Solve : Automatic backup?

Answer»

Heya there,
I am trying to find a software which can automatically back up user specified files when they are modified and save them in a specified space. In my case i have all my work in my windows pc,however its an old machine and its HDD's are going to die sooner or later.Thats why i bought a new drive where i want to have an extra copy of all of my files/pics.For example i want My documents file (along with EVERY file in it) which EXISTS on C:\ to be automatically written to D:\ and as soon as a file from this folder gets modified (Word work for example) to be written on the backup drive as well, which is more like a synced backup between those two drives. Also i have a 2,5" 80gb drive which i plug in once a month and do a backup, any chance to get this activity automatically? As said before my computer is kinda old so i am trying to find a program which isn't a complete resource hogger/bloatware!I have tried Secondy Copy which does an excellent work, however my pc is greatly delayed/freezes at random times.

Any help is greatly appreciated FOLKS!Thanks for your time Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best

Is D:\ a separate physical drive, or just a separate partition on the same physical drive as C:\?soybean
Its a separate physical drive, just in case C:/ goes bad.

Trying acronis atm, looks like a fine piece of software. Thanks mate! For those times in between BACKUPS i use and recommend SyncBack...Yes, SyncBack is an excellent synchronizer.
Another very good one is AllwaySync.
I've also heard good comments about File Hamster for making copies of files on the fly, but I'm not familiar with it. Anyone tried it?Running Acronis trial at the moment and it's my favourite so far.Rest of them are pretty nifty too.

Thanks a lot for your help guys,it really solved my hands!

Solve : CD to cassette tape?

Answer»

hello folks

i want to put some music cds on a cassette tape , are there a way to do this with my PC. i can put cassette on a cd.

sure hate to bother you fine folks so much but this old man needs a lot of help.

thanks much
harleyHello Harley,

somewhat of a novice here, but I know about audio. Without knowing any other details, I guess you could do it pretty easily with an Audigy Card. But if you could provide more details it may be easier to give you the best solution to this. Such as, which model Audigy, model of tape recorder, and maybe what method you use currently to go from tape to CD.

I will first say that there is more than one way to do this, but this would be one of the cheapest.

As long as your tape recorder has "standard" inputs on it (like RCA, which most consumer level tape decks have) and your Audigy has an 1/8 inch analog stereo minijack output (I think all audigy series do, and if so might be coded w/ green color) you can purchase a 1/8 inch stereo minijack to RCA cable. You can probably get this at a local Radio Shack or electronics store. Again, this would not be the best way, but for casual listening purposes it should suffice.

The only catch is that you'll need to think about the timing. Make sure you know the length of the tape per side, as you could be recording your favorite track from the CD and that side of the tape could end halfway through it. So you may need to also do a little math and be sure the songs for each side of the tape don't exceed the recording length of that side.

Hope this helps, and if you POST more details I may be able to help further. hello vinylite

this old goat sure does appreciate your reply. i have the standard cable with a 1/8 inch (3.5mm) plug on both ends.
i have a built in audio card (realtek AC97) and it has only line in , line out ,and MICROPHONE jack. when i record tapes to my computer for cds i plug one end to the headphone jack on the tape player in my karaoke machine(memorex MKS8503) and the other end to the microphone jack on my realtek ac97 i use audacity.
i been thinking that maybe i could plug one end to microphone jack on tape player and the other end to line in jack on my realtek AC97.

anyway help me out if you can.
thanks again
harley

PS: i have another comp. that i could hook up that has a audic xt 9800 audio card , but i will have to get a nic card for it Quote from: harley88 on March 08, 2009, 04:21:22 AM

i been thinking that maybe i could plug one end to microphone jack on tape player and the other end to line in jack on my realtek AC97.

You meant line out, didn't you?Yeah Soybean is right. Use your line out on the Realtek.

However, as far as using the mic input on your karaoke machine, it is possibly (probably) only a mono channel and depending on how it is wired it may only record either the left or right side of your stereo minijack cable. It would spread that one side across the whole stereo spectrum, but you will still only be hearing a mono recording of one side of the original stereo mix from the computer. I guess you could get a cable that is 1/8 inch minijack stereo on one end (plugged into the stereo line out of your realtek) and splits into two separate mono 1/8 inch minijacks. You could plug each of these into the two mic inputs on the karaoke machine as long as you keep them recording into the karaoke at the same volume. Meaning if each mic input has a gain/volume knob, keep them both identical. This way you would have a mono recording still, but it would have both sides of the stereo mix blended together. May not sound the greatest though.

There is maybe another and better way to do this, which would be to get the 1/8 inch minijack stereo cable on one end (plugged into the realtek) that is RCA on the other end. Then plug the RCA end into the back of the karaoke unit's AUX inputs (page 4, input "40", called the AUX IN Left and Right Jacks, http://www.memorex.com/manuals/MKS8503.pdf). You will have to test to see if it records the AUX in to the tape though, as the manual does not say. If it does, then you'll be able to retain a stereo recording to tape. If not, you may be limited to a Stereo summed to mono recording.

If the stereo CD recordings you are putting to tape are of high quality, you can still get a decent blended mono mix, but the method using the AUX inputs would be the best way, as long as the unit records the Aux Ins.

One last NOTE if you plan to do this alot. If you can afford it, I would invest in a consumer or professional level cassette or dual cassette deck. I won't recommend any as there are too many to choose from, but you can easily research on the net depending on what you are LOOKING for. I guess the only important thing in this case is to make sure you have a cassette recorder that can record with a stereo input if you want to maintain the music recording on tape in stereo.

