Solve : USB stopped working?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook running Windows Vista Home Basic. For some reason a few weeks ago 2 out of my 4 USB port just stopped working. I tried to reinstall the drivers but as soon as I would delete them they would reinstall almost instantly. I also tried running the restore disk and that didn't help the problem either. Is there anything I can do without taking it to a shop? (can't afford to take it in right now)

Thanks in advance.

Big JohnI suggest you do as SOMETIMES RECOMMENDED by CH forum senior member, patio. He says to open Device Manager and uinstall all USB items and then restart your computer and let Windows reinstall USB drivers. Quote from: soybean on May 22, 2007, 09:33:31 PM

I tried that but the drivers re-installed themselves almost instantly, I didn't have a CHANCE to reboot. What exactly did you do with the restore disk? Did you format the hard drive and reinstall your OS? Quote from: soybean on May 23, 2007, 09:41:16 AM

Solve : Diagnostic Flowcharts-really setup nice for most problems?

This is one of the best online flow charts I have ever seen.
If the Moderators think the same it could become a sticky topic
I am not affiliated to this person or company by any way, I just came
came across it and think it is a very good diagnostic process.

http://www.fonerbooks.com/pcrepair.htmI think it looks pretty good. At least now after going through it people may have some idea what thier PROBLEM is. I find it rather helpful though, our brains* in the forum might not LIKE it.... I require a magnifying glass to read it though Quote from: honvetops on May 22, 2007, 05:41:26 PM

I require a magnifying glass to read it though

Better get good glasses or change the RESOLUTION to a reasonable size
But really is it coming up small for you guys?
I use Firefox and my resolution is 1024x768 on a 19 and it is quite large on my screen.
Just curious. It looks fine to me, on my 17 inch monitor set at 1024 X 768 resolution. By the way, I came across that site earlier this morning via a Google SEARCH. Quote from: soybean on May 23, 2007, 09:27:37 AM

Solve : no boot computer?

Answer»

compaq

won't boot

nothing will appear on the monitor

F8 doesn't produce anything on the monitor,either

lights(power and both other disc drives) on the tower flash, and there is a rhythmic clicking NOISE

it's like it keeps going through all the drives, trying to read something/anything

can't get the other 2 drives to eject

i THINK it might be a mechanical problem, maybe something locked up

fan does run when turned on

our LAN first goes through it,and my computer's INTERNET connection is fine,so there is some kind of life to it

i tried to FOOL it by trying to start it with a floppy in what i think is the A drive, the first place it looks

i hoped that would at least produce an error message on the monitor

this same problem has happened before, and it did start working after a few bangs of the fist

this time it happened just after a power outage that happened while it was doing a windows update, but i don't think that caused the problem

i think it is mechanicalThe rhythmic clicking noise is an indication of a failed hard drive. You may have other components which are also faulty due to the power outage, including your motherboard, video card, etc.

Does the computer use onboard video or an add-on video card? If a card, you might try to get an OLD one somewhere and install it to see whether you get anything on your screen. Even if your hard drive has failed, you should see something on screen.

To test the monitor, hook it up to another computer.

If you verify the monitor is working, I'd say you've either have a faulty video card, motherboard, or both.

When you get a working system again, I highly recommend getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply, i.e. a battery backup unit). They'll protect you from a catastrophic power interruption, which seems to be what happened to your system. And swap in a known working PSU of equal or greater wattage to see if it is the culprit.

If so replace it but don't buy a cheap one.

Solve : Help with troubleshooting my Pci adapter?

Solve : Mini Keyboards, Any suggestions??

Answer»

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing awesome.

Let me start by saying this is not an emergency.
I'm asking for suggestions from you all out there regarding the following:

I have an old desktop (Dell Optiplex 755 runing Wondows 7) that I use as an entertainment center, Hooked up to a TV, and that I use mainly for Youtubing, and watching movies on nexflix, etc.

The machine itself is actually irrelevant, what I want to know is regarding these llittle wireless keyboards/Touchpads that are out there. I used to have one that I absolutely loved right up until the momento when it stopped working. I need your INPUT on buying another one. I've LOOKED a few up, and so far the ones that have struck me as aceptable have been these:

http://www.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Touchpad-Keyboard-Android/dp/B00JO80LUI/ref=pd_sim_pc_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=17BBF3E6MMYWB1PW8S2N

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KGMG3SK?psc=1

They all have their good and not so good points. I want backlit (For night-time viewing), but I also love the big surface on the on that is touch panel...
So there you have it. Can any of you point me in the right direction?

This one (Just FYI) is pretty much exactly like the one that broke on me, in some Brand I can't even remember:

  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KGMG3SK?psc=1

Maybe you guys have experience with these gadgets, and might want to help a fellow gadgeteer out...
You know what brands / Model types I can get to ensure durability withough coughing up a ridiculous amount of MONEY.
There used to be one that kind of looked like a Blackbberry, but instead of a screen it had the touchpad there... that would be awesome, but I haven´t been able to find that one.

AAAAAAAND, GO!Any particular reason you need something tiny, they tend to be fiddly to use? I have a pair of Logitech K400s, they are decently sized so you can type properly on them but are hardly massive and work brilliantly.

I'd also suggest getting one that has its own dongle RATHER than a bluetooth one - Bluetooth tends to be pretty temperamental, dongles tend to just work.No Reason in particular why I need such a small keyboard, other than I basically use that computer as an entertainment center, and a big bulky keyboard and moue just don't look o well. The ones I posted are about the size of a remote, which suit me fine. I'm just not so sure about quality. On Amazon they have some user reviews. That may give you some idea of the quality for the devices. The prices seem to be very reasonable.

I like it and is great when USING the phone as a movie player with the HDMI cable plugged in which is at the TV so you can use the like a remote/mouse/keyboard.
fsum242|25reviewers made a similar statement
In fact, there are mouse buttons at the top left and top right of the keypad that are very similar to the left and right buttons on a game controller.
Steve|23reviewers made a similar statement
Testing • Build The buttons and feedback feel just right.
Keyboard Remote Control - Amazon.com‎
It seems that many people like that particular device in spite of the low price.
It may be this is a case when price and quality do not go together

I used to have one of those small mini ones, it worked but it was a bit fiddly to use. I can highly recommend the Logitech K400 keyboards (I have two of them), they are of course larger (Same size as a typical laptop keyboard with a touchpad on the side) however they are extremely usable since you can properly type two handed on it.

For the cheap ones on Amazon your only real option are to read the user reviews - They are usually generic devices with very little in the ways of professional reviews.

I just try to update my graphic CARD driver, but after i installed it, a yellow parallel line pop up on my SCREEN, and it remains there even after i uninstalled the graphic card driver, i tried update my monitor's driver, didnt WORK either. Anyone knows how i can fix this? is this mean my monitor is dead? Can anyone COULD help me fix this problem! thx a lot!
PS: the yellow line even shows on the loading screen when i restart computer.

Graphic card: Geforce 6800GStry a different monitor, just to rule that out.

Always try to rule out the simplest things first..."Newer" drivers aren't always the best drivers...try rolling back to the previous ONE. If the symptoms persist try the monitor on another machine to rule it out as the culprit...

Solve : dvd/cd hardware not found?

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

It was working fine 4-5 days ago -- Lights up at boot --- nothing been removed--
My Comp lists 4 devices F,G,H, & I- pretty sure it's F or I ? How to tell for sure ? I saw the advice to uninstall and reboot - and windws would reinstall --would like to make sure doing right one --- I would really prefer not to sys restore to 5 days ago-
after 3 days of screwing around with windows firewall not displaying settings tweaked services running and turning off norton FW FINALLY got that straightened out so I can connect to poker clients and have added some stuff don't want to lose in a sys restore. When I try to update driver wiz says already have best driver--
Yesterday fixed MODEM problem (not really sure how I did it sheer persistance and much cussing I guess ) , so some jiggling around was done --but if it lights up -- it's probably in there OK right ?

Can anyone guide me thru options besides sys restore ?

Solve : WIndows ME locks up CONSTANTLY, NEED HELP!?

Answer»

Hi All!

Just need some ideas on what may cause my Dell Gx150 to lock up constantly when not in 16 color VGA mode. When the onboard drivers are installed for the intel 85815 graphics controller and set to 256 colors (or higher) locks up while scrolling, any games, internet...etc. Only works in VGA mode 16 colors. Pulled DMA out and installed a AGP 4x card with no luck. All fresh drivers, Direct x 9 installed (no errors), no errors in Device Manager, sais all is well. Ram is good, switched out with known good RAM , still have same problem. Checked HardDrive with scandisk, no problems there either.I suspect a bad motherboard? Driving ME NUTS!!!!! ANy ideas are helpful.

Here are my specs:

Dell Optiplex Gx150, Intel 1.0GHZ
512 MB Mem
onboard graphics controller by intel 85815 chipset
Windows ME installed

thanks!
HeidiWhay happened prior to all of this? Surely it has not always been that way.Bought computer used off of Ebay for my kids. Hard drive was wiped when I got it. Not sure how it was prior to me BUYING it. I am comfortable with changing out the motherboard. Just don't want to replace unnecessary components!

Try an out of case build

[borrowed from another site]pcmech
We're going to start from scratch.

1) Remove EVERYTHING from the case
2) Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can ACTUALLY conduct electricity! We are going to try and assemble a running system outside of the case.
3) Install the CPU and heat sink.
4) Install 1 stick of RAM.
5) Install the video card and attach the power supply connection to the card if your card needs one.
6) Connect the monitor to the video card.
7) Connect the power supply to the motherboard with both the 24pin main ATX Power connection and the separate 4 or 8 pin power connection.
Connect power to the power supply.
9) Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected.
10) Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual to find which two pins connect to your case's power switch. Then touch both pins with a screwdriver to complete the circuit and boot the system.

If all is well, it should power up and you should get a display. Then assemble the parts into the case and try again. If the system now fails to boot, you have a short in the case and need to recheck your motherboard standoffs.

If the system does not boot after this process, then you most likely have a FAULTY component. You'll need to swap parts, start with the power supply, until you determine what is defective.

When starting a thread about your computer, be sure to include full specifications including brands, models and your power supply. This is important to help us help you.
OK, so you bought it used and it has never functioned correctly? How long has this been? Have you tried contacting the seller, if this was a recent purchase? That's how some computers end up on eBay.

