Solve : Modem noise?

Answer»

I would LIKE to disable the INTERNAL speakers from making dialing noise when connecting to the Internet. I am RUNNING Xp Home.Well, this is strange... I know that on a LAPTOP I used once, if you turned down/off the volume, the noise was gone... Try it... I'm guessing this is Dial-up?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Keller  ...try this ....CLICK start /control panel ....and make sure its displaying in classic view /Phone and Modem options/ click Modems Tab  / click properties / Modem Tab / now set the Speaker Volume to Off .....then click OK ......... that should do it ..

Solve : wont boot when dvd drive is connected?

Answer»

Greetings to everyone.
Can anyone help with this please. Whenever i connect any drive to the secondary ide connector my system refuses to boot. Once the cable is off booting is fine. I have tried all jumper settings on the drive and still same result, "disk boot failure insert system disk". System refuses to recognise any disk. PRIMARY master: none. Primary slave: none. Can someone anyone help?
GIVE thanks for the assistance.Hi Rock, try connecting the drive to it's own channel, some motherboards are VERY quirky this way. Look at the spot on the motherboard where your harddrive is connected, right next to it should be another slot, connect your drive using another seperate cable there. This way it has it's own channel. Cheers and good luck.

P.S. I believe you are having problems with connecting it to the existing cable due to the jumper settings on the harddrive not the dvd drive itself. Cheers and let us know if this helped Cary,
Thanks for your REPLY. Sorry I did not POST enough details. The drive is being connected to its own cable and channel. Yes there are two connectors, Secondary and Primary. On the Primary there is room for two connections. I have two Hard Drives connected to the Primary, one set as master and the other as slave. I am now trying to use the Secondary channel to connect the drive and this is when I run into the diskboot failure PROBLEM.
Thanks again for any help.

Solve : compaq 700us screen problem?

Answer»

Hey guys!
Thx for everyone who reads my problem.. I am just looking for ideas and some of you are really experienced hopefully, you guys can help me out. Anyway I got this laptop and the AC connector at the back was becoming loose. I didn't want to wait for a new power jack so I decided to solder the power the the motherboard. So I did, now I am not good at all and while I was testing the SOLDERING I did touch some of the components of the motherboard AROUND the power plug area and it did some sparkling. After I put all the components together. Suprisingly the laptop turned on except the screen. The screen is totally black. Sometimes if I look really close I can see the desktop, but it is soo dark that I can only see the start menu if I look really really CLOSELY. There is a svga plug in the back of the laptop so I decided to plug my svga monitor into it. And it WORKS fine. I personally think its one of the components on the motherboard... because the screen was working fine 1 day ago. But I really care about anyones opinion. Please Just positive feedbacks. Everyone makes mistakes...
When you say that you saw sparks, did you ground the electricity from your body first? What sparked? Also, if the power pack was just loose, then it still WORKED, right?

[glb]Flame[/glb]No the power didn't work when the ac jack was loose, sparking came from when I was playing with the ac adapter power cord when it was plugged in, I accedently didn't mount the power cable right and it did touch some of the components around that area and made some sparking, when it touched it. Thx for the reply.Well, if it sparked when you were "playing" woth the cord, then that's different, but when you touched the components, and they sparked, that would be becuase you did not groudn the eletricity from your body, right? Also, check your video card... Mayeb that got "shot-out"...

Solve : PC won't boot anymore?

Answer»

This morning, I discovered a problem with my PC.  It basically won't boot.

I press the power button, and I hear the fan come on, and that's it.  My monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers all act as though the computer is off.

The strange this is, last night it worked absolutely fine, and in the 8 months that I've had it, there have been no problems, even when it came to installing a new OS.

Does anybody know what it could be?Do you have virus protection? Have you checked your monitor connection etc.?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Of course I have virus protection, and on top of the fact that most virii are targeted towards WINDOWS helps too.

I've checked all the connections, unplugging everything, checking the connections and plugging BACK in, and it still doens't work.  It's very odd, because the computer was off all night, so theoretically it should be in the same condition as when it was on, last night.I suggest you RESET the CMOS.

To do so follow these steps:

1. Flick the I/O switch located on the backside of the Power Supply Unit.
-- If there is no such switch located unplug the power cable
2. Open the system case
3. Search the mainboard for a CMOS battery.
-- If you can not find it or do not know where it is, refer to your mainboard manual
4. Remove the CMOS battery for approximately 10 to 15 seconds.
-- Be extremely careful when working inside your computer take into mind that an electro static discharge may damage components. To learn more about ESD see this article.
5. Place the CMOS battery back into the holder.

Additional:

If your CMOS battery can not be removed, or you do not wish to remove it search through your mainboard manual for information on how to short circuit the CMOS jumper. The CMOS jumper may not be present on all mainboards.Just tried that, took it out, left it out for about a minute, and then tried to boot again, but it didn't help.  Same thing happened.Suggestions:

1. Remove individual HARDWARE components to eliminate problem.
2. Have the Power Supply Unit tested

Solve : Motherboard or software problem??

