Solve : NO POST BEEP?

Answer»

Hello.
I have been reading with interest some of the causes of a PC to fail to boot into windows, when the usual single POST BEEP is missing.
I have this problem, but what i cannot understand is why SWITCHING off the PC by holding in the silver button for a few seconds, then switching off the rocker switch on the back of the PC, leaving for a few seconds, and switching back on cures the problem every time - i.e the computer then boots into windows succesfully.
I am not sure whether to just keep performing this action or to look at the cause
( MAYBE a memory problem ). As yet i have not run a memory test programme.
My PC is a Microland Tech CB150 - RUNNING Windows XP

Many Thanks

Paultry doing a C drive check.
Go to my computer
Right click Local Disk (or what ever you've called)
choose the 'Tools' tab.
then error-checking and check now.
Restart your computer, and it will be DONE. May take some time thou so be patient Your problem is electromechanical. It has nothing to do with memory oro hard drive. It is either a problem with the switch, the wiring or the power SUPPLY. Period.Thanks.
How do i fix it ?

Solve : DVD/CD burner problem...?

Answer»

I recently bought a new Sony DRU - 820A DVD/CD burner. It worked fine for about a month then one day it started making bad discs. It would say it completed the burn successfully but the files would not work when I clicked on them. The window showing all the files on the disc would just freeze. I tried slowing the speed down from 16x to 8x and it works but it still has trouble burning once in a while. The discs say they are compatible with 16x and they worked before that day when the burner suddenly started having problems. It didn't take any damage or impact of any kind.

Any THOUGHTS about what could be wrong would be APPRECIATED. Thanks.

BTW I'm RUNNING Windows XP with SP1
AMD Sempron (TM) 2400+
256MB RAM
What software are you using to burn your CDs?I believe its Nero 6 SEFirst of all...I can't help but notice you are running XP (SP1)...

You should visit Windows Update and check for high-priority updates.

You should also check to see if Nero 6 SE needs to be updated as well.

I'd visit Microsft first...then open Nero and look for an option to update if it is available. If not...why not try another program to burn CDs and DVDs...there are plenty of them out there...some are totally free.

Some of the problems you may be EXPERIENCING may be caused by simply not having your operating system and/or your burner software up-to-date.

Keep us posted...Also keep that burn speed down...it makes the best CD's.
And try a DIFFERENT brand of media as well.

Are you remembering to finalise these burns ? ?

Solve : Printer Install & Recognize Issue In Device Manager (Image Device)?

Answer»

I'm having a printer installation issue. I have Win XP and am trying to install a Canon MP830 All-in-one printer. I've worked on this for weeks and usually 3 to 5 hrs. a day. I had some help from computer gurus and still not fixed. Basically, as soon as the power button on the printer is turned on and the printer is connected to the PC with the 2.0 USB cable the PC will LAGG on any operation. A friend recently told me to manually delete any old drivers that MAY be in the system. This was the best approach so far because, I found a web page that explained how to delete possible other printer drivers in the PC. I deleted the files and then downloaded and installed the driver from the Canon website which took longer than normal. At least the drivers did load and in the Start... printers & Faxes the drivers were listed and in ready MODE. In Device manager the Canon Mp830 printer was listed under image device. The printer worked fine! I printed from word and the web with no problems. As soon as I do a reboot the system will lag terribly if the printer is on and pluged into the USB. I then have to shut down and leave the printer powered off so I can boot up the PC normally. I have noticed when I did reboot and the printer is off and USB cable connected the system BOOTS up perfectly but....In the Device Manager there is NO IMAGE DEVICE listed or my MP830 printer. Can someone help me out with this issue please?? I will even except emails at @.net

EMail address removed to prevent Spamwow..weird..but are you sure that was the LATEST driver?have you try re-install the driver?Yes I tried to reinstall the drivers about 10 times. I believe this is a deeper problem than the drivers. Currently the drivers are installed and listed in the printers and faxes box in windows. It is not listed anywhere in Device Manager.

Solve : Maxtor hard disk failure?

Answer»

I have an external maxtor hard disk which, dutin a power failure began to blink rapidly and when power was restored continued blinking and is not RECOGNIZED by Windows XP as being ATTACHED to the system. Any suggestions? If it's a USB drive, try unplugging it while the computer is turned off...

Turn the computer back on and then plug the cable back in to see if Windows recognizes it.

If it doesn't, see if the Device MANAGER shows any errors...you may have to reinstall the driver for it if Device Manager is showing any type of error...you may also need to go to Maxtor's site to see if they have a Diagnostic Utility you can use in Windows or DOS to see if you can test the inegrity of the drive...

Here's a link to their DiscWizard software PROGRAM.

you still didn't answer me,is that HDD a brand new one or something you bought from like ebay? When you installed your motherboard drivers, did you make sure to install the chipset driver first? Whether or not you install this one first can mean up to a 40% difference in performance.I boot it in normal mode...and the HDD the one i linked u to is what i got i bought it brand new.and using ata. {When you installed your motherboard drivers, did you make sure to install the chipset driver first? Solve : My Computer Shuts Off on its Own?

Answer»

I'm not exactly experienced when it comes to computer problems (I'm not going to lie ). Although I do have a bit of forum experience and I did use the search button. However others' problems seem to be different, possibly heat-related. When my computer shuts off (it usually takes over an hour or so of it being on) it automatically restarts, runs a dskchk, sends me an error report, and proceeds as normal. The dskchk always runs on drive D (a drive I have my computer games on). The error report I get takes me to http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Response.aspx/685/en-us/5.1.2600.2.00010300.2.0?SGD=7d1741bf-0830-4c7d-8536-c98d29268207. This link would claim to explain my problem, and I'm positive if the error report is CORRECT that my problem is with new software, not new hardware. I was almost possible I found out what program was causing the problem (a little game I had downloaded, ironically at the request of people on another forum). The game was safe, but I think it had something to do with a joystick problem (constantly tried to configure itself to a joystick, which I have never connected to this computer). I of course wouldn't have thought the problem linked to the joystick issue, but then I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321637, which also seemed to relate to my problem (same error message, stop error, etc.). Anyways I removed the program, then my computer slowed drastically down and shut off after a similar PERIOD of time. Then I realized the .zip installer was still on, but I hadn't removed it through the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. I reinstalled it, reset its settings to default, removed the program, deleted all of its files, and now I'm here. The computer has SPED up again, although I haven't been on long enough to tell you if it has stopped again. I'm positive many of my methods will be laughable, but eh, coming here is problem the best thing I've done in hopes of solving my problem. Thanks for any help in advance. The most common causes of restarts are bad RAM...heat...or the PSU.