The GX150 was a decent machine for it's time. Unfortunately, they go bad eventually as any other machine. For now I would remove any add on video card and just use the inbuilt one. Run a test on the RAM with a free download at www.memtest86.com. Run each stick for about an hour and then all together. Did the RAM in question all come from that machine?

Next, download the appropriate drive maker's utility from their web site. I think those models tended to use Maxtor. If so go to www.seagate.com and download SeaTools or the Maxtor one (PowerMax)

Windows is not required for these exercises. You will end up with bootable floppies. You may want to first clear the NVRAM. Press down the caps lock, Num Lock, etc., until allthree lights on the keyboard are on. Then press Alt+E and hold down until it STARTS beeping. Release the keys and LET it stop, then reboot.

Post back with your findings.

Solve : My processor speed: 1.09 or 1.8 GHz??

Answer»

My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ that is supposed to run at 1.8 GHz. I looked at my system properties and it said that my CPU speed was 1.09 GHz. Why is this? Is my processor not running as fast as it should be? I play PC games, and the game I play most OFTEN requires a processor that is at least 1.7 GHz. Is this why the game is so choppy? How do I fix this? This is the one billionth time this post has been made

When this processor is first fired up it is typically defaulted to SAFE (read slow) settings.
This is done by design to assure a first-time startup.

Download and run CPU-Z and tell us what processor core you have and someone will help you set it to design speed.
It's probably a Barton, but I want you to verify that.I have run Bartons on more than one system. The default clock speed of the AthlonXp 2500+ processor is 1.83 GHz. That is the speed it is meant to run at, the speed it should be run at, and the speed it ought to be run at. Any underclocking that is seen in a newly installed cpu is due to CPU clock settings being wrong in the BIOS or to plain cpu / motherboard incompatibility. What I am saying is that contrary to what Gubelman wrote, it is not a default behaviour. It is a fault.

Please give motherboard manufacturer, model number, and BIOS version and date.

It is a Barton.

motherboard manufacturer- ASUSTeK Computer Inc., model number- N78NX2.0 REV 2.xx, and BIOS version- ASUS A78NX2.0 ACPI BIOS Rev 1010. Date- August 4th, 2004.You should go into the BIOS and check the front side bus speed is 166 MHz and the cpu clock multiplier is set to 11. If not, make it so. Consult your motherboard manual for details of how to do this.
After you run an intensive program, is the speed still the same?
The CPU may be THROTTLING down. When you navigate your way into BIOS you will probably find your FSB frequency set to 100 MHz.
That would give you the CPU speed reading that you are seeing.
This is normal for a for a first startup or for a system that wasn't properly set up.

Typically, once the FSB is correctly set, the CPU will report it's design speed.

AMD AthlonXP (Barton) 2500+

CPU Speed = 1833 MHz (1.83GHz)
FSB          = 166 MHz
Multiplier    = 11.0
L2 Cache = 512KB

Memory Frequency:
166 MHz

Internal System BUS Frequency:
333MHz

Check your manual for dual-channel memory support setup (if any)
Remember, that if you have to clear CMOS, your system will likely return to these so-called safe settings.

So you're saying I should overclock it? And it isn't really overclocking if I'm setting it to its design speed?Overclocking means increasing the voltage.

Setting the FSB to 166 is NOT overclocking unless the memory you are using is not DESIGNED to handle an FSB of 166... Okay, that's what I meant. Thanks for the help. Quote from: Raptor on May 20, 2007, 09:22:22 PM

Solve : Computer locks up/turns itself on after being shut off?

Answer»

Hi,
I have an IBM Aptiva Desktop running Windows XP (newest service pack) with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor and 756MB of RAM. AVG Free anti-virus software with SpyBot and Ad-Aware for spyware.

My problem is that when I had the computer at school it would turn itself on about an hour or two after I shut it down, so I would just leave it unplugged to prevent that from happening. Now that I've brought it back home (at home the computer is not connected to the internet) I'm having problems turning it on. It'll START the boot sequence then stop, so I'll reset it by holding down the power button. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 resets to get it to stay on (during these times I get an option to boot in safe mode and some error message: ERROR 0162 Configuration error, that either prompts me to continue boot up or enter setup using the F keys). Once it's on it'll freeze up on me with in ten minutes, unless I just put on some MUSIC and leave it alone then it'll run longer. I've never had this problem while I was back at school but as soon as I brought it home this has been happening. How can I fix the problem?

Also I've ran AVG free scan on it (before it can freeze up although the scan doesn't finish) and it notes that three files have been changed, they are: user32.dll , shell32.dll and ntoskrnl.exeAnyone? The changed files AVG is reporting is not necessarily an issue.

The exact error message and some more details could be helpful. What was different between school and here? Have you played about in the BIOS? Other issues with the machine?I haven't messed around with BIOS. The message says:
ERROR
0162 Configuration Error

The only difference between here and school is that the computer has no internet access at home.

I opened it up to see if anything isn't damaged inside, and after I hooked it back up it won't even start. It gets power (light goes one) but the screen stays dark and the computer doesn't initiate the boot sequence.

I know this is separate from the problem at hand but what could have caused the computer to turn itself back on while I was at school. Are you FAMILIAR with the CMOS battery? It may well be holding some power but, weak. Quote from: street1 on May 20, 2007, 05:47:28 PM

No, I'm not... but go on.Read the below site.Cost is about 3-7 US dollars.

http://www.liverepair.com/encyclopedia/articles/cmosreplace.aspI got it to start today and it just doesn't keep track of the correct date, it was a day behind in time. Could I attribute this to another problem or is it still a CMOS battery problem. That's usually an indication the CMOS battery is weak or dead.
Remember when working inside the case to remove all power SOURCES and take anti static precautions...

Solve : Computer Shuts Itself Down And Now Won't Turn On??

Answer»

I recently UPGRADED the CPU yesterday and the computer was running in perfect condition yesterday and today. I was playing a game and about a minute after I was done playing the game and was exited onto my desktop... my computer powered off.

So I waited about 30 seconds and turned it back on... it didn't turn on. The speaker that will beep never beeped- and the only thing that happens is the LED lights will dimly turn on. I had to turn my PC off by flicking the switch on the power box in the back. But no display- no nothing. The only fan that will turn when it is on is the rear fan and it barely spins. Aside from that- only LED lights from my fans will turn on and its dim. Is it a power box failure?

My computer is custom built!

NEWEST CPU: AMD FX 8350 (Previous one was a 6200)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3
RAM: Crucial Ballistix SPOT 16GB
Storage: WD RE2-GP 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5
Case: Sentey GS-6400 Arvina ATX Full Tower
Windows 7 Home Premium

I only know my power supply is 550W. I had a PC repair place swap the one I have now with one that was defective back when I was building the thing and had issues.Have you tried putting the old CPU back in?
The new CPU may have failed.
Maybe you have to CHECK your motherboard again. What make and model of power supply is in the system? This should be on a sticker that is stuck to the PSU itself.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3541. I recently bought a 240 GB M500 Crucial 2.5 inch SSD. I replaced my stock 500 GB HDD with it and re-installed WINDOWS 8.1 via USB. Everything seemed fine and dandy until I went to restart my laptop. So this is what happens when I select the "restart" option from windows:

The laptop will begin to restart and when the Dell symbol shows up it just stays there and doesn't load windows. If I remove the battery wait a bit and restart the laptop, it will go to the Dell symbol again, after a long delay it will finally load windows. It will do the same thing if I select the "shut down" option and turn it back on. (Long delay, than windows).

What I have done so far:

Updated all my drivers (including BIOS)
I downloaded the crucial SSD firmware upgrade software, and it said that all my SSD's are up-to-date.
My BIOS is set up to UEFI (Not legacy), I changed my sata type to ahci, and my boot priority is the the crucial SSD.
I have tried repairing windows with every option offered

Please help!!

thanks all!!

Questions.
How old is the laptop? (Dell Inspiron 15 3541)
Have you installed SDD before?
Does Dell have commendation for how to use a SSD?
Did someone recommend that you remove the hard drive and install the SSD?

Can you GET back to the original configuration? If so, taht would confirm that there is no problem with the hardware.
My only suggestion is to go back to the original configurations and then run diagnostics on the SSD.

Thanks for the quick reply,

The laptop is less than a few months old
I haven't personally installed an SSD before, but I had some guidance from an experienced hand.
I checked the web for Dell and SSD, nothing to be found. I guess I could try calling customer service.
I have a desktop with an SSD and the speed really got me spoiled. I couldnt handle a regular HDD on this laptop so I purchased a SSD to speed things up. (Definitely working)

When you say the original configurations, what do you mean? Like re-installing my HDD?? If so, I dont understand how i can run a diagnostics on my SSD with my HDD back in its place. I only have 1 hard drive slot in my laptop.

Thanks again!!
My bad. Some new laptops have an EXTERNAL SATA PORT. Yours does not.
My knowledge is limited. I think some laptops are not suitable for SSD. But I am often wrong. Dell does mention the idea is some advertising.

In an industry-standard benchmark test of read and write speeds, the Samsung SSD–based Latitude E6430 demonstrated 6.65 times better disk performance than the HDD-based Latitude. Such a dramatic performance gain means that end users may notice their laptops responding significantly faster, enabling them to work more efficiently than before.
I think, but not sure, some changes have to be made in BIOS. Sorry I don't have that information. Perhaps others know more.
There are videos on You Tube that claim it is easy to put SSD on a ell laptop.
In BIOS I'd make sure that FAST BOOT option is set.
In BIOS I'd make sure that S.M.A.R.T is shut off since sometimes this can cause issues with SSD's where the system is looking for HDD.
In Windows when it finally boots, i would look at the event logs to see what it shows for warnings or errors. It might not state anything here since it sounds like its hanging before windows even loads, but maybe Windows can detect and point out an issue with the SSD etc.Where was this Win 8.1 from ? ?Thanks again for all of your replies

To answer you guys:

Windows 8.1 was OBTAINED from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
and booted from USB

Also, I enabled Fast Boot in the BIOS, but I cannot locate S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS.

Although I am not familiar with it, here are 5 screenshots of the first 5 errors in my event log:

If you have any USB drives attached, disconnect them. Your boot order is still looking for them first.

