Solve : buying cpu+motherboards?

Answer»

Ok so i want to buy new cpu. i have been reading around and i have found that i should buy a new motherboard too.
The motherboard that i currently have is very old, so i think i shall buy a new one.
how shall i go about buying one? what are good ones?
I have also recently installed some ddr ram and want to keep them for the new motherboard  will this effect the motherboards i can buy?

Lastly i am not afraid of opening my computer up but will installing a new motherboard be easy.

Edit: I have been looking around on ebay and i my budget is around £50 What's your budget?
What do you want this upgrade for?
And what motherboard do you actually have right now?
Modern motherboards use DDR2 or DDR3, so a new motherboard will require new RAM unfortunately. My budget is around £50 and i want this upgrade to speed up my computer its become sluggish.
im not sure what motherboard i have now, how can i find out without opening up the computer?
thanks for your help so far.You can GET all your system info by going to the web site [majorgeeks.com] scrool down to system info, find BELARC ADVISOR.  Click on it and download your system info Quote from: yesterday on June 25, 2008, 07:07:54 AM

If we go by the analogy that a computer is an omelette, then the motherboard is the egg that holds it all together. Have you ever replaced the egg in an omelette?

(OK, so it's a little easier then that)Go here and download Everest Home.
Please save and attach a log so we know exactly what hardware you have.
Your issue may be software related rather than a hardware problem if your computer has become sluggish. Thanks for your help. the report made by Everest was too big to attach here.
But yesterday i used another programme to scan my hardware called INSPECS here is what it told me:

System Info
Model : ASRock K7VM2
Chassis Type : Desktop
Operating System : Microsoft WINDOWS XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Processor
Number Of Processors : 1
Type : AMD Duron
Processors Bus Speed : 266 MHz
Motherboard
Manufacturer : Not Available
Model : K7VM2 Rev. 2.00
CPU Slot/Socket Type : Socket A (462)
Chipset Vendor : VIA P4M266/KM266 (VT8375) Rev. 00
Bios Manufacturer : American Megatrends Inc.
Bios Version : P1.30
Graphics
Model : S3 AGP S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR
AGP Speed : 4x
Monitor : Plug and Play Monitor
Storage
Hard Drive 1 : SAMSUNG SP2014N
Size : 190.78 GB
Memory
Total RAM Installed : 2048 MB
Type : DDR Not Available PC3200
Used RAM Slots: 2 of 2

It seems i have socket A for cpu does this mean i cannot use another cpu except those made for sockets A's.That tells us a fair amount actually, most of the important bits.
One last thing though, can you right click on My Computer and choose Properties?
You'll see something like "AMD Duron Processor, 1800MHZ" - can you tell us what the actual measurement is?
It should either be 1400, 1600 or 1800MHZ, or it might be shown in GHz.
I think this computer has a software problem though, that shouldn't be sluggish with those specs if it wasn't before.it read 1.05ghz,
The computer is gradually BECOMING slower it takes time for folders and FILES to open, i have ran different cleaners such as ccleaner  to get rid of unnecessary files but nothing.I think this is just Windows rot setting in.  Please list the maintenance you have performed, also how long is it since Windows was installed on this computer?
If you want to upgrade your CPU, short of Ebay or other auctions you'll need a new motherboard, which again if bought new would need a new CPU and new RAM.I have performed disk clean up and disk defragmentor. I have carried out spyware scans and virus scans. i have got rid of old unused files and temp files.
Windows has been installed on this for about 3-4 years.

i do not want to buy a new motherboard as it would mean i would not be able to use the ram i bought. So i think i shall just buy cpu instead of ebay.

thanks for all your help.I believe Windows rot is the problem here.  Certainly a new CPU will improve performance, as would fitting a dedicated graphics card, but I believe you won't see much improvement without reinstalling Windows.
That board is only tested up to an Athlon XP 2600+, so anything beyond that is not guaranteed to work properly, or at all.And how many processes are running in task manager? I find myself trimming the list in my autorun section whenever my boot value for processes goes up (WHY O WHY do so many programs INSIST on having a tray icon, or some irrelevant background task?)I have just reinstalled windows and the computer has improved but not as much as i hoped.
I have recently sold my psp on ebay and that leads me with enough money to buy a new motherboard so i think i will buy one of ebay.
What sort shall i buy and what shall i look for in buying one?
Can i get any motherboard or does it have to be a specific one?

If anyone can point to a buying guide or just give a few tips i would be grateful.
Thank you.A new motherboard will probably not help your situation as the motherboard, unless FAULTY or unusually bad, does not really affect the system speed.
You'd need an old motherboard too, supporting Socket A/462 CPUs and DDR RAM - these can be hard to find and will not last too long due to their age.

Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop

I first starting having problems my not power up.  I turn it off from the switch on the PS and try turingit on again and it would take a couple times before it would boot up and turn on.  then after a week of that it finally wouldn't boot up at all.  It seemed that the PS was only powering the fans, so I bought a new PS to test it out.  Unfortunatley I live in a small area and the only store was a radio shack that had a 2 power supplies, but didn't have one that had a PCI-E plug to test out my GTS video card.   I bought it anyway thinking I could use my friends video card that does not need an additional plug in from the PS.  I got my computer up and running with my buds video card and the new pwoer supply, but I was getting a long beep from the mobo which in the past has been a memory problem for me(my mobo is very finicky about how the sticks are installed)  I took 2 of the 4 sticks and it booted up fine so it seemed to be a problem with the actual slots which were the two together closest to the edge of the mobo.  Now my computer is not booting at all no matter which slots I have and its not giving me any beeps.

I have ruled out the following...

Memory - all sticks worked fine in another computer

Harddrives - same as above

Power supply (old one) - obviously doesn't work because it will not power up my hardives or video card, but the newer (test) PS does power the harddrives.  too bad because I actually spent more purposly on that component when I did my build...

Video card - I can't rule it out because I have no PS available that has PCI-E plugs.  My computer is not working with my friends working video card so I do not suspect my 8800 gts is dead.

This leaves the Mobo or the processor and the Power supply. Can anyone suggest anything else?  If I buy a new mobo can I just plug in my system drive and all my original componets that work and not have to reinstall everything?
From the symptoms, my guess would be it's your power supply.  Try ordering a new one online.  Is the one you have under warranty?  If you're always using the On/Off switch on the PS itself, the switch might be failing - probably a cheapie switch, not meant to be switched many times. Thanks for the replys.  I am currently replacing my OCZ PSU that is under warrenty so thats cool.  Hopefully it will solve the problemGood luck!

And keep us posted! Have you resolved your issue?
So, you have been replacing components, moving components in and out?  Each time do you go into your bios to make sure that the computer has recognized the component(s).  Check to see if you have a jbat1 or a reset. If jumpered usually with a different color, like white of read, with one exposed prong and two covered.  covering the other two prongs for an instant resets  your cmos settings to factory default.  If you decide to replace your mobo you do not have to get the same exact board, just make sure that all your components are compatible.
When you turn your computer off by the power switch in the back of the power supply instead of using the power switch on the front of the computer, you are essentially interrupting the power source not turning it off.  Its the same as a power outage. You loose unsaved data that way.  You may want to check your RETURN TO STATE AFTER POWER LOSS.
When you only installed 2 out of 4 memory sticks, did you install them starting with BANK 0.  Also did you remove those same 2 sticks and replace them with the other two sticks, each time checking bios/cmos to make sure they are recognized.  Sometimes it takes more than one boot to be recognized.  However, they must be recognized before you proceed.  If 2 sticks are required to make a bank then you must insert 2 sticks at a time.  I hope you are practicing safe repairs/diagnostics. Wearing a ground strap, turning the computer completely off (DISCONNECTING power cord), discharging yourself before handling sticks, etc.
When you switched the ram did the second PAIR work in those slots?.  Then you plugged all four in and it didn't work, correct?  Did you try putting the ram in the first two slots (farthest from the edge)?  Each time checking to make sure the computer recognized the memory?
Do you have a cmos battery?I just got my power supply back. Well, it was part of the problem because my video card fan is being powered now where as before it wasn't.  my bios is still not booting up though.  I have tried moving the memory around, but still no luck.  usually the computer/mobo beaps on start up and then bios starts loading.   all the fans and components are being powered now with the new power supply.

I do wear a anti static strap whenever messing with the insides.  I do have a reset jumper for reseting CMOS but I am unclear as to how to do it.  I have messed with jumper settings on harddrives, so I am assuming I need that plastic thing that goes over the pins in order to reset it?  The reset has 2 pins and it says I have to short them.

I did remove the battery for 1 minute and put it back in, but no success.  It still will not boot up to bios.

Other then that I can't seem to figure out what else it could be.If you do a self test with only mobo>1 stick or ram > video card hooked up to monitor>and power supply>prossor & heat sink installed>Then short your power switch with a small screwdriver , if you get no signal from monitor I would say it is your Motherboard, this is assuming you are sure your power supply is good?SORRY THIS TEST IS DONE OUT OF THE CASEHow many times and what type of beeps does the bios GIVE?  Is it like 5 short 5 long, something like htat.  BIOS beeps is a message from the BIOS trying to tell you what's wrong.  I'm sure the more tech savvy people here can determine what the beeps mean.It is not beeping at allIf he cant see a display on monitor after the self test it is a hardware PBLM.Did you do the test i suggested?I am sure the power supply is good.  how do I short the power supply with a screw driver?Try to power-on your computer without your harddisks...

The very definition of pedantic

Does this happen to be a USB enclosure? because I've found they identify themselves with the same string used by the hard drive. For example, my external Hard drive is identified as a "WDC WD16 00AAJB-22PVAO" when installed internally. Similiarly, my enclosure identifies itself as a "WDC WD16 00AAJB-22PVAO USB device" with the drive installed.

