Solve : OS install?

Answer»

This may sound a big bit naive,My HDD failed &had to put in a new one. Have license key, but not install disc. Am i able to use my key on someone elses install disc ?david6682 How is it you have the product code and not the original disk ?
Are you refering to an original Windows cd or a propioratory install/restore set ?

dl65 dl65 thanks for your response. The PC was bought as a package & XP home was ALREADY installed. The key is on a sticker on the PC cabinet. I did receive a restore disc, it won't open in the old hdd,but it does in the new hdd. All it wants to do is start the ghosting process but there is nothing to ghost. You need to contact the manuf. as each one does it a bit differently...your recovery files are on a HIDDEN PARTITION on that HDD somewhere.patio, thanks for your response,I'll heed that advice. Being a technological dinosaur definitely has it's disadvantagesBest of Luck to you and don't TAKE no for an answer...remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

new hard drive failure? I haven't owned computers very long but i've learned more from broken computers than computers i've had some axces toover the years. I'm stumped on this one. Desk top Dell Dimension XPS T550 pentium3 slave HD IBM 13.6GB and new WD 2500JB drive parameters LBA48839168 250 gb only know what half of that MEANS. 512 mb ram biaos verversion A11 TSST CD/dvdw sh-s162 secondary ied slaveLighteon dvd rom ltd 163. Forgot WD is primary master. got computer used it was having prolems so I reinstalled windows XP pro and not knowing much made a mistake somewhere and all memory used up in 1 week. so I went out and got a driver wash. did wash and cp would not no matter what I did show the old Maxtor HD went on line with Dell detremined that HD was bad. Went and got new WD HD. Installed windows XP pro copy disk. Every thing great then trying to uninstall program everything started flashing and shut down. On restart screen goes into bios fine both hd their every thing looks good exit bios and nothing but blinking cursor. I TOOK slave and installed it in primary and put wd in slave installed windows on that could view every thing on wd hd but not my things that I was working on at the time of the event. So I did another driver wash installed same system downloaded sp2 right away. Good for about two weeks. Than another event. Turning off cp for weekly cleaning didn't even get to the cleaning wife WANTED to go on line and view things. Turn system on and same screen blinkie. I don't want to go through all again and again. I do reg maintance on cp both to sw and HW as well. clean machine runs well. Im on old dell latitude that was told by geek squad would never work right now just needed a little tlc. Never had any problems with lap top and it uses the same windows disk as desk top. Want to save info from WD than RETURN and throw down the extra $ for quality hd. PLEASE IF YA GOT HART HELP and from now on I will take time to back that thang up.It's difficult to tell exactly what happened by your style of writing, and some of your terms are not accurate. Filled up memory in 1 week? I guess you mean hard drive. Driver wash? Who knows what that means. You may want to start over to clarify.

At the very least, every computer needs it's own legal copy of Windows.

Solve : Fried (?) Western Digital HDD?

Answer»

I know of several people who ended up with two dead hard drives attempting this.Quote

Quote
Don't destroy that hard drive just yet. There is another way. Get a hard disk that has the same firmware, PCB chips, and close to the same SERIAL number. Take the PCB off the new hard disk, take the damaged PCB off next, and replace the old PCB on the old hard drive with the new hard disk's PCB, screw it back on, and it just might work again.

That is exactly what I was thinking, except replacing everything but the platters, since I suspect motor's bust, my only concern was that the new platters wouldn't get 'rejected', ie the new hard drive would simply refuse to read the platter because of some sort of incompatibility. My suspicion is that the motor is somehow screwed up. Working from the fact that there is zero resistance across my 12v and 5v to GROUND is zero, I am thinking that the insulation on the motor may have gotten screwed, and I suspect that area was extremely hot, seeing as to how there are blisters of paint on the underside of the drive in that REGION.

However my concern lies in how that happened. One of the explanations I conceive is that the motor OPERATION was physically obstructed by the reading heads, which means the platters would be damaged, especially if this happened at high speeds, then I'd expect to have a pretty big groove on those platters. According to my calculations this would be like crashing into the ground at over 200km/hour.

This could all be settled by opening it, but this would of course void the warranty and of course these drives aren't cheap.

I'm not so much AFRAID of getting dust in the drive etc, I've seen exposed (ODP frame) motors work for 20 years in really corrosive environments, and drive heads do not contact the platters, so I do not see a little dust being an issue. But I am afraid for those reading heads that lie ever so close to the platters.

rr5678, did you have an experience (with a happy ending maybe?) or perhaps know of such an article? Because I would really like to research this before I waste any more hard drives.

Thank you so much for your input

Solve : Two monitors, a splitter & ghosting?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I've just made my plasma a second computer monitor. Note that it's not a dual monitor setup. Both MONITORS show exactly the same THING. It's not an extended desktop, etc.

PROBLEM: Ghosting on my PC monitor when using a monitor splitter CABLE.

Here's how it's connected:

1) M to 2F monitor splitter cable connected to video port of PC
2) PC monitor connects to one of the Female connectors on the splitter
3) Plasma connects to the other Female CONNECTOR on the splitter via a 10m video extension cable

As soon as the splitter was introduced, the PC monitor started ghosting a bit. Then when I introduced the plasma, it ghosted heaps. The plasma, on the other hand, doesn't ghost at all.

Any IDEAS what's going on how to fix it?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Solve : GA-K8NS Pro Hangs on Post screen now with weird ID?

