Solve : computer keyboard?

Answer»

When BOOTING up my computer each day, I need to hold down a key until it "CLICKS" about 15 times, then it "beeps" before the keyboard will let me start typing ANYTHING. Have to do this every time the computer is turned back on. WOuld like to know if there is a way to undo this
ThanksIs it a USB keyboard?

Or is it the "old-time" PS/2 keyboard?

Have you tried unplugging and re-plugging in the keyboard? If it is the old-style PS/2, do not unplug or plug it in when the computer is on. Make sure the power is off.

USB is more forgiving -- you can unplug/plug in USB while the power is on, though sometimes, USB keyboards get strange, and best to unplug/plug in while power is off, then restart.
It would be helpful if some more information was given. The type of computer, model and AGE. And any information about the keyboard. Is there a SWITCH on the bottom of the keyboard?

Solve : Need HDD for old computer?

Answer»

I have just gotten an old Dell workstation 670. It came with a 36 gig 10k 68P seagate. That HDD has been removed. I was wondering if this system can have a non SCSI drive installed in it. All the SCSI drives I can find are small and expensive. I don't need a ton of storage3-500 gig will do all I need. Is there an adapter or something I can use?

What's in it.
2x 80546K 3.8G, 1M, XEON Nocona 800EQ processors.
2x DIMM 1G, 400M 64x72, 8, 240, 2XR8 Memory cards.
2x DIMM 512, 400M 64x72, 8, 240, 1XR8 Memory cards.
Cable hard drive SCSI, 4 drop.
Nvidia Quadro FX3400 video card.

Not that I have any CLUE as to what that all means.
I know it's old, but I'm just hoping to use it for my wife and kids to surf the internet and get them off my my other system. Any help would be much appreciated.
Check if there is a SATA or IDE port on the motherboard:

IDE:

SATA:

If not, you should be able to get a card that you can install into one of your motherboard's PCI/PCIe slots that will give you either IDE or SATA ports.Dell site says:
Quote

Integrated Serial ATA/150 w
Optional Ultra 320 SCSI con

Edit: on eBay drives from 20 to 60 GB SATA SELL for under $60, new, shipping about $10 or less.
That looks like a machine worth keeping. It can run 64 BIT XP ProThanks for all the info. I found 2 SATA ports on the mother board. Helps to have build schematic inside the system.

3 more questions.

I saw a hard drive at the dell site that said SATA 600. Is it the same or should I look for regular SATA?

Can I unhook the 4 drop SCSI cable from the motherboard if I go to SATA?

I have seen XP 64 bit full version on line, but it says an operating system is required?? If I installing an operating system what do I need one for.Quote from: wallerus on June 23, 2011, 01:24:06 PM

Yes

You need Operating system to:
Get on Internet
Play games
Watch Netflix

Almost any current Windows OS would work, but you either need to buy a legal copy nor get the OEM version from DEL, if that machine has COA sticker on case.Planned on buying a copy. Don't want all the Dell stuff with it. Got a copy for my home machine I love running just plain windows, but it is 32 bit and I want to run 64 on this one. Just trying to make sure I do it right. I don't do pirate.

I thought IDE drives had to be jumpered to either master, slave or cable select in order to work properly. well it was working haha for atleast a year or 2.. i just had them on same channel and the 40 set as masterQuote from: lectrocrew on September 19, 2009, 07:49:09 AM

That's true. However, on some drives, Master is no jumper.well out of the ide's the one WITHOUT jumpers is the 80 and IM pretty sure it is bust.. so now the problem is getting my pc to work without it

Solve : are these parts any good?

Answer»

It's too old. You can turn it into a FIREWALL but many consumer computers of that TIME LACK ethernet because they used dial-up. I had a system like that but I added a 10/100 Ethernet controller.Thats a waste for a firewall. A firewall will RUN fine on a 66mhz cpu and 16mb of ram

Solve : Flash drive quality?

Answer»

Can you buy a poor quality flash drive? Like everything else, flash drive prices vary as much as or more so than other computer related components. I’ve seen 16GB flash drives priced from $15 to $50. Are there many differences in the quality of flash drives?

I may have posted this in the wrong place. Sorry!Sure there are. Just stick with a name brand or Google the one you're thinking of and read reviews. Is the PNY Mini Attache a quality flash drive?

ThanksCheaper ones tend to be slower and less physically robust.

Quality or performance? Qualities are all about the same, performance varies greatly.Quote from: Computer_Commando on June 24, 2011, 10:54:21 AM
Qualities are all about the same, performance varies greatly.

What do you mean by this?

I would consider performance to be a considered when evaluating the quality of a drive.

I've bought several different brands of flash drive:

A SanDisk Cruzer Mini (256MB)

this served me well after it was given to me; even by that time it's labelling had faded off and it was unreadable. It finally gave up the ghost one day and took all of my applications I was working on at the time with it. (curse my "I'll do it later" policy towards backups). It became exponentially more unreliable until one day it started being detected as a tablet.

SanDisk Cruzer Micro (256MB), another Cruzer Micro(512MB), and two other Cruzers (8GB each)

These have worked as well as is to be expected. No problems, acceptable speed.

Kingston 8GB traveldrives, and a 2GB as well

Also acceptable performance. And considering they only cost 10 bucks each it was QUITE a good value.

The memorex drive works very well too. In fact, in a crappy one-off program I wrote to test their speeds it was the fastest even after several tests. it is "only" 512MB, though, which isn't enough for some of the files I want to haul around.

Basically, just avoid getting "No name", or store brand flash drives. Also be careful because some smaller drives are misleadingly referred to as larger sizes- 256MB drives being sold as 8GB drives, for example- which show 8GB of space but only allow 256MB or somesuch to be stored. If it's a brand- Kingston, PNY, Sandisk, Memorex, etc then you can usually trust the label.

If I was in your situation, I'd probably go for the cheapest "name brand" that I recognize/have experience with. Either way as the prices increase quality generally rises, until about HALFWAY when you are starting to pay for their MARKETING campaigns.Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 24, 2011, 11:26:08 AM

These are deliberately manufactured fakes - I believe most come out of China. Avoid suspiciously cheap 64 GB drives in Ebay.
I guess it's a matter of semantics but I intended to mean performance when I used the word "Quality."