Solve : What video card should I use??

Answer»

I'm building a new computer here, and I guess I'm gonna start with the video card. The budget is around $150 and I plan on doing video editing and some not so heavy gaming. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Hoop2077Look in the FAQ section of the forum about video cards.

Your computer or motherboard make and model would be required to know what type of card(s) are options.Well, I haven't chosen any other parts yet. I wanted to start with a video card first. But if anyone has an IDEA of a nice motherboard/video card combo, that would be GREAT as well.

Thanks!
Hoop2077If you get a really nice AGP video card, but your next motherboard does not have an AGP card, you will be down $150, or whatever you spent.

If you are getting an nVidia based motherboard, you probably don't want an ATI video card.

If you buy the video card first, it may well be obsolete by the time you get the rest of the components.

Etc. I find that designing a BUILD is always kind of a catch 22. You know that you want a PCI-x16 vid card. But you also have to fit your processor, mobo, power supply, DVD dive, RAM, and hard drive into your price range too. What is your budget? That is usually a good starting point, and then people who know about what things cost can help you pick out a worthy system. My budget is $650 worthless american dollars.

Thanks!
Hoop2077Why are all these 512 MB cards fanless? Do I need a special fan for it? Or do I just need good air flow INSIDE the case?

Thanks!

If they were worthless dollars they wouldn't be getting you a new vid card now would they ? ?

Solve : 486 Board Compatibility?

Answer»

Are 486 boards compatibile with all 486 processors? No. There is none.
Why do you need one?
actually I need a socket 3 board and unfortunately, people selling mb's on ebay don't always know what socket their mother board is. I'm considering a board that has a DX4 processor and need to know if a DX2 processor will work on itHi

A board that supports a DX4 CPU will support a DX2. To be sure perhaps post the motherboard you have and the one you intead to use to replace it, To confirm. Quote from: Lisa_maree on December 17, 2014, 12:24:42 PM

Hi

A board that supports a DX4 CPU will support a DX2. To be sure perhaps post the motherboard you have and the one you intead to use to replace it, To confirm.
Thank you Lisa for that info I'm building an AT DOS 486DX2/66 gaming machine and in info/parts gathering mode I do have another question. I would like to have between 128k and 256k of L2 cache on the motherboard. If I cant find one that has it, is it possible to add that to the motherboard?
I assume the way to check L2 cache on the motherboard is in the bios, right? Some of the later model 486 boards had a Cache slot available to add a Cache module. This did not become popular though until the Pentium's came out with the newer socket.

Here is a motherboard that I do not suggest buying because its not universal and lacking PCI slots etc, but has a 256k Cache module. They are out there, you just need to find one that matches all specs you have. This is an already working board with CPU, Cache, and RAM. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-09-00144-01-486-DX2-66MHz-16MB-RAM-Baby-AT-Motherboard-w-VLB-Slots-/311190503432?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4874664008

For how cheap a 486 motherboard is with processor and RAM included, you might as well go with a known good combination VS buying a motherboard without a CPU already stuffed into it. If a board is being sold without the CPU, then someone has PRIED the CPU out of it. If they claim its a working board but no CPU included then they still pried the CPU out of it.

I'd avoid buying a bare used board that doesnt come with a CPU already in it.

Some other things to consider when buying a motherboard of the 486 era:

Do you want a motherboard that has the Socket 3 which is press fit CPU into socket or the more modern eject lever?

Do you need any PCI slots or just ISA 8 and 16 bit slots?

Do you need PS2 ports for Mouse/Keyboard or are you going to go with a larger AT keyboard and a 9-pin serial mouse?

Are you looking for a universal AT type board or a specialty board for the case you are using?

Do you require any VESA slots?

Most 486 era motherboard CMOS batteries are BAD and most are leaking or have already leaked onto the motherboard, are you prepared to have to replace this battery without killing the main board?
(* Years ago I had to fix a board that the acid leaked out of the battery and ate the traces off of the top of the board through the mask, and instead of placing the same battery back into it, i had a 2 x AA Radio Shack battery cradle and so I wired that up for my 3 volts to hold the system time and BIOS config info. )

Do you have an older power supply with the P8 and P9 connectors to it?

----------------------------------------------------------------
Lastly you might find it cheaper to buy a whole computer already assembled and working vs assembling a 486 system piece by piece!!!No pci slots needed, I don't think they exist on 486 boards, at least not on the dozens of them I've seen in the past. I didn't know they pressed those processors into the boards back then, thx for that info. Basicly I'm looking for an AT form factor Socket 3 motherboard, 256k L2 cache on board, 486DX2/66 processor, 2-3 VLB slots and 4 or more 16bit ISA slots.

I've got a Buslogic SCSI card that will fit into a VLB slot (which is about equal in speed to pci) which will take larger hard drives than the IDE with room to connect 7 devices. I can get a PS2 adapter for the keyboard but will probably have to use a serial mouse (both available online).

I'm getting a new big AT case on Amazon. I plan on replacing the CMOS battery with an external one that plugs into the motherboard. I've NEVER done one of these old boards before.
This board has more connection options http://www.ebay.com/itm/131376307288?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It also has a lockdown lever for the processor (which I already have). Only thing is it doesn't have regular P8, P9
power connections. hmmm

I know it's going to cost more this way but half of the fun for me is building and customizing. 486 systems were typically PCI/ISA about halfway through their lifespan. In particular 486 boards that supported a Pentium overdrive pretty much always had PCI/ISA. I've never seen an ISA only 486 board myself- usually it is either PCI/ISA or VL-Bus/ISA.

the 486 CPUs used Socket 3 (as you've mentioned), which was Zero-Insertion Force. Cheaper motherboards didn't use the standard Socket 3 and instead used a modified version which was Low-Insertion Force. I've never seen them myself, though. Typically removing a CPU was as one would expect- you lift a lever and remove the CPU. Sometimes it was a plastic tab or small metal rod that you pulled SIDEWAYS, and personally my sample size is only one, but the 486 system I had previously used a ZIF socket and there was no requirement to "pry" out the CPU.

I've never seen a header for an external CMOS battery, though I haven't looked for them. Every board I've had aside from a 286 which used a cigar-*censored* battery used a CR2032.
This board linked here had the socket that required a special CPU removal tool that grabbed at the corners of the 486 or as i had to do back in the day.... carefully pry up each corner evenly with a small flat head screw driver until the CPU could be removed trying to avoid damaging pins, and then push the replacement CPU into the socket. The socket next to the CPU on this board was either a 487 math co-processor or overdrive socket. And the socket that the 486 is stuffed into is the same socket type on this board. It may be low insertion force, but most were pried up to get them out at their corners.

I've been working on computers going back to the 1980s with 8086, 8088, 286, 386, and lots of 486's in the early 90s with the SX ( = s u c k s ) processor in which I was quite busy upgrading people, mostly gamers, to the DX processor for both the 386 and 486 systems. Many of the CPUs had to be pried up carefully at their corners although the 8086 and 8088's I never had to remove as for there was no drastic upgrade back then other than finding an 8087 if you could afford one and needed that complexity of math computed.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-09-00144-01-486-DX2-66MHz-16MB-RAM-Baby-AT-Motherboard-w-VLB-Slots-/311190503432?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4874664008That is for a pre-built OEM system, and I think it might be an earlier one, so it may also be a case of manufacturer's at the time adjusting to the newer, standardized ZIF sockets (as opposed to the 386 and earlier where you had surface mount and basically any mounting socket the manufacturer wanted). I believe the one I had, personally, was a later VIA motherboard, and it had on-board sound (if my memory serves- a, ESS audio drive). Mine was a very late model as I understand since it was a 120-Mhz DX4, enough to require a CPU Fan.

I'm not sure what the upgrade CHIP could be. It's not a Overdrive slot since the overdrive had ~235 Pins, and that has 169. It might be that the motherboard was for a 486SX and thus supported a 487 (which would otherwise be built into a DX). Or perhaps a proprietary upgrade slot.

Solve : Problem in DVD burning?

Answer»

I have recently bought BENQ DW1800 DVD writer. When I try to BURN any data in DVD disc using nero, it burns but give some error msg"error:cant write disc at once". When I INSERT that dvd disc again in DVD writer, it(dvd writer) unable to read the data in the Disc. When I try to write more data in disc, a error msg appears "not able to write data in an open disc". I could not write any DVD successfully since I have bought it. I have wasted 4-5 discs because of this error. Is the problem with DVD writer or DVD disc or Nero? Not Nero, because many people use that successfully. Is it a newer version?

It could be the burner. You could try it in another machine to see if th eproblem persists. If that is the case, return it. There is nothing you can do to fix it, and you don't have to try.

It could be the discs. What brand? Some drives are very particular. If you could borrow a different brand from a friend or two, that might help with the problem. Are these DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW or what? What speed are you burning at?I DOUBT it would be Nero as well unless it's an "ahem" version...

You could grab CDBurner XPPro though and try it...it's free. Quote from: GX1_Man on May 19, 2007, 03:39:24 AM

There is no problem in burning CDs, the problem is with DVD Discs. DVD is DVD-R type and the brand of DVD Discs is writex. http://www.writex.net/
I burn at Nero's auto defined speed. I dont define its speed myself. The Writex site only lists CDR's. Apparently Writex does produce a dvd -r blank disk.
It would be interesting to hear from the OP , which version of Nero is being used .
The fact that they say it burns and cant be read is odd.

OK, I will try other good brand like sony.Whenever i buy a new burner i borrow, buy a blank media from everyone i know COVERING all the name brands and some generics....about 15 to 20 in alll.

I then do a test burn of a mixed media folder i saved for this purpose. It includes music, video, data and a few small apps and Zip files.

This lets me know which media to buy for that burner. Sometimes even the brands the manuf. suggest have problems. This way i know for sure.

Nothing worse than a spindle of 100 blanks that are worthless in your burner...

Solve : toasted mobo??

Answer»

Ok, here is my situation.....

Had windows XP comp. It was an Emachine Etower series i believe, more info on it later including exact specs.
XP died, some problem with the desktop tool bar not showing up nor icons, normal remedies tried and no success.
Tried to install Freespire, a free version of linspire that is completely legal.
Freespire Live from CD worked, after install was completed and i was instructed to remove the CD, screen goes black.

this has been the way it has been ever since. On boot, it will post and then revert to black. It will not boot from CD. Cleared CMOS, as suggested earlier here under the guise of a different problem, didnt have any effect.