So i recently installed a watt meter that came with a power supply i bought a good year AGO, and when i turned my COMPUTER back on it wouldnt go past the post screen. the screen looks like this.

I cannot enter any of those modes either when i press DEL or F9...I read on another forum that said to take the cmos battery out for 30 seconds but i tried that and nothing happend. Anybody have any ideas on what the problem is? i did try unplugging the new watt meter also.I'd borrow another PSU with at LEAST the same wattage or more and try that.Try booting from a floppy and going into bios and reset ESCD.I have the same board, your BIOS version is F4 is way out of DATE, now F13, however from the site FAQ's on how to use the F9 recovery go to http://uk.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/FAQ_Model.aspx?FAQID=390&ProductID=1783&ClassValue=Motherboard

Solve : whacked out mouse??

Answer»

ok, so i'm using an old pc, win 98 , 512 ram, not much , but it works.. but sometimes, randomly, my mouse ( ps2) goes crazy.. when i try to move it, it moves in its own direction, opens RANDOM files, moves my tool bars, other stuff.. and the only way i can get it to quit is restarting

i've ran anti virus ( avg) a few times, and it doesnt find anything.. do i just need a new driver, or what? What do mean it opens random files? Does it look LIKE it is being remotely controlled? Also, try another mouse.no, not really being controlled.. and if i TURN off my net, it still does it.. it just clicks on random spots on the desktop
dont have another mouse, but u think i need a new one? tried cleaning this one, doesnt seem to do muchIf it just randomly jumps around a lot, I would recommend getting a new one. Also do you know exactly what kind of mouse it is?UM.. dunno.. two button microsoft mouse, offwhite.. thats bout itThe only thing I can think of is the mouse itself, when you can, get a new mouse and test it out.Quote

um.. dunno.. two button microsoft mouse, offwhite.. thats bout it

That is an old one. A repacement is pretty cheap. Why not borrow SOMEONE's for a while and taking it for a test drive to see where the problem is?if it is an old mouse as is the pc the unscrew the ball and clean the rollers as dirt or verdigrease gets rolled into the mouse as you use it. there should be a large round flange twist that of the ball will come out then you will see the two wheels, an spirit or alcohol cleaner should do it.

Solve : ASUS P4P800SE AGP Graphics Problem?

Answer»

This is my first time posting, let me say this is a nice site. Anyhow, a couple of years ago I bought an ASUS P4P800SE motherboard this board refuses to load an AGP ATI card I get the initial splash screen when windows starts to load drivers my screen goes blank and stays that way, the only way it WORKS is with Omega drivers. I tried a PNY board, an ASUS board now I have a Sapphire 9250 256mb. I tried it all, DISABLING serial ports, parallel ports, removing all unnecessary cards different monitor I have an old ATI 128 Rage PRO that works perfectly when I install it. ASUS was no help in fact told me if I SEND the board to them they will just send it back to with a NOTHING wrong note. Oh as an after thought when I when I Install these cards in a machine with an Intel motherboard everything installs smooth as silk. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.
If this posting is not appropriate just delete it.Have you enabled AGP in the BIOS ? ?
You also need to check both the MBoard specs and the AGP card specs to make sure they are compatible...AGP cards came with 2 different voltage patterns and they are not interchangeable.
Check both manuf. site if you do not have documentation.

Solve : sound card: XP says it works but it doesn't?

Answer»

I gave my old computer to a FRIEND. It has a Soundblaster Live Value. It is 4 or 5 years old but was working until I set it up at his place. I can't GET any sound out of the speakers except the startup beep. In the control panel it says it is working properly, however, some of the tabs such as "Sound PLAYBACK Default DEVICE" are shaded and therefore will not allow me to make any use of them. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the card into different PCI slots and also updated the drivers, all at least twice. When I TRY to play an audio CD, both Windows Media and iTunes say that there could be a problem, and there is. I have also made sure that the account has admin priveleges. All else seems to be working fine.

Any ideas?Try it in a different PC.
Clean the contacts gently with an eraser.
And completely uninstall the drivers, then reinstall them.

Solve : Installation New IDE cd/dvd?

Answer»

My 2 brand new cd/dvd drives are not working . I installed them with the ide cord and power . I turned on the computer and saw them as the boot page flashed by . They will not WORK . The hardware checker says that the configuration is wrong or bad .
I didn't do anything except install them ...there is no software and if there was ...i can't load it on the drives ..
What is wrong ?
Bobby Well, first of all...new drives need drivers. Go to the MANUFACTURER's site and download the appropriate drivers. Make sure you get the ones made for your OS. Which OS do you have, by the way?Check how they are jumpered on the back of each drive. The one at the end of the IDE ribbon cable should be Master or Master W/ Slave and the one on the MIDDLE CONNECTOR should be slave.
You did remove all power when you installed them correct ? ?
And as CBMatt asked what OS are you running ? ? They might not need drivers.

Solve : RAID 0 Recovery / Defective disk??

Answer»

Hi all,

I have a 250Gb seagate barracuda hard drive (SATA 150) set up by itself in a RAID 0 configuration. The last couple of days, Windows XP has repeatedly insisted on a data integrity check and had problems with a particular sector (but no data lost).

However, on switching on today, the computer hung , and on reboot NONE of the drives (I have 3 hard drives, 2 on IDE 2 and 1 on the SATA) were recognised as existing. I checked the cabling and the 2 ide drives reappeared, but FastTrak insists that no RAID array is set up on my main drive. There are no arrays set up at all.

