Solve : is it possible to use a laptop screen as a stand-alone monitor??

Answer»

hey guys
i just got a raspberry pi today and i have an old laptop kicking around. Instead of BUYING a new monitor for the raspberry pi, im wondering if it would be possible to just take the screen off of the laptop and somehow use that on the raspberry pi.
Im assuming i would still have to power the screen somehow, or does anyone know if this little board is powerful enough to just run the screen?
heres a link to the Pi's page:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs

Basically the Pi supports composite OR hdmi out, but not VGA. Is there a way i can hook the laptop screen up to one of these?

thanks! Not without rewiring and COMING up with a way to power the screen. The Pi isn't designed to power the screen, nor does it carry enough power to jury rig a connection. Unless you know enough about electronics to rewire and power the screen safely, I wouldn't advise attempting to do this. You'd be better off getting an inexpensive monitor for it.Short answer. NO

Long answer. Yes, ,indeed!
You sell the laptop for parts and make enough money to buy a converter that hooks  the  handheld to a standard TV set. Quality is fair, but the size is GREAT!

thanks mike thats exactly along the lines of what i was looking for! ill give that tutorial a more in-depth look this weekend.

To previous posters:
If converting the laptop screen proves too difficult, what about using an old cell phone screen? I have a RAZR, CRAZR and Sony Cybershot k850i all kicking around that i wouldnt mind messing around with in the name of science haha. could the Pi possibly power these smaller screens?
i found another forum here, http://www.computerforums.org/forums/hardware/mobile-phone-screen-lcd-monitor-196395.html, talking about converting a phone screen to VGA via matching the pins and whatnot, but since the Pi either has composite or HDMI, would this still EVEN be an option? He quotes the price as less than $50. For about $60 you can GET a decent refurbished LCD screen with HDMI input and save yourself the trouble of having to do all that work hoping you don't fry something in the process.

Looks like a fun little project, but to me wouldn't be worth the trouble. Just my opinion though.

Solve : Laptop with monitor screen issues...?

Answer»

I just bought a new Acer 24" monitor for use at home with my 15.6 inch laptop and everything works fine apart from there being a slight problem with the screen on either the monitor or the laptop depending on which one of them is my primary display. For example, if I was to use my laptop as my main display then my monitor will only let me use half of the screen and the rest will be black and unusable. But if I was to use my monitor as the primary display then I will have a small part of my laptop screen cut off at the bottom. The monitors resolution is 1920x1080 and the laptop is 1366x768. Lower resolutions on either the laptop or monitor give different results.

my monitor is an Acer s240hl connected to my laptop using the VGA plug

I have been looking all over the net for possible fixes but alas have found none. Any help will be appreciated thanks.

Good morning turbomike135 and welcome to CH

Are you setting your LCD and "extend my desktop" or are you "set up as duplicate image"

To Identify your display in the adjust screen resolution there should be a BUTTON for "identify" then you will see a big 1 or 2 on the display

you can have different resolutions on the displays both the resolutions you put up here they both look 16x9

My self I have a DV7 and a G60 and have DONE this with both of them.

if you are getting top half with a picture and bottom half black it can be a driver issue but more than likely just the resolution that is chosen

Is the resolution being set the same on both monitors if so that is your problem because with them being a different size they can not be set to the same resolution (i.e both can not be set to 1366x768 etc)

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Ok well, I am already using extended display feature but have tried the others. Everything else seems to work fine except with that extended desktop between this laptop and the monitor. I just tried with a different laptop and had no issues, although that ones resolution wasn't 16:9. I have a feeling that it is something to do with a driver that I haven't installed but I don't know what to look for. There is one ATI technologies update which I have been trying to download but it has been giving me issues and not working. Apart from that one thing there isn't really anything else I can think of. I will try and install this update and see after that. Thanks

[EDIT]
Ok I installed that update that almost broke my computer and it fixed the problem. HOWEVER, and this is a big however. My computer doesn't seem to recognise my ATI drivers any more and therefore is using the backup one. This was the problem that stopped me from getting that last update in the first place and it seems that its the fix that breaks something more important. Anyway thanks for helping. That's one fix leading to another problemHi again turbomike135

We might be able to help you better and point you to the correct one, Thanks Mike It is the dv6-6023TX module. It's almost a year old so its still fairly new. This is the first major issue I have had with it.Good morning again turbomike135

Here is the link to HP there are 2 different video drivers 1 is AMD and 1 is Intel just download the one you have and considering you said that ATI poped up needing updating just download the AMD / ATI (same company by the way just in case you don't know that) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5079569#N376

Plus just in case you don't know both the resolutions that you posted are both 16:9 (widescreen)1920x1080 and 1366x768 they are just different sizes.

Please let us know how you MAKE out, Mike  Well the problem seems to be fixed so hopefully it will stay that way thanks for your help!

Solve : using dust blower on laptop vent?

Answer»

I have a large dust blower that I've been using on a desktop PC. I want to use it to blow air through the fan vents of my laptop (after turning it off) because I where I live right now, cannot find the compressed air that can fit in the vent holes and IM not confident about opening the laptop cover. Will that cause damage? If so, what kind? Please help.  This term " large dust blower" is far to vague to offer comment as to the viability of whatever it is you may be contemplating using for the dust removal. However there are certain things that should be considered when doing the process.Such as you should ensure that the fan(s) are immobilized as over revving them can cause failure.  If at all possible i WOULD try to provide the ability for the dislodged dirt to exit the computer as otherwise you may just MOVE it around. Just in case it is an option if computer store access is not available for the compressed air often they can also be found at automotive supply outlets or ordered online.truenorthIm assumeing your blowing it out an not in.  Other wise, it will collect in there an cause, a potential fireThanks.I agree with truenorth about "large dust blower" being far to vague. Along with the precautions already mentioned, on a low humidity day - if this is a non-grounded rotary type blower unit, it can create a static electrical charge when turning, which, if discharged to your grounded computer, can cause catostrophic damage to many of the COMPUTERS internal components resulting in a WORTHLESS machine or an expensive repair.

Solve : The keyboard?

Answer»

On my keyboard I have a button which is marked by the percentage sign for the upper case and the Euro sign next to the number 5 for the LOWER case.

How to activate the Euro sign plse?  Have tried using Shift, Ctrl, Alt but no success.

Many THANKS for kindness.

On my keyboard I have a button which is marked by the percentage sign for the upper case and the Euro sign next to the number 5 for the lower case.

My European layout Microsoft keyboard has the euro symbol on the key that normally types 4, and when shifted, types $ (dollar sign). To get euros €€€€€€ before I press it I hold down the Alt Gr key which is immediately to the right of the space bar. Does your keyboard have an Alt Gr key? Or a right Alt key? If so, give it a try. If you have neither an Alt Gr key or a right Alt key, try holding down Ctrl and Alt at the same time.

I have the ctrl the Shift, and the Alt keys but I have had no success playing about with them.  Any other suggestion plse?

By the way, if I hold down the ctrl key, say, and press the key carrying the number 5 and the Euro sign, it will not type anything at all.

Many thanks.

Here is a introduction to keyboard layouts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout

Find the layout that matches your. Then go into the keyboard settings and set it for that layout. Chances are it's set to US or something other than what it should be which is why you're not getting the RESULTS you want.Accessed the keyboard layout which in my case is the US-International layout but still no solution.  It tells me (I quote) A diacritic key is activated by pressing and releasing it, then pressing the letter that requires a diacritic.  After the two strokes, the single character with diacritics is generated. Note that only certain letters (such  as vowels and n) can have diacritics in this way. (Unquote).

My problem:

(1)   What is meant by a diacritic key?

(2)    What i s meant by "the single character with diacritics"?

With renewed thanks, GUZEPPI (a very slow learner !)(1) A diacritic is an accent mark added above or below a letter. Letters with these are found in the alpabets used in many European languages. Examples include á, í, ó, ú, ý, Keyboards meant for those languages tend to have accented characters available by means of pressing shift plus another key simultaneously. However US English keyboards don't have the accented characters but if you apply the US International layout in your settings then  you can use the right Alt key as an AltGr key which supports many additional characters directly as an additional shift key, and uses keys ', `, ", ^ and ~ as dead keys used to generate characters with diacritics by pressing the appropriate key, then the letter on the keyboard.

(2) The "single character with diacritics" is the final, accented character which appears after the procedure described above.

Once again, many thks, but I still cannot manage.

I have been told to hit the alt button, then press the keys for the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 8 and finally the key showing the euro sign.   Only the number 5 prints. No success.

Have tried holding down alt and the shift key while hitting the key showing the euro sign
No success either.

Have tried other combinations using all the keys mentioned above.  No success either.

I am indeed a slow learner !

Yr kindness and patience are much appreciated.

GUZEPPIHave you got two alt keys on your keyboard? One each side of the space bar? If so. press the one on the right and at the same time press the euro key. Alternatively if you only have one Alt key press Ctrl and the Alt key TOGETHER and then press the euro key.

To use alt and numbers, you have to hold down the left or only Alt key, and without lifting that finger, type the series of numbers USING THE KEYPAD and finally release the Alt key.
First of all, My thanks as ever.

Yes, your method now worked.

Solve : help connecting hdd to pc?

Answer»

Hi, all.
I'm attempting to connect a hdd that was intially an internal drive (came with pc) to a working pc to view it's contents. First I need to know, if this is really even possible. Second is there a cable I can use to connect it to something without taking anything apart (like a flashdrive CONNECTING).
I woud assume I need some information about the hdd to know the correct cable to use.
manufacturer: toshiba
Model number, etc. are unknown. I cannot tell what numbers are suffciencant on the hdd, too many. Toshiba also does not have a directory on their site for products/models.

thanks to anyone who provides any feedbackyes this is possible and it is relatively EASY get your working computer and take the side cover off, usually one or two screws in the back to remove, slide the cover off and you will see the power supply and the motherboard and various wires going to different things. First you need to make sure the HDD you want to check has the same kind of connector that is being used on the HDD that is in the computer you using,SATA or IDE you will be able to see the difference if they are different you might get lucky and there will be one already in there not being used, if not you will need an adapter to make them compatible make sure all power is disconnected from the computer and let it sit for several minutes to let the CAPS DISSIPATE then hook your HDD you want to look at and power up everything as you normally would and see if it will power up, let us know what happens..................gettingthere Quote

Is it a Toshiba desktop or laptop? What kind of hard drive, is it SATA or IDE? If its a desktop hard drive, you would need an IDE/SATA to USB adaptor. If its a laptop HD, you would need the 2.5/3.5 hard drive enclosure to USB 2.0.
Well I finally found some information.

hard drive type: ATA
orgin pc: Toshiba Satellite A505 (so laptop)

The pc I am trying to connect it to is a laptop.

Yes, it's an external box. Pop the drive in it, plug it in to the USB. Should be recognized automatically in most cases. That about does it for now at least. If anyone knows a cheap place to buy this product from let me know.

Solve : best router/repeater for apartment building?

Answer»

I have ordered and returned three different repeaters that did not have sufficient power to boost a signal from my apartment building's LAN.  (The local broadband coverage with AT&T dropped so often [over 40 times in one month] that I discontinued my service after three months.)  I now have to go to the main lobby to get onto the Internet.

The office's LAN seems to be fairly consistent and stable, but it simply does not have the power to reach the approximately 150-200 feet to my room on the 3rd floor.  I don't mind paying $200-$300 if necessary for a repeater, but my hit-and-miss approach to finding a product that has not been over-hyped is getting old.  Even after researching on the Internet, I'm still confused.  Every site seems to promise the moon, but their product has not worked.

Please HELP me find something that works. The practical range of 802.11x wireless is more like 30 meters, about 100 feet under average conditions. The government does not allow higher power.
The best OPTION for ab apartment building  or hotel is to use  the co-ax cable of the TV system to send Internet into every room.
The cable companies do this kind of stuff. Typical use is one device coves two apartments. The DOWNLOAD speed is often 10 Mbps, much better than DSL.

Ignore the results you find in Google search. Using a repeater in en environment that already has cable installed is pointless.

Talk to the cable company.

EDIT: In the USA it is the FCC that stops you from using more power on wireless. And the same agency prevents Comcast from giving CONSUMERS the best possible deals on Internet, TV and local phone service in an apartment complex.
Go Figure.
Thank you for your information.  I see now that I have to go the cable route.

Solve : Computer randomly crashing, please help.?

Answer»

Hi guys. This is my first post so please forgive me if i make any mistakes.

Cpu: I5 2500K
Motherboard: MSI P67A-G43
RAM- 16 GB (4x4) GSkill Ripjaw
Graphics Card: Gigabyte HD 7970 (Model: GV-R797OC-3GD)
PSU: Rosewill Lightning 800W

About 3 months after i bought my HD 7970 this past January, my system started to crash with screens similar to this:

I believed it was the graphics card causing this problem and did some research and saw that crash screens with black vertical lines are usually caused by the graphics card. So i opened an RMA with Gigabyte and sent it in. About a month later i got word that their tests had yielded no crashes and it was being sent back to me. I have tested my CPU and i can't figure out what else is wrong with my system. I had opened up a forum at Tomshardware and i had answered questions there. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/361230-33-7970-gigabyte-help#t2724172    With this information, is there anyway you guys can help me? It is very frustrating having my computer crash on me up to 15 times in a day.

