I'm positive its the right update
Flash- Current- Asus BIOS version 806 being upgraded to version 1104When I enter the Bios flash utility it won't read my floppy disk for some reason that i dont know.

The version is- AsusTek EZ Flash 2 BIOS ROM Utility V3.06The problem is one of four things:

1) Bad floppy drive
2) Bad floppy disk
3) You don't have DOS boot files on your floppy (autoexec.bat, config.sys) EDIT: MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS, per BC_Programmer
4) Improper floppy boot sector
- i.e.: you formatted the floppy using Windows Explorer in XP or VISTA, but didn't select "Create an MS-DOS boot disk"
- in this case, the boot sector is not looking for MSDOS.SYS or IO.SYS. It's looking for NTLDR, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini (for NT, 2000, XP, Server 2003) or bootmgr and boot\bcd (for Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7)

For #3 and #4, just select "Create an MS-DOS boot disk" and format away. Copy your BIOS files on the floppy afterward (if they fit).

For #2, try a new floppy.

For #1, either replace the floppy drive or use a USB floppy (just make sure the BIOS can boot from a floppy).

On the other hand...

If you want to avoid using a floppy altogether, you could make a bootable CD that emulates a floppy.

1) Download VFD:

2) Set up a virtual floppy disk to use drive letter A. You may have to disable or disconnect your physical floppy drive for this purpose.

3) Format the virtual floppy. Again, remember to select "Create an MS-DOS system disk."

4) Add your BIOS flash utility and APPROPRIATE file to drive A.

5) Unmount the virtual floppy.

6) Use a program like Roxio or Nero (I'm sure a few others as well) to create a bootable CD. Use the virtual floppy image you created as the boot image.

7) Burn your CD.

I run a trivia section on our website and I am looking for a FREE program that can snip parts of songs, legally obtained. I would cut a 3-5 second part of a POPULAR rock or standard song and add it to the site and ask our CLIENTS to "Name That Tune". Any suggestions on a program that can do this?

I have removed 'Quicktime' from my computer via the 'Add Remove; Control Box' facility; however there is STILL a 'QT' shown in the 'Add/Remove' list but states it is not removeable.

I have a LIFECAM VX3000 and until a few months ago, I could test the audio portions of the cam before sending and receiving calls. Then, suddenly the menu became unaccessible: I could click on it then it would disappear.
So I decided to uninstall the software and after wandering thru the Microsoft web site, found the software and DOWNLOADED it.
Problem solved, right?
Wrong. The downloaded screen didn't show a menu at all!!!

Hi everybody

I'm using MS Word 2000, and somehow I managed to make my toolbars and menu BAR vanish (even though the help files tells me it cannot be removed). I've SCOURED the help FILE (all the advice references the menu bar that I can't see anymore), toggled various views (to make sure I wasn't just LOOKING at the document funny) and nothing I do restores the bars.

By headset, you mean a device with mic and EARPIECE, right? I think it would help if you can tell us what you want to accomplish in this scenario? ya, a HEADPHONE and Mic.

Take a look at PLANTRONICS Audio Switch 3.5mm Connector Speaker to headset switch. I think it may be just what you need.

i downloaded simcivilization4 to my COMPUTER and i ran it and my computer said "MSVCR71.dll not found" so i downloaded an msvcr71 file and extracted to my windows\systems32 folder as i was instructed to do. that didn't help so i then went to "start" "run" typed CMD an then typed regsvr32msvcr71.dll and then rebooted. now it's telling me "DLL "msvcr71.dll not a valid windows image" *censored*? i just want to play my game. any ideas? thanksThere's no such game in existence as "Sim civilization 4"

I am trying to DENY the copy commands in excel 2007. I have figured out how to deny the save COMMAND but there seems to be no option to disable copy. You can ALSO "hide" the ribbon but that would still allow a user to select a section and copy it. any help on this would be appreciated.

I use simple Folder GUARD or My Secret Folder to HIDE my secret data. You know if u hide a folder with Folder Guard it will also WORK against "Show all Hidden Files" in folder option. Can anybody explain this concept?

Use VLC Player to play .mp4 files.