Thanks for the feedback.Quote from: shortride on June 24, 2011, 08:28:47 AM

Thanks
PNY is a quality name. Don't over-think this - it's just a flash drive. If you can get a good price on the PNY that's fine. That's what I thought until I got a SanDisk 16GB that is so slow on the writes as to be unsuable for anything but long term storage. Read speeds are acceptable. The packaging did say "suitable for large video files". Now I know what that means! My 2GB SanDisk is 3X the speed.

Solve : gateway laptop: not recognizing cd/dvd rom?

Answer»

okay.. IM trying to help my cousin out with her laptop. she was having some sort of issues (not related to this one) and sent it in to GATEWAY to be serviced. she got it back around june and noticed her cd dvd rom was not being recognized. when she puts in a cd, nothing happens. i looked under device managers, and its not listed. under my computer, all that shows up is the hard disk drives c and d (recovery?). in the bios setup though, the cd rom IS listed as follows: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40N (PM). this is a gateway laptop model ML6732 running vista. i have tried the upperfilter/lowerfilter microsoft fix, does not work.

ill add that when i got the laptop and turned it on today, under my computer, the dvd rom WAS showing up. once i put it in a cd, it disappears and does nothing.

she called gateway, because this happened after they serviced her laptop, they will not help her. they were also supposed to send her a recovery disk which they did not. Remove the DRIVE and re-seat it...
There should be a release botton next to it.

Do this with the battery REMOVED and power unplugged...okay, i ran the laptop in safe mode just to see if the drive shows up there and what do you know, it DOES. i put in a game DISC just to see if it reads it and.. it does. i restart the computer in regular mode, and the drive shows up under my computer but as soon as i put in a disc, it disappears. im thinking its some program blocking it or something crazy. i guess its a needle in a haystack but ill keep trying. haha.

Solve : laptop?

Answer»

im looking to buy a new laptop price range £350 to £450 could anyone recommend a good laptop in this price range.
ALSO could anyone explain what the abbreviation VHP means.
Thanks for any help jhaddVHP? In what context?

My search yielded THIS.

VHP is probably VISTA Home PremiumOr Very High Protien...Depends what you want your laptop for and how long you expect to go before replacing it, for example you might buy a LOWER spec Dell and have the peace of mind it will probably have a longer life span than say.. most Acers. But an ACER gets more bang for your buck.

A friend of mine recently recommended Novatech where you can build your own rig and they have a pretty solid price range.

Also you might want to make sure you get a new laptop with the free windows 7 upgrade (I say free it NORMALLY costs £15 handling cost which saves you about £30 if you were to upgrade).

Solve : nothing on startup?

Answer»

I have a hp7850 pavilion which sat on the floor for a year or two. I was going to give it to a SCHOOL but after plugging it in it just turns on and nothing else. The light comes on that its on but nothing else happens. I can't turn it on or off with the start button, also there is a cd-rom light on but that will not open or close or do anything either. The only way to turn this on or off is to pull the plug or plug it in to get a light. Please help
JoeCheck all connections, if ok then i would first point the problem as the POWER supplylostmymsdos, Are you holding in the "off" button long enough when you are attempting the SHUT down--sometimes it can take about 10-20 seconds ? Also you should check that all internal components are securely connected--particularly the HHD and RAM connections. While you have the case open clean it out if it looks dusty. Also at that time ensure that the fans are running --the CPU fan and the PSU fan. Don't open the PSU cage. Why has it been "sitting" around that long? Did you stop using it because it wasn't working properly? truenorthThanks for the replies --I set the computer aside because I upgraded to a newer computer---I am holding the startshutoff button in for 20 sec's plus--I removed the cover and its very clean inside---The fans are working--I'm wondering if the harddrive is frozen---This was a computer that was on a lot--Any more ideas out there---One more thing---When I plug in the computer it is on automatically--That in itself is strange--Thanks again Joe I would start from scratch in oder to illiminate possible hardware failures.
Is it a PSU problem, RAM, CPU or Motherboard? Check these first. How?

Disconnect A/C power from systems unit. Disconnect your HD and optical drives and FDD, card readers, mouse, keyboard . Reconnect the power supply and observe immediately that the CPU fan is operating, the case fan is turning as well as the PSU cooling fan. If any of these are not working then switch off immediately and check connections. Is there a single "beep" from the internal speaker." Is there multiple "beeps" from the speaker? If so check the beep codes to see what they relate to. Are there any messages on the monitor. If there is nothing at all, is the monitor receiving a signal from the system, some will have a orange light for power on and this will change to green when a signal from the system is received. Have you checked the CMOS battery? (3v) If you are handy with a volt meter, check the voltages of your PSU especially the 20-24 pin ATX power connector. Is the power switch on the FRONT of the case U/S? Check by disconnecting it from the motherboard. Use a screw driver to short across the PWR switch pins to fire up the system. Also check to see if you have anything in the DVD drive which might be preventing the system powering up. Look at the front of the drive for a small pin hole and if there is one, use a PAPER clip to release the mechanism. If you have a spare stick of RAM, replace it with the one fitted and try again. If the Power supply is defective you will have to replace it. CPU might be the next suspect and finally the mother board. If the system shows signs of life in these basic checks, reconnect each of the drives one by one and try each one at a time. If you have another system in use you can always check a suspect hard drive in that system. These are just a few thoughts which might help. Above all check and recheck your connection and the seating of power cables, Ram and CPU. Even if the problem is not solve you can illiminate many of the usual suspects. Remember to protect against ESD when handling sensitive components. Good Luck.

Solve : New Case.. Compatible??

Answer»

Hello CH Community ;-),

I am moving my custom computer to a new case (from an NXZT that I was unable to identify to an antec 900).

I was doing some pre-purchase research, and I noticed something (actually, two somethings) that could stop me from buying the new case.

1. I am unsure whether I will be able to hookup my motherboard to the front panel inputs. On the front panel there are 2 USB, 1 firewire, 1 MIC in (Pink), and 1 Audio Out (Green) connectors, as well as a power and reset button.

