Solve : AMD 790FX Chipset? 9850 vs 9950? Other Q's... Suggestions? THANKS :D?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

I was wondering what the Advantages of getting a 790FX CHIP set motherboard would be... The current build I am looking at is

ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX
(maybe ASUS M3N72-D AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a)
4 gig Corsair Dominator DDR2 800
EVGA GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB
Phenom 9950 Black

Would it be better for me to get THE 750a Sli for an easier upgrade such as adding an additional 9800gx2? Also, I heard that the Phenom 9850 uses less power and can be overclocked as high as the 9950.

I already have a PSU, but its 600w Is that enough for the above plus 4 hard drives? If it is than I am guessing it isn't enough for two 9800gx2's.

If you have any suggestions or replacements AROUND the same price, LET me know... THANKS Guys!!1st only reason for a 790 is sli and a 750 has more probs then the 790 and it also depends on your psu honelsty i THINK 600 watts isnt enough really no matter what for that card but thats just me790FX Is CrossFire not sli. the 750a is sli. I guess I will look into PSU'sooooo sorry was thinkin intel boards lol

Solve : HDD swap?

Answer»

Hello all!, I have a Pentium 3 500mhz which I'm using right now. But I also have a P4 2.1ghz that all it needs is a HDD. So can I take my HDD from the P3 and put it into the P4 and have the files and windows xp from my P3 on my P4 without reformatting and all that?I think you will need the Windows CD to varify it's a legitimate copy of Windows because XP will detect there has been a massive hardware change. So according to what your saying Carbon Dudeoxide It should work? As long as I have the Windows CD? If that is correct then I'm going to be a happy man.I'm not 100% on this. You will have to WAIT for SOMEONE else to confirm this.

However, from my experience, I needed to reactivate Windows.I forgot one more point. You will have to install all the appropriate drivers for the other computer before you put the HD in the other computer otherwise it will not work properly with the other system.Hmm... Sounds easy enough. I think ill attempt it. I wouldn't do it if I were you. It will take a lot longer to try to tweak all of the drivers and other settings than it would to just reinstall windows. And reinstalling windows would make sure that there aren't any driver conflicts or anything else to screw up the system.
I've been reading the Windows xp certification book and it says that the hard drive controller and hardware abstraction layer need to be identical on both systems. That is kind of doubtful if you are changing motherboards.your first boot should be fun, considering windows will be trying to use all the drivers from the P3, like IDE controllers, Graphics card, Sound card, network card, etc, not to mention motherboard. Almost all of these will fail to load.

Reactivation is likely the least of your worries in this case.Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 27, 2008, 08:30:37 PM

Reactivation is likely the least of your worries in this case.
I second that.Kenter,But you will have one small blessing the hdd (which came out of an H.P.--example only) and is now in a dell (or whatever--again example only) will still think it is in the H.P. and will identify itself as such.Only thing is as it looks around for Friends it knows in the sandbox it won't find any and as others and Elvis said "that's where your heartaches begin".Some good advice has been given as to how to BEST proceed. goodluck, truenorthI have done hd swaps on identical or near identical models. Otherwise I would not try it.Funny. I just finished building my new system. Everything is new except the hard drive, which came from my old system. I was going to format and reinstall Windows since I had taken the time to back it up.

Well, I mistakenly forgot to set my DVD drive as the first boot device so it went straight into loading Windows. New processor (from single core to Core 2 DUO), motherboard (same manufacturer, very different model), memory (from DDR to DDR2), video card (different manufactuer, and PCI Express instead of AGP), sound card (still Creative, but different model)... all new, but oddly enough, Windows booted right up and was ready to install the new hardware.

Funny... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Another Method.Patio your a hero man that article (I guess we could call it that) you posted is amazing I was on the brink of giving up and then I read your post and now I'm a happy man!!

++Kudos to patio++Glad it worked for you and Welcome Aboard !

Solve : Computer freezes/restarts when gaming?

Answer»

Howdy, I werent sure where to put it so I'll try here.
So about two weeks ago I finally got my new computer built up.
But a new computer rarely comes without its problem. After some playing my computer tends to either freeze, get a blue screen with lots of numbers and restart, turn black and automatically restart or show lots of weird colors on the screen and freeze.
Yeah I know, it may seem a lot. But I suspect this may be from the same problem.
Reasons I believe so is because all this happens after I've played for some time.
It may be an hour, or two hours.
I'm a bit confused, since I've managed to play a four hours Supreme Commander (Which is a pretty high demanding game) match without anything happened.
While playing games like WoW, Crysis or Rainbow six vegas, my PC freezes after minimum 2 hours. Even with Supreme Commander it has stopped sometimes. So I get the feeling this is pretty random.
First I suspected this may be because my Radeon 4870 x2 2 gig had a GPU temperature of 85 c without me even playing. So I got fan program and configured my graphic CARD fan speed from 25% to 55%. That resulted in a temperature drop from 85 c to 40 c.(This is also without any form for overclocking)
This actually did improve my playtime without my computer crashing a little. But still, after some playing my computer crashes.
So I don't suspect overheating being the issue alone. Actually, I'm so frustrated right now, I have no idea

What I have noticed though, is a blinking ORANGE light on my mother board near my graphic card. While all the other lights are green, this one is orange.
If the light indicates anything about my graphic card, or my mother board, I don't know.
I don't suspect anything being wrong with my graphic card, since it runs Crysis really smood without any lagg, but I may be wrong.
What I can see near the light is either HD_LED or HD_LFD (Pretty hard to see).
I've also taken some pictures if that may help:

I've also managed to get a fast picture of the blue screen before it restarted if that's helpful.

Sorry for the bad quality.

I hope some of this helps, since I got little knowledge when it comes to computers.
Oh, and i apologizes for bad English and wall of text =P
Anyways, I hope for some help and thanks you in advance ^^
Bump, can anyone take on this problem?
I don't seem to be able to view any of the pictures except this one:

Thanks for the help, could anyone take a look at the pictures and see if anything is out of the ordinary?

Oh and i just noticed that i wrote CPU insteed of GPU at my first post in this thread.Do you have instructions / documentation for the motherboard which explains the readouts of the LED?Here is the manual. http://www.mediafire.com/file/gmdtyqnwngn/e3935_rampage_extreme.pdf
Ive tried to read trough it, but im a mess when it comes to these things. You dont mind taking a look? All right -- I downloaded the file, and I'll be HAPPY to read it, but I'll have to do it later.Page 3-31 of the manual gives short explanations of the LED's on the board. It's not very much, and I wasn't able to find more, YET. I'll have to think about it some more.Could very well be overheating, I would also recommend trying to fan the processor.Quote

Solve : White Streaks up and down Monitor..?

Answer»

I inherited an HP f2105 21" monitor from a neighbor and I want to try and fix it just for the EDUCATION. The problem is that when it is turned on the screen refreshes very slow and it has white streaks top to bottom. When I replaced it with a new one for my neighbor everything worked great and I've also tried it on a known good system so I know it's not computer or video CARD related. I get no hisses or screeches when it is turned on and left for over an hour. Also the mouse pointer leaves a huge white trail when you move it across the screen. I can't find ANYTHING on the net about this. Can someone direct me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for the help..If this problem continues on every computer you've tried it on, it is most likely a problem with the monitor itself.

