Answer» Hi, I did a search and did not find anything on this. I am having a very difficult time removing searchmiracle from a pc. I have tried using the following spyware removers to no avail. AdWare, Spysweeper, Microsoft's Spyware Cleaner/Remover & Hijack This. I have tried many suggestions on other forums to no avail. Any HELP is appreciated, I am a sys analyst so get as technical as you have to. I have already tried cleaning the registry and zero results, just can't remove this bug. BTW, all the spyware removers tell me they find it and delete it only to re-boot and find it again. Thank You in advance for any suggestions.Heckler......How about running hijackthis and posting the log file for us to look at ......I've been doing a bit of looking and it appears that it's the best tool to use to clean it up . Have you run CW Shedder , it will identify and temporarily reset your home page. dl65 Heckler.....I neglected to ask what o/s is on the infected PC? If you open your browser and go up to the "view" button and select toolbars .....does the elite toolbar show up there .......and if you go into control panel ......add/remove programs .........does Elite toolbar show up in there......if it does remove it .......but whats really required is the hijackthis log . dl65 Thanks for the quick response. It is running win2k SP4 I just re-booted the pc after running AD-Ware complete scan and so far no pop ups...not sure if this may have gotten it. Let me know what you think. Here is the log file... Solve : Can't enter hard drive partition size? |

|
Answer» I need to divide my hard drive into TWO partitions and install Windows 2000 Pro in both partitions. The COMPUTER is an HP with a 30 GB hard drive and a sticker on the front proclaiming it "designed for Windows 2000 Pro / Windows Me." It originally had W Me on it. I first tried an upgrade install, and that seemed to work ok, but I then learned that Disk Management couldn't ALTER the size of the partition containing Windows 2000. I've done three clean installs since. I reach a screen that asks me what size the new partition should be, but nothing on the keyboard will alter the size shown on the screen. The result is that Windows 2000 makes its own partition which takes up almost all of the hard drive. How can I get it to follow instructions?I think you need to format and partition into 2 partitions, then use win2000 cd to install. |

Answer» Hey this is my first post but I look forward to interacting more as time goes by. My problem is that my brother built me a new computer with Windows 2000 on it and everything was fine. But I had a friend who said he could upgrade to xp for me so I gave him my computer for the night and when I got it back he installed a full version of xp so now I have 2 os's. It is creating a little conflict and I WOULD like to start all over since I did not have the comp. long enough to put any important files on it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the xp full version (or the 2000). I dont mind formatting if I have to. Another wrench in the machine is that my floppy doesnt work so I cant make boot disks! I get a floppy drive failure MESSAGE when I boot up and I have tried 2 floopy drives. I would use the Win 2000 disk but my brother lives in Vegas and I in VA Beach so I dont have access to the software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.nobody? Also another problem that I forgot to MENTION was that I can't do anything in Add/Remove Programs. I click on a program (in windows 2000) and the change/remove buttons are unclickable. If I do it in Win xp nothing shows up in the list.you have to go into c-drive and open protected operating system files and then go to boot folder and delete win 2000 or xp from start up,also there is no programs installed on your system if it is a fresh installWell I have been USING Win 2k and I have installed programs, but when I go to Add/Remove programs there is a big blank space but when you scroll down, they are all there. But when you click them to remove them, the button is unclickable. So it is recognizing them but not giving me access to them.you could keep win2k as a back-up>>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223188Quote Well I have been using Win 2k and I have installed programs, but when I go to Add/Remove programs there is a big blank space but when you scroll down, they are all there. Answer» Quote ...Installed 2000 as a FAT 16 and all works great... http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htmSee why you would want a NTSF to FAT. Now 2000 is in my computer, and working great, how do I covert it to NTSF WITHOUT all the problems I had before? No expert on NTFS, but I believe converting from FAT to NTFS can cause trouble with file CLUSTER sizes? It would probably be best to format your harddrive directly to NTFS.Quote See why you would want a NTSF to FAT. Now 2000 is in my computer, and working great, how do I covert it to NTSF without all the problems I had before? NTFS allows for many additional security features on drives, directories and files. Not necessary for a single user MACHINE, but handy in a multi-user environment. Administrator can control software installs and prevent users from doing those that access system. Directories and files can be blocked from certain users or all users EXCEPT administrator. Thanks to All. Have the computer working great. Big differance from 98SE. Thanks for all the help. Could not have done it without all the HELP. Thanks. |

