A couple months ago I tried to free up some space and CLEAN up my computer.  I deleted all the temp files etc., but I also went through and deleted a lot of programs that I didn't need, WANT, or use.  Soon after i realized I could not play DVDs (I didn't even have a DVD icon in the my computer folder), I had no sound controlls or speaker button on the taskbar, I had no calculator, and I can't find any sound recorder.  There may be other issues, but that is all I know of so far.  A buddy took me through regedit and my DVD now works.  I downloaded a new calculator, it works fine. 

Should I just download a sound recorder?  And what should I do about the sound controlls that are missing?  Is this a case for system restore? 

I have a Dell Insperon E1505 with window XP.  Thank you for any input on how to resolve this issue.

Purchased new CompUSA HP Vista x32 Home Premium laptop for daughter's college.  Installing UNIVERSITY-issued 'Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007', 'September 2007', 'Applications STUDENT Media' DVD, w/ Product Key on back of plastic sleeve.

Keep getting prompted after installation to enter Product Key, but won't accept what's on back of sleeve(!?).  Tried x3.  You get 25 uses of Office without registration before lessened functionality suppossedly happens.

There's probably an MS Office Forum online from MS, but I don't see it.  A few weird things about  install:
1) Remarkably fast.  I called CompUSA afterwards to make sure laptop didn't come w/ Office already- they assured it didn't.
2) During actual install, no reference to Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or Access.  But, there was referral to 'Microsoft Office Communicator 2007', which is also in parentheses under 'MS Office 7007 Enterprise 2007' title.
3) There's a 2nd, very similar disc that we received upon purchasing Office.  Labeled very similarly, but has no Product Key, it's sub-titled 'Product Key Required', & is 'April 2007' instead of Sept.  Since the other disc had a Product Key, I installed it.

I installed the wrong disc?  I need to install both?  Go ask Microsoft?  If so, anybody got a good phone number or URL or email address?

The first thing that I would suggest is phoning HP.  They've got a really decent support system.I don't know if this has any bearing (suspect not) but a small Canadian software company just recently won a copyright infringement case against MS on their office 2003 and 2007 suites. Part of the penalty against MS was to cease and desist selling either suites in NA plus a 290 million dollar award to be paid to the other software firm. MS has indicated an appeal but they had already lost the same case in a lower court. truenorthEither way, give HP a call, they have to give you what you paid for.I'm a Microsoft Partner and am not familiar with that release of Office, but if it's University issued I'd check with the University.

I am working on a language project using Wordperfect 12. (Microsoft Word could also be used.)
I can use microphone, read a line from the text I am working on and save my own AUDIO into the same text DOCUMENT. Then, I click the mouse and listen to that audio. At the end of this project I will also INCLUDE 2 short clips (audio+video).

HOWEVER, after the project is done, I will need to save it in a format which is useable for public. I want to publish the project in form of a CD or DVD that opens on any computer.

I TRIED PDF format. I transfered a doxument into PDF, but I lost the embeded audio files !  What other software would help me with this project?  Please help.this is not really a windows question and you chose to post it here?

try power point or word maybe and look into sound embed commands in the help section of the software you are using.

Well the hardware will run it although you may want to add another G of RAM.

As far as the 64bit QUESTION you will need to reasearch all of your components especially the MBoard to see if there are 64bit drivers written for Vista.
There aren't a ton of applications written yet to optimise 64bit but you would be investing in the future so to speak.
The real key is making sure there are drivers for your components.
Whatever you decide Good Luck to you.Thank you very much. I most likely will go for the 32 bit.I would simply install the 32 bit version. That guarantees that you don't need to find special drivers if your device is supported (most devices should be supported) by windows vista.

And at least 1gb seems good if you don't care too much of video games on your computer or you have a low requirement game like age of empires 3.

But people have been saying that 2gb is a good number.

That's Office Ultimate 2007, not Windows Vista Ultimate.   