Are these similiar to the "strange writing" your getting?Kind of; when it comes up usually it gives me Normal numbers like SA3_78492459, however now it comes up with weird symbols like *&^%$#^%SDA&%$&% ect.

Cheers Can you access the drive / have you tried it on another computer? I wonder if the sector where the info for the drive is CORRUPTED?

Alan <><  I got garble when I plugged in my REALLY old 46 MEGABYTE drive to SEE what I had on it. It didn't work, but it was recognized with completely random CHARACTERS, mostly square boxes.

As Broni Suggested a screenshot of exactly what it is being called and how it is presenting this information would be most helpful.

I believe the name DESCRIPTION passed back to the Controller when the Hard drive is asked to identify itself with the ATA ID command is actually stored on one of the ROM chips on the hard drive... more then likely the USB interface is munging it up before passing it to the computer. Is this a fully functioning hard drive ? ?
Have you ran chkdsk /r on it lately ? ?

Solve : BIOS Loading Intermittently.?

Answer»

I've been having trouble with my computer recently and wanted to see if there might be anyone on this forum with enough general knowledge to help me trouble shoot the problem so I might be able to repair it.

The problem:

My PC will currently load bios randomly upon bootup. 9 times out of 10 nothing happens. That 1 time is rare it will load bios.

So, step one I feel is to at least figure out why the computer won't load to bios everytime.

Further Problems:

I am continually losing input and output from my USB and PS/2 ports. Hard to fix ANYTHING, software related, when your only interface periphals are going offline.

How I believe the problem started:

I recent received an error message "Blue screen of death" telling me that I was experiencing a memory dump. I believe the memory dump was associated with either my chipset or one of my GPUs.

Sometime later I then experienced a kernel error in windows.

From that point on I've been experiencing the problems I have related.

What I have tried so far:

So far I have attempted to load to BIOS with all other hardware detached. This INCLUDES monitor, keyboard, mouse, modem, sound card, video cards, and hard drive. I even tested with only one memory stick in at a time.

I have also attempted to reset CMOS by temporarily removing the battery for a minimum of 5 minutes before replacing it.

I have attempted to format my hard drive and reinstall a clean install of my OS. However, the process can not be completed as I LOSE my ability to interface in the middle of the process.

So...currently I am wide open on suggested that might alleviate these problems....at least starting with the loading of BIOS.Have you cleaned and reseated the CPU and heatsink?

I gave cleaning both of them a shot. I haven't noticed any difference in the symptoms that are appearing. I double checked to make sure that there were no loose wires or anything of that nature grounding on the case. Are you saying that it might be possible that the motherboard itself is being grounded out due to contact with the case?

I'm still looking for other options I might not have thought of thus far. Quote from: dnarris on June 25, 2008, 08:31:09 AM

Yes, the motherboard itself could be grounding out on the case.

Did you use CPU thermal paste ?Replace the CMOS battery...
Temporarily borrow a PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...

You have to remove the Floppy in ORDER for the computer to boot up. Just to let you know...I did repeats to first error message, tried this in a machine almost exatly like this one, got the same results.Do you have the Windows CD?yes, but seeing as how the drive is dead I dont think it willl solve anything.

Solve : Won't wake up from sleep mode, and missing autocheck.exe?

Answer»

I've had this flat panel MONITOR since Christmas.  Last weekend my husband decided to clean up my computer.  Every time he touches it something goes wrong.  He managed to loose the bookmarks, wipe out my Outlook identity, and there are little gremlins all over the place it seems.

The biggest problem is that my monitor will not wake up when it goes into sleep mode.  I try everything, including turning the power to the monitor on/off.  The only thing that works is if I shutdown the whole system using the power button on the CPU.

Next is that when I start my machine it says autocheck.exe is missing (it might be autock.exe, someone MOVED my notes so I'd have to reboot to see it again).

Then there's the trouble with my security software.  It does the requested SCANS, says everything is good, but the little icon in the tray uses the "not safe" image.  We use Norton and CA Spyaware, and this is the case with the both of them.

What the heck did he do?!?!?  More important - what can I do to fix it?

And as with the car, he is no longer allowed to TOUCH it.  He is not the expert he imagines himself to be!

B9,I would say that your "LOCKED in sleep mode " will be solved in your "power management" section of "control  panel".From what i have read the "hibernation" option can cause difficulties as you are describing. However you have obviously taken the necessary step to forestall a repetition of the problem by virtue of your edict."keep your COTTON pickin fingers off my computers". This is exactly the methodology my own wife has taken and it works extremely well. So while your technology problem may still be "temporarily " there the domestic issue hopefully has been adequately addressed and will not be a problem in the future.goodluck and welcome to CH forums, truenorthThanks for the suggestion.  Maybe it just had its feelings hurt, but my monitor seemed to have recover.  As of yesterday it was refusing to wake up, and today it responded with no problem.

As for the marital repair, he's having a hard time disengaging from the subject, but I have assured him I will accept full responsibility should my machine crash and burn, as it will be at my own hand.

Low end graphics card, older CPU, and a fair amount of RAM.
If you're into gaming I would DEFINITELY recommend a new graphics card, that one is not very powerful at all.
Also, a new dual core CPU would help.
Vista will also sap your gaming performance compared to, say, XP, but I'm not recommending that you change your OS if you're happy with Vista.
However this isn't really about upgrading, this is about your performance, which does seem about right to me.

Solve : Speakers turn on but no sound?

Answer»

The speakers are plugged in, turned on, volume's up- but there's no sound. However, there is sound when I plug headphones in. I've been through the help pages already, but didn't know what to do when it came to the drivers (I don't know if that's the problem). Can anybody help? Is there a volume control on the speakers themselves?

What speakers are these - Old or new ones?

Have you double checked to see that they are connected RIGHT?

1) Verify the speakers are plugged into the correct port - both ends of cable.

2) Start>Control Panel>Sounds: Make sure that the sound isn't muted and that the volume sliders are 2/3 or more to the right.

3) Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager: Check 'Sound, Video, etc' - any yellow marks?

4) What PROGRAM are you using to generate 'sounds' - Windows Media Player, etc?Crafty: There is volume control on the speakers themselves and it's at it's normal setting. These are the old speakers. And the set-up looks right.

drmsucks: 1) They are in the right port. 2) Not muted, volume full power. 3) No yellow marks. 4) I've tried YouTube and Windows Media Player.

Have the speakers ever worked? With this computer?

Has anything changed - new hardware, new software that coincides with this problem?

Have you tried the speakers with a different computer?

Can you HEAR Windows sounds? Start>Control Panel>Sounds>Sounds Tab, click on a Windows Event sound and click on the > button to play.

Start>Control Panel>Sounds>Volume tab>Speaker Settings>Advanced>Speakers tab - is your speaker setup PROPERLY shown?

Start>Control Panel>Sounds>Volume tab>Speaker Settings>Advanced>Performance tab - try reducing 'Hardware ACCELERATION.'

I'm done!

Good luck! Please advise solution when you get it figured out.

Solve : Transfer old floppy disk files to new computer?

Answer»

12 years ago I put some files on a 3.5" FLOPPY disk.  My guess is that they were in ClarisWorks on my Apple COMPUTER.  I don't have an Apple computer anymore.  I have an old (7 years, RUNNING Windows 98) Dell laptop and a newer Toshiba laptop.  My Dell does have a disk drive, my Toshiba currently does not.

Could someone please help me as to how I can access these files on my computer?  I put the disk in the Dell and it asked if I wanted to FORMAT it.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you!

Solve : POST startup issue?

Answer»

Asus/Alife motherboard/CPU thing, Vista.

Computer powers up, fans run, CD TRAY powers on and can open and close, but no POST beep and nothing runs to the MONITOR. Stepdad claims he can't hear the Disk drive accessing.

So, any ideas, hopefully nothing that'll cost me a WEEK and 50$ to repair? It looks LIKE RAM problem. Run Memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/In addition to running a memory test, if you're confident enough in your abilities, open the side panel and check all of your connections. Remove and reseat all of your compenents to make sure they're getting a good connection to the motherboard.

the monitor has a pink color. everything that should be white is a light pink and I do not know what to do about it.   the computer is a emachines t1140 running xp pro, with a dell monitor.  does anyone  have any suggestionsReinstall video card driver?worth a try, it has integrated video but I might get a updated driver from IntelThey should have video driver at eMachines site. Download fresh driver, uninstall current one, install new one.Can you check the colour SETTINGS in your monitor's MENU (click the menu button on the monitor)Also check your monitor's cable. Make sure none of the pins are damaged or bent, and that the connectors aren't loose.is that a new monitor? i have encountered that same problem before on my office's monitor (Samsung  SyncMaster 551v) only that, that monitor is almost 5 years old!

i don't know on yours....as quaxo has said, make sure the cables are securely fastened and correctly connected. my monitor went pink once and it was because of a loose VGA cable. Quote from: HOMER on June 28, 2008, 01:26:52 AM

Same story with one of the projectors at school. Bend it slightly and the projector will go pink or yellow, Sometimes green.I agree with you guys, loose or defective cables can cause this kind of problem..

you can spot this problem by holding and moving the cable gently in any direction..
the monitor changes its color as you move the cable...

what i mean is that  i want to know if wannabe1's monitor is NEW?

my problem before is because my monitor is 5 years old or so, and because its an ANALOG monitor, internal calibration and alignment must be done to that poor old stuff....

i have replaced it though, not used it again.... I have also seen Electro Magnetic Interference do this. Are there any other eloctronic devices close to the monitor? Is it a CRT or LCD screen?hi
if it's CRT monitor , i have to say bad news.
your monitor may burn. ( 98% burn , 2% other event)
driver problem is vary far.
some say problem of cable.
for testing it ( cable ) sea the plug place of cable to monitor or vga PORT and search for rag.
if rag is in the middle of cable you can not see.
good testing for all cable is using a "VOLTMETER" and testing one by one of nail.

good lock

Completely inaccurate advice. The entire screen appearing pink wouldn't be from burn... especially a 98% chance.Hey, thanks for the suggestions.  I tried a third monitor and it works fine.  Maby I finally got a good connection.  I really don't know.It was most likely the cable or the port on your video card. Sometimes a little shifting of things gets them working again.