What type of monitor is it? (LCD or CRT)Hewlett Packard f2105 LCD monitor. Yes, it's a problem with the monitor for sure. I'm trying to figure out if its the logic board or possibly the LCD itself. I probably won't be able to find parts very reasonable anywhere but I'd like to know why it's doing this. I've never seen a monitor do this before and it's only about 4 years old.Sometimes monitors break.

Something you can try. Look at the cable connecting the monitor to the computer. Can you find any bent pins or anything?Yea, I already checked the cables, used different cables and different machines and all the same. Your correct. The monitor is broken, but I just wanted to try and figure out exactly what was wrong. I think what has happened is a de-lamination or possibly a break somewhere in the polarizer layer in the LCD itself. From everything I've read this seems to be the most probable explanation. Obviously I'm not going to repair it, but it was fun taking it APPART to analyze. Thanks for your help. I think I'm going to give up on it at this point.Heh, you've managed to get inside your monitor?
I'm still having trouble opening up the one sitting on my shelf. , Yea, HP and Dell monitors are pretty easy to get open. Once you get the stand off (six SCREWS) the back cover pops off pretty easy. You just need to start it with a small screw driver, pushing in as you go around. Once the back is off it's just a matter of unscrewing "a lot" of philips screws and everything comes apart. The logic board, internal speakers, (if you have them), etc., all come out. The problem is that nobody wants to sell you the parts unless you know exactly what PN it is and HP, Dell, Compaq etc don't want to let you know unless your one off there "Certified" repair shops. The repair shops don't want to sell you parts. They'd rather you send them your monitor so they can charge you to fix it. Even if you get it apart and figure out what the problem is it's almost certain no one will work with you so you end up having to buy a new one any way. Yep. They're all after your money. ..it's funny how all these big box stationary stores are starting to offer computer repair. They get you to bring your box or laptop into the store and then try to tell you that it would be cheaper just to buy a new system. I don't think (apologies to anyone that works at one of these places), anyone there really would be able to fix something, but like you say ..they're all just in it for the money". Funny, though, I wish I could get some of that money, but I have a conscience. If you happen to get zapped by that opened monitor you'll never open another one...Quote from: patio on September 25, 2008, 05:14:04 PM

If you happen to get zapped by that opened monitor you'll never open another one...

Yea, your right.. would probably do me some good though. I hear electroshock therapy does wonders for stress and depression. lol Like when I was 11 years old. I liked to take apart electronics. One day I tried to strip the insulation off a power cord and forgot to unplug it OW!!:D ..my sister never forgave me for ruining her record player ..I never took a record player apart again! btw, the monitor is safely in the dumpster, now. I just wanted to figure out what the problam was, but couldn't really get any parts to fix it. I know. It doesn't, in most cases, make any sense to repair an LCD, at the prices you can get them for now a days...Actually it has never made sense to attempt to repair a monitor...
Many have tried though.

Solve : Hard Drives and FAT help?

Answer»

I know that what ever the SIZE of the hard drive the nuumber of sectors it will have changes.

But am I right that nomatter what the size of the hard drive FAT 16 will put use 65,526 clusters?

And nomatter what the size of your hard drive FAT 32 will only use 524,408 clusters?I must be mad but I'll run it past you one more time...

This quote was posted in response to your query here.. on the 2nd of this month...

Quote

# FAT12: The oldest type of FAT uses a 12-bit binary number to hold the cluster number. A volume formatted using FAT12 can hold a maximum of 4,086 clusters, which is 2^12 minus a few values (to allow for reserved values to be used in the FAT). FAT12 is therefore most SUITABLE for smaller volumes, and is used on floppy disks and hard disk partitions smaller than about 16 MB.

# FAT16: The FAT used for most hard disk partitions uses a 16-bit binary number to hold cluster numbers. When you see SOMEONE refer to a "FAT" volume generically, they are usually referring to FAT16, because it is the DE facto standard for hard disks. A volume using FAT16 can hold a maximum of 65,526 clusters, which is 2^16 less a few values (again for reserved values in the FAT). FAT16 is used for hard disk volumes ranging in size from 16 MB to 2,048 MB.

# FAT32: The newest FAT type, FAT32 is supported by Windows 95's OEM SR2 release, as well as Windows 98. FAT32 uses a 28-bit binary cluster number--not 32, because 4 of the 32 bits are "reserved". 28 bits is still enough to permit ridiculously HUGE volumes--FAT32 can theoretically handle volumes with over 268 million clusters, and will support (theoretically) drives up to 2 TB in size. However to do this the size of the FAT grows very large.
If you format a Drive that is 512 MB it will defalt to FAT 16 why both FAT 16 and 32 can use a 512 MB Drive so why defalt to FAT 16?Quote
why defalt to FAT 16?

Because that's the FAT system which allows the most efficient cluster addressing on that size of disk. So let's look at it again.

Quote
A volume using FAT16 can hold a maximum of 65,526 clusters, which is 2^16 less a few values (again for reserved values in the FAT).

Quote
FAT16: The FAT used for most hard disk partitions uses a 16-bit binary number to hold cluster numbers.

The maximum number of clusters is 65,526 and a 16-bit binary number is used to address them so the highest number addressed (65,526) is 16-bit binary 1111111111110110 (or splitting it into 2 bytes just so that it's easier to view 11111111 11110110)

Quote
FAT32 uses a 28-bit binary cluster number--not 32, because 4 of the 32 bits are "reserved".

Fat32 uses a 28 bit binary number to address clusters, the highest cluster address which can be addressed is binary 00001111 11111111 11111111 11111111 (I'll leave you to work out what that value is in decimal. Note that the binary shown is just a representation, the 'reserved' bits could appear anywhere in that representation) so the highest address is way outside the capacity of what are now known as 'small' hard drives, therefore no point in defaulting to the Fat32 system. Also the FAT (that's the actual File Allocation Table itself) would be twice the size it needs to be for that capacity hard drive.

Drive and cluster sizes will have been considered when the Format program you are using was designed. Also, remember that the Fat32 system was probably not around when the Fat16 system was designed, large capacity hard drives were simply not available.

You really should get down to reading this if you want to understand about the format of disks and File Allocation Tables.

Here's another bit of reading with a table showing drive size and default cluster sizes.

Solve : Strange mouse issue?

Answer»

I just bought the Logitech M-CW47 mouse and got it in the MAIL today. When I connected it to our old computer (HP Pavilion 7285, 200mhz with Windows 95), it was detected in the Logitech control panel as a Mouseman Wheel with four programmable buttons. (That's what it should be, right?)

Now, an interesting problem. When I ran Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, I tried to make the Z-axis (the wheel) make the game view PITCH up and down. When I did that, I was able to look up or down, but not both. Pressing any of the buttons also CAUSES the view to go all the way up or down, depending on what direction the view would have gone to when the scroll wheel was rotated. Same thing if I tried to move the mouse left or right in an attempt to look left or right.

Not only that, but the thumb button (button #4) would not make me crouch if I went to the controls and put that in for button 4. Under the Logitech control panel, there's several different things that button 4 can do. I'd have to find out what command needs to be given to get that to work right.

