Solve : windows nt/98 dual boot changing partition drive letters? |
Answer»

I have an old Dell precision 210 workstation that came with windows 98 se and Windows nt sp4. It had one hard drive partitioned into fat16 for 98 and ntfs for nt. I have an expensive 3d cad SOFTWARE package that I used for years. My hard drive filled up and so after a long battle, I have a second hard drive installed, same type as the original, but larger capacity.
I had all kinds of issues getting everything to work, but now i can reach all the drives, usb and cds. Now the problem.

Doing all of this I now have a: floppy drive, b: nothing, C: windows 98, D: nothing, E: windows nt, F: second hard drive ntfs G: fat16 H: cdrom.

I cant afford to update the software, the company wont do anything for me unless i pay for maintenance for the last ten years. I need the software, But the software files for it to load look for D:..... to run it. The files are on the E Drive, and I cant reinstall them.

I want to use the D: drive, which does not exist,( error message D:\ is not accessible, volume does not contain a recognized file system) by swapping the E: for the D: letters. From what I read this is not possible. I don't know how to go into the software and change the pointer from D: to E:

Any suggestions? I am fairly good with computers, not a programer, but I got this far on my own.
Thanks in advanceWow, that's ancient time, my friend Really can't HELP you there since I all but forgot those days...
But, just out of curiosity...is that 3d cad software so special that you can't use something similar? Like free https://www.nanocad.com/ or https://www.freecadweb.org/?Hi:

Yes I started with it in 1985 bought my lisence in 1997 . It was SDRC now it is owned by Siemens. Does full blown, 3d solids, surfaces, and mechanism calculations. was $16,000 NEW back then. and have used it since, Works great for my type of design, generates 2d drawings automatically, can update using variables. and i have 35 years of PROJECTS on it that I still have to access.

I grew up with dos then unix then nt to what it is now. Thanks for the input.
You should be able to change Drive letters in Windows NT with Disk Administrator.thanks for the tip. I had to dig to find the file, read thru an explanation online, opened the file, and it doesnt really tell me if I can swap a drive letter. I can assign one after formating. but doesnt seem to indicate changing a drive letter after it is assigned.

the D: partition is open nothing in it doesnt show a format. just size. thats the one i want to swap with the E:

Again Thanks for the reply;OK, but if you put that disk in other pc, can you access the data or not? Maybe the disk itself is faulty (got bad sectors...)? One option is also virtual os where you can install that sdrc-if you have install files, of course.Quote from: hiqserv on December 26, 2020, 05:32:40 PM

thanks for the tip. You can also access this by right-clicking the disk volume. Solve : BROWSERS? |
Answer»

INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER

I have been advised not to use IE any more as it now not being supported by MS. I have unpinned it from my task bar so I don't use it by mistake. However, should I go further and disable/ remove it from my desktop? If 'yes', can it be disabled RATHER than completely removed?

EDGE BROWSER

I know how to check if it needs to be updated but does MS update this AUTOMATICALLY in the background?

AVG BROWSER

I have been advised to 'dump' this as it is likely to cause me problems (not specified!). Is this correct? Not sure that I need it ANYWAY as I have CHROME browser and Edge already so probably don't need a third! If the advice is to 'dump' AVG, does this mean simply 'not using' or should I disable /remove from my system?

Don't worry about IE. If you don't want to use it, don't use it. If you delete the icon from your desktop that's all you're doing - deleting an icon.

Yes, Edge will auto update with Windows Updates.

Don't know about AVG browser - not familiar with it. I use Firefox and Chrome.

The only advantage to uninstalling browsers is to save hd space. They don't do any harm just "sitting" there unused.Steam Games Desktop shortcuts rely on Internet Explorer being installed to work. I discovered this when I uninstalled IE. I didn't relate the problem to that at first but it was the case. The shortcuts worked again after reinstalling IE. Perhaps best to remove the IE shortcut only and leave it at that.

| |

Solve : ANTI VIRUS? |
Answer»

I am using a paid version of AVG but have been told that Windows Defender (part of my w10) does an equally good job and anyway shuts down at start up if it detects that other anti virus software is running. Solve : Does Windows NT 3.51 need DOS?? |
Answer»

Hi,

I know Windows 3.1 must have MS DOS, but i was wondering if the NT versions (NT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51) also need DOS?

