Solve : slow shutdown?

Answer»

6. You have to enable system files viewing.
Try to disable modem.
Get fresh network card driver. Uninstall current driver. Install fresh one.Yes It was enabled. I could not find the file. I will try to disable and enable.I need to go to bed, so we'll play more tomorrow, but, if you have time try those other things.I'm not really quite a computer GENIUS. If it has to do with computers i'm quite LOSS. Can you give me more SPECIFIC instructions?Quote

One thing worth trying would be to reinstall network card driver.
Another thing is to disable modem, since you don't need it.UPHCLEAN (A Microsoft hotfix) used to fix a lot of these problems in pre-Vista MACHINES but it doesn't work with Vista.
Google for uphclean vista and you will get the idea, there is talk that something similar will be released for Vista in the future.
Is your Vista completely 100% up to date, it wouldn't hurt. The uphclean wont release TILL another 6 months, and vista is up to date 100%.I don't do Vista so it's time for me to bail out, W2K Rules
If Vista has an Event Viewer it may be of some help, thanks for the heads up on the 6 Months. Thanks anyway.....

Solve : PC Input on TV No Longer Working....?

Answer» HEY guys. I've been racking my brains on this and can't figure out what's going on.

I have an XP desktop on my wireless network in my LIVING room. From the desktop I run into a powered VGA splitter so that I can send a VGA signal to my Sony 40" tv as well as a 17" monitor I have on the living room wall. I use the TV for internet browsing and such and then when I WANT to watch TV I simply change the input on my TV. The smaller monitor is still on and will display my photo screensaver after a few minutes. This setup has worked fine since March but all of a sudden it went kaput.

OK, so my smaller monitor still shows the computer display but my TV now says "No PC input" on the PC input setting. for the record I have not changed any settings on anything, it all of a sudden stopped working. All of the cables and such are brand new, having been purchased since March.

So here's a rundown of what I've done......

VGA out of computer to splitter then VGA cables running to tv and smaller monitor---------Only smaller monitor works.

Switching the VGA cables for smaller monitor and TV -------- Only smaller monitor works.

Going straight from computer to TV with 2 seperate VGA cables------ No picture on TV with either cable

Going straight from a DIFFERENT computer VGA out to TV ------- FINALLY a picture on TV.

What gives? Everything worked fine since March until a few days ago. That's when the PC input on the TV itself would display the blank "no pc input" screen but would flicker the computer display occassionally. Even while this was happening the display on the smaller monitor was not affected at all.

Then last night and this morning everything was back to normal but now it's back to not working at all. I don't even get the flicker of the computer display on the TV anymore.

I've tried different cables, I've made sure the cables are inserted tightly and I've changed resolutions. Any ideas?Video card...Check with the store you bought from..Can it really be the video card if the SMALL monitor still works?

Solve : Video Card Problems (No Signal)?

Answer»

I posted earlier about this but I feel the description of my problem was sub-par. So I'll give it ANOTHER GO. A few weeks ago, I turned on my computer, which started up fine, but the monitor wasn't receiving a signal (I got the "No Signal" message on the SCREEN, and then the monitor went to sleep). So, I unplugged the DVI cable from the computer, and I unplugged the power to the monitor, waited a few minutes, plugged everything back in, and it worked fine.

About a week ago, it did the exact same thing again, except this time, unplugging the cables did nothing. I took out the video card (GeForce 7500LE), blew the dust out of the fan, and reseated it. Still, same problem. To make sure the computer was working fine, I used the TV-Out port (on the motherboard) and connected the computer to the TV. Everything looked fine, it booted into Windows XP and everything.

So, I suspected the card was shot. I bought a new e-GeForce 8600GT (EVGA) and POPPED it in. Still, same issue, no signal to the monitor. I made sure I deleted all the old drivers before trying to install the new ones, but still nothing. Windows even recognized that new hardware was installed, so I don't think the PCI-E port is busted. I reseated the RAM, I reset the CMOS, everything. After messing with it, Windows started acting funny, and I was desperate, so I backed everything up, wiped the hard drive and reinstalled windows. Neither video card works, even with the new windows install.

I'm at a loss for how to fix this. I don't have onboard video on the motherboard (unless that S-Video TV-out port counts) and I didn't see any option in BIOS to disable it. I don't get any system BEEPS at post. It's a 32bit machine.

I should also mention that I tried the monitor on a different machine, and it works fine. I also tried a different monitor on the broken machine, and it did the same thing.

Any help would be ENORMOUSLY appreciated. So you're currently using Windows XP with your TV?

What I would do first is go to Device Manager and look for any Yellow Exclamation Marks or Question Marks.Did you try a different Dvi cable. You mentioned you were able to get it going again at first, by unplugging and then replugging this cable in. This could point to the cable been faulty.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 11, 2008, 07:33:40 AM

What I would do first is go to Device Manager and look for any Yellow Exclamation Marks or Question Marks.

I went into the Device Manager before I uninstalled Windows, and there was a Yellow Question mark next to an unidentified Display Adapter. I let Windows look for drivers (this is when the old card was installed) and it found drivers for a GeForce 6500LE (which I assume are the latest available drivers for the 7500). I even tried to download the newest drivers from the nVidia website. Long story short, the exclamation point went away, but that didn't fix anything.

Just a quick clarification: SHOULD the video card have worked right away, without having to install drivers?

I used the same cable with a VGA adapter and tested it with my laptop and it worked fine, so I don't believe it's the cable.Quote

From my experience, sometimes.

I would go to the Video Card Manufacturers website and re-download and re-install the drivers. There is a chance that both these cards are faulty, can you try these cards in another computer? Can you also test another cable so we can rule that out.

Solve : format large HD in FAT32?

Answer»

I need to format a 500GB external HD in FAT32. I tried using Disk Management (XP) but cannot create a partition larger than 32GB. I used the cmd line to format drive but after APPEARING to be working for over 2 hours I got a message that the drive was too big. How can I get this drive formatted. I need to move files between a Mac and a PC.Have a read of this...and this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463

FTA: "You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size using the FAT32 file SYSTEM during the Windows XP installation process. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 VOLUMES larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool during Setup. If you need to format a volume that is larger than 32 GB, use the NTFS file system to format it. Another option is to start from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk and use the Format tool included on the disk."

Best of luck.

Btw, how many bytes are you looking at? Is an online storage/transfer site an option?

It might be helpful to know the "exact" command you used to format and the "exact" error message you received.

That being said, I've never formatted a 500 GB hard drive as FAT32. I did come across this link, which may be what you've already tried:
Format Large Disks to FAT32 on Windows XP and Vista

Any reason you can't partition the 500 GB drive into smaller logical units.

If you use a Windows 98 or Windows ME Startup Disk you may encounter a disk size limit of 127 GB as they do not provide native support for 48-bit Logical Block Address (LBA). (Not sure about this... but SOUNDS about right).

