drive, and use the installer that you copied to install the programs you with to use. Lots of stuff specifically for a thumb drive at www.portableapps.com

You can substitute pretty much everything but Windows with a portable version.

Solve : Protect the pc from harmful electrical spikes?

Does any one have a suggestion on a good battery backup/voltage regulator? NAMES are all I am looking for, something dependable, reliable, and cost effective.go to any electronics store and buy a surge protectorHe wants a UPS as well.

Have a look here:http://www.officedepot.com/catalog/search.do?No=0&N=5%209190&Ne=100

Depending upon if you have add-on stuff to your rig like: External HD, Speakers, Another Monitor, and such you might want it to increase the Joules rating and the number of Plugs, plus the # of Hours of Battery Backup.
APC is one of the more reliable Co.'s for UPS's...LinkAPC on newegg.comA good UPS will have surge protection built in...

Never use a separate surge protector with a UPS.When viewing specs you want a "Sine wave" output. Some labellers try to confuse the issue in their cheap UPS's by labelling them, "pure square wave"- which is the WORST you can GET!Quote

Why not, please? It would just seem to be another level of protection...
I have to ask, because an inherent danger or problem doesn't jump out at me.

Basically, it boils down to the fact that a surge supressor fixes up voltage spikes and deviations from the standard AC sine wave.

of course- a no UPS gives true sine wave, and most of them are stairstepped. So basically it is simply hard on the Supressor, and will likely cause it to fail earlier conditioning the percieved "bad output" from the UPS; much as it would be a PITA trying to redraw a blockly sine graph on paper with a pure sine wave.

to add to this, when a Supressor "fixes" the power, it generally uses the ground, which just so happens to be going back to the UPS. (of course the UPS likely just connects this to it's own ground, but it's another POINT of failure).

Short story is- it basically destroys the supressors- well, supression.

My thought was to go from the wall A/C outlet, plug in a surge supressor power strip, and then plug a UPS into the surge suppressor strip. My thought was that the surge suppressor can "look" at the A/C power out of the outlet. Since, as far as I'm aware, the suppressor doesn't do anything else to the power, it will pass the power to the UPS, and the UPS can do its thing...

I can UNDERSTAND where the UPS would damage the suppressor over time if the UPS was between the source A/C and the surge suppressor.i had to get a surge protecter after a storm ( electric surge ) blow my mother board

Solve : Opinion Question on what Netbook to Purchase?

Answer»

So I've been in the market for a NETBOOK for a while. I already have a fairly good desktop so I wasn't worried about getting something with too much power. The harddrive was a concern for me though, since I didn't want a TINY 8gig ONE and have to worry about SD cards and such.

So, recently I saw these two for $300. I think I would be willing to drop the money on one of these but I wanted to know everyone else's opinions. The Wind has a bigger screen (which would be nice) and a SLIGHTLY larger harddrive. The HP is more compact and has bluetooth.

So what do you guys think? As a side note, I was also thinking about just minimizing the Windows partition and setting it up so the majority of the drive is a *nix partition. Do you think that something like Ubuntu would run better than XP?

Edit: I suppose I should provide links

Depending upon the amount of memory, you probably would want to stick with XP.

And depending upon your needs, if you really need bluetooth or do you need 40GB more HD space.

Just in my opinion I would go with the Wind, a bit faster on processor and a more reliable brand of Processor(Intel) and larger Hard Drive, the bluetooth wouldn't be neccessary, plus it has an extra USB port.

Both have the same type of RAM and amount so no comment there.

Hope this Helps

More reliable that what???Better known, higher quality than this: VIA C7-M 1.2GHz ULV processorOh, wow! I didn't know VIA was producing CPU's.
Now I understand why you made that comment!!I'm fine with sticking with XP...I'm not too well versed in terminal anyway.

I was already leaning towards the MSI, if only because it has a bigger screen. I'm so used to having a nice big display on my desktop I wasn't sure if I'd be able to adjust to a tiny 8.9" screen (I realize that 10" isn't too much bigger but every little bit, right?).