I have ordered a replacement drive, and recovery software to make an image copy of the apparently arrayless drive. I am not sure what would happen if I told fastbuild to build a NEW array... would I lose all data?

More importantly, why did the raid array INFORMATION dissappear? Is it likely that my drive is dying (I have only had it 14 months).? :-?

I'm running an Asus K8V motherboard with an Athon 64 3000+ and 1024Mb Ram. Problems started with my usb WIRELESS keyboard going on the fritz and difficulties getting my e-mu 1616 to be recognised. I had just got it working last night and then the drive goes weird on me.

Cheers for any help with this...

Solve : Motherboard broken or video card broken???

Answer»

I have an Asus P4R800-VM motherboard and an Xpertvision Geforce 6800GS 256mb video card. I have updated the motherboard BIOS so it is uptodate and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my video card.
My problem is since installing the video card most of my games which ran fine before installing the video card now freeze then crash. Only a few weeks ago I installed a NEW harddrive and freshly installed WindowsXP SP2.
I have put my video card in a friends computer and installed the same Nvidia driver and some of my games on it and it appears to run without problems, I thought it must be a problem with my motherboard but I put my friends Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 in my computer and it runs fine!
So I don't know if the problem is with the motherboard or the videocard.
Can someone tell me where my problem lyes, I don't want to go out and buy a new motherboard, etc to find out that it is the videocard thats to blame. I dont understand why it runs fine on my friends computer but not mine and why the 6800GS wont work on mine but the FX 5200 will!?

Many thanks in advance

GordonIf the 5200 runs in the same slot then it sounds like you have isolated the problem to the card. Keep in mind that the latest drivers may not necessarily be the best. You say the card "appears to run without problems" in your friend's computer. Does that mean it performs the way it should in his computer? Does his computer have the same driver you had installed on your computer?

Tell us more about your hardware (PROCESSOR, RAM, power supply, etc.) I THINK other hardware issues may also be causing your problem? How many Watts is your power supply? Do you know what your temperatures are running when you play games? How many fans do you have in your computer?

You said, "most of my games which ran fine before installing the video card". So, your games ran fine with integrated video, is that correct? I'm no computer expert but while downloading the BIOS update for my Asus A7N8XE DeLuxe, I believe I read a warning to the effect that if the existing BIOS works fine, to not to install the upgrade, which I saved but did not install. Anything to this?donsor, can you please make a new thread for your question?
Thanks.Quote

I played GTA San Andreas on my friends computer with my 6800gs video card and it ran perfectly, I had it in 1024x768x32b and it was super smooth. I installed the same Nvidia driver on his computer that is on mine, v93.71.
The video card has its own fan so I doubt it would be getting too hot and the games would crash before or shortly after starting the game so it would not have had time to get hot.
The games all run fine on the motherboards integrated video (ATI Radeon 9100), my computer has a 400w power supply and 256mb Ram and 2.66ghz Intel Celeron cpu(with cooling fan). My friends computer has 512mb ram and 2.81ghz cpu.

Thanks for your reply.

GordonI'm not a gamer but I know the Celeron is a poor performing processor for gaming. You also have a fairly low amount of RAM (256MB) for Windows XP and, I would guess, for gaming. And, even though you have a 400W power supply, I'm not sure we can conclude it is not a factor here. As often attested to in forums, a cheap power supply of a certain wattage rating may actually be less capable than a high quality power supply of a lower wattage rating. The fact that your system crashes when subjected to the higher power requirements of the 6800gs video card may be an INDICATION of a power supply issue.

Here’s a forum on the game you mentioned: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Subforums. You might post over there and get some ADVICE from fellow gamers.
Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at my friends computer and find out what wattage his psu is, it may be worth 'borrowing' his psu to see if that is the problem (I'm sure he wont mind )
It may not be related but a while back I purchased an additional ram module (which was listed in the motherboard manual as being compatible and recommended by asus) but when it was installed the computer became unstable and would crash, they sent me another simm and it was the same, so maybe my motherboard has some issues ??

Thanks again

Solve : Cannot boot properly - Motherboard trouble? bios??

Answer»

PCCHIPS M955G
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz 533FSB
3DLABS Oxygen GVX1 Pro
Windows 2000

Hi, it all started when I had trouble booting my computer. It sometimes freezes during STARTUP at a screen that says Initializing intel boot agent. Ok... sometimes it starts and sometimes it did not. Then I was not able to boot at all. And I could not access the BIOS or CMOS Setup.

I was able to make some progress. I removed ide, pci cards and cleared cmos. Still no change. Then I removed AGP card and cleared the cmos. This worked as I got a boot screen that said my cmos was wrong and to press f1 to change or f2 to use defaults. However, no matter what i do the very next time I boot the video is all scrambled and the computer freezes right away. I have repeated this process a few times with the exact same response.

A few things to note.
-Right after I clear the cmos and boot for the first time, the speed of the memory that is shown on the boot screen is wrong.
-If I install AGP card, the initial boot screen never shows.

Help please. Thank you.

This MUST be part of your mobo driver set. Do you have the mobo CD ?
Prior to these troubles, did you make any hardware or software CHANGES ?

Your mobo model # suggests that you have integrated video as well as an AGP slot. At this stage I would keep things simple and use the on-board video.
When you get to this point, have you tried F1 and verified that you have on-board video enabled?

I wouldn't worry about the memory speed now. You are probably set to slower, safer default settings.