CD drive OPENS properly, so i have no reason to believe that it is the problem. After trying an in-the-case no frills rebuild of it, no success. I know it is one of maybe 5 component, in my opion, that are most likely to have failed: Mobo, HD, Proc, RAM, CD drive

any help?

eMachines are notorious for poor power supplies that frequently take out other components when they fail. I hope this did not happen with you, but your first step would be to install a known working power supply of at least 300 watts and see if the MACHINE POWERS up.

If you decide to buy a new power supply, don't get one of those $10.99 "el cheapos" or you will be back here soon posting other problems. lol, if that was the case, i was planning to buy a solid 500w PS that i could reuse in a different build if it turns out that this thing is truly fried.

Thanks for the advice

Solid for me=Antec, but others are good also. You can often judge quality by the price and the weight. More is generally better, but use a quality brand nonetheless.

       NetworkHuH ? ?Hi

Yes it will boot from some USB drives if the pendrive is formatted to emulate a hard drive. And some pen drives are manufactured that way.
If you google: format a pendrive to emulate a hard drive
There is lots of good TUTORIALS explaining why your computer won't boot from USB devices and how to create ONES that will.

I have absolutely no idea how you are answereing a question not asked...

However...carry on. Clarification.
I intend to use a Bootable Flash Drive to install OS Vista. It can be done if the PC has an USB Drive.
Since it is not LISTED on the Boot menu, I thought that removable might qualify.
Does anyone KNOW?

Yes, typically Flash Drives and external Drives will be the "removable" option.

Solve : Hard drives dying in succession?

Answer»

Hey everyone!
A friend of mine has had TWO hard DRIVES die on him in the passed two weeks. Both time he got the message BOOTMGR missing. I removed the bad hard drive and everything worked fine for a couple weeks then the second one did the same thing. So i removed it and now his computers still working with the one hard drive he has left. The one left is a newer hard drive and was luckily the one that had windows installed on it. The other two hard drives were older so they might have just died because of that reason but i want to ask if there would be anything that causes hard drives to die in quick succession besides old age. Before i removed the second hard drive, he was also having problems with his system shutting off randomly while playing games.Hmm.

My cousin had the same problem. He said it came from downloading corrupted files.

Like a fake demo of a game, infected textures, ect..

So, if ya wanna stay away from this, download avast!.

avast! Is an anti virus program that will stop you from downloading suspicious files. Hope i helped! That could be it, he does download alot of texture mods and other things for street fighter and other fighting games. And the hard drives that these files were saved on are the ones that died.
Thanks for the REPLY, i'll check it out. But i would still like to explore this a bit further so please keep the answers coming people I'd check the hard drives on another system and use a tool such as crystaldiskinfo to check the S.M.A.R.T data on them for errors. You might find that these drives have no problem and the real problem was that your power supply was slowly dying and by removing each additional hdd that was weighing down the power supply you lessened its burden of a power load.

* Boot Manager missing when say drive C: has windows on it and drives D: and E: are just data STORAGE in which you first removed E: and then got the system to boot fine and then back to Boot Manager Error and then removed D: and then it worked again and then now your getting the same issue with your only drive left as C: as well as random game crashes to me points out a power supply may have slowly died on you.

I had a very similar situation happen in the past with a system with extra hard drives for storage and i actually triggered the situation by adding my 3rd drive for extra internal storage which was the tipping point in the life of the power supply. I removed the 3rd HDD and within a week later I was having to remove the 2nd HDD.

When I checked my voltages my 5V was 4.76 volts and my 12 volts was also really low at 11.18 volts. I replaced the power supply and the problem was fixed. That is a great explanation. Thank you! that was actually something i considered in the back of my mind but i shrugged it off because the psu isn't more than a few years old. It might just be the problem though. i'll have to get another psu to test it though. anyway, thank you for the help!SpeedFan will tell you the PSU's voltages...and it's Free...

If you have no objections to a desktop, I'd say go for one instead of a laptop, they're more powerful for the same price and MUCH more upgradeable, also easier to troubleshoot. My budget is from $1000-$1600Canadian.go for ram, and video card ,if you get a video card, a geforce 7800 gt.
Plus don't buy a brand name computer, get a clone easier to upgrade. If you're comfortable with it, I recommend building your own.
You can get exactly what you want, and it'll be cheaper.
The downside is that you have to know what you're doing or you'll fry something.

More RAM would aid multitasking and make games load faster, 2Gb is a good sweet spot if you have cash left over, if not then it's easy and fairly cheap to upgrade.
That gives you a good starting point, what else do you need help with?Try a build-your-own. 1 Grand will get you an entry level Core 2 Duo build, using an asus p5b vanilla and 2 gigs of ram. Throw in a 7900GS is you can afford it, otherwise the recomended 7600GT. Below is one of the builds i planned, though never executed. It is all compatible, though you can up the proc to a E6600 if it pleases ya, and add hard disk space.

(I am basicly giving a parts list of what the guy above me said)
I am assuming you are in canada, which newegg does not ship to. Overclockers.co.uk will ship there, and those prices are somewhat similar.

Solve : Faulty Motherboard [Heating Probe]?? Gigabyte 965 DS3 Pro?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

Recently built a system for a client with the following (relevent) specs:

Gigabyte 965 DS3 Pro
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320
Antec P180 Case
Thermaltake TR2 550W PSU
(if you require any additional specs please ask)...

The cpu has the stock STANDARD heat sink and fan combo on, but with arctic thermal paste.

My question is this:

After installing everything and all running without a hitch i noticed that it is RARE that the heatsink fan ever spins... Only when the cpu is at maximum load does it ever seem to consistently spin. At all other times it is just stopped and occasionally pulses. In the normal boot up it NEVER runs, just pulses.
This occurs with different heat sink fans, and after reseating the cpu and heat sink etc. The motherboard has the latest bios update.

What really worries me is the MB cpu heat probe NEVER goes above 32 celcius... I've had it in testing under load (100% cpu loading) for the last 4 hours and it is STILL sits at 28-32 degrees celcius... The fan only spins at 600 rpm at the best of times.. Remember this is the stock standard heat sink and fan...

Is this normal for this cpu and motherboard? I've NEVER ever seen anything remotely like it, and my impression has always been the cpu to IDLE at around 40-50 celcius for dual core... Even the system probe is generally hotter than the cpu...

I'm pretty sure it is a faulty motherboard probe, causing the fan to fail and not run properly (as temps are inaccurate...) but wondered if anyone has/is having similar issues with this combo/motherboard....

Any ideas would be appreciated before i begin the long arduous journey to get the motherboard replaced... Hopefully before the cpu fries...

Any other info you'd like please don't hesitate to ask...

Best regards,

Tom
Travel HereSo.. Do you have any problems or not?

Because if you do not, you're obviously a blessed man.

I wouldn't be so sure something is wrong. Sounds like this CPU runs cool.

Runs really cool even on stock.

Thanks guys! Great responses... I did some futher research also and came up with similar things about low temps (and much lower power than the AMD EQUIVALENTS...)...

I'll be getting the flat temp probe, would be GOOD to add to the arsenal...

Its just so shocking to find it at such low levels... I'll keep a close eye on temps before handing over to the client, but it still hasn't fried...

Obviously blessed...

I'll post back here with any future findings if anyone else gets as baffled as i am by this chip SERIES...I wish i owned a chip that ran that cool. Quote from: patio on May 20, 2007, 06:34:26 AM
I wish i owned a chip that ran that cool.

Me too. This thread has got me making plans for when replacement time comes around... I am running a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4, a Prescott, in a little Shuttle XPC case, and it idles at 40 - 42 and gets up to around 60 at full load unless I set the fan speed to "deafening". I have had it for 2 and a half years and performance wise I am still perfectly happy though.

Artificial plasmas (medical) are perfluorocarbons. Fluorinert is a perfluorocarbon. Just not packaged and tested for medical use.

compunurse mini temp probe on the way in the post.... Will have a proper test shortly...I knew that the P180 case had magnificent cooling, but i didnt think it would be that great. What sort of case temps do you get?On full load the case temp never really passes 32/34, when ambient room temp is at around 21... thats with all case fans on their lowest settings.... Having the PSU completely seperated from the cpu seems to play a major part...just a question, do the heatsink fans feel warm to the touch under load? Don't electrocute urself, and make sure your grounded, but if they are relatively cool then Intel has finally made a chip that can compete to AMDs in temp as well as performance.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I'm very new to building PCs, this one will be used for a lot of multi media like editing video, 3d animation/modeling and some graphic design. I'll also be gaming a hefty amount on it. The main thing I'm worried about is the parts not fitting in the case or the parts not being compatible ect. Also not sure if you guys think I should buy any extra fans to add to the ones that come with the case.Looks good but I would recommend getting a better brand of motherboard such as Gigabyte or ASUS, shouldn't cost that much more. If you aren't going with two video cards there is no NEED for an 850w PSU, you could save a good amount of money by getting a 550w-650w unit.Yeah, motherboard is the thing I'm least knowledgeable about so I really had no clue what brand is best quality and stuff so I'll look into those. The high wattage PSU is so I know I'll have the power if I need it for future upgrades or anything ELSE I might need, I may drop it down to 750 though.UPDATED BUILD LIST:

Solve : BenchMark Score low??

Answer»

I have just purchased a Gigabyte Geforce G1 Gaming graphics card and have done a benchMark test using FurMark. I have the resolution on FurMark set to 1024x576 and I'm getting a BenchMark of 3602. I then do the same test with my 970 overclocked more and then get a BenchMark that's actually lower 3601? Can someone tell me why I'm not getting a benchmark over 4000 plus like many other people get using this card? Thanks!

