Solve : Second hard drive not recognised?

Answer»

A few days ago i disconnected my SECOND hard drive because i was experiencing "freeze up" when i would try to open a file on the second drive.  This morning I opened up the machine and checked the jumpers.  They were set for master and slave.   I reset them both to CS enable after deciding that the cable was an ATA cable that could be used for that.      Then when I restarted tje machine it would not boot.   I went to BIOS and set the bboot sequence for drive 0 first then floppy, CD rom in that order.   After several tries, the machine finally booted.  But it will not recognise the second drive.  It is not on "my computer" or on the device manager.  I am running Windows XP Home ed.  Does ANYONE have any ideas???a   ThanksIs 2nd drive (Drive 1) shown in BIOS?Renew........ide cables...........run diagnostics on drives
run chdsk on both drives!!or if
maxtor.....seagate.........visit main  websites for diagnostic software........Computer_Commando,  Thanks for the come back.  No the second drive does not show on BIOS

Merlin_2,  The ide cable is new, and, as the  master is Seagate, and the slave is Maxtor, I will do as you suggest.  Thank YouHave you tried placing the 2nd drive on the 2nd IDE controller and see if it's recognized there   Quote

...No the second drive does not show on BIOS...The ide cable is new, and, as the  master is Seagate, and the slave is Maxtor...

If not showing in BIOS, Windows won't see it, diagnostics won't work.  Check cable, check jumper settings, check power to drive.  Then check it all again.
Tried finding diagnostic software on SEagate and Mxtor with no LUCK.   I guess i don't know what ito look for.  Cables check out ok.    And no, I have not yet tried second IdE connector.  Both CD drives are on that and i am HESITANT to mess with them.  1. Have you set your jumpers back to Master and Slave?
2. Have you properly inserted the IDE cables?

-- Not all IDE cables feature a missing pin.
-- The red stripe should be aligned with Pin 1 of the IDE connector.Which hard drive loaded ok!Thank you all for your help and suggestions.   I went in again, not expecting to find anything ,   but,  I found a loose pin on the power connector to the second drive.  Hallelujia,  that was it.  Every thing is working ok now.  The drives are on CS select.    I do have a question though;   everytime i boot up, windows wants to run a chkdsk on both partitions of the second drive.   ANYBODY know what that is all about??   Thanks again, love this forum,,      jcAre you properly shutting down Windows?

Answer»

i have a Gateway 310 desktop that acts like it wants to start up but the CPU turns on and then the moniter just sits there in the screen that says "MONITER SELF TEST"  i took the side cover off and nothing appears to be friend just a red flashing LED that flashes WHENEVER the computer is on

You are going to have to be more elaborate.

2. Replace videocard
3. Properly connect monitor
4. Replace monitor
How long has this being doing it?have you had this in storage!Ive been USING SINCE i got it about 2 years ago, was a early graduation present

Solve : Monitor works every second time?

Answer»

This is me doing a friend of mine a favor; he has a problem with his computer which he's had since he GOT it. I don't know the exact specs, but what happens is that when he press the power on button the monitor doesn't get a signal. He turns it off and on again, and voila the monitor gets a signal and works fine. If he turns it off and on again, he gets the exact same problem.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

CheersCan you HOOK this monitor up to your computer or another spare computer and see if it has the same results?  If you NEED additional help, you can REACH me at ResourcePC.

DaveI READ your reply to the other monitor-thread and I've asked my friend to try a different monitor. I'll get back to you with the results

Thanks for your reply

Solve : Re: I want to know about processors..?

Answer»

Your picture doesn't load.

It LOOKS as if you're trying to insert a picture that's stored on your local machine.  You're going to have to upload it to a WEB server or free host SOMEWHERE first.  A free place to upload files so that you can POST them in here is Photo Bucket.  If you need ADDITIONAL help, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

Is there anyone who knows the name of the cable: 15 pin cable where one end is 15 pin and the ORDER end is like a connection to LCD monitor pcb board?male to female 15 pin cableThank you for your input.
I am sorry I could not describe the cable in detail.
One side is 15 pin male but the other side is a female plastic circuit holder (2 MM x 16MM), which is divided into 16 holes to be connected to monitor circuit board back side of monitor.  10 lines in the circuits which are red, green, black ....strating from 15 pin male side are PEELED off and connected to one side of this female plastic holder.  And the other side of this plastic holder ais left empty to be connected to the pins from monitor pcb board.  Is there anyway we can show PICTURE in this site?