Answer»

I recently built a computer with Asus A7N8X-X motherboard (onboard LAN )and Sempron 2500 processor, 512 Meg Ram. Windows XP
My problem is that I cannot get the network to work. I should connect to internet via ethernet LAN connection but it does not work. The green LED is lit on the card.
I have tried pinging but it says error yet XP says my network card is good.
I originally had a used Asus motherboard but the network didn't work so I thought it was the card.Is it possible to have 2 faulty cards or is there something wrong with my software.
How can I pin down the fault to hardware or software?
I am connected at the moment via a friends pc from the same network cable that my computer does not work on.
Any ideas?
Do you have the most recent drivers for your card and motherboard installed?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes.  The drivers came on a cd with the motherboard.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I tried a seperate network card and that didn't work either.  Also I tried a USB to ethernet adapter which also didn't work. Are there any conflicts...........device manager.........right click on my computer icon//properties....or type msinfo32 or hwinfo in the run box...Suggestions:

1. Disable Windows XP SP2 FIREWALL.
-- Assuming it is installed
2. 'Recover' Network settings
-- Follow the steps written below.

1. Start
2. Configuration
3. Control Panel
4. Network Connections
5. Select your Network connection.
6. Right click -> Recover.
-- Translation may be wrong. COULD be called Repair or something in that manner.I did as you said and clicked on repair, the fault it came up with was unable to renew IP address.
I also clicked run and msinfo32 butI did not know what to look for. There didn't appear to be any conflicts!
What next? have you checked your router/modem/ cable  are they disaplying green leds  check all the connections or even firewalls you may have overlooked [in haste].........what error messages do you get if any>> have you got the nic drivers.........reload them! Quote

I did as you said and clicked on repair, the fault it came up with was unable to renew IP address.
I also clicked run and msinfo32 butI did not know what to look for. There didn't appear to be any conflicts!
What next?

Have you tried to manually configure your IP configuration? If I assign an IP address it works. However the IP address is assigned by DHCP and the computer cannot do this for some reason.
After this I removed and then re installed the drivers.  When clicking on Network connections it says enabled and firewalled. I am confused because I uninstalled Norton Internet Security.
Also if I disconnect the ethernet cable the computer detects this and says network cable unplugged. You may need to disable the built-in firewall for Windows.
-- This only applies to Windows XP SP2.

To do so follow these steps:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Security Center
5. Click on 'Windows Firewall'
6. Click on 'Disabled - Not recommended'Could not find security centre, maybe I have the other XP.
I removed the ethernet drivers and re installed them now it says ethernet enabled, but still it does not work.VERY frustrating.
I think I will remove and re install windows XP.
Quote

2.  I removed the ethernet drivers and re installed them now it says ethernet enabled, but still it does not work.
3.  I think I will remove and re install windows XP.

1.  You don't know?  Right-click "My Computer", select "Properties".  What does it SAY under "System"?
2.  Is the ethernet on the motherboard or a seperate plug-in card?
3.  GO to Windows "Device Manager".  Under Network Adapter, select the ethernet card, the properties.  Go to Advanced Tab.  Under "Media Type", what is selected?  Auto Sense?  Reinstalling Windows will not solve this problem.1.  Windows XP Professional version 2002
2.  Ethernet onboard.
3.  Under TCP/IP properties  it says: obtain IP address automatically, obtain dns server address automatically, DHCP enabled.
I clicked on the Nvidia NFORCE MCP networking adapter configure and it says it is working properly.
On the network properties it says LAN, enabled and then   AUTOMATIC PRIVATE ADDRESS when this should be assigned by DHCP.
How can I change this The built of Windows XP is of no relevance here. We do need to know wheter you have Service pack 1 or Serivce pack 2 installed.Service Pack 1

Solve : startup 9 beeps possibly too cold?

Answer»

When I start my computer up it beeps 9 times and the fans seem to be goign full speed, but nothing will show up on the monitor.
If I just let it sit about 5 minutes like that then try again it will startup right away with no beeps and right after it starts up the fans slow down a little bit.
This all happens when the room is at a normal temperature.
When it is hot in my room, over 80 degrees, my computer always starts up right away.
I don't remember when it started doing this, or if I changed anything.
I got a new case and power supply because I needed more power, it did the same thing when I had my old case too.
I have an intel 875pbz mother board,  with a P4 3ghz 800 fsb, 2gb dual channel ddr memory, 2 sata hdds, geforce fx 5900 ultra 256mb.  http://www.sysopt.com/biosbmc.html"Indicates faulty BIOS chip(s). It is not likely that this error can be CORRECTED by re-seating the chips. Consult the motherboard supplier or an AMI product distributor for replacement part(s)."

