Solve : Cannot Open C Drive?

Just some clarification... is it your "C:" drive (Hard DISK Drive, or HDD) that you can't access or is it you CD drive? Also, it was asked earlier if you clicked on "Eject CD", but I didn't see any answer. If it is the CD drive, did you try this?Quote from: harty001 on MAY 31, 2007, 11:07:22 AM

Tara, if you really mean your C:\ drive, you are quite sure there is no autorun.inf file in your C:\ folder? It may be hidden. This problem sounds just like that is the reason.

open a command window & type

cd c:\

and then do

dir

and then

dir /ah

and see if there is one there.

when I type the dir and then the dir/ah I do see a autorun.inf file. I typed del autorun.inf, but it won't delete. How do I remove it.

Thanks so much.Quote from: tara0801 on June 01, 2007, 08:45:25 PM

If it shows up with dir /ah then it is a "hidden" file. You need to unhide it before it can be deleted.

Here is how...

open a command window & type

cd c:\

and then do

attrib autorun.inf -H

At this stage a plain

dir autorun.inf command should show it up

and then

del autorun.inf to get rid of it

That should do it...

hello again.
when i dir /ah, i see an AutoRun.inf file
when I type attrib AutoRun.inf -H
is says not resetting system file

It does not let me delete it either.

What do you think? Any other way of deleting.

Thanks.Quote from: tara0801 on June 02, 2007, 01:34:45 PM
when I type attrib AutoRun.inf -H
is says not resetting system file

Sorry that's my fault I should have thought it might be marked as a system file.

type

C:\

then

attrib autorun.inf

you'll see something like this, maybe not all of these letters. You should definitely see an S, and maybe an H and an R at the left side.

A SHR C:\autorun.inf

If you see an S to the left type

attrib -S autorun.inf

then if you see an H type

attrib -H autorun.inf

and if you see an R type

attrib -R autorun.inf

The A does not matter if it is there. Remove it by the same method if you feel like it.

now if you do this

attrib autorun.inf

the letters apart from the A should have gone, and this should now WORK.

del autorun.inf

If all this doesn't work, try it in safe mode (where you press f8 as the PC starts up)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It works. I can now open my C drive thru My computer. You all have been a big help. I couldn't have done this without everyone's help.Always nice to have a success. Good work, team.

Solve : Video card that is dual core compatible??

Answer»

Ok, so I want to add another video card to my computer so I can have a dual monitor configuration. My computer is dual core, so does that mean I need a dual core compatible video card?

Computer Specs:
-Dell Dimension E521
-Dual AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ 1.90 GHz
-958 MB RAM
-Windows VISTA Home Premium 32-bit
-NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE video card

Thanx

EDIT:
Ok, I found a supported HARDWARE wizard on AMD's site. I did it and found that Radeon graphics CARDS are supported on AMD processors (Offcourse), but does that mean all AMD processors can support Radeon or some? (Such as dual core) Here are the results of the wizard.what you need is to make sure that the video card you get has dual ( DVI-connections) thats it*

your going off base with the dual core compatible issues.............

Like honvetops SAYS, there are no compatibly issues between graphics cards an dual core processors. If you can plug it in, it's compatible.Well, what about graphics cards that need a processing speed of 2.4 GHz or faster? Then compatibility becomes a factor right? If this is true, I need to get a graphics card that can run at my processors speed, right?Your CPU is equivalent to faster than 2.4GHz, don't worry about it.
2.4GHz refers to the equivalent P4 speed.

As honvetops said you just need a card with dual DVI connectors for dual monitors (assuming your monitor uses DVI). Then you can disable the onboard video. The only thing you need to worry about when dealing with dual core cpus is your motherboard. once you have a motherboard that is compatible with a dual core cpu, your good to go. with other hard ware there are programs that allow you to use dual video cards ATI has Crossfire and nvidia has SLI, but dont confuse that with dual displays even though they allow you run dual video cards you have both cards working on 1 display. you dont plug a monitor into each card. it still works like 1 GPU. it is for preformance of 1 not running 2 displays. like some one said earlier make sure your video card has has a place to plug 2 monitors into it

Something "simple" PLUG & playaccording to the Boston acoustic website you only need to make sure you have a digital sound card , check the site and you'll find a link to the creative website , hope this helps . you don't need a sound card with USB outputs , if there is even such a thingIf they are USB speakers, they will have their own sound card.

Solve : Unexplainable problem?

Answer»

Ok i was playing video games on my dell computer and then it froze so i turned it off and back on by holding the button down, it booted up as USUAL, but when it got to the part where the bios go to windows it says "The following file Windows/system/system32/config is missing or corrupt" and i booted from my CD drive with a windows cd, when i did this it says " no boot device available " and its not the drive because i tried my working drive, and ive tried multiple cables, and there dont seem to be any problems with the connections, its an IDE drive and the HDD is SATA. is there any way i can get it working and reinstall windows? PLEASE say yes...about the drive, did you change you first boot drive in BIOS to cd-rom?
this type of corruption are not cause by any cables,it's the windows inside.the file already corrupted.did you install any type anti virus/spy ware?
this article MIGHT help
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/
Didnt help... i could fix it but the cd drive isnt being read so it wont boot from it, same with a thumbdrive etc. Yes the CD drive was first in the list hmm,try the drive on safe mode.just MAKE sure it can read.i was wondering if your drive just have problem with the lens or etc.like mine years ago,i thought it was perfect because got power & spin inside it but not read it
try to boot the windows disc from the bios, not from the windows ok?
i mean by pressing f9 (i guess). Its not the drive itself iv tried two drives, its like theres something wrong with the data that goes through. and the entire TIME ive been trying to boot from bios it doesnt even go to windowsThe system cannot start up because there is no operating system for it to load. The boot process will halt here. Some systems may give you the option to retry the boot or to enter setup at this point, as a convenience. Otherwise, you must reboot the PC.

All of the bootable drives in the system are not functioning. Normally this means that the floppy disk drive is either absent or not functioning, or has no disk in it, and the hard disk is either not connected or has no bootable active partition on it.

But in your case you say everything is conected try -

Solve : Need help with a dicision... Graphics Card?

Answer»

Hi, I am in need with a suggestion/idea about the two cards that I am thinking to buy for my brother's PC. Recently I upgraded his motherboard from an Intel D845GVSR to an ASRock P4VM890 with a PCIe, so I am wondering which card should I get? Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT or the 7600 GT? and yes I know that the 7600 GT is ALOT better then the 7300 GT, but he mainly plays Guild Wars and sometimes Counter-Strike SOURCE. Any ideas?

P.S. Money is also the problem too... depends if he has alot of ram, and what operating system he has.

If he has lots of ram with vista then you should get the most powerful card you can afford.

However if he has xp and just 512 of ram I wouldnt sweat on getting to much of a expensive card becuase it wouldnt be used to its full potential anyway. And you mentioned he only play css and GW, which both cards will run cleanly. So if you DONT think he will get started into any new games and wont have much use for the extra power, then why spend the exra money?

Good luck and hope this helps

His computer specs are the FALLOWING:
- Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz
- 1GB DDR PC2700 333MHz RAM
- Windows XP Home
- Intergrated VIA 2D/3D Graphics

Also, there is a card from ATI (X1650 PRO) for the same cost as the 7300 GT!!! WOW!!! this looks like an amazing deal, but it is weaker then the 7600 GT, so I am thinking to get the X1650 thats enough specs for any one of those cards, if hes GOING to use it alot get the more expensive one, if not get the cheaper one. Look at the GPU FAQ (FAQ section - Hardware - Choosing a GPU) which contains all the information you are likely to need about graphics cards except for the newest models.
What's your budget?

Solve : I need a Microphone Expert?

Answer»

Hey all.

I play WoW, thus, I need a mic for raiding. As many other guilds, we USE Ventrilo. And, being a Guild Officer, I have to be able to communicate. That is my story..

My mic, for some reason, isn't picking up any sound that I speak.

However, if I hold my push-to-talk button while someone else is talking, THEY and everyone else in the channel can hear whoever is talking. My mic only sends sound that's coming through my headset, but not what I'm trying to say into it.