It's rarely a software problem but at this point instead of ruling it out let's check the other things. This will give you a point of reference...

DLoad and run MemTest. Let it run for a few hours. Any errors and it's a RAM issue.

Next remove either the case or a side panel and use a small fan to direct airflow over the main components. If the issue is still there it's not heat related. Take this opportunity to do some housekeeping using a can of compressed air to clean out all heatsinks and fans. Use a Q-Tip to hold the fan blades still while blowing the dust out.

If you can borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there for a day or so. If the problem goes away then the PSU needs replaced.

Last but not least DLoad and run the diagnostics from the manuf. site for your hard drive. This will eliminate it as the culprit if everything checks out.

Meanwhile list all the protection programs you currently have and run all your scans too.Sometimes if it is a software issue it will leave a trail. Check out the event viewer its in the control panel under administrative tools look for any red x's and see what the errors are. If it is software it will tell you what program is crashing. But more then likely it sounds like a hardware error.Every single error is an application hang. I ran memtest and didn't find any errors, but it only ran for about an hour (with no other programs running) as I didn't want my computer to shut off. As for protection I have AVG FREE Edition, Zone Labs, Spybot, and Lava Soft Ad-Aware. I ran a full system scan and found nothing (multiple times). I guess I'll try the fan idea, only I don't see why the computer would run dskchks every single time it booted up (regardless of whether or not it shut off properly the last time). Thanks, I'll try to keep you posted on anything I find.

[Edit] The file in all the application hangs is iexplore. Anyone know of a program that can correct this? I would be greatful if anyone could tell me whether or not this could be the problem, and whether or not there is a way of correcting it.Re-read the steps i outlined. 1 of 4 have been done so far...in diagnosing trouble it is worth the effort to eliminate known possibilities in order to narrow down the unknown culprit.
It's called a flowchart approach and prevents going off in a bunch of directions that may prove fruitless.

Again let's eliminate the hardware possibilities before suspecting software...or the registry etc.I am sorry, as I didn't have much time. I posted only a little while after reading your suggestons. By the time I reopened this thread I assure you I had a fan blowing straight through the back of my computer (yea there's way too much dust, it just about looks like it's snowing in here). I'll wait a while, and if it doesn't shut off I'll post here again. If it does, well I still will. But due to time restrictions I can assure you nothing else will have been done by my next post (unless the time/date of this post and my next are obviously a ways apart). I would hope it isn't my hard drive, as this hard drive isn't much over a year old, and my last one lasted me a good 5 or so (had to replace it). So that will be the last of your 4 ideas I try. If the fan doesn't work then I'll move on to the PSU. Thanks.Quote

Sorry for the late reply. But overheating may be the problem. The computer has not shut off on its own while I have been using a fan, although the chkdsk's continue to run. Any more help would be appreciated.Quote from: aok_oldschool on JUNE 23, 2007, 03:23:33 PM

Quote
The dskchk always runs on drive D (a drive I have my computer games on).

If the hard drive that the chkdsks are being run on is not the boot disk, you could try removing the hard drive and see if the problem remains.

Also, as patio says, if you have not yet cleaned out dust do so as soon as possible or the problem may get worse. If the CPU heatsink is difficult to clean - it may be easier if you remove it.Drive D isn't a separate hard drive I just formatted it that way. Is there a way to remove only that drive (disable it, etc)? After all the boot drive is on the same piece of hardware.. Sorry I'm being pretty much computer illiterate.

I probably will have to remove it to clean out the dust. The D: partition is not the source of your woes...but yes you can just delete it .
Why would you want to do this though ? ?I'm not going to delete it. Thanks for the word I was looking for. Anyways it keeps running chkdsk on the partition. I believe the problem to be heat related as the computer does not shut off (or hasn't yet anyways) with an additional fan to cool it down. However the CHKDSK still continues.I'm not really sure about this, but it seems to me like the computer shutting down and chkdsk running every time the computer starts up are caused my separate problems, because the fan solved one problem but not the other. What MS Suggests...I thought it might be the registry. Thanks, I'll update you on if I can end this.

Solve : Specific Power Supply Question?

Answer»

I know there are quite a few power supply questions on this forum but I think mine needs specific ATTENTION. I have 2 hard drives running 512 gigs of memory. A DVD drive, dual core processor, 320 MB Nvidia e-Geforce 8800 graphics card, 2 gigs of RAM. I use a 450 watt power supply but it seems the performance I get out of games is mediocre. With 45 fps in Counter Strike Source and just get inconsistent performance in any game INCLUDING The Sims 2, Battlefield 2, Medieval 2 Total war, Age of Empires 3, Quake etc.. I asked my dad, who is an old school computer builder , tells me anything more is unnecessary. I tried doing research on my own and this is the first time I actually asked my question to anyone else.

Do I need a larger power supply? Any suggestions at all?gogogoomango .......Quote

If you WANT to do a calculation as to the psu required, go this site and do the calculation... http://carpc.kyferez.com/Tools/PSUWattageCalculator.php

Which processor are you using ?
What type of ram do you have installed ?
Is your PSU a 450 watt bargin basement PSU or a good high quality 450 watt PSU ?

Your power supply will ***not*** affect the speed of your games. The type and speed of your RAM, motherboard chipset, display resolution and driver update state and settings, are the SORT of thing you should be looking at.

A Nvidia 8880 GTX review I just read gave fps figures of

Quake 4

average 44 fps (1920 x 1200, SMP support, 8x AA and sat all other details and effects to max.)

average 57 fps (used the NVIDIA control panel for the 8800 GTX to dial in 4x AA and 16x AF with all other settings the same)

And I see this regarding 8800 performance including low fps

"The problem is known by nvidia.

Half-Life 2 Lost Coast: GeForce 8800 GTX fog looks different than
GeForce 7900 GTX fog, and dynamic shadows look solid black.
The GeForce 8800 GTX image quality matches the Microsoft Reference
Rasterizer. This issue may affect other Half-Life 2 based engines such as
Counter-Strike Source and Half-Life Episode 1. NVIDIA is working with the
application developer to try to patch their application."