I checked the manual, and it seems like I (think) can hook up the USB's, but not sure about the firewire, or two audio ports.
Information on the audio ports can be found on PAGE 27 of the motherboard's manual. Here is a link to the PDF version: http://america.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/Manual/motherboard_manual_ga-m57sli-s4_e.pdf.

2. The metal plate in the BACK of my current case has openings to allow access to every connection/port on my motherboard. Looking at some pictures of the back of the case online, it looks as if my motherboard will not match up at all with the plate they have. So, my question is, can I pop out the metal plate on the case I have now, and put it in my new case?

Here is a picture of the part in question; it is outlines in red: http://i34.tinypic.com/wboz2q.jpg

Thank you for any help with this, I would like to buy the case tonight (perfect world sentiment), but not without being 100% sure that the motherboard will fit and all the connections will be accessible, the front panel will work, and the case will work as it should.

All help would be appreciated,
nNJZ
(formerly Image)Yes, it should pop out and fit the new case no problem. Quote

Thank you for the confirmation. It was what I was hoping for, but was not sure. (I would have hated to find out that my assumption was INCORRECT after purchasing the case).

It should work fine. Why are you moving cases anyways?

I bought a custom computer, but I don't like the case. It almost looks like an alienware case, but is manufactured by NXZT.

I'm buying an antec 900 ($50) that was used for 3 weeks and is supposedly in perfect condition, with original packaging, hardware, mounts, manual, and EVERYTHING else that came with it. (I have yet to confirm this, but I am not buy it until I see it with my own eyes).

Thanks for everyone's help btw. I now know that the backplates pop out, specific plates go with specific motherboards, and I need to take the plate I am using now out of my case, and put it in my new one.

Solve : Reccomended fan for this board and processor??

Answer»

This is my first time posting here. I'm much more software and programming knowledgeable than i am with hardware, but i can manage usually. Anyway, I have a slight problem:

So, I am replacing a BROKEN fan for a pentium 4 processor. I think it's a 2.4, but can't remember off the TOP of my head.

Anyway, this is the fan I am removing:

http://www.cwc-group.com/c33224.html

It's a c33224 intel socket-478 fan.
Normally, i'd just pull that out, order a new one of those, and put it in. Unfortunatly, it's not so easy this time. I can't seem to find that fan anywhere new for a decent price.

It's going onto an intel desktop board (d845gvfn) Since I'm just going to put a different fan in, I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on what fan i should put in as a replacement.
Google p4fansThat CPU fan is not a critical item. I mean to say it is IMPORTANT, but it does not have to be a perfect MATCH. The heat sink is much more important. Make sure the heat sink FITS well and you use a bit of thermal grease. The fan can be anything that moves some air.
Do you just need only the fan?
A 92mm fan is cheap at some surplus outlets.doing the fan and heat-sink.OK. A fan and Heat Sink for a P$ using a 478 socket is usually around $35 or so, But if only the fan was broken you can get one for about $7

But..
If you are inside the USA and you don't mind shopping on eBay you can find bother the fan and heat skin for under $10
Not an endorsement of the vendor. This is for informational purpose here.
http://cgi.ebay.com/CPU-Cooling-Heatsink-Fan-for-Intel-P4-478-2-4GHZ-23-096_W0QQitemZ120512407072QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0f196620

Take a look at this. I will remove this link later.

Solve : Booting problem and automatic restarts?

Answer»

my pc takes 3 to 4 attempts to boot
what could be the problemWhy don't you provide us with some more information? All fans are working
power reaches everywhere
cd rom drive,mouse,keyboard,..

replaced RAM because of this problem
it's a new ram now

but still the problem is there
it takes 3 to 4 attempts to boot

and there are automatic restarts as well when the comp is booted and working
sometimes the comp freezes

sometimes i get blue SCREEN stop message asking to try changing video adapter or CHK bios update from vendorIncompatible RAM...Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work RIGHT / installed any new software?

Alan <>< How old is the power supply?well

when it works,it works fine
apart from the automatic restarts in between
once in an hour or so

power supply is 4 years old

it is windows xp OS SP2

no new software or hardware installed

apart from RAM stick which was to supposed to solve this problem
the prev ram stick had gone bad according to the hardware techniciani give you 90 % that your RAM doesn't want to work... That could be because you have different brand (like kingston and buffalo), ram capacity (512 and 256) or one of them is broken... Sorry I didn't ask - how many RAM cards do you have plugged in ?I have just 1 Ram stick

But i had similar problem with the old ram stick which has gone bad
that old ram stick worked fine for 4 years or so
and i haven't made any hardware or software changes
the problem started all of a suddenI would change out the power supply if you have DETERMINED that RAM is not the culprit

Win2k & WinXP are very similar. Some DIFFERENCES are no System Restore, Picture Viewer or WGA. Win2k is sometimes referred to as NT5.0 & WinXP as NT5.1, that's how similar they are. 64MB is BARELY enough for functioning, 128MB will just about double apparent speed.CC, Thank's for the info and i WILL try to get more RAM into it. truenorthIt's just about unusable with 64MB, but will boot after a very long wait. No, actually, they are referred to as NT 5 and NT 5.1 because those are their version numbers.

In an interesting twist, the difference between Windows 2000 and windows XP is the same as the difference between Windows Vista and 7, or approximately so; this therefore brings up the question of why many people think that Vista is more useless then a chocolate teapot?

ANYWAY... I ran windows 2000 with... 64MB, it was livable, but you had to be sparse with your demands.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 10, 2010, 03:47:49 PM

Solve : External Caddy for ATA-100 hard drive?

http://shopper.cnet.com/internal-hard-drives/seagate-momentus-4200-2/4014-9998_9-31153841.html#info-5

I decided that the best bet would be to get a cheap caddy/enclosure for it and pull the files off via USB on any new laptop I buy.

However, I am confused as to what type of caddy I need to buy as most seem to say SATA or IDE interface but nothing about ATA - 100.

Furthermore, if anyone can recommend a caddy that would work my hard drive was partitioned and I wondered if this would have any effect UPON my ability to access the files.

IDE and ATA are the same.
I have an adapter, not a caddy, that works quite well on all varieties of hard drives.

