Solve : RAM Problems?

Answer»

as we know MANY PC PROBLEMS are CAUSED by RAM Problems.
Is there any way to detect the problems in RAMs and to correct.
If there is a way, how do we correct it.

Thanks
RegardsYou can test RAM with a free download from www.memtest86.com. If the RAM has problems it should be REPLACED. You cannot correct it.Quote

pleiz help,

i have intel mather board.which support pentuim 4.
it have two slots for a RAM.

slot [1] works well alone.
slot[2]works well alone also.
the two RAMs is of the same QUALITY works well in EITHER slots individually.
But the problem when i put both RAMs at the sametime in both the slots,it does not read me the total capacity of the RAMssummed together.

thankyou. date 4-9-2007 Sounds as if it is mis-matched RAM i.e. different speeds that don't play well together.
What does it say on each stick ? ?its normal if you dont have the total of your RAM..COZ windows using a little bit of it..Quote from: kuszmania9999 on SEPTEMBER 05, 2007, 12:42:50 AM

Ignore that post goobay, Windows can't influence the amount of RAM your BIOS detects.Sounds like one stick is a bit faster. If you take them out and look at the stickers they should tell you on there. Post what it says on the stickers and then we can tell you for sure.are you using the on board video? as long you are using on board video it also use memory. i suggest you to purchase a video CARD for able not to use the 64 mb memory in your ram or you can go to bios set - up to to change the agp aperture size.

Solve : Replacing integrated video card with no monitor??

Answer»

I have installed a new video card to replace the failed integrated one but how can I do anything at all when I get no picture on the monitor? I bought a new cable, tried connecting to both video cards and even tried putting in the SOFTWARE but can't do anything without a picture. I ALSO tried a different monitor and had no picture with it either. I READ I am supposed to disable the old card before connecting to the new one but as I said, I can't do anything on a blank screen. Hewlitt Packard was no help and sent me to the company who MADE the new video card but they are no longer in business. I am at a loss.
If the vid card co is no longer in business i would suspect problems down the road...but you said it was new.
Where did you purchase it ? ?
Also provide more details on what happened leading up to the onboard video failure...
And Welcome Aboard !Many motherboards automatically detect if a video card is in a slot and, in that situation, disable the onboard video part of the motherboard chipset, and switch to the video card. It is possible that if the onboard video hardware is damaged that this does not happen. In that case the motherboard could be junk. Realistically, if the onboard video has failed, the motherboard has failed.

Before tossing it I would try going into the BIOS at startup and see if the act of doing that BRINGS up anything on the monitor.

Solve : hard disk error?

Answer»

when i try to install WINDOWS xp from cd in SETUP OPTIONS when i select a partition and tries to format the drive from cd after completing 100% message appears windows is not able to format this drive make SURE drive is connected and is turned on and when i tries to install windows leaving file system as it is after COPING files when computer restarts after bios completed a blue screen appears which shows error code 0x0000007......................... and direct to restart the system and when computer restart "t" appears You should DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site and run them to see if that drive is healthy.
Use the DLoad to create a bootable CD to test the drive. Windows does not need to be running so you can even do this on an empty drive.

Is this a genuine XP CD you are using or a copy ? ?

Solve : LCD backlight works then doesn't?

Answer»

It started LAST week when after turning back on from sleep mode, the backlight turned on then off. I brought a light to it, and STILL saw an image so I suspected it was the backlight or power supply.
The next day, I took the case off and looked around a bit on the inside, but came to no solution.
Plugging it in, I found that the backlight worked again, though the picture was a LITTLE dark.
Two DAYS later, the backlight again went out after I came back from sleep mode.
I turned it off and left it alone for a few hours. After this, I turned it back on, and the light worked again!
A day later, the same thing happened.

To recap, these are my symptoms:
1. Monitor's backlight does not turn on after COMING back from sleep mode.
2. After turning the whole monitor off and letting it rest for a few hours, the backlight will turn on.
3. When the light is on, the picture is noticeably darker, but lightens after a few minutes. The light bleeding through the edges, as well.

It is a Dell E172FP.
I have an Nvidia GeForce 6800, if that matters.

Basically I want to know if this is at all a common problem, or at least a documented one, and any suggestions on what to do.

