My computer crashed 3-4 weeks ago. It was restored to a "Windows XP PROFESSIONAL" OPERATING system. SINCE re-installing my "OFFICE 2000 premium"
I find that every time I go to use Word, Excel, or any progam in office, A window comes up and says "please wait while windows configures Office 2000 premium. How can I get the Office program configured once and for all and rid myself of this error? I've already tried re-installing and repairing features from the original disk to no avail.I saw this on a server once, where if the user was not the admin, but INSTEAD a power user it would do it over an over again every time. After logging in as the Local Administrator of the system it wrote to the registry that it has been initialized and all was fine.

So do you know if you ar ethe Admin of the system or a lower tier power user etc?

Every time i TRY to install SOMETHING that uses a WINDOWS installer ..it SAYS that the windows installer service could not start.
this is an "old" pc that i'm useing to test out Windows2k before i install it on my main pc

Where can I make one? Not sure cause I never did this but when I go to the repair screen if you go threw the manual I think it ask me for this which I dont have an it restarts.If you will insert your 2000 cd, it will GIVE you an option to create an emergency repair disk, which is a floppy with the essential start files on it. Or if you ever have problems just insert the cd, boot from the cd, it will start the install 2000 PROCESS. Don't worry, it just loads initial files. Just continue to the screen where it asks if you want to repair an installed version & click yes....same as the repair disk & it doesn't remove any files or programs already installed.

You can also use the command prompt:
sfc:/scannow to scan for missing or corrupt files. If you need help just open command prompt & type in sfc/help.Thanks, Not going to install 2k again just tring to fix it. Hi Everyone, I am new to this board but I really need help!!!!! At work I have a Dell 4100. Current OS is Windows 2000 Professional. We ran the Operating System CD to click on the option to upgrade the OS. Now when the screen titled Performing FINAL Tasks comes up the computer hangs on registeriing components. If we manually shut down the computer and start again...we get a screen saying attempt re-install again, insert cd and we go through the same thing again until the computer hangs at the same SPOT........PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! Try disconnecting anything unnecessary to the installation. It may be hanging on a driver, so if you can remove anything that isn't needed to install the OS, you may get it past, then you can install all your stuff back one piece at a time, so you can see what hangs it.Thanks very much for answering. I recently bought a used laptop from someone I've known a long time. I wanted to set up a navigation SYSTEM using Street Atlas and a GPS receiver.

The laptop asks for a password when first turned on and another one when Windows is starting. I didn't want to have to enter two passwords sso I went into Control PANAL and deleted the second password.

Now I can't log onto Windows.

Any help will be APPRECIATED. Password help is posted here at least once a day. It is not that we don't believe "the kids did it, the dog ate it, etc." reasons. The possibility of helping do something illegal exists, therefore I don't think anyone here can help you. Sorry. Quote

Change the bios boot sequence to boot from the cdrom first (if necessary) then boot from your Windows install cd and follow the on-screen prompts to delete/create partitions and format.

Hi I just bought a compaq presario V2004AP recently. Its OS is Windows Xp. I tried to connect to my 2Wire modem but when I type my password and try to connect it, nothing seems to happen and it will display the
message " Wireless connection 2 One or more networks are available. To see a list of available network click here." What's happening? PLEASE help! Is this AT&T? If so:Normally AT&T will set up the SSID and the WEP key for you. You just have to make SURE you get the WEP key entered correctly. One important thing is to check your local area connection and make sure it'll automatically obtain an ip address. Just GO to control panel > network connections, right click "local area connection" and go to properties. Highlight the "internet protocol" entry in that box, and click properties. Verify that both IP and DNS are set to obtain automatically. If that's set, and you have your WEP key in correctly, it should work. The strangest thing of all is that ccSetMgr.exe must be checked in the Startup in the System Configuration Utility. It is my understanding that this is a Setup for Norton Anti-Virus so I do not get the relationship.
The only time that I get an acceptable action is after I have DELETED Normal.dot at it's home at computer/c:/Windows/App Data/Microsoft/Templates, then it opens instantly. (ONCE)

How to RESOLVE when forget the window 2000 password?My PC with window XP cannot properly startup today. After I login, it seems loading application and the desktop already shown but the system automatically reboot. just before reboot , the screen flash a message :

You may have to HOOK it up as a slave drive to grab your important data and re-install Windows...