If you're going to replace the computer and would like to permanently use that old hard drive for storage, then an external enclosure would be the way to go. Thank you very much, I thought ATA maybe SATA for obvious reasons but when I pulled it out I realised that it looked like an IDE thus my confusion.

I don't intend on repairing the computer any time soon so I was going to remove the hard drive and place it in a caddy. Remove the files and then use it as a meduim to back up all my computers.

I will be ordering one of these then:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9467083/Dynamode-USB-2-0-2-5-SATA-IDE-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/Product.html

As it says both IDE and SATA compatible, which could be useful as I have no use for my 80gb PS3 Hard drive at the moment since I upgraded. Although for that purpose the adapter would be useful I can't find one as cheaply in the UK.

Once again thanks and I will post how I get on. The specifications say IDE & SATA. Notice that the box says SATA with no mention of IDE.
I have yet to see any caddy with both interfaces, so look elsewhere.Apparently, such units can be found: Max Value USB 2.0 Combo Hard Drive Enclosure for IDE or SATA Hard Drives. As promised a REPORT on how I got on incase anyone is interested for future reference.

I brought the IDE/SATA HDD enclosure as I posted above, also I borrowed an adapator from a friend (similiar to that suggested) just incase the caddy wasn't IDE compatible.

Turns out it was, the partition made no difference and the double USB connector on the new caddy powered my old laptops hard drive perfectly and I was able to recover all the files I lost. The SATA and the IDE INPUT are at different ends of the enclosure so its easy to swap around, although the adapator was obviously an easier option when I was using one hard drive to make back ups of my new system and the other to get back old files.

Thanks for the help. Thanks for the STATUS report. Glad to hear of the favorable outcome.

Solve : Dell XPS Gen 5 desktop will start up but will not boot?

Answer»

Hey It's been a long time SINCE I have been in here but I need help with my pc again.

My pc will start up (steady green LIGHT) but monitor STAYS (amber) it used to be able to boot up with safe mode but it will not even do that anymore

The RAM has been checked and reseated also checked the motherboard by removing the RAM and turning it on (beeping was HEARD)
I have a new HD that I installed less than a year ago.

I have replaced the CMOS battery

I had checked and updated the Nvidia video card driver
I had even done a windows repair

any other ideas.....

The fact that the light on the display REMAINS amber indicates it is not getting a signal from the video card. Do you hear the fans when you boot the system?yes I hear the fans and the it did boot up a few mins ago but after it started loading it (monitor ) went back to amberTry a different display on your system or try your display on a different system. Sounds like either a bad display or a bad video card.

Solve : Switching Graphics Cards Between Computers?

Answer»

I want to move two NVIDIA GEForce 7600GS graphics cards from an ASUS P5ND motherboard to an ASRock ConRoeXFire-eSATAII motherboard. The card and board configurations require that the cards be moved from two PCIEx16_2 slots on the ASUS motherboard to one AGI Express1 slot (PCI EXPRESS x4) and one PCI Express x16 slot (PCIE1) on the ASRock motherboard. Can anyone help me determine whether the two cards will work on the second motherboard? Will they work as well on the ASRock as they did on the ASUS motherboard? Any suggestions? Thanks.

P.S. -- The ASRock motherboard manual says that its slots are compatible with an nVidia GEForce 7600GT card, but my cards are 7600GS cards. Does this one-letter difference present a problem? Thanks again. as far as my knowledge goes about motherboards and graphics cards, IM fairly sure that those cards will work fine on that motherboard, however i dont THINK changing motherboard will make any difference in performance, that only really affects the processor and the RAMThanks for that (I'm changing motherboards for unrelated reasons).

Solve : looking for how to make my HDD in my laptop into a USB external HDD?

Answer»

my dell 1530 laptop (about 5 years old) croaked, Basically all I am trying to do is SALVAGE the HDD out of it, by locating a
connector for the HDD so I
can use the HDD as a USB drive and capture the data from it.

The laptop I think needs a MB yet I am not all that excited
about fixing it unless the MD is really cheap.

If anyone knows where to get a MB that would be good to know about too

Thx

That was a good model and is still in demand on the used market. You may be able to find a motherboard. Or you could buy a refurbished unit and transfer you stuff over to it. Expect to pay $100 for a motherboard.

Here is the gadget you want:

They are sold as a USB to HDD adapter.
You can get them from most of the on-line stores. Under $20 with shipping.

You can get a thing CALLED an enclosure which is a case complete with USB to HDD adapter. They come with all the necessary screws etc and I think it is better and NEATER than just using an adapter on its own with a bare drive. Less chance of a stray metal thing e.g. a staple or paper clip contacting the exposed drive's electronics. The picture below shows an IDE hard drive but you can get them for SATA drives as well. Some enclosures can use either type.

http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/recover-data-from-failed-laptop-notebook/

Thank you very much for the excellent information.

Now, I supposed that finding a source for the refurbished MB would be my next question.

So, Please steer me in the right direction on a source- anyone.

I'll sniff around on EBAY after posting this.

Thx

Solve : Replaced Power supply, now CPU fan sounds like 747 taking off?

Answer»

This is on a Compaq SR2180nx, the power supply went out so I took it to a repair shop to get it replaced. Ever since then the CPU fan RUNS at high speed all the time, from the time it BOOTS up to SHUT down. I took it back to the store and the guy says its normal for Compaqs to do that, that's why there is a extra large fan on the CPU. Funny, it never did it before. Is he right? It almost never ran at high speed before my power supply went out. The shop said they didn't remove or touch the fan at all.
Any suggestions? We replaced the PSU on a Dell and it did the same thing. It could just be the new PSU's fan is noiser than the old one.Its not the power supply fan that is loud its the original CPU fan with the heat sink attached.Quote

Its not the power supply fan that is loud its the original CPU fan with the heat sink attached.
Odd. They must ave done something. The fan may have a temp sensor. Check to see if is connected. Or look in the BIOS and see if thee is an option to control the fan speed. And there is a change that the fan and heat sink are not well seat4ed. This will cause the CPU to heat up and the fan has to work harder because of the increase in thermal resistance. You need to check this out.Take a close look at the fan while the unit is off to be sure there is no part of the harness touching the fan blades. I have a few Compacs and have never hear that "Compacs do that".