Solve : Problems after installing new RAM?

Answer»

just swapped the module configuration from my last post and I'm still getting a boot. This is the exact configuration that was giving me alarms about a half hour ago. Nothing has changed, pretty weird. How about 1 module of new RAM?Yep that was next... new_1 failed to boot and the alarms SOUNDED again.

I replaced it with new_2 and that has booted successfully.

I'll try new_1 and new_2 together just for kicks and then I'll START running memtest86 on new_1 like you suggested.OK so weirdly enough the computer boots up with new_1 and new_2 together. And doesn't boot with all MODULES in together. Leave new_1 and new_2 in and run memtest86 for at least 4 hours.

EDIT: I'm done for the night - good luck. OK last report, put both new_1 and new_2 in separately and this time they both booted with no problems. I just memtest it I guess and see whats up.

good night. I've just finished memtest after running the thing for 10 hours on the two new modules. It reported no errors in that time.

My computer is currently booted up with both the new modules inserted but I suspect that I will have the same problems that I had at the start of the thread. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. That's a good result from memtest86. Based on that result, I would not expect a memory problem from the new RAM. I would, however, expect that you will have problems if you add the old RAM.

May be time to stick the old memory into a drawer and enjoy the doubling of memory

My experience with XP in going from 1 GB to 2 GB was that I couldn't really notice any difference on day to day stuff. So, I would really question the incremental benefit of adding the old RAM to make 3 GB.

Do you notice any performance difference?

Let us know how the new RAM runs. So I'm back to the old problems anyway!

I left the new RAM in after memtest and it worked fine for 3 reboots before the same problem I described in my OP occurred again. I took the modules out and re-inserted them but it made no difference.

So I've given up on them and reverted back to the computers origional 2x 512mB configuration.

I'm all out of ideas again and looking for help please!!?After new_1 failed to boot, I was surprised: a) that it worked with new_2 and b) that the combination 'passed' memtest86. (Interesting aside on memtest86, memory never really 'passes' completely because memtest86 can't test all possible memory combinations; so, a 'pass' is a probabilistic pass; but, a fail is a Fail!)

Anyway, I would RMA the RAM to Corsair. I think that you bought a matched set so return both modules. But, check with Corsair - simply tell them the system would not boot or run with the RAM. Get the RMA number and instructions before sending the RAM back.

Another thing to consider - I know that you originally contemplated having 3 GB of RAM (old + new). If that is still what you want, please purchase additional new RAM.

Please let us know how you make out.

I know what it's like.....but it would be more REAL if you had a projector as a screen. I feel you there, but hooking your computer up to a HD tv does the same thing. With a projector, you can move it back enough to make it seem real-size.OK ok ok you win, they are pretty good as long as you have a good one without the pixel dilution.

Solve : No Signal Video Card Problem?

Answer»

I'm having a ton of trouble with my video card(s). One day, my computer is working fine. The next day, I turn it on and everything starts up but there is no signal to the monitor. I tried a different monitor (and different cables) and still have the same issue. I have tested the monitors and cables on a different computer and they work fine.

I took it to the IT guy where I work and he checked the video card (which is an nVidia GeForce 7500LE). He recommended using some compressed air to clear it out, and if that didn't work, the card was probably dead. I tried the compressed air and still had the same issue.

I ordered a replacement card (an EVGA e-GeForce 8600GT) and am still having the same issue. I've tried every possible combination of driver installation/uninstallation. I'm running Windows XP. I know the computer is running fine, because the Motherboard has a TV out connection that still works and that is how I'm able to do driver installs and such. But no luck out of any video card.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm about to go unplug the RAM and run it one stick at a time to see if that helps. Otherwise I'm lost.

Thanks.Does that card have a ribbon to the tv out from the card? I would say {guessing} you have a bad card. Can you get hold of a pci card for testing purpose?Just to clarify, which card are you guessing is bad? The old card, nor the new card, has a ribbon that connects to the TV out. From the info you've gathered, are you guessing the new card is also faulty?Normally when you get no signal to monitor the problem lies at the v card ,power supply, or board. When you turn on PC can you get into BIOS?Are you getting any beeps?I can do everything with the PC (BIOS, OS setup, safe mode, etc) as LONG as it is connected to the TV via the TV out port on the motherboard itself. I don't get any beeps at post, and everything boots properly. If I take the new card our and reseat it, it will recognize that new hardware is installed, but when I install the drivers, nothing changes. I was under the assumption that the new v card would work right out of the box, whether or not the DRIVES were installed. Like I said, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers both with the card installed and with it out, but nothing seems to work. And the computer acts like nothing is out of the ordinary. I'm getting ready to shove the thing out a window.Have you tried dis connecting the ribbon? Its all pointing to the cardI'm not entirely sure which ribbon you are referring to. On the old card, there was a ribbon that connected the VGA port to the card itself. However, I wasn't using this port, I was using the DVI port. On the new card, there is no VGA port, and both DVI PORTS are soldered directly to the PCB.

As an update, I reinstalled windows. Nothing changed, the only way I can see what's going on is still through the S-Video TV-OUT port on the motherboard. Hi. I am having the same problem for 2 years almost, with my video card. And I've been browsing internet, searching forums for solutions, nothing found. Solve : What do I need to buy to be able to use 2 laptops wirelessly in my house??

Answer»

We have a desktop with a DSL hook-up in our family room in the basement. My college STUDENT children want to be able to access the web on their laptops while in their rooms. What do I need to buy? Their laptops have wireless capabilites.A GOOD guide to read before you start setting up your wireless network: Setting Up a Home Network

All the information you'll need before you go out and start purchasing what you need.thanks you for replyYou're welcome...We've got a pc in the dining room wired to a wireless router (fancy name for a wireless modem). Our 2 laptops can access the internet anywhere in the HOUSE as long as the router is switched on. The pc does not need to be on. If all 3 COMPUTERS are on together, they can talk to each other in different rooms. We have just 1 internet account (AOL). Any computer store will sell a router. All recent laptops have wireless capability - refer to the instructions which COME with them. You have to set up a network (we call ours "Amsterdam") and the instructions should tell you how to connect your computers to the network. So all you need to buy is a wireless router.

Solve : Cooling CPU?

Answer»

What else can I do to COOL down the CPU?
I have a new heat sink and fan installed, but the CPU temperature is still quite high (~80 deg C) when three or more applications are running.
If only one or two applications are running, it's ok (~60 deg C).

Thanks. What operating system and what are the system specs, particularly, what cpu?How many fans do you have and where are they blowing?Did you apply the thermal paste. I know it sounds like a dumb question. Check how you installed you fans. Mite not be ventilating correctly. It's ASUS P5LD2 with P4 775 3.0 Ghz.

Yes, I've put the thermal paste.