I've been through the vent settings, and my Windows XP settings.

Can ANYONE help?A little more info please.

Is this a mic that has worked and is now not working or is it a newly set up one you can't get to work?

Sorry.

This is a mic that has been working for about a month.

And it was working two hours before it wouldn't work anymore. My car worked for about 12 years before it stopped working...
Try the mike on another machine...if it works in another machine then it's not the mike.
If it doesn't it's the mike...

Double check all your settings in Control Panel.Sounds and Multimedia.or you plug it in-correct port.... Quote from: patio on September 13, 2007, 08:31:10 PM

When you've been a member 3 years plus like Patio and me you'll have the hang of it.

You can beat my post count but not my length of service. Yes I would perhaps check that "Mic" is not muted under the volume mixer and I believe the reason everyone can hear your other sounds because you have the "Stereo/Mono Mix" selected under your recording mixer (Volume control -> OPTIONS -> Properties -> Recording)

Solve : Computer Wont Boot Hard Drive?

Answer»

Dear friends,

i recently POSTED about an old pentium II motherboard. But today i received a newer socket 370 Pentium III motherboard and transfered all of my old COMPONENTS over to it. however it did come with a ATI video card. after i hooked every thing up i turned it on it refused to show any graphics. i then tried to swap out the ATI for an older compaq video card but still nothing,

thanks for the help

Specs of computer:

im not sure about the mother board thought, ill try to find out and post itsound's like you need to hookup to the original video output and go into the bios and deactivate the on board video and enable the ati video card you should be able to view a SCREEN from the motherboard video out putok, i fixed that but now when the BIOS comes uo its says "A Disk Read Error Occured" and its a brand new maxtor 120 Gb With Win XP installed. Please Help!

I also got more info its an "Award Modular BIOS v4.51pg" and the motherboard is socket 370 with the letters VIA on it.

Thanks

If XP was not installed on that Maxtor with the current MBoard you have switched to the chances of a successful boot are slim...XP is not hot-swappable from machine to machine...

It will struggle with 128M of RAM as well.It will continue to struggle unless you have a real XP CD that says "Microsoft" all over it that is not registered on another PC.I talked to microsoft and they said for me to manualy go through all the boot files and reinstall them, insted i just wiped the hard drive and started from scratch. Since its a regested upgrade copy i just had the service code changed due to the situation.

Thanks For all the helpNow win xp stalls at 41% at the WINDVD file.

Any suggestions?

Solve : battery for acer laptop Aspire 5000?

Answer»

My question is how to maximize the battery's life. I've heard there are six types of battery, but have no idea which type that of acer laptop Aspire 5000 is. I was also TOLD not to charge battery when the computer is in use, but only charge it when it is not in use and the power in it is low.

Then someone else said that it depends on which type the battery is. I also like to know that when the computer is not in use, which condition, standby or turnoff, is better for the computer.

Thanks in advance for information.how?i guess you only can use the power MANAGEMENT in windows?there are, minimal, home, max battery & etc (something written like that).i don't know about acer battery but yeah, think they sold it.why don't try at acer website?
http://global.acer.com/
yeah, charge only when you don't use the laptop.it can reduce the recycle life of the battery.make sure to defrag your HDD because it can make your HDD spin not too much so this can make the battery life longer.
better turn the laptop off because this are the best WAY to SAVE the battery life,REMEMBER you are notebook not a desktop.

Solve : perplexing computer noise?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. My question is: EVERY time I start my computer, at about the exact same time each time, (5 and 1/2 to 6 minutes into the session), my computer makes ONE high pitched squeal that lasts only for a second. Noise is so short lived I can't determine exact location but it is coming from CPU, not speakers. It sounds like something spinning at a very high rate of speed but again it happens so quickly that I cannot really determine. Computer runs perfectly otherwise. It is only 6 MONTHS OLD. Dell Dimension E510, running XP media edition. Can provide any other information you might need, but am most concerned that it is a hard drive issue. I have gone around and around with Dell via email but they have me tearing the whole computer apart and running voluminous diagnostics. I am going to die of old age before THEY solve the problem. Can anyone help? Thank you. DLFIt COULD be a built in MOTHERBOARD speaker to alert you of someting, check if the CMOS battery is dead if so it could be a low CMOS battery warning. if not it could be a heat sensitive fan that squealed when your processor HITS a certain temperature.

Solve : laptop troubles?

i have an HP laptop with windows XP, service pack 2.0 and just recently i have a purple vertical line on the right side of my screen and also a yellow line that runs from top to bottom and will not go away. thank you for any help that you can give me. mikewas it an application?did you install anything?what is the OS ?
no i have not installed anything. the line just appeared while i was online and after rebooting it was still there. and now i have another line on my screen but this one if flickering on and off.os stand for "operating system" like windows 98, windows xp, windows vista and so on.can you describe what are the vertical line are?is it from system configuration?application?of its your monitor faulty?he said the OS in the HEADER sentence. it just randomly appear or a bluescreen WITHOUT the blue. have you run a virus scan, if not do it. download and run Hijackthis (google it) and post the log here. This is most likely a hardware related issue and not an infection...

However, it wouldn't hurt to make sure your malware protection is updated...boot into Safe Mode and run a full system scan...for more information check out the following guide:

Malware Guide

The above guide will help you diagnose your system for an infection. It will also give you links to download and run the some free malware protection software, as well as HiJack This.

You might also want to check your device manager to see if your video card is functioning properly.

Solve : Help Please: My brand new PC restarts without warning?

Answer»

Please help me. I bought a new PC with Intel Core 2 E6420 2.13 GHz Processor and Intel 946-GZ motherboard, RAM 667MHz 2x1GB, And PCI-E ATI Sapphire X550 128MB Graphics Card. (O/S Windows XP SP-2). I tried to play Rise of the Nations: Thrones and Patriot, Sims 2: Nightlife, and Resident EVIL 4 in it. The games start fine, but as the play progresses, some problems arise. Either, the game will stop, and Windows will say that it is generating 'a list of exceptions' and then the infamous error reporting dialogue box. Or the COMPUTER will simply restart without any warning. After restarting, a Message box appears that the Windows has recovered from a serious error. This happens only in complex situations, I.E, at rise of the nations, this happens at the peak of a battle, etc.

Can any one please help me?Did you buy it assembled from a dealer, because that's what I understand from "bought a new PC", or did you actually buy a bunch of parts and put them together yourself? The difference is IMPORTANT, because if you bought the PC complete, you should be contacting the supplier under WARRANTY, and messing about inside, especially if you don't know what you're doing, is going to be a bad idea.

You do not say what kind of PSU the PC has. I would be looking at PSU, motherboard, RAM, CPU overheating, in fact a whole lot of things.

I would be taking advantage of the warranty...trying to fix it yourself may void the warranty.he "still wants to know what's wrong". OK, RollingEE, it's your gizmoid oscillator. It needs retuning. Can't be done at home. Needs a $50,000 rig to do it properly. Claim on the warranty.

Best to bring it back to your supplier or manufacturer and have the game played there so they will understand what's wrong with your pc. From the way i see it, it might be memory problem. Quote from: superman777 on June 03, 2007, 11:04:37 PM

Solve : SATA HDD Problem?

Answer»

My HDD has pretty much died so I bought a new one.

My motherboard supports SATA so I bought a SATA HDD.

I thought it would just be a case of plugging in the new drive and then doing a clean install of XP but it's not working like that.

When XP set up gets to the part where the drive is selected the XP set up doesn't see the new drive.

I have installed the SATA stuff from the motherboard set up disk and I have fdisk'd and formatted the new drive with NTFS but XP still wont see it.

I re-connected my old drive and when I go to My Computer the new drive is there and I can move files in and out of it.

However, the XP set up wont see it at all.

A couple of things that I did notice were:

1. In the BIOS set up the selection for SATA/RAID/SCSI is grayed out and

2. In the properties of the drive it is described as a SCSI drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Davva strange, so the OS is reading the drive as SCSI, but BIOS isn't reading it at all?

I'll bump this for a real expert.

when you install the xp, did you connect the old HDD?
have you make the new HDD as a master?
did the bios see the HDD.my first INSTINCT was to check the jumpers. Is the old drive still connected??

are both drives currently connected?
Thanks for the replies.