Do you mean DVI-I as opposed to VGA?

I believe that is a proper image. (Ignore the systemcase)

Solve : can my d drive write to dvd disc's?

Answer»

hi,
please help, very frustrated,
i have a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N [CD-ROM drive] according to my system info.  am using windows XP.  HOWEVER on the front of the DISC tray DVD ROM is indicated.  so this has me complitly confused.  i have searched for manufacturer info to determine features but i had no luck. i can definately write to cd-r's and watch dvds.  but what i really want to do right now is write a data disc to a DVD-R, as i have a couple of really large projects to backup.

whoaps... have done a bit more searching since i started writing... i think i found the answer on cnet.

dvd-rom drives cannot burn dvd's! is that correct? am very disapointed. i only bought this computer 6months ago! grrr
rgds
Atilla the HunThat is correct. You would need a DVD RW drive to record. DVD ROM drives can only view... Sorry!

[glb]Flame[/glb]You can get a dual format, DOUBLE layer DVD burner for under $100 nowdays.  The double layer DISCS themselves are still a bit pricy, but these drives can also burn single layer DVDs, as WELL as CDs.  If you need additional help, or help choosing a good drive, you can reach me at ResourcePC

Solve : bios settings?

Answer»

I have a ecs pm800-m2 mb with a 2.4 celeron processor. There is a setting in the bios (phoenix award bios) under frequency/voltage control called CPU Clock. I have the choice of anywhere from 133-166. Those numbers do not make sense to me and I don't KNOW what i should choose. My mb supports 533 or 800  fsb speed  and the processor has 533 fsb. If anyone could shed some light on this I would be grateful. Those settings are for overclocking the CPU.  Is this something you really want to do?  If yes, then do some research on the subject.

The default setting is 100 (100 x 4 = 400 bus speed).   400 x 5.5 cpu multiplier = 2200 MHz
CPU multiplier is fixed and cannot be changed.

100-133 FSB supports PC2100 memory.  If you try to overclock, you need faster memory.  If you have PC2700 memory, you can PUSH FSB to 166 and memory will still work.

I have 512 of PC 3200. does that mean that I can change it to a rate higher than 133?Start reading:  http://www.hwupgrade.com/overclock/cpu/index.html

Solve : CPU Settings changed or overclockingfailed??

Answer»

After figuring out the beeping noise, my computer turns on but has the following message:

WARNING: CPU settings has been changed or overclocked fail.
Please re-enter CPU settings in  the CMOS a setup and remeber to save before quit.

The Desktop PC is built up out of different parts, and my IT intellegence is below zero. How do I know what to enter?
I have an option of F1 to cont or DEL to enter setup.
Please help
Typically COMPUTERS COME with a group of settings called "OPTIMAL" and "fail-safe"...  If you can get into BIOS (Setup, whatever you call it), you should be able to choose one of these settings, and your computer's settings should be reset to a more-or-less factory setting.

Hope this solves your problem!  Oh, and tell me if it works; I wanna confirm the INTEGRITY of my info....

Solve : Why is it...??

Why is it that 1gb of RAM COSTS about 3 times as MUCH as

Because the 512 sticks are more POPULAR so the production line is GEARED toward them.   Just basic supply and demand. Thanks

Solve : Echo with speakers?

I've been a having a problem with my speakers since I got this computer. Its a Sony Vaio VGC-RB30 . Any time I play a Audio file the sound echos coming out of the speakers. I checked everything I can think about.I need some assistance.Which operating system are you using? Have you tried updating your sound card drivers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I just checked my device manager and went into the sound card tab and i have about  7 different devices under there. They have these:Audio Codecs,Video codecs,Legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices,Media control devices,REALTEK highdefinition audio, and unimodem half-duplex audio device. I dont know if thats bad or not but please let me know.I'm running Windows Xp SP2.I actually have no idea if that's bad or not...    However, lets just try updating the drivers and everything as I explained earlier first...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Ok Finished. All are up to date.I'm guessing that the problem was not solved then? Lets try this... Click on start -> Run ... In the run box, type    dxdiag    ... Press enter.... You might see a small gray box... Just click yes on that... You should now see a large gray box... Click on the sound tab, and click on the test sound button... It will now test your sound... Tell us if you still HEAR the echo, and if Dxdiag finds any errors afterwards...