I just installed my new 8800GS yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good fan control app for my 8800GS. I've tried nTune, and RivaTuner. nTune just messed up my driver's GUI control panel to the point where it crashed every time I opened it. RivaTuner is up to date, but complains that the driver is unknown to it.

I'd like to force my GPU's fan to its max so it doesn't get to 50C. I know that's pretty cold for an 8800GS but, my computer already rivals my air conditioner in noise, and I can't hear it with my headphones on, so why worry about more noise?

If anyone knows of a good GPU fan control app that will work with my 8800GS, please tell me. The cooler I can get the hardware to operate at, the longer it will last. Though, ironically, my 8800GS is running WAY cooler with stock cooling than my old 7600GT, it would run upwards of 150F trying to run COUNTER Strike: Source maxed out.

Its not really needed, so don't go out of your way searching if you don't feel like it. I just like to keep my hardware as cool as possible, unless its something like my laptop that has a warranty. If the GPU or whatever goes out in my laptop, its covered, but if my desktops GPU goes out, I'm just short $85 and without a computer that can properly handle PixelShader 3.0 apps worth a crap.

As a note, the game pushing my 8800GS to 122F is Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion, rather boring game, but I installed it to see if i could actually get a glimpse of what the game is supposed to look like. And if you WANT to know my laptop or desktops specs, there all listed in the lil specs bubble.SpeedFan.Rivatuner will work fine.
Just ignore the message about unsupported drivers, it's worked fine for me with them.
patio, I'm not sure if Speedfan can usually control GPU fans, it's never worked for me.Thanks, but, after digging past many useless google'd pages, I found out the fan is hardwired to run at 100% all the time. Speed fan doesn't work for any GPU fans I've seen, and RivaTuner wouldn't DETECT any fan sensors, so I'm guessing the fan really is set to run 100%, anyway, sorry for the delay. And thanks for the response, as for anyone else who asks, just tell them its set too 100% all the time. Because of it running the fan 100% at all times, I do not recommend this GPU for any system that must run quietly. Its quite loud, not as loud as either of the two front "Quietek" 80mm fans, nor is it the loudest fan in my computer, but it is still VERY loud for most systems.That's odd, I never knew that about the 8800GS.

The case itself ships with 5 fans...even still i don't see it being much louder than the Dinosaur AMD machine i buried.

P.S. My 8800 GTX is running at 48 currently cause i just checked.Ok, I just installed a GTX260 and was looking for a good fan control. I found "EVGA Precision" to work very well and its compatible with many different MANUFACTURERS (XFX being one of them).

After defragging with the inbuilt tool, Diskeeper and Smart Defrag, it seems that some files are still fragmented even though Smart Defrag reports zero fragmentation on completion of its run. Below is a report on the $MFT metadata file after defrag and it appears to be fragmented or am I not interpreting the results correctly? Is it possible that no defrag tool is allowed access to system files?

Did you buy Microsoft Office? If not, then apparently you just had a trial VERSION that came with your computer. Please clarify this POINT. How did you get Office in the first place? I received your PM; I'd like to reply to that here. You asked about alternatives to Microsoft Office. Yes, there are free alternatives. OpenOffice.org is the probably the best known freeware alternative to MS Office; it's a full-featured office suite with word processing, spreadsheet, etc.

If you merely wanted a basic word processor, you could get AbiWord. But since you mentioned word processing and spreadsheet, you might as well get OpenOffice.org and use it's word processor.

I installed XP on to a new HARD drive. I still have the old hard drive with all of the files.

I have imported my old .pst, so I now have all of my folders, emails, contacts.

I had several email accounts SET up. is there a way to GET this off of the old hard drive?
I can't boot up using that hard drive. I have tried and tried. the OS is corrupt and i wasn't able to REPAIR it, but I can still access all of the files on that drive just fine.Unfortunately, Outllook does not have a built-in export feature for email accounts. There are third party tools that can be used to do this, such as this: http://www.backsettings.com/outlook-backup.html. But, it's too late for that. On the plus side, with only several accounts to re-create, this should not be a big deal.