Thanks. If it is, indeed, a problem with the monitor it should be replaced or sent for servicce IF cost effective. There are no user servicable parts, and you can get quite a shock if you open it and poke aroiund.

Solve : Blue screen of death please help!?

Answer»

I recently built my first computer and have had nothing but problems. I first was getting a black screen telling me to insert system disc. When I did this it would just keep repeating itself over and over. Since then, with the help of you guys, I was able to go into bios and change my boot OPTIONS to boot from cd. I thought that was working but when I am installing xp it gets to about 3 minutes remaining and goes to a blue screen. the error message is different every time I try to reinstall windows and depends upon the time left when the message COMES on. The main one that it keeps telling me is page_fault_in_unpaged_area. I talked with a guy from microsoft for 4 HOURS tring to get this resolved. I have talked with 2 guys I know who, in my opinion are the best there is and no one can help me. Tonight I left the computer with a friend who said he would work on it some more. I am at my witts-end with this thing. One time I actually got it to intall and load windows but it will only load with the cd in. plus it will only load for a bout 10 seconds and then restart AUTOMATICALLY. If anyone could help I would really appreciate. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TO DO?
here are the specs:
xfx 650i ultra motherboard, g8400 nvidia graphics, 200g hd, intel pentium 3.0gh proc. do you think this could be a hardware problem
PLEASE HELPIf you recently installed some hardware, is there a possible way to remove it?

Have you checked for viruses recently?

What OS are you using to install XP?

Does your computer freeze (hang) before you get the dreaded BSOD?

Yes, I think this is a hardware problem. I received a similar error when I plugged my Yamaha DGX-220 Keyboard into my computer. Normally this happens when a program attempts to write to protected or non-existent memory.

If possible, remove all unnecessary hardware from your computer, unplug every device except the mouse, keyboard and speakers, and try again. You don't say how much RAM you have or how many sticks. If you have more than 1 stick, remove one and try. If it WORKS Ok then you have a bad stick of RAM. If that one doesn't work, then swap it with the other and try it. PC troubleshooting is a process of elimination and experience.

Solve : strictly budget gaming card?

sorry, bud, but i don't do newegg rebates. i've read many reviews saying how the rebate process has been headaches to all (unless of course you've tried it yourself.)

but that x1950GT is looking pretty gangster. Just a question, tho. I have a gig of memory. How much would I benefit from another 512MB, maybe another gigabyte?

You should trust the rebate service. "I've read" isnt exactly an argument.

Your graphics card matters a lot more than RAM. But consider upping the budget. You wont find a good AGP card for 70$.
What Calum has suggested has my reccomendation.Quote from: Jess607 on June 22, 2007, 10:21:56 AM

What would anybody recommend in the $100 to $140 range?
alexfue12 - you may benefit from another 1Gb of RAM in some games, but your graphics card is more important.alright, then. that means i have more room SINCE i don't have to worry about RAM. How bout this bad boy?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102071More expensive than the X1950GT I linked to, but also more powerful.
If you give me a definite budget I'll look around some more for you.Alright right now I have about $220 saved up, but I also gotta get a PSU as well, so if it's a quality brand i'll have to wait just a little longer. i'd say the maximum would be $250 incl. PSUOK, let me look tomorrow for you.

Are you sure that RAM won't matter, even with 1GB ddr400? I sure hope not. I don't wanna bottleneck the card too bad or else that extra horsepower would be worthless unless i do a bit of upgrading. From my experience, 2Gb of RAM will help if you heavily multitask, and it will help games load faster.
The difference will only be a few fps on most games, if indeed there is a difference in performance.
If you UPGRADE the video card now, you can get more RAM LATER if you want - the video card will make a massive difference.
Give me a few minutes, I'm going to look for a card and power supply now.For a power supply, this looks good to me.
Good brand, decent amount of power.
Taking $220 as your max budget and bearing in mind that power supply is $60 or so, the X1950GT I linked to above is still your best bet as far as I can see.
There are few more powerful cards available for AGP right now, and the price is good too.
If anyone else has any opinions on this choice, please fel free to add your comments. That psu looks nice and all, but would you happen to know how many combined amps there are on the +12V?It doesn't say on Newegg, but looking on some other sites I see peak output 18A, continuous 12A.
Any reason why?well other places i've read 34 peak, 22 continuous. So I'm guessing it's not really what i'm looking for, huh?Quote from: alexfue12 on June 23, 2007, 01:11:38 PM

On a 12V rail ? ? ?