I just put windows 2000 pro on a gateway 3300 solo without a cd-rom drive and now the os starts up halfway across the 2000 pro startup page and goes to the blue stop error SCREEN and says... inaccesable_hardive_device since this laptop has no cd-rom drive I loaded the os to the hard drive via an adapter on another computer, on this computer it works fine, but wont work on the gateway. Before this I loaded 98 and 98se like this on it they worked but I was having driver problems. B-4 any of these os were put on the hard drive it was wiped each time with dban wiper. Anyone have any ideas?Windows OS's since Win2k tie themselves to the machine they are installed on...
Is the Win2K CD from Gateway ? ?

In NORMAL circumstances you could do a Repair Install of Win2K but without a CD drive i don't SEE how this would be possible.

Does the laptop support booting to a USB device ? ?If you don't mind a "dual" boot system:
o Partition the hard drive into multiple partitions.
o With hard drive in computer (with CD-ROM drive), install Windows 9x (or MSDOS?) to a FAT32 partition.
o Copy Windows 2000 Pro installation files to subdirectory on that FAT32 partition or to a second FAT32 partition.
o Also copy any drivers (e.g. motherboard) needed for target computer.
o Place hard drive in "target" computer.
o Boot to the Windows 9x (or MSDOS?) operating system and let it rediscover appropriate drivers for "target" computer
o Initiate "custom" Windows 2000 Pro installation to different partition on hard drive using "winnt" or "winnt32" from Windows 2000 Pro setup files.

This is the first time this has happened. I had a power outage and my computer turned off. I restarted it and it's now asking me for a login and PASSWORD, problem is I've never set up a login or password. When I try to login it gives me an error "THE SYSTEM CANNOT LOG YOU IN BECAUSE THE DOMAIN HOME-PC IS NOT AVAILABLE". But it doesn't give me the option to change the domain. I'm stuck at the windows login SCREEN. I restarted the computer 3 times.

When starting the machine tap F8 repeatedly before you see the Win2K logo screen.
It will list 4 or 5 choices...plain Safe Mode will be fine for your needs.
Once in hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE and clik change password...leave the entries blank if you do not want one.thank you! You may have just saved my life! Or at least the life of my computerI saw you thinking about picking up the sledgehammer and reacted accordingly....

ive been trying to install windows 2000 onto a new laptop that came with winxp. the processor is intel core 2 duo. ive tried LOOKING up a HCL but i couldnt find it. anyone have any experience with this? does anyone know if it is possible?You'll have to tell us what you've tried already - are you attempting to use a genuine W2k cd with a COA - make and MODEL of the laptop etc, any displayed error messages....

I am a CS student that has recently been thrown into the lions den at work. I have been asked to resolve some windows 2000 server issues and I'm at a loss as to what to do next. My schedule tasks function KEEPS giving me the following error:
0x8007052e: Logon Failure : unknown user name and password.
I have tried all of the obvious troubleshooting techniques to no avail. I even referenced a "How to schedule Tasks" tutorial...lol... just to be on the safe side. I know that there was a hot fix issued for this exact problem and, accordind to my file search, I contain the mstask.dll. I have been SCHEDULING tasks using the AT COMAND and they run.... and run....and run...and never seem to finish the task. When I manually run my batch file, it works perfectly, eliminating that as the possible issue. I am logged on as the administrator with full permissions......so, what am I missing???
I, and my blood pressure, greatly appreciate any and all help. Are you a domain admin? or is this machine a stand alone server and you are a admin on it?

Also the job you are setting up...what does it do?

I hope this helps....it is a stand alone server on a network with about 10 other computers. I only have admin permissions for the stand alone server. The person who did this job previously was abruptly dismissed, so asking him questions is not an option. The only password I found in his things was for the server. The batch file is a database backup to an omega driveAlthough I have my hot fixes, is there a way that they could have been installed incorrectly, causing these issues? (I know, I'm grasping at straws )If possible post the batch file and we'll have a looksee.

If the folder was empty it won't unhide...one of those quirks.