Maybe you should check for updated drivers and /or game PATCHES?

This help alot. I run a hi-res monitor at 1440 x 900 and get about Identical performance out of Quake 4. Just about everything you said sounds about right. I guess I just wanted to know if my performance what what I should be expecting. I installed the driver that was released may 16 and that helped a little. But I'll be waiting for more news.

Solve : Need a midrage/high end video card?

Answer»

heres the low down. im buying this computer:

HP Pavilion Media Center TV PC (M8100N)

HP M8100N
• AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
• 500GB hard drive
• 3GB of DDR2 memory
• Windows Vista Premium

and id like to install a video card since it only comes with an NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6150 SE graphics card and 623MB of video memory—128MB dedicated and I had a few questions.

Im assuming this card uses Directx 9, so if i were to buy a Direct x10 card (im looking at the GeForce 8600 GTS with 256MB GDDR3 memory) and have both installed will i effectively have 320 MB of video memory or will the Directx 9 card just be taking up space in my tower?

Is the 8600 gts the right choice? Im not looking to build a power house, I just want a PC that will play games in a fairly high to higest resolution for the NEXT couple years (especially Crysis).

Speaking of Crysis, should I be able to run it in high resolution with this setup?
Here are the unofficial but realitic specs:

Recommended Requirements
CPU: Dual-core CPU (Athlon X2/Pentium D)
Graphics: Nvidia 7800GTX/ATI X1800XT (SM 3.0) or DX10 equivalent
RAM: 1.5Gb
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 512k+ (128k+ upstream)
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX10 with Windows Vista

Also, am I only limited to Nvidia or would an ATI card work as well?

That is all I suppose. My main concern is compatability issues between the two video cards. Thanks for reading and hopefully for the clarifications.from what i have heard the 8600 is a great card for midrange gaming i have an 8800 gts 640mb version and i love it.

haha dude, i apreciate the post but you didnt answer any of the questions. you just bragged about your $600 video card.my video card wasn't 600$ i wasn't BRAGGING merely stating that i am happy with it. If you don't want someones opinion then don't ask for it. I told you that the 8600 was a good video card

The 8600 is only 2 steps below my card....... and they are not giant steps from what i have read.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130071
this is what i have see the price tag

This is what i thought we were discussing
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130086
TehGreg, the 8600 GTS is a pretty good card and if that is your budget, then I would recommanded it to you. If you have a 100 bucks around somewhere, like the 2ND post in the newegg review you can get the 8800 GTS 320MB. But the difference between the 2 cards that are a major problem to you is that the 8600 is meant for videos such as hooking up a TV on it while the 8800 series are for games such as yourself alright, I'll be the jerk here, THATS a waste of money on a 8600 card with the type of premium hardware you will be getting, I would go for more pipe lines in a gts card at least. That cpu will be laying on a recliner in nap stage with the 8600. I wouldn't nag on TehGreg too much, he might just bale you out some day on *issues.......good call chilly, i might get that 8800 but just wait a few months to see if prices go down. Nvidia should make a card bridging the gap between the 8600 and 8800 though. But Directx 10 hasn't been out for long so hopefully they'll be cheaper by the time Crysis comes out. Ill just play CS till then.Quote from: halogramps on June 26, 2007, 02:06:36 PM

You should disable your onboard video when you get your new card to avoid problems.
You will then just have the 8600GTS, or whatever card you get, and that card's video memory, in this case 256Mb, not 320Mb.

An 8600GTS is about equivalent to either of those cards. I wouldn't say you'd be able to run it at max details or anything, but it should run fairly well.

Quote
Also, am I only limited to Nvidia or would an ATI card work as well?
Either would work fine.

As has been said, you may want to go for a better video card.
How much do you have to spend on this UPGRADE?Sorry

Look at the schematics of the board and you'll want to locate the connectors on the board for your USB and front panel audio connector.

Hopefully, you'll be able to locate the connectors.thanksi was able to connect the connecters. thank god they have writing on them.

the SOUND is very quiet and distorted when using the front jacks.

im not sure if this is a problem but i could not find all the connectors.

Solve : AGP 2X and 4X?

Answer»

I have an old PC with an AGP 2X port and I have an AGP video card for it which works fine. If I replace my motherboard with a newer type with an AGP 4X or 8X port will the video card work ok but slower?

Thank
You are quite right to wonder about this. Many 4x / 8x slots will not accept a 2x card. You may need a new card. Speeds are backward compatible, so a 4x card will work in a 2x slot, but not always the other way around. Be careful because you could kill the motherboard.

In general MIXING 4x and 8x slots and cards is easier than trying to get an old 2x card to work in TODAY's hardware. Don't spoil the ship for the sake of a pennyworth of tar.

# Some motherboards including Intel i845 or 865, 875 chipsets based motherboards will not accept AGP 2x cards and they may even damage the motherboard. if you install the wrong type AGP card.

# Most video cards will accommodate two or more AGP slot types. For example current GeForce FX 5200 card by Jaton will support AGP 2x/ 4x or 8x slots.

# Also most motherboards will (if it has an AGP slot) will accommodate two or more types of cards. For example all current motherboards will accommodate AGP 4x or AGP8x type card. (Even though it may not support the additional data band width of AGP 8x)

# Most of the new motherboards have locking mechanism for card at the far end of AGP slot. Do not damage that. Follow the instruction on the motherboard MANUAL or take care to study the locking mechanism and release the lock when installing or removing cards.

# Some old AGP cards in early days had a jumper or dip switch to change between AGP 2x and 4X modes. If you are using one of them make sure you set it correctly.

this message for Contrex:

I just installed a PNY Technologies nVidia GeForce FX 5200 8x VGA video card into my computer. I have an Athalon 1.99 gig processor; 1.5 gigs of RAM; Windows XP Pro; Syntax Motherboard sv266m with VIA ProSavage DDR KM266 chipset. I received for father's day a Gateway 19" LCD monitor with 1440 x 900 resolution. I originally got a new video card because I could not find a resolution choice in my device display that said 1440 x 900 and a helpdesk person suggested to upgrade my display adapter. Currently my computer boots up and I get the Windows XP splash screen and then it goes to black - no blue Welcom screen and no access to my computer. I tried changing BIOS settings with the help of a systems administrator friend; tried booting in safe mode; tried failsafe settings to reboot - nada. Same thing - black after Windows splash screen. I tried plugging back into the original VGA port for my onboard display adapter; same thing. Someone suggested my motherboard/chipset may not support the GeForce FX 5200, but somwhow I doubt that, but....any ideas?OK, I see your motherboard is AGP 4X, per: http://www.shopping.com/xPF-Syntax-SYNTAX-FB266-DDR-VGA-SND-LAN

As contrex said, "all current motherboards will accommodate AGP 4x or AGP8x type card. (Even though it may not support the additional data band width of AGP 8x)." So, the card should work in your computer. Is the card new?