Motherboard: Gigabyte X58a Ud3r
Cpu i7 930 overclocked 4.0 Ghz
Ram 12 GB
Psu Collermaster 700 Watt
Graphics card Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970.Curious as to if your games run better at this overclock or if there is any noticeable flaws while running overclock. As for an overclock does not always guarantee faster/better PERFORMANCE. Reason why i state this is because I once overclocked my CPU and GPU to the max and my frame rate in the games instead of holding steady was now jumping all over the place due to lag and surging. it wasnt until i backed off on the overclocks which were 12% initially down to about 10% that I found the sweet spot to where I had a performance gain and no problems. I also ran the benchmark at baseline wrote down this value, after 12% overclock and wrote down this value, and saw oddities in the results measured, but when gaming the flaws in these overclocks stood out like a sore thumb vs staring at Windows desktop. When I backed down to 10% I had consistent overclock scores showing the gain and games ran better and most importantly the system was running ok and not crashing.

I was using passmark 30-day trial edition for my benchmarks. Many many other factors can affect benchmarks...RAM speed, FSB, HDD read and write speeds, CPU, etc. etc...I just ran a system test and the score shows the HD having a score of 5.9. The rest of my scores are 7.9 so would this indicate that it's the hard drive? Would a SSD INCREASE my score by alot more? Probably...It certainly would help your system feel a lot more responsive but not sure it'll make any difference in Furmark as Furmark is just a GPU stress test.
I would perhaps give one of the Unigine benchmarks a try, Heaven or Valley, and compare using that as Furmark isn't a realistic benchmark or load test, it's mostly only good for testing maximum stress and heat generation. That said, it's also possible as above that your overclock just isn't STABLE especially if you clocked the memory, modern cards use error correction meaning you might not see artifacts or crashes, just slower performance as the error correction kicks in.

Solve : How To Copy CD??

Answer»

I have a CD containing MRI results that I want to make a copy of. I have a Dell Inspiron 660S running Windows 8 and can't find info on how to make a copy. Can anyone help?
use any cd / dvd copying software to duplicate the discYou MIGHT have third party software on your computer that will do this. New computers often have one or more programs installed that will burn discs. For example, my HP Pavilion Notebook PC came with CyberLink Power2Go Media Suite; it can be used to CREATE copies of discs.

HOWEVER, I believe you can also do it via Windows File Explorer. With the disc in your DVD drive, open File Explorer, right click on the DVD drive (should be under This PC), and choose Burn to disc, and proceed. The first step in the procedure is creating a file on the hard drive so that the source DVD disc can be removed and a blank disc can be inserted. Then, you should be able to continue with the actual burning to the new disc. Right clik the file and report it's properties and file extension...

This comes up about once a year here and if i remember correctly the file cannot be viewed without the proprietary software the MRI MACHINE uses...In most case they are just pictures that can be viewed on any system. However, the question was how to copy the disc and that can be DONE with any disc copy software. It has come up in the past and that is my recollection of the end result...I found Power 2 Go hidden in my apps, used it and successfully made a copy. Thanks to all! You're welcome.

Solve : Flashing blue light on wireless modem?

The D-Link DSL-2730B WIRELESS + MODEM ROUTER attached to this Windows 7 desk top PC has been operating successfully for years. However, on TWO occasions recently I have noticed that flashing of a blue light on the side of the modem has started up. The modem still operates normally. I have not been able to find out in the documentation I have or on a D-Link forum what it is indicating. Your Manual...

There is no blue light listed...There may be no blue light listed in the manual but the simple fact is that it has now been flashing for over 12 hours. Quote from: patio on December 21, 2014, 06:36:07 AM

I still do not know what it indicates but it has not caused any problems in the computers connected to the modem by cable or wireless. EDIT: It is a green light. On the side. It signals a WPS is going on.It is a blue light and flashing when it occurs. It can be turned off by pressing the window. The WPS has been operating satisfactorily for years without the light flashing. I looked at the manual and did not find an blue light.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve SPACE]Could be like my DIR-625,
The undocumented button on the right side, near the front is a WDS or Wireless Distribution System button.
Also known as the WPS button. When flashing during firmware updating, mine is blue, too.The button which is blinking blue is the WPS button. It will be blinking to show that WPS negotiation is ENABLED, waiting for the clients. This will blink for about 2mins then go off. If that is not happening for you, I can think of 2 things to do: 1. Disable WPS via the web configuration page. To do that, go to Advanced > Wireless settings > Security settings . Then under WPS setup, select disable from the drop down. Don't forget to click on save at the bottom of that page. 2. Reinstall the latest firmware (only if you know what you are doing).

Solve : What are the slots next to the slots for RAM on my Intel motherboard??

Answer» HI,

Just wondering about what looks like the 3rd and 4th slots for RAM on my Intel 850 motherboard... I just updated my RAM and, when I saw those extra slots, thought 'Why don't I put the old 512MB RAM in them? That way I'd have 3GB total?' The RAM pretty much fits, it just doesn't close on one side (those clip things). However, either that is not good enough or the slots aren't for RAM as the computer doesn't say it has them when I boot it up. It says I have 2GB rather than 3 and, when I put the new RAM in the slots before (because I am lazy!) it said there was only 1GB of RAM rather than 3. Can anyone tell me what these slots are or why I am having TROUBLE GETTING the RAM correctly into them?

Thanks,

jamesWhat is the full model number of that BOARD? What kind of processor?See GX1_Man, pictures could come in handy In reply to your question about the board model, it is an:

the processor being:

those details according to my invoice from dabs.

Solve : Custom Built Graphic Design/Gaming Computer?

Answer»

Hi all, my BROTHER and I are looking into getting a new computer; a custom built one.
Our main needs would be Graphic Design(I.E. All Adobe Programs such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After effects). I work on large projects and its very frustrating having to wait an hour for the computer to render the footage or effects in the program.

Our secondary objective is for it to be good with gaming, we are pretty big into gaming and are mainly looking at something that would be able to support a 24/7 minecraft server or a game like Farming Simulator 2015. The computer we have now can not run FS 2015 all that well and the Minecraft server we had running experienced a lot of lag and down TIME due to the computer not being able to keep up.

We have been trying to put together a computer on CyberPowerPC.com that would suit our needs. But both me and my brother are not versed at all in the hardware of computers and what we need for each thing. I am not completely incompetent as i work also as a tech guy for a church but i am nothing close to expert on this stuff.

I was wondering if someone might be able to go on the WEBSITE and put together a computer for us that would work for what i stated above or help me WALK through putting one together myself. We don't want nor need top of the line but we also don't want anything super basic.

Our price max is about $1,600 but would like to keep it closer to $1,500.

A response ASAP would be greatly appreciated as we are desperately in need of a new computer!Just a remark. If you are doing real work and get paid for it, you want something more than a $1500 computer. Buy a computer with app rice equal to two month's WAGES. And keep it for at least a year and it will pay for itself.
Just my observation.
You can safely ignore the above, $1500 is a good budget.

Something like this would be a good start: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1GMAEG - It has a very powerful CPU, an SSD, good amount of storage and a decent video card for running games. You may want to consider upgrading it to 16gb of RAM if your budget allows to help video editing but as it is it will still be an extremely good machine.

Solve : Motherboard screws?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm BUILDING my first COMPUTER and have a question about what type of machine screws to use to install the motherboard in the case. The case came with brass standoff nuts that are threaded but they didnt pack the screws with it. I went out to buy machine screws that would fit but could only find steel screws. My motherboard manual says not to have any metal components on the motherboard or in the case that could cause a short circuit. Does that also apply to the screws? I think it is ok to use but i want to make sure. Otherwise you would have to use plastic screws...

Thanks,
EvanYou can use metal screws yes. You can probably get some screws designed for motherboards quite cheaply online.Brass or steel screws are the usual type. The type is determined by the standoffs you are using. There are two main screw types, "6-32" (most common) and "M3" (less common). Practically every electronic/computer PARTS store will sell bags of 50 or 100 of these for small change prices. Or you can get them online. A store may allow you to take along a standoff and try which thread type 6-32 or M3 you need, although standoffs are very cheap too.

If you look at each screw hole on the motherboard you will probably see a RING or circle of trace metal designed to contact the metal screw for earthing/grounding purposes.

Thanks, I figured it was OK. I actually went down to the local hardware store in my PARENTS town and they had the 6 32 screws. I thought those little dots around the screw holes might be related to grounding. Quote

I thought those little dots around the screw holes might be related to grounding.

They are for grounding. The board has a ground plane that is joined to the chassis ground via the mounting screws. If you used plastic screws you could run into a floating ground issue. I'd advise using metal screws that have a cap/head that do not exceed the circled area of mounting. Some screws that may be perfect thread size and length may have an unusually larger cap/head to them which can make contact with component leads or traces near by and cause problems. as long as the screw top does not make contact with component legs and you dont see any traces running under them that the mask gound become damaged and short to ground, you should be all set.

In the motherboard mounting hole picture that Salmon provided you see a white circle around the mounting hole, as long as the screw top ( cap/head ) doesnt overhang out of this circled area then your good to go. *Also do not over tighten the screws as for you can crack the PCB material damaging the board.

Solve : Computer reboots while gaming?

Answer» Hi guys i really need your help.
I dunno why and how my computer reboots without any error message while playing games. I thought it maybe my PSU prob and i bought a new 500W PSU but still got the same PROBLEM. Maybe a corrupt OS (windows 7- ultimate 64bit) and YEAH my Gpu goes 94 degree+ and has gone over 104 while gaming but when i start my pc its temp is aroung 64*C which again i guess isn't normal.
Amd Fx-8350 processor
Nvidia Geforce210
HyperX 8gb ram
windows 7 -ultimate 64bit
Your GPU temperature definitely isn't normal for that card, does it have a FAN and if so is it working?
I suspect it's either badly clogged with dust or that the heatsink isn't attached properly, those temperatures could certainly be causing this issue.

That aside, what make and MODEL of PSU did you buy? Bad PSUs are also a COMMON cause of random reboots.Nice choice on the italics...

Solve : I need help with gaming?

Answer»

Right, so Christmas came and I GOT a NEW Lenovo Laptop, I love it but the only downside is;

I play a game, (Runescape) and I often used Fkeys (FUNCTION Keys) and for some reason, on this Lenovo Laptop, the fkeys have a different use to the game that I play.

For example, If i press F4 without "Fn" then it closes the client/browser I have open, this is HIGHLY frustating as I regularly press that button, and In the situation I play in I don't have time to press FN everytime.

I have researched this issue online but can't find a fix that works.

