Solve : USB stopped working? |
Answer» I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook running Windows Vista Home Basic. For some reason a few weeks ago 2 out of my 4 USB port just stopped working. I tried to reinstall the drivers but as soon as I would delete them they would reinstall almost instantly. I also tried running the restore disk and that didn't help the problem either. Is there anything I can do without taking it to a shop? (can't afford to take it in right now) I suggest you do as sometimes recommended by CH forum senior member, patio. He says to open Device Manager and uinstall all USB items and then restart your computer and let Windows reinstall USB drivers. I tried that but the drivers re-installed themselves almost instantly, I didn't have a CHANCE to reboot. What exactly did you do with the restore disk? Did you format the hard drive and reinstall your OS? Quote from: soybean on May 23, 2007, 09:41:16 AM What exactly did you do with the restore disk? Did you format the hard drive and reinstall your OS? Actullaly, I just sent it out to Toshiba for repair, i found out that it was a hardware ISSUE. Solve : Diagnostic Flowcharts-really setup nice for most problems? |
Answer» This is one of the best online flow charts I have ever seen. I require a magnifying glass to read it though Better get good glasses or change the RESOLUTION to a reasonable size But really is it coming up small for you guys? I use Firefox and my resolution is 1024x768 on a 19 and it is quite large on my screen. Just curious. It looks fine to me, on my 17 inch monitor set at 1024 X 768 resolution. By the way, I came across that site earlier this morning via a Google SEARCH. Solve : Help with troubleshooting my Pci adapter? |
Answer» So I broke the PLASTIC part that gets the signal on my ENLWI-1XN42 n150 wireless adapter, i just bemed into it WRONG and it broke. I have another ONE and I put it on there but now my computer isn't even registering that I have a wireless adapter. I didn't hit hard it really was just the platic PIECE that I hit got a bad contact with and it put a little to much pressure so it broke on the hinge. But I don't know what to do to troubleshoot it.Replace it...not worth trying to fix...Try taking the card out the slot and putting it back in, it's possible that you've just knocked it loose. That card is approx $20 BUCKS U.S....Yea I just took it out and then reinstalled the drivers works againGood to hear...i guess i jumped the gun for nothing. |

Solve : Mini Keyboards, Any suggestions?? |
Answer» Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing awesome. I like it and is great when USING the phone as a movie player with the HDMI cable plugged in which is at the TV so you can use the like a remote/mouse/keyboard.Keyboard Remote Control - Amazon.com It seems that many people like that particular device in spite of the low price. It may be this is a case when price and quality do not go together. I used to have one of those small mini ones, it worked but it was a bit fiddly to use. I can highly recommend the Logitech K400 keyboards (I have two of them), they are of course larger (Same size as a typical laptop keyboard with a touchpad on the side) however they are extremely usable since you can properly type two handed on it. For the cheap ones on Amazon your only real option are to read the user reviews - They are usually generic devices with very little in the ways of professional reviews. |

Solve : My processor speed: 1.09 or 1.8 GHz?? |
Answer» My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ that is supposed to run at 1.8 GHz. I looked at my system properties and it said that my CPU speed was 1.09 GHz. Why is this? Is my processor not running as fast as it should be? I play PC games, and the game I play most OFTEN requires a processor that is at least 1.7 GHz. Is this why the game is so choppy? How do I fix this? This is the one billionth time this post has been made Overclocking means increasing the voltage. Solve : Computer locks up/turns itself on after being shut off? |
Answer» Hi, Are you familiar with the CMOS battery? It may well be holding some power but, weak. No, I'm not... but go on.Read the below site.Cost is about 3-7 US dollars. http://www.liverepair.com/encyclopedia/articles/cmosreplace.aspI got it to start today and it just doesn't keep track of the correct date, it was a day behind in time. Could I attribute this to another problem or is it still a CMOS battery problem. That's usually an indication the CMOS battery is weak or dead. Remember when working inside the case to remove all power SOURCES and take anti static precautions... Nice pic Patio Alan <>< There's a ponytail behind it you can't see... Thanks for all the help, I'll try that. The new CMOS Battery should solve your problem. |