That is an old fallback answer when the techs don't know the real reason or can't solve it.Do you supose that he removed the fan and heatsink so that the power supply could be replaced more easily and when he PUT it back he failed to recoat the heatsink and CPU with artic silver?Quote from: mkinttrim on September 18, 2009, 09:29:10 PM

Here's what I found/did: I noticed that the last letters in the drive's interface DESCRIPTION were ATAPI, the PI got me going. Weather it stands for PARALLEL interface or not I'm not sure, but when I went back into the bios and enabled the PATA ports (which I'm sure I probably did at some point in this show, but not at the right time, found them off) then rebooted, it recognized it and away we go... go figure. Solve : Newly Built computer - help?

Answer»

Hi all,
Put my new PC together yesterday and today trying to install drivers and get it all working nicely. I'm running windows 7 ultimate. First problem is to do with my Gigabyte motherboard and the driver installation CD that came with it, i click install all drivers (the reccomended ones happen to be all of the available ones) and it GOES throught the process restarting several times, but afterwards only seems to have installed an energy saver program as it has (in BLUE text) installed next to it and the others don't.
Secondly, My graphics card doesn't seem to be detected by the computer, i installed the drivers and the "catalyst" program thing but i'm still FAIRLY sure it doesn't work. I am certain the graphics card is inserted in the pc correctly as my screen is plugged into the back of it and the screen works fine (so by that logic i'm assuming that the graphics card must also be installed fine).
Finally, my screen is SUPPOSED to support up to 1920x1080, but the highest I can choose in resolution settings is 1400x1050. My screen is 23"".
Would really appreciate any help with any of my issues (i'm a complete computer builder beginner, this is my first one) if anyone can spot my problem.
thanksNo need to post more than once.Sorry i probably posted it in the wrong place (was my thinking anyway) first time so i put it here, i'll go delete it from the other area.Open up Device MANAGER...any Yellow !'s or ?'s ? ?No there aren't any of those :s

Solve : background noise in headphone using motherboard audio connction?

Answer» HI everybody,

My PC has an Asus motherboard P4PE-X, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz, SoundMax audio.
I am now starting to get everything ready to transfer my vinyl records to CD with Magix CLEANING lab. So far no problem, but checking the sound with a headphone, connected to the line out connection of the motherboard I noticed that there is a constant background noise such as a TL lamp interference, but I am not aware of any source of that kind. Does anyone recognise this? Could this be avoided by installing a separate audio card?
Thanks in advance.

Hans_nlA seperate card is no guarantee the noise will dissipate...
Try reorienting any electronic devices near the machine. Thanks, Patio, for your advice. I tried to eliminate all possible sources in the neighbourhood of the PC but NOTHING worked, so, as a last ATTEMPT I installed a separate soundcard (Creative Audigy SE) and that did it: silence at last!Good to hear that worked for you...

Solve : Soundblaster Xtreme Gamer Xfi Problem?

Answer»

Okay well the drivers and everything work for the sound and speakers and everything BUT there is an issue. Creative's software has decided not to be able to recognize my soundcard as a supported audio device. I have been talking to creative support for the last 2 days and they keep taking LONGER and longer to write back lol. I think its sumped them So I need someone elses help I will post a COPY of my system information and hope someone can find whats wrong. Tnx in advance.

[attachment deleted by admin]Um dude by my post i figure dit was obvious I needed to have the creative applications detect my hardware (main driver work). I have been on tech support email for the past couple of days to no avail. All I need is to fix why the applications do not detect my soundcard but the drivers and window do. Can you give us an example of which applications don't have sound?

Also does any application have sound? Does windows startup make sound?

All applications in windows have sound and so does windows. Windows even uses the soundblaster driver for player recording and midi playback. But even though everything is set to the soundblaster card and onboard audio is disabled I still cant use the creative applications that come with my sound card. I receive an error on all of them saying no supported audio device detected. I am totaly LOST here lol.Have you tried to reinstall the creative applications bundle?

Ive tried 3-4 times. I booted in safe mode removed all drivers and software from them. Then rebooted and reinstalled them. Still received the same error. And creative support has stopped emailing me omg lol. What version of windows are you running? And what is the make of the motherboard?

Quote from: rubendodge on September 18, 2009, 12:18:22 PM

removed all drivers and software from them. Then rebooted and reinstalled them.
Are you installing the software and drivers from the original CD that came with the sound card or later versions downloaded from Creative? If your using new versions, you might try to see if an older version driver is available in Device Manager > Roll Back Driver.
Just an idea. Good luck!Windows Xp Professional Sp2 with all the latest updates and hotfixes(not sp3 since it sux). My motherboard is a Nvidia nforce 590 amd board. here is a link to it. http://www.epox.com/product.asp?id=EP-AF590SLI2

I tried only the ones on the cd aswell and it still didn't work right. Everytime I reinstall the drivers I try it without any updates. Then I go back and try them with the updates. Both to no avail.I had an identical problem with a SoundBlaster Live 24-bit card. Windows would see and use it, but the Creative software kept telling me there was no supported device. I returned it to the place I bought it and got another one then it worked FINE. Might just be the card in your case as well.Well bestbuy said I could return it and get another one to see if that works. If all else fails I will just return my headphones and my soundcard and get a cheap set of headphones and take the rest of the money and save it towards a new desktop pc lol. Lol creative stopped emailing me .From your list it looks like you have every piece of software Creative ever wrote...Well I was trying to find one that would actually work lol. I couldn't get any of them to work .Do you have the model # of the sound card handy?Creative - Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card

Solve : What's my computer worth??