Is this the first time you've used an add-on card in lieu of your onboard video? What's the rated capacity of your computer's power supply?

Solve : Issues with CRT Monitor?

Answer»

at the middle of my screen, my picture is 'divided' in two parts. the top HALF is slightly darker than the bottom, and everything on the top half is streched long, while everything on the bottom is scrunched. i have updated the DRIVERS for both my monitor and my video card and have been having the same problem when i connect the monitor to a different computer. the bottom of the picture also shakes, but just the very bottom of the screen. i'm wondering if it is a moire effect, but my monitor does not have an adjustment setting for that. can anyone help me?

computer: emachine RUNNING winXP
monitor: Sylvania S90 CRT
video card: geforce 6100
display: 1280x1024 / 75Hz

note- changing the resolution/refresh rate has not helped How old is that monitor?

Does it have a degauss button or on-screen menu option to degauss? I'd look for that and try it.

That means it a shoping day oooo its a shopping day.

If its HP monitor its a shopping day for sure. Had trouble woth those 20times.yeah, saddly i think it may be time for a new one. this monitor is about 6 or 7 YEARS old i think. it does have a degauss feature, but it does not help either. i'm still hoping to find a 'cure' for my poor dying monitor, after all, it is a really nice monitor (for a crt, it's been the best).

it does have a menu and all that, just no moire adjustment. Dont buy HP at all. I replaced mine 20 timesIf your monitor is that old, then it's most likely time for a new one. You could probably take your monitor in somewhere to have it repaired, but it might not worth the price. But it wouldn't hurt to call a few places and see if you can get a free (or at least cheap) estimate.Give some thought to making the change to LCD.i do WANT to get a nice lcd, but that's the thing, i don't have the money yet

i'm sure it would be more costly to have it repaired than to just replace it. i may as well buy a new computer too, emachines aren't exactly top-of-the-line..............

thanks anyways, everyoneYou might look for used CRT. In my area, I know a place that sells some used ones very cheap. I also belong to a computer users group that collects used equipment and makes it available to about anyone; they ask for a small donation, although it's not required. Take a look in the classified ads, too. Quote from: soybean on June 25, 2007, 09:33:08 PM

Take a look in the classified ads, too.

That's a good starting point. Do you have PennySaver in your area, Namico?yeah that's a big 10-4. i was initially hoping to -fix- my crt, but i'm giving up on it now, lol. the pennysaver is a great opition to find tons of stuff.

ima just get me a new computer system, that way i can get everything i want without costing so much (at least not as much in the long run). If you retrieve monitors from tree lawns on garbage night be warned...only every 4th one will fire up...

Solve : COMPUTER NOT RECOGNIZING HARDWARE ANYMORE?

Answer»

The other day, I suddenly lost connection to the Internet and was
unable to sign in. This turned out to be a problem with our firewall and our
service provider FINALLY rectified it for us. However, I have
subsequently found that the computer has stopped RECOGNISING our hardware
(scanner, speakers & printer) which all previously worked fine. Also, the
start menu and task BAR on Windows have changed as well as the Screen
Saver and the computer is not registering anything I CHANGE in the Control
Panel. I am pressing Apply and OK. Can you help me as I really need to
be able to use the printer etc! Thanks very MUCH!

Computer is Packard Bell, running on Windows XP. Currently using Norton Antivirus & have just started using AVG Anti-Spyware. Remaining RAM 512MB.
Am not very computer literate so if anyone can help, would be very appreciated!

ThanksIs Norton up-to-date?is it fine in safe mode?Is this a shared network printer or is it attached to the computer?

Go into Control Panel/System and see if there are any exclamation marks and report back.

Solve : I'm at the end of my rope- please help!?

Answer»

Okay, here's the short of it...

I have an E-machines Desktop (not sure what model, I bought it in the fall of '05) with a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS (which was NOT included in the original box). Plus, I've got a 23 inch Viewsonic monitor. This thing, while not completely state of the art, is pretty sweet when it works.

My problems with the machine have been varied, few and far between. I've had some Virus/spyware issues in the past, nothing special, but I was forced to wipe the slate clean with the restore disk as that particular virus had corrupted more files and processes than I could count.

My most recent issue with the machine is certainly the most troubling. On the 31st of this last July, I began to install Battlefield 2: Special forces. The installation completed, but after I restarted and clicked the icon to begin, a single pop-up window appeared over a blank screen. My memory is fuzzy, but I recall it said something to the extent that something had been corrupted and the loading could not proceed. This wasn't a huge blow to me, as the game never struck me as particularly interesting. I figured I could simply uninstall it and then toss the dvd-rom into my bucket of defunct cd's, right?

I went to restart the computer, and at first, everything seems hunky dory. The BIOS screen loads completely without issue. Then, all of the sudden, Windows fails to load. All there is, is a black screen that will occassionally flicker between varying shades of blackness.

This is irritating, so I push the main power button to manually restart the computer. The BIOS loads again, and the same thing happens. Windows fails to load, the Amber light on the desktop itself flickers, and nothing happens . I attempt to restart it, again and again and again, and NOTHING. I'll admit it, I got pretty pissed quick.

Once I regained my composure, I retried the process. Nothing. I tried looking online over a period of days for something, anything that could help. I got a mixed bag of advice, ranging from Power supplies to VIDEO card TROUBLES to Hard drives. Really the only thing any of these suggestions had in common was to indicate that it was a HARDWARE issue, although I still have my doubts about that.

A couple weeks passed, well, more like a MONTH, til the end of August. At this point I still hadn't MADE any headway and had pretty much given up. I tried re-sitting the hard drive, the video card, the memory; nothing. I cleaned out the inside of the desktop tower; nothing. I checked all of the cables and connections, along with all of the previous steps I tried; again, nothing.