Solve : Laptop SSD not loading windows 8 properly? |
Answer» Hey Guys, I have learned a lot from you kind people in the past and I am now hoping to learn more / solve yet anotherissue. So here it goes: In an industry-standard benchmark test of read and write speeds, the Samsung SSD–based Latitude E6430 demonstrated 6.65 times better disk performance than the HDD-based Latitude. Such a dramatic performance gain means that end users may notice their laptops responding significantly faster, enabling them to work more efficiently than before.I think, but not sure, some changes have to be made in BIOS. Sorry I don't have that information. Perhaps others know more. There are videos on You Tube that claim it is easy to put SSD on a ell laptop. In BIOS I'd make sure that FAST BOOT option is set. In BIOS I'd make sure that S.M.A.R.T is shut off since sometimes this can cause issues with SSD's where the system is looking for HDD. In Windows when it finally boots, i would look at the event logs to see what it shows for warnings or errors. It might not state anything here since it sounds like its hanging before windows even loads, but maybe Windows can detect and point out an issue with the SSD etc.Where was this Win 8.1 from ? ?Thanks again for all of your replies To answer you guys: Windows 8.1 was OBTAINED from: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media and booted from USB Also, I enabled Fast Boot in the BIOS, but I cannot locate S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS. Although I am not familiar with it, here are 5 screenshots of the first 5 errors in my event log: http://imgur.com/a/2Oku1 If you have any USB drives attached, disconnect them. Your boot order is still looking for them first. |

