This is ROUGHLY what you would need for Windows 2000 too.

My computer was designed for Windows 2000 with a 1000MHz PIII and came with only 256 MB of SDRAM, plenty for Windows 2000 to start you off.

The Mainboard can take 3 x 512 MB modules of SD RAM and I have 3 x 256 MB modules giving 768 MB of system RAM in all which is not quite enough on some occasions.

The Video memory is exclusive of this and is only 32 MB to drive a 19" monitor with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution using an NVIDIA GeForce video card.

So if you tell us your system specifications it would be easier to advise you.

I use an 80 GB drive with an 8 MB drive-buffer running at 7,200 rev/min with four partitions.

So the answer to your question should be YES, depending on your hardware and SOFTWARE compatibility and the suitability of your current BIOS.

I bought a new server this week, and it came with XP Pro. I didn't know until I had installed the server that only 10 users COULD connect at one time using XP. We have 13 users, and we were using 2000 Server. It looks as though I'll have to reformat and install 2000 Server, unless I can do an upgrade. Our server is a file server only, we aren't using any Client/Server applications. Has anyone ever tried to upgrade XP Pro with Windows 2000 Server? Solve : Illegal operations in safe mode.?

Answer»

No not at all, sorry sometimes i just assume everyone knows what i'm talking about...which is ironic considering that sometimes i don't even know what i'm talking about.

PM stands for Personal Message. To do this in any forum you just double clik a user's name in a post and a screen comes up that enables you to send a message to that person.

GMail is a Google E-Mail account which can be kinda handy as another account for sending and recieving e-mails.

As far as AOL it's good that it works well for you There are alternatives though, that's all i was pointing out.Personal Opinion (not necessarily the views of this forum or its members):

AOL, like MS, has had a strong foothold on the PC users for a long, long time.

In the late 80's and especially early 90's, they provided a great service to those just beginning to use their PC's power for communications. Prior to this most folks used "bulletin boards" via dial up modems. You'd simply call up each bulletin board, make a connection, then communicated, downloaded and uploaded stuff. You generally needed specific software for each site and many charged 'online' fees for use.

AOL, Compuserve and a few others were at the top in popularity and content. They were relatively easy to use and you could read the latest news, communicate with others (e-mail, chat forums, instant messaging, etc.) and connect to the internet.

However, AOL (and others) wanted you to use their services exclusively (they charged by the minute/hour) and sometimes made it difficult for you to navigate away from their site. In fact, AOL wanted you to think they were the internet!

This rather deceptively built up their subscriber base, especially among NEW and inexperienced users. Deceptive or not, they were very good at making their services easy and their software usually worked as well or better than others.

In those days (and maybe somewhat now) the real cost of PROVIDING dialup internet access was about $0.75/month for an ISP. Since AOL, Compuserve and others were CHARGING by the hour (and eventually unlimited), they were making huge profits. Enough of a profit to eventually buy out other content services including Time, Warner, etc. (does this SOUND familiar?), and eventually kill-off much of the competition.

Today, the surviving content providers/ISPs still provide a valuable service to newbies as they really help them get started. Due to competition, their fees are more in line with other ISPs and they still also provide some of the better content (forums, IM, etc.).

Unfortunately like so many others, their software has become almost unmanageable. They try to provide too much with as little software engineering as possible (lazy programming). They want to keep your attention, so they make it an overpowering part of your PC when you install their software. It's difficult to remove, turn off or even understand the processes running in your system.

DellFond memories of bulletin boards, what ever happened to Gopher anyway?

Sounded like you were talking about Microsoft there, buying out the competition and such.

I have a problem with the entire computer industry. Any new software is designed to run on the latest OS. To upgrade the OS, you must replace the computer. I had a Dos version of AOL once, God it worked well.

AOL, and hotmail seem to do the best at handling spam, a couple of other e-mail accounts I have really suck on that respect.

Will it start in Safe Mode + Networking?I think that I have things working. In the process of trying to get a clean load of w2k it kept asking to put Easy cd creator disk in. When I finally got safe mode running I kept getting a screen that my virus program (grisoft) was corrupted. Since a virus was at the start of this I wanted to reload and run a virus check before anything else. When I tried that the virus program said that easy cd creator was not compatible with the current version, so I removed it. The program loaded and I ran a check that went ok. When I rebooted it worked. It seems like easy cd creator 5.x had something to do with my problem, but in the morning I will still rum the memory check. Solve : Windows wont install, what gives??

Answer»

Recently, my computer crashed, and never worked again. I tryed last known good configuration, didnt work. Reinstalling, didnt work. Why didnt it work? I kept getting error messages part of the way through the installiation saying files couldn't be located on the disk. Solve : Windows Media Player Problem??

