Solve : Installing multiple ages and types of printers?

Answer»

Hey Everyone,

I am not very advanced when it comes to computers but I am working on it.

So in my office I have two computers one like 5 years old ( windows XP) and one thats 1 year old with xp pro.

My printers are as listed : HP LJ 5n ( Older
HP deskjet 1120 C
HP DESIGN Jet 500 ( colour plotter)
Lex mark E220
Brother MFC 8460N

So.don't laugh but when I want to use these printers I have to get on my knees and physically switch the CORDS on the back of my computer ( sometimes 10 times a day)

How can I make all these printers accessable to both computers and maybe my laptop at all times without changing and wires. I think the two old HP's only take the parallel cords?

Thank you

Well, frankly, I'm wondering whether there's really a technical need to use so many printers; it seems rather BAZAAR. But, anyway, the two printers that require parallel ports are the main problems, right? Do both computers have a parallel port? If so, why not connect one of those printers to each computer? Printer sharing would allow using each printer from either computer. If you don't have this option, then I suggest ADDING a parallel port to one of the computers. This can be done by INSTALLING an add-on card such as Rosewill 2 port Parallel (SPP/PS2/EPP/ECP) Universal PCI card Model RC-304 - Retail. If adding such as card is added to a computer with a built-in parallel port, the additional port should appear in Device Manager as LPT2; the built-in port is LPT1.

The other three printers can be connected via USB, right? So, even if you don't have enough USB ports to leave them all connected, connecting and disconnecting is much easier with them. And, again, you should be able to spread these USB printers among the two computers as a solution to avoid connecting and disconnecting. Or, if that's not an option and you need more USB ports on one computer, then, again, an add-on card could be installed to add USB ports. For example: Rosewill 4+1 VIA USB 2.0 Add On Card Model RC-103 - Retail.

Solve : Is this my ISP issue??

Answer»

Hi fellas, long time no SEE. Seems like everyone is alive and kicking

I recently switched to a new DSL ISP which is relying on a PPPoE connection. I finished setting up the modem with my account username and password and the internet started working but whenever I try to use my router to connect to the internet I have to manually enter my ISP account username and password. Only then it authenticates and connects to the internet.

My question is, shouldn't the router pick up the ISP account information from the modem and AUTOMATICALLY share the connection without me having to enter my information again? As this was how it used to be with my previous DSL ISP where I only set up my account information in the modem settings page once and that was it. As soon as I hooked up my router I was able to browse the net.

Moreover my WIFI enabled devices are able to locate the router and connect to it but can't connect to the internet. I'm guessing due to this same account login issue.

Can someone suggest a COURSE of action? Thanks in advance! Most routers do not default to PPPoE, so check that first.Well I'm not completely sure that my ISP uses PPPOE connection so is there a way to find it out what kind of connection I have without having to call them? You'll need to GET into the router & set it up for PPPoE as well.

Alan <>< Thanks for your reply, I figured it out.
My ISP uses PPPoE so I had to put in my ISP account information in the modem setup page and in my routers PPPoE section.
Next I restarted my modem, router and computer and everything seems to be working fine EVERY since. Thanks for letting us know

Solve : Wireless on latop turned "off"?

Answer»

Hi everybody. I'm having a problem with my laptop wifi. Most laptops have a wifi on/off switch, however mine does not have that (Sony Vaio AR150G). Sometimes my wifi will suddenly turn off, so then usually I just restart my computer and its back to normal. However today it continued to be TURNED off. I checked my network devices and saw that everything was working properly, can ANYBODY please help? I am currently WIRED up to my router.

Also an off note, but just need some help, A couple days ago my computer stopped recognizing my battery was inside my laptop. I have a desktop replacement, so I just keep it on my desk the whole time. I'm ASSUMING that my battery died. Is this true?Whoops I forgot to give my information:

Vista Home Premium (real)
Intel Core Solo 1.83GHz
1.0gb RAM
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
AVG 8.0

Erm ask if any other info is needed.
check your FN KEYS. laptops sometimes have it set up on the fn key instead of a manual switch.

If you cant find it, post what make/model of laptop you have.unfortunately there is no FN key that does that.

Sony VAIO AR150GSorry guy, i'm a HUGE idiot, i couldn't see the tiny little switch in the corner of my laptop, so everything's working out fine... wow i'm so blind.Stuff happens...

Solve : Can't enable security on wireless network.?

Answer»

I know very LITTLE about networking and computers in GENERAL, so i'll try to describe this as best as I can.
When i try to connect to the wireless network at home (through laptop, winxp sp2) I view the different wireless networks available to me (there are others around) and i select my own. However, all the others have a little lock icon, they are password protected. My own home network says: "Unsecured wireless network".
So i try to secure it. I went to advanced settings, wireless networks, *my network* properties, association, and network authentication. Selected Open (not sure why, i think i read that online), then WEP and put a 5 letter/number network key.
Regardless of what i do then, once i click OK it remains "unsecured wireless network", and when i check the settings again I see they had returned to data encryption "disabled".
I don't know what's going on, or really how to password-protect my network, I didn't think it would be this complicated.
ps. there are 3 other laptops connected to this network, we all have admin privileges i think.
Thank you for the help, and sorry for the really long post, i just tried to be thorough. What you'll need to do is configure your router with the appropriate settings.

Who is the manufacturer and what is the model number of your router?

Some great reading: Setting Up a Home NetworkLinksys BEFSR41
----
edit: I have a netgear (wireless firewall router wgt624) attached to the linksys router, so that both wired and wireless can be used. (the netgear router was a later addition). this might complicate things.

edi2: I figured i could change the settings on the wireless router to enable security features, but since i have 2 routers, the IP 192.168.1.1 by default connects to the wired linksys, not the netgear. How do i get to the netgear settings?Linksys provides all the information you'll need in order to configure your router properly...as well as secure it.

Please visit the following links: EasyLink Connect

Link to your product page: BEFSR41

Pay close ATTENTION to the guides on the above page which will instruct you in the proper way of configuring your router based on the type of internet connection you have.

Actually the procedure is quite simple to do...

Simply login to your router's settings page. You may/may not have set a new password when you initially did this...so you may want to change your password, once you've logged into your router.

The next steps will be to setup WPA and assign a network key in order to secure your router.

Once you've accomplished the above...all you need to do is save your settings and your router will now be secure. Those who are able to see your wireless connection will not be able to access it...unless the possess the key you assigned in the above procedure.

