Solve : Glitch with BFG GeForce FX 5200?

Answer»

Greetings,

I've been experiencing this problem for a little while now. It never used to happen, but now, whenever I use my FX 5200 in my computer, I'll have a lot of crashes. SOMETIMES it starts up and the VIDEO just cuts out, and the monitor no longer receives a signal from it. When I screw around with starting in safe-mode, or VGA mode, sometimes I get it to just work and not crash, but I am really seeking out stability here, and I don't know what else to do. When it USES the Microsoft Corporation driver it seems fine for the most part, ANY NVIDIA driver I try though always results in crashes at some point, what can I do?

If you need more data then is contained in http://home.comcast.net/~pauvro/Report_03032007.htm LET me know.

And yes, right now I am using the onboard video...so it can function.

Thanks for any help!!

Solve : wireless access?

Answer»

I recently installed a PC in my basement. I know want to add internet ACCESS. Extending the ethernet cable form mu router into the basement is not feasible. I am using a wireless card ( DWL g 132). The signal is very low.

Is there an easy to boast the signal or repeat the signal from the my Actiontech mI624 router ?

You may have structural interference, or two many neighborhood networks using the same channel. Some specifics could be helpful. How many computers are on your home NETWORK?I have two PC directly connected to the router. I have a third PC on a wireless xard above the router with a strong signal. My fourth PC (with weak signal) is in the basement. I do have structural issues with the basement PC since the signal must go through two concrete WALLS. I have looking for a ways to avould thesse wall by using a wirsless repeater or something like that. I LIVE in dense suburban area and I see my neighbors network stronger than my network.

thanksQuote

An idea to consider - a home brewed antenna reflector.

Here is some description:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/49882/reflector_shield_as_cheap_wireless.html

Usually this sort of thing is used in the horizontal plane, to extend range in the desired direction, and to reduce unwanted signals from other directions.
It would be interesting to see how well it works in the vertical plane.

I've seen the results of a reflector - it was dramatic. However in the situation I observed, the whole problem was distance from the wireless router. Possible interference from other signals did not exist. Where I saw it, was at a friends place of business. The building is about 70 yards from his house. Using a laptop in that building was spotty. You had to find a good place, and keep the laptop still.

They added a home made reflector, made from plans found on the web. Now the user of the laptop, in that building, can move about freely, just the same as in the house.

Those concrete walls are definitely trouble.
I've got similar hardware...Actiontec wireless router and D-Link wireless card.
35 feet and two sheetrock walls apart.

A remote antenna connected to the D-Link card gave me a strong, stable signal.
The antenna is a Zonet ZWA2006. There are D-Link and Buffalo versions that look identical. Probably all the same MFR.
After a little experimentation I grabbed the strongest and most stable channel.

Linksys makes a signal booster but I haven't used it.

thanks for the input.

I went to Comp USA and BB yesterday and both tried to sell the following device to boast the wireless signal. One adapter plus into my router and an electrical OUTLET. A second device plugs into an electrical outlet near my PC. I did not buy the item.

Do these devices work ?

One last thing is that I have a wireless phone jack near the PC. My guess is that this impacts my wireless PC signal.

Thanks

Solve : Help w/new HDD for dell laptop?

Answer» Hello.

I recently bought a used dell latitude d520 laptop. It worx fine but kinda light on specs. Duo2 core, 40gb hd, 512mb RAM. I just bought a new 250gb internal hd. I cant get it to work properly. I INSTALL the OS, but I get this error all the time. Says "a problem has been detected and windows was shut down to save my computer". A blue screen, it also says other STUFF to try if the error keeps APPEARING. Stuff I have no clue about, says to disable cacheing and shadowing, but again, I have no idea. It does not give detailed instructions. Should this big hd work on this laptop?? I got it from ebay and it says it was for my model.

One question tho ...... would 1/2gb of RAM be enough to run this?? I believe it is, but not sure. I do not want an ext hd, I REALLY want this one to work.

Thanx in advance for any replies.
Welcome to the CH forums.

You don't say which OS you have installed, XP is assumed. You may have a problem if you didn't use the original install disk supplied with the laptop.

Half a gig of ram should be ok but on this SITE a hard drive with "Capacities of up to 100gb" is mentioned.

Others will probably be able to give more detailed info than I can and I recommend you looking at a Dell specific forum.

Good luckXP, and I did use the original re-install disc. That's fine. The only grey area left is the size of the hdd which the mobo will support. Can't attempt to be MUCH more help until you post the actual error message(s) displayed.

Solve : CD/DVD burner will read and play dvds but no cd or cd-rom's?

Answer»

My DVD/CD drive can read a DVD-ROM and play an DVD, but it cannot play a CD or a CD-ROM.
i can play pc games that are on dvd rom dics and i can watch dvd on my computer but i can not listen to music or play games that are on cd's or cd rom's.
i went to properties and it says that its working correctly and i GO to troublshooter and it has no options for my problem.
ive tried seeing if a drver download would fix it but no.
this problem i HAV emakes it aweful hard to reformat my computer when my computer wont read the windows XP dics.

any ideas or am i just going to end up haveign to buy a new cd dvd drive???Do you have another computer you can put that burner into? If CDs can be read when the device is installed in a different computer we will know the device is probably not the culprit. Some burner/players have 2 lasers in them for the different functions...sounds like one of the lasers are shot.no i dont have a extra computer laying around but if i did that would be nice haha thanks for the tip though i think it might be cheaper to get a new dvd cd burner then to buy a computer to see if this burner works im not sure though Stephena11987,Is this optical unit a recent addition to the computer? Is this something that just started to be a problem or has this always been the case? What is the default audio player that you are using? Have you tried more than one audio player to see if they all react the same? I assume that all the components of the DVD play are AVAILABLE IE; both audio and video? It does sound most likely that the problem is related to the drive but maybe it is the audio player that can be the culprit. Is the unit a burner as well as a rom? Have you tried to burn a cd disk and if so what was the result? If you can burn a cd try and see if the resultant cd will play on a stand alone cd player and report back. Truenorthstephana11987, I have taken out my cd r/w SEVERAL TIMES by deleting software especially using "delete" not "remove programs" in control panel. try SYSTEM RESTORE at a date when you know the hardware was working properly i also have used 'uninstall" in the hardware manager then rebooted the computer. when the computer reboots, click on 'start', you should see "new hardware found". hardware manager should show your cd r/w is re-installed i have recovered lost drivers that way. system restore is the safer way

Solve : New ATI 2600 HD 512MB, need help!?

