Solve : trying to connect old dell laptop?

Answer»

that is running on windows 2000-that i forgot my password/admin to- to my regular COMPUTER with windows xp on it using wizard file sharing to add xp and overide windows 2000. But cannot connect because wizard requires wizard to be running on both COMPUTERS and does not show connection. how can i connect both computers? when laptop is STUCK on login screen? dont care about losing information on laptop just want running again. You can get a recovery cd that can reset the password for the UID. Check out ebay.the wizard does not require it to be run on both pc's concurrently.

You can work AROUND local passwords, but if you are, and i supspect you are, referring to a "network" login, your out of LUCK.

Solve : How to check all connections??

Answer»

Hello

I would like to KNOW how I can check all my connections that are currently active on my computer with the internet. In-going and Out-going connections.
I've heard this is possible on your router.. but not all?
Is there any program that tells me how many and what CONNECTION i currently have with the internet?
And ALSO to see if there is any other computer currenlty connected to mine?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Solve : One computer can’t access my computer while everyone else can.?

Answer»

Problem…
I recently installed a new XP Professional computer on the network. I am TRYING to access a Vista computer, which everyone else can access even another XP computer. The new XP computer is a reinstall from a previous installation that was able to connect to my computer.
Everyone can access the XP computer, but he cannot access my computer, and only he cannot access my computer…

I have tried over a dozen fixes, registries, Winsock Fixes, resetting int IP, tried even a new Ethernet card, and it is still not working…
I need some help because this is just getting frustrating for me and I am about to drop kick it out the window…
Can anyone help me?At another person request I installed a PROGRAM called “Network Magic” and it made things even worse, I couldn’t connect to the internet, It said that nothing was connected to the router, and windows said that I didn’t even have an Ethernet card.

I am forced to reinstall XP. Hopefully it is a good install and hopefully Network Magic didn’t cause any permanent damage (which I highly doubt it did) to the Ethernet card. That were was nothing wrong with the other PC, it was my PC... instead of just turning off all sharing, and DISABLING everything I have shared, I turned and disabled all sharing, restarted (most important part I guess) and logged back on, everything like MSN, Groove, and Windows Live MAIL, all the passwords were reset and I had to type all the information again... strage as it sounds, I re-enabled all the sharing and it WORKED just fine...

So I suppose it's all good...

I'm just glad the Ethernet card I was using wasn't the one on the main board, it was that I had switched out to see if it was something wrong with the onboard ethernet controller...

Although it was a very good card it was a little out-dated.

Solve : workgroup not accessible??

Answer»

i have a home network with one desktop running xp and two laptops (one vista and one xp), connected via a belkin G router. All 3 computers can connect to the internet and my isp effortlessly. But we can't share anything else on our network - even though FILE and printer sharing is ON and firewalls are adjusted accordingly. I have created a workgroupbut every time i search for it from any one of the computers this message pops up:
XXXX (workgroup name) IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THE NETWORK RESOURCE. CONTACT THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS SERVER TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE ACCESS PERMISSIONS. THE LIST OF SERVERS IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE'
Anybody know what that means? The workgroup has clearly been identified but I'm not allowed to access it. Am I the administrator, and if not who is? Is it my ISP?
all advice gratefully received.Have you joined each computer to that workgroup? yes each computer belongs to the same workgroup and they all share the same ip address. They just dont see each other. Like I said they can all connect to the internet but not to the workgroup or to each other. Firewalls are off when I try to connect. This is driving me (and the family) crazy.

Hai,

Some network files are missing or corrupted. Please see the given below link.

Regards
GopinathDid you mean the same ip address, or same network? ip addresses must be unique within a given network. If they are all the same, they won't be able to COMMUNICATE. they need to be in the same ip range, but must be different(make the first three OCTETS the same, and the last one unique).

Solve : Should I disable the network SPI??

Answer»

Hey EVERYONE,

I would like to DISABLE the SPI. Is it RECOMMENDED to disable it. SPI is a firewall for a network layer. How do I disable STATEFUL? SPI=Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall for a network layer on ROUTERS. My router/modem combo is Linksys WCG200. Does that router have SPI?

Solve : Cannot see other computer in workgroup?

Answer»

At the moment, I cannot see other computers on the network, nor can they see me.
Please help me to 'see' my computer and to allow other computers on the network to see my computer too.

If I click on > Windows Explorer > My Network Places > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup = I get a message that reads:

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out is you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

If I click on ‘Search’ and search for ‘computers’ [My computer is called jen] I get:
Jen in ‘workgroup’.
If I click on jen in the search box I get all the drives and folders on my computer.

From the command prompt window, I can ping the router and both computers by IP address and by name.
1. What operating systems and service pack levels are your workgroup computers using?

2. Computer Browser Service. On Windows XP, people frequently complain about not seeing the "other" computers and their resources. This has to do with the "Computer Browser" service. At least one of the computers on the LAN (the one that's powered "on" most of the time), should have the "Computer Browser" service running. It will build and maintain a "master" list of the other computers in your workgroup, so when they go to look at "My Network Places" this list can be sent to them without having to build one from scratch for each request. Not positive, but I believe it will only show computers that have the service for "file and printer sharing" (i.e. "Server") installed and enabled (running).

3. Reference(s) (primarily for Windows XP):
Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network?
Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft WindowsI am running Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2. I have a Netgear router [the other computer in our Network is also Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2].
We both connect to the internet through the router.
I was getting an error message: YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THIS NETWORK RESOURCE: But having altered the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa to 0 [from 1] I find I can 'see' the other computer on the LAN, but it cannot 'see' my computer and if I try to access the computers from the workgroup, that window is empty.
Very elusive!
Please advise.1. Registry Key. I'm not familiar with that registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa", so for now I'm going to ignore it.

2. I'm not sure whether you're trying to establish "File and Printer Sharing" or "Computer Browser" functionality on your network.

3. File and Printer Sharing. I assumed you had configured both machines for file and printer sharing. I believe the "Microsoft Windows Network" and "Workgroup" will only display computers that have been configured to share network resources. You don't have to actually share a file, folder, or printer but you do need to enable "File and Printer Sharing" which kicks off the Windows XP system service "Server" among other things.

Are these Windows XP installations members of a "Workgroup"? The same workgroup?

Are these Windows XP installations setup for "Simple" or "Advanced" File Sharing?

The Microsoft references I've provided on "File and Printer Sharing" and "Computer Browsing" are excellent easy reads on the subject. You'll never find a better explanation. If you review and follow the material (store it in a safe place); you shouldn't have any problems in this area.
Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows

3. Back to the Problem. Access via Start-Run. From first computer try to access the network resources of the second by:
o Click Start, and then click Run.
o In Open, type "\\IP_Address" without the quotes (of computer whose network resources you wish to access), and then press ENTER. What happens?
o In Open, type "\\ComputerName" without the quotes (of computer whose network resources you wish to access), and then press ENTER. What happens?

Repeat the process, this time from the second computer to the first. What happens?

If you can successfully access the network resources of both computers via "Start -> Run" (ASSUMING they both have resources to share); then the basic components of "File and Printer Sharing" are operational.

If not, then there's more work to do. LET us know. I have done as you suggested in 'Run' and the results are as follows.
I can access both computers if I type in the IP address [ie \\192.168.....etc]
BUT
The message I receive when I type the name of the computer is:

Windows cannot find 'jen'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

However, when I do a search, I can find this machine in 'workgroup'.
Can you advise please?
Many thanks.
nabbers1. Workgroup. Are these Windows XP installations members of a "Workgroup"? The same workgroup?