I tried to use partition magic to merge 2 partitions on my windows PC, but every time I click the merge button, an error shows up: the first partition (C: system) requires 433250KB of data to be freed to PERFORM the merge. The weird thing is, I did delete some files and programs from the harddisk to FREE some space, but that seemed to even worsen the requirement.. It started at about 233000KB, which has increased to 433250 now :S. I guess I'm doing something WRONG, but I can't find out what's the problem.


never mind, I got the solution. It did actually have to do with the amount of free space on the harddisk, though it is STILL KINDA weird, since it asked for 433.250KB and I had like 600.000KB free. anyway.. I figured there was like 800 MB in the trash on another account on the PC. I deleted that and it worked.

I have always transferred the pictures from my Canon SD750 directly to my computer using a usb connection.  All of a sudden, the computer doesn't pick up the connection from the camera.  Can it have something to do with the wireless MOUSE I installed via the same type of PORT?  Is this a front CONNECTOR ? ?
They are notoriously under-powered from most manuf.Yes, I am using one of the connections in the front, but it is the one I have always USED for this camera.Try a rear connector...doesn't matter that it always WORKED.

I've been trying to THINK how to word this post for several DAYS (before I actually registered), but can't see to find adequate words to describe what I'm looking for.

Basically, I need to write an instructional computer article on some sort of software (freeware preferably).

I have written several other articles, which I won't post here from fear of banning, but does anyone have any suggestions on an article I could write instructing people how to do something with certain software? I'm thinking of a topic that you would see in a traditional magazine type PUBLICATION, like Maximum PC, PC World, PC Magazine, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I realize this post has come off rather strange, but I'm not sure how else to explain what I'm looking for. How about comparing 2 freeware programs?

Okay I am having trouble with date FORMATTING in excel. This is what the cell has in it...2-09-1977. I need that date to be in 2/09/1977. However, if I right-click on the cell and format it as a date it TURNS it into a funky number. I have received this file from someone else so these CELLS were not formatted to be a date.

Please help!!Can you upload, i.e. attach to a forum post, an Excel file CONTAINING such a date?  To do that, click on Additional Options... at the bottom of the forum message COMPOSITION panel and use the Attach feature.

Okay I will try to be as thourough as possible here, please bare with me because I do not have a lot of experience with computers.

A few months ago I burned all the pictures from the last two years of my son and our family, and ALL of our memories on four different DVD-R. J

just recently I decided to IMPORT all the pictures back onto my computer. Three DVDs worked fine, but when I PUT the last DVD in containing pictures since Christmas up until now, the DVD did nothing. The other three POPPED up and I had the option to import all pictures.

So I clicked on my computer icon and saw the DVD RW Drive (E) which I am assuming is the DVD. It said the total size was 4.38KB and I had 223MD space available. So to me it seems like the pictures are still on the DVD, but I cannot find them. When I click on the DVD icon nothing shows up. I burned all my pictures on this DVD just like I did my others. All I did was put the new DVD in and than I guess it formated it and than I just dragged the picture files onto the DVD page, which is what it asked me to do.

I really need to figure out  a way to find these pictures and import them because these we're the only copies of our pictures I have. I can never get these memories back. Please if someone can HELP me and TALK me though it I would really appreciate it.

I am afraid that I somehow deleted the pictures off of the DVD, but I do not remember how I would have done this.
I have a Gateway Windows VISTA. DLoad and install the FREE version of ISOBuster...see if it sees the photos...
If so use it to extract them to a folder and re-burn them.

This is caused by a burn project that was not finalised...actually most times the CD/DVD shows as empty...

Set them both to Manual start, and see, if startup is normal.
If so, try to print something.Did that, and it works! tried to print, that worked too!  Im so glad!  I really did want to use it, but i got frustrated and restored to before i installed it, tried again and now it starts up fine again.  Thanks so much again Broni!

If it's thrashing as you say it doesn't matter who made it...I was meaning after the change of companies from quantum to ibm.  That is true.What is true ? ?about thrashingYour hard DRIVE is thrashing after IBM bought Quantum?no  , but its possibly is currently that or hums a little. If HP went bankrupt, it will not effect my HP computer.