Answer»

My computer is relatively new; I do not have a lot of junk on it. When I first got the computer, I ripped a few of my CDs onto Windows Media PLAYER. After having about 500 songs, my computer's sound started getting choppy. The visualizations on Windows Media Player also got choppy. I deleted all the songs, thinking that maybe I have just too much on the computer for it to handle; it didn't solve the problem though. I frequently use Disc Cleanup and Disc Defragmentor to free up space and I have no games or anything of that sort. I currently have no songs saved on the computer but still, whenever I put in a CD, it never plays properly (all kinds of CDs; brand new right out of the package, and burned CDs). When I load my computer up, the little sound that plays when Windows starts (the classic doo-doo-doo) is also choppy. I don't download music and I have virus protection so I don't think I have a virus. It isn't my speakers because I've tried two different sets of speakers. Is there anyway to get my visualizations and music playback right again? It used to work so perfectly :-/

Thanks for any help you can offer. -MattThere are things as bad as viruses that can slow down your system.

Download and run

AdAware
Spybot
CCleaner
Ewido

All are free, just GOOGLE for them. Let us know what you find.I downloaded all 4 of these programs.

AdAware and SpyBot installed successfully.

Ewido pops up with an "NSIS" error when I try to open the installer. CCleaner begins the install, and while it is installing, the whole setup just disappears. No files were made in the programs folders and no icons show up anywhere.

I downloaded these two programs from multiple sources, each resulting in the same errors. Is there a place you recommend I get these programs from?http://www.ewido.net/en/
http://www.ccleaner.commatt328........
Quote

Ewido pops up with an "NSIS" error when I try to open the installer.
This could be the result of a failed download or corruption from a virus.

So , try this ......Turn off your system restore feature ........then reboot into SAFE mode and run your anti virus program from there.
Be certain your anti virus is up to date as far as subscription and virus definitions . Once you have scanned for viruses .....try and install Ewido again .
Then I would run SpyBot .........

let us know how it goes .

dl65
Alright well props to you guys for the safe mode idea. All four of the programs installed and ran properly. Everything is clean on the computer now but only one problem... I still have playback issues. I've done everything the Windows Help Section has to suggest to get rid of the choppy playback. What HAPPENS now is when the computer first loads up, it is choppy. The choppiness goes away slowly after awhile until it is perfectly clear. So now I have clear music again, but I have to wait for the computer to like "warm up" for 5 or 10 minutes in order for the music to work properly. It also gets choppy again when I open another program (such as Internet Explorer) but it never used to do that. Is that a RAM problem? All I want is to be able to play music while I'm working :-/Shutdown all the little background things running in the right hand side of your taskbar.
Now try & play some music.
Does it play?
Then just re-boot to get back your normal running junk.
Do you have Norton installed?I have the full version McAfee installed. Closing down everything isn't making much of a difference. Maybe next time i'll just put the extra 50 bucks or so in to have the RAM upgraded haha I'm at 256, I don't think it should be a problem to play music but I'm running out of excuses. Is the visualizations on Windows Media Player and the music just too much to handle on a 256MB RAM computer while having instant messenger and Microsoft Word open?Quote
Is the visualizations on Windows Media Player and the music just too much to handle on a 256MB RAM computer while having instant messenger and Microsoft Word open?

I can do that perfectly on a PII-400 with 128 RAM and WIn 98 or 2000, no problem.

If you are running XP that may be an issue, but I suspect something else. I have increased icon cache size value to 4096 and later to 8192, but the error message is not changed. I also rebooted the computer to changes be accepted, but nothing!

I am still without solution!!

Please help!!

Quote
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. Then I use the same shortcut from desktop and dragg-drop it to quick launch. After that action I see error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item!". Then I dragg-drop it again on desktop and it works normally again (when I start it from desktop).

Have you somehow locked your taskbar with a 3rd party
program?

I think no, because taskbar icons on the right side of taskbar (near clock) work perfect. Just quick launch icons problem.

Start in safe mode and try them?

Yes, I have started it in safe mode with network options and I see the same message when I start quick launch icons. I have Windows 2000 on the same lap-top and quick launch icons work normaly with that OS.

Is it happening to all taskbar quickstart icons?

Yes, it is happening to all taskbar quick launch icons. The output message you can see in answer on your first question!

Hi Mac,

For the beginning thanks a lot for your support.

But unfortunately I have to disappoint you again. I tried to send you print screen of some installed PROGRAMS in my lap-top. But it seems it is not possible to do on this way. So you have to trust me that service pack 2 is alredy installed on this computer.