Any help?I'd consider a hotkey app since the defaults won't work...Do the keys normally do the hotkey functions such as brightness and volume controls without the Fn key being pressed? If so try this: http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/ht072691 which will make them do the Fx functions by default and then require Fn to be pressed to do the stuff like brightness CONTROL.

Solve : Screen flickering in Chrome after upgrading to XFX R9 270?

Answer»

Hello, I recently installed an XFX R9 270 graphics card (upgrade from a Sapphire 5770), and I've been experiencing some screen flickering while using Chrome.

Whenever I mouse-over certain things, like the bookmarks bar links, the screen flickers causing a line to appear near the bookmarks bar (sometimes slightly lower), and my bottom toolbar to move.

This happens more often than not, but it has given me moments where it works perfectly. I tried running some benchmarks to test and stress my GPU, which all ran fine (Tomb Raider, 3DMark 11). So far only Chrome gives me issues.

I've reinstalled Chrome, the drivers (using DDU), and the vbios. I have no clue what causes it, so I'm not sure where else to troubleshoot.

I recorded a video of what happens here:

I had a couple of issues with an older AMD card causing flickering in Firefox, disabling hardware acceleration resolved most but I ended up forcing the card to run at a constant clock speed as my issue was related to the clocks dropping too low.

Solve : Z87 Motherboard Won't Enter Bios?

Answer»

Hello! My motherboard has been acting weird every since I bought in in May, but it has finally gotten to the point where it looks like it may be completely useless. I want to try as much as possible to figure out the problem, or I will be forced to send it in for a replacement with the lifetime warranty.

I have a Z87 Mpower motherboard. When I turn on my computer, it will be display the A2 error in the BOTTOM right hand corner of my monitor. I turn off my computer and reset CMOS, then turn my computer back on. I will still see the A2 error, but then it will go to a screen that shows all my ports and devices plugged in with the options, "Press F1 to Run SETUP" and "Press F2 to Continue." Pressing F2 does nothing. If I hit F1, on the bottom left of the screen "Entering Setup" will pop up, but it never does go to the setup.

I've tried removing the battery for more than 15 minutes, making sure cords were plugged in properly, powering off everything, switching the bios (I have a backup bios)... Nothing seems to do anything. I can't access the bios, nor enter Windows 8. Any advice on what to do, or is my motherboard just defective?

Thanks for any help! This is really frustrating. Also, not sure if this is relevant, but it started acting like this when I did an update (for just Windows, I'm assuming since I was prompted when shutting down my computer) then shut down after the update was complete. Did you flash this BIOS ? ?
Did you try another CMOS battery ? ?
How was the BIOS backed up ? ?Sorry, not sure what you mean by flashing the BIOS. I'm not too experienced with computers.

I haven't tried another battery (that is the CMOS battery, right??), but from day one my motherboard has been weird. Wouldn't the battery be an unlikely culprit? I bought the case, motherboard, RAM, and power SUPPLY (EVGA 500B) all at same time at a Microcenter.

There is a built-in back up BIOS in my motherboard. I activate it by flipping a switch, so I can easily switch between them.

When the A2 error first started appearing, BIOS was still accessible after clearing CMOS, and F2 would run Windows 8. However, when accessing the BIOS setup it often froze (the temperatures and time weren't updating in real time; it would instead refresh every X amount of seconds). Also, not all information would be displayed in the setup like it should, and keyboard commands weren't all being responded to by the system.

Admist trying to solve this, less than two weeks ago I was removing and then putting everything back in when I broke the original CPU cooler. I replaced it with a Cooler Master Hyper T4 cooler. After installing it to the motherboard and plugging everything back in, my motherboard accessed the BIOS and loaded Windows 8. I shut down my computer and reboot it three times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. A few days later (two Fridays ago), I shut my computer down like normal. The next day, the problem RESURFACED. This is where I currently stand.

I also APOLOGIZE for the slow response; I had to resort to using my iPad to type this up. Quote

Admist trying to solve this, less than two weeks ago I was removing and then putting everything back in when I broke the original CPU cooler.

Curious as to how this got broken? Was the board dropped, crushed, or something pried against the cooler that broke it?The original CPU cooler had these plastic screws in each corner, and I just twisted them with enough force to break it. Because of that, the cooler couldn't make full contact and thus started overheating. I was eventually going to upgrade it anyway, so it's not so bad. My current cooler doesn't use those plastic screw things, thank gosh.Ok... I would actually take advantage of the 2 year warranty that this motherboard has then. MSI boards are known to be hit and miss as far as good and bad boards.

http://us.msi.com/page/warranty/

For RMA replacement I would state to them that it has the A2 error and its non functional, and resetting CMOS doesnt help.

You will need to carefully remove your CPU, RAM, CPU cooler setup, and other addon cards and send them the bare board back. Its usually a 1 for 1 where they will send you a replacement board as SOON as they receive yours. In some situations they may be able to send you the replacement board before you send yours back although through this process they would probably secure the replacement board via credit card or payment and then give you a refund when the dead board is received. The last motherboard I had to send back to manufacturer was not a MSI, but was a Foxconn and it took 2.5 weeks to get a replacement board. They offered an ability to get a replacement over night but I would have to pay for overnight shipping as well as I could secure the replacement board with credit card until they receive the DOA board. Overnight shipping was going to be $119 for a $55 motherboard and so I declined this offer for sooner.

Should I upgrade to 1000W or is that over kill. I dont plan on doing any upgrades to this system in the next 4 years850W is more than sufficient for that system, and in fact leaves you quite a lot of headroom, you would even be safe to drop the PSU down a notch or two if you wanted but the Supernova is a great QUALITY unit.

Solve : Editing videos?

Answer»

I'm not SURE if I am in the right place. I filmed some videos on my iPad from a video already playing on the TV. I copied them to a file on computer, but when I open them up - the whole videos are upside down. I know how to edit pics and docs, but how do you edit a video? Quote

I filmed some videos on my iPad from a video already playing on the TV.

If this was to create a digital video of a copyright movie then its illegal

One might suggest holding the ipad 180 degrees different next time, other than that I cant assist with this because it sounds illegal. It isn't illegal as it was family photos created years ago and were being shown through a video CAMERA on to the screen. I just tried videoing from the screen. Solve : Processor issue? GPU issue? RAM? I need help?

Answer»

I'm on Win7 64x
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual processor 5400+ ~2.8GHz
GPU: GeForce 8500GT 2030mb
-All drivers up to date
4Gb of RAM

The problem:
-The whole computer will freeze when I am playing certain games that PUT more load on the computer. For instance, BLACK Flag can't make it through the first cut-scene, but other games like Torchlight 2, or Half-Life 2 can be played for a while and then it "randomly" freezes.
-However, games aren't the only way it crashes. Closing Google Chrome I feel like there is a ~33% chance it will freeze when I close it.

1.From what I have observed, when it freezes, the speakers output a 1/16th repeating sound for a few seconds, then it stops. Sounds similar to this:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7_0c6DwzbNcVHRpbDhnUDhNWkk/view?usp=sharing (Might want to turn volume down)
2.The computer becomes 100% unusable, the mouse does not move, Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work, so keyboard is unusable as well.
3.I noticed the light that usually blinks on the wifi adapter stops blinking as well.
4.The monitor is an old CRT type and when it freezes, it sounds like the monitor turns off, but the picture is still there, just everything is frozen.
5.Lastly, I had a FireGL gpu before, and this freezing problem was never an ISSUE. Leads me to believe it is graphics card issue, I just need a second or tenth opinion.

I hope this information is enough to help you help me determine issue and maybe even solve it. Thanks -NathansswellCheck temps of CPU and GPU with a tool like speedfan.

Also run memtest86 on this SYSTEM to make sure that your RAM is healthy.

Solve : problem connecting second monitor to graphics card?

Answer»

hi!

I may or may not have a problem so my question is basically - do I have a problem? I tried chat but I think I wasn't clear enough.

specs: Gigabyte z78-ds3h
            Intel 4770k
            2x4 1600mhz gskill ram
            Gigabyte g1 gtx 980
            Acer 120hz monitor dvi
            Benq 60hz monitor vga
            Corsair 750w psu

Nothing is overclocked and everything is updated. I have one dvi monitor and one vga monitor. I can plug in either of those on my gpu but not both on the same time. One of the monitors just goes stand by mode. So i have plugged my second monitor to motherboard. It works but on chat they said it would never work. I see no problem so far except I cant use nVidia control panel to control second monitor and if I right mouse click the second desktop it brings up the Intel control panel which works.

So basically I just want to know what kind of problems there could be with this kind of setup? Could it pull too much power through motherboard by having second monitor be connected by that way or why this is a bad idea? I have stuff like Winamp and Chrome and Steam chat open on my second while playing on my main. So far I havent seen any other problems except that nVidia control panel thingy..

hmm.. Actually I have 2 questions
I have my old gtx580 which works just fine. Could I put that on my pc and use second monitor through that? It mean I would have to buy new MB but I guess new motherboard is cheaper than new monitor.

thx

Best results would be a dual video out video card.

This setup you have will not damage anything, but the display that is driven off of the integrated video will not perform as well as the one that is connected to the single video out video card.

The old GTX 580 if it has dual DVI or 1 DVI and 1 VGA you can use that for driving both monitors. For using a VGA monitor on a dual DVI card you can get a DVI to VGA adapter.Hi DaveLembke.

Sounds good. I was going to buy new motherboard anyway because this one has only one pci-e slot. Would it be a problem if gtx580 has only 1,5g vram when gtx980 has 4g? I have ran out of vram in some games with 1.5g. I'm not worried about the heat because my case has good airflow. Both cards are Gigabyte windforce models.Where is the VGA output?
Hi Computer_Commando.

its the lower dvi port with vga-to-dvi adapter. If the adapter fits the upper one, try that. Lower ones are usually primary, upper ones secondary.

VGA adapters are SUPPOSED to need the upper 2 or the bottom 1.
Are you using the adapter that came with the card?
You can't use the VGA on the mobo if you have this card. This has been basically solved already. All i need to know now is does connecting both monitors on gtx580 limit vram to 1.5g. As I already told I can use either monitor alone just fine with gtx980. But if I connect both monitors to gtx980 my main monitor goes stand by mode. Adapter looks like the top one. Port on gtx980, as you know, doesnt have that gap. But it works just fine if I connect it alone WITHOUT main monitor.