Thanks, help would be appreciated.
Good morning jsksjs

The issue is a graphic problem

#1.. have you tried another LCD cable?
#2.. have you tried another LCD
#3.. what is in the event viewer anything tied to the video drivers?
#4.. if it is random it may be a power issue like a PS (power supply)

Hope this helps, please let us know how youmake out. Mike After my card was sent back to me, i did a clean install of my system. After the clean install, the crashes have happened MORE often now. I have not tried another LCD or switched cables because the screen doesn't only turn that color: the whole system crashes. After about 5 seconds with the screen, the audio either cuts or goes into an infinite loop. I'm not sure how to test my PSU. I believe i have to use a volt meter but the thing is, i really don't want to risk taking out my PSU and messing around with it. How exactly do i find info on the crashes in the event viewer?

Thanks.welcome back jsksjs

If the issue PC is windows 7 that is in your profile.

Click on the start then in the box "event" a list will populate and click on "event viewer" then click on "windows logs" then click on "system" and look in there red "X" will show errors around the time and date when you had the issue does it say anything like "ATI" or "Radeon" and if so what are some of the errors.

Mike  Hi again jsksjs

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Thanks, I'll try this. One question though. Does this mean any driver i download from AMD will make my system crash? I had the LATEST drivers from AMD.Newer drivers are not always better drivers neccessarily...

Drivers can have issues like corruption / newly added software programs installation can affect them / virus / compatibility with other programs etc.

Now you installed the Chipset drivers first then the video drivers?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike  Yes, i installed the chipset drivers first, then the video drivers. The thing is though, is there any way to find where the driver corruption is originating? I don't want to only use these outdated drivers.

Thanks.(Bump) Ok i have had NO crashing since REVERTING to the original drivers on the Gigabyte website. I am so confused right now. Is there anyway to find out what is causing every other version of the AMD drivers to crash my computer? I prefer the new drivers because my games run so much more efficiently, but i can't run them because they cause my PC to crash

Solve : black screen-fried motherboard??

Answer»

HI, Mydesktop pc would not boot and I have a  black screen.  Repair tech says the motherboard is fried, and suggest new computer or placing hard drive in a case  to use as external drive, and  I can boot from it. So all my data is there. Does that mean the external drive would connect to the old pc tower?
Said replacing motherboards don't usually last., plus cost would be near that of building or buying new one.
Really need to get to my Quicken files.

I am not sure I want to buy another desktop, maybe just a laptop now .
I do have access to a laptop but don't want to install anything that I can't uninstall since I have to return the LAPPTOP soon.
Suggestions?

Thank you, Mimi Quote from: mimi on July 07, 2012, 03:21:22 AM

... Does that mean the external drive would connect to the old pc tower?...
No.  It means that you remove the hard drive from the old computer & connect it to the new computer.  If the new computer is a desktop, you connect it to the motherboard as a secondary drive.  If the new computer is a laptop, you put the old drive in a USB enclosure & connect it to a USB port.  Either way, you then copy your files to the new computer's hard drive or use them directly from the old hard drive.Hi mimi

I think you should consult with another technician. if you take the hard drive out of the faulty computer and put it into an external case you will be able to access the data but not the programs from the old computer.

You don't say anything about the type, make, model of the old computer it maybe that is old enough that if it was repaired other things would go wrong.
Also the Windows version is important if it is what's called an oem version which is on the windows label it may not be possible to transfer to a different computer.

I'm really surprised the tech didn't transfer the drive to another computer and get you up and running so that you could consider your OPTIONS. Perhaps they don't do that where you are.

You may be able to find the same computer used that the drive would work in, at least that would give you some time to consider the next step.

Lisa
Both CC and LM have given you very sound advice. If i may also contribute. Not to say that it is impossible for the diagnosis of a "fried" MB to be the case. However if i had a dollar for every-time i witnessed that statement from an alleged expert i would be greatly financially advantaged. I would urge you to be patient and do some things 1st. For instance tell US more (as much as you can) as to the events that led up to this failure. Don't assume it is insignificant tell us everything. Changes in hardware/software--changes in the way the computer had been behaving--any new noises or absence of sounds that had normally been there? Certainly a 2nd hopefully credible opinion as LM has said is a must. Please also answer the rest of the questions she has asked.truenorth  Thank you LM, CC  and Truenorth.

I think it is too late for me to do anything but buy a new computer. It is  a Gateway 510xl, windows xp, and would not boot, but I could hear fans running.  Black screen.

The tech notified me that he has already turned the hard drive to an external  drive. NOw I need to purchase  a pc quickly.  I am sure I have my Quicken and other program installation cds. The  tech said he would transfer all files from the external drive to my new pc,for one low cost, however, I don't want to transfer everything, because there are duplicates on the drive.

Thanks for all of the answers , you all are wonderful.
MimiJust before we leave you. Do not assume that because you have the software discs that were used to install certain programs on the gateway that they will necessarily work on your new computer. Often software can either be limited to the computer it was sold with or also can have a limited number of installations possible after which it will not function. In some instances you may be able to persuade the software manufacturer (because of factors) to EXTEND the number of installations.Quicken has introduced new editions of their software from the one you probably have and may only be interested in having you upgrade.truenorthIt its a dedicated video card, they could try swap testing it if they have not done that yet. I've checked online for your gateway desktop specification and it comes with an AGP video card. http://support.gateway.com/s/VIDCARD/ATI/6002443/6002443nv.shtmlI too was hoping we would have some time to try alternatives to replacing the computer. But it appears the O/P is either under some time constraints or has been persuaded by the "technician" to buy a new computer.truenorthI am interested in this because I have apparently the same problem.

Power gets to PC, fan starts, USB is powered, power light, a flash of HD activity, tries CD drives, but no progress, just a black screen, with no disk activity other than the initial.  There are no beeps.

I need to try to start up 10's of times - the number varies - before it will power up.  Have you tried many times to turn your PC on ?

I have made various changes to the PC shortly (some months) before this problem, but the problem didn't emerge immediately - some months later. I think it's got worse over the last 7-8 months.

Possible 'quick' solutions, which you might consider (not all of which I have tried):
Power supply - defective or under powered.
Fan problem (have tried replacing the fan though)
Cables not seated properly (I have tried reseating them though)
Missing Northbridge heatsink
Short underneath motherboard (new idea) - possibly caused by 'lost' Northbridge heatsink anchor point (a loop of metal)
Defective Capacitors on motherboard (a difficult job, but it can be done)

Solve : Burning To DVD+Rs On An External CD-Rom Drive?

Answer»

I've been wanting to re-do my computer and want to save my files first before doing this since many are important and can't be acquired elsewhere. Just the other day was going to burn all of my files to various DVD+Rs I have through an external CD-ROM drive (the built-in one on my computer died last year). However when I go to do this nothing happens. I get a message saying to please insert a disc in drive E and I do this, but nothing happens when I try to burn or transfer the files. What do I have to do to be able to burn my files on my external CD-ROM with no problems?A DVD+R disk in a CD-ROM drive? Did you really mean that? (You wrote DVD+R twice and CD-ROM three times)

1. A CD-ROM drive can't write to disks. That's what the "ROM" part means.
2. A DVD disk won't be seen by a CD drive.

To "burn your files with no problems" you need to get the right kind of disk drive.

Good afternoon Shadowrath

Everything that SALMON Trout is 100% true.

From reading your post it seems that you bought / borrowed blank DVD's?

Just in-case you do not know (I am not trying to be a wise guy ) here is a description of the different types of drives / disc's

DVD (means digital Versatile disc)
For DVD+R or a DVD-R are just a one time use. So once you put the data on the disc and it is closed that is it. The (-R) is a older format and is sometimes better suited for "older" drives like when DVD was first brought out into the industry. The (+R) is the newer format and is pretty much the most popular now days.

For DVD-RW is the same as above but the "W" is a reusable and data can be added at a latter time. Plus the disc can be formatted and reused up to a to a thousand times.

For DVD+R DL the "DL" means "dual layer" in which holds double the data a DVD can hold.

For a CD (COMPACT Disc)

For ROM (read only memory)

Here is how much each one can hold (this can vary on use and data)

CD's can hold up to 700 megabytes of data, or about 70 minutes of audio.
DVD's (either + or - or RW) can hold 4.7 gig's of data or a simple movie
DVD+/-R-DL can hold 8.5 gig"s of data or a movie that has say extra FEATURES like previews etc

You also may see some "blank CD's labeled as MUSIC CD" and sometimes will cost more but these are basically the same as a regular CD and just look nicer and the extra cost is for royalties to the music companies. You can use a regular CD for almost anything like: music, pictures, personal files just about anything you have so long the ITEMS you are saving is not more than 700 megabytes.

DVD drives can use / see any size disc from CD to DVD's
CD Drive can only see / use CD's only

Hopefully this helps you, Mike

CD's can hold up to 700 megabytes of data, or about 70 minutes of audio.
Interestingly, there are several sizes for CDs/CD-ROMs that are standardized.

The 'original' size was 74 minutes, and could store 70 minutes of CD Audio. As a CD-ROM, that translates to 650MB of data. There are also larger discs, which I believe are part of the "Orange Book" (same as CD-ROM, to my recollection) standard, which hold 80 Minutes of CD Audio, or 700MB of Data. (also those smaller 8cm disks that hold 185MB or 21 minutes).

There are also lots of completely non-standard (as in, not in any Color book specification) sizes, such as 99 Minutes.

Another interesting tidbit about the Music CD-R versus other CD-Rs thing; there isn't actually any evidence that any of the cost goes to the RIAA. The actual difference lies merely upon bytes stored within the sub channels of the blank disk. The differentiation really is only visible if you burn with something other than a general-purpose PC/Mac machine, such as a separate CD-Burner. Some stereo systems allow you to record from, say, a tape, aux input, etc and burn a disc. Some of them will not let you burn to a generic blank data CD-R. This can seem on the surface as an evil plot by the RIAA, but it's actually a decision made by the manufacturers of the device; they only want their device to be used with brand name media they have approved. I would GUESS the idea was to reduce support calls from generic low-quality media problems, but I doubt it helps since those same people will probably call wondering why they can't use them at all.

My mistake, I meant I used an external CD drive for my computer. It works fine as I'm able to rip from it with no problems.

The discs I'm using are a DVD+R that can hold up to 4.7 GB of files on them and the drive I'm using plays both DVDs and CDs, and I've ripped from both with no problems at all. Why is it I'm unable to burn files to any of the discs? Is there a specific way to do it? Quote from: Shadowrath on July 29, 2012, 03:02:42 AM

Is it a reading and burning drive or just a reading drive?

Tell us the make and model or look on the drive

This says "ROM" - can only read, NOT write

These say "RW" can read and write

Mine says rewritable on it.is it compatible with +R disks?
Good afternoon Shadowrath

Yes I have seen DVD burners that would be able to rip data from a disc but NOT write any data to the disc it just means the drive is failing.

If you take this external drive and use it on another PC do you still have the same results? if so the drive is going bad

Thankfully enough the DVD burners are cheap around me the cost is about 30 -35 $ for a OEM DVD-RW.

Good luck, Mike Maybe we should ask what kind of budget he has.
An easy solution is to buy an external Hard Drive. Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 30, 2012, 08:33:04 AM

I can't find where it says anywhere if it is or not (and yes I have the manual). It mentions in the manual discs can be burned in it. I presume any sort of DVD disc can be burned since it didn't mention specific ones. Quote from: Shadowrath on July 31, 2012, 06:27:37 AM

I have already asked for the brand and model. if you eventually provide these, we can check.

This looks like a good match for it. Though it's hard to tell for certain due to the sole picture provided.Hasn't it got a label? In fact, you wrote this

I have the manual

So how come you can't tell us what make and model it is?

Solve : I got a believed chip-set problem, but needs a bios thought?

Answer»

My System:
-Intel i5 760 1156 socket
-GA-H55-USB3 gigabyte motherboard
Intel H55/rev.2.0
Socket1156/PCI-E2.0x16/ATX
4 DDR3 Dual-CH/8-CH HD Audio
GbE LAN/8 SATA 3Gb/s/2 USB3.0
-Nvidia 250 GTS
-8GB Ram (I know way more then needed)
-2 Fans Internal 1 Large Fan External
700W OCZ MODXSTREAM-PRO Power Supply

My problem:
My computer crash's a lot, and I mean a lot.  I had an asus motherboard but it died and I replaced everything and got a gigabyte M-board but the chip-set.  My problem is now it keeps freezing or blue screen of deathing me, I don't even need to be doing anything, it just happens and at random.  Sometimes I get a few days out of it, sometimes it crash's out every 5 mins.  I ran a core test and 3 of them work fine, the other was hit or miss.
I would like a bios set up that would or should work for this pc, don't know if that's the problem, but hoping for MIRACLE's here.   I checked the pc hardware more times then any of you could ever ask me, I even had a second, third, and 4th, and 5th, and 6th opinion.  Everything's set up the way it should be, the only thing it could be is the chip-set.  But as this is an older chip that's no longer selling and I have little money to replace everything.  So if I can find a setup for bios or anything that might salve the problem I could use it.

Your problem:
If you give me a stupid, or simple answer that likely has nothing to do with the problem, I'm going to virtually bitchslap you.Good afternoon CanadianMonkeys and welcome to CH

OK from what I am understanding in your post you have run a test on the CPU and 3 cores passed OK but the 4th?

