Solve : Directx 9.0?

Answer»

Hello, I am having trouble installing directx 9.0. I am trying to install need for speed most wanted and when I try to install directx 9.0 off of the game cd I get an error saying "directx did not copy a required file" and when I try to install directx 9.0 febraury sdk then I get the error -5. I am running windows xp pro.I even tried this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891890 but dxxpdbg does not exist.Maybe you should download DirectX from Microsoft: Microsoft DirectX DownloadsI did, but I downloaded it again from your link and it downloaded nicely, went to install started and then "directx did not copy a required file".I have service pack 1 installed if that helps. Why not go ahead and upgrade your OS to SP2? That, in itself, may fix the problem. Even if it does not, you're better off with SP2.Because after installing ps2 in our lab computers at school and also friends have reported the same, sp2 causes all kinds of headaches.I followed these steps and I am almost there.
Try these steps mate

1. Delete the folder CatRoot2 from C:\Windows\System32 (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\System32 (if Windows 2000).
2.The DirectX folder under C:\Windows\System32 (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\System32 (if Windows 2000).
3. The {44BBA855-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} folder under
C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\RegisteredPackages (if Windows 2000).

Try the installation of DirectX and it will succeed

Now it installs directx BUT at the final end like right when its 100% it fails and says check the log so I did and it is error -9. And according to the error code list from Microsoft
-9
(INTERNAL) Setup detected an internal error. There are only two situations known to cause this error message: • Dsetup.dll could not load the Dsetup32.dll and Dsetup16.dll files.
• Setup attempted to call a unicode version of Setup Advanced Programming Interfaces (APIs), which are not implemented.
If you receive this error message, rename the Dsetup16.dll and Dsetup32.dll files. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
2. Type the following line in the Named box, and then click Find Now:
dsetup16.dll
3. Click the file, and then click Rename on the File menu.
4. Change the name to a .dxx extension. The file name should READ as follows:
Dsetup16.dxx
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the Dsetup32.dll file.
6. Reinstall DirectX.

I searched for dsetup16.dll and found nothing while dsetup32.dll came up with 4 results and still searching. I will continue and see what happens. If this works I will be able to help alot of people looking for help on this topic in other places. Solve : Windows XP and Word 2000?

Answer»

Hello, I hope this is the right place to post this :-/.

We've recently bought a new PC with Windows XP installed on it. We're running Word 2000 on it. The problem is that the Word documents do not look like they did when running it on Windows 98; they're much smaller and don't fill the screen.

In other words, the document stretched out across the entire page on Word in 98 but does not fill the page widthways in XP.

Much searching of Word and XP has ensued but we're still none the wiser as to how to change this and, basically, get back the 'look' of Word as it ran on 98.

Any ideas?

Thank you. I have used office 2000 in Xp for a long time and I didn't have any problems. Are you 100% sure that you have correctly configured the page? or maybe you just have to change the zoom level or the view.

Just guessing....Are you also using a different size monitor now? Are you using the same resolution on your monitor as you used with Win 98?

Have you tried the different Views for Word 2000? With Word 2003, if I select Web Layout view, the Word document spreads across the entire Word screen. If using Normal view, have you tried just changing the right margin setting, to move it further to the right?I've altered the zoom and the view but while they make a difference they don't make things the way they were on 98. If you change the screen size then it affects the FONT size and the two don't seem to marry correctly.

The monitor size, is the same, in fact it's the same monitor. Altering the resolution doesn't help either.

But thanks for taking the time to read and reply; it's greatly appreciated. You're probably in a different viewing mode. Try each of the OPTIONS on the view menu (at the top of that menu), until you find the one that you're used to.Thanks for that.

It makes some difference but it seems IMPOSSIBLE to get the screen to look identicle to how it did with 98 despite the fact the monitor is exactly the same.Shine:

Try clicking the middle button in the upper, right-hand CORNER of Word (the one with a square on it). That should restore the window up.

DocI have Windows XP and I have installed Word 2000. It WORKS fine for me.
I am sure you have already tried it, but click VIEW, then click PRINT LAYOUT. If that doesnt work, click VIEW and then click NORMALL.
Are any of these the same as what you had in 98?Hi, I think that the problem is resolved pretty much now. Certainly, adjusting settings and sizes has made it as close as possible to the old view. It seems the fact that XP has a smallest screen resolution of 800 x 600 and 98 has a slightly different size is what was causing the trouble; it makes it impossible to get exactly the same screen view.

Many thanks for all attempts made to help!

Solve : Outlook - all emails have attachments?