So is this still TRUE even though it works sometimes?  run a diagnostics check if you can>>>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.htmlI DOWNLOADED that, so how do I run a diagnostics check?I think I just did one, it ran a big test and gave me this really long report.  I looked through it and the only problem it found was my D hard drive only had 4 gb of hard drive space free.  But I know thats not the problem because I've had it about half free and the same problem still happened.  do you hibernate this pc.........what happens if you do!there are TWO schools of thought........shutdown/hibernate.......strain on drives etc> if shutdown........>>hibernate power saving less strain on components.......have you built this pc?Yeah, I built it.  I run xp pro on it, and a lot of times when i sleep, to avoid having to wait 10 minutes when i start up or because i'm downloading big files I leave it on.  I have it set to turn off the monitor after 10 minutes, but not the hard drives since I'm downloading.have you overclocked this pc did you check the bios settings>>..http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/step9.html......does the mouse/keyboard  num lock lights stay on when booting...maybe a graphics card fault......I never did any overclocking.  It might have to do with the video card.  I think it came lose or something once.  I'll try that.  I also tried reseting my bios to default.  But the same thing happend.  The only thing I have differnet from default is the agp aperature set to 256 mb.Why would you do that? Quote

Why would you do that?

Because that is how much main memory is set aside for the video card to use.  Since I have a 256 mb video card I set that much up, it improves performance because then it doesn't need to reload things back into memory that it couldn't fit before.Makes sense. However, mine is set to 64MB (I have an 128MB ATI Radeon 9000Pro) and I experience no difficulties with precaching.

Have you thought of setting this option to 64MB and see if you still experience problems?info>>http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/NVIDIA/FX5900U/page13.htm

Yeah I tried that, nothing really changes, other than lower performance in games.  Since I have 2GB of memory I can easily AFFORD to have a 256 mb aperature.  What you should set it at depends on how much main memory your computer has and how much memory your video card has.  It will improve performance in games that use a lot of video memory if you have it the same or greater than how much memory your card has.  Otherwise there will be slight pauses once and a while in the game, where it has to get rid of what is in memory then load the new stuff.  However, only the newere games at very high settings will use up this much memory.  Such as Doom 3 when you set the textures really high, even my 256 mb card doesn't have enough memory for the highest texture settings, which require 512.

Solve : power connections?

Answer»

Does anyone know what might happen if the power connector to the DC-rom was touched to the CD-rom power inlet momentarily while the computer was on.
I may have done this; and now any attempt to connect any device as a slave to the primary IDE ribbon result in the computer not being able to boot into the main C-Drive.. I have anew CDRW drive that I cannot connect on the primary circuit and my secondary IDE circuit is full. Thanks for any ideas. FRED. Quote

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to SAY here, but electricity can do some crazy things.  I had a spark once while connecting the power cable to my power supply and it ruined both my CD rom and CDRW drive, my Hard drive, video card, modem, and network card.  But my processor, MEMORY, floppy, and motherboard still functioned.  But the AGP and PCI slots that had the CARDS connected were damaged.

I would try another IDE cable.  And are you sure that the slave on the primary IDE controller in the BIOS is enabled?  If you need additional assistance, please contact me at ResourcePC.

Dave
There is nothing in a PC that is "hot swappable".  This means that nothing is designed to make or break a connection while voltage is PRESENT at the power source.  Anything that happens as a result of this whether intentional or not is purely a "crap shoot".  If you're lucky...nothing bad happens; if you're not...your guess is as good as mine.  Do what hywaydave suggests and hope for the best.

[glb]Flame[/glb]You already have a video card, it is what your monitor plugs into.  Now, you may need a better video card than what you have though.  Like Flame stated, what are the specs of your PC (cpu speed, RAM, video card memory) and what does the game state as it's minimum REQUIREMENTS?  If you need additional help, you can REACH me at ResourcePC.

Solve : Risk Check Please...?

Answer»

Hey! This sound kind of weird coming from me, but... Messing around with internal devices never was my best... Anyway... I'm buying a LAN/Ethernet Card to install.... This is it... http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=270465&pfp=srch1 ... I was told by GATEWAY that this card is compatible with my system, and that there is no risk, but for those of you who know my history, Gateway has been VERY WRONG before... What I want to know is if there are any risks to installing this card... My system requirements are as follows... If you need more information PLEASE ask me!

OS: Windows XP Home
Processor: AMD Athlon 950 MHZ
RAM: 896 MB

And, Gateway seems to think that I have a PCI slot open... They have me this picture... http://support.gateway.com/s/CASES/3500689/350068905.shtml ... I know that the card foes into one of my expansion slots... So I must have an open PCI slot, right? Any risks involved? Thanks!

[glb]FLAME[/glb]what about this one>.http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2680525

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame:
Any PCI NIC card will work, if you have an open PCI slot.  You can't just look at the back of the tower.  They use the same case for many motherboards.  Open it up and look inside.  Do you know what a PCI slot looks like?  If not, they are the white connectors.  Also, do you know how to open the case?  Looking at the front, remove the left side panel. Thanks for the reply! I have actually been in the case a few times on maint. but it seems like it will be ok now... Thanks for the help!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Whoops! Almost forgot to get what I came for! lol  Which of the two cards are better? Anyone have any ideas?