I want to use Windows NT 3.51 so i need to know...

AdamNo, it doesn't, it installs stand alone. What about Windows NT 3.1 & Windows NT 3.5?
Are they standalone or do they need DOS?

And do you know where i could get DOS by the way?

Thanks for your help Quantos. I don't remember if 3.5 needs an OS under it or not. I seem to remember that 3.1 does.

I have no idea where you could find DOS. It's not sold anywhere that I know of. You could try eBay, but whatever you buy there could be a pirate or be infected. That's too bad cause I also have Windows 3.1 which i want to install but it must have Dos to work.
Quote from: Quantos on June 25, 2009, 07:17:49 PM

No, it doesn't, it installs stand alone.

Thanks, that's what i NEEDED to know. The hard part would also be getting drivers. Unless you have some old hardware lying around.Quote from: Cityscape on June 25, 2009, 05:46:15 PM
I want to use Windows NT 3.51 ...

The question I'm dying to ask is... why?! Just for fun...
And to run old games on.

Quote from: Quantos on June 25, 2009, 11:06:25 PM
The hard part would also be getting drivers.

NT 4.0 drivers should work, right?Quote
NT 4.0 drivers should work, right?

No, unless the manufacturer says that the driver will work for ANOTHER OS then you should NEVER use a driver for a different OS.

NT 4.0 was very different than any other version of NT, and definately won't work for a 16 bit OS.Quote from: Quantos on June 27, 2009, 01:02:49 AM
NT 4.0 was very different than any other version of NT, and definately won't work for a 16 bit OS.

Okay, but NT 3.51 was 32 bit.NT 3.1,3.5,3.51, 3.51+Shell pack*, NT4, are ALL 100% 32-bit applications. they can run 16-bit applications via the use of the virtual 8086 features of all processors since the 80386.

Using ANY version of NT for old games will NOT work. DOS games run no better- in fact, probably much worse - under older versions of NT then they do under XP/Vista. Why? Well, it wasn't a consumer OS until XP... business don't care if DOS games work- they might have some old apps running via DOS but for the most part these are "businessy" text applications that work find under the NT VM.

Driver wise, an NT4 driver *might* work with 3.51, since a lot of NT4 drivers were really just NT 3.51 drivers made "shell aware". Additionally, for the most part NT4 drivers were tested using the beta of NT4 which was the (soon to be explained) "shell option pack" for NT 3.51.

For the most part, it depends on the device. In fact, you'll be lucky to find a driver at all. Best results will obviously come from using a driver designed for the right version. Just remember that windows 3.1 drivers will not work- and neither will Windows 95 drivers.

explorer shell introduced with windows 95. It fell behind schedule though, so aside from a few beta's it wasn't actually released. It did, however- change NT 3.51 into NT4 version-wise (in an attempt to prevent applications from getting confused over versions and having to determine if they can actually use the features present in the shell pack). In reality, NT3.51 and NT4 are no more different then NT 3.1 and NT 3.5, kernel wise- of course there were a few changes, which are inevitable, but for the most part it wasn't a huge departure in any department other then the GUI.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 27, 2009, 12:22:21 PM
Using ANY version of NT for old games will NOT work. Answer»

I use CC4 for scanning. Solve : Can't install .NET Framework 2.0: Can't open file "vs_setup.msi"? |
Answer»

It didn't...good call BC.Holy ****, man! First, my installer clearly says "Service Pack 4". Secondly, it does say "Service Pack 4" in Computer Properties. Thirdly, even cmd and winver report Service Pack 4. Fourthly, I never said that if I run Windows UPDATE, it will surely install Service Pack 4, if I have no service packs, it will just install the next one, and the next one, and the next one, until the latest one is reached (at least that's how it worked under XP, Vista and 7 for me), but what I wanted to be understood from that was the fact that I would have known that the OS wasn't SP4 and would have downloaded myself SP4 from Microsoft's website and install it manually right away, if the OS wasn't SP3. Fifthly, I said that the OS is SP4 in 3 posts already. OK, you didn't understand the meaning of "not to be", but to insist is annoying. I *was* dumb. I'm not, I've experienced enough computer problems in the last year I haven't posted here, so there really is no reason to insist on something. Sorry for my blowup, but it is annoying and we are getting nowhere by insisting on something. Need an attachment to go further in diagnosing this? That's going to waste another day of you waiting for me to give the attachment and for me to get to the computer and make a screenshot and not having that kernel extension installed.