2. Simple/Advanced File Sharing. Are these Windows XP installations setup for "Simple" or "Advanced" File Sharing?

3. TCP/IP Configuration. Do both computers receive their TCP/IP configuration dynamically from the DHCP server in the router or do you statically assign these parameters. Are they both on the same network, e.g. "192.168.1.x", with the same subnet mask, e.g. "255.255.255.0".

4. Possible name resolution issue?
Quote from: nabbers on July 31, 2008, 02:03:51 AM

The message I receive when I type the name of the computer is:

Windows cannot find 'jen'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Does this HAPPEN in both directions? When you Start-Run "\\jen" from the other computer and when you Start-Run "\\OtherComputerName" from jen?

Can you successfully "ping" both computers by name from each other?

If you're using a static TCP/IP configuration, you could use an "LMHosts" file for NetBIOS name resolution (see Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network?) or possibly a "hosts" file; but you shouldn't have to.

5. Host Firewalls. Are these computers using host firewall software? If Windows Firewall, enable the "File and Printing Sharing" exception and reboot to see if that helps. It may take ten or twelve minutes for the Computer Browser to discover the other computers in the workgroup.

Better option while troubleshooting would be to drop or disable all host fireware software, reboot, and see if that makes a difference.

6. Computer Browser. Ensure the "Computer Browser" service is running on at least one of the computers (the one that's always/usually on).

Quote
To check the status of the Computer Browser service on a computer running Windows XP, do the following:
o Cllick Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
o In the details pane of the Services snap-in, double-click the Computer Browser service.

Startup type should be set to Automatic and the Service status should be Started.

Verify Client Computer Configuration

When troubleshooting the client computer, you need to verify the following:

o That the Client for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled on the network connection connected to your home or SMALL office network.

o That the Workstation service is running. If it is not, check the system event log for errors and information about why the Workstation service did not start.

o That you can ping the server computer by its IP address and its name.

o That the client computer is not using TCP/IP filtering, which might be preventing response messages from the server computer.

To check whether TCP/IP filtering is enabled, do the following:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

2. Right-click the network connection that corresponds the network adapter attached to your private network, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab, double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the This connection uses the following items list.

4. On the General tab, click Advanced.

5. On the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, click the Options tab.

6. Under Optional settings, click TCP/IP Filtering, and then click Properties.

7. To disable TCP/IP filtering, clear the Enable TCP/IP Filtering (all adapters) check box, and then click OK.

Verify Server Computer Configuration

When troubleshooting the server computer, you need to verify the following:

o That the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled on the network connection connected to your home or small office network.

o That file sharing is enabled.

o That the Server service is running. If it is not, check the system event log for errors and information about why the Server service did not start.

o That the server computer is sharing the desired folder or printer.

o That if the server computer has ICF enabled on the network connection attached to the home or small office network, then service definitions are defined to allow incoming file and printer sharing traffic.

o That if the server computer has Windows Firewall enabled, then the File and Printer Sharing exception from the Exceptions tab of the Windows Firewall Control Panel applet is enabled.

o That the server computer is not using TCP/IP filtering, which might be preventing response messages from the client computer.

o That the guest account is active for network connections.

In User Accounts (available from Control Panel-User Accounts) the Guest account is off by default. However this setting only applies to the ability to log on the local computer using the Guest account. Simple file sharing relies on guest access to shared folders and printers. To verify that the Guest account is active for network access, do the following:

1. Log on to Windows XP with an administrator account.

2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

3. In the Command Prompt window, type net user guest, and then press ENTER.

4. If the account is active, a line appears in the output of the command that states Account active Yes.

5. If the account is not active, type net user guest /active:yes and then press ENTER.

6. Type exit and press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.

Solve : Unstable internet??????Only connects to one thing at a time?

Answer»

I have a Westel Model 6100 modem that sends my 768k verizon dsl to my Linksys wireless G broadband router model wrt54gl. The problem with the westel is that one computer that is wired is connected to it with a Usb that came with it, and it seems to WORK when the wireless router is not plugged in USING an ethernet cable. When I take one internet plug and then put it back in then restart the westel mod, the internet plug that didn't get unplugged works and the one that did get unplugged doesn't work any more. On the the computers, they are using wireless, say that the wireless is still working but the internet is not. Also, last night, the internet on wireless worked for the whole day til' around midnight, then didn't work the rest of the night. I think because my parents used to have the linksys, they set it up to turn it off at 10 at night and work again at 7 in the morning. But it is on a different isp and how would it know what time it is? I just want it to be able to connect to the wireless and wired together. I tried just plugging the wired compter into the wireless router, but it didn't connect, it just kept saying aqquring network connection.

I need HELP!

If you need anymore information just say so.

thx

That sound like my son try to get around the router restriction I have LOL

It seem like your parent know their way around the router setup which is good in a way .......now just because you have changed you ISP, that doesn't mean you router setup had to be changed totally......the only thing on router has to be changed is the (user name and password to your ISP's account and may type of the connection [cable_or_ DSL]...other then that it's all has to do with Router policy setup (if you parent has changed to limit your access then you are out of luck).

CheersI'm not familiar with westell and how they do business.....but your ISP should not but limiting you to one computer (specially since you go through a home router)........I would go to the router setting and see if there is any limitation in place of any kind of MAC address filtering setup!!

Cheers
I have a westell modem for my DSL from centurytel (my ISP) and I use a linksys wrt54g wireless router. The way I have mine setup is:

1. Phone line coming from phone jack on the wall into the DSL modem

2. I use an ethernet cable and go from the modem to the internet port on the back of the router

3. then I use an ethernet cable and go from the 4 port switch on the back of the router to the desktop computer and connect wirelessly on my laptop to the router. Yours should be very similar. I do not go from the dsl modem to any computer. Just from modem to router then router to comptuer. You could always reset the router that way its back at factory settings and you should be fine. DSL uses a pppoe connection which is programmed in the modem itself either by you or your ISP and if you did change ISP's and are using the same modem from your previous then you will need to go in the modem with its ip address..my westell is 192.168.1.1 same as the default linksys routers and change your username and password to what it is now with your current ISP. After you reset the router you WONT have the problem with a timed scheduling your parents may have set for you anymore and you can go into your router with 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and use the default username/password in the box that prompts up with username field empty and admin for the password. The only thing you will have to do on the router since your dsl modem is your pppoe connection you wont have to change it to a pppoe in the router but if yall have a secured wireless connection where you put in a network key when you try to connect to it wirelessly then that will have to be put back otherwise other people can connect to your wireless access point but if this doesn't bother you then I wouldnt' worry about it.

How I have mine hooked up

1. Phone line to dsl modem

2. Ethernet cable from modem to router

3. Ethernet cabel from the 4 port switch on back of router to desktop

4. laptop is connected wirelessly to router

If you have a different setup other than this you might try CALLING your ISP and talking with their tech support and he/she should be able to walk you through how you need to have everything connectedanyone still here? My problem still isn't resolved...... You tried using an ethernet cable to go to your computer instead of usb cable?yeah, but it doesn;t connect don't worry. I fixed it.

Solve : want to increase my wifi signal?

Answer» OK i FINALLY GOT my neighbors to let me use there wifi but im not getting that great of a connection are there any antennas or software that i can buy to give my laptop a BETTER signalNot really...as far as your connection goes with their wireless access point a lot of it would depend on how far away you are from them or what the signal strength is. However, there are some NEAT tricks you can do to their wireless router(I take it that they are using one) to increase singal strength or the range of their signal.

Solve : Problems connecting to networked computer?

Answer»

So I recently bought and setup a WRT54GL router and installed Tomato for the firmware. However, I'm finding it impossible for me to do sharing. I can set up FOLDERS on my computer to be shared, and can access them on my girlfriend's computer. However, I'm unable to access any folders that she has set to shared, and I'm unable to access her shared printer as well. Am I missing something completely obvious?