But have you run any MEMORY tests, bad memory (1 stick) can cause you to have all kinds of issues or if there is miss-matched memory that have different timings etc.

Have you run any harddrive tests?

If the CPU is bad most Intel CPU's have a 3year warranty

What OS and what bit (i.e windows 7 64 bit) and if so you can only use 64 bit drivers using 32 bit drivers will (1) not work or (2) blue screen.

If all hardware memory, HD, CPU etc pass and say you think the MoBo is bad that is cheap. YOu can find a board re-use all of your hardware CPU, Memory, Case etc.

Please check the above and let us know how you make out. Mike Download BlueScreenView:

when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyThis is my blue screen report.  As you can see I've had a few of them

=deleted by AllanI deleted your Blue Screen log. You posted the wrong info. Please follow the instructions exactly
Ok well I did actually do everything the way you said to do it.  If it came out wrong, I'm sorry, but you will need to retype what to do if this is not it.
This is exactly what it gives me when I do as you say, not trying to be a jerk or anything here, but this is what came out when I did it.

Or I found this on there messing around, if this is what your looking for then your directions are wrong.  Either way I ordered a new chip, should be here by the weekend.  Would be nice to salve this problem anyways but I'm sick of not being able to play my BF3.

Good afternoon CanadianMonkeys and welcome to CH

Mike

THANK you Mike,  please have someone slap you for me. Quote from: CanadianMonkeys on August 08, 2012, 01:59:58 AM

Solve : Bios Not detecting Sata HDD?

Answer»

My pc isnt DETECTING my hdd in Bios

im running an ASUS psn -d mb, with 4 g ram, an intel dual core processor and a pci ati sapphire card, running win 7,untill yesteday i had two internal hdd one western digtal 250G and one seagate 1tb both sata drives,my computer froze up and i restarted, and this is where the issues started, got a bsod saying unmountable boot volume, so opened up the case to see if there was any loose connections etc, not that i could see.

so turned everything back on and then only one sata drive was showing my dvd drive wasnt showing up either, so swapped the cables about too see if that was the problem, nope still no joy

now no drives are showing have swapped out my sata dvd drive for an ide one and that is showing up in bios,

have try to put in a ide hdd but that isn't showing up either

i have TRIED to see if the drives are getting power but dont think they are( can't hear them spinning up or anything)

so im at a complete loss where to turn next, im thinking it may be a faulty power lead that isnt getting jucie to the drives, everything else is powered up, systems fans x 2 ,cpu fan, card fan, and ide dvd drive are all getting power.have MANAGED to boot using a external hdd with linux on it, so it shouldnt be a mb issue as then it wouldnt boot at all.

Any help or pointers would be great I had a similar issue a few months back. My PSU unit weakened and couldnt handle my 2 HD's + everything else. I replaced PSU and all was well except for that I had to reformat my one hard drive that must have been written too on insuficient power.

Prior to swapping PSU my system would freeze up, bsod, etc until I removed 1 of 2 HDD's. I then added a different SATA HDD and symptoms came back. Swapped a cheapie no name PSU for a 460watt thermaltake power supply and then all was well. Thanks for quick reply will have to buy a new psu at the end of the month when I get paid and see if that makes a different.

Solve : Harddrives Brand?

Answer»

I was THINKING of replace my one harddrive so that I can use it too put my movies an shows on.  Just wondered if Hitachi were good DRIVES or Samsung.  I all ways used Maxtor Drives in the machines I builtHonestly, it does not really matter.

They will all work together. They are all reliable.

As long as you have extra power and data cables in your machine, any hard drive will be fine.Just wondered if they were good realiable brands Quote from: Ryuk on August 11, 2012, 10:25:34 AM

Just wondered if they were good realiable brands

YES of course. There are no unreliable hard drive brands, not really.

Then is ESATA differnt then SATA?  I was going to GET a Desktop Docking station for it too Quote from: Ryuk on August 11, 2012, 10:43:10 AM
Then is ESATA differnt then SATA?  I was going to get a Desktop Docking station for it too

ESATA is simply a way of using SATA drives externally.

I'm locking this thread just because you are wasting our TIME - again - and again - and again.

Solve : Old school printer ribbon?

Answer»

Hi All,
Here is one form the olden days. I want to know if any one has some detail specs on the ink or color number of the old print ribbons. What I have is a production scanner that is having a very hard time  picking up the pale blue text on MONEY orders. I want to see if I can get a calibration sheet that is more geared toward the pale blues to help setup the machine.

Thanks
Spoiler
Why do you scan money orders? Dont money orders have mag ink on them like checks? Or you WORK for a business etc which stores DIGITAL images of the cancelled money orders, and its too light, in which production scanner doesnt sound like an illegal device?

I work for a company that keeps COPIES of checks and money orders in storage. The money orders have MICR lines like check but the light blue ink which shows the amount of the money order sometimes gets scanned as a blank area on the image. The scanners can read the checks ok but its the light ink on the money orders that is causing the problem.

I am trying to figure out a better way to setup the scanner to pickup the light color. I had hoped that I could get a chart with a sample of light blues to help set the scanner up.

Hope you DIDNT mind the questions

But in the past when scanning light colors like pastels and yellows on white background etc, I have found that I had to adjust the greyscale of the scanner to avoid losing those colors. Does this scanner have a greyscale adjustment?Yes it has a grayscale. We scan in grayscale 100% of the time. If we darken the camera to try to pickup the light blue but then the checks are really dark and almost unreadable.

Or Google 'color charts'

Solve : Older HP ProLiant Servers: Ram Upgrades?

Answer»

Ok, so i have several old G1 ProLiant servers that take the PC133R type memory. I remember reading somewhere that you should use only HP branded ram in the servers. Now, before i go about on ebay finding some ram and taking these servers OFFLINE, is the HP branded ram a requirement to boot the SERVER, or is it just suggested by HP?

My systems are:
2X HP Proliant DL 580 G1 (One currently at about 8G ram (16X512), The other at only 1(8x128))
4X HP Proliant DL 360 G1 (Three at 0.5G (4X128) and one at 1G (4X256))

They currently run Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS

I also have a few other servers, and am wondering if those can also become upgraded at some point. Thanks. Anyone telling you it has to be HP RAM is fulll of Bull...

HP doesn't even make RAM.Well, what i was meaning is with their logo on it, not that they made it.

All the ram i have pulled from a few servers has had the Compaq logo on a sticker placed on it, and that in combination of reading this somewhere has me curious.

ThanksGood evening zeroburn and welcome back

What patio is telling is 100% correct.

I know what you are talking about.

PC133r is registered. From past experience older servers that take PC133 ecc / r memory must be done in matched pairs and some of them back then had instruction sets in the chip that is why they were so finicky.

HP only says that so you would buy the parts from them.

I can not really remember but some of the older DL servers took PC 100 also but be careful older server memory people will PUT the ** to you as far as price.

If you want new memory just go to crucial and use there configuration tool for the part numbers or go to kingston and do the same thing. I would check there web sites and believe what they say over rumors.

Hope this helps, Mike       Just anting to be sure before i do anything. Thanks. Registered RAM is hard to find.  Good Luck!We had an old HP ProLiant ML350 G2 PIII 1.2GHz/1 GB RAM Server and we ended up USING EDGE Memory from PC Connection with no troubles. I'd go with new Ram vs used from ebay.  Not hard to find, still available. We got our Ram upgrade in about 3 weeks from PC connection 2 years ago, they had to special order it as they dont stock older Ram. http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=266625

Solve : Which are the best 3 Motherboard brands compatible with Intel Ivy Bridge??

Answer»

Which are the best 3 BRANDS and in which order of preference (in terms of quality and technology lead) from all manufacturers of motherboards for these types and Models
CPU Socket Type: LGA 1155 - LGA 2011
Models: Z68 - Z77 and X79

Note:
1. I am LOOKING at motherboards with similar set of features
2. If Intel brand motherboard is not part of your choices please tell me why they do not make your short list. (aside from potential higher cost)

Thank youGood evening MSwhip and welcome to CH

OK honestly all the chipsets that you have list here are all good.

CPU socket either 1155, 1156 or 2011 I would SAY if you find something you LIKE just buy it. If you want try to future prof stay with 2011 that is the newest socket and it will be around longer.

Don't GET me wrong I love Intel CPU MoBo's but you can get AMD CPU for a little less so keep that in mind. AS far as performance AMD and Intel are pretty much equal. Some Intel CPU do somethings better and some AMD do somethings better. Now days all CPU's for the most part are so fast you would be happy with almost anything.

NO semtron CPU, AMD lower end CPU's and Intel Celeron's or single core CPU's. But that is just my opinion.

Hope this helps, Mike

Solve : Graphics card issues?

I am having a hard time playing games or much of anything on my computer. I updated all the drivers and it still has problems. My computer can't run Steam and multiple tabs in a browser at the same time. It can't play a 1080p video for longer than a minute without some serious lag and skipping. I've tried to play games like L4D2 and it lags and lags until it is just completely unusable. God forbid I try to run Steam and a livestream at the same time. It's very obnoxious and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Any help would be appreciated!Good evening notuslethe and welcome to CH

Thank you for the info you supplied so far but I do have a couple of questions for you

#1... Who's PS do you have and what is the wattage of it?
#2... When windows was installed did you use the windows 7 drivers or did you go to the manufacture web site for them or did you use the ones on the CD?
#3... Have you tried a different monitor to make sure the issues is not the LCD not being able to keep up with the refresh rate?
#4... When the drivers were installed just in case you are not aware of it they should be done as such.
Install the OS>then chipset drivers>video card drivers>lan drivers>sound drivers and if you have a modem do that last then install external drives, devices etc afterwards.
#5... Did the video card get plugged in with the PCIx 6 pin power plug?

Here is the link for the MoBo web site for the drivers http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro4/?cat=Download
Here is the link for the Video card web site just pick the OS and bit version http://www.zotacusa.com/downloads?cat=#downloadscontent

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike
 1. My power source is the generic source that came with the case and it is 500W.
2. I used the Windows 7 drivers
3. I don't have a different monitor to try. I've tried asking around, but my friends all have laptops.
4. I'm pretty sure I installed the drivers like this: OS>video card>chipset. That's not the order you gave - is there some way I can fix that?
5. Yes, the video card was plugged in the with PCIx 6 pin power plug.

Thanks for your help!Good evening notuslethe and welcome back

Yes this is a easy fix just go to the manufacture web site and download the drivers for your equipment.

I am not trying to be a wise guy but in #2 you said that you used W7 drivers and in #4 you said "I'm pretty sure I installed the drivers like this: OS>video card>chipset."

If you meant to say maybe something like this you installed W7, then the video card & last chipset drivers off the supplied CD /DVD's if you did that I would go to the web sites listed and get the newest drivers for your PC's parts and then just remove the drivers that you installed and reboot if needed.

Then when you are back at the desktop just install the drivers that you downloaded starting with the motherboard drivers on out.
Just start with the chipset drivers>video card drivers>lan drivers>sound drivers and if you have a modem do that also. There is no need to redo the OS.

Then all should be good, please let us know how you make out. Mike  You didn't sound like a wiseguy - I totally get what you were saying and how I was being confusing. Yes, I installed all the drivers off the included DVDs.

I've downloaded all the new drivers, but I don't know how to uninstall the old drivers. I looked up how to do it, but I'm afraid I will uninstall something important. I went into the device manager and revealed the hidden drivers and then uninstalled the faded ones, but I'm unsure if that's enough or I should uninstall more.

Also, I tried running different games, and when I tried to run Dragon Age Origins, my computer just shut off after a few minutes. Do you think my power source could also be at FAULT?

Thanks for your help!Good evening notuslethe and welcome back

You are very welcome.

The chipset drivers and video card drivers etc just go to control panel > uninstall programs if you see the name listed click on the item and look up top it will say remove / uninstall then if asked reboot the PC then afterwards when you are back at the desktop just install the chipset drivers first > video card and try that that should work.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Sorry it's been a while since I replied, but I've been so busy!

I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled, but nothing changed. I'm still having difficulty playing games. Good evening notuslethe and welcome back

OK if all the drivers were updated from the manufactures web site and in order do you or have you gotten any errors / bsod messages.

Open the device manager is there any yellow or red items / icons then you may want to look while you are in the device manager look up top for view and then show hidden devices is there any of them with a yellow ! or red x.

If you still have not found any thing yet you may want to remove the add-on video card and plug your monitor into the onboard plugs and see how it does. Yes i know it will not be as good as your card but this would just be a test.

Solve : Not sure what I did,?

Answer»

So yesterday  I was given a pc that was unknown whether or not it worked. I brught it home and looked, it was missing a few parts. I used parts from my PC to check it, namely my video card and ram that I knew was good. The PC did nothing. No data to my monitor.

I decided to try another way. I put my equipment back in my own pc, but switched the processors (same socket) to see if maybe that was what was wrong with this MYSTERY PC. It once again did nothing, so I assumed it was the processor. I switched my chip back into my PC, and now it STILL does nothing. I then unhooked all IDE and SATA connectors, just trying to get to bios. Nothing.

Any ideas? Did I fry my chip or motherboard? Diagnostic advice? So you had 1 bad computer... mixed parts and put original parts back to each system and now have 2 dead computers?Good evening thegreyfox and welcome to CH

I am with DaveLembke so you are saying you know have 2 dead PC's???

In over 13 years i have only replaced a bad CPU about 6 times. Very rarely does a CPU go bad.

