Solve : Problem with 'ghosting' on my new monitor.?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently bought a 20" Viewsonic VX2020vm widescreen LCD monitor, and I have it hooked up to my Dell Inspiron 6100 laptop as a secondary display.

Just lately, it SEEMS to be ghosting or blurry, but not all the time.

The monitor has an 8ms response time, and I have it at it's maximum resolution of 1680x1050

Does anyone have any idea as to what might be causing this?

Thanks

*edit* I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but it is also doing this strange thing where the screen seems to pulse or waver when I click something with the mouse... the picture doesn't distort, but it's like a ripple goes up the screen. Idoes it with my wireless mouse and with the click BUTTON on the laptop... it seems e4specially noticeable in Photoshop, but it is happening slightly EVEN now.Tru that monitor on another computer and another monitor on this computer to see where the probem really is. It's a bit complicated, because we don't know anyone here.

The picture on my laptop monitor is perfect though, and I've never had any problems with it.you could put the LCD onto the Laptop and see if you have any problems showing that image through the LCD. It is little known and but also not unexpected, that LCD screens have a ghosting or burning on an image problem if its is left on the screen for a length of time, until improvements are brought out it would be better to use a screen saver.
this was a problem with standard monitors way back but was resolved with time, I only hope that they get this resolved soon as well. Thanks for the responses... it's not burn in, because the ghosting is around whatever characters are present on screen, and I'm not sure what you mean by put the LCD onto the laptop, as that is exactly how it is setup.

I think I will be returning it under the WARRANTY.

Solve : Laptop and Graphics card?

Answer»

Hello, I need some advice from you guys.

Am getting a new laptop and was wondering if these specifications are good for a university student who is also into a bit of computer gaming. The main thing I wanted to know from you guys is if the graphics card is good ENOUGH? It says dynamic graphics this is what is also confusing me. Am not PLANNING on buying another laptop for a long time so I was also wondering the specifications is good enough to last time for a few years.

Also should i upgrade to windows vista or remain on windows xp?

What kind of budget are you WORKING with? It's not a bad machine, but if you're going to have it for a couple of years, you want to get the best that you can possibly afford.Hey man thanks for the quick reply.

My budget is £650 and that computer is exactly £650. When I mean am not gona buy one for some time i mean 1-4 years.

So what do you think of the graphics card?

ThanksWhat games do you play?
Check the GPU FAQ, it still applies to mobile GPUs like that one, although the mobile versions are slightly slower than their desktop equivalents.
Other than the graphics card, it's a fantastic buy, especially for that price.I play games like far cry, half life 2, and most importantly microsoft flight simulator X.

Yea it seems like a good laptop but am just worried about the graphics card..

I checked the GPU Faq and found it here From lowest to highest performance:
Nvidia GeForce 6200
ATI Radeon X300
Nvidia GeForce 7200
Nvidia GeForce 7300
ATI Radeon X1300

But am not sure if thats mine still. I don't see anything about dynamic graphics. So should I take it? I don't want a graphics card that can't play some of the latest games.
That is your card, but the desktop version.
The dynamic graphics may be another way of saying that the card is actually the GeForce Go7300TC, or it may not.
It's a low performance card really, you won't be able to play the latest games on it.
Flight Sim X needs a good graphics card, and so does Far Cry.
I think HL2 is pretty intensive too.
Anyway, that's not a gaming card, or not for modern games anyway.
Sorry.
I don't think you'll get a better laptop for the price though, gaming laptops are pretty expensive.
It'll last a few years, but not for gaming.
Does it have to be a laptop?
A desktop for that price would tackle modern games easily.I dunno, my 7600GS runs everything that I give it with grace, even maxed out! 2GB will PROBABLY boost the performance quite a bit over standard 1GB systems (like mine). You could afford to lose about 512MB to your gpu with that kind of ram.but memory is only 1 factor. the actual chipset might be a problem as the 7600 chip is much faster than the 7300 chip. with a desktop, you could get a pc that'll be amazing. I BOUGHT the tower of mine for about $525 and its a pretty nice gaming machine. I have a cheap keyboard and even cheaper speakers, but that doesn't really affect performance. also notice that it's integrated graphics that you have. That will really slow it down. How much gaming do u do and what games do u play. If i may ask, whats your budget? it'll help me find u a good deal. The 7600 class is far above the 7300 class.
A desktop would work great, but a laptop is a whole different story.Yea, I need a laptop because am a univeristy student I need something to take with me.

On my sister's laptop she has a dell inspiron 6000 which has a graphics card called the ATI Mobility Radeon X300. It's 128mb and can play far cry on the best settings. Now this new laptop that I want to get the Nvidia GeForce 7300 is 256mb but it's dynamic graphics.. So if my sister's laptop can play far cry with 128mb and reading the GPU Faq it says the x300 has lower performance. My sister's laptop can also play flight simulator 2004 on best settings.

So I am really stuck here, the laptop was supposed to be for my birthday lol but after reading your post I might have to postpone the laptop. :-/

I doubt that somehow.
BTW, if it has 256Mb, it's shared memory, so it may have 128Mb of its own memory and steal 128Mb from the system, so it's even slower.Quote

Yea am sure but it's not perfectly smooth when I play far cry. Man who thought buying a laptop would be so stressful lolThe only thing stressful is expecting a machine to do what it isn't designed for...as a general rule laptops aren't built with high end gaming in mind but for portability, battery life and general computing needs.
Gaming is always going to be at the cutting edge of the hardware that is designed for it.*agrees with patio*
Basically you will not be able to find a gaming laptop for that price.
I think that's the best laptop you will find for that price, but it is not a gaming machine unfortunately.
Sorry, but that's the way it is - if you want a gaming laptop, you will have to spend more.
If I were you I'd abandon it and get that laptop - it's a powerful machine, and it will serve you well.
It will still play games, just not the latest and greatest.

Solve : Question about upgrade?

Answer»

I currently have a 3.2 pent 4 prescott with 2 gig ram and a ATI x850 pro AGP. I want to upgrade and only have about $400 to do so. Is BUYING a new video card ... say a ATI x1950 PRO 512 a good INVESTMENT or should i invest in a new MB with pci and a lesser vid card? What do you use that PC for?
I guess it's gaming.
What games?
My opinion would be to get a new MOTHERBOARD with, say, a 7600, and then buy another 7600 for SLI when you need/want it.
If you keep that motherboard, you will be stuck with AGP - you'll need a new motherboard sooner or later, so why not now.
Just my $0.02.

Solve : Stepping on Core 2 Duo?

Answer»

Hi, ive found a E6600 Core 2 DUO chip for only $389 aus but the thing is the STEPPING is B1. as far as i know the latest stepping for the E6600 is B2. just wondered if there was any MAJOR differences between the new stepping and whether i will really notice the difference.

stepping ? I was clueless.. then I found this....

http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=627088

yeah thanks mate. stepping is like a version of the chip i guess you could say. no chip is EVER perfect and when they fix things or make small changes they bring out a new one. a step up from the other one, therefore the name it is given is stepping.

it appears the stepping b1 was the engineering chip that original tests were run from and proved not to be as good for overclocking. so the problem was solved and the version released to the public was B2. however some places on the net still sell the B1 stepping and i will be keeping away from it after reading that article and a few others.

makes you wonder what your buying without knowing it sometimes doesnt it.

Solve : Hard disk failure - possible to retrieve data??