Solve : Monitor gone blank?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with a 2 year OLD Sceptre flat panel monitor with pivot. When the monitor is turned on, everything is PICTURE perfect -- for about 2 seconds. The screen then goes blank; although in the right light I can see a very faint image of the desktop. This faint image, along with turning the monitor off and on again for my 2 second view, has enabled me to copy the files I've needed onto a disk for transfer to a laptop. So the system itself if working fine, something is up with the monitor. Any suggestions?Have you tried another monitor to be sure? Also, try updating your video card drivers...

[glb]Flame[/glb] .............check cables.......have you changed (or installed a program that messed with) the default resolution? Or the REFRESH rate? LCD MONITORS dont play NICE when you ask them to run at a resolution that is not the native default as it has to actually emulate it.Actually have you changed/installed ANYTHING at all?

Solve : SATA 150/II?

Solve : Monitor Screw Stuck?

Answer»

Hi.

I cannot disconnect my monitor from my computer, as one of the screws appears to be busted. Only the top plastic part seems to move, as it will twist but the screw will not loosen.

This monitor is broken and will not EVEN turn on, so I am understandably desperate to disconnect it. Has anyone experienced this issue before, or have any ideas how I can get the damned thing unplugged?

Thanks for any help.Ok, so the monitor cable screws will not come out of the desktop, right? What have you tried to get it out? Plyers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, the cable screw is stuck. I've tried both my fingers and plyers, but have made no progress. The other screw works perfectly.WD 40 oil? (Not much! )

[glb]Flame[/glb]I'm not sure it would work ... the plastic grip turns freely, so even if the actual screw were lubricated, I wouldn't have the means to UNSCREW it.Oh. I see... So the screw has come LOOSE from the grip... Not good.... Any way that you can get that grip off?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Okay, I managed to get it off, but can't do anything with the exposed screw ... probably a strength issue, or poor plyers.

Twist away from the cord to loosen, towards the cord to tighten, right?Yes... That's right... Now try the plyers and the oil...

[glb]Flame[/glb]AHHH ... excellent, it worked! A LITTLE bloodied, but the thing's out so it's all good.

Thanks for the help, the oil worked wonders.Great to see that I could have helped!    You come on back now if you have any more trouble!

Solve : IBM Laptop no boot?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a unique issue here. I have an IBM Thinkpad R31 with XP Home, 256 Megs RAM...etc. All of the sudden it will not start up for me. I've checked the battery for voltage and there appears to be plenty. I have been trying to start up using my power adaptor and it wont. Sometimes when I "Play around" with the docking station port on the bottom I can get the green light to activate, but it still doesn't boot. There have been no electrical storms. The adaptor is supplying a good supply of power.
I'm not an expert, so if anyone could possibly point me in the right DIRECTION, I WOULD be very greatful.

Garry  Maybe power problems with the power supply, which uses that battery... Maybe you need a new battery? Is the notebook under WARRANTY?

Solve : first freezing, now no video?

Answer» OK, first the comp was freezing (not shutting off, just freezing up) and now no video. it made a WEIRD noise, like alot of static coming thru the speakers, the last time it froze. I checked the video card, its good. I checked the monitor, its good. all the fans are running on the mobo and the power supply. the ram was working fine. there are no software conflicts, I just slicked it off and put 98 back on it. there are no hardware conflicts. all the drivers are right. there are no beeps during bootup. the keyboard has no lights when I try num lock. wondering if I need a new mobo? Before we talk hardware... Do you have virus protection? Have you made any changes to your system lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]yes, I have Norton AV. but I havent been online yet since I slicked it off. the only THING I have done is SLICK it off and put 98 back on. then I put Norton AV, winzip, and the drivers it needed back on it, so its clean.Well, maybe it is your motherboard.... I'm not a motherboard specialist... Wait for ANOTHER member to assist you with that part.. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
[glb]Flame[/glb]what steps did you take to ensure that your video card and monitor are working correctly.  Also, you mentioned that you started hearing static and other noises coming through your speakers.  Is this an integrated sound card or is it removable?  Since your sound card is the one that is at least giving you some physical signs that something ain't right, I would first remove the card from the machine or disable it if it's integrated.  I've seen cards do some wierd things so you never know.