Which is free and gives you a password protected folder to keep your stuff in.

The stop code D1 seems to refer to a problem with a driver. Have you installed any new hardware or driver PRIOR to the problem occuring?

I have a 2000 server (took over admin duties) and there appears to be no task scheduler installed. There is a folder in control panel that is not labeled but if you mouse over it, it reads task scheduler. CLICKING on folder does nothing. Ideas? See, if Task Scheduler service is running.
See also, if taskschd.msc file is present in Windows\SYSTEM foldertash scheduler doesn't appear in services at all.Do you have MSTask.exe file in:
C:\WINNT\system32\

If you go Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools, is Scheduled Tasks listed there?No, scheduled tasks is not listed under system tools. MStask.exe is not in winnt\system32 but is in winnt\servicepackfiles.Are your Windows Updates current?
If so, try to copy/paste MStask.exe from winnt\servicepackfiles to C:\WINNT\system32\

Greetings.....I am trying to defrag my C drive, and keep receiving a message that only 2% of my 15% free space is available for use by defrag. I've moved, or deleted everything I can, and still don't UNDERSTAND what could be causing my free space to be used by some unknown factor. The drive is only 2.8 G, and was DESIGNED to hold only my Windows 2000 Pro operating system. It is part of a cabled network. Any ideas?

Thanks, JohnSome ideas to look at are things like running diskcleanup and making your SWAP file smaller or even better moving it to another drive will help.

I would say moving the swap file only masks the problem for a while, which could be not enough memory. How much Ram do you have installed? The swap file i don't believe has anything to do with this ISSUE...
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. WEBSITE and post the results.What does My Computer say about hard drive size, and free space?

I have an older Pentium Laptop with WIN2K Pro on it with no install CD's.
I accidentally CHANGED an HDC Driver and now the machine crashes after it fully boots up and reboots so fast I can not read the blue screen for a reason but assume it is the driver I changed because that is when the problem started. I got Win2K from someone else and crated 4 boot disks and ran a REPAIR but it did not solve the problem.

No..not a code problem this TIME....I was trying to install on a different HD I got & keep getting a error 7 message. I went to the MS site & found their fixes but nothing worked. It states it's either a conflict with the bios, or the ram.
I never had problems installing on this computer on other HD's before this. Everything in the bios (Pheonix) is set to default...& I removed the ram & checked each one at a time...but still the same results. The computer is a 98 Dell, 320 Ram, 450 Cpu.

Or you may want to copy all the files and use your burning program to create a new bootable CD.
This has worked for me in the past...Ok...now for a lame question...copy the files from where? I keep a backup on the second HD of my C drive..the one with the OS on it.
I had the local shop guy burn me a copy of the 2000 Pro a few months ago to use as a backup....but the code won't work with it for some reason. It's a Pro CD..not an upgrade...but the key just wont work.
Wouldn't I have to copy the registry too? Never tried anything like that..so...any help appreciated. It'll be tomorrow before I can try something different anyways. Still trying to set up server on my other puter thats being disagreeable too. Sorry but this is something that needs solved between you, the shop owner and MS.Ok...try again...My "original" CD is the one giving the error code when I try to use it. The code has always worked fine with it. I had my local guy burn me a copy just to use IF something ever happened to my original. The copy will load everything with no error messages..but won't take the code.
Can I copy from my HD to make a bootable CD. Or did you mean from one CD to another? Thas what I've never done before.OK!! Finally got it to install. Took out the DVD player & put the CD player back in it worked. Now though....it's not reconizing my other HD in "My Computer".

Has folders, & the swap files for the old drive on it. They are both WD brand.Dis-connect the offending drive and do a few cold boots...
Re-connect it making sure it's jumpered as slave and see what happens.OK...still no good..but now it shows in the Disk Manager...as Disk 1, Dynamic, Foreign. If I rite clik it says...import foreign disk,.....or revert to basic disk, & in the properties it shows 0 capcity...0unallocated space...

I bought a larger hard drive to put into a laptop computer that I have and I had the place where I bought it install the hard drive for me.

In the past they installed a hard drive for me on the computer which I am currently using to type this and all I had to do then was to put the SOFTWARE disc in the CD-Rom drive when I got home and the software installed itself with no problems.