Anybody have any other opinions? Maybe similar models that I haven't noticed? The MSI seemed to be a pretty good all around deal.

Solve : Computer sometimes doesn't boot?

Answer»

Sometimes my computer doesn't boot when I turn it on. As soon as I press the power button, the disc drive keeps spinning. Nothing comes up on the screen, not even POST. After I try to restart it a few times, it will boot and work normally. Most of the time this happens when the computer was RECENTLY on or I try to reboot it, but it never happens when the computer has been off for a long time, like when I turn it on in the morning. What could be causing this?Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...

I've also seen this when a MBoard has a weak/failing cold solder joint on it...very hard to track down though. What's the age of the motherboard?
If you remove the RAM and start the computer without it, then no beep sound, you BETTER PREPARE for a new.

Follow Patio suggestion 1st, try with a know PSU with the same / higher Wattage.I'll try a different power supply when I can track one down, most people I know have laptops. The motherboard is around 2 years old, and so is the PSU. I can't try removing the RAM and listening for beeps because this computer doesn't have an internal speaker. What I find strange is when it DOES boot, it works perfectly FINE...Could be a overheating issue...

Get some canned air and a brush...and do a thorough cleaning of the inside...especially around the heatsink. Protect your computer from ESD (electrostatic discharge) and above all...make sure the computer's off and un-plugged while doing this.I just cleaned the computer a few days ago, thinking the same THING. Didn't fix anything though.

Solve : hijack question only?

reading through a LOT of hijack posts i see a lot of the following

file missing
unknown file
no name , no file
no file
unknown owner

does that mean that these are all bad and should be taken out , harry File missing/no file means, that file itself doesn't exist ANYMORE, but the registry entry calling for that file, does exist.
Unknown file means, that HJT can't recognize the file. It may be malicious file, or simply unknown to HJT library.
Unknown owner means, the file properties don't show file's creator (suspcious, but not always bad).

Solve : computer has problems starting up?

Hi, my computer is not STARTING up PROPERLY. I have to take off the bios jumper and restart the computer then turn off the computer, put back the bios jumper in it's original spot and restart the computer. I must do this process many times everyday till dos starts up. I have installed all the UPDATES bios software from the manufacturer. these are the specs:
Motherboard Make Intel Corporation
Motherboard Model D915GAG
Motherboard Version AAC64123-302
Processor Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
Memory 4 slots: 256 MB, empty, 256 MB, empty
533/800MHz FSB, Intel 915G Chipset, microATX Form Factor
Maximum Memory: 4.0 GB
Maximum EXPANSION: 4 sockets
Comments: PC2700/3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR.

Once the computer is up and running i do not turn it off until I go to sleep. What is weird is that if a do a restart with windows xp instead of a hard restart it is ok. The computer has no other problems. I if anyone can shed some light on the matter, I would appreciate it.

Solve : Strange 2 pin power connector?!?!?

Answer»

I recently came to own a Zotec GeForce 6200 AGP 512meg video card for my backup computer (the one i let company use..) and it runs games.. OK. But after scouring online and visually eyeballing the card I seen a small 2 pin connector (for POWER, i assume) on the bottom of the card. Could explain why every 3-D game it runs, it runs really CHOPPY. Where do I FIND a 2 pin connector? I looked online and there doesn't seem to be any info on turning a 4 or 6 pin to a 2 pin power connector. The power supply doesn't seem to have one and I didn't notice any new power supplies having a 2 pin connector. If someone knows what to do to give that card some juice - please lemme know!
I put a link below so you can SEE the connector for yourself.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4471400&CatId=2234

The pin connector I'm talking about is under the 3 capacitors and next to the heat sink.It is a "fan header" (a power outlet for a fan). The picture you linked to shows the version of the card with a passive cooler (no fan). The choppy 3d gaming performance is nothing to do with this. This $54 video card is somewhat underpowered by today's STANDARDS.