I hope this information has helped...please keep us posted...Firstly thanks for the reply. I looked at the pages you linked.
Unfortunately (as i tried to mention later in the edit) the linksys router is wired, the netgear is the wireless router, so the easylink connect program says my router is not compatible for wireless settings.
I think if I could connect to the netgear router i could change the settings, but the IP 192.168.1.1 automatically redirects me to the linksys router. I'll look online if netgear has a program link linksys's easylink connect, but is there any other way to redirect the IP? both companies mentioned in their FAQ pages they use the same IP.

edit: Sorry for so many edits, but I'm working as I type these posts. I should probably wait until I reach a conclusion, but oh well, here i go: The IP for netgear is different (it said it on the back of the router, 192.168.0.1)
I changed the settings, and now everything seems to be working, with a password!

Thanks so much for your help and quick responses SAVIOUR.
Al You're welcome...

So, were you able to secure your wireless network?

Your original post referred to your Linksys wireless connection...not your netgear router. Why use two routers? Doesn't that Netgear router have 4 ports on back for wired connections?

BTW, WPA is more secure than WEP. So, use WPA if possible.

Solve : Recommended system configuration to use web conferencing in a large scale?

Answer»

What is the recommended system CONFIGURATION if we want to use web CONFERENCING in a large scale? RIGHT now our systems slow down considerably as more and more users join in the meetings. By 'SLOWS down' do you mean the conference itself slows down or the computer slows down?

If the computer slows down, it is probably because the computer is trying to process all the DATA sent by the other computers.

If the conference slows down (I.E. video), it is most likely the internet connection.

Solve : How to unblock a blocked Internet access in a networked pc??

Answer»

Hi, I'm what you can call a computer tech wannabe... and I'm trying to unblock a friend's computer that is on a small office network and that has the internet access BLOCKED, but I'm not sure how to do it, and I don't wanna mess another stuff. Can anyone help me? Thanks, in advance. um, most employers who block internet do so for a reason, and won't appreciate your attempts to bypass there security. Actually, is the owner of the business who ask me to unblock that pc, cuase he made his past computer tech to block it because of a lazzy EMPLOYEE, but she's not there anymore, and his computer geek never came back, and I'm kind of the new geek , but I don't KNOW to much of networks. It all depends on how it is blocked. You can block the internet from security settings in XP Pro, you can use a firewall or other gateway device to block the internet for one or many computers, you can use third party port blocking software. You might need to find that geek and ask hoe it is blocked.Well, that's the main problem.... that guy dissapear, and because I don't know how he block it, I don;t want to mess with any port and make the problem worst. But if any KNOWS how to identify where's blocked, please let me know. Thanks guys. =Dwhen you try to go to a web page, what HAPPENS?It doesn't open....
I mean...
The computer has network connection....
but no internet connection...

Solve : Networking trouble?

Answer»

I just connected a new HP COMPUTER to a linksys ROUTER (wired), I am on a dell PC that is also wired to the router. I cannot get the network too work.I do have internet connection on both PCs, When I ping the Dell from the HP.I get a reply, and also I get a reply from the router. But when I ping the HP from the Dell I get no reply (it times out).the Dell will get a reply from the router. The IP addresses I use are correct. I should also tell you that the Dell has Windows XP pro, and the HP has Windows Vista. It SEEMS like the HP is invisible to the Dell. It's not a brand compatibility problem...thats for sure.

What IP addresses do you have for the computers and the router?

Have you tried rebooting the router, maybe it lost its connection to ISP?What Service Pack is installed on the Dell XP computer?I have rebooted many times IP address for the Dell is192.168.1.100 and for the HP 192.168.1.101I have Service PAK 1 installedJohn...

The first thing I'd do is make sure you visit Windows Update to download and install the latest "high priority" updates as they pertain to your operating systems. You may need to visit it several times until there are no longer any updates available for both computers. Make sure you update your Dell to Service Pack 2...forget about Service Pack 3 for now.

If, after updating, you are still experiencing issues, please try the Vista networking troubleshooter located here.Turn off the firewall in the Vista machine.

Alan <>< I've seen new vista machines that come packaged with Norton Antivirus suite not be able to to connect to internet in default SETTINGS. Do you have the norton package? How are you trying to network the computer, by creating a domain or by using the same workgroup name for both computers? I had the same situation as you until I changed the workgroup name on my notebook PC (Win Vista) to the same workgroup name that was setup in my Win XP machine. Once I did that, XP could see Vista.I did name both PCs workgroup. The Vista PC came with Norton installed. Thanks for the help but still not working.Did you try updating as I recommended?

Solve : ip conflict?

Answer»

hello everyone,
i am getting a problem from past few days.
sometimes when i try to connect to internet i get an error say ip conflict popping up
and the net gets disconnected and i won't get it back for hours together.
please help me to resolve this ip conflict error.
i have a broadband connection via switch, and os is window xp.Do you have other computers connected to the switch? You normally see that when another computer starts up and takes the IP your machine had ...your machine doesn't let it go so now you have 2 machines with the same address. Yours get blocked.

Check your machine to see if you have a static address or a DHCP. Set it to DHCP if it is set to a static address.

http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/connection/vtkb695.htmwhat kind of switch is it? Does it ASSIGN IP's AUTOMATICALLY? If it is a router, it probably assigns IPs (via DHCP), but if it is just a network switch or hub, it won't.
Check your network device properties to see if it is set up as static or dhcp and change accordingly.@spoiler
all the steps given in http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/connection/vtkb695.htm are already done. so i guess its DHCP.
the switch is assigns is not connected to any other computer and its as far as i know is not a router, but the service provider here MIGHT be providing service via router at his place. How many machines are on your switch with your machine?

You machine is not releasing the IP. I would set a static one high on the list of IPs for example...

Your range could be 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.50 for the machines on your switch. Set your machine to something like 192.168.0.45.

What is the other machine that takes your IP? Does it use DHCP?

well i am the only one on the switch but as i said the rouer at service provider has some 4-5 connections to it.
how can i set a static IP.please helpCan you post exact error message?
What type of connection is it? Windows version? The message displayed is an windows alert at the right bottom of SCREEN in taskbar. it says
IP conflict
some other computer is trying to use your IP
.
something of the above sort is displayed..
can i be any other computer trying to hack my IP and use my internet?

Quote

something of the above sort is displayed..
My question was:
"Can you post exact error message? "
Can't you tell the difference between "exact", and "something of the above sort"?

I asked two other questions. No answer.

I do NOT have crystal ball.Well I'm not going to try to decipher your situation. Just do the following when you get this error. Go to START > RUN > type "cmd" without quotes > click OK. You will get a BLACK window that pops up. In it type the following without quotes, "ipconfig /release". Then it will take about 1 or 2 minutes before you get to type anything else. When you are able to type again type, "ipconfig /renew". Again it will take 1 or 2 minutes. This should then make that message go away and you should be good to go.windows - system error

There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network.