Now I got this other computer (a Dell INSPIRON 4150) back home and with the same software disc was attempting to install the software on there so I can use that computer instead of this slower one but I keep getting stupid errors saying it can't FIND this or that file even though the files needed for installation are right on the disc!

What do I do? The latest error now says it can't find txfaux.dl_ file and ASKS me to make sure the disc is in the drive (well of course it is!) or to provide the location where it can be found (somewhere on that disc!).

Why I am having all these problems now when the same software installed flawlessly and without problems on this computer which I am currently using (a Dell Latitute CPiA)? Neither computer has their original Dell brand hard drive but that did not seem to make any difference when I installed the software on this computer. This compuer has a SeaGate hard drive and the one I just got for the other computer is Hitachi brand (that's all the store had).

i don't have a clue what is this kind of error.One of the files is missing or corrupted (unreadable). From the error MESSAGE, it looks like you're trying to install it from your hard drive, so I will assume that you don't have a legitimate CD and are trying to install a copied version. For that reason, this is as much help as you can get on that TOPIC from anyone here. Buy a legitimate copy then you can complain to Microsoft it isn't working.

This is kind of a long story but I dont know the password to that ACCOUNT and I really need it seeing EVERYTHING is blocked from all the other accounts. Is there any way I can RESET it and just make a new password?

ThanksSee if it will let you boot to "safemode"....after you reboot...watch for the loading screen to tell you to hit F8 for more options & do so...then PICK safemode...if it then boots in safe....go to "Start/run/...& type in the following....sfc /scannow, & hit enter. There is a SPACE between sfc & / or it won't come up. have your 2000 disk handy to insert as it will tell you to do this. This checks the file SYSTEM for errors & if thats the problem it will rewrite the files from the disk. I have this come up occasionally...I just scan & REPAIR.
If this doesn't do the trick...then boot from your CD..& use the repair option....if this doesn't work...let me know...I'm an old hand with 2000!!Is there anyway to do it without the 2000 disc???Well...the MS site tells ya it will work off the files already in the system...but if those are the "corrupt" files then it won't.....So yes you do need the disk...can you get into safemode?? If so & you don't have a disk...then run a virus scan from there & see if that cures anything.
Yes i can get into safe mode, i will try the virus scan and see what happens...Ok...run a spyware & all too if you have it....if it's lettin ya into safe then it's not hopeless.
If you can boot to Safe Mode, your video card may be a suspect. Do you have separate video card, or on-board one?It won't run without the CD...

I m Muhammad Ahmed, a serious and very interesting problems with my windows 2000 which occured on Monday the 1st January, 2007.

On YESTERDAY when i log on my computer and open my Microsoft Outlook and received my email. After completion of receving TASK when i going to print my email i pres Ctrl + P but nothing appeared. I try again but nothing. Any how i copy past my emails in MS word and printed the same but there was working. I open Add/Remove program window from Ccontrol Panel but there was not itmes totally blank. Then i try to install any programme but "You dont HV sufficient space to intall the programe" but there was 10 gb free space. Today this morning i try to remove folders from Programe Files but there is no items totally blank i checked properties and afcourse folder size was about 2.gb and when i open Winnt folder there were also nothing and checked properties and size was 2.5 gb.

Do you know about this? It is very intresting.

Please note that every thing is working fine? No windows disturbance but Internet Explorer some time not working corrently.

Our office owns a Dell with Windows 2000 Professional. It was used by our GIS specialist until he LEFT for another job. It has sat unused for several months, but I needed to get some data off it recently. When I tried to log onto the computer with the typical username and password, it won't let me in. It says "The system could not log you on. Make sure you user name domain are correct then type your password again...." The name and password are correct. I've EVEN tried the adminstrator name and password. Nothing will work. I've tried downloading the ISO file other sites have recommended, but I can't get that to work either. Any help you could give me with bypassing or hacking into this computer would be great. We now have a machine worth hundreds of dollars just SITTING in our office being worthless to us!

