Oh dear....

I picked up a second hand laptop.... Its great but the guy who set it up has a LOT of functions turned off, like at work. UNINSTALL program etc.... He also has my tcp/ip properties locked and I can't undate them to log in to my dial up from the road.

A little help would be very very cool on what switch to flip...

Did you get a WIndows CD to reinstall, if needed? Is he available to "fix it"? What version of Windows?

Its windows 2000 service pack 4. I hads to install all the service packs. Its a government SURPLUS PC so it came with a wiped hard drive that was reformated and win 2000 reinstalled.

All was well until I tried to install a usb network card. It must of changed a setting. Very select stuff I want to access such as ppp settings and DNS settings are locked.


Any other solutions.

Oh yeah its a P3 600 Compaq Armada e5000. I'd keep hunting a Win2KCD as you can do a non-destructive rebuild keeping all your data...
But in the meantime here is the default listing of default services and their settings...

Any ideas? If you did a clean re-install of the OS this shouldn't be happening.

I USE Win2000 professional.

When I extract a ZIP-file with WinZIP self-extractor, the program freezes / blocks. I had a similar problem before, in the case that the program stops responding when trying to run a 16-bit application.

In the task manager, the wowexec.exe was activated each time, so I suppose it has something to do with that. Maybe it is corrupt, can I reinstall this?

I have contacted DELL and XEROX and we have tried several solutions, including a Intel Chipset update.
They have advised to reinstall Windows 2000, but that is an easy way out of the problem! They told me to do that once before, when finally I was able to correct a BAD SETTING in the CONTROL PANEL - ADMINISTRATION - SERVICES folder.

Does that mean ...that after you install the o/s the drive isn't seen or do you mean that during the installation it ISNT being seen ........You need to be very clear on the issue.......

Just a few questions for you .......
What o/s was installed on this drive win 2000 pro or win xp or were you dualbooting ? Did you properly format ?
Did you successfully Fdisk the drive ?
Have you set the partition (s) as active ?
Are you using a boot disk to reload the o/s ?

I need to divide my hard drive into TWO partitions and install Windows 2000 Pro in both partitions. The COMPUTER is an HP with a 30 GB hard drive and a sticker on the front proclaiming it "designed for Windows 2000 Pro / Windows Me." It originally had W Me on it. I first tried an upgrade install, and that seemed to work ok, but I then learned that Disk Management couldn't ALTER the size of the partition containing Windows 2000. I've done three clean installs since. I reach a screen that asks me what size the new partition should be, but nothing on the keyboard will alter the size shown on the screen. The result is that Windows 2000 makes its own partition which takes up almost all of the hard drive. How can I get it to follow instructions?I think you need to format and partition into 2 partitions, then use win2000 cd to install.

1) Format harddisk.
2) Use win2000 or win98 boot disk, run FDISK.
3) In fdisk, I think there's an option to set how BIG is your partition. You can set to maybe 15Gb.
4) Once done, I think you can use win2000 cd to install. win2000 will then detect that there are 2 partitions, and ask you to select the partitions.

Hey this is my first post but I look forward to interacting more as time goes by. My problem is that my brother built me a new computer with Windows 2000 on it and everything was fine. But I had a friend who said he could upgrade to xp for me so I gave him my computer for the night and when I got it back he installed a full version of xp so now I have 2 os's. It is creating a little conflict and I WOULD like to start all over since I did not have the comp. long enough to put any important files on it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the xp full version (or the 2000). I dont mind formatting if I have to. Another wrench in the machine is that my floppy doesnt work so I cant make boot disks! I get a floppy drive failure MESSAGE when I boot up and I have tried 2 floopy drives. I would use the Win 2000 disk but my brother lives in Vegas and I in VA Beach so I dont have access to the software. I removed (format c:/s) WIN 98SE & installed 2000 PRO; all seems fine so far, but the monitor resolution is poor. Settings are limited to 16 colors, area range only 640x480 or 800x600. I've tried a few options in "Visual Effects", and that was some help but still a below-average resolution. I'm guessing that I need a new driver? The monitor is a Magicgraph 256, NeoMagic Corp.

See why you would want a NTSF to FAT. Now 2000 is in my computer, and working great, how do I covert it to NTSF without all the problems I had before?

