Solve : Windows 2000 DVD burning problems? |
Answer»

Hello,

I had recently upgraded my OS from Win98SE to Windows 2000 (service pack 4). I burn Cds and DVDs regularly, and when i used to do it on Win98, it was done relatively fast, with nothing hindering it, in fact, usually i could burn a DVD, and while doing it, i could listen to Mp3s through my computer, or do other work, and the Burning speed hardly decreased and i never recieved errors. However, after I upgraded to Windows 2000, strange things began happening. I had also bought a new DVD/CD burner, a faster one, so the burning should have, theoretically, been faster, however, i experienced the opposite.

First off, while burning is going on, my CPU is completely consumed, disallowing me from doing anything else, my device-buffer started to erratically jump up and down (10%...90%...20%), and my writing and read speed seemed to decrease by half-speed or more. I figured this was the result of a defective drive, so i returned that one and bought a new one, of a different manufacturer, etc... but the same problems keep happening. I also used many different burning softwares, so i don't think that could be a problem. I also ran a Drive Speed tool from Nero, and it has told me, after performing tests that my dvd drive indeed cannot speed up past about half of the speed it is supposed to go, both writing and reading. Another strange thing, i have a second CD drive, but this is just a CD-R Drive for Reading CDs at 32X speed, and when i did a drive speed TEST on it also, the read speed didn't go higher than about 16X!. Now both of my drives are affected.

Could this be just a problem with Windows 2000 specifically, or is it something more...any suggestions?I have never heard of this. Windows 2000 has been a real workhorse of an OS. How much RAM and processor type?

Have you GOT DMA enabled? I'll bet that is the problem.I don't think that RAM or processor type is the problem: 512MB RAM, AMD Athlon 2600+ 1.9 Ghz processor

However, i discovered that DMA was in fact, disabled. I enabled it for both drives, restarted the comp, etc...and the problem persists. By, the way, I always try to disable any unnecissary PROCESSES like AntiVirus before ATTEMPTING to burn a CD, so i don't think thats a problem. I also did virus scans, spyware/adware scans, and DEFRAGMENTED my harddrive, so i don't think that could be factored either.

| |

If that was the CASE, then, when you boot the computer, you will get a list of operating systems to choose from. It might be that Windows XP will be the default on that list, if so then Windows XP will still start up by itself even if you have installed Windows 2000.

Do the following.

1) At the boot menu, select Windows 2000.

2) Open "System Properties", choose "Advanced" and "Startup and recovery". Set "Default operating system" to "Windows 2000".

3) Edit the file C:\boot.ini and remove all references to Windows XP. (Be careful here, if you remove too much you might not be able to boot up at all.)

4) Delete the directory containing Windows XP.

5) Reboot, and Windows XP will be gone.

If you had some documents and data stored in the My Documents folder under Windows XP, you will not find these again in the My Documents folder in Windows 2000. These will reside in the folder belonging to the user account that was being used under Windows XP (i.e. in the Documents and Settings folder). You can copy them from here to your new Windows 2000 account. Thanks Knut Arne Vedaa!
Sounds easy enough. Solve : Unusually slow? |
Answer»

The way to see is press Ctl-Alt-Del and see the running processes. You can also look at the icons in the lower Right hand corner to see what is going. The best way is to open command prompt and type msconfig and press enter. On the right tab you can see what's in Windows start up. These programs run all the time. No other way of increasing my RAM or any way to make it go faster with the already available RAM?

Also, why is it so low? Do most people have to buy extra RAM when they get a computer?

Manufacturer's cost cutting price war is the answer.

128 MB is fine for Windows '98 as an entry level quantity. 256 MB is better.

256 MB is fine for Windows ME as an entry level quantity, 512 MB is better.

XP can run on 256 MB but it does work a lot better with 512 MB.

So why so low when purchased? Because the manufacturer only allows enough RAM to run the basic Windows OPERATING system with some very light software.

As you add more programs and more files memory use increases because there are more file addresses.

"Windows slows as it grows" is what is said.

Better to simply say, Add more RAM to begin with, and add more still, if the operating system and the motherboard will accept it, and the programs you are using need it.