[glb]Flame[/glb]They're virtually identical.  Flip a coin.ok... So now we'll have to bring it down to the manufacturers... Which do we all trust more?

[glb]Flame[/glb]They all really work the same, I've never seen any one outperform another if they are 10/100.  Just go for whatever is cheaper.  I got a couple at best buy a year or two ago for $15, with a $10 rebate, so it was only $5.  I also bought another one straight up there for $10.  They installed easily, windows xp automatically installed the drivers, performed well, never had any problems.
I would look for something cheaper than that, I'm sure you can get one for under $10.  Just buy whatever is cheapest.  Thanks for the reply! I have MADE a decision! It looks like I will be buying the Netgear card from Gateway! It is actually $1.00 more, but it's  Plug-and-Play, so that's better. Thanks for your help guys!

[glb]CASE CLOSED[/glb] lol (I always wanted to say that    )

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well, I found a better card! (Don't know why I'm talking about it, but oh well) http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=118210&pfp=srch1 ...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes these computers are on a network as this is free access to computers.  When someone comes in we scan for viruses if they have cd's or floppies.  A man came in and wanted to KNOW if he could hookup his labtop and my boss wants me to FIND out if this can be checked for viruses.  something to do with a usb device.  Confused well I was when she asked me to reasearch on it as I think this could be a problem.Do you WANT to scan the laptop or a USB device?

Solve : NTFS Seagate?

Answer»

I bought a new Seagate 160 GB drive off the net.
Installed it through DOS with 2 start-up floppies using discwizard.
It said on there windows xp cannot allow to 160 GB so it will do it to 137 GB.
I then loaded up into windows and saw it was only 127GB.
I downloaded and installed discwziard for windows.
I then GREW the partition to 160GB.
Kept GETTING warnings saying it is recommdned you do a scandisk before this.
I ignored all warnings and continued.
It also asked me if i have the correct drivers saying it strongly recomends i get them.
I didn't know what ONES to get so again i went straight ahead.
The partition now says 149GB is this still 160gb?

I am now running all the tests (Discwizard full diagnostic test and the ontrack easy recovery full one)
Has found no errors so far.
Am going to do a chkdsk.

Over time will i get problems?
Can data corruption/loss only be caused from bad sectors, would those bad sectors be logged though in programs like chkdsk?
Also can the bad sectors be detected even with nothing on the drive?

Thanks.Why can I only see 127 to 137 GBytes of my 160+ GB drive?Yeah you're right.

Also how would i know if my divx movie was corrupted if i didnt have bad setors? Would it error before playing, everytime?Did you read the warning in the link provided?

Warning - Formatting an ATA interface drive past the 137GB barrier on a system that does not meet all requirements will result in data loss.
OK, ive already done it now.
In scans with ontrack's software and their software it has logged no bad sectors at all.
Can i undo what i did or get the operating solutions for windows xp?
How do i find out if i got an ultra ata/133 pci card?
I have an intel p4 chipset, does that mean its ok??

Help man im really worried!!
Just filled it up to 78GB

I was running SP2 at the time.
At the end of the drive's partition extension i ran:
CHKDSK - No Errors.
Ontrack's Full Diagnostic Test - No Errors.
Seagate's Disc Wizard Drive Self Test - No Errors.

Will i still have data loss?
Is there a way to undo what i have done? If so, how?

If i did have data loss, it would be bad sectors wouldnt it cos data loss can only be from bad sectors cant it?
Would those bad sectors be picked up on chkdsk and others software?

Also in chkdsk's stage 4 of 5 from 16% it skipped all the way to 86%

Solve : RAM Help!!?

is rdram [184 PIN (16bit)] compatible with regular 184 PIN ram???

if this is a stupid question im sorry, im a newbieeasy way out>>http://www.crucial.com/uk/promo/index.asp?prog=desktop2oops, THATS a bad question,

i have rdram (184 PIN 16bit) on my computer, i have an extra 512 of regular 184 PIN ram.

the slots dont match up, but iwas wondering if somehow i could make them fitIf you have a Dell, Compaq, Toshiba, Gateway, HP, or other OEM computer!
Know in advance; that these OEM computers require very specific memory part NUMBERS or the upgrade will fail. Only buy and install part numbers listed by the memory MAKER as being for your specific model number. You don't need to buy your upgrade from the computer maker since they charge very high prices. Buy make very sure that the memory part number you buy is listed for your exact model number.

DDR 184 Pin - Used in newer desktop computers. 5.375” x 1”

184-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Each 184-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path, so they are installed singly in 64-bit systems. 184-pin DIMMs are available in PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and PC3200 DDR SDRAM. To use DDR memory, your system motherboard must have 184-pin DIMM slots and a DDR-enabled chipset. A DDR SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket. (Information on which memory technology is used by your system is included in the Memory Selector.)
The number of black components on a 184-pin DIMM may vary, but they always have 92 pins on the front and 92 pins on the back for a total of 184. 184-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.375" long and 1.25" high, though the heights may vary. While 184-pin DIMMs and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the ROW of pins.
Dual Channel mode memory. For systems that make use of dual channel memory mode, you must have two memory boards that are exactly the same or the dual channel portion will not work. Get two memory chips with the same part number if you want dual channel.