Try to Run the Pc in safe Mode, And change the user and password SETTINGS from there.
Or..if there is no username & password now it would do this. When prompted to enter a name/pw...just hit ok & see if it'll log on that way.I tried both options. It still asks for a username and password when trying to enter via safe mode. And it still says the system can not log me on if I don't enter anything. Any other ideas?

SarahIt sounds like it is still expecting to be part of the Domain...contact the IT Admin and he/she should be able to provide a system password that will give you access.Sorry if I sound incredibly stupid, but what is the IT Admin? Is that Microsoft? If so, I think they charge for tech services. Any way around that?

This would be the person at work who set up/runs the computer equipment there...We are a staff of 3 and I am currently the most educated and versed in our computer technology. The computer in question belonged to our GIS specialist who has since left. I have already contacted him to brainstorm how to get into the computer, but neither of us have come up with anything else that works.

Let us know how it goes.I was looking for info on how to log on to Windows 2000 (Win2K) with a lost/forgotten password and read there is a way by installing another instance of Win2K, then when you reboot it will ask which of the two Win2K you want to use. You must pick the new one and log on as Administrator then from there you can access any files on the PC from The C Drive, Documents & Settings folder.

The only thing I don't know is how would I take off the othe instance of Windows after I'm done getting the files I need unless I do a clean install of Windows and get rid of both the current Windows, Format the drive and start fresh.

The 'SAVE TO DISK" option was a windows application. 2000 quite obiously doesn't have it I imagine

I don't have any of those programs and actually only have one drrive in my hard drive, this SYSTEM was my daughters and when I took it in for cleaning the tech notice 2nd drive wasn't WORKING so he removed it

So I imagine my QUESTION is answered now...I can take the cd's I made from WINME and play them on here no problem....I just cannot "burn" NEW ones without those prgrams you mentioned

This may or may not be specific to W2K, but I need to defrag the HD and when I run Windows defragmenter it tell me that I have 40% free space but 0% usable space. What's the deal with this.I would DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. website to see if that drive is healthy...
What is your swapfile set to ? ?swap file is set to 768 MB.As far as I can see the drive is healthy and the MFT is not showing to be overly huge. I tried a third party defragmenter with no better RESULTS. Any other ideas anyone?you tried diskeeper? LIKE it better than window's original defragmenter.

I recently upgraded my windows 98 to windows 2000. When i BOOT up, however, it SHOWS two windows 2000 OS and I have to choose which one to use. They are slightly different, one seems to be just a basic install while the other one is actually containing all my programs and files. How can i get rid of the Other OS I don't use? 1. Apparently when you want to MAKE a bootable CD from an ISO image, the CD burner program must be told to treat it as an "image burn" not a "file burn", otherwise you're just saving another file to CD. LOTS of tutorials on web thru google, but this post thread gave me some quick insight:

2. Test Memory MODULES and Slots. If you get memory errors during the test runs, record the locations. Then run the memory test again. If you don't get the same "bad" memory locations, the problem is probably outside of your memory module. Start with just one memory module, the 512MB. You might want to try it in different slots. After you have completely tested it (possibly verify all three slots are working if motherboard allows it), pull it out, and test the new 1GB memory module. Then if both modules test good, test them together to see if they're compatible with each other. Put larger one in front of smaller one. If that doesn't work put smaller one in front of larger one.

If you get the same bad memory locations each time, that module is probably bad or incompatible with your motherboard.


3. If system doesn't stay up long enough to test, I would look elsewhere for the problem, but continue to use the memory test to verify future changes have resolved the problem. If it's hanging on the memory test, your Windows operating system software and drivers were not the problem. I'd look to heat, bad/loose connections, and bad hardware (I'm not sure about power). You can either start with nothing and add on or start with everything and take off components.


4. Since it usually boots up, I'd start with power supply, motherboard, CPU, one stick of memory (probably 512MB), video card, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and floppy drive. There's also your BIOS configuration in CMOS. If you can't run in a minimal configuration you might want to reset your BIOS to its factory default settings.

5. Heat. I believe there are heat sensors on your motherboard that you may be able to read during CMOS setup. See what the temperature readings are. Generally if you remove heat sink/fan from CPU you need to reapply a thermal compound/paste between the connecting surfaces to help draw heat off CPU. Are all your fans supposed to be working?