Initially I had the old HDD connected but when I couldn't see the new one I tried disconnecting the old one so only the new HDD was connected.

SATA drives don't have master/slave jumpers.

I have connected the the old one back up and gone into Disk management. The new drive is showing there as a NTFS drive on D: and is healthy and active. The properties still list it as a SCSI.

When I disconnect the old drive and start to load XP there are still no disks listed when it gets to the bit where you select the drive.

I looked in the BIOS and the new drive is not listed in the IDE drives but I'm not SURE that it should be. Will it still be listed even though it's a SATA drive?

During boot, the IDE search shows only my DVD player as secondary master. Then it checks the RAID and the new drive shows there.

I'm confused.

YES.....it didn't make any difference.
Very early on in the XP setup process you will see a prompt at the bottom of the screnn that states if you are installing RAID or SATA drives press F6 now...at that point insert your SATA driver disk.Quote from: patio on September 13, 2007, 08:38:01 PM

Thanks Patio, you were exactly right.

I didn't get a disk with my drive but it occurred to me that I may need extra drivers despite the fact that disk manager could see the drive.

I DL'd the drivers from the mobo site and stuck them on a floppy. Then, as you said, hit F6 and told XP to expect 3rd party drivers.

Now to re-install a gazillion PROGRAMS....

Thanks to all that replied.

Solve : External HDD problem?

Answer»

I just got a new external hdd to store some of my things but the installation isn't going very well.

When I first connected the USB to my computer, it started to add the hardware but then I got a MESSAGE saying something like "Problem installing the harware. The device may not work properly"

I've tried reconnecting and nothing happens.

It's an I/O Magic Gigabank and my laptop is an Inspiron 600m. I checked and they are compatible...

I just need more information than some message saying there was a problem :/

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. What OS are you running?

Sometimes external hard drives have a button on them that takes drivers and is not automatically installed. It could just be a button driver missing in which case your drive will work and FUNCTION with no problems. See if it shows up under disk management and post back.Quote from: GuruGary on May 26, 2007, 01:07:47 AM

Nah, no luck. It doesn't show up under disk management ;_;I have never been impressed with ANY product from IO magic.

Try the drive on another computer first. It may be a hardware problem that you will never overcome.

Is this a drive powered from the USB port or does it have it's own power supply? Does the laptop have USB 1.1 or 2? Have you tried a different port?Quote from: GX1_Man on May 26, 2007, 06:12:02 AM

Hmmm. Yeah I've read some reviews of their products and there seem to be a lot of complaints about them. No manual or anything came with it...I guess it's supposed to be "simple to use" ...but if it isn't, then it's a pain.

It has it's own power supply, my USB is a 2.0 and yeah, I've tried a different port.

I would try it on another computer but it'd TAKE a day or two...b/c I only have the laptop...and I'd need to talk to some of my friends about it.We'll leave the light on. I'd consider returning it for a full refund. Then use the money to buy an IDE HDD and an external powered enclosure...you'll probably save money and always have the option of installing it internally down the road...HEY thanks guys. I ended up returning it and I was just about to ask what kinds of hdd's you'd suggest.

I'll definitely look into the IDE option. Does anyone have an external that has been really reliable?Just remember that ALL hard drives die eventually and are not the safe place to store the only copy of important data.

External drives have 1 year warranties. A Seagate internal drive in a case, as Patio suggested, has a 5 year warranty.

Solve : wireless keyboard and mouse???

Answer»

hey guys i just brought a new keyboard and mouse which runs by usb to replace my old ps/2 ones. but when i plugged it in and installed the drivers and rebooted they still wont work. wat am i doing wrong??? the brand is laserhave you PUT batteries in them? My wireless keyboard and mouse use AA cells. You probably need to use the old PS/2 keyboard and then go into the BIOS and enable USB keyboard and legacy USB support.

Always keep a PS/2 keyboard you never know when you may need
to access that BIOS.ok done all that and it worked FINE. untill i shutdown. now only the keyboard works but the mouse now wont. the batteries are charged up tho, i dont understand one minute it was working and the next it's stopped. wat happened???Click a button. MAYBE it has gone into power saving mode. Wireless mice go to sleep to save the batteries which run down fast, much faster than the ones in the keyboard. My el-cheapo Trust wireless "DESK set" has this really annoying mouse that hibernates after about 30 secs of inactivity, and you have to click a button to wake it up. It came with 2 NiMH rechargeable AA cells and a power/charging wire that plugs into the wireless "base station" but even in this mode it goes to sleep. It is a pain in the @ss. Also it is ugly and looks stupid on the desk. I hate it and I went back to my USB mouse with a wire on it and I just use the keyboard, which I really like, in which the batteries last about 6 months. ive already tried that and still nothing even it happened as soon as the windows login came up i tried my mouse and nothing. so i redid the connect thing and still nuffin???If you gave US the maker and model, we could go to the maker's web site and read the troubleshooting hints, since you seem unable to do that yourself?

Solve : Parallel Cardbus Pc Card - Newlink - How do I get it in EPP mode??

Answer»

Hi, How do I put this card in EPP mode? It doesn't show up in the BIOS but seems to work fine in windows.

Please help.I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you can't configure a cardbus card in the BIOS. The BIOS can only configure the motherboard.
You will have to set it up in windows. Did it come with any kind of utility? (Maybe on a disc that came with the card.)Unfortunately no utility is provided. You don't know of any utility programs I COULD TRY with this card?

If you could post a LINK that would be great

ThanksSorry haven't been able to find anything.
I checked what I assume is the homepage for the company but couldn't even find your product listed. So I guess they don't offer support for it anymore but you could try contacting them and see if they're wiling to help you.

I do. OK?

DVD-R and DVD-RW

DVD-R and DVD-RW are also both formats of the DVD Forum. Both formats generally use 4.7 GB discs, although some professional DVD-R drives use 3.95 GB discs.

DVD-R is a write-once recordable format which allows excellent compatibility with both standalone DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. There are two main types of DVD-R discs: DVD-R for General Use and DVD-R for Authoring. Most consumer DVD-R burners use the cheaper General Use discs, while some professional burners use Authoring discs. The correct media type appropriate for the recorder must be used when burning a DVD-R. However, once written, the discs should be readable in either drive type. (General Use DVD-R is designed to prevent backup of encrypted commercial DVDs.)

DVD-RW media uses rewriteable discs which are rated for more than 1000 rewrites in ideal situations. The majority of standalone DVD players will play video recorded on DVD-RW discs, but the compatibility is not as high as with DVD-R.

Current DVD-RW recorders also RECORD to DVD-R. However, the reverse was not always true. Some older DVD-R recorders were not capable of writing to DVD-RW discs (although some were able to read DVD-RW discs burned with other drives).

DVD-RW and DVD-R have heavy penetration into the professional multimedia market as well as the general consumer market. For instance, the Apple SuperDrive, found in many pro and consumer Mac computers, is simply a DVD-R/DVD-RW (and CD-R/CD-RW) capable burner.

DVD+R and DVD+RW

These two formats are backed by the DVD+RW Alliance. While these formats are not supported by the DVD Forum, several members of the DVD+RW Alliance are also members of the DVD Forum. These discs are very similar to DVD-R and DVD-RW in design, usage, and compatibility.

DVD+RW, like DVD-RW, is a rewriteable 4.7 GB format, and overall it has similar functionality to DVD-RW. The level of compatibility of standard DVD+RW discs in standalone DVD players is similar to that of DVD-RW. The rewritability of DVD+RW is also said to be similar to that of DVD-RW, allowing up to 1000 rewrites.

One potential advantage of the DVD+RW format is Mount Rainier (DVD+MRW) drag-and-drop file access support planned for Longhorn, a future version of Windows slated for release in 2005. Older DVD+RW drives do not support this function, but newer drives may. While DVD+MRW is arguably not as robust a data solution as DVD-RAM, DVD+MRW potentially will offer higher read compatibility in current DVD-ROM drives.