This is the exact error i got .

i tried the solution given by (Drivenbywhat) and it worked fine.

Solve : Laptop Wireless Internet, Excellent Signal, but not connecting to internet?

I have a Dell 9100 Inspiron with Windows XP. For the past year or so, my wireless internet has not worked on my laptop only at home. It works EVERYWHERE else. When OTHERS try to connect to my home wireless connection it works only intermittantly for a few minutes and stops. It always shows as excellent signal but when you open the internet it does not connect. My router is a netgear WGR614 v 6. Any ideas, just try a different router? It works fine connected. thanks.

Solve : LAN issue...is my computer just mad at me??

Answer»

i installed a pretty basic game on my computer. so basic, in fact, that it runs on my old 20gb hd, 756mhz, 512 mb RAM, windows XP, butterfly computer. my problem is that this very basic game WILL run on the new CPU that i have now, but it will not allow me to connect to any other computer in the game via lan. the game is baldur's gate 2 shadows of amn. the new computer i have:3gb of ram, 2.0ghz dual core intel, 500gb hd, windows VISTA home premium, fujitsu lifebook n-series. the problem starts whenever i try to host or JOIN another game. once i do that, the game simply minimizes and tells me that BG2SOA has encountered a problem and must close. ive checked my firewall, and made certain that the game is on the exceptions list...ive reinstalled it, and attempted the ol' restart trick(usually works). but nothing makes it so that i can lan. anyone have a suggestion?Have you ever had this game work on a LAN?
Do you remember how it was done?
Old games REQUIRE a protocol used by Novel that is not recommended on new Windows installs. YES, the game worked perfect on my old computer. so the safer end result would be to not try anything on my computer to make the lan mode work?the protocol was a TCP/IP connection. also, my friend has the same game on his windows vista OS, and the results are fine for him.weird...apparently you have to start the game in windowed mode, start the connection THEN change to full screen...sometimes these THINGS baffle me

Solve : simple enough question - i give up?

Answer»

ok here's the thing. From previous posts you will have seen that I've been trying to get the computers in my workgroup to talk to each other, to no avail. Now I have given up and my family are sharing files and folders through the old fashioned system of copying to and from CDs. We can all connect to the internet but that's all we can do.
Here's the question - why do companies like Microsoft and Belkin claim that setting up a home network is 'easy'? You will be networking within minutes etc. etc. Just follow these four or five simple steps etc. etc. You only have to skim these boards to see that easy is the one thing it isn't!

that's it. HAPPY networking to those who can.

Well if your just setting up a basic peer to peer connection it is. Thats the way I have mine. It would be impossible to get internet without me running a CAT 5, which I dont even NEED the internet if I have to get off an move files. Cds ect... What version of windows are you running? I assume it is windows.Well, you do have a home network if you're all getting on the internet. And it probably wasn't too hard to do. Setting up a workgroup and file sharing...not as easy.Thats not todally true, he has to have a workgroup if the other pc's are getting internet. File sharing isnt hard depending on which windows version he is running.I'm not so sure he needs a workgroup (LAN) to get to the Internet.

Setting up the computers in a Local Area Network can be a pain, depending upon the operating systems involved.[GASP] Aegis, THREE weeks old topic!

Solve : 2 of 3 computers on network not connecting?

Answer»

I have 3 computers in my home on the internet.

-Host is my wife's Japanese language XP SP2 connected via LAN cable from the ISP's modem and then to a belkin wifi router.

-My desktop is XP SP3 connected via belkin wireless card.

-My son's dell laptop XP SP3 connected via INTEL wireless card.

Last night weird things started happening. First my wife lost internet. My son and I were both working fine. Later my desktop couldn't get connected after I turned it off for a while. Laptop remained up on internet and fine.

This morning both wife's and mine are still down. Laptop using son's login connected with IE 7.0.5730.11 but not with FF 2.0.0.15. Changed to my login (administrator) and it connects with both browsers fine. Haven't gone to try son's login again because I'm afraid I'll lose what I have.

I checked all physical connections and unplugged both modem and browser and then powered up again. I'm at a loss here because of the mix of what's working and what's not. If it is the ISP nothing would be working. If it is the router then both the laptop and desktop would be down, but only the desktop is down.

Any ideas? Update: My wife got her computer to connect after restoring to point from last week. So now it's maybe some software problem?Update again-answer is here: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/07/09/ms_dns_patch_zonealarm_woes/

"MS DNS PATCH snuffs net connection for ZoneAlarm users" Zone Alarm firewall is on both desktops but not the laptop. Removed this windows patch and both desktops are fine.

Thanks for sharing the problem and resolution. --dahlarbear

Solve : Wireless N card need new router?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new Dell Laptop with the wireless N CARD. I need to purchase a wireless router to hook up to my cable modem. Once I hook this up is the wireless SECURE or does it give everyone a chance to snoop on my COMPUTER? What do I need to do to be secure and not seen?
What do you suggest for the wireless router?

Thanks for any help for the old man.If you are not to technically savvy I recommend D-Link wireless routers. In my area they are normally cheaper and easier to SETUP. Otherwise myself I like to use Linksys products.

As for security one you hook the wireless router to the cable modem things are secured through the wire. What that means is that your wireless is still WIDE OPEN. You will want to LOG into the new router/wireless router and change your log on information and setup the type of security you want. WPA is a very commonly used security option, easy to setup, and provides more security than WEP.

I hope this was of some help or at least gets you into the right direction.

Solve : cannot access 192.168.0.1?

Answer»

Hi there, this is my first post. I am not good with computer.

I need help. I bought new WIFI router dlink DIR-300. After follow all guidelines, it fail at network connection to 192.168.0.1. for set up. Internet connection through router/ethernet can work. I even use another set of computer for comparing but still doesnot work
My system as follows:
Vista Enterprise VLM
Network adaptor : NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6000+
Mobo: abit NF-M2PV
RAM - PC800 2G
Chances are you have conflicting IP ADDRESSES. Most routers have a DEFAULT of 192.168.0.1. You SAID you have a wired router and a wireless router. As I mentioned, the default is probably your problem. Both are trying to have the same ip which isn't possible. Here are two things you can try. Disconnect your wired router and just connect your wireless router. Can you set it up fine? If so, then the problem is what I mentioned.

The second THING you can try is related to the first. If you found that taking the wired router out of the equation solved your problem then I would suggest you change the ip of the wired router to something like 192.168.0.50. Then connect your wireless router which would be 192.168.0.1 by default. This should solve your problem. Consult your wired router manual for chaning the ip.

Well, as FAR as I know, nothing like this exists. I could be wrong, but I can't think of any way to do this without software. Why are you trying to stop the modem from calling out? Is there a program that's trying to use the modem to dial out?