Thanks.Since Win2k was released prior to WinME, moving from WinME to Win2k is considered a downgrade. If your Win2k disc is a Upgrade disc, not a Full Install disc, it won't work at all. If Full Install, you can reformat and start over.So you're saying if I have a full version of 2000, I can install this as if I were upgrading from say Me to XP? Or is it more complicated? And would I be able to keep all my files, etc.? Some programs would have to be reinstalled if they are not supported by 2000, RIGHT?

ThanksYou can't upgrade from ME. You can upgrade Windows 2000 professional from Windows 98 or Windows NT WORKSTATION.

You can install Windows 2000 on another partition and have a DUEL boot system or Take ME off and install Windows 2000.

Windows 2000 was primarily designed for the business networks; where as ME was designed mainly for the home USER.

Windows 2000 offers a better file system, better security, Encryption File System (EFS), and a more stable platform.

Both Operating Systems were released in the same year.Quote

I have been having problems with my Laptop losing connectivity. It keeps telling me that my driver to the standard 101/102 keyboard is PREVENTING the machine to enter standby. I've been all over the net trying to find out how to reinstall the drive. I think I must have CLOSED it when I was downloading some software for a camera I was using. That is when the PROBLEM BEGAN. re-boot laptop and hold down the f8 and chose the last GOOD config......if you can.......and disable system restore and disconnect from the net ......if you can and scan for trojans etc......is this an old laptop?

My CPU is running at 100% thanks to a process

Which OS are you USING? If you know the path to UDSERVICE can you tell us where it is?

You should be able to disable the service and locate the program and uninstall it. If you are running the UD Agent and want it to run under all accounts, there are other ways to ACCOMPLISH this. You will have to disable the UDService program. GO into task manager and stop the service from running. I am currently RUNNING W98 and am thinking of going to Windows 2000. My concern is that I may have to enter into the new Windows Approval system (WPA I think it is called) where you need to get an approval number to authenticate the software. No I don't think it is that, I understand that new Windows software is only valid temporarily until you get an identification number confirmation from Windows either on line or by telephoning their worlwide support. The reason being to prevent someone using an unlicensed copy. I believe it is is now standard on XP but I think it came in on earlier software also, so I don't want to go to W 2000 if I get stuck with this approval cycle. The capacity will show up as 4.99gb which is annoying but never mind. (When entering in sizes, make sure you enter the right unit. Eg don't enter 5 as in 5 gb when it's expecting the answer in megabytes, or you'll end up with a very small harddrive!)

After creating the first partion, it should ask how much you want in the extended partition. (This may be called extended logical drive or something similar, I can't remember exactly) Put in all of the remaining space. This is not a single partition but rather how much you want available for your remaining partitions. It is a common mistake to assume that it is a single partion, and enter in only a portion of the remaining space, and end up with wasted harddrive space. After you've created the extended partition, you can create 1 or more partitions within it.

Well I am out of drive SPACE I filled up my hard drive so I am getting a NEW one tomarrow. Lately my computer has been running kind of poorly and I have way too MANY PROCESSES on start up. I want to start fresh and keep all my files more organized this time. But there are a lot of files that I do not want to get rid of more than I want to burn to CD-Rs.

Upgraded on Pentium 100 machine that lists hard drive 0 (854MB) and hard drive 1 (811 MB). Before was showing as C: and D: . Formatted C: . Now shows only C: at 854 MB. Something on my WIN ME laptop is causing the hard drive to run nonstop when the machine is on but idle. A simple cleck on the desktop will still the drive for a minute or so, but it soon cranks up again. A related problem may be that the disk check after a faulty reboot is very slow, and scandisk takes forever as it continually RESTARTS with the message that the drive's contents have changed.

Clearly something is running that should not be -- as is confirmed by the system resource meter which spikes to 100% use of memory when the drive is running. But what?

How do I identify this pest and quash it?Hi, if you think this is a nasty have you tried scanning with an AV, Adaware and Spybot s&d? If these come up clean try process explorer from www.sysinternals.com this should give the process a name.

Well, I know from personal experience how BAD Windows ME really is. In my opinion, Windows ME never should have been released, becuase it has a LOT of errors. (That's why I upgraded to XP). As for your problem with memory, have you checked for viruses and spyware lately? Also, who is your computer manufacturer?

Problem now solved but via an indirect route. It may HELP others, so here's what I did.