Answer» Is it POSSIBLE to upgrade from Me to 2000? Me has been buggin' out on me off and on now for a couple of months. I've scanned for viruses, defragmented, reinstalled programs, and uninstalled all non-essiential programs, but it's still not working properly. ...I'm aware Win2k was released prior to WinMe, but isn't it a better OS anyway? And I'm sure Microsoft doesn't consider going from Me to 2000 a supported path, right... Win2k is far superior to WinME. Win98SE is far superior to WinME. WinME is like Win98 with no DOS. I would just keep WinME and create a dual-boot. My concern is that I may have to enter into the new Windows Approval system (WPA I think it is called) where you need to get an approval number to authenticate the software. Is this just something introduced for XP Pro or does it apply to W 2000 also ? I also have Windows ME so that would be my second choice if no approval required.do you mean this>>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310637 or winxp activation.......Merlin WPA (Windows Product Activation) does not apply to Windows 2000. I've installed this several times, genuine licences with different companies.Windows ME and 98 are fairly similar... personally I preferre 98. It wouldn't be upgrading to ME as such, more swapping... |

Answer» Upgraded on Pentium 100 machine that lists hard drive 0 (854MB) and hard drive 1 (811 MB). Before was showing as C: and D: . Formatted C: . Now shows only C: at 854 MB. Tried Partition Manager - No help. I've created a monster of a mess on a machine that doesn't belong to me. Please tell me how to fix!! :-/ Also, in the process I lost the internet connection. Control panel shows only "Make new connection" icon. Wired to Road Runner.Did you format hard drive 1? I believe 98 and 2000 use different filing systems - 98 uses the FAT32 system (or FAT16, but you'd have to be a bit thick to stick with that!) and 2000 uses NTFS.format C: from Command Prompt. D: not recognized by format command. Don't remember some attempts following and then after installing Win2K I used both the CD to Repair Installation and then the Win2K boot disks. Have been TRYING for WEEKS so all the twists and turns of this are confused in my mind. I chose NTFS wherever the option was open. How do I know if hard DISK 0 &1 are physical distinctions or virtual? And how do I reclaim the missing 811 MB?try again>>.http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/win2k/upgradew2k/indexfullpage.htmThank you, but I am already past the point where I can upgrade. Win98 is long gone and I have lost HALF of the hard drive space. I need to reclaim that first. Am I posting under the wrong topic?Quote 1. How do I know if hard disk 0 &1 are physical distinctions or virtual? 1. Look inside the computer. 2. 1600MB or 800MB is not LARGE enough for Win2k. Your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for Win2k. Answer» Dear HELPERS, and forum members, but windows xp doesnt say there is a newer one out, but maybe they just havent notified the mother ship about it. Donot use Windows XP drivers. Use original drivers instead.Well problem persists, I have updated to the manufacturers latest driver and no change. am i just calling on the device to produce a larger image than it was designed to do? it is as if there is a buffer in the computer, that will hold a certain size picture, and when I exceed that limit, the file gets trashed, the color info anyway. I say in computer, because my video captyre card, is taking snapshots of the video, is suffering the same, when I call on it for a bigger picture, it goes bad exactly the same way. on the other hand, i have another software for capture, that has bugs, but it will capture a large image from my card perfect, called videowave 5, but it occasionally crashes without warning for unknown reasons, and I would rather not have to use it. the program that has the blue pic issue is called my dvd, it is a better software, but they say it dont support the card. but i think it would, if I could straighten out this whole blue picture thing, because my scanner does the same thing at higher resolutions. is that the nature of an image when a software calles on a device for more / different stream of data than it can produce? the scanner is the optic pro 4830p the tv card is the conexant 878a perhaps I need a high dollar card and driver for this....and a new scanner? but I dont wish to if that is not the problem.....the scanner will do a good picture at 1200 dpi at 1x1 inch sixe.....so wonder why it fails at 3x3 inch size, until you lower it to say 200 dpi, then it will do an 8x 10 perfect......go figure. is the entire image stored on an internal buffer then sent as one blip to the pc after completion, and the large amount of data is just too much? but then back to the TV card...wonder why it has the same issue, and it is fairly new, so you would think it could handle the resolutuion........ it came with some crappy vcr software, i may re-install that and see how high tthe original software would take it? but i remember it was not user friendly and that is why i like the my dvd software. hmmmmm. but that dont explain the scanner.....so interesting quandry here. anybody else have a scanner? what happens if you scan a 1200 dpi image at a large size like mmm 8x10, he he, does it WORK? thanks for all the suggeations. beavisRead the 36 bits/24 bits article>http://www.scantips.com/basics14.html THat was a useful article. the problem still persists though. I have found a workaround for now. interestingly, if I use the software that came with my video capture card, the image looks good, and I will continue using it. it however does not exactly explain the scanner, unless my scanner simply cant scan a photo that large in that great of detail. perhaps that is just the failure RESPONSE to such a demand. thanks for all the help. it at least put me in adirection I could find a solutuion to my video capture problem, which was new software for making DVD's and using the capture program that came with my card, rather than a capture program within the DVD authoring softrware. merry christmas to all 1beavis.........Your scanner ...............the optic pro 4830p , was designed for Win 95 and win 98.......... Probably you didnt have any problems using either of those o/s.... However once you pushed it by using Win xp .........odd things happen. I see this issue has been on going for 3 years......So it cant be that BIG a deal to you . Why dont you simply purchase a newer scanner .....one that is designed to function properly with Win Xp . I have looked at various driver updates for that scanner and have found a number which say they may or may not work properly with Win XP ......Further , I don't believe you have anything wrong with your new Vid card .........the problem is with the software you are using to drive the scanner ........ Maybe Santa will bring you a new one for Christmas ... Cheers dl65 |