The manufacturers are at fault really. '98, ME, 2000 & XP will all work well with 512 MB so there was never any point in making 64, 128 and 256 MB modules as if they had only ever made 512 MB modules and 1024 MB modules the price would have leveled out, as the tooling required for manufacturing could have been standardised and all the costs of advertising, stocking, handling, and transport, would have been lower.

Most people specify the addition of more RAM at the time of purchase, if this option is available, and they know something about computers.

They also take care not to have the system RAM shared by the video system and have a video card with its own RAM.

Does that help with the understanding?

What is the make and model of your computer?

I hope you get a laptop with 1024 MB of system RAM.That helped me understand a lot actually, thanks for taking the time to explain.

The make and model is: Dell Pentium (R) 4 1400 MHz 1.40 GHz 128 MB RAM

And yes, I hope I get a computer with that much RAM, at LEAST 512.Good. Solve : Novice - Problem installing W98 over W2k? |
Answer»

I have a Dell CPx laptop that "had" Windows 2k Pro on it when I got it. I WANTED to change it over to Windows 98, which I have a full version disc, along with the SE update cd. The harddrive was partitioned into 5gb and 15gb partitions, in NTFS format.

Using fdisk from a boot disk I downloaded I have managed to DELETE what was a working OS, but cannot get Win98 to enter setup. In fdisk I see the 2 partitions but the smaller one I formatted using the bootdisk shows as FAT12.

As my username indicates, I am NOT very experienced in this stuff. I want to end up with Windows 98SE on this unit, but I don't know how to format the EXISTING drive as FAT 32. I know enough to know I have to at least get the 5gb partition into FAT32 to load the Win98 OS onto. It warned me that there is an NTFS partition that will not be accessible with W98. Does that mean it will not recognize it enough to even reformat it?

Am I going to lose the 15gb partition if I complete the install, or can I still go back and use the fdisk/format utilites and not affect the partition with W98?

SORRY for the dumb questions, but I don't know the answers.

Thanks for your help!!!

kenIf there is an NTFS partition you need to use DELPART to delete it, as you are unable to using fdisk.Quote

If there is an NTFS partition you need to use DELPART to delete it, as you are unable to using fdisk.

That is certainly true with a Windows 98 boot disk, Mac. Solve : Password protect a folder in XP? |
Answer»

I couldn't find this in the search. I WOULD like to password protect a folder on my home network. The scenario I would like to create is where I create share subdirectories on computer A. So when computer B browses to the share \\compA\All Users\compB on computer A, computer B has to provide a password to access the files. I know there are programs one can buy to do this, but they must be manipulating permissions already in WinXPpro. Is there a good step by step guide to doing this? I want the child subdirectories to have the same properties, but once you access the PARENT, you won't be asked for a password. Thanks for listening.

google is your friend, and you can do it to!

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308989&sd=techBut that's not a password protection program... That just prevents someone from editing the files...

FlameWell just don't use Folderlock.

Back to google then. There's LOTS of hits for him to read through:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=encrypt+folderThe encryption is interesting, however, I would like to do a simple password for a folder. Maybe it is not so simple. I understand you can set up a Linux box and learn Samba, but Shirley there is a way in XP.Read on:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=folder+passwordYes, the links in your link are mostly (maybe all) for the software you may purchase to password protect folders. Sell me a fish and I will eat for today, teach me to fish.........If your file system is NTFS you can create a list of users who can access to your folders, files etc...Just right click on your folder and go to Security tab to set permissions...All XP systems on my network are NTFS (I have two seldom used Win98 on there also). OK, I found some Google links that get me started. No specific "how to" answer to my query. I tried what I understood would password the folder and made my test folder inaccessible. I cannot access or delete the folder (mmm, almost sounds like I encrypted it). It does not ask for a password, it is just locked out, and I am the administrator! Now I need more and different help !!! I have looked for step by step type instruction on how to do this and maybe there is so much info that I don't see the needle in the haystack.

Let me be more specific of what I would like to do. I want to use the Syncback program to back up data from Computer B to Computer A. I don't want anyone to be able to modify or access the backup (except me, of course). Syncback has the ability to pass username/password. Soooo, in this perfect scenario, all I need is a password protected folder.