Chances being the CPU when it was put back in your current PC that it is not in correctly or pins may be bent, or the memory is not seated, or the video card is not seated or a POWER plug is not in or seated all the way.

With the PC that you were given you never stated if you had any lights on the front of the case or anything or even if the fans turned on or if you got any beeps etc. With the info you put in the post it may be a PS (power supply) or motherboard.

What model PC were you given? (i.e HP A6400f etc)

Hope to hear from soon, Mike

... or overvolted...

hmm, did you USE anti-static equipment when exchanging hardware ??And each time carefully scrape off old thermal COMPOUND and reapply new on each cpu, and take care not to flex unduly or crack either motherboard when clipping heatsink down? And check in BIOS that voltages and clock are suitable for the cpu just installed? And check that the motherboard and bios version on each motherboard was suitable for the swapped cpu?

Diagnostic advice: proceed as per new build, rebuild your old PC with its own previous parts, CPU (check no bent/broken pins, old heatsink compound removed, new heatsink compound properly applied, heatsink properly clipped down, fan connected and after power up, verify is rotating) 1 stick of RAM properly seated, no drives connected, check all connections and modules for good connection/seated properly, see if it boots, then if it does, add components. Use static precautions at all times. Stay calm, don't panic, always power down before inserting/removing parts. Go slowly and think about what you are doing.

Possibility: bad PSU or motherboard on gifted PC cooked first its own old CPU and/or RAM and now your good CPU and/or RAM. Or bad CPU cooked both PSUs or... or... or... etc. Swapping components AROUND can be a good way of killing multiple PCs... Never use your main or only good PC as a swap source or host for suspect parts. Old PC given away with parts missing may have suffered terminal failure followed by salvage of anything worth having. Reminds me of when my daughter put a goldfish she won at funfair shooting gallery into the same tank as her tropical fish. All dead in 2 days.

CPUs or other components (e.g. RAM) may very rarely fail in use in the equipment they were assembled in if it is run within spec and not abused, but they often fail after removal and reinstalling, especially if conditions are unfavorable as outlined in this thread.

The barebone set up is a SFF going by the part number at newegg and only has a 200 watt PS most video cards need 350 + Plus any cards have to be low profile ones.

The memory is to much for the MoBo it maxes out out 8 gigs

Solve : I'm in need of some help regarding hardware upgrades for my PC?

Answer»

Hi

I'm in deep need of some help. I currently have a semi-decent PC for GAMING but I feel like it is time to upgrade because I am starting to get fps issues and such with the new and most demanding titles.

Here is what I've got now:

AMD Athlon 7550 dual core 2.5GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
4GB RAM (DDR2)
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Rev 2.0 AM2 Motherboard
650W Power Supply
Windows 7 Ultimate

Now from what I know AM2 processors are outdated so I would be looking for AM3 or intel, however they don't work with my motherboard so I guess a new motherboard is required. If that is the case that motherboard would probably need  DDR3 RAM so I would have to buy these as well as the processor. So that's 3 things that I need to buy so far, processor, RAM and motherboard... right?

Could anyone reccomend me any good processors and MOTHERBOARDS (I've got around £500 budget at max but that's for the whole upgrade not just a few parts)

I'm also having thoughts on replacing my graphics card with something like the nvidia gtx 560(or is there anything better that doesn't cost significantly more and does better job?)

Or shall I just SCRAP everything to *censored* and buy a gaming PC for £800-900

Thanks in advance.Good evening tinkytinky and welcome to CH

Before I can give you any suggestions I do have a couple of questions

How big is your PS (powers supply) and who's is it?

What OS (operating system) and bit version do you have?

What size is your case a mini ATX or full size ATX?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike hartbeatmr thanks for your quick reply, I have updated my ORIGINAL post with what you asked and my size is full atxI hope nobody has forgotten this thread Good evening tinkytinky and welcome back to CH

That MoBo does take AM3 CPU's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128342 if you want to save money why not just get a faster CPU if you want and a faster video card?

What bit version of W7 UT are your going to use 64 bit? and if you are going to stay with your MoBo it will take up to 8 gigs even knowing you may want a newer board with DDR3.

You have a nice set up and with a couple of changes now then later upgrade the MoBo later on. The options are endless it is up to you.

Hope this HELPS, Mike

Solve : Service packs for windows xp home?

Answer»

At least 10 years ago I purchased a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP home installed.  I have performed a clean re installation using the installation disk provided at that time.  It unfortunately has no service packs included on the installation disk;   no sp1, sp1a, sp2 nor sp3.  I have a COPY of sp2 from an xp pro installation disk but it will not allow a good install without sp1 or sp1a.  I would like to get a stand-alone copy of sp1, or sp1a so that I may be able to enjoy later versions of internet explorer (I have ie6, I would like ie8.)  YouTube is unavailable without later versions of internet explorer.

I have tried the usual channels without success.  Microsoft no longer provided service packs for windows xp.

I have tried to install ubuntu, but no success there either.  (I wonder why, because I had success on other machines without a problem, but this is another issue altogether)

I want a stand alone copy (or working application) to install the service packs without having to go on line and downloading "their version".

I am apalled at the many junk programs many web sites want to load one's machine, just to solve your problem, which probably won't solve that problem anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Wendellhttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/service-packsI recently went thru this on an older PC i was fixing for a friend...spent 1/2 day trying to find SP1 to no avail....
MS should be shot for this...but i'll let that gripe go for now.

I wound up tracking down an XP CD with SP1 included and fixed it from there...may be your only choice,If your still unable to find SP1, I could probably track down a copy on my one archive external and post it up for download. At my last job I kept copies of all needed service packs for Windows 2000 Pro/Server and XP Home & Pro to bring systems forward without eating into network bandwidth to the www which was slow. Microsoft also had an option to receive service packs on CD by mail and I think I might also have the CDs. These days I use a slipstream SP3 for XP rebuilds Quote from: patio on September 10, 2012, 05:27:07 AM

Allan's link has "Windows XP Service Pack 1a Express Install (32-Bit) for End Users".
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19751And it does NOT run...it's the setup app for the full SP1 DLoad...trust me...i spent time goin down this road.

However feel free to try yourself.Today I again tried to install sp2 (no sp1 or sp1a) and again the computer went into gork mode; it would not stay on, it would not accept any input, the screen would come on and go off about every 5 seconds per cycle.  So Again I re-installed the original xp home system, and again we have a functional, but not fully functional, computer.  We have ie 6 which many web sites abhor, and we are fortunately able to operate my ham radio transceiver on psk with full control of the transceiver.  Also I can get on eham.com to look up ham CALLS, and can network with the other computers in the house.  Can't use youtube, google earth, etc.  TG I have more modern machines in the house which allow me to enjoy music; just want to have it all on all machines.  Thanks to all who gave me their opinions.  it MUST be that sp1 does not exist as a stand-alone file, only in the distant memory on microsoft's un-attainable servers.
Planned obsolescence is their goal.  I still write programs in line number basic, just for nostalgia.

WendellHave you tried simply going to Microsoft Updates?First thing I tried.....

WendellOK well I had to ask.

Did at least install the recommended updates from Microsoft Update?
(Not Drivers)

Maybe you have to go there twice, once to get SP1a or SP2 and then revisit to get SP3?I would take David up on his offer above...a file sharing site could be used.Hi

This is very strange as with winxp you should be able to install service packs starting with sp2 regardless of the original service pack.
When you try to update from Microsoft what error do you get ?.

As windows update service may not be running.

Windows xp sp2 is available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28
it's a good idea to keep these downloads saved somewhere safe . Quote

That's the crux of the issue...SP2 will NOT install without SP1 present...
SP1 is NOT available anymore from any MS site...

As i stated above i recently went thru all this to no avail.

He needs to find an original XP w/SP1 CD and either do a Repair or Fresh install in order to move forward.

As i SUGGESTED above to others you are more than welcome to try this on your own...you'll find out what i did after a full day at it. Quote from: patio on September 11, 2012, 04:42:32 PM

I found that out, too.  Wish I hadn't DELETED the SP1 download.Maybe SP2 is now a roll up of SP1 + SP2 the Microsoft website does say that you can start with either 1a or 2.

I know they did that with windows 2000, SP4 was a roll up of 1,2,3 and whatever additions were added to form SP4.

Not doubting what you're saying Patio.

Solve : Random Computer Lock Up?

Answer»

Hello everyone.  I am an experienced computer builder.  I have one that has been my own personal PC for 3-4 years now.  Ever since building it, I have had intermittent lock-ups of the entire system.  Whatever screen it is on last when it decides to lock up is what I see upon walking in the room.  It never does it while I am working on it.  This always requires a press-hold/power-off system to recover from it.

At first, I thought it must be a hardware conflict.  However, I have replaced the video card, motherboard, power supply, memory, and tv tuner card since first building it.  The only remaining piece of hardware from the initial BUILD is the sound card and the case.  Sure, the sound card could cause it but I would think that happen as a conflict with the first motherboard or memory and that it would go away when those items were replaced with new ones.

Is there a log or other way to find out what is causing the lock up?  I am not really familiar with Windows logs and didn't know if they would register FAILURES like this.  Any help would be much appreciated.Have you tried disabling the sound card?  Then you can rule it out...Good evening aReLBee and welcome to CH

What is your OS (operating system) XP or Vista or Windows 7 and what Bit version 32 or 64 bit.

In the device manager is there any yellow or red icons?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Mike,

Thank you for your reply.  I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.  There are no yellow or red indicators on the Device Manager.

Veltas,

I will try that.  Thanks.

Same CPU & CPU cooler?
Have you reapplied thermal paste?
Have you monitored CPU temps?Good evening aReLBee and welcome back

A couple of things

#1... Did you have any luck removing / disabling the sound card to see if the issue is gone like "Veltas" asked

#2... "Computer_Commando" had a good point did you re-paste or replaced the CPU heat sink / fan? and how are the temps on it?

#3... When you first set up the PC installed MSE then later on you replaced the MoBo etc did you do a fresh install of MCE?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Have you tried basic testing the hard drive and memory by running a diagnostic TEST before any replacements made?

Solve : 2003 Word program and printing?

Answer»

I'm back!  Seriously, I want to thank all you people that help me.  My current problem seems to be two fold.  FIRST, my Word docuement is different suddenly from what it was before.  There is no adjustment available to change the vertical margin along the left hand side.  The "tab" I usually use seems to be all the way to the top and I can't click and drag it down. (attch A).
SECONDLY, my 2003 Word program prints all documents (even labels) to the right and down where the text runs off the page.  It also prints that way.  This happens on new and stored documents. (attch: gasoline prices memo)  I haven't changed anything on my Windows 7 laptop, that I know of. Thanks for listening and I hope someone can help.   Micromos

[YEAR+ old attachment deleted by admin]Good evening micromos and welcome back to CH

I am sorry I do not see what issues you may be having.

I also use windows 7 and MS office 2003 pro, the lay outs, page adjustments etc where fine for me that you gave us. The second word DOC was blank.

I do not know what this is "The "tab" I usually use seems to be all the way to the top" in word you can change the page editing options, buttons etc. Then in the page layout you can set the margins etc.

If all prints are coming out incorrect you may have bad / corrupt driver for your printer.

If I am missing what you are trying to describe please let me know. Mike

hartbeatmr, Thanks for responding.  My word program was set up so that in the upper left hand corner there was a blue area (in the scale column that could be scrolled up or down to adjust the vertical margin.  There is no adjustment on the current word program now. I tried but can't send you a screen print of it here.  I could through an email if you want.   In addition, the pages I print are shoved to the right side where they print off the page.  This happens on my labels printing also. DonnGood evening micromos and welcome back

I think I know what you are talking about "My word program was set up so that in the upper left hand corner there was a blue area"

When word is open click on view up top and CHOOSE print layout that will give you the rulers back with the blue bar back.

As far as the pages / layout being on the right side look up top for the B I U next to that may be align left and middle and right just click on the left margin button.

Then look up top for file then page set up then look at the margins and layout tabs have the settings that you want.

Hopefully this helps you, Mike

I'll be a son of an idiot! I know I tried that margin adjustment before but it now prints as it should.  Thanks a bunch.  The blue bar still isn't there but I guess I can manually tab down to where I want to start the letter. I clicked on the "line spacing" section also which opened a menu that looks PROMISING but I don't know how to minipulate it to bring back the blue bar or if it will.  Want to check that out for me?  Good evening micromos and welcome back to CH

Yes you can fix and get back the blue bar "When word is open click on view up top and choose print layout that will give you the rulers back with the blue bar back."

So open MS word and look up top for View and click on it then Choose "Print layout" the blue bar will be back

Mike Mike, That didn't work BUT I clicked on "Header and Footer" and that gave me back the blue bar.  However, once I close and leave the document and open one again the blue bar is missing. Aargh!Good evening micromos and welcome back

You may want to see if you have Office SP3 there were some fixes in that SP.

Also you may want to do a detect and repair from the help up top.

If neither of these work I would un-install office and re-install it that would be the best fix if word is not keeping your settings.

Hope this helps, Mike  Attached is a copy of the word document as I like it. (with the blue bar) I just opened Word and clicked on "View", "header and footer" - then "header and footer" a second time and it came up like I want it.  However, when I close the document it doesn't save the style.  Is there a way to save the style once I have it?  Sorry to drag this out.