Answer»

For some reason, and only recently, almost every email I receive from anyone has an attached .txt file accompanying it. The content of the .txt file is whatever is in the body of the email and the name of the file is the subject of the email. I contacted my hosting company who handles my email, and they said it's a problem with OUTLOOK. When I did as you instructed and changed it to plain text, that is when the attached .txt file showed up. Is there some setting I need to change so that when others send me emails I don't get the .txt attachment? Solve : clock out of sync??

Answer»

I have been doing that repeatedly. It still won't install the software upgrades. I've been searching for them elsewhere, and have found 2 of them so far...I remember Microsoft used to have some downloads that were dependent on other ones FIRST being installed & the computer being re-booted but that was years AGO with win98.
Are these critical patches from Microsoft?Eureeka!!! I found the software updates by doing a Google search and downloaded them. Now I can get the list of updates from Microsoft. I couldn't have gotten that far without your help. Many thanks!!

Yes, they are critical updates, but for Windows 2000 (althought it is upgraded from 98se)Windows 2000, you are a wise PERSON. (Unblonde)
I hope we helped you somehow.Yes, you were very helpful. Many, many thanks. Keep up the GREAT work!!Had many other problems and had to fdisk, format and reinstall Windows2000. Everything else works, except Windows Update scan. There is another place to get these critical updates if anyone else has this problem:

www.softwarepatch.com/windows/

It would be easier if the danged update scan would work, though. Microsoft--go FIGURE [smiley=angry.gif]

That is strange, a clean install and the M$OFT updates still didn't work :-?
Did you change any settings at all before trying the update? No, I just installed the OS. Then went straight to Microsoft Update. When I went to their troubleshooting, they had the error I got ( 0x80072F8F), and it just said to make sure my time and date and time zone are correct (which they were), then to Run regsvr32 SOFTPUB.dll. from the start menu (succeeded), but still not fixed. Maybe the problem is on their end?Firewall setting perhaps?

You should temporarily turn off any real time AV when downloading/installing MS updates.I went for the MS updates before installing the firewall & anti-virus programs (ZoneAlarm) when I reformatted. Thanks for the replies and all the advice. I'll keep trying... Meanwhile, any more suggestions? You should never connect to the internet or any other public network without at least rudimentary firewall protection. You may well have been infected, it only takes seconds.I wonder if the 98SE--->W2K upgrade has any bearing on this?
Do you know anyone with W2K disk? No, I don't know anyone with a 2K disk. But the first time I formatted and installed the upgrade, the update worked. And the 2nd time. Yes, I tend to reformat whenever I have a major problem. It just seems easier. I'm definitely no computer genious (I leave that to you guys). [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I know I shoudn't connect to the web without the firewall and anti-virus, but I wondered if that was stopping the update from working. Don't think it was, though. If I were you I'd get a copy of a full version W2K disk, it's not cheating as you do have 98SE + the W2K upgrade.
Then do a clean install. Your firewall shouldn't cause any problems with Windows updates but it seems that ZA6 is fast beoming a pain in the wotsits.
Your real time anti virus should be temporarily disabled whilst downloading/installing Windows updates. It can cause major problems.

If you decide to buy a copy of Win2K, try and source a version with SP4 already slipstreamed.

Solve : CD-RW ,ME , will play won't record?

Answer»

Hi, Compaq Presario 7000us ME 2000 windows here. Hope SOMEONE has had this problem. I put a blank disc in to record and it is not recognised as being blank, Ive tried four different brands of disk . I ran the quick restore cd's which came from Compaq. I was prior to that running windows XP which was installed by a friend of a friend. The PC came with windows Me . Adaptec is the program that came with it to creat cd's . Oh it will not let me change the rc-rw drive alpha . I have deleated both drives from the properties and let the PC put them back which made no difference. USED the auto search for updated drivers and the drivers are already the most updated. Is there any way to check if I have a physical problem with the re writer part . I was able to copy cd's prior to getting some kind of virus which may or may not been part of my problem. My floppy disk will record . Thanks for reading this .You've got corrupted device files somewhere then. A reinstallation is the sure fire way to resolve this, although if you can possibly avoid reinstalling ME, so much the better. Replace it with 98SE or XP! (If you have a LICENCE for ME, you are automatically LICENSED for earlier versions of Windows too.)Thank you for your response , A bad FILE some where in there makes sense. Here`s the problem , I have reinstalled Me four or five times. When I had XP and the virus I couldn`t dump the hard drive through the DOS comands , I had a co worker that walked me through that process he is no longer available. So I wonder if I still have things running or maybe just stuck in the hard drive that keep corrupting my Me windows. I think before I reinstall anything I should do that first. I may be calling it the wrong thing , it was through the run programs window . I forget what I had to type in how ever I know it works because I watched the guy that installed the XP deleat the hard drive. So if you've read this far would you be able to tell me the comand , then I`ll know that is or is not the problem. Thanks again

Solve : Batch file W2K3: Create DIR w/today's date, etc.?