This doesn't sound correct.meh, forget that. i thought he meant 18A altogether. then i remembered that it had dual +12v rails.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be able to order this real soon (have to wait until Monday) man, these upgrades couldn't come at a better time. I am now stuck with a hard-drive, cpu, cooler, sound card, and wireless card and even then the computer locks up on counter-strike 1.6. COUNTERSTRIKE 1-POINT--6! And i can almost smell something burning. d**N, better turn off this computer.

Solve : My DVD/CD-ROM no longer plays DVD's, need help?

Answer»

I have an older Sony vaio desktop pcv-rx550. My OS is Windows XP. A few months ago my DVD/CD-ROM stopped playing dvd's. When I insert a dvd no windows will open recognizing that I put one in. Audio cd's work fine, data ones as well I believe. Occasionally some cd-r's and cd-rw's aren't detectable either. My computer has recently recovered from a number of viruses from when I had no anti-virus installed. I got Norton and everything seems to be running fine again, it says it has protected me from thousands of viruses. Maybe something was corrupted and is why DVD's no longer play I am not sure. Can someone help me get my cd-rom to work properly again? Thankstry uninstalling and re-installing whatever software, (powerDVD etc) you use to play your DVD's it COULD just be corrupt software/codec.
I am ASSUMING it's software because you can read audio/data dvd's.

What exactly happens when you put in a DVD?
Will not recognise DVD?
Plays sound only?

Have you tried putting in DVD and using explorer or my computer to BROWSE the files on the DVD?Nothing happens at all when I insert a DVD. I try to open the drive with explorer to look at the contents of the disc but a window pops up saying 'please insert disc,' so it isn't recognizing the disc being in at all. Do I know if it is the codec that is the problem yet or something else possibly?Reading DVD's is much more complicated than reading CD's. SOmetimes the laser fails and the drive needs to be replaced. How old is it and what manufacturer?I think its about 7 years old, Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-116R.7 years old? That must have cost a lot at the time.
You can get a new one now for about AU$50

Anyhow easiest fix/test WOULD be to ask someone you know if you can put the drive in thier computer.
If it's still not reading the DVD it's time to get a new driveQuote

Do you smoke cigarrettes ? ? I saw a customers drive last week and the laser lens itself was covered in crud...use rubbing ALCOHOL and a Q-Tip.

patio. 8-)Haha... the computer is full of dust, clumps of it everywhere, so it would not surprise me if the lens was caked over. I should probably just bring it to someone to clean it if that is possible, and maybe it will work. If not I guess just get a new drive.

Solve : Monitor goes full green for seconds during boot.?

Answer»

My monitor goes full green for seconds and also flickers somewhat during boot. This problem persists for initial 10-15 minutes of booting, after that it's working fine. This problem started when i kept the monitor off for some 3-4 hours one night. Also i cannot set my screen resolution to 1024 by 768 after this problem, HOWEVER i was able to set the same prior to this problem. When i TRIED to set a higher screen resolution it showed 'Out of Frequency' message.I have noticed that when i keep the monitor off for few minutes and turn it on, it starts with the same problem and takes its time to settle down.I tried to update the display driver, but the message appeared 'Cannot continue the hardware update wizard' The wizard could not find a better MATCH for ur hardware than the software you CURRENTLY have installed.
Details:
Windows XP SP-2
Intel P4 1.7Ghz
SDRAM 480mb
Display adapter:S3 Graphics Prosavageddr
Monitor-manufaturer:LG
Monitor-Model:StudioWorks 563N
Screen refresh rate displays a maximum of 85Hz and is set at the same.
Try another monitor. If the problem goes away, it's your monitor. If you still have the problem then it's the video card.

Solve : Monitor/Display issue?

Answer»

Greetings all,

I'm at a loss. Whenever I start up my computer my display colors are fine. Then about 10 seconds after the startup PROGRAMS have booted up my monitor gets brighter. Like a flashbang went off. For instance black looks like a dark BROWN, its that bright.

I've RECENTLY upgraded to Vista from XP. I updated my driver for my video card and it seems to be working fine. Though, I found out AFTER I had upgraded to Vista that my MoBo doesn't support the OS. Dumb move on my part I know. Got any ideas?

