Solve : Swapping HDD between SATA II and SATA?

Answer»

I just want to make sure this will work before I go and spend $150 on a new HDD.

I have an Alienware M11x, with a 160GB SATA II HDD. I'd like to upgrade to one of the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid HDDs. In the tech specs for the Seagate it says it has a SATA 3 Gb/s interface. I've never switched out a laptop HDD before, having only ever worked with PATA HDDs on desktops, so this is kind of new for me.

Is a SATA II connection compatible with a SATA 3 Gb/s interface? If it is not they are backwards compatible and it will revert back to SATA II...
CHECK your Owners Manual for specs. That's fine with me. I'm not WORRIED about it working to it's utmost, just it working at allJust to ADD to the above - SATA II and SATA 3Gb/sec are the same thing.  The original SATA interface had a max transfer rate of 150MB/sec (1.5Gb/sec), SATA II doubled this to 300MB/sec (3Gb/sec) and SATA III doubled this again to 600MB/sec (6Gb/sec).  All SATA interfaces are forwards and backwards compatible so there should be no problems.  Enjoy your new drive, I've heard those hybrid drives are PRETTY good.
P.S. WELCOME to the forums!

Solve : MAC-Transferring HDD's from one MAC to another Mac?

Answer»

I have aPower Mac 7200 with Os8 operating System.I am getting READY to retire it . It has a 40 meg HDD in it that has some Programs (Microsoft Word) and a lot of files on it that I would Like to install on its replacement which is a MAC G-4 with a OS 10.6. Is there a reasonble way to simply remove the 40 Meg HDD and installit in the G-4  with all data and programs intact, thus giving me 2 HDDs in the G-4? Any Info on this subject would be appreciated. Thank YouFrom what very little I know about Apple hardware, I would say it is not possible to just plug it into the G4 motherboard (the older Power Mac 7200 USES the SCSI hdd interface).

It may be possible to use an external enclosure, but I don't think the software on your old HARD DRIVE will run on the new computer.
This would depend upon the way Mac OS was written, and I know even less about Mac OS than I know about the hardware they use.

Solve : Socket A Cooler for Socket 370??

Answer»

So, I'm in kind of a crappy situation here.
I have an elderly computer, that I use as a server (a Windows 2000 Server domain controller! Woo!) with a 1.2GHz Tualatin Celeron, and I was reapplying thermal goop because i noticed it was running really hot.
Went to clip the cooler back on, and oops, one of the clips (which was ALREADY somewhat broken) decided to break completely.
I'm pretty much relying on gravity right now, and it's running alright (a bit hot, but a good 10 degrees below what Intel states is the max temp the thing can handle, and it only gets a few degrees hotter under load).
I was looking around online, and I can't seem to find a cooler that's labeled for SOCKET 370 that has the three-clip design (since only one of the clips is broken).
I found this, but it's for Socket A, and since I have no experience with AMD processors (the athlon 64 i have in my main box is the first AMD processor i've owned since I had a K6-200, heh), I was wondering if someone could take a look at it and let me know.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835114011

Thank ye much!
Thanks in advance!Socket A and 370 coolers are usually pretty interchangeable.  AMD chips could take less mounting pressure so 370 coolers could occasionally cause DAMAGE, but as far as I know not the other way around.  I've run 370 and A coolers on each socket with no issues, even just changed the mounting bracket between them.  Ive snapped many a flimsy bracket myself, the metal ones tend to be more resilient.Well, it's the actual clip on the CPU socket that's broken.
I might just epoxy it down since I know I'll never use the processor for anything else again, and it's a junker machine that i threw together with an old trigem board from an emachine.
Thanks though! In the event I do buy a new cooler that's the one i'll buy, then.Ah, I misunderstood.  I've broken a few of those too heh.
Should still work just fine, thermal epoxy WOULD do the trick though if need be.

Solve : urgent data recovery from computer that shuts down immediately after startup?

Answer»

I need the major steps for the quickest and easiest way to recover urgent data from a computer that shuts down immediately after startup.  THANK youMaybe you need to be more specific.
1. Why your computer shutsdown(suddenly, previously, recently)?
2. Laptop or desktop?
3. Are you doing anything that made your data loss before computer shutsdown?
4. What kind of data are you trying to recover?
5. Are loss data connected to computer shutdown?
6. Are there previous events, messages occured to computer shutdown such as thermal or overheat?Slave the drive to a different system.I AGREE with Allen, set up the hard drive as a slave on another system and you should be able to get any of the contents off that you need to. QUOTE from: beanhead07 on July 26, 2010, 01:39:00 PM

I agree with Allen, set up the hard drive as a slave on another system and you should be able to get any of the contents off that you need to.
Gee, thanks. That's if its a desktop drive. depending on the type of SHUT down, if it is software related you may be able to boot a live-cd linux distro and recover small files that way.

if you do not have another computer to hook it up to to pull data off, or if you do not have any friends that can help. You may have to hit up a local computer store or GREED squad. It shouldn't cost much (assuming you provide a bare drive and an external to transfer contents to)

Solve : Computer Rejects all Network Cards?

Answer»

Note: Sorry if i posted this in the wrong section, please notify me / move the thread if you do. Cheers.

Alright, so here is what happened.
About 6 months ago i started having problems with my network card (We can call it Card A). It disappeared, then when i unplugged the power cord and plugged it back in - it would reappear. About 3 months ago, it vanished again - and wouldn't appear no matter what i did. So, i did the logical thing and bought a new network card. It worked for roughly 2 months and the same thing happened. They were both LAN, so i tried using my wireless network card.

The same thing happened last week. I updated the drivers when it was visible, if i try to update it again now - it sais there isn't a network device at all. So I'm assuming it could be a motherboard issue, but I'm not so great with computers - so i wanted some advice first, on what could be the problem.

Below is the information i got when i ran DXDIAG :

Any information that could help

Network cards are cheap. MOTHERBOARDS are not.
Buy some more stonework cards, from a new source.,

Also, try to boot t the system with a 'live' CD that can find network cards.
They are a number if Linux distros that do this.
If Linux  can not find the new card...
if would point to  the motherboard.
It appears to me to be more a Windows issue than a mobo problem. I've never had a nic fail (without being physically damaged) and the fact that you have had 2 'disappear' in the space of a few months tells me it is likely a Windows problem. Is there any problem devices showing in Device Manager? i.e devices with an asterisk sign next to them. I noticed in the report you included there is network device identified, but there is no driver installed for it. Can you tell us the model of your motherboard, and the model of your network card that isn't working, as this may help us narrow things down. Are you using the same PCI slot with each card? Maybe try a different sot. Also NIC's are notorious for being the first thing damaged by a power surge. Make sure you have surge protection. Since you said the wireless card did it too I would consider the possibility of malware. Try using Comodo and see if it finds anything. If that doesn't help I would suggest a fresh install of Windows, especialy if you did an upgrade from Vista.