Answer»

First of all, my specs:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz
1GB of DDR
120GB HD, 500GB external
ATI 2600 HD 512MB DDR2 (AGP)
Mobo - P5P800S

Recently I purchased ATI 2600 HD 512MB AGP and after installing it I noticed my computer started processing much slower than with nVidia 6800 XT 256MB. I went into BIOS settings and tried to change video settings from 256MB to 512MB but 256 was the last and highest there. Does this mean my motherboard doesn't support 512MB video card? I just increased monitor refresh rate from 60 to 75 which increased the speed and looks like it works to its potential, but is there anything else I should do to maximize performace and make sure I get full speed out of this card?

Thanks in advance,

- DimaWhat exact setting did you change in the BIOS?
Make sure you completely uninstall your old video drivers and install the latest ATI drivers for your new card.I didn't change completely I only tried. I am at work right now and I can't remember the name, it was something like VGA, after pressing Enter it allows you to choose your video card memory starting with really low (around 56 may be lower) and going up to 256. Since there was no 512 option I didn't end up changing anything and didn't save the settings. Yep, I completely uninstalled my previous drivers from nVidia.I think what you tried to change is the onboard memory allocation, for the onboard graphics chip.
Let us know exactly what it's called when you get HOME if that's OK.
Is the system overall slower, or just in 3D applications?Mostly windows related tasks, 3D applications perform pretty good. Is the ATI 2600 HD really better than nVidia 6800 XT?

Sure, I'll post the setting when I get home. Thanks guys.At first you said it replaced a 6800XT, is that right or was it a 6600XT?
What kind of memory did it have, GDDR3 or DDR2?Sorry, my bad (already modified). Correct it is 6800 XT, I believe it was just DDR.The 2600 PRO should be faster than the 6800XT.
If it's Windows related tasks that are slower rather than 3D, i think it may be a lack of maintenance.
What maintenance do you do on your PC?I use CCleaner to use temporary and unused files, Registry Mechanic, once every couple of times I'll perform defragmentation. Always updated although recently I had Ad-ware from some MelWare website but it was cleaned by Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 and I happen to FIND large amounts of small files created in different folders probably left from ad-ware but they don't do anything. And so I CHECKED the setting that I tried to change it is Graphics Aperture Size currently set to 256 and thats the highest option. What is this? Does this have anything to do with the video card?I'd remove the CMOS battery for 10 minutes with the machine unplugged and then replace it ...re-boot and start over...who knows how many changes you made in the BIOS that could be the cause of these symptoms.

Solve : Kogi LCD Monitors?

Answer»

Does anybody know about Kogi LCD monitors, specifically the L5QX. Manufactured circa 2004. SOMEONE gave me a working one with no papers or drivers and I'm trying to find drivers and maybe even a manual for this.ummm...you plug it in. you dont need drivers.Ummm...Thanks for your input, Homer. Of course, I've already DONE that and it worked fine. Nevertheless, manuals and such are usually available from somewhere and that's what I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with. Googling KOGi doesn't seem to produce anything helpful, and I BEGIN to think the COMPANY may no longer exist. Nevertheless (if I may be reduntant), nothing sought, nothing gained.
SMK
Do you have a specific question about a feature on the monitor? If it works fine, why worry about not having a manual or driver for it? Obviously, you don't need a driver for it. And, if it has some buttons to CONTROL various settings, you can probably figure that out by experimentation. Also sometimes you can get lucky googling an FCC ID #...hi i found this site if it,s any help............www.fixya.com/support/kogi

Solve : Problems with HP 1050C on a network?

Answer»

Hi everyone!

First of all, being a newbie in this forum, I dont know where to post my problem, so please bear with me. I find the site very USEFUL so just decided to give it a try..

Recently, I was asked by my boss to install HP 1050C on ONE of the computers in our office. I installed it using the administrator account of our network. I did install it fine. I was able to print an Arc/Info genrated file.

The problem is, when Im using an ordinary log, that belong to a power users group of the network, I cant print anymore. What could be the problem.

Well, I install the plotter on a Windows2000. AMD 3000Hz. 1Gb memory station.

Thanks in advance! SmileyHow is the HP 1050c connected to your network? (Is it connected directly to one computer and then shared or is it connected via a print server?) 1. Windows 2000 host computer.
a. How is the printer connected to the host computer? Using parallel port?
b. Host computer is running Windows 2000 or Windows 2000 Server operating system?
c. Is the host computer standalone, in a workgroup, or in a domain?
d. What file system is in use on the host? NTFS?

2. User Accounts.
a. Printer installed using a "domain" administrator account or the "local" administrator account?
b. The ordinary user is a "domain" account or a "local" account.
c. The ordinary user is a member of the "Power Users" group. How does this work? Is this a "domain" group or a "local" group.

3. Test Prints.
a. The installation administrator account was able to print. From the host machine or a client machine elsewhere on the network.
b. What operating system was the client machine using?
c. What file system is the client machine using?
d. Is client machine part of the same workgroup or domain as the host?
e. How did you access the "shared" printer from the client machine
- From the Add Printer Wizard
- Using Start-Run to open a window containing the shared printer
- Using My Network Places to open a window containing the shared printer
f. The ordinary user tried to print from the host computer? And also from the same client computer the administrator used to test?
g. Can the ordinary user "see" the printer from the client computer?
h. What is the exact text of the error message when ordinary user attempts to print from the host computer? From the client computer?

4. Printer PERMISSION(s):
a. Check NTFS permissions for printer on host computer.
b. Check "shared" permissions for printer on host computer.

I don't have any experience with Windows 2000, but I studied for the Microsoft Windows XP exam and recall that NTFS permissions are tricky. For example, if you deny printer access to "Users" group but permit it for "Power Users" group, your ordinary user would be denied if he is a member of both groups because the "Users" group is denied. Denials take precedence over Acceptance.

The following utilities from www.sysinternals.com might be of value:
AccessChk
AccessEnum
ShareEnum

And one from Microsoft via TechRepublic:
Check access permissions on shares

5. If you want to do some reading, here are some Microsoft documents on the subject.
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
Well, ACTUALLY the printer is directly connected to the network. I installed it using the domain admin account and the ordinary user i was REFERING to is the domain user account.. I think the problem is on that particular computer because i tried to print to another computer on the same domain using the same account and i was able to print. I just couldn't pinpoint the problem...

Anyways, thank you all for the reply.. I think I'll be havign a great time here!

Solve : IDE To SATA Drive issues?