If you need clarification on anything let me know. I am kind of curious to know why anybody (who was not hearing impaired) would want to transfer from CD to cassette, considering how cheap CD (both fixed and portable) and mp3 players are these days. PS I am 56 years old so not some spotty young dumbass. Isn't the compact cassette dead, effectively?

PS I am 56 years old so not some spotty young dumbass. Isn't the compact cassette dead, effectively?

I used to like to make mixed tapes from CDs, to listen to while I was riding my skateboard. I would make a mash-up of all of my favorite music.

I still have a lot of my tapes. Most of them are titled "SKATE mix vol. (whatever)"

The reason that I used tapes instead of CDs, was the fact that the portable CD players would skip horribly while you were riding down the street. If you wanted to listen to music while you were riding, you had to use a cassette player.

ipods put an end to thisOK I'm with you now. I have to agree about the skipping. One thing puzzles me, is why so many people just have to have ipods when there are so many cheaper/better portable media mp3 players around. Like Archos. I admit I am deeply biased against Apple products.
vinylite , soybean , Dia de verano , and jj 3000

thank you fine folks for helping me out.
yes i meant line out.
i am going to try to hook my cassette player from mic.1 to my realtek LINE OUT and give it a try , but i will have to get some kind of adapter because the the plug on my cable is 1/8 inch and the jack on mic 1 is way bigger.
shoot i paid 16.00 for this cable , lord knows what one of those rca cables will cost,

i just want to convert a couple of cds to tape , because my car (1984 t-bird)
does not have a cd player and i want to keep it orig.

thanks again to all you fine folks
harley

PS: vinylite , the more i look at this karaoke mac. the more i am thinking that maybe i could record a cd to tape with it.
put cd in - put tape in-set to cda - start cd - push record on tape cassette
what you think?

i am 66 years old , what a diff. 10 years make. can remember 56.Hey Harley,

you know that will probably work using the CD player in the karaoke and recording to the tape player in the same unit. Only way to be sure is test it out. But look at page 18 of the on line manual (http://www.memorex.com/manuals/MKS8503.pdf), it looks like this will work.

Let me know if you need help with the setup, but I think this way would be best, and you won't have to purchase a thing except the tapes. In case you ever need one, the 1/8 inch minijack stereo to RCA is around $10.00 at RadioShack.

About the tape issue, I agree that tapes are pretty much out due to their tendency to wear out quickly, lack of ability to "skip" to the track you want to hear, and sound quality versus CDs. However, that means they're going to be collector's items sooner or later (some are already)! Also some people (including myself) feel that analog tape adds a warmth and mild compression to a song that CDs can't. These days there are alot of analog software and hardware emulators out there, but some still prefer vinyl, 8-track, and cassette. Vinyl is a better example, as it is also sought after for it's warmth and added depth to a mix.

If it's a casual listen CDs are fine, but sometimes it's not the same without cranking up an old favorite on vinyl...or you could just get one of these for your car

hello gentlemen

the karaoke machine recorded the cd to tape, but this old man is out of the cassette business
i am having a problem saving sound tracks with this program called audacity
are there anyone here familer with it , or does this belong on some other forum?

I downloaded the LAME (not an adjectif, it's part of the LAME PROJECT) acm codec and right clicked and chose install, clicked proceed anyway just LIKE the instructions I found on http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/install_lame.htm.

Here's the problem: The SC Audio converter does not have the .acm file type displayed when I click on the "convert to" window. It only has, .ogg, .mp3, .wma, and .wav
If anyone knows how to TACKLE this problem please do tell me.

Solve : Frustrating Microsoft Works Word Processor Problem, Help Much Appreciated!?

Answer»

Hello, I'm not very good with COMPUTERS so bare with me please .

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since TURNED my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The SECOND was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to DELETE or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have back up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much.
~Neil

try to open it with word if avaliable........hopefully you didn't SAVE over with a blank form.....good luckDo a search for the filename in Windows Explorer...hopefully if auto backup was enabled in Works the backup file will be there...it may have a different file extension but it should work.Searched in Windows Explorer, came across the same 'blank' file, but when opened in notepad shows bits and pieces of my notes along with Printer info.

Thanks for the help though! Any other ideas?Open that file with Works...

Solve : Guys, I really need help with this?

Answer»

So i've been POSTING a couple different topics here for the last week, and haven't really solved anything but this is a new issue and very very imporant so i could use some help, as i cant figure it out......
i had to wipe out my 2 computers here and do a clean install of windows xp, media edition if that matters....anyway before i did that i saved everything i think i needed onto an external hard drive and also a flash drive....saved all program files folders.....
my problem is that when i try to use outlook express(either new or the one i saved from before the reinstall) i cannot get my address book back, it starts brand new outlook express and i can SEEM to get it back....i've followed online instructions o try to do so but it wont work.........
I need help, pleaseDid you use OE to back up your emails and contacts in the first place? This is how you would put them back by using the .mbx file,
or back up the Windows Address Book (.wab) file.no i didnt........i just copied the program folders and my documents and SETTINGS folder to a hard drive and flash drive..... i thought i would be able to just drag and drop those folders into the apprpriate spots after reinstalling windows Quote from: king244 on March 05, 2009, 02:55:21 PM

no i didnt........i just copied the program folders and my documents and settings folder to a hard drive and flash drive..... i thought i would be able to just drag and drop those folders into the apprpriate spots after reinstalling windows
I don't believe that would save your address book. You would have needed to specifically copy or backup Windows Address Book (.wab) file before you did a clean install of windows xp.but wouldnt all of that be copied to the hard and flash drives anyway, without specifically backing up.....i mean the daqta is there to begin with...DEPENDS on how you backed it up...i believe the address book may be in a different directory.
Run search on the USB's for *.wabi dont think it saved it either, what you did is like trying to open a program short cut on another COMPUTER that doesnt have the program, meaning you pretty much took a picture for lack of better terms of how it looked and nothing came along with it, hopefully you follow me........good luckyeah, thats what i've been thinking too......i was just hoping there was a magic back door to get to it....
thanks for all the replies guys. Quote from: patio on March 06, 2009, 07:19:49 AM
Depends on how you backed it up...i believe the address book may be in a different directory.
Run search on the USB's for *.wab
the only thing with the wab is wab.exe in the folder i put on the flash drive, when i click on it ,it brings up OE but with only the new contacts i've been adding since yesterday, not all the ones i originally hadThen your old address book is gone...sorry.