First squeaky cleaned the laptop [Toshoba] with multiple AV, spy & anti-ad software. Problem still persisted. Then ran Process Explorer, which identified that some sort of indexing was going on complements of a file named mosearch.exe. This turns out to be the MS Office search service.

A Google search on the file name took me to CastleCops, where I found: "Mosearch.exe--Fast Search in Office XP - similar to the new revision of the Find Fast feature in Office 2000. Fast Search uses the Indexing Services in Office XP to create a catalog of Office files on your computer's hard disk. As with Find Fast - a waste of resources."

I have now disabled the function & the laptop no longer churns away all the time.

Yes, ME is flaky, but how can Microsoft build in something like this that not only wastes resources but also interferes so much with scandisk and defragging???

I have had this issue for 3 years now, at first I just thought it was my scanner and just decided to keep the resolution under say 300 dpi, and the colors were perfect, if I scan the same picture at 600 dpi for example, the color is bad, perhaps negative color, but the light and dark are not negative, the end result is an almost all blue and white picture (black and white)

well, I got a new video capture card, and the same thing happens, I capture at 230x 400 or whatever tv quality is, and I get a good picture, if I capture at the 700x whatever for DVD recording, I get a blue and white picture just like the scanner. Help please!!

I had windows 2000, had this issue.
now have a clean install of XP pro, still same issue. perhaps there is some bitmap encoder upgrade i need?(I think the video capture card is in bitmap mode. the scanner scanns in tiffs or something. both have identical issue.

it seems when the file reaches a certain size, the colors are dropped.

I have tried printing the picture to eliminate the video card and it comes out blue and white also.

some other colors are present in the blue and white like orange. but the peoples faces, etc are a shade of blue.

searched all over. cant find the answer.

MarkWhat scanner and what software is used....i would blame the scanner /software not the o/s...as much i would like to..!!well, the reason i cant blame the scanner is, the video capture card has exactly the same trouble and has its own driver and software.

but scanner is a optic pro 4830p scanner, and the original driver, updated from thier site.

the video card is a conexant btcap videocapture/tuner card, whitch also provides a good picture, until you increase the resolution (on the card, not the monitor)
then it goes bluewhite like a grayscale, but blue.

had the same sacnner on windown 98, and never had an issue.

just got the video card last year, but if remember right, i had a hauppage win tv card befor it, and it did the same.
at high res.

Have you updated all your drivers related to videocard, videocapture card and scanner with original drivers?well not within the last year, I will try to locate some, but windows xp doesnt say there is a newer one out, but maybe they just havent notified the mother ship about it.
good idea, will SEE what turns up on drivers, maybe that is it, calling on a 16 bit driver to produce a 32 bit result?

Need help with a little problem. I purchased a computer in a government auction, the computer boots up fine however when it GOES to open windows I get a window asking me for user name and password. I am an old user of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional. now a days i am facing problem with it. whenever i conect to Internet. i can not brouse HOTEL. i mean the EXPLORER stops accessing my inbox as well as HOTMAIL.What virus scanner and firewall do you use? Can anyone tell me what would cause your computer clock to advance very quickly in a very short time. I will tell you this is happening on more than one computer in my office.

Ex. 1 Clock was set at 10:00 this morning. At 11:07 on the computer clock it was actually 10:52. The computer was set to the time on a clock that is a function of our phone SYSTEM.

Ex. 2&3 I went in and set the clocks myself yesterday at about 3:00. By the time both girls left for work at 5:00 their clocks where about 15 minutes FAST.

Weird! about the same time difference. I have only been made aware of the fact within the last 24 hours so I cannot say for sure at what rate they will continue to advance but each advanced 15 minutes in 1 or 2 hours. That is a lot. Three hours in a DAY if EVERY 2 hours. They have not complained that the clocks are off by 3 hours by the next day so I am thinking no on the "continue to advance" idea.

I know if your battery is going out it can slow the clock or make you have to reset when you reboot by why 15 minutes then a very slow progression from there.

Any ideas would be appreciated.Wow. Your processor must be fast...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have seen dying CMOS batteries cause both speedup and slowdown of the system clock while the machine is shut down. There is usually no effect when the system is powered up.

Fast clocks while powered up could be a dying mainboard.That kind of scares me. I guess I should call the people who have our maintenance contracts. At least two of the three computers are between and year and a half to two years old. Can't have them die on me.