If I use the Windows encrypt, each time I do a backup, I must unencrypt, backup, then go back and encrypt the folders/files, unless there is a command line version that I could automate. The folder password seems the simpler solution.Using NTFS file protection will not ask for a password. It will just disable access to those computer users , who are not allowed to access. Right click on folder and go to Security tab. Under Group or User names window clear all the names (by default there are Administrators, power users etc...) then click on Add and then ADVANCED.
On the advanced window you can select Location where your privileged users are placed. When you click on the Find Now button it will show you all the groups and users from your Local Computer, Domain, Workgroup etc..Pick up the user you want and click Ok , OK. Under Permissions for Administrators check Full Control box, and don't check any of the Deny boxes. Restriction comes before the Allowance!
Now only allowed user(s) can have an access to that folder. To inherit permission from parent folder click on Advanced under Security tab and check box Inherit from the parent...

Hope Helps OK, that makes a little more sense. I have a workgroup at home. If I have an administrator account on each system with the same login/password, I can set up the backup from computer B's admin. I backup user B from computer B to computer A, and I already have an identical user/password for compA's admin. Build a share called \\compA\All Users\compB and right click the compB subdirectory. Limit use to Admin. Does XP know that compB's Admin is not the same as CompA's Admin when compB's admin is coming across the network? Assuming that XP does not care, would this work? Comments please if you see a problem and I will try this tomorrow after work. By the way, cool site, hope I can contribute some time.Well, if you are on workgroup then sure you must have same login/password to communicate with OTHERS and it won't make any sense, identical users are same for any of the computers. That user will have access to the folder. For wokgroup there's another way. Change the username/password for the computer where your folder is stored and let others as they are.
When any other user try to reach that folder s/he will be asked for login/password of the computer where folder is stored.
Permission or restriction I mentioned above is usually good for domains. If you could convert it to domain then you would have great ease working with folders.
Do it in the near future...OK, now you have my attention. Can a domain be an internal class C domain? Can any XP box be the domain's "server"? I am willing, but I am also in need of instructions for this if they are freely available somewhere. If I create the domain, I understand that I would be able to create domain users and that sounds like the beginning of acitive directory. While the work to set this up does not look simple, I am not a total novice. Thanks again for the advice and help. You must have sth like 192.168.0.x which is C class. And run Windows NT, 2000 Server, 2003 Server on one of your machines. It's not so complex as you think. All you have to da is get a book and follow step by step instruction.
There's also enough source on the net about certain topics (active dir, domains, etc....). Take a time and have a look. Everything is horrible outside and you get in to see not so dangerous

| |

Uhh. The letters on the drive doesnt mater unless one has windows on it Did you recently partion the drive or reformated the drive? Are they set as master or slaves?"There are two ways that disk drives get drive letters on a PC. The first kind are the ones controlled by your BIOS. These usually include your floppy and most hard drives, for which drive letters are created when your system is first TURNED on. Solve : format difficulties.....? |
Answer»

i want to format my C drive. Now it has me choose wether under a menu that says "File system" either NTFS or FAT32. NTFS is already chosen. Then there are two empty check boxes which read "Quick Format" and "Enable COmpression". I leave those two blank and press "start" Then it says that windows cannot format this drive. It tells me to quit any windows which display its contents and for me to try again. HOwever Ive quit all windows and the problem still persists..

*censored* U BILL GATES, for ur incomplete operating system with so many holes that ur own computer is a bigger hassle than hackers! If it's over a 32 gig drive it chooses NTFS automatically. If it is less you get a choice. (Speaking from experience here.)It won't let you format it because you are using it. You can't format the C drive if it's in use. And since you sound like all you did was right click and chose format, I'd say it's a safe bet to say you were logged into the computer.

Ok so the solution. Click the start button, and then select RUN. Type in CMD. Ok next you have to use the convert command.

Type this:

convert c: /FS:NTFS

then hit enter. Now it should ask you for a volume LABEL if you have one. Type it in and hit enter. The volume label is FOUND by, opening my computer and right clicking on the c drive, then select properties. There's a section there that says label. If there's something there that's what you type in. If the box is blank then it shouldn't prompt you for a label.

Ok it may ask you for a new label and if does you can put whatever you like in there. It's going to tell you that it will do the conversion the next TIME you start your computer, select yes. Restart and let it convert.

Done.

Good luck.It won't let you format it because you are using it. You can't format the C drive if it's in use. And since you sound like all you did was right click and chose format, I'd say it's a safe bet to say you were logged into the computer. What operating system do you have?