Solve : Outlook with Hotmail Connector?

Answer»

I am using Outlook 2003 with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Anyways, I downloaded the Hotmail/MSN "Connector" so it would receive my Hotmail emails, but, when I look in my inbox on the internet from hotmail.com, many emails are listed there that are not in my Outlook inbox...
It can TAKE a long time before these actually get downloaded.

Anyone heard of this?

Thanks,
Jesse ZylstraTrying to DELETE the email ACCOUNT on my computer and then add it again...

I get the feeling that Outlook Connector may be buggy...

EDIT: Seems to be stuck at 32% downloading.. this might be an MSN issue... Deleting the account, exiting, adding again using the outlook connector, exiting completely, and opening Outlook 2003 again seems to have RESOLVED the issue.

Solve : Software error message?

Answer» I have an error message that I absolutely do not understand. It says, 'Video GROUP Program error, File Ram Pod, Line 326'. What does that message mean? I also have a few more questions as I did a DEEP scan computer check up today. My SOUND system isn't working properly, as well as IE is driving me crazy and I don't know how to set the settings to get thru a firewall. I currently use my telephone comany's DSL service to ACCESS the Internet.

I thought though, I would start with the software error message first, and get that out of the way. This computer is second hand, so anything could be wrong, and I wouldn't be aware of it.

Thanks for any help, if any is available

Veronica Lea
What software is giving you that error?
Where are you posting from, since you can't connect?
What's the sound problem?
You have to be more specific. The software I used to do the deep scan was Fix It Utilities. I am on AOL, but my DSL is thru AT&T, and they use Internet Explorer. The Video Adapter 1, had a red check mark beside Video Ram. The Network INTERFACE Card 1, had a red check mark next to ping and throughput. The Multimedia System 1, had red check mark next to CDAudio Test and Wave Audio Test. The basic problem with my sound, is it is very low to sometimes none at all, even though I have volume at it's highest setting. My computer has a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio card. I know nothing about what that card is capable of. I used to use Sound Blaster.

As you probably can guess, I'm a bit confused. There is another error message with a number to it, but I can't seem to find it right now. I know I saved it, but exactly where it went, I have to search for it. This is about all the information I can give you at this time.

Thanks,

Veronica Lea

I am not sure what you mean Dudeoxide, as I never intended for it to come across as PowerPoint being the DVD Writer; merely the means in which to create a slide show.

Then we would try and resolve his/her burner problem.

I'm thinking he means a program where you put the pictures in and it burns the collection of pictures to a DVD.

Solve : Can't Open a Folder?

Answer»

My previous computer's power supply and motherboard died, I got the hard drive out and connected it to my new computer via USB. I'm able to open all of the folders except one - documents and settings/"username". The hard drive keeps running and I get no error message and end up cutting the power to the hard drive. I'm able to open the other username folders. The new computer is running Vista.Right-click on the folder and go to Properties. What does it SAY?I'm not at the computer now, but I remember it said 0 memory USED, but there should be stuff in there. It may be possible that it was corrupted when the PSU went out.

Have you tried accessing any folders that are within that folder? For example, in the address bar, try accessing C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Desktop. Try this out when you get home and see if it works. If not, you may want to try a recovery program such as Recuva (it's free).Taking ownership of the folder might work.Dusty's advice is worth to try, however the link is for XP.
For Vista:

Taking ownership didn't work. I was able to open only one the desktop sub-folder, and not the OTHERS. I'll try recuva next.

Try the entire My Documents folder...if you already have ownership of most of it nothing will be changed.

Solve : Windows Alert help?

Answer»

On my System TRAY next to the Clock is an Icon for WINDOWS Security Alert.

I have my Anti Virus program TURNED on and up to Date.
I have my Windows Firewall turned on.

But this STILL is there and it says my computer may be at risk.
What is this and how can I get ride of it? Or what do I have to do?
Can anybody HELPI haven't used this in a while but assuming you're using vista there should be an option when you open the security alert to say you've got your own anti virus program and to stop complaining, though it's windows it will always complain.

Solve : Long download problems?

Answer»

Hello, I have been trying to download a very large FILE using FIREFOX. After about 24 hours, my computer will become unresponsive. I cant open any other application. I cannot restart my computer because I cant resume the download. What can I do?

Winxp

Get a download manager. The site will not let you use one.Exactly what are you downloading and how big is it?A game and its 3.7 GB. The site will only do http downloadsWhat is the game, may I ask?

A game that big has to have some sort of torrent option.I just realized this.

In Mozilla Firefox, you can pause and continue your downloads. This may be what you want.I do use firefox, but still, if I do pause the download I still cant get anything to FUNCTION. I am downloading from IMAGE shack. It has a torrent manager which you use and then download your file via http. The speeds can be slow. What kind of connection is it?
Download link, please.I was ready to Post the tooth but Photobucket is not cooperating....