6. IDE Cable. If you're using the newer PATA hard drives that operate at 66/100/133 (something?), you should have an 80-wire flat ribbon cable with a 40-pin connector. At those higher throughput speeds the old 40-wire cable won't cut it (will cause problems).

7. Hard Drive. What shape is your hard drive in? Most hard disk drive manufacturers have diagnostic programs on their web sites that you can download and run to check the integrity of the drive and its disk surfaces.Thanks again for all the help. I will complete these steps later. Yes all fans do work with the exception of one case fan. One fan was locked up when I went searching for the problem initially.

I don't think its heat related, I can have the computer unplugged all night then turn it on and it can freeze instantly. I will read up on burining it as an image.

Thanks!1. Memtest86 v3.3 Documentation. The best source for interpretating the test results is the "readme.txt" file for the test program. I got it from the floppy diskette version of the download and ran it thru Microsoft Word to add explicit to end of each line so it's readable by "notepad.exe". Let me try to attach it to this post. If it attaches successfully, read it; especially numbered paragraph 8.


2. I wasn't expecting "alot" of errors. Are these different memory locations or the same one (or few) repeatedly testing bad. How many "different" memory locations are testing bad?

If you're getting errors you don't have to test for 48 hours. Normally you test overnight only to ensure the memory is good (i.e. you're not getting "any" errors). Hit the "Escape" key to terminate the test.

Record the "bad" memory locations and as much information about them as you can. If you rerun the test and get the same "bad" memory locations, the module is probably bad. If you get different "bad" memory locations then those locations are not necessarily bad (problem may originate elsewhere, e.g CPU, cache L1, cache L2, motherboard).


3. If you've tested with 512 MB memory module and gotten errors, I'd reseat that memory card in the same slot and test again to see if it repeats with the same "bad" memory locations.

Then I'd remove it, plug in the 1 GB memory module in its slot, and test it. If you get errors, record them and try to analyze what's happening using the "readme.txt" documentation for the test. Repeat the test to see if you get same bad memory locations each time for 1 GB stick.

If either memory module tests clean, run the test overnight to make sure. Then I'd run with that one to see if your system is now stable running Windows operating system.

Memory module replacement method works best if you're using known good compatible memory (and we're not).


4. You know about the dangers of Electro Static Discharge (ESD) right? There should have been some installation instructions with that new memory module you bought.


5. When troubleshooting basic system failures you probably should be using the factory default settings. You don't want to be overclocking anything. Work within the normal settings. So if you continue to have problems you'd want to check your motherboard and BIOS settings for everything.

[getting disk space - attachment deleted by admin]I only see the "attached" documentation for Memtest86 v3.3 in my previous post if I am logged in. If you can't see it, TxOutlaw, when you are logged in (or otherwise) let me know and we'll have to make other arrangements. the module from slot 2 in slot 1. Run the test and if either the failing
bit or address changes then you know that the failing module is one of the
ones just moved. By using several combinations of module movement you
should be able to determine which module is failing.

3) Replacing modules
If you are unable to use either of the previous techniques then you are
left to selective replacement of modules to find the failure.

4) Avoiding allocation
The printing mode for BadRAM patterns is intended to construct boot time
parameters for a Linux kernel that is compiled with BadRAM support. This
work-around makes it possible for Linux to reliably run on defective

Sometimes memory errors show up due to component incompatibility. A memory
module may work fine in one system and not in another. This is not
uncommon and is a source of confusion. The components are not necessarily
bad but certain combinations may need to be avoided.

I am often asked about the reliability of errors reported by Mestest86.
In the vast majority of cases errors reported by the test are valid.
There are some systems that cause Memtest86 to be confused about the size of
memory and it will try to test non-existent memory. This will cause a large
number of consecutive addresses to be reported as bad and generally there
will be many bits in error. If you have a relatively small number of
failing addresses and only one or two bits in error you can be certain
that the errors are valid. Also intermittent errors are always valid.

All valid memory errors should be corrected. It is possible that a
particular error will never show up in normal operation. However, operating
with marginal memory is risky and can result in data loss and even
disk corruption. You can be sure that Murphy will get you if you know
about a memory error and ignore it.