We're both running Windows XP. We're both plugged into the router and, as mentioned before, she can access my shared files.

I also TRIED running \\(mycomputer)\c$ from hers and it connected. Again, not vice-versa.1. Windows XP what? HOME Edition or Professional? Original, SP1, SP2, SP3?

Solve : Xbox 360 Can't Connect To Live Through Hardware Firewall (smoothwall)?

Answer»

Short: Xbox 360 can't connect to internet, fails at MTU, Firewall seems to be the problem, CHANGING MTU values on interfaces of firewall does not fix it

Long: So, here I am in a new apartment and we are setting up a new network, the topology is as follows:

CABLE modem --> Firewall --> switch --> Linksys WRT54G with DDWRT --> XBOX 360

The connection between the ROUTER and 360 is wireless.

When I test connection to XBOX Live, it fails at MTU....every time. Last year I tried a similar setup with a different 360, only that one took the WRT54G completely out of the picture. The 360 was connected directly to the switch. The same problem, 360 Live test fails at MTU. So we know the WRT54G is not the problem.

What does work: If I connect to XBOX 360 to the switch, then directly into the modem, not using the firewall, and it worked.

So, the switch and WRT54G are not the problem, the firewall is the problem. I have tried changing the MTU values of both the red (connects to modem) and green (connects to switch) interfaces to 1492, 1400, and of course the default 1500. Still fails at MTU, every...single....time.

So, what can I do to try and get this fixed? Microsoft was so help at all, they said nothing more than "You have an incompatible networking device" which is a bull**** excuse.Someone elsewhere was able to dig up a forum post that lists ports that needs to be open, that are not LISTED on Microsoft's KB article on what ports the Xbox 360 uses. If you have this problem, this is what you need to do:

1. Set a static IP for your Xbox. In my case it's 192.168.10.50 and it's on my green network, and I set the IP on the Xbox itself.
2. In your Smoothie, under Networking click on the Incoming tab.
3. Forward ports TCP/UDP 88 and TCP/UDP 3074 to the Static IP set for you Xbox.
4. Under the Outgoing tab, allow ports 88 and 3074. (When you allow ports on the Outgoing tab, it automatically allows both UDP and TCP ports)Thank you for posting that information.

Though I dont have any use for it, it will definitely prove useful to someone.

Solve : My broadband internet connection keeps dropping.?

Answer»

Comcast has been here at least three, perhaps four or five, times to address our internet troubles. Basically, we can't seem to stay connected to the internet. It is cable broadband internet, and we have to power cycle endlessly throughout the day in order to get any kind of connection, and often that is short lived. Typing this now I do not know how long I'll be able to stay on. Sometimes the connection lasts under 10 seconds, sometimes a few minutes, occasionally as long as over an hour, and sometimes even power cycling will not restore the connection. Here are some stats:

The modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5120. We had a different modem prior to this one, with the same problems. I don't REMEMBER what that modem was. After we switched to this modem the internet seemed to work properly for a few days (less than a week) and then the same problems, maybe worse.

I'm trying to get to the modem's setup page in case anyone needs stats from that, and while I was able to get there before, it now says "Problem loading page."

We're using a Linksys WRT54GS Router.

WINDOWS XP Service Pack 2.

Once, or perhaps twice, I got an error message regarding an IP address conflict with something else on the network, but the IP address is automatically assigned and those problems passed. Haven't seen that error message in a while, so I don't want anyone to get too hung up on it, but in case it's important I wanted to mention it.

When Comcast last came to look around they said the outside line was damaged (they fixed that) and they weren't so sure about a line in our crawlspace, so they fixed that too. Without calling them out again immediately, since they've been here a lot (and every time we call for assistance on the phone they just want us to power cycle it, and then are convinced the problem is solved because the modem temporarily comes back on), is there anything else anyone can think for us to check out? Any other fixes? I'm sure other info will be needed so just let me know and I'll try and get that to you.

Thanks!

P.S. Almost forgot, generally when we are unable to connect to the internet, the power light is solid, the receive light is blinking, PC activity light is solid, all other lights are off. Sometimes the power, receive, and PC activity light will be solid and the send light will be blinking, but typically it is the former.

EDIT: Allow me to add that, now that I've tried to underplay the significance of the conflicting IP address error message, it came up again just a little bit ago. Hmmm....Is this the setup for just one computer?
Did you try Windows repair?I haven't had internet access at all so Comcast had to come out again, and now they say that the power levels were not so good, and they changed our cable and OBVIOUSLY I am now online, so hopefully this will be the end of our woes.Upgrade the Linksys router to the latest firmware @ www.linksys.com/download

1. Once you upgrade to the latest firmware or if there is no firmware upgrade, you need to perform a factory reset by holding in the reset button for 30 seconds located on back of the router, you will notice the routers lights blinking. Then wait about 2-3 minutes while the router syncs back up.

Note: The factory reset will erase all previous settings, so you may want to write down your settings as you will have to enter the settings back into the router.

You do not need the CD to install the router, You can set it up manually.

1. Just open up Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1
2. A Linksys sign-in box will open
3. User Name = (leave this blank)
Password = admin

i'm not using a modem..... i'm connecting to a wi-fi signal with a wireless card. The laptop i'm using is doing the same with no problems and my other computer in my daughter's room too. we have THREE computers with the same setup and only my main desktop is having problems. It started with the windows update that messed up zone alarms back on july 9th. I read up on the update and decided to get RID of zone alarms all together. But now I still can't access the web.Quote

...coming from where? A neighbour?

I'd also try to reinstall the latest ZA version (disable Windows firewall, if this is what you're using), and see, if this will fix the problem.either a neighbor or the business park nearby. And I can't seem to find my zonealarm disk that i had or my windows xp disk. Go figure huh. Is there a way that you can try to connect with my computer and see if you can find anything wrong with it?Quote

Not really, but we're having an issue of stealing someone else's internet connection, so I don't think, I can help you anymore.
It's most likely against this board rules.ok WELL thank you for your help.Sure thing I do have a question though. i live a block away from a starbucks and a library in the other direction. both have wi-fi hot spots. If i'm connecting to either of them from my house.... is it any different from taking my laptop down there to connect?
This is the only idea, that comes up to my mind:

well i would but i've lost my disk.... I'll just go buy ANOTHER copy tomorrow and see if it works. Thanks for the help though.Isn't ZA firewall free, or you had a whole suite?yeah i had prook... another question. I just went to add/remove programs - add/remove windows components - internet information services and clicked world wide web services and tried to continue but since i don't have my xp disk i can't. Solve : windows xp problem when using wireless card?

Answer»

I have a dell latitude 610 computer and just started using a wpc54g linksys wireless card adapter. I have a linksys wrt54g wireless g broadband router that I first was hooked up to via a ethernet cable that is hooked to my HUGHES satellite modem and it worked fine. When I installed the card it would not recognize the router. I used the easylink advisor that is set up on another laptop to add this dell, it told me to connect it with a ethernet cable, and go online per the instructions of the easylink advisor and download a program from the internet which I did. After this it was able to acess the internet through the wireless. But when I shut the computer down and tried later it would not connect to the router. Called Linksys and was told to go to the wireless network connections under wireless tab and check ,use windows to configure my wireless network settings, after checking this box it will connect to the router. But EVERYTIME I shut down my computer and resart I have to go through the same PROCESS because it is not saving the command. Can you tell me how I can get it to save so I don't have to do this everytime.Iam using windows xp. Any help would be appreciated. There is likely a piece of software that came with the wireless card, or your notebook that is automatically running on startup and changing that setting.