Anyway, I found out that .NET Framework 2 was actually installed by Windows Update, SP1 was the one with the problem. If you're wondering, yes, I would actually like .NET Framework 2 SP1 installed, to reduce the virus and malware entrance points a bit, as I don't have any antivirus app installed yet.You have gotten very touchy because we asked questions to assist...

Sorry for inquiring and Best of Luck.

BTW .net frameworks are not all cumulative...just so you know...I interpreted "if it wasn't, it would have gotten installed by Windows Update when I updated it." as "I didn't install it myself, but it would have been installed by Windows Update, so there is no need for me to verify that it is installed". If I understand correctly now it was slipstreamed on the install disk. So that's not an issue.

I did find This, which could be the cause of the issue in your case. You yourself would have gotten very "touchy" if you would have been asked 4-5 times something you answered when you were asked the first time. And sorry to tell you the truth, but all you done in this thread was to praise BC_Programmer and push my nerves to see when I blow up, by talking coded ("Windows perchange") or by giving dumb advice. Trust me, if I would have had my USUAL antivirus, it would not had blocked the installation of the .NET Framework and even if it would have wanted to do it, it would have asked me if I want the same thing or I want the downloaded installer to run (ESET Smart Security is the antivirus). And don't come now and say "not necesarily", because it *is* necesary. That's how ESET works and was meant to work, reason why I don't use anything else, except ESET products. Also, if by some wierd reason, ESET doesn't ask you, there are settings for that and you can enable the asking.

Just some advice: be less arrogant and stick to the point of the discussion, see how nice we'll work out and how fast problems and threads will be answered, if you really think you should participate in them, as most forum Admins don't, except when they are really needed. No offense. But you should seriously try taking this advice.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 25, 2017, 07:10:29 PM
I interpreted "if it wasn't, it would have gotten installed by Windows Update when I updated it." as "I didn't install it myself, but it would have been installed by Windows Update, so there is no need for me to verify that it is installed". That might help, I'll try that in a couple of hours, if I can. If not, I'll try it at 21:00 (GMT+2:00 time) today and post back an update on the status.Didn't work. But I have news about the kernel extension thing. I installed it and latest Firefox for XP worked. But I have a question: as ESET Smart Security 8 has an .msi file for the installer, how do I get past an error on that? I mean, the installer opens, goes past the system verification, of course, after tricking msiexec.exe that I am running XP, but after I click Next, it throws an error. I don't have error the code now, but I'll have it at 21:00 (GMT+2:00 time). Also, I tried to get Windows Installer 4.5 for Windows XP (.exe file), but it refuses to install it. Since the .exe contains all the Windows Installer files, I tried to replace them myself, but one file SIMPLY refuses to get copied in system32, that being msi.dll, reason why the Windows Installer service won't start and the .msi files wil spit the "Safe mode" error.

The question is: how do I get that .msi file installed?Antonio, don't diss teh Patioz.Really sorry for what I had to post here:

Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 26, 2017, 09:50:21 AM
Antonio, don't diss teh Patioz.

Erstens: Mein name is Antoniu und nicht Antonio. Why I'm saying this? Because BC_Programmer used to respond to my thread almost instantly, but after I said what I said, BC won't say anything, even if 2 hours have passed. Maybe he simply is busy, I'll wait before I pull the plug. On what, you may ask? You'll see, is your answer. I really didn't intend to get arrogant, at all actually. I was actually asleep until about 10 minutes before the post I'm quoting. Either way, I'm not particularly motivated to reply. Some spots of text are gibberish, presumably via translation, and I suspect this might be the case both ways, as some seemingly clear english text seems to get interpreted poorly. The reason I was pressing so hard on the SP4 point is because I got very similar errors when I attempted to install .NET 2.0 SP1 onto a W2K install with no Service Packs in a VM, and the shorter replies leaned towards (to me) the domain of "tell them what they want to get more suggestions!" They are interesting but they certainly make any sort of diagnostics or even troubleshooting by trying to reproduce the issue difficult, and now we're getting into questions about specific dll files, replacing system-level DLL files arbitrarily, etc.