Answer»

Labprincess, Another thought just occurred to me --perchance do you have your broken laptop and your working desktop on a network?(ethernet connection). If so have you tried to see if the working desktop can see the H/D of your broken laptop? truenorthThanks, Truenorth. As far as I can tell, the enclosure gets its power from being hooked to the laptop. One with an external power SOURCE would probably be better, but I was too impatient to order the one you linked to and wait for it to be delivered, and COMPUSA's selection kind of sucked.
Anyway, the enclosure is being recognized as new hardware when I hook it to the computer. It is recognizing it just as a USB device, but not as a disk drive with a LETTER attached. For example, my new internal hard drive is C:/ the CD/DVD drive is D:/ my external hard drive is F:/ and other devices like my digital camera and my iPod all show up in "My Computer" as drives with some letter named, but the old HDD in the enclosure doesn't. The computer doesn't seem to be recognizing it as a disk with information on it.
As for partitioning, the old HDD only had one partition, and some unpartitioned space, IIRC. It only had 30 GB of space total. As part of my previous efforts to fix this problem, I tried reinstalling XP on the computer before I removed the old HDD. It gave me an error message saying that the file system was corrupt and setup was unable to format the disk, or something like that. That might mean the disk is too far gone to recover anything, but when I have it hooked to the laptop I can hear the old HDD trying to spin up, so maybe there's still hope.
Unfortunately, I don't have a home network, just the one laptop. I was going to try and hook the broken laptop up to the network at work, or even just my desktop computer here, but couldn't because of various security protocols. Now I have a working laptop, thanks to the new drive, but can't seem to access the data on the dying/broken old drive. Frustrating. Would Norton Ghost or other recovery software be of any help here?
This is definitely one of those "character building" experiences, haha. Thanks again for the help.
Labprincess, Well what you have said tells me this-your computer is recognizing the"case"(which of course is the "USB" external device). However how it can possibly detect the contents of that case when the content is what was an internal H/D which did require power (electric) and now all it is getting to the case is the power through the USB port---Hmmmm me thinks that the power from the USB port would not replicate that which it was getting through it's internal power cable from the computer's power supply.Which is why (if i'm right) that the actual dieing harddrive may not be being recognized--as without adequate power to it to run it it is just a bunch of metal and plastic parts sitting in a case. Not having had the actual experience (which i guess by now you are getting tired of hearing) that is my best guess --unless of course it is caused by the dieing H/D actually being dead.No there is no point in buying or using Ghost at this stage as your H/D (the dieing one) would have to be in some computer where it was working in order for Ghost to be of any value. On the case you bought --pick up the phone and call the actual Compusa store that you bought it at and ask for the tech dept. and ask them if there would be SUFFICIENT power at a computer USB port to power what had been an internal H/D in a computer--if my theory is correct the answer should be no.In which case you might be more successfull with one such as the one i linked you to--meanwhile if the answer is no --put it back in the box and take it back to Compusa on your next trip over there. They will take it back. I don't know where you are but if you have access to a Fry's store they definitely will have the powered type.Don't give up on that H/D yet as it has not been proven conclusively that it is beyond use. Good luck, truenorthSilly me, the HDD enclosure came with 2 USB plugs--both of them need to be connected in order for it to work. Interestingly, the data recovery software (some free program I got from download.com) is calling the old drive @C, which is weird, but it seems to be working, albeit very slowly. I let it run all night and when I got up this morning it was still trying to find data on the old disk...so I'm crossing my fingers that this is almost over. Thanks for all the help.
[smiley=thumbsup.gif]Labprincess,You are welcome glad i could assist.Hope you do get the data you are going through all this trouble for. Please let us all know by final post if you DID retrieve it(even if only in part). You might want to concider now that you own that piece of hardware keeping an eye out for an internal H/D at a bargain price. Every now and then places like Compusa and Fry's etc put on a special where after the rebate they end up being almost free. That way not only would you have a portable H/D(as compared to off the shelf externals which are still relatively expensive) but it makes an excellent medium for back ups.I am assuming that the reason for the dual usb connections are to provide the electric current of sufficient amount to actually run the contents of the case (but as i have not---- well you know the rest) i am looking forward to going to Fry"s near Atlanta in a couple of weeks to get a couple of those thingys. I have a number of computers which for one reason or another i am no longer using but i will salvage the H/D's and put them in cases and voila i will have some more external H/D's.There is also similiar cases to convert internal optical drives to external as well --around the same price. Now if only some forum member would help me resolve my Sony Vaio problems on the software posts. truenorthGood idea about putting a HDD in the external case, Truenorth. You can never have too much extra space to back files up (something I will be doing religiously now )
I'll post the final results of my adventures in data retrieval, as it should be interesting. If the program I'm using right now doesn't work, I have trial downloads of about a dozen others. Maybe between them I'll get most of my data back, haha.

Solve : Computer Turning Itself Off?

PSU's that come with cases (Antec is the exception) are usually junk. If a brand name is not prominently on it, it is junk. If you paid less that $50 it is PROBABLY junk (unless you got a good one on sale). PSU's and cases with lot's of LED's, etc. are just junk that snare the unitiated with the "wow factor" but add nothing to the functionality.

Did you USE standoffs on the motherboard?

Woohoo!

So they guy at BestBuy didn't lie to me! (Sorry about going to BestBuy, I don't know much about PSUs).

I was looking at some cases there and he said that between the two that were there, the Antec one was more reliable and I would be ok with a 380w PSU (my Mobo says 400w min).

Anyway, just wanted to say that.

poopmonkey124, could it be a heatsink paste problem? If you got a new mobo, that might have fixed it for a while, but could the contact between your CPU and you heatsink be a bad one?

-rockTo GX1_Man - I did not install the new MB, someone else did that work, but the motherboard appears to have something behind it, perhaps some standoffs. To check do I have to remove the MB completely?

To Rockerest - I don't think its a heatsink problem ,the temp inside there is fine, but the processor seems to overheating, quite a bit too! (100 degrees c!) Don't hold me to that though, im not a computer genius.Quote

Why does that NOT sound like a heatsink problem?I have a mini thermometer display on my case. I shove this little METER into the heatsink and it GIVES me the temp. The heatsink seemed to be very low temperature. Maybe i'm CRAZY?Carefully remove that MBoard from the case...

If your processor is registering as hot through your computer, but your heatsink is registering as cool (enough) using an actual thermometer, I would say that your heatsink is definitely not touching your processor.

The point of the heatsink is to wick away heat from the processor, and it's clearly not doing that, so you may want to check the contact between the two, or have someone who's good with PC hardware do it.

-rock

edit: Do this BEFORE you melt your processor, which would totally suck. I.E., SOON!
If this isn't the problem, well, it took you 30 minutes to check it, max. If it is, you saved yourself a CPU. I bought a tube of Thermal paste for $3. It was cheap, but it's thermal paste.

Solve : Shopping for new GPU. Any preferences??

Answer»

I am currently running on a GeForce FX5500. I need a DX10 card that can run my system. Any tips? I was thinking maybe the 7950GT WOULD be a good option.

-rock

P.S.
My PSU is a 380 Watt. Should I upgrade that as well? The 7950 GT is not a DX10 card.
Check the GPU FAQ for info on graphics cards.
Depending what card you decide on, you my need a new PSU.
What's the rest of your system specs?
Edit: I see them now. Sorry. Are you sure it's a PCI? If so then you're screwed, basically.Oops, missed that.
The FX5500 was only for PCI and AGP, I doubt there was a PCI-E version.
But I also doubt that a Core 2 would be running alongside a motherboard with only PCI slots, they need a newer chipset right?
Anyway, you may need a new motherboard too, thanks for pointing that out Neil.Quote

Are you sure it's a PCI? If so then you're screwed, basically.

huh?

the FX 5500 is most certainly a PCI. I built my entire system from scratch, the P5B Mobo has one PCIe-X16 slots as well as regular PCI slots. It has no AGP slots.

the P5B is a decent mobo.

And I know the 7950GT isn't DX10, that's why I'm looking for tips on another one. I want one about that range, but with DX10.

I assume you mean PCIe, since AGP is even older than PCI. The P5B has one x16 and one x1.Quote

Edit: sorry about the double post.