Solve : Windows installer error...?

I looked online and I can't find anything.

My only suggestion (now) would be to post a HijackThis Log.
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthisI also went ahead and re-sized your picture. thanx for the resize
and what sould i do with this website..? what can it do ? I have Norton AntiVirus! Quote

what can it do ? I have Norton AntiVirus!
That makes me worried..... Which Norton Antivirus do you have?

If you GO to that website, download HijackThis.
Install it and run a System Scan and get a Log.
Post it here.I have Norton AntiVirus 2008
and does HijackThis work even if it's a trial version? It's simply a utility that basically lists what starts up with the computer.
Free and a few megabytes big but is very effective in identifying problems with your computer.is the log file the one on the notepad?
Yep.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Solve : Directx9.0 error?

When i go to play Call of Duty 4 an pops up that says Directx9 encountered an unrecoverable error check Readme for possible solutions.
Can someone help me.What OS are you using?WINDOW xp with service pack 2HAVE you got DirectX 9.0 installed CURRENTLY?

Try re-downloading and re-installing:

Did you check all your system specs to see if it can run it?

The computer that has the Directx error does not have internet.

SORRY... I forgot.

Ahh... I'll do some looking into it and get back to you.

Did you see this error from the first time you opened it, or did it just appear recently?I just built this computer a week ago so it started as soon as I got COD4 installed and tried playing it.I've looked at some topics on other forums and what most (3 people) had to do was re-install Windows.

On one other forum, a re-install of the game worked.

So, I'd go with option 2, to start with. Have you run - -->Start/Run/dxdiag ?

Just to check DirectX is itself all good to go - otherwise it seems the game itself is causing a conflict perhaps.

Solve : Music and video help?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm new here and the site was the first to show up when I searched for "computer help" so here goes. I got a Dell Inspiron 1525 in March, and about a month ago tried to play a movie. I'm using Windows Vista also. It turns out, I can't play any video or music from CD's or DVD's, though it's NOT a hardware problem because I got Photoshop and Microsoft OFFICE from CD's. Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, iTunes, they can read the file names and length of the songs, but nothing happens. With movies it sometimes plays the first few seconds but then freezes up. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!Welcome

First off, we will NEED more info about your computer to help you out. MAKE? model? when did it start happening? is this new problem? Thanks. Isn't the make and model Dell Inspiron 1525? Like I said, I got it in March, and my friend helped me install Microsoft Office and Photoshop from CDs onto it. In July I tried to play movies and music and it did not work. What player are you using?
Do you have on-line video, and sound?I've tried Media Player classic and Windows Media Player for movies and those 2 plus iTunes for music, all with the same result, they can read the file names and know how long the songs are and who SINGS them and how many scenes there are, and can even play the first few seconds of the beginnings sometimes, but then nothing happens.

Online video and sound, like games, youtube, etc work without a problem. Do you have another computer you can test these files on?Yes. The everything works on my old desktop, the movies work in DVD players, and the CDs work in cd players also. You may have some codecs missing.
To determine that, try VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/Yes, I'd forgotten I had that and tried it, same thing happened. So I got the Combined Community Codec Pack, which also didn't help. Quote

So I got the Combined Community Codec Pack
This wasn't necessary, because VLC has all needed codecs, so if it doesn't play, must be something else.
Is your drive listed in Windows Explorer, and Device Manager without any errors?
What type of drive is it?Also, when you said they worked on another computer, did you copy these files over or did you use existing files? When I say the files worked, I mean I put CDs and movies in the Dell and nothing happened, and I put the same CDs and movies in the other computer and they played fine.
Uh, I don't really know anything about computers, so I'm not sure what kind of drive it is. This is what I could find from right clicking:
DVD RW Drive (E:)
WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 Disk drive
Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-5560A ATA Device DVD/CD-ROM drivesYou mentioned in your first post that it isn't a hardware problem.
Can you explain more please?Well I've installed PROGRAMS and transferred Word Documents onto the laptop with the same dvd drive, plus it can recognize the names and time durations of music tracks, so I think it can read things fine. What happens if you try to copy the files to the computer?

Solve : clean/format hard drive?

Answer»

I am using windows XP Pro and need to clean the hard drive of everything so I can install another software. What software can I use to remove everything off the hard drive ?Do you just want more space on your disk? If so goto control panel, and 'PROGRAMS and features' for vista or 'add/remove programs' in XP (someone else will have to tell you for other OS') and follow the instructions to uninstall programs you don't want.

If you actually want to format your drive you'll have to re-install your OS aswell as all the programs you wanted to keep.

FBDo you want to remove the system files also? Re-install Windows?I do not want to recovery or add more space I want to erase everything on the hard drive. Just like if you went to the computer store and BOUGHT a brand new hard drive.Have you got your Windows XP CD? If you have, there is a very simple way of formatting....I have tried this many TIMES so far. I have a 20 gig hard drive and only have 18.3 gig before installing another software. I have deleted all partitions and still loose over 1 gig of space.Wait. We're thinking of something COMPLETELY different.

Why not visit the hard drive manufacturer's website...be-it Maxtor, Seagate, Western digital...download their diagnostic software...and have at it.

If the drive is already installed on an XP machine, separate from the operating system, you can use your ADMINISTRATIVE Tools, in XP, as previously recommended. Quote from: holidayrick on August 24, 2008, 11:48:48 AM

Solve : Formatting discs?