Solve : Need help on Sharing a printer wirelessly?

Answer»

Here's what I have.

Wireless Modem (SAGEM [emailprotected] Livebox 3202)...basically a wireless modem

Dell laptop (Vista 32 Ultimate)...connects wirelessly on its own to above modem
HP Laptop (XP Home SP3)...connects wirelessly on its own to above modem

Printer Epson STYLUS Inkjet D68..connected to the HP laptop

Can anyone GIVE me a step by step setup on how to share the printer?
Obviously the HP can print from it but not the Dell. Not sure where to begin or what bases to cover.

thanks for any help or directions

Steph
Start on the HP. Go into your printer settings (start > Printers and faxes OR Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes) and locate your printer. Right click on the icon and choose properties. Click the sharing tab. Choose Share this Printer. If it is just the 2 computers on the network, choose to let everyone access. Click ok.
Now, if the CD that came with the printer has Vista drivers, put it into the Dell Computer. run the setup program, and follow the prompts to install a network Printer. You should be able to browse the network for your HP computer. If you don't have the CD, or it does not have Vista drivers, Go to Epson's website tp get it.thank hmar...yea ive told the xp system to share the printer...but i think i do not have my network setup. I basically need to know what to do on the HP machine...then what to do on the DELL vista machine and what if anything with the modem SINCE both machines connect to it wirelessly but not to each other.I am assuming that the wireless modem is working as a router as well as a modem. The 2 computers should communicate just FINE through the router. If you can get to the internet, you should be able to share files and printers between the computers, as well. Check to make sure that any firewalls on the computers are set to allow FILE and printer sharing. Verify that the computers can see each other in network places, and then you should be able to share the printer with my earlier advice. Make sure that the HP is on before trying to connect or use the printer.

Solve : Modem troubleshooting?

Answer»

Good Morning,
This is Dbrown again still with a sporatic yahoo loading. I am beginning to think that it is with the Modem now. I say this because when I disconnect and reconnect the modem yahoo will load quickly, but....after SEVERAL browsings, yahoo will take several minutes to load a page or will not load at all. So could it be the Modem?I'd create a PERSISTANT ping to a website and see if you have connectivity issues. Go to Start RUN, and enter CMD if 2000/xp/vista or COMMAND if 98 etc.

At the dos shell enter the FOLLOWING

ping www.yahoo.com -t

and you should see the following below until you press CTRL + C

Solve : Flow Rate Control to avoid Saturation?

Answer»

Looking for a way to bottleneck the network transfer RATE between a system at one site and another without setting up a quality of service. I have to transfer 16GB from one site to the next and the distance is too far to drive and SNEAKER network it on a external hard drive and users do not have access to the data to burn to DVDs.

Anyone have any suggestions on a good application that will allow for me to specify the rate of the data flow to avoid total saturation across our wan bridged to the other site.

Been thinking of maybe using Filezilla FTP to FTP the data and use that to get data from POINT A to B, but I think the PORT by which filezilla operates is blocked at both sides

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated .... kind of wondering if there is a utility that can bottleneck the network ADAPTERS data rate to avoid saturation such as specifying a 50% flow rate etc so the business can still run with minimal impact to the users at each site.

The other I can just move the files back an forth without problems.Your talking about transfering files from one computer to the other? one is ALLOWED into the others with no password? I the XP the one that is different, or one of the 2000s?both of the 2ks, however the xp has no problems.

Solve : home LAN problems?

Answer»

Hello everybody! My first post.

OK, let's get down to the problem.

I will try to list specifics as detailed as possible but I'm afraid I don't know too much about networking yet, even though my network has been up and running for like 8 years now (and I've never seen this problem before). I'll list specifics first so you'll know the hardware and then list the problem...

All computers have 2 internal hard drives (IDE). Unimportant detail really but details...

3 computers; 2 computers are Windows 98 Second Edition (fully UPDATED with Microsoft Update) and the third is Windows XP SP1 (obviously not fully updated).
Hate Windows XP SP3 and don't care for SP2 so I'm stickin' with SP1...
XP computer has 1GB RAM, 3GHz Intel P4 processor. Can't remember offhand about the video card/RAM but should be unimportant in the situation anyway...
1 98SE comp has 768MB RAM and other has like 64MB? Can't remember for sure.

All are networked via cat 5e ethernet cable for internet and home LAN.
All computers have 2 ethernet cards (10/100 cards); 1 for home LAN and 1 for Internet.

Internet card goes to a wireless/wired internet router (Zyxel P-334W). Home LAN goes to a network switch (TRENDnet 8-port). The Windows XP SP1 computer is set up as the "master browser" (on the home LAN) and all communications must go through it.

My internet is wireless through a local ISP (antenna on roof which relays back and forth to my ISP's equipment on a tower nearby).

Anyway, enough details.

My problem occurred today when I was trying to move (using Windows Explorer) ~8GB of data from 1 of the 98SE computers (the one with 768MB RAM) to the XP computer; but I should mention that I was using the XP computer to do the moving. I other words, I had 2 Windows Explorer windows open; one was my 98SE comp folder and the other was the destination XP folder. I did a drag from the 98SE folder to the XP folder and told it to "Move" the contents. It started moving them and said it would be like 30 minutes. Ah heck no; I am not sitting there that long and walked away.

Later I noticed activity between the 2 not only on the home LAN switch but also on the internet router. It was using BOTH networks to transfer! How is this possible? I didn't like that and disconnected the routers POWER and it, in turn, didn't like that and aborted. I went back to the XP computer and tried again and it still finished transferring the files normally using only the home LAN.

So my question is, how was / is it possible for XP to use not only the home LAN but also my router to transfer files to it? I thought that was maybe the VPN but it appears to still be disabled... I'm lost.

I don't like it using the internet router for transferring files. I don't care that the router has a built-in firewall, I don't want to allow that as the possibility exists that my files can be hanging out in the open for the world to get at if they have the knowledge (my opinion only).

Anybody know how to disable this "feature" ( bug)?

Maybe I need to disable some of the network protocols on my XP computer? I'm afraid I know little about those and wouldn't know what I need and what I don't... Maybe some kind soul could provide a list for me to go by in my situation (home LAN still works and Internet Router communications still working afterwards)?

Oh, and somebody needs to add "GHz" to the spell-check. You can use your own spell checker.

You said you have used this setup for 8 years?

The following are 98 to XP rules, not laws. Not absolutely needed.
1. Do NOT have two networks active when you copy large files./folders
2. Do NOT use MOVE for large file sets. Use Copy.
3. Do NOT leave an explorer windows open on the source machine.
4. Do NOT copy all files in a folder. Copy the folder to the target.
5. DO NOT use the 98 PC as the commander. US the XP PC.