Solve : computer will not start ***DEAD***?

Answer»

My computer was SMELLING a LITTLE hot all of a sudden it went dead no nothing. Found out by testing my power supply that it was no good and was under rated and very very cheep for what I was running (came with the case combo) so I went out and bought a dual rail 650w installed it and nothing no anything dead. Check the new power supply yes It's got juice it"s fine so I plugged everything in and recheck all CONNECTIONS cleared the comos and still nothing would this be my motherboard or CPU that has failed? Note: there is no BEEPS no fans no lights nothing but I have power at the supply and the computer worked great beforeIf you know the new power supply is good, but the computer still won't start, it's most likely the motherboard I'd say. If you have access to another SIMILAR computer, you can test your components one at a time in it to be sure.

Solve : External Hard Drive ?? Renamed??

Answer»

I put a lot of my excess music onto my external hard drive and listen to it through i tunes.  For some reason my device changed names.  It was Western Digital (G:), but now it is Western Digital (H:) .  So now all of my music in iTunes is no longer linked.  Is there an easy way to fix this without having to go through each song/album and relinking it to (H:)?    Any help would be apprceiated.Go to the control panel and open Administrative Tools -> Computer Management. Then select DISK Management on the left menu. In either frame on the right, find your external drive and right click it. Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."

From there, you can assign it "G:" instead of "H:", provided NOTHING else is currently using G: as a drive letter.it WORKED, thanks ALOT!

Solve : Non working USB Ports?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Gateway GT4010 PC Media Center Edition with Windows XP.  None of the USB Ports work - in the front or back.  I found a couple other posts regarding this, but the answer usually starts with going to device manager to reset default USB settings.  I don't know what this means or how to even get to this device manager!  Help?
The computer is about 2 years old and the problem has been going on for about 3 months.I finally found the device manager and uninstalled my usb ports.  I rebooted and let windows revert to all original usb drivers.  It didn't work.  I didn't really expect it to since I haven't messed with the ports to begin with.  But I thought it was worth a shot....  Now what!? You've used USB in the past on that computer?

Have you accessed your BIOS settings to see whether USB function is enabled there?Yes, I have used the ports in the past for both my HP printer and plug and PLAY Finepix S700 camera.  I have had no problems with either printer or camera since for 2 years until about 3 months ago.  Then both abruptly stopped working, and the ports themselves do not recognize anything I plug into them.

I had attempted using a Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard set around the time the USBs stopped functioning. These were not plugged into the USBs, but instead the round end plugs, green and purple in the back.  I reverted back to the old corded ones (using same plugs) to no avail.  The help support for my camera told me the Logitech would have had no efffect on the USBs.  Was he incorrect?

And I am sorry for being completely computer illiterate, but what are my BIOS settings and how do I get to them?Ok - I have been poking around.  I looked up computer BIOS and found a site with examples.  I have PHOENIX - AWARD BIOS.  I got in and looked around, but could not find or figure out where I should be to check or change the status of the USBs.......  I'm sorry - I am trying to get as far as I can myself without annoying you folks who probably know all this backwards!  But I am still stumped.I don't think merely connecting a Logitech, or any brand, USB mouse and keyboard would cause USB problems.  However, I would not rule out the possibility that having numerous USB devices (printer, camera, mouse, keyboard, etc.) connected at one time might have caused more load on your system's USB capacity than it was capable of withstanding, and thus caused a general failure of your USB function, i.e. a hardware failure.

Back to my suggestion about checking your BIOS settings -  Here's a reference that might help give you some understanding of a computer BIOS: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bios.htm.  To access the BIOS, see Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS.  During startup of your computer, you need to hit a certain KEY to access the BIOS screen.  Visit the link for the key that applies to your model computer.  It will be Del or F1 or F2, etc.  The key may also be displayed on your screen right after startup.  Does your system display some text on a black screen when you first start it?  If so, look carefully for a line that says something like, Hit DEL for Setup.

Edit: OK, you found out how to access your BIOS. It is F2.  I got in to Bios and looked around, but could not find or figure out where I should be to check or change the status of the USBs.

I have a mouse and keyboard.  I turn on the printer occasionally when I need to use it, and the same with the camera.  Is this an unusually large amount of devices?  I have the Media Center Edition computer and the sales guy said I had all the supersonic capacity and capabilities.  Obvioulsly I don't know anything about computers - was I suckered?  I didn't think I had the system taxed, but perhaps you are right and that is the issue.

I am going back in to BIOS now to poke around again......  I just wish there was something in there labeled USB.....

And thank you by the way, for taking your time in trying to help me.If the problem is due to a hardware failure, a solution is to install a USB controller card in a PCI slot.  Here's an example of what I'm talking about:  SYBA PCI USB 2.0 4+1 port controller card Model SD-V2-5U - Retail.  This would add 4 USB ports at the back of your computer.  Thank you.  I am hopelessly lost inside BIOS...   LOL!!  I ordered the RECOMMENDED piece you suggested and will have my boyfriend install it as soon as it arrives.  Cross your fingers for me - and thank you again.carebear32c,While it seems you may have already opted for the replace some hardware approach i am not convinced that this is necessarily required (yet).Given that you do now know how to get into your BIOS setup i shan't go into that. Now once your initial BIOS page comes up-1.click on "advanced' 2. observe your "on board USB 2.0 controller" line and tell us whether it says "enabled" or "disabled" beside the line. If it says "disabled click on the word "disabled " which will change it to "enabled". Click on "Esc" on your keyboard (extreme upper left key) click on ESC again when the next window comes up. You will be asked if you want to quit and save your changes. Using your arrow left/right keys on your keyboard select "yes" and then hit the "enter" key on your keyboard. Then i would suggest restarting your computer and try something in a USB port and report back to us with your results. If your lucky (both with your choice of boyfriend and store of part purchase) he will be able to return the product for a full refund. goodluck, truenorthLOL!  Thanks so much for your replies.  I have absolutely ZERO patience, so the second I heard about this insert with new USB ports I had the BF go get me one!!  It was installed and working well by the time I read this.  The printer and camera work great and it is so nice to be able to download pics for clients and our website.  ( I am a pettsitter)

Truenorth - I will follow your advice on the BIOS after I am done working here and am ready to reboot.  It certainly wouldn't hurt to have the ports on the front of the computer working as well.

Really - a very heartfelt thanks for all your help in resolving this.  You saved me shelling out some big bucks for a repair guy.  I love this site.carebear32c,I realized after i posted my comments that i was dealing with a person that had only recently(for the 1st time) discovered how to enter BIOS setup and i did not go back to correct some erroneous guidance i had given. my 1st instinct was to say"oh well she is sharp"she'll figure it out. That may well be the case but i shall correct something anyway.Once you are in the BIOS i stated "click" on things--that wont work to NAVIGATE between items or or values in the BIOS (simply because you don't have access to a cursor via the mouse). You must use your up/down;left/right arrow  keys on the keyboard. However once you are displaying a value that you want to change as in the case of "disabled" to BECOME "enabled" then once it has been highlighted by using the arrows to get to it then click on "enter" and the value will change.Wouldn't want to you to try this and find out what i had said about "clicking" was not helping. If you run into trouble post back we shall arrive with bailing cans . truenorth

Solve : Updating computer?

Answer»

Okay, I know a fair bit about computers but i've never really looked into updating my system manually.

I have 4 RAM slots

A0 (RAS 0) : 512 (Single Bank)
A1 (RAS 2) : 512 (Single Bank)
A2 : Empty
A3 : Empty

So I know that I only have 1024 RAM

Is it possible to not only fill those 2 spare slots, but also replace the existing 2 with 1gig slots also, giving me 4gigs ram?

ALSO I know that RAM is very specific and each slot I have atm is DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333 MHZ) - [DDR2-666]

Can I replace these with any DDR model or does it have to be a PC3-5300 model or what?

Thank you for all the help in advance. Anything else I can/should add just say please

Also, if i want to upgrade my graphics card from NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE to the 8800 model is that just a pull out the old and plug in the new job?Not sure what RAM you have, but it depends on your os Windows,Linux ect...  Yes it should work for the card, probably would have to remove the old vid drivers.Sorry, i'm using Windows Vista.

Using PC Wizard 2008 this is all the information it gives me regarding my RAM

I DONT see the mention of the RAM type but it will support up to four gigsI thought this was the RAM type?

I dont see the mention of the RAM type but it will support up to four gigs

where did you read that it will support up to four gigs?I'm not completely sure what you mean by that (really have never ventured into this whole field)

but I think this is it

Product :   Aspire E380
Version :   R01-A4 I didnt sorry the board may not support up to four gigs but the os should allow it.  But you have two ram types there, thats why I wondered. That board support up to 4GB, but with a 32 bit OS you will not be able to use it all.
The RAM speed shouldn't matter as faster RAM will downclock itself to work if the board doesn't support the higher speed.
Go ahead and grab 4x1GB whilst it's cheap, prices will rise soon.
You have a PCI-Express X16 slot which your current card is in, so you can use an 8800 series card.
However your case looks pretty small so you may have heat issues with a more powerful card.

Adding/changing RAM and graphics cards is easy, it's just a case of removing the old graphics drivers, powering down the PC, removing the old components and adding the new ones, then powering up and installing drivers.

What's your budget for this upgrade?Still dont know the ram typeWhat don't you know about the RAM type squall?
Look up and you can see there are 2x512MB sticks of PC2-5300 RAM, or 667MHz if you prefer,I know that but he put ddr2 an sdram which are two differnt rams.No.
SDRAM is type of RAM, of which DDR2 is a sub-type.
Please get your facts right before making statements, you've been here long enough. Thanks for all the help that's been given. I've given myself a budget of around £200 but will probably wait a while for the graphics card.