I have three fans in total:
1. CPU fan - blowing sidewards
2. Side chasis fan - blowing sidewards
3. Rear chasis fan - blowing backwards

All three fans are new and blowing well.
No blocking near fans.
Are they blowing into the machine or out?Blowing out i.e. sucking air out from the casing, isn't that should be it?Quote from: Michael on August 25, 2008, 10:45:41 AM

Blowing out i.e. sucking air out from the casing, isn't that should be it?

The one at the front should blow in. The one at the back should blow out. The power supply fan will blow out as well.

Can you use an application (or quickly jump into the BIOS) to determine the temperature of the system? You said the CPU is 80 C, what is the system? If the system is 50 C or less, then the problem is your cpu heat sink. Its probably not making good contact with the CPU. The socket 775 sinks are really hard to install. You have to make sure the little plastic tab is turned in the right direction (opposite the indicator arrow) which I believe is clock wise and then PUSH the heat sink down until the plastic tab is in the motherboard. Then you can press the tab and click it into the motherboard. When you are done, you'll know its right if the motherboard warps a bit (don't get me started about how bad that is, its intel's design after all).

The nice thing about intel processors is you can't kill them with heat, but they will throttle themselves to prevent over heating so they won't run very well without the heat sink installed properly.

Good luck, and take your time.

You mean the one at the side (below the display card) should blow in?
As for the CPU fan, according to the spinning direction, I suspect it's actually blowing down, but I do feel wind above (and around) the heat sink.

What you mean by what system? You mean the utility I use to determine the temperature?
I use PC Probe II for the Asus board, and the temperature reading is the same as the one shown in BIOS's hardware monitor.

Solve : No screen on monitor?

Answer»

I attempted to increase memory MB by installing a LARGER MB of memory. Unknowingly I reversed the memory and was trying to install it backwards. Not realizing one end was not locked in I turned the computer. No screen on the monitor was the result. After inspecting it and realizing what I had done I reversed the memory and STILL nothing. I then reinstalled the original memory and still no screen. Please tell me what I might have done. I didn't use any real force when I INSTALLED the memory in backwards and visually checked the memory slots for damage. I couldn't see any damage in the slots or the memory.try disconnecting power to your PC and popping out the BIOS battery. leave it out for about 5min then pop it back in and reboot. try this first with the original RAM that you had in it. if it boots successfully, pop out the old RAM and install the new RAM and reboot again.I removed the BIOS battery for 5 minutes as you suggested and replaced the original memory, and still no screen.
I will purchase a new battery and some new memory today, then let you know the results. Thank You for your assistance.Sounds like to me you might want to pick up a motherboard while you're out battery shopping.Quote from: jamesj2001 on August 22, 2008, 08:47:38 AM

Solve : Processor upgrade on Dell XPS M1530??

Answer» HELLO, I'm trying to find out whether or not it is possible to upgrade the processor on a Dell XPS M1530. My current processor is an Intel Core DUO 2 2GHZ. If it is possible, where would I be able to purchase a better processer and where could I have it installed?

Thanks so much!processor compatibillity depends on two things:
1) socket type
2) compatability with CHIPSET.

It's certainly possible, you can purchase them from almost any computer shop and they will PROBABLY fit it too.
Also you could buy one online and get the computer store to fit it for you.

FBTravel to Dell's site and enter your Service Tag # from the machine and it should tell you every component inside the machine...
This will give us a more educated idea of what exactly can be upgraded...

Either desktop computers might be enough for you if you're not too much into gaming but more looking for media work, second suggestion seems to be more of a gaming computer but that doesn't matter. Also, HP desktop I suggested lists 2.1GHz processor, but remember it's a triple core processor so I'm pretty sure it's enough for your processor requirements.Just might be worth browsing on techforless.com as well - in the ''scratch and dent'' section.

I got my HP4600 workstation that way and saved 53% on list price - and all that was wrong was a ding on CASE and a badly fitting side panel... it was guaranteed workable and proved to be just that.

You just might get more bang for your buck - never know.

Solve : Monitor blinks?

Answer»

HP a1616n

Purchased used, loaded with malware and other unwanted things ( been working on cleaning it up with the help of EvilFantasy on the virus thread ) Most problems seem to be fixed at this point in time except for this an occasional ( few second ) black out of the monitor.

The video card is an ATI radeon express 200 series. Driver update is 4/4/06
Can not seem to find an update for this card on the ATI website and when i do a search for one there seems to be several companies that want me to install something that will help me find all driver updates. ie: Driver Detective, Driver update pro, are these programs the way to find out if an update is available?

Can the blinking be something else?I strongly suggest you finish up with Evilfantasy in the Computer Virus and Spyware Section before we try to fix anything else.Pretty sure that we're done there...maybe i need to ask him. In fact i've been installing the MS updates.Did you try monitor with another computer?Quote from: Broni on August 18, 2008, 06:48:41 PM

Did you try monitor with another computer?

No. The only other computer that i have here is the laptop which does have a port for an external monitor so i suppose i could try that. But you REMINDED me that i have an Envision LCD monitor sitting in the corner in it's box being used as a table in my new digs that has at least a half dozen boxes being used as tables and desks while i my search at garage sales continues.

Will try the Envision to see if the blinking happens with that.Sounds like a plan For what it's worth:

The new monitor didn't blink but there was audio interference which isn't there with the HP.

i'm going to try a set of cheap speakers just to see if the sound crackle is in the computer or the HP monitor?

The HP hasn't been on enough since EF walked me through the clean->up and updating everything relative from MS. The computer runs very fast and very well now. Maybe i should IMAGE the drive?

Before i install any new programs i'll search around here in the data base for any thumbs up or thumbs down on the program and those things associated with it.

Has ANYONE used or is using the MagicJack phone device and software?
If you are i'd like to KNOW if it works even half as good as a "normal land line"?

It looks like the monitor is OK, then.
Does blinking occur in Safe Mode, as well?
Try to reinstall video driver. DISREGARD Windows saying, it's up to date.
If it doesn't help, remove video card, ENABLE on-board video, and see, if same thing happens.
We'll go from there.

Solve : Computer start up fault?

Answer»

I have been trying to sort my computer but cant seem to find the root problem. When I turn power on at mains computer start up before I push power on button. Only the fan COMES on. When holding on on off button nothing HAPPENS just the Hard drive light seems to show as on but not flashing.

I have trouble shooted the fault by opening the computer up and taken every thing off so it was just motherboard and fan and does the same does not seem to detect that the ram and hard drive is missing? I changed the power supply and doing the same? The only thing I have done is added ddr2 ram from another computer but noticed the ram pn the computer is ddr?

I have just tried to hold the power button on and it seems like it TRIES to start is not able to start up and the fan spins faster?