Answer»

Hi all, I am a new member to this sight so hello to everybody.
i am having trouble loading my Tom Tom sat nav onto my PC, which is operating on Windows XP
When I go into 'My Computer' and click on the relevant drive it tells me " The disk in drive J is not formatted. Do you WANT to format it now?"
I thought that when a disk was formatted it deleted all the data on it.
As you have all probably worked worked out by now i am not very good on computers so any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanking you all in anticipation
DaveWhat is "drive J"? Is it your satnav memory card? Or are you plugging the satnav in via a USB lead? Have you looked at the second drive letter?

You don't want to format.

thanks for your reply.
I am connecting my sat nav by USB and that is the message that comes up. I am worried that if I do click on yes to format, it will wipe my memory card of all it's data.
By clicking on no, i can do do NOTHING with it, so I am in limbo.
Thanks
Dave Quote from: Dias de verano on August 23, 2008, 12:02:45 PM

What is "drive J"?

Drive J is the USB drive, "J:\". If you format the Sat Nav, you will have to get a new one. If will erase all the files that make the sat nav operate.

Go to Device Manager, in Control Panel, and look for the name of the sat nav in there, somewhere.

Is it there? There should be a second drive letter, either I or K.

Did you get a software CD-ROM with the satnav?

What model number is the Tomtom?

There is only J drive that comes up. yes there is an installation disc and that is loaded on my computer and my sat nav is a Tom Tom Go 710
DaveThe software is called Tomtom HOME, have you tried running it? Are you trying to BACK up your Tomtom onto your PC? have you looked at the Tomtom support site?

http://www.tomtom.com/support/category.php?ID=1&Language=1&FID=3171

Yes I have tried the support site but upto now they have not been able to sort me out. Could you please tell me that if i should click on 'format disc' will it erase the data or is it just reading the INFO on it

I will get in touch with tom tom again and see what they have to say.

Solve : Ms Word became unable to open?

Answer»

I have a desktop running Windows Visa Ultimate and Word 03 Professional. All new six months ago. Worked great until last week. Now Word will not completely open. When clicked on it STARTS searching for 'features'. Then says they are on a network and unavailable. One FILE it always asks for is pro11.msi. I have been unable to discover a remedy and tried several.
Any help appreciated.Does this problem coincide in any way with any changes or additions?

That .msi file is a Microsoft installation file but not sure why it is asking for it now! Do you happen to have an install disk for Word? - if so I'd do a removal of it (Word) and reinstall. If it came with the machine already on then not so easy.

''Tried several remedies'' - what have you tried so far?OLD program............buy new software and stop cheapskating.......... Quote from: merlin on August 23, 2008, 05:22:23 PM

Old program............buy new software and stop cheapskating..........
That's a ridiculous comment. Office 2003 should work fine with Windows Vista. If Office 2003 is still serving them well, there's no need to go out and buy an upgrade. So, suggestions should be focused on resolving the problem with Office 2003.Re ''old'' software - I am not sure why for some the latest always has to be best ..... I still use Office 2000 and an old image app over 10 years old ... so I am a cheapskate too!

There are and have been many occasions when an updated app has come out and it is so different it presents a whole new set of challenges, without necessarily giving any great advantages. If an app does what is wanted - which is the priority, then fail to see why ''latest'' has to either best or even necessary.

Anyways - to OP - I still think if you have that Word disk - uninstall and TRY a reinstall - as one option anyways.I guess updates just might have influenced things but - hmmm, no disk. Right now not sure what options remain.

Let's see if anyone can come up with other ideas - sorry not very helpful.I don't know of disks being ''used up'' ...... they are usually read-only.

Perhaps a look in Ebay might find something. Worth a try.How important are the other components of MS Office? Do you use Access, the database? Do you use Outlook?

If Word is your main need and you can do without Access and Outlook, you could make the step up to Word 2007 by buying Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. If you live in the U.S., here's a great price on it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116135

Solve : Cannot boot win98 cd?

Answer»

Hello

My problem is I was planning to USE the freeware VirtuaPC by Microsoft.
But I can't boot from the win98 cd boot up disk. There's nothing wrong with
the cd as I used it a year ago with partitioning. Also it autoplays just fine.
I also can't boot it up at startup. The computer just skips it.
I have Win XP pro sp2. Could it be the DVDR driver? Because I have
a DVDR but it is listed in the devices as CDRw.Do you have your BIOS set up to boot first from a cd?
RussYou have Windows XP, and you're trying to boot from Windows 98 CD in order to INSTALL Win 98 in Virtual PC?
This is not the way to do it.
I use VMware virtual machine, but it must be similar path.
You simply put Win 98 CD into the drive (when computer is already on), and point virtual PC to that drive as the source of installation. But all the other boot up CDs ( XP, application bootups,)
they all boot up just fine at the press DEl to go to boot up options
during startup.Any WAYS I'm checking out Virtua Warewin98 first....then winxp..........>PARTIONYou're talking about dual boot, we're talking about virtual PC.

Solve : MS Word Install Help!?

Answer»

Hi
Have bought Advent 4211 (no cd drive) but want to install MS Word on it, so as advised by PC World

"buy MS Office Home and Student 2007 plus a usb stick (2GB). Then put the cd in another computer, install the package, then save on the usb stick and install on the Advent. Simple as that"

I put in the cd to the 'other' computer and choose to install the Home and Student on the usb stick, once COMPLETED put that in the Advent...full of files but can't see another install file to upload it, when clicking on the Word icon there's 'not enough disk space'.

Can anyone untangle this or help??!!

Thanks Not to be funny or curt, but you'd be better off purchasing an external CD drive...hooking it up to your computer...and INSTALLING the software, legally.

Just a thought...I agree with Saviour.