Memtest86 can not diagnose many types of PC failures. For example a
faulty CPU that causes Windows to crash will most likely just cause
Memtest86 to crash in the same way.

Finally gave up and took it in... They called and basically said the motherboard was shot... I couldnt find another Abit SR7 - 8X so I guess im computer shoppin... Im not sure weather to buy another tower or to get a laptop. I use my cpu for work email, maps and microsoft office things... Any suggestions for me under 1000.00???

is there any solution for restoring Win 2000 PROF like we do in XP through SYSTEM restore or In Win98 using scanreg.If you have the operating disk,then you can use the repair mode,but
you will need to reinstall all updates.

A second hard drive as slave and 'Acronis' would be a really GOOD
approach.
To ADD a little to street1's advice, if you have another hdd just pull/disconnect your W2k drive and INSTALL XP. If you don't like it, swap 'em back. That's what I did when moving from W2k to XP.

Hey everyone.....

All of my users currently use .pst files to store their email. But, as of next year, .pst files will no longer be allowed in my organisation. Therefore, my users will need to save their emails to folders on their personal drives. The PROBLEM i have found, is that when an email is 'dragged and dropped' into the folder, its file extension changes to .MSG and the date the email was SENT is changed to the current date. Is there a way to retain the original email date and also, is it possible to save the emails as .eml files in Outlook 2000. My OS is Windows 2000 and there is no option to upgrade at this time.

Hello, my situation looks hopeless. Maybe someone can help. I attempted to overwrite windows 2000 professional over a previous INSTALLATION of Windows 2000 Professional, because the previous installation was having problems and APPEARED to be MISSING components. I made a terrible mistake and overwrote and formatted both the Drive/C and Drive D/ with Windows 2000 Professional (Please don't ask why or how)
Anyway, when I installed everything and restarted the computer....I no longer can install anything from the CD-rom drive....it seems to not exist anymore now. Windows 2000 Professional is working as it should, except the display adapters appear to be missing some colors in REGARDS to the pixels....but the real issue is that when I tried to re-install all my software....it doesn't read my CD-Rom drive anymore so I can't place any software disks into the CD-rom drive, as it says it is incorrect and doesn't read it.

I'm useing windows 2000 pro w/microsoft office 2000 and a Canon pixma MP170 printer. My problem is after first starting the computer it will print fine but after a couple of hours it won't print. I had it in for repair and they cleared the hard DRIVE and reinstalled the operating system. It STILL does the same thing. It shows that its comunicateing with the printer but does'nt print. I hooked the printer to my laptop w/windows XP and have no problem printing. Any sugestions? Check your power saver settings. Look if the printer can be shut down by windows to save power. I know some network cards can be shut down and when you go to use them they don't always start BACKUP. Maybe your printer is doing the same.

I will be working on the computerand it will go out and reboot the SYSTEM. It will then TELL me to "BOOT from CD" then "disk boot failure" then "insert system disk and press enter". Being an idiot I shut the computer off and RESTART and everything comes up normally until it happens again. Any ideas!!

I recently downloaded Microsoft Word 2000 onto my computer. I had been using OPEN Office freeware, but ever since the latest update, it kept crashing. If I were you...I'd purchase a legal version...Maybe I phrased it wrong. I purchased a disc, which is fully legal. It came with a certificate of authenticity. I installed the program from that. Since you uninstalled Open Office and installed Office 2000...none of your Open Office documents can be opened in Office 2000.

You can reinstall Open Office and use it for the documents you created with it.

If you still have Office 2000 installed...you may want to go to Office HOME and check for updates for that software as well.

Remember to have your Office 2000 CDs available...you'll need them for the updates...

I have managed to copy the FOUR intall discs for Windows 2000 Pro onto FLOPPY discs, which work fine until I am asked to insert the cd (I don't have one). This may sound trivial, but can someone tell me how to create a new ACCOUNT in OUtlook 2000 to receive and send my Msn email? I have been through every help screen and searched every where - even MSN directly, bo nothin tells me what to put in the incoming and outgoing mail server fields. All the help sites I've been to tell me to get that from my ISP - that would be MSN - and I have been unable to get it.
