Answer» Hi all, Have you tried uninstalling the modem in the control panel? Let's WAIT and see if he has tried this first...that modem may be fried.I'm not using a modem, this is a DSL connection, I'm using an Ethernet card.... you guys think that might be the problem?? I BELIEVE so as you stated that after doing some troubleshooting you were able to get to a Windows screen with the internet connection out. Keep it unplugged for now and run chkdsk /r on that hard drive and re-boot. and see if THINGS improve. If so a brand new NIC card is only 10 or 15 bucks...Got it!! I'll do a chkdsk /r and see what happends...Thanks for the advice. |

|
Answer» Is there any way to have a computer set to automatically boot to Windows 2000, but GET to 98 if needed? As in, instead of having the boot screen and choosing 2000 or 98, have it go straight to 2000 unless you hit some magic key(s) during start up that will bring up the dual boot screen? This might not be exactly what you're looking for but it the only way I can think of without having to mess with other bootloaders than the default windows one. You could set the time it was at the boot screen to be very low, like 1-2 seconds. Then the default OS would be loaded unless someone pressed a key within this time period. |

|
Answer» I need to know the PROPER syntax for setting up a login script to LOG into a networked drive. When you REBOOT the computer, it comes up with the login screen for the specified drive (Q:\) and if you don't login, the info cannot be accessed and applications on that drive will not function. Should be SIMPLE to set up, but I can't find a blasted thing on it. |

Answer» I'm running Windows XP and the Firefox browser. My question is Hi, I'm not sure where you mean by "file", but I've looked in "my recent documents" and it's not there, and it's not on a file search either.... it's vanished from the folder it was saved in?? It just doesn't make sense! And, this "folder" is on the flash drive, right? Did you have other files on the flash drive? Can you access them? Such a dilemma should be an incentive to improve your procedures in the future. For one thing, never work on a word processing file for a long time, e.g. for two hours as you did, without doing a save. Getting in the habit as saving often, say, every 5 to 15 MINUTES, will help prevent such losses. Also, unless this file is a sensitive document (based on content), I would not work off the flash drive as a normal practice. In other words, save that file to the hard drive and work off the hard drive. Then, when you've finished a session, copy the updated file the flash drive. However, if you prefer to work off the flash drive because you're working on someone else's computer and you want to leave no trace of the file on their hard drive, implement a procedure of periodically backing up the files on the flash drive to YOUR hard drive, or burn to CD, etc. |

                                    Solve : Windows 2000 - Accidental Reinstall? |

Answer» HEY; I've got Windows 2000 loaded on my computer and it was having a few problems so I popped in the repair disk and ran a repair; thought everything was GOING fine. The repair finished and my computer rebooted, and it came up with a message for Windows 2000 Setup, which I don't want to do, else I'll have all my files wiped. I rebooted my computer and took the CD out, but the setup thing still keeps coming up, though it fails because the CD isn't it. Any help to get back to my normal login and desktop? I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows... Does the Windows 2000 installer offer the choice to do a reinstall of Windows? If it does, do that, but only as a LAST resort! (Someone else should come by in a while, and hopefully, in benefit of you, they will have a better solution) It sounds as if you didn't choose "R" for a repair install... Travel Here for step by step instructions... If in fact R was not chosen and it still WANTS to run setup your bacon may be cooked.I feared as much; I'll try the repair one more time and if that doesn't work I'll just go ahead with the install. Thanks guys One thing you can try...absolutely no guarantees on this would be to move the drive into another machine as a slave and see if you can recover any data... As i said no guarantees. p.s. Don't try to boot to it, it will get you further AWAY from where you want to be. |

|
Answer» My computer goes to DOS at the command line and won't UW, he already said he used a registry cleaner. Unfortunately he did not say what. Some are a recipe for disaster. im confused when did i ask about a register cleaner or did the posterr post somewhere ELSE to??I used either Eusing or ToniArts(sp?) registry cleaner. Unfortunately I didn't write down the blue screen message, after I used the bootdisk I put in a command, I think it was sys c, for the PC to load from the hard disk. The next time I restarted it instead of the blue screen I had the black command screen. I don't have a restore CD but I might be able to find one. I might have downloaded a new firewall also, Kerio but I don't think it was installed yet. I'm really concerned about the data on the hard drive, I have family photos I never uploaded online so I'm really hoping I can at least retrieve that. SoniaEusing, i use this one.. if its DESKTOP then just slave it to another computer and see if you can get the data you WANT.. you dont have ant-virus or anti-malware on this computer??No, it's a laptop, does slave to another computer mean using the hard disk on another one? We have a desktop also but I have no idea how to go about that. I did have antivirus software , I took it off in the plans of installing a new better one, and didn't in time it seems... I did do a command of dir c: in dos and looks like at least some of it's there although I don't know what I'm doing in dos. I've also used Eusing and had no problem with it. You might get an external enclosure for a 2.5 inch hard drive, put your laptop drive in it, and then connect it to your desktop computer, assuming you have USB on your desktop. Here's one: iMicro IMBS25A-SI Aluminum 2.5" USB 2.0 External Enclosure - Retail Quote from: unlovedwarrior on May 10, 2007, 09:50:51 PM have you made any changes to the system? hardware software??I'll LOOK into the hookup for the desktop thanks, as far as any hardware/software changes, no hardware changes. I installed software from kworkshop.com recently. I also uninstalled some I don't remember. I don't remember what the blue screen message said but it was something about how it couldn't access my hard drive. I was thinking maybe whatever accesses the hard drive is not enabled? I can't log into safe mode at all. The last time I restarted it I did see the Windows logo come up for a second before the dos screen came up again. Quote from: soybean on May 11, 2007, 11:29:17 AM I've also used Eusing and had no problem with it. I'm amazed at the pricing on that soybean...i paid 7 bucks for just the 2.5" to IDE adapter cable just 2 months ago. Nice find.I'll be getting that external hard drive holder, thanks Soybean : ) |

Answer» Well, I cannot drag or move icons on my desktop, can't copy and paste. I can't open task manager using the CTRL+ALT+DELETE method. Also, after a while my desktop disappears. I didn't really have anything downloaded. This problem just OCCURED. I have no clue what to do and I need help. I cant open my volume control either, because it says no active mixer devices available, but it USED to work fine.We will need a bit more info on your system specs ,OS and what happened prior to thos to prevent a long winded guessing game...Need...more...info...gasp Then I found out the database of viruses was outdated and downloaded the newer one and it found over 8000 threats in my temporary folder. This is what is meant by supplying more info...your machine is badly infected and again it could be a number of things. First DLoad install and update the following: Don't run them yet. Spybot Search and Destroy AdAware Stinger AVG Anti- Spyware ( different than AVG Anti Virus. After updating and installing these shut down your machine. Dis-connect from the web physically router/modem. Re-boot into safe mode by repeatedly tapping F8 as soon as the machine is powered on. Run each scan and let it finish completely ( this may take awhile as it sounds as you haven't scanned in awhile) Let each program fix what it finds. After this run Disk Cleanup and defrag. These might also take some time. Power down and hook your connection back up. DLoad Hijack This and post the log in our virus and spyware section. It will take more than one post to get it all. We can then look further for nasties. Be patient...we'll get you there.Ah thanks for your help I will get right on that. You might want to print the instructions out as you will be dis-connected from the web for awhile... |