Here is a version with a fan.

Solve : ps2 problems :

Answer»

Okay so i've had my modded ps2 slim for about 4 years and it's been working FINE. I bought a couple of burned games and it worked fine for about 5 months. One day i played one of the burned games and the ps2 doesn't read it anymore. I cleaned the lens one day and it worked for a BIT until i turned it off to try any of the other games. I think it's a PROBLEM with my laser, but others think the mod chip is the problem. ANYONE know how to help me?Not sure, but I've heard that fake games can damage your lense.

Anyways, you're dealing with copy games, which are illegal.Uh Oh It never pays to be cheapyou *bought* burned games...

Solve : Wanted: Advice for a new computer.?

Answer»

I need a computer that doesn’t use a lot of electricity because I am off the grid and work off a solar system, with a supply of 110v-120volts. I would like a computer that uses less than 200watts including
the monitor.

The computer must also work in an extremely dusty dirty environment, (a greasy junk yard in a desert) so I need a computer with at least the accessibility of a desktop. A desktop would be all right, one that doesn’t gut-down too much power. Perhaps my best bet would be to make up a desktop from components.

Although I would prefer to get away from Microsoft, I simply do not have the intellect to accomplish anything with Linux. Dual boot would be nice, because maybe my mind will expand enough so I could fiddle with the Linux. However I would rather be doing other things than fixing computers.

I have tried the laptop route, however they are not easy to service, (at least for me) and they get so darn hot, you can cook an egg on them.

I still sometimes use my old (1994) IBM Aptiva 486. This is an extremely reliable machine; it has never failed me in 14 years of use. It has been frozen down to minus –40 many times, and still has the original clock battery, and it has been absolutely filthy many times, and it runs like a kitten. It opens and closes lighting FAST, just hit the power on/off switch; There is no fiddling around with, START, TURN OFF COMPUTER, and all that windows and gates stuff.

I am not a rich guy, but I will pay good money for a good machine, or should I just stick with Walmart?
May its all crap now-a-days.
Unfortunately the old desktop guts down to much power, among other things. So what can I do?

Thanks for any advice.

I think with most modern systems you'll need to at least clean them out fairly often in a dusty environment.
I'll check on some components later on, but for now I'm thinking a Via or Atom based PC with an SSD. That should be fairly inexpensive and won't have too many moving parts or fans to draw dust and dirt into the machine as it will also not need much cooling.
How much storage space do you need? How powerful does this machine need to be?
i.e. what is the purpose of this build?
Any size requirements? As for as cleaning goes, these laptops are hard to clean. I myself can’t get this one apart. I never purchased a good service manual. I have taken the inspection plates off and tried spraying electronic cleaner and compress dust cleaner through it, but I know its still pretty dirty inside. And the key board is starting to get sticky. I wish I could just pressure wash it!

I don’t know about these Via or Atom based PC systems with an SSD.

How much storage space do you need?
Between 100 & 200 Gig. I have only used 50 of the 100 gigs I already have.
I would still like to learn how to partition the hard, and try a Linux dist.

How powerful does this machine need to be? “Don’t really know.”
This computer (Acer 5040 )seems to crawl with the following, CPU: AMD Turion 64 ML-32 Processor, BUS Speed:1.800Ghz, RAM:1024 DDR SDRAM, Harddrive: 100 Gig-byte @ 5400 rpm.

This computer is even slow when not on-line, as though Windows is bloated, or something.

I have looked for worms and viruses, updated XP to service pack 3.

I tried to tweaking it with a program called SmokerXp, but once the free TRIAL was over, I had trouble trying to un-install the darn thing.

What is the purpose of this build?
Here is a typical use. I have a satellite Internet connection that does not seem to give you much bandwidth, it's variable, they are probably throttling it down, although I don’t down load music or movies. This connection was suppose to be faster thank a telephone connection.

