He also has my tcp/ip properties locked and I can't undate them to log in to my dial up from the road.

A little help would be very very cool on what switch to flip...

I'm logged in as as an admin

Did you get a WIndows CD to reinstall, if needed? Is he available to "fix it"? What version of Windows?

(You will need a real Windows CD eventually, you know.)I'm trying to track down the cd...

Its windows 2000 service pack 4. I hads to install all the service packs. Its a government SURPLUS PC so it came with a wiped hard drive that was reformated and win 2000 reinstalled.

All was well until I tried to install a usb network card. It must of changed a setting. Very select stuff I want to access such as ppp settings and DNS settings are locked.

Any other solutions.

Oh yeah its a P3 600 Compaq Armada e5000. If you did a clean re-install of the OS this shouldn't be happening.
All Admin stuff goes out the window when this is done.
How did you PROCEED with this re-install ? ? ?THANKS I finally got it working after 2-3 reboots and deleting the old dialers...

Now I'm battling USB network cards... I guess the win sp 4 drivers don't get alone with the D LInk USB network card. Error code 31? I hate that Yellow sign beside the device manager!

Any idea if there is a patch to help with thisQuote

Thanks I finally got it working after 2-3 reboots and deleting the old dialers...

Now I'm battling USB network cards... Solve : Can't enter hard drive partition size?

Answer»

I need to divide my hard drive into TWO partitions and install Windows 2000 Pro in both partitions. The COMPUTER is an HP with a 30 GB hard drive and a sticker on the front proclaiming it "designed for Windows 2000 Pro / Windows Me." It originally had W Me on it. I first tried an upgrade install, and that seemed to work ok, but I then learned that Disk Management couldn't ALTER the size of the partition containing Windows 2000. I've done three clean installs since. I reach a screen that asks me what size the new partition should be, but nothing on the keyboard will alter the size shown on the screen. The result is that Windows 2000 makes its own partition which takes up almost all of the hard drive. How can I get it to follow instructions?I think you need to format and partition into 2 partitions, then use win2000 cd to install.

1) Format harddisk.
2) Use win2000 or win98 boot disk, run FDISK.
3) In fdisk, I think there's an option to set how BIG is your partition. You can set to maybe 15Gb.
4) Once done, I think you can use win2000 cd to install. win2000 will then detect that there are 2 partitions, and ask you to select the partitions.

cheers

Answer»

Hey this is my first post but I look forward to interacting more as time goes by. My problem is that my brother built me a new computer with Windows 2000 on it and everything was fine. But I had a friend who said he could upgrade to xp for me so I gave him my computer for the night and when I got it back he installed a full version of xp so now I have 2 os's. It is creating a little conflict and I WOULD like to start all over since I did not have the comp. long enough to put any important files on it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the xp full version (or the 2000). I dont mind formatting if I have to. Another wrench in the machine is that my floppy doesnt work so I cant make boot disks! I get a floppy drive failure MESSAGE when I boot up and I have tried 2 floopy drives. I would use the Win 2000 disk but my brother lives in Vegas and I in VA Beach so I dont have access to the software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.nobody? Also another problem that I forgot to MENTION was that I can't do anything in Add/Remove Programs. I click on a program (in windows 2000) and the change/remove buttons are unclickable. If I do it in Win xp nothing shows up in the list.you have to go into c-drive and open protected operating system files and then go to boot folder and delete win 2000 or xp from start up,also there is no programs installed on your system if it is a fresh installWell I have been USING Win 2k and I have installed programs, but when I go to Add/Remove programs there is a big blank space but when you scroll down, they are all there. Solve : Upgrading from Me to 2000 Professional??

My concern is that I may have to enter into the new Windows Approval system (WPA I think it is called) where you need to get an approval number to authenticate the software. Is this just something introduced for XP Pro or does it apply to W 2000 also ? I also have Windows ME so that would be my second choice if no approval required.do you mean this>>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310637 or winxp activation.......Merlin

No I don't think it is that, I understand that new Windows software is only valid temporarily until you get an identification number confirmation from Windows either on line or by telephoning their worlwide support. The reason being to prevent someone using an unlicensed copy. I believe it is is now standard on XP but I think it came in on earlier software also, so I don't want to go to W 2000 if I get stuck with this approval cycle. Since it was going to use 98, I formatted as FAT32 each time I used this command.

Used fdisk to create two partions: a 5gb one for Windows and important system utilities only and left the rest for programs and data. (The advantage of this is if your computer messes up, usually you can just format the first partition to replace Windows and keep your current documents.)

Remember to set the partition with Windows as the active partition. Decide wether 5gb will be enough for your needs. 5gb is 5120mb exactly (5 * 1024). The capacity will show up as 4.99gb which is annoying but never mind. (When entering in sizes, make sure you enter the right unit. Eg don't enter 5 as in 5 gb when it's expecting the answer in megabytes, or you'll end up with a very small harddrive!)