Solve : 486 Board Compatibility? |
Answer» Are 486 boards compatibile with all 486 processors? No. There is none. HiThank you Lisa for that info I'm building an AT DOS 486DX2/66 gaming machine and in info/parts gathering mode I do have another question. I would like to have between 128k and 256k of L2 cache on the motherboard. If I cant find one that has it, is it possible to add that to the motherboard? I assume the way to check L2 cache on the motherboard is in the bios, right? Some of the later model 486 boards had a Cache slot available to add a Cache module. This did not become popular though until the Pentium's came out with the newer socket. Here is a motherboard that I do not suggest buying because its not universal and lacking PCI slots etc, but has a 256k Cache module. They are out there, you just need to find one that matches all specs you have. This is an already working board with CPU, Cache, and RAM. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-09-00144-01-486-DX2-66MHz-16MB-RAM-Baby-AT-Motherboard-w-VLB-Slots-/311190503432?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4874664008 For how cheap a 486 motherboard is with processor and RAM included, you might as well go with a known good combination VS buying a motherboard without a CPU already stuffed into it. If a board is being sold without the CPU, then someone has PRIED the CPU out of it. If they claim its a working board but no CPU included then they still pried the CPU out of it. I'd avoid buying a bare used board that doesnt come with a CPU already in it. Some other things to consider when buying a motherboard of the 486 era: Do you want a motherboard that has the Socket 3 which is press fit CPU into socket or the more modern eject lever? Do you need any PCI slots or just ISA 8 and 16 bit slots? Do you need PS2 ports for Mouse/Keyboard or are you going to go with a larger AT keyboard and a 9-pin serial mouse? Are you looking for a universal AT type board or a specialty board for the case you are using? Do you require any VESA slots? Most 486 era motherboard CMOS batteries are BAD and most are leaking or have already leaked onto the motherboard, are you prepared to have to replace this battery without killing the main board? (* Years ago I had to fix a board that the acid leaked out of the battery and ate the traces off of the top of the board through the mask, and instead of placing the same battery back into it, i had a 2 x AA Radio Shack battery cradle and so I wired that up for my 3 volts to hold the system time and BIOS config info. ) Do you have an older power supply with the P8 and P9 connectors to it? ---------------------------------------------------------------- Lastly you might find it cheaper to buy a whole computer already assembled and working vs assembling a 486 system piece by piece!!!No pci slots needed, I don't think they exist on 486 boards, at least not on the dozens of them I've seen in the past. I didn't know they pressed those processors into the boards back then, thx for that info. Basicly I'm looking for an AT form factor Socket 3 motherboard, 256k L2 cache on board, 486DX2/66 processor, 2-3 VLB slots and 4 or more 16bit ISA slots. I've got a Buslogic SCSI card that will fit into a VLB slot (which is about equal in speed to pci) which will take larger hard drives than the IDE with room to connect 7 devices. I can get a PS2 adapter for the keyboard but will probably have to use a serial mouse (both available online). I'm getting a new big AT case on Amazon. I plan on replacing the CMOS battery with an external one that plugs into the motherboard. I've NEVER done one of these old boards before. This board has more connection options http://www.ebay.com/itm/131376307288?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It also has a lockdown lever for the processor (which I already have). Only thing is it doesn't have regular P8, P9 power connections. hmmm I know it's going to cost more this way but half of the fun for me is building and customizing. 486 systems were typically PCI/ISA about halfway through their lifespan. In particular 486 boards that supported a Pentium overdrive pretty much always had PCI/ISA. I've never seen an ISA only 486 board myself- usually it is either PCI/ISA or VL-Bus/ISA. the 486 CPUs used Socket 3 (as you've mentioned), which was Zero-Insertion Force. Cheaper motherboards didn't use the standard Socket 3 and instead used a modified version which was Low-Insertion Force. I've never seen them myself, though. Typically removing a CPU was as one would expect- you lift a lever and remove the CPU. Sometimes it was a plastic tab or small metal rod that you pulled SIDEWAYS, and personally my sample size is only one, but the 486 system I had previously used a ZIF socket and there was no requirement to "pry" out the CPU. I've never seen a header for an external CMOS battery, though I haven't looked for them. Every board I've had aside from a 286 which used a cigar-*censored* battery used a CR2032. This board linked here had the socket that required a special CPU removal tool that grabbed at the corners of the 486 or as i had to do back in the day.... carefully pry up each corner evenly with a small flat head screw driver until the CPU could be removed trying to avoid damaging pins, and then push the replacement CPU into the socket. The socket next to the CPU on this board was either a 487 math co-processor or overdrive socket. And the socket that the 486 is stuffed into is the same socket type on this board. It may be low insertion force, but most were pried up to get them out at their corners. I've been working on computers going back to the 1980s with 8086, 8088, 286, 386, and lots of 486's in the early 90s with the SX ( = s u c k s ) processor in which I was quite busy upgrading people, mostly gamers, to the DX processor for both the 386 and 486 systems. Many of the CPUs had to be pried up carefully at their corners although the 8086 and 8088's I never had to remove as for there was no drastic upgrade back then other than finding an 8087 if you could afford one and needed that complexity of math computed. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gateway-09-00144-01-486-DX2-66MHz-16MB-RAM-Baby-AT-Motherboard-w-VLB-Slots-/311190503432?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4874664008That is for a pre-built OEM system, and I think it might be an earlier one, so it may also be a case of manufacturer's at the time adjusting to the newer, standardized ZIF sockets (as opposed to the 386 and earlier where you had surface mount and basically any mounting socket the manufacturer wanted). I believe the one I had, personally, was a later VIA motherboard, and it had on-board sound (if my memory serves- a, ESS audio drive). Mine was a very late model as I understand since it was a 120-Mhz DX4, enough to require a CPU Fan. I'm not sure what the upgrade CHIP could be. It's not a Overdrive slot since the overdrive had ~235 Pins, and that has 169. It might be that the motherboard was for a 486SX and thus supported a 487 (which would otherwise be built into a DX). Or perhaps a proprietary upgrade slot. |