Donn

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Good evening micromos and welcome back

Let's try changing some of the settings for some reason they seem like they are getting changed.

1..Open a new document and select Format > Font.
2..Select a new font and size in the Font dialog box, and then click Default. Word will ask you if you want these changes to apply to all new documents using the "Normal template" (normal.dot).
3..Click Yes to make the changes permanent. The change will apply to Word's Normal/default style and to all styles based on Normal.
4..To change Word's default page margins, select File > Page Setup. The first tab should be Margins, make your changes to the margins here, and then click Default.
5..Click Yes when Word asks you to confirm the changes. This warning will look exactly like the one shown above.

Note:You can also change other settings affecting page layout (including paper orientation and line numbering) in the same dialog box.

Hope this helps. Doing the above changes should put all future word doc's back to factory settings and from there you can make what minor changes you want.

Mike Mike, I did that and it changed the margin and font but the blue bar remains missing.  Is the factory default without the blue bar.  I don't thik it is because I always had it before. DonnNo you are right the default is to have the blue adjustment bar there.

But when you made the changes did it fix the rest of the issue but the blue bar? and did the settings stay as they should.

If the rest of the settings stayed as they should? just not the blue bar. Mike That's right . Everything is correct now except the blue bar.  I even clicked default again after I clicked header and footer twice but it didn't put the blue bar back. Donn  I just want to thank all for their help.  The program is functioning at a 75% level so I am going to take it to the Geek Squad at Best buy and see if they are as good as described.  REGARDS, Micromos

Solve : Toshiba Restore?

Answer»

I'm trying to restore my Toshiba 215 laptop. There are no markings on it all I know is its a A215. When I try to find a system restore disk online there are so many different ones. Most of them are A215 disks ,but they have dashes then 5 other numbers. I don't know what to get could anyone TELL me how to find the entire number. If not could someone suggest to me what else I could do.  If you do a SEARCH at the Toshiba site there will be the procedure for Factory Restore from the hidden partition...you may not even need the CD's but why would they not send them to you ? ?Hi

This is a procedure i found online for your laptop

Turn the Toshiba Satellite A215 computer off.
Press and hold the "0" key. Turn the computer on.

Release the "0" key when the Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen appears.

click to select "Recovery of Factory Default Software" and then click "NEXT."

Click to select "Recover to out-of-box-state" and then click "Next."

Click "Next" on the confirmation screen to begin the recovery process.

Press any key on the keyboard to restart the computer when prompted. The computer boots up to the Windows setup screen.

I hope this helps

PS most Toshiba's have a make recovery Cd's in the Toshiba group on the start menu
So if you can still start windows It's good to make those disks

Solve : On board/Integrated Video Card?

Answer»

Hi,  I am only able to boot my computer up in VGA mode (pressing F8 while booting, selecting VGA mode).  Also can get to Safe mode but it doesn’t recognize my regular password so I have to use an unpassworded administrator account that I set up a while back.  But that’s a different problem.).  Device Manager has a Video Controller as a yellow question marked Other Device.  In the past I have read about uninstalling a device in DvcMgr and rebooting to allow the computer to find it and install it again.  Should I try this or will I loose my video entirely?

I have gone to the Gateway/eMachines site and downloaded the appropriate video driver program (29MB folder with a setup program and other files).  Should I run this before or after uninstalling the disabled Video Controller?

Should I do something else entirely?

Computer:
EMachine T6524 circa 2005
ATI Radeon® Xpress 200 (PCI-Express® )
Windows XP MCE SP3

Device Manager:
-Yellow Question Mark – Other Devices
   Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
   Device Disabled (Code 22)
   Driver: Provider-unknown; Date-Not available; Version-Not available; Signer-Not digitally signed.
Driver Details: No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.
   Device Instance ID:  PCI\Ven_1002&Dev_5954&Subsys_7141162&Rev_00\4&D623FAE&0&2808

-Digital ADAPTOR
Zone Screen Virtual Display Driver  (My note: this listing is OK in DvcMgr.  I don’t know if this is related or not.)

History:

I had installed an ATI Radeon X300se in 2005 to have 2 monitor capability (and had the BIOS selection to use it instead of the onboard video PORT).  In 2009 I replaced the ATI with a GeForce 8400GS.  (I ran a program from ATI to DELETE its drivers so this probably deleted the onboard ATI drivers as well.  A guess.)  SEPTEMBER 2012 I got a gray screen when booting to Windows.  I reseated the GeForce card and the RAM.  I connected a monitor to the onboard video port and disconnected the monitors on the GeForce card.  I got a black screen and cursor.  I was able to view the POST and entered BIOS setup to enable the onboard video port.  It booted to a gray screen.  I removed the GeForce card entirely and replaced the power source and still booted to a gray screen.  I went into the startup selection (F8) and selected Safe Mode.  It booted successfully to Safe Mode.  I ran AVG and Ccleaner.  Still booted into a gray screen.  I booted into F8 and selected the VGA Mode and successfully booted into Windows.  This is pretty much where I am at the moment.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike
1.  Are you saying that the PCI-e graphics card & the onboard video result in the same "gray screen"?
2.  Have you tried a different monitor?Yes both the GeForce PCI card and the Onboard video card boot up gray.  I have not tried to boot the GeForce in VGA mode.  I'd like to get the computer functioning basically again before messing with the GeForce card.

Yes, I have tried two monitors, both boot up to gray or to VGA mode.

Thanks,
MikeWhat exactly do you mean by a "gray screen"?  To me, it means there are no colors displayed at all, at any time.
I think you mean the pre-Windows screen is normal "gray" & Windows is VGA only.

Getting drivers for the gForce card is easier, since we don't know what the onboard video controller is.
nVidia uses the same download for all:  http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Solve : A little feedback on my PC build?

Hi

Would like some feedback on the build I'm thinking of BUYING for maxed settings gaming

Intel Core i5 3570K 4.3Ghz
Radeon HD 7870
8GB RAM
Asus P8Z77-V LX
600 W PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

It's going to cost me £750($1200, €940 with 3 years warranty. I chose the parts myself but I'm wondering what do the more experienced and knowledgeable people think about it. LOOKING to last about 2 years with it before I upgrade.

Many thanks in advance What Brand PSU ? ?
Did you price out the difference for i5 vs. i7 ? ?
Whose RAM ?

Other than that should serve you well...600W Xigmatek PSU
8GB Corsair 1600mhz Vengeance (2x4GB)  (from what I've heard the difference between this and 2133 is minimal)

I'm just wondering this CPU is overclocked 4.3Ghz, will I be able to overclock it myself when it gets here even more and what would be the maximum that it would go to? Because I've seen people reaching 5Ghz with it, what things does it DEPEND on? Sorry this isn't part of my first question but I'm just wondering.

When I first got the computer I attached my 24" Dell monitor directly to the video card HDMI slot.  The BIOS SCREEN appeared as well as the prompt to install windows 7 from drive.  However there were lines that randomly appeared on the screen in different locations at different instances.  Therefor, I changed the monitor over to directly plugging it into the motherboard HDMI slot and using the integrated graphics card.  This appeared perfectly.  I installed windows 7 and set up the basics using the integrated card and installed drivers for my 7970 thinking that that may have been the issue.  Well, that did nothing to fix it and it still refused to use the HDMI output on the V Card.  90% of the time, the monitor would remain black and occasionally it would show up with lines on the screen.  But it NEVER made it to my desktop only to BIOS.  I then entered BIOS and set it to boot using the 7970 and disabled the integrated card.  This did nothing to solve the problem either.  I have opened up the computer, tried different slots, removed it and re-inserted it several times and nothing seems to work.  I know it is getting power because the fan on the 7970 spins.  Any advice or experience regarding this issue would, again, be appreciated.

Things I have Tried:
  • Updating Drivers
    Different PCI Slots
Disabling Integrated Graphics and Enabling PCI Graphics on BIOS
Good morning Reaper19 and welcome to CH

When you go to start the PC open the side panel and look at the LED on the board it will give you a code and look in your manual it should tell what the possible issue is.

But I would not mess to much if it is new and under warrantee you may void it, Mike   I am getting a b2 error which refers to a Legacy Option Rom Initialization error.  Now, I am not sure exactly what this means.  I have tried going into BIOs and disabling Legacy Rom, but that did not do anything either.  I understand that with the B2 error, it can be just about anything.  But since I can use the computer normally and everything is checking out when I remove my 7970, it makes me want to think it is that.  But, I do not know much about this.  Thoughts?

Good evening Reaper19 and welcome back

Well depending on who made that MoBo it maybe video issue either onboard GVA chip or as you found out the add-on Video card.

I would be calling them up. Who ever you bought it from and do a RMA for another video card. The error you are getting "Legacy Option Rom Initialization error" makes since that you can use the PC with out the video card.

If you look at part of the error you got "Rom" that means "Read only memory" the add-on video card has memory kind of like your MoBo has but the difference for the memory on the MoBo is "Ram" which is "Random access memory" this can read and write temporarily. But in some ways yes they both do the same thing and you would be right yes they do. But the video card memory only lets the info pass through and can not write, if I am making any since I hope

When you contact the vendor for the video card replacement I would ask them if your card can use HDMI as the default cable connection for your display although it should be able too but maybe you can use it but only as the second display and not as primary connection.

Hope this help you, Mike

PS please let us know how you make out.    Most stores are closed today since it is Sunday, but I am going to go out and grab a DVI cable and try that out.  After a quick google search, it seems similar problems were experienced when they tried using only an HDMI connection.  Hopefully, this fixes it.  I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of RMAing it.

Thank you very much for all the help thus far, you have saved me a ton of time and effort.  I'll post again after getting the new DVI cable, hopefully while using my 7970!Sorry for taking so long to RESPOND.  After running some more tests and eventually trying to use the Card in another system, I found out it is definitely the card.  I called the company and they are sending me a new one.

Thanks again for all the help.

Solve : Macrium Image Restore on WinXP New Internal Hard Drive?

Answer»

Thought I should start a new thread for the benefit of others facing the same issue. I have back-up images of C and D on an external hard drive and want to transfer them to a new hard drive. I think I have already made one mistake because the Macrium Rescue CD is Linux - I think I made the wrong one as my OS is WinXP. I tried booting my computer with the old internal hard drive and Macrium Rescue CD to see what will happen. That is when I realized I have Linux. Then I went to the first step which asked me to select the location of the image I wanted to load and it did NOT show my external hard drive.

Do I need to make another Macrium Rescue CD? Why isn't my external hard drive showing? The Linux CD is the right one.  Don't know why the external drive is not showing up.I assume the external drive is CONNECTED via usb? See if there is a bios setting to enable USB at boot (or similar wording).Yes, connected by USB. I can't boot my computer to check the bios. Right now I am reinstalling the OS from the recovery discs that came with the computer. Don't know if this will be successful because I do not know specifically what is wrong with my internal HD. Thanks for your help!If SMART is reporting a problem with the hard drive, this may be the reason the boot CD doesn't see the USB drive.  A bad hard drive can hang the POST.

Computer does not boot to get to BIOS, so don't know what you mean.  If it won't POST (get to BIOS), it won't do much of anything.Sorry, I often use the wrong computer terms. I do get a screen with some choices at the bottom such as esc for menu, F10 for recovery and it gives me a button for set-up which may allow me to get to bios.  I had to click on esc to get a menu that allowed me to boot the CD ROM drive first. Ok, I completed formatting old hard drive and can now post and boot-up. Please tell me how to change bios setting so external hard drive shows when I boot with Macrium Rescue CD. Thanks.

Wow, am I in a time warp? Looking at my system as it existed in 2006 is overwhelming. I have given-up trying to update software. At the end of the format/ recovery, the diagnostics SAID 15 pr or file segments were unreadable. Can't wait for my new hard drive. Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 20, 2012, 04:26:42 PM

The Linux CD is the right one.  Don't know why the external drive is not showing up.

Macrium will not give me much help until I buy the paid program but they did tell me to use the Win PE Rescue CD as it would be much more compatible than Linux. There is no support for the Free version of Macrium...i frankly don't see a need to purchase it.
If you boot from the CD the procedure is simple...it asks for the image file + point it to the External HDD...
Then it asks for a destination - point it to the new HDD and let it do it's thing.
When it is finished power down and disconnnect the external for now...set the internal HDD as 1st boot device and re-boot. Quote from: patio on October 21, 2012, 09:26:47 AM

Thanks Patio. The problem is my USB connected external hard drive is not showing as a location for the image when I use the Linux Rescue CD so I can't click on it. Maybe this has something to do with my faulty HD. I'll come back after I get my HD installed. The external should still show...
Is it powered Up ?
Is it connected to a front USB port ? ? ...if so move it to a rear port...Yes, power on light shining bright. It is connected to a back 2.0 but I will move it to front.YIPPEE!  I went into the Phoenix-AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility and changed from plug & play to BIOS configures external devices. That allowed my external drive to appear in the Rescue CD. In the HDD Group Boot Priority screen, my internal drive is #1 and external drive is #2. Does it make any difference which drive has boot priority?

I always keep 3 back-up images and label them New, Newer and Newest. For some reason, only New and Newer are there and Newer goes back to Feb 2012. Newest is just a few weeks old and I sure wish I could restore it.  Go figure.