After creating the first partion, it should ask how much you want in the extended partition. (This may be called extended logical drive or something similar, I can't remember exactly) Put in all of the remaining space. This is not a single partition but rather how much you want available for your remaining partitions. It is a common mistake to assume that it is a single partion, and enter in only a portion of the remaining space, and end up with wasted harddrive space. After you've created the extended partition, you can create 1 or more partitions within it.

When this is done, you will need to reformat your new partions again. eg format c:. If you already have an existing harddrive inserted and don't want to lose its data, make sure you unplug it before you do this to be safe. If you can't/don't want to, then one way to check is typing this:

x: where x is the hardrive letter, c, d etc
dir If you get an error message, the disk is not formated. Solve : Windows98 upgrade to 2KPro?

Answer»

Upgraded on Pentium 100 machine that lists hard drive 0 (854MB) and hard drive 1 (811 MB). Before was showing as C: and D: . Formatted C: . Now shows only C: at 854 MB. Tried Partition Manager - No help. I've created a monster of a mess on a machine that doesn't belong to me. Please tell me how to fix!! :-/ Also, in the process I lost the internet connection. Control panel shows only "Make new connection" icon. Wired to Road Runner.Did you format hard drive 1? I believe 98 and 2000 use different filing systems - 98 uses the FAT32 system (or FAT16, but you'd have to be a bit thick to stick with that!) and 2000 uses NTFS.format C: from Command Prompt. D: not recognized by format command. Don't remember some attempts following and then after installing Win2K I used both the CD to Repair Installation and then the Win2K boot disks. Solve : scanned or captured files turn out blue !!!!!?

Answer»

Dear HELPERS, and forum members,
I have had this issue for 3 years now, at first I just thought it was my scanner and just decided to keep the resolution under say 300 dpi, and the colors were perfect, if I scan the same picture at 600 dpi for example, the color is bad, perhaps negative color, but the light and dark are not negative, the end result is an almost all blue and white picture (black and white)

well, I got a new video capture card, and the same thing happens, I capture at 230x 400 or whatever tv quality is, and I get a good picture, if I capture at the 700x whatever for DVD recording, I get a blue and white picture just like the scanner. Help please!!

I had windows 2000, had this issue.
now have a clean install of XP pro, still same issue. perhaps there is some bitmap encoder upgrade i need?(I think the video capture card is in bitmap mode. the scanner scanns in tiffs or something. both have identical issue.

it seems when the file reaches a certain size, the colors are dropped.

I have tried printing the picture to eliminate the video card and it comes out blue and white also.

some other colors are present in the blue and white like orange. but the peoples faces, etc are a shade of blue.

searched all over. cant find the answer.
you may also e-mail me at [emailprotected]

Thanks
MarkWhat scanner and what software is used....i would blame the scanner /software not the o/s...as much i would like to..!!well, the reason i cant blame the scanner is, the video capture card has exactly the same trouble and has its own driver and software.

but scanner is a optic pro 4830p scanner, and the original driver, updated from thier site.

the video card is a conexant btcap videocapture/tuner card, whitch also provides a good picture, until you increase the resolution (on the card, not the monitor)
then it goes bluewhite like a grayscale, but blue.

had the same sacnner on windown 98, and never had an issue.

just got the video card last year, but if remember right, i had a hauppage win tv card befor it, and it did the same.
at high res.

whats the deal?
Have you updated all your drivers related to videocard, videocapture card and scanner with original drivers?well not within the last year, I will try to locate some, but windows xp doesnt say there is a newer one out, but maybe they just havent notified the mother ship about it.
good idea, will SEE what turns up on drivers, maybe that is it, calling on a 16 bit driver to produce a 32 bit result?
hmmmm

wonder if that compatibility wizard in xp would help either?

hmmmm. good ideas guys.

if i find an answer i will post it, if no, keep in mind if you hear a fix for this.

beavisQuote

but windows xp doesnt say there is a newer one out, but maybe they just havent notified the mother ship about it.

Donot use Windows XP drivers. Use original drivers instead.Well problem persists, I have updated to the manufacturers latest driver and no change.
am i just calling on the device to produce a larger image than it was designed to do?

it is as if there is a buffer in the computer, that will hold a certain size picture, and when I exceed that limit, the file gets trashed, the color info anyway.

I say in computer, because my video captyre card, is taking snapshots of the video, is suffering the same, when I call on it for a bigger picture, it goes bad exactly the same way.

on the other hand, i have another software for capture, that has bugs, but it will capture a large image from my card perfect, called videowave 5, but it occasionally crashes without warning for unknown reasons, and I would rather not have to use it. the program that has the blue pic issue is called my dvd, it is a better software, but they say it dont support the card. but i think it would, if I could straighten out this whole blue picture thing, because my scanner does the same thing at higher resolutions.

is that the nature of an image when a software calles on a device for more / different stream of data than it can produce?

the scanner is the optic pro 4830p
the tv card is the conexant 878a

perhaps I need a high dollar card and driver for this....and a new scanner? but I dont wish to if that is not the problem.....the scanner will do a good picture at 1200 dpi at 1x1 inch sixe.....so wonder why it fails at 3x3 inch size, until you lower it to say 200 dpi, then it will do an 8x 10 perfect......go figure. is the entire image stored on an internal buffer then sent as one blip to the pc after completion, and the large amount of data is just too much?