After that, I would see how it runs.  I would try out another monitor on the machine if you have one.  And if you can, I would also try a different video card.  But make sure you do all of this one at a time so you can eliminate what's working and what's not.  Let me know how everything comes along.I did what you said, actually before I got ur reply. I guess the sound card was, in fact, conflicting somehow. I replaced the video card, the monitor, and the sound card with some of mine and turned it back on and guess what? I got video! Then I put them all back as original one at a time and found the sound card was at fault. hmmmmm. wow. thanks for the help.   Another pc problem solved   good...............try using dxdiag in the run box;)there are no beeps during bootup

that right there is the golden egg Cheers!

Solve : Computer wont switch back on??

Answer»

I was using the computer the other day and for some REASON it completely shut down on me. When i TRIED to switch it back on nothing HAPPENED.
The light is on inside but the power must be stopping somewhere as theres isnt as much the initial beeps when the computer switches on.
But any kind of hardware that requres the power of the tower to power up dont show the lights to say their working, (adsl, mouse, keyboard etc).
Im completely confused about this i cant see what the problem is, ive openend the computer and gave it a good clean so dust isnt a problem anymore so it should be working.
Its not the power lead ive tried 2 now, even changeing fuses but the internal light is on ANYWAY.

Could do with some help on this on guys, all ideas are apreciated So you've tried two different power supplies with the same results?  Well, now it's time to narrow it down to other pieces of hardware.  What type of CPU do you have?  If it's a slot 1, make sure it's tightly secured.  Then I'd start by taking out all the necessary hardware you don't need in the system to make it run and see if it'll power up.  If it does, then one by one, start putting back in other pieces of hardware until you find the culprit.

I've seen a BAD modem prevent a computer from powering up before so anything is possible.  Try and and let me know.  If you need additional help, you can contact me at ResourcePC.

Solve : Re: Computer will not boot up?

Answer»

Quote

* My computer at HOME will no longer boot up.
* It had been SLOWING down a lot lately, taking 10+ minutes to boot, but running OK once it was up.
* Now, it just comes up to the FIRST screen during the boot up process and quits.
* It's a 2 year old "Median" computer with Windows XP home.
* Is this a hardware problem or a software problem?
* Is it toast?

Questions:
1.  DSL/cable OR dial-up internet connection?
2.  XP-Home with SP2?
3.  Anti-virus with latest updates?
4.  Software FIREWALL?
5.  Anti-Spyware program?

Could be hardware, could be software.  DEPENDS what you mean by "...it just comes up to the first screen during the boot up process and quits..."

6. Explain "1st screen", explain "quits".

Is it "toast"?  Not yet!

Solve : Help: reproducible hang & no video?

Answer»
IBM Desktop ThinkPad P4.  Good for 1 year.  Started to have sudden system hang irregularly and no video.  Need to power-off to get it back.  Once every few days initially.  Now several times in 1 hour.

TRIED a hardware diagnostic programme (BurnInTest), which tests for DIFFERENT hardware components individually or simultaneously.  When I tested everything TOGETHER (CPU, RAM, DVD-RW, 2-D graphic, sound, harddisk, network) the hang consistently appeared at AROUND 45 seconds to 1 minute.  If I tested the last 4 components simultaneously, the hang would appear much later (3-4 minutes).  If I tested the first three components together, the hang would appear SOONER (around 1 min).  No consistent result if I tested the components individually.  Seems that if I stressed the system hard, the hang would appear sooner.

What possibly could be wrong?  A defect somewhere in the CPU?

TIA for advice.

Solve : confusaled?

