Solve : windows 2000 emergency repair disk? |
Answer» Where can I make one? Not sure cause I never did this but when I go to the repair screen if you go threw the manual I think it ask me for this which I dont have an it restarts. If you will insert your 2000 cd, it will GIVE you an option to create an emergency repair disk, which is a floppy with the essential start files on it. Or if you ever have problems just insert the cd, boot from the cd, it will start the install 2000 PROCESS. Don't worry, it just loads initial files. Just continue to the screen where it asks if you want to repair an installed version & click yes....same as the repair disk & it doesn't remove any files or programs already installed. |

Solve : reinstalling windows 2000 professional? |
Answer» Hi Everyone, I am new to this board but I really need help!!!!! At work I have a Dell 4100. Current OS is Windows 2000 Professional. We ran the Operating System CD to click on the option to upgrade the OS. Now when the screen titled Performing FINAL Tasks comes up the computer hangs on registeriing components. If we manually shut down the computer and start again...we get a screen saying attempt re-install again, insert cd and we go through the same thing again until the computer hangs at the same SPOT........PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! Try disconnecting anything unnecessary to the installation. It may be hanging on a driver, so if you can remove anything that isn't needed to install the OS, you may get it past, then you can install all your stuff back one piece at a time, so you can see what hangs it.Thanks very much for answering. I'll try that and see if it works....I'll let you know tomorrow after work. Thanks again....CandyQuote We ran the Operating System CD to click on the option to upgrade the OS.Upgrade to what?that was the choice it gave me.....upgrade to NTFS or clean instalI still don't understand. What OS was originally INSTALLED on that computer?the original OS was Windows 2000Let me see if I understand...you had windows 2000 and put in a windows 2000 CD and tried to do a upgrade? Was your goal to get NTFS filing system? yes, but i can't seem to get anything now except the screen that the computer hangs on. How do i get this off the computer when it starts up. I would even try to do a clean install, but i can't get to that off of the cd anymore.Frankly I would do a clean install. If you want to do this you need to BOOT off the CD and follow the screen prompts. Make sure you do a format using NTFS. After this is completed do all the updates from Microsoft. If you need more help please let us know. |

Solve : Deleted password for Windows 2000? |
Answer» I recently bought a used laptop from someone I've known a long time. I wanted to set up a navigation SYSTEM using Street Atlas and a GPS receiver. I recently bought a used laptop from someone I've known a long time. This is the advice you'll get here: Legally, a laptop should be sold either OS-free or with a licensed OS (that is, you get the install disk that blongs with the computer) So you haven't lost anything. Set it to boot from the legal Windows install disk that belongs with it (you did get one, didn't you?) and set it up the way you want it. How did you delete the password? You should have entered "nothing" as the new password. If you entered anything at all, even spaces you may have actually changed the password rather than deleting it as you wanted to. There is a chance(probably SLIM) that you could get into safe mode and correct the password issue. Press F8 a couple of times shortly after exiting the BIOS password screen. Select "Safe Mode". Depending on the setup, you may be able to get back into Windows. |

Solve : Formating the C drive in Windows 2000? |
Answer» Hey all, Welcome to the CH forums. How do I change the bios boot sequence to do that? And I do not have the windows install CD any longer, is there another method?I basically just want to remove all the files on the computer w/o removing the OPERATING system if I can help it. Quote from: Silencher on April 28, 2008, 07:57:47 PM I basically just want to remove all the files on the computer w/o removing the operating system if I can help it. That's not what you asked for - your ORIGINAL post says Quote I tried right clicking on the c-drive and formatting, Is there a way to format/re-format? You'll have to delete folder\files but be especially careful when deleting items in Documents and Settings and in Windows. Good luckQuote from: Silencher on April 28, 2008, 07:57:47 PM I basically just want to remove all the files on the computer w/o removing the operating system if I can help it. The operating system is made of... guess what? Files! What you are proposing (removing everything except the operating system) is the same as formatting the disk and reinstalling the OS, then adding any necessary hardware drivers. One reason I can think of why you may be reluctant to do this is that you do not actually have a Windows install disk? If that is the reason, maybe you should think about getting one, because if your hard drive ever fails or GETS corrupted, you're gonna be SCREWED! |