Can you show o diagram of how you system is connected? Just curious. Yeah, I could use my own spell checker, but I'm lazy like that.

Do not have two networks active? This doesn't make sense to me... Can you please explain?

Do not use Move? Why not? I've done it for years with no PROBLEMS...

Do not leave explorer windows open on the source machine? Why not? And for the record, I didn't. I had two windows open on the destination machine (XP); One window was my 98SE computer shares and the other window was the destination folder on my XP computer... I've also done it for years with no problems.

Do not copy all files in a folder? Why not? Again, I've done it for years without problems. Oh, and for the record, I was moving an entire folder, not just specific files...

I was not using a 98 PC as the commander. As I said, the XP computer is the browser master and commander, and I was, at the time, also using the XP computer for the moving operation.

Can you please explain the why's for those so I can be informed?

Diagram is attached. Thanks!

[attachment deleted by admin]You diagram looks like two networks.

As I said, those are rules, not laws. This is based on observation. But not 8 years worth. I have noticed some kind of problems in only a few weeks working with my PCs on a local network.

Moving has to kill the files on the source machine.
It can hang if a file is open. Use copy. The kill the files, it you wish.

Windows has a hard time moving a lot of files. I don't know what the limit is. But moving a folder does not seem to raise the problem. I dunno. I didn't write the code.

The XP machine needs to be in charge due to NFTS rules. Win 98 does not copy files with all the things NTFS needs.

Recently Microsoft has made some changes in the way XP does LN stuff. It is a security issue.

Yep, two different networks; home and internet.
Thanks.

Solve : PCI Adapter Card vs USB Adapter?

Answer»

We just recently SWITCHED to AT&T Uverse, so we now have wireless. We were told that Uverse didn't work with computers having Windows 2000, so we just replaced that computer with a desktop that has XP. Apparently that computer does not have a wireless card. I've looked at both a PCI card and a USB adapter for wireless. Is one better than the other? Not REALLY, I have a PCI card and it has excellent signal strength most of the time, but that depends on the distance too. The only difference is that one is portable and one isn't. Well, EASILY portable.

I would just go for the cheaper one, but if you want it to be more permanent and less chance of it getting bumped and breaking then go for PCI card.

Your choice... I have two PCI wireless cards, a XTreme-N and a Wireless-G, both from D-Link. They work great.

As Mr.Google says, an internal card is a more permanent SOLUTION and also has less chance of being accidentally unplugged at ciritcal times Ditto. More important is to get one that WORKS for you.

Solve : Can other people tell how long you have been on a specific website.?

Answer»

I know that it is POSSIBLE for others to tell what websites you are on; however, can they ALSO tell how long you have been on?
ThanksAre you looking for some sort of program to do this?

What EXACTLY do you want it to do?I am not looking for a specific program, I just wanted to know if someone comes on the same computer after you are done USING it, can they check and see what the website you have been on is and how long you have been on it? I think some of the businesses can do this. Thanks for your help.Unless you wipe out your history completely, they will be able to see what sites you have visited but not how long you have been there.

Quote

I think some of the businesses can do this.
For web history, I think anyone can figure out how to view it.
However, for them to log your activity and how long you spend on whatever website, they will need some sort of spying program, which can get very expensive, and very intrusive.

Why, do you suspect something? No, I have a friend who was concerned that maybe someone was doing that to her. Just curiosity. Thanks for your help. CathyHmmm...alright.

You know, if he thinks someone may be logging his activity, you can post a HijackThis Log here and one of our MALWARE Specialists can take a look at it and determine if someone is intruding your friend's privacy.

Solve : Printing across the network?

Answer»

Here's the setup:

Dell A960AIO printer attached to a Dell desktop running XP Pro.

Sony Viao notebook attached wirelessly

Both MACHINES are networked by a DLink EXTREME N router.

I can not figure out how to print from the Vista notebook.

Printing works fine locally from the XP machine to the printer. I can share between computers. I can see the printer, and I can connect to it, and I'll see it in my spooler directory. However if I try to print it gives me an unable to connect error. Each system has the proper drivers, I've disabled every FIREWALL (the ones on the machine and the one on the router) and nothing works. I always get a cannot connect error when I try to print. But again, I can see the printer, and I can share FILES across the network. Something's just going wrong with the printing.

All of the other fixes I've found, such as installing it locally then changing the port, etc., haven't helped. You said that you have the right drivers but at the same TIME you are saying that when you tried to install the printer to the vista laptop locally it still fails? If so, then it's a driver problem. After all you said you can share files in the network. No, sorry, I wasn't clear there.

Printing works fine from the Vista notebook when hooked up directly to the printer. Furthermore, the XP machine can print through the Vista laptop when the printer is hooked into the laptop. Try creating the same user with the same password that you have on the xp pc in the vista pc. Log in with that user in vista and share the printer. Now try to print to that printer from your xp pc.

Solve : wireless gateway modem problem: how to get 2 computers get internet at sametime?

Answer»

I have two computers, one is upstairs and it's the laptop which Im using right now and I have the smc wireless GATEWAY modem all set up here so my laptop is not connected to the internet wirelessly. The other computer, which is the problem here, is in the basement. its just a regular desktop and it has no internet CONNECTION whatsoever. therefore, Im wondering how I could make the desktop computer gain internet connection also because this wireless gateway product I got is suppose to wirelessly give access to multiple computers in the house at the same time, but I dont know how to make that happen. what must I do to the desktop computer in order to give it access to the internet along with the laptop's internet Im using right now? by the way, Im sorry if this question was ever answered before. thanksDoes the desktop PC have a network CARD? If so is it a wireless card? The easiest way, as mroilfield is also hinting at, would be to connect the desktop computer wirelessly to the internet gateway, assuming the wireless signal is powerful enough to reach the desktop in the basement.
Can you tell us more about the desktop such as the brand name and model NUMBER or the specifications.
What is the brand name and model number of the internet gateway?the desktop pc doesnt have a wireless card but thats what I was told to acquire

the desktop pc is a pentium 4, windows xp, 1.7 ghz 512 ram

the wireless gateway modem is called smc8014w-g broadband wireless gateway.

nevermind. THANKS for the help. I went to bestbuy and I got the pci wireless card and now its working.

Solve : Choosing USB or an PCI Ethernet/Network Interface Card For DSL Best Performance?