Solve : Problem in DVD burning? |
Answer» I have recently bought BENQ DW1800 DVD writer. When I try to BURN any data in DVD disc using nero, it burns but give some error msg"error:cant write disc at once". When I INSERT that dvd disc again in DVD writer, it(dvd writer) unable to read the data in the Disc. When I try to write more data in disc, a error msg appears "not able to write data in an open disc". I could not write any DVD successfully since I have bought it. I have wasted 4-5 discs because of this error. Is the problem with DVD writer or DVD disc or Nero? Not Nero, because many people use that successfully. Is it a newer version? Not Nero, because many people use that successfully. Is it a newer version? There is no problem in burning CDs, the problem is with DVD Discs. DVD is DVD-R type and the brand of DVD Discs is writex. http://www.writex.net/ I burn at Nero's auto defined speed. I dont define its speed myself. The Writex site only lists CDR's. Apparently Writex does produce a dvd -r blank disk. It would be interesting to hear from the OP , which version of Nero is being used . The fact that they say it burns and cant be read is odd. thakurlokesh .......... Quote from: patio on May 20, 2007, 04:44:27 PM Try a different brand of blank media...certain burners only like certain brands. OK, I will try other good brand like sony.Whenever i buy a new burner i borrow, buy a blank media from everyone i know COVERING all the name brands and some generics....about 15 to 20 in alll. I then do a test burn of a mixed media folder i saved for this purpose. It includes music, video, data and a few small apps and Zip files. This lets me know which media to buy for that burner. Sometimes even the brands the manuf. suggest have problems. This way i know for sure. Nothing worse than a spindle of 100 blanks that are worthless in your burner... |

Solve : toasted mobo?? |
Answer» Ok, here is my situation..... trapper eMachines are notorious for poor power supplies that frequently take out other components when they fail. I hope this did not happen with you, but your first step would be to install a known working power supply of at least 300 watts and see if the MACHINE POWERS up. If you decide to buy a new power supply, don't get one of those $10.99 "el cheapos" or you will be back here soon posting other problems. lol, if that was the case, i was planning to buy a solid 500w PS that i could reuse in a different build if it turns out that this thing is truly fried. Thanks for the advice [email protected]Make sure you have appropriate connectors for the old and the new boards. Solid for me=Antec, but others are good also. You can often judge quality by the price and the weight. More is generally better, but use a quality brand nonetheless. |

A 7900 class or 8 series card such as the 8600GTS would give much better video performance. A faster CPU would help, but not so much in games. More RAM would aid multitasking and make games load faster, 2Gb is a good sweet spot if you have cash left over, if not then it's easy and fairly cheap to upgrade. That gives you a good starting point, what else do you need help with?Try a build-your-own. 1 Grand will get you an entry level Core 2 Duo build, using an asus p5b vanilla and 2 gigs of ram. Will have a proper test shortly...I knew that the P180 case had magnificent cooling, but i didnt think it would be that great. What sort of case temps do you get?On full load the case temp never really passes 32/34, when ambient room temp is at around 21... thats with all case fans on their lowest settings.... Having the PSU completely seperated from the cpu seems to play a major part...just a question, do the heatsink fans feel warm to the touch under load? Don't electrocute urself, and make sure your grounded, but if they are relatively cool then Intel has finally made a chip that can compete to AMDs in temp as well as performance. |

Solve : BenchMark Score low?? |
Answer» I have just purchased a Gigabyte Geforce G1 Gaming graphics card and have done a benchMark test using FurMark. I have the resolution on FurMark set to 1024x576 and I'm getting a BenchMark of 3602. I then do the same test with my 970 overclocked more and then get a BenchMark that's actually lower 3601? Can someone tell me why I'm not getting a benchmark over 4000 plus like many other people get using this card? Thanks! |