You may be able to copy the CONTENTS of the CD Drive to the Flash Drive and run the setup from the flash drive on the other computer but I'm sure a company like Microsoft will protect their CD's.

Solve : Finally have Service Pack 3 Now no sound?

Answer»

I assume you are working a day job for absence of help and that I understand.

I am trying to uninstall SP3 as it is just NOTORIOUS with errors. Of course mine is the audio problem. Your PROGRAM was helpful in determining the information that you needed but the site you gave me was not.

I tried to restore two times hoping to get rid of SP3 but it lingers on. I am thinking my only recourse is to reformat my computer on go back SP2.I tried to delete Service Pack3 but the computer would not let me "something about the SYSTEM cannot find the file specified"

So, I re-formatted (what I call it) and now it is off. But still the audio is still off. What I do not understand is that you would think the audio drivers would be on the XP CD and just update from there. At least that is the case with 98se.

Anyway thanks for the effort for trying to help me and I will check this thread from time to time if you have any ideas on the audio,I just did a little research on your computer...

It originally came with Windows Millennium Edition, so I'm assuming the XP operating system was an upgrade or a clean install....correct?

Now, from your EVEREST report...there are two issues. Your motherboard has inboard sound...and there also seems to be a separate audio adapter for a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE.

Here's my question to you: Are you using the inboard audio...or the Creative Audigy SE which is a separate card?the Creative Audigy SE which is a separate card. Because my speakers since day 1 when my brother gave me this computer that is where I connected the speakers. I assumed the inboard burned out and he installed the other audigy se card. I suppose I should have asked him!

My audio is working again. I just kept doing updates and searches.

And yes it was an upgrade from Windows Millennium Edition to XP of which by brother did. How did you know this. Was this something that you needed to know?

Anyway SP3 has so many issues that I will wait a LONG TIME before I ever put it back on again. I only put it on because at first my computer wouldn't let me for what ever reason and then I tried through Google and it did make it that time.Well...

Needless to say...I'm glad you have your sound back.

If you go to HP's website and search for your particular model in their Support section, you'll find a lot of information about your particular computer...if you don't already know. That's why I asked you for the model number.

BTW...just in case you'd like the LINK to your particular model number at HP, here it is:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=61317&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

I also asked you to download and run Everest...which you did...and this gave us additional info, as well...like the Audigy Sound card...among others.

If there's anything else we can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask.

All my best...

SteveThank you Steave,

Thank you for your hard work and research for this computer.

Solve : need a binary of c++ compiler for linux.?

Answer»

I have a copy of Xandros linux os; my free support account has run out;but,in
order to DOWNLOAD the c++ compiler package, you have to have active support.
So, if I so much as want to './configure,make,make INSTALL', and such,I naturally
get the error message:"could not compile package; no acceptable C compiler
installed. It is a catch-22!!!! If I could find a binary form of the compiler package, then I could make-install PACKAGES. PS, I had downloaded the c++,
package several times before, on that system, but I am always reinstalling
the os's; this time, the timing was bad. Unlike windows/dos, linux is very hinky
about installing THINGS that are not in binary form. Thak You--kurt

Your a genius; I have downloaded cs3, it worked perfectly.....I wonder the Adobe Info COULD NOT adress this for XP so I am very grateful to you

Heinz

PS: Did you find it WORTHWHILE to down load SP# for Xp?It's just one of those problems that tends to slip by, I suppose. It probably hasn't come up often enough on XP for Adobe to notice it. Heck, I couldn't really even find anything helpful on Google. I figured that SINCE it wasn't properly registered, we would try registering it ourselves! Heh.

As for SP3, I would recommend downloading it because it has a lot of security updates. Some people have had TROUBLE with it, but I (and most of our members) haven't experienced any problems. The installation went very smoothly for me and I have even noticed slightly better performance. Thanks againYou are very welcome.

Solve : Lost sound - audio device - none?

Answer»

I don't know how I managed it, but was playing an audio CD which began jumping to the next track before finishing. Then it would not eject using the cursor on the eject symbol, nor would it eject from the tray using the tray button. Switched off, restart, tray ejects.

Now no sound. Checked speaker connections and volume control levels - all ok.

Mistakenly thinking that I threw the baby out with the bathwater last Friday in a clear out by removing Realtek AC'97, I hunt for the replacement driver. Eventually found a download without using driver sharks from Gigabyte - still had to do a body swerve even there - (it's a hand me down Titan 533 series GA-8SR533P).

So I've downloaded the 30MB driver, and open the box. Install shield wizard starts, all GOING well. Then stops and disappears. Tea break?
Try again. Same result. Try again - 'access denied' - What? Try again - 'disc space on C drive insufficient, need 65MB' There's 60GB empty on there! Try again - not having it. It's like the foods in the cupboard, but I can't get it to the plate. (Clue to my level of PCmanship).

But now I'm looking for the volume icon in the task bar (after repeated searching through help processes) and it ain't there.
Seeking through control panel to audio devices comes up with a blank window - 'No audio device'. Well, I haven't got it! It's still in the machine . . . No audio devices of any kind anywhere. Window blank - file empty.

Tried system restore several times to different check points, and am confronted with 'cannot restore to this point - no changes made'. Getting the hump now.

Clearly a driver cannot drive something that is not there. Am I looking at a failed audio card, or is there something that I've missed through configuration or a basic lack of understanding?

This is day two of frustration, and seeking advice. I'll try and answer tech questions as best I know, but it kind of looks like it's gone pop. I can still watch the videos - they still work, just the 'silent' versions though.