I use K-melon or Firefox for my browsers, and might have up to 20 websites open at the same time, maybe with a couple Youtube shows loading up, or I will be listening to the radio on-line and I might be writing in Word at the same time with three or four pieces of writing projects going on, as well as doing work with Photoshop and then of course the AVG might be doing a scan, all at the same time.

Any size requirements? For physical size (Box) NO, however I do move the computer back and forth between the house and shop, perhaps once a month, but I can deal with a desktop as long I it doesn’t use much power. (<200watts total) The computer runs for 5 to 10 hours a day.
That's great, lots of useful info there.
Few more questions - what operating system would you like? I know you want to try dual booting sometime, but that can be dealt with later as Linux is free.
Do you need a mouse and keyboard?
What's your overall budget?Greetings

With regards to what operating system would you like?
I am using XP home right now. I have tried my son’s computer with Vista don’t like it.
I do not like re-learning something that worked fine before.
I think problem solving was much easier when DOS was king.
I don’t like the fact that Microsoft licences rather sells a product;
And that they do not release their proprietorship over products they no longer support…!

My question is this, is there more information and is it easier to partition XP Pro than XP Home? If so I will take XP-pro.

Do you need a mouse and keyboard?
I have a nice selection that work from the dump and thrift shops.

What's your overall budget? Eight hundred to a thousand Canadian Dollars.
( 600 – 800 US or 500 – 600 Euro )
XP Pro and XP Home are just as easy to partition.
Difference is, Pro supports the group policy editor, and has a few more features. A general rule of thumb is, if you don't know what the differences are, you don't need Pro.
I'll have a look around for some parts soon for you.Any ideas for a machine that consumes little energy, but can easly be cleaned?A shuttle would have the functionality of a desktop, less than a foot cubed and can be taken apart to be cleaned just like a normal desktop machine, and because they are so small, they require a smaller power supply, which allows for smaller Watt ratings on them.

If you are in the US, this link may help http://us.shuttle.com/

The other path however, are the VIA processors that are designed to run in the most minimalistic conditions.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/

But I would stick with the shuttle.

By the way, if you are not so familiar with PSU's...a 350W Power Supply does not mean it uses 350W constantly, it means it can UTILIZE up to, and including, 350W before it is in danger of breaking.

EDIT: just looked further into that website, and this one here, uses an Intel Atom CPU...and uses no more than 36W at full load, and the PSU that comes with the shuttle...only uses 60W at the most!Quote from: wishforanswers on March 04, 2009, 09:03:31 PM

Any ideas for a machine that consumes little energy, but can easly be cleaned?
Very sorry, I did start on this but have been busy so haven't had time to finish it.
I've been looking away from Atom systems now as you stated your Turion laptop was too slow, so I was looking at something with a bit more grunt.
You need a monitor within this budget, right? If your looking for a laptop that consumes next to nothing with a 3 hours battery life, consider an Asus EEE or a Maplin miniNote.

You can hook up external hard-disks to both machines, in fact their are a lot of cheap budget laptops on offer from places like Carphone Warehouse, some better than others, I personally prefer the kind like some of the tinier sony's as you can stick them in your pocket when your not using them.. But as for sticking XP or Vista on to one, talk to the hand, I would go with Linux..

Hence the Maplin miniNote being a linux based OS with all of 128Mb of Ram and a MIPS processor.

It's all down to personal preference, what are you looking for in a laptop, speed, functionality or just plain old dirty last forever on a 9v charge?

P.S: If your laptop is so filthy try washing your hands and not eating near your workstation in future!

P.P.S: One of the best cleaning method's, not very technical, hold it upside down and shake it!!

Solve : new crash problems with fe analysis program.?