Solve : Flashing blue light on wireless modem? |
Answer» The D-Link DSL-2730B WIRELESS + MODEM ROUTER attached to this Windows 7 desk top PC has been operating successfully for years. However, on TWO occasions recently I have noticed that flashing of a blue light on the side of the modem has started up. The modem still operates normally. I have not been able to find out in the documentation I have or on a D-Link forum what it is indicating. Your Manual... Your Manual...Fix hyperlink. ftp's get modified to http by SMF.The flashing blue light can be turned off by pressing on the window in the side of the modem. I still do not know what it indicates but it has not caused any problems in the computers connected to the modem by cable or wireless. The "Your Manual.." link provided did not work for the reason that Computer_Commando gave.FTP Link: ftp://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-2730B/Manuals/DSL-2730B_T1_Manual_v1.01%28AU%29.pdf Copy line above and paste in the browser. EDIT: It is a green light. On the side. It signals a WPS is going on.It is a blue light and flashing when it occurs. It can be turned off by pressing the window. The WPS has been operating satisfactorily for years without the light flashing. I looked at the manual and did not find an blue light. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve SPACE]Could be like my DIR-625, The undocumented button on the right side, near the front is a WDS or Wireless Distribution System button. Also known as the WPS button. When flashing during firmware updating, mine is blue, too.The button which is blinking blue is the WPS button. It will be blinking to show that WPS negotiation is ENABLED, waiting for the clients. This will blink for about 2mins then go off. If that is not happening for you, I can think of 2 things to do: 1. Disable WPS via the web configuration page. To do that, go to Advanced > Wireless settings > Security settings . Then under WPS setup, select disable from the drop down. Don't forget to click on save at the bottom of that page. 2. Reinstall the latest firmware (only if you know what you are doing). |

Solve : What are the slots next to the slots for RAM on my Intel motherboard?? |
Answer» HI, Just wondering about what looks like the 3rd and 4th slots for RAM on my Intel 850 motherboard... I just updated my RAM and, when I saw those extra slots, thought 'Why don't I put the old 512MB RAM in them? That way I'd have 3GB total?' The RAM pretty much fits, it just doesn't close on one side (those clip things). However, either that is not good enough or the slots aren't for RAM as the computer doesn't say it has them when I boot it up. It says I have 2GB rather than 3 and, when I put the new RAM in the slots before (because I am lazy!) it said there was only 1GB of RAM rather than 3. Can anyone tell me what these slots are or why I am having TROUBLE GETTING the RAM correctly into them? Thanks, jamesWhat is the full model number of that BOARD? What kind of processor?See GX1_Man, pictures could come in handy In reply to your question about the board model, it is an: S478 Intel 865PE ATX A L R the processor being: P4 2.8 512Kb S478 BOX 800FSB those details according to my invoice from dabs. Thanks for reading thus far and hopeful that you can help explain what these slots additional are! jamesJames, I don't mean to be an *censored*; but how about reading the manual? They don't provide you with a piece of a tree for nothing, you know. |

Solve : Motherboard screws? |
Answer» Hello, I thought those little dots around the screw holes might be related to grounding. They are for grounding. The board has a ground plane that is joined to the chassis ground via the mounting screws. If you used plastic screws you could run into a floating ground issue. I'd advise using metal screws that have a cap/head that do not exceed the circled area of mounting. Some screws that may be perfect thread size and length may have an unusually larger cap/head to them which can make contact with component leads or traces near by and cause problems. as long as the screw top does not make contact with component legs and you dont see any traces running under them that the mask gound become damaged and short to ground, you should be all set. In the motherboard mounting hole picture that Salmon provided you see a white circle around the mounting hole, as long as the screw top ( cap/head ) doesnt overhang out of this circled area then your good to go. *Also do not over tighten the screws as for you can crack the PCB material damaging the board. |

Solve : Computer reboots while gaming? |
Answer» Hi guys i really need your help. I dunno why and how my computer reboots without any error message while playing games. I thought it maybe my PSU prob and i bought a new 500W PSU but still got the same PROBLEM. Maybe a corrupt OS (windows 7- ultimate 64bit) and YEAH my Gpu goes 94 degree+ and has gone over 104 while gaming but when i start my pc its temp is aroung 64*C which again i guess isn't normal. Amd Fx-8350 processor Nvidia Geforce210 HyperX 8gb ram windows 7 -ultimate 64bit Your GPU temperature definitely isn't normal for that card, does it have a FAN and if so is it working? I suspect it's either badly clogged with dust or that the heatsink isn't attached properly, those temperatures could certainly be causing this issue. That aside, what make and MODEL of PSU did you buy? Bad PSUs are also a COMMON cause of random reboots.Nice choice on the italics... |