Please note that RDRAM is also KNOWN as 'Rambus' and MUST BE INSTALLED IN PAIRS, they also sell what is known as C-DIMMS or "Continuity" (basically fake rambus chips that must be installed in the 'empty' dimm slots in order for the memory to register in case you buy only 2 chips and have 4 slots)

Also be sure to check to see if you use NON-ECC or ECC, a simple way to check for this is to look at the dimm itself, or use SiSoft Sandra Lite or Belarc Advisor (just google those two names and they will provide a complete breakdown of your entire system for free uopon installation). Hope this helps.

Solve : Little question...??

Hello friend how are all of you? I have some little questions that what is spam and what is spyware? and what types of problem do they create? Although I know something BASIC about them but I need solid and CONCREET description.
Do take CARE of you and others.
DeWSpam is usually E-mail from people that you do not know, which are either ads, or even viruses... They're just annoying... Spyware is software that installs itself onto your hard disk, and "eats-up" your virtual memory, etc. Until it is deleted... Spyware not only takes up memory, but can be a hazard for those ordering items online, becuase it could be a KEYLOGGER... Which means that someone is watching you trype in your credit card number, etc.... Very dangerous...

Solve : Modem & color messed up?

Answer»

I "clean install " win 98 but now it created two (2) problems
(1) When I try to go on the internet I get the FOLLOWING error message " Error 630 , not receving a respond from the modem, check if plugged in ,and if necessary turn off modem and turn on back.
How do you turn off the modem
(2) Now I don't have a 256 color setting only have 16 colors and 2 color.
How do you correct this. You can turn off the modem simply by unplugging the power cord... Also, make sure that the modem's drivers are installed. Also, update your video card drivers to help with the color...

Solve : hard drive fail?

Answer»

my master hd failed on me today anyways qs is my slave has files on it and i need a hd now can i put a os on there and leave a partion with the files  like you can do with xp pro or all them going to be lostblue_caddy... If I undrerstand you .......your hard drive ( the master has failed ) but your other HD the Slave is ok ........    So If you replace the faulty drive with a new one and INSTALL your O/S on it your existing slave drive will still be intact and fully servicable.

dl65  no i want to put os on slave and keep the files that are on itblue_caddy.....ooooh , do you have empty partition on it
that will house the O/S .

dl65  no the hd just had files on it what i was asking can i just creat the partion and put the os on there without losing them files thats what i was asking cause with xp pro it shows as used space then empty yes no? if need i can get the files cause i have that drive backed up to tapeblue_caddy.... Well if you have everything backed up on tape..... I would wipe the drve and reinstall the O/S and then restore all the rest from your backup.

dl65  blue candy, Is your entire drive on the slave used up as one big partition?   If your only partition on the slave drive is USING up the entire disk, then you're going to have to use something like Partition Magic, which allows you to create, resize and merge partitions on your hard drive without destroying data.  Then you should be able to create a SECOND partition on your slave drive and install the OS there.  That is just one option, there are other partitioning tools out there as well.

That's why is always important to backup your data.  If you need additional help, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

You can not create additional partitions once files are installed.

Not without having the content unaccesable by normal means.

However, you can simply install an operating SYSTEM on one of the partitions you have created on your slave Hard Disk Drive.

-- Do not FORGET to set your Hard Disk Drive to Master before attempting to boot from it.

Solve : Possible Video Problem?

Answer»

Ok, i believe that this PROBLEM could be due to the fact that i installed the basic drivers but i am not sure. What happeneds is that when i run a game or sometimes a video test the monitor will just shut off and the speakers will make a weird continous sound as if the computer froze, i just got this computer about a month ago and i am just wonder what the problem could be. I am thinking that i should just reformat. Also i tried a new monitor and it still did the same thing. I ran several tests on the video CARD and it SAYS its fine.

Just need some direction hereMake use of your warranty.Have you scanned for viruses? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I having same problem after i change my Geforce mx200 VGA Card to Ati Radeon 9550, i have retrade my new VGA card from the shop once and update new driver. but the problem wont solve... my pc will restart automatic or sometimes just hang when i play game...Be certain that you have uninstalled all drivers and FILES related to the Nvidia videocard.

  • Use a registry scanner
  • Use a program such as Driver Cleaner.
I had a problem like that once, it ended up it had nothing to do with the video.
Try updating your sound card drivers, that fixed it for me. Quote

Could you rephrase your explanation?

When you are speaking of a primary and secundairy installation, are you referring to the primary and secundairy monitors FOUND in the advanced tab of your desktop settings?

-- I believe that is perfectly normal for most ATI Radeon cards. They often support two monitors.

