Solve : 2000 Prof won't fill desktop? |
| Answer» <html><body><p>A friend brought me his laptop that had recently been reformatted with Windows 2000 Professional. His major problem is that since reformatting, the <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/screen-25632" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about SCREEN">SCREEN</a> that comes up, (like IE) will not fill the desktop. It has a 2" border on all four sides. I have tried adjusting everything except the Bios. Restoring the registry won't help because the reformat was recent. <br/><br/>Any suggestion how to make the windows fill the screen? The little boxes at the top right do nothing.<br/><br/>The other problem he had was getting his computer to print to file. No OS is required.If you're getting a disk error with the diagnostic software...both NTFS & FAT type partitions, sounds like you have a hard drive problem.<br/><br/>I'd partition the hard drive. That's one way to know if you have issues with the disk surface. 20 gig isn't so big so you can watch the partition process. If you get an "allocation error" dump the disk. <br/><br/>No reset the BIOS to the default? Strange...<br/><br/>You might remove the battery to the motherboard & leave it out for a few minutes. Solve : 2000 user can't get back on the net? |

| Answer» <html><body><p>Hello everyone, I'm not too computer literate so take it kind of easy on me. <br/><br/>First off my computer is a Direction SPL 300 (old I know), 300 mhz, pent 2, 128mb RAM (currently, upgrading soon, like within a few days to 224mb), 100gb HDD, Windows2000 Prof.<br/><br/>I recently (yesterday) <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/installed-499454" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about INSTALLED">INSTALLED</a> a new HDD (100gb) in my computer and used (sorry for name dropping) MaxBlast 4 to copy each partition from the old HDD to the new one and everything seems to have copied over fine, except when I start the computer with the new HDD it goes all the way to the <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/windows-22662" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about WINDOWS">WINDOWS</a> 2000 login (Ctrl, Alt, Delet) screen. I tried logging in using both administrator and my active user account. And after typing in my username and password, the computer changes to the normal "loading your personal settings" screen and then immediately jumps back to the login screen. Does anyone know of a reason for this? I am asking the same question on another forum, and there suggestion was boot in <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/safe-634049" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about SAFE">SAFE</a> mode, which I am going to try tomorrow (26AUG06) when I am off of work. Solve : XP fails to boot? |
| Answer» <html><body><p>Whenever i boot up the pc, it only gets to the windows xp boot screen and then stops. So i have to manually switch off. When i boot up again it goes onto the safe mode select screen. If i select "last known good configeration" it will boot up normally, except that found new hardware pops up,(this does'nt happen every time) eventually installing Matrox Graphics Millenium G200 AGP. I can then use the pc as normall. Then to push the Pentium I and II with MMX users to buy Pentium III and 4s Windows 2000 doesnt have MMX support. Infact MMX just slows down video preformance under Windows 2000. I havent tryed XP yet though. Also I might just be crazy but if you think about it it makes perfect sence. Even if my sentinces dont.Without a doubt, Windows XP professional is (at last) a far superior operating system to the other dross MS has pushed out for home users. The only real drawback for me is its relatively heavy hardware requirements. So it's Win98SE for older hardware and WinXP Pro for newer hardware. For desktop systems I wouldn't consider ANY other MS O/S.I would half to agree with you there. But just one prolem... The only copy of XP i have is in Aribic. last time I buy software from goodwill. Since that occured (Christmas) - when we run a defrag it goes so far and then it says that 'something is writing to the disc' and starts over. | Answer» <html><body><p>Hello, hope you can help - apologies if this is an obvious question, it's all still fairly new to me.<br/><br/>My other computer (which is about 5-6 years <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/old-585313" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about OLD">OLD</a>) suddenly switched off last night and now won't boot into Windows2000 via safe mode or via CD. <br/><br/>It's gets to the Windows <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/start-239994" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about START">START</a>-up screen - pauses, then brings up a blue screen which includesthe text:-<br/><br/><a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/stop-1228105" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about STOP">STOP</a>: c0000145 (application error) failed to initialize properly.....click OK to terminate...etc<br/><br/>It tells me about safe mode, uninstalling any new hardware and to disable BIOS memory options.<br/><br/>The only thing I noticed before it went off last night, is that the clock read December 31st <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/1997-282414" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about 1997">1997</a>! I've been trying to boot up this morning and when I went into the BIOS, the date was wrong again.<br/><br/>Could this be the battery? Anyhoo, bek will need a legit copy of Windows, if he wants the updates to work. Sorry, bek. Anyways, if you have any earlier copies of Windows, you can just buy the upgrade version, and insert the earlier disc when it asks for a previous version. It doesn't have to install the older version - it just has to be a full disc.<br/><br/>If you don't have an earlier disc, it's OK - you just need to get the more expensive full disc. And in the meantime, I recommend backing up any files you need, because I would recommend a format right before you install the legit XP. Don't format now - but backup your necessary files. The reason I suggest a format is so that any traces of an illigitemate copy can be removed. If there's even a hint, Microsoft will reject you again and snub you if you call Tech Support. So let's get it cleared before the install.<br/><br/>Mandatory reminder: Formatting a drive destroys all files on the hard drive. No exeptions.Quote</p><blockquote>Two things:<br/><br/>1. It is a security feature of Windows XP and Windows 2000 to keep someone who steals your computer from accessing your files.<br/><br/>You might be able to purchase a used power supply of the same kind through eBay (or at least purchase a computer of EXACTLY the same Dell make and model number). That way you can have a hardware technician install the power supply you purchase in the old computer or the hard drive in the used computer you purchase and get it working just long enough for you to have windows no longer make the files private. <br/><br/>DocWhat model Dell is this? It's hard to believe that Dell does not have a power supply for this. I can still get new ones for 7 year old Optiplex at a reasonable price through them.