I like the idea of removing all the non-essentials. How about memory, have you tried paring memory down to minimum ?
If you have the mobo manual, proper memory slot population is usually detailed.Hi, no hardware or software changes. I have the mb cd. I will try going barebones with the memory. But really I am thinking that the onboard video is busted. I get only get a GOOD signal the first boot after clearing the cmos. But this first boot forces me into a f1/f2 option to use default cmos settings or modify them...then computer requires a reboot. After that, the video is all scrambled and freezes instantly. I have kept the PRIMARY graphics adapter to pci which should allow for the onboard video adapter to work. And it does send a signal... just not a good one.... on the second startup.

My hd might also might have issues as it has been singing a high pitch for awhile.

ThanksSummary:

The boot screen that allows you to modify the BIOS is not available when using a DVI-D connection to the monitor when using a 3dlabs Oxygen GVX1 Pro video card.

My onboard Video is toast.

To install Windows 2000 on a SATA drive with a PCChips M955G motherboard you need to make a floppy with the drivers on it and press f6 during install.

Finally up and running now.

Solve : No display on monitor, computer startup messed.?

Answer»

Do not know what the problem is with the computer but it will not start up properly.

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Windows XP
512mb RAM

There was a power OUTAGE or SURGE recently that caused the electricity in the house to turn on and off several times, I do not know if this damaged any of components in the computer. The computer might have been on when the outage occured (I don't know), but when I tried to start the computer it stated, in the startup screen, that I needed to insert a cd-rom for BOOTUP. I checked the bios and saw that it was no longer detecting a HDD. I tried replacing the cables between the HDD and the motherboard without any RESULTS. Soon after I stopped receiving a picture on my monitor at all. The computer powers up but does not display an image, the lights on the keyboard blink and the LED lights on the front of the computer are on, but all I hear is one beep about every 5 seconds. I think that a component may have been damaged, but I do not know what the problem is. Any HELP is appreciated.

Thanks

Solve : monitor won't start?

Answer»

A newly built computer was working fine and then the bios was reset to load optimum and now the monitor won't come on. The computer can be heard running but the monitor doesn't seem to be picked up. The monitor works fine on another computer but without the monitor we don't KNOW how to get back to the bios and put the setting back to what it was. Any advice would be appreciated.I'm not sure about this, but I guess you could try removing the CMOS battery from the computer which I think should reset BIOS SETTINGS back to default. the CMOS battery looks like a battery from a watch except it's bigger. Put the battery back in and try the monitor again. Are there 2 places the monitor can be hooked up to on the REAR of the machine ? ?
If so try the other one...with the power off and the unit unplugged. Are you getting the BIOS beep when you turn the computer on? If you aren't getting any beep, then your monitor is fine and your BIOS needs to be flashed; because it got lost.Quote from: Steel Fire on July 21, 2007, 11:25:27 PM

Solve : Boot problems?

Answer»

Hi there, stumbled on this site from google whilst looking for potential solutions to my computer problem, which is as follows:

Although it was working fine last night, this morning, out of the blue, my computer refused to boot fully. Initially it came on and stayed on but the monitor wasn't receiving a picture, so I turned off, re-set the monitor's plugs and tried again. Ever since that, when powering on the PSU fires up, the chassis fans start to whir and hard drive clicks in like normal but then everything loses power, effectively just SWITCHING itself off (this all happens over a matter of seconds before the monitor receives a picture).

I've removed and re-set all hardware (including CPU) down to the mobo and psu in an attempt to narrow down the cause, and I've more or less established that it's not getting to the point where it could be a memory/hard drive/peripheral problem, so I'm worried that it's either a dead CPU or my PSU that's developed a fault somehow.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I don't really have the means to test the CPU in another computer, and wanted to get opinions before I went around gutting other computers to see if it's a PSU problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Specs (custom built):
Asustek AM2 nForce 570 SLI ATX
AMD Athlon X2 4200
2gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM
Samsung T133 400GB hdd
Geforce 7600GT
Soundcard
Wifi card
Akasa 500 watt PSU
Windows XP ProTry another PSU first as that is about the cheapest COMPONENT to replace.

Solve : Bad Motherboard ?????????

Answer»

I wiped the hard drive in anticipation of installing XP Home for my wife to use because the PRO key was from my job and we wanted our own. When i attempted to install it got to the point where it asked on what partition I wanted to install but it said there were none AVAILABLE. I tried this with the Pro cd, same result. Then rebooting it WENT through its normal post memory check, it SEES the new hard drive and goes through the normal PCI device listings the hardware devices, irq's etc but then halts on ACPI controller. I was able to get into the bios and set all of the specs according to the motherboard MANUAL, no go. Tried other configurations, it didnt help.
I disconnected all non-essential hardware and just left the cd drive, harddrive and video card, still no go. I swapped memory but that wasnt it. Changed hard drive, same result. Was going to attempt a bios update but it requires a floppy drive (are these even made anymore) which i dont have, neither does anyone else i know, even at work. Now it wont even go into the bios, pressing Del to go into but it bypasses it and goes RIGHT to the PCI hardware listing. The CPU is only a year old, how do i know if its the motherboard that i need to replace?

Specs: Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8ANXP-D, 800 FSB, Intel Processor 3.2G, DDR2 PQI Ram,
Hitachi 200 Gb HDD, SATA HDD connection .

Disconnect the power supply and take out the battery on the motherboard for 15 or 20 minutes, then put it back in and reboot.

Solve : Help Buying new AC adapter for Toshiba Satellite P105-S6084?