Or are you referring to having two drivers installed at the same time? Quote

Solve : help--- NO sound?

I have absolutely no sound on my computer.  SPEAKERS, etc are hooked up & fine.

I went to Control Panel to 'sounds, speech, audio devices' and it's tellin me 'NO AUDIO DEVICE' for anything I click on.

HELP!

Daveyes, its always WORKED---all of a sudden, maybe 2-3 days ago, it hasn't and i can't figure out how to get it TO work.

in control panel when i go to anything re: volume or volume settings, it says 'no audio device'  and i TRY another thing to just adjust the volume, but something pops up and says 'there are no active mixer devices available.  to install mixer devices, go to control panel, then PRINTERS and other hardware, then click add hardware'

i noticed this the other day when i wanted to play something and it was playing, but no sound.  i looked at my taskbar and the speaker for volume icon wasn't there.

to be honest, i know hardly anything when it comes to this---so i need help.  Go to your sound card manufacturer's website, and download the latest drivers for it, and install them. This will usually fixes the problem...

Solve : Computer doesn't?

Answer»

I'm having a bit of trouble with my Compaq Presario X1000 laptop. Last night I was getting really slow speeds consistantly on my internet (33kb even THOUGH I have cable). Then today when I tried to turn on my computer, it would not even load. The power turns on, I hear a bit of sound coming from the HD but it stops. The Cd/DVD spins and the cpu fan goes as well, but there is just nothing on the screen. I'm pretty sure there is no problem with the screen because there is a flash when I force shutdown. Also I have tried numerous times to turn on my comp and ONE time it loaded normally. I immediately scan for adware and don't FIND any. Then I do a virus scan and the screen begins flickering. I can't do anything to stop and and I forced shutdown again. I have tried numerous times after that to turn on my computer again to no avail. Still that black screen although the power button is on and everything. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.troubleshooting a laptop can be difficult.  I think this could be more of a hardware failure somewhere more than anything. One of the reasons I'm saying this is because you don't even see the POST screen or the COMPAQ splash screen they usually display on their computers when you first boot them up.  I don't think your CPU has become loose, I used to build laptops for Gateway, and I remember that we screwed these in.  Which I'm sure everyone does because of the abuse they GET.  You may NEED to bring this in to a shop, unless you have a spare laptop where you can change out parts to troubleshoot the problem.  You may want to try and run diagnostic tests if you can boot to a floppy disk (although it doesn't sound like you are going to be able to).   If you need additional help, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

DaveIs this via the battery or mains adapter.........run scandisk.......to check hard drive......sectors for bad blocks...This happens via both adapter and batteries. I cannot run anything like scan disk or adware check because I can even get to the bios load screen.

Solve : Motherboard failure??

Answer»

My computer won't boot probably 7 out of 10 times. Not even it will boot into the BIOS screen. In that situation, the reset button is not working and I have to turn off the power and on again. If it manage to boot, it will show "No keyboard present..." or, it will jump into BIOS setup after the memory test, and the keyboard is not working in both situations. Tested with new keyboard but same. Only 1 or 2 times out of 10 that it will boot normally. Could this be a motherboard failure?  Nobody has any idea? Quote

... Could this be a motherboard failure?

Seems likely.
My friend suggested that a power supply failure may also lead to this situation, would it be?No.  Power supply either works or it doesn't work.Is there any diagnostic tool can be used to check the functionality of the motherboard? I've TRIED to contact the ASUS's technical support but no reply. You can't check it if it doesn't boot.  If it does boot, all will check out normal.  Could be a bad component, a cold solder joint or a hairline fracture on the motherboard.  Could be broken keyboard connector.  I just got one like that myself, sometimes POSTs, sometime doesn't.  It's even an Intel motherboard, so you never know. You experience the same before? I strongly believe that it's the problem with the PS/2 port, because sometimes my mouse is not functioning well too. Is there nothing can be done to fix it? How I wish I'm still working with the motherboard manufacturer so that I can replace the connector.Same problem, sitting on the workbench right now, no case just parts laying on the table.  Probably why it was thrown in the trash.  PS2 connectors are in the corner of the motherboard and not well supported.  Probably damaged when inserting or REMOVING keyboard/mouse.I can get a new connector but I'll need a high-temperature (~300 C) soldering sink to melt the solder on the ground point of the connector pins, and I don't have that sink in my house. I don't think any shop will change the connector for you, and it is so unworthy to get a new motherboard just because of a damage cheap PS/2 connector.Probably not the connector, but the point where the connector attaches to the motherboard. You mean the fracture is on the board not the connector? Well, I don't think so, because in my time working in the manufacturing I never met any defect due to the hairline fracture on the board itself.I've seen solder joints break many times.  Heat them up and reflow them.  I used to design and build circuit cards for computers.  I've seen all kinds of failures.  You can't see the defects without a microscope.  A small fracture can cause a change in CAPACITANCE, without losing complete contact.I see...gotta try that one day...and did that SOLVE your similar ENCOUNTER?Haven't tried it on the one I have now.  It's still laying on the bench with no case, boots most every time.  Sometimes just removing the motherboard from the case and reinstalling "fixes" it.  Overtightening a mounting screw can mess things up.