Good luck! Geek-9pm
The last network card i tried didn't work at all. And it was brand new, so i figured buying more would be pointless.

thelaymanscomputer
I've reinstalled W7 Several times, and still doesn't work.
The model im using is ASUS p5kpl/1600.
And a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 2.80Ghz Processor

Joe3fl

I've tried using different PCI Slots, but still no cigar. I've downloaded Comodo and it didn't come up with any viruses / malware - So that isn't the problem. As i said to thelaymans, i've done a tonne of fresh W7 installs.

Thanks for all your responses, i HOPE i can get the problem fixed soon.It is not clear how you determined that it was not any kind of hardware problem.
I do not know of any free or cheap software that can really find hardware failures on a motherboard.
If you have found a way to do hardware  diagnostics with OS constrained software, please let us know what it is.

The common experience of many is to use a method independent from the OS to identify hardware. This is often a utility that has to boot up the machine without the installed OS and probe the target hardware directly. The makers of some network cards provide such materials, but the are often specific to their brand of card. Is this what you did? And you found the hardware was working alright and therefor the problems has to be the OS?

Solve : intel d845grg mb dead ??

Answer»

one the week end i took my old pc apart to  spray the the case i took the front pannel off carefully and i life the rest ot the case at the other end of my garage, i removed the power / reset switch and the leds from the front of the case, sprayed it black, after i waited for the front to DRY i reassembled it, and  connected the switches.

the mother board led comes on but when i power it up i get nothing, im just stumped, the light on the mb eliminates the psu, (the wires are connected crrectly) it worked fine untill i took the front of the case off, im thinking the MB has died due to the age of the MB any ideas to find out what the problem is I hate to ask the obvious, but did you reconnect the switch correctly?

You might possibly be able to test that by pulling the CMOS battery out and letting it sit without AC power for a few minutes, then plug it in. All of the intel boards i've had power on after AC failure when the cmos gets reset.yeahh the switches are  in correctly  i followed the manual when i put it back together, would restting the cmos work though ? Clean your cables properly or try it with a new PSU.I would bet my left man-orb you EITHER have the switch plugged in wrong, or you DAMAGED the switch when removing it. Do you have an old case you can TAKE a power switch from? If so, just plug the switch directly to the mobo and try powering it up.

Solve : Trouble installing GeForce8400 GS video card?

Answer»

When I bought my current computer, it was loaded with Vista and had an onboard vga. I installed a GeForce7600 rather quickly, and had no issues with installation.

8 or 9 months ago I upgraded to 7 Ultimate, and still had no issues with the 7600 CARD. But, in the last month or so, I've had many crashdumps and general display issues related to the card, and I figured it was time to replace it.

So I went out and bought a GeForce8400 on the cheap (college student budget, ya know). The instructions that came with it specified that I should uninstall the drivers for and disable the onboard vga - well, I couldn't, because the onboard has never shown in the device manager since the day I upgraded to 7. So, I followed the rest of the instructions.. and.. the first time I try to boot up the PC, there's at least 10 seconds of listening to something inside the tower make a sound kind of like a mix between a "CLICK" and a "pop"... it's like.. "click/pop".. "whiirrrr".. "click/pop"..."whiirrrrr"... etc, for 10-15 seconds, and then it boots as normal. EXCEPT, the new card is completely ignored and the only way I can get a display is to plug into the onboard.

I've installed the drivers that came on the CD that was included with the card. I've tried updating them as well. But the card doesn't even show in the device manager. I've changed the BIOS to PCI-E, and PCI, but neither one worked. I've checked the fan on the board to make sure there was nothing blocking the blades but it looks completely clean and clear to me.

I'm at a loss for what to try next - I'm not much good in the hardware department. D:

Oh.. basic PC info:
Compaq Presario PC (SR5510F)
AMD X2 5000
Windows 7 Ultimate 32x
2GB RAM
Onboard is an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SESounds to me like the hard drive is getting ready to fail....i never heard a vid card do a clik/pop.......whirrr...
Remove the new card so at least the machine functions fairly well...follow this Slave Drive TUTORIAL  to get your important data...use the machine as little as possible and shop for a new HDD.I've already removed the card, mainly because if I can't figure it out soon, it'll have to be RETURNED. The click/pop/whirr doesn't happen anymore once the vidcard is out of the picture, but, now I'm stuck running on only one monitor with so-so display due to the blah onboard vga. D:

Without the vidcard in, I can listen to the HDD and it's almost inaudible.. I have had no issues with it at all. I'm kind of hard on my PC's so I'm (UNFORTUNATELY) familiar with the sound of a dying HDD, and this one definitely does not fall into that category. The click/whirr thing had to be related to the vidcard, since it started on install and stopped on uninstall.

Is it possible I don't have enough power to run this card? I really am clueless as to how I can check to see how much power my PCI slot has access to... and this card requires 300W.OK.
I sit corrected on the drive issue because basically i'm not there to see/hear what's going on...but as stated i've never experienced that from a vid card...
That being said return the card for a replacement...meantime find out what make and Wattage the PSU is and we'll go from there...
Did the vid card have a 4/6 prong plug on it that may not have been connected ? ?Well, if I had a way to do it, I'd record the sound and share it with you, lol.

Is there an easy way to find out the wattage? Or even a less easy way? I really just don't know where to look. I'll probably go and exchange the card in the morning and see if the replacement has anymore luck.

I didn't see any prongs at all.. I don't think it has to be connected to any additional power source. I doubt it is a power issue as the 8400GS only uses a minuscule amount. It also does not require auxiliary power.

There was an incompatibility with some models in the 8*** series (which used PCIe 2.0) when used with older PCIe 1.0a, but I can't tell if this applies in your case.

It seriously sounds as though it is simply a dead card. Go ahead and replace the card.

Solve : MacGuyvering a Bluetooth Printer?

Answer»

So my printer doesn't have Bluetooth capability built in.

I tried doing some Google searching, but I think my limited vocabulary is making it difficult to find what I want, so I'll throw it to you guys (apparently, WORDS LIKE "thing", and "hoozit" aren't helpful).

I'd like to ADD Bluetooth capability to my printer.

So I was thinking - if I got a micro-USB (male) to USB (female) cable (if such a thing exists), and plugged in a Bluetooth dongle, and plugged THAT contraption into the printer, WOULD it do anything? I'm guessing not, because I'd have no way of addressing it.