Answer»

???I acquired an IBM thinkpad and I reformatted it fine and then did the system transfer, that when fine know I am at c:\> and can not get passed. It shows a blip of windows 98 and startup and goes right to c:\> whats next? I am lost! Depends on what you want to do:
Q.  Install Windows?
A.  How to install Microsoft Windows 98It shows a blip of the logo at startup than it goes right to the C: prompt. I f put in the windows bootup disk it goes to the safe mode screen. But I do not see why I would need to go to safe mode ANYMORE I just want to be able to get back to windows 98. I ALSO have no CD drive it would have to be done without CDrom support.
I am in the process of acquiring one but untill then can I do anything? You have not installed Windows, you have only formatted the C-drive (which means you have wiped it clean).  Since you have no CD drive (and apparently no Windows CD), how were you planning to install Windows 98?I have 2 options.
1 acquire an external cd rom drive
2 use my crossover cable and ethernet adapter etc. to acquire windows 98 from my desktop, but the last TWO times I have attempted it I had to either dump windows 98 or my whole system. I have the directions for the ethernet card and the pci card but I am afraid it will screw up by desktop yet again.#2 will not work because you have no Operating System (Win98) on the ThinkPad.  The PCMCIA card will need Windows.  You could do it under DOS, but if you are having this much trouble...forget it.

Why not remove the hard drive from the ThinkPad and install it as a SLAVE drive to the desktop?  You need one of these:

http://www.bixnet.com/adfor25to35h.html
That is an option I have never heard of but since at this point I have nothing to LOOSE, I will try it!
Thanks!Excellent suggestion by Computer Commando! I have done this before myself. Just copy the entire win98 folder over to the slaved drive and put it back in the laptop. Then boot from a 98 startup floppy and navigate to c:/win98> and type "setup".

Solve : Sound- Ports and Problems?

Answer»

Soundcard= Chaintech 7.1 Channel pci product = VIA ENVY 24PT

Problem- for my speakers, i have the ports on my computer on the sound CARD and on the front of the case. the only one that will work is the one on the case, and that is run through the sound card. i wouldn't mind that only this port works but, the port is dumb and only the left speakers work... i have to DIP the plug in water and stick it in order to get surround sound and that only lasts til the water comes out or w/e. also, my sound card has not passed the WINDOWS Logo TESTING.... i don't think this is the REASON of the failure of my ports though... but then again i'm wrong a lot.

Not the Problem- the 7.1 sound thing that requires 7 speakers is not the problem. also, in the device manager there is no contradicting problems or w/e. pleeease help.

Solve : Onboard Video failed/add agp or pci video?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario and from the BEEP codes I have determined that the onboard video has failed. 1 long and 2 short. I have removed everything and reseated it. I tried adding a PCI and an AGP video card but I can not get any response. I am guessing there is a setting for what video card to use first but since I can not get anything to show up on the screen I can not change any settings. I can not find any jumpers to disable the onboard video. The keyboard lights come on and there is hard drive activity so I think everything is functional. How do I get in to change the BIOS settings without a monitor? I am out of ideas. Please helpAre you saying this Compaq has onboard video AND an AGP slot?  Never seen one with both.  If PCI video card is used, it must be located in slot NEXT to AGP slot or the PCI slot closest to the CPU.This is a Compaq Presario S4300NX with onboard integrated Intel Extreme Graphics that does not work any more. It has 1 AGP 8x slot and 3 PCI slots. I tried all the slots. I tried theonly jumper on the motherboard and I think it RESET the BIOS. The beeping stopped but nothing else works. I am ready to give up.I FORGOT about Compaq's use of the Intel Extreme Graphics.  I have no idea what makes it operate.  It's onboard video but not AGP or PCI.  It somehow uses main memory for video memory, but you have no control on how much it uses.

Since the beeping stopped, you GETTING closer.  Try installing the AGP video card, reset the BIOS, and then power up.

Yes i am the  administrator. How can i install the missing control panel options? Thanks for the help...

Control Panel---Add/Remove Programs---Windows Setup.  BTW, Win98 has no Administrator function.  If that doesn't work, you will have to re-install Win98 "over" your existing installation.  Reinstalling will not delete any of your existing applications or data, but it will revert back to IE5 and will not include any Windows Updates.  If you must do this, FIRST download a Full "Admin" install of IE6.

Solve : No signal to monitor/No windows boot??

Answer»

I have a Gateway 933XL computer bought in 2000 running Windows 98SE. Up until last week, it was running fine. Now, whenever I turn it on, it powers up, but my monitor which has power doesn't receive a signal so it does not give me any display. I get no other sign that the computer is booting up either other than the COOLING fan running. Usually, there's a THUNDERCLAP sound effect as the desktop shows up, but now nothing but fan and dark monitor. Any ideas?Have you made any hardware changes? have you Tried a different monitor?Do you have virus protection? Made any changes to your system recently?