Getting closer........Where is the image labelled Newest ? ?
If you saved it to the external it should be there.
The Internal HDD should have 1st boot priority...actually i keep mine as CD/DVD 1st then internal HDD 2nd. Quote from: patio on October 21, 2012, 11:45:16 AM

I dunno Patio. In fact, now that I think about it, I had 5 or 6 text documents also backed-up on the ex HD and they didn't show either. Doesn't make any sense that some files/folders show and some don't.
Any suggestions?

Solve : Vertical Lines Monitor?

Answer»

Hi,
I recently bought i5 3570k and radeon 7850, so the problem i am facing is that
mostly during GAMING(in dark backgrounds) i see some broad vertical lines.

my monitor is GL benq 2030 and it has a vga connection and i use the dvi to vga connector i got with the graphic card(radeon 7850).

To my surprise i didn't notice any such vertical lines when i connected the very same pc to my old CRT monitor, only with this new monitor i am facing vertical lines flowing upside down.

I have enabled tripple buffering and VSYNC in games that have that option, also lucid logic virtu mvp i got with asus board is also installed.

Please help me in knowing exactly what is causing this display issue and what can i do to have it resolved, either its graphic card problem or monitor problem,Please help me out.

thanks
Verify that GL benq 2030 REFRESH rate is 60Hz, under Control Panel--Display--SETTINGS--Advanced--Monitor
LCD/LED monitors are locked at 60Hz, CRT's could be set at various rates.  Plug & Play monitors should set this automatically.

Could also be a bad connection.  Does your graphics card have VGA or only DVI?

Your monitor has a DVI input, so why do you need the adapter?

In my graphic card i have  single link dvi n double link dvi and hdmi port, since monitor i mention has
only vga connection so for it to get plugged in pc i have to use dvi to vga adapter that came free
with the graphic card.2 things you can try...
Power down and remove all power to the PC...remove and re-seat the vid card...sounds like it's not a software issue.
2nd...buy a new adapter...many are dodgy cheap knockoffs. Quote from: HardwareTwitch on October 25, 2012, 02:06:12 PM

Solve : PC Hangs With Jarring Noise?

Answer»

Hi,

I have been facing this problem from past 2 months and more, problem is my PC hangs with Jarring Sound only while gaming.

My psu went faulty last week so i replaced it and thought it wud resolve the issue but this issue is still there, after replacing with new psu this hanging reduced a bit but is still a major issue.

So please help me out with this cuz i am not able to play any games i used to play easily with this pc earlier.

my pc is old and it play only those games which it used to ran with no error before so the reason can't be that i am using specs below game requirements, may be ram faulty(no cuz i have used it to full capacity many times without gaming and freezing issue didn't happened then), could be some software conflicts or virus doing fresh install would rectify it etc, etc, pls help me tracing out the source of issue in order to resolve it as it is REALLY frustrating.

pc specs:
p4 631 cedar mill
nividia 7300se/7200gs
1.5gb ram

please guide me.ThanksPlease do not post the same question more than once. I deleted the duplicate post.I'll give you 3 things to test that may isolate the problem.
As it is an older PC that was running your games fine the most likely suspects would be RAM, HDD, and power...not in that order.
For the RAM DLoad and burn a bootable CD of MemTest (info on the site ) ...let it run a minimum of 1 hour...any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM.
DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the hard drive manuf. site...run the long test which takes awhile depending on drive size so do it at bedtime...again the info on making a bootable CD will be at the site...
If no joy-joy with the above then borrow a power supply unit of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to test...
One...or all of these 3 methods should determine what the issue is...
P.S. All the above are Free...
Let us know...

P.S....I suspect it's the hard drive so do that 1st...if it is use it as little as possible if you want any chance of data retrieval."for the duplicate post- sorry for that , i didn't knew what section this topic wud fit exactly -so i carried out duplicate posting"

Additional-i did cpu  and gpu stress testing but pc did not hang as it does in games.

for ram test(i doubt it)- cuz i have ran many programs simultaneously that used almost all of available physical ram and sometimes go beyond it(but nothing happened), so i guess it can't
be ram.

for power supplies - i have not used good brands with this pc, i usually get cheap 450W power supply.
since my games ran earlier with no trouble on these cheap psu's i believe it possibly may not be the factor.
in case if theres possibility power supply not enough
i run only basic computer peripherals
hdd, gpu and motherboard so i doubt power supply wud be less.

i am thinking of reformatting my pc and doing clean install cuz i doubt some malicious software
or driver incompatibilities may have arisen.

please point and assist me if i am heading wrong.
I'll paraphrase...

The one detail you didn't address was the health of the HDD...

As said above ALL of those tests cost you zero...up to you if you want to do them or not.
A clean install may solve the issue...then i would be the one looking silly.
Again...up to you.Seems a bit silly to ask for advice if you're going to do the same thing anyway

No. I'm telling you you've already gotten plenty of good advice, and your responses seem to try their best not to follow them, but dismiss them. "It can't be the cheap PSU because I use them all the time" Is a downright silly response. Additionally, I'd argue that attempting to get you to stop wasting the time of both yourself and volunteers here helps everybody. Either come up with some reason besides you not Feeling suggested causes are the problem. Of course you don't think what is suggested is the problem. if you did, you wouldn't be asking for advice, would you? That said, let's go through the Original Post.

Quote

You never tell us what a "Jarring Sound" is. By definition all we know is that the sound is unpleasant. That tells us absolutely nothing. To some people, the computer playing country music could meet this definition. Personally, I think this is probably the last second or so of sound being repeated over and over, but that's just a guess. Already we've had to resort to guesswork.

Quote

A Faulty PSU can often TAKE the Motherboard or other components with it. This has already been suggested and weakly dismissed. eg.

Quote
may be ram faulty(no cuz i have used it to full capacity many times without gaming and freezing issue didn't happened then)

And then only after some insistence do you actually do a RAM or HDD test. In fact we don't even know for sure that you did. For all we know you have resorted to just saying that you tested it to get helpers to stop insisting that you do so, as if we have some magical elixir to find out what the problem is and we are just testing you with these questions and suggestions. That isn't what the questions and suggestions are for, they are for determining the cause, and the more cooperative you are in either following those suggestions or providing reasons better than "I don't think that's it" to said suggestions, the faster the cause of your issue can be found. To be charitable let's assume you did do the tests for HDD and RAM.

Now we just have to deal with the fact that this system had a faulty cheap PSU which you have now replaced with a new one. Somehow this comes up:
Quote
PSU- i recently changed one, since i used the same kind of cheap psu's built b4 and i didn't had problem b4, so i kinda doubt it.
But... didn't you just say that you had a Faulty PSU? Doesn't that count as having a problem before? Either way, I'd say either the old PSU fried something or caused some issue on the Motherboard, or the new one is not up to spec. Unfortunately there really isn't a way to test this. I'd do a chkdsk /r on the hard drive, though. You never mention how to did an HDD Test (Again, assuming you actually did). Some tools only confirm good S.M.A.R.T Status, but your issue can easily be caused by a  few bad sectors.

The only reason i tried to skipped the options mentioned cuz as i said i am facing it from 2 months,
i have been on various forums.. i did get somehow same advice diagnostic procedure but it didn't resolve the issue. Had i have been impatient i wud have reformatted and checked it way b4 but somehow i m clinging to it and really wanted to know why such problem is application specific only.

I had no intentions of ruining time and take advice which i do not intend to follow, its just i tried that b4 so just skip and lets dig into what other options i can explore regarding the rectification.

On my PART,I ll try my best  to be more elaborate what i faced and what i did in response to it.

One cud assume that PSU maybe the reason but AFTER buying new ONE with similar SPECS

ISSUE-not resolved/remains
one cud assume that maybe PSU is not the right section we are looking for the reason behind the situation.

chkdsk does more than just scan for bad sectors. WD's tool is not going to find file system errors, for example, which can also cause the issue you are seeing. Same with a faulty Graphics card or a Graphics card that is overheating.

Another thing to try would be to cause the problem to occur, reboot, and see if there is anything in the event log about it.

Solve : DVD drive help!?

Answer»

Hi.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT32N ATA dvd drive on an Acer laptop using Windows 7 x64.  The drive wont read any disks at all.  Not getting any error codes, and I have deleted the upper and lower filters from the registry (as per a few tutorials I have found on the subject).  Checked in device manager and it is said to be working properly, though it clearly isnt.  I tried updating the driver, but apparently I have the latest one according to windows.

At a bit of a loose end and would appreciate any help/advice that anyone may have.  Cheers, guys.  :-)

Feenix   1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...

2. Delete Upper & Lower Filters
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
Restart computer.
or...

3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...

4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
The first step in diagnosing this is determining whether it's a hardware or software issue. I would suggest (from a different computer), downloading and burning the Ubuntu Live CD from ubuntu.com. If you are unable to boot from that CD on the computer with the CD drive issues, then either the drive has failed or it somehow got disabled in the BIOS settings.Hey, guys.

OK.  Alan, I tried all the steps youve listed to no avail.  Ninjatex, I actually use a ubuntu partition for working with Ruby on Rails and had to install the live disc through an external drive.  Im INTERESTED in what you said about the drive being disabled somehow in BIOS.  How can I tell if that has happened and how can I fix it?  If you are referring to the boot order, I have moved it up and down and nothing seems to change - the hard drive is top of the list, the dvd drive is second on the list - I repeat, it wont recognise a single disc so I have to use an external drive for everything.

FeenixTo test the drive, insert a BOOTABLE disc and see if the system recognizes it at boot (make SURE the optical drive is at the top of the device boot order in bios) Quote from: Feenix on October 18, 2012, 08:09:05 AM

I actually use a ubuntu partition for working with Ruby on Rails and had to install the live disc through an external drive.

Sounds like either your drive has GONE bad (happens all the time) or the port the drive connects to has gone bad (happens rarely). Have you tried re-seating the drive (remove it, PLUG it BACK in)? If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to buy a new drive. You can get some decent drives on ebay used, that's where I would look.Tried re-seating the drive, and cleaning the lens again - almost played an audio cd but not quite.  Might try deleting the driver entirely and downloading it in case its become corrupted or something, but otherwise it sounds like ebay is the place to be.

Cheers, guys.

Feenix1) Optical drives do not use 3rd party drivers.
2) Sounds like the drive needs to be replaced.

Solve : VGA to Wireless?

Answer»

Hi,

Is it possible that I can MAKE my 15 pin VGA monitor to a WIRELESS monitor connecting some device.

Thnx
I have seen KVM extenders that work over Cat5 Network connection from Extender to Extender, but it might be using the Cat5 PAIRS for communications that are not regular data packets over a network. If it is, you could place a bridge and access point between them and make Keyboard, Video, and MOUSE all over WIFI.

Other option is to CONVERT VGA to composite and use security hardware (radio extender of composite video) NOT QUALITY VIDEO! Low Def!

Solve : ATI radeon 7850 connectivity?

Answer»

Hi,
I need help regarding ATI RADEON 7850 connectivity.

I bought this card recently and it provides with 1 single LINK DVI, 1 double link dvi
, 1 display and 1 hdmi port.

What i want is to connect my pc which has above card installed to have output
on my television, since my television is LITTLE old and it has rca connection ports.

so would the following cable is sufficient for output to tv.

since rca is analog and hdmi is digital , so does my graphic card wud CHANGE signal from digital to analog for display on tv by using above cable

OR i  need some specific hdmi to rca convertor.
Please guide me as soon as possible. If your TV is that old, it probably won't look very good, no matter what you do.  Sounds like your TV is analog CRT.

Solve : overclocked failure?

Answer»

my COMPUTER started to buzzed and turned off by itself and when i restarted it again the monitor displays no signal so i removed the power cord and i switched it on again it the bios displays overclocked failure so i load up  the default configuration and it boots up but in the middle it froze again and the sreen buzzed with lines ..... so is it a hardware PROBLEM are there any other solution ?  What hardware do you have? Cpu Motherboard RAM? And what did you overclock to? Frequency? voltage? You need to be more specific. If its freezing up with default bios settings after a bad overclock chances are you fried it.7 times out of 10 a buzzing noise is USUALLY the PSU...
Borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to test...
You may also want to replace the CMOS battery...part # CR 2032 located on the MBoard as it sounds like it's not retaining the BIOS info...about 4 Bucks...available anywhere.
Do it with all power dis-connected.
It could be a symptom of the FLAKEY PSU though...

Solve : display posturizing?

Answer»
DISPLAY is changing from 32 bit to 256 resulting in display posturzing.        My bad!  VIDEO card Nvida 9100Welcome to CH!

Unfortunately, we're going to need a lot more information than that, such as full computer specs, OS version, how long it's been doing this, when does this change occur, recent CHANGES you might have made to software or drivers or hardware, DRIVER versions, etc.

As it is, the only thing I could say is REINSTALL the drivers for your graphics card.

Solve : HP 2110?

Answer»

Recently I 'inherited' this all-in-one printer.   Checking for drivers I find there are in fact 3 different units.  My question regards which one is it?  2110, 2110v, and 2110xi.  There's nothing written anywhere on it.
Checking in with HP was typically useless as they don't support that unit any more.
Can ANYONE point me in the right direction as to how can I find which one?  https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bpu05200&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=79488#N132

Unless I'm MISTAKEN, it's the same driver (I have one that I've used as a backup for many years - very solid little AOI). Worst CASE, just install the 2110 driver.Wondered about that....They do however list 3 different drivers  2110, 2110v, and 2110xi.Did you try looking at the label likely LOCATED on the bottom of the printer? It usually lists the full model number.