At this point, I was absolutely desperate. A few months previously I had nuked the contents of my hard-drive after a particularly nasty virus, and I considered using that solution again. Only problem was, I couldn't find the effing disk. I tried using system restore off safe mode, but that didn't work either.
HEAVENS TO MERGATROID.

And now, I'm here. I'm at the end of my rope people, I just want my bloody computer back! I've thought about new hardware, even a new computer! If any of you can recommend ANYTHING, please god, ANYTHING, I would be very appreciative.

-Cordially yours, Jackson Sheedy
1st of all, windows system restore wasn't the best idea to choose as a back up.try Norton ghost.
My last idea for you DEPENDING on what you told us,formatting the HDD would be the best to get normal life back
Oh,have you start the PC without your graphic card?Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. I took out the graphics card, tried to boot and got this real odd beep from the machine.

What the devil does that mean?what kind of beep?

No Beeps Short, No power, Bad CPU/MB, Loose Peripherals
One Beep Everything is normal and Computer POSTed fine
Two Beeps POST/CMOS Error
One Long Beep, One Short Beep Motherboard Problem
One Long Beep, Two Short Beeps Video Problem
One Long Beep, Three Short Beeps Video Problem
Three Long Beeps Keyboard Error
Repeated Long Beeps Memory Error
Continuous Hi-Lo Beeps CPU OverheatingeMachines have notoriously poor supplies that frequently take out other components when they fail. This can be quite expensive. With all of the power problems you mention I would FIRST change the power supply to a quality one of sufficient wattage for your needs. (400 w. ought to be fine) If you don't spend at least $40-50 for a quality PSU, you are just asking for more problems down the road. I prefer Antec or Thermaltake from newegg.com, but that's just me.

After you swap in a good PSU if everything doesn't work fine, then a format and reinstall is in order. If you are the original purchaser eMachines will send you a new disk for a nominal charge.

I suspect with these two changes your system will be fine IF the previous power supply did not permanently damage anything. Keep us posted.

Solve : Help with Dell please...?

Answer»

Can a Dell computer use a non Dell modem? Thanks!I DONT see why not but hold up somebody will be along to confirm or advise other wise All COMPUTERS (expect macs) run of a programme called windows.
It doesn't matter what make it is, they all can do things like plug none company things in them. (like a fridge, no matter what fridge you bye, they all do the same thing).

Hope this helps. (you can now sell your dell monitor ((which I wouldn't if I was you, dell make good monitors)) and dell keyboard, and dell mouse with pad, which I bet you bought, and get none dell products, just cause you can) Dells are compatible with any PCI card and any USB DEVICE. If you want to change the power supply you might have to get a CONVERTER for the ATX power connector. My old one (Dell XPS R450) the power supply’s ATX connector had the same format but he wires were different so only a Dell would work. I latter found a Dell replacement and took the old one and installed it in to a standard ATX motherboard. The power supply literally BLEW up in my face.Any peripheral will work fine, like a modem, a CD burner, etc. The basic components - motherboard and power supply are NOT interchangeable due to Dell specific wiring or configuration. If you put a non-Dell motherboard is a standard ATX case the PCI slots will not line up with the slots in the case, etc. There are a few rare exceptions, but motherboards/cases/power supplies should be Dell replacements of the same model.

Solve : Power supply problem.?

Answer»

Ok this may sound a bit strange but bare with me.

My power supply has the twenty four pin connector that splits off and becomes a 20 pin connector for the main power for the motherboard. Now the 4 pin connector was ruined and is no longer usable. My motherboard takes the 24 pin and the 4 pin atx connectors separatly. I tried connecting just the 20 pin connector to the motherboard and the CPU fan does not function and i get nothing on the display. I assume the motherboard just isn't getting enough power.

Here is my question: Since my motherboard only uses 4 pins for the second ATX power connection and not 8 can i use the extra 4 pins (my power supply has the 8 pin connect that can be split as well.) to connect to the 20 pin connector and make up for the ruined 4 pin connector??

Thanks for checking this out and helping me, guys.no would be the answer they have different VOLTAGES to the different connectors. Without knowing the make and model of the PSU and how the pin alignments are advice would be dangerous at this point...Quote from: TehGerg on June 26, 2007, 02:56:13 PM

Without knowing the make and model of the PSU and how the pin alignments are advice would be dangerous at this point...

So it could be possible?

I will find this info out when i get home tonight.I haven't seen any power supply's with two of that kind of 4 pin but i have been wrong before.
Look on the power supply itself there will be a label with the manufacture and the model number. post that up here and we will figure it out from there.Quote from: kevdawg on June 26, 2007, 02:38:57 PM
can i use the extra 4 pins to connect to the 20 pin connector and make up for the ruined 4 pin connector??

Answer is NO. Two reasons:

1. The connectors for both sets of the extra 4-pin connectors are NOT made for the 24 pin slot on the motherboard

2. I checked the AWG and the voltage of each pin and they do not match.

Thanks guys a ton for the help even if you helped me get my mind thinking of the solution!

Solve : blank screen after installing GeForce FX 5200 bx VGA video card?

Answer»

I just INSTALLED a PNY Technologies nVidia GeForce FX 5200 8x VGA video card into my computer. I have an Athalon 1.99 gig processor; 1.5 gigs of RAM; Windows XP Pro with SP2; Syntax Motherboard sv266m with VIA ProSavage DDR KM266 chipset. Someone suggested my motherboard/chipset may not support the GeForce FX 5200, but somwhow I doubt that, but....any ideas? You may want to shut your computer down...and FOLLOW these steps depending on which graphics display you're going to use...onboard or your new one:

There are two elements to disabling an onboard graphics card and sometimes you need to do both before the system will work properly. First, get your system back to how it was without the new card installed..this includes changing your BIOS settings back to normal. Now go to the Device Manager in Windows, right-click the entry for the driver for your onboard graphics card and select 'Disable’ or 'Enable'...depending on which adapter you're going to use. Apply the changes and shut down your PC. Now insert your new graphics card into the AGP port, if you're going to use it...if not, disregard and carry on as if you were going to enable your onboard adapter.