So is there a hoozit available that allows this? I was looking at "Bluetooth print servers", and I *think* that's what I want.

The end result is, I have three guys with laptops working in a trailer. We can walk over to the printer and PLUG into the USB cable and print, but one of 'em is a fat *censored*, and I always forget to unplug the network cable before I move with my laptop, so a wireless option would be cool.

Preferably under $40.Wireless Print Server:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320023&cm_re=wireless_print_server-_-33-320-023-_-ProductMust be Bluetooth. We don't have access to the local WAN. Quote from: rjbinney on July 27, 2010, 01:42:04 PM

Solve : pc will not power on unless...?

Answer»

I'm not too new to computers, I've built PC's for years. But this is something I've not encountered, and I cannot source the problem. I'm thinking either the new PSU is faulty or the motherboard is bad. (or it's as simple as a bios setting)

I just recently bought a new tower and radiator to upgrade from some junk tower and a thermaltake radiator that came with a kit. just about everything else is the same, I just moved from one tower to the other. Now, when I went to power it up I got nothing. realizing I had added a few more fans because of the tower switch it was probably just a little too much for my 550w PSU. so I upgraded that to a silverstone 850w. Yay works!...but...

This is the weirdest symptom I've seen. once I shut it down, I have to unplug it for a few MINUTES and plug it back in for it to turn on. otherwise I get a flash of juice once, than nothing...

is it a bad batch of the PSU?

It is near time to replace the hardware, but I was hoping to wait until fall.

tower I'm using:
LIAN LI Lancool PC-K62 Black 0.8 mm SECC, Plastic + Mesh ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

and the PSU
SILVERSTONE ST85F-P 850W ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

here is my out of date hardware:
ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80571E5200 (with a weak overclock to 3.0 never breaking 45c)
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ

the video card is even older, but I know that's not the problem.

ALSO this is water cooled if that makes any difference on what I could have toasted or over stressed. It's a bigwater 735 kit with a video waterblock and a new 2x140mm radiator.

I am grateful for any tips/suggestions/ideas...anything. I'm at a loss as to what this is as it works...it's just odd. I'd be happy to provide any details I could be missing to my setup, just let me know.

anyone? I dont want to rma the power supply if thats not it...? thanksIssues like this are usually the board or power supply as you guessed.
Try a BIOS update if you can, often an updated BIOS can fix these issues.
If that doesn't help, you're back to square one, but really the best thing to do is try to borrow another PSU to test with, or try your PSU on another system.
What was your old PSU, out of interest? As Calum said, it is likely a PSU issue, however it could also be a problem with the CMOS not storing your setting correctly, perhaps due to a dead battery. It is common (particularly with overclocked systems) for a computer to refuse to BOOT if there are problems with BIOS settings. By unpugging the power for a few minutes the CMOS will lose the stored information and revert to default BIOS settings at the next boot. If you are overclocking, try leaving everything at default in the BIOS. If this fixes things, it is likely a dud CMOS battery. Quote

By unpugging the power for a few minutes the CMOS will lose the stored information and revert to default BIOS settings at the next boot

But only if the CMOS battery is removed...it is an overclocked system, so I'll try your suggestions. I didn't even think to go to defaults as it ran the same mild OC for like 3 years. lol

Thanks!

The old psu was just not enough power. with half the system plugged in it worked, but with everything, I got nothing.

Solve : Acer Aspire L5100 Desktop PC?

Does anyone have an Acer Aspire L5100 Desktop PC?

The unit has a small form factor.

I need to know the NAME of the onboard Network Adapter. (Ethernet controller)

This should be listed under DEVICE Manager.

Thanks in advance and here's HOPING!!!We' seem to have already answered this...

Clik Here...No - I still need to know the name of the network card in an Acer Aspire Desktop L5100.

This may HELP me locate the correct driver.

So far, no luck. The driver is listed in a link in your other post...I have used the link and downloaded all available drivers.

None of the available drivers are correct for the ethernet adapter.

I just want to ask anyone who ALREADY HAS  an Acer Aspire L5100 Desktop, to please look for the make and model number of the integrated NIC.

You are using the wrong driver; you wouldn't be asking for the make and model of the integrated NIC because it's listed on the Acer website for you to plainly see.
It's a Realtek NIC.

Have an HP Pavilion laptop. I replaced the Hard Drive recently, but when I turned on the computer, it says just a second into the booting process

What does this MEAN and how do I get the laptop to start up properly Repairing another computer that you don't KNOW how to repair What funny GUYS.  Seems I shall have to make a new login.

No I know how to repair it.  Repairing a computer doesnt require the knowledge of things like what the beep codes are or what they mean or what the stop mesages mean or whatever.  Its just like in Math, theres more than one way to get to the result.  I just want to find out if you guys know what the message means and if so is there another way you guys know to fix it.  Thats all.

By the way, why does it annoy you guys so much that I as a computer technician like to use this forum to ask questions?  I  mean you guys can open computer shops too right? PXE: Error Media test failure

this stuff means that your NIC is set to boot from the network.

With no network server setup to do the boot it fails and moves on to look for a hard drive to boot from.

By the way, why does it annoy you guys so much that I as a computer technician like to use this forum to ask questions?

First, I'm not "you guys". I speak for myself, not others. Second, OF COURSE it bothers me when someone claims a level of expertise at something, gets paid for that alleged expertise, and then asks others to do the job for him for free. Call me petty, but that irks me.

Oh - and I assure you - when clients pay me to do a job it's because they KNOW I'm good at what I do based on past performance and my reputation. I do not ask others to do my job for me. I do it myself, and I do it very well.

And I'm not trying to start a fight here. You asked, so I responded.

(grammar edit)Allan,

IM not referring to just you as you all, Im referring to all of you who claim to be helpful but then get pissed off when someone wants to learn from your experiences.

By the way, every single issue Ive ever brought here has been fixed by me, myself and I.  In some cases I learnt something new from here, in some other cases I didnt.  But as I said in another message to someone else who claimed to be ticked off by my asking for help, if I were to wait the possible day and a half for you guys to reply and give me a solution to any issue, I wouldnt be able to turn out the number of computers I do.

So, anyways, this is a board to offer people advise and I have helped some others too, and I see nothing wrong in helping others and leaving it to them for personal gain, that is, unless youre not helping them willingly.  Posting on the internet for the whole world to see is definitely not the way to keep your advice secret.  Why take an issue with things, if you are helping out, then do so willingly.  Theres nothing that says you cant do what I do, is there?