Any help or advice is appreciated.I'm at a loss too. I can't help you because I don't know the make model and type (CRT/LCD) of your monitor, your motherboard or your video card.

Who told you your "MoBo" doesn't support Vista?

And the Asus site, so far, has no support for Vista for my model.

Solve : error: system fan failed?

Answer»

ok, i know what your thinking... search the forums!

I did... a LOT....

Ok, here's the story and history and a little background:

I am a little tech... i say little in terms of i know most of the terms and some fun things with computers. I help others and fix minor problems for FRIENDS, co-workers and bosses. That said, if you have any advice, there is no need to bother with "lamens terms"..lol

Now, i recently bought a used computer from a friend. When i bought it she mentioned that it needed a new CPU fan. I asked how do you know (she is not very computer litterate and needed to know more details incase there is something other than that). She said that the computer told her so. Well, you can't get much more exact than that.

After playing around with it and trouble shooting some minor problems.... no video, POST codes, and boot up and shut down in 5 second intervals, traveling to more than one store, i ended up going and buying a new CPU heat sink w/ fan.

Now this i figured should solve the problem. No, instead it SHOWED me the problem. The computer now boots, AND shows video, but then about 10 sec into, after the first screen of the manufacture (compaq) with the help text at the bottom of the screen telling of the key inputs (ex: F1-setup), the screen changes to a simple black screen with text telling me that the system fan failed and will shut down in a few seconds. Please asses the problem immediatly.

I could only think of one thing. There are only 2 fans in the computer, the CPU, and the PSU. So, i took a different power supply from another computer lying around, and tried it. The PSU though did not have all of the required plugs, there was the standard 20 pin, but it needed an additional 4 pin plug to be put into the MOBO at a different location. I tied to start the computer anyways.....
I unpluged all unwanted items. So there was only the MOBO, the RAM, the CPU (w/ fan), and the PSU. (haha.. so many abbrev.)

This time, the computer turned on, fans spun, DID NOT TURN OFF.... but no video. OK, so i pluged to original back in and looked to see if the PSU fan was spinning... yes, it was.

Now being frusturated, i went to the store and bought a 400 wat power supply... easily enough to replace the 250 wat original.

No avail.
Same screen appears and shuts down...... and yes i tried to go into CMOS and bypass/reset this fan test. It does not allow me to. Still the screen appears.

Already i have spent half as much money trying to fix it as i paid for the whole computer. If there is anything that i can do to get it working, it waould be greatly appreciated!!!

Model ............ Compq Presario SR1303WM
CPU .............. AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.0 GHz
Motherboard .. Asus A7V8X-LA
RAM .............. 512 MB (1x 184 pin, DDR SDRAM, PC2700)

If there is any other information needed please ask. Thank you in advanced. Reset the BIOS to it's default settings.

It may be monitoring a fan that isn't there. Or you connected the CPU or PSU fan(Monitor) to the wrong connector. And did the new PSU have the additional 4 prong plug ? ? This may be important...

patio. 8-)Raptor-

I can't get into BIOS, when i try to press the button for setup (or any button for that matter), it still goes to the same screen. I thought the same thing, but i just cant get into it.

Patio-
Yes, the new PSU has the correct conectors

My mother board is pretty simple. The CPU fan can only go into one plug... labled 'CPU fan', and there is only one more plug that the PSU can additionaly plug into. lol, can asure you that it is all done correctly, also there is no monitoring devices in addition to the MOBO's. (ie: a sepperate temperature guage)Quote

Raptor-

I can't get into BIOS, when i try to press the button for setup (or any button for that matter), it still goes to the same screen. I thought the same thing, but i just cant get into it.

That's not how we reset the BIOS where I come from, son!

Remove the CMOS battery for ~10 seconds or shortcircuit the CMOS jumper. Refer to the mainboard manual for more information.lol, ya learn something everyday..... well sorta.

lol, ok, i thought that was how yuo did it, not knowing full well that it was an actual step. hehe, i amaze myself sometimes...

just kidding!!

OK, yes i tried that. I might try it again because i don't think i did it for 10 seconds. Maybe 5-8, but i feel that i was long enough. Anywho, lets just say that i tried that.