Answer»

Hi,

I was not quite sure where to put this but I thought that Hardware would be the best place for this.
Does anyone know how much my Desktop computers are worth:
(Note both also have floppy drives, ATX power boxes and Modems)

Comp. 1 Celeron 1.3ghz
632mb of SDRAM
CD-ROM Drive-2007 (no mistake 2 CD drives and one can WRITE CD but not DVD)
CD/DVD ROM Drive -Sony
Via Mainboard-1999
8mb of VRAM-Trident
WIRLESS G Card-Linksys

Comp. 2 Pentium III 700mhz
632mb SDRAM
CD-ROM Drive
VIA Mainboard
32 Nividia Graphics card

Thanks once again, any price would be good
Without knowing the EXACT PARTS I can't tell you the price. Find the part numbers or model numbers and then look for the current market value and then take a little off because of the fact it has been used.Their worth about 40 Bucks apiece...Yes there slightly outdated these now so you won't get much. Computers progress so fast these day's that second hand machines just don't HOLD the money. What was once worth 300-400 is now worth less than 100. You could always keep the bit's for spares or even attempt to upgrade them a little to bring them up to speed.
Hope that was useful Both of the above posts are right.
The only thing I can say is you should think about the environment before placing them in the trash. Get on eBay and see if somebody will pay you at leaet shipping and handling charges. Hopefully they we want to keep the items .

Solve : Radeon 5770 Graphics card giving low performance.?

Hello,
I recently upgraded my graphics card from 1 XFX Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper) to 2 in Crossfire X
My problem is that my graphics performance has actually decreased according to WEI and also Im gettin low RESULTS with Vantage 3D Mark.
My original graphics scores in WEI were along the lines of 7.4/7.5
I ran WEI when I set up Crossfire X and got a score of 5.6/6.2 in the graphics categories. I know that WEI only tests your main graphics card but I took one out and ran it again (1 time with both cards) and I keep getting a base score of 5.5
Today I updated CCC to the newest version 11.6
( I also know that WEI isn't a great place to base your performance from, but I know I should be getting better than that!)

System:

Processor: Intel Core i7-940 2.93 GHz
Graphics Card: XFX Radeon HD 5570 (X2 Crossfire)
Motherboard: Asus P6D58-E
RAM: 6 GB OCZ Gold 1600 MHz
PSU: 850W ABS Dark Beret
Hard Drive: WD Caviar Black 640GB 6.0 GB/s
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

Thank you for any input!if phsical performance on games hasnt changed for the worst, i would PAY no attention WEI is a low grade benchmark with UNRELIABLE results.

Maybe it's a bit pre-mature to be going ballistic, but, I'd like to know what sort of actions use up space on my hard-disk, besides installing and downloading stuff. BTW, it's not even connected to the Net yet. Im using my dads puter.Sometimes install leaves many temp files.

Run diskcleanup

start, all programs, accessories, system tools and click diskcleanup

also run:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm

Run your antivirus

also run:

C:\>dir /s msinfo*.exe

C:\>"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"

start, run [ msinfo32.exe ]

System restore will take a lot of space. Then there are the TEMPORARY Internet Files (adjust allotted space yourself), temp files, etc. Want some advice? Find something else to worry about.

Solve : My Pc switches off automatically?

Answer»

My PC switches off automatically. The technician replaced fan
in the CPU unit a few months ago but its STILL getting switched
off. Now the technician is saying that it's a hardware problem
and need to replace the hardware inside the CPU. Whether I
need to buy a new hardware for Rs 2800.

BIOS SETUP CPU readings:
SYSTEM temp = 33 degrees Celsius
CPU temp = 48 degrees Celsius
CPU Fan speed = 2708 RPM
CPU Vcore = 1.37V
3.3V 3.44V
5.0V 5.16V
12.0V 12.09V
Battery voltage = 3.44V

Can any one help me.
Specify what hardware needs to be replaced.well for one you cant replace the hardware in the CPU the CPU is the hardware. i would say the PSU would need REPLACING, or what i think ou are tying to say is replace the Central Processing Unit as it may be dead.

Solve : Please Help Newbie with Complex Problem?

Answer»

Hi. This is my first question at your forum, so please forgive me if I've somehow posted it incorrectly. But, I have problems I don't know how to resolve on my own and may develop into worse problems.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. It's running VISTA 32-bit and Office 2007. I have a program called Anonymizer on it (www.anonymizer.com) and Norton Anti-Virus latest edition to come out.

Some time ago, I tried to update to IE 8 and it seemed to wreak havoc on my system. I tried to uninstall it. Made things worse. I took it to a computer repair store nearby and told them: My system often freezes when you turn the LAPTOP on and I have to do Control + Alt+ Delete several times to get past the start-up screen. Sometimes it will start FINE.

Other problems: Sometimes a gray box will pop up saying that the Semantec Framework has stopped working, or something like that (can't REMEMBER the exact words).

After taking the laptop to a local library once, the Anonymizer program stopped working completely. Their IT said it could have to do with IE8 not being supported but they couldn't say for sure.

Anyway, after I took it to their shop, they reinstalled IE8 but it can only run by clicking "Run as Administrator." The other problems....freezing at start-up, Sematec thing, are still there.

After a while, the CyberLink Power2Go program for burning CDs and DVDs stopped working. It says that no matter what I do, it cannot read any CDs or DVDs PUT into the tray. Meanwhile, another program I use to burn DVDs, works just fine. I tried burning CDs with Windows Media Player and it, too, does not work to burn CDs at all. When I put a CD into the tray, it doesn't seem to want to start even after I click "Rip."

Different people have told me to do different things to repair things. One guy told me to just uninstall Norton, download a freebie antivirus like AVG or Avast or SpyBot and run it, then reinstall Norton. I'm completely confused and don't know much about hardware/software installation and don't want to mess up my laptop even more than it already is.

Can anyone please help and give step-by-step instructions for us newbies?

Thank you very much. Remove Norton and install Avast Home Edition...Free.
Make sure to use the Norton Removal Tool...
So there you at least got good advice.
Get rid of CyberLink as well...another resource hog...
CDBurnerXPro is a good Free alternative.

Also decide why you need to run Anonimyser and if you actually need it...

After this make sure to run diskclean and defrag on that drive.
Good Luck.

Solve : computor shuts off?