Re-installing the game didn't fix this problem. The same problem also happens in Quake II, and thus it is a driver issue. The buttons work fine under Windows directly.Did you install the Logitech drivers ? ?Yes. I installed Logitech Mouseware 8.30. (I got it from Driverguide.com) Quote from: Ryan on September 18, 2008, 09:25:28 PM

Yes. I installed Logitech Mouseware 8.30. (I got it from Driverguide.com)

Why not the ones that ship with the mouse ? ?
I don't exactly trust DriverGuide.

Disclaimer: This is an opinion and meant as such and is no in no way to be construed as a slam against Driverguide nor any of their staff, shareholders or other Co. employees including the janitor.I currently don't have a driver CD, and I don't have the one that originally came with the Logitech M-CW47.

I don't trust DriverGuide normally. I don't download from them unless I don't have the driver CD or floppy. One such case when I did use a driver from there was when I upgraded the driver for the Diamond Monster 3D. The original drivers didn't work well enough, and the upgrade fixed a potentially annoying graphic issue. (No need to mention that here.) That was a few weeks before I upgraded to the Monster 3D II.

I had contacted somebody from Logitech through their forums, and asked regarding the mouse. They suggested MouseWare 9.791. Well, I checked regarding hardware compatibility with that release of the drivers, and they are not compatible with Windows 95. I remembered that MouseWare 9.73 was the last release of the drivers that would work with Windows 95.

I had ordered a driver disc of MouseWare 9.6 off of eBay. It says on the disk that it will run on Windows 95, so no worries there. So if I can't get the full 4-button and scroll wheel functionality in Jedi Knight, I'm going to put away the M-CW47 mouse and STICK with the S35 mouse until I think about changing the operating system to Windows 98SE.From WHENCE did you buy a mouse, that they did not include the driver CD?

Let me go look at the Logitech website.

Here's a LINK to a Logitech forum in which a support specialist recommends a link that lets you download software. I'm going to let you read the thread and see if you want to try the recommended download. It's going to be tough to find Win95 drivers but Here would be the best place to start...Patio, that page was actually my topic on the Logitech forum. The person on that forum that replied said to use version 9.79, and that version of MouseWare is not compatible with Windows 95. (My computer's operating system told me.) I'm going to keep an eye on eBay until I see the M-CW47 with its original driver disc.Small World huh ? ?

Solve : Can I use an Old drive in a different computer???

Well just that actually.
Can I use the OLD drive with an operating system on it in another computer, and will it work on the other computer or will I "have to" FORMAT it and reload win xp?

and QUESTION 2 is
I just got this other computer it has an 80 gig SATA connected drive, 256 Ram 2.8 (I dont know) chip maybe? htz? TPG Brand Box.
When I plugged it in the screen was just black no data seems to be processed, It doesnt post and no beeps are audible.
Is this normal? Can I just load an O/S CD and install it to make it work?

IVE never done any of this sort of thing before, Ive ALWAYS just got them and everything worked from day 1, short of install programs here and there.
Any problems Ive had Ive always got my brother to fix, but he never teaches me how what or why.

For the first question, it is often possible to put an old Drive into another computer, and have it work. You will, however, need to perform a XP Repair using the XP CD (if you don't have one, your SOL for that method).

For the second question, the short answer is no- as far as that computer goes, it simply isn't POSTing- the problem lies within. Could be a number of problems, ranging from CPU or motherboard, to an Add-in card that the computer doesn't like. Thanks BC_Programmer for answering.
I have the disks so that should work Ok then.

The other computer... well I'll have to wait then till the guy I got it from gets back from Holidays and let him run me through its operation. Im sure he showed it to me working, just no O/S.
No rush with that one it was a cheap computer (Au$100). I just got it to play with.Normally you could just use the harddrive, because when you start it up it should ask you to verify the hardware changes. You should have to press F1 and everything should be good.Quote from: nalee on September 25, 2008, 02:32:19 PM

Solve : Power surge problem?

Answer»

Last NIGHT we had a power surge that shut off my computer and power strip. Now when i start my computer it says Overclock is failed HIT Del to enter BIOS but my USB mouse and keyboard aren't responding. So I plugged in a PS/2 keyboard and still not working. So i was thinking maybe it fried my mobo maybe?

Amd 5600x2
Sap. 3850
4 gigs ram
vista 32bitI'm sorry to say but you MAY be in a whole mess of problems now. A buddy of mine had a power surge with his.. Ended up frying his power supply, some of his RAM, harddrives and cd drive (I want to say mobo as well). Your going to have to find a way to test all your components.
That really stinks.. You should invest in a UPS. Might want to check with your powerstrip. Some of them have surge protectors on them and back it with a warranty. I know my UPS's states im covered up to $100k.

MacKIf I'm not mistaken overclock deals with your HD, or how hard you are making the Harddrive work.overclock is overclocking your cpu to run at higher frequinces did you overclock at all?? it does sound LIKE it could be the motherboard though could also be the psu it could be a lot of thingsUnplug the machine.
Remove a side panel and make SURE to touch the case to ground yourself.
Remove the CMOS battery from the MBoard...about the size of a dime.
While it's out hit the power button a few times to dissipate any stored energy.
After 10 minutes replace the battery...leave the side panel off for now.
Hook up the power and power up and see what happens...

Answer»

Hello, I got a project for the two processors I have found.

I will more than likely build a newer computer for my girlfriend. She has an old Dell

now. I have found an Athlon 64 3800 and a P4 2.53ghz Processor. Her favorite color

is Purple. Where can I find a purple case to house all of the stuff I can put inside of it? If your PLANNING to put the Athlon and P4 in the same computer as Dual processors- I don't think that will work...

As per the case, you'll need to get a standard case, and paint it yourself.macrip3 - BC's right ->you absolutely cannot use both the processors on the same motherboard.

As for color: http://www.shopping.com/xPP-pc_cases--exterior_color__search__purple. But painting yourself will allow you to get the exact color that you want.

Best of luck!No...I know that I cannot PLACE them both into one computer. I will build them both into two DIFFERENT computers. Which Processor should I use in the computer for my girlfriend?

Athlon 64 3800 or P4Quote from: macrip3 on September 21, 2008, 04:41:24 PM

No...I know that I cannot place them both into one computer. I will build them both into two different computers. Which Processor should I use in the computer for my girlfriend?

Athlon 64 3800 or P4

Not enough info I think the color Purple takes precedent over which processor you use in this build...
But that's just my observation.I know. I will search for one. If I paint this case, I will make the biggest mess anyone will ever see.

Which Processor is better? The Athlon is rated, I believe, at 2.4 gigahertz, just slightly slower than the P4 in your example. That's not a huge difference. It may come down to personal preference.

Others with more experience will post here, too.I'd choose the Athlon.
It will run cooler than the P4 and will also be faster.
the model number, although AMD denies it, does roughly correspond to the speed of P4 it competes against, so it's roughly equivalent to a 3.8GHz P4. I'd go on the conservative side and say a little less, but it's certainly more than a match for the Intel. Thanks, Calum -- I got my info from a review page that said the Athlon was rated at 2.4, but I, too, always thought the model number corresponded with its speed.Think ahead a little - both of these processors are dated. What motherboard will you use? How much memory will it support? What operating system will you use? (If Vista, use at least 2GB, more up to 4 GB if the board will handle it.) What are the COST differences (if important) between the Athlon system and the Intel system? (In this regard, I've only seen the P4 you MENTIONED paired up with RDRAM memory. Can it run with DDR memory?)