I am having problems with above listed software starting up. This problem just started in last week or so, I am using a laptop with Windows Xp Home OS SP3, 2 gig ddr2 ram, 160 gig hd, intel core 2 duo processer, realteak sound card, and on board video.  The problem im having is when i open the program i get error message Could not load file ar assembly "System.EnterpriseServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Also after error message apears i click ok THREE times and 'SplashScreen apears'

after clicking continue program LOADS some functions work others do not.

Hey everyone, I am NEW here, and I am having some trouble fixing my external hard drive.

First of all I am using: Windows Vista Home Basic, Acer Aspire 3680-2354 Laptop/Notebook, 1 GB Ram.

Whenever I PLUG in my External Hard drive into my laptop, I get two error messages:

"Windows Explorer has stopped working"

"Windows Explorer is restarting"

Then my desktop blinks with its icons on it, and then re appears. This has a continous cycle. EVERY 20 seconds or so it restarts.

Heres the catch:

I reformatted my hard drive, removed everything on there cause I backed up my files onto other computers and deleted everything on there. I re put the files back onto the hard drive, and it still does this windows explorer thing.

Another thing is whenever I do not hook up my external hard drive to the laptop, my laptop is fine, free of anything.

*This problem only happends when I hook up my external hard drive into my laptop. 


I have been trying for days to FIX this problem, but still no luck.

       I WANTED to throw this out there to see if anyone had a solution.  I have a number of Word 2007 documents that contain tables that are identical in column width.  However, I have recently had to adjust the column width in ALL if them.  Is there a quick way to transfer the width properties set on one table across multiple documents?

There are sensors all around the PC. In mine they are:

- HARD Drive
- Under CPU

Kazaa removal is actually a pretty involved process to do manually or with Kazaabegone.

I suggest RUNNING both free versions of SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users  and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). That should get rid of everything.

Note: If you already have Malwarebytes and/or SUPERAntiSpyware be sure to update them before running the scans!

The problem started to occur spontaneously, with no warning and no apparent cause. MSN was working fine one day and then crashed the next day. I'm trying to combine two animated gifs into one IMAGE file. My goal is to only have one [IMG] tag but two animated(meaning I want them to still work) images side by side. I've tried fiddling around with DIFFERENT programs but they only paste the very first frame of the gifs. If there is a method in which to do this I would like to know so that eventually I'd be able to do it myself and potentially string TOGETHER 4 or 5 gifs to go across my entire signature area.

Hello -  I'm new to the forum, and looking for help with MS Publisher. Each time I try to save, Pub crashes. I had installed the update, then I tried a clean install, saw somewhere that too many fonts on one's computer could be the problem, so I deleted hundreds of fonts (what a waste of time, that didn't work either). Did not have the Office SP2, so I installed it, then all Office updates, no help there.  I have been combing the web for a solution to this problem, and have found nothing as yet. Does anyone else have an idea for a solution? I really need this program to work!!!!!

Resin Get the Leximark drivers here. You just need to download the drivers when you are on the internet, you don't need to have your printer with you when you do it. But you can just install it when you go home when the software may actually now ask you for the printer plugged in.  Don't RELY on that driver detective stuff, it RARELY ever works the way it's supposed to.

They usually just try and load on stuff that you don't need.but however, seeing that the link I posted is the official leximark site, you'll get the drivers you need there. I ASSUME this is a software problem and not a hardware. I have a Sony Vaio with Vista that's been updated. I have a Maxtor Plus 4 external HD that used to connect through the firewire and all of a sudden the computer stopped detecting the HD. It will connect through the USB THOUGH. I have the free version of mbam which l start up manually, so should this ACTUALLY be in the startup files, and if so, what's being STARTED up?