Answer»

Hey all,
I RECENTLY misplaced my ac adapter for a Toshiba SATELLITE P105-S6084 during a move. without finding it for a month it's time to just BUY a new one. I've HEARD that buying universal adapters can be a bad move, but aftersearching the internet, it seems this may be my only option. So far I've only found ONE site that seems to SELL a compatible adapter which is this : http://www.impactcomputers.com/pa3469u-1aca.html# but after searching that part number on google, some other parts companies don't even list it as compatible. for example, here: http://www.getpartsonline.com/pa3469u-1aca.html?source=shopping.com&code=pa3469u%2D1aca Can anyone tell me if this part will work for my laptop, or if the case is that my P105-S6084 will take the same universal adapter that a similar more popular model will? Thanks for any help,

Solve : please help me out?

Answer»

i have an EMAC w2247
recently my buddie redid my coputer and when he gave it back there is no sound controll or when i go under the device manager it has like a question mark by the multimedia .how do i get my sound back? You haven't REALLY given us a whole lot to work with...

What OS is on this computer?
Have you talked to your friend about this PROBLEM?
What do you mean when you say he "redid" your computer? What exactly did he redo?
Did he, by any chance, install a new sound card?

Open up Device Manager and expand the Multimedia section. Find the exact device with the question mark next to it, right click, uninstall, and restart. Any LUCK?

If not, you may want to post a screenshot of your Device Manager. The answer is simple you either do not have the CORRECT sound driver installed or there is no driver at all, like Cbmatt said post you D manager Pic so we can have a look

Solve : DVD not recording?

Answer»

It seems that this problems has been happening a lot to me lately and on different computers with different software.

On this laptop: a Gateway, XP, AMD Athlon 64 ( need more info ask although i have a hijack this in another recent post ) The computer came with a software program that i've never heard of before: " Power 2 Go " but after not backing up in FOREVER i decided to do at least a MINIMAL back-up for my documents, photos, and favorite. When i drag and drop the FILES just site there and there seems to be no "record" button. Today i discover an option: Power 2 Go express which has a simple record button. When i press it it pops out the DVD and says there has been an error> allow me to recreate it and tell you what it says: it seems to be recording a small word doc for too long....i HEAR the HD turning and am waiting for the error message.
While i am waiting i wanted to say that if i use windows explorer and go to the E drive and hylight and right click it tells me the dis is full. It is a new disk DVD -R Also, there is no option to "FORMAT"?

Most of these DVD software program look basically the same to me so i do not mind what comes with the computer as long as it works. i have used Click and Burn, Nero, Roxio, Uleas Gold and a few others. Can't say that i prefer one to another. i just want it to work. The error message: Windows has encounters a problem copying this file. What do you want to do: Cancel, retry, skip.

Any advise or suggestions? BTW as i mentioned it seems that my Dad, his friend Jim, and i have been having similar problems on different computers all of which say that the disk is full. Can it be a bad batch of DVD's? and if so how is it that we all have the same problems? Not sure which brand they use but i'm going to ask them today.

Thanks,
Krypto

Solve : harddrive issue?

Answer»

Quote from: simshi993052 on July 22, 2007, 10:40:10 AM

bare with me gonna send you a picture
Ok will do after you have done let me know what you think about what that guy said about sata not working on my mobo you can even see SATA on there....if you send me a QUICK mail so i can get your adress i will mail the picture i took for you as it is too big to postmy EMAIL you should have it in your box now!
am i being a little thick who said what about your sata?
sismhiHook up both hard drives on ribbon cable IDE1...the one you want the OS installed to should be jumpered as master and connected at the end of the ribbon cable.
The other hard drive should be jumpered as slave and be on the middle ribbon cable connector.
You then have the entire IDE2 port for 2 more drives including a DVD drive.

You're MAKING this more COMPLICATED by suggesting SATA drives into the equation....again state which drive you want to boot from whether it's SATA or IDE and we'll go from there.i am thick i missed the message about the sata drives,
you should be able to put sata and ide Hdd on there if that is what you wish as for slowing it down i can not answer but aslong as uyou go into the bios and state which you want to boot from it should not be a problem
Simshi
This just keeps getting more convoluted as it goes on...I'm typing to many questions at once my bad.............i asked whether sata would work or not....... Thats odd ive got no email nor do i have a pm

ok i did try a few other things still no luck .......... the only reason i want it changed is because it takes about 10 mins to start my computer up and i dont know why but what i do know is i need to get shot of the of the 160gb harddrive but that isnt going to happen ....Get rid of ALL drives except the hard drive you want to use as your main drive.
Hook it up as master on IDE1
Hook up the DVD as master on IDE2.
Reboot and enter setup to make sure the HDD is recognised...if it is then re-boot with the XP CD in and set to first boot DEVICE and install the OS.

Once you are done and all the drivers are installed and working you can introduce the other drives one at a time...I will give that a shot cheers patio

Solve : VCR To PC?

Answer»

I wanna hook my VCR up to my computer to burn HOME MOVIES all I have is an RCA cord now do I feed the wires into the computer though the sound card and then into my VCR or do I have to have somthing in the middle I went to best buy and asked and the guy pointed me towards this thing that connected into a USB port and had an AUDIO video S cable jack on it cant I just hook the VCR into the sound card and then turn on windows movie maker and start recording or do I need that USB thing I was discribing if anyone knows what that thing is called feel free to tell me that too Good lord, buy a book on punctuation.