Answer»

Hi All, can anyone help me with this problem please?
I use a memory intensive programme for finite element analysis (Robobat). Recently it just keeps crashing when I MOVE the model around a bit. I have 3GB ram and an Nvidea graphics card. It's only recently happening. Can you advise why this might be please?
It seems to indicate a memory usage problem as when I do a ccleaner after some web activity it WORKS WELL for a bit, but then crashes again. It may be using paging memory but it was never a problem before.

ThanksWhat is your pagefile set at ? ?
How many other apps are running in the background when this happens ? ?
Have you tried closing all tray apps ? ?HI Thanks,
the page file is set at 3070MB. It recommends 4605 but I can't get it to stay at that.
I have 239661MB on the drive.
There are 46 other processes running according to the task manager but I don't know which of those I can dump really. Explorer takes 50056kb but I can't turn that off can I?
I switch off all other progs like thunderbird and firefox and fastcad etc.
I have switched off as many tray apps as I can, just keeping AV email protection and broadband connection.
The task manager says Commit Charge: 637M / 5980M , sounds good but I don't know what it means.
Thanks againEmail protection can safely be turned off...
Is FastCad disabled or off ? ?
That's also a memory intensive app...

DLoad and install StartupCPL by Mike LIN...
It will place a Startup icon in Control Panel and is an easy to use intuitive app for seeing what runs at startup...

You could also DLoad and install Process Explorer which will give you a better idea of what processes are running and what apps they may be associated with.

Both of these are free...
Let us know ...and Welcome Aboard !Hi Thanks for the info. and the welcome.
I'll give these a try and let you know.

I did try at one time a free thing that supposed to clear and reset the memory but I read that this sort of software is not real and makes the problem worse. I certainly didn't see any benefit.

Thanks, FredAny memory management apps can safely be ignored because they are PRETTY much garbage...

Another thing i thought of is check the free space on your HDD and report back with that...

Also regarding the pagefile set both the min and max to the same settings...

Can someone please tell me what it means.
What I need to do next etc..

It seems your laptop may be trying to boot from the wrong device. As you are trying to install an OS I guess you have a cd (or dvd) in the optical device so enter Bios and change the boot sequence to boot from the optical device.

Here is a discussion on the error, I don't recommend whacking the laptop, this extraction seems a better approach Quote

Solve : How to hide any file from others.?

Answer»

Not exactly a "hack" or anything advanced, but comes in handy sometimes-thought i'd share it ;

Just change the file extension of any file to something else.

e.g. Change a text file with passwords in it (although its a bad idea to have passwords in a text file, but as an example) called "pwds.txt" to "pwds.exe". Now no one can open it, unless they know that it's supposed to be a text file.

All you have to do is change the file name back to the original and there you go!Or an even better way to hide files, make a zip file, add the stuff you want secured, add a password to it. Put that in another zip file. Add a password to that. Now try accessing the files WITHOUT entering a password. Changing the filel extension has been around since computers have been around.Quote from: Allan on November 20, 2009, 05:44:59 AM

I wasn't being serious. I have nothing to hide and nobody to hide it from, and if I did I WOULD just put it on a flash drive, thus making it an issue of physically securing the device rather then messing about fruitlessly with attributes or renaming file extensions that are well documented and will hardly fool ANYBODY from whom the files should remain hidden from. Most people who know what they are looking for will find it overcoming little shortcuts as this...
Best rule of thumb for sensitive data is password protecting it...encryption or as BC stated remove it from the machine.Quote from: patio on November 20, 2009, 09:40:16 AM

Solve : Serial to USB adapter??

Answer»

Is there such a thing as a serial to USB adapter?

My friend (who actually knows quite a bit about computers) told me that you can buy this device (SIMILAR to a external USB hub) that plugs into a serial PORT and gives you 2 USB PORTS. This would be a handy thing to have but I sort of don't believe it's possible.

What do you guys think? Is he right?Yes he is right. While it's easier to find USB to serial, there are serial to USB but EITHER they require a chip\adapter box "of some kind" or software since technically, Serial cannot directly communicate with USB or the other WAY around.

Solve : Serial mouse in COM1??