In SEARCH of a program that can change a file's timestamp(creation, modified) --using a timestamp from another file. I don't CARE if it is command-line. I found a program like this NAMED TCopy, that is from 2001. Unfortunately, it will not run on my x64 machine. Anyone know of a program like this?

People may have SEEN i recently had a huge discussion trying to figure out how to fix something on my computer and that got fixed....but obviously theres another problem.  I've had my video card for approximetly 3 years.  It's a Nvidia Geforce 7300GT.  It worked great for a LONG time.  But suddenly out of no my computer started acting weird with SCREEN distortion, off colour, and screen flickering.  I figured out that when my video card wasn't installed the computer worked fine but as soon as i reinstalled it the problem started it up again.  My computer only WORKS now when i have it on for maybe half an hour then turn it off right from the tower and back on then it seems to be alright until i turn it off and leave for a while then i have to repeat the process.  So im thinking my video card might just be fried but can someone tell me if im right or help me out if im not please? I don't really see how anybody can tell you ABSOLUTELY, for certain, that your video card is fried and that you need to get another one, because we'd need to actually be there at your house and have a spare video card to swap it with. However, for what it's worth, it sure sounds to me like it's defective. Its sounds like it is overheating. I suppose you have done the usual things such as checking that the fan is turning and not clogged up with dust?

my wife has windows vista home premium, service pack 2.  Intel cor 2 quad cpu, processor 9300 2.5 GHz,  Ram 4 GB,  64 bit.
Trying to INSTALL Epson Workforce 500 all in one.  Everything will install except scanner and in SAYS install unsuccessful could not find line in INF.  Now also getting code 28.

There was a similar issue with the 300 and Windows 95, they just simply wouldn't work together.

I've recently BOUGHT and installed some new parts for my gaming desktop:

*GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3LR

I also installed all the necessary chipset/network/sound drivers off the driver disk that came with my Motherboard, however whenever I start up Windows, the system seems to detect this "SM Bus Controller" as new hardware.

I tried to let Windows install the driver for it by itself, however it couldn't find anything.
So I checked the driver disk again for any MENTION of this "SM Bus Controller" to no avail.

I canceled the "Found New Hardware Wizard"

There doesn't seem to be any other issues with this hardware not installed.

I've checked the motherboard manual for any mentions of the "SM Bus Controller", and there wasn't anything mentioned.

I checked Google for an answer, however none of the results were relevant.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

WSRSM Bus Controller is controlled by chipset driver. Do you have any errors in Device Manager?Yes, I just checked and there's a problem device called exactly "SM Bus Controller".

I know I did not install any PCI cards onto the motherboard, so this may be a controller to manage PCI devices?Try re installing the chipset drivers.  It's not often that it happens, but sometimes a driver just doesn't take on the first go.Check the Gigabyte website for the newest chipset driver.I reinstalled the chipset drivers, and I saw that it did install the SM Bus Controller driver, so I'm going to check if its all ok.Let us know.I''ve checked the Device Manager, and there's freshly reinstalled chipset drivers there with no problem devices.

The SM Bus Controller has been installed under the device name - "Intel ICH10 Family SM Bus Controller - 3A30"

I ran a quick benchmark in the form of a game, and there was no problems either. (It seems my Nvidia 7800 GTX 512 is still GOOD, until upgrade time anyway).

I have a VIDEO file that has mp4 5.1 Dolby digital sound and and video that is avc1. I want to take the 5.1 sound and ADD it to ANOTHER video that's the same, but only has stereo sound. REASON is video is messed up on the 5.1 Dolby digital file. I have only seen ones that spilt the sound to stereo i want to keep the 5.1 sound to replace ONE that has stereo.This doesn't sound like an owned file.  We provide no assistance with piracy.

For some reason Windows Media Player 11 & 10 isn't loading, there is no error message, I just click on it and nothing happens. I opned task manerger and moniterd what happens when I try open windows media player , when I click on it to open it it loads but no physical window comes up, it stays on for a few sceond and goes off. 1. Click Start, click Accessories, the right click on Command Prompt and choose "run as administrator", then type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then hit enter.

2. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll then hit enter.

I bought Axis & Allies a while back and when I first got it, it worked great on my computer. Sinse then I have uninstalled it. Recently I installed it but when I tried to open the game, I recieved this error message:

Have your xp disk handy in case you are asked for it. Note the space between sfc and the /

Wanted to ask, im trying to add some language packs to my NETBOOK and it asks for my windows xp CD, i got one with the netbook the only problem is that there is no cd drive on it... tried to share my main pc's cd drive with the netbook but it doesnt give me acces to it... any suggestions?

Hi I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop & a Canon PixmaMP160 printer. I have USED some compatible ink cartridges that I have topped up using a syringe. Recently I had a problem printing or TRYING to scan items & a message CODE came up. I decided to uninstall the software, when I tried to reinstall the software (OE item that came with the printer), the CD spins & says its installing but although it says the installation is COMPLETE, when I go to control panel it's not installed. I have tried a restart since installing the software but that doesn't make any difference, can someone please help. Thanks Disconnect the printer while installing the software if it's a USB connection.Do as Patio SUGGESTS.  Used to be you would install the hardware first, then the software.  Now it 's backwards.  Uninstall the software, disconnect the printer, reinstall the software.  It will tell you when to connect the printer.

Ive looked in control panel & the only canon reference left in there refers to on line registration.

The software CD doesn't seem to spin up when I install it into the machine. it just spins slowly & clicks.

I THINK it basically sets rules for automatically naming files (if you prefer to have files named a certain way so you can easily find it) or automatically set specific download locations by a rule you set for files you download.

Once you get it working, it's pretty simple to use and it works well.

Then open your downloaded .jpg file with mspaint, that should work.

I think 'malware' would be a better term. It is possible.

I have 2 laptops with 60GB HARDRIVES in them.  In addition, I have 2 EXTRA hard drives that I use for backup purposes.  One is 160GB and the other 1000GB.  I have been using some software called Synctoy to regularly synchronize my PCs and my extra HDS. 

A couple of times now I have had a MAJOR problem in that I have lost a lot of data in certain folders.  It simply disappeared.  It seemed that both times this happened, I had used the ECHO function on Synctoy.

Since I am starting to accumulate a lot of pictures and music, my 2 PCs 60 GB HDs fill up pretty quickly.  So, I would like to store a lot of pictures and music ONLY on my extra HDs and keep the necessary LESS space consuming stuff on my PCs. 

Until recently I had only been using the synchronize function of synctoy and it seemed to have worked very well.  Recently, however, I have started using the echo or contribute functions.  Frankly, I don't really understand the difference.  I can't completely understand the definitions they give of ECHO and CONTRIBUTE. 

I WANT to do the following:

(1) Synchronize the "My Docs" folder between my PCs and extra HDs.
(2) On my PCs, delete all of the major stuff I don't need (like pics and music)
(3) On a regular basis, backup any new data that is added to one of my PCs
(4) Of course, I want to save any new data on my PCs and on the additional HDs. However, I don't want any of the major stuff that I deleted sent back to my PCs.

Which of the functions shoould I be using?  What should I avoid doing? Is Synctoy the best program out there or could anyone recommend another?

(A) I am very worried about losing data for a third time.
(B) I need a good consistent program I can regularly backup all of my folders with.

Any suggestions?

There may be other better backup solutions, but here is an explanation of the Synctoy options.

Using any of the three options, renamed, new, and modified files in the source location will be remaned or copied to the target location. The difference between the three options is in how deleted files are handled.

Synchronize:
This will make both source and target locations identical.
This means that any file deleted in either the source or target location will also be deleted in the other location.

Echo:
Using this option, any file deleted from the source location will also be deleted in the target location. Unlike Synchronize, any file renamed or deleted in the target location will not be deleted from the source location.

Contribute:
This option is similar to Echo, except that files deleted from the source or the target location will not be deleted in the other location.

Hope this clears things up.