Answer»

I am currertly using USB connection for DSL & having average performance! My other choice is some kind of so called ethernet or NETWORK pci interface CARD ! I am confused about finding the correct ether. or other different types & versions cards for my DSL connection! All I know from my dell dimension L400c desktop PC states, that the ether. or network card value requires 10/100Mbps. Is there a difference between an ethernet & a network card ? If a card manufacturer list as an ethernet/network card ,does that mean it will perform well for both? the most popular one that everyone uses is the 10/100 card or if your computer has one integrated on the motherboard you can just plug a cat 5 network cable into that instead and yes if you end up buying a network card it's basically the same THING as a ethernet one and although they sometimes sell the slower cards I would GET the 10/100 card since that is pretty MUCH standard now

Solve : knowing?

Hello guys.i have a wireless connecting here in our house.I stationed it beside my desktop. But unfortunately, the signal everytime i use/access the net, it seems that someone is taking advantage of the signal.I do not want to PROTECT it using a password cause my brother can HARDLY access to it.is there a way of identifying other users aside from me using DOS command?hope you can help me with these.access the router setup pages, described in the router manual. GENERALLY, this is done by navigating to your router's IP via a browser.

The router pages generally will PROVIDE you with a list of all leased IPs, the name of the computer using it, and so forth.

Additionally, you can create rules whereby the router will only allow your PCS MAC ID and your brothers MAC ID (MAC Ids are unique Identifiers built into every network card) to connect, thus preventing anybody else from using your signal.

Solve : Main PC like a snail!?

Answer»

The setup is main PC connected through WIRED router and a laptop with wireless connection. We have had constant cut offs for some TIME. We contacted our ISP who carried out many tests and said that the problem was not with them, to contact the manufacturers of the router. This we did and Linksys tried everything they could think of over 3 days, but still no luck. The laptop is connecting at great speeds, but the main PC is almost at a standstill. In desperation we formatted the PC but the problem REMAINS! so we have come to the conclusion it must be Lan card. Is this possible? or can anyone else think of a reason for this to happen.
We are using XP Pro, IE,have anti virus and spybot, adaware etc installed and used frequently please can someone help? Are you using onboard LAN? Whether onboard or an add-on card, I think I'd buy a PCI card as the next step in trying resolve this. Here's what newegg.com has:

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=27&name=Network-Interface-Cards

I'm using one of these: D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Network Adapter - RETAIL. It's been working fine for me.Just thought I would let you know that in desperation I uninstalled Windows update
KB951748. after reading of the problems with Zone Alarm. I have NEVER had Z.A but thought I would try getting rid of this update. Hey Presto! everything started running correctly again. Weird or what?

Interesting....bug in the update or maybe was modified by something(maybe a virus)

Solve : Connectivity dropping with wireless?

Answer»

Hi,

One of our four computers is experiencing this problem - the signal strength to the wireless router will SHOW "excellent" but I will be unable to load pages/download email/etc. Most of the time, only one computer is in use, at most two at a time. The others are backups for work, but I've tested their connectivity.

This is intermittent - some days it won't happen at all, other days it will be consistent throughout the day with 3 minutes of connectivity, 5 minutes of none, etc.

My laptop (Panasonic W7) is still under warranty and it just had a new wireless card (internal) put in. We have Verizon business DSL with a static IP and they've been out a few times and have fixed a line outside, but the DSL is working for the other computers.

I have a Linksys router and a Verizon/Westell MODEM. However, I've gone on other wireless networks and have the same problem, so I think it's connected to the computer itself as opposed to the DSL connection.

When I connect my laptop to the router directly it does not recognize the connection at all. Also, when I enter the Linksys router IP address, I cannot access the router.

I've seen that a few other people have similar issues, but no real resolution has been found for it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for at least 2 months now and this is my primary work computer - meaning work is suffering!!! Please let me know any further information you'd like that would help you diagnose.
Quote

When I connect my laptop to the router directly
What happens, when you hook it up straight to the modem?
Have you EVER been able to connect with the laptop in question? If this were my work computer and it was under warranty I would send it back. After moving my files to another computer.
Wi Fi and Windows XP have issues. Sometimes with the hardware. Sometimes with the XP updates. In either case, you want a sure and quick answer to the problem. Go find a computer that works all the time every time. It will take you three days or more to find that it is something that 'was not supposed to happen' or 'we never saw that before' or something like that.

The alternative, if you love the computer, is get three or four wireless adapters and give them all a try. BTW in some cases XP works on an open connection, but not reliable with WEP or whatever it is now. Hardware and software problem. You just get another adapter and try it.Thanks - I did the reset catalog/reset log I saw in another forum and that seems to have worked. I haven't had the problem for 3 days now, which is the longest I've gone in months without it dropping.

I have also purchased a USB wireless stick and will have that as a backup going forward (but haven't YET set it up/tested it).

Just out of curiosity, what does the reset catalog/reset log do, and what was wrong?

*** This is what I did......
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh WINSOCK reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.
Did it work?

Solve : Connect to internet (IE6) mysteriously stopped working?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first post here...

I've been called in to look at a not-so-straightforward networking problem at a client site. We're about the 4th or 5th tech comany to look at this mess, so you can imagine what we've COME across so far. I've already straightened out several connection problems and device connections with the help of the parent comany's offiste I/T support.

The shorter story:

Machine running XP, SP2. Client site is a large motel ( and one of thier guest services is free wireless internet). This Desktop connects to a d-link router which connects to HP Procurve 24 port managed switch (on port 24). HP Switch has other connections to the business WAP's (4 of them), and to the Server, a Dell Poweredge 8xx. The desktop's primary purpose is to display a bunch of wireless security cameras in the proprietary cam s/w application and then on a web interface . The web interface is supposed to come up at the address 192.168.1.1(and a string of other CHARACTERS).

symptoms: Internet Explorer will no load ANY websites. None.

Additional information:

- system rebooted NUMEROUS TIMES.
- Camera maintenance/setup app can "See" 9 of 11 cameras. ( I think two have lost their SETTINGS, possible power fail, not confirmed.)
- Cam recording s/w cam "see" 7 cameras ( not all 11 but that I think is a different problem).
- Tech support at parent company confirms that 9 cams are connecting to various of the 4 WAPS. So, I should expect to see 9, and I also know the 4 WAP's are functioning.
- All cameras are assigned unique static IP/PORT (eg 192.168.1.8:88, 192.168.1.7:87....)
- I can ping those cameras that I can get a picture from the recording s/w.
- my IP MUST be set to 192.168.1.250
- my Gateway MUST be set to 192.168.1.251
- subnet is obviously 255.255.255.0

- I can try to log in to the router and am challenged, but nobody knows the admin password. I should probably reset the router, but am uncomfortable blowing the setting away without having them recorded somewhere.

- I've tried various configurations of hardware, and there is still a D-link wireless access point that seems to have no purpose, and has since been removed (by me). All applications had functioned fine without this D-LINK WAP connected.