Solve : Z87 Motherboard Won't Enter Bios? |
Answer» Hello! My motherboard has been acting weird every since I bought in in May, but it has finally gotten to the point where it looks like it may be completely useless. I want to try as much as possible to figure out the problem, or I will be forced to send it in for a replacement with the lifetime warranty. Admist trying to solve this, less than two weeks ago I was removing and then putting everything back in when I broke the original CPU cooler. Curious as to how this got broken? Was the board dropped, crushed, or something pried against the cooler that broke it?The original CPU cooler had these plastic screws in each corner, and I just twisted them with enough force to break it. Because of that, the cooler couldn't make full contact and thus started overheating. I was eventually going to upgrade it anyway, so it's not so bad. My current cooler doesn't use those plastic screw things, thank gosh.Ok... I would actually take advantage of the 2 year warranty that this motherboard has then. MSI boards are known to be hit and miss as far as good and bad boards. http://us.msi.com/page/warranty/ For RMA replacement I would state to them that it has the A2 error and its non functional, and resetting CMOS doesnt help. You will need to carefully remove your CPU, RAM, CPU cooler setup, and other addon cards and send them the bare board back. Its usually a 1 for 1 where they will send you a replacement board as SOON as they receive yours. In some situations they may be able to send you the replacement board before you send yours back although through this process they would probably secure the replacement board via credit card or payment and then give you a refund when the dead board is received. The last motherboard I had to send back to manufacturer was not a MSI, but was a Foxconn and it took 2.5 weeks to get a replacement board. They offered an ability to get a replacement over night but I would have to pay for overnight shipping as well as I could secure the replacement board with credit card until they receive the DOA board. Overnight shipping was going to be $119 for a $55 motherboard and so I declined this offer for sooner. |

Solve : problem connecting second monitor to graphics card? |
Answer» hi! You can't use the VGA on the mobo if you have this card. This has already been answered. I'm using it atm and have no problems besides I can't use nVidia control panel for settings. I'm playing CS:GO with my main and Chrome is open on second monitor. On chat people got frustrated by my noobiness and I thought it was because I just wasn't clear enough. I honestly don't know how to say this any clearer. DaveLembke already told me this setup doesn't damage anything and advised me to plug both monitors to my old gtx580. Btw gtx980 didn't come with adapter. It came with gtx580 or radeon 5870. I don't remember. You don't listen...and you have been given excellent advice... If it does not work it's on your end. Quote from: patio on December 28, 2014, 05:46:14 PM You don't listen...and you have been given excellent advice... He has made it QUITE clear, or so I would have thought, that it is working perfectly fine. He wants to know of the equipment he has might provide him with a better option. With regards to the adapters: the Video Card needs to be outputting an analog signal in order for the adapter to work. Looking into it in this case one of the ports does in fact carry a Analog signal. I cannot find any reference that shows which of the two connectors does so, but what I was able to find certainly indicates that only one of them does. I did however find numerous parts lists for the card packaging that state it comes with a VGA adapter. Quote This has been basically solved already. All i need to know now is does connecting both monitors on gtx580 limit vram to 1.5g.If you connect both monitors to one card, you are only using that card, so yes. if in this case you had the 980 installed as well it would be doing nothing, unfortunately. Quote This has already been answered. I'm using it atm and have no problems besides I can't use nVidia control panel for settings. I'm playing CS:GO with my main and Chrome is open on second monitor. Not really a problem, IMO. Only one monitor is being driven by a Nvidia card. The other is using your on-board Intel GPU, so each one has the options for the actual card behind it. What you mentioned about pulling too much power is untrue. (Monitors don't pull power through their display connectors- they pull it from a wall outlet). I think you ought to explain further what happens when you try to use both. You mention REPEATEDLY "first monitor", "second monitor" "primary" "secondary" etc. and how the main monitor goes into standby but I don't think you mention which inputs each one uses. It does work as is as you've shown but presumably your goal is to have both monitors driven by the 980. -If you plug the DVI monitor (the Acer) into the top connector by itself, does that work? -If you plug the VGA connector into the bottom connector and reboot, does that work? If not, what happens? -Can you swap the connectors? If so, does that work? Hi BC_Programmer. Weird thing happened. I tried one more time and plugged both monitors in video card and Acer stayed stand by, just like all the times before. Benq turned on with 1600x1200 resolution which is weird because its 1920x1080 monitor. All the icons that were round before, like Steam or Chrome were flattened a bit, earth shape. 1920x1980 wasn't even in the list to choose for when I right-clicked desktop and selected resolution settings. There were no nVidia control panel on list when i right-clicked desktop. So I downloaded and installed nVidia driver again and rebooted. Now everything is perfect. I have no idea what happened because i have done this same thing more than 5 times before, every time when geForce Experience found a new update for nVidia cards. You and DaveLembke were pretty much the only ones that understood my broken english or what was going on so thx both and of course everyone else that tried to help. I will mark this as Solved for now and get back later if I somehow brake this again or if this was just a luck. Im happy camper again, in de_dust2.. |