Typically you cannot simply hook a vcr up to your computer as there's no PLACE to hook it into. If you've got a sound card, then you've got a way to record audio from your tapes. But if you don't have a tv tuner, you can't capture the video. That's what the guy was trying to sell you at best buy, and they can range ANYWHERE from 20 bucks to 500 bucks, depending on your features.

Solve : burning dvds?

Answer»

wow i need help im so stressed! My dvd burner isnt working in fact i can never make it work. I take photos and i need to copy them and video clips onto dvd for my clients and I got it to work once and then it says nothing is on the dvd. I bought a liteon ez dub thinking i could burn them that way but now i see it says if you burn a dvd it cant be viewed on a regular dvd player? what do I do , im so stressed out. I was stupid and threw away the lite on box so I cant take it back, the package was misleading and didnt say you cant view or if im missing something help me!! I have an HP media center so if anyone can give m steps to correct this problem, Im blonde I need it simple guys! thanks ahead of time
angelThe box never said you COULD play it on a regular dvd player either.

What you're most likely doing is burning the dvd as a data dvd, so that you can copy files from COMPUTER to computer. See if your software can support photo slideshows, and if it doesn't FIND something that can. There's plenty of software out there to accomplish what you're looking for, just be sure it says something along the lines of being able to play a photo slideshow on a regular dvd player. In fact you'd EVEN be able to make photo slideshows on a cd, and SAVE some COSTS of media.

Solve : NIVDIA Geoforce 8800 gtx (upgrade)?

Answer»

Hey guys im thinking about upgrading my graphics's card again lol

can anyone tell me whether this would work ok in my computer if there is anything else i need for it to run smoothly in my computer let me know and i will look into it ..

spec in sig

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4142031&JRSource=nsa&nsa=1Yeh, sure. All the 8800 GTX needs is a PCIe x16 slot.

But your CPU is GOING to seriously be holding it back. You won't really be able to PLAY most of the current games.

I suggest you buy a WHOLE new PC. You can buy a C2D CPU, motherboard and 2GB of RAM for 300$. Thats half of what you intend to spend onthe 8800 GTX, and if you only have 600$, then buy the new PC and an 8800 GTS because the GTS will perform a lot better than the GTX with the Pentium 4.

Solve : Working with 3 1/2 floppies?

Answer»

Ok, I know floppies are ancient but I am trying to get some information from my floppy and I cant open it. My computer is asking me to format it, but then this would mean I would loose all information. Is there anyway to get my information off my floppy. It has been several years since I last opened this floppy. THank you Hiya
what Os a are you running ?
was the Os different now to when it was saved on the disk as thois can sometimes
cause an error but all will be ok if you put it back in the originall pc,

i.e saving something in 98 may not always be readable with Xp that is an experiance i have had but when i put it back in the original pc all was ok then i just saved it to disk

hope this helps
All the best
SimshiThank for replying, i am using the original pc but we have UPDATED the os. I have a feeling we used 98 but since have changed it. Is there any other way of getting my INFO.
the only thing i can suggest is if you live in the Uk you can go to your local library and use their computers, as most of them are running 2000 pro, you should STILL be able to retrieve data from your disk. if that does not work then you will have to locate a pc that has 98 on it, then either email it to yourself or burn to cd
hope this helps
all theb best
Simshi
All floppies formatted by any Windows or DOS system use the FAT12 file system, so trying to get your data back by putting it on the same system it was formatted on probably won't help. There are exceptions, like LITTLE utilities that LET you squeeze just a little more room out of that floppy than fat12 could. Chances are, though, that since a floppy's life expectancy averages only a few years, that your data's already been lost.

The life expectancy of a floppy is not accurate at all, just like the so-called life expectancy on a blank CD or MiniDisk or any other media for that matter. I've got 5 1/4" floppy disks from the '80s that don't hesitate to open at all. As long as you don't get them dirty and keep magnets away from them, they should not lose their data. I'd say the drive has a bigger chance of failing than the disk. The drive not being properly aligned could be causing your pc to not recognize the disk as formatted.

Solve : Hard Drive Free Space?

In the process of trying to get a handle on high cpu temp. on my computer i DOWNLOADED , installed , and ran 4 different utility programs like PC Wizard 2007 , Driver Detective , Driver SCAN and Speed Fan . My hd free space was 58 % BEFORE installing any of these programs . It now shows as 71 % . Am i missing something or has the computer fairy ARRIVED ? ...Where is your space info from ? ?
What OS ? ?

The only program in your list i'm familiar with is speedfan...

DLoad and run Sequoia View for an accurate report of your HDD space.I am running XP SP 2 . Free space figure comes from xp disk frag. as well as stand alone utility from Toni - Arts . Might mention that i shut down machine after GETTING 71% free space reading . Woke this am booted up and now have 73 % free space ? Fine for me , just curious how this could be happening . I will run Sequoia to see what reading i get and report back . Thanks for the tip..Did download and run Sequoia View .. amazing utility. It verifies all the other utility ratings in regards to free hd space.. 71 - 73% range . Maybe i just pay homage to the computer gods that be and simply be happy.. Thanks for the utility reference though . I have learned more through this forum than through any book i might read on computers.. Keep up the great work group..Sequoia is fairly accurate so i would do as you said and thank the HDD fairies for your extra space all of a sudden and move on...

Solve : Replacing USB port in Dell Latitude 600 laptop?