Answer»

I did a quick search and could not find what I need. I have tried this on my own and came very close... but no cigar!

Here is my scenario: I have COMPUTER out in the SHOP that contains all the CNC programs we USE daily in our manufacturing process. This computer up-loads and downloads these CNC files from each of several machine tools via hardwire and a port switcher. Several semi-qualified people send/receive these files daily, and they manage to "hose up" files constantly. I do a normal back up every night, but some times a file is CORRUPTED and we don't know it until 6 months later. My back-ups normally only go back a maximum of 8 weeks.

I now have plenty of network storage available and would like to COPY (not BACKUP) the directory (about 35 MEG) once a week to a network folder. What I attempted to do was write a batch file to be run on my utility server as a scheduled task. What I want it to do is; create a DIR named as "today's date", and copy the target directory in its entirety, then close.

My last attempt would create the new Dir and name it properly, but then it copies the target directory to the root instead of the newly named DIR. I'm sure it is just an issue with me being "SYNTAX" challenged. Solve : domain or workgroup?

Answer»

why is it in windows 2000 if you have a domain set up and you CHANGE it to a workgroup you kill the os basically?? I'm serious cause I tried safe mode and safe mode with networking nothing i just want some help to understand what happened in this instance so that i dont repeat it.I don't know what are you talking about. I haven't had this PROBLEM.If you want to understand we r not going to explain sos
Google
YEah viking i dont what he is talking about :-?OK let me explain in windows 2000 you can be part of a domain and if you changed it to be a part of a workgroup you lose your username and password and so in order to correct it you have reinstall the os so it basically kills the os and i want some understanding of why it happens like that. generally you will only encounter this problem if you try to do file and print sharing. Is the computer actually part of a domain? If so then yes taking it out of the domain would get rid of the domain user name and password. In that case you would have to use a local username and password. Like the administrator account. You may also have to change it to log into the workgroup and not the domain.

To get your username and password back re-join the domain that you left. Then you should be able to log into that machine using your domain username and password.

Other than that I don't see what your problem would be.um that would be nice if using the admin log worked!!Your user configuration is stored on the Server rather than local computer. So when you return to the workgroup you get disconnected from the server and lose all the information stored on the server. In Domain you don't have much to do with local users...still doesnt explain it it sounds greek to me.Ok when you are logging in and you are at the log in screen where you put your username and password in. Look around for a second. You may have to hit the options button but there should be another place. Make sure you're logging into the workgroup. Then use the local administrator account.

If it's still set to log into the domain then it won't work.

Once you get logged in you should re-join the domain.

Re-joining the domain,
1) Right Click "My Computer" at the Windows 2000 Professional Station and select "Properties"
2) Select the Network Identification TAB and click Properties.
3) In the Member of Section shown below, click the Domain box and type in the domain you wish to join and Click OK.
4) You will be prompted to enter a user name and password from the server that has permissions to join computers to the domain. (use the servers administrator user name and password). You may be prompted to reboot the client .

like i said the admin account did not work and so i have no idea what i did wrong on that system never trust me to enable file and print sharing...even though i work for dell....although this screw up happened on my own computer...still do not trust me....recommend going to file and print sharing websites for that otherwise ill make a mess out of a computer. For leaving or joining a domain you need some advanced user rights. And at least local administrator rights. Are you a local administrator for your computer? Also, for enabling file and printer sharing you need administrator credentials (local account, local administrator for that computer).
When you leave a domain (and join a workgroup), you may only use local users accounts (users that do not need to use credentials from a server to log on). Long story... Of COURSE, if you know the account password.
It is your home computer? Or it is a work computer? If it is from work, talk with the network administrator (he will tell you some nasty things, he will reproach you...), he should be able to solve your problem.

Solve : Multitude of problems....BIOS/Windows/Harddrive?

Answer»

Things never are as easy as it is planned. I bought a Maxtor 200gb harddrive and was gonna start with a fresh install of XP Pro. So i hooked the only the new harddrive and ran the software to format and partition it. Well it said to first GO into the BIOS and check to see if it recognizes the harddrive first. Did that and exited the BIOS. After the harddrive was formatted and partitioned, i restarted the computer and it goes to the blue banner screen for Dynamic Drive Overlay and states to "press spacebar to boot from diskette or press C to bot from CD-ROM." Well a 1/2 second after that is displayed i get a Disk Read Error and to hit control alt delete to restart the computer.