Answer»

Well..I like to think that I know a bit about computers but I find myself at a cross road. I built my own computer and packed up and went to college, here I am and my WD 250G hard drive is filling up fast, so I purchased a new Seagate 250G hard drive without realizing that all of my ATA/100 IDE PORTS are full. I am now looking at purchasing a IDE to SATA adapter. but my problem comes when I want to also connect a third CD-Rom drive to my system also. Right now I am running with a single CD-Rom drive on a single IDE (there is NO way that I can change this so there are two devices on this cable, that is how my case is designed) and on the other IDE I have a CD Burner and my WD hard drive connected to the other IDE port. What do you suggest that I do to connect my third CD drive and second hard drive? Please note that I am running Windows Vista and have all other information for my computer if needed. Please include brand names to devices recommended, and I am NOT going to replace/sell/buy another hard drive or cd drive to solve this issue. I am also looking for a CHEAP but affective answer. Thanks!!!Also feel free to AIM me - jmwileman
Remove your e-mail address or be prepared for the spammers.....thanks, I was hoping that this would be a place of DECENT people, but I guess not.Yes, we're quite decent folks here but do get the odd troller passing thru'..

Onto your query. Provided you have a pci slot available, is one of >>these<< cheap enough for you, or perhaps >>this<<, or something along those lines. If you opt for either please ensure you read the specs and reviews, some don't perform very well with atapi devices.

Good luck.

It is not the members of this forum you need to worry about. Spammers are known to use software that scans forums, guest books and the like for email addresses. So unless you like spam, never post your email address (or any other personal info) in a public place.
Thanks Dusty, I think that I am going to go with the 2 port PCI connector. If I have any more questions I will post up here, but I think that solved my issue. You're welcome - glad to be of some small service.

BTW you might want to check your PSU power rating before hanging much more hardware on your pc especially if you're overclocked. There's a free Lite calculator >>here<< and the Pro version with all the bells and whistles is shown to be priced at an exorbitant $1.99 (yep, just under two bucks). I've never used it but if you want another calculator there are lots on the WWW. You would want a safety margin in addition to the required power rating, so if the required rating was say 450w you would want something like 600w for safety. A psu which cannot withstand the peak loading can cause absolute havoc with hard drives.

Don't omit to backup your work to another medium (cd/dvd etc) hard drives have been known to die suddenly.

Good luck with your pc and with your studies.Yeah I acually thought of that before I built my computer and how much I would want to be able to add to it, so I am good, my board will COMPLY along with my power supply. but thank you for being concerned, not many people would go out of the way to help others in checking that stuff. thanks again for all your help.another question on this line .... I have the PCI adaptor card because MY MOBO (biostar) only has one IDE port.. I wish to connect 2 HD's and a DVD burner, which the card allows me to do. However, both HD's have windows XP installed on them, will this cause a CONFLICT when I boot up even if I have the Jumpers set correctly ?
I am also assuming that both HD's should be on the same IDE slot on the card.. I only have the card. no manual or software but I did DL the driver from the Maxtor site for it , just no "read Me" file ....Netforce - you should start your own topic for your query - good forum etiquette.

Having an operating system on both hard drives will not be a concern provided that the hdd you boot from does not have a dual-booting Boot.ini file.

I would suggest that both hdd's be on the mobo ide as master/slave and the dvd burner on its lonesome on the card - or did you mean you want to install an ADDITIONAL two hdd's and the burner?

What is already installed on the mobo ide?

Thanks Dusty for the info was unsure where to post this as a new question .Just connecting My old HD with a new one and a DVD burner total (3) three. Two (2) HD's off the MOBO and the DVD (1) burner by it's lonesome got t ...Thanks again You're welcome - thanks for coming back at us.

Solve : Motherboard replacement?

Answer»

I have a hp 2000 series laptop. The screen will not come on, you can see a little, but very dark. Best Buy suggested it was probably the back LIGHT GONE bad. I took it to a comp repair shop, was told the screen is OK, the problem is with the inverter bd. They replaced inverter and found the mother bd is not supplying enough PWR to the inverter. I was told the motherboard needs to be replaced. I was quoted a price which would just about = a new unit. My ? is if I can find a motherboard for my unit is it possible for me to install myself. Can I apply the memory in the original motherboard to the new bd, are the components transferable. I have more ?s but 1st things 1st' can I do this?

Thanks in advance

How old is this laptop?
If it's under warranty it will cover it.
Otherwise, don't even TRY. Laptop components are not designed to be user-serviceable, especially the motherboards. I would bet good money that it's actually impossible, not just hard but impossible, to remove the motherboard and fit a new one without destroying the laptop.
That's if a replacement board is even possible to find, which I doubt.
Sorry but I think you're SOL if the warranty's run out.OK... I'll bite... Has anyone ever heard of the motherboard not providing enough power to the inverter (assuming the supply cable from motherboard/power source to the inverter is in good shape)? Is it "enough" power or "no" power?

Please, this is a serious question (as I don't have the experience to say one way or the other).

Did replacing the inverter board improve the readability of the display?

And the "old" inverter board is/was good? The backlight?

Was there a parts charge for the inverter and/or a service charge for their effort?

What is standard practice for service fees within the industry?

RESPECTFULLY,
The Lone Haranguer

Did you try removing the battery (take it out and leave it out) and running the laptop off the wall current (thru the AC/DC adapter)? Isn't it possible the battery is old, tired, and affecting the power output to the display?

What is Win32 Error?Did you try googleing it?hi there win32 is a system file error which in short means some how you lost part of the sys files easy to restore thou so no problem just put your os disc in ,boot from the CD and after it loads a few files click next DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR from the first screen you see but hit enter ,then a new menu will open up click repair from here ,it will find the missing file and reload it with out losing any thing from your system .
good luck and keep us informed.I've NEVER seen the DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR option when booting from an XP CD...
If offering advice don't just throw anything out there...these are peoples computers we're dealing with.
Instructions should be more specific than stated above.prehaps my grammar isnt quiet in your league i was stating do not repair from the first option as for throwing any thing up im a tad to old to play with expensive equipment without putting my money where my gob is , i may be stabbing here but you got a problem with me or some thing? cause i find your COMMENTS quiet rude ,a question if i may sir, american by any chance?
Please re-read my post.
The point i was making is if the instructions are not specific enough for the user to follow then bad things can and do happen.
You need to be clearer in telling someone what to do to fix a problem without possibly creating a bigger problem.

If you are here to make every post a personal issue then trust me it won't last.

Solve : Computer wont start after i installed a new video card.?

Answer»

Ok, so i tried to install a new video card on my computer last night. I went to start it up and got to the windows xp loading screen with the scrolling bars and then it goes to a black screen and hangs there. I think my problem is i disabled my onboard video, and the new card i installed doesnt want to work at all. I cant get into windows to re enable the onboard video, and when i press F8 to get to start up options all i get is an option to boot from CDROM, hard drive, or floppy. One time i got a blue screen telling me it stopped my computer from starting up to avoid damage, but i dont remember what it said. I took out the new video card, and IM sure the fix is getting the onboard video working again, but i cant get past the loading screen to do that.

Im running windows xp, its a custom built computer, maybe half a year old. I dont think the new video card SPECS are relevant to this but if they are ill post them.