To remove the old drivers is it just

Control Panel > Device Manager > Right click, uninstall or is it Right click, disable?

as my OS won't use 4gb I may as well just buy 2 1GB sticks and slot them in as well as my 2 512mb for a total of 3gb? or is this just not possible?Sorry not used to the whole ddr consept, even thoue my boards use it.  Its possible it will take all four slots thought.

Solve : Automatic Shutdown due to processor fan?

Answer»

Friends my system shutdowns automatically(sometimes). When i opened the cpu case i found that the processor fan is not rotating.
Sometime the fan rotates N stops and again rotate n stop and so on.
The fan is also making some sound like kir kir when i start the system for the first time.I have bought this system(wipro) 8 months ago.
What may be the problem ?Your system is SHUTTING down because the processor is most likely getting too hot WITHOUT the cooling provided by the fan. It sounds like the fan may have died or be in the process of doing so. A replacement fan can be purchased, but we'd need to know your system specs (particularly the motherboard and processor type) before a recommendation can be made on what fan to purchase.

Since the computer is only 8 months old, you might also check if the CPU fan is covered under warranty as well. Then you might be able to get it replaced for free.

If it comes down to you having to pay for and replace the fan, make sure you get a decent fan. Remember that in most cases when purchasing cheap computer components... you get what you PAID for.Yes i would upgrade to a better heat sink with fan. W hen you replace it make sure you clean the thermal compoand off of the processor & apply new to processor.amen to all those advices...

and if you are a little bit "TIDY" (cant find the correct term for this) , you can periodically open your case and check if your fan is not stuck with dirt and dust....so you can clean it by yourself(if you are "GUTSY" enough, anyway its not so hard and if you're careful) or send it to a professional SERVICE center for thorough cleaning of system.. Needs some few bucks for the budget,though....

hope this helps.....

P.S. For the LOVE of Computers!

Solve : Win xp pro help?

Answer»

I  have a computer running win xp rpo and all is ok but I was thinking I building a PC.

And I have a win xp pro CD I GOT a fue years ago for doing just this but I forgot the name of the store I got the CD from.

Is there a way I can findout if it is a 32 Bit or 16 Bit Operating System?

I remember the store I got it from did sell 16 Bit Win xp pro and 32 Bit Win xp pro  I just forgot witch one I got.

Can I put the CD in my my Drive and type a commnd to findout if the win xp CD is 16 Bit or 32 BitWindows XP is a 32-bit OS that also supports 16-bit programs.
Hope this helps. But I thought I remembered that when I got win xp pro the guy told me...we have a 16 Bit version and a 32 Bit version witch one do you want.

I MAY be wrong I can't remember but I am almost shure.

But what you are telling me is that win xp ro with Service pack 2.  never came in a 16 Bit version it just supports 16 Bit??Are you sure it isnt 32 bit and 64 bit versions? I've never heard of a 16 bit (or real mode) version of XP. XP Pro comes in 32 and 64 bit modes.  OLder applications run in 16 bit mode, and XP is backward compatible with most of these.Click Start and then right click MY COMPUTER. Now choose PROPERTIES at the bottom. This will tell you what operating system you have. Quote from: nymph4 on June 26, 2008, 09:08:39 PM

But what you are telling me is that win xp ro with Service pack 2.  never came in a 16 Bit version it just supports 16 Bit??
That's what I'm telling you.
XP came in 2 different 64 bit flavours, HOWEVER they were on a different code base.
It was never made in a pure 16 bit flavour. Then the win xp CD is 32 Bit or 64 Bit but this is not installed can I put it in my CD ROM Drive and some HOE findout if it is 32 Bit or 64 Bit?It will say either "Windows XP Professional" or "Windows XP Professional X64 Edition" on the CD.
It's very obvious which it is, there's no way you could get confused.
There's a very high chance that it's the normal 32 bit version, as the X64 edition is not all that common. It does not say anything but Windows XP Pro with Serice Pack 2.

It is a store CD so it should say 32 Bit on the CD and it does not.

But since it does not say 32 Bit or 64 Bit then is it a 32 BitRead my post again.
I said it will either say X64 edition, or it will not.
As it doesn't, it is the normal everyday 32 bit version.
This won't be stated on the CD as at that time, it was the only version available, there was no 64 bit edition.

Solve : emm386.exe and higmem.sys help?

Answer»

I have 2. things I need help understanding and they do not realy go togather.

First I just made a boot disk for a win98 COMPUTER if I ever need it and I did it from  bootdisks.com

As far as memory drivers it only has the file Himem/sys on it.  And I know this is a Driver for managing the High memory area so that is why that put it on the Boot disk.

But win98 uses XMS memory  so why did they not put the emm386.exe for managing extanded memory??

And secound.
Win98 uses extanded memory and that is what the file  emm386.exe if for it can manage all of the extanded memory block and turn off the EMS window  untill it is needed by an older program.

So it does booth so why idi they have Himem.sys  just for that 64 kB area right after the first MB    or was it for more then that??First and foremost- Extended memory and Expanded memory are different things. And yes, it is extremely annoying that their names are so darn similiar.

himem.sys is the XMS memory manager for extended memory (all of it, not just 64K, unless a specific switch is supplied, then it will only provide the 64K of Upper memory blocks). emm386.exe is for emulating expanded memory with available extended memory. Extended memory is the only type (aside from conventional, but let's not complicate this to thoroughly here) of memory usually installed in computer for the last few decades, whereas Expanded memory was found on add-on board that went in the ISA slots of early PCs that could only address up to 1024k (640k+384k HMA), and was accessed via a memory manager that usually came with the card. In order to access the expanded memory, applications needed a generalized method that was the same with each card vendors memory manager, and so they all conformed to a standard known as the LIM EMS(Lotus-Intel-Microsoft Expanded Memory Specification). However, after a few years, and extended memory became the norm, expanded memory just became a fading, err- memory.. However, the applications originally written for the memory couldn't use any Extended memory, since they conformed to the previously mention LIM EMS, not the newer XMS, standards. And so, Microsoft stepped in and provided emm386, or an Expanded Memory Emulator for 386 processors. What it does it it allows programs to access expanded memory USING the older LIM-EMS standard, even when the computer has no expanded memory installed. Instead, Emm386 turns around and uses some XMS memory when the application isn't looking (emm386 new that if the program found out it was actually using XMS memory, it would be 386 lashings!).

And second.
Win98 uses extanded memory and that is what the file  emm386.exe if for it can manage all of the extanded memory block and turn off the EMS window  untill it is needed by an older program.

As I just recalled previously, (FROM MEMORY, i might add )XMS memory and extended memory are different names for the same thing, which is just extended memory. (XMS=eXtended Memory Specification).

Also, as a side note, the Windows 98 boot disk has nothing close to Windows 98 on it, and rather is just a DOS shell, which requires no Extended memory anyway.

and lastly: is this in any way related to your post pertaining to NTLDR? do you plan to copy the NTLDR to this boot disk in order to repair a XP installation?  Because I can tell you right off the bat that won't work, since  the boot disk won't recognize the hard disk at all (if it is NTFS), making it IMPOSSIBLE to copy the file over.

Solve : HP LaserJet Printer suddenly prints in huge type (about 36 point or larger)?

Answer»

I've a Dell Dimension    C521  Desktop,  with Windows Vista Home Premium.

I recently formatted & Partitioned the hard drive,  and downloaded the proper   HP driver software to make this WORK with Vista.  All worked fine for  a week or so.

Then,  for no apparent reason,  the  HP  LaserJet 3050 PRINTER  suddenly shifted from normal printing to Giant sized type,  generating a dozen pages or more to print out a single page e-mail etcetera.

Everything it prints is multiple pages and giant type,  whether e-mail (AOL)  or any web page material.  Printer  has new cartridge and worked fine for a week before goint GIANT print.

I re-downloaded the Vista Driver from HP,  but it changes nothing.

I cannot seem to find an computer/control panel options to correct this.  Any ideas?   Thanks!  BruceRDucer

---------------Welcome to the forum....

Is there a reset button on the printer? Did you get any software with the printer? And what programs is it printing like this with?Is there a reset button on the printer?    There's a power switch,  which has been pushed 6 or 7 different times with no effect.

Likewise, the computer has been restarted 6 or 7 times SINCE,  to no effect.
---------------------------------------------------------

Did you get any software with the printer?

Yes, but the printer will not OPERATE in Vista with the original  drivers.   The Vista compatible drivers must be downloaded  from Hewlitt Packard, and I did that,   guided by their technician, and the printer worked fine for a week.

Solve : Sound becomes staticy?

Answer»

I noticed that recently the sounds on my COMPUTER have become staticy. If I leave my computer on for a while, (maybe about 12 hours) all sounds have static. I've tried listening with speakers and with headphones, and both have static. It only goes AWAY if I RESTART my computer. How can I fix this? (With out having to restart my computer.) Oh, and I have a Windows XPYou could try reinstalling the drivers for the SOUND device. Are we talking about a sound card here or onboard sound?

Why do you find it a problem rebooting after twelve hours? What are computer temperatures?I had this exact problem on my older computer- the problem turned out to be the sound card and my TV tuner fighting over a IRQ. Everything would be fine, until I ACCESSED something that used the TV tuner, then all the sounds would be static-y until I rebooted.

is this mother board good? some one say me soyo have a bad mother b

thanksI wouldn't think anything is WRONG with the motherboard....but anything is possible.

It would probably be more trouble getting and installing a new motherboard.

Can you reinstall the driver?
Did you do anything that might have done this? (installed new programs, ect..)yes i can install driver.

thanks for ya helpI don't think it is the Mother Board problem.

If you get a new mother board, you will have to reinstall the driver for that motherboard.