Quote

This has already been answered. I'm using it atm and have no problems besides I can't use nVidia control panel for settings. I'm playing CS:GO with my main and Chrome is open on second monitor.

On chat people got frustrated by my noobiness and I thought it was because I just wasn't clear enough. I honestly don't know how to say this any clearer.

DaveLembke already told me this setup doesn't damage anything and advised me to plug both monitors to my old gtx580.

Btw gtx980 didn't come with adapter. It came with gtx580 or radeon 5870. I don't remember. You don't listen...and you have been given excellent advice...
If it does not work it's on your end. Quote from: patio on December 28, 2014, 05:46:14 PM

He has made it QUITE clear, or so I would have thought, that it is working perfectly fine. He wants to know of the equipment he has might provide him with a better option.

With regards to the adapters: the Video Card needs to be outputting an analog signal in order for the adapter to work. Looking into it in this case one of the ports does in fact carry a Analog signal. I cannot find any reference that shows which of the two connectors does so, but what I was able to find certainly indicates that only one of them does. I did however find numerous parts lists for the card packaging that state it comes with a VGA adapter.

Quote

If you connect both monitors to one card, you are only using that card, so yes. if in this case you had the 980 installed as well it would be doing nothing, unfortunately.

Quote

Not really a problem, IMO. Only one monitor is being driven by a Nvidia card. The other is using your on-board Intel GPU, so each one has the options for the actual card behind it. What you mentioned about pulling too much power is untrue. (Monitors don't pull power through their display connectors- they pull it from a wall outlet).

I think you ought to explain further what happens when you try to use both. You mention REPEATEDLY "first monitor", "second monitor" "primary" "secondary" etc. and how the main monitor goes into standby but I don't think you mention which inputs each one uses. It does work as is as you've shown but presumably your goal is to have both monitors driven by the 980.

-If you plug the DVI monitor (the Acer) into the top connector by itself, does that work?
-If you plug the VGA connector into the bottom connector and reboot, does that work? If not, what happens?
-Can you swap the connectors? If so, does that work?

Hi BC_Programmer.

Weird thing happened. I tried one more time and plugged both monitors in video card and Acer stayed stand by, just like all the times before. Benq turned on with 1600x1200 resolution which is weird because its 1920x1080 monitor. All the icons that were round before, like Steam or Chrome were flattened a bit, earth shape. 1920x1980 wasn't even in the list to choose for when I right-clicked desktop and selected resolution settings. There were no nVidia control panel on list when i right-clicked desktop. So I downloaded and installed nVidia driver again and rebooted. Now everything is perfect. I have no idea what happened because i have done this same thing more than 5 times before, every time when geForce Experience found a new update for nVidia cards.

You and DaveLembke were pretty much the only ones that understood my broken english or what was going on so thx both and of course everyone else that tried to help.

I will mark this as Solved for now and get back later if I somehow brake this again or if this was just a luck.

Im happy camper again, in de_dust2..

Solve : noob help please?

Answer»

im building my first gaming pc. i have picked out all my parts and have done a lot of research. here is my list and my questions.

1x Asus Maximus VI HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

1x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor

2x SAPPHIRE RADEON R9 270X 4GB Dual-X Video Card

1x AMD R9 2400 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory

1x Corsair Professional Gold 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

these are just the main components, i am also using a 2tb harddrive, 120gb solid state drive, fullsize coolermaster tower and coolermaster v8 cpu cooler.

im trying to build this pc so there is not too much stress on any one part. i was gonna go with the sapphire radeon r9 290x 8gb gpu but decided to crossfire and use the 2x 4gb cards. i was wondering if i should use 4x 4gb ram sticks instead of 2x8gb ram sticks? I would strongly advise against Crossfire - You use twice the power, produce twice the heat, pay a fortune and don't get anywhere near twice the performance. Get a single better card. You also don't need a silly amount of VRAM, 8gb is purely there for marketing, for any regular resolution that you would be gaming at even 2gb is more than enough.

I would also recommend getting 2x8gb sticks (If you really need 16gb, you probably don't) as this will leave extra expansion room later.i was gonna get 1x sapphire radeon r9 290x 8gb, but havent decided. and also 16gb of ram is as much as im gonna go. my original plan was for 2 corsair 8gb ram sticks. but i want as least amount of stress on the parts as posible. thats why i was thinking 4x 4gb ram sticks which would still be a total of 16gb of ram. im just trying to go down the best route. any advice is welcome and much appreciated. That doesn't make any sense. 4x4GB doesn't "reduce stress" compared to 2x8GB.like i SAID im a noob at this. thats why im asking for help. im not looking to be criticized or belittled. i just wanna be lead in the right direction. and i need plain and clear answers. im speding over 2k on this build, and wanna make sure its done right. thats why i say any help or advice is appreciated.

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/pcgamingnoob89/saved/wJcNnQThat LOOKS fine apart from the PSU, the CSM series aren't great. You would be better off with something like an XFX XTR or EVGA G2. 750w is fine though.thank you. according to pcpartspicker.com im pulling 506w which i think is at an idle. correct me if im wrong. they say that the sapphire radeon 8gb graphics card can pull up to 434w by its self under full load. but i will never put it under full load with the games ill be playing. and i read that the PSU's run best between 50-80% load. i have to go by what i read and watch. i have no personal experience. i will look into the other PSU's you suggested.Yeah, you could even get away with 650w if you needed to. Also don't pay more for the 8gb 290x, a 4gb one is more than sufficient.

Solve : Strange silkscreen notation near RAM Internal & External Graphics?

Answer»

Friend of mine lost his motherboard and was looking for a cheap REPLACEMENT. Looking at newegg I found this board that I am not going to suggest to him because its only DDR and only 1.5 SATA, surprisingly very out of date board, but looking around on the board this caught my EYE near the RAM slots.

For External Graphics
For Internal Graphics

With the board linked here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157338

Question I have is... when it comes to Integrated GPU or added Video cards that share with system RAM, ... can the shared memory actually be specific to only certain memory slots shared for Internal (integrated ) GPU and External ( added on video card ) GPUs?

I thought that when it came to shared memory for the GPU no matter if integrated or add on video card that it shared from total RAM, and so it could share disproportionally between 2 slots with random memory addresses for whatever is in use and the memory controller was responsible for setting an allocation for the GPU and keeping the juggle as far as what memory is graphics data and what is regular data all randomly scattered in the RAM as next available RAM addresses become available to store new temporary data until the address is flagged free to reuse with a new 0 or 1.

I included a pic as well with a green box around the strange silk screen on the motherboard.

I think I am going to point my friend to ebay as for for a 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo and needing a board that supports DDR2-667Mhz the other options at newegg are in a price range that if he is spending beyond $50, such as a Gigabyte brand socket 775 board for $75, he MIGHT as well just go with a newer build for like $150 in parts ( $60 Motherboard, $60 CPU, $30 RAM ) and reuse all other parts from current build in a newer more powerful configuration rather than sink 50% of a new build cost into an otherwise not so powerful Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8Ghz.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I don't know for sure but it may be intended to line up with the model number that is silk screens on the other end of the RAM slots. In this case it lines up with the "for external graphics" line, but I imagine other models which have an internal AGP video adapter and no AGP slot might have a similar model number that is silk-screened to be on the same "line" as the "for internal graphics".

It also might be related to FSB ratings related to the RAM since AGP as I understand worked as a multiplier of the system FSB clock speed.Found this in the instruction manual, not sure why it is printed on the board though:

Because Asrock.

Dave, you could also look into solutions like the Gigabyte Brix and similar machines - tiny, power efficient PCs using Atom equivalent CPUs which would provide adequate performance (ALONG with 4GB of RAM and an SSD) for the average user. I don't know about the US but over here they're about £80, plus say £25 for RAM and then a small SSD makes them an attractive alternative to rebuilding older machines if there's no huge performance requirement. That may well not be appropriate in this case but thought I'd suggest it as something to consider.

I think you'll struggle to FIND new 775 boards for anything like reasonable prices, even used ones cost a lot more than they're worth these days as some people just want to extend the life of their higher-end 775 based systems and some want to keep old systems like the one you mentioned running, all adds up to a fair bit of demand for end-of-life products - similar to X58 motherboard prices being sky-high whereas CPUs are dirt cheap.

Solve : How to update my bios??

Answer»

Hello my motherboard is

Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Model F2A88X-D3H (P0)
Version To be filled by O.E.M.
Chipset Vendor AMD
Chipset Model A55/A60M FCH
Chipset Revision 00
Southbridge Vendor AMD
Southbridge Model A55/A60M
Southbridge Revision 11

I am very worried that I will screw something regarding the bios up trying to update them and
was wondering what the best way to update them would be. I heard that is recommended that I
DO NOT use the the tool given to me on the computer but rather to put the bios installer thing
on a flash drive and install it that way. If you could please point me in the right direction
on updating bios for my motherboard without messing up that would be great!let me also mention that I am updating so i can upgrade my
cpu to a AMD Athlon X4 860K
and that my current
APU is a amd a10 6800kAs far as flashing BIOS's, I just use the utility and ROM file provided from the manufacturer. I have flashed many modern boards without issues. Just make SURE you have the correct flash from the manufacturer and are not getting the flash off of a 3rd party site as for in some situations a bad BIOS flash can brick the board. 100% this, do not update the BIOS in Windows.
All you'll need to do is download the correct BIOS file from The Gigabyte website, place it on a flash drive, reboot the system with the flash drive inserted, enter the BIOS, press the key to enter Q-Flash (believe it's F8 without checking) and follow the instructions.
Most boards these days have a backup BIOS chip anyway so the risk of anything going wrong is minimal.