Also, my main problem is not being able to USE safe mode at all. Ive never had a reason to use it before, and usually its F8 F10 or something, and XP is F8 last time i looked and for some reason it doesnt give me any of the normal startup options, just what i posted above.F8 needs to be tapped repeatedly as soon as you power up and before the Windows splash screen is seen...
Then re-enable the onboard video and re-boot.

NOTE: Although it's suggested often most machines do not have to have the onboard video disabled when adding a video card...I disabled it myself, and F8 wont give me the safe mode, safe mode with networking, ETC. Im going to mash other F keys and see what i get. I think the mistake i made was disabling onboard, now there is no video at all for windows to start up on. Either that or i did something i didnt mean to do. I did disable my anti viris from starting up on startup.Ah, apparently my computer enjoys being unique, my safe mode button was F11 for some maniacal reason. I got into SAFEMODE and re enabled it, now it starts up fine. Im going to throw this video card in the trash, thanks for the help anyway.F11 ? ?
Someone is out to get you...
Does F8 go to Setup ?

Solve : Old Tech Question?

Has any one bought anything from http://www.vintagecomputer.com/ ? I'm sort of skeptical about giving my debit info if this isn't a trusted site.squall_01,Cannot comment on this particular firm. However i was recently faced with a similar dilemma (even though i have made a great deal of online purchases of all kinds and never yet been scammed or received anything other than what i expected--not to say it cannot happen).I do note that this firm offers payment by "paypal" and that will AVOID the problem of sharing credit card information with the vendor. I do not have any vested inters in paypal other than being a very new subscriber to their service. You will receive all the information re their services by visiting their web site. You will need to provide either credit card or bank ACCOUNT info to them--but they never share that with any vendors. The service is free UNLESS you use it for cash withdrawls. There are no transaction fees. There is an element of protection to the buyer if the product is received damaged or is shown to have been misrepresented (i have not yet needed to avail myself of that provision so i cannot attest to it's viability). At some POINT it will be a matter of faith and trust no matter with whom you chose to do business with. good luck ,truenorth

I've started to buy the components for my new BUILD, and I started off by getting the new Intel C2D E8400 3.0GHz 1333FSB
CPU. I BOUGHT it right away because everywhere I looked was backed up on orders and I figured there would soon be a price increase. Anyways, I also got Corsair Dominator 2x1GB DDR2 1066MHz RAM, and the only motherboard I can find that supports 1066MHz is the ASUS Striker II Formula LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard. This board also supports 45nm tech, (which is what the E8400 is).

I cant seem to find a MoBo that is both 1066MHz, and 45nm other than this one.

I figured I would post here to get some help/opinions on the problem. If SOMEONE can help find one cheaper than $330 USD (cost of the ASUS), it would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.do you want an SLI board?

if you want the 780i, i would go with EVGA. on ncix.com, the place where i shop, the ASUS 780i is $350 CAD, the EVGA 780i is $280 CAD.Yes, forgot about that. Also, i plan on installing a 64bit O.S. so I would like 8GB memory capacity. Thanks for the quick reply.^ read my modified post.

User reviews or professional reviews? I've read a lot of user reviews that just sound like RUBBISH. Like they just couldn't get it to work (no fault of the hardware, but the user's ability) and just run on and on with false negative information. The P5K board supports both 1066RAM and the 45nm...

SLI was not one of the requirements mentioned in the OP's original post.
There are many boards out there that will meet all 3 requirements...i was only pointing out 1.
As far as SLI goes if someone wants it than go for it. I don't see the cost/need differential as being worth it. But i have to qualify this statement by saying i'm a gamer...but not a hard-core gamer.Quote from: patio on February 14, 2008, 07:31:12 PM

Solve : PC Not Booting (kinda) Problem?

Answer»

WHY IS IT THAT MY MONITOR HAS NO DISPLAY1. Power Source. Is your system plugged directly into a wall outlet or into an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

2. RAM. Don't buy new RAM, test the old RAM first. I prefer the standalone program Memtest86 which may be booted from either a floppy diskette or CD. Read the literature on its WEBSITE. (By the way... you should avoid touching any of the chips, the connectors, or anything but the edges of the memory modules. And practice safe Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) precautions).

3. Safe Mode. Boot into Safe Mode and see if the system is stable (stays up). Safe mode boots up your operating system with a MINIMAL set of device drivers. Third party device drivers are a major source of system instability. Safe mode doesn't use them. (And yes, I know... it seems more like a hardware problem.)You talking to me or the invasion of Makanas?

If me, then no, tried Safe Mode, same result.

Can't test RAM with Memtest etc..because the PC doesn't stay on long enough. (apparently it takes a while)

and yes, i plug directly into the wall.
makanus you need to start a New Topic for your issue and provide alot more info.

smeltz are you saying it shuts down running MemTest also ? ?

Did you follow the THERMAL paste instructions posted ?

Let us know STEP by step what's been tried so far.

Also to determine what RAM it uses travel to Crucial's site and it will tell you. Since the machine won't stay running for any length of time you can't run the online scanner...however there is an option to wenter the machine specs manually.
Good Luck.

Solve : New DVD ROM drive problems?

Answer»

My brother built me a computer and the DVD drive was working fine, until some screws came loose and now it doesn't work. I've brought a new DVD drive and plugged it in, it reads the disk and it appears on My Computer but it only plays the sound, there isn't any visual. It says 'Create overlay failed' and Im not sure what I need to change.

Any HELP?cheesybeans414,welcome to the CH forums. We will need much more info before an intelligent reponce can be forthcoming. IE what is the brand of the optical device?is it the only optical device in the computer? Did it ever work properly (IE BEFORE the "screws" came "loose")?What HAPPENED to the "loose" screws? Did they fall into the interior of the computer while it was turned on? How is it connected to your sound card--via ide CABLE or by a unique connection from the rear of the optical device to the sound card? What are the restrictions if any re the type of disks that the drive permits? Have you tried a variety of disk makes? Are the device drivers properly installed/ What is the default DVD player? What video card do you have installed? Is it configured properly? Is this a DVD ROM or is it a DVD/rw? here is a link that explains the error message you are recieving--see if it may reflect the facts about the limitations of your hardware installed in your computer http://www.smartcomputing.com/techsupport/detail.aspx?guid=&ErrorID=22049 . good luck truenorthQuote from: truenorth on February 26, 2008, 08:13:01 AM

What happened to the "loose" screws? Did they fall into the interior of the computer while it was turned on?

:-)The DVD RW drive I originally had with the computer stopped working, and so I took the lid off and the two screws came out then, nothing went inside the computer.