Have you tried downloading the printer / USB Port drivers? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 26, 2008, 09:56:56 AM

Solve : win xp core os files help?

Answer»

I am runding win xp and I thought of making my own win xp startup disk and it works.

I just copyed the files    NTL.DR and NTDETECT.COM and I only have one Operating System installed so I did not copy the file BOOT.INI and this disk works greate.

Now I wanted to try to make this same disk but copy the same files directly from my Win xp CD to the floppy.

Now I KNOW these files are on the CD in a folder called I think   1397  or something like that.

But if I put the CD in my computer and go to dos prompt can I just type a command  like..........D: 1397 copy io.sys A:

And it will copy the files I told you about to the floppy?

or is this not the command??The files are in the I386 folder on the XP cd.   Afaik using IO.SYS will not boot a non-dos based system.   These two files are not 'core os files' they are boot files only, the os is still loaded from the C:\WINDOWS folder.

The commands are:

COPY D:\I386\NTLDR A:

-and-

COPY D:\I386\NTDETECT.COM A:

Where D: is the drive letter of the cdrom.  (caps for emphasis only)

Good luck.If I want to copy the NTL.DR File from my win cd to a floppy I see the code is
COPY D:\I386\NTLDR A:

But if I ever want to copy the NTL.DR File back to my hard drive to replace a bad one would I use this code?

COPY A:\NTL.DR\C: or is the code
COPY A"\NTL.DR\C:\1386if you ever have problems booting (including a missing NTLDR) the best solution would be to use the Repair Option of Windows XP setup.

the syntax is

copy
you want to copy A:\NTLDR C:\
so

copy A:\NTLDR C:\

Also, you aren't attempting to copy all the files in i386 to the floppy are you? a CD-ROM holds 650-700 Megabytes, and a Floppy holds 1.38, so something tells me that won't work out too well.I am sorry I gess I shoud have explained my self.

If I want to copy the NTL.DR File from my win xp CD to a floppy to have a good copy you told me
COPY D:\I386\NTLDR A:    so just say I new that my NTL.DR File was bad on my computer over time I can just copy the good copy I have on my floppy. I know I chould just use the repair fuction on the win xp CD but I am just thinking of diferent was to do the same thing.

So what I ment was that if NTL.DR File was in the i386 Folder on the win xp CD then when it is on my Hard Drive does it still go in a folder called i386? If so the code for copying it from the floppy to the C: Drive would not just be
COPY A: NTLDR C:

That would just place the File out in the OPEN on the root directory. Or is it just on the Root Directory on the hard drive and there is no i386 Folder on the hard drive that it goes into it is just in that folder on the win xp CD?
Thanksyou can find your NTLDR file on your disk as is- in command prompt-
Code: [Select]C:\>dir C:\NTLDR /a
Volume in drive C is BOOTDISK
 Volume Serial Number is 7C47-B92D

 Directory of C:\

05/13/2008  07:05 PM           250,048 NTLDR
               1 File(s)        250,048 bytes
               0 Dir(s)  177,941,413,888 bytes free

of course your results will differ somewhat, but the file is there- you could just copy the file directly from the HD to the floppy, instead of the CD.

Yes, NTLDR is stored in the root directory of the boot drive, in fact it has to be, since it performs a similar function as DOS's IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS (and PC-DOS's IBMBIO.COM and IBMSYS.COM), which is when the boot-loader first starts up. At that point, it doesn't "understand" folders, and so can only run the rest of the OS boot process if the appropriate file is in the root directory.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but you are spelling it as NTL.DR, where in fact it contains no extension, so it is just "NTLDR", I'm not trying to be pedantic, it's just you won't find a NTL.DR file on your disk, or anywhere for that matter.

In any case- you've got the syntax down pat, and so should have no problem copying back and forth from a floppy to replace NTLDR. one question remains, how exactly will you access the floppy before the machine boots? Copying NTLDR to the floppy doesn't make it bootable, and in fact chances are you'll need to use recovery console (from the CD) to gain access to the drive and thus copy NTLDR over to it.

Quote from: nymph4 on June 27, 2008, 08:29:33 AM

I know I chould just use the repair fuction on the win xp CD but I am just thinking of diferent was to do the same thing.

I think you should now be able to perform this "back-up" type of system-proofing, but NTLDR is very rarely, if ever corrupted. And anything that DOES corrupt NTLDR would likely have also corrupted other system files. Besides, you'll need to use Recovery Console to copy NTLDR from the Floppy/CD anyway, and unless you INSTALL it as a boot option using "setup /cmdcons" for windows setup, you'll need to boot it from the CD anyway, so it just seems smarter to use the repair functionality since it will replace any and all corrupted system files. Thanks for all your help and I only typed NTLDR File as NTL.DR because I keep seeing it this way when I read about it.

But I did copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM to the floppy disk and then toock it out and turned off my computer and put the floppy disk in and turned on the computer and it acessed the floppy drive and toock like 5 sec and then booted to the desk top   so this is a boot disk right??

I meen it used NTLDR from the floppy to start  I chould here the floppy drive. And then it used the NTDETECT.COM for the hardware check right and then it got the rest from the boot drive.

Is this what happened and what I made?? Quote from: nymph4
I meen it used NTLDR from the floppy to start  I chould here the floppy drive.

Yes, and, if you are brave enough to try it, RENAME NTLDR on your hard disk and try to reboot from the hard disk.  You should get the infamous "Ntldr missing" boot failure error message.   Then boot from the floppy, your system should appear to boot normally and load Windows at which point the renamed ntldr file can be renamed back to NTLDR or copied from the floppy..

I have a similar floppy in my SOFTWARE recovery toolkit, mine also contains copies of Ntdetect.com, Hal.dll and Boot.ini files for speedy non-complex recovery purposes..  I also have a boot cd for systems which do not have a floppy drive, it works on the same principle as the floppy although it only has the boot files on it.

You may be interested in the boot/loading sequence here.

Solve : Monitor loses signal when accesing the internet?

Answer»

I have a new hp computer, with vista os, norton antivirus that is up to date, registry cleaner, up to date. Old dell 17 inch monitor.

The monitor, loses its signal when i start internet explorer.  At first it did this when the monitor was turned on and worked fine.  Now it loses its signal "shuts down" at random times also.

The pages seam to resize (gets slightly larger then smaller) when you go from page to page or maybe touch something on the page.

At first I thought this might be a virus but i keep my virus checker up to date and run it regularly along with spy ware.

so is this my monitor?  my graphics card?

It just started one day and has been happening every since.

It does not do this with any of my other programs as of yet.
I WOULD replace the monitor, if i thought it was the monitor but would LIKE some advice before I do that>
windows vista home basic
amd athlon 64x2 dual core processor
Dell p991 on nvidia GEFORCE 6150e   nforce430

Oh it does then go ahead and run after turning the monitor off and on again, till it desides to lose its signal again while using internet explorer.  I think messenger does not shut the monitor down tho.
Does it still do this in Safe Mode?

What Antivirus SOFTWARE do you have?

Did you download/install anything before this happened?Check that the monitor cable is securely fastened  - you may want to unplug the data cable (monitor cable) and re-plug.

Also be sure that you are operating the monitor in a mode that it supports - FREQUENCY & screen resolution.

Good luck!

Solve : printer question?

Answer»

just wondering have a desktop pc with epson printer and also have ROUTER just purchased lap top to RUN of router working fine should i be ABLE to run printer of LAPTOP as well as desk top any help would be great thanks.Well, if I understand that series of run-together sentences , you're asking whether you can share the printer connected to the desktop so that you can also print from the laptop?  Is that it?  The answer is yes.  This is done by networking the two computers via the router and enabling printer sharing on the desktop computer and then adding the printer in Windows Control Panel (PRINTERS and Faxes) on the laptop.

Solve : Send sound file directly to microphone?

Answer»

What im trying to do is send a sound file directly to the microphone. I searched for hours on google and all i found was recording from the microphone. I am not trying to record. I want to run a sound file, and it play to the microphone as if i were talking. I dont want it to play to the speakers

Ill give an example to try to clear it up:
Lets say i recorded myself talking and saved it into a sound file on hard disk. I dont want to talk live into the microphone, but rather play that file i recorded earlier into the microphone without it going to the speakers.

In addition to my example, ill add some theory to it:
I am talking in the microphone. I execute a sound file, but instead of sending it to the speakers, it mixes with my voice as im talking in the microphone. Either they GO to the sound card and mix, or a program mixes them, then sends it to the sound card. Then, it continues as normal and sends the sound to ventrilo (assuming thats what im on).

Anyone know how to do this?Welcome to the CH forums.

The first part of the quote indicates you want to use a pre-recorded file, the second that you want to talk into the microphone.   Do you need both options?   In my days of experimenting with audio input/output it was called "Talkover" where any input to the mixer from the mic would decrease the amplitude of the MAINSTREAM signal to ALLOW the Talkover to be heard then return the amplitude to its preset level when input from the mic ceased.  Just about every radio station in the world uses this type of audio mixing.

You neglected to give any details of your existing hardware/software, those will be considerations in what software mixer you can use.   There may be something of interest to you here..

Good luckOk i baught a new sound card, and its supposed to support mixing. But i cant figure out how to do it. I tried playing around with the PREFERENCES and options but it wont work.

Solve : Dual screen?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP. I had a spare screen laying around so I thought I might try dualscreen. I've plugged both into my NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX but only the one screen (the one I had before) works. All the guides I have read just say something will appear in Display properties>Settings. Do I have to update my drivers or something?I'm not expert in this field but can't you choose the dual screen settings when you Right Click the Desktop, go to Properties and hit the Settings tab? That's all I get when I go there.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7840/nosecondchoiceuy7.pngYes, Right Click the Desktop, go to Properties and hit the Settings tab.  There, you should see two monitors graphically REPRESENTED; they will be numbered 1 and 2.  Click on 2.  Then, check the box near the bottom of the panel; it's labeled "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".  Click Apply and OK.