After reading the GPU FAQ, it SEEMS that my only option right now would be to spring for the 8 series (not gonna happen). So I wait until hardware manufacturers start putting DX10 on all their cards.OK, I see where you're coming from now.
You have PCI-E, but the card is a PCI card.
The 8 series is the only DX10 card AVAILABLE now, and the only 8 series card is the 8800.
Soon the rest of the 8 series will be out, if I were you I'd wait until then and get an 8600, they will be good performance and fairly cheap from the looks of things.
ATI's equivalent series has been delayed, so Nvidia will be your only option for a while yet.
Wait a bit, and see what comes up.Mmk, that's kind of what I was thinking, however, I didn't know that there's more to the 8 series.

Thanks for your help.

-rockif u look at the lower end of the 8800 series it actually is pretty cost effective. im from australia so prices would obviously vary a little but i can get an 8800 320mb gigabyte card for only $465, which is only $120 dearer than a 7950GT 512 card. so if you want the quality in my opinion its definitly worth it. personally ill be purchasing one of these 320mb 8800 cards in teh next few weeks,

edit*

for these new cards your going to need an absolute minimum 400w power supply, personally im going to be running a 750W but something like a thermaltake 600w would also do the job nicely.

Solve : Hard Disk Cannot read?

Answer»

I just got a new computer, The mobo has 1 SATA and 2 IDE slot.

Following the recommendation of the shopkeeper, i bought another IDE CONTROLLER card. So i used the SATA as my primary hard disk to install OS and the original 2 IDE from the mobo as my 2 dvd-rom drive. The extra IDE controller card i used to connect my 2 old hard disks.

After install my Window XP into my new hard disk(120GB connect to SATA cable), I cannot see my 2 old hard disks in "my computer"(40GB and 13GB connect to IDE controller card using PCI from mobo).
During booting up, i can see that 2 hard disks but cannot see from my computer or access to the file inside. I TRIED to take out the card reconnect all the cable but still no use. I tried to use ARRAY and array them together but i don know whether am i doing the right thing or not.Have you checked the jumpers on each IDE drive if they are both slave or both Master they will not be SEEN, in other words one Master and one Slave on each IDE cable even on the pci card you have installed.
The Sata will be seen because of the mbr as the system drive and they do not have the jumper problem.
ok now i manage to read them but i did one very stupid thing and that is to format my old hard disk where my valuable photo were...

can anyone tell me where to download any good FREE software to recover the lost fileS??

or at least allow me to see what are those file that i can recover before i go to have a professional to fix cause having him to test also cost money and it not worth it when in the end he tell you he cant retrieve any or just those unnecessary file and cost $$....http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+data+retrieval+softwaretry this for a free tool there is one for pictures but it really all depends on how much they are damaged, unfortunately jpeg for example are a form of compressed file and due to the coding it is often difficult to recovy but if the tool is free it is worth the time. the big thing is patience dont rush to reformat or reinstall anything on the drive until you are sure you have run out of options.

Solve : Transferring JPG files to CD-R in D drive?

Answer»

I WISH to transfer jpg FILES to a CD-R disc in my D drive so that I can show the pictures on a friend's Panasonic DVD player as a slide show. After inserting a new CD-R into the drive and attempting to copy/paste the files results in Windows informing me that the DEVICE is not accessible.
Do I have to do ANYTHING with this disc? Format it or something? Why are you copying and pasting for? You have to burn these pictures onto a cd-r Why not click on the pictures you want then send to e drive that is if you have an e drive or burner. Do you understand! A cd-r is not like a floppy disk.Well Nancy_O, actually you can burn jpeg files just by copying and pasting, then clicking "Write these files to CD", only because the cd burner(I use a DVD +-R/RW multi recorder) acts as if a drive with virtual memory.

As to rockstone's QUESTION, Can you see the drive under explorer? Are you sure that you are using a cd burner(or anything capable of burning cds).I know you can but why? By doing it my way you still get the message "Write these files to CD", but why complicate things!
Anyway go for it fffreak! Good luck rockstone. Why not resize your sig so that annoying scrollbar doesn't appear ? ?Thank you both. I think I have the message. I need to get a burner. RockstoneThat would help.
You don't actually have a DVD or CD-rewriter drive then?No to the deputy. Enquiry now terminates with thanks.

I've tried this with my other hard drive which is a Maxtor D540x-4k and it works like a dream.

if anyone can help me out that WOULD FANTASTIC.. Thank you.Quote

My computer speakers have started crackling and popping like it is amplifying static. I haven't blown the speakers, because I have TRIED several DIFFERENT sets of speakers and gone through my stereo. All setups have the static. It seems to be an ISSUE with the sound card or the computer. It isn't any of my wires to the speakers, as I have gone from the sound card DIRECTLY to the speakers. Could it be static electricity from the winter being so dry? I've never experienced this in the winter before though. what can i do to diagnose and fix the problem? Thanks!

Solve : Windows freezes as soon as it works hard!?

Answer»

Hello,

Would just like to say hi to everyone here. Just joined

Ok to my problemo!

Im not great with computers but I know how to put one TOGETHER and take it apart etc.
So I built my own COMPUTER from scratch. It was going all good until one day my motherboard died. So I got a new one, and then it was running well until the computer started freezing as soon as I pushed my computer hard, for example running a game and running firefox at the same time.
I have a suspicion that the problem is my cpu because when I installed it I didnt put any of the heat grease stuff on (I wasnt aware that it was necessary at the time).

So when the computer freezes, it doesnt blue screen, it just stays at what was displayed on the monitor at the time of the crash. When i press num lock the light doesnt come on or off and the computer is totally unresponsive until i restart it.

So I am assuming that the problem is the cpu however I was wondering if anyone knew of any tests I could do to verify what the problem is. I have attached my dxdiag test results.

So I hope someone can HELP me as I cant play any games, burn dvds or anything strenuous. Thanks in advance!Thermal grease is a great idea for any CPU that doesn't use a retail boxed heatsink and fan which use a pad, etc. WHat kind of processor is this?

How are your temps throughout this? What kind of cooling? Any other pertinent details about the hardware?

What about the power supply make and wattage? What exactly happened to the old motherboard?

Free RAM test available at www.memtest8.com

Free hard drive diagnostics available from the manufacturer's website.

These 2 are just to be sure there are not other issues.

Are you overclocking any component? What about the video card details?

Everest Home can help you check temps.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlHello,

Its a 2.8ghz pentium celeron D
My temps go up pretty high, i think it might be related to the temperature because i only have one fan and thats on the cpu. I dont know exact temperatures but the fan is always going like crazy when it crashes.
MY power supply is a 500 watt. I dont know the brand but it says that the model number is SZ-500wp4
I got rid of the old motherboard because for some reason when i tried to jump start it (as I used to do) the computer was unresponsive. So i presumed something somewhere short circuted.
I did a ram test and it was 100% ok.
Not overclocking anything. Video card is a 256mb nvidia geforce 6200.
Ill post my hard drive test results soon.
Hope i answered EVERYTHING. Thanks for your reply!I was looking for my hard drive manufacturers website but i cant seem to find the brand of the hd.
It says platinum on it but there are so many google results for platinum. In device manager it is called a platinum 160g 8f7200. Can someone please direct me to the manufacturers website please?Your hard drive is from :-
http://www.micronet.com/General/prodList.asp?CatID=46&Cat=Product
have a look at the product line, I think you should stop using your computer until you get the heat sink thermal paste applied then try again, if the CPU over heats as it will without the paste to allow the fast heat transfer to the cooler.
Try running cpu-z - When you run this after either downloading or running from their website the results will tell you how your processor is performing as far as ruling that out as the problem - CPU-Z will also give you results on other components of you system such as mem, etc. - Just a thought!Or Everest Home:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlthanks for all your replies guys. Ill try the thermal paste and I will let you know if that helps or not. Ill also try cpu z and everest home to see if they can pick anything up! Thanks again! Ill KEEP you posted on how its going! We'll keep the light on. Hope all goes well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Solve : Computer shutdown problem?

Answer»

Hi all - newbie here with some recent trouble that I hope someone could offer some insight on.