Have fun?!

The actual speed is 2.4, its rated speed (using one convention) is 2.8.
drmsucks also ash some good points to consider, IMHO either of those CPUs is only worth building a system round if you already have the parts.

Solve : Having trouble puting in a new hard drive and windows on my laptop?

Answer»

Alienware Area-51 m5750 Laptop
Core2 Duo 1.66ghz processor
512mb X2 ram
Fujitsu 80 sata HDD<----original

So a while back i was having trouble with windows, it would get to the main windows start up screen and the little scrolling bar would freeze, so i took it to GeekSquad and they told me it was a bad hard drive. I originally went ahead and told them to do it, but it cost so much, and they then told me that my windows recovery disk was bad and that i needed to get another one. Since i didnt want to wait for Alienware to take there sweet time sending me one i decided to just get my own hard drive and a new copy of windows.

So here is where my TROUBLES are at. After putting my hard drive in i proceed to start the windows instal. At first i got as far as windows setup saying "Setup is starting windows" and there it would hang up and i wouldnt be able to proceed any further. Well after being on the internet for an hour or so i found a forum where some one said that when windows setup first starts it will ask you to hit f6 if you want to install a third party RAID, but if you hit f5 it will take you to another screen where you can SELECT "standard pc... with I486"

From this POINT i think everything is fine, it gets past the the point where it freezes and i can choose to either instal repair or quit. When i hit either repair or install it tells me that there is no mass storage device detected and then resets.

I know that it is being detected because its in my bios, but the only thing im not sure about is that its being seen as a raid and not a hdd. To be honest i dont really know what raid is but i asked my uncle and he told me it shouldnt be like that

Another thing i thought might make a difference its that the original hard drive is a Fujitsu and the one i bought was a Hitachi. I dont think this would make a difference because GeekSquad was going to put in a Western Digital, but i thought i might throw that out there just in case.

I would appreciate any help that you can give.Quote from: donimmortal on September 22, 2008, 01:50:45 PM

but if you hit f5 it will take you to another screen where you can select "standard pc... with I486"

the I486 is a older Pre-pentium processor. give that it's top rated speed was around 120Mhz, I doubt that's what you have- this setting is BOUND to cause you problems down the road-

as for your hard drive problem, you were SO close! see, SATA was created AFTER windows XP, so you'll need the proper SATA and RAID drivers for your laptops motherboard. You'll need to get a hold of the proper drivers somehow, (I've no experience with SATA at all, so I really don't know how it goes down) and then select the f5 option to install the SATA drivers. (the fact that they support RAID is redundant)

Solve : what do i need to put two 9800 gx2 xlr8 pny's in sli?

Answer»

i recently bought one pny 9800 and i found out i needed a power source with an 8 pin connection. well the only on i could find had 2 8 pins so i figured i would get another one and sli them. my problem is i dont know what KIND of connection i need to sli them or how much watts i need power source wise to run them. If someone could pls help me i would appreciate iti cant tell you how much you need exactly, but i can tell you that i would not be purchasing a power supply less than 1000w.ok 1st why in the world would you need 4 of them!!! did you aready buy a second? quad sli scales even worse then dual I THINK if you MUST buy a second one for some unkown reason what is your motherboard?
i would agree with homer a 1000 watt power supply will doi dont think ill need a 1000w's or atleast not NORMAL continous power, i mean the cards will take 300 watts when under full load so i will need 600w for the cards and like 150 extra for the rest of the computer so i mean i ordered a power source with 750w contious and 1050 maximum contious i think that will do fine
Good luck with that...
You should have listened to Homer...Quote

750w contious and 1050 maximum contious

i have never heard of this term before. please EXPLAIN. also, if you could, please provide a link to the power supply you are purchasing.the link for the power source i am buying is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339002
if you go under specifications it shows u that is 9800 gx2 sli certified and ready it has the 2 8pin's i need as well as 4 6pins it says it can run them so why do i need one that is 1000w
also what is hybrid sli why did you ask for advice when you already made up your mind? you should have listened to my advice and heres why...

  • you want to SLI two 9800 GX2's
  • for one 9800 GX2 it is recommended that you have at least a 600w power supply, again thats for one 9800GX2
  • it is also recommended that the +12 volt RAIL(s) that will be supplying the supplementary power to the card(s) be capable of handling at least 28 Amps.
  • the 750w PSU that you chose is only capable of 19Amps per 12v rail
  • 150w for the rest of the computer is nothing. a Q6600 CPU under full load will DRAW up to ~110w, leaving 40 watts for the fans, harddrives, RAM, optical drives...
  • do i need to go on? ? ?

Quote
if you go under specifications it shows u that is 9800 gx2 sli certified

its hybrid 9800GX2 SLI certified.

Quote
it says it can run them

where does it say this?

Quote
so why do i need one that is 1000w

read above...

Quote
also what is hybrid sli

sigh... your coming to your own conclusions without knowing all the facts, that, my friend, is a recipe for disaster. hybrid SLI is not combining two independent video cards, it is combining a video card with an onboard video card. hybrid SLI can only be done on certain motherboards that have onboard video cards and support this function. hybrid SLI can also only be done using certain independent video cards, such as the 9800GX2.

Solve : Video cards and power supplies?

Answer»

I am a newbie here, but really have gotten alot of great information and help from the other posts. However, I just bought an Acer M410, 2gb, 160 HD, ATi graphics internal, AMD Athlon Dual Core. I will probably upgrade to 4 gb. The Ati Radeon x 1200 IGP integrated video is installed. I do video editing, no gaming, is this video card ADEQUATE or should I upgrade the video? If so I have only 250 watts power and hate to get a larger power supply? Any help is appreciated.

Posse 14You'll need to define "adequate" for yourself

But, I've always found that, everything else equal, a system runs quicker with a discrete video card. Doesn't have to be new or fancy (I usually look back at reviews that are approx a year old and pick a card that was in the top 25% or so) but, today you probably want 512 MB of memory (certainly 256 MB).

You are right about the power supply - seems LIKE Acer sized that to the milliwatt! If you replace it, verify that a "standard" power supply will work. I don't know about Acer, but many OEM's use funky, custom supplies.

Good luck!

Solve : I think my video card is dying.?