Gravitational damage test from upper floor imminent. Advice welcomed, though I appreciate it may be 'hardware'.Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

I've downloaded to the desktop, extracted the files, and attempted to read/install from the XP folder.
Nothing in there gets it installed. Much the same story with the rest. For example;
ISDEL EXE tells me an installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll installisation;
INST 321 exe - windows can't open file etc. choose a program/website to open.

The only change is: I now have a little speaker type icon on the task bar which if double clicked opens up the SiS 7012 audio utility (sounds promising). Two tabs; config: all options greyed out; Midi: select DLS/SF2 to open, with browse button - pick a location. Probably obvious to you - Scotch mist to me.

Should I be doing things with the run command?

PS I've just been rooting. MS Help and support. Control panel> new hardware>found RealtekAC'97 installing.
I've led it to the desktop file wherein the realtek programs sit, and its installed the SYS file. Now seeking SM BUS controller. Can't find it - don't have a floppy or CD. All stopped.

PPS OK - looked for anything about BUS by browsing. Found BUS controllers - click> window with SiS thingy - warned not signed blah blah hit go> screen goes black - blue letters declare problem encoutered windows is CLOSING down. Restarts - with sound re-instated - I have sound again.

Its works. I'm leaving it alone. Haven't played an audio CD yet though.

Solve : AOL 9.0 email problem?

Answer»

A friend is using AOL 9.0 and has developed a problem with email. When he goes to read email, all the new email is shown. Then it disappears and only the envelope is shown on the left hand SIDE of the folder where his new email would be. If he opens the sent folder, the same thing happens. If you DC the envelope in new mail, you can open the email but there is no subject, date etc. showing the description of the email. I had him download and install AOL 9.1 to SEE if the was a corrupt file and the same problem occurs. When he opens his email, a window opens indicating there was an ERROR loading a file and AOL would try to correct the problem. It doesn't say what the file name is or id the problem was corrected.

He is on XP SP2 and the HP computer is about 4 years old. Problems started two days ago. I did a system restore to a week ago with on luck.

Solve : Sygate blocking NT Kernel?

Answer»

Hi guys, I have a question that I know you guys can help out with.

Recently I started using Sygate firewall instead of the regular Windows firewall. Everything's been running smoothly. But today, I noticed that Sygate's little message window keeps popping up every 5 minutes showing this message

"An APPLICATION named NT Kernel & System has been blocked from accessing the network, etc".

Now can someone tell me what the heck is NT Kernel & System. Do I need to allow this access or is it good that Sygate blocked it?

How do I stop Sygate from showing this message again. The notification sound/message box is a bit annoying.I have another Sygate related question so I'll put it here as well.

Just got this message
"NDIS User Mode I/O Driver (ndisuio.sys) is being contacted from a remote machine (I forgot to exact IP address) using local port, etc.

What is this and why is it trying to get contact I clicked don't allow access..

Can someone please help?

Sygate still notifies me constantly about having blocked NT Kernel, NDIS user mode I/O driver, and Generic host services.. I'm not sure what these are. When I go into Sygate, and right click these three, it shows the "ask" status.. so I guess that's why Sygate keeps notifying me that it's blocking them.

Should I just change the status to "block" for these three. Why are they trying to access the network, whatever that means.

I'm liking Sygate as the firewall, seems its a lot safer now but I don't want to keep seeing the notifications. I already selected "don't show window again" but the windows keep appearing every now and then.Hi, got just the same problem some days ago, here's something that helped me
-- I copied it from 'http://forums.techarena.in/virus-spyware/173886.htm'
(HOPE that they don't mind )

...
Go to Administrative Tools/Services and find the Wireless Zero
Configuration and disable it. You can look at the Dependencies and see that
it's using NDIS.
...

With date of 31. January 2008 Duane Arnold gave a lot more of pretty sophisticated hints so it might be useful for you to have a look there.

PS: As I got a German XP the most difficult task was to find what "Wireless Zero Configuration" is in German ...

Well there's your problem. And I do believe that some, if not all of the games are ad supported. In other words they are adware.

http://www.bigfishgames.com/

Insaniquarium! DeluxeYes, I in fact PURCHASED the game, but it COMES with a bit of adware. Now there's some easy fix or something to edit some text file, which holds the ad locations... just look it up.Well, if you get bigfishgames that were given for free on the net, then it's probably still ad supported versions. Otherwise, just buy the game and remove the ads. Gamestop sells bigfish games or at least some, I saw *censored*'s Kitchen available on their site for downloading after you paid.1. I actually own this game and have never experienced any sort of adware, bloatware, or anything of that nature. I have also never heard of this HAPPENING to anyone else.

2. Downloading cracked games from Limewire is illegal and is a good way to get yourself infected. Of course, if you're downloading games illegally, I personally think you deserve the infection.

As far as downloading from the net, you can download an ISO or some other working bundle of windows someone uploaded (original, not any modified versions) that will accept your legal cd key that you have legally obtained, which is essentially doing same as above.

Downloading and installing any other XP like XP black or any other bundle not requiring any cd key or a cd key is provided to you with the download is illegal. Quote

This is INCORRECT, and illegal, as well. Micro$oft is the only legal distributor of Windows. Posting a copy on the net, in order to distribute it, is against the law.

Solve : Help Duplicating Page Numbering Trick in Word 2007?

Answer»

I've been using Office XP for quite some time and it's still on my main PC. I have a more recently built PC with Office 2007 on it. I'm just getting around to getting my feet wet in the new suite. I'm looking for suggestions about help with this specific task or a POINTER to forums that can help with this and similar questions.