With the specs you mentioned .......more ram will definately make it work better.

dl65

You should reset CMOS/BIOS start up to deafults.
Unplug computer. Open case. On mothboard there is a large flat silver battery. Take it out. Wait for about 30 seconds. Put it back. This will reset start up settings to factory default.
Put case together. Plug in. Turn on.
Should start ok.
If not, let me know - with more info about your system.

Solve : Rear Speakers Not Working?

Answer»

Hi All,

I'm trying to get my rear speakers working with my SB Live! 5.1 CARD.  They're plugged in the correct plug, and the speakers work fine, but I'm not getting any sound out of them.

I have the latest drivers from Creative.  When I do a sound test with it set to 4 speakers I don't get any sound from the rear speakers, but if I tell it I have 5.1 speakers one of the rear speakers declares itself as "Center Channel", but still no sound on the rear channel test.

In "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Control Pannel I have it set to "Quadrophonic Sound", I can't think of what else I could do!!

PLEASE HELP ME.

reply here or email me at [email protected]Questions:

1. Are your drivers properly configured?
-- You may have overlooked a certain configuration menu that could have been added after installing the soundcard drivers.
2. Are you using the original drivers?

Suggestions:

1. Download the latest drivers for your soundcard
2. Obtain the manual of your Soundcard and Speaker set and refer to the trouble shooting section.be sure that your music or audio is not defaulting to a program OTHER than the one specified by Creative for the tests, be sure the music you hear actually SUPPORTS 5.1 and that the sub-woofer is in the ".1" jack. Cheers A good song to try out the stereo is Hotel California beleive it or now (By the Eagles)The WIRING for them matters, CONSIDERING what you said before. As you probably know 5.1 means 5 speakers 1 sub, 6.1 = 6 speakers 1 sub...etc etc etc. When you said one of the speakers declares itself the center speaker that seems to me like you are listening to music that isnt in 5.1 surround, and your speakers arent wired correctly. The center speaker always plays, as do the left and right front, while in certain cases the rear wont; a better test to see if they are working is to play a dvd, as they run in 5.1. Check your wiring. If one of the rears thinks its the center channel it is in the wrong plug.  There should be 3 spots you can plug speakers in, fronts, rears, center and sub, switch the rear's plug with the other open spot.  And if you want 5.1 you can just add another set to the front/sub port.
I had a 4.1 system, and instead of buying a 5.1 I just bought a 2.1 and hook it in the center.

I rebboted several time my computer but result is =0.
I look all connection cables as PER diagram. This my computer is unbranded  window 98 ,and i dont have any restore CD Or any disk etc.
Pls help me to get out from this problem.GOD BLESS YOU.
Thank you for your time. heartbroken_1968a......Which jumper settings did you SELECT on the cd-roms ?
Which IDE cable did you connect the new cd- rom to ?

Let us know

dl65  Yup as stated above, please check the jumpers, please check that you in fact have POWER going to both, and that you did not loosen the connection at the motherboard. CheersI used same IDE cable which was CONNECTED to existing cd-rom drive. That cable had extra connenector.Yes i removed the connections IDE cable (connector) from mother board and put it back once i hookedup CDR-ROM drive. I put jumper for slave/ master in existing old cd-rom drive in center.
Rahul........Your description of how you set the jumper isnt really clear ....so here's what you should have done ........
The existing cd drive should have its jumper set as the master and it should be plugged into the plug at the end of the IDE cable .........The new cd drive should have its jumper set as the slave and the cd should be connected to the plug in the MIDDLE of the IDE cable. You must also be sure the 4 pin power plug is plugged into each cd drive .......

Solve : 1 long beep at start-up?

Answer»

I just built my pc with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum MB , AMD 64 3000, Kingston DDR400 1GB and Coolmax CX-450B 450W power supply.  When I use the power button in front I get 1 long beep and nothing happens but if I hit the front button to TURN on and then use the power button in back, off then back on again I get 1 short beep and everything is fine. Thanks for your help!Recheck all installed  hardware/or reset it ram sticks etc..............check mobo manual........Some 64 Msi boards dont like Audigy 1 sound cards-do you have one?Mine did the same until I binned the CARDI'm using the built-in sound on MB,no sound card. One other thing that bothers me is that I sent 3 e-mails to MSI tech support with no reply also the manual is light on trouble shooting.  Thanks for the responses.

  • Recheck all cables and connectors
  • Reseat all hardware.

-- Technical support never responds during weekends. If you have written to them during a work day and not received a reply in at LEAST 5 DAYS, I suggest you E-mail again but this time pay specific attention to any demands they may place on your E-mail.

For example: certain technical support wants you to PUT a specific text in the subject line or otherwise their filters will consider your message spam.Dan
Have you tried the very helpful MSI forums here

Solve : Monitor adjusts H and V size/position by itself?