Well crap, so something is up with the new drive or the software. May i mention the software frequently locks up before i get it to format. It took me about 8 times before i could get through it all the way. Anyhoo, so i figure i'll take out the new harddrive and put my old one back in and do a file swap from one harddrive to another and then just reinstall windows. Well with only my old harddrive in, it will give me the black XP screen with the bar going back and forth, and then goes to the blue screen with the small Windows XP icon. Normally it would load windows from there and then go to the login screen. Instead it is hanging up at the blue screen. I've let it sit for 20 minutes and it still stays on that blue screen.

The computer i am working on is an old HP XT953 with a P3 1.0GHz and was originally Windows ME. I had upgraded to Windows XP Pro SP2 and that is what is on my old harddrive now. When i go into the BIOS, it gives me three options for the types of windows in a drop down box. One option is "Other", the next option is "Win 95", and the last option is "Win 98/2000". I've had it on all three types and it still hangs up. The BIOS i have on the computer is a PhoenixBIOS Core Version 4.06 BIOS Revision 2.10 05/08/01. All i want to figure out is how i can go back into windows. I've tried going into Safe Mode, using the last known good configuration, i've tried them all and they all get stuck at the same spot. Please help me! If you need any more info let me know. For some reason i can't get my bootdisks to work either on this computer and it says that windows was unable to format the disk. When it rains it pours!

I've also loaded Default Settings in the BIOS and still won't go into windows. Running out of options hereUsing overlay software is to be avoided if at all possible! Remove it now and forget Windows for the moment, let's get the hardware sorted out first.
Does the BIOS actually see the drive and does it REPORT it's full size?Quote

...So i hooked the only the new harddrive and ran the software to format and partition it. Have you checked the documentation for the motherboard to see if it supports hard drives as large as 200 GB? Many Windows Me systems shipped with hard drives smaller than 10 GB. Have you checked the Web site of the motherboard manufacturer to see if there is a flash upgrade for the BIOS?

DocWell here is the funny thing. I have the updated BIOS and the computer originally came with a 40GB harddrive. A few months after i got the computer i added a 160Gb slave for all my games and files. That one installed in a cinch and i partitioned it into 4 separate 40gb drives. I'm not a guru with computers so please correct me if my assumtions are wrong, but if you partition the harddrive into smaller drives that are less than the 137Gb it really doesn't matter if the BIOS is able to handle larger drives. Is this correct? At first, i tried using the Maxblast software in DOS cause i wanted the 200gb drive to be my bootdrive. Well it kept giving me a disk read error, so i hooked up my 40gb boot disk along with the 200gb and booted up windows. When i got into windows and ran the software, it would only allow me to transfer all the files from my 40 to my 200 but i wanted a clean install of windows. The drive partitions showed up in My Computer. While i was in windows, a warning window popped up and said that the system is not setup for drives larger than 137gb and if i wanted it to turn on those settings. It said it had to adjust the Registry and the screen blanked and restarted windows. Well since then i am not able to get back into windows and this is scaring me. I had most of my files backed up, but there are a few files on my desktop that i would like to save. Is there any way i could get into my old harddrive to retrieve some files? Reinstalling windows on that drive would delete the files in My Documents and the Desktop.

I'm getting a set of boot disks for XP Pro TODAY at work. My previous set gave me an error on disc 4 saying a file was corrupt. I'm trying to install windows on yet another drive, 80gb (yeah i'm getting desparate to get into windows here). As far as the 200gb, i put in a bootable Win ME cd and it goes through the initial setup and then aborts the install saying that the harddrive wasn't found. It said that either the cables aren't hooked up or the drive wasn't initialized and that i need to run FDisk. I don't feel comfortable enough with FDisk to know what i'm doing.

One other note. I removed the DDO from the 200gb and when i restart the computer it goes to a black DOS screen and says Disc Read Error. It doesn't check the disc drive or CD drive or nothing. I'm thinking i may have a defective drive.

If anyone could help me get back into my old harddrive i would appreciate it!!!! I tried going into safe mode, and even reverting back to a known good configuration and nothing works.

I'm not sure if i can get a BIOS upgrade from the mobo manufacturer cause it is an HP computer. Since it isn't a retail mobo, the only updates i can get are through HP and they haven't had an upgrade in a few years. It does have the upgraded BIOS though. In the BIOS, it recognizes the harddrive and states that it is 137gb and not the 200gb.The bottom line is that you'll need a hard drive equal to or smaller than the BIOS limitation size for this computer to reliably operate.
You could try the overlay software again but it's definitely not to be recommended.Quote
The bottom line is that you'll need a hard drive equal to or smaller than the BIOS limitation size for this computer to reliably operate.
You could try the overlay software again but it's definitely not to be recommended.