DVD+R is a format that was introduced to consumers in early 2002. The first generation +RW recorders did not support DVD+R recording, and likely cannot be upgraded to do so. However, all current models of DVD+RW recorders also support DVD+R recording. Compatibility of +R discs in standalone DVD players is similar to that of DVD-R.

Perhaps this is because more people look at the proper post.

Solve : No Power to Computer?

Hi All,

Recently i removed the HeatSink and cooling fab to clean all the crap off that had built up over the years.Left the cpu in plcae but cleaned off all the old thermal paste with an alcohol based cleaner.Replaced all the cleaned items. Now pc wont switch on.There is a small green light visible on the motherboard when it is plugged into the wall socket.
Any help and ADVICE will be appreciatedBreaking the seal is never a good idea unless you intend to replace the CPU.

You didn't use alcohol on the CPU, did you? Not a good idea.

Dumb question: Did you REAPPLY more paste?I did reapply a silicone based thermal paste to the cpu prior to replacing the Heatsink and fanDouble-check to SEE if the heatsink is seated fully...
Double check all PSU connections.
Does the CPU fan come on ? ?

Thermal Compound Instructions

Using too much is as bad as using not enough.Hi Patio,

Thermal paste was spread evenly over the cpu COVERING cpu to just short of the edges to accomadate any spreading of paste.Heat sink is properly seated. All connections clean and secureDoes the CPU fan come on ? ?Sorry Patio

WILL PAY ATTENTION in future.

Sorry no CPU fan does not come onThen all the connections are not correct and/or the PSU has gone south.
Can you borrow another one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if it's the culprit ? ?
The CPU fan connector should only go in one way...however if you forced it it may be in backward. Try reversing it as well.Hi Patio,

Here`s the thing................. ok will try to get another PSU.
After checking what you told me i got the @#$%^ with it and left it plugged into a wall socket and closed it up.About an hour or so later i walked past the thing and noticed that it had started up.Fan was RUNNING side extractor fan was running. Will unplug it and set it up properly and see what happens. This is so wierd. Can you think of why it would just start up after so long without anyone trying to switch it on or off

Solve : Hey guys, your help would GREATLYYYYYY be APPRECIATED / RESOLVED?

I just bought a new HD namely a Barracuda 160 GB SATA Drive, and I cannot install Windows XP Professional on it. It says something like, "Setup was unable to locate such a drive with the required amount of free space." I have gone to BIOS setup and changed it to boot from CD but no luck. I have also tried INSTALLING Windows 98, here's the thing though, it'll install Windows 98 but only by creating a partition for a FAT32 and for some reason I'm thinking that my new HD is NTFS already. When it created the partition it only created a maximum partition of 8gb/160gb...which leaves quite an AMOUNT of UNUSED space. Another thing is format is not supported when the partition is deleted off the HD....so right now I'm back at the drawing board trying to install windows without the 8gb partition and the limitation of space. Please your help would beeeeeee greatttllyyy apppreciaaateeeed Use the Seatools from Seagate to prepare the drive for an install...this includes setting partitions if you want them and formatting them to be ready to use...
They are on the CD that CAME with the drive if you didn't get one DLoad them and follow the instructions on making a boot CD.

Brand new drives are shipped un-formatted. They need to be formatted before Windows can see them.

This is why Win98 was able to see the drive because you created a partition and formatted it.

The instructions at Seagates site are pretty thorough so you should be good to go...

Those are nice drives by the way.I don't think Windows XP recognizes sata hard drives natively.
There should be a driver disk with the hard drive. When you boot with the xp disk, press F6 when it ASKS if you want to install any scsi drivers. (Or something to that effect) After that, just follow the installation directions.
Hey guys thanks for your help but even with all the assistance, I've still no luck. I've actually tried formatting the disc with discwizard by installing it as a primary slave HD on another computer, but again to no avail. My guess is that the solution is probably the easiest thing but I just don't get it. I think you created a large partition and are trying to format it with FAT32. Is that right? Hard drives ship new with NO partitions, so you have obviously created one. Win98 cannot see NTFS drives or use them.THat its why it is trying to install on the 8 gig. portion, which is left AFTER a drive is partitioned with Win2000 or XP.

You need to delete ALL partitions and try again. Don't worry about the extra 8 megs. You are not wasting anything. Also, use NTFS if you are looking for one big drive.
Hey guys even though it was complex to me lol, I finally got it to work with my 160gb =). I added it as a primary slave HD to my other XP system and used discwizard to format it to FAT32, then I carried it back to the other motherboard and then I installed windows 98 on the 160gb formatted HD, then I did a new installation of Windows XP, windows then proceeded to ask me to convert the drive to NTFS and I agreed to it, and now everything is running fine and all is well. The system comes up to the point where windows xp screen starts. It will then go the windows screen with startup options i.e. normal safe mode and then will go to a blue screen or it may go straight to the following blue screen Saying that windows has shut down in order to prevent damage to the computer. It goes on to say the problem might be a virus or check the hard drive for proper installation. Then run chkdsk/F. I do not know how to run this test SINCE I can’t get that far in windows. But I really doubt this is a problem since I have tried two different working disks and still get the same result.

The hard drive works perfectly well in my current computer. I also tried another hard drive which also works perfectly in my current computer. The memory is good and is recognized by the bios.

After the above failure I erased one of the drives using drive scrubber 3.0. I did this because I could not BOOT to reformat the drive even with the win xp
disk. Hence I then removed the dive from my current computer and reinstalled it in the new one and tried to boot it using winxp cd. However I received the exact same message as noted above.
Here is the tec info noted at the bottom of the blue screen mentioned in original email

Stop: 0X0000007B (C0XF7908524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000Boot to the XP CD and choose the method for a repair install of XP...XP cannot be moved from one MBoard to another without problems.I did try to boot with the win xp cd but cannot get PAST the loading of drivers before the blue screen comes up, as mentioned above, and then the computer tries to restart but with the same result. In fact I tried it with a blank hard drive as well as with one with xp already loaded.if this HELPS at all ?

I had the exact* same errors and problems installing two identical seagate 320 gig sata 16's in a Raid 0 array.

After many issues & 2 days, including installing different controllers, "my problem" was that one of the hd's was bad. The bios one day would recognize the hd off & on and the 2nd day it would not. I finally took it out and kept the one good drive in and returned the other for replacement. Everything worked great when I took out the bad drive, best of luck to you, hang in there*

Thankyou for your responce

One drive is a 320 3.0 seagate the other 160 seagate 2.0. So I will buy a new drive. I'm not sure what a controller is. I thought it was in the motherboard and therefore not changeable.

Please adviseIf you are using SATA drives, are you pressing F6 at the installation stage and installing the RAID controller (available from the mobo CD) and then configuring the RAID.Would it be easier to change the bios to IDE as my current board is set up. and If I did not would I lose any system improvements.

I guess I am not sure of what advantage RAID 0 has over IDEhonestly, I'm not quite sure on the way "you" should go.... I know from what I READ, raid o utilizes both drives as one, writes some stuff on the one drive and some more on the other... it's supposed to make your system run very fast in applications BUT, if one fails your doomed unless you have everything backed up.
If those drives are IDE compatible you might go that route...
this is only my 2nd build and I had a nightmare trying to work my problem, I couldn't even get it to take my F6 button to take my 3rd party controllers but 1 time and it still didn't work.

Solve : Ram and Video card upgrades??

Answer»

OK I have an Intel P4 2.66 currently with 1 gig of ram. Current video card is ATI 9550. I play eq and normally run 2 instances at same time. What I would like to know. I am upgrading to 2 gig's soon and would like a decent agp video card upgrade.

Or should I just bite the bullet and GO with the new dual core processors and PCI express Video cards?

My wife like the idea of upgrading VERSUS BUYING a new comp btw. ThankI cannot tell you how much faster my puter went from a pent 4 650 (1 gig) to the e6600 conroe (2 gigs) NIGHT and day... I like PCI-E , never had an ATI card... more bandwidth with pci-e Calum is are gpu wizard*
(my 2 cents) My advice is to get a new motherboard, new PCI-E graphics card, new dual core CPU and the 2Gb of RAM.
But, it depends on your budget.
If you have a BIG budget, do that, otherwise get a decent AGP card.