[glb]Flame[/glb] Quote

Try another monitor.
No recent hardware changes.
Motherboard monitor port quit 2 yrs ago. Using VGA card port up until it quit (not sure if tha is the problem)
DVD burner addition and extra RAM 1.5 yrs ago.
Reloaded windows with no problems a few weeks back.
Other aural indications of proper boot aren't there so I am wondering if the monitor/port is really the problem or not.
Could this be a BIOS/CMOS issue?
Trying to get smart on this stuff.
Hi JJ, have you checked that all connections are secure? Monitor cable, Card, etc. They sometimes tend to work loose with time.
jimChecked and reseated all connections with no results. I am starting to think that it is not the monitor at all but with the computer boot process. What could be the problem?Hi JJ,

I am of the same mind. Trouble is, I went to Gateway site and couldn't FIND "933XL". Do you have a serial number for the motherboard? What is the new video card? I am wondering about that card, condition, compatability, etc. Even though you've been using it for a while.
The more information, the closer to the fix!

Oh, yeah there was not battery on the mother board my friend had given me but did require one, which i had.Because i had taken several computers apart and rebuilt it but never had this problem. Well, anyways now when I turn the computer on it just stays blank with a cursor blinking I doesn't even read the devices connected to it or run the memory. (power on self test, a normal computer will give you 1 beep, a pc with a parity error will give off 3 beeps etc etc)Good news
I did a little more playing around, tried unplugging various pci cards and such, and removed other drives. In the process, I unplugged and reseated the power input to the HDD. Next time I powered up the beast, it worked fine. No more problems. Thanks for all your inputs. Quote

Solve : Echoing Sound?

Answer»

Hey there! I updated my direct X drivers, to fix my graphics problems (now fixed), but now my sound is echoing... I tried to download my latest drvers from http://www.creative.com , but when I tied to install them, I got the message that no Sound Blaster card was DETECTED... It seems ok in the DXDIAG window, and in the Device Manager... Any idea how to get these drivers to work or how to STOP the echoing? Also, I am using Windows XP Pro, and I have scanned for viruses, etc. No luck...  Please assist!  no microphones plugged in then?what soundcard is it? Creative labs has a media player that it's CARDS will default to using and therein has a built in 'mixer' that actually has all kinds of differnt settings for sound, like Auditorium/Studio/Concert Hall etc, this may be the cause of your sound woes.

one more thing, from the device manager, uninstall the soundcard, reboot, then reinstall them. It's a Soundblaster Live! card... (We spoke over IM which is how I got the info.)

Solve : Computer won't boot after replacing battery?

???My friend decided to replace the cmos battery in his computer and since then Windows won't start.  Over the phone, I walked him through trying to use his emergency disk and he's getting messages that the hard drive partition can not be found-does not exist...any ideas?
Very strange behavior.

We just did a CLEAN install of W98SE last week.  System is as follows:

PCChips M74LMRT motherboard
Intel PIII processor
86MB RAM
8GB hard drive
Win98SE
The BIOS probably just lost the hard drive settings.  They need to go into the BIOS and configure or auto-configure the drives. Quote

I thought the same as you...we did go into bios (again, over the phone) and all of the drive settings were "auto" with the floppy being first in the boot order, followed by the hard drive.  It SEEMS that bios went to default settings after the battery was replaced.  Can't be sure until i can get the computer here to have a more thorough look-see.

have you tried to load the failsafe default settings on the bios? Quote

I'll be doing that this morning when he drops his tower off for me to have a look...ever try talking a novice through bios SCREENS and DOS commands over the phone?  Gives me an appreciation for tech support folks back in the 90s...must have been a good time.
lol ROGER THAT!!! Good times indeed.

Solve : fix programmes?

Answer»

is there any recommended programmes to detect and fix errors on the computer?

Iwas looking at something like first aid, but wondered if it would help me.

I currently get lots of screen freezes & error messages inc:

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR,
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OE_EQUAL
and 'disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing.

I have a giga-byte ga7va rev x1 MOTHERBOARD which i updated the driver on a couple of days ago, which seems to have made it much, much worse.  When i try to revert to last good settings nothing changes.