I brought a new drive, assuming this was the only problem and this is a HL Storage CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Its the only disk drive I have on the comuter, hence the problem =S

This drive will play CDs and it will play the audio on DVDs when it plays through Media Player but when I play it through InterVideo WinDVD 8 that message comes up. The device is connected to the motherboard through a ide cable. There weren't any device drivers with the drive, it came by itself.

Hope this information helps! The overlay is to do with the video display driver. Check your display settings.

Can you play DVDs with Windows Media Player?

Can you read and copy data files off DVD-ROMs?

I altered my settings, altered the screen resolution and lowered the colour quality and neither made a difference.

The DVD only plays the sound on Media Player, theres isn't any visual. The drive reads DVDs fine and plays CDs, just can't get it to play the images.cheesybeans.what is the brand and model of your video card?truenorthI'd test the new DVD drive on another machine and best guess...return it as defective. The drive has been tested on another machine and it works OK on that one.

I'll try and find out the make and model of the video card. The sound card is within the motherboard so unsure of the make/ model numberI am 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the DVD drive, that the problem lies somewhere else, and I strongly suspect video driver or DVD playback software.
OK, is there anything I can get to solve either one of the possible problems?? Is there anywhere I can get another video driver or DVD playback software??cheesybeans, Just be patient i think this problem will be solved without returning anything or needing to buy anything new. It is not info on the sound card we need as the problem seems exclusive to be the ability to reproduce video. So the info on the video card (which more than likely is not integrated on the motherboard) is still required. Also it is normally the case that when a new optical device is purchased one of the things it comes packaged with is some software to perform the tasks that the device is capable of. Therefore you should have a cd-r with a DVD playing function (among other things) such as "Nero,Easy CD Creator,Or something similar) What is it you got? Is it installed? If you used the drive in another computer and it worked that tends to indicate most importantly that the fault (as Dias de verano has stated ) is "somewhere else". Given that your optical drive is brand new (i assume) have you tried contacting (by telephone is preferable) the drive manufacturer to lead you through the setup process. Here are some free DVD software programs (however i rec comend you try to use the one that came with your drive) http://www.cliprex.com/ , http://www.powerdvd.com-http.com/ (this one i do use --it is available as trial version ), http://www.download.com/RealPlayer/3000-2646_4-10073040.html , http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_1_ENU.html (this one is a more direct link to the "POWER DVD free trial site). Again i reiterate you should try some more to solve the problem with the existing hardware/software associated with the drive before you try these other DVD programs. If your problem is with a driver more than likely another software program will not solve it. good luck and keep us posted. give us the name and model of your video card. truenorth

Because updating the BIOS is occasionally unsuccessful while buying a BIOS chip costs HK$20 and the upgrade of this kind must be a success!

Solve : P4S800?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a P4S800 motherboard for 4 years now. I recently format and reinstall Windows XP, but I lost my CD with the drivers from the motherboard which has a integrated LAN. So I downloaded the drivers from ASUS. Evertything works except the networking. Each and every time I get an ip 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.*.*.

I found on google that there was a problem with winsock that could cause the problem. I tried the solution they offered but nothing worked. So now, I'm wondering, since these are new drivers, do I have to flash my BIOS to make it work?

Thanks in advanceJust tried to connect my internet in USB. Installed the driver and everything and I still get the same behavior. And when I use the tool to build a home network, it keep saying there was an error while setting the network. It may be easier to just purchase a NIC card and install it and it's drivers...their about 10 - 15 bucks.
How did you go about configuring the network after installing the drivers ? ?
All that needs to be re-done after a format.
Get the info for the settings from your ISP to start with.Well I have a network and my 2 other computer work fine but are wireless. My xbox 360 is WIRED to the network and work fine to. Everythign was working fine until I format. Last time I format I remembered that I only had to install the drivers from the CD and it was almost plug and play. I believe since I use the new drivers from ASUS website something is messed up. That why I wonder if I should update my BIOS or something like that. And I believe buying a new LAN card won't resolve the problem since I TRY to plug directly my internet in the USB port with the drivers and everything. Go to Start/Run and type in ipconfig /all on that machine and post the results...

It requires SP1 but I just reinstall Windows. SP1 Need you to have an access to internet because it validates your windows in order to install it.

What ver. of XP is this and why would validating be an issue ? ?
Have we been chasing a red herring this whole time ? ?
SP2 can be DLoaded on another machine and installed on this one....it will fit on most of the newer flash drives.
SP1 would be WASTING time as the Windows updates are cumulative...Manage to install SP2 and the new driver... Still the same behavior

Also, I was looking at the winsock problem..... on microsoft support they say in winsock 2 info i should see 10 section.... I only see two... could that be the reason why nothing works?hellite: what does it say in your device manager? that the drivers/device is working PROPERLY?

It's possible that the wrong driver is installed.

Also, you are right about the fact that there should not be any problems getting a connection after a reformat/install. As long as you've obtained the drivers (either through a CD or manufacturer's website), you should be able to connect. Just make sure that your browser is set to automatically detect LAN settings.

My advice, do some more digging for those network drivers on the ASUS website.Yes my device manager says it works adequatly. When I installed windows it even recognized the driver and installed some drivers. So right now I have tried 4 different driver : Windows default one, asus website, Sis website and the one in this forum. I don't know which other one I could try except the one on the CD but I lost it.

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us (There's only one driver for LAN so I can't go wrong)

Only thing left to try is to find someone with that CD who could do an Image of it and send it to me

Also noticed cpu jumps to 60% when opening Internet Explorer?
And, Task Manager (Processes tab) shows Internet Explorer to be the cause? Is that right? Does it stay at 60% or quickly drop down after you've opened IE? Does it MAKE a difference what website you're viewing? If you set your home page to about:blank, does that make a difference?

Is that computer performing under par on other tasks, also?

I suggest you download CCleaner (get Slim version here) and run it's Windows scan and it's Registry scan. When you run the Registry scan, you'll be prompted to back up your registry. Do so, then proceed and tell CCleaner to fix all problems found. Repeat the Registry scan, since it sometimes finds ADDITIONAL items upon repeat scans. Did that make a difference?

I did'nt want to dload firefox, I'd rather use IE and have it work properly.

I did CCleaner. Also the cpu usage drops back down after opening IE.

I was fiddling around IE's options and saw Manage Add-Ons, it had all these shockwave and java and HP things "Enabled" so I tried "Disable" to see what would happen. It seems to have helped? Could this have been the problem? I'd thought it would be faster still, being a new comp and all. Is this Vista's fault too?

NOTE:: When I got the comp home I realized the cpu fan was not attached, or had fallen off(?!), so I reattached it. Could the fan rattling around in there duirng shipping etc, have damaged the computer?Add-ons may cause slowness, that's why, I proposed, you install Firefox (it won't hurt a bit) as cross reference. This way, we'll know, if it's IE, or something else.