Since I had no issues installing .NET 2.0 SP1 on a relatively clean Windows 2000 install, aside from Microsoft's own KB article I don't see what else I'd have to add.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 26, 2017, 11:54:48 AM
There is no secret meeting place where members receive instructions and are told not to post on certain other members threads. Anyway, the Windows 2000 installation fall into some wierd error where any Windows program (especially explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe) would "report errors and crash", reason why I had to do a whole reinstall of the thing. So, I reinstalled it and .NET Framework 2 SP1 finally got installed. But now, guess what? Outlook Express security update won't install! Lucky I don't use that thing anyway… Also, Windows Installer still has "problems", even if the service now responds to my commands. Why? Don't ask, because this time I really didn't do anything to it. But I'm ignoring installing ESET on Windows 2000 anyway at this point, I somehow managed to get IOBit Malware Fighter latest version on that PC, ran a scan and put it to shut down the PC after removal. And guess what happened? "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message! Never saw that in my life, to be honest! Anyway, do you think that this "IOBit Malware Fighter" thing will be enough for a PC that is used once a month? I'm planning to install Windows 2000 on my old Toshiba Sattelite A200, as that thing can't handle XP how I would like it to.IOBit is a rather shady Chinese company. Their malware fighter in particular stole things from MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and is otherwise not particularly good IMO.

On "old" systems I don't install security updates (Beyond what might be rolled into Service Packs of course) and don't install AV software either (which I don't use anyway). Personally I find AV software to often be as invasive and problematic as being infected to begin with, the only difference is intent.

You think it would be fine to let it without any antivirus/antispyware? Or what do you mean?

| |

It's unlikely anything was compromised, the INTENT is to get people to call the number, whereupon they "fix" your problem by using arbitrary command prompt commands and looking in services and event viewer and showing you a number of error events and claiming it was malware, then getting you to pay to fix it.Now would be a good time to make a plan to manage your passwords and other critical private data.
Spend some time changing passwords of every account you have that might be important. Answer»

Any suggestions on how to fix this? I don't get a BSOD on bootup at all.Could we ask for a little more information please?

Are you trying to install Windows 2000 onto a machine from a USB STICK? It's slightly ambiguous at the minute.
Either way, some information on the machine in question would also be quite useful.
If you could post back with further information, I'm sure someone will be able to assist. It is to one USB stick partition, from a separate partition on the same drive. Could you help me install it to a drive?

You have Windows 2000 installation media on a partition of a USB drive? If so, how did you manage that?

I used the program "WinSetupFromUSB" to copy to the install partition. But how would I stop the Windows 2000 partition from halting when it detects devices at the GUI stage?Perhaps I didn't ask clearly enough.

1. Did you copy from a pressed Windows 2000 install disk?

2. You do know that you can only install a Windows OS to a fixed internal disk?

Is there any reason you can't use the physical CD-ROM - This is a lot EASIER than trying to use a USB drive, especially something old like Windows 2000.I know but I mainly wanted to install to the USB, not from it.You can't...i mentioned that earlier in Chat. It's because my HDD is broken. You will have to get a new hard drive. Hard drives are cheap. I bought a 120GB IDE Seagate off of newegg as a refurb for $9.99 with free shipping and 1 year warranty for my daughters Pentium 4 HT system. It had 18k hours of use, but was still healthy with no bad sectors etc as tested with Crystal Disk. Ebay is another cheap alternative to a Hard Drive, but be sure it had a warranty to not be DOA.