Any ideas what else could try?If possible, I would try a new power supply (PSU)Ok I have added an old power pack that was working on this computer but now has the same problem. I did take a power pack off my sisters computer which was working ok since then I added new power pack and added wrong ram which did not notice was wrong type until I switch on computer. If I hold the power on button down the computer seems to try start up which would make me think it was something to do with the power pack? Could the wrong type of ram had any effect? Or could it be the power pack is not as powerful as needed? Its more less the same one as the computer had when bought?Try re-seating the ram and try the RAM one at a time.

Also, perhaps you may need to change your CMOS Battery. (the battery on the motherboard)I'm having a little trouble understanding you, but it seems you tried to put ddr2 ram in a motherboard that takes ddr? If that's the case, it wouldn't have fit correctly and there's a good chance you may have shorted the motherboard.it is ddr2 ram that was added and it did fit for some reason which i thought was strange. it has the same 240 pins as the ddr. I will check the battery I thought it was strange that the ram fitted?

I think its strange that when I have the power on with nothing connected it is doing the same it seem power or motherboard problem?Did you put the regular DDR1 back in?yeah the normal ddr ram was put back as soon as noticed was wrong type. I have a feeling its something to do with the MOTHER board. Tested the power unit on another computer and ram all works. My test was to just add the power nothing else and does the same so could not rule out what was causing it. I still need to test the motherboard batery which I hope it is but will soon SEE if not then looks like it will be the mother board thats brokeWhat brand and wattage is the borrowed PSU ? ?
You still may be underpowered...the fact it runs in another rig proves very little.

hi i am having a problem with my computer, where when i turn the computer on pressing the POWER button, I hear continuous beeping noises and i have no display on the monitor. However my yellow indicator loading light on the CPU is flashing ... i have an on board nvidia video card on the computer and also bought another nvidia card and attached it to the pci slot... and had been using the pci slot video card for an year, and now there is no display ... i searched this topic up on google and it said to unplug the ram and replug it ... I tried it, and same problem ... then i took the pci video card out and connected the monitor to the onboard video card and i had display ... so what should i do to make the pci video card work again do i have to reinstall the software or something ... plz help sounds like a bad card. did you try the card in another pci slot?Have you gone into bios and DISABLED your on board and try re installing the pci card?sounds like a bad card. did you try the card in another pci slot?Have you gone into bios and disabled your on board and try re installing the pci card?

ok so i have tried unisntalling the onbaord and reinstaling the pci card ... the way i did this was ... i uninstalled the onboard by going to computer manage/device setup/ select my onbaord video card and unistall/ then when i put my video card into PCI slot i styll got the beeping sound which last for about 30 sec or more... so as of now reinstalled my onboard card ... what i wanna knw now is ... is it the video card thats bad or the PCI slot ... and is there a test i can do to see if my PCI slot is working properly???Quote

did you try the card in another pci slot?
Did you install video card a year ago, because you had some PROBLEMS with on-board video?no sry i havnt tried the video card in another pci ... dont have access to another pc right now... buh i will find some way to do this asap... and no my onbaord video card was working fine the reason installed the new card was because of an upgrade u can SAY ... from 128 card to 256...one more thing i had vista before and i intalled xp a month ago could that have cause the problem? :SIf you're not even seeing the POST screen, software is not your problem. You either have a bad card or a bad slot. You NEED to either try that card in another slot or another card in that slot to determine which it is.

Solve : Computer freezes up periodically?

Answer»

Hi, I just built two new identical computers. One of them is freezing up for a few seconds every minute or so and I cant figure out why.

Both are TOP of the line, core2extremes, 4870 cards, 8gigs ram, p5e asus boards etc.

At first I assumed it was a memory or heating issue, but I have tested all of the memory, vid cards and every other piece of hardware in the box that isnt freezing up. I also checked the temps and all are much COOLER than they even need to be. I reinstalled os and still no luck.

I hate to ASSUME that the problem is in either the board or chip but it seems thats all thats left. Please help!::)Hi, I just built two new identical computers
....................................... ....................................... ........
Anyway........what h/ds.......what software is used...I guess I should have been more specific. Here is a more detailed listing of the parts and such:

HIS Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5
ASUS P5E X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Vista 64 Ultimate

hmm other stuff:
updated drivers for everything, i think gpu driver version is 8.501
everything is brand new

GPU temp = 45 C
CPU temp = 20 C
MB temp = 38 C

Problem:

On one of the boxes the entire system freezes up for a few seconds (between 2-5sec) every minute or so, sometimes more frequently. It happens everywhere in windows. Sometimes it takes a few MINUTES for the first freeze up to happen although it varies but once it starts it doesnt stop. It only happens on the one box and I have tried switching every piece of hardware that isnt the chip, board or drive and still the problem persists.So.....since you have two identical computers.....what's different about them?
(software, hardware, downloads, ect...)

When did the problem start?

Also, you may want to test to see if this happens in Safe Mode.Quote

So.....since you have two identical computers.....what's different about them?

There is absolutely nothing different between the two hardware or software. They have exactly the same parts as well as software. Nothing has been DOWNLOADED other than drivers for all of the hardware and updates for vista and norton.

The problem has been there since I initially built the computers.

Also, you may want to test to see if this happens in Safe Mode.

I have not tried this yet, will do that shortly.Try swapping the PSU's....
Next i would do the same with the CPU's.

Those would be my first 2 suspects...

Do u mean the CD that come with the new hdd?
How can i do that explain more pls.

I have win 2000 Boot to the CD.
Read the Help File on "cloning the old HDD to the new one.

After successfully doing this power down the machine.
Then temporarily remove the old drive and set the new drive to Master.
Boot it up a few times to make sure everything runs.
You can then hook up the old drive as a slave and use it for additional storage.

Solve : Computer turns off without warning, and more...?

How are the temperatures?

Download Speed Fan.
When you install it, run it and post the temperatures it shows.heres info it gave me:
Fan is running at: 2557 RPM
Temp1: 36c
temp2: 52c
HD0:38c
They aren't that bad.

I suggest putting an external house fan and face it at the computer.
See if that lowers the temperatures down and KEEPS the computer on longer.alright
what would normal, computer temperatures be?
My Laptop idles at around 50*C.

Your temps aren't that high but I just to make sure your problem isn't heat related. the temps actually rose..
38c
56c
40c
after being on a few minutes..
hasnt turned off yet.
ill GIVE it some time and let you know later if it helped. If it rose, that means your computer is heating up fast, which is probably why it is shutting down.
Lets see what happens. Keep your eye on the temperatures.

If you WANT, remove the fan and see what temperatures it goes up to and when it shuts down.Borrow a working PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there overnite...
If the shutdowns stop replace the PSU...on SpeedFan when temperature 2 gets to 70c it shuts off..
the temp started rising really quickly after being on for a little while
it jumped from 52 to 70 in just over 15 minutes.
That seems to be the problem then...