Some of them fail completely or partially when they TAKE a hit...
Are there any lights on the monitor ?yeah lights on the monitor are still on like the power indicator and four other lights for screen adjustment (which just blink)Does this machine have an external Modem ? ?
If so power down and un-install it and then re-boot and see what happens.
Also try the monitor on a working machine.
Borrow another vid card and swap it into your machine to determine if it's the vid card.

Solve : Problem with USB Plug-and-Play Sound Card?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought an external USB plug and play sound card that has a sound and microphone port. I use it on my desktop PC when I mix music so that I can have on my main channel and sound card the outpout sound while on the USB I can HEAR the next song I am going to play, it works flawlessly.

But when I get to use it on my laptop, HP DV2000 Windows Vista Ultimate, 2GB RAM, 120GB and AMD Turion 1.6Ghz, it works but then the main sound card "cancels out" and the computer will only output sound on the USB card and not the main sound card, in other words it only lets you have one sound card active at a time.

Is there any way to fix this, its extremely annoying to mix without listening to where you are going to mix in to the next song and I TEND to use my laptop more to mix in PLACES than my desktop PC.

Thanks in ADVANCE!

Solve : Mother board fried? or maybe cpu??

Answer»

Well, I moved my computer from my dorm room back to my house. when i started it up the first time the computer would turn off on its own about halfway through the windows loading screen. I decided maybe one of the USB plug-ins i had was shorting, so i removed all of the USB's, and just left my keyboard. This time the computer started and went to my windows screen PERFECTLY, but when i plugged in my USB mouse i got a BSOD, and my computer restarted. I then unplugged the mouse and the computer shut off. This time, I could not turn it back on. I’ve taken everything out and tried with different setups, I've also tried resetting BIOS, taking out the battery, messing with the PWR SW jumper, and no luck. I cant get any of the fans starting up. When i hit the power button there is no sign of life whatsoever. I am GOING to jump off a lift soon because i am getting pretty frustrated -_-.

If anyone has any ideas of what could be WRONG, and/or what i could do it would make my life a whole lot better. Also, if anyone solves the problem i will give them a cookie!

Thanks alot,
jeffhave you tried a different PSU?Is this the new build from a few months ago that had the PSU at 220 ? ?
That PSU may have given up the ghost ...hopefully the MBoard and CPU have survived once again.
Are you getting any beeps on startup at all ?
Did you re-seat all the internal components especially the RAM and vid card ?patio, did you like go back into my past and look at those old threads? cuz thats creepy!! but no that was a different build.

Yes i did reseat everything.

I tried a different PSU.

There is no beeps because the PSU doesnt even turn on. there is nothhing turning on at all.

I think im going to just change the mobo. Although the light does come on.. so i know its receiveing power.

Its been a while since i came on CH because i was so depressed with my computer i decided to take a break and re-think the situation. I guess its time to get a new mobo.

You guys think its dangerous to leave my cpu in the mobo thats dead? Because i really DONT want to have to replace it ><.

Thanks for ur help guys.

I'm not sure why you would think it's creepy...i recognised your name and remembered similar troubles with the machine.. and wanted to know what we were dealing with since there were no details whatsoever on the machine in question.

I'll move along now and leave it to others but i'd suggest posting some details on the machine.patio is...

creepy!!!....LOOOOOOOOOLpatio I <3 you o.O lol
It was just impressive that you remembered me because i rarely come on CH.

Machine details:

Cooler master centurion 534 case

Amd athelon 64x2 6000+ windsor

m2a-mvp (480 x chipset) mobo

2gigs of crucial DDR2 800

1 8800 gtx

Broadway Com Corp 600watt psu

2 150g wd HDD(SATA2)
1 500g maxtor HDD(SATA2)
1 60g old maxtor HDD(IDE)

GIGABYTE 92mm Ball CPU Cooler

I am also now considering that its possible that my CPU fan wasn't set on as well as it should have been. I had brought it back from my dorm, and it got knocked around. Sooo It may be possible that the fan was not on properly and my CPU got burnt out from multiple restarts.

Now my question to you guys... If it was my CPU that blew up, would my fans turn on? Like, would anything start at all? or would it just sit there and nothing would go on at all. Because if i could get any life at all out of anything i could try to trouble shoot, but i simply don't get any response.

Anyways once my paycheck comes ill buy some new parts, I'm just not sure what parts to buy ><.

Thanks again,
-Jeff

Solve : help! how do I tell whats wrong...?

Answer»

OK, I admit to not being a computer nerd. (bless you those that are with out my world would stop) my computer is randomly stops allowing my KEYBOARD to type. I seem to be able to move the plug to another usb port and the keybroad works again. So am I looking a a bad keyboard with no other symptoms or bad usb ports, or something worse? KEYBOARDS shouldn't stop working unless something bad had happened to them. Does the one you replace it with do the same thing after a while? Could you provide a little more info to what happend?I haven't actually replaced the key borad, i only have one. I simple moved the plug to another slot. We've done that twice. I even retarted the computer thinking it was a software or viral glitch. This keyboard has never been abused or even over used for that matter. It simply stops allowing you to type nothing show up on the SCREEN and if i unplug it and PUT it in another usb slot it works fine like now. hope that helps a littleYes, I think that the port is dirty. Try getting an electronic cleaner and spray the port lightly an the usb on keyboard. I found DeoxIT to work.where do find that?
Most Electronic or Hardware stores should have them.If you plug keyboard back into first USB port, will it work?It should work after you clean it, compressed AIR should work as well.
Keyboards shouldn't stop working unless something bad had happened to them.

Oh yest they do! They pooch out just like any other piece of electronic hardware. When troubleshooting a faulty keyboard, the first thing you should always do is try a different keyboard on your computer and try the troublesome keyboard on a different computer. This will help determine where the problem lies. If you can test this for us, post back with your results.

Solve : Boot Problem XP PRO 250GB, Storage Problem?

Answer»

(I have also made RTHIS post in the microsoft windows section of this form as it relates to two problems)
Hey this is my first post to this site so please feel free to nag more info out of me if i DONT put enough on
My XP Pro recently got a 250 gb Seagate internal hard drive installed into it, yet it takes around 10 to 15 minutes for it to boot.
So i decided in the end to have it as a secondary hard drive and have my 80 gb hard drive as a PRIMARY. yet when my 250 gb reaches over 91.9 gb full, it will not load anymore data, instead crash and say that i have lost all data that i was moving.
If anyone knows whats wrong or even advice, it will be well appreciated.
Thanks in advance.sounds LIKE a dying harddrive. you should seek a replacement, or take advantage of seagates warranty if it is less than 5 years old.Test the hard drive with Seagate's diagnostics TOOL Seatools.