- ALL the cameras on the site were working 3 weeks ago... which is LONG after I had been called in to resolve some other issues with the network. The client explains that camera web interface "Just stopped working one day".

- The hotel tech support indicates that the managed port on the HP Procurve is "wide open". I had though that they may had enabled some firewalling or something around the time of the reported failure, but that is not the case.
I am supposed to call back this client today or tomorrow and (attempt) to fix this, but I'm out of options.

-Firewalls - Windows & an expired copy of Norton AV - turned off.

Thanks for taking a peek at this.

Solve : adding new Window PC in Samba Server?

Answer»

How to add new PC (OS: Windows XP Pro) in SAMBA Server (OS: Linux Redhat)?

There's an EXISTING network, all workstations are member of "CSI" Domain.
example:
wks01 - member of CSI
wks02 - member of CSI
wks03 - member of CSI

How do I join this new PC (wks04) in the existing network?
Quote

steps that I found in Google
1) Right mouse click on "MyComputer" and pick "properties.
2) Under the tab "COMPUTER NAME" run the "Network Identification Wizard", or more simply use the button "change...".
3) Enter the name of the domain "CSI", as configured in smb.conf file on the Samba Server.
4) Enter the "root' ID and password for the Samba server. This id will have been previously configured when you setup the Samba server.
5) Reboot

After I do the steps above, do I need to configure something in the Samba Server?

Please advice.I don't think so. When I rum Samba it finds everything on the network, And gets into things that even Windows does not see!

Solve : Unexplained modem/router/internet problem?

Answer»

It's a NetComm NB6Plus4W ADSL2+ Modem router that I received with my internet PLAN this week.

This is the problem: After I ran the setup disc the internet was connected and working. But after about an hour the power light on the modem went red and all the lights went off and then came back on green. LIKE it rebooted. I checked the power cables and they were fine. But after that happened the internet was only connected locally and not to the internet. I tried to repair it but it said that there was something wrong with it's DNS settings? So I think it had been reset to it's default. I ran the setup disk again and it worked fine the rest of the day. The next morning it was working fine until I tried to connect another computer through the wireless and it rebooted again. Basically now this keeps happening and I have to keep running the disc/remembering a NEW SSID and WPA key. What's the problem here? How do I keep it from rebooting and resetting the settings? It's happened about seven times. Thanks if you can help.Ask them to EXCHANGE it for a new one.
Stuff goes bad, even when new.

Solve : Router says connected but no web pages?

Answer»

I have a desk top computer that is connected to the INTERNET by cable modem. I then pick up wireless connection through a linksys WRT54G Router to built in cards on an Imac and an HP Laptop. The Imac is still getting a signal and connecting to sites but the laptop has developed problems. The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv5216cl notebook. It has Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002, and originally had service pack 3. It has 2 GB of RAM and an AMD Turion ML-34 1.79GHz processor. An event occurred, I am not sure what, that took away my documents which were backed up thankfully and stopped the DVD/CD drive from working, also the audio. All sorts of lost files occurred with numerous dialog boxes that would not go away. I did a PC recovery which seemed to cure a lot of the problems regarding DVD and audio but I still was missing files and was back to Service pack 2 and IE6. This was ok for a while and then the present problem occurred. Even though the router seems to be connecting to both the Imac and the laptop the Imac can connect to the internet but the laptop cannot bring up web sites.
I have tried disconnecting the modem and router for 30 secs and also connecting the cable modem directly to the laptop but no joy.
I have also tried in the command prompt ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/registerdns
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew

and

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh wisock reset catalog

Neither of these OPTIONS worked after restarting the laptop.
I was wondering if WinSockFix would be an option and if so how I could download it without internet connection
I was also wondering if a nasty bug could be the problem and what would you reccomend to tackle that.
I would appreciate any suggestions as I need the laptop on a photoshoot that is coming up soon. Thank you.Quote from: coomie on February 09, 2009, 07:52:07 PM

What sort of "event" would suddenly delete all your personal documents, as well as hose the drivers for your DVD drive and sound COMPONENT?

Try reinstalling the driver of the wireless adapter. Can you connect to the Internet over a cable?

In light of the myriad of odd problems you are experiencing, I would recommend ultimately just reinstalling Windows XP on the HP laptop. You could very well spend several days' time trying to troubleshoot all these errors. Yes, you may have gotten hit by one or multiples forms of malware. It is more time-efficient to just reformat and reinstall. Don't forget to backup your personal files and to re-install an antivirus program. Then, try to make your account a "user" instead of an "administrator". Good luck. Thanks for the suggestions. I do not know what event occured. If I did I may have had a better idea of how to tackle it. The problem is now resolved. It turned out that when I did the recovery it left a RECORD of my antivirus program AVG, even though I could not access it and also brought back a trial of Norton. The two combined to block web pages. When I uninstalled Norton it resolved the problem.Quote

Solve : Not sure what's happening.?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I'm not sure what's happening with my computer so first of all I'll start by explaining what I've done.

Formated my computer TODAY did the usual steps etc etc.. then as I was going to connect my modem I noticed two of my network drives don't work anymore so I tried using USB and it installed but as I went to look through my Device Manager settings I found it end up being in the Network adapters so I can't connect to the net at all through my computer as it just see's it as a Local Network Connection? I'm assuming that it should be under Modems but not sure what to do, can someone please explain or help me fix this problem.

btw, I'm running VISTA 32-bit OEM and have a Motorola SB5101 modem.

Thanks in advance.you unstall n/w driver? ple check it.Not too sure on how to do that as the computer was just reformated. =SWait, so you're plugged in via Internet Cable but cannot get online, correct?

Does it say you are connected?Yep, i'm plugged in via internet cable and cannot get online as it just acts as a another computer connected through my network? if that makes sense.

It does say that' i'm connected with my modem status.Does Windows say you're connected?

Also, what Windows Version is this?WINDOW's version is Vista Ultimate.

If I open up network and sharing it SHOWS that I'm not connected through the internet only towards Multiple networks icon.

Solve : IE or firefox?

Answer»

Which browser is better interner explorer 7 or firefox 3.0.1 explorer 7 browser is best... because this is fast internet programmingWhat's Fast Internet Programming?

I think Firefox has gotta be the best because of how well it can be customized.
It ALSO seems faster (surfing the net and starting up)If this was between IE6 and FF2, I would stick with IE6. But when it comes to IE7 and FF3, I think they're both junk. You COULD consider trying the latest version of Maxthon.I like FF2. STILL use it.

IE6 over FF2? I can't LIVE without tabs anymore...What you like better is better

Solve : Hooking up internet to my laptop?

Answer»

I have a laptop. I don't know EXACTLY what it is, but I know its an HP pavilion. Its OS is windows XP.