Solve : windows 2000 pro? |
Answer» I just put windows 2000 pro on a gateway 3300 solo without a cd-rom drive and now the os starts up halfway across the 2000 pro startup page and goes to the blue stop error SCREEN and says... inaccesable_hardive_device since this laptop has no cd-rom drive I loaded the os to the hard drive via an adapter on another computer, on this computer it works fine, but wont work on the gateway. Before this I loaded 98 and 98se like this on it they worked but I was having driver problems. B-4 any of these os were put on the hard drive it was wiped each time with dban wiper. Anyone have any ideas?Windows OS's since Win2k tie themselves to the machine they are installed on... Thanks for the ideas, Im new at this, so Im wondering, I dont have nine x, But I do have linux ubuntu. As Im writing this Im dbaning the hard drive again. would the linux work like the 9x for adual boot? Thanx! I don't have enough experience with "Linux" to say. Plenty of opinions on the internet though. I ASSUMED you had access to Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. See Windows 9x. Since you don't have a CD-ROM drive, I was suggesting you place Windows 2000 Pro installation software (and any additional drivers you need) on the hard drive and then build your system in-place on the target machine. In order to do that, you'll need a compatible operating system to kick-off the installation program (either "winnt.exe" or "winnt32.exe"). You need to boot that basic operating system either directly or indirectly from the target machine. Normally you would boot from a floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, maybe a USB flash drive(?), or an existing operating system on the hard drive in the target machine. Do you have access to an internal/external floppy drive on the target machine? If you setup a small partition on the laptop to hold a "basic" operating system and the Windows 2000 Pro installation files (or the entire installation CD if you prefer), you greatly reduce your dependence on the installation CD and/or CD-ROM drive that you don't have. You would then install your Windows 2000 Pro operating system to a second partition. The "winnt.exe" is executed under a 16-bit operating system. This is the version used to install to an empty disk when booting from the Windows 2000 Pro installation CD (which loads a minimal operating system). I believe you may also use DOS, MS-DOS, or software from Windows 98 Startup Disk (boot floppy). The "winnt32.exe" must be executed from a 32-bit operating system. It has more options than the "winnt.exe" and may be used to upgrade or reinstall an existing operating system. You need to pay attention to which "file system(s)" you want to use and which operating systems work with them. I may not have all of this correct, but the point is there are lots of little background details that you are missing. If you think you want to try a dual boot, you should do some background reading/research.Thanks for the help, unfortunately I am going to have to park this PROJECT for a while, something came up. I will attack it again in a few weeks. Thanks again for the help !!! |