Solve : 4GB PC-6400 shows 2.75 GB?

Answer»

Hello, I have a NEW BUILD, I have a EVGA nForce 780i MOTHERBOARD with 4 GB ram (Two Corsair 2GB DDR2-800 modules) in MS Vista. It only shows that I have 2.75 GB when I go to the window that shows the hardware configs. How can I check to make sure I am accually using 4GB, or do I have a bad module. I believe I have them in the 1st and 3rd slots on the motherboard. Can someone please advise or give a solution please, thanks. Can I check my ram memory in a bios setting?? Will Vista show more than 2.75 GB of ram??You're using 32 bit Vista CORRECT?
If yes you're never going to see full use of those 4 gb of RAM.
http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251

You will need to upgrade to 64 bit Windows if you want to use the full 4 gb. But upgrading to 64 bit isn't without its own headaches.Hi, Yes, thank you very much, I am using 32 bit Vista Home Basic. The website made me feel so much better, I was thinking something was wrong. So can I ask this then, is it ever worth putting in more Ram in the future? No, not unless you switch to a 64 bit version of Windows.

Solve : memory question?

Answer»

i have a ecs gf7100pvt motherboard. im using the onboard video and was wondering why my kingston kvr800d2k2 2gigs of memory is working in single channel not dual. is it cause the onboard video is taking 256 mb of memory away from one STICK? or is it just the wrong memory for this board? will adding a separate video card allow the 2x1gig sticks to work in dual channel? Are they in the RIGHT SLOTS? On my SHUTTLE motherboard which has dual channel capability & 4 slots, I have 2 sticks in slots 1 and 3. I.e. in different CHANNELS. (The next two I buy will go in 2 and 4.) If I had put them in slots 1 & 2 dual channel would have been disabled.

So do you have 2 sticks of identical memory, not both installed on the same channel?

Solve : Mouse behaving erratically?

Answer»

Hey everyone, hope you're having a good weekend

Every so often, my MOUSE pointer will suddenly zoom around the screen in completely random patterns. It lasts for only a second or two, but it's becomming very annoying.

The mouse says 'Microsoft basic optical 1.0A' at the bottom if that's any help?

(well, it's WRITTEN on the bottom - If the mouse said it, that would be quite scarey)

Can someone help me with this scarey mouse with a mind of it's own please?

Thanks in advance...

Wireless or wired?
Do you have drivers installed for it or are you using the default Windows mouse driver?Sorry Deerpark, wired & default.

Also, I noticed I have 2 entries for a 'HID-compliant mouse' under hardware, is this right? (for 1 mouse!)No it doesn't.... unless it's laptop.
You can uninstall the two mice detected in the device manager and reboot to see if Windows REINSTALL "two" mice.Yeah why not, let's have some fun!

Solve : Non functioning USB ports?

Answer»

Hope hands are not in the air in defeat on this one. Is someone waiting for more info from me before further input? truenorthTwo things you can try and one to remember:
1)Unofficial Service Pak for Win98 SE

NOTE: you must be running the SE version of Win98 for this...Make sure to do backups of important data first.

2) Each USB device you try needs drivers for Win98...there is no one cure-all. So if the device has no Win98 driver your outta luck.

3) You can also try re-installing the motherboard drivers before you try the SP listed above...it won't hurt.Patio, Thank you. I did VERIFY that it is for certain Win98SE by comparing it on the Microsoft site with the code for my O/S. I think i shall try and do the motherboard drivers method 1st. I will use Everest to hopefully determine the Mo/Bo. I shall then endeavor to try and find the drivers for it on line.Just as an observation. This computer did come with 98SE as the installed O/S and the USB ports are also "onboard" as opposed to later added. So i do find it strange that USB ports would have been a part of the MFG. and be so hard to utilize. I do realize that many new devices have been created that use USB that did not exist at the time this computer was built and that each generation of O/S and indeed computer has limitations backwards. IE: apparently it is getting harder to find new computer that have installed floppy drives (even finding the floppies has become harder).I will keep you posted as things progress. It may be a few days.I cannot logically understand how it was that reinstalling WI98SE over the existing O/S seemed to advance things whereas when asked to provide the exact same disk when trying to use a USB device did not advance anything. I find that very weird. truenorthPatio and others, well i have finally had some time to try and advance this issue. Patio specifically to answer your question re the motherboard. It is an ASUS P5A http://www.hardwarezone.com/reviews/MB/p5a/p5a.htm#bad (this is some info on it). Other info that may be applicable. The "C" drive which obviously contains the O/S is from another computer (An HP 8550c i believe).Where as the actual computer it now resides in (with it's ORIGINAL M/B) is a "Revtek by Compuzone Inc. S/N 001463.I tried (by pausing) the memory count dos start up page and report the following 1. Award Modular BIOS V4.51PG, 2.ASUS P5A ACPI BIOS revision 1007.A ,3.AMD-K6-2/400 Processor ,4. O/S MS W98SE 4.10.2222A ,5. M/B Resources properties = Driver =Provider =MSA Date= 4-23-1999 ,6."No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device".
Now to USB devices observations current to today. 1. A Trend Net "TEW-424UB " wireless router when installed in one of the 2 available USB ports (after win98SE drivers installed from Mgr. provided CD) is flashing. There is activity on the "configuration" window on the graph at the bottom of the window. Extremely little but some. However all my attempts to connect to MS explorer or MS outlook express are unsuccessful. Cannot connect to site. When i look under internet options at the available internet connections options (device type) there are 3 56k modems and nothing else. On the task bar there is an icon resembling 4 vertical green bars of different heights and they are lit and when putting the mouse on top of the icon the following appears "WLAN Connect to: default". Now without any way to connect to anything i am suspecting that the USB wireless router is actually functioning (but maybe not correctly). Do you agree? I have tried (using the other USB port) to install an "Emprex usb 2.0 1 GB flash drive. It illuminates and "new hardware"(identifies as a "mass storage usb device) is FOUND. It wants drivers. None came with the drive.A search on the Emprex site--what a frustration that is--not only did not find drivers but COULD not even locate the drive in their product line.Tried many google searches without satisfaction and many comments about non replies from the Mgr.(i have sent one though--not holding out much hope there). Anyway i hope this adds to the knowledge needed to advance this issue and not to the confusion.truenorth
P.S. Patio do you see anything on this page that looks like what i should download re above? http://drivers.softpedia.com/progSearch
P.S. P.S. Or this one? http://www.filesearching.com/cgi-bin/s?q=al5i107a.zip&l=en
Update: Things are happening so fast that it is hard to keep up. Short update=i am now connected to the internet via the Trend -Net usb wireless router (this update is being generated to the post from it). Now how you ask has this happened/ Short answer i don't really know. I still cannot access my Outlook Express (even though the ISP is properly identified). However i CAN ACCESS al web pages either directly through Internet Explorer or via indirect links such as "Musicmatch" online help. I was able to update my "flash player" So other than the "Outlook Express" problem plus the "Flash drives" i would venture to say that i now have functioning USB ports on this Revtek computer.