Ok so the solution. Do you have the operating systems CD? If so boot to that and you can format from there. If it's windows 2000 then you need to make the 4 boot disks if you don't have the CD. That way you can boot with them and run the format. I'm not sure you can make bootable floppies in XP, I've never tried.

The reason that you can't format your C drive the other way is because your desktop is open and that's a part of the C drive. It would be under c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\desktop

That's what window is open that you need to close, that's why it wouldn't work, and since you can't close your desktop you have to do one of the other methods.

Good luck.Quote

I would like to format my C: drive. It has me choose, under a menu that says "File system", either NTFS or FAT32. NTFS is already chosen.

Then there are two empty check boxes which read "Quick Format" and "Enable Compression". Solve : ICS? |
Answer»

I had someone network all of my computers together and they were all working fine with ICS and now that I changed ISP's I can't get them to connect to internet or they were connected for a couple of days and then all shared internet connections stopped. The person is not around to help so I thought I'd come here. I also have one computer that is not getting a orange light on ethernet switch, the host and one of the clients light on switch is orange and the other CLIENT light is a blinking green light, sometimes the other client with the orange light will work if I disconnect all the ethernet cables and disable internet connection sharing and connect all wires back up and enable ICS. I have a dial up connection with windows 2000 as host and two 98's as clients. All settings for internet connection sharing are correct. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
troubledoneContact your it manager or isp.......
Another story.......thats is......harry potter...Thank You. I will contact them. He cannot even take credit for his own drivel. He must assume another identity and continue his silliness and babbling. Talk about a waste of a computer......I called my ISP and they said they don't support ICS. So I will need to find one who does. In my family we all need our own computers. If anyone knows of an ISP who supports ICS please reply to this post, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
troubledone Why not just buy a router and be through with ICS and screwy ISP's?Would using a router require a high speed cable internet connection? If so I can't afford dsl or cable internet service right now.

Thanks
troubledoneWhat's the difference between a router and an ethernet switch? And when do you use a router? Or is there a certain type of internet service you have to have to use a router? Any reply would be appreciated.

troubledoneA router is a more sophisticated network device than either a switch or a hub. Like hubs and switches, network routers are typically small, box-like pieces of equipment that multiple computers can connect to. Each features a number of "ports" the front or back that provide the connection points for these computers, a connection for electric power, and a number of LED lights to display device status. While routers, hubs and switches all share similiar physical appearance, routers differ substantially in their inner workings.

Traditional routers are designed to join multiple area networks (LANs and WANs).

On the Internet or on a large corporate network, for example, routers serve as intermediate destinations for network traffic. These routers receive TCP/IP packets, look inside each packet to identify the source and target IP ADDRESSES, then forward these packets as needed to ensure the data reaches its final destination.

Routers for home networks (often called broadband routers) also can join multiple networks. These routers are designed specifically to join the home (LAN) to the Internet (WAN) for the purpose of Internet connection sharing. In contrast, neither hubs nor switches are capable of joining multiple networks or sharing an Internet connection. A home network with only hubs and switches must designate one computer as the gateway to the Internet, and that device must possess two network adapters for sharing, one for the home LAN and one for the Internet WAN. With a router, all home computers connect to the router equally, and it performs the equivalent gateway functions.

Additionally, broadband routers contain several features beyond those of traditional routers. Broadband routers provide DHCP server and PROXY support, for example. Most of these routers also offer integrated firewalls. Finally, wired Ethernet broadband routers typically INCORPORATE a built-in Ethernet switch. These routers allow several hubs or switches to be connected to them, as a means to expand the local network to accomodate more Ethernet devices.

In home networking, hubs and switches technically exist only for wired networks. Wi-Fi wireless routers incorporate a built-in access point that is roughly equivalent to a wired switch.

From: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworkhardware/f/routervsswitch.htm

DellThanks for all your help with explaining the difference between a ethernet switch and a router. I really appreciate it. I just have dial up so I need to know if anyone out there knows of any ISP that will allow internet connection sharing with dial up. Can't afford cable just yet.

Thanks
again,

troubledoneThink I'll go back to semaphore and smoke signals.