See, that's the problem right there. But let's just let it be, shall we? There's nothing to be gained by continuing to argue the point. I have no doubt there are plenty of folks here who will be more than happy to help you. No Im not trying to argue either, just trying to CLEAR my name.  But I do understand that you dont want to help me.  But thats okay, just be upfront from the get go.

Best to go to a retailer in this situation rather than online...I just wanted to quickly add that very, very occasionally I connect at my old, original SPEED but the CONNECTION isn't any faster than when I connect at the 31Kbps. Browsing, downloading, ect. is still extremely slow.Clik Here for a speed test

Also visit their main page to see if DSL is available in your area...normally not much higher than dial-up access...I "tried" the speed test. The organizers were so embarrassed they sent a guy to my house to slap my face. In all seriousness, the speedometer only looked to be registering around 700K, if I was reading it right, which I'm not sure I was. What type of connection do you use?Hey, greywolf. Thanks for responding. I'm using a dial-up, 56K connection.

It seems no matter what speed my modem says it connects at my download speed never gets above 1.5 Kbps/Did you visit the Homepage above to check for DSL in your area ? ?I haven't checked that yet Patio. I'm pretty sure DSL is available where I live, the only thing stopping me from getting is that after I spent just about every penny I had on college I had to move back in with my parents and haven't been able to find a good, full-time job. Thus my parents are the ones paying the Internet bill. I already feel enough of a freeloader as it is, I would hate to ask for more.it shouldn't be much more than you are CURRENTLY paying...that was my point.

Solve : URGENT : Boot Failure .?

Answer»

Hey guys. I got a problem with this old PC of mine. I can't determine it's model or anything, not even talking about motherboard type. I recently got this PC back, was at my countryside for ages, so it was giving me the BIOS beeps that my VGA card is broken or missing. So I took that out, cleaned it from DUST and put it back in. Lost that problem. Then I started GETTING boot failure errors. One error lead to another one. At the boot SCREEN I was told that "Boot Failure, please insert a proper boot device blehlbehbleh and press any key". What the *censored* am I supposed to do? I've tried everything.

PS : When I inserted Win XP installation CD, it took me to the blue screen ( win installation screen ) so I deleted the formation C: and it started formatting aso. Everything ran smooth until it got done with formatting.. Apart from starting to install the operation system, it took me back to the formatting screen, like it didn't complete it before.

This is really urgent thing, I know that there are other people with their problems too, but if I wont get this PC done ASAP I have to give one of my notebooks away - and no, I don't want to do that . >_If you have a spare drive kicking around that is known to be good, I would swap the drives out and try to install and see if that helps.

To begin with issues such as video card at the get go, isnt good. It is not a common problem! You may have a bummed drive or another hardware issue.

ALSO has this system also ever run Windows XP before, that is, is this system new enough of hardware and meets the minimum system REQUIREMENTS of Pentium II 233Mhz and 128MB Ram, and 5GB Minimum Hard Drive.

Solve : Check BIOS settings, from within XP??

Answer»

Pure curiosity ........ any way to access the settings from within the XP OS?  Any clever small app that can do this?  Not for making changes - just read only.

Main reason is laziness PLUS finding an easy way to record the settings without always having to reboot and stop at beginning.Nope. Quote from: ChrisXPPro on November 16, 2009, 07:26:53 PM

Main reason is laziness plus finding an easy way to record the settings without always having to reboot and stop at beginning.
Why are you always rebooting and entering the bios? Barring a specific problem or need to make a one time adjustment you should never be in the bios in the first place.Allan, thx for reply.

I am not ''always rebooting'' - in fact I do not choose to enter BIOS unless really necessary.  I do though have to REPLACE my 2032 battery and so am wanting to check and note my current BIOS settings for the record - but it WOULD be handy if that could be accessed without doing it thru a reboot.

I was pretty sure there was no convenient way to access other than direct but thought I'd ask. Thanks.I see. Your first post says: "... without always having to reboot and stop at beginning.", so I thought this was a frequent process. My bad!  Probably didn't make myself very clear!  Thanks again.I've never tried it, but here's one.
CMOSsave/CMOSrest 3.8Thx for the info - seems an OLD file for early Win - and ALSO a download attempt failed.

Appreciate the feedback.when you replace a CMOS battery the BIOS  reverts to default settings...
this should be good enough for the machine to run and let you need o make any neccessary changes...I think he knows that and just wants to know what the current settings are to make it easier to get back to these settings after changing the battery. I think.Take a pic of each screen.  That's about the only way I know.I memorise them myself..."z"

Solve : keyboard problem with Acer Aspire One netbook?

Answer»

My friend has an Acer Aspire One NETBOOK which he got recently. Today he said the keyboard started messing up and some keys type different stuff than they're SUPPOSED to. For example if he pressed "K" it types a "2" instead. I'm not sure how to fix it but he think he must have pressed some combination of keys that switched on an alternate keyboard pattern. Does anyone know how fix it? Thanks!

(He says the P key, comma key, question mark and colon key and maybe one other are not TYPING those characters but are typing different ones instead)  Learn about NumLK.

And TURN it off to fix this "problem".

I dont know why, I just STARTED my computer and it wasnt working. Help Maybe you could provide a little more information. I, for one, have no idea what you are talking about.see his other posts...
GotchaMost mouses have a wheel in the center that can spin. It can also serve as a button. When I spin it it scrolls down/up my page (that function works), but when I click it nothing happens (I think its broken, but I can hear the click). I have no idea why its not working. This is my mouse (CLICK).How were we supposed to know you were asking about your mouse?

Did you install a driver for your mouse? If so, check the settings in the Mouse Driver Software. Quote from: Allan on November 18, 2009, 06:31:40 AM

The mouse was running fine until yesterday. I didn't delete anything from my computer, the mouse can move and is working (except for the scroll button, that was working yesterday in the morning). Before 1 min the button started to work again (I usually PRESS it 30 times maybe when I am in a browser trying to close/open a tab with it by reflex, and I sow that it has started to work again). So.. I think the PROBLEM is in my mouse, and not in my computer. I GUESS its fixed for now.

Solve : Hard Drive detected in bios and device manager not working?