Download page - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4714#bios (download the latest revision obviously)
The file you need to place on the USB drive is named 2A88XD3H.F5
Direct link to Gigabyte's own instructions on using Q-Flash - http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/images/utiltiy_qflash_uefi.pdf

As mentioned in there, it's generally considered good PRACTICE to enter the BIOS after rebooting after the flash, and load optimised defaults, save and exit, then enter the BIOS again to reconfigure any settings you may need to change, but to be honest this isn't usually necessary. 100% this, do not update the BIOS in Windows.
Hi Calum. Thought I'd mention that I updated the BIOS in my HP laptop via an HP program called HP Support Assistant; it's installed on all HP laptops/notebooks, as far as I know. This worked fine. I did the same on a laptop my son owns and that update also went smoothly. I don't know whether some of the other manufacturers put such software tools on their systems. Sorry, I should have been clearer, I was only addressing the specific situation here. There are many exceptions, HP often only provide a way to update the BIOS in Windows. Most motherboard manufacturers however do provide several methods, usually one through an application in Windows and one accessed from the BIOS or a key pressed during the POST sequence, and in this case I would always recommend to update it using the former method rather than the latter. If they provide a method to create a bootable disk, that's usually fine too. We exclusively run HP machines at work and they're a mixture in terms of BIOS updates - most can only be updated from within Windows, some let you create a bootable disk, and one or two have a section in the BIOS to load an update file from a disk.
I'm not saying updating from within Windows is guaranteed to go wrong, just that it's an additional risk which I would advise anyone to avoid where possible. I've only had a few BIOS updates go wrong, out of probably thousands. Some were because we had a power issue as I was performing a flash on several machines but they all recovered from the backup BIOS. One was on an EVGA board and was down to their bootable flash utility being complete garbage, thankfully that board has three BIOS chips so that wasn't an issue. The others have also been down to exceptional circumstances. On the other HAND the number of issues I've dealt with from customers flashing their BIOS within Windows is significantly higher.Interesting! Thanks. +1 Quote from: Calum on December 27, 2014, 10:14:06 AM

My new HP Stream 7 has a backup BIOS. On one cold boot, it did a BIOS recovery & reinstalled an earlier BIOS from what was installed at the factory.
i.e. Shipped with F.07, recovered with F.06, reinstalled F.07, updated to F.0A; all within a 2 day period.
I should also clarify that the updates I referred to were not at my current place of employment, so were not HP machines - I evidently disconnected my brain while posting, sorry for the confusion.

Many HP machines do have a backup BIOS which is pretty useful, although in addition to your post about the machine recovering from that for no apparent reason I've had a few Probook 450S die out of the blue with error codes indicating a bad BIOS. No amount of HP's suggested recovery methods using various key combinations or BIOS files/utilities on bootable flash drives brought them back to life so I assume either both BIOS chips died or the board did, unusual that I've had a few do this as it doesn't seem to be a common issue. Uneconomical to repair and not in warranty so they got stripped for spares.

Solve : Wifi, USB and sound card disabled?

Answer»

Hi all. About a week ago my laptop, HP DV6 6024TX, started playing up. Windows cannot find the Wifi, ethernet, USB or sound card. They appear in device manager but that tells me the it can't INSTALL the device driver. It is missing or corrupt. When I TRY using the "add new hardware" wizard it just sits there doing nothing.

I have tried running AVG and Avast virus killers, Malwarebytes, Ccleaner and a few other programs. They found a few adware and Trojans and cleaned them.

I thought it might have been a hardware issue but I tried the HDD in another laptop and that had the same problem.

Can some one please give me an idea of where to GO next. You said that you tried that hard drive in another laptop and the same problem appeared? Are there any yellow warning icons in Device manager? Thanks for your reply Dave.

Yes. ALL network devices, Wifi devices, USB devices and sound devices have the yellow triangle.I'm going to move this topic to the Hardware FORUM where someone there will be better able to help you.Travel to the HP site...enter your product info and the Win version and your drivers will be listed...

Re-install any that have the Yellow !!'s...Hi patio,

I did as you suggested on another computer and copied them to CD. Tried to install all of the SPs I DOWNLOADED and it said they worked fine but the devices still have yellow triangles in device manager. Fixed.

Although this had been moved to the hardware section it turned out to be a software problem. I had given up trying to re install drivers for the millionth time and had a look at what had changed recently. I remembered that I had installed two AVR IDE programs and one of them required libUSB_win32.dll or something like that. I removed all three progs and bingo, it came back to life. I don't know which one installed the 32 bit dll but it should have been smart enough to know I had a 64 bit OS.

But all fixed and I am now happy again.Good News indeed...

Solve : Desktop blackouts multiple times a day.?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I came here to ask you for some help. First of all, I would like to state that I am from Czech Republic and I have already made few topics on different forums in our country with the problem that I am facing and yet, there is no solution for it.

Let's GET started. Here is my build.

Code: [Select]OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 930 2.80GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 5
Processor Count: 8
RAM: 6135 Mb
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series, -1 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 953866 MB, Free - 707425 MB;
Motherboard: MSI, MSI X58 Pro-E (MS-7522)
Antivirus: None
I just made a clean install of Windows to get rid of everything and to start from scratch. Because I just bought that Radeon R9 recently.

Now, what is my problem. As I said, I just bought that R9 recently, mounted it, installed drivers and everything was just about fine. For like a week maybe. Then my desktop began to give me BSODs randomly. But it also denied to save the minidump or memory of the BSOD for me. But I managed to catch the code of the BSOD which is:

Code: [Select]0xA0000001
0x00000005
0x00000000
0x00000000
0x00000000
After few days the BSODding was gone. But instead of BSODding, my desktop is now giving me blackouts. I thought that its the PSU, but guys on few forums told me that it is not (?). I got 800W PSU.
I am just sitting here all nervous already, because I really have no idea what to do now. Already updated the BIOS to the newest version, but still getting blackouts.

Recapitulation
- I am not getting the BSOD anymore.
- I am getting Blackouts instead.
- The PC just shuts itselfd down instantly without warning and after like 1-3 seconds it turns itself back on.
- BIOS is updated to newest version.
- Drivers are updated to newest versions aswell.

Here is report from HW Monitor while using HeavyLoad - This report is from the time before installation of clean Windows.

I just hope that I will get some more information and mainly help than on the other forums, where people just left my topic inactive, probably 'cause of the problem itself. Well, thanks in advance for any response and help.
Have you tried running the system without the R9 video card that was recently introduced to see if it behaves on its own without this video card. If you had a prior video card in this system that was healthy then install that back to this computer otherwise run on integrated video if that is available.

If the problem remains then we know its not video card related. If it goes away then its either video card or power supply.Bad card...or flakey PSU...what Brand/Model is the PSU ? ?
FSP Group Everest 85Plus 800.

Yeah. I just tried updating BIOS, updating driver for the graphics card and I have also replaced the thermal paste on the heat sink.
And yes, I will try to install back my old card. But, if it won't crash, then it still may be the PSU? Since I was looking at some other forums and websites and found something about the R9 card. That it sometimes may take a little bit more than it usually does. I mean power. For like a milisecond and that may then cause the "overload" of PSU? But to be honest, the 800W must be enough, isn't it? I also replaced the PSU cable for a new one. Another thing what I will try out is to plug the PC into some other elect. socket in our house or maybe in a friend's house. But I'll try out replacing the card with the old one first. I'll let you know as soon as POSSIBLE. Gonna get some sleep now. Thank you for the response.Alright. Replaced the graphics card for the old one and everything is just about fine so far. No crashes yet. Played few games, still everything good.
But the question is - is it the new graphics card or the PSU? My old graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, which is 6-pin, while the R9 is 6 + 8 pin. I have no way to try out another PSU. Noone in my location got 800W PSU or higher. So, is there any other way to test it out? I got here only old 390W PSU.Thats a good logical list of things to check next...bravo.

Let us know how it goes... Quote from: patio on January 18, 2015, 06:58:03 AM

Can't tell if you are being sarcastic or you mean it. Anyways, I'll probably try out to manually test the PSU with a multimeter, according to a tutorial on some other site. It was sincere.... Googled the R9 200 series and came back with lots of complaints about crashing computers , I would say look in that direction .HI

Did you add the 8 pin cable to your power supply and to the card. It will be unreliable with only the 6 pin cable as that is only 20 amps. On your supply there is 4 12v outputs which are all separate rails. So you need the 8 pin lead as well as the 6 pin for another 12v 25 amps to run the new card.

Solve : Getting more keys via a mini USB keyboard??

Answer»

(Gotta get ALL of the keys)

So I need to find a way to get a spare few keys for extra keybinds. Now, this is meant for my laptop and I figure the easiest way would be to just a USB based mini keypad sort of thing. Like this basically:

http://www.amazon.com/Cubeternet-Portable-Numeric-KeyPad-Keyboard/dp/B002XNJGRA

Something I can set up so when I need the extra keys, it's a small hand-move away. But now here's my concern. My laptop already has a numeric keypad BUILT in that I use. If I were to buy one of these and set them up, would the USB keypad and the built in one occupy the same set of keys? If I hit numpad 1 on my built in keypad and numpad 1 on the USB one, will they both be the same thing. What if built-in numpad 1 automatically enters a text string in for me, will the USB version do the same thing?

I need to find a solution for extra keys that I can configure using autohotkey so that they are different. I'm aware this isn't the autohotkey forums, so I was wondering more of the technical side while I research autohotkey abilities. For General Reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AutoHotkey

Programs like Autopilot key do not identify exasperate keyboards. Windows merges the two keyboards.
How many keys to you need?
I use a commercial program the is different from Auto Hot key
I use one keyboard and can have over two hundred different macros. I do that by moving up to two and three stroke hot keys.
Example: I hit control 1 and a MENU of 26 ITEMS pops up. I select a macro with letter. But if I hit control 2 I get a different set.
For single stroke macros, there are a number of choices. Using control with a F key gives you about 10 items.

As you your question, No, programs like Auto Hot key lets Windows handle dual keyboards. Unless you wish to write a low-level drive that has to be written for that keyboard.
AutoHotKey is Open Source. So you could try to modify it.

How can you run out of hotkeys and want to add a supplemental keyboard ? ?...which BTW won't work because it will just replace your current NumPad...Geek - Interesting. I might have to just try to find set ups with modifiers and try to get as many keys as I can.

Patio - On top of the games fundamental keys that I need, I need around 6-8 for teamspeak and another ~20 for additional ability binds. Most of which have to be easy to access as I'll have to be quick to hit some of them usually.

That's why I was looking into an external solution because having something like that pad set up, I could take my hand of my mouse for a second to hit an important key and bring my hand back quickly.

I'll just have to set up a SPREADSHEET with my keys and prioritize the important ones and set up a system with modifiers.