Raptor....
Can you elaborate on the jumper? I know what a jumper is, i still need to look up which one it is (need to download the manual), what i mean is, do i just take a piece of metal (ie: a flat head screw driver) and place in between the two pins.
-For how long?
-Is it just the two pins or is it like two or more pins from around the board, needing something more like a wire?
(Not likely, but just covering my bases)

THANKS again for the quick responses.Raptor-

You are my hero.....
I only wish one day to be as cool as you .... ..

Ok, for the rest of you that may have this same problem. I went and looked up my motherboard on my manufactures web site (HP's web site) and found that there is a jumper that allows you to reset the CMOS settings. Thanks again Raptor!

I moved the pins from one to the other just as the intructions said and back again. Booted up and no failure!!! YAY!!

Once again thanks.... you saved me a ton of anguish and money!

-ff7vii-Hah! Who needs a hero when you've got me?

Anyhow, here's some more information that might come in handy some day:

One some mainboards it's easier to remove the CMOS (CR2032) battery than it is to LOCATE the jumper. I don't know if Compaq systems have these, though.

But whatever you do, don't shortciruit the CMOS jumpers with a screwdriver. That just doesn't sound right, you can jumpstart a PC with a screwdriver but I wouldn't try resetting the BIOS that way...

Solve : 300PL's?

Answer»

In response to GX1_Man's reply. Let me explain.

1. I've never asked a SPECIFIC question about the 300 PL's until now.
2. As you can see, from my last post, it's been 2 YEARS, since I've asked a question on this forum.
3. I've found, since the site has been upgraded, if you don't state the EXACT wording or know the EXACT question, stated perfectly, the site rejects your question or tells you there is nothing in the data base that matches your request.
For that reason, I don't bother coming here for answers, because, it was by FLUKE, that I found the information I was seeking the first time. Now, I have to SPEND hours searching through forums, Q and A sections, etc., trying to find the answers I'm looking for. It seems this site is only geared to computer whizzes and techno geeks, not the average computer person, that has only a limited knowledge. That is why, you're a GENIUS and I'm a NEWBY. And know, I'm not confused about anything, I just refuse to pay exhorborant prices to fix something that I can do myself. Unfortunately, as I stated, finding the information I seek is like looking for Martians on the moon. An exercise in futility. Quote

Lots of newbies come here and get the help they need, although we do TRY to involve them in the process of SOLVING THEIR problems at times, as frequently not enough information is provided on the first post, and solutions can require interaction from the person sitting in front of their computer.

You further show your confusion by talking about not paying exhorbitant prices. Where did that come from? This forum is FREE.

Solve : Weird intermittent problem?

Answer»

After MOVING moving all my stuff to a new case, I'm having a new problem. At the most random times my computer will just lock up and freeze. It can happen at the desktop, in bios, while windows is loading, just about anytime. Sometimes my computer will run for a day before it happens, or sometimes I wont get any video at all went I turn it on. Completely random pretty much. I'm a computer technician and i'm not sure what the problem is. My suspicision right now is that the new case is kinda funky and it prevents my AGP vid card from being completely seated in it's slot. Does that sound like a something that would happen? Could this POSSIBLY be a cpu issue? I've swapped ram and video cards, same problem.

any help plz? :-?All heatsinks properly attached?

What else is new besides the case?Raptor,

It's possible that the heatsink is not attached right, but I dont think so. The heatsink/fan I have has the most ridiculous attachment method. There are like 8 seperate lug nuts that you have to tighten - idk it's hard to explain. I have been monitoring the cpu temps all along, they are normal, and I kind of ruled out that because usually when the cpu is too hot symptons are usually a little different.. nothing else new besides case : \ case fans are new : Pto reinforce my video card theory,

I unscrewed the risers a little bit and didnt put any screws in the motherboard. (computer is on it's side)

Just 5 minutes ago I tightened screws into motherboard, a SECOND later it froze.Did you DAMAGE ANYTHING when moving the hardware but still tried to install it?

If you think the videocard is the culprit, try a PCI videocard or make use of your other PCI-E slot. Whatever kind of mainboard you have. This does seem like a problem with the graphics card.

If the graphics card's fan wasnt properly installed then it would heatup and not work at all, but there is a chance it would work for a while and then shut down so its possible. Can u check the temps and get back to me?

But i think that there is a problemw with the graphics card itself. Did it work well in the other case?
Can u get a sub 50$ PCI card to see if maybe its a problem with the AGP one.