My newest (homebuilt) PC is now two years old, and up to about three months ago it operated flawlessly. Never an issue. Recently, however, the computer began to shut itself down shortly after startup reaches the point of having the desktop open.

The strange aspect to this problem is that once I hit the power button to turn the computer back on, the system loads up fine and there are no problems. I can use the computer for HOURS and it gives me no problems on any level.

The shutdown does not happen, however, if I have the computer turned off for a few hours and then come back to it and turn it back on again. This only happens if I have not used the computer for longer than say 10 hours (overnight and so forth).

I guess I am just CONCERNED because while in a way I can deal with this problem (even though it's very annoying) I'm also WORRIED about it potentially getting worse.

For those of you who want to know, I went in and checked to see if the computer is overheating and everything appears to be completely normal. That was the first thing that came to mind but that doesn't seem to be the source of the problem. I don't know if this relates at all to the hard drive being bad, or the memory or cpu being bad, but any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! My guess would be a power supply getting ready to go South for the Winter...

When you replace it don't buy a cheap one.Quote

Thanks Patio. Is there any way for me to test whether or not the power supply is going bad?Yes. The easiest way is to borrow a known good one from a FRIEND and swap it into your machine. Make sure all power is disconnected and use static precautions...
If your symptoms improve then it is the PSU at fault....^ Is there another way? I'm not sure if it can tell me anything, but I can pull up all of the voltage DATA from the Abit EQ.

I have 2 hard drives in my system. Everything worked fine for along time then one day after a reboot the 2nd drive is missing in MY Computer. Checked DEVICE manager and it is INSTALLED and enabled. Checked system settings and there was no drive letter assigned. After assigning a letter, rebooted and the same problem. The only way to get it working is to reboot, uninstall drive and reinstall it. Then it works untill the next reboot. Any help please. (jumper settings are correct)
Also ran hard DISK diagnostic tools with no problems found.

Is the drive set to auto detect, manually added or off?the drive is in listed in BIOS as well as device manager. There is no OS on second drive. Thanks for the responses/ It worked well for wuite some time then wuit, so not an install errot. Suspecting registry type error but not sure.

Solve : Usb ports not working. Need help?

Yup that is the board. Well if there really is no other solution, i guess i can buy the card.

Thanks for your help soybean.Quote

Here is a side note i have noticed, when i plug my Mouse in the USB it recieves no power what so ever, but when i put my mouse into the converter so it can go into the OLD type mouse plug, it works fine.
Here you are converting USB to PS/2 which is a different sub-system.

If you have the time (and patience) perhaps an RMA from ECS would be in order.
You would probably have to sit through their troubleshooting spiel and let them do their diagnosis.

I have been pleasantly suprised at how good that process can be, even as a second-owner in a couple of cases.

Good luck and let US know how it goes.

jflan, I think you make a good point about trying the RMA route. dweller02, even though you purchased it on ebay, if you can PROVIDE some proof of purchase, I think this may be worth pursuing.

What would proof of purchase of my pc have to do with the addition of a usb card.
I mean it was newly built so i bought it, as i did with my previous pc, which i had no problems with exect when i acciedently burned the front usb port(purely by accident) . SO i thought why not buy another custom build pc from ebay and so i did.Have not had a sigle problem until this usb issue really, with it.

BTW what is RMA? :-? :-? (newb <--)I believe they are referring to Return Merchandise Authorization.Quote

Correct.

Quote

Nothing. But, it would be necessary for Return Merchandise Authorization. Actuallly, I was thinking perhaps you bought the motherboard separately and assembled your own computer. But, since you bought a complete PC, I'm not sure how that would affect the RMA on a separate component. In that case, I believe you would need to seek RMA from the seller of the computer, not ECS. And, if you have to PAY shipping to send the computer to them, that's not very appealing, is it? On the other hand, if they would send you a motherboard and you could install it or have someone install it, then maybe it's more appealing.

Solve : Help Overclocking?

Answer»

I would like to overclock my cpu and need some assistance. I have an ABIT AV8 VIA K8T800Pro Socket 939 Motherboard - AGP8X, ATI X1600 pro 512 mb vid card, win xp, 550 watt power supply, 2.5 gb ddr 400 3200 Ram, & AMD FX 64 3500.
That CPU does not exist.
Is it an Athlon FX, or an Athlon 64 3500+?
Or something completely different?
Have you done overclocking before?
Why do you want to do it?
It's a dangerous thing when not done with care. You should first google for some basic information about overclocking and check out some overclocking sites. We have no idea exactly what you know. What is not fast enough with that processor that you want to overclock it? What type of cooling are you using, etc.Overclocking might be good for that setup...that way 3 weeks later you can go out and get an even faster processor since you'll probably need one. It's a Athlon 64 3500+...sorry
I would like to learn how to overclock for gaming purposes....my cpu heatsink/fan (it has copper tubes on both sides) is from AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ socket 939.
I can look up the model when I get home.
How do I get started? Here are 1,430,000 starting points. Read through the first fifty or so to get a grasp of the basics. If you don't understand what you are doing, why, and what can happen with your actions you will just ruin equipment.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+overclockPersonally, I'm afraid to OC. I spent good money on my CPU, and I don't feel like melting it.

Just run out and get the Athlon 64 X2 4400+. That way:

a) your cooling unit will match (yay!)
b) you'll be running a dual core 2.2Ghz system.

And in my opinion, gaming doesn't usually stress out your CPU so much (especially not a 2.2Ghz, yet). Unless you're playing incredibly new games with ultimate graphics, your CPU should be fine. It's your GPU and RAM you should be upgrading (what are they, BTW?).

Anyway, here's a basic guide to OCing:

http://www.basichardware.com/how_to_overclock.html

Be warned, it's dangerous.

Please take not of that, and what others have said.
It can be dangerous, so if you really want to do it then be careful and take it slowly.
I also agree with rockerest, the CPU isn't so important in games unless it is the limiting factor. And what is the only thing that matters?OK, I'll bite.

You have a decent processor and a ton of RAM.
Your video card is mainstream, mid-shelf, etc.

Instead of reading an OC tutorial while you simultaneously torch your RIG, think about upgrading your video card.

Here's a comparison chart that will illustrate where your card is, in the PECKING order.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/131Thanks for the info everyone. It LOOKS like I will buy a new Graphics card. I have one problem, I need a new mobo so I can go PCI express...lol.
It's NEVER free. There is still some very powerful AGP cards still being made so you really dont need to buy a whole new mobo.
have a look and see- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Sort=1&Nav=|c:318|&Recs=30Quote
And what is the only thing that matters?
The GPU of course.
LOL not - don't get me started on that again.
The CPU is just less important in most cases than the GPU and RAM, amongst other components.

As stones said, there are still powerful cards for AGP.
PCI-E is more future proof though.
Your graphics card is the limiting factor here, so that's the thing to upgrade for better performance.

Mobo: ASUS P5PE-VM LGA 775 Intel 865G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Celeron D 331 Prescott 2.66GHz 256KB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) (VS512MB400)
HDD: WD400 40 GB ATA
DVD: LITE-ON Beige 16X DVD-ROM 52X CD-R 32X CD-RW 52X CD-ROM 2MB Cache ATAPI / E-IDE Combo Drive
PSU: Rosewill RV300 ATX 300W Power Supply 115/230 V CE, cUL, CSA, CB, TUV, FCC, NEMKO, DEMKO, SEMKO, TC

Some folks on another board are dogging my PSU selection.

Does anyone here know much about Rosewill PSU's?

PKYou don't need anything too powerful then.
I'm not sure about any of those PSUs, not HEARD of any of those brands.
The PSU is an important part of any PC, saving a little by BUYING a cheap PSU now could lead to you needing a much more expensive replacement PC.
Hopefully someone else who knows a little more about power supplies can advise on some good ones here.
It doesn't help that I'm not in the US so I don't know pricing and brands over there.
But the rest if your build looks fine to me.
Be aware, however, that the motherboard has limited upgrade potential, which may not be a problem. After speaking to Asus tech support, I have determined that the mobo needs:
+3.3v/28a
+5v/30a
+12v/18-20a

The PSU that I have does not meet the 18a on the +12v. Nor do two of the three I posted above.