Solve : Computer runs audio fast and higher pitch then Blue Screen?

Answer»

I'm running a generic PC I built a few years ago with Windows 2000 PRO. I used to USE it often, hadn't turned it on in 6 months. Now when I try to play an audio file, the pitch is high and it locks up with a Blue Screen. Safe Mode and Restore don't change it, I haven't installed anything new. The Blue Screen message has something about Bios features needing to be bypassed, but I can't find a matching reference in the MOTHERBOARD set up menus. Post more info on the machine's specs and someone will be along SHORTLY...

Solve : is this a missing OS ish or a dysfunctional keyboard??

Answer»

ok i suspect the computer im trying to basically have no OS coz when you booted up both monitor and cpu it only brought up the compaq screen...
i tried to do f8 about multiple times it doesnt direct me to the BIOS....im still trying to perfect the timing on how to do f8..and somewhat by soome stroke of luck or so...i mange to pull up these windows config system where you have 7 choices like safe mode normal mode selective etc.... and then when i try to open the same screen again it doesnt pull it up....basically occassionally the keyboard's numlock or capslock would sometimes work sometimes its off...so mebbe somewhat i couldnt access the windows config system because...a. the computer sucks b. the keyboard is not working???

do i need to reinstall os? coz im only seeing compaq text LABEL on black backgroundF8 brings up the Windows Boot Option screen. It sounds like the OS is failing to boot up in a few different spots each time if you're loading boot options infrequently. Try pressing F10 to get into the Compaq's setup. Once you're in, try multiply times after that. Are you able to get into it everytime?

Gizmo73That's quite a rambling paragraph there...
Try a new keyboard first. Power down before plugging it in. Don't hit F8 this time just see if it will boot.
If not again try F8 and choose last known good configuration....if this does not work start looking for your XP CD, it will be needed to go any further.thanks a lot for that help you GUYS. one other question...do u think buying a window installlation cd would resolve the problem if for EXAMPLE a. thekeyboard is ok b. i coouldnt seemed to access the last known configuration but i suspect window installation is what is required.

the pc im working on has a gateway keyboard(basically its a ...mix and mismatch). i long to have a pc on my own eversince i work for a tech support.

btw the cpu has no cover...i think static electricity also killed it.If the machine came with XP it's silly to re-purchase the OS...
Keyboards are universal ...there is no mismatch.
The CPU is inside the case itself and they are usually not COVERED with anything but a fan...please CLARIFY this and provide more info on the machine so we can help you out of this.

p.s. Where do you work for tech support ? ?the pc isnt even mine, just found it in the house one day..decided to tweak it for a hope and a dream..*sigh*

i mean there is no cover on the outside "skin" of the cpu tower.

oh heck, i kept fancying myself as a "tech".anyway ill provide basic info the moment that i reach my home again coz im living in a dorm at this moment.

i cant give up on my hope and dream after all

anyway ill just save money and have a tech fix thsi for me

i dont know if its preequip with os coz i havent even see it operating not even once! Just found it in the house one day ? ?

There are ways to find out what's in there

Solve : PC Compaq Presario does not boot after a storm and lightning?

Answer»

My PC was left on while I was out. It is a Compaq Presario, 512 MB Ram, 60 GB hard drive and runs Windows XP/Home Editon.
Recently, when I was out, my home PC was left on. There was a storm with lightning. When I returned home, I found the computer not working - it displayed just the logo COMPAQ. I turned it off and restarted. It does not restart. The message on the screen is: Disk Error, Press any key to continue. When I press any key, it comes back with the same message.
I recently moved my home and cannot find the Recovery CD or the 3 1/2 diskette.
How can I overcome this problem?
Thanks.
aasgha.
Leaving your computer plugged in during an electrical storm is not a good idea...even if you do have surge suppressors or an UPS (Uninterrupted POWER Supply).

Though these two items can protect your computer from power surges...otherwise known as electrical SPIKES...they do not prevent damage from a direct lightning strike.

During a storm...shut down and unplug your computer from any electrical source.

My recoomendation would be to have it serviced to check for any hardware failures.

You can contact HP and order recovery CDs for your make and MODEL of Compaq.

Simply visit the following link:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph07143&lc=enJust so you are aware if you run an OEM Recovery CD on a hard drive that's acting up all your data and any programs installed after the machine purchase will be wiped out.

If you need to recover things first remove the hard drive from that machine and hook it up in a known working machine as a slave drive preferably with the same OS and see if the data is recoverable...If so copy and burn what you need to CD/DVD before attempting an OEM Restore. Thanks, patio...

I forgot to mention that. My BAD...

Solve : Trivial Mouse Problem / RESOLVED?

Answer»

My sister-in-law (who is anything but computer literate) suddenly started having problems with her mouse, in that it wouldn't respond appropriately to her clicks. She asked for help, and after some head-scratching, I realized that the mouse had become left-handed. A quick check in the Control Panel confirmed this. My SIL avers that she "never changed anything".

She is using Win98SE as her OS. I can't remember the mouse model number, unfortunately, but it's a Logitech optical mouse with a scroll wheel.

Does anyone have a thought on what could have happened to cause this?

Does anyone have a possible explanation, excluding gremlins?Someone or something changed it. Logitech mice always default to right handed unless specifically set to be left handed. My thoughts, exactly: and I'm sure you've heard in response to "What were you doing when this happened?"; "I didn't do anything, it just happened"

Believe me, we hear that a lot.

But it is true sometimes. What protection does she have?Quote from: CBMatt on May 30, 2007, 11:43:12 PM

Believe me, we hear that a lot.

But it is true sometimes. What protection does she have?

She's using Avast! for virus protection, and ZoneAlarm as her firewall. In addition I've set it up so that SPYBOT runs as a scheduled task, and she periodically runs Ad-Aware. I haven't been over to her computer recently, but when I go, I'll make sure the mouse is returned to being right-handed, and I'll check out what else may have changed.

I just wondered if anyone had some insight into what might have happened, other than the obvious answer. Sounds like PEBKAC.You may want to go ahead and scan her computer in Safe Mode after updating Avast. If she gets a clean bill of health, then soybean might be right. It's PROBABLY not gremlins. It may be that there is some fancy mouse software got installed. One program I know about, called Dmouse, you only have to press Ctrl + F12 to swap the buttons over. Quite a few others use this key combination.

My Genius Webscroll mouse came with a software and driver disk and I installed the software, but I pretty soon took it off again. Various hot keys were set up to do things like change the function of the middle button, swap left & right buttons, ETC. There were LOTS of "handy" features, which soon proved to be a pain in the fundament.

If you look in Add/Remove Programs, you may find a similar Logitech utility program has been installed. It seems to be called Logitech SETPOINT. According to some reports I have read, if your sister does have that software, she got off lightly!

Quote
've been using MS mice for the last ten years, and I'm amazed at how a really great mouse as the Logitech MX 400 comes with such a piece of crap as SetPoint.

"Universal scroll" hides middle button clicks from Firefox, "Autoscroll" is plain horrible in certain programs, middle button has to be pressed two times in Firefox to work, no per application assigments, lack of creative functions...

Isn't there an alternative to this garbage?

Using SetPoint here. It isn't my favorite software but my experience is different from what you portray above. A single click in Firefox activates Autoscroll or Universal scroll. Also, I haven't seen programs where "'Autoscroll' is plain horrible in certain programs".

One problem I have experienced with SetPoint, which I installed for my Logitech mouse/keyboard combo, is that it sometimes drops the keyboard altogether. In other words, if I open SetPoint, the keyboard section is not there, only the mouse, and special features on the keyboard do not work. So, I then have a basic keyboard. To resolve this, I can close SetPoint and then restart it; do not need to restart the computer.

I didn't know you had posted it as a hyperlink, It didn't show up as such on my screen. Cut us poor souls a little slack, will you?

The problem has been resolved, however. It was, indeed PEBKAC. I went over to my sister-in-law's today, and found that she literally isn't able to tell her right from her left (she's 85, and if that's the greatest problem she has, she's fortunate.) The computer mouse is working fine, my SIL not so well.

Thanks, everyone, for your help.At age 85, that's quite understandable. Glad to hear you figured out the real problem.