If the your need to graphical representation in the Display Properties panel shows monitor 2 to the right of monitor 1 but your physical positioning of the monitors is the opposite, just drag monitor 2 to the LEFT of monitor 1 in the Display Properties panel.Tell us more about the monitors and video card.  Does the card have one VGA/D-Sub and one DVI port?  What type of monitor is your primary monitor?  Is it CRT or LCD?  Does it connect via VGA or DVI?  Which port is it connected to?  What type of monitor is your secondary monitor?

Did you have your computer turned off when you connected the second monitor?  If not, have you restarted your computer SINCE you connected the monitor?

Are you absolutely sure that second monitor works?

Here's what you should see in Display Properties:

Okay everything seems to be working okay now. One last thing: Is there anyway to make the desktop background on the other screen fill the whole page without changing my current resolution? At the moment it has a large blue border it.What were you expecting to see on the second screen?  Windows taskbar will remain on the primary monitor unless you MOVE it to the second monitor.  If you want a taskbar on each monitor, you'll need to get software such as UltraMon.

Quote
Is there anyway to make the background on the other screen the same without changing my resolution?
Yes, you can have the same background on both monitors.  I have my two monitors set at the same resolution, but I believe that will work, even with the monitors set at different resolutions.  You can also have separate backgrounds on the monitors.

Quote
... all I see is the desktop background with a blue border around
The width of that blue border will probably vary, depending on what resolution setting you use.  You may also need to use the buttons on the monitor to adjust the screen.

Your nVidia software provides some features for multiple monitors which can be enabled by opening nVidia nView Desktop Manager, from Windows Control Panel.  I have a few of those features enabled.  One of them is a BUTTON on any application title bar which, if clicked on, quickly moves that application's window from one monitor to the other.  I'll post a screen shot when I get back to my desktop machine; I'm on a laptop right now. I see you edited your post after I first read it and posted my previous reply.  Again, use the control buttons on the monitor to adjust screen so the full screen is used for your resolution setting. Thanks for the great help Soyabean, everything works now, I might have to try and find a free alternative to ultrmon though. I don't use UltraMon; I mentioned it as an option.

Windows will let you drag program windows from monitor to another.  To do this, the screen can not be maximized.

I have some of the NVIDIA features for multiple monitors enabled.  Here's a screen print:

The button where I noted it will move a window from one monitor to the other will do so even in maximized mode.  As previously mentioned, these features can be enabled from NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager, which is accessed from Windows Control Panel.

Solve : Power cable connectors?

Answer»

I am getting a new graphics card (GeForce 8800GT), and I need to connect it to my power supply.  The only unused connectors I see inside my computer are located on lines that are connected to other things.  One is about 4 inches before another CONNECTOR plugged in to SOMETHING (I think it's where some USB and other ports are), and the other is after a connector plugged in to my CD/DVD drive, just hanging there after a few inches of cable.

Like this:

Power supply------------------unused connector---------connector in USB, etc.
Power supply------------------connector in CD/DVD---------unused connector

Can those unused connectors be used as well, or do I have to get a new power supply with more cables coming out of it?

Thanks. You can use the open ones Quote from: JHenderson on June 25, 2008, 08:52:12 PM

what he said. any unused connector can be used. Thanks for the replies.  I wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to take needed power away from the other components on the line, or fry my computer, or anything like that!

Solve : A little help telling me how bad this computer is??

Answer»

Long story short, my uncle built me a computer about a year ago, and he finally got around to sending it last saturday.  The specs are as such.

> Motherboard - ASUS A8V-VM SE
> Processor - AMD 4200 X2 Dual Core
> Video Card - PNY Nvidia 7300GT
> Memory - 1GB PQI PC3200 Turbo Memory

I thought it sounded good at first, but after doing a little research, it seems like maybe it aint so great. My current computer (broken) has stock Dell 4600 mobo and processor, 2.8ghz, with 2gbs ram, and the best AGP card I could get.

It could run Crysis smooth on low settings, and Bioshock smooth on medium, so it wasn't so bad.

So I was curious, is this new computer a piece of junk that's gonna cost me a couple hundred bucks to upgrade myself?

I'm not looking for a world beater, I was just wondering if this computer would be at least equal to the Dell I had.  Well, if you are lucky you will be able to add the RAM from your old computer to the new one. And if your motherboard has an AGP slot you can swap in the old video card too. Go to the motherboard manufacturers website and find the manual to SEE if your old RAM sticks will work.I haven't looked up the individual components, but only thing that jumps out is the 1 gigabyte of RAM.

Have you tried the computer?I didn't think about adding the AGP from the old to the new, but maybe I'll do that.  The problem with adding the ram is there's only 2 slots on this new one.  I got 4 512's in the Dell, so it wouldn't help.

I haven't tried the computer yet, I should receive it in about 5 days or so.

Like I said, if it was at least equal to that Dell I had it wouldn't be so bad.  But If I have to spend a lot of money upgrading it, I'll be very disappointed. If you had the best AGP card (the 3850) then this new computer will probably suck at gaming compared to your old one.  What card did you actually have?
The CPU on the new one is much faster though.
I would recommend a new graphics card for a start - the 7300GT was a great budget card but it won't cut it with recent games.Well I actually had a Nvidia 7600, so I guess it wasn't the best AGP card, but it was pretty good.  Yeah I read the video card was pretty bad, but I also read that the mobo was even worse and horrible for gaming.  So I figured I'd need to start off with that. Is this a gift from your uncle? If it is, I'm sorry, but you sound like an ungrateful brat. Even if it does cost you a "couple of hundred bucks" to turn it into the kind of machine that (sound like) 14 year olds boast about to their school friends, then you got that grade of machine for $200. Not a bad deal. Sorry if I got it wrong, but that's how it came across.haha, trust me, I'm very grateful for this.  I've thanked him multiple times and realize this is a great bargain for me.  I guess I just thought I was getting something better, so I'm a bit disappointed.  I've been patiently waiting for about a year and a half for this thing, so I kinda had my hopes up.

I'm 22, and have no friends who would give a crap how great my computer is.  I've been using that old cruddy Dell for 5 years so I'm definitely not the computer bragging TYPE.  I apologize if I came off the wrong way, I guess I should have used a nicer word.

Like I said, I'm just trying to turn this thing into something a little better, so I could finally have a above average computer for once.  IMHO you have nothing to be disappointed in. What makes a computer "better"? You say you are not the "computer boasting type", but using words like "better" about computers makes me think you may have a touch of that disease. You are 22, get a job and buy a "good" computer yourself.

Ok mate you win.  Sorry if I came off the wrong way.  Guess I'll search for help somewhere else.It that computer is a piece of crap, what is my 350 Mhz AMD K6-2. Ahh so many memories, trying to force it play games, having to set process priorities for some games to get a decent framerate, then having the game crash and not be able to get back to the desktop thanks to the priority, Blue screens with any MIDI file.

I used that for seven years and only for the last two did I think I needed a new computer (mainly motivated by Visual Studio 2005). So then I got another "piece of junk" a Dell 4400.

This is all relative, I mean I paid almost 100 dollars for what I THOUGHT was at least a 500 mhz P2, but I start it up, and it turns out to be a crappy cyrixM-II. great, just what I need, a processor from a non-existent vendor.

If I had a computer like that, my first upgrade would be memory, and then Video card- all the games I play are much older and run in the high hundred FPS (FitzQuake,Quake 2, Doom legacy,JDoom duke3d....) so a newer Graphics card would only help with some of my newer games.OK maybe I came on a bit hard there, but you do not say what it is that you want to do, that your machine doesn't do very well. Without reference to that, you just sounded like you were drooling over spec sheets.

What I mean to say is that everybody's idea of what makes a "good" computer is different. I don't play --any-- games. Never have. Even so I do a bit of video encoding and it would be nice if it was -say- twice as fast as it is now. However I have a 3 GHz Pentium 4 Prescott core cpu so I am going to have to spend a lot of money to get a 2x speed improvement I think.

My idea of a "fabulous" machine would be a latest-model 3 Ghz plus quad core cpu, 4 GB or more of fast RAM, a Blu-ray burner, 2 x 1TB RAID hard drives, a 22 inch or bigger monitor, and a "stone dog" would be a 750 MHz AMD Duron with 256 MB of RAM, 20 GB hard drive, a 14 inch CRT monitor, and no burner.

I could probably make some use of a machine that fell in between those extremes, especially if it was nearer the top than the bottom.Well like I said, I might have used the wrong words to describe it.  I'm happy that I got this computer for FREE, but since I use my computer a lot to play some newer games, I am going to need to upgrade it to make that possible.

Like I said, I got about 200 dollars to spend and I was wondering what kind of upgrades should I give this thing so that it could run the newest games at a respectable speed.  I don't mean maxing out Crysis or anything, but at least being able to run it on medium would be nice.  Because that Dell I had could at least run Crysis on low, and I'd like to upgrade to something that would be a little better than that.

I'm willing to upgrade one part at a time also.  So if I need to buy a $180 motherboard first and foremost, than I'll do that, then wait to upgrade the other parts once I get some more money.

Hopefully that makes THINGS a little more clearer. My advice to you would be to spend that $200 on a decent graphics card.
To upgrade the CPU, RAM or motherboard you will need all three at once - you have a socket 939 motherboard and CPU with DDR RAM, whereas the new boards use S775 or AM2/+ and DDR2/3 RAM.
Use the cash on a new GPU, which is the bottleneck in your system, and then if you're still not satisfied, save up and upgrade the rest of your system.
Here are three GPUS, ranked in order from lowest price/lowest performance to highest price/best performance.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127362

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133219

The first has the best price/performance ratio, and the last requires a lot of space for cooling, but is definitely the fastest.
My own choice would be the 9600GT, and then save the extra cash for future upgrades.
Hope this helps.Ok, if you say a new video card will make the biggest difference, then that's what I'll go for.  I appreciate the links and the help.