Boot the PC and ENTER the 'Setup’ menu to access the BIOS (typically by pressing [F2] or [DEL]). Go to the 'Advanced Features’ page and select to 'Disable or Enable Onboard VGA’...again...it depends on which adapter you're going to use. The wording and location may vary according to your BIOS, but you should be able to find it. Press [F10] to save changes to the BIOS and exit. Your PC should now boot recognizing your new graphics card and prompt you to install the new drivers for it in Windows.

Solve : front sound jack questions?

Answer»

I'm having some issues connecting the front headphone and microphone jacks on my Asus Vento 3600 to my Intel D875PBZ motherboard. I checked out the manuals for both, and there doesn't seem to be any information on it. If it matters, which I don't think it does, I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card. Any help on the connector location would be grand!I've actually looked at the MANUAL for your mobo and I don't see a header connector for your front mic and headphobes. USUALLY, there is one...but it depends on the mobo. I've looked at the schematics of the board and it SHOWS a header connector for USB connectors 1 & 2, and also the HDD LED, Reset and Power...but no Spkr/Mic. It does show an ONBOARD speaker, but that isn't helping us.

If it's not on the mobo...then you can't do it.

However, the device is not showing up in My Computer or WINDOWS Explorer.

Please help?!?

Many thanks Did you recieve an Hitachi CD with the new drive ? ?
This includes tools to prepare it for use...
Windows will not recognise a drive until it is formatted.
Many drives are shipped this way out of the box.

Boot with the CD in and select format and you should be good to go.
If you didn't recieve a CD the tools can be DLoaded from their site.

Solve : Chaining drives? slower drive compromise speed??

Answer»

Hi all,
Is it still true that if you have two DVD drives if one is slower than the other and you put that drive as the master that it will also slow the faster slave drive down?

Or with technology now does this still happen? I just added a second litescribe dvd burner to my existing computer and because I didnt want to fiddle and futz with the other drive I put the NEW one as a slave. The new drive is faster than the original one, so thats why I asked. Should I make the faster drive the master?

THANKS!
MARK Yes
The faster drive should be master...
Optical drives aren't as sensitive but an optical drive on an IDE channel will slow down a HDD.Thanks for the heads up. The Hard drive is a SATA drive and is seperate from the IDE.

So I remember I read somewhere long time ago that slower drives on an IDE cable with slow down a faster drive.

But if it's only 2 dvd drives on the ide it shouldnt matter?

Thanks again!
Mark No it shouldn't matter. An optical drive and a hard drive on the same IDE channel can be a bad idea because of the huge difference in speed, but the problem just won't arise with two optical drives. I have had a 16x DVD RW drive and a CD writer on the same IDE channel with no problems for 3 years now.

Solve : Cd/dvd drive problems?

Answer»

I have been having some trouble getting my cd drive to read DISKS. So I decided to check out the properties of my cd/dvd drive in my computer. Under the hardware tab I found an unusual drive: WD1200JB-00GVC0. This drive is pointing to the hard disk drive rather than the cd/dvd drive.
I checked out its properties and its not enabled, it is also found in the device manager under "disk drive"

I have tried resetting the properties for my cd/dvd drive to point to the correct path,
however it will not LET me apply any of the changes.

Can someone help me fix this? I have tried unistalling it from the device manager, however when i rebooted the computer, it turned up with "found new hardware"

Is this even related to the problem i am having with my cd/dvd drive, or is that completely separate, EITHER WAY...can someone please help fix these two problems?Quote

what brand/model is your mobo? other hardware specs etc...

What do you mean "it fails to show a display" ? when you start the computer, is there no display at all or are you getting any sort of prompts? is it POSTing? The next week i was in the same store while the same customer argued about the computer not working they said it just CAME up with some blue green writing then nothing, and it was the counter sales person had sold them a dud and they were going to get a lawyer and take them to court.

Solve : Fan Direction?

I have a Powerspec desktop computer, Athlon processor (if it matters). I hadnt cleaned it in a long time and decided it better be done now or never. I noticed that the case fan was completely incrusted with dirt, so much so that using a vacum didnt help. So, I took the fan off and wiped it clean. But when I went to put it back in, I began second guessing myself about which direction the fan needs to go...A dumb MISTAKE, I know, but any help would be great.FYI...nevr use a vacuum to clean ANYTHING inside a computer...use compressed air.

Fan should be label side up...check the sign of flow air in the fan(its show where the fan rotate and how the air flow.If it's a case fan chances are it pulls air through the machine so it should be blowing outward.Quote from: The Saviour on September 08, 2007, 10:52:18 PM

I think we ought to have confirmation from you of whether that fan is at the back of the case or not. If it is, then it should be blowing air out the back. But, if it's located at the front of the case, then the usual air direction is inward, or pulling air into the case.

Windows will load a generic driver for it and enable you to install the appropiate drivers...ok, i done all that and when i power on the computer the monitor never comes out of amber light into green and stays blank. i know the monitor is good cause i am using it now on this computer and i know the video card is good cause i just bought it and tried it on a spare computer i have. i also checked and MADE SURE it was compatable with the mb and monitor...it all checks out but it still stays blank. Here's what I'm thinking. Your onboard video must be disabled or a setting changed in the BIOS. But, to view the BIOS screen, you would need to have your monitor connected to the connector for onboard video. And, since the connector for onboard video has been ruined, you'll have to replace your motherboard. HAPPY shopping. you know that is exactly what i was afraid of...lol thanks for the help anyways...sure was hoping there might have been some trick to getting it fixed. and shopping nay....gonna scrap it. if you see the splash screen then start tapping F8 and enter SAFE MOOD GO to control panel/ device manager and uninstal the OLD video adapter and reboot should then ask for a driver as it reboots
no, no splash screen. cant plug in the monitor into the on board video. that option got destroyed by a angry screwdriver. and intalling the new video card and plugging the monitor into it hasnt done anything. but after sleeping on it i was wondering if there is such a thing as a usb plug and play type adaptor one could use for a monitor?

Solve : Radeon 9700 AIW connecting to tv via S-video?

Answer»

How are you supposed to hook this card into your tv with a s-video cable? The s-vid out looks different than the cable. (fits the tv so I know it's a s-video card). Am I missing a common adapter or something?Have a look at the 2 links below and let us know if they apply to you.
http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review_printerfriendly833.html
http://www.ascully.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=359

-Mikethanks for the reply! I read the links, my apologies, my card turns out to be a 9700AIW series. This is what it looks like:

I'm not sure if this uses the dongle:

like the 9600 does. It didn't come with one, and also it has a s-video in and s-video out right on the card. The 9600 just had the vga out and s-video in that this dongle came with:

Mine did come with one of these, but that only plugs into the s-video in, not the s-video out.