Is that with the external fan or not?with.
it heats up fast either way, the fan doesnt seem to make much of a differenceI can't believe it's rising so fast and so high.

I think you will have to check to make sure all your computer is FREE of dust and it's not facing a wall or anything.
Also check the heatsink and make sure it's properly seated.

This is a recent issue, am I correct?

Solve : Repeating power-on self-test fail...finding the culprit?

Answer»

I've assembled the last couple of desktops I've owned, so I've got some measure of what's going on, but this has got me stumped. For about the last two months, on about every fourth or fifth start-up, when I push the power button I get a flash out of the LEDs and about two seconds rotation out of the fans, but then everything stops, and then the process repeats again, the LEDs flash and the fans fire up, and then it stops, and it just keeps doing that, over and over. One day when I was poking around I discovered that if I gave the heatsink on the mobo chip a bit of a wiggle, it'd snap out of the start-up/fail loop and go on to boot fine. It was as though there was a connection somewhere that just needed a bit of a nudge. So doing that got me through to last weekend, when no amount of nudging and wiggling stuff would bring it out of the start-up/fail loop. I FIGURED it was either a mobo problem or a PSU problem, but as the PSU is a fairly decent one, and still under warranty, I was leaning toward the mobo. So I went and bought a new mobo and some RAM to suit (no big drama as I'd been thinking about upgrading anyway)...

So the initial specs were:
Pentium 4 3.0ghz (Zalman CNPS7700 fan)
Gigabyte GA-8I945P
4GB DDR2 533mhz
Seagate SATA 750GB
Radeon X700
Seasonic M12 (500W)

But now the mobo and RAM have been replaced with:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4P
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 800mhz

So I swap the mobo/RAM and fire it up--same thing. Can't get past the first POST hurdle, or it's not even making it to POST. So I figure it's a power issue; first I TRY a different power lead, which doesn't help, then I swap the PSU for the original Antec one. Still no luck. So the only two variables that I haven't altered are the CPU and the Zalman fan. (I figure it's not a hard drive issue because I can disconnect it entirely and the same thing happens; it doesn't even get the chance to go on and say 'Primary drive failure'...same for the graphics card; remove it and it makes no difference.)

So are there any other checks I can do here, or should I try my hand at a new CPU?

Cheers,
turnipboy. The case could be at fault here, I've had this issue and it was a short.
Can you try another case? Ideally, run the computer with the bare minimum (PSU, motherboard, CPU +cooler, 1 stick of RAM, graphics card) on a cardboard box, and see if it powers up after disconnecting, checking, and connecting every cable again.
Let us know how it goes. Thanks for your reply, Calum. I tried what you suggested. I set the mother board out on some cardboard, with only the CPU, cooler, one stick of RAM, and graphics card in place. Only mobo connections were ATX/ATX_12V (plus CPU cooler). Same problem! Fires up for a second or two then switches off, fires up again, switches off. Tried it without the graphics card; same deal. I'll PICK up a new CPU tomorrow, probably an E8500, and see if that gets her going.

Cheers,
turnipboy. I'd say it's quite obvious that it's your PROCESSOR. The clue should have been when wiggling it made it work. But the wiggling was of the small heatsink of the motherboard chip, not the heatsink on the CPU.Oh, my bad. In that case, maybe you could CHECK the CPU fan and heatsink installation. When I built my first PC, it kept switching off after just a couple of seconds being on. I was just about to send the MOBO back when I finally got it to bios just long enought to check the CPU temperature. It was like 120 degrees celcius! Turns out the heatsink, although it appeared secure, wasn't screwed down quite tight enough. Just an extra turn of the screwdriver solved the problem. I'm not suggesting you necessarily tighten the heatsink, but check and make sure it's making full contact with the CPU.

The computer does not have a parallel port and the printer does not have USB. I purchased a cable that converts, but it will not work. The message says it is installed, but it will not print.

Is the better way to go a wireless router or is there some way to make this cable work? The cable came with a cd, but it only has Win98 and Win Me, nothing for XP. Any help anywhere?
Thanks have you tried a different cable converts? maybe that one is defective. you ALSO may be able to find a 6 ft parallel to usb cable.

just to be clear:

it doesnt have any ports like this on it right?:

Did you install printer driver BEFORE connecting printer to the computer?

The link you referenced was exactly what Acer tech support had me do.
I was in the Que for about 15 MINUTES and finally had a nice chat with a fellow named
Tony. He also mentioned that once you snapped the bottom of the base onto the monitor "neck" it was very hard to remove as the plastic tabs are very difficult to press in and remove. There are 8 tabs and GETTING them all pressed in at once is like aligning the
planets!

I really like the monitor but Acer could have done a better job engineering the base plate.

Solve : Memory problems????

Answer»

Howdy I bought my parts and built a PC from Tiger direct. These are the specs. Pent Dual Core Quad 3.0ghz cpu
XFX nvidia 790i Ultra SLI mother board. Nvidia GEFORCE 9800 GX2 graphics card and 8gb ofCorsair 2048mb 1333MHZ. Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer PCI Sound Card, running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Now here's my problem. When all 4 sticks of the memory are PUT in the computer after a bit I get freezing screen issues. The whole screen freezes and the sound repeats the last second over and over again when playing a game. I've taken the computer to tech heads and we've worked on it together. The computer will run fine with less then 8gb of memory WITHOUT freezing. I've replaced the memory with new memory right out of the package and have experienced the same problem when all 4 2048 sticks are placed in the motherboard. The motherboard was designed to hold up to 8gb of memory. So I'm thinking a voltage issue something like that. But to be honest I've never experienced it before. The computer has all the lastest drivers from Nvidia and their up to date also the sound card drivers are up to date for Vista 64 bit. Computer runs fine with 6gb or less down to 4gb. What do you think this might be? I am familiar with XP's blue screen for bad memory but this is a first. Thanks so much for wraping your brain around this. Check your MBoard manual for instructions on utilising all 8G of RAM...there may be a BIOS switch for this...
DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours...any errors at all and you have a bad stick of RAM.
You will need to test them one at a time to find the offending stick.See if this HELPS:

"For those familiar with the nForce 780i SLI, the board style mirrors this very closely, but there are a few key changes that have improved the layout quite considerably. Obviously the four DDR2 slots are now DDR3 – if you’re running above 1,600MHz though the two black slots need to be specifically used. This limits the use of the board to just a pair of DIMMs when you want to really crank it up (which is the whole point of the nForce 790i), so it seriously limits what you can currently do with it."