Answer»

I have a PC with 3 sata HDS. The main Maxtor drive (11 months old) stopped working, message 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media'.
The Maxtor HD is detected in BIOS and Device manager but not in My computer or computer managment, I have CHECKED and SWAPPED  the HD connections .Powermax and Seatools cant detect HD. I have disconnected  the 2 other HDs but win xp disc cant find a drive to load windows onto. What else can I check. If I understand correctly the problem is with the Maxtor drive only? If so, it's dead. If not, please clarify.Yes the problem is only with the Maxtor HD. Is there anyway of retrieving data from the drive. Quote from: stevo1973 on NOVEMBER 16, 2009, 02:03:16 PM

...The Maxtor HD is detected in BIOS and Device manager but not in My computer or computer managment...
I assume it's not able to boot and you are booting from one of the other 2 drives?Yes I'm booting from one of the other drives.Try a new data cable...and disconnect all other drives except the OS boot drive and move the faulty SATA to another SATA slot on the MBoard.I have tried different sata cables and disconnected the other drives . I have also connected the faulty drive to different  sata slots.Right clik My Computer...select Manage then Disk Management...
Right clik on the Maxtor and select Properties...
What does it say ? ?The faulty HD shows in BIOS and Device Manager, it does not show in Disk Managment.Try on another machine...SpinriteI have just tried Spinrite on faulty drive. 'Drive 0  add on controller empty {empty drive}'. message 'Some drive items will be troublesome. One or more partition items have trouble which will prevent Spinrite from operating properly'. I have just tried Spinrite on faulty drive. 'Drive 0  add on controller empty {empty drive}'. message 'Some drive items will be troublesome. One or more partition items have trouble which will prevent Spinrite from operating properly'.
It does appear that part of the drive has failed.  If Spinrite has failed, the drive is dead.  Data can be retrieved if you have $500-1000 to spend on a Recovery Service.  They swap the electronics from an identical drive and then see if the platters (discs) are readable.  Drive is probably still under warranty, so you should be able to get a new drive.  You will have to run the Maxtor tools on the drive, it will produce an error code and that's the code you provide to warranty returns when you call for an RMA.  Call Maxtor, they'll tell you what you have to do.

Solve : CPU fan high speed on boot, gradually slows down?

Answer»

I run Vista on a homemade desktop.  My CPU fan had never changed its operation in the 6 months I ran Vista until a few weeks ago.  Previously my CPU fan would always come on at its highest velocity immediately after starting.  After about 20 or 30 seconds it would gradually slow down, and within probably 10 seconds it would be at the appropriate level.  (I have a continuously variable speed CPU fan, and I have it set pretty much in the middle.)  About a month ago, it STARTED staying at maximum velocity WELL after the system is booted, and 1-2 minutes after Vista is fully loaded it would then gradually come down.  Other times it would start out the predetermined speed and would not be at high velocity at all during the boot sequence.  And yet other times it would perform its old standard and drop velocity about 30 seconds into boot.  I formatted and reinstalled Vista about a week ago because I was having some issues in addition to this and tried to format as a cure-all, but this issue remained.  My assumption is that the problem may lie with the BIOS, but I have not actually rummaged around in there yet.  Any ideas?  There are probably accumulated dust bunnies in there causing it to take longer to cool to the proper operating temp...

Time for some housekeeping.
Remove all power to the machine.
Remove a side panel and use a can of compressed air to clean all fan's and housings and any heatsinks you see including the vid card.
Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place when blasting them to prevent damage.

As always when working inside the case take anti-static precautions...That's not it.  It's clean.CPU fan speed is DETERMINED by CPU duty usage and how hot it's getting.  If it's not oveheating, don't worry about it.  It's probably getting to 100% usuage due to some program or update change, or malware or spyware. Quote from: jtr on November 18, 2009, 11:29:43 AM

That's not it.  It's clean.

OK i give up...Even though this is happening during the boot sequence?  I'm not overly worried about it.  It's just weird, and a bit annoying.

Solve : No display.?

Answer» LATELY my screen keeps going BLANK. All indicator lights is still on and i can still hear the CPU fan. The LIGHT on the screen just went from green to orange. This is really frustrating because its either i press the ON BUTTON again or SWITCH the power point OFF the ON again to restart my PC.  If the standby light on the display is coming on it means it is not receiving a signal to power up. This could be a problem with the video card, the display itself, or the power settings on your system. I'd check the last one first - go to Control Panel, Power Options and make sure the display is not set to power down after a specific period of time. Then you can try a different display and see if it has the same problem. If it does, the problem is obviously not the display itself. If this is a LCD monitor, it's possible the builtin power supply has failed or is failing......Seems to be a common problem, did you have any high pitch squeal from the monitor before it started to fail?...It sometimes will work fine for months before it finally dies.....I recently had a Samsung LCD do the exact same thing....and less than three years old......samsung replaced the monitor no questions asked under warranty,,...as Allan has said, replace the monitor with a known good unit and see if the problem is fixed.

Solve : Dynamic HDD?

Answer»

I have a Sata II 80gb HDD that is formatted as "Dynamic" and I WANT to get it back to "Partition - Basic". Is it possible? How would I do it?

Thanks

GerryNot if it's your boot DISK.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314343
WARNING: After you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, local access to the dynamic disk is limited to Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. Additionally, after you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, the dynamic volumes cannot be changed back to partitions. You must first delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then convert the dynamic disk back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, you must first back up the data or move it to another volume. My boot disk is an 80 gb IDE drive and has XP on it. Data storage is on a 1 terrabyte drive (SATA II)

The drive I want to convert back is a 80gb SATA II drive - I have deleted the volumes but cannot find a way to format as "Partition - Basic" just going round in circles. When I get it back I will disconnect the IDE drive and set the 80gb Sata as the boot *censored* with Windows 7.

I would be grateful for any help.

Gerry  You have 3 drives:
80GB IDE -  WinXP Boot Drive
1TB - Storage
80GB SATA - Future Win7 Boot Drive

I haven't done this, but I suspect you Delete Volume and then Create Partition, then Format.  If Windows won't do it, try PARTED Magic.

You can ALSO download the HDD manufacturer's tools for partitioning and formatting.  Some versions are for Windows, others create bootable CD's.

Solve : restored hard drive, now no room?

Answer»

I have windows XP, SP3. I had a virus and was loading "stopzilla" AV. While loading that NEW program, I was deleting McAfee AV and my system went into a reboot loop.
I F8, and attempted to go into safe mode. when I went into safemode, the system rebooted and went back to options of safemode, I could not getinto my system.

I did a emergency START up and did a recovery, the recovery point was from inception in 2007. Why it did not read any of my recovery points I had set, I don't know.

I proceeded with the recovery, it copied all data on my HDD, I have a 50 GB HDD.
The entire drive showed up as full, I deleted pictures and general files, which deleted the copy and the original.
Seeing this I stopped deleting my data.
I loaded my new AV, and MS Office programs.

My system is working, and I can get into it, I have LOST my home network, but the wireless system is working.

I am defragmenting the drive CURRENTLY.