Hi, I've been TRYING to set up a wired connection between my Windows 2000 MACHINE and an old Windows XP machine I found.

My Windows 2000 machine is currently connected to a wireless network which lets its access the internet... However I also want to network the XP machine to it via a cable (So I can play LANs in my room ).

I've tried many ways in which to get the two computers to reconise each other but nothing I've done has worked. I set up the correct IP's (I think) which normally works between two 2000 machines, and I have router inbetween them both! Why aren't they reconising eachother!?

PS: They both reconise there is a LAN connection but can't ping or see eachother First off, I don't know where you FOUND the machine, but I can't help but think that someone would dump off a computer somewhere becuase they were having problems with it. (There must be a reason that someone LEFT it). Also, I'm not sure that mixing the operating systems like that is a good idea. That COULD be causing your problems.... Just install XP on the other computer if you can get a hold of an XP disk...

@Flame: I didnt just 'find' it in the the street lol... no no no, it was one of my dad's old ones, but he doesnt need it anymore... So I have commendeered it.

As for the different OS's well I dont really want to format my 2000 machine (let alone not having an XP cd) as it has alot of stuff on it, and i only just formatted recently... I also want to keep the XP OS on the other machine, as its usful for playing some of my older games!

@Robertmiller: I have set all the workgroups in the house to HOME. Also the ip addresses being USED between the two computers in my room is '172.168.12.X' but i dont know what you mean by the routers IP? Also the subnet mask is '255.255.0.0'.

@Neil: I do have a firewall on both machines but I have them disabled while I tried pinging does nothing it seems :S
Also it seems the networking wizard doesn't work on a 2000 machine (go figure), so that kinda buggered up.

VedanthI don't have Windows 2000, but if you right-click on the folder that you want customized, and you hit properties, FOLLOWED by customize, then I guess that would SOLVE your problem... HOWEVER, I use XP, so I'm not sure.....

Clicking on hybperlinks within emails doesn't result in anything; no ERROR messages & no action of any kind. The problem recently started and is in both email clients I am using: MS Outlook & Mozilla Thunderbird. I have tested multiple links over several days. The linking ability simply went dead.

But when I go to the email using my ISP's email program over the internet, the links work fine.

Hope I'm at the RIGHT place for my question. When I'm using word I have to save every few words because the system will freeze and I have to turn off without going to start to power down safely. I'm running 2000, 114GB. Not sure what other info. you might need. dl65 I don't know much about computers so please forgive me if I say something that is totally off the wall. I have AVG 6.0 and Ad-Aware SE Personal. I can sut down normal if I'm not using MS Word. I never use Excel at home only work and I have not had a problem with the freeze in PowerPoint. I installed MS WORKS Suite 2001 with word 2000 SR-1 over the weekend hoping this would HELP to re-install but I still had the problem when using word. I may have been able to type alittle more this time before the big freeze. ThanksWhen it freezes, press control alt and delete at the same time and wait for about 20 seconds. If the TASK manager comes up, then we will know that the whole computer has not froozen, just Word.

You have to delete partitions at reinstall, recreate them, format them, reinstall windows and... that's it. Better ask a good friend to help you. You can do it yourself if you have a little book to explain windows 2000 installing.

I have just fitted a new motherboard gigabyte 7VM333m-RZ, AMD 2400+ Sempron and 512MB ram and a DVD WRITER to my system, but windows 2000 boots up and I am unable to use the mouse or keyboard in the windows environment. There is no cursor at all.

The keyboard work as I can use it to get into the bios and to set windows to go to safe mode but the same happens there.

I do get an error message which is

“Run Dll. Error loading c:\winnt\downloaded program files\ bridge.dll The specified module could not be found.”

Because the mouse or keyboard doesn’t work I can’t get rid of the message.

Also after this is finds new hard ware and then sticks on new hard ware screen, asking you to load drivers for the new DVD writer.

I hope this is enough info for someone to help me

For the past few weeks, when I power up the laptop, after it comes up with the Dell logo splash screen, it goes to a blank screen and REFUSES to go further. Normally, the "Starting Windows" status bar would appear at this point, followed by the Windows 2000 splash screen before it PROCEEDED to the desktop. I now have to shut the power off again one or more times before the status bar appears and the laptop proceeds to bootup. Sometimes, it is once, sometimes more - it is a random number of times. With luck, next time you get the laptop boot up, go to the command prompt menu: Start menu-->program-->accessorites-->command prompt.