In Word XP I created a template "small letter.dot" which OPENS up a "page" 5.5" x 8.5" (half a letter size page). When I start a new document based on this template in Word XP I get the page size I'm expecting plus the current date appears at the top of the page. It appears as plain text; that is it's not a field. No macro is involved. I forget how I did it.

When I open a new document based on this template in Word 2007 the document size is correct but the date (or anything ELSE) does not appear.

I OPENED the template to edit in Word XP and do not see anything on it. I wonder what the cool trick was? I'd like to be able to recreate the behavior in Word 2007!

Solve : Turning on a brand new built computer?

Answer»

Hello, My dad built a new computer and has everything plugged in right. When we turned it on it asks for the disk so I put in the windows xp disk. A blue screen came up saying something about "error 7" then push any button to continue or exit. When the enter key was hit the screen went blank and now even after shutting the computer off and unplugging it can't get that screen or anything else to come up. I know this is PRETTY vague but wondering if the error 7 thing tips anyone off on what the problem could be.Not sure re error 7 but am wondering - did the mobo come with a drivers disk ... because often this after correct jumpering of mobo is necessary before going on further. At least - used to be.

Be useful to know the hardware make-up of this build - any PCI cards in yet etc? Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 05, 2008, 04:32:22 PM

What is this supposed to mean ? ?
You can't install any drivers until an OS is installed...
Just wondering. My last pc was a custom build, and the Asus mobo came with a disk of drivers - for the mobo itself - and this was applied before any installation of an OS, after setting up jumpers.warrenisit - First, enter the BIOS: a) is the hard drive correctly identified?, b) load "setup defaults" or similar for your BIOS.

1) remove (disconnect) everything from the computer except keyboard, mouse and video; remove any other expansion cards (leave the memory!) and all peripherals. 2) remove and re-seat video card, if using. 3) remove and re-seat memory. 4) remove and re-connect hard drive connections - at hard drive and at motherboard; also, VERIFY jumper settings, if applicable. 5) verify that all motherboard connections are correct and tight and that all fans are connected. 6) remove and re-seat cpu. You can attempt to boot after each step.

Still no boot: 1) if using a separate video card and the motherboard has onboard video, remove the video card and revert to the onboard video. 2) remove all but one RAM module - verify in motherboard manual what slot to use for one module; repeat using each module by itself, attempting to boot with each module in turn. 3) download and run the diagnostic software from your hard drive manufacturer - you don't need a working OS install for this.

Post back - hopefully with good news!

drmsucks... THANKS for the pointers man. I'll give it a shot and let you know what's up.

WarrenisitIt'll be a while before I get to check everything out but I will try to reply within a week. Thanks for the help.Good luck - we'll be here! Quote from: ChrisXPPro on August 09, 2008, 11:25:48 AM

Really ? ?
Which board ?
I'd certainly be INTERESTED in seeing this info...This was a good while ago - but I found the CD which is labelled ....

"P4PE2-X" ...... Intel 84SPE Chipset Series Support CD rev 40.10. Runs a file ASSETUP.EXE from BIN folder.

Best I remember - this disk was run pretty much first of any.

Folders in that disk includes - Drivers - which itself contains, LAN, USB2, Audio, chipset, display, promise. A Software folder contains various things such as DirectX, Acrobat etc.And where would these install to if there is no OS on the machine ? ?

The last time i saw this was in a DOS enviornment where certain drivers were loaded at boot time but you still had to have an OS installed... Quote from: patio on August 17, 2008, 08:10:16 AM

Hmmm - good question!!! It's too long ago now to be honest - wish I could remember. Sorry.

Solve : Uninstalling a program?

Answer»

I downloaded a free CAD program in Feb. of '07. I haven't used it in well over a year and I WANT to uninstall it. Problem is when I go to "programs and features" to get RID of it, nothing happens. Well, actually SOMETHING is happening because if I try to click uninstall again, it says "Wait for the current program to uninstall or change". I can close out of control PANEL, but when I try to do anything else it completely hangs. I let it set there once for 30 minutes and nothing happened. If anyone has some advice that would be great. Thanks.
I have Vista Home Premium what program is it?Try to reinstall it over the top, and then uninstall.
If that doesn't help, try Revo: http://www.revouninstaller.com/Tip:To rid a PC of unwanted programs..type regedit in the run box.....then search and delete programs....this should be only used if you are sure....and back-up system before- hand. Now go into program files and delete the folder of the program you wish,to delete....

< The advise above is given on a if you know pc> It seems that reinstalling it did the trick. I know the version I had wasn't the newest version, so maybe that had something to do with it.Very good

Solve : open source gif animator software?

Answer»

hi everyone,

do anyone KNOW that is there any open source gif animator software

          available on net.

if it is written in visual basic. It will be more helpful.

       other languages are also fine.

      please help me.

   thanks in advance.

Have you tried GIMP?I don't believe GIMP has GIF animation capability.

I think your expectations (open soucre and VB) might be unrealistic. Anyway, I think you'll probably have to do some SERIOUS searching. Start at:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=GIF+animatorMicrosoft Front Page 2000 comes with MS Image Composer and GIF Animator... I'm not sure if you can get it seperate or if it is free.... Quote from: soybean on August 15, 2008, 07:15:28 AM

I don't believe GIMP has GIF animation capability.

Actually, it does. You just have to DOWNLOAD the GIMP Animation Package (GAP)...
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Using_GAP
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Simple_Animations
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Advanced_Animations

Granted, I don't think GIMP has VB functionality, but last I heard, they were trying to develop something for GIMP#, so it may possibly work to an extent...
http://gimp-sharp.sourceforge.net

And, of course, GIMP is open-source.You should have more than enough software here:

All free and tested for SPYWARE and adware.