How do I get my system back to having available disk space on my HDD?

My current programs are MS office, Stopzilla, a couple of printers and MS streets and trips.
Any ideas?

Thank you

Solve : Suspected problem with dual video cards; monitor dark.?

Answer»

Hi, guys. I've returned with yet another problem..
I'm running a:

Quote

Dell XPS710
Intel Core2 CPU 6400 2.13 Ghz
2 GB RAM

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3
Dual nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS cards (driver 6.14.11.8618 - 06/10/09)
DirectX 9.0c

I just replaced the hard drive after a complete failure (quality parts.. thanks again, Dell!) and now that I have it back up and running I figured I would install Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2.

A little background; prior to my HD crashing, I was having some heat ISSUES.. the display would zoom in randomly.. I would reboot and the display would not return. I ended up opening the case and cleaning out two YEARS worth of filth and it seemed to solve the issue.

Since the new HD installation, everything has been running seemingly fine. After playing GRAW 2 for the first time on the new HD, after exiting the game, I had the screen zooming again. I went to reboot and again, the display would not appear (STANDBY light on, however). I let the computer sit for about eight hours with the case open for cooling, and when I booted it again, there was no issue. Later that day, I played GRAW 2 again, and after playing, again, the display zoomed. After booting, however, the display has yet to return.

I've tried to boot at least nineteen times, I've let the the PC sit unpowered with a room fan blowing on for over ten hours, nothing is working. I removed the video cards, cleaned out any dust, returned them and tried.. NO-GO. I've tried all of the four DVI-D ports, NO-GO. The monitor has power and is responsive in between port swaps, which leads me to believe that the issue is the video cards. I'm not sure what my next move should be. I have a feeling at some point the cards will work again but I may just be in denial. If I can't get them up and running again, I need help choosing and affordable / but good for gaming card that can RUN high-end games such as Crysis and GRAW 2. Any help is appreciated!

You have provided a lot of background, but all you say is you have "screen zooming", WHATEVER that means.  You have 2 video cards and both monitors are doing the same thing at the same time?  Or 1 is dark and 1 is "zooming"?I'm running two cards in SLI for one monitor, so it's just the one.

The computer plays the sound byte like I were connecting new hardware and the resolution goes from normal to zoomed in. Everything is HUGE and total area of display cannot be seen at one time. I can view the unseen portions by mousing toward them.. the display will scroll in that direction.

Solve : Someone really messed up this HDD.?

I guess the problem wasn't solved as it has now been a day and it is still installing XP pro. It's progressing, just at a snails pace. I had successfully installed windows 7 on the machine but the task manager reported 100% CPU usage even though the SYSTEM was at idle. I thought MAYBE Win 7 was too heavy for the machine so i proceeded to install XP. Now I'm where I'm at now.

The original OS was XP for net tops.

Its an eMAchine el1200-06w.

*  Here is my original question  *

A friend of mine had her son try to install windows seven on a fairly new desktop. She wanted a clean install to GET rid of viruses and spyware she had on the machine so he deleted all of the partitions on the drive in an attempt to get rid of any malicious software on the machine. The only problem is that he also deleted the small partition on the drive I have been told you should never delete and now I am having problems getting a new os on her pc for her. Should I tell her her son has permanently destroyed her hdd and price her a new one, or is there a way to fix the one in question? Any help would be greatly appreciated by both of us. She is tight on money at the moment and her daughter needs the pc for online classes.is this branded pc? or clone?

Probably a mistake to install Win7, unlikely to be any Win7 drivers.  He didn't destroy the HDD. He deleted the Restore partition, so he's in the same boat as Win7, no drivers.  Will have to contact eMachines to see what they can do.

It's always been a good machine, so i have no complaints with it. I'm just trying to get it going again, so hopefully i won't have to go to the expense of locating another HDDMy hard drive is ok. The problem turned out to be a bad memory module(s). The other codes were TELLING my that it was the RTC module.Ebay doesn't have any memory modules for my machine, so i' giess i'll have to hit the ol' WWW, and see what i can dig up. Thanks for your help folks, it's greatly appreciated.Check the Vintage Computer forums.I am surprised that I am not the only one that tried fixing one of these and failed multiple times. I have two motherboards, a hard drive, floppy drive, a power supply, some memory (SIMMs), several Dallas clock chips , and some mounting brackets for the drives. Even though it may seem that these computers are built with higher quality than newer ones. . . They suck! Both of the motherboards that I have are wired very strangely. They used thin gauge wires to connect many solder POINTS on the back of the motherboards and then HOT glued them down as if they were too lazy to actually put it into the circuit board. They all look like prototypes and each board is arranged differently. I'll admit they do work well, if you can get the clock chip working.

Quote
The other codes were telling my that it was the RTC module.

Yes, it is more likely the Dallas Real Time Clock than the memory. And if it is memory, I do have some of that. The problem with the Dallas clock chip is that the battery is EMBEDDED. They stopped manufacturing them a long time ago, so you won't be able to find any that are still alive. That was my problem. I kept ordering them and none would work. I wasted a lot of money on this piece of **** machine. The only way you can get one of these computers to work is to hack the Dallas clock chip and install an external battery. There are several tuts on google that show you how to do this. Just type something like 'Rework Dallas clock chip' and you'll find some tuts. I tried a tutorial, and did everything as they described and couldn't get it to boot. I usually try not to give up on these kind of things, but I did with this one.

If you would like any parts, I could put them up on ebay for you.

Any help appriciated

I would recommend taking a look at this for a gaming laptop.

Toshiba Qosmio X500Thats a nice one but it's over my budget... my question was which of the setups is better...why not give the full specs of the laptop rather then a few details?because the have the almost exact same setup exept for this...Why not just follow BC's ADVICE and post full specs of each laptop?

Why not post what your budget is and we may be able to find you a better laptop at a cheaper price?

If you are going to be gaming do you have to have a laptop as you can get a better desk top for the same amount of money?

I why not post this in the "Off Topic" section instead of putting "off topic" in the subject line?Moved to Computer Hardware Section.

Please post full specs of both laptops.Computer number 1.