I would check and see what software is running with a name like "linksys configuration utility" or "Linksys wireless configuration" or something similar. Many Dell computers also ship with wireless cards included and have their own "wireless configuration" software.

You may need to remove this software to prevent it from making this settings change, but before you remove it just prevent it from running at startup. If that solves your problem you can delete it, but by testing it first you save yourself the TROUBLE of having to reinstall if its needed.

You can test out preventing it from running at startup by using MSCONFIG. Just go to Start, RUN and then type in msconfig.

Click on the tabs and uncheck WHATEVER you do not want to run.

Solve : TTL Expired in Transit?

Answer»
I had a question regarding ping command that we GENERALLY use to check connectivity with any computer or
network DEVICE like routers. But sometimes we GET reply from a different IP address not from the one we try to ping. And also get a messege TTL expired in transit.

Can anyone please let me know when and why do we get this messege TTL expired in transit?

TTL means:
Time To Live.

Microsoft says:
Quote
Error Message:

TTL expired in transit.

Explanation:

The TTL value determines the maximum amount of time an IP packet may live in the network without reaching its destination. It is effectively a BOUND on the number of routers an IP packet may pass through before being discarded. This message indicates that the TTL expired in transit.

User ACTION:

Increase the TTL value using the -i parameter with the ping command.

Solve : Wireless Router Help?

Answer»

I'm having trouble setting up a new Wireless router. My internet(DSL) works fine without the router, but I can't seem to get it working with the new wireless router. Here are the specifiactions on my hardware:

DSL Modem:
Westell Model E90-610014-06

Wireless Router:
Linksys "Wiresless-G Broadband Router with speed booster"
802.11g
Model: WRT54GS

I insert the installation CD, follow the instructions properly, and when it gets to the fourth step where it says "Waiting for router", it hangs for a few minutes, and then tells me that my router is not setup properly. Though, both my DSL modem(Which is detected as a "Router") and Wireless Linksys router have their online LIGHTS on and steady.

My PC is doing as if it is ATTEMPTING to connect to the internet; the icon with two computers in my system bar(Vista) is flashing, and when I hover over it, it says:

Quote

Network 5:
Access: Local Only

Network 3
Access: Local Only

My laptop can also aquire a wireless signal from the router, but I can't access the internet. It says "local only" for it as well.

My setup:
I have an Ethernet cord going from my computer to one of the FOUR ethernet ports on my wireless linksys router used for wired connections. I have my phone line plugged into my DSL modem, and an Ethernet cord going from my DSL modem into the ethernet port on my wireless router that's labled "internet". Both the DSL modem and router have the "Internet" lights lit up, so I assume it's setup properly.

Then, if I pull my ethernet cable from my wireless router leading to my computer, and stick it back in the DSL modem, my internet kicks back up and works fine.I would check your IP setting on the working computer and match your router to them.

Some ISP's require you to use specific IP settings, in order for your router to work properly it would have to be setup with theses settings as well.

You can access your routers settings by typing its IP address into your browser. The default IP address is usually something like 192.168.1.1 you can find the exact one for your router in the PAPERS that came with it or on the MANUFACTURER website.

Also you may want to try power cycling everything once you verify that the IP stuff is setup properly. I know it sounds stupid but sometimes router issues like this can be solved by power cycling because it clears away the stored IP information and allows the router and the modem to detect eachother and get new IP's from scratch.

If only this trick worked on my refridgerator... when it is empty I can not simply close and open the door to find it stuffed with food and beer.

Solve : Server, and work stations problems!?

I work for a small Day care center. We have a Dell Power Edge 840 SERVER, four work station CPs, and two time clock TOUCH screen work stations for the parents to sign in and out. We also have a problem with the time clocks; both of them "freeze up" at 3:50 PM every day and have to be re-booted.My tech guy is at aloss for an answer to this problem. ditto

as a temporary work around, you could set the server/pcs to reboot everymorning automatically...The event log shows no errors or anything else suspicious. We've de-activated all the updates, backups, virus scans Etc. and still have the problem. We suspect there's a mapping problem. the two touch screen work station's event log does show warnings for the exact times we crash. The ERROR message reads "windows fax".

Solve : Disconnecting a router completely??

Answer»

I have a netgear WGR614v9 modem I received free from Virgin Media, but I just don't use it at all, so I want to disconnect it completely and just go BACK to using the ethernet connection to the cable modem.

The problem is I just can't work out how to get back online if I connect my modem straight to the PC.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of help online for disconnecting a router, it just seems to be all about setting ONE up.

I use windows XP SP3, and I have a core 2 duo with 1GB Ram.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.shutdown your computer, shutdown your modem, disconnect the RJ-45 ethernet cable from your router to your pc, disconnect the RJ-45 ethernet cable from your router to your modem, attach that cable from the modem to your computer where the
cable was from the router(to you network card)...power up your modem and wait till it syncs up(all lights are ok)....now turn on your pc...when it's up you should be all set...!!!

Good LuckThanks a lot for your help.

I did what you said, and I was still having problems, and then I thought I would have a fiddle with the TCP/IP settings.

I set it to FIND everything automatically, and then waited about 5 minutes and it couldn't find the network ADDRESS, so I disabled the network connection, then re-enabled it and it now works.Quote from: lostinsanity on February 03, 2009, 08:03:39 PM

Solve : Wired router for media device/wireless for internet Please Help?

Answer»

I have a router wired to a media device. I am trying to get my computer to look past that router and connect to the internet wirelessly. The computer goes to the wired router first, which is not connected to the wireless router. The set up looks something like this:

Living Room:

Computer --- Wireless router

TV Room:

Computer----wired router-----Netgear Media MANAGER----HD TV

It would be very difficult to run a cable to connect to the wireless router, which is why I hope to be able to maintain wireless connectivity.

HELP PLEASE!!!Quote

Computer----wired router-----Netgear Media

You get a thing called an Access Point. It kind of looks like a wireless router, but only has one Ethernet plug. You plug it into you wired router. But for a few dollars more, just buy a wireless router.

But maybe you really like your wired router. Maybe it has great features. OK. In a pinch, you can put up any old a used wireless router and trick it into being an accuse point. Netgear says that can work. You turn off DCHP and it is like an access point.
Geek...

I am not sure I am explaining this properly. In the TV room, when the wired router is off, I have internet access, but no access from the EVA 8000 to the computer. With the router on, the EVA 8000 has access to the computer, but no wireless internet. What i WANT is wireless internet connectivity and simultaneous connectivity to the EVA 8000.You have another networking device on the computer?
Code: [Select]WiFi PCMCIA --->Computer----wired router-----Netgear Media Manager----HD TVDoes that represent what you have? The diagram you can does not show how the TV room computer GETS internet with the router is OFF.The computer in the living room is connected to the wireless router. The computer in the TV room connects to the internet wirelessly. I have the wired router connected to the computer in the TV room to allow communication with the media device which is also in the TV room. The wired router in the TV room is NOT connected to the internet, just the media manager.Quote from: wgl333 on February 02, 2009, 06:55:50 PM

With the router on, the EVA 8000 has access to the computer, but no wireless internet. What i want is wireless internet connectivity and simultaneous connectivity to the EVA 8000.

Basically, you want the EVA 8000 to magically connect to the internet through the Router, through the wireless NIC on the computer?

The only way to do so would be to use the Computer to bridge connections between the wifi and the Cat5 wired network, by connecting it's Ethernet to the WAN side of the wired router, and the EVA 8000 to the LAN side. However, the EVA 8000 will not be able to access the computer itself since it is not technically on the same network as the EVA 8000, which is itself on the subnet afforded the wireless NIC.

the best option would be to connect the EVA to the wireless router wired (assuming it has both wired and wireless connectivity) otherwise purchase a new router that does.