I write also few sentences for general description of my quick launch problem. Quick launch icons have worked properly when XP has been installed in this lap-top. But before one month I had problems with one business application which I have installed. That application has occupied whole C system disk of my laptop (full capacity of C disc). It should not happen because that application was not so huge and I had enough place on hard disk. Unpredictable error has occurred. I could not shut down lap-top from that moment; it was possible to do just physically on button. So I had to disable hibernate option to free some memory on system disc. After that action I could normally shut down the notebook, and after first restart C system disc occupation size was OK. Everything was OK with restart, hibernating and shut down of notebook, but this problem with quick launch occurred from that moment.

I suppose that you have full description of my problem now! It makes me more and more nervous. Sometimes I need fast start of some applications over quick launch, but it is not possible… Error message is the same every time.

If you have some proposal(s) please write. Everything except reinstallation of XP is acceptable, because I do not have official rights to do that on this lap-top.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

As I have written I do not have rights to reinstall Windows on this lap-top, because it is official one. I did not perform anything regarding CHANGING processor speed on it.

I also think that there should be some solution for this quick launch problem without reinstallation. In all documentation I analyzed this days is written that DESTINATION path for quick launch is in folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

There are quick launch icons present in this folder in my home PC and it works perfect.

I checked quick launch paths in afectted notebook and I noticed two quick launch paths:

1) C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

2) C:\Documents and Settings\\Cookies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

It is possible to start (left mouse double click) quick launch icons in folder number 1. But if I want to start icons from folder number 2 there is the SAME ERROR MESSAGE like I receive from desktop quick launch starting.

When I see location of quick launch icons form desktop (right mouse click on desktop quick launch icon->properties->general) I see its location in folder number 2.

Is there any way to change target of desktop quick launch icons from folder

C:\Documents and Settings\\Cookies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

To

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

I think it is solution (without reinstalling Wiondows) of my quick launch error message: Windows cannnot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item.

Is it maybe virus (or something) what forwards me in Cookies folder???

Thanks

Hi all,

I fixed the quick launch problem. Now it works perfect.

I have tried to delete Cookies/Aplication data folder and move it to recycle bin. Solve : Help! My System Got Screwed?

Answer»

Hey all! I really need assistance. My system got screwed up and I cannot boot window98 (SE) anymore. I have reasons to think that to fix it I would need to either
- run windows in safe mode (so i could access the registry or a specific windows option)
- find the way to modify the registry in DOS

problem is windows doesn't want to run in safe mode. When I try it, it prints something like (more or less) "windows98 copyright 1999-2000 etc", just like a normal boot, except it stops there and then return to the usual "c:\"
, waiting for me to type things...

im no good with DOS commands, but im sure if i could get into the registry to delete the key from where comes the whole problem, that would fix it. I tryed some things, but with no success. When I type regedit, it asks for the files "system.dat" and "user.dat", which i dont know where to find. Any help would be more than appreciated, i need my computer back!system.dat and user.dat is your registry. Your user information is stored in user.dat and the system information is stored in system.dat.

User.dat is stored in the Windows\Profiles directories and system.dat is in the windows directory.

Can you please aloberate on how you "got your system screwed up?"

It sould like you deleted your registry.strange... im ABSOLUTLY sure i didnt deleted my registry, but i couldnt find system.dat and user.dat anywhere on my computer...

if that can help, i screwed up everything by adding the key "MustBeValidated" in hkey_local_machine/network/logon (if i remember correctly)... now i just cant boot win98

i would just need to remove that key, how can i do that from DOS???Kaietnap.....Perhaps you could tell us what was going on
that prompted you to edit the registry in the first place .....It usually helps to EXPLAIN what you HAD been doing prior to the issue as opposed to the result .......

Let us know

DL65

well, i added this key to prevent other people from using my COMP (in PARTICULAR my sister). i had heard it was the only way cause i have win98, which lacks a secure logon system.

since then, my computer asks me a user name, a password and a domain to log on when i boot it. but no matter what i write in the domain field, it wont let me log (not too sure but i think its because there is just no network where to verify the information). i dont know too well the way win98 login systems works, but i know (i have tested it), that theres an option in the settings panel that fixes it.It has been a while since I used 98 but if MEMORY serves, all you have to do when you get the logon screen is click the cancel button and you get in anyway, your just not allowed on the domain.

GaryQuote

It has been a while since I used 98 but if memory serves, all you have to do when you get the logon screen is click the cancel button and you get in anyway, your just not allowed on the domain.