From here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/03/19/first_look_nvidia_nforce_790i_ultra_sli/4I'm using Corsair 4 sticks of 2048 1333 DDR3. I'm going try going into the bios and see if I can find out about the memory I seem to remember it having something about memory. Also where do I download memtest? Solve : PC won't boot?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the right place to post this and I didn't see anything relating to this problem. When turning on the computer it shows the first screen .. Big E and bottom right corner SAYS Boot (F10) Bios (F2) .. it hangs there for a few minutes then just goes to a black screen and just stays that way. There are no beeps or error codes. Only thing that has been done to this computer is RAM upgrades. I've taken all the Ram out which causes the error beeps that it should when there is no RAM. There are four memory slots. I have four sticks. First I took one out leaving 3 in.. turned PC on got same screen. Repeated this for each stick. Then I took all of the sticks out and I took each one and put one into the first slot, same thing, put second into first slot, same thing, third.. fourth, same thing. So I'm assuming it's not the RAM? Haven't done anything else to this PC. Only thing it was used for was web surfing and playing MMORPG game called DAoC. Hope I provided enough info. Any help would be great!

Quickest way to do it is to TRAVEL to Crucial's website and run the online scan on your machine...
This will tell you exactly what type and how much RAM that machine will take...kk sorry if I missed any information. Used another PC to get the information off of the emachines website. This is what I got off there for what kind of MB it has.

Operating System Windows XP

Also.. I can't get past the first screen that comes up when you first turn it on so.. I can't go onto a website to scan the machine.

NOTE: it's a Emachine Desktop T6532 .. everything in it is original except the additional ram that was added.. which was done awhile ago and it was running fine, just decided to stop working. That is the BIOS info...find out what MBoard it is and you can enter the info at Crucial manually...Put in computer on Crucials website and got this. Is this what you're asking for? (sorry for my computer dumbness )

Maximum Memory: 4096MB
Slots: 4 (2 banks of 2)
Standard Memory: 1024MB REMOVABLE

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

Solve : Can I have 3 hard drives??

Answer» HELLO I have an AMD Athalon, Win Xp Sp3, 512 RAM.
Can I add a third drive to the system?

I have a 20 Gig and an 80 GIG in it, and Im almost out of space.

I bought a 250 GIG drive to get some more space and I wanted to add the 250 GIG into the system., but I want all the info on the 80 GIG drive on the 250..
The 20 GIG Drive has O/S on it.
Can I add the 250 to the...say CD Player cable as a slave and transfer all the data?Yes.
There are many options for doing this and you're way is one of them...
You COULD also add a PCI/IDE card that will let you add up to 4 more IDE drives...
You could see if your MBoard has any SATA ports and buy a SATA drive...
You could "clone" the 20G OS drive to the new 250G and use it as your main HDD...

Many more possibilities.
Give some more thought on how the ideal setup would be for your machine and post back for more guidelines on how to get there...GREAT thanks Patio.
I like this idea of CLONING to the 250.

The 250 will have the O/S on it and all the data. Then I can free up the space in the case and send the data from the 80 Gig to the 250.
Net result is 250Gig has all the previous data and 150 Gig empty. Two hard drives 20 and 80 spare.

Sounds like a good solution to me.
Ok so will I open a new thread on how do I clone a drive? You could have stayed in this thread but no biggie...

Solve : MONITOR WORKS, BUT SCREEN IS STILL BLANK?

Answer»

Hello folks,

I just joined the forum, and am not a very computer "genius" but here's my question:
I just got a computer from a friend of mine who said it worked the last time he used it "LIKE 3 MONTHS ago", but stopped using it because he got a laptop. Anyway i got the computer, set everything up and turned it on, and the screen is completely blank.
I know the monitor works because i tried it on another computer, and i just put in a brand new Video card, hoping it would show signs of life, but to no avail. I know it has something to do with the actual computer but i am not SURE what it is, because when i turn it on i HEAR the computer purrring and all the lights go on etc.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!!!!!!

thanks a lot,

OliverTry the monitor from the 'good' computer with the 'bad' computer.

Post more info about the 'bad' computer: operating system, does it have onboard video, did it work before you added the video card (did you install drivers for the card?), etc.thanks so much, for responding.

Yes, I have tried the monitor from the 'good' computer to the 'bad' computer, same results.

Due to not being able to actually see the information on the computer, becuase of the problem, all the info i have on it, is that the computer is a: "Windows XP Home Edition OEM product".

Not quite sure what you mean by 'onboard video' but when i opened up the case of the computer i found a couple cards in there, not sure what they are but, assuming that they are probably a sound card and modem.

Nope it didn't work before i got the video card, and when i put the video card cd in it i can't actually install it because i dont see anything on the screen, but yes i did phisically put the card into the little slot inside the computer.

I'm not quite sure what the monitor is hooked up to. How many of these does the computer have:
my computer only comes with ONE, but by adding the video card (which has one too), that makes 2.Connect to the one that isn't part of the video card that you installed.we tried that first, before we even put the video card in. it didn't work thats why we got the video card, hoping it would help.Is the video card seated properly ? ?
Sometimes you need a bit of force to get them all the way in...NOT too much.
Is the hold down screw back on the bracket ? ? This is your Ground for the vid card.
Is this a new card ?
If so borrow one you know works and swap it in there...the vid card may have shipped DOA.

Solve : How to order correct video card?

Answer»

Last week I got a great response when I posted a topic of my monitor not working, and it appears that I have a bad onboard video "card." So, I ordered a new graphics card from NewEgg:

EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail Item #: N82E16814130085

Someone I work with warned me that the card might not FIT, and now, just looking at the picture on the BOX and comparing it to the expansion slots in the computer, I think he's right.

The computer has 3 expansion slots (about 3 1/4" total) that are off-white in COLOR, starting with a long opening (2 1/2") located closest to the outside of the case, followed immediately by about a 1/2" opening; I know this is where the video card pins should go. (There is also a dark BROWN slot that is not immediately next to the outside expansion openings.)

While I haven't opened the box, the picture shows the outside slot, followed by a short row of pins, then the longer row of pins. This is just the opposite of my opening.

So, I am ASSUMING that I need to return the video card and get a different one. However, I am not sure how to make sure that the video card is going to fit properly.

Any help would be appreciated...again!

so what is your computer motherboard or model?

Does it get to the Windows XP "splash screen" and restart? How FAR does it get into the loading process before it restarts? Also, what are the original discs that came with the computer?I have the orig. recovery disk set that came with my computer. Also, it comes on & at the WindowsXP logo, it begins looping (shutting down & restarting). Can you get into Safe Mode?
Guess what? I don't have a quote, but anyway, yes I can get into safe mode. As a matter of fact, that's how I'm accessing my computer & the internet right now.Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

Will it still loop? Thanks Brioni, but I used the orig. recovery disks, wiped the drive clean & re-installed. Now it's working as usual. Thanks everyone! I will remove this topic.Oh, I thought, your disks were missing, that's why you asked...She was motivated to find them, and many of us have been in similar circumstances.

Solve : Added RAM and now Two Short Beeps?