There is a exclamation sound on startup as well.

phew! alot to go through, please help! You can get an EXPLANATION at:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ogli.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ogli.asp

The driver update is the most likely cause. Rolling back the driver MAY be a good option.

Good luck.  create a BART cd on a buddy's pc (Bootable Antivirus Recovery and Troubleshooting cd) then boot the pc with the cd in the tray, goto the system restore options and select a date when everything was ok. Get System Mechanic 5 trial software here: http://www.iolo.com/sm/index.cfm and run it once you get up and going Cheers.where can you roll back the driver for the motherboard???

Solve : Trying to change from USB to PCI Ethernet.?

Answer»

I have a broadband cable connection, and right now I am using a USB cable to connect to the MODEM right now.  I found a PCI Ethernet Controller card in an old computer I have, and PUT it in this computer I am using right now.  Windows recognizes it but says it can't find any drivers for it.  How do I figure out what my PCI ethernet card is so I can look for drivers on the web, or is there something else I could do?  I looked on the card, and didn't see, like a particular name.  It CAME out of an older HP Pavilion 6470Z computer.  It was given to me, so I don't know for sure if it is an original part, or added.  Have no way to contact this person, don't know who they are or exactly where they are.  The hard drive went out on it so I have been canabilizing it trying to FIX up other computers I am trying to get to work. You're making the right move.  Ethernet is for networking (hence the name Ethernet).  USB is for peripheral devices.  What version of Windows?  Look at the chips on the card, you usually can figure it out from that.

HP Pavilion PC Model 6470Z (CAN/US) - Product Specifications

From the spec sheet, it appears the ethernet card was added afterwards. If Windows didn't tell you the brand/model then you will have to get it off of the card itself.  This is normally printed directly on the card, not on a label.

A new card is pretty cheap, less than $20.00.  Might be worth the time you save.Windows 98se.I found the drivers, works fine now, thank you.for future reference, a free program like Belarc Advisor (get it here:http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) or Sandra Lite (get it here:http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10018691.html?legacy=cnet)

will actually tell you specifically what hardware you have Cheers

Solve : Digital Camera not recognised?

Answer»

I think this is a multi point problem. I bought a new Praktica DCZ8VR 8 megapixel camera off eBay last week, and whatever I do the PC isn't seing it. I've loaded the drivers from the disc, and downloaded from Prakticas website, tried device manager, reloaded bios defaults, anything I can think of, and I'm STUMPED.

Also last week, my USB ports turned themselves off. Couldn't PRINT or download from my USB music thingy. I've solved that (by resetting the bios defaults), but I can't get the camera to work. Any IDEAS Davewithington.......What operating system are you using ?   Do you have any other USB devices on your system ? Did you receive a manual for the camera and its software with the camera ?

let us know

dl65  Microsoft XP Pro is my system. yes I did have a manual with the camera and yes I have followed the instructions, and no it still doesn't work. Only device I have CONNECTED full time is my printer. I connect the USB chip when I want to load or modify files on my wifes music player.Davewithington..... Does your system see the camera when you PLUG it into a USB port ?

dl65  NoDavewithington.....I couldnt find a link to your camera on the Praktica site ....do you have a link ....I was looking for the manual .....

dl65  Its on the Praktica German site

http://www.praktica.de/index.php?

Right at the bottom of the page, DCZ 8 VR

Can't see a manual though, only drivers.

Solve : possible power source problem??

Answer»

I was playing a game tonight and all of the sudden my COMPUTER shuts off.  It was as if someone had jst PULLED the plug on it.  And every since it happened I have not been able to turn it back on.  When I try it does nothing.  All I hear is the power butten being pushed and that's it.  Could this be a problem with my power source or could it be something else.
thankscouple things to check:

1- look to see if your powersupply has an extra plug (some do where you can connect the monitor) if it does try to plus in a monitor or a small appliance there like a radio. If it WORKS then we know you have juice.

2- have you added a bigger videocard like a GeForceFX or 6000 line from nVidia? They generally require ALOT of power and most even have a plug to the powersupply itself.

3- have you overclocked your system at all without upgrading to a bigger PSU (power supply unit)? OC'ing can cause all kinds of gremlins to pop up.

4- do you have a problem with 'dirty power'? I.E> is the pc connected STRAIGHT to the wall and not a UPS (uniterruptible power supply unit, which kicks in whenever a brownout or power shortage occurs allowing you to save data/shut down safely by providing you with 'x' minutes of power)?