Solve : can:t see hidden folders in windows 2000, help me please? |
Answer» Hello! What makes you think there are hidden folders that you can't see? Its because i tried creating a new folder. I hide it and then when i unhide it on folder options it didn't come out... If the folder was empty it won't unhide...one of those quirks.hi, It seems to be a virus problem. Just try to follow the steps below. 1. Go to Start --> Run, then type Regedit 2. Navigate to the registry folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOW ALL 3. Find a key called CheckedValue. 4. Double Click CheckedValue key and modify it to 1. It may be 0, MAKE it 1. This is to show all the hidden FILES. let me no if it works.... Plus u can also try out following thing. Just go to Control Panel-->Folder Options-->View There just click on "Show hidden files and folders". Make it ON. This can also help you out i believe. I advice try both the steps that I told you. Quote from: patio on February 22, 2008, 09:19:56 AM If the folder was empty it won't unhide...one of those quirks. But I have a folder where my important docs are and it wont show. But I tried editing the registry as what Technofreak said. But my problem is when i hide it again. I think it will be a problem in the future if im going to edit the registry every time im going to show my docs. Well, anyways, thanks for all your replies.. I learn much from this forum. Umm. how about don't hide it? If you want to protect it use Microsoft Private Folder http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Lockdown/Microsoft-Private-Folder.shtml Which is free and gives you a password protected folder to keep your stuff in.Quote from: TheEmperor on February 23, 2008, 04:59:18 AM Umm. how about don't hide it? Solve : Windows 2000 NT Freezing....? |
Answer» 1. Apparently when you want to MAKE a bootable CD from an ISO image, the CD burner program must be told to treat it as an "image burn" not a "file burn", otherwise you're just saving another file to CD. LOTS of tutorials on web thru google, but this post thread gave me some quick insight: Ive got the 1gig in now and so far no errors... The computer just freezes in windows quicker with the 1gig in. I am REALLY considering parting the computer out!!! lol Test passed with a 1 gig in.....what should I run or do now? OK assuming I have the correct memory (1 gig tested fine) where should I look next? Should I run a boot disk? What will I do with that? I will leave the 512K mem out for now.1. 1 GB Memory Module. If the test passed, sometime in the near future you should run it all night or longer to ensure it and the basic memory subsystem is solid. You want to be sure the memory is "good" before you decide to keep it. Having said that, you should run with the memory that is "good". If the memory test doesn't freeze then I would look elsewhere for the problem: o Hardware (devices, cables, connections) o Software (application, operating system, device drivers) o Motherboard and/or BIOS configuration 2. Let's start with the software. Start by minimizing your Windows environment. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of basic device drivers to allow you to troubleshoot and fix your system. If your system freezes running this minimal set of drivers, then it's not your third party drivers. Boot your system into "Safe Mode" (the regular one, not with networking or comand prompt only). Let it set for awhile. If no freeze, then exercise the operating system and some of its utilities. Still no freeze, exercise your security software ensuring only one is active at a time. If system freezes, try to identify what you were doing and what software was active at the time of the freeze. Still no freeze, then add your second security product concurrent with first. Still no freeze, then add your third security product if you normally run them all concurrently. You may want to disconnect from internet before testing in Safe Mode because your security software will not automatially start in this mode (although I guess if you're not running Safe Mode with Networking it wouldn't matter). 3. Potential Software Issue (don't address these yet - background info only): a. Application. One or more of it's files may be CORRUPT. Uninstall, reboot, and re-install the application (possibly download new installation file). It may also be incompatible with other software. This is relatively common for security software that operate at low levels within the system. b. Operating System. One or more of your operating systems files may be corrupt. c. File System. May want to check the integrity of the file system and possibly the surface of the disk. d. Device Drivers. One or more of your device drives may be corrupt, bad, or incompatible with your system. If the 1G stick checked out OK then just re-boot to Windows ...run the machine thru it's paces and see if the freezing is gone. If so you have found the culprit...Finally gave up and took it in... They called and basically said the motherboard was shot... I couldnt find another Abit SR7 - 8X so I guess im computer shoppin... Im not sure weather to buy another tower or to get a laptop. I use my cpu for work email, maps and microsoft office things... Any suggestions for me under 1000.00??? ThanksQuote from: TxOutlaw on December 04, 2007, 11:42:38 AM Finally gave up and took it in... I use my cpu for work email, maps and microsoft office things... Any suggestions for me under 1000.00??? 1. I cannot advise on a computer purchase as I don't follow the market that closely. I have strong bias toward desktops as I believe maintenance/repair is cheaper and easier. 2. Motherboard Shot. Anything's possible. How did they determine the motherboard is shot? Who determined it was shot? Geek Squad? 3. Does your system freeze when you're running MemTest86 v3.3 against a single 1 GB module? MemTest86 is designed to run forever until you terminate with "Escape" key. Quote from: TxOutlaw on November 03, 2007, 04:31:56 PM Test passed with a 1 gig in.....what should I run or do now? So the 1 GB tests OK with "no errors". How many "passes" did the test complete and/or how long did you run the test? (I'm trying to get some data on the stability of your system. Test passed because... no errors were reported; it ran for several hours and complete passes; and you manually terminated test with "Escape" key; it did not terminate VIA freeze.) 4. Hard Drive. What shape is your hard drive in? Most hard disk drive manufacturers have diagnostic programs on their web sites that you can download and run to check the integrity of the drive and its disk surfaces. 5. IDE Cable. If you're using the newer PATA hard drives that operate at 66/100/133 (something?), you should have an 80-wire flat ribbon cable with a 40-pin connector. At those higher throughput speeds the old 40-wire cable won't cut it (will cause problems). 6. Does your system freeze when you boot and run it in Windows "Safe Mode"? 7. I can't tell you it's not the motherboard, but there are other things that may cause a freeze. |

Answer» Hello, my situation looks hopeless. Maybe someone can help. Solve : Problems w/ windows 2000 pro? |
Answer» I'm useing windows 2000 pro w/microsoft office 2000 and a Canon pixma MP170 printer. My problem is after first starting the computer it will print fine but after a couple of hours it won't print. I had it in for repair and they cleared the hard DRIVE and reinstalled the operating system. It STILL does the same thing. It shows that its comunicateing with the printer but does'nt print. I hooked the printer to my laptop w/windows XP and have no problem printing. Any sugestions? Check your power saver settings. Look if the printer can be shut down by windows to save power. I know some network cards can be shut down and when you go to use them they don't always start BACKUP. Maybe your printer is doing the same. |