Dealing with a single network is enough of a pain in the arse- having subnetworks and trying to communicate between machines on different levels is like falling through a building. the more levels you FALL through- the more painful it ends up being. No, I want the wireless internet access strictly for the computer. The computer feeds the data to the EVA 8000 through the router, so therefore the only internet access needed is through the computer.OK. Let's see if we understand.
About the computer in the TV room.
Is you computer in the TV room a laptop?

You have a computer that will lose internet when you have a router?

Your computer in the TV room has internet when the router is OFF.
That same computer can not get to the Internet when the router is ON.

The computer in the TV room has an Ethernet port that is wired to the router.
That same computer has another network device that gets into the internet.
Is that device a USB? Another Ethernet?

Has me stumped.

We need to know what device is used to get o internet. It may have an IP conflict with the router. And the router refuses to budge.
The wireless router is the internet connected one, the wired one is used to connect the media device thingy to the computer. I believe they want to simultaneously use the computer to access the internet and still allow the device(s) to access the computer via the wired connection. The computer in the TV room is accessing the internet through a Belkin Wireless USB adapter. When the router connecting the media device is on, I cannot connect to the internet as the computer is looking for the connection through the wired device as OPPOSED to the USB device. I assume it is an IP issue and am looking for guidance in solving. The easy way out of this is to install Network Magic on both computers. This is a Crisco product and works on other routers as well. You can get a free trial and that can help you understand what kind of configuration you need to have.

http://www.purenetworks.com/

If you find it helpful, you might even want to buy it. It is a clean product and does a proper un-install when you need it. But it will nag you like your mother if you do not have the hardware set up right. The program will say 'unplug router ' 'reset you computer' 'comb your hair' and so on.

Solve : Dropping internet connection??

Answer»

I use a D-Link DGL-4300 ROUTER and have a desktop upstairs, desktop in the basement, along with a Sony PS3 and Xbox 360. Optimum Online is my ISP and I have a Surfboard 4200 cable modem.I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. The other day I lost my internet connection and have not been able to get things back online. I have UNPLUGGED the power to the cable modem,SHUT down my PC,then plug the power back on the cable modem. It cycles through power light, receive light, and send light are all solid green, when it come down to the online light,it just keeps on flashing. I was able yesterday to get it connected, but lost the connection once again. It's ben driving me crazy and I do not know what to check next. The support people will drive you crazy until you do this.

Un hook everything. While you have things complicated they will blame you.

Put it back together with just the modem and one reliable PC.
Go do the power off and power on and reboot and reboot thing a number of times. Three should be enough.

Call the ISP people and tell them to fix the modem or replace it or you are going with another company. ( The problem can be in the line or cable. The mode, is telling you the line/cavle is bad. either the line/cable is bad or the modem is bad.)

Sometimes the local phone/cable company does not do the job. Nobody wants to increase capital investment now.

I am going to TRY to connect the modem right to the PC when I get home and see what HAPPENS. I was able to reset this last night and had a connection. Went to use the computer after dinner and it dropped it again. Thanks for the help.

I use a Netopia gateway. I know it's different for each type but a GENERAL idea would be nice. open cmd and type Code: [Select]ipconfig /all
type the IP address GIVEN after gateway, into IE or FF and you should be in your ROUTERS setup page. somewhere in there will be the history of the router.

FBThanks but I already know how to GET into my router page. Thing is I can't see anything about router history when I get in there. What heading would it go under?Look through the routers manual, physically or on the manufacturers page. It may be that the router doesn't have a history, mine doesn't.

Solve : Other-PC-to-INet through my connection?

Good Day/Night.
Please tell me in detail how do I connect NEIGHBOUR (in LAN) computer (using XP Pro) to InterNet through my connection?
REM I've checked the box asking if I want to share my connection to others, but when ESTABLISHING new connection on the other machine (potential client) I can't find any option to perform it. I've been trying, I guess, all of choices, but... Sorry to bother, I know how does it piss, but it's a dead end for me. Please HELP! Thank You.Is your neighbour is the same building? Are you thinking of a wired connection, or wireless?

What type Internet service do you have, cable or DSL? Do you have a ROUTER?

What OS is running on all computers invovled in this scenario? Hello. Sorry that you had to ask those questions...
Well, let's go.
1. Yes, we're in the same room; I have wireless connection to INet;
2. DSL; router (if you ment our LAN switch/hub) is present;
3. On both - WinXP Pro SP2Quote from: Archer on January 21, 2009, 11:58:37 AM

I've checked the box asking if I want to share my connection to others, but when establishing new connection on the other machine (potential client) I can't find any option to perform it.

this isn't clear. Do you just want to get both computers on the Internet, or do you want to enable file sharing and/or printer sharing?

You don't need to setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), where one computer connects to the Internet through another computer; this isn't necessary since you have a router. I'm guessing your router has 4 ports on back so that up to four computers or devices could be connected to it by cable. And, in addition, your router supports wireless connections. So, if Internet access for multiple computers is your objective, you don't need to setup ICS in this CASE, just connect both computers to the router via wire or wireless. Quote from: soybean on January 22, 2009, 02:14:59 PM

this isn't clear. Do you just want to get both computers on the Internet, or do you want to enable file sharing and/or printer sharing?

Well, like I told, I'd like to connect other computer to INet using my wireless Internet connection (which, in fact, I'm using right now). Sharing files is not a problem.
Both of computers ARE connected to the router.
When establishing connection I'm being asked some questions like of the name of provider, his phone numb, type of connection etc. And I've not seen any question allowing to use LAN member's connection instead of remote (regular, so to say) provider. And it keeps asking for modem I do not have on the second machine.
By the way, maybe it was not all clear about my connection (I know that's not all). I'm connected to INet using my own modem. Our network has no providers, and actually we cannot get to the INet at all. It is my personal 'exit', which I want to share.
Maybe I should know more about Proxy-server stuff?
My router is 12-port. I do not encounter any problem to transfer data between all LAN members. 'Wireless' corresponds only to my own INet connection which I already have.
Maybe I just can't explain all I want; sorry, but I'm not that good in English. But hope You could understand my quest_s.Well you don't need to do that and I am not sure you want to do that.
However if you would like the other computer connect to the Internet through the wireless
interface try:

1.) buy a separate USB adapter for the other computers
2.) set up a software bridge on where you have the wireless network card installed.

Solve : Internet Connection keeps dropping?

Answer»

Hi guys. I have another problem and you guys haven't steered me wrong yet ... so here goes.

Let me start off by saying that we are not on wireless. My internet connection keeps dropping. I have internet access for a while, then it suddenly drops. When I use IE7's Diagnose Connection Problem tool, I get ONE of two errors, (1) a problem with the winsock catalog provider and I need to restart my computer and (2) I need to contact my internet account provider.

I'm on cable and I know that the internet connection is fine, because I have no problems at all with my laptop's connection. Any ideas or suggestions on how to remedy this problem? Thanks for all your help!when the internet drops...go to run and type in cmd.

a dos box appears...1. type in 'ping 4.2.2.2' without quotes(that is a DNS server on the east coast) if you get replies then the connection is GOOD. if you don't get replies then 2. type 'ping 192.168.1.1' (or whatever your default gateway is) did you get replies. if not, 3. type 'ping 127.0.0.1' to check your network card.

if you got replies with '1' then type in 'ipconfig /all' check the DNS addresses and compare to your laptop. sometime the DNS settings get messed up.Ok ... I tried that. When the internet wouldn't "connect", I was still able to ping 4.2.2.2 and 127.0.0.1. Since I was able to ping both, I went into cmd and typed "ipconfig /all" like you recommended. THINGS worked well for about a day, then ... no internet again. This is getting really irritating. Any other ideas? I really do APPRECIATE your help. But can you ping 192.168.1.1 or something or you can check with this command at the "dos prompt"

type in ipconfig and it shows something similar:

Quote

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : xyz.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

write down your Default Gateway number and ping it and try if you
can get any reply.