Does it matter if that harddrive is partitioned into drives smaller than the 137gb barrier? Or does the bios recognize the hardrive as its full size regardless of how many partitions it has? Thanks for the help everyone!

Solve : Help with Templates in Outlook (Add Margins)?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a question about the Stationary or templates in Microsoft Outlook.

I would like to use the template in the picture.

Tool -> Options -> Mail Format -> Stationary Picker -> Glacier

The Problem when choosing that stationary is that it automatically adds an extra line after each time you hit enter…. So that the signature has line breaks between each line!

To try and counter this problem I created a new Stationary with a blank Document and choose the Background for Glacier. This worked for getting rid of the Extra Line break after each time you hit enter. But Now every new email starts with no left margin. The text starts at zero on the ruler rather than .5 where it should start to avoid TYPING over the darker color in the Glacier Background.

So, I don’t know how to fix this, I’m open to all ideas. I don’t see a place to add a margin to the stationary. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks

Patrick
[emailprotected]

Have you tried just dragging the Left Indent bar on the ruler to the right? That should do it.That will work for a single email, but I have to do that Everytime.

And Even If I do that, if a Person replies to my email, their text goes back to not having a Margin.

Well, I can't relate to your preception of this as a problem. I'm sure the template was designed on the premise that the typing to the far left would be on top of the darker background. Seems to me it's still quite readable.

I really don't know of any other solution right now.Quote

Well, I can't relate to your preception of this as a problem. Seems to me it's still quite readable.

I really don't know of any other solution right now.

Sorry I didn't make it clear.

Under the factory template "Glacier" the emails are set up with a Margin so that the text does not overlap the darker stripes. But the factory template also has the stupid double spacing. I created the "Glacier 2" template to get rid of the double spacing, but I don't know how to add the margin.Hmmm, I'm unable to duplicate the behavior you describe for the default/factory template; mine does not double space when I hit Enter.

I'm using Outlook 2003. I just added that template after reading your post. When I did so, my system asked me to insert my FrontPage 2000 CD. So, perhaps my system is not setup the same way as yours. To insert the Glacier background, I actually insert a THEME, not a Background. Both are on the Format menu.

I have no idea why my system installed this Theme from my FrontPage 2000 CD instead of asking for the Office 2003 CD. But, my Glacier Theme looks identical to yours.

I guess this really doesn't help you. Hope someone else has a suggestion.Hmm... I'm on Outlook 2003 also ... I think that is the latest, New computer at the office.

I described the process I did to get to "Stationary" in my first post. You don't create a new message first.

If I create a new message and select theme, I don't have Glacier listed as an option.

This isn't really a problem, there are a COUPLE of those themes I'd rather have.

But I don't see any options to get those themes to apply for Every New message and not just a single message.

Is that possible?Go to TOOLS, Options, Mail Format, and select the stationery you want under Stationery and Fonts, in the box labeled "Use this stationery by default:".I get a completely seperate list for Themes and Stationary...

It sounds like you get one list for Themes and Stationary..

The only stationary in that list that I like is Glacier, and that is how I came to my first post.

Is there a way to get my themes into my stationary list. No, I have many more themes than stationery; over 80 themes, about 24 stationeries. I don't know of way to get themes added to your choice of stationery. If I learn of a way to do that, I'll let you know. I'd also like to know.4jacks, I have an idea. Send me a private message by clicking on the PM button here in the forum. I'll email you the file to add Glacier to your stationery. You simply need to copy it into the folder where your Stationery is stored. On my system, I found them at F:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery. My OS is installed on F:\; change that as needed for your system. Let me know if interested.

Also, here's a reference with some info on creating new stationery: http://faculty.eicc.edu/golson/outlook/#stationery. This came from a Google search.Sent you a PM!

I currently have Glacier in my Stationary, just not my Themes..

I'll try the file though, maybe your Glacier, doesn't have the stupid double spaces.

Thanks.stinks, I don't have permission to save in that folder :-?

It's already in there though, same files, so I'm not sure if it will get rid of the double spacing.I believe you could copy my files into some other folder and then tell Outlook where the files are. If you open Stationery Picker (from Tools, Options, Mail Format), click on New, select "Use this file as a template:" and then Browse to the location of the file, that should work. I don't think stationery has to be in the standard folder that holds the usual stationery. You might want to change the name to Glacier2 or such.

Apparently, you don't have administrative RIGHTS on that computer.