5- check pc CASE for alot of dust bunnies etc. that may be causing your system to overheat, a can of compressed air will fix those (just be sure to do a quick-spray into your palm first to check for 1st time condensation coming out) and use short bursts to clear out the pc case.

Solve : pc power down problem?

Answer» HI,

My PC won't power down. It goes to close down and then restarts. I've changed the power supply - to no effect.

Any ideas on diagnosis and/or fix gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,

TomasWhich operating system are you using? Do you have virus protection?

[glb]Flame[/glb]If (LIKE me) you just push the power button down once to SHUT it down (a feature of XP) instead of going to Start-Turn Off COMPUTER etc, then it may be a setting is all. Also run a full system scan on your pc ALONG with the demo of Spyware Doctor, it sounds as if you may have a malware problem. But check the Power options first Cheers.

Solve : Sound Issues with Yahoo Messenger?

Answer»

I have no clue where this should be posted, but I'll give this place a WHACK.  I have a computer that I am working on. Sound card has been replaced. I get sound with everything, except yahoo messenger. If I go into a chat room with sound or try to turn sound on while instant messaging or conferencing, it locks this computer up. I can play GAMES, listen to cd's and listen to anything on media player or real player and the sound is fine. Any ideas. I have uninstalled and reinstalled messenger about 15 times and this offered no help either. Windows xp is the o/s.How much RAM do you have? Have you tried running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ?

[glb]Flame[/glb]There is 512 of Ram and all windows updates have been done. This only happens using Yahoo messenger when voice is activated in either instant messages or voice chat in the room. I've checked everything I know to check as far as settings and nothing is muted ANYWHERE. I get sound with everything else. This has me just totally baffled. I have never come across anything like it. I've said more than one or two bad words trying to figure this out. Thanks so much for responding and I'm open to trying anything that anyone can suggest at this point.  Yes, throwing the computer out of the window IS an option.try to uninstall yahoo messenger, then re-install it, ALSO get the latest java virtual machine from

Solve : Adding Second Hard Drive that has existing data?

Answer»

My son's computer was shipped via airline and after unpacking it a noise could be heard coming from the inside which turned out to be a dislodged heat sink/fan from the processor. We attempted to start the computer however it would not get past the RAM capacity in startup.  We decided to take the hard drive out of his computer and PLACE it in mine, if this is possible? If this is possible could you please tell me the procedure to FOLLOW. Thanks  what os are you trying to put the USED drive into? if its xp  and old drive was98 or newer it will work just make sure you put the jumpers right as your used drive set to the slave and your main drive as main  not as cable select IVE done it and it works or you can just boot from that used drive if it had the os on it somtimesether way your files youll be able to getAlso note, that if your son's computer was radically different from yours AND he had windows XP loaded on it, then you may actually encounter a problem with the operating system asking you to install the ms key for it since windows XP has a built-in safeguard that detects changes in hardware to ward off piracy of Microsoft operating SYSTEMS.

Solve : Monitor "flashes" Proble,?

Answer»

mJust the other day I was PLAYING Counter-Strike 1.6 (Half-Life 1 Based Game) and my monitor started "flashing". Basically it will start getting really faded/white until it is completely white and then it while start quickly FADING back into color. This happens after about 4-5mins of being in game and continues to do so every few minutes.

Also if I alt-tab out of the game or exit the game the SCREEN flashes oddly with a very light/neon green color for about 3/4 of a sec and then resumes to normal.

I though maybe heat was the issue since I haven't cleaned out my comp in a while so I dusted it completely and still the same result.

Specs are as follows

NEC Accusync 95F monitor
Intel P4 2.53ghz CPU
Asus P4T533-C mobo
512mb of RDRAM(1066)
Two 80G Maxtor 7200RPM (8MB Cache)
Geforce FX 5600 256mb
SB Audigy 2
How old is your monitor?  You never know, it may just be on its way to its deathbed...and/or does not support the resolution and refresh rate that you are running.I say DEATH bed, My brothers is green now while he plays C.S
its still got a little bit of life in it!strangely enough changing drivers fixed it...seems to come back every 4 or 5 days though...then I just uninstall and reinstall the same drivers and it works again.