Answer»

Or maybe it's my motherboard. I would much rather have it be the former...anyway, my computer is having issues. I went onto google chrome and my computer froze. The screen went black, MONITOR went into power-save mode (which happens when it doesn't get a signal from the video card), and my keyboard and mouse shut off. So i did a cold restart, and i got a black screen, but at the top left it listed my video card: X1950Pro256m or something to that nature. My first guess: video card took a crap. So, i restarted again, got into windows, and tried again. Same thing. My motherboard beeps 5 times when i boot up the pc, but there is sixth beep that occurs immediately after the second beep (so it's like beep..beep(beep)..beep..beep..beep). I don't know what it means, but when i push the restart button on the front of my case, i hear one beep. So i put two and two together, and figured that that is the phantom sixth beep i hear upon booting. anyway, knowing a successful restart would trigger a single beep, i waited for it. didn't hear it, and my computer didn't restart. tried again, and this time, it took a good 15 seconds before the beep occurred, and during which time, the monitor was in power-save mode (i'm wondering if that individual beep indicates my video card is working). after the beep, it got to my mobo's splash screen, and the screen froze, but i could still pick my operating system from the list (once highlighted, it showed up over the splash screen, which didn't go away). with the splash screen still unmoving, in the top left i saw 'starting up...' and then it froze again. so, i removed the dvi cable from the left PORT on the card, put it in the right port, and voila! it WORKS fine. so the question is: video card, motherboard, or less likely but still possible, power supply?sir try to generally clean your MOTHERBOARDS slot i think theres a lot of dust on it... if you have air compressor much better... and also clean the slots of your ram and video card using eraser... hope it can help...Quote from: nehemaih on September 12, 2008, 06:19:21 AM

if you have air compressor much better

I think he means to used a can of compressed air. The kind that you can buy at most electronic stores or wal-mart. Never use an air compressor as you can damage the compentslol yeah i figured as much. i planned on replacing the card soon anyway, so it's not really a big deal. once i replace it i'll be able to clean the board and what not.Was the system working before you tried using google chrome?it was doing something like this for a few weeks before i used google chrome, but it never actually restarted my system and caused it to FAIL to boot. btw i've had the dvi cable plugged into the other dvi port on the card, and everything is running smooth as silk. i'm guessing it's my card, but it'll be replaced soon anyway.Quote from: Aegis on September 24, 2008, 02:29:03 AM
Was the system working before you tried using google chrome?
Also, do you find that your bank account has suddenly been drained? Have you acquired random credit card charges for viewing AdSense Ads?

...no, but that's very unnerving, lolI can second the motherboard thing, I just went through the same thing and had to replace mine.

Solve : LCD Monitor Says No Signal Until Windows Starts?

Answer»

Topic seems self-explanatory. The monitor works fine once Windows is up and running, but obviously this prevents me from doing some things before then. It's also just disconcerting.

I'm running a Dell DM051with an ATI Radeon x300/x500/x1050 video card. My monitor is a GATEWAY HD2200. Any help is much appreciated.Have you tried hitting ESCAPE, Delete or F10 at startup to initiate the VGA driver ? ?
How new is this machine ?
It could also be a power saving scheme...check both in Power Management inside Control panel and also in your MBoard documentation...Haven't tried hitting buttons, will give it a go. The computer is about two years OLD. I can't see anything under power options that would be a cause of this. Where do I find documentation on the motherboard?Check the MBoard manuf. website...they usually offer the Manual as a free DLoad.Try Running Services.msc. then locate your display driver service and open its properties, then SET it to start up automatically. then restart your computer and see if that works.

I'm sorry to say but you may be in a whole mess of problems now.

Good luck,
MacKSince you replaced the power supply & assuming it is good i would say the mother board was taken out with the power surge. When you get it up and running buy a surge protector .Keep posted on resultsThanks, the computer is in one of the classrooms, so they wont give it and UPS for that one. Solve : Confusion over DVD Terms?

Answer»

This may be a ridiculous, stupid or easy question (not that, I have been told, any question is actually stupid) but can anyone tell me whether a DVD-ROM will play on a drive that plays DVD-video's and reads and writes DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD-R/CD-RW.

To put this question in context, I am thinking of buying PHOTOSHOP CS3, which COMES on a "DVD-ROM" disc.a DVD Burner will be able to read a DVD ROM.

The way I've always thought of it is as "levels". a CD-ROM drive is the LOWEST level, it can only read CD-ROMs. a CD-Burner, is the next level, and can also write to CD-R's and CD-RWs, and still has the ability to read CD-ROM discs.

The same type of LOGIC applies for DVDs, in that any DVD drive will be able to read DVDs, but only burners canwrite to DVD +-Rs or RWs.Thanks. I think that helps.

Solve : Vista and printer?

Answer» I recently bought a laptop and got my first introduction to Windows Vista. So far I've had only the usual grips of learning where the heck is everything. But when I went to hookup my printer, that all changed.

I have a little Lexmark Z515 inkjet that uses a USB port. The software off the disc seemed to load correctly and everything looks good. The computer shows that I do indeed have the printer available.

However, everytime I attempt to print something I get that audible, "cannot communicate with printer" message.

The printer still WORKS with my XP desktop. Pulling hair here. Anyone have a clue?
First, did you download drivers for vista off their website?
http://downloads.lexmark.com/perl/downloads/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:0:0:0
Just type in Z515 and download vista (not vista 64) drivers. If you were using the CD it may only come with XP drivers or something silly like that and it may not be compatible.

My only thought would be to go to start, and in the little search box (doubles as the run box from XP) type services.msc, and scroll down to where it says Print Spooler, is the service started? If not, double click on it and hit start and see if that changes anything.

Chances are that if it isn't started then there is already a problem and manually starting it won't work-but at least it will give you an error to work off of. Also, lexmark drivers tend to be/are awful (no offense obviously), I've seen a LOT of people have problems with communication issues, and particularly noticeable in the services.

Another service to check on that list is lex and see if that ONE is RUNNING or if you can manually start it. I don't use a lexmark printer so I don't have the exact name of the service, sorry, but I was actually WORKING on one yesterday for a friend.

Vista is doing very well, I'd chose it over XP anyday, when I switch from my Vista desktop to my XP laptop I feel all LEFT alone in the dark and clumsy. A lot of support/drivers are out for it now, so I feel confident you'll be able to find a fix. Sorry about the long reply, I'm putting off work.

Good luck!I would:

1) Make certain that the printer is powered on.

2) Try another USB cable.

3) Download and install the latest Vista driver for the printer from Lexmark.

Make certain that you follow the instructions for the printer driver install - usually for a USB printer, you install the driver, then, connect and power on the printer.

Solve : Video Card res help?

Answer»

I am looking at a Video Card and it SAY??

MAXIMUM Analog Resolution 2048 x 1536 @ 85 Hz

I get that 2048 x 1536 is the Width and Hight RES.
But what is the @ 85 Hz???

They are not talking about the CRT FREQ. are they? Because most CRTs and TVs are 60 Hz or is this not what they mean?85hz is the refresh rate of your video card. If your MONITOR can only handle 60hz, then I'm assuming the card will default to that. Most LCD flat panel monitors nowadays feature 85hz refresh rates, to my knowledge.a lot of CRTs can go up to 120hz for lower resolutions, as well.It means that the card can support that resolution and that refresh rate or lower, but, cannot support that resolution at a refresh rate higher than 85 hz.

Also, the card (more than likely) can support lower resolutions at a higher refresh rate.

Solve : Harddrive issue on new computer??

Answer»

My brother purchased a computer from www.cyberpowerpc.com and just received it yesterday. He ORDERED it without an OS to SAVE some money. I was helping him set it up as he is not very knowledgeable in regards to computers. After removing the computer from the box, I connected the power cable, keyboard, mouse, and the monitor, and then powered it on. After it cycled through power-up, I received a message stating something along the lines of "boot error" and to insert the system disc and press enter. I first tried inserting my Windows XP disc and after it went through the initial system scans, it showed the message "starting Windows", at which point the screen went blue and displayed the following message:

STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error\Systemroot\System32\ntdll.dll

I powered the computer off and tried again, and received the same message. I also tried installing the motherboard driver install cd instead of windows, and I still got a boot error message. Any suggestions? Could the hard drive be bad?If you can go into bios and set the bios to start in best known confog. ordefault 7 re boot with OS disc in cdrom drive. is your hard drive recognised in the bios? Also change the boot order in the bios to boot from the cdrom drive .First, you can't "install" motherboard drivers until there is an operating system.