Anyone that got a solution please help.Check the settings in Power Options in Control Panel and make sure you don't have it set to power down the dislplayEverything is set to maximum performance. It still happens. Further discription of the problem: Before the screen DIES, most of the time, its when i do smth, anything from pressing print page to INSTALLING programs. But sometimes, it happens when i didn do anything to it. It just hangs for awhile then go blank together with the SPEAKER which goes completely silent. If anyone got a solution, please tell me. Thanks alot. What happens in safe mode?Trying safe mode now. Btw, what if it nvr hangs in safe mode, does that mean i gonna use my computer in safe mode forever? lolsNo.
It does mean however you've narrowed it down to s driver issue... Quote from: patio on November 20, 2009, 07:21:02 AM

No.
It does mean however you've narrowed it down to s driver issue...
Or some sort of software conflictSo far doesnt seem to have any problem.Okay. Open msconfig and on the startup tab choose "selective startup" (disable everything) and reboot. Everything good?trying it now.ok it still happen when i was SHUTTING down the comp lolswell not only for shutting down, it even happen when i startup my computer.Okay, then as patio said above it's probably a driver issue. Go back to normal startup from msconfig. Download and install the latest driver for your video card (from the OEM website) and make sure you have the correct driver for your display installed. Then go to display properties and make certain the correc display is shown. Also, go back into power options and check the advanced settings to make sure the display is not set to power down.ive updated the driver and set everything to the correct setting[ i THINK] but it still occur, just that not so often.

Solve : Computer will not boot up!!!?

Answer»

Hi, I have an HP desktop computer at home that will not boot up. It is an HP Pavilion 576x with an Intel Celeron solo-core
processor. It will power on and everything, but after it gets past the screen where you can go to BIOS settings or system recovery, it goes to a black screen and at the top it SAYS, "Operating System not found," and I dont KNOW what to make of it. I've even tried setting the BIOS settings back to default settings but I dont know what to do about it. Also, I've tried RUNNING Linux on it, but at the home screen everything is shifted to the left and theres a thick black border where the screen should be. Can anyone please help. All comments are appreciated. ThxWhen you tried Linux, did you access the windows partition and examine it for anything obvious?

Did you try pressing auto-adjust on your monitor and/or changing resolution?does at have any unusual beeps on startuphmmm, I bet I just didn't adjust the monitor display correctly when I tried Linux on it. As in unusual beeps, no there wasn't anything that was abnormal during booting until it gets right past the screen where you can access the BIOS settings and recovery. Ill try checking the hard drive to see if its damaged or anything, I never even THOUGHT of that. Thanks guys

Solve : New PC Build, Freezing Issue?

Answer»

Hello,

I built a new PC for my roommate recently. He knows next to nothing about PCs, but told me he could install windows himself. I've done my research and know more than the basics but I am by no means an expert or anything.

Basically the PC freezes within a couple of minutes of being turned on. No blue screen or anything, and no overheating issues in the BIOS. A very odd thing to add is that if we have a twitch stream or youtube video OPEN, it does not freeze and is fully functioning for however long the video stays open. As soon as we close the video, the PC freezes. I ran sfc /scannow and it found some corrupted files in the operating system, and I replaced those, but it still freezes. We're doing a clean install of windows right now, should I be confident that it will fix the issue? Or should I be concerned that the RAM/SSD are not seated properly or are corrupted or something?

Hardware:
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING-ITX/TB3 Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard  (he need the thunderbolt connection for a preamp thing for recording)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
EVGA GeForce GT 640 2 GB Video Card   (this is my old gpu that I gave to him, I never had any problems with it)
EVGA B5 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully Modular ATX Power SupplyI have checked thru the items in your list and all appear compatible except the  GeForce GT 640, this GPU is known to  cause windows 10 to BSOD there doesn't seem to be a fix except getting a newer card. If you are not installing Windows 10 then the other hardware (motherboard and CPU) will cause BSOD. And as the Ryzen 5 3600 doesn't have an integrated GPU you will need a graphics card supported by Windows 10.

Solve : Is my PC likely done at this point??

Answer»

I have a HP I5 BS1XX i3, the PC is just under three years (it will be three in April).

I've posted here about BSOD's that I was having when the battery was plugged in. The BSOD's do not happen when the battery is not in and the device is powered straight from mains. However, I did get a STOP 0x9F error code the other day which probably suggests that the problem is more than just the battery being faulty?

I have been having issues with the WIFI adapter as well recently. The WIFI used to power off before the BSOD's struck and I suspected something may have been wrong with that at first.

I even tried using an EXTERNAL wifi adapter which will not solve the lost connection issue so it is probably more than just the Wifi adapters at fault?

I managed to correct the issue by using the Netshare app to reroute the wifi from my Android device (the PC then works well when it is on the internet without cutting).

I'm now under the belief that the PC has too many issues to bother about repairing.

The housing is also damaged from a fall in late 2019 and I have it together with superglue so perhaps components may have loosened over time?

The one good thing is that it is still fairly fast and can my work done for now. I'm under the impression that I should probably just USE it until it dies for good and then savage whatever I can and invest in a new laptop?

Or is there something I can do to fix the wifi issue?

For your reference, the BSOD dump files can be found on the following link. (Apologies, I tried to attach it here but it was over 1mb).

https://gofile.io/d/3QiNvwIf you replace the battery as suggested earlier you may get another year or two SERVICE out of it...up to you.

Don't buy a generic this time...I would consider it but do you have any idea what is likely the cause of the WIFI issue?

As mentioned, it is not connecting well to my router. It only works for about 10-15 minutes if connected to the router and then disconnects. I tried from both the internal wifi card and a USB wifi adapter which I bought.

The WIFI does work perfectly when I either reroute via my phone (via Netshare) or RUN a hotspot directly from my phone.

If this is likely a hardware issue, I'm guessing the PC is probably not worth investing further in but the fact  that both the wifi card and USB adapter have issues to maintain he router signal gives a glimmer of hope.

think ill just fork out and buy a decent secondhandy.

This was not always true for Win98....

dunno which one your referring to, but I did forget that win98 would boot into safe-mode AUTOMATICALLY if it has problems loading drivers. Of course if that was the case then Safe Mode would be written on all four corners, which would likely have been mentioned.

Solve : Help recording with Line-in (Laptop)?

Answer»

I don't know why, but I can't record with line-in. Now, I have a line-in jack, and my line-in is unmuted, but it won't work. I remember being able to record with line-in flawlessly on an old desktop I had, with just speakers plugged in. I have speakers plugged into my line-in jack, but nothing happens. Blank. Totally blank.

If you need to know, I have a Realtek High Definition audio card that came with the laptop.Bump? I need help... D:Welcome to the CH forums.

Quote

I have speakers plugged into my line-in jack, but nothing happens

That's a novel approach.   Line-in is an INPUT socket, i.e. the socket accepts input from an external device such as the line-out of an amplifier or from an earphone socket (don't use the speaker output from an amp, the rating is probably too great).  Line-in will probably not detect any input from speakers which are OUTPUT devices..

I suggest you try recording using the line-output socket on something like a record/dvd/tape player.