The color can be changed when posting but most forum members, including me, usually do not take extra step when posting. Solve : ABIT NF-95 RAM Issue?

Answer»

First:(i did search)
"Pages: [1]
No results found"

Ok so i have a home built PC atm, everything works great etc accept when i come to upgrade the RAM. Currently i have a 512MB Stick in there specs of it are:

PC2700
333Mhz
184pin DIMM (64x64)
Manufacturer: the TECH GUYS (bought from PC World)

My second stick wich i just bought of, of ebay and know that its working due to trying it in my brothers PC is again another 512MB Stick, specs again are:

PC2700
333Mhz
184pin DIMM (64x64)
Manufacturer: Samsung

Now each of them work fine on there own, but when i put them togethor trying to make it up too 1GB it boots fine no Beep Code errors but i get a really colourfull screen... as in you know when the TV Stations go offline? and you get all them colours come up its kinda like that ill try get a picture taken and update.

Something that could be causeing this is my on-board GFX Card as it does use some of the RAM.

Anyone who knows how to fix this please do reply, i have tried ENTERING the BIOS and changing some settings on the whole GFX Issue but to no avail...

Heres the whole computer specs if it helps:

Motherboard: ABIT NF-95
OnBoard GFX: Integrated NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 controllers provides enthusiast-class GeForce® 6 graphics features
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
RAM(the problem): 512MB, (want 1GB)

http://www.mvktech.net/content/view/3345/39/(Actual Motherboard)

Can't think of anything else that would cause an issue? other than whats above...

BTW As much as i want to upgrade the GFX Card i really can't afford it and would apreciate any answers that would mean i could keep my current config :p

Thanks for all replys

- Fred
(Plus im sure i could stick around and try to help some people) This might be a shot in the dark but some RAM doesn't play nice together because they like to have different voltages and timings. If you find out the settings of both sticks of ram enter the higher amount of voltage and the higher ram timings it might work.Quote from: TehGerg on June 28, 2007, 10:17:06 AM

Ok then thanks, will give it a shotOk this is what i've found after google'n:

http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/DDR_DDR2/index.htm

- The power etc is listed here, but as i've just found out that my orinal RAM by "The Tech Guys" is actualey made by: "Component Shop" which seems to be made by PC World and there not exactly telling me what kind of Power to try :s

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/[emailprotected]@[emailprotected]@&BV_EngineID=ccdgaddlgdgmfdjcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&sku=841700&fm=undefined&sm=undefined&tm=undefined&tabIndex=1

So gunna go try the SAMSUNG's one...

Thanks again ;oOk tried the above info with no result :|

its really starting to get on my nerves now, i've also tried it with 2x Samsung 512mb and its still not working
grrr

guess i should talk to the motherboard manufactuer (ABIT)

- FredBefore resorting to that travel to Crucial's website to see exactly what type of RAM will work in that board.

Solve : Hard drive controller question?

Answer»

I have a WD MyBook external HDD. My WIFE somehow managed to plug in a laptop power supply (19v) into it.

The external controller seems fine, but the HDD itself does not work.

The circuit board (HDD controller?) on the bottom of the HDD smokes when I plug it in. I was able to take off that circuit board but I don't have another HDD that matches it.

Is there any way to fix this, wether by replacing just the circuit board or buying the exact same model HDD and swapping the circuit boards to salvage the pics and such STORED on it or is the HDD just a lost cause?

Is there even anywhere I can find just the cirtuit board? I'm rather competent with disassembling/reassembling PARTS so that's not an issue.

ThanksYou fried the circuit board on the bottom of the drive itself?

You're looking at a lost cause when it comes to fixing that drive. Invest in another...it'll save you time and aggravation. It's cheaper to replace it.I just want to salvage the data stored on it and wondered if replacing that circuit board would allow me to do that. /shrug I already have a replacement, but the HDD is a different model (SATA instead of IDE) so no luck with that. You would have to find a WD HDD of not only the same model# but with serial #'s as close as possible to yours as they are built in batches for this to work...
I've managed to do it 2 or 3 times over the years but the circuit boards need to be as close to identical as possible for it to work.
Try E-Bay.

The only other option would be a data retrieval service which few of us can afford.

Solve : Modem Issues... I -think-?

Answer»

Hello fellow interweb denizens :>

I have an issue with my primary computer, the one that is used for school projects and... you know, a WORKING desktop. I really don't know what this problem is though, and can't seem to find the exact issue through troubleshooting or browsing the faqs offered on this website.

I was running XP, and the modem (I believe) was netdragon? The computer goes on a dialup connection, standard jack in the wall but connected through a surge protector.

The other night, the computer was connected to the INTERNET when either the house was struck by lightning, or very near to the house. I heard a POP and thought that the refridgerator had gotten shorted out because the internet and computer kept working and those were the only two appliances working.

About ten minutes after that, the net started getting laggy. Soon no page at all would show up, and it seemed to get slower and slower until it disconnected all together, and when I tried to reconnect, nothing. I checked the modem, and the computer says that it's working fine and dandy.

The next day, I tried another computer USING the same phoneline, same jack, and it accesses the internet just fine. This is the same service provider, same location, everything, just a different computer.

Nothing else isn't working on this computer, the internet is the only thing not working. When I do get an error message, which is rarely, all I'm prompted with is that there's no dial tone, but this has happened maybe twice. It does try and dial.

I've picked my friend's brains, called the retailer where I got the computer, and searched through the faqs, but I still can't figure out what's gone wrong. Unfortunately, I need this computer up again as soon as possible so I can resume my school work.

Any help would be massively, massively appreciated. Like, sacrificing virgins and firstborns appreciated Is this an internal or external modem ? ?

Either way it probably needs replaced...

If it's internal though remove it immediately before more damage is DONE. I've seen this happen with faulty internal modems. It's an internal modem. Wow, all the troubleshooting, everything, said that the modem was still working but I had that hunch that would be the problem o_O

I had no idea it could cause more damage than that though, definitely thanks for alerting me to that! You're more than Welcome....and it should be fairly reasonable to replace. I don't suggest WinModems however. Anything but.

Solve : Dying Motherboard? *urgent*?

Answer»

Hello and thank you for helping me with this, I am completely lost.

First the specs: Biostar NF4UL-A9, AMD 64 3500+, 1 GB patriot RAM, 200GB WD sata2, XFX 7800gt, Windows XP Home SP2

Yesterday my computer began freezing up for no apparent reason. I was doing nothing out of the ordinary. The only thing I could do was MANUALLY power off the coputer. By doing so, it booted fine and seemed to work after logging in to windows, but after about 30 seconds, it would again freeze. I basically lost my temper and tried the same thing about five more times, each with the same result. I did find that it would freeze at the windows welcome screen if I did not log in quickly enough. I was able to get the thing to boot into safe mode; whilst there, everything worked perfectly, I scanned for viruses (there were none) and backed up all of my music onto a portable hard drive. But the same ill effects were present when I booted back into regular windows.
Because safe mode worked, I figured it was a software issue and formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows. The install process was flawless. Once I got windows up I thought that I had solved the problem because it remained stable for about 5 minutes, but then the same thing started happening. This prompted me to open the case; I noticed the northbridge fan was not on.
I took the fan out and cleaned it, then put it back in to no avail. I tried plugging the fan into a system fan connector that I knew worked; the fan did not turn on. I found an old 90mm fan that I knew worked and tried plugging it in to the northbridge fan connector; it did not turn on.
So I am thinking that the motherboard is beginning to die and that it is necessary to buy a new one. I guess the freezing is due to the chipset overheating? I would appreciate the opinions of the community. It may not be the motherboard...

I would try replacing the Power Supply first. Thanks for the quick reply. Is it possible to test the power supply? Would it be safe to try the power supply from the Dell that I am currently using in my computer? Or maybe the Dell mobo with my power supply?

By the way, my power supply is a 420w Thermaltake that came with my Tsunami case. I have had all of these components for about 18 months. If you have another power supply to try...go for it. I'd wouldn't connect everything to it, though...just the essentials.