The only one that does is the CoolMax. The price is in my range. Is this an OK brand?

Solve : PC Crash Problem?

Answer»

Alright, so my PC stoped working over the course of the night. It seems to work fine except for two things:
- When I connect it to the monitor it SHOWS nothing. The monitor even still has the orange stand-by light, as if its not recieving any input from the computer at all.
- The PC crashes 30 seconds after I power it up, and I can only power it up by taking out, and then INSERTING back in the power cable (when i click on the power button while the cable is INSERTED it does nothing). I believe the crash happens faster when the monitor is plugged in.

The PC was working more than fine up until this started happening. I was on it yesterday, computing in full swing.

Now, my theory is that the PSU is the problem, because nothing else can make all of the components crash and stop all of the fans. The thing about that is, that Ive never experienced a problem of this sort.

It seems as if the PSU is just old and is not working well anymore. As in, nothing has changed but it still dosent work. This would also explain the fact that the there is no output to the monitor, because the PSU cannot deliver enough power to the graphics card, and when i plug the monitor cable in, it tries to power the graphics card and fails and thats why it crashes faster. It seems that the only things that are working are the 2 fans I have inside my case, but i cant tell if thats the case.

So does that make any sense that the PSU BECOMES un-able to power my PC and loses all of it's wattage without any kind of change? Once my PSU died when the fan stopped working, wich made sense and i was able to FIX it. But right now, the PC just crashes right when i turn it on.

PC Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 @2.4Ghz
nVidia Geforce MX 440
256MB DDR-400 @ 333Mhz
No-name 400w PSU

Thank You!Don't buy a no name one this time...other than that carry on.Im sorry, does that mean you agree with my theory?Sure.

But that dodgy PSU could have taken the vid card with it as well.

You can try another monitor and/or install the vid card in another machine to diagnose further.Well no, I can't since the PSU is dead.Quote

THANKS
chrisWhat do you mean by "but i can't get anywhere"?

Do you mean you do not see the My Documents folder on the slave drive or you receive an Access Denied error when you try to open the My Documents folder? or you just don't know where the My Documents folder is located on the slave drive?Try Thishey,

thanks "patio" i'll give that a try tonight hopefully. and to "pcdoc4christ" i get the access denied but what is FUNNY also in the properties of the disk it has 8G used but when i hover over the My Documents icon i get empty folder message for which i know is BS.

...i get the access denied but what is funny also in the properties of the disk it has 8G used but when i hover over the My Documents icon i get empty folder message for which i know is BS. ...

I was afraid of that. If you were using Windows XP Home you chose the option to make your files PRIVATE, which means you will no longer be able to access them. If you were using Windows XP Professional, you chose the option to encrypt your My Documents folder.

Without the original motherboard, there is little you can do. It's a security feature in Windows to prevent people who steal your computer from getting to your files. You might try buying a used motherboard of exactly the same make and model from eBay or some place and see if you can get to Windows when you connect the hard drive to that motherboard.

Please helpSince we are dealing with a total of 3 HDD's you will have to provide much more relevant info as to how they are setup and jumpered and what OS you are running at this point to get any relevant answers to your current dilemna....alright sorry, im running Windows XP, the new drive is an Athlon 64 3500 2.19 GHz with 1.37 GB of Ram, my old one is a Pentium 4. Basically my friend took the harddrives from my old box and put them in his box, beefed up the ram and such. The new drive is the C drive and the old drive is the G drive. An Athlon 64 and a Pentium4 are CPU's...you are having trouble accessing your hard drives...determine what they are and post back with the info.

P.S. Your friend did you no favor by doing this as since WinXP you cannot successfully pull a HDD out of one machine and plug it up in a different machine and expect it to work...actually normally havoc ensues at this critical point.SATA Hard Drive (Serial ATA) 10,000 RPM 74 GB Raptor is the new one, the old one Western Digital 200 GB HP Pavilion a1130n is the box. The 3rd HDD which I can access is a Seagate Barracuda 250 GBOK so we know the Raptor is the new one which according to your first post can access the other one through the new one but not the main one and we still don't know which one has the Windows OS on it....

Are you getting my point here ? ?alright, the Raptor has Windows XP Media edition, the old one had XP Home edition. I can access the Seagate slave with all my music on it from the Raptor, the old one is recognized and when i go into program files everything is there, but access is denied. Did a search on every drive for my movie list on my old one, not there at allTry This...thank you, it sounds good if my computer would go into safe mode, but it keeps popping up with that message. Plus I went into my old drive I cant even find the files I want. When he did it the first time, the raptor was installed with a stripped down version of windows XP media edition. I went into STARTUP and I could access my old HDD. He took it and installed the full Media edition. Now I cant even access the old HDD.Quote

I am not aware that Microsoft EVER made a stripped down version of Media Center Edition.
How long has your friend been working on computers ? ?
Did this machine come with Media Center installed ? ?

Solve : More soundcard issues, oy vey!?

Answer»

As some of you have read in this post, my computer's sound card has been FAILING since about August. However, I could at least hear things when my headphones were ADJUSTED the correct way in the port, and I am WORKING on getting a new sound card soon.

However, new problems have arisen.

Today, no noise comes through, at all. Yes, I have checked the obvious things such as volume and to see if my headphones are in the correct spot. I don't know what the problem is! The only noises that come through are dull buzzing sounds, and not my music. And it really sucks not having my music. =/

Any insight? Thanks! Why not buy a PCI sound card for $20 and be done with the problem totally?
I would if I had the money, but I am CURRENTLY dirt broke.Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition

Solve : how to update BIOS??

Answer»

PLS TEACH ME ON HOW TO UPDATE BOIS PLSSSS.....The first question you should answer is why you want to do this. Improperly doing this can create a ruined motherboard.

An idea of the motherboard would be helpful as well. And here's what can happen...the other thing is you are not telling us anything about the COMPUTER what is in it? what motherboard?, who made the computer. They are all different we can not help you without some info please.Well I don't recommend you for upgrading the bios. It should be the last resort when everything else fails besides it's the programs running in the OS is what makes your CPU a good CPU via program updates just KEEP the programs in their newest versions or update it to the latest patches and your CPU is as good as can be. Well if you still want too, pray that you do it properly as a wrong update = DEAD MOTHERBOARD, well I don't think if a wrong update has happened it has a fix or you can revert back. Every MotherBoard manufacturer has in their sites the bios to update their RESPECTIVE products try to go to your sites MotherBoard manufacturer and follow carefully the intructions... You've been warned... Think carefully. Good Luck. :-? :-/If you want to update the BIOS to make the PC compatible with Windows Vista, make SURE the rest of the hardware (such as the video card and RAM memory) can take what Vista can dish out, too.

Solve : Can't boot from CD?

Answer»

I used DBAN to wipe the HD clean on an old Dell Dimension C700CXE that I just upgraded to a 1.0 ghz Celeron and flashed the BIOS to the latest revision. I put the XP (upgrade) CD in to reinstall, but it will not boot to it. I have changed the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD ROM is #1. I am pretty sure that this is how I installed XP in the first place (previous BIOS), though I think I just booted to a Win98 disk and formatted, rather than use a cleaning UTILITY. Why can't I boot to a CD?

I tried booting to a Win98 floppy, and then running Setup from the XP CD, but that did not work.

I also tried a Linux CD too, and it did not work either.

I also recently removed a ZIP drive. So the three variables are DBAN, BIOS update, and removal of ZIP drive.

I made sure that the drives were plugged in correctly. The HDD was set as master and connected to the master primary, the CDRW was set as master and connected to the master secondary. This looked good.