Answer»

Since I've STARTED to use flash drives and SD cards, I've been getting the message "This [HARDWARE] could work faster; click here for more information." When I click, WINDOWS tells me I have a USB1 port and that no faster port is available on this computer. How important is it to have a faster USB port? Where could I get one? Could I install it myself? So far I have not encountered a really slow situation involving the use of USB devices, but I'm not sure whether I should be satisfied or not. For info, this Dell has a Pentium III @ 851mhz with 256MB of RAM. Any Comments/answers?USB 2 is a lot faster than than USB 1. Especially with file transfers you should notice a significant difference. But you can't replace the USB ports in your laptop so your only option would be to a get a PCMCIA usb 2 card, like these.

This of course requires that your laptop have a pcmcia slot. I have a slot that looks like the right thing, but I use it for my wireless card when I need that. Is that the same thing? If not, I guess I don't have the right slot.Yeah that should be the same slot. This is something a Computer shop should be able to do...
Call around for pricing to see if it's worth it.I have one of those card slot USB 2.0 thingys in the picture above, and it works great. But, if you have a wireless card sticking out of either of the slots, it won't fit. What's the cost of one of those USB2 things that works in a slot? Where's the best place to get one? I don't use my wireless card much, so that would be a good alternative for me if it's not too expensive.I GOT mine for pretty cheap, though I don't quite remeber how much. Go to www.pricewatch.com, and do a search for USB 2.0 PCMCIA.Here Ya Go...THANKS to both Compguy and Patio for the info. I now know I can afford the PCMCIA USB 2.0 device and where to get it. I'm a happy camper.

Solve : monitor goes tinted white?

Answer»

ok, so i was recording VIDEOS for my collection on youtube and all of a sudden my monitor fades to a tinted white COLOR. It is not fully white because i still see everything except that i can't make out any words. Everything is so blurry. I tried taking the monitor cable out and inserting it back in, but that didn't help at all. What has happened and is the best thing for me to do? First of all, did you try RESTARTING your computer?
What OS do you have?
Have you made any changes recently?
What happens if you boot into Safe Mode? Is everything still white?

And most importantly...did you try your monitor on a different computer, and did you try a different monitor on your current computer?i have tried restarting the computer and still the same outcome. My os is windows xp sp2 and i have not made any recent changes before this happened. I can't try a different monitor since i only have one. When going into safe mode it is still tinted white. If it's a CRT (tube) monitor (fat at the back, not flat panel) try looking on the monitor SETTINGS for "degauss". yeah, i tried that degauss thing but it didn't do the trick. Can you borrow a monitor to try as a test and try your monitor on a different computer too.
That cuts the problem in ½ immediately.hmmm, i don't really KNOW anybody who'd lend me one...if i attempt to find someone..it'll be a while till i could get my hands on one. Well, if you can get ahold of another monitor, it'll help rule out a lot of things. Otherwise, we'll just be taking shots in the dark here. And I'm willing to bet that your monitor (and not your computer) is probably the problem.well i'll try my best on finding a monitor for the test

Solve : SATA Hardrives?

Answer»

I have a computer that has two SATA Hardrives. One reads as master but i can't GET the other one to be reconized as a slave. I tried working in the BIOS and setup menus but to no avail. Any suggestions? SATA drives don't have Master and Slave designations, as only one device can be on each channel. As opposed to IDE/ATA, where you can have two and they require separation. What is it you are trying to do ? ?On your MOBO where the connection for your sata is it will say sata 1 and sata 2
sata 1 is your master and will boot from there if there is an os to boot, if there is not one there then it will move to sata 2 and check if there is an os there, effectivley sata 1 is your master (but it is not called that any more)
Simshi
I have one plugged into SATA 1, that one is being read as the master. The other SATA drive is in SATA 2. I only have those two SATA connections on the motherboard. The system boots to windows through the master, but i can't get the other one to be reconized at all. I tried the BIOS and setup menus but i can't get the second drive to be detected. If it's a new drive the SATA drivers need to be loaded and the drive needs to be formatted before Windows will recognise it...

Solve : Laptop hard drive to usb hard drive?

Answer»

I had a laptop that had a hardware malfunction. The hard drive is operational, and I can start up a DESKTOP off of it. What I want to do though is hook it up through USB using a sata to USB cable adapter, which I have, and then transfer/copy/clone it to a usb hard drive. I want to do this through the desktop while it's running. This seems feasible to me, but I want to know how I can get the exact copy of the laptop hard drive over to the usb drive. I want to do this because I was told that the hard drive may very well be wiped when it is sent in for repair. I haven't had to do this before so I was wondering the BEST way to do it this way. I realize I COULD PROBABLY start the computer off the laptop drive and clone it during set up, but I was wondering if the possibility of COPYING it to a usb drive wouldn't be simpler. Any help is appreciated. What OS is on the laptop drive ? ?
Why do you need it cloned to a USB drive ? ?
What program are you planning on using to clone the drive? ?I'm working with Windows XP. I wanted to clone the drive to a USB drive because when I send the laptop in to get repaired they say they might clear it. I want to do it to a USB drive in particular because there isn't enough room to just copy it to the desktop hard drive. I hadn't actually chosen a program to use, I'm open to suggestions. If I have to do it off the boot, I might just boot it and make sure I have all the files I want to save, as I don't necessarily need an exact copy of what I have now, just the files really, but if it's possible to do it just through the USB I'm interested in knowing how.XP is not able to boot from external drives by design...not without alot of headaches.
I'd get a 40 or 80G IDE drive for the desktop in this case...

Solve : New Computer Fans rev up?