Solve : noob help please? |
Answer» im building my first gaming pc. i have picked out all my parts and have done a lot of research. here is my list and my questions. my original plan was for 2 corsair 8gb ram sticks. but i want as least amount of stress on the parts as posible. thats why i was thinking 4x 4gb ram sticks which would still be a total of 16gb of ram. That doesn't make any sense. 4x4GB doesn't "reduce stress" compared to 2x8GB.like i SAID im a noob at this. thats why im asking for help. im not looking to be criticized or belittled. i just wanna be lead in the right direction. and i need plain and clear answers. im speding over 2k on this build, and wanna make sure its done right. thats why i say any help or advice is appreciated. here is the link to my pcpartspicker account with all my selected parts. please look it over, and let me know what yall think. thank you http://pcpartpicker.com/user/pcgamingnoob89/saved/wJcNnQThat LOOKS fine apart from the PSU, the CSM series aren't great. You would be better off with something like an XFX XTR or EVGA G2. 750w is fine though.thank you. according to pcpartspicker.com im pulling 506w which i think is at an idle. correct me if im wrong. they say that the sapphire radeon 8gb graphics card can pull up to 434w by its self under full load. but i will never put it under full load with the games ill be playing. and i read that the PSU's run best between 50-80% load. i have to go by what i read and watch. i have no personal experience. i will look into the other PSU's you suggested.Yeah, you could even get away with 650w if you needed to. Also don't pay more for the 8gb 290x, a 4gb one is more than sufficient. |

Solve : Strange silkscreen notation near RAM Internal & External Graphics? |
Answer» Friend of mine lost his motherboard and was looking for a cheap REPLACEMENT. Looking at newegg I found this board that I am not going to suggest to him because its only DDR and only 1.5 SATA, surprisingly very out of date board, but looking around on the board this caught my EYE near the RAM slots. Found this in the instruction manual, not sure why it is printed on the board though: Because Asrock. Dave, you could also look into solutions like the Gigabyte Brix and similar machines - tiny, power efficient PCs using Atom equivalent CPUs which would provide adequate performance (ALONG with 4GB of RAM and an SSD) for the average user. I don't know about the US but over here they're about £80, plus say £25 for RAM and then a small SSD makes them an attractive alternative to rebuilding older machines if there's no huge performance requirement. That may well not be appropriate in this case but thought I'd suggest it as something to consider. I think you'll struggle to FIND new 775 boards for anything like reasonable prices, even used ones cost a lot more than they're worth these days as some people just want to extend the life of their higher-end 775 based systems and some want to keep old systems like the one you mentioned running, all adds up to a fair bit of demand for end-of-life products - similar to X58 motherboard prices being sky-high whereas CPUs are dirt cheap. |