but then back to the TV card...wonder why it has the same issue, and it is fairly new, so you would think it could handle the resolutuion........

it came with some crappy vcr software, i may re-install that and see how high tthe original software would take it? but i remember it was not user friendly and that is why i like the my dvd software.

hmmmmm.

but that dont explain the scanner.....so interesting quandry here.

anybody else have a scanner? what happens if you scan a 1200 dpi image at a large size like mmm 8x10, he he, does it WORK?

thanks for all the suggeations.
beavisRead the 36 bits/24 bits article>http://www.scantips.com/basics14.html THat was a useful article. the problem still persists though. I have found a workaround for now. interestingly, if I use the software that came with my video capture card, the image looks good, and I will continue using it. it however does not exactly explain the scanner, unless my scanner simply cant scan a photo that large in that great of detail. perhaps that is just the failure RESPONSE to such a demand.

thanks for all the help.
it at least put me in adirection I could find a solutuion to my video capture problem, which was new software for making DVD's and using the capture program that came with my card, rather than a capture program within the DVD authoring softrware.

merry christmas to all 1beavis.........Your scanner ...............the optic pro 4830p ,
was designed for Win 95 and win 98.......... Probably you didnt have any problems using either of those o/s....
However once you pushed it by using Win xp .........odd things happen. I see this issue has been on going for 3 years......So it cant be that BIG a deal to you . Why dont you simply purchase a newer scanner .....one that is designed to function properly with Win Xp .
I have looked at various driver updates for that scanner and have found a number which say they may or may not work properly with Win XP ......Further , I don't believe you have anything wrong with your new Vid card .........the problem is with the software you are using to drive the scanner ........
Maybe Santa will bring you a new one for Christmas ...

Cheers
dl65

Solve : computer system clock gaining time?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me what would cause your computer clock to advance very quickly in a very short time. I will tell you this is happening on more than one computer in my office.

Ex. 1 Clock was set at 10:00 this morning. At 11:07 on the computer clock it was actually 10:52. I have only been made aware of the fact within the last 24 hours so I cannot say for sure at what rate they will continue to advance but each advanced 15 minutes in 1 or 2 hours. That is a lot. They have not complained that the clocks are off by 3 hours by the next day so I am thinking no on the "continue to advance" idea.

I know if your battery is going out it can slow the clock or make you have to reset when you reboot by why 15 minutes then a very slow progression from there.

Any ideas would be appreciated.Wow. Your processor must be fast...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have seen dying CMOS batteries cause both speedup and slowdown of the system clock while the machine is shut down. I guess I should call the people who have our maintenance contracts. At least two of the three computers are between and year and a half to two years old. Solve : Networking A Win2000 machine to a Win XP machine?

Answer»

Hi, I've been TRYING to set up a wired connection between my Windows 2000 MACHINE and an old Windows XP machine I found.

My Windows 2000 machine is currently connected to a wireless network which lets its access the internet... However I also want to network the XP machine to it via a cable (So I can play LANs in my room ).

I've tried many ways in which to get the two computers to reconise each other but nothing I've done has worked. I set up the correct IP's (I think) which normally works between two 2000 machines, and I have router inbetween them both! Why aren't they reconising eachother!?

PS: They both reconise there is a LAN connection but can't ping or see eachother First off, I don't know where you FOUND the machine, but I can't help but think that someone would dump off a computer somewhere becuase they were having problems with it. (There must be a reason that someone LEFT it). Also, I'm not sure that mixing the operating systems like that is a good idea. That COULD be causing your problems.... Just install XP on the other computer if you can get a hold of an XP disk...

[glb]Flame[/glb]First check that they are in the same workgroup
What ip addressess have you got on the machines and the router?
What subnet masks?

Here is a link to some USEFUL information about networks:

http://www.rcmillar.netfirms.com/subpages/Links.htm#NetworksHave you tried the networking wizard?
Do you have any firewalls active?
The router could be faulty?Firstly I'd like to say thanks for the replies!

@Flame: I didnt just 'find' it in the the street lol... no no no, it was one of my dad's old ones, but he doesnt need it anymore... So I have commendeered it.

As for the different OS's well I dont really want to format my 2000 machine (let alone not having an XP cd) as it has alot of stuff on it, and i only just formatted recently... I also want to keep the XP OS on the other machine, as its usful for playing some of my older games!

@Robertmiller: I have set all the workgroups in the house to HOME. Also the ip addresses being USED between the two computers in my room is '172.168.12.X' but i dont know what you mean by the routers IP? Also the subnet mask is '255.255.0.0'.

@Neil: I do have a firewall on both machines but I have them disabled while I tried pinging does nothing it seems :S
Also it seems the networking wizard doesn't work on a 2000 machine (go figure), so that kinda buggered up.
And good idea I'll quickly try switching routers This may you>http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/netgeneral/