Good luck
But I don't get it. I was before able to record with Line-in with only REGULAR speakers. Now you're telling me to use Line-out? I have no line-out. I'm probably misunderstanding you, so could you rephrase in layman's terms?

Of course, it didn't really help when you WENT from line-in to line-out...

Quote

HELP PLZwhat he meant is the line in jack is for when you want to PLUG an external device like an ipod or a stereo receiver. The line out is for only speakers or connecting your laptop to a stereo Quote
Of course, it didn't really help when you went from line-in to line-out...

Mmmmm.

Most audio devices (and here I'm not just talking computers) have FACILITIES to input and output signals.   You will note that I said Quote
Line-in is an INPUT socket, i.e. the socket accepts input from an external device such as the line-out of an amplifier or from an earphone socket
Note that bit wot says "from an external device such as the line-out of an amplifier or....".

So, the Line-in(put) socket on your pc accepts input from the line-out of an external device such as an amplifier.

Get the picture?  The amplifier has a line-out(put) connection which is linked to the line-in(put) of the pc.  Output sockets could be marked as "Audio Out" or "Earphones" or just have a symbol to indicate an output socket.

The audio signal is generated by the player, passed to the amplifier and is available at the line-out socket of the amplifier.   From the line-out socket of the amplifier it is connected to the line-in socket of your pc which will make it available to whatever audio player/recorder software is in use to be output to your speakers and/or recorded.

| Player |-->--| Amplifier |-->amplifier line-out-->--//-->--PC Line-in-->| pc |

(Note: The player and amplifier may be contained in one unit)

Quote
I was before able to record with Line-in with only regular speakers

Try plugging your speakers into the Mic socket, it might work (see here..)

Good luck again.

Solve : Fan keeps coming on over and over....LOUD?

Answer»

I've been having a very weird problem lately with my internal fan. It seems like when i do anything...For instance...Open Mozilla to browse the internet, my internal fan will kick in and stay on for like 5 minutes at a time. Whenever i run any application it will come on and start a cycle of on and off for up to a half hour. Sometimes it will come on by it self for no reason when the computer is just sitting there. I tried cleaning the dust off of the vents and cleaning the motherboard and internal fans with no luck. I also tried to move it out into the open with no luck.  What can i do to STOP this fan from GOING crazy ?  Any help would be very much appreciated...THANKS !!!! Perhaps all the computer is trying to do is keep the computer cool.

I suggest downloading Speedfan and posting the temperatures.Speedfan says the CPU is 66C or 67C at all times.  Is there a safe way to set it so the fans will only come on when it gets to a certain temperature ? Thanks for your help !!!!Are those idle temperature? Those are pretty hot for a computer.

I'm not sure about any software that will do this for you but I suggest, for now, you get another fan (an external fan like a tower fan or something) and aim it directly at your computer.

See if this helps your 'fan spinning very loud' question.

If that is the cpu running idle... I would suggest you get a better heatsink and fan... or, I would remove the heatsink you have and use some quality thermal paste....and, what processor is it?I tried pointing a fan at the computer and it didn't seem to help. CPU temperature is 68C 69C at the moment.  The computer has a Pentium4 519 (P) 3.06 GHz inside.... Here is more info on the computer...http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1144703&docname=c00487770I thought i would add that the temperature has gotten as high as 80C with only me browsing the internet. It was very brief and quickly went back down to 68C. RIGHT now it's idle temperature  is 69C or 70C....  I have a feeling this is not NORMAL....What can i do to correct this problem ?you can buy an aftermarket heatsink.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1023&subminorcatid=28

any socket 775 heatsink will work in your computer. pick one according to your budget and your tastes. im pretty sure any one of the CPU heatsinks listed there will be better then your stock cooler.Your Pentium MAX, temps, depending on model, are listed at 67.7-72.8C, so I wouldn't even use the computer, until apply some fixes.

Solve : old laptop CD-ROM having problems...?

Answer»

I've got an older laptop, a Toshiba Satellite 440CDX. It's running Windows 98SE. I haven't travelled extensively, so it has essentially been sitting dormant for over a year.

However, RECENTLY, I decided I'd reformat it, as it had acquired far too much SOFTWARE for it's own good. So I attempted to insert my Windows 98 CD, (this is a burned copy), and access it in command prompt, only to be greeted by "device not ready". Strange. I assumed I had burned the CD at a speed that was too fast, or something similar. So, I re-burned the CD at 4x, and attempted to view it's contents. Same problem. Strange- So I now attempted to use a commercial CD-ROM, I can't recall the actual software, but I believe it was a game of some sort- no luck. still "Drive not ready" error. As a final attempt, I placed ONE of my Music CDs in it- and it worked. Same with all of my burned Music CDs.

I can't SEEM to figure this out- it has worked perfectly for me for quite some TIME- Any suggestions?

Solve : Computer won't boot up ??

Answer»

I have a emachines computer here that is only a year old that will only sometimes boot up...(VERY VERY rarely). The weird thing is when i replaced the hard drive it worked long enough for me to install windows, but then a hour LATER i turned it on again and it did the same thing. When i power it on the fans will come on super loud and just spin until it either boots up or i unplug it. I tried to add a cheap PCI-Express graphics card thinking something was wrong with the on board one with no LUCK.  I also tried replacing the hard drive with no luck. I can boot into the bios, but only sometimes...(VERY rarely) The other weird thing is it won't display on any monitor even in the bios unless i connect it to my 40 inch LCD...LOL. I tried 4 different monitors and the only thing the bios will boot on is my TV. This COULD be that it just happens to boot up when hooked up to my TV, but figured i would explain everything thats happening.   One thing i did notice that was strange was....One TIME it booted up to the bios and all of the lettering had lines through it and looked like GIBBERISH. Of course it froze and i had to reboot... This is the weirdest problem i've seen to date with a computer. Can anyone help me...LOL ? I know this seems "OUT THERE", but i'm officially stumped.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.... Let me know if anyone wants to know further information about what the computer is doing. The local computer place wants 80$ just to look at it and i have a feeling it's not good, so i really don't want to spend 80$ and then figure out my computer is shot. THANKS !!!!  With it connected to the 40-inch...

Can it boot into Safe Mode?the emachines come with a under powered not dependable power supply.

See if you can get another one to swap out for a test.....

I was going to recommend that, Spoiler, but changed my mind when he stated it worked fine on his 40-inch LCD.

eMachines, though...are famous for power supply issues.I forgot to mention in my original post that i tried the power supply out of my HP computer with no luck.  When i get off work i will try to boot into safe mode and post back the results. THANKS
!!!!