Hi, I've been using AVS Video CONVERTER 6.2 (free edition) to convert video .flv files to MP4 video so that I can play them on my iPod. I started doing this about a month AGO, and with only a few snags managed to do this fairly EASILY. These videos will play in iTunes.

I synced my iPod with iTunes for the first time in about 6 weeks today, expecting the new videos to upload. They did not. I received an error message that "the videos were not copied because they cannot be played on this iPod".

I already have a video on the iPod, a DVD that was converted using DVDNextCopy, but none of the MP4s will copy to the iPod.

This iPod was a hand-me-down GIFT, so unfortunately I don't have all the information for it, but it's a 30GB iPod video, I think it's a 5.5g.

I did a search on Google, and some guy who had a similar problem fixed it by changing the settings from PAL to NTSC (he lived in the US, I live in Canada); however, I a) don't know if this is the problem, and b) don't know how to change the settings in AVS even if it is.

Any help that anyone could offer with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to resize RECEIVED photos within OE? Instead of converting your Xvid to DivX, try running it through MPEG4Modifier.

A week or so ago, I searched for "jpeg" in search. Up came all the jpeg images and graphics stored on my COMPUTER. I found a huge cache of pictures, some that had been lost for a long TIME. I can't remember how I did that!
I've TRIED everything to bring that page back up and cannot do it.

Every time I use EITHER one of my dvd drives to watch a movie, my pc shuts down about 30 seconds after the movie starts. This happens when I use windows media player or the ati dvd player. Does ANYONE have any idea why this would HAPPEN Either your Power supply is weak or the DVD Drives are taking too much power.
Have to tried to dis connect either of the drives?...or OVERHEATING....

Hi. My current setup is this:

CABLE Modem --> Cable ROUTER --> Xbox 360

However, when I perform a connection test I am told that the DNS server couldn't resolve the names of the Xbox Live servers; I have tried rebooting everything, I have tried forwarding the appropriate ports, my router IS in DHCP mode, and yet still no luck. Can anyone help? My SERVICE provider is Virgin MEDIA; I'm in the UK.

It is registration data done by bellsouth for my e-MAIL program,it worked before using the ccleaner,now it doesn't.I checked the registry using regedit.Registration data is usually stored in cookies, not in registry.

So for Xmas I got a new external harddrive which is pretty d**n big - 640GB and I mooved all my data on it.
Since there was nothing to do with my other harddrive (in my pc) I decided to partition them in order to have two operating systems - Both Vista and (to try it out) Ubuntu.

So I started messing around and stuff, untill I ended up like this:


As you can see on the PIC, I messed up my partition stuff, while my original idea was to leave 100GB for the C: (Vista, NTFS) and the remaining 60Gb for "D" (or maybe I'll make another letter) (Ubuntu, Linux Ext2/3).

Unfortunately when I tried to add some space from My previous "E" partition to the "C" it said that PROGRAMS are running from the "C", therefore this is impossible. Since my WIN is running from the "C", I figured only a boot disk can save me.

Problems are:
1. I don't know how to add the Unallocated space to the "C", in order to increase the C's free space a little.
2. I don't know how to make the Unformatted "D" into a Linux thingy (Linux Ext2/3), and then SET it as an install location for my new Ubuntu.
3. I haven't a clue how to make boot up CD's or dissketes.

So if you can guys help I will be verry happy, because I can't stand my computer messed up like this anymore!!! Since there's nothing on "Local Disk (D)" or what was E, delete both of those partitions.

Once it SHOWS up as free space, try adding additional space to C that way. If you GET an error stating that there are programs in use, doesn't Partition Magic reboot the machine and complete the operation outside of Windows?Personally i would start over....

i think i found a program called switchconverting from one bitrate to another in any compression scheme is GOING to result in piss-poor quality in comparison to ripping the music again from the original source, for those files you have the original source of. Even burning them to a AUDIO CD and re-ripping them to a lower bitrate MP3 is bound to give better results.i have too many it would take forever! accually i was using one program to do it and it still sounded great! but the program stopped workingwell, it's only Piss-poor to a audiophile.