Well, I bought this new chassi from Thermaltake (Armor, black). And was moving my HP Pavilion d4580 into it. When I finally GOT everything in place the screen isnt showing any signs of the computer starting up. It doesn't even register the mouse, nor keyboard. The graphic card is gettin POWER, the FAN is spinning.
The HDD's are not responding although the external "HP MEDIA DRIVE" is.

Motherboard: MS-7225 (Nash)
Graphiccard: nVidia Geforce 7900 GFXI'm not EXPERT in this particular field but are you sure everything is plugged in properly?

Solve : PSU 24pin?

Answer»

I just bought an antec quattro and an asus p5q pro.

the 8 PIN works fine on the motherboard but when i try to connect the 24pin it wont CLICK in.

what can i do other than trying to force it in?.. which is probably a bad idea.MAKE sure the pins are straight and make sure the connector is facing the correct way. it may require a LITTLE bit of force for the connector to click in.

Solve : So I think my computer just died...?

Answer»

Ok, so here is the situation.  I have a Dell dimension PC that is just over 3 years old now, so pretty old in computer years.  Anyways, its been kinda buggy lately but for the most part has run pretty smoothly, but now it has stopped functioning completely.  When I try to power it up, the power LIGHT turns an orange color.  Normal functioning would cause it to be lit green instead.  The power supply fan comes on, and there is a green light on my motherboard, so I don't think it is the power supply that went out, but the fan that would cool the CPU does not turn on and nothing else on the computer does anything.  Sometimes, the power light will turn green for about 1 second before turning orange when I power up the computer.  I've reset my ram, checked the connections, ECT.  Could this STILL be a faulty power supply or did my processor perhaps get fried?  FYI, it is no longer on WARRENTY so I don't want to run out buying a new component if that won't END up fixing it.can you explain what happened as in buggy?Yeah, sorry for not being too specific before.  Basically it would just freeze up and not do anything.  Usually it would happen after exiting an application.  I have a biometric fingerprint reader on my computer, and the light on that would also power off when this happened, which at first made me think it was just power supply, but as my power supply does turn on and the fan is on also, then maybe it was a motherboard problem or even a processor problem.which light is turning yellow? sounds like your describing the monitor LED...I had a pretty similar problem, in fact I made a topic on it.  I had a repair guy come over and use his PSU and it actually loaded up more than normal.  So you might wanna try a new PSU before you go and spend a lot of money replacing the mobo and such.

Solve : MultiMedia Pc Build?

I thought that I was going to start building this pc.  However I went to newegg, geeks,TIGER an couldnt find a socket d.  Unless that I'm not looking for the right name for the cpu I dont know what cpu I really should use.  We have recommened that I use a duo but wondered if I still couldnt get the D socket.  I have found a good audio card, few other things that I will post later an need a good video card a cup a board an then ram.  Which sounds like alot but I BASE it around the board its self so I know what to get.so what's your question? what motherboard? what cpu?what is your budget? Quote from: homer on June 18, 2008, 02:42:18 PM

what is your budget?
i think this the most important thing........socket d.  Unless that I'm not looking for the right name for the cpu I dont know what cpu I really should use.  We have recommened that I use a duo but wondered if I still couldnt get the D socket.   I have about four hundred spending cash not that Im going to spend it all at once.  Maybe get one or two thing then wait an get more. You are almost always better off waiting and buying everything at once. Prices of most computer components tend to go down in price. Then the newer PARTS cost more, Just like to have an idea then so I have it, mite get other parts that I need. There is no socket D.
I think you mean Intel's PENTIUM D line of CPUs, which use Socket 775.That mite be it, at least I thought at FIRST, appearntly I was right I think, does it have the pins on the board?  Socket LGA775 has775 pins on the "socket" which touch the underneath of the CPU.I thought so just wanted to make sure it was the right thing.Okay I did find it should I get at least a 3ghz or will a 2.8 work okay? What do you want?
A 3 or 2.8GHz what?Just if I shouldnt get 2.8 an be okay for doing this or go with something faster, which is always good. What CPU are you looking at?

Nope . 28 processes running all which i need. im kind of curious as to why you care if you get 125fps or not. above ~40fps the human eye cannot notice any difference. EX. 50fps will look the same as 150fps. Quote from: homer on June 22, 2008, 11:35:04 PM

I was wondering the same thing...

My HALO game runs at 30fps and it's fine.Actually, there is a difference.

While, consciously, you won't really notice a difference, your brain will. NVIDIA put out a demo which ran something at 60FPS on one side of the screen and 30FPS on the other. If you only watched one or the other, they both looked fluid. But when watched side by side at the same time, you could definitely see a difference. The human eye doesn't process visual information in frames nor does the real world provide information to the eye in such a way.

The highest proven frame rate that the human eye can perceive is over 200FPS in a test of flashing images on a screen for 1/200th of a second. Every image was visible and identifiable by the viewers... exactly how subliminal advertising works. While a constant stream of images (full motion video for example) won't be as noticeable, it can be perceived by the human eye at far higher rates than 30-40FPS, and the brain can interpret the fluidity. You consciously won't really notice a difference unless it's next to something running slower (like seeing 120FPS next to 60FPS in a way like NVIDIA demonstrated).

Anyway, enough with the A/V lesson... back to the topic...

Massive difference.....

Example:

You cant shoot any moving enmey on call of duty 2 on less than 125 fps.

I dont tend to go into the nivdia set up , i only change the screen refresh rate . :/ could you tell me how to get there please. In the system tray you should have an NVIDIA icon, right click it and choose "NVIDIA Control Panel".

Under "Adjust image settings with preview", choose "Let the 3D application decide".Yeah its on that mate.  just to  make sure you might want to run 3D mark 05 or newer to see if your running comparable with other machines. I'd use driver cleaner or some such program to delete and reinstall video drivers. Check your GPU temps with a fan/temp monitor to check the stress on the vid card.

After retuning from a few weeks away, I tried to turn on my computer and not lights, no fan, no nothing.  I tried changing power cords, plugs and still nothing.  It was working fine when I left.  I TURNED it off before leaving.  Any ideas?  Are you sure everything is plugged in?

Just to make sure, does anything else work in that power socket?Yes, I have checked the power source.  I am at a loss as to what to try next.  I have switched power cords, outlets, turned on and off the switch on the back of the tower.  Any other ideas?I cannot be sure but I think something may be wrong with your PSU (Power Supply Unit).
Is it POSSIBLE you can try another PSU?Help, how would I do that? This is a PSU:

It can get a BIT complication so I would suggest an experienced user do this for you.Thanks.  I just FINISHED reading online how to replace the PSU.  It does not look too complicated.  I have done a bit of repair.  As long as there are not too many supply plugs, I should be okay.  Any SUGGESTIONS on what brand or type I should buy?  It is an older computer, but has had many upgrades over the years.  I am running Windows XP, not sure of the processor speed, but it is about 3 years old since upgrades.I wouldn't ask me what PSU to get. I don't really have an preferences.
Something that cools well would be preferable. Thanks again.  You have been a great help.  I am sure I will find an appropriate one for my system.Good Luckif im not too late, i recommend a corsair PSU. they are known to be very reliable and they also come with a limited 5 year warranty.

Solve : USB to VGA adapter - Any Suggestions???

Answer»

Morning everyone.

I purchased this device a couple of weeks ago (not from this site but same product). http://www.buyextras.com/betusb20tosv.html

At work, I cannot get this device to work on my workstation.

Dell Optiplex 745 - XP Pro

I get the software installed, reboot then plug it in. Everything starts up like it should. I get the system tray Icon and settings under "Display Properties" can see it. But, every time I try and expand the desktop onto the other monitor it just flashes and kicks it back off. I have tried to expand the desktop, mirror it and default it to that device. Each time it just flashes and kicks back to where it already was. There are no even LOGS in event viewer.

I have tried it on one of my employee's computers and it works fine.

HP Compaq D530C - XP Pro

It also works on my home computers just fine.

Now, a third computer at work has the same results as my dell. It's also a workstation (compacted). I can't provide system info on that comp cause it's way ACROSS the building. I'm thinking it has to have something to do with installing the hardware on a workstation. Maybe it can't handle the device or something. I purchased this device personally so I don't WANT to CALL IT in. They have approved it but won't support it (can't blame em).

So, any suggestions? If I left something out please feel free to ask. Thanks in advance! You might want to try contacting the manufacturer support for that USB device.

In the mean time though, do you already have an extra video card installed in the PC that has trouble with it? Could be a conflict of some kind there.
Are you sure you have it plugged into a USB 2.0 slot?
Do you have the latest version of any drivers it uses? After reading the specs (I just ordered me one, thanks. Haven't seen one of those before), the first thing I would check is your USBspeed. It has to be 2.0 compliant. If the computer is running USB 1.0 then that would case your problem. Check that out and let us know. The bad part of forum sites, we posted at the same time. But at least we agree with each other. TheEmporer's is just better worded! Thanks for your help guys. I should have said some of this at first.

I have contacted the vendor twice via email form on their site. They will not respond (go figure....).

I did think about USB versions but am confident this crap Dell has 2.0. I have tried every USB port on the  computer.

I went to device manager and updated the driver then rebooted again. Still doing the same thing. it's the same version of driver off of the manufacturers site.

I'm still thinking it has something to do with this Dell being a workstation. It doesn't have any expansion slots (pci, pci e, etc...). It's very compact and basic. I'll keep digging. Let me know if you have anything else.  What model Dell is it?Dell Optiplex 745 - XP Pro

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=1W85DC1&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P4_745&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=Well according to the specs you have 2.0. I did notice that the front ports be be in some kind of have cocked disable mode. Make sure you have them plugged into the back of the machine. If that doesn't work and you really want to use this, maybe IT could swap your computer out for a model you know works. Beyond that I could not find any real specs for the device that could help figure out what is going wrong.