Answer»

Good day and thank you for reading. A few weeks ago, I got a old Dell Optiplez GX 270 tower from my father who got a new laptop. The problem is that it didn't come with RAM for some reason.

After I got new RAM (2x 512MB Kingston DDR PC3200 400MHz) and placed them in, The computer made two short beeps and the display didn't start up. Now every time I start up and attach the MONITOR, it recognizes it for a second and begins to show the screen, but then it turns off as if there is NOTHING connected.

If any other information is needed, I'll be happy to provide it. Thank you very much for reading and possibly responding.Oh, and also there are four letter in the back of the tower underneath the monitor input port (ABCD). The A, B, and C letters are green-lit and the letter D is orange.First thing, check out HTTP://support.dell.com/. See if they have any manuals that would be helpful for you.

It looks like you picked out the correct memory for the computer. Look at the Post Beep Codes.

If I were you, I would disconnect EVERYTHING in the computer. EVERYTHING. Now, plug everything in one at a time (wear a static band). Remember to not force anything. Each piece should always slide right into place. If you received the computer without memory, there could be something else wrong with it. You could have a bad power supply, CPU (probably not), or something like your NIC card isn't seated properly. Clean as you go.

I'm not there but I can almost guarantee you that this is something shorted out or not seated correctly. As you work, make SURE the CPU is in (with fan), power supply and memory. Try and boot with just those parts. See what you get. Thank you for the suggestion, I will do that right away and reply the results A.S.A.P.Well, I did everything that was said, and now it is giving me a totally different sequence of beeps when I start it up. I guess it was my fault...

Long beep...pause...three long beeps...pause...two long beeps.

Should I take it in to get repaired or is it totally...dead?

Solve : PS2 error message - can you help me get rid of it??

When switching on the computer I get the message that PS2 mouse failed to initialise, press any key to continue.

I changed to a wireless keyboard and mouse and stupidly threw away the old PS2 mouse before removing it from the hardware list/programs.

In device manager there is only the new cordless mouse.
Scan for hardware changes does not bring anything up.

Do I have to edit the registry or is there any other way to get rid of this message?

I've tried scan registry for errors with Glary and TUNE up

Solve : how to identify mobo on HP DC710 sff?

Answer»

Hello
Thanks for this forum

Is there a utility that will identify the motherboard on my HP dc7100 sff? Or is it as simple as looking somewhere on the board itself?

Thanks,It's probably a custom board but try:

a) Looking at the board for a manufacturer.

b) Belarc ADVISER: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html.

c) SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

Any particular reason that you want to know?thanks drmsucks

I recently did a cpu upgrade, and (following HP's manuals) I had to stick with a processor that has a 1mb cache. I read in forums and other docs, that I could have installed a 2mb cache processor. If the 2mb PROC will make a substantial difference, AND the mobo can tolerate it, then I will consider the faster proc.

I am not sure if that decision is based on the mobo or the chipset. I think the chipset.

Also..I want to identify the mobo just for KNOWING purposes.I understand but the processor type sounds like a BIOS issue - within the overriding constraint of the chipset. Have you looked for a BIOS upgrade?

Let us know if either id utility works for you.

Best of luck.HP has a few BIOS upgrades (this is an older pc), and they mention that they can handle 600 type processors. But no mention of the cache.

I see in the Intel page that all 600 processors come with 2mb cache, therefore, i will assume that I can use a 2mb processor by virtue of the comments in the bios release notes.

Seems reasonable.

Let us know how you make out.last one

do you think i will see a substantial speed increase with a 2mb cache proc? I took the pc from a 2.8 to a 3.6, and I CANT say I notice a massive difference. The pc runs win xp, office, firefox or IE; nothing too demanding.

I dont want to waste the money on the 2mb if I wont feel it too much.

THoughts?I very much suspect that you will not notice much, if any, difference.

But, all others are invited to comment to give you further input.Price it out and post the difference in dollars and we'll know whether it's worth it or not...Quote from: patio on September 19, 2008, 03:23:42 PM

Price it out and post the difference in dollars and we'll know whether it's worth it or not...
I think that he has already upgraded to the 1 MB processor so the incremental cost will be the full cost of a new 2 MB processor - less whatever he can get for his used processor.drmsucks hit it on the head. I paid 59 for the 1mb (ebay). I am eyeing a 2mb for $38 and 2 days left. So I may be looking at almost 50 for the 2mb.

Costs aside, which are important, I just wonder of I am pushing a faster cpu on a slower board and chipset. You would think that going from 2.8 to 3.6 would cause a difference; I have yet to really feel it. My machine takes longer than expected to boot. I have run bootvis, but it doesnt produce the drivers REPORT that would educate me.

Thanks all for your help,
NNABRIL - I'll stand by my original inclination that you won't be able to "feel" $50 worth of difference. Please let us know what you decide and how you make out.

Best of luck.Agreed.

Solve : Annoying Crash :(?

Answer»

Hey everyone..

I got a second hand computer, but bought a new hardrive.. And after loading XP, drivers etc.. All was fine.
But once I try to play a game, it'll flash a quick blue screen and then restart
(Sometimes it doesn't even get to the pre-game titles/credits etc)

It's also HAPPENED WATCHING a youtube video :/ (It was as I clicked for a new tab)

I've tried reinstalling the game, UPDATED graphics card drivers..
(The bios is a few months out of date, but I don't want to risk creating more problems..)
Can anyone help?

I've tried both Quake 4 & Hellgate London
and playing onnn:
Q6600 (clocked to 2.7)
320MB 8800GTS
Asus p5w dh deluxe
3GB Memory (I've tried MEMTEST and it appears fine)
There are also 4 fans all running fine..

(I've tried going into system properties and unclicking 'Automatic restart', but it still restarts)

Help meee.. Please Wait...you got a 2nd hand computer that has a quad core 6600 in it and an 8800GTS vid card ? ?
And 3G of RAM ? ?
Yeh.. and only for £330 XD

Any ideas on what the problem could be?
The original HDD that came with was busted, and has vista on..

Could the setting on bios be set for vista etc? And conflict with XP?
Would a 'back to default' reset on the bios be a good idea? No.
The BIOS could care less and doesn't see what OS is installed...
However resetting it back to defaults is a good PLACE to start.
Is this a legit XP install?
Did you remember to install ALL MBoard drivers from the driver CD that came with the machine ?
Is the old drive still in this machine ?I restarted it back to default and no change

Yeh, legit version of XP.. Disc etc

I didn't get any driver CD.. But I can't find any mboard drivers? :S
Only to update the bios..

And no, the old hdd has been taken out You NEED the MBoard drivers or that machine will continue to have issues.
They are available at the ASUS site along with a PDF of your MBoard Owners Manual...both FREE.

Solve : Windows can't see more than 130Gb?