Hi, I currently have Acronis 10 home, but have a QUESTION I need answering about another version of Acronis. I already think the version I have is fantastic for backing up my harddrive, but I have now heard of another version, and if it does what I have been told it does, it would be perfect, and just what I needed. This version is called “Acronis Pro.” Now, what I need to know about this version is, am I able to back up my harddrive and restore it to any computer regardless of motherboard and it’s CHIPSET. At the moment, this version I have, only allows me to restore the image back to either an identical motherboard or something very close to it. Any help on this would be appreciated. Hello forum: I frequently download IRS and other sites' fill-in forms into my documents and then fill in the forms and then print them. In the past when I went back into the form at a later date the previously entered info was still in the form. Always. Now, when I go back to the form it is always blank. Even if I ' save ' a copy of a filled in form with all the fields populated, it is always blank. I can see the info just blink off and the form goes blank when I go back into the form and look at it. Right now all of the pdf. forms in my Documents have no info in any fields even though I have filled them out in the past. I am using WIN XP SP2, IE 6, Adobe Reader 6.0 with the last Reader update 6.06. I have asked around looking for others having the same experience and everyone says that they never could save info in the filled in forms . But in the past I always could . Did something CHANGE or is there a setting that I can reset to correct this? This is the first time in 5 years with this computer (Dell Dimension 2400) that this has occurred. Thanks.Typically, you need the full version of Acrobat (or an alternative PDF editing program) in order to edit a PDF in some way. Reader's not enough.

If you were able to do it in the past, then it's because you also have a version of Acrobat AND Reader 6 on your computer at the same time. When Reader was updated, it took over as the default program for opening PDF files.

Open up Acrobat or whatever program you have for editing PDFs, open the IRS form, and try that way.

Alternatively, you could uninstall Adobe Reader 6 and try opening your PDF. Best case scenaro, if you do have Acrobat, then it will automatically open your PDF. Worst case scenario, the PDF won't open at all and you'll have to reinstall Adobe Reader (download from Adobe's site...latest version is 9.0), Adobe Acrobat (install from any discs you may have if you purchased it in the past), or whatever PDF editor you may have.How are you saving the files ? ?Thanks for responses to my post. Adobe 6.0 came with the computer. I just went with the updates. I tried to install 7.0 more than once but got an error message. Could not install. I gave up since 6.06 was working OK. Thanks for the help.First, a key point needs to be clarified here. Adobe Acrobat is not merely a PDF reader, it's a PDF creation, or PDF publishing, tool, and it's rather expensive software. I'm sure you're *not* interested in spending hundreds of $ to GET it.

You are correct in thinking you should be able to fill-in some tax forms when viewed in Adobe Reader and save the form with the data you have entered. But, this depends on the form. Some tax forms will let you fill-in blanks but will not let you save those changes.

So, let's take a specific form for discussion. Let's use the 2008 U.S. Form 1040. You can get it at http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/lists/0,,id=97817,00.html. If I open that form in Adobe Reader 8, I can fill in the blanks and can also save those changes. Can you do the same?Soybean is it possible he's opening the failed install of Adobe 7 and it's not saving properly ? ?

Thanks guys for your feedback. Was gone all day and just got back and read your posts. I don't think it is a failed 7.0 install because when Adobe Reader kicks in it shows as 6.06 on the startup. I presumed that 7.0 never did install correctly since I did not uninstall 6.06 first. Right now I am hesitant to uninstall 6.06 since it is supposed to be hard to find and download in the event that I may not be able to install 7.0.(Anxiety). When I tried to update to 7.0 before(3X) I kept getting an error message after it had downloaded that due to a file error the installation failed. I presume that was because I did not uninstall 6.06. Possible? I do understand that the document creator can prevent saving info on their forms, but I did not think the Feds did that. I have downloaded most IRS forms including the common 1040. It is now in my documents. I can fill it in and immediately print the populated form but if I close it OR try so save a copy , it immediately clears the form. So for now, I am filling in the forms and printing them immediately. It's a hassle since I may need to change some of the info on the form and must start from scratch. I tried Foxit 3.1 and it has improved greatly over their first program 1.1. But I did have trouble putting check marks in the little boxes on the IRS forms. Everything worked fine except putting in a check mark. And with Foxit I COULD save the populated form. Amazing. My inclination is to advise you to uninstall Adobe Reader 6.06, download and install CCleaner and then run its Windows scan and its Registry scan, and then download and install Reader 8.1.3. Forget about Adobe Reader 7.0. If you, indeed, need version 6 again, you could get it at http://www.oldapps.com/acrobat_reader.htm. I suggest you get Reader 8.1.3 at http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