However, during my investigation, I discovered that the HDD was jumpered wierd. Like it was supposed to be the default setting, but was on the wrong row. It has been like this for over two years with no apparent issues. I went ahead and moved the jumper to the master position.

After this, I was for some reason able to boot to a couple of CD's (Linux, Ultimate Boot CD), but NOT the WinXP CD.

To elimate the CD, I tried another WinXP CD, with the same result.

I tried the XP CD in a Compaq system with a DVD drive installed. XP booted.

I then removed the CDRW from the Dell, and replaced it with the DVD drive. Everything booted fine.

Then I tried the CDRW in the Compaq. The XP CD booted.

Soooooo......conflict with the Dell L Series A14 BIOS and this AOpen CDRW?

PK
It makes no sense that 2 different XP CD's will not boot....are these copies or originals ? ?Originals.....both UPGRADES. They DO boot, and HAVE booted, just not now on the AOpen CDRW in the L series with the A14 BIOS.

pkWierd...all i can venture is you just had a BIOS flash gone bad. Other than trying another DVD/CD unit in there i am officially out of ideas...Uhh....i DID try another CD drive in the system. And it booted fine.

pkThen there's your solution...Yeah, thats what I was wondering....

BUT, i changed the boot order to floppy, cd, hdd, and now it boots the XP CD on the AOpen drive.

I am still a little leery about GOING forward with this drive. Or could the BIOS be bad?

I did notice that during all of this, the "quick boot" turned itself BACK on, after I had set it to disabled. Should I reflash?

PKfloppy CD and HDD should be the order to leave it set at...flashing the BIOS has PRODUCED many doorstops in it's time.
I wouldn't.When I flashed the BIOS to upgrade the processor, would that have reset to defaults?

Perhaps this has all happened due to messed up boot order?

Solve : Two 7600 (SLI) vs One 8800?

Answer»

I'm assembling my new PC (Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe with AMD Athlon 64 AM2 4600). The system has great POTENTIAL for upgrades in the future. My question is: I would like to install a single Nvidia 7600 series card for now and then match it with a second card in an SLI configuration. How will two 7600 card stack up with one 8800?Since I am not the huge gamer enthusiasts, I am going to do the same thing soon, (2) 7600gt's......BUT;

Calum < he can give you a good BREAKDOWN, I'm sure.....
he'll find this post soon............Hee hee, I'm here now.
I guess I sort of replaced Track then . . .
Two 7600s will give you great performance, but they will not support the new technologies such as DX10 that the 8 series do.
Have a look at the GPU FAQ and I'll see what I can find about 2x7600s vs an 8800.
Edit: The 8800GTX beats the 7600GT in SLI.
The 7600 was a high-performance version too.
Does that go some way towards answering your question? The 8800s cost a bit more money than the 7600s of course. I'm just looking for an interim but just like "death" and "taxes", DX10 is a-coming. Since there is no time completion of my new rig, I guess the prudent thing to do is wait until I can afford to buy an 8800.

Basic components as follows:

Antec Sonata II 450W PSU
Asus [emailprotected] DeLuxe
AMD Athlon 64 AM2 4600
1 Gig DDR2 800 (PC6400)
WD Raptor 10K RPM, 74G SATA HD
Video? Up for discussionQuote

I'm sure something newer and "better" will be along soon as well.
or you could also wait a little while for the other versions of the 8000 series to COME out. by the time you buy two 7600s the price wouldnt differ much from one 8800 ANYWAY, and the 8800 will definitly smoke the 7600 even in sli. plus no matter how good the 7600s are they wont run the new release games. my advice is save your $ and see what comes out in the near future.i owuld much do the same i am also a gamer and i would save my cash and wait for more 8800's

Solve : New Motherboard will not start!?

Answer»

I recently installed a new PcChips P23G Motherboard w/Celeron D 356 3.33ghz processor, 1gb DDR533 PC2-4200 ram and Antec 480 watt ATX12V v2.0 power supply. I believe I have every thing installed and connected properly. When I turn on the power supply switch the leds on the keyboard flash once, next when I press the power button on front of the computer nothing happens, I have checked the jumper settings and the panel connnections,. still nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, George :-?Do you have the auxiliary power supply hooked up to the motherboard? It is a 4-pin connector.I have the 20 pin and the 4 pin connectedAre you sure everything is jumpered correctly? Also try taking all peripherals off(i.e. harddrive, all cd/dvd drives, sound card, any modems, any NICs, and floppy drives), just leave the graphic card seated. Reseat your RAM. Reset your CMOS. Then try to boot up.Yes, I did everything you suggested, still nothing. I did notice that there is a white wire on the old power supply 20 pin connector and that on the new power supply there is nothing in that position on the 20 pin connector.Your new power supply is 20-pin, if I'm not mistaken, I believe you may need a new 24-pin. Is there not ANOTHER 4-pin connector on the power supply that hooks up to the 20-pin. Read the manual of your PSU.Yes I have the 20 pin and the 4 pin connected.Okay, does your motherboard have a 24-pin receptor. For my computer to even boot up, I needed the 24-pin connector + the 4-pin auxillary power connector, to be connected. So in total, there were 28 pins. No, there is a 20 pin below the cpu and a 4 pin just to the left of the cpu. The new power supply came with a split 24 pin ( the extra 4 pin can be removed) this extra 4 pin does not fit the 4 pin receptor but there is also another 4 pin with 2 black and 2 yellow/black wires that fits the 4 pin receptor.Try another monitor. Are you sure your CMOS jumper is in the CORRECT place? The monitor works on another pc I have, the power and cpu fans are not starting and the startup beeps are not OCCURING. Yes I have reset ths CMOS and the jumper is currently across pins 1&2.
Well if the CMOS jumper is in the WRONG place, the power nor the fans will start.Yes I understand this, the jumper is across 1&2, according to the user manual. The only thing I can think of now, is maybe the power switch button is not properly connected to the motherboard. If it is, sorry I can't help you any further. Sorry I wasn't much of a help.Yes I think the MB is defective, Thanks Anyway.

Solve : Need Urgent Help?

Answer»

Ok, so yesterday I did about the dumbest thing I could think of..

I incorrectly identified my motherboard as a Asus, and downloaded USB drivers for it, and of course I installed them.. The problem is now, nothing that runs off USB works.. (Mouse, etc. Thank god the Keyboard is a PS/2)

Anyway, I removed EVERYTHING that had to do with USB in the Device Manager, and upon restart Windows picks up the ports, and installs whatever software it finds.. The problem is, they still don't work. I'm so confused, and UTTERLY HEARTBROKEN, because I have no idea how to rectify this issue..

The computer is a Compaq Presario, which makes it even worse, because I never got any CDs with the computer at all (Not one) so I'm basically lost.

Any help, believe me, WOULD be greatly helpful..What is your motherboard's actual model? Try to find the drivers for it online.you might be able to find out the actual mobo online, go to compaq .com or somethign and download the drivers... why did you need new drivers for it anyway?I "somehow" got it working.. If you asked me how, I'd have a complete :-? look on my FACE. No idea, completely stumped, but over-joyed that it's working.

I needed updated drivers (So I thought) because I have this MP3 Player (It's a Sony Walkman NW-E00F) and the computer wouldn't pick it up

Anyway, now I'm on a different computer, and I'm having the same issue with the stupid thing.. The computer picks it up, and if I plug anything else into the usb slots (Mouse, Keyboard, JOYSTICK, etc.) it "unmounts" or basically forgets that it just picked up the MP3 Player..

Now I can't transfer music onto the *censored* thing.. Sigh. No luck at all. My iPod had the same issue on the other computer (Wasn't being picked up at all), but that ended up working just fine.

Oh well.