Answer»

Usually it will go back and forth slowly and stop after awhile, but most of the time the size and position will be messed up making me manually change it back to normal. It might stop for awhile after this but it usually starts up again pretty soon. Any ideas?I assume you have a CRT RIGHT? This usually happens when a program changes the default aspect ratios during a quick resolution change upon program execution. MANY videogames alter the SCREEN dynamics to compensate for certain code (as in OpenGL SCRIPT) to optimize your experience. This can usually be fixed by patching the program that is actually causing the screen dynamics to change. APART from that, perhaps your monitor is old? Cheers.

Solve : CD-ROM drive not detected- help!?

Answer»

I am trying to play Sims2, but my computer suddenly forgot I have a CD-ROM drive!  It doesn't appear in My Computer or in the Device Manager.  This has happened a few times, and when I restarted it would say something about the drive being reconfigured and everything was fine.  I have restarted a MILLION times and still nothing.

HELP!!

  • Scan for Viruses
  • Scan for Spyware
  • Scan for Trojan Horses
It could also mean that your CDrom is going bad, or you have a problem with your IDE cable or controller.  Scan for viruses, spyware, and trojans first to see if anything was detected.  If not, we may need to DIG further.

Solve : ATI Radeon 9200se?

Answer»

Hi
i am trying to install an ati radeon 9200se 128 ddr card. I have uninstalled the geforce driver before swapping cards but the pc keeps rebooting itself with the ati card installed.Briefly a blue screen with a message appears but not long enough to read it. I am running under win xp pro sp2. Booting in safe mode LOADS the os but as soon as i try to access the driver, display properties or device manager it shuts down.1. Be certain the card is properly seated
2. Uninstall any drivers (From the ADD / Remove software MENU) you may have had installed for either the ATI or Nvidia videocard
3. Use a registry scanner to remove any registry entries that are related to the ATI or Nvidia videocard.
4. Remove any entries that are related to either the Nvidia or ATI videocard in your device manager. (Right CLICK My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager)

Additional: There is a tool somewhere on the Internet that can remove drivers automatically for you (And their remains) but I can not think of the name at the moment. Perhaps someone else can.The tool you are referring to is Detonator rip.Have done all the above, finally GOT to read the error message,it tells me "irql less not equal".is it saying somthing about your 16 bit sub? cause thats what it sounds like and youll have to find the missing file and put it back into system 32 find the file the file thats problly messed up you can find in your repaire folder but you need the right name post the file name its looking for Quote

Solve : strange monitor problem?

Answer»

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 997DF monitor and it has started doing something strange recently. it's kind of hard to describe, but every so often the PICTURE get's kind of WAVY on the screen as if something is interfering with the monitor. i'm not really sure what could be causing the problem. any ideas?I have had the same problem which was caused by a very small oscillating desk FAN six feet away from the monitor, look around for anything that may cause magnetic interference.Mobile phones will send a ripple through my monitor just before i'm rung, i also get a small pop through the speakers but its more likely to be a magnet. Your monitor should have a de-magnetise THING that will fix the problemyeah, that's what it seemed like to me to, but i'm not sure what could be causing it... i have a cell phone set about 2.5 ft away and a sub about 3.5 ft away. i don't think it's either of these, but if it's not, then what? all else that's near is a self-setting alarm clock, desktop speakers, and surge protector. i'm gonna turn off my sub/speakers for a while, move my cell phone, and see if it still happens... other than that, not sure what to do...well, the sub is off and the cell phone is nowhere near the monitor... but it still does it so neither of them can be interfering... what else could it be?i found the demagnetize OPTION through the monitor menu. I tried it a couple of times, but that didn't solve the problem either...I'm assuming you've checked everything within 20 feet of the monitor, how about the video cable connections?
Another thing could be the power supply, how long does the wavy stuff last for?the wavy distortion only lasts for a secondIs it possible to try a different monitor as a test?actually, at the moment, yes it is possible, i just happen to have a spare dell, i'll test it soon and post back up
ok, got another monitor hooked up and... it's still does it... what else could it be?Well done, at least we can take the monitor out of the problem.
Now to your mains power supply, the quickest easiest way I can think of checking it is to pack the whole computer up & plug it in at someone else's house, not next door to you.
Alternatively, borrow someone's complete computer & try it at your house.
I know this sounds like a headache but it's a process of elimination.wow, that sounds like a huge pain... um, i just recently moved (college student moving from dorm to dorm) and was wondering if it could be something related to the new room (distortion caused by wires in the wall or even something in the room next door)? the weird thing is that my new dorm has about the same dimensions and furniture so my new room is set up and layed out EXACTLY how it was in the old dorm, but this is a new problem i'm having....It could be something in the next room, can you try moving the monitor and see if things change?i bet your neighbors have a new toy that is causing the headache. May also be your room layout, are you on a differnet side then where you used to be on the building? Look out the window, any powerlines close by or repeater boxes?