Solve : File sharing problem?

Answer»

I am helping a friend SET up file and print sharing between his two Vista laptops. The laptops are identical and both are running Vista SP1. I went through the WHOLE file sharing procedure, with no password required. I am sharing the entire C: & D: drives. When laptop #2 tries to log into laptop #1, the user name and password box comes up and I put in the user name & password for laptop #1. It shows both drives and allows them to be opened. But, when laptop #1 tries to access laptop #2, the name & password box comes up, I enter the information and it takes me to the list of shared drives on laptop #2. I double click drive C: and a message pops up saying "Windows cannot access \\laptop #2\c - Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose". When I click Diagnose I get the message "c" is available but the user account that you are logged on with was denied access". Laptop #1 can access the Public folders though that are Laptop #2. I have tried entering the name and password of Laptop #2, Laptop #1 and Everyone with no password. My first question would be why is it requiring a name and password when I have turned off password required. My second question would be why can I use the name and password for Laptop #2 and see the folders, access the public folders but get the error message when I try to access Drive C. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. I am at my wit's end. That is a common problem.
STOP. Do not share the root. Share a folder, but not a root.
A root is C:\ D:\ and so on.
Do the network thing over again.
Each computer MUST have a unique name.
Each Computer must have two administrator accounts. (Or more.)
The two accounts are on both computers.
Example:
PC1 has users Bill and Jame.
PC2 has users Bill and JANE.
ALL passwords are set as: 2bad4U (Or something you can remember.
Reset the machines. Try again.
Have Bill log into both machines reset.
Have Jane log both machines reset.
Now try again. Try to 'find' the other machine.
Make the sharing is full for both users.

We are not sure why this works. It is from an unpublished Urban Legend.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried what you SAID but it still doesn't work. Thanks for trying to help though.

Solve : Can you setup a firewall (Hardware) on a single computer??

you would need to run a wireless Access Point also.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124012&Tpk=WAP54G

modem would connect to Router/firewall (BEFSX41) then that would connect to Access Point (WAP54G)

You say "you would need to run a wireless Access Point also" because that router he mentioned is a wired router, right? If he gets a wireless router, then the wireless Access Point is not needed. Why buy two devices when one will suffice? Quote from: soybean on January 31, 2009, 07:27:36 PM

because he wanted a hardware firewall + wireless and linksys does not have a combo one as far as i know. another company may but i don't know of one because i use linksys exclusively in home installations (i know there quality and never needed to warranty one out).

i've solved a number of network problems by switching out D-Link and Netgear products with Linksys because the others were bad (BTW they were less than a one MONTH - six months old).My point is that the router provides firewall protection. THEREFORE, a separate hardware firewall is, IMO, not necessary. I believe nearly all routers provide firewall
From http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WRT54GL:
Security Features:
# Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewall, Internet Policy
# Wireless Security: Wi-Fi Protected Access™2 (WPA2), WEP, Wireless MAC Filtering

And, of course, that can be combined with a software firewall for even better protection.

From http://www.firewallguide.com/faq.htm:
"What is the difference between a router with firewall features and a hardware firewall? Features and price. Lower cost products provide a DHCP server, PAT/NAT services, 1-8 physical ports to network computers and/or wireless service. NAT hides your computer(s) from the Internet which makes it a simple but effective firewall. Higher cost products, but still under $200, provide additional features like built-in stateful packet inspection (SPI), support for Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), content filters, anti-virus protection, and more."

Hmm, I've been using D-Link routers since Jan 2002, first a DI-604 and now a DI-524 (wireless), and they definitely provide hardware firewall protection.

So, again, I don't see the need for two devices. A wireless router should suffice. Ditto.well my experiences with D-Link are different.

Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewalls can be spoofed. where as the model i listed has anti spoofing and other technologies.

also, a person should always use a software/personal firewall wether or not he has a hardware one.Quote

So when it comes to a firewall, go all out with hardware and software firewalls, but as far as wireless authentication is concerned, leave it completely open? SSID broadcasting is only the easiest way to find an access point. especially in the case of unencrypted wifi, their are tools that can simply analyze airborne traffic and determine SSID names in the area- since each networked device needs to know it. simply using that SSID in a connection request will yield success.

change the 'network name/SSID'
change the default PASSWORD (both the wireless AP and router)
enable MAC filtering (only allow the MAC addresses from your network cards)
enable Encryption (WPA/WPA2)

you may be able to get away with 'do not broadcast' on your network as well.

most importantly...read the directions that come with it. they tell you how to MAKE it secure. people have problems with their wireless networks because they don't read the manual.

where in here did i ever say to ONLY hide the SSID and put no other security in place? i don't see it.

Solve : network keeps disconnecting?

Answer»

I have a wireless router (Belkin) and a wireless laptop card (Linksys). The internet just disconnects randomly, and then when it does, I cant even reconnect as that wireless connection no longer shows up in my list of available networks. I can only reconnect if I go to my modem and router, turn off the power and then turn them back on abo9ut 19 seconds later; somehow the network is FOUND again.

Why does this happen and how can I prevent the network disconnections> My router and modem is on the 2nd floor while my laptop is on the 1st

The OS is WinXP This is probably a PROBLEM with your router, have you downloaded the latest firmware for it?i checked if they had an update for the firmware. There is no update

It may be a problem with your line, when you get disconnected from your router does the 'internet' light go out on your router. If it does ring up your ISP, explain the problem and ask if they can run a line test.My friend has a similar problem. His connection OFTEN disconnects with no warning, and goes on and off. It really ruins our gaming! He recently FIGURED out that this only happens when his father's laptop is currently running though. Is there any advise you guys can give to help figure out this dilemma?I have noticed though that the internet connection only drops when I start using P2p (I uses ARES)

Why does this happen?
i have a belkin router and a Linksys card. Do you think maybe its the brand difference that might be causing these frequent wireless disconnects? Just to reiterate, these disconnects happen only when a P2P application like Vuze (used to be CALLED Azureus) is running.

Do you think I should get a Linksys router to match my card or do you think I should get a Belkin wireless card to match my router? That is, if you think, this will fix the problem

Hi all!

I'm TRYING to set up a peer-to-peer network with my old HP computer running Windows ME without a router.

The cable is connected to each NIC card, the IPs are set in Control Panel, but I keep getting "Network cable unplugged" ERRORS on my XP laptop, the one I'm using now to type and to access the internet, which I want to share with the other computer as well.

I've done the Network Wizard on both computers and still no dice. Can anyone troubleshoot this please? Would be great to get these computers running on the Internet!!

Thanks in advance.

Solve : ip help.?

Hello I would like to change my ip but not sure how to, I dont know if I am doing something wrong or if I just change. I have Comcast High internet for starters and I am using a laptop. Could someone please tell me how I can change my ip and walk me through with some steps? ThanksWhy do you want to change your IP?

As far as I know there is nothing wrong with changing your IP.

You will find[Llink Removed] very usefull.Actually Ivy, we need to know why......

I've removed your link because it may be used with bad intentions. How so?I was talking with my friends over the internet and one said he changed his ip. He has dsl and said its easy. He can do it by typing commands in the cmd. I tryed but I don't have dsl so it didnt work. One guy said I can do it to and said to download a program and change your MAC address, I did but it didnt work. I am at the put of trying to change my ip to see if I can do it, lol. Right now I dont think I can and it BUMS me out kinda. Did I use the MAC program wrong?