Gary

ok i got the problem solved.. thx anyway for your help

Beginning Dump of Physical memory"

It sat there on a BLUE screen for a while, and when nothing happened, I restarted the computer and it's been fine.

Can someone tell me what that message means, whether it needs to be checked (something possibly I could do as a computer "novice"), or whether it needs a visit to a computer professional.

Thank you!Does this happen EVERY time you start the computer? Does this only happen when you try to open AOL? Please tell me.... We might have a way around this...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I got the message for the first time at start up on SATURDAY and again this morning, two days later. It does not happen every time the computer is turned on.

The order of events starting Thursday night was:
download aol 9 security
delete aol 8 plus
install mcafee virus and firewall (with norton disabled)
run scans, all aok
uninstall norton internet security
uninstall norton system works
check win update page (no updates)
(service pack 4 for 2000 Pro already in place)
run nti back up now for C and D drives

Friday everything ran fine.

Saturday morning, when powering up the computer, my finger slipped and I accidently hit the power switch twice. The power button however, cannot turn the power off, it has to be done from the Start menu.
That was when I got the error message.

I did a Google search for "wait operation attach process" and it came back with many hits, some I sort of understand and some that I totally cannot understand.

Thanks for your help!

Lets TRY a system restore.... Click Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore .... When you click on System Restore, a new window will pop-up... Select Revert your hard drive to an earlier time ... Solve : reinstall won't work - win 98?

Answer»

Hi,
I erased windows 98 (by using the command format c:). When I use the boot disk from a, I can GET to msdos prompts. However, when I try to run and install windows 98 from cd rom (using f:setup), nothing happens (bad command or file name).
E: used to be my cdrom DRIVE but it appears to have been bumped to f:, but I assume this is irrelevant.
The cd will spin, and if I run DIR, it will show folders but no files.... a command of setup.exe will not work either. I have a sony cdrom, but sites say the GENERIC driver in win 98 boot disk should run it... and like I say it spins....Can someone please help?Have you used this Windows 98 CD before? It sounds like the security device inside the CD is preventing you from using it...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I used it once when I reinstalled over top of itself... and it worked, but I still had problems (e.g., outlook and EXPLORER would not run, error messages, etc.) so reformated c and am now stuck.
The only thing is that I no longer had my own win 98 disks, so borrowed a friend's burnt copy.... I can't take it in for repair as I don't have the STICKER either... There is nothing else I can use as I can't purchase it again as it is no longer sold, and my operating system can't handle xp or even 2000....I checked my old copy of Win98. There is another "setup" in the Win98 directory.

Try running: f:\win98\setup

This may get you going again.

Good luck. I think that its the security device that Microsoft has installed that is preventing you from installing...

[glb]Flame[/glb]

Solve : Trouble w/ Office 2000 after HDD upgrade?

Answer»

I upgraded my computer to a BIGGER HDD. I copied the files from the old drive but they don't work. I had to reinstall Windows, Explorer and lots fo drivers for modems and display etc. Office 2000 programs don't work and neither do a lot of other programs like AOL and ACT. I GET two different messages both along the lines of "Program is not installed properly or you need to install from the original location".

Because I reinstalled Windows (Win 98 SE) I lost all the upgrades, drivers, preferences and improvements I had downloaded from MS website. I'm worried about losing all the same things from other programs. Office 2000, ACT 6.0, Quicken 2000, Turbotax and all the preferences etc. that go along with them.

How can a person add a new HDD and copy all the stuff without all these hassels? Maybe there is some kind of software that knows where all the files for each program are stored and moves them to the new drive in the right directorys so they can be found.

Computer is 1.7 GHZ Pentium 4, 512 MB Ram, 2 HDD (Both IDE/ATA) - 30 GB (old drive) - 80 GB (new drive), CDROM, Best 56K modem, Nvidia graphics card and Sharp LCD. display. Usually finding the files is not too difficult, they should be under the program folder and will most LIKELY be carrying the name that you gave them when saving your work. What you can try to do is copy the entire program folder and put it under your new installation of Windows, but I can't guarantee the programs will actually still work afterwards.

If you do not have two PCs in your posession try mounting them both in the same system as Master/slave.

The only exception I can make is for Office; it most likely saved all your documents under "My documents".The only way this would have worked was if you would have cloned the old drive to the new drive as is...you cannot simply "copy" a program's files on to a new build and expect it to run.
If you haven't wiped the old drive yet then simply hook it up again, FORMAT the new HDD, and then boot the machine using the CD that came with the HDD and there will be an option to clone your old drive to the new one.
After that simply remove the old one and hook up the new one as master and you should be good to go...

patio. 8-)