Microsoft does not allow OS to install to thumb drives to protect from Piracy. If you need an OS that runs off of a USB thumb drive you will have to go with a Linux Distro, with many to chose from, however the computer will not be very fast at tasks as for it has to load over USB the programs to memory. Wanting to run Windows 2000 means that the hardware might be USB 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0. I have tested on USB 2.0 Linux and it works but it is by no means fast even on a quadcore computer everything lags when having to load from the USB stick. Older computers I have that are USB 1.0 or 1.1 dont support booting over USB, but if they did it would be way more painful in lag between slower USB communications as well as the fact that the CPUs are only Pentium III's on these systems. I have Fedora 17 on a thumb drive that works well and supports wifi etc.We haven't found out if he got Windows 2000 LEGALLY...
And we may never know...

Since WinNT was released is when MS decided to cripple Windows from running from external devices...obviously for a reason...
However some Users ASKING for advice will ignore said advice and attempt to go their own way because they don't like the answers...
Yes..it can be done...No we don't ADVISE that here....i don't think we'll see him anytime soon.....Just saying, not to reuse an old thread...

I met one of my friends, 2Very_Icey on Minecraft, as a direct result of finding & buying a new hard drive.
Even though I never use that computer anymore, I guess the HDD is a reminder of why a bad thing can turn into a very good thing!

Thank you all for the help!
I will mark this old topic as solved!

P.S: I bought the HDD around January 2014.

| |

Solve : windows 2000 and directx? |
Answer»

Greetings!

So i put together a machine to run classic ish games on it. ETC DOOM series, GTA2, TITANIC Adventure out of time, Re-Volt but im sure somethings wrong. I dual booted windows 98SE and windows 2000 and when i try to play GTA2 i get "no suitable graphics card found" yet im using a Nvidia mx440 64mb which is more then enough to run that game.

So im thinking i need directx? if so what version is for windows 2k and what version is for windows 98?Sorry this didnt get answered until like 2 weeks later. I was looking in categories and this one caught my attention. Normally I just look in New and Updated post links vs categories. But when all is resolved there I will go out looking for orphan threads that need attention.

I ran into similar issues with GTA2 and VC many years AGO with PCI nVidia GEFORCE Cards in 2003. I had to update my DirectX as well as go with the stable vs beta driver for the GeForce card. I had the GeForce 4 MX 440 PCI with 64MB RAM which met the recommended requirements for the game, although its performance wasnt all that great running through PCI BUS. This was one reason for me to get rid of my Pentium 4 2Ghz HP Pavilion running Windows XP Home with this PCI GeForce Card and get a newer system with an AGP slot to handle better graphics processing since the HP tower was lacking a AGP slot. I JUMPED into the GeForce FX5200 128MB AGP on a new back then 2004 Compaq Presario S6030NX running a 2.08Ghz Athlon XP 2800+ with 256MB RAM on 80GB HDD with XP Home and its performance was so much better than the prior system with a PCI Video card. If the Geforce 4 MX 440 was an AGP I think it would have done far better than the PCI card as for I have gotten an older system given to me with an AGP slot type for the GeForce 4 MX 440 64MB and its surprisingly responsive with older games, far better than I remember with that PCI video card of the same GPU and VRAM.

According to this site it looks like it needs DirectX 6.1 or newer. What does dxdiag show for version?

http://www.thegtaplace.com/topdown/gta2/system-requirements/DirectX 9 should run on it properly...I thought the 4 series was DirectX 8 maximum... but your right Patio it does support 9. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_4_series

| |

I put the HD in a USB adapter and formatted it.
Yeah, I know. I tell other people never do that to a recovery partition.
But don't do as I do.

Now what do I do?
OK.
Found the manual.
Now I have to read it.
I will be BACK in a day or two.
For Windows 2000 you have 3 Microsoft designed options of install:

- Install from recovery partition
- Boot from the Windows 2000 CD
- Boot and install the initial OS off of the 4 floppy disks which then allowed for you to gain access to the CD ROM in which it would mount generic driver that worked with most CD-ROMs at the time.

Other ways I have seen OS's installed:

- Remove Hard Drive and place into another system of very similar hardware specs and build the system off of that and then move the drive to the laptop. If the CPU's are very similar it may work although if drastically different you end up with BSOD in a boot loop with dump messages. * This is kind of bending the EULA rules as for the minute a system is built the drive is suppose to stay with that system. We are assuming that no one would pirate the OS to use 2 copies of the same license on 2 different computers.