Solve : ecc registered memory compatability?

i hav a Abit KR7A - 133R VIA KT266A Socket A DDR motherboard i know it surports PC2100 DDR memory but need to know will it WORK with 256mb PC2100 DDR CL2 ECC Registered RAM. THANKS really need reply soon please anyone. (if want to ask my anyother problems just ask as am Comp TIA A+ certifed but DONT know answer to this lol)

Thanks jasonGo to Crucial's site to see what memory is compatible.
I doubt that ECC RAM will be compatible though, it is used in server machines and not in normal PCs.
Hope this helps.
And can a mod move this please?
Thanks.
PS Welcome to the forums.been to crucals site no real help there. why would it not work? would i hav to modify the bios. e.g. ENABLE anything or disable. been busy over clocking today. o would u know which is the fsb feature is it just the dram clock. i think im correct. if not itll be either the cpu host or cpu vcore. cheers jasonUse Crucial's memory advisor tool.
If it does not show ECC memory as compatible, it is not compatible.
Why do you want to use it anyway? From what I understand it is more expensive than normal RAM.
I don't think modifying the BIOS would help.

Solve : Incorrect CPU speed?

Answer»

Hi. I have just had installed an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ onto an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard by a reputable computer shop. In System PROPERTIES the CPU is showing as 1.09 Ghz. instead of 2.2 Ghz. Can any of you gurus help me with this. I bought these two items om Ebay. Thanks.

JohnThis can be caused by CPU stepping speeds to conserve power.
It should still perform fine.
Go to Control Panel --> Power Options, and set the power scheme to always on, this should force the CPU to run at full speed.
If the CPU is still shown as an incorrect speed, contact the seller immediately.
Oh, and CHECK the motherboard manual, there may be jumper SETTINGS you need to configure or settings in the BIOS, that could also affect the speed.
I think it's most likely to be stepping though.
Hope this helps.Hi Calum. Thanks for the prompt reply. I`ll LET you know how I get on.

JohnHi Calum. Setting the power scheme didn`t work, so did as you suggested and contacted the seller. He told me to alter the CPU FSB in the bios to 400 and now its showing 2.19 Ghz.

Thanks again. JohnThat's what I thought it'd be if it wasn't stepping, a setting in the BIOS or a jumper.
The seller would've just CONSULTED the manual about that.
Glad you got it sorted and thanks for posting back.

Solve : No BIOS after plugging in HDD?

Answer»

This is my friends computer (It's an EMACHINE LVMM2 board), I have never seen this problem before. He said that when he would turn on the computer, Windows XP blew loading bar would freeze up after a few SECONDS, and would never load up. so when he brought it over, I plugged it all in, and i got a no signal on 2 seperate monitors. fans all work when i powered it up. so i thought it was the on board video, i hooked up a agp, nothing, then a pci video card, still nothing. I pulled the cpu (AMD 2600+) and H.S, and the ram chip, put it all in another older board. it worked, swapped power supply's. still worked. then i thought that maybe the board was bad. I got a new biostar board, I pre-tested the board barebone just ram and cpu with HS. I got a signal to my monitor and went to bios.

I went ahead and put the computer all back together and then no signal and no bios. got another board, put it together a peice at a time and powered it up starting barebones. when I hooked up the hard drive it would not post and no signal on monitor. disconnected the HDD and then it was fine. I thought i had hooked it up wrong the first time, so i tried it again. Again no post. so i disconnected the HDD and tried barebones again, and now i cant get a signal or a post. this time its an ABIT board with a light on it when it gets power. fans still work and all, but no signal. i replaced the bios chip, with an updated one from ABIT, that DIDNT work either.

Can anybody help me solve this problem? Can a IDE HDD FRY a motherboard? I cant think of how it could, but at this point, I guess anything is possible.Quote

... Can anybody help me solve this problem? Can a IDE HDD fry a motherboard? I cant think of how it could, but at this point, I guess anything is possible.

Yes, and so can static electricity. Did you ground yourself before you touched the motherboard? ESD can kill it.

You might WANT to try the hard drive in a used system with a motherboard that is so old you don't care if it stops working to see if you get the same result. Also, touch something metal while you work in the computer to ground yourself, or use a static strap.yeah i was static free and grounded with my static strap, I have worked on and built several computers in the past, but I have never seen this problem. i tried the hard drive in another older board, no response, then that board worked fine, after I removed the HDD from it. still nothing from the new board. it spins up and lights do come on, like its still a good board, but will not get a signal to the good monitors. any other ideas? I thought that maybe the HDD was infected with a virus, and it flashed my bios chip with a bunch of crap, but installed new chip without the HDD, and still not working like its suppose to.Quote

A virus will not do this...

Solve : hard drive formating error?

Answer»

I just built a new pc with a new sata wd 250gb hard drive. Every time I try to install xp, I get an error during formating of my PARTITION. I have tried it SEVERAL TIMES using different sized partions all with the same results. Any ideas?you might have some bad sectors go to the manufacture and get the checking tool..

unlovedwarriorduring the installation are installing the SATA drivers ?
early in the installation there is a pause when the install stops asks about any SCSI driver that are required, at that time you should install the SATA drivers usually from a floppy disc that came with the motherboard, although windows XP Sp2 has almost got SATA drivers they are not part of XP installation and must be added, they are in Vista but there is also a few other driver problems with Vista. It WOULD also HELP to post some specifics about your hardware.

Solve : RAM help please!?

Answer»

Hey guys, this is my first post here, Im loving the help others got! looks great!

Ok, I have minimal computer knowledge so bare with me, ill explain it the best I can.

I recently bought some new ram for my comp. I downloaded PC wizard 2007 to help keep up with my computer temps (I PLAY games on my comp).

Well anyways, when looking at all PC wiz was telling me, it said this about my ram:

DDR-SDRAM PC-3200 @ 200 mhz (3-3-3-8)

I have 2 1024 sticks, but the ram is suppost to be 400 mhz, not 200 mhz. I feel that i could be getting MUCH more out of my computer if i get this ram running to its full potential. Help please! How can i get it to run at 400 mhz?

A FRIEND of mine said it might be my motherboard. I have windows XP perfessional, my motherboard is a biostar P4M800 Pro-M7 (yes crappy i know sorry :-/). The manual says it supports ddr 400 mhz ram so im not sure whats going on

It's twice pumped.
2 x 200 = 400

If you want to learn a little bit more about your computer and you have a mother board manual....
Go to the SECTION that covers BIOS settings and have a look at the settings and explanations.
The area you ask about is typically in "Advanced Chipset Features"

If you have a manufactured computer (Dell, HP etc) you MAY not have that sort of detail in the manual.
In that case there may be an online manual for your mobo.Oh, lol im stupid slowly learning! thanks!

Solve : Computer Hangs After completing Ram Check!?

Answer»

Been playing with this one a week now. To me it acts like the BIOS is corrupted. Heres the story. PC is 3 years old and been on for a couple of weeks working GREAT when I notice it's slowing down on simple tasks, so I reboot and right after it completes the memory check successfully the "Matrix Logo" appears then it hangs up. Rebooting and using the the F2 key will get you into the entering setup screen then nothing but a blinking DOS like curser and a BLANK screen. Next I stripped the machine down to barebones to see if I had a conflict, IE bad CABLE ETC. Even removed the one memory the the other but still can't get into bios, let alone boot from floppy drive. If I could boot from floppy I figure I could at least reflash the BIOS! Anyone have any Ideas?? I even changed out the power supply thinking it might be weak?
System is running a P4 Intel running @2.6Hz with a Intel MOBO D845BG
Thanks! In advance!I'm assuming it is a hardware problem. Hard drive might have failed, a RAM stick going bad, a short in the motherboard, or the power supply might be failing. Without diagnostic tools you can run from a bootable disc, the only way to figure out the cause might be to swap known good parts for the suspected bad ones and see if the computer works. If you can still get into the BIOS setup, make sure it shows the hard drive is working and reports the correct amount of RAM. If there are any diagnostic tools in the BIOS setup, run them. Thanks for the fast response! Great suggestions. I can't get into the bios at this time but I will continue to play with it to elimate the easy ones.
Thanks !