Solve : Dead power supply??

Answer»

Well, woke up this morning to find my computer (which was on the night before) off. Had some wind and rain last night and figured the power must have gone out in the night. (My computer specs are to the left in my profile. Build is about 2 years old, all parts new at that time.)

Now, the computer won't turn on. Pressed the power button, no lights or fans or anything, like it's not even plugged in. I checked the power outlet and it's fine, checked all the power cables and they all seem in order.

Normally, some USB devices (like my unpowered USB hub and mouse) stay lit even with the computer off, but they're all off now. Even the little green light on the motherboard isn't on.

I figure something has happened to the power supply, but before I go and shell out for $75-$100 for a new power supply (the system needs at least 600w and a power supply that supports 2 graphics cards, and I don't buy cheap stuff), just wanted to get a second opinion. Would there POSSIBLY be anything else such as the motherboard? Even with the motherboard damaged, I figure something would still have some kind of power, like the USB devices as I described, but nothing, which leads me to believe it's more likely the power supply is shot.

What do you guys think?Unfortunately the PSU takes the 1st hit in these circumstances...is there any way of borrowing 1 of the one or greater wattage to test ? ?
Meantime unplug the existing unit and toggle the rear on/off switch 5=6 times and re-plug it.Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a system like mine or one I could borrow. I suppose I could use a lower wattage one just to hook it up and see if the stuff lights up like it should, even if I don't turn it on. At least that would give me some kind of answer as to if it's the power supply. I might have one here at the shop somewhere that will do.

The only other thing that I could think of is that the motherboard took a hit that has stopped it from LETTING power through to the USB stuff when it's off or recognizing that the power button is being pressed, but I thought that would be unlikely. I haven't noticed any damage to the motherboard on a visual inspection either, but I know that doesn't mean that there couldn't be something wrong with it.

I had already tried everything I could to get the PSU working again, including what you suggested. Still no response from it. I think I'll go ahead and try a lower wattage one, just to see if things light up as I said. We'll see how it goes.Just wanted to mention that a UPS is a good investment. I have 4 of them. Flatscreen TV & cable modem is hooked up to 1, and have 3 others on 3 other computers. If a UPS is too expensive, a surge supressor is a must to protect power supplies from getting spiked.

Personally I like UPS's better as for your computer will stay running for 5 or 10 minutes depending on draw and UPS VA RATING. For quick power outages they keep your computer running as if nothing ever happened, as well as if yo have an extended outage and plug in the USB remote cable that comes with most APC brand UPS's with the power management software installed, you can have the UPS safely shut down your computer when the UPS is drained to 20% battery life to avoid DATA corruption. This is handy if computer is running and your not home or awake to shut it down safely.

Only annoyance of UPS's though is that they beep repeatedly during an outage to inform you that they are running, so they can be annoying if trying to sleep and you get an outage at 3am. Some have a option on them to silence, most dont.Well I'll be....

I tried everything I could think of to get that thing working this morning. Unplugged it for an hour, disconnected it from EVERYTHING, played with the switch... nothing worked. Left it unplugged before going to work.

Came home now, and for grins plugged it in and the USB hub light came on. Pressed the power button and it started right up. Guess it just needed to sit there a while longer. Seems to be working fine for now.

That is of course after I stopped by a friend's shop on the way home and borrowed a Raidmax RX-730SS. Oh well, guess I can take it back to him tomorrow and tell him I don't need it.

Thanks for the help anyway guys.Come to think of it I've had that happen as well...not sure what type of nreakers they use internally for protection...but some take longer than others to re-set with no power to the unit...

Glad to hear you are fixed up and not having to replace a Mboard/CPU combo.... A crowbar circuit once triggered, pulls the voltage below the trigger level, usually close to ground. A clamp prevents the voltage from EXCEEDING a preset level. Thus, a crowbar will not automatically return to normal operation when the overvoltage condition is removed; power must be removed entirely to stop its conduction.CC,For further edification re  your explanation re "crowbar" given that power supplies normally do retain voltages for significant times even after being deprived of a power source would this explain why in quaxo's case it took a passage of time before the effect of power on the crowbar would have endured? We also don;t know if quaxo ever removed power from the computer.truenorthYes, I think that would explain it.
Crowbar could be a feature of his PSU which might only be found on more expensive ones.  None of mine have this feature or it's never been displayed to me before.
More info:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supplyCC,Thank you, truenorth Quote from: truenorth on October 31, 2012, 05:35:06 PM

We also don;t know if quaxo ever removed power from the computer.

Then you didn't read enough  I did say.

It remained unplugged for an hour and still didn't work. Then I left it unplugged while I was at work, so about 10 more hours it was left unplugged before it started working. So, the magic number was somewhere between 1 and 10 hours.

quaxo, and so you did--my error.seems like CC has shone a light on what has taken place. Most interesting.truenorth

Solve : All-In-One fax hookup?

Answer»

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I'll ask anyways.  I have BROADBAND internet and that obviously is run through a phone line as well as a cable connection.  I cancelled my land line a long time ago.  I am GOING through the setup process of my new printer and on the part to set the fax up after HOOKING up the phone cord it asks for a header and a phone number.  My question is that SINCE I cancelled my land line is there any way to HOOK up the printer to receive faxes via the modem?  Obviously I can't just make up a number so my assumption is that there isn't.  Not directly to your all-in-one, but there is Internet Faxing which does not require a fax machine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_fax
It's pretty much like scanning the document & attaching it to an email.

Your all-in-one requires a dial tone to function as a fax machine.

Solve : Video management?? Windows, or Vendor??

Answer»

I'm RUNNING Windows 7.. Question is, is it BETTER, to just let WINDOWS RUN my VIDEO... or to install all the Nvidia software/control panels etc etc... and let IT run the video???  I'm NOT a "GAMER".  In general, you want to offload as MUCH video processing as possible onto your video card by installing what the vendor offers. If they offer a "driver-only" package, that's what you'll want. If not, you can install their bloatware and disable as necessary.

Solve : HEAT PROBLEM with 8-core bulldozer?

Answer»

hi,

i constructed an 8-core bulldozer system, with the AMD bulldozer FX 8120 3.1ghz processor (with 16gb of ram, asus sabertooth m/b, amd 6850 graphics card, 4T SATA hdd space total).

working well- in fact awesome! (scores 7.7 on the windows experience index with windows 7 ultimate), except it goes upto 60 degrees if im running 3 or 4 multiple apps , say windows media player , YM, browsng and doing a virus sweep all at once, so i might have to turn off windows media player for a while while it controls the temperature.

its using the stock fan which came with the processor, a good case with 2 chasis fans) and was set correctly with a thin layer of ARCTIC silver paste.

Wondered if u have any knowledge of 8-core processor (125w) systems and the best way to cool them - to get a fancy water cooled fan perhaps? Just that i read the displayed temperature on the sensor is upto 10 degrees higher than what the actual temp of the cpu is because the sensor is under the m/b instead of in the chip?   its never shut itself down or crashed once due to overheating - perhaps its PARANOIA?

would greatly appreciate any reasonable/experienced feedback!

thanks jools  ps: it has got the latest BIOS and drivers/updates available installed already by the way

--- thanks jools  Found conflicting info on this but after looking at people who were OC'ing this seems to be the norm::
Quote

FX-8xxx is safe max of 60° IIRC
FX-6xxx/4xxx are 71°.

The AMD site was so convoluted for accurate info i gave up after 10 minutes...you may have better luck...
On that note...thermal paste applirf properly ? ?
Stock fan speeds where they should be ? ?
I've gotten stock CPU fans out of the box that were'nt up to snuff...
Also where are your temps being reported from ?thanks,

i'm SURE the thermal compoud and fans are right, will DOUBLE check that,

the temperatures are measured with the AII suite sensor software, which came with the Asus sabertoth 990FX motherboard, which runs in win 7 ultimate 64-bit ,
so i presume thats quite accurate, the rest of the m/b, is all very cool, though Vcore1 is usually 4-5 degrees below the cpu value.

it runs at about 51 degrees normally, until i use multiple apps or a HD game , then will go upto 60 degrees sometimes, the fans the go crazy then, and it hangs at that temperature, until i close an applicaion, then cools quite quickly, but it will hit 60 degrees quite easily , especially with an intense virus scan and windows media player running,

thaks for any advice jools   DLoad and install the following ...just to get some comparitive readings...test both at idle and under load::
SIW system info for windows
Speedfan...
Let us know.thanks for that , i used those apps, speedfan and siw , quit nice, they read exactly the same temperature as the Asus m/b sensor, but useful info,

i changed the fan speed again, loaded even higher, so that 55 degrees is 100% cpu temp, and the system runs very cool now, about  47 degrees under low load, but it still hovers at upto about 61 degrees under high load (61 degrees is claimed as the highest operating temp of this cpu, say with 4-5 good apps running, inc windows media player or a HD game).

i read some say the only thing for it is upgrading the stock fan/cooler   with this cpu, to get the full power capability...........more money eh!  argh

thanks for any input jools  Anytime...
You may want to add a case fan 1st if you have that option and see if things improve...
It may do the trick and would be less costly than a CPU cooler.
My Quad core intel rig idles at 29c and rarely goes above38 to 40c except very heavy tasking...one of the reasons i went with intel.it has got 2 chasis fans on the antec case .. at idle: chasis fan 2 - 1760rpm   :chasis fan 3 - 1200rpm  : cpu fan  - 2900 rpm... chasis fan 3 is always about 500 rpm lower than chasis fan 2 , so maybe ill upgrade those chasis fans.

im not sure if its a problem or not, the Asus suite warns you if it gets to 65 degrees and has an auto-shutdown right? - thats on the asus sabertooth 990fx    m/b (has latest bios).

you got yours to 29 degrees - is that with an upgraded fan ?

thanks for the tips

jools  Shutdown on that CPU should kick in at 63...not 65.
That being said you are still running too close to that for the system to stay healthy or last very long...
My TE,ps weren't a comparison...as they are 2 different CPU's...it was just a point of reference to show how hot you are running.hi, had one of the chasis fans in the wrong socket - the biggest fan should be in slot 1...

and i was surprised i forgot to set the top heat limit of the cpu to 61 degrees in BIOS , it was set to 70 degrees....

so its fine after those tweaks

- theres also an EPU setting in the bios which is quite good if enabled, which regulates the power usage of the cpu - no bad detrimental effect when enabled anyway.

thanks for any help given  Good to hear you're fixed up...

Solve : Monitor not being detected by computer after installation of new components?

Answer»

Hi there, I'm fairly new to this community, so go easy on me.

My problem right now is, that after replacing nearly the entire computer, my monitor, when started along with the computer, displays a "No signal detected!" message. I'm using a stationary computer, and I'll go ahead and LIST the specs.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1225 Quad Core 3.1GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
GPU: ASUS GTX660 Ti 2GB
RAM: Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600MHz 8GB (2x4)
PSU: OCZ ModXStream-Pro 700W
HDDs: Samsung SSD 830 Series 128GB & Western Digital Caviar Green HDD 2TB

This problem APPEARED the first time I tried to boot it after I'd uninstalled all the previous parts, excluding the PSU. My former PSU was a SilverPower something at 500W, and I suspected this might either have been too weak or the manufacturers lied about the wattage. So today I bought a new PSU, the one listed above, the only difference between the two being that this PSU is modular and more powerful, whereas the older one was non-modular. The problem persisted, so I turn to you GUYS. It's not all too urgent, but sitting here unsuccessfully browsing the web for a solution is becoming rather boring. My daily activities used to be gaming, now it's getting angry at the fact that nothing bloody works.

Anyways, yes, I've checked all the cords and made sure they're in the right places, I've tried the HDMI output on both the GPU and the motherboard, I've tried it without the dedicated GPU, I've tried PUTTING the *censored* motherboard in a box along with only the most essential parts and booting it from there using a screwdriver, but nothing works. (The motherboard box, which is non-conductive.) I'm positive I didn't give it a static jolt while rebuilding it, either.

So any help, guys? I'll love you forever if we can solve this. You have a dead new build. Have you checked everything for correct assembly, RAM seated OK, all components compatible, especially because the ASUS P8Z77-V Pro CPU compatibility list has only one (1) Xeon, the E3-1230 v2. (and for that you need BIOS version 1504 or later) Have you a good reason for using a non-ASUS-listed CPU?

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77V_PRO/#CPUS

Now that's strange, I could've sworn I saw my Xeon on the list of compatible processors.

Well then there's the problem, I take it. And yes, the RAM is installed correctly, I've built computers from SCRATCH before, I'm just not very familiar with the Xeon processors, and since I was sort of rushing getting a new CPU, I obviously made a mistake. I'll look into getting another CPU and post here if that fixes it.

Edit: TyposThey might have listed it previously but then deleted it, I suppose. A quick look at some forums I found via Google suggest that Xeons (not a desktop CPU type) can be problematical.

This is the complete compatibility list

the 3 columns are

CPU model, supported since board version, supported since BIOS version

Sir,
I like to CREATE a connection from my COMPUTER system to a wireless DEVICE , which can be CONNECTED to 3 different VGA monitors in three different rooms.
Please let me know if any device is available for such connection. The connection to the device connected to the monitors must be wireless.
thnx,

Solve : Checking Computer Main Board?