Answer»

after LOADING windows it shuts off, same place every time. It also does it in safe mode. My pc is an E machine model t3626 with a AMD Sempron 3800+ / 2.2 GHz processor. And what place would that be? And what happened between the last time the system worked properly and the first time it did not (new sw, hw, virus, etc)? The quality of the replies you receive will be indirect proportion to the quality of the information you provide in your question. Its my sons pc. He erased the harddrive and reloaded windows(he's done that before) after he reloaded windows when it restarted thats when it happened. It dtarts loads windows and then shuts off. no warning no nothing, it's like someone pulled the plug. I tried it in safe mode and the same thing happens. I'm wondering if it could be the processor or mobo?If if happened right after he reinstalled the OS then I doubt it's a hw problem. Why did he reinstall the OS?

I'm guessing that since he just did a reinstall you should do it again - and MAKE sure it's right this time. Insert the OS CD and boot to it, reformat the system partition, install the OS, install the chipset driver then all other drivers, install an AV utility, install all Windows Updates, then install whatever apps you want to. All in that order.I'll try that and let you know. Thank you very much. With eMachines, I'd take a serious look at POWER supply...Allen,
OK IDID as you suggested and erased the harddrive and put in the recovery disc that came with the pc, it has vista home on it. It says windows is loading files. Then it goes to the next screen which is a black screen with the microsoft logo over a small rectangle and then immediatly shuts off, just like someone pulled the plug. It won't load the os.

Me.Interesting. If you say so the drive is like 2 years or soIMHO, it's failing.
Did you try different disks?I would still bet on going for the manual cleaning of the optical drive's lens for the dust. Just like any CD or DVD players. The only difference with a Lens cleaner is convenience but the effectiveness for manual is still higher aside from the cheap or no cost. Just look for videos online on how to clean the lens manually. Or just look for a friend who could lend you a hand on this simple method.Or just get a new dual-layer burner for 20+Bucks...

Solve : Computer won’t start, BIOS won’t even load?

Answer»

Some of you might have seen my other post just a few days ago. I was having trouble with my secondary rig (that issue is pretty much fixed now), but now
I’m having some trouble with my main rig (*censored* computer problems like to happen one after another):

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Rev 2.0
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe @ 2.66Ghz (Stock Clock) w/ Stock Heatsink & Fan
RAM: OCZ SLI-Ready 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800mhz 4-4-4-15 1T timings (Stock timings)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 260 896MB (575MHz/2000MHz Factory OC, 192 Processor Cores)
Sound Card: Creative SB Audigy 2
Hard Drive 1: Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB 7200RPM (OS Installed)
Hard Drive 2: Seagate 320GB SATA 7200RPM
Hard Drive 3: WD Raptor 150GB 10000rpm SATA
PSU: OCZ GameXStream 600W
OS: Windows XP Home SP2 32-bit

It all started yesterday when I was playing BF2. After playing for about an hour, my computer just crashed, then restarted itself. However it just hung at the mobo splashscreen, before POST or loading Windows, so I turned it off. Later it booted up fine and got to the desktop. However within about 10 minutes, same thing happened: it crashed, restarted itself and hung at the mobo splashscreen.

Thinking it might be an overheating problem, I opened the case and cleaned out some dust using a can of compressed air. I then booted it up with the case side OPEN and noticed a screeching sound that I’ve never heard before COMING from the lower front end of the case. It didn’t load Windows at all and just hung at the mobo splashscreen. I then tried to determined what the screeching sound was. At first I thought it was my front intake fan (which also has a blue LED light on it that was kind of flashing, which it never did before). I disconnected the fan, rebooted and it still made the screeching noise, so it wasn’t the fan. Also now it wouldn’t even get to the mobo splash screen or load BIOS, I’m just getting a blank screen.

That was yesterday, today I tried booting it up again and still the blank screen. The PSU LED light is on, the PSU,CPU and fans are all running so I’m guessing it has something to do with BIOS or maybe the mobo.

I was still getting the screeching noise so I removed devices one at a time to determined what piece of hardware was making noise. The floppy drive ended up being the culprit. I took it out and now there’s no more screeching noise, however my computer still is not booting and I’m just getting a blank screen.

I’m not sure if the floppy drive malfunctioning had anything to do with Windows crashing and not booting or if it was just a coincidence.
Later I’m going to remove some devices one at a time until it boots, like removing the video and soundcard and using the integrated ones to get it to boot.

This is just a guess but would maybe flashing BIOS or clearing CMOS fix this problem?

If anyone has any other suggestions or advice on how to fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. There's no harm in clearing the cmos & resetting the bios, though I don't think it will matter (unplug the computer from AC, remove the internal battery, wait 20 seconds or so and then replace the battery, close the cover and plug it in).

Do you have an XP CD? If so, can you boot to the recovery console? If so, try running chkdsk /r. Again, I don't really think this will fix your problem but there's no harm in trying.

And no, I don't see any correlation between a bad floppy drive and your current problem. Just make sure that when you removed it you didn't dislodge any other connections and the hd's are still plugged into the mobo.i tried clearing CMOS still no go. i do have the XP disc but computer wont even get to BIOS or POST, so i cant boot it using the disc.

i tried with just 1 RAM stick in all 4 RAM slots, still no go. I've removed all devices except for CPU,Vid Card,RAM and PSU, still no go.

i think i have a dead mobo.

computer wont even get to BIOS

Will it allow you to enter BIOS when hard drive 1 (Samsung) is physically disconnected?nope.Swap in a known good power supply of equal or greater wattage.....i tried a different PSU, Video Card, RAM stick and CMOS battery from my other rig and the same thing. i think this pretty much confirms its the mobo.

now i gotta decide if im gonna buy a new mobo or send in this one to gigabyte to get a replacement as i think the warranty is still good.

thanks for all of your help. Can't be anything but the mobo. They still are selling for around $100. Unless you like to flush money down the toilet, CONTACT Gigabyte for an RMA.It would be the mobo then. You've singled each and every point of failure. It wouldnt be a bad time to get a new mobo.

Solve : 3 of 4 DIMM slots not working?