If it works...you know what the problem is.A power supply overload can certianly cause these PROBLEMS. Do you have a lot of USB devices plugged in? try just unplugging everything you don't need and see if that works before swapping power supplies. If you;re over-drawing the wattage your power supply is putting out, then you need a higher wattage. Make sure the one you swap it out with is higher wattage.OK, so I wasnt able to try any other power supplies after all. But with this one I have no usb devices plugged in, and no case fans or unessential power draws. It continues to be unstable. I dont think that it's a case of the psu not having the wattage, because it has worked fine for 18 months; I would say that it has just gone bad. I dont really have any way to test it though. I'm not convinced that the mobo is not without its faults though, mainly because the northbridge fan is broken. I sort of think I should just buy a mobo and psu so that I will definetly resolve the problem, and possibly have a good spare part for testing purposes should a problem arise again.

Should I decide to purchase a new psu and or mobo, I have come up with these. What are your opinons on them?

mobo: HTTP://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131125
psu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817170010

I know that those are sort of low end parts, but I cant really justify putting much more money than that into this computer as the whole thing is beginning to get rather outdated. Anyway, I dont see this computer getting much more intense use/gaming. I plan on getting a completely new system in about 6 months in which time my CURRENT computer will be delegated to more of an office role that I hope wont be too taxing on budget parts. Many if not all Dell PSU's are built strictly for Dells. Trying one on a non Dell setup can result in damage to the board or other components...

I would save up for a decent PSU...20 bucks will get you nothing but grief in my experience.

If your budget is limited then just buy one component at a time...get a quality PSU first...and save up for a new board.

Solve : Computer help for beginner?

Answer»

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right spot sorry if I'm not. I have a Dell Dimminsion 4400 with WINDOWS Xp the computer is about 4 yrs old. It was working fine until I loaned it to my brother till he got a new one and now I can't get it do do ANYTHING. When I turn it on it stays at the dell logo for awhile and then turns to black screen with message that says Boot Device not Detected System Haulted. I am not technical at all so if someone could help me in the simplest of terms I would greatly appreciate the help. I have no clue where to begin.

Thank You, MandyHave you tried installing, the Window CD(DVD), that came with your Dell.
Mines red (the CD(DVD) cover), so I believe yours might be.

It's should say something like this on it.
Operating System
Already Installed On Your Computer

Also to reinstall it, put the CD(DVD) in your computer when it's loading up, then look for a message on the top right saying
Boot somthing(can't really remember)

Hope this helps Ok I tried to reinstall windows with the cd. It goes through setup but then says setup did not find any hard DISK drives installed on computer, windows was not installed.first make sure all your computer peripherals are properly installed like your hard disk and cd roms. Once you are sure that these devises are properly installed, then start your computer by booting to your cd drives using your bootable installation disk of windows. If you don't know how to boot thru your cd you should first RUN the bios set-up and have the boot sequence start with your cd roms before your hard drive. Once you've set this up, save it. Then run your installation disk. You guys are about to blank her hard drive with the half baked advice. Are you aware of this?

Mandy walk away from the computer and post back more information about what happened prior to this according to your brother and if you want to lose all of the information on the drive permanently.I really don't know what happened before it quit working. According to him nothing. Typical of a 15 yr old! LOL I know it first started having problems cause he deleted the anti virus and by the time he told me is when the computer started acting up. He also installed Lime Wire on it. I don't know if this caused the problem just heard bad stuff about it. I don't think there is anything on there I can't live with out. I just wanted to get it working and let my kids have it. I'm starting to think the hard drive is already gone. Last night it was making clicking sounds when I turned it on. I really have no idea what I'm doing. So if the hard drive is dead what are the chances of someone like me who doesn't know anything about computers replacing the hard drive myself?Clicking sounds are not good, and the fact that it does not see the harddrive indicates that it has indeed gone south.

Replacing a harddrive is not terribly difficult, just two cables to be removed from the old one and then attached to the new. Several screws are what hold it in place. If you have never done it, it might be a good time to ask a geeky friend over for dinner and have him do it, or show you, or both.

Here are some sites with info and pictures:

Solve : Mouse only works on one side of the computer?

Answer»

We just got a new Microsoft optical mouse, and it only works on the left side of our laptop or at the rear. When we try to use it on the right (where we prefer) it doesn't GET any signal at all. Any suggestions on what we should do? We tried the mouse on other computers and it WORKED fine with them.If it's a wireless optical mouse...have the receiver as close to the mouse as posible.

If it isn't wireless...make SURE you're using the mouse on a dark surface...preferably matte black...no shiny surfaces.Other wirerless DEVICES may interfere with the signal such as cordless phones etc.
Try moving some of these away from the machine.
Some quality wireless mice/keyboard devices have an OPTION to change the frequency channel....check the manual.

Solve : HPP Power Supply?

Answer»

Does anyone know if HP is using a power supply that works with only a HP? I'vew tried two PS's from Pwer Up. Both died right away.
I have a HP Pavilion a1730n, running VistaHome Premium. Need to instal a PCIE card and the present PS does not have enough horsepower to handle the new PCIe cards. The machine has 2 gig of memory and presently the video is running fromn the motherboard.
Any suggestions... MONEY is a part of the final answer.
Thanks in advance
Rich bGo to any computer store with your old Power Supply.

Buy one with a little more horsepower that matches the dimensions of your CURRENT power supply.

Staples carries relatively cheap power supplies...it depends on what neck of the woods you're in.The Saviour < he's right on but; your gonna pay way more there or anywhere else in stores instead of online.... (look)
.... RETAIL stores are at least 25% more then buying online ..........
honvetops is absolutely correct...

It just depends how soon you want to get this thing. Are you looking to save bucks or are you looking to save time?I forgot about the I don't give a crap factor!!! I want it NOW!!! Power Supply Calculator

As to it being propietary i WOULD contact HP to make certain...

Solve : IBM Thinkpad control buttons?

I am USING IBM Thinkpad T43. I don't see on screen indicators when I use sound control buttons and Function+F controls. I mean I have not those green volume bars on my screen. They were but now gone.

Thanks. What HAPPENED before they disappeared?I have run some CLEANER programs. Other than CCleaner. I can't remember exact NAME. Just picked up because they had high rating. Did you reinstall the OS before this? Did you check the IBM site?Quote from: GX1_Man on June 04, 2007, 12:30:51 PM

Solve : i switched from intel to amd?

Answer»

i recently upgraded my MB and CPU to AMD from intel and now when WINDOWS starts up it gets to the windows logo with the load bar and just resarts itself im WONDERING if it wont work because of the brand switch and if so how can i fix it. i really dont want to reinstall windows because i dont have a disk but if ther is a way without a disk i will.
THANKS,
NateWhat flavor of Windows is this ? ?
If it is Win2k or newer you are out of LUCK without a Windows CD. The OS can't be moved from one setup to another without complications...
Since you have swapped out both the board and CPU you WOULD need an XP CD to do a repair install to get Windows to boot properly.

Solve : Major League Problems..?

Answer»

Hi,

im currently running an advent 7088 laptop (XP home, mobile AMD sempron 2800, 512mb ram, ATI radeon xpress 200m GPU)

as i was using the computer this morning, the mouse and keyboard just froze randomly. at first i though the computer had frozen but the programs were still running fine, albeit with no input from me. so i force rebooted the COMP, and on bootup the message

CMOS settings wrong
CMOS date/time not set
press f1 to run setup
press f2 to load DEFAULT values and continue.

i have seen this message a couple of times before, when rebooting the computer after a crash and i usually hit f1, put the time into the BIOS and im fine. however this time, the keyboard still doesnt work. so im stuck at the black booting SCREEN and have no idea what to do.

any ideas? thanks in advance.
stuarthunta89 ....... Based on what your telling us, it sounds as if the small battery that powers the clock and retains your cmos settings requires replacing.
UNLESS you are comfortable poking around inside your laptop, it might be prudent to take the laptop into a service shop to have the battery replaced .
A word of caution......... ask them for a firm price to replace the battery.

Good luck ,

Solve : Hard Drives Not Found?

Answer»

This question concerns my Dell Dimension 8300 desktop.