Answer»

I have an old 1993ish computer with no mouse port in it. Could I use a serial mouse? I have a COM1 port, is that the right kind of port for a serial mouse?YepOkay, and what's the differance between a COM port and a LTP port?YOu mean physically or purpose-wise?

COM ports come in two varieties- a DB-15 (I think it's 15) male (wide) and a DB-9 male. LPT ports are DB-25 female (Line PrinTer, I believe it stands for) are for, at least initially, Parallel COMMUNICATIONS in one direction with the printer. Later enhancements 9such as ECP and EPP) allow both bidirectional communication with devices as well as the exchange of state information between the PC and the Parallel device.

Parallel Ports and Serial Ports transfer data just as their names suggest. a Parallel port sends data 1 byte at a time, through 8 lanes, each representing a bit. a clock control signal determines the speed of this exchange, which is generally is quite LOW, compared to more modern interfaces.

Serial ports, while possessing many pins, only communicate a single bit at a time. a LARGE number of the lines in a serial connection are unused, possibly integrated for the future expansion. the Serial transfer speed is generally quite low; usually even lower then Parallel ports, but have been bidirection since their inception. The main reason for such low transfer speeds lies in the nature of the serial ports CONTROLLER chip- the UART chip, which comes in a few revisions. The limited nature of the early chips and the fact that the architecture must remain compatible means that in general the Serial port is one of the slowest external transfer interfaces that a PC has, and in the early days, the only one.

3D3D775144465851534A554E695646533435476 1726455545A 6857656D524457714645566F644752794A48626 93144553173 556236566A595A4A55656E4A33594B427A614D6 C475648526C 5A526C485634746B5632554454724A6D53545A6 A6273745551 6A706B55306445536E74475435743054356B466 3

It is encrypted with: GILA7, Atom-128, base64, string reverse and hex to string

So far I've been using http://crypo.com but to no luck as to finding out the password. The password should be a WORD or a phrase. Thank you so much if you can help me or at least lead me to cracking this password.

Solve : facebook login?

Answer»

My SISTER can not LOG in to facebook on my computer or on her phone after I used her phone NUMBER to verify my account how do you fix this?My guess would be that her # is now associated with your account...that'd be my guess anyways. This may be an extreme measure but you might TRY deactivating your account and then creating a new account for which you USE a different method to verify your account. Personally i wouldn't give out my phone # to be able to use facebook...or any other web service for that matter.

Solve : printer, videos and webpages?

Answer»

I have 3 problems that all seem to be connected to each other.
When I want to watch a VIDEO, on let's SAY YouTube, most of the still photos
of each video are blank, and when I click on a video with a still photo, the title will show up but the video is covered by the rest of the page. Most websites seem to have a ripple or crease in it.
Also, my printer works RIGHT but, when I click to print, I get "error on page" and "shall
I CONTINUE to run script." Whether I click YES or no, the screen locks up.

There are no DOSBox specific games. I believe those are ones that have been tested to run under DOSBox. Copyrights probably have expired by now and if the COMPANY is no longer is business, it becomes Public DOMAIN, then it's legal. Anyone not in this category APPEARS to have $ next to it.Quote from: Computer_Commando on November 24, 2009, 06:00:43 PM

Solve : Interlaced vs Progressive scan?

Answer»

If I WATCH YouTube on the Wii @ 480i, the graphics are pixelated and poor, but on my SISTER's laptop with HDMI @ 1080p, it is stunning, bright, and clear. I did both on the same TV.

So, What's the difference between Interlaced and PROGRESSIVE scan.Interlaced scanning goes back to the early days of analog TV when a CRT would display all of the odd lines FIRST (lines 1,3,5 etc.) then go back to the TOP and display all of the even lines. It happened so fast that the human eye couldn't tell what was happening.

Progressive scan goes from the top of the screen to the bottom line by line.

Almost all computer monitors are progressive scan as are almost all HDTV sets.