- Copy contents of the Windows 2000 CD to a folder on the C: drive using another computer and the drive to be for the laptop connected as an external. First you need to format the laptop drive to be bootable, and then you can attempt to install to itself from say C:\Win2000\setup.exe to C:\windows\

- Use Laplink cable with Laplink or FileVan software to transfer the contents of the Windows 2000 CD to a folder on the C: drive from another computer with a FUNCTIONAL CD or DVD ROM over LPT1 parallel or serial port at a slow speed file transfer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LapLink_cable * Back in college we had to do this with an old Compaq to install Windows 98 to it when the CD ROM was bad. I used FileVan trial to achieve this by zipping the contents of the Windows 98 install into a single ZIP file and transfer that since the FileVan trial limited you to transferring like 10 files max per transfer session until you pay to unlock it. So I would then UNZIP the contents of Windows 98 and run the setup.exe and install 98 to the system from its own hard drive. It took about 10 hours to transfer the entirety of Windows 98 from CD on one system through Parallel Port to the laptop in master/slave communication mode. We set it to run at the end of the college class and came back the next day with it completed. Serial Null Cable would have transferred way faster, but we didn't have that available at the time 15 years ago.

- Drive duplicator to copy it from one same model computers hard drive to the other, and then correct the key manually so that its running off of the correct key as seen on license key label on laptop.

| |

I was almost going to install Linux on this system, but decided not to only because I dont want her to get confused, since she already knows her way around Windows, and 192MB Ram might be too tight for Ubuntu which runs best at 512MB Ram or more on my other systems.Hmm I remove IE so avoiding the need for antivirus ... a neater way is to make an install disk using this http://www.vorck.com/windows/index.html.

As for linux something like Nimblex 2008 or Puppy linux would be more suited to that hardware and if she is used to firefox the difference should be within her grasp...our kids have used linux from the ageof 4.

regards

MikeIgnore the above post. You can use Avira, Avast, or AVG. Those are the top 3 free av's.you can also try Panda Cloud AV.

It supports windows 2000 and it's also free too.ClamWin is pretty good too. But I'd try AVG Free first. ClamWin does not have an ondemand scanner, but it is allowed to be used for both commercial and non-commercial purposesQuote

Ignore the above post.
why? It is a mistake all to common for people to not consider this when purchasing a computer.

Windows 2000 is now at least 10 years old and is no longer supported by Microsoft. You cannot get the latest security updates. Solve : Max registry and paging file size for computer w/ 21 GB free space & 261040KB?? |
Answer»

I want to fix my family member's computer. It is too slow. It freezes too. From the sounds of it, the system is running a lot of software in the background, so it might be worth a look to eliminate background applications that you do not need.

Agreed - leave it at System Managed. And there is no setting for the registry size - it is what it is.

If you are having specific problems with your computer please start a new thread describing the problems in detail and we'll try to help.

I deleted your duplicate thread - no need to post the same question more than once.

| |

Solve : Win 2000 missing .dll file? |
Answer»

hello to all. i am posting for a friend of mine so i might not have access to everything at the time

anyway, i have a computer that will not boot due to a missing hal.dll file in the C:/windows/system32 folder.
my basic guess is to temporarily boot the OS off of a boot-disk and while on this second OS, replace hal.dll from another computer running 2000

only problem is how to make the boot disk.
i do not have the setup DISKS for the OS.

This is an Acer Aspire one net-book, running a intel atom processor.

if anyone can give me options on how to replace the file let me know.
if you need more information, just ask.

PRETTY sure it was running service pack 3. could have been two though.

anyhow, please help and ill thank you much
THX in advanceOk. update. Thank you.I know this is a dead thread, or moribund, but I wouldn't want anybody Googling in here and downloading that guy's DLL file. The thing is, the file NAMED HAL.DLL is a custom file built at install time, tailored to the hardware the installer finds. (HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer.) Somebody else's file will most likely be just as bad as none at all, and also downloading any system files from an unknown source is a very bad idea. In fact, having followed that link, the site looks distinctly odd, and I suggest that it should be removed. To regenerate a Windows 2000 hal.dll you need a good install set of disks or a Win 2K CD-ROM.

| |