Solve : Computer CPU/Processor Dies?

Answer»

Dear CH,

The COMPUTER details are indicated in the picture:

The Problem is when I try to reboot my computer out of sleep mode. There are 5 little icons on the bottom of a Satellite computer, one meaning plugged in, one meaning on, one meaning using battery, one that FLASHES, the CPU and SD Card light. But when I turn my computer back on from sleep mode, the screen comes up as soon as I log in then I see my desktop or whatever programs I was running but cannot navigate, it seems as If it is frozen. I look down to see that the CPU light isn't lit up, not even flashing.

NOTE: This doesn't happen every time, only occasionally. That's why I can write this but I don't see why it does it.

But If I hold down the power button and then reboot my computer (completely) it works. If you need any more details please tell me, but I don't know what this means. It is a brand new laptop so I don't know why it would behave in such a way?

Look forward to the info. Can't see the picture, but it sounds like it is not coming out of suspend/hibernate properly.

Perhaps you could type the make & model & what OS you are using?

Maybe you should return it as faulty. When I reboot out of sleep mode I USE the Power Button. The Power button does not shut down the computer only into sleep mode. I didn't do a Disk Cleanup prior to this, meaning I didn't accidentally delete hibernation files.

It isn't faulty because I have two of these computers and it happens on the other one too. I have Vista Home Premium and a TOSHIBA A200/H01Known problem with these models. Even worse with Linux! Try suspend instead of hibernate?
K, thanks will do. But How do I suspend? Some times this is refured to as STAND by.

Solve : All purpose printer?

Answer»

We are moving our offices to two different states. Looking into purchasing one or two all purpose printers. The printers we need should be able to print, copy, scan and FAX documents such as bank statements, gov't forms, etc. Scanning these documents and then emailing them is of prime importance. Cost not a major factor, as we can allocate about $500.00 per printer. Any suggestions as to this type of new printer? Our computers are DELL Inspirons with Vista Home Basic OS's.

PeterIt's really hard question with all that variety out there.
I can only say, that I'm Epson GUY. I had number of their machines, never had a single problem. Are you looking for a LASER or inkjet printer?Quote

we can allocate about $500.00 per printer.
So, is $500 or close to it what you're thinking of spending? With so many models on the market, narrowing the price range would be helpful. You can find some All-in-One units for $150 or less. A laserjet is a must and let's say in the $400-$500 range would be great. The scanning part is very important as I would like to be able to scan a document and email it without too much converting to certain formats and then just click and send. I realize there is an endless supply of similar all-purpose printers but I thought SOMEONE out here might have one they are totally satisfied with.

Solve : Keyboard/Windows does not start.?

Answer»

I started my PC and the only that happens is I get the Gateway logo and "F2". I tried pressing F2 and NOTHING would happen. In fact the keyboard doesn't WORK at all.

I was thinking it might be the mother BOARD but since I don't have that much COMPUTER knowledge I could really be wrong. It might be the keyboard.
Try swapping it out with another one.

If that doesn't work we will need more INFO on the computer.
Give us the model number of that Gateway and tell us more about when this problem started.

Solve : Hard drive interfaces?

Answer»

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my wife's Toshiba Tecra A3 HDD. She has an IDE interface. I believe that means I can use an ATA, ATAP, EIDE, IDE or PATA interface drive to replace the existing drive. Is that correct? Yes, I THINK so. Your limitation is that you can't use SATA DRIVES.Thanx for the reply. There is information in the knowledge base but it does not specifically state which interfaces you can use if your interface says IDE.The best PLACE to determine what drive that machine will take WOULD be Toshiba's website...you don't have to BUY one of their drives neccessarily but that's where i'd start...

All of the designations you mentioned are a bunch of ways of saying the same thing...my guess is she needs an ATA/IDE 2.5" laptop hard drive...the size/capacity limitation is determined by the machine

These are jumper settings. There so the pc can boot. It should explain in the manual where to put them. Check the manual cause some of these mite not be used.

they are not jumpers, they are headers.

this is a jumper.

these are headers.

thanks for replying. the manual for the motherboard shows a picture of the headers that i need to ATTACH the wires from the case to but the wires from my case are labeled DIFFERENT then what the motherboad has in the manual. It seems your guesses in your 2nd last post sound correct to me...thanks for replying i hooked them up the way i thought and it works on error or red lights. the problem i am having now is when i boot t get as far as the windows LOADING screen and the it restarts. so i tried to reinstall windows xp and after the cd loads i get a blue screen saying that the hard drive might be corrupt.did you format the harddrive before ATTEMPTING to install windows? Thanks to everyone that HELPED me with my many problems. Solve : disobedient keyboard!?

i was typing away on my keyboard tonight when suddenly various keys just STOPPED WORKING mid-type. (I apologise if i am repeating some previous post - I looked but may have missed something.)

as far as i can see, the keys that have stopped working are: backspace, right bracket, left bracket, the y and t keys (have been using CHARACTER map when t or y is needed), sometimes the o, also the tab, caps LOCK and left shift keys.

this is a dell c610 latitude, so is a laptop. genius that i am, i am guessing my keyboard is going bad. anyone care to confirm or refute that assessment?

thanks in advance for any help u can give. Well, STRANGELY the computer has "righted" itself, so I have no idea what happened there...operating system hiccup i guess?Gremlins...

Solve : SCSI HDD?

Answer»

I want to update my harddrive to a faster 10,000 or 15,000RPM.
From what I can tell most or all of these HDDs are SCSI. I know nothing about them. Is my current motherboard compatible? What pin connecters should I have? I saw these interfaces: SATA 3.0 Gb/s, Ultra 320 SCSI, Serial ATA150 and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). What do those interfaces mean? I know I currently have a SATA 3.0. This is the link to the motherboard i have: http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=148&l4=0&model=375&modelmenu=2

COMPUTER info:
MB: ASUS A8N_SLI Deluxe
OP SYS: Windows XP Home SP2 (UPGRADING to Professional soon)
Current HD: WD2500KS 7200rpm
Western Digital Raptor hdds are 10000 RPM SATA drives.
Honestly I would go for a couple of those instead of bothering with SCSI.

I you want SCSI you will NEED to buy a add-on SCSI controller card because your mobo doesn't have any SCSI controllers.SCSI are mainly for commercial USE in servers. if you really want a faster RPM harddrive, i would go for a raptor. What are your specific needs and why do you want them to spin so fast ? ?
You may be pissin away money you don't need to