I was playing a CPU- and memory-intensive game recently when it froze up entirely, with alt+tab and ctrl+alt+del not working at all. This actually happens a lot with this particular game--no big deal AFAIC. I held down my power button to force a shutdown (my only option), waited a minute, then turned it back on. The BIOS booted fine, but then I got an error screen stating (paraphrase here):

BIOS cannot find Primary Hard Drive 0. BIOS cannot find Primary Hard Drive 1. Press F1 to continue or F2 to enter BIOS.

F1 did nothing, so I entered the BIOS, and switched my Primary Master and Slave hard drives from "Auto" to "Off," and back again: nothing. BIOS did detect my Secondary HDD and the DVD+R I have slaved to it just fine, but of course I couldn't boot with my XP drive inoperational.

I shut the computer back down, checked all the cable connections, then turned it on again, to the same problem. I shut it down again, waited 25 mintues, and turned it back on, and now everything is working fine.
Obviously an answer isn't urgent since my computer is up and running, but I'd like to know what's going on so this doesn't happen again. I've got a sneaking suspicion that it's a power supply ISSUE (it's just a 305W), but the fact that my secondary ATA/IDE devices weren't affected makes me pretty uncertain. That and the fact that I honestly don't know much about computers.

Anyone have any ideas? My dad had a similar problem on his computer once. It would not detect his HD, and so he pluged in the slave drive's power plug (he didn't have a slave drive), and it worked fine. The PSU could indeed be the culprit here...post more SPECS on the machine hardware OS how much RAM, what game etc. and we can advise furtherQuote from: CompGuy17 on June 04, 2007, 07:03:45 PM

Solve : f.y.i.. sata raid installation I wish I read this a week ago !!?

Answer»

found this on another SITE, d**n*

quote*

You are not the first one with these problems.
It is impossible to get the newest nForce SataRaid drivers installed onto an nForce SataRaid system by using F6/floppy method. Reason: The ACTUAL nForce SataRaid drivers are not correctly digitally signed by MS. Although the XPx32 and XPx64 setup routine detects the Raid array correctly during TEXTMODE part of the installation, it installs at LEAST the wrong MS IDE Standard drivers. Bad consequence: endless reboots.

Sorry about your luck You* would be right master !

for the LIFE of me, I thought the f6 button on my micro PRO media board was inoperative!!! Glad you got it solved...i know a few solid people from there...

Solve : Laptop not charging?

Answer»

Hello. I have had my laptop for over a year and just all of a sudden it has been having CHARGING issues. At random times when I startup my computer the battery just doesn't charge. But when I shut it off the light goes orange and starts charging. Just recently when I turn it off it charges for 15 seconds then the light goes off for a second then stays on for another 15 seconds. I don't understand what is going on can someone PLEASE help me?i know on most computers if the battery is low and orage battery light comes on are you sure its not the low battery light, if not you might just need a new battery or charger, What kind of computer is it, be specific.Quote from: LtRyan5184 on June 03, 2007, 06:11:23 PM

i know on most computers if the battery is low and orage battery light comes on are you sure its not the low battery light, if not you might just need a new battery or charger, What kind of computer is it, be specific.

Well on my computer orange means charging. I have a Toshiba Satellite M55 laptop. I also already had an AC adapter problem with the one it came with 2 months ago. It kept making a constant squeaking sound and stopped charging all together. So I bought a replacement adapter and everything has been working fine until recently. The computer starts up and runs everything just on the battery but it does not charge at all when on.Oh and also I just took out the battery and tried to startup the laptop just on the AC power and it isn't working. I have no problem paying for a new battery or adapter I just want to know what I need to get I don't want to BUY a bunch of accessories and still be stuck with a laptop that doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated. Uh oh... I think you might have the same problem with me before, I have the Toshiba A100-SK9 and it was my first laptop, when I bought it and got home, it charged for abit but 2 days later it didn't hold a single charge. When I BROUGHT it back, they told me that my system was defective!!! So in otherwords, your system, too, MIGHT be defective.Well I have had it for nearly 4 months. It might just be the charger which I got on Ebay over a MONTH ago.I'm guessing it was a used charger ? ?The guy was claiming it was new but it was cheap price. I am thinking I should just buy another adapter. Think it is safe to say?Yep.

Does it have the manuf. logo on it or is it a generic one ? ?

Used electronics are similar to used cars...sometimes it's a gamble. It just says Replacement AC Adapter. You think I should just bite the bullet and buy a more expensive one?Quote from: HelpMe000 on June 05, 2007, 12:37:11 AM

Solve : paper jam on only certain papers?

Answer»

>:(I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. My question is in regards to my HP deskjet 940c which prints fine on all papers except when printing business cards. I had used Staples brand and then bought Avery 8871 which I had used before with no problem. These sheets have 10 cards (2 columns of 5 rows) the first 4 rows print fine, then in the bottom portion of the 4th row the PAPER stops moving and the entire fifth row gets printed on the bottom portion of the 4th row. I had called Staples help line and they suggested the other paper. I chatted on line with HP and after running 2 sheets, both with the same results (printing the full sheet, printing one row at a time) she gave me 2 LINKS for self help, for checking for paper stuck in printer. I have taken the back door off and find no stuck paper. I am so frustrated and any help will be appreciated.Well, surely you would know if you had a paper jam. Do you? Are you saying you do not have a paper jam, yet HP "gave me 2 links for self help, for checking for paper stuck in printer." If you do not have a paper jam, the chat with HP just indicates the incompetence of the person with whom you chatted. It's a common problem in today's tech support world.

I'm not clear on whether you went back to the original paper you were using and tried it again. Did you? If not, why? Did it have a different number of rows and/or columns?

What software are you using? Does the software have a screen for printer setup where you select the type of paper? Did you make a change there when you changed to the Avery 8871 paper? Is the Avery 8871 supposed to be the equivalent of the Staples paper you were using? After the HP help person was about to give up, I asked if there was a chance that a small piece of paper could be stuck someplace causing just the heavier paper to "jam"?? That is why she gave me those 2 links..this help person was trying to get rid of me by this point I am sure and the last suggestion was to get in touch with Avery, which I did, who suggested I get in touch with HP..Grrrrrrr
At the HP request, I took a new sheet of the same package and printed. It printed fine up till the end of the 4th row and then the paper just stopped moving so all of the print for the 5th row was printed on the very bottom of the 4th row of cards. She then had me take another clean sheet from the same pack and try again doing one row at a time, with the smae results.
THe software is Microwsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 editor. Yse I can select the type of paper, Ih has no selection for business cards but this 8871 a inkjet, matte coated so I used HP Matte for greeting cards, the HP perso suggested I use "plain paper" stteing and there was no change. It is not the program that has the paper selection, it is the printer and the HP printer has mostly HP paper selections to choise from. But I have used these cards before on this printer (I think) with no problem. Thanks for that clarification. It’s a perplexing problem. I'm not sure I can offer a solution. I don't have time now to give this more thought but I'll check back later. In the mean time, someone else may have some ideas. The Business card stock is probably a heavier weight paper and that is why it is getting stuck and causing the problems....

I had a problem like this and found that the rubber feed wheels had paper lint on them, which was causing them to slip and lose position causing overlapping of printing and the heavier stock to jam, especially if it is not a straight pass for paper and the paper stock has to bend, such as going from the bottom tray and curl around to get printed on.

I would suggest you open the printer, remove the paper, and take rubbing ALCOHOL and cotton swaps to the rubber wheels to clean them of any lint or fuzz balls. Then reload the stock and see how that works. The wheels should grip the stock better and print on it correctly if the wheels still dont slip on the stock. For the fact that you printed on this stock before, it would suggest that it should have no problem doing it now as long as the parts in the printer are not worn etc. I really APPRECIATE all your time and help and I have tried cleaning the rollers, first I took the back panel off and cleaned 3 small ones then in the front, 4 larger ones but it is still doing the same thing. Just fyi, I think this is the same paper I have used before but it could be a different number and after talking to Avery I find that with this stock, you can not print on the back...not sure if that makes a difference...I do not think it is the heavier paper that is causing the problem as I have card stock that to me is the same thickness and that prints fine..... I just dont get it!!! again I really appreciate your answers.