In all, I just want to change my ip just to known how. lol To see if I can. Really no reason other than learning.Dude, why bother so much....Just GO to google and type 'How to change my IP' the first link that comes up is the *censored* lol.I tryed them all and they didnt work for me. I really think the only way is to call up comcast and ask them to do it, lol. But I won't go that far because everyone says its so easy to do it. If its so easy, why cant I? hahaahCome on!!!!!! It's easy!!!!!! Just call your ISP and tell them to do it for you,and to LEARN you'll have to keep trying ........can't say more since the respectable mod Carbondudeoxide doubts your intentions!!Well I cant prove this is not for any bad reasons or good ones. You would have to take my word on it, but I guess you wont. I won't call my isp to change my ip. The HASSLE of waiting on hold, then finding out comcast wont do it for some reason. Even if they did change it, it would defeat the purpose. I wanted to learn how to do, not have another person do it for me. I get a new ip and what now? I got a new ip..... If I LEARNED how to do it, then I learned something new that might help me later on in the future. Change your MAC address? Is it not built into your hardware? I don't think you can change it.

Anyways, we cannot confirm what your intentions are, and even if your intentions were justified this is a public forum viewable by anyone.

Sorry bud.Carbon is right. You can not change the MAC address as it is a ROM chip on the network card.

Alan <>< and there is no good reason to change your IP, unless your trying to be deceitful towards something that knows and prevents your IP- such as a forum or a government block.

If your using a router then your router has your WAN facing IP, and your PC has a network address with regards to the router, so changing your IP there would likely confuse the router. a Router, though, can be made to mirror a MAC address you specify- mostly for the use of using a internet connection setup previously with a single computer.Ok why would you want to change your MAC address unless your doing somthing you shouldnt.

For your IP address I will tell you how to change your local IP address (the one on your home LAN)
goto "start/Control Panel/ Network connections" now right click the connection that you are using and select properties. now select internet protocals TCP/IP an then select properties. select the setting which says "use the following IP address" then simply fill in the details.....If you don't know any thing about TCP/IP then just leave it

oh and your friends were only renewing there local IP address not there external IP address this can be done by going into command promt and typing ipconig /release and then ipconfig /renew but there isnt much point unless your testing your network settings

hope this helps

Solve : How to improve our network??

Answer»

I would like to get some suggestions on how we could improve our network. We are moving towards virtualization when our brand new server arrives, and then we'll be able to consolidate a few of our servers. I want to see how we can make this more EFFICIENT, reliable, and just improve on our CURRENT setup. This is what we are currently working with:

One thing that I would consider doing is pushing down windows updates downstream to the clients, and I was thinking about roaming profiles, but we don't really have users moving around to different computers. We maintain images of our client computers instead, and they store their documents on a shared drive. What are some other way we might be able to make improvements?Hi Barnicle,

There is a lot going on now in the industry, as you know. Frankly, I don't think there are many IT pros that hang out here. I could be wrong.

If I were you, I would join a user group or forum on the Crisco web site. And on one of the forums that are part of the Microsoft Tech support.

Visualization is a big thing right now. But it is not the same thing as reliability. Some will try to sell it to you as more reliable. Well, in this industry few times has anything very new been very reliable. Be careful about making changes and not improvements. It is hard to know exactly which part of the system will fail. You might think it would be the servers. Until rodents in the crawl space eat up your nice new Ethernet cable because is was so tasty. That sounds funny. Right? But if it happens, it is no joke. Replacing the wires can take over a day. Not that wireless is a better solution. It is not.

Maybe there are some here who will share their ideas.
with regards to virtualization...are you talking "virtual desktops", 'virtual resources' or 'virtual platforms'. i've dealt a little with the last using VMware and Linux with Windows running on top of it. i've seen Windows running on top of Novell also. if the OS CRASHES you basically just restart the OS but it is still a crash.

in your diagram i see 2 firewalls are they dedicated firewall servers or multipurpose servers?? i don't see a DHCP, IIS, print, etc. do you have those?? do you actually have 2 ftp servers?? i can't read what the 3RD firewall icon has under it.

just a few prelim questions.
what OS's are you running on the servers and workstations??
how many workstations?? domain servers?? member servers??
how many PRINTERS?? do the print jobs get backed up??
how many users?? how many IT??
are you a parent domain, child domain, or is there just one domain??
are terego and pathaway other sites?? do you need to control them also??

are you looking for speed, availability, both??

are you running RAID systems?? if so, 0, 1, or 5 and on which partitions and servers.

"One thing that I would consider doing is pushing down windows updates downstream to the clients". i would suggest SUS (Software Update Services available from MS website) and Automatic Update. that would get all approved OS updates to your servers and clients. be sure to set 'install only approved updates'

is there a reason you want 'roaming profiles'?? it takes up bandwidth.

it would normally take an hour or more to find exactly what you want, what you have and then figure out how to do what's needed.

The need to do that went away about ten years ago. At least for home computers. You have to use the IPs that the router or modem want you to use.

It would help if you would give some detail. But not too much.

Some people have a set up like this:
A DSL modem going to a Wireless router. The wireless router really lavs Ethernet ports plus a built-tin wireless. The computers are connected either through the Ethernet ports on the router, or by the wireless connection.

When you first set up the router, at least one computer has to be directly connected to the router. The first time the router does the setup for you. But you have to answer a few questions.
To make changes to the network you have to be able to get to the router again. The instruction manual gives you information about this. There is a specific IP you have to invoke to make changes to the router. I think on mine it is 192.168.0.1 but that will not help you unless yours is the same make and model as mine. Look in the manual. The manual may be on the CD.

Major MAKERS of home network equipment provide goo tutorials on the company WEB site. One of the big ones is Crisco. The even have a software program that can help you. And it is free to try for a few days, even if you are not a Crisco customer.

hello again

yep, its just the one computer upstairs on a wireless connection, with the wireless router downstairs.

I can get into the router easy enough, but its actually knowing what to do or how to go about troubleshooting the "limited or no connectivity" message.

But the last few days have been bad, its says "cannot renew ip address" then you try again and again, and then suddenly everything seems fine and then it connects no problem.

Turn the computer back on again, and your back to the same problem "limited or no connectivity" the router doe's not even show up in available networks, and when it doe's and you click on repair it will then come back with "cannot renew ip address"

I am pretty layed back, but this is testing me Yeah. Me too. I had that for a long time. Got some other router and wireless devices and did some different things and now I get a very strong signal.

The router I use now is a 2-Wire DSL modem router and wireless all in one. It is perfect. Just the first time you start it up is thinks about it a bit, lets you connect, then after awhile does a reset. After that it trusts you. It almost never breaks the connection. Once in awhile I turn it off, wait, and turn it on again. I don't want it to get bored. It was pricey. $80 from the phone company. But I was sick and tired of the flaky Motorola modem that could not make it even half a day and it would need a half hour break.
Most likely you have a dead spot where you place your router and computer. Try moving one or the other. Bear in mind, this is microwave stuff. A few inches is a wavelength. Move it two feet and the path is different by several wavelengths and the propagation is totally different. You know how fussy UHF TV is on rabbit ears? The microwave stuff is even more sensitive to slight changes in placement.
If you can not fix it that way, come back here and I will share some other tricks with microwaves. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 29, 2009, 07:42:20 PM

1. Maybe there is something that interferes with your Wireless device. My guess is the device in your computer is failing and has lost its ability to reject interference. The remedy is to replace it.

2. This is a chance that some kind of 'malware' has got into you system. I do not mean to say that the malware directly attacks your wireless, but rather the malware 'insults' the system. And that creates instability.
Insult: to affect offensively or damagingly

Removal of the malware and a re-install of you networking and devices should ccure the problem. If that is the problem.