Solve : How to update my bios?? |
Answer» Hello my motherboard is I heard that is recommended that I 100% this, do not update the BIOS in Windows. All you'll need to do is download the correct BIOS file from The Gigabyte website, place it on a flash drive, reboot the system with the flash drive inserted, enter the BIOS, press the key to enter Q-Flash (believe it's F8 without checking) and follow the instructions. Most boards these days have a backup BIOS chip anyway so the risk of anything going wrong is minimal. Download page - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4714#bios (download the latest revision obviously) The file you need to place on the USB drive is named 2A88XD3H.F5 Direct link to Gigabyte's own instructions on using Q-Flash - http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/images/utiltiy_qflash_uefi.pdf As mentioned in there, it's generally considered good PRACTICE to enter the BIOS after rebooting after the flash, and load optimised defaults, save and exit, then enter the BIOS again to reconfigure any settings you may need to change, but to be honest this isn't usually necessary. Quote from: Calum on December 27, 2014, 09:30:09 AM 100% this, do not update the BIOS in Windows.Hi Calum. Thought I'd mention that I updated the BIOS in my HP laptop via an HP program called HP Support Assistant; it's installed on all HP laptops/notebooks, as far as I know. This worked fine. I did the same on a laptop my son owns and that update also went smoothly. I don't know whether some of the other manufacturers put such software tools on their systems. Sorry, I should have been clearer, I was only addressing the specific situation here. There are many exceptions, HP often only provide a way to update the BIOS in Windows. Most motherboard manufacturers however do provide several methods, usually one through an application in Windows and one accessed from the BIOS or a key pressed during the POST sequence, and in this case I would always recommend to update it using the former method rather than the latter. If they provide a method to create a bootable disk, that's usually fine too. We exclusively run HP machines at work and they're a mixture in terms of BIOS updates - most can only be updated from within Windows, some let you create a bootable disk, and one or two have a section in the BIOS to load an update file from a disk. I'm not saying updating from within Windows is guaranteed to go wrong, just that it's an additional risk which I would advise anyone to avoid where possible. I've only had a few BIOS updates go wrong, out of probably thousands. Some were because we had a power issue as I was performing a flash on several machines but they all recovered from the backup BIOS. One was on an EVGA board and was down to their bootable flash utility being complete garbage, thankfully that board has three BIOS chips so that wasn't an issue. The others have also been down to exceptional circumstances. On the other HAND the number of issues I've dealt with from customers flashing their BIOS within Windows is significantly higher.Interesting! Thanks. +1 Quote from: Calum on December 27, 2014, 10:14:06 AM ...We exclusively run HP machines at work and they're a mixture in terms of BIOS updates - most can only be updated from within Windows, some let you create a bootable disk, and one or two have a section in the BIOS to load an update file from a disk....Some were because we had a power issue as I was performing a flash on several machines but they all recovered from the backup BIOS....My new HP Stream 7 has a backup BIOS. On one cold boot, it did a BIOS recovery & reinstalled an earlier BIOS from what was installed at the factory. i.e. Shipped with F.07, recovered with F.06, reinstalled F.07, updated to F.0A; all within a 2 day period. I should also clarify that the updates I referred to were not at my current place of employment, so were not HP machines - I evidently disconnected my brain while posting, sorry for the confusion. Many HP machines do have a backup BIOS which is pretty useful, although in addition to your post about the machine recovering from that for no apparent reason I've had a few Probook 450S die out of the blue with error codes indicating a bad BIOS. No amount of HP's suggested recovery methods using various key combinations or BIOS files/utilities on bootable flash drives brought them back to life so I assume either both BIOS chips died or the board did, unusual that I've had a few do this as it doesn't seem to be a common issue. Uneconomical to repair and not in warranty so they got stripped for spares. |

Solve : Desktop blackouts multiple times a day.? |

Answer» Hello everyone, Thats a good logical list of things to check next...bravo. Can't tell if you are being sarcastic or you mean it. Anyways, I'll probably try out to manually test the PSU with a multimeter, according to a tutorial on some other site. It was sincere.... Googled the R9 200 series and came back with lots of complaints about crashing computers , I would say look in that direction .HI Did you add the 8 pin cable to your power supply and to the card. It will be unreliable with only the 6 pin cable as that is only 20 amps. On your supply there is 4 12v outputs which are all separate rails. So you need the 8 pin lead as well as the 6 pin for another 12v 25 amps to run the new card. |