To the problem at hand - the error means that there is a problem reading the CD or writing the info to the hard drive. I would approach it as follows:

1) Make certain that you have the BIOS set to boot from CD.

2) Thoroughly inspect the install CD for scratches, SMUDGES, etc.; clean the CD; try the CD in another system.

Turn off and unplug the computer; GROUND yourself before touching anything inside the computer case.

3) Remove and re-plug in the power and data cables for the CD and hard drive.

4) CHECK all other motherboard connections; something could have come loose in transit.

Solve : Restoring Partition?

Answer»

Hello all,

Having a bit of an issue.. I was replacing a harddrive on a HP desktop to START with a fresh OS load. Never thought to disconnect the USB drive that connected. Well it turned out the harddrive I put in the computer was BAD.. So when I FIRED up the HP restore it chose the USB drive to use.
It was starting to format the drive when I realized what was going on. It had to be a few seconds into the format that I unplugged the drive. Well long story short the USB drive doesn't read. I have used countless programs to try and recover it. It's mainly music on the drive and I did recover it but all the files have been renamed to generic numbers. The last program I used was testdisk to try and recovery/create a new partition so I can access the drive to copy the files over. But that did not work too well. Instead of the drive saying 'not formatted. Format now?', it's opens to a blank drive.

Any ideas? All that is needed is the music. Just want to copy it over and format the USB drive.

Thanks for the help,

SteveHave you TRIED recuva?

Solve : DIY a KM switch?

Answer»

Hello to all.
I am curious to what LENGTHS i have to go to to create a small three way KM (keyboard and mouse) switch for my small workstation??

I just need to free up desk space from the area three keyboards and mice take up, and hopefully find a way to accomplish this task without PROGRAMING a chip or creating a whole dedicated PCB (Not quite sure if this is even the right site to ask about this)

I am willing for soldering, as to be assumed by the nature of the project. and i understand that the absence of a PCB will mean that i will have a minor birds nest of WIRES once it is done, and thank god i am not trying for video switching.
I do have one of those nifty usb tools that provide four ports from one i could scrap for this. (i will assume this is called a usb hub)

My basic idea is to have my keyboard and mouse plugged into the usb hub and switch that, in basics, yes?? because i am not worried about the computers thinking there is no keyboard at boot or which not.
Plus doing this would also allow me to plug in a bar code scanner into a third port of the usb hub, and possibly ANOTHER usb input device

My only worry is the delay that might take place in the computer realizing the new hardware is in place before being able to use it (even though it is only like, a single second)

If anyone knows anything about how i can do this, please let me know, even if it is a link to another site, or FORUM. Thanks. And i am always willing to learn something new about electronics. http://www.arune.se/electronic:kmswitch

Solve : New cpu same as the old cpu?

Answer»

My current computer was made by a friend 10 years ago with an upgrade 5 years ago. Lately it has been freezing every once and awhile so I turn it off then try to restart it again later and it works fine. My question is that I am going to get a new computer, perhaps PUT one together but I really like the settings of my current computer. Is there a way to just transfer all the data, or when I get a new cpu can it run the same as my old cpu. I guess what im asking is if it possible to buy a new computer and give it a brain transfer from my old pc and how does one go about doing that?Just to clarify, a CPU is the Central Processing Chip inside your computer tower...

No you won't be able to take your current boot hard drive, drop it into another new computer(or clone your current hard drive to the hard drive in your new computer) and just expect it to work without issues.
As this member of this forum puts it: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/265343-32-hard-drive-crashes-restarts-computer
Quote

Look at it this way, your old hard drive had drivers and such unique for your old motherboard, graphics, sound, ETC. when you moved it to a "new" machine, all that was wrong and when WINDOWS tried to start, it couldn't find the hardware that it was expecting, and therefore you got the BSOD.
Even if it miraculously worked I expect you would have to reactivate your Windows installation...Thank you for the information Transfusion. Since I can not just put my current hard drive in a new computer what advice would you give me to have my new computer as close to my old computer as possible?http://lifehacker.com/5820744/how-to-migrate-your-data-from-an-old-computer-to-a-new-one

It seems like Windows Easy Transfer is the way to go.
As for all your existing paid program installations... I guess the only way is to either switch to free open-source alternatives or to contact the developers/customer service to see if they can provide an exception for you...change the HDD or use it as an external oneQuote from: computer 12 on March 26, 2012, 07:45:03 AM
change the HDD or use it as an external one
Please feel free to ignore this "advice"The best SOLUTION would be to backup your files off of the old hard drive, and transfer them to the new computer once everything is installed and working. the CPU is just how many calculations per second a computer can process, so a different one would just make your computer faster or slower, not change what is programmed into it. All computer information is kept on the hard drive.

If your computer is 10 years old, chances are your hard drive is lacking in SPACE, or could be getting worn out after being used for so long. I would suggest a new hard drive so you have more space and something more reliable. You can use the old hard drive internally as a backup storage if you wanted to.

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to use your old hard drive as a secondary drive to your new computer, and if you can get into Windows on your new drive, you will be able to keep the files on the old one and pull them off to your new hard drive as needed. I would still backup the files just in case though.

Solve : Is F/F slowing my computer or something else??

Answer»

Hi and thanks for reading my thread.

I have been recently having a more and more slow computer. By slow I mean in response to clicking, such as: the computer hangs for some seconds before any indication of data transfer. eg click on a link/instruction to open or go to a webpage etc, computer hangs for a time then the fan speeds up and off it goes. When it gets there ( lets say a webpage), the computer hangs again the little BLUE indicator in the corner (FireFox Browser) hangs, then decides it wants to get some data, and delivers the page.

Not only though in the Firefox browser. Say I want to open a word document, same thing. Click to open MSword, the computer hangs for a couple of seconds, then opens the program. The program get the outline (blank in the centre) and fills in after a couple of seconds. (Sorry if this sounds silly but I dont know how else to explain it).

Other times when I am not using the computer, but it is on, I can hear the fan grinding away as if trying to cool something really hot.
When this fan grinding occurs, if I go to task manager, I find the CPU is maxed out at 100%??
So now I'm thinking its more of a memory problem? I just cant work it out.

Now, there are a couple of things that have changed in recent times. Nothing on the side of the computer however, that has been the same for years. No memory upgrades, hard drive changes, CD player is the same... everything is the same.

I changed internet provider, but I dont see how that can effect the computer.
Other than that I updated Firefox, via their general update downloads. (This is F/F 3.6.27)

I run anti-Malware programs regularly, I have AVG and Microsoft Essentials and run them, also SUPERAntiSpyware.

Also I have CLEANED out the dust inside the case on a regular basis.

I have some thermal paste in a syringe and am thinking of refreshing the chip surface.

Can someone please offer any other solutions or methods, to determine the source of my problem.

Thank you ImnoGuru. It is not a hardware issue that can be cured with just good maintenance.

If you mean MSE and AVG installed and running at the same time, this is where you should start first. Two antivirus running would cause you a slow to a crawl problems.