As previous, It is trying to connect to the internet and with this model,
the little connect page has digits it fills up with about 5 or 6 digits, . .it gets to two digits starts to stop GOES up to three, then either stops or drops back to none at all.

If the advisory above is right, and it very well could be, do to updates that have not been fullfilled lately, that I am sure of.

My question if this is the case is there a way for those downloads to be downloaded to me placed on a CD then installed into the Dell Laptop ?

Solve : Bios shuts down pc?

Answer»

i im new here but will try to explain my PROBLEM the best i can.....Recently i tried to get into my bios settings on startup so i can choose to boot with 2x gfx cards (pci-e) setup, to my horror after pressing the said DEL key, i get a black screen with blinking CURSOR then my PC just switches off, this happens everytime, i have flashed the bios to the most uptodate one and it still does it, i have also tried taking all components out of tower and trying to get in with nothing installed...still the same, i have taken out and replaced, memory, HD, the lot, it happens eveytime, i have even taken the battery out for about 30mins and it still does it....so my Q is has ANYONE else suffered from this? or if my mobo or bios is damaged surly i would have lots of beeping or errors when i switch my pc on. :-? :-? :-?

Mobo A8n-sli deluxe
bios revision 1805, flashed from 1600 which was working at some point, not sure when i stoppedAnd you flashed the BIOS because......

How about setting everything to fail SAFE options in the BIOS and use only 1 stick RAM, 1 graphics card and no drives. Does it boot?i think your motherboard is defectivein resonse to.....Quote

surely a moderator would have been able to read it properly?!? i quite simply state that I CANNOT GET INTO BIOS, as it shuts my pc down when it should display blue screen, and i flashed because i thought upgrading to current version might help, MUCH like taking components out and trying step by step...which i have done.... but it didnt much like your post....You can remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds. That will do it. You may have created a door stop.

Solve : HARD DISK DRIVE FAILURE?

Answer»

I HAVE A TOSHIBA TECRAA7 WHEN I TURN IT ON I GET MESSAGE ''SMART failure predicted on hard disk.....
WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.
Press F1 to continue.
when i press F1 i still CANT continue, is my hard disk definately had it, or is there a possible repair rather than to replace. They NORMALLY cannot be repaired. You should get a new HDD and while at the computer store also get a 2.5" to IDE connector cable. This will allow you to hook up that laptop HDD to a working desktop system and with a little luck you may be able to retrieve your data.thankyou, it wasn"t really what i WANTED to HEAR but at least i know nowYou're Welcome...stop by anytime.

Solve : software guy needs help with hardware?

Answer»

ok my friends mom brought me two old COMPUTERS

one with win me is labeled shawn and the one with old xp home is emily

ill describe whats up with both of them and you guys can chose which one to work on first

i cant really give great detail about them cuz they dont work right..

they both were sitting forever and they both were cover in dust it took me a little while to clean them both out and i think i sacraficed parts of both my lungs and i looked like a miner when i went to class

shawn(winme) might have a mix of both hardware and software problems. first once i cleaned it and got it running a box poped up and said updating hardware databasebut it stopped at 66% and wouldnt move. after that i busted out the restore CDS and restored it and it looked like it was going to work but the magic windows error came up and said files were missing, so when i get home im going to REFORMAT the bugger and see what that does.

ok now for emily(xp home) ok hers just wont show video when i hooked up my monitor and turned her computer on the monitor just continued to do the self check thing, it has an onboard video card so yea and i dont know what kind of slots its has cuz i have a vid card i COULD put in it to check.

there is no rush on this emily's mom told me to get it done when i want but i love a challenge

thanks for the help

unlovedwarriorA reformat for the ME machine seems best.
As for the XP one, does it show video with another monitor?
Try your video card if not, you won't be able to insert the wrong video card so that's safe.
Make sure the PSU has enough juice to handle it first.
Does the PC run and not show video, or just not start?ok ill actually reformat the win me computer

the xp one seems like it will start but just no video, they tried all of their monitors already so ill try my vid card todayYeah, try that and see how it goes.

Solve : SCSI Hard Drive on an IDE motherboard?

Answer»

I have a World disk 147 GB SCSI 80 pin hard drive. i need to know what i need to put it on a Acorp Advance Board, which i think is IDE. Any help will be greatly appreciated.!! thank you mattA SCSI controller and cable that is appropriate for it.You will require SCSI controller CARD and the correct cable TYPE,
I think your drive could be an Ultra 320 80-PIN SCA2 and that type were made by Fujitsu and Hitachi, the cables are slightly different from IDE.
Scsi Drivers were almost allways installed at the time of installing the operating system, and problems can arise if you TRY to install insitu.

( But do not take my word for it, Read what is on the Hard Drive and then Please check with the MANUFACTURERS)

Solve : the screen says: "overwrite" and it doesnt turn on?

Answer»

Hi all...
I have a problem with a computer. The screen says: "OVERWRITE" and the computer does not turn on. is it the harddrive that is causing this? how can i fix it?We're going to need a lot more info than that. As GX1_Man always says...

Quote

Please post as much information about your computer, OPERATING system, and problem as possible, what happened prior to problems, etc. Too much info is OK, too little is pointless! Don't just SAY "My computer doesn't work. What's wrong?" We shouldn't have to drag the details out of you. It is YOUR problem, not ours.
my computer is a DELL optiplex desktop (pentium 4, 512 RAM, 60gb HD) and it has windows xp pro. It is one year old. when i turn it on it says "overwrite" but windows does not start. it didnt have any problems before and i really dont know why this happened.

Solve : Laptop screen going off?

Answer»

I am trying to sort out a friends laptop for him, its a Toshiba tecra 8100, and a few years old now, I have re-formatted it but the screen goes off after a few minutes, the warmer it gets the sooner it goes off. However if you press the plunger that OPERATES when it closes then the screen comes back on but goes off again soon after. It does flash as if its trying to come back on if you leave it, it was doing this before I messed with it, just thought starting with a clean slate might improve things. Any ideas. When you say you re-formatted it what does that mean ? ?
Is there an OS installed ? ?
Did you re-install the Toshiba DRIVERS for everything ? ?

Laptops can be finicky...they tend to shut themselves down if every little thing isn't hunky dory in order to protect themselves from the user...When I say re-formatted, I mean re-installed XP, formatting the HDD as I went. This problem was occuring before I touched the laptop, the screen shuts down at any time even in the boot menu, actually on closer inspection its not the screen that goes off, just the back light, if you look closely you can still make out the screen still working.Check the Windows Power Options:

Click Start > Control Panel > Switch to Classic View > Power Options.

Ok, the screen only goes off when it is connected to the mains power supply, as soon as you connect it the screen goes slightly brighter and within 30 seconds it goes off, it also seems to stay on longer the more you tilt the screen back but this could be just a coincidence. Is there a way to adjust the brightness, MAYBE that would help. This is different for different laptops. Usually it is accomplished by pressing and holding a special KEY and then pressing another key to adjust the brightness.Maybe a look at the MANUAL or on the Toshiba site would be helpful. You might also check the Fn key combination for the video output mode. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you which mode is in operation. The output modes are: 1. laptop screen 2. external monitor 3. both. Hook up an external monitor and try the key combos to get it in the proper mode.

Solve : Monitor mystery?

Answer»

I have an Nvidio GeForce 5200 video card running on Windows XP home EDITION, and have been running two monitors without problems; one flat screen and one CRT. The CRT went green, then black--and I replaced it with a flatscreen. At first, the video card would not recognize the second monitor. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, but it still would not recognize the second monitor.

Then one day, for no apparent reason, the second monitor came online, and worked beautifully; I had no problems configuring it in dual screen mode.

Then I had to reboot for something and LOST the monitor. I did the driver reinstallation again, switched PORTS to see if it was the monitor itself (monitor WORKS fine). REBOOTED again, still no joy.

about three reboots (for other reasons) later, the monitor came on line again.

Until the next reboot, when I lost it. I still don't have it.

Help?