Answer»

I was WONDERING, do all new computers rev up really fast when they first boot up? When I PRESS the power button I believe it's the power supply fan or some other fan that really revs up for about 5-10 seconds and then goes to a slower speed. I've SET up some new computers at work too and they rev up for 5-10 seconds and then slow down again. What is the purpose of this? Is there a way to stop it from doing this or is this just how new computers are set up? (By new I mean 1 year old or less.)I wouldn't be ABLE to say if all newer computers do this, but yes I've noticed this too. My theory is that when you power up the computer the fan is getting full power, and therefore runs at max speed. Then the BIOS takes over and regulates it down to a more suitable level. The reason it is so noticeable on newer computers is because fans don't run at as many RPMs as they did a few years back.
But this is just my theory... take it or leave it.

Solve : Printer bending paper?

Answer»

My printer (HP Deskjet 2940) has BEGUN bending paper in the upper left corner about one inch from the left edge of the printed document.

I have looked for paper residual which could be CAUSING it and have not found anything.

The MARKING of the paper is not very significant HOWEVER, at times it causes one side of the paper to be knocked crooked. Obviously when this happens, the printed line is not level.

Is there an ajustment that I can make which is fairly simple to accomplish?

Solve : Is my CPU fried??

Answer»

I was PUTTING together a computer out of some spare parts today, and when I finally finished hooking everything together, I turned it on, and nothing. All the fans start spinning, but that's it. No beeps, no video, CPU (AMD XP 1700+) doesn't GET warm after 10-15 minutes, hard drive doesn't spin up, nothing. The light underneath the HD lights up as it should, video card fan spins, etc.

I tried running it barebones.. just mobo, cpu/heatsink/fan, ram, keyboard.. still no beeps.

As a last resort, I thought hey.. maybe I need to reseat the CPU. When I pulled it up, there were 10 little very light brown (or off-white) markings on the thermal paste. Those markings were from the 10 little chips on the CPU as pictured below (not sure what they are called):

And this is sort of what the thermal paste looked like (notice the darker markings):

I don't know what would have caused it to fry.. that's why I'm a little CONFUSED. The cpu/mobo were working just fine for a long time. About 6 months ago, I ordered new parts and stored the old ONES away in the closet (still connected). All I did today was reconnected them to a different case. All of the parts I used today are the same as were in use together 6 months ago.

Is there anything else that would cause the computer do this?

Any ideas?
ThanksWhat kinda beeps are you getting ?

sounds to me like your mobo has gone
because if the cpu had gone it would not even power up
SimshiFirstly, try swapping the PSU with a known working one to rule out the PSU.

Does the system reset after a while or does it just hang, doing nothing? To answer both of your questions:

@simshi003052
- Like I said above, I'm getting no beeps whatsoever.

@GX44
- I have already tested 2 PSUs, same deal.
- The system does not reset. I left it on 10-15 mins to see if the CPU would warm up and it did nothing at all other than run the fans. As a matter of fact, the reset button didn't even work when I pushed it.. but that could be a problem with the case.. it's old, and was given to me.

Another note, I have also tried other memory. Are you getting a screen at all .............. im not talking about messages ........ are you getting any boot of the sort......... this may be 2 things your mobo and your cpu........

Something has almost 100% messed up(are there any beeps) sorry did not read the message properly
been up all night

if you have trie dtwo other cpu's and it still does not boot up then it is definetly your mobo
you should be able to pick a used board up for a 10 bob note
from your local dealer

Simshi
Pull those components from the case...hook up only the CPU and fan; PSU; VID card; 1 stick of RAM; monitor mouse and keyboard....see if you get any beeps.
If not re-seat the CPU and heatsink and try again.

Keep us posted.

Solve : Loading OS into laptop drive?

Answer»

I have an old Dell Xpi laptop that accidentally WIPED the hard drive (2.1 gig )I got an IDE adapter but no info on how to hook up to a desktop so I can reinstall Windows 95. Would appreciate any help I can get also I don't speak DOS so try to keep it simple.Do you have a Windows 95 CD? Does the laptop have a CD drive? It should look something like this:

Connect it to the drive first...then to the middle connector of the ribbon cable your hard drive is connected to. Make sure your desktop hard drive is jumpered to "master w/slave present/ Then hook up the 4 pin Mollex power cable.

When you reboot you should be able to SEE the laptop drive in Windows EXPLORER...

Then power down. Unhook the ribbon cable from your internal hard drive and connect the laptop to the end connection of the ribbon cable you just removed from your desktop hard drive.
Re-boot with the Win95 CD in and install the OS.
There may be some hiccups when you place it in the laptop as Win95 will install generic system drivers for the desktop devices...which won't be the same as the laptop but this is normal...
Just be READY with your laptop MBoard driver disks when you start the laptop for the first TIME...

Solve : cd-dvd rom?

Answer»

hi every one
I have thinkpad R30 with ultrabay cd-dvd and running win xp pro, now every time i start the laptop it goes into the bio's only with error message 0202 IDE secondary channel MASTER drive error but if I take the drive out window start normally? any SUGGESTION and how 2 .....please and thank youThe drive is not seated properly...remove all power and the battery and carefully inspect inside the drive bay with a FLASHLIGHT for any obstructions.
You can blow it out with compressed air to clean it.
DO NOT insert any sharp or metal objects in there.
Next inspect the slots on the drive itself and gently clean the contacts. QTips and rubbing alcohol are good for this.
Re-assemble everything and see if the error goes away...if not it is an internal wiring problem and needs to see the computer shop.

Has this unit been DROPPED recently ? ?