Geek-9pm and Raptor, this operating system is Xp Pro 2002, SP3. The CPU is Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz and 1.5 gig of RAM. I have a newish Western Digital 500 Gig hard drive connected with a Sata cable. The drive is about 2 years old.
I cannot think of what type of "Background tasks" you can be referring to, mainly as this computer doesnt do a great deal anymore. I use it (currently) for ebay searches and the TV guide. The kids use it for facebook sometimes but not often.

Thanks soybean. I dont know if I can take a copy of the box with processes running so I copied them over and these are the highest consumers;
Firefox.exe is wildly high at 322,372K and currently @ 330,608K, plugin-container.exe @26,266k, SvHost is 42,200k, AVGWDSVC.EXE is 15,988k MSMpEng.exe is 48,185K, Sysytem running @ 10,560K and sysytem idle is 00 K. Most of the rest of the other processes are below 10,00K.

The Task manager performance screen shows the CPU running @ 100% and there is a red line on the graph that shows another range of performance in the overlay ( I dont know what this is) that is running variously between 80% but below 90% then drops momentarily to 60% and straight up again.
It was something that I changed in the options section of Task Manager.

Well spotted, there's your problem right there.

Thank you both jason2074 and reddevilggg, I can see where you are coming from with this too and I agree that it might be a cause.
I had some previous problem with MS Essentials that is now fixed.

I havent noticed any problem during the past with both of these running at the same time, so I will disable AVG or uninstall it first to see if that brings any joy.

Again thanks for the input everyone, I will follow these suggestions remove AVG and see if I can get a HDD diagnostic. I had a program once that showed the different type files and directories .... Ah I remember its called WinDirStat, is that of any use to us ?

The only new additions to my programs list is; DivX Plus. Not that I have used it yet for anything I think it was just an update addition with an IE update.... I dont use IE at all actually, I hate it. (with a passion). (Just an info comment there.)
Hi its been a while and I have tried a couple of things to reduce the difficulties with this computer. I cleaned out all the dust internally (not that there was much. I keep my computers pretty clean actually.), reseated the ram and did a few scans with updated antivirus programs.
I removed the fan and checked operation, gave it a bit of a lube job in the bearing and reseated the chip.

Now with all of that, the best results seem to have been the virus scans.

The computer has certainly not raced away to 100% use of the CPU as before. ( probably a product of the virus scans) The scans only responded to 1 (what it called ) a virus.

The fan has definitely reduced in noise, although I'm not sure that was a product of the oiling or the scans.

Using speed fan as suggested and going through some of the features in the tabs, "INFO". "DIMM Info". "Read info." .. the readings for DIMM#0,1,2,3 show 2 @ 512 & 2 @ 256.

patio, I havent been able to locate this drive diagnostics that you replied about. Can you make a new suggestion for a HDD diagnostics feature that I can use please?

The good news in all this is, that the computer no longer is using 100% of the CPU and is now at a very satisfying 1 - 3% and up 23% during use, even with several windows open and the temperature has dropped to 84 degrees F.

The bad news is that the curser is still lagging as is the computers response to everything. & by everything I mean everything. Opening a program sometimes gives me a white box where the screen is loading the program... then it catches up and the blinking curser takes several seconds to appear.

This occurs during all sorts of operations, opening webpages , clicking on an article in a webpage opening office, moving through a document while in word, opening the start menu and trying to see a additional list that a program has and so on. Even typing this reply the curser doesn't keep up with my ridiculously slow typing pace.

I am TOLD that memory issues are most likely to be the cause of the lag in the computer.

Could maybe the memory modules be causing this problem or should I be looking at the chip?

Thank you to all with your suggestions. ImnoGuru Quote

Why not use SeaTools ?

MHDD also works good for detecting bad sectors. Google how to run a scan with it. It will also erase what are called "software bad sectors" which are sectors on the drive that have been marked by the drives error correction as bad. Sometimes sectors can be marked bad due to drive overheating, or power issues... But this erases data on the drive so back up first.

It may serve well to try a Live Puppy Linux CD to help isolate the issue. Your computer may still be infected.

I wouldn't install an AV with all features enabled on a single core processor. But that's just me..

As always suggested, make sure you have complete back-up of all important files. In any case the hard drive is suspected being faulty. While downloading the hard drive diagnostic, you can use also the Windows error checking tool. Post the result and any unrecoverable boot sector could mean a hard drive is inevitably going south anytime. If you are having online and offline lagging problem, check the hard drive status first.

Solve : Dell no boot?

Answer»

Well that was a BIT of fun. I think I worked out why it shut down on me, as it did it again while gathering this information. Just before it shut down, I heard a faint vibration sound. It might be a heat sink overheating, and then the system shuts down. (New Problem)maybe existing but undiscovered.
So this is what the bios tells me.

and on reboot it told me it was a thermal event that caused the shut down

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Progress. Ive saved the changes and the DELL has given me this SCREEN

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Ok the temp issue has been improved (so far), I added an EXTERNAL home fan.

Solve : HD3650??

Answer»

What PSU wattage does the HD3650 require? Sapphire says 300W minimum and Diamond says otherwise on its site. How about the iceQ turbo HIS version? Should I get the GDDR3 version?

-----------

I have a 8500GT right now that my dad gave me a long while ago and it runs fine. I see that HD3650 gives better performance compared to 8500GT and if that's the case, I'll go buy it. 8600GT and higher cards require a PSU higher than 300W and I don't want to buy a new PSU now, regardless of how cheap it is.

-----------

Age of Empires, NBA Live08, Company of Heroes are games I play and the higher end geforce cards are more expensive than I'm willing to spend and I care about playing at high resolution because I have a 22 inch monitor. See below for rest of COMPUTER specs. Thanks!

PSU Calculatorthe PSU calculator said I should be ok. It's an estimate, but given Sapphire's site says 300W PSU required, and I trust Compaq to have given me a quality 300W PSU, I can go on. I know I probably should get a higher watt PSU, I would like to get the card first.

Now, my question is.... is the HD3650 a DECENT card? (doesn't have to be best card) or should I stick to upgrading with NVidia cards as nVidia cards now have physX capabilities? And is it worth the extra $$ to get the IceQ that HIS uses on some of its cards?I would invest in a new PSU ( 500W or better ) for the future upgrades and start saving up for an 8800GTS Vid card...

But that's just me...8800GTS is a nice card but I feel it uses up QUITE a lot of power, especially when playing video games, although I'm not playing games with high recommended min requirements and I don't play every day for a lot of hours like some of the other guys do. HD3650 seems to be the the DDR3 version of 8500GT (without any overclocking and more stream processors). But I'd miss out on physX capabilities which Age of Empires can use.

I just want respectable performance without having a electricity guzzler in my computer, EVEN when I am not playing video games

I have an AMD64 athlon single core processor and I READ that higher end graphics card not good with single core processors because single core processors not fast enough to keep up with the speed of the graphics card.

Also, I have a Compaq SR1630NX computer that I upgraded as you see my sig info and I am wondering if 8800GTS can fit into my computer comfortably, as people said it's pretty long!

Solve : Not booting Not beeping?