At the prompt, type in chkdsk/r, then reboot, the next time you manage to bootup, chkdsk is going to FIX whatever program in the MBR and boot sector. And it might even tell you whether your HD has virus.

KOh, one more thing, can you start with the win2k cd?
if you can that's easier, you can either use the method I mentioned before or use the winn2k cd's build-in repair function.

I have set up my laptop with no passwords at all for anyone. For years, when it booted up, the Administrator password prompt used to flash on the screen, then disappear and the PC would proceed to the desktop without any intervention from me. In other words, after I powered on, it would automatically come up on my desktop.

But lately, it stops at the password prompt until I hit Enter (remember - no password). How do I fix this? I SEE nothing in Users Control Panel or in the SYSTEM Console. I am not sure if one of my children accidentally entered a password for Administrator, which would have FAILED, anyway. I have not made any modifications on the laptop for this to happen. I also did a SEARCH for a PWL file, which turned up nothing:(

we use logon scripts on our NT domain to map drives for users based on the NT group they are in and using the IFMEMBER resource kit tool. I've noticed that some users dont SEEM to map the required drives. The clients are all NT 4 WORKSTATION and they are only set to use the one logon server in their lmhosts file.

Is there something I can put in the logon script in order to debug the logon process per user?

Okay Windows 2000 seems to be GETTING a BAD Pool CALLER error often. When I reboot it seems okay. EVERYTHING seems okay. The only software I am RUNNING right now is Norton System Works 2002.

I accidently CHANGE the properties of a system FILE, which is C:\winnt\system32\lsass.exe

Then, Windows 2000 cannot start up NORMALLY. If I lost my installation CD, how can I deal with this problem?

I KNOW that in good old DOS you could hold down shift and print screen and it would print whatever was on your screen. I am compiling a training MANUAL for several programs that I am running in Windows 2000 and I am trying to show the difference in what you see on the screen and what actually appears on reports and such that are generated. This is VERY relavent because things that do not show up on print outs are very important items to be entered. I will not be here to help whomever comes after me so this would be very helpful in the notebook.

Ok first it all started when I started up my computer and after I logged in and everything I end up just GETTING my background and nothing else. No start menu and no icons. I tried a diffrent accouint on my computer and i GOT the same THING. Then I tried the Windows 2000 repair thing and that didnt do anything to fix it. So I tried to reinstall windows and that ended up giving me more problems. It started to reinstall then when it restarted to go to the next part it didnt continue installing it it GAVE me a menu to Load Windows 200 Setup or Windows 2000 and I tried the windows 2000 setup and it brings me back to the first part again and reloads again and then does the WHOLE thing over. I have Road RUNNER and three computers. The output from the Cable Modem goes into the "Uplink" port on one of my 5 port LinkSys Hub. I have 3 computers. All three are connected to the hubs as follows, Computer 1: Output 1. Output 2 goes to another hub upstairs, which has that connected into the "Uplink", then the 2 Win. 2000/98 computers are connected to it.1 computer has Windows XP, and the other 2 dual boot 2000 Pro and 98. The one with XP and one of the ones with 2000 Pro and 98 connect to the internet fine. The third, however (both 98 and 2000 Pro) Show that they are "Connected" to the internet, but no programs that access the internet (AIM, MSN Messenger, ETC...) will not access the internet. Internet Explorer asks to WORK offline or "Try Again" when opened. When I click "Try Again" it says "The Page Cannot Be Displayed".

P.S. - When I select "Status" for the connection in "Network and Dial-Up Connections", there are PACKETS being sent but none recieved.

It is a home network connected by hubs.Then you have a server. The server requires to be online when the client (the other PC) wishes to be connected.

I can't seem to locate any info on this error message. The message shows up after log in name and password are entered.

I'm having a problem connecting to my friends computer via tcp/ip. We play madden 2004 on line, I havent had this problem untill I installed windows 2000 pro. I can play other games over the net using gamespy or the GAME locating engines packaged with the games. I tried pinging his computer, using the ping command in the dos block but it did not see his computer. If i remember correctly I had to turn off a firewall in xp to play this game with him but I don't know what to do in win2k.