Answer»

I'm INSTALLING a new Spinpoint 500Gb SATA 2 HDD with Windows 2000 Pro - Service Pack 4 slipstreamed.
SETUP offers me just 130Gb of unallocated space. I know there's a fix for this, but I don't know what it is. You need to enable LBA, probably in the BIOS. Your motherboard MANUAL will give instructions.
Hope this helps. The Spinpoint drives have a tool you can download for the full drive to be seen by windows.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_DiskManager.html

What motherboard are you using? An old motherboard may not see all 500GB of the drive. It's a Gigabyte S series and , fortunately, the mobo disk had a software tool for large drive recognition. It still doesn't allow me to PARTITION the drive during Setup though, so I'm stuck with my OS on a 130Gb partition. Nevermind, the whole drive is now seen. Thanks for the responses. Its no problem, You might have to play a bit of a game of musical hard drives if you want one large partition though. No, I'm going to partition the rest of the HDD. It's just that 130Gb is way too much for my OS drive. Nevermind, I can live with it for the time being. Thanks again.

Solve : Plug and Play Bios (Fail Safe)?

Hi Im just fiddling with a computer and wanted to put an LG CRD 8522B Cd Player in it.
Having some previous experience with CD Players recently, I thought it would be a piece of cake. But this PLUG and Play Bios (Fail Safe) came up in the device manager with a yellow mark, and the computer doesnt see the CD Player.

This little computer has Win98SE, 32 meg ram (512), Intel Pentium Chip.
Ive tried a different cable reset the jumper on the CD to CS, Ive tried SLAVE, so on.

So how can I fix this yellow mark in the control panel if I cant get the CD recognized?
I have 2 usb connections at the rear if thats any help?
Thank you.

Win98 needed drivers for most if not all Optical drives...
Did the drive ship with drivers ? ?

If not you MAY get lucky with some generic drivers...

Solve : Is it worth upgrading my video card??

Answer»

Quote from: brett74 on October 18, 2008, 06:46:41 AM

I think you don't need a credit card you can use a DEBIT card too. I have almost the same computer and it's pretty easy to upgrade. I have the sr1403 and I've upgraded the power supply with no problem. Also if you plan on doing any gaming I would definately upgrade both the power supply and graphics card.

Okay so its not that difficult. okay so now I'm planning on maybe a 8600 because 8400 is no good for gaming. And how do I buy a power supply. It's like something in a box right? and is it easy to install? the 8600 does not require a that large amount of power, because it does not draw that MUCH power, compared to the new 9 or GTX series.

I use a 500 w power supply and it works perfectly well, so your power supply does not need to be specially upgraded for the new cardQuote
I use a 500 w power supply and it works perfectly well, so your power supply does not need to be specially upgraded for the new card

He has a 250W PSU...i'm sure he'll need more than that to run the 8600 series card.Well a card like the 9400 only needs 300 watts and so an 8400 needs much less. And maybe an 8600 will be able to be supported by 250 watts. Also one thing, why can't you just GET extra cords for a video card rather than having to buy a WHOLE new power supply unit. Computers will be easier to deal with. And this is my motherboard I think

ASUS A8M2N-LAAlright screw it I'm going for the 8400gs.1. Do I need a better power supply unit?
2. Do I have to uninstall any current drivers before installing the new video card or do I have to disable something? And if I do how?
3. Is an 8400gs a good gaming card?
4. Will my computer automatically detect the 8400 if my 6150 is an onboard graphics chip and unremovable.
5. How much does ram cost these days? Can I buy some from best buy?
6. Can my PC even get a new video card? (noobish question but this guy once said that I can't upgrade if I got an onboard video card already, I thought he was an idiot but I just wanna be sure).
7. Will the video card FIT? I've seen cards like the 9800gt and they are huge.

If you want better gaming performance I don't think you will see much difference between your onboard 6150le and an 8400gs if that's all you change. Your system has the Asus A8M2N MoBo and its a good platform for upgrades. To see any real improvement, save your money until you can add at least an 8600GT and an additional 1GB of RAM (you have
PC2-4200 240 pin DDR2 SDRAM), and a 380 WATT PSU (look for one that has at least 2 18a rails. Be sure to get the 8600 GT with 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 as it's a steal right now at Newegg and is about the same price you'll pay for an 8400GS at Best Buy. (You'd really be better off ordering from Newegg over the phone and sending a money order if that's the only way you can pay). This MoBo has a PCI-e X16 slot that will work with the 8600gt. When you install this card you will have to disable the on-board video in BIOS. Not sure, but it might automaticaly disable with the PCI-e enabled. If at that point you still want more, you'll find AMD 64 5000+ and 6000+ CPU's at a bargin right now.
Good luck..

Solve : Acomdata external hard drive became a CD!!!?

Answer»

Hello,

I bought Acomdata external hard drive a few MONTHS ago. Transferred many valuable files on it (family pictures, etc.). Yesterday, tried to delete a large file that was saved on it. Took too long so I rebooted the external drive and computer, possibly in the middle of the delete PROCESS. After reboot, the external hard drive doesn't show anymore on my windows XP 'my computer' (it used to show as something like: D:HD_PART).

The odd thing is that it now appears as a CD drive icon in 'my computer'. If I click on this icon it prompts me to insert a CD and I can't see my files. Will I be able to access my all TIME favorite files How PLEASE help!Right click My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the external and rifght click it and select Properties and report back with the details...

BTW it hasn't become a CD drive...your existing drive letter designations have changed since something happened and D: was re-assigned to the CD drive.

My guess is the external was un-plugged prematurely and is going to be reported as RAW in properties...Thanks for reply!

OK, I found it in the disk management (It's called CD-ROM 1 and has the letter F:). When I click properties it is identified as DMI USB2.0 CD-ROM USB Device. It also says that the device works properly...

I noticed that when I right-click on the F: I get the option to change the letter and path. Do you THINK that can help?No you are looking at the CD drive...you need to find the external HDD in Disk Management.

Hi all
I just got a NEW 160Gb seagate HDD but when i put it my computer it does not detect it . I used to have a 120 Gb HDD prior to this which was faulty so i got this as a replacemnet, but the sata cable which comes with this does not fix on my motherboard so i used the sata cable of 120 HDD,does this make any difference?Does it mean that my motherboard is not compatibale with new HDD?

If any additional information is required then please let me know..

Thanks in advanceI don't understand when you say the SATA cable doesn't fit the MBoard...they are all the same.

Also there's a possibility the drive was shipped un-formatted...Windows will not detect it until it's formatted.
It's showing up in the BIOS yes ? ?"Patio" is right. All SATA cables are the same, and no, they are not specific to any drive. If you have the cable correct, try removing the MOBO battery for 30 minutes. Then SNAP it back in and REBOOT. That cleans out the BIOS and post whether the new drive shows up.Right-click My Computer / choose Manage / Choose Disk Management. Do you SEE it there?