In either case:
Just buy another Wireless device, from another manufacturer. It likely will solve the problem. And the old device will work good in another computer. And we will never know why that appended.

Solve : Connecting two PCs?

Answer»

I have them connected through a BASIC router. I want to transfer some of my music from limewire to Itunes. The Itunes show that it recognizes the connection and is listed in the shared music, although no music is in there. I have tried add the new folder to library, but when I CLICK on the other PC it prompts for a account name and passowrd. I have tried typing in the account name for the computer admin and its password, to no prevail. What other password and/or username could it be searching for besides the admin one on the laptop? Thats the only account on the laptop besides the GUEST account.

Appreciate the help. Im pretty stupid when it COMES to computers and had orginally just planned to burn all the music to CDs and transfer it accordingly, until I noticed they had a connection togetherHave you tried going the other way with the transfer, from the one that has to the one that doesn't?

Solve : Repeated Disconnections on both Wired and Wireless Connections?

Answer»

Information:

RCA cable modem (PROVIDED by cable company - works fine).

D-Link Wireless Router WBR 2310

S/N F30Z181035579
P/N BWBR2210ANA..A1

IC: 4216A-WBR2310

Network: 2x wired (main desktop computer and Playstation 3) + 2x wireless (laptops).

Problem:

I've had a long history with this problem and I am at wit's end with it. When I first set up my wireless and wired network with an old Linksys wireless B network, I had no problem. However, when I upgraded to Wireless G with Linksys I began to have the problem that has plagued me over three routers and now has started up again. The problem is as followed:

Approximately every two-six hours, I am disconnected and reconnected rapidly. This breaks the connection to anything I might be doing at the time on instant messengers, downloads, games, et cetera. It is very troublesome. The boot takes only one second, but it forces everything that is connected to internet to restart. It was far more FREQUENT on the Wireless G router from Linksys, but has recently come back on my D-Link router which originally did not suffer from this problem.

Once again, this has not been resolved either through switching routers. Also, I even have switched out cable modems in the mean time and it has not solved things. Firmware, also, didn't seem to do anything. At this point, I am wondering if it is something related to power or something (even though all my other electrical equipment on my computer and elsewhere run fine).

What can I do to stop this? It is extremely troubling and excessively annoying.

Thanks in advance. No one has any insight into these problems at all?I suppose there is no help to be found.Use your LAPTOP next to your router so you can keep an eye on it, next time you notice the connection drops check that the light on your router that represents the internet connection is still lit up (this light is usually labeled 'internet' but can have a symbol instead) you need to be sure you catch this though because if this is the fault you may find the internet has disconnected and re-established before you notice the effect on your laptop. If the light does go out then your router is being disconnected from the internet and means it's probably a problem with your ISP, if your getting this problem with all routers then this is likely the case, I would advise switching ISP but not until you have eliminated other possibilities first. Are your router drivers up to date?
Some ISPs are just simply useless and can't handle all the CONNECTIONS they claim they can causing your connection to be dropped every now and then... I remember I had a similar problem with AOL and TRIED everything under the sun the to fix it, as soon as I changed ISP the problem was gone, never to occur again. If it is an electrical problem do you have the modem/router on a UPS?

Solve : Connecting with wireless?

Answer»

Hi,

I reformatted my COMPUTER and now I can't seem to get a connection with my wireless modem. When I type in ipconfig it says media disconnected, in the network connections panel my LAN connection says network cable is unplugged. ALTHOUGH, the connection had previously been working before I reformatted so nothing was unplugged. Also tried power cycling my modem and that doesn't work either.

OS: XP

What computer do you have (model number).

Go to DEVICE Manager and list all the items with question marks or exclamation marks.hp pavilion a1630n

and can you explain the other part a BIT BETTER Right Click My Computer and go to Properties.
Head over to the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager.
In Device Manager, look for any Yellow Question or Exclamation Marks and tell us what they are.

Solve : STATIC IP ADDRESS?

Answer»

Greetings to the Group - Here in the Philippines, our DSL provider's DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS with a 2MB connection is usually bad on a good day and off prime TIMES, so we opted for their STATIC IP ADDRESS, which has helped a lot. My son's XBOX 360 would lag terribly before but did connect to XBOX LIVE to play his games with his buddy. Now, with the STATIC IP ADDRESS, he can't connect with the same buddy at all, but did connect to someone else. So, why was he not ABLE to connect with his regular buddy now using this STATIC IP ADDRESS, when he was able to before with the DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS? The connection to XBOX LIVE seems to be fine and he does connect and get on LINE. All input is appreciated.

Frogfrom the xbox forum:

go to your router and port forward or DMZ the static IP Address

Good Luck

I have an HP laptop and the wireless connection does not WORK. I know the settings are messed up, just do not know how to set them so the wireless will connect. I know I did try to adjust the setting and I can't remember why, but know the commuter says the strength is good but does not connect.

Solve : puter?

Answer»

I have the same trouble with my desk top in my garage, I have local connection, good signal strength or better yet my speed is 1.0Mbps most of the time limited or no internet. Once in a while I will have 18 Mbps plus, but not very often. This just started a while back and it is very frustrating because I pay EXTRA for faster DSL SERVICE but can not use it. My laptops seem to have no trouble at all like this so can anyone tell me what GIVES? I can connect my cell phone and get a faster internet connection is the SAD part.Desktop, or laptop?
How is it connected to the internet? Wired, wireless? Router involved?

Try This:

BEFORE you connect directly to the modem....unplug it...plug in your COMPUTER which is TURNED OFF...

now plug in the modem and WAIT until it syncs(lights are all ok), then turn on the computer...

but it sounds as if you have an issue with your router setup maybe...

Solve : wireless-G worked better than wireless-N?

Answer»

I just purchased a wireless-N (D-Link DIR-615) router along with a couple "N" adapters (one is Trendnet TEW-624). I have my xbox 360 wired to the router to stream my media through my Media Center Vista PC. This worked relatively good with my old "G" router, it was a little slow at times. I thought going with the "N" technology would increase the experience but apparently I was wrong. Is there something I can do to increase the performance? Also, I was using remote desktop the other night from my laptop to one of my pcs in ANOTHER ROOM and it was rediculously slow also. Any suggestions?

ThanksHi:

There are alternatives to stream media to your XBOX 360 without WMC, like TVersity(Free) and Playon( free for 14 days, $30 to keep it) the last one includes video streaming from HULU, You tube and Nextflix. Also with the new XBOX 360 update, all you need is to setup your media sharing on your Window media player, which also support AVI and some DIVX's.

In WMP this what you need to do:

1. Click the arrow below the Library tab, and then click Media Sharing.
2. In the Media Sharing dialog box, select the Share my media check box.

Here is a link with more info about this matter:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/7391bdc3-3767-4f98-9

Now in order to access your media with your XBOX 360 all you need to do is to go to your Video, Music, or picture Tab on your Dashboard.

I have TVersity on one of my other machines, it worked fine for about 10 minutes then it crapped out. I was just listening to music and then it would pause for a minute, and then start again, then pause, then start and eventually it just stopped. With my "G" setup I was streaming live TV.WELL, have you try just using your WMP to stream your media? If TVersity is giving you PROBLEM, try to disable it and use WMP instead. It works really well in my XBOX 360. Check your internet speed, sometimes it slows down and all you need to do is restart your modem.

I use this link to check my internet speed when I feel is slow.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Now give WMP a try, make sure your firewall is setup correctly:

This link tell you how to setup you firewall:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/default.mspxthanks, I ended up just hooking my "g" router back up and using that SOLELY for my media and using my "n" router for my internet.Great, I glad you fix your problem!