Answer»

My computer although a bit older was running fine till it was shaken a lot by a blow on the case.It restarted by itself, worked for a short time and frozen. Thereafter rebooting efforts went up to frozen screens only.Ultimately the machine refuses to boot-up.There is black screen only. There are no beeps at startup!-No that is not exact-Rarely there are 3 short beeps.Yes very rarely that 3 beeps only. The HDD is trying to start and ends with a clicking sound.Led in MOBO is lighting.CPU fan is working.I tried with a number of RAM STICKS but no better results. On checking the PSU output voltage it is seen that there is a +/- variation upto 8% .Could this be a culprit in this case? The Monitor also was checked and found OK.Applied thermal grease afresh. Is it of so much importance to apply a good quality thermal grease? (I suspect the quality of the thermal grease already applied)
What could be the problem?
Anybody could help me please?

The specs are:
Intel D845GVSR MOBO (on board graphics)
Intel P IV 2.8 Ghz
Ram 512 MB PC 333
USB mouse
PS2 keyboard

check all the connections first.Dis connect everything except leave 1 stick of ram, video, cpu with fan hooked up,monitor hooked to video.Turn on pc and see if you get a display? If you get no display you have a hardware PBLM. Do the fans spin when you turn on?yes ,the fan spins, HDD is trying to read and makes a clicking sound, CD Drive lED flashes for a while but nothing to the monitor. Each time I have to turn off the machine by pressing the power switch for a while. If that click is coming from the hard drive that drive is getting READY to fail...
DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...

This will tell you the health of the drive. But even with the HDD disconnected, monitor does't display anything. Is it necessary to have the HDD to enter the BIOS? I cant just view the BIOS either. How can I test if the on-board graphic CHIP is failed? Any suggestions?Yes, you should get BIOS first.

Actually, depending upon the SYSTEM, you'll get a short display for the video card and video RAM, and then the system will go through the Power On Self Test (POST) procedure before it attempts to boot an operating system.Try another monitor...
Is this onboard graphics or an add-on card ? ?

Sorry i just noticed you stated this was onboard...
Borrow a known working vid card from a friend and post the results...

Solve : d:\ is not accessible using 2 dvd/cd drives?

This is a different problem from the usual Roxio repair. I have two dvd/cd read writers. Sony DRU 810A and DRU 840A. One is a master on a single eide ribbon. The other is a slave on a second eide ribbon. Let's call them D: and E:. If I go the properties of D: and click and apply ENABLE CD recording on this drive, when closed it works properly, but E: will GIVE me an ERROR message if either a blank cd is inserted or the drive is empty. I can do the same to E: and then D; will give me the error. If a blank disk is in the drive it will say X:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function. If nothing is in the drive it will say Please insert a disk into drive X: It is not possible to get them to live in write mode at the same time. Is this a normal function of Windows or something in my setup? Nero will burn a disk in either position when asked, but if I want to drag files to the cd window to burn them on the fly, I can do it with only one of the drives at a time.
The system is W XPs3, 1 gig of ram. p4 processor. Not sure when this started, but it bugs me.You should chose which drive.to do whatever you want............

Solve : A specific question involving GPU core clock speeds?

Answer»

Hi all, long time and no see Good to be back.

I am looking at upgrading my graphics card and RAM. While doing research on ram I found out my Motherboard (Asus P5ND2-SLI Series) can only take up to DDR2-667mhz RAM speeds.

My question is this: Is there such a limit on the core clock speeds of a new graphics card? The card I am looking at is the Nividia Gforce 9600GT. There are two versions; one has a core clock speed of 650mhz and the other 720mhz. Here some links for more info:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=VGA&ProductID=2774&ProductName=GV-NX96T512H-B

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2785 (This is my prefered one and has a clock speed of 720)

The pricing is similar and from what I can tell the only major difference is the clock speed, so I want to know if my motherboad will take it.

My Power supply is 420W so I dont think there is a problem there, and I am running a pentium 4 single core 3Ghz processor. My current card is a Geforce 6600GT so I'm hoping for a big difference in the cards.

Thanks in advance for your advice

Razor
There's no limit on the graphics card clock speeds, no.
You'll also notice a good performance increase from that card - I would say your next upgrade, if your motherboard can take it, should be the CPU.
Hope this helps.Thank you very MUCH Calum, thats a great help, and relief.

Speaking about the CPU, my mother board will take up to a Duel core, but I can only find up to a 2.4 Ghz Duel core in our shops. Would this speed duel core be any faster than a single core 3Ghz?

RazorIt all depends on the actual models of the CPUs you are looking at.
What CPUs will your board actually take?
We can recommend one from there if you like. Thanks Calum

I can understand some of this jargon but I still can't tell exactaly what cpu my motherboard will take. It has been suggested to me that I upgrade my Graphics card and Ram as planned then wait a bit and upgrade my motherboard and get a really good CPU rather than being limited to lesser CPU's.

What do you think? From some Google searching, I'd recommend you wait and upgrade your board and CPU at the same time, that board won't take newer CPUs.Ok, thanks heaps Calum, I will do that.

Thanks once again for your advice, it has been most helpful.

Solve : help me to get my answer...!!!!?

Answer»

guys may this question of mine be a bit weird or a out of scope query but do help in getting it's answer......

we hear a lot about microprocessors that instructions are execi=uted by a micorprocessor.....and these instruction codes are written in assembly language.....now if a assembly compiler converts an instruction code into a machine code as that of 1010001 format....then how this format gets executed into a desired action required by a programmer or a user.....because microprocessor being a digital device...works on voltage proinciple...then how these numerical conventions get converted to this voltage level format...

eagerly waiting for a SATISFACTORY reply.....If you boil things down to basics - and just think of each transistor in a CPU - it will, like discrete transistors, have two basic switching states - on or off ... and so if you will - high or low. This equates to zeros and ones.

Expand this base level condition ''upwards'' ...... starting with bits and then bytes ... thus min 00000000 to max 11111111 = 0 to 255 is the range of one byte - the cumulative state of 8 transistors. For convenience take this to hex code to ''condense'' notations and the 11111111 be comes FF. From here will be a lower level stage where program code in its most basic form is equated to binary/hex values.

Pump up the programing code to higher levels and there will still be a route 'down' to that essential binary/hex condition at CPU transistor level.

Not totally sure if this is what you are asking but while the CPU is a voltage device - think more in terms of this 'switching' analogy at the base level ... of course voltage plays a part but most important is the on/off conditions of semi conductors. For the most part even these days - operations are sequential - in a serial manner ...... altho parallel computing is something we'd see as a goal in the future.Quote

Not to mention the quantum computers which are on the horizon...using multi-state qubits. Quote

not ttotally satisfied wid your reply mate........please do be more elaborate wid the above quoted statements......this question is killing me sincs day and night......Why should we do your homework for you?Quote from: nishant.nishu on August 16, 2008, 07:58:15 AM

Not satisfied at all with your attitude!

You yourself can't even write in English - you write gibberish like this

because microprocessor being a digital device...works on voltage proinciple...then how these numerical conventions get converted to this voltage level format

This suggests to me that you would not understand the answer anyway.

So PULL yer head in and STOP acting like a galah. And do your own homework. Read some books, think about what you have read, discuss with fellow students, learn some communication skills (including manners).

Well - sorry we didn't please you!! Not satisfied huh?!! - sheeshYes, Chris GAVE you a quite nicely done basic answer -- it was a good review for me to think about voltage state and on/off conditions.

The entire Internet and World Wide Web exist "behind" this forum. Start looking around.be more elaborate "wid"...