Thanks for replies. Before, when I had a blank IRS fill-in form in my Documents I would go into Docs and fill out the form. And then ,when I wanted to exit , the program would ask me if I wanted to 'Save the changes'. I would answer 'yes' and then when I re-opened the doc. all the information was still there. No more. When re-opened ,the doc is blank Also, before this I could open a new folder in my docs for a specific person and save a completed form in there. No more. Everything saved is a blank document. At this point , I agree that I should uninstall 6.06 and install the newer version. Every time I open Adobe(when online)I am prompted to upgrade to 7.0. That is why I mentioned it before. I guess if I had 7.0 they would prompt me to upgrade to 8.0. I have not upgraded because I was content using 6.06. It worked for my basic purposes and I do not need 3D, bells and whistles , etc.

Bought new pc for xmas but my son is having an error come up when trying to run games. Seems to be quite a common one.
d3dx9_34.dll missing, TRY reinstalling application.
The tricky bit is that I am out of the country until the 15TH Jan and therefore trying to help via phone and msgr.
After research it has led me to Directx 9.c needing to be installed. My son did this but then GOT a conflict error with the the DirectX 10 that comes with Vista.
"setup has detected one or more directx component files are in use by an application please exit all programs before starting again"

After more searching I believe it is a case of installing the single d3dx9_34.dll file if this is so.
My question is where do I extract and install it to. Have read it needs to go into Sys32 folder whilst others have SAID Syswow64 .
Can someone please advice and please try to keep it simple as I need to explain i to my 12yr old.

Hi. Could someone tell me how to put 4 photos, 6 inches by 4 inches onto an A4 sheet.

TedYou can print sets of pictures ONE on page if you right click the picture file and go to Print.

If you want to set it up manually, right click the picture file and go to Edit.
Press CTRL + A, and then CTRL + C.
Now go to Microsoft Word (or a program of your choice) and press CTRL + V.
This will copy and paste the selected image.
Once pasted in Microsoft Word, you can resize the image.

If you cannot resize it or move it around the page, double click the picture in MS Word and MAKE sure it is set to 'Behind Text'.There is one more way... if you are using XP.
Right click on picture chose print.
Photo printing wizard will appear click NEXT, chose your printer and printing preference click next, now you can see thumbnails click 3.5 x 5 in Print, Now change the value to 4 in number of times to USE each photo.

If I am running say Microsoft Word I know its being run on RAM but is it stored there.If it is why is there program files on the Hard Drive.Basically my question is when software is downloaded and used on a PC what is the full route it takes before it appears on your monitor.Homework?

RAM is volatile memory, meaning once no more power is supplied to it, it is erased.
Your hard drive is the storage medium for the program.

So, you access the program on the hard drive, once run, it is loaded into the RAM.
The RAM is not for physical storage, so the computer can read the data in the RAM very quickly and modify and change it ect...Sorry I didn't explain it properly.You have ANSWERED my question except for one bit, does the CPU send the files from the Hard Drive over to RAM.Homework, isn't it.Yeah.Look in your text books.I think I get what you are saying here,

I think you are confused with how it put it into RAM, it does not 'move' it into ram but copies it.

so this way if there is a power failure your program doesn't disappear.Be sure to read up on Operating Systems, applications, firmware (yuk!), and drivers etc. that are located and being run in various hardware processors. Don't get discouraged, just remember it is really very logical. I have been designing computer hardware for 30 years and it is most always the subtle interaction (or conflict) between hardware and software (plus firmware) that is most challenging.

Read through the various Forum topics and you will learn a lot from those real experts. Quote