Sorry.

ChrisI agree Chrisxs5. I have tried the back ports as well. I think I will need to swap my computers. I called in IT yesterday just to make sure I wasn't crazy. After an hour they quit (haha). I know what computer I can get here at work to use this. It's just one monitor would be CRT and    I don't want CRT. LOL

But, I may have to suck it up. I'm just going to blame Dell.

Ok, case closed. I really appreciate everyones help. Wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.

Cheers!Best of luck to you and thanks for pointing out the device, 2 other people here at the office have ordered one as well, so we cant wait to play them ourselves.Glad to spread the word. I hope it works out better for you guys.

Solve : USB HD doesn't work after video card install!?

Hello People!

I have a problem I haven't been able to SOLVE, so I thought I would let the forum see if they could help me.  I have a amd xp 1200 cpu, 768mb ram, 20gb HD, 80gb HD, 250gb usb HD, biostar geforce fx5200 video CARD, running xp pro 2002, sp2.  I recently INSTALLED this video card and now I can't read my usb hd.  (I also upgraded to firefox 3, but don't think this is the problem)  I upgraded all my DRIVERS and reinstalled everything but still no usb HD.  It works fine with my old cirrus logic 2mb video card but when new card is installed it doesn't want to work.  (old card was pci and new card is agp if it matters)  External drive shows up in my computer but can't access it because of an I/O error.  Device manager shows everything is fine.  I have tried new drivers, old drivers, installing, reinstalling bios upgrade and everthing else I could think of but the usb hd is inaccessible with the new video card.  Any suggestions or advice is deeply appreciated!!!If you have any data on the drive, COPY it to another location then try reformatting the drive on the problem computer.

Solve : TV as computer monitor?

Answer»

My LCD HD TV apparently can be used as a computer monitor. Will it serve me as well as a dedicated LCD computer monitor without a tuner or will the display quality be inferior?lcds have a slower refresh rate which will mean ghosting with games and stuffIf you wish to use the lcd tv for your computer monitor (ASSUMING it has the correct connections) it will work very well. The display will not likely be inferior.
To be sure, what is the model and brand? The TV is an LG 26LG30, 26" LCD, 720p, 1366x768px native resolution, 5ms response, 5,000:1 contrast ratio, 1 PC input, 2 HDMI inputs,  and the usual component, S-video, and composite inputs. That will work great for a computer monitor. Although I personally wouldn't do it because of it's lower native resolution, (I like higher resolutions) it will work fine for anyone else.
i hate it when people lie to me and told me a lcd has a slower respons time...  but that will make a great moniter LCDs actually do have a lower response time than the old crt monitors. Some gamers even claim to notice the difference, but I'd rather have the extra desk space than the ability to pull out 3 extra fps on Firefox3. o just crts well of courseI have a 61 inch, 1080i, HDTV, which I frequently use to display output from my computer.  However, I use an HDMI output from my graphics board, and I output 1080i resolution from the PC to my A/V Receiver, which then switches between several HDMI sources to the TV.  I'm even considering buying an internal Blu-Ray DVD player (at less than $200) to INSTALL in the PC, for use only in displaying HD movies on the TV, SINCE a standalone Blu-Ray player would cost close to twice as much.

As a cautionary note, I would recommend against taking a VGA output into a "PC" input on your TV.  VGA output, in my opinion, is simply not worthy of display on an HDTV, at least in the case of most TV "PC" inputs.  If you're serious about display of computer output on HDTV, get an HDMI enabled graphics adapter and have at it.  Otherwise, again in my opinion, it just ain't worth it.I honestly have never noticed a difference between vga and dvi on a computer. I've never seen anything in hdmi, but have trouble believing there is much difference.I actually think games look better on LCD screens (of the right size/resolution ratio).

I don't even like to work on CRT screens anymore. They annoy me. The image doesn't feels as sharp and clear to me. Quote from: michaewlewis on June 25, 2008, 09:53:27 AM

I honestly have never noticed a difference between vga and dvi on a computer. I've never seen anything in hdmi, but have trouble believing there is much difference.

Well, of course, to see a significant difference, it's necessary to have both a graphics adapter and a monitor capable of high resolution.  The display I'm working on now (with DVI input) is 1440 x 900.  Before settling on the DVI input, I tried the VGA input, and there was significant difference, in favor of DVI.  The only HDMI output I use from the PC is to my A/V system.  There are several reasons for that choice - it's the highest quality video and sound which I can get to the system; it carries video and sound in one cable; and I can match my HDTV's resolution capability.  After saying all this however, I recognize that some persons still PREFER tubes to solid state, vinyl to digital, and (probably) VGA to whatever.  Finally, with respect to VGA output, the biggest degradation of signal quality I see is in sending VGA output to an HDTV - not to the computer. In my experience, VGA to the PC looks much better than VGA to HDTV.
I use vga to run my 22" lcd monitor (Acer)at home at 1920x1200 resolution. At work I use dvi to run a 24" lcd (Dell) at the same resolution. I haven't noticed any difference at all.  It may be that, because I'm not a gamer, I lack the ability to fully appreciate all this.  Most of what I do with the PC is video and auditing editing, with a little networking and database thrown in from time to time.  I do enjoy high definition TV, and HD DVD and Blu-Ray, but I suspect that serious gamers deal with much higher resolutions much of the time; perhaps picking up the ability to be more discerning thru the process.

Solve : Graphics issue in linux!!!?

Hey, I am running a dual-boot configuration on my desktop with 64-bit Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux 9.10. EVERYTHING works fine and all, except in ubuntu it won't let me go with the extra visual effects. It will only let me let me go with NONE, which I am already BORED with. I was previously using my onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU, but now I bought the XFX Radeon HD 4350 graphics card to use with Windows, but after that is when I installed linux on another partition. I'm wondering if linux is not RECOGNIZING my graphics card, or if I just need to install a video driver. If that's the case, I would LOVE to know where I can get this driver. Btw, my desktop doesn't have internet connection, but I have a LAPTOP which I use wirelessly. Thanks Maybe some of these links may help, give a read and look:

Solve : General hardware problem (is my laptop just a dud?)?

Answer»

Hi,

I BOUGHT a Dell Insiprin 17R last week. For the first several days, Windows 7 froze multiple times a day. I contacted Dell TECHNICAL SUPPORT but nothing they did helped matters. So I switched to Ubuntu (dual BOOT), figuring that maybe the Windows install just was messed up. But there's been strange stuff going with Ubuntu too--twice the system checked for system errors when it BOOTED; once the clock applet failed and once I could not log into my account (I had to have the system again check for errors, and that at least got it so I could log in).

I can't think of what specific part might be causing a problem here. Is the laptop just a dud?If it's still under warranty i would take advantage of that immediately....I wouldn't even worry abut what part is bad, I'd just send it back to Dell for a warranty replacement.

Solve : New motherboard install?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

This week I got a new motherboard to replace one that's had some problems with the USB controllers. I want to install it today, but I just have one question.

Last YEAR I finished my first build and made the stupid decision of not re-installing Windows. This time around I have 2 hard drives to work with and 3 different PARTITIONS. One of the drives is just for storage and it's only one of the partitions. The second one has TWO partitions, one for the OS and some programs, and the other for all of my GAMES, but they're still both on the same drive. Would I have to reformat the entire second drive, or could I just work with the OS partition alone?

I was thinking I could just work with the OS partition, but I'm not 100% sure. It would be a pain to backup everything if I don't have to.

Thanks!Just the OS partition. And depending on the OS, all you may need to do is a repair install - THOUGH a clean install after a mobo replacement is the wisest choice. If you do a clean install you will, of course, need to reinstall all programs.Alright I thought so. I'll probably just do a clean install, reinstalling the programs won't be a problem. Thanks

(PLEASE don't TELL me to clean up my computer. i already know how do all that and been doing for years.)

i have had this computer like in 2001 or something like that only thing i have ever upgraded was power supply because it blow out was at 200w now 300w

i put my dxdiag information in the attachment  since it's a a lot of information

if you need any other information just let me know and where to get it

I'm no computer expert. but not a idiot with them.

i need know what i should purchase and what will work with my system

thanks for your help...

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]other question. since my computer is older then most computers. would it just be cheaper just go ahead and buy a tower?I was going to suggest buying a cheap video card to upgrade the integrated graphics (which would probably be enough to keep you going for a while) however it appears your MOTHERBOARD does not have an AGP slot, and certainly doesn't have the newer PCIe slot. Upgrading RAM may be an option, but the beyond the 512mb already INSTALLED, the integrated graphics will still severely limit the performance.

Because of this I can only suggest buying a new(er) tower.

Good Luck

Solve : Link 2 hard drives?

Answer»

I have two 100G hard drives. Drive C is almost full and Drive D is almost empty. I would like to find out how to link the two HD so that the files seamlessly flow into Drive D as C fills up.  I RUN Vista on a 64 BIT HP pavilion laptop, processor 2Ghz, 2 GB RAM. How do I link the 2 hard drives so that they work as if they are one?I've never DONE this so I can't comment on how effective it is, but I found this after a quick search http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/combine-2-hard-drives-into-1/86177.html. So it appears that it is possible, using dynamic disk management. Or you could set up a raid array.
Be aware that doing this may minimise your ability to recover data from either drive.

Good Luck.I'd highly recommend the RAID option, especially if you can get a third 100GB drive (for one of the RAID levels with REDUNDANCY (RAID-5? I don't remember). Dynamic disks are... well, DIFFICULT to manage. everything works alright as long as all disks remain in tip top shape, but if you lose a single disk you lose all the data in all the disks (if I remember correctly). At least with RAID, you have a protection mechanism.

Also, with Dynamic disks, it's a software mechanism implemented by windows- for RAID you can often configure a hardware solution.