My Router is a Linksys wireless-G Broadband router. It gives internet to my Nintendo wii, which is LOCATED right next to my laptop, so I know the signal reaches that far. But, my laptop gets no internet.

Any help is appreciated.

If you have any questions, ask.Does this laptop have wireless capabilities...or is it hard wired to the router?

If it has wireless capabilities...is it enabled on the laptop? There may be a button located somewhere on the laptop that enables/disables the WLAN connection. Without knowing the model number of the laptop...it's hard to say for sure.

Has this laptop ever CONNECTED to the internet before? It has connected to a wired internet before. I checked its network connections, and it tells me theres a connection called "1394 connection" that IS connected. STILL no internet. There is a button on the keyboard called "Wireless". Ive tried pushing it, but nothing happens. When you press that button does a light go on or off?

Also...have you checked to see if the laptop can view any wireless connections in you area (including your router)? If the 1394 is connected...then you may need to repair the wireless connection, by simply right-clicking on that icon and choosing the Repair option.

Also...is your router protected by WEP, WPA? You may need to make sure the laptop can see your router and then, using the appropriate key...try to connect to it.A light does not go off. Ive tried to repair it once before, but it didnt work.

The laptop is an "hp pavilion zv5034us".

Ill check on what its protected by.

Solve : Random disconnecting for 2 months already...?

Answer»

Hi. I'm glad I found this place cause I'm almost ready to give up on this problem. Maybe you can help me.

I have been getting random disconnections since November, and several Comcast technicians have come over to my house to see what my problem is but they can't find the source of the problem. They have checked my wiring and they SAY everything is fine. I have bypassed the router and the problem is still there.
My PC and my laptop have the same problem, so I figured the problem was the signal and not something in the computers. But because I have tried making Comcast do something about it without much success, I guess maybe there's something wrong with my computer.

I have RAN Adaware and AVG antivirus.. and they don't really find something wrong. Then I checked these forums and found similar posts in which the OP wheres asked to post a Hijack this log. I don't know if this is the right place to post these logs, so forgive me and redirect me to right place. But here it is:

(hoping there's something wrong that can be fixed haha)

Thank you in advance. The log is clean.
What do you mean by disconnection? Modem/router lights go off, or....?Well my modem can look fine and still be DISCONNECTING. Sometimes I noticed the cable light blinking on the modem. The last technician I contacted told me theres probably something wrong with the line that comes from the pole to the back of my house. They have been working on the poles outside my house but the problem is still there. I guess they will have to come back again to check the lines.
The problem usually happens in the evenings, with random disconnections that last a few seconds, then as it gets later in the night it worsens and the disconnection lasts several minutes; when it connects again it only gives me a space of a few seconds to load pages, etc. It is really weird, cause it doesn't happen every night. I thought the cold weather on some nights might be affecting it, but they tell me it shouldn't be an issue.
I just wish they could find something wrong with the lines, or something to give me hope that it can get solved.
Thanks for your answer to my post and your help.OK. Am I right, that by disconnecting, you mean, you can't open any web site?
If so, what browser, version?
Did you try another browser?
Did you double check, it's really connection problem, by running ping command, when the situation happens?By disconnecting I mean the connection is interrupted, lost, unable to communicate with the web. When it happens I can't browse, download, stream or play online because there is no connectivity. We FIRST noticed it because some pages wouldn't load and we had to click refresh until they did. We thought maybe it was the website being slow with traffic, but then my brother who plays World of Warcraft started noticing that he would disconnect randomly. He would start lagging a little and then suddenly he got disconnected. He had to keep on logging in the game. He always ask the people in the game if the server is lagging, and most of the time it's just our connection being unreliable. Neither my PC connected directly through a cable nor my laptop (wireless) can connect to the Internet when the problem happens.

The problem is very random, I tried to notice a pattern and I still don't get when it exactly happens, aside from when it happens it gets worse at night time. For example, today it's not causing any problems apparently, but I'm sure this doesn't prove it will also work tomorrow.
The technicians over the phone have noticed that the connection drops because I call them when it's not working, but when they send the technician most of the time they don't find anything wrong because as I said, one day it can be bad and the next one fine. I really hope they come check their lines or something, cause when they come to my house they don't find anything wrong, and I am honestly tired and frustrated of having technician appointments almost every week for the past two months without getting good results.
The other thing that discourages me is that about two weeks ago there was an outage in my area, and supposedly that was what it was causing the problem. They fixed the outage and my problem still persists. Basically, it's very weird, and that's why I need to make sure that I check any possible thing that can cause this.
I hope I don't sound like I'm complaining too much, I really appreciate your attention to my problem. Did you ask ISP to replace the modem?
Is any router involved? They did replace the modem, and as I said I bypassed the router and the problem was still there.

Thanks though, because it seems in the past days I haven't had any noticeable lag issues. Hopefully the problem is solved and it will continue like that.Let's hope, it stays that way

2100.

you may want to edit out your MAC address (physical address) and the IP address because a dubious person could use that info for the wrong purposes.

looks like you are connected directly to the modem without a router, correct??
Have you contacted your ISP to see if they are having line problems or other such nonsense?

Thanks for the advice and I edited the information.

I am connected directly through the modem.

According to the ISP, they are not having any line problems or other such nonsense.

Thanks again, for looking into it, everyone, I was starting to give up on wireless internet.

I used the following information to repair the winsock, but I still get a little message that network cable has been unplugged:

In command prompt (start menu>run>cmd) type and hit enter after each line:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /RELEASE
ipconfig /renew

If that doesn't work...

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log press enter

then

netsh winsock reset catalog press enter

Then restart your PC.

If this doesn't help run WinSockFix. (Download from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml)
Then restart your PC.
Talked to clearwire, on the phone about four hours ago, spent TWO hours going over the same stuff I have already tried listed here already, plus moved the wireless modem around the room for an hour until i had four lines.

Still have the same problem, network cable unplugged, and then it disconnects me from the internet and my phone frequently (every minute of the day). Tech support thinks it might be the phone adapter (voip box) that is causing, the "network cable unplugged" issue. So he told me to wait two days and if it persists to call them back. Next step, from my understanding, is to take the phone adapter (voip box) in and have checked out and they will replace it for free if it is the problem.

same problem! What I did is a system restore before the problem came an it solve mine (windows update? )
*Sorry for my bad English*I have been THINKING about a complete system restore, more like a reformat for awhile, just have to wait for the wife to show back home. So i can back up the important things on her profile and then start the process.

Thanks....The full system restore, didn't work.

I am currently switching from my wireless internet service provider to a cable one.

Thanks again for everyone that helped me and read my post.