This technology is killing me. There's no such THING as an ISP not supporting ICS they are 2 different beasts... ICS set up properly is actually invisible to an ISP
i'm confused as to what yuor problem isMe too. Let's start over. It's been a month and I just came back here to see if I could find the solution to this problem. Didn't realize you all had asked to start over with question. Anyway I thought the same thing about ISP's not having anything to do with ICS. I have had no luck getting back connected with my other computer or computers. I have all protocols set up for ICS and still no dice. I have the host set up on Win Prof 2000 and the other computer Win 98SE set up as client. Like I said everything was working fine until I switched ISP's and then ICS stopped working. I had a friend set it up and he's no longer around to fix so it's up to me. I followed all the instructions on ICS on every website which are basically the same. So what could be wrong? Should there be LAN connections on the other computer. I just have a internet connection and Lan connection on host. I tried to set up a LAN on client but will not work. This is the only thing I can think of that might be the problem. Or maybe something should be fixed in internet options in browser?

On host type of dial up server I'm calling is: PPP;95/98/NT4/2000, Internet. Componets are TCP/IP, File and Printer Shaing for Microsoft Networks, and Client for Microsoft Networks. TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Netoworks are checked. This is on both computers and are connected to a 5 port ethernet switch. On the LAN on the host same protocols except I have connect using my NIC. I do have ICS enabled on host. Any suggestions?

| |

Solve : What to do after rebooting to recover my data?? |
Answer»

I created 4 floppies and successfully booted my computer running Windows Server 2000 after a Blue Screen crash. At the end of the 4th floppy it gave me the option to continue or to quit (F3), if I would continue I would loose all the data, so I quitted. What is the reason to boot from the floppies if I can not recover my data? Am I missing anything, what should I do in order to be able to boot-restart and be able to access the contents in my computer?

Thanks for any help.

MJ
You have your recovery data on a floppy? Not very reliable if one gets floppy gets corrupted. So what are you trying to do with your hard drive? Did you backup your computer to a bunch of floppies?I guess I wasn't clear enaugh, I did boot with the floppies because I coudn't start Windows, then when I got to the POINT where it finished the fourth floppy it gave me two options, Continue or Quit, if I decide to continue it tells me that I could loose all what I have in the computer, so I did not continue, I quitted.

What I wonder is if I would continue, would it GIVE me the choice to Format or it would no matter what?

What I need is to be able to acces the contents in my computer, I did not have any data in the floppies, just the boot disk.

Hope that this explains better.

Thank you anyway.

MJWhat are you going to back up your data to?I do not want to backup anything, just to access my data (all the contents in my computer). There should be an option to repair the installation. At one point during the text based process it should prompt you to repair the existing Windows installation. Do that. I believe the screen for this is when you first get started right after it detects your SYSTEMS hardware configuration.

I believe you press R, and this will do a repair installation. You will see the option if it's available. This should keep all your files and the such, however any system settings you have will be deleted.

The repair option will be on the WELCOME to setup screen. I'm not 100% sure if this is an option in 2000 server but I'm pretty sure.

Good luck.Quote

I do not want to backup anything, just to access my data (all the contents in my computer).

Whatever......

| |

Solve : windows 98+drivers? |
Answer»

I have 98SE installed. I need to be able to install my video card drivers, but Nvidia's drivers from their site say "video card not found."

PC-3GHz P4HT, 1.5GB RAM, 128mb Nvidia FX5200xt.
I'm amazed that 98 is running correctly with that much RAM. Why do you need that much with 98 out of curiosity?

You can go to control panel/system and choose display adapter/ update drivers and direct it to where the files are as an option.Okay, I installed the monitor drivers and then the FX5200, (Nvidia), drivers.
Still is a pain, it says "While initializing device CONFIGMG, Windows Protection error, you may have to reboot."
That happens if I install the drivers, and then I MUST go into Safe Mode and remove it from the Device MANAGER, and then install the VGA.

I need the larger resolution, (1024x768 at least), and at least 256 Color.Check in BIOS and see that the proper option is selected for PCI/AGP. If you reformatted, you might need to reload the MB drivers (if you have them).I don't think I need to reload motherboard drivers, (XP MCE and 2000 pro installed perfectly). The fact that both OS's installed has nothing to do with not NEEDING to re-install your MBoard drivers...
Windows could be running generic drivers in their place which could be making the other driver installation hang as it is looking for the correct MBoard drivers in order to load properly...

patio.

| |