Hope that's not too confusing. My card looks just like this:

only vga instead of dvi. Both s-video (in and out) are identical LOOKING. As you can see niether are standard s-video. I know the s-video in uses that purple THING, but not sure what the out uses.even better pic of the ports:

from left to right: s-vid in, cable in, s-vid out, monitor outPlease
from what i can see it looks like your missing the all-in-one cable not the purple dongle for inputThanks for the reply! That's exactly what I'm missing! Where do I buy one?check with ati i guess , I take it you were given this card and did not purchase it as it should have come with that piece from the manufacture, if bought from a dealer return it .for a complete PACKAGE. the missing piece will only fit that card

Solve : Computer Problem?

Answer»

my pc always appear the error msg the msf is" System has RECOVERED in seroius error" ..every my pc reboot the error will appear..plz give an idea WAT is cause for dat?I would say what you said before; a hardware error. I got the same message whenever my d-link wireless card crashed and i rebooted.

To check...

Graphics card (if you have one, not integrated): Test in another computer

RAM: If you have two or more, just put in each one SEPARATELY. If you have just one stick, look for another stick just laying around somewhere and test that.

Hard Drive: There really isn't a good way to test this, but some top symptoms of hard drive failure are computer lock-ups and the evil "click of death"

Any expansion cards (PCI, PCI-E, AGP, etc): Test them in another computer.

WELL that's all the help I can provide. 1) Set the jumpers on the drive..one set to Master...one to Slave.

2) No...the computer won't be faster.

3) Anything your heart desires.

4) Wow!

5) Yes, it can be done. The usual setup would be to install your operating system on the master and then using the slave for storage. Although the is no reason you couldn't do it the other way around.
The mere act of adding a slave device will not make the computer faster, but if you add a hard drive that is faster than your current then yes it could improve performance.

The size of the hard drives isn't important, it is whether they're COMPATIBLE with your computer that MATTERS. (They probably are though.)
Here is a guide that describes how to install a hard drive.
Installing a PC IDE/EIDE hard drive.
And if you got anymore questions don't HESITATE to ask.

Solve : Win 98 SE...how do I identify my Network Adapter??

Answer»

I have an OLD computer that just won't handle the bloat in some of the up to date op sys. So I have Windows 98SE on it. It flies and the op sys takes very little memory. But while a previously installed version of XP Pro SP2 installed and identified the network adapter in it (and I forgot to write it down) Windows 98SE hasn't. How can I identify the correct adapter and install it. THANKS!I'm not 100% sure, but I think a program called Everest can help you identify this...

The REASON I'm not 100% sure is that I USED this program once to check a specific thing and haven't used it since.

Here is a link to a free version of it:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

The free version has been discontinued, so no updates or anything will be available for it, but still would be useful. If the network adapter is a PCI card, you might ALSO remove it and look for a model number or other identifying code numbers on the card. But, Everest might GIVE you the info you need.

Does Win 98SE show an unknown device in Device Manager?I think it does... But I don't think it's very helpful anyway. Not sure, been so long since I used Win98 heh

Solve : what is an external usb odd port??

Answer»

i have a samsung Q-1 ANAD it has an external usb odd port and i have no idea what it is for or how it can be usefull(obviously it hooks up t or PROVIDES a usb connectiion of some kind Can you give us a picture?
From the SITE - Phone out, DC-in, CF Card slot (Type 2), RJ45, 2 USB, VGAIt's not an "odd port", it's an ODD port.

From the spec SHEET...

http://www.samsung.com/uk/business/b2b/products/notebooks/ultra_mobile/q1.htm

Storage

HDD 8MM, 1.8 SFF HDD, 20/30/40/60/80 GB
ODD Optional
FDD -

It's for an Optical Disk Drive. That port can be used for connecting a USB CD/DVD ROM or burner drive.

description here:-

http://www.samsung.com/Products/OpticalDiscDrive/index.htm

Ah, I see.
I did visit that page but I saw no mention of the ODD port, now I do.
Thanks for clearing that up for both of us.

Solve : Certain USB is not detected??

Answer»

Hello my fellow members,

I have a SAMSUNG D-820 mobile/cell phone. I also have the right usb for it. But when i connect to my pc. Instead of making the den(lowpitch)-den(highpitch), it makes a den(lowpitch)-den(lowpitch) sound. I have all drivers installed and the program too.

Though i have tried this on a friend's laptop and it WORKED PERFECTLY fine.

Specs:

Windows XP Professional 2002 running on Service Pack 2.

Go to your CONTROL Panel, then System, then the Hardware tab (?), then click on Device manager. Look for your phones driver there and see if it says that it's working properly. Thanks Comp Guy. What would i do if it displayed as not working properly? Cause i'm trying to find my USB but what would i have to do?It would display a little yellow allert icon next to the device name.Ok. What do i do to fix my usb connection if it was not working properly? So I assume that the little yellow icon is appearing next to your phone's driver Not sure yet. Still trying to find my USB. I'll post again when i find.Fixed. Thanks Comp Guy for giving me the option to know the Device Manager directory.

Requesting Lock/Delete.lock is better, OTHERWISE you loose post counts. But I can't do it, since I'm not an admit. I think you can, though. It would be NICE to know what you did to fix it...

Oh well...as long as it's fixed...I just did the driver install thing and it searched for the drivers. It automatically installed and just started to work properly. If your problem is solved, just press "Report to Moderator", and then ask for a lock. A mod. will then come and lock it for you.

Or you could simply press "Lock", which is down the bottom near Reply, Notify etc.Done.

Although the DDR2 module is physically the same length as a DDR1 module, the DDR2 module has a 240pin

Solve : Which Cpu is better in my situation?

really it won't work with more than 4Gb. I would have thought it would. So i can still get 4Gb and it will work fast right? Cause my friends selling me 2 Gbs of Ram for like $50 there the OCZ DDR2 800Mhz Ram.And the computer has 2 Gb already on it.Quote from: Calum on June 10, 2007, 02:28:51 PM

XP will not work with more than 4Gb.
4Gb is also overkill for most people.
1Gb is the sweet spot for performance/price, and 2GB is good for almost anyone.