Answer»

I have got a free desktop computer with all the components ( main BOARD, power supply, memory cards, DVD Drive, Monitor etc.), except the hard disk. Before purchasing the hard disk, I want to check whether the Main Board is OK (to avoid wasting money). Is it OK to switch on the computer WITHOUT a hard disk? What indications should I see if the Main Board is servicable?

Thank youIf there is no underlying hardware problem, you can power it most likely up to a BIOS section.I understand that it is OK to switch on a computer without connecting the HDD. If some thing is wrong with the hardware, what could I expect to see on the monitor screen? My knowledge here is very LIMITED. Hence, this question again.

Thank youThere will be no issue with powering up with no HDD in the PC...
To see what exactly works and doesn't on it why not DLoad the live version of UBUNTU and create the bootable CD ? ?
This will get you into a live OS enviornment where you can check video, sound and even the network components as a browser is included...
You'll know far more from this than from just powering up with no HDD....First time I herd of UBUNTU. This should help me.Thank you for this information.

Best regards Anytime...also DLoad IMGBurn to create the bootable CD...makes it an easy task...
And like Ubuntu it is also Free.

P.S. Make sure when you grab Ubuntu it is the "Live " version...that's the one that runs from a CD...the other one is the installer package.Very much OBLIGED for all this. I will follow your instructions. It seems a bit over my head but I'll have a go and let you know whether I make a mess of it or not! It is just that I have no experience in this sort of thing. Please accept my appreciation for all the help.

Best regards.

Solve : Wifi and Bluetooth turns off by itself?

Answer»

About 3 months ago I noticed that my wifi and bluetooth started to turn itself on by itself. It does it quite at random times. So I immediately assumed some virus or trojan or such. So i ran AVG and Spybot. Nothing. I've since had the problem off and on. I just had it do it a minute ago. Without me touching it it turned off then back on twice, then back off again.

is this a HARDWARE problem?

unrelated but my microsoft bluetooth notebook mouse 5000 cuts out for chunks of TIME RANDOMLY too.

thanks for any reply!

** I have a hp hdx16t-1200 just over a year old.Check your power settings.I have it on maximum performance.

the wifi setting under battery settings is

Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode > both 'plugged in' and 'battery' are on maximum performance.

 any ideas about this problem?
my ASUS N61Jq also has this ANNOYING problem. Quote from: afshinb on November 05, 2012, 10:33:12 PM

any ideas about this problem?
my ASUS N61Jq also has this annoying problem.

Afshinb, this turned out to be a computer assembly problem. The wire connecting the touch buttons above the keyboard on the laptop was not properly insulated by HP. Based on photos of your laptop I don't think you have the same problem as I have listed here.I have a Toshiba Qosmio Core2Duo running Windows XP SP3 that warns about using Bluetooth and wifi concurrent as they are known to conflict in my laptop model. Solution is use wifi with no bluetooth devices around to drop the wifi. So if your wifi and bluetooth is dropping out, you could have devices CONFLICTING for communications with both, like my laptop warns me about.

Is this a new problem created by introducing any new hardware or devices that use wifi or bluetooth in the home etc?

Solve : Printing small?

Answer»

I have an EPSON SX600FW printer and it has started printing very small. If I CLICK on the Printer Preferences page of the printer and then Page Layout there is a box ticked that says Reduce/Enlarge Document and then a percentage selection of 60%.
If I untick this box, it prints fine, but the next time I try to use it, the box is ticked again and it prints small. I've tried clicking the Reset Default box but this also only works once. It's making it impossible to print remotely from my laptop. I'm using Windows 7 and it doesn't do this for any of the other users except mine.
Has anyone got any ideas?
ThanksBased on the INFORMATION provided i am going to assume that only you are using win 7 and the others are using other operating systems.Have your printer drivers been updated to those applicable to windows 7? Is this a new phenomenon that did not exist at an earlier time where all the factors now present have always been present or was something recently changed? Is the printer set up on a SHARED network and which user's printer is designated the master (home) printer and are the changes of preferences being executed from that computer? truenorthHi
The other users on the PC are also using Windows7 and have no problems. The printer isn't on a network, but it's connected by WiFi to my laptop.
The only change I've possibly made to the system is that I've bought an iPad2 and have accessed the printer (which Isn't AirPrint enabled) via an App from PrintBureau, together with a small helper application on my PC called WePrint. I'm fairly sure that the printer worked OK before that, but not quite 100% sure.
As I say, I can reset the Print to normal, but it reverts to small printing the next time I use it.

Solve : PC has trouble starting?

Answer»

Hello!  My wife's PC is old (3-5 years).  When she turns it on the fans start to spin and then there is this moaning noise and the whole THING SHUTS down.  I've opened it and given it a quick cleaning, but to no avail.

My analysis is that the power supply is shot.  But before I spend $ on that, I just wanted to check in with you guys in case there could be another source of the problem.

Thanks, as always.3-5 years isn't old - I have several that AGE or older that work just fine. And YES, it sounds like the PSIT does sound like the power supply has gone. Have you attempted to locate where in the case the sound is coming from?

And Allan is right, 3-5 years isn't that old. My laptop is 3 and it still works great. My wife's desktop is 4 and it still plays most games at full settings.

Old is the company whose computers I went to fix the other week. Most of the computers in their building were the exact same model and looked pretty dated. I was there to replace the power supply in one. On the power supply I took out, the warranty stick on it EXPIRED 12 YEARS AGO... and they have a building FULL of these machines still in active use.

My new favorite client. I expect to be seeing them frequently in the near future.

Solve : Terrible download speed on new pcie edimax wlan adapter?

Answer»

So, I relatively recently bought a new gaming computer, sans wlan adapter..

so i bought a cheap netgear usb dongle.

worked WONDERS for a couple months, then began sucking up massive bandwidth, lagging the entire network.

ordered a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315109 from newegg, of course..

got it in the MAIL, installed it, installed drivers from disk...

the download speed on speedtest and speakeasy is very slow. like, 1 Mbps slow. I should be getting at least 15, at best, somewhere between 15 and 25.

other computers on the network are getting about 15... but not mine. download speeds are normal at about 5-7... ping is extraordinarily low. Sites load up quickly, but downloads move at the speed of a slug.

how do i go about diagnosis here?

::edit1::
and a couple things i forgot... I have a sneaky thought that it is probably the hardware... which is why it is in the hardware catagory. Also, full bars of signal.

::edit2::
also, im getting zero network utilization on task manager when im not doing anything.Have you tried updating the drivers to the latest ones from the manufacturer's website?
Do you get the same issue if you try connecting using a normal Ethernet cable?
Have you tried the card in a DIFFERENT slot, if available?I updated to the latest drivers from the manufacturers website, with no change. I do not have the same trouble when i connect with an ethernet cable, and that is the only pcie slot i have.

also, funny thing, i can play games fine with no lag and normal ping, can download much slower than normal, but not at what i would imagine 1.5 mbps to be... but on speakeasy and speedtest.net, it says im crawling on at 1.5mbps.

also, for REFERENCE, on the usb adapter, i was hitting my normal (meaning what every other computer in the house was getting) 15 mbps or so... so by process of elimination, i would bet on the adapter, but it is brand new, and seems to actually work just fine. The only other thing to do is try the adapter in a different PC, and see what happens.  It does sound like a faulty adapter to me.is there any way to test the adapter to see if there is something wrong with it? when i go into device manager, it says it is working correctly, and beyond that, i dont really know how to test it. These being the operative words i would replace it...
If it's a desktop i personally prefer the PCI cards...a bit more durable.while i appreciate the attention, patio, i mentioned that i replaced the usb dongle with a PCI card, and the PCI card is the adapter with which im having the trouble. im at .5 mbps download speed now. Quote

Make sure other computers are not connected by wired or wireless. These would isolate if its bandwith hogging or an adapter problem. Quote from: Korvis on November 03, 2012, 07:57:19 AM

I understand that...it's a budget low-end card...i personally would save up for a replacement...yeah, but i would think even a low end card, brand new, would work better than that. and its not bottom of the barrel low end.All i know is that in flowchart analysis it's usually best to test hardware 1st...maybe just borrow a known good card and swap it in there for a few hours...that won't cost you at least...that would be ideal, but i do not have a known good card. all i have is that cheap usb dongle, which works, but screws up the entire network.

assuming that it is not a problem with the hardware, what are my options? ive tried re installing the driver multiple times now, optimizing tcp... i dont really know what else to do. windows 7 is not DETECTING that there is a problem with the hardware, or with the internet connection... the download speed is just really slow. the upload speed is ten times the download speed, which is the normal speed for upload, and ping is normal... it seems like i can play most games perfectly fine, but every once in a while it feels like the speed throttles down to zero download speed, which i can actually see sometimes with the speakeasy test. Quote

You need to try this if no other network device is available for testing.with nothing else on the network, i get a 1.2, rather than a .5And you don't know anyone you can borrow a WLAN PCI card to test ? ?

Solve : HD no longer recognized?

Answer»

I recently CLONED my older Parallel ATA HD (source) to a larger, newer SATA HD (target)  in my PC. ( I also had a third, older HD RECOGNIZED in the computer).  Thanks to help from this forum the clone worked great.

Today I removed the older (source) ATA HD as no longer necessary and the computer works great on the newer SATA HD. However, the older ATA HD which had been recognized by the computer as a slave is no longer recognized at all.  The jumper is set to slave, and I've even tried removing the jumper, but the drive isn't showing any longer.

I see where SATA doesn't use a master/slave relationship for HDs, but there should be a way to get the older, once recognized HD to work again.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Mike
Is it cabled correctly ? ?
Is it the only drive on the cable ? ?

MBoard======================slave=====master. If you had a master and a slave, and you removed the master, the slave must become the new master. Set jumper to master and use the right connector.

That's what's troubling. The cable that connected the old HD (master) was also connected to the HD that is no longer recognized.  The HD has power, is now the only device on the cable.  Removing the old master HD was the only change made.

The new SATA HD was always connected, and now serves as a 'master' and is working fine.  But the old HD that had been working is no longer recognized.  I've put the jumper on it to 'master' and still nothing. I've removed the jumper entirely and nada.

I'm out of ideas.

MikeIs the IDE disk on the connector at the end of the cable?
Right now the old HD is at the middle of the cable, as the HD that was removed was at the end.  But I've tried attaching the cable at the end and doesn't make a difference. Is it visble in the BIOS?
How can I check this?

I've checked thru Disk Management but the HD isn't seen.

Not sure where to check next. QUOTE from: coyote454 on November 03, 2012, 02:16:30 PM

How can I check this?

Check your machine documentation for instructions on how to enter BIOS setup and set up disks.

Solve : Screen Gone Black & Lack of Power-Down Command?

Answer»

I have a laptop and a netbook, I'm using the netbook to describe the problem with the laptop.

I did a driver scan of the laptop and the list of outdated drivers included two mice/mouses.  I recognized one mouse by name, and since I have no intention of using either mice/mouses in the future I opened the Device Manager, looked for hidden mice.  I uninstalled the drivers, carefully leaving my Synaptics pointing device.

Then I carefully looked for other hidden unused drivers.  I looked up each one on at least two websites to see what they were and what other people had said about them.  One group of drivers belonged to Computer Associates, a service I don't use any more so I uninstalled them.  Another group belonged to Norton Symantec and since I don't use them either I uninstalled those drivers.  Then I went to a website to look up the next group of hidden unused drivers and while looking at the website the screen went black.

All appropriate power buttons on the computer were still lit.  With nothing on the screen to guide me, I press CNTRL-ALT-DEL to shut off the computer so I could reboot.  The computer didn't respond, I tried it again, then had to use the power button.

I left the laptop off for a few minute.  The light that indicates the laptop is still plugged in to a power source was still lit, and when I pressed the power button the other power lights came on, and the computer seems to start up, but the screen stayed black.  I left the computer alone till I guessed it went through the powering up cycle, then tried pressing CNTRL-ALT-DEL again, and again, the laptop didn't respond, so I used the power button to turn it off.

I am sure I didn't uninstall anything related to the screen or anything related to power commands.

Is there anything I can try to get my screen working?  Is there a connection between not having visual and the machine not responding to the C-A-D command?

Hardware uses drivers...software GENERALLY doesn't except in rare cases.
I'll start with a statement then questions...

None of the Helpers here that have been around ever recommend any "driver finder" apps...or those all in 1 "fixit tools or registry cleaners"...
This is for GOOD reasons as you are finding out now.

What happened with the PC that sent you on a driver mission ? ?
Was there any glitches in it prior to these fixes you applied ? ?

More info on the PC in question and the OS will benefit a quicker solution as well...Somebody here gave me a link to something that led to downloading the driver whatever program.  I downloaded it but didn't use it because I was trying to accomplish something else at the time.  Then two days ago I clicked the logo because I forgot what it was the thing was supposed to do.  It gave me a list of drivers that NEEDED updating.  Since I didn't WANT the mouse drivers to update I looked around the net to find out how to uninstall them.  I read discussions on uninstalling other drivers for objects and programs that no LONGER present and since I will remove anything un-needed to gain space on the hard drive I looked at the different categories of installed stuff and when I saw something in faded gray I researched it.  I don't use the mice, I don't use Semantec, I don't use Computer Associates, so there was no reason to keep the drivers.  If I don't have to load them, that's something less than needs to load.  I've been trying for years to find out the source of my ever clogging hard drive and my periodically over heating laptop.