Answer»

Greetings

I have this old HP Compaq d530 Small Form Factor PC that I got used about a year ago, and 6 months ago it's 3rd DIMM (RAM) slot stopped working, as in gave me 5 beeps on startup, which is this models beep code for a RAM issue. So I trial and errored until I pinpointed it to the 3rd slot malfunctioning. Then, a week ago, slots 1 and 2 also went dead. I have tried swapping the memory sticks with new ones that I'm sure work, as well as replacing the power source of my PC with a newer one that I know works, and cleaned the memory slots as best I could with compressed air, etc, and no dice: they still fail. The odd thing is, if I connect the 3 sticks into the slots after I boot up my PC (being grounded of course), both CPU-Z and SpeedFan (programs that can detect hardware) BOTH detect the 3 sticks, but alas, they go unused. The 4 memory sticks are all the same exact 256mbs and all made by the same company. I assume it's a mobo problem, as I got this PC used, but sadly, the stupid BIOS for this computer doesn't allow me to do things like adjust RAM voltage, etc. Now, I am trudging through windows XP with a measly 256mbs of RAM and ready to hang myself it's so slow. Any help would be greatly appreciated~It needs first generation RAM... (winces) that is one old pc... Well... for starters, 6 months ago, did it fail while the PC was up and running? or did it fail when/after you changed something inside?
To rule out all possible PSU issues, have you attempted to boot with only 1 stick of RAM in slot 3?
And for clarification, you said, you have four 256 MB ram sticks, 3 of which are working when plugged in. you should have 768 MB of RAM when booting into windows...It's only 1 slot that remains working, with 3 broken ones. All of the sticks work fine, I've tested them one at a time in the one remaining working slot #4 with memtest, as well as in another PC, I'm positive that it's the mobo/slots. And it stopped working after I shut the PC down overnight and turned it back on again, no changes made. Another weird thing that may be worth mentioning is for awhile there, back when only 1 slot wasn't working, if I left the machine on for days at a time, then turned it off, quickly re-attached the RAM into the slot, and POWERED back on again, it would work. Not anymore though~Use 1st and 3rd slots. Or 2nd and 4th slots. http://www.andovercg.com/datasheets/hp-d530-quickspec-11632_na.pdfTried it already, doesn't workQuote from: Remilia on June 27, 2011, 08:28:33 PM

...if I connect the 3 sticks into the slots after I boot up my PC (being grounded of course)...
This is a reasonable method for damaging the computer and/or the RAM sticks. RAM sticks are not "hot swappable"; being grounded make no difference if you install them "hot".Yeah I figured that might not be the smartest method, but I was out of ideas at that point, and this all started before I tried ITTHAT board is shot. Kaput. You may prefer to believe that is is merely tired and shagged out after a long squawk, but it is finished. Put this 7 year old dying machine in a dumpster.
I'm believe those Compaq's use special memory: 256-MB DDR SYNCH Dram PC2700
Since your model number is incomplete, all I could do is search www.crucial.com
http://www.crucial.com/search/searchresults.aspx?keywords=compaq%20d530@Salmon Trout:
Nah, it's just the memory slots. WORST case scenario, I could just pony up and buy a 1g or 2g RAM stick and put it in the remaining working slot. The mobo has no problems other than this

@Computer_Commando:
Perhaps, but that wouldn't explain why it worked flawlessly for 6 months before acting up (at least I don't think it would ^^;). The RAM I use is "Nanya 256mb DDR PC3200" x4

There's an update to this problem: Today, I got a 512mb RAM stick from a different PC and put it into each of the slots of my faulty HP, and it actually works in slots #3 and #4, despite none of the other 256mb ones working in slot #3. ~.~ Now, it is working alongside a 256mb one in the slot that always worked (#4) for a total of 768mbs of RAM, which is passable for my purposes of this comp, but I'd still rather like to know wth is going on here, and how to fix it, since 1,280mbs of RAM would certainly be preferableQuote
but I'd still rather like to know wth is going on here, and how to fix it

Have you read the documentation? Click on Memory, page 18? Possible memory configuration.
Actually as was already illustrated above...plugging/unplugging RAM chips with power to the machine is probably what has sent this MBoard to it's early demise...@jason2074:
I appreciate your efforts, but I've already fiddled around with every possible combination to no avail

@patio:
I doubt that, I've done this kind of experiment before to other PC's that were later FIXED and ran perfectly, I think the danger is removing one that was already recognized at startup, not plugging one in an empty slot after startup, and like I said already, the problem began BEFORE I tried doing that. Plus, I now have a -working- RAM stick inside a slot (#3) that I tried plugging in after power was on and it is working fine (after restart though). And there is no "demise", I'm using the PC with the very same mobo in question as we speak, and it's very much aliveQuote from: Remilia on June 29, 2011, 04:25:57 AM
@patio: I doubt that, I've done this kind of experiment before

Connecting and/or disconnecting or inserting/removing RAM modules or any other item not designed to be hot-swappable is very bad practice. Add-on cards, (display, network, sound), disk drives, PS/2 keyboards & mice, serial port connectors, all these things and more can be damaged or damage the motherboard, often in subtle ways that won't immediately show up. You may have been lucky so far, but you would be foolish to disregard the advice of people who (clearly) know more than you.

Others reading this would be foolish to take your opinion as authoritative.

Solve : my computer has no display?

Answer»

I have a dell dimension, but theres no video when I PLUG it up to a monitor. Im not sure if the computer has ONBOARD video or a video card. How do I find out? And if it was using a video card before the display went out (Im assuming because of the video card going bad) and I want to switch to using onboard video (assuming its present), how would I do it if I cant see the BIOS screen on a display?Unplug your computer and open it up.... If the monitor is plugged into what appears to be a card (a card would be plugged into a slot on the motherboard) then you're using a video card. If you have onboard video then it will appear as if the monitor is plugged directly into the motherboard through a connector directly attached to the motherboard..

EITHER way, before you change any configurations on your computer, try another monitor. If another monitor works, then we've isolated the problem to your current monitor. If it does not WORK, then we've isolated the problem to something on the computer itself... I did try another working monitor. There is still no display from the computer. I also opened up the computer, youre right , there is no card so the computer probably has onboard. Now to RESTORE the video, do I need to get a video card and put it in, and if so will any video card work? And once I install that video card and turn on the computer, will I see display or is there something else I need to do also?
What is the make/model of the computer?its a dell dimension 4550I would go with an AGP card. Your motherboard supports either AGP or PCI. You'll get better performance out of an AGP card.

Any one of these will do, just make sure you buy one with a connector the same as the type of connector on your monitor..