I'm glad you said this 1st, I almost went ahead to 4 gigs and kept reading how people were having ISSUES with that much ram on my MOBO .... 2 gigs is perfect for my lame uses ! Besides, save MONEY for the next upgrade in ram.Wouldn't 4Gb of RAM run SUPER smooth?. I guess if i'm getting 4Gbs of RAM I should use Vista. Even though it's Vista 4Gb of Ram will run super smooth?....Right!?I'm not convinced even Vista is optimised for 4G of RAM....

What MBoard are we talking about here ? ? ?Just go with 2Gb and save the money, it's the easiest, cheapest and most trouble-free solution.

Solve : Video Card fan noise?

Answer»

Hello,

I have no old computer (5 years) and I needed a USB 2.0 card in order to uplink to my wife's Ipod. I had only one slot left, just below my overly large Geforce FX graphics card. Everything was fine for a few days, except now I hear a buzzing sound coming from the video card that I beleive to be the fans.

Before I go out and buy a new fan (the video card is too expensive to replace), is there a chance this problem is caused by not enough space between the two cards(ie having trouble cooling)? Or is there a method to vid card fans so they clean better?

Let me know if there's anything else I should try first. Thanks. Try the steps detailed here to clan out your PC and fans.
If that doesn't help, try taking the USB card out - is the noise still there? Is that video card in an AGP slot or PCI slot? How many PCI slots do you have? Could you rearrange cards in a way that might allow better airflow around the video card? Could you replace that video card with a fan-less one, maybe a used one from EBAY?

Does your USB card extend out so far that it COVERS most the the video card, including the fan? I have a USB card in a PCI slot. It only has two USB ports on back, so it's not very wide.SO, I take the USB card out, and the sound goes away.

I have an old dell, with one AGP and 4 PCI ports.

IN the AGP I have a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra (which is just massive, and 'hangs' low)

In the 4 PCI ports I have:
1) wireless connection to my router
2) sound card
3) ethernet card (2 + 3 connected by powercord)
4) My USB card

The USB card is about the smallest card there, so mixing and matching isn't going to change much. I'm also starting to wonder if the Geforce card is 'leaning' on the highest card when it's in, which creates the problem.

Any thoughts?Never mind, check that.

Ran the computer for an hour without the USB card and the noise has started up again. IT's only one of two fans on the video card, but I guess I should just go buy a new fan tonight.

Well, let us know how it goes when you replace the fan.

By the way, what's "ethernet card (2 + 3 connected by powercord)" mean? Why do you need both this and the wireless card?

Did you clean out your PC yet as suggested?1) yes I did clean out the card. Very dusty. Was a little quiet intially, but as the machine heats up it continues to get louder and louder (even without another card nearby). If you stop that one fan, noise stops.

2) Yes, for some reason there is a cord connecting the sound card and ethernet card. It seemed weird to me, but I'm a novice at this stuff. I guess I should get rid of that card....

I've purchased a Zalman VF700 copper fan, it seemed to have reliable reviews on ordering websites. It should be in town monday. Yeh, I think I'd remove the ethernet card; I see no need for it, since you're not using it for your Internet connection. Removing it may allow a little better air circulation. Carefully remove the cord connecting it to your sound card and remember how it's connected, in case you need to reinstall it. If your computer mis-behaves without it, you can put it back in. Update: I removed the ethernet card without any problems.

I got the fan in, but have realized that NONE of my screwdrivers quite fit the screws in the GPU. Rather than force anything, I think I'm going to wait until I make a small move next week, where I have an uncle who work in computer tech and loves to put things together in his free time.

I'm currently keeping an active watch of the temperature of my GPU. With a few basic programs open it's running at 46C. As long as I keep use to basic programs, and I'm around to make sure the temperature stays low, is it dangerous to keep using a noisy fan for the enxt week? (ie will the fan die or cause damage to another part of the vidcard)?

If nobody responds tonight, I'll start a new post.As long as you can MONITOR it fairly close, and it seems you can, you should be OK until you meet with your uncle. What model is this Dell and is it the original power supply?

I have an old (about 6 YRS) HP pavilion mx70 monitor with an Internal mic that just stopped working one day, the person on the other end can hear static and a bit of voice but no more...any reasons or ADVICE would be appreciated and anything I might be able to do to fix It? I have tried blowing out the mic with COMPRESSED air and that did nothing.Do you have a SOUND card plugged into your computer? If so, there should be a port for an external microphone in it. Solve : Upgrading GPU, etc...?

Answer»

I have a system built in 97 RUNNING Win 95. I want to upgrade this computer for a gaming computer if I can. Scan disk tells me there are bad sectors and that the hard drive may soon fail, otherwise all is working. I tried to run dxdiag to get basic information to work from but no luck. Is there an easy way to get the specs on this system?Honestly, it makes absolutely no sense to think about upgrading that computer, especially for a gaming machine. It's ten years old! In human years, it's a centenarian. BASICALLY there is nothing you can upgrade on it anymore.. All the slots will be ISA everything now is pci or pci express. The ram has gone through 3 generations since then pc 133 ddr and now ddr2 instead of pc 100 or maybe even pc 66. The hard drive is at most 5400 rpm drive which now is standard 7200 rpm and SATA 1 or SATA 2

So what i am saying is BUY a NEW pc don't even consider upgrading it. Not what I wanted to hear... but ThankyouYeah, go for a new computer instead, what has been said above is all too TRUE unfortunately.
Maybe you could sell that one for a little cash.
If you want help with the upgrade, post back with your max. budget, what games you play and so on and we'll help you out.Very little cash. You could donate and feel better about it.Quote from: GX1_Man on June 26, 2007, 03:25:01 AM

Solve : hard drive help?

Answer»

I have a 500 GIGABYTE maxtor external harddrive. I used it last about a month ago and then packed it and put it away. Now, it won't show up when i connect it to my computer.
I have two years of work on it... it is doomed??? what can i do to retrieve my INFORMATION??? HELP!!!! Try it on a powered USB Hub.
Or better yet if it can be removed from it's caddy hook it up to an IDE cable internally with it jumpered as slave.
Can you hear/feel it spinning up when it starts ? ?And after this is resolved you will know that a hard drive is NEVER a wise choice for the only copy of IMPORTANT files. Back it up to removable media as well.