The other thing I have noticed is that the keyboard lights "num Lock" is on but I can not turn it off by pressing the key, when you press "caps lock" the light doesn't come on. This looks like to me that the ports are not active when windows is running. How can I turn these on when you have no interface with the computer? Help!!! Andrewold pc.....what old pc....have a look in the bios and see if the keyboard and mouse is abled..or just chose f9 setup defaults....have you plugged in graphics card...Thanks everyone I resolved this by repairing windows 2000 on the drive, this reinstalled the proper drivers. Alt-PrtScrn copies the active window to the clipboard, then PASTE into MS Word or whatever application you are using. Shift-PrtScrn copies the entire screen to the clipboard. YES! YES! YES! That was exactly what I wanted. Thank you. DebYou can copy and paste all kinds of stuff into MSWORD (or PowerPoint or Excel). When you perform Copy, instead of Paste, look at Edit, Paste SPECIAL. There will be many options depending on what is being copied. |

Answer» Ok first it all started when I started up my computer and after I logged in and everything I end up just GETTING my background and nothing else. No start menu and no icons. I tried a diffrent accouint on my computer and i GOT the same THING. Then I tried the Windows 2000 repair thing and that didnt do anything to fix it. So I tried to reinstall windows and that ended up giving me more problems. It started to reinstall then when it restarted to go to the next part it didnt continue installing it it GAVE me a menu to Load Windows 200 Setup or Windows 2000 and I tried the windows 2000 setup and it brings me back to the first part again and reloads again and then does the WHOLE thing over. Any Ideas on how I can fix either one of these?have you tried the win2k repair option?yes i have it didnt workmight have to re-install entirelyIf you wish to reinstall Windows, it is better to format first.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315396&sd=tech |

Answer» I took one of my computers' hard drive to Best Buy to get it cleaned. I got it today, made some Windows 2000 boot disks, and tried to load them onto the computer. HOWEVER, after I finish loading the first boot disk and start the second, it gives me the error message "SETUPREG.HIV Could not be loaded. Press any KEY to exit". Can SOMEONE PLEASE tell me what's GOING on?? http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/win2k/installw2k/page1.htm Thanks for the link, Merlin, however, when boot up with the CD in the drive, nothing HAPPENS... All I get is the message 'Operating system not found'. Set your first boot device to CD-ROM using the BIOS. |

Answer» I have Road RUNNER and three computers. The output from the Cable Modem goes into the "Uplink" port on one of my 5 port LinkSys Hub. I have 3 computers. All three are connected to the hubs as follows, Computer 1: Output 1. Output 2 goes to another hub upstairs, which has that connected into the "Uplink", then the 2 Win. 2000/98 computers are connected to it.1 computer has Windows XP, and the other 2 dual boot 2000 Pro and 98. The one with XP and one of the ones with 2000 Pro and 98 connect to the internet fine. The third, however (both 98 and 2000 Pro) Show that they are "Connected" to the internet, but no programs that access the internet (AIM, MSN Messenger, ETC...) will not access the internet. Internet Explorer asks to WORK offline or "Try Again" when opened. When I click "Try Again" it says "The Page Cannot Be Displayed". |