This dosent have to mean that the heatsink(s) are put in wrong, but that maybe there is a problem with the thermal paste or something similar.Well first of all I should add that sometimes after it locks up, upon restart bios will say 'overclock failed!'

i erased bios so obviously i'm not overclocking..

Well my theory is that the motherboard is too close to the side of the chasis therefore my AGP card cannot go all the way in the slot. I know the card itself is just fine, but I have no monitoring software for it, (do you recommend any freeware?)

I'm thinking about cutting off a small portion of the metal at the end of the card to give it more room.

Also, do you guys think it would be a good idea to test this and pull the card out while my computer is running to see if I get the same problem? I have no pci card at the moment.i would like to say that its not the video card.

to mentioned you a tech, so i'm sure you ran over the basic stuff, but just in case, here are a few things that i would look for:

-Make sure that the case and connections are clean.
-try a different power supply
-make sure that the MOBO is not tweeked or bending when in the case (you mentioned screwing it in and it shuting off)
-check your outlets in your wall... maybe move it to a different outlet.
-check to make sure that your not having a short circut

The only real thing that i might think of is you mention of risers and screwing the MOBO down. Make sure that it is not having metal contact the case. The quickest way i can think to solve this is to take it out of the case and place it somewhere safe (anti-static bag), then see if it happens. if it does, keep it there and try a different power supply.Quote

That's not good. It should go in all the way. What kind of screws did you use?
not sure exactly what kind of screws, the ones that came with the new case.

my speaker to connected to my case says 'cpu failed due to overclocking' and it says the same thing in bios sometimes, this must be a cpu issue? According to my temps tho it never overheats.Make sure you properly configure the BIOS. Load its default values and then reconfigure it from scratch.

Here's the problem.

I have installed a Nexxtech USB 2.0 Cardbus (N2PUCB) on my HP omnibook 6100 laptop, when I TRY to connect my Adaptec Gamebrige (1400) it actually shuts off the USB cardbus, I know that it's not either of them being broken persay, as I can use a USB key with GOOD results, and install the gamebridge on a friend's laptop. But I can't figure out why they won't mesh. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : New build...bad power supply??

Answer»

I took my friend to Microcenter last night to get parts for a new computer. She's on disability and uses it mostly for Pogo games and email and such. The salesman there put together a system for the budget she had. They then assembled the motherboard, processor and memory and did a post test. I brought everything home, put it together and PLUGGED it in. Switched on the power supply and nothing....no lights, no fans, nothing. It's an El Cheapo Deluxe case that came with a 450W power supply. Is the power supply the obvious problem and can I do anything to check that it is?

ECS GeFORCE6100SM-M motherboard with integrated video.
AMD Sempron 3400 processor
1GB Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 memory
WD Cavier 250GB SATA drive
XION Solaris case w/ 450 W

I'm going to call Microsenter when they open but I thought maybe there was something I could try first.
Thanks. This is a new computer and tested fine at the store before bringing it home...right?

Just a shot in the dark, but have you checked the wall outlet where you have it plugged in? Is the power to that outlet controlled by a switch on the wall? If so, you may want to see if the outlet has electricity going to it by plugging something else into it. If you're using a surge protector...is the surge protector turned on?

If worse comes to worse...you can always take it back to the store...that's your best bet since it is under warranty.

Keep us posted...From my experience MicroCenter builds ROCK solid machines that run very well...but everyone has a bad day from time to time.
I'd say return it immediately and tell them to upgrade the PSU.I used the same power strip my monitor and printer is on for my computer so I know I'm getting power. I EVEN switched outlets on it to make sure. I just got off the phone with Microcenter and they said just to leave it all assembled and bring it back for a diagnostic. They said it seems like a bad psu too. I'll let you all know when I get back. Thanks for the input.OK, I'm EMBARRASSED. Apparently I had a connector from the front panel to the motherboard on backwards. And I double checked everything, too. Guess that's what I get for trying to do things at 2 AM..lol Anyway, it's all fired up, OS installed on the SATA drive, putting other things back.

One more question.....the SATA drive will be the new boot up drive. Now can I add the OLD PATA drive on the IDE channel and run some of the stuff I have on it without the 2 systems clashing? Or do I have to reinstall the rest of the programs on it?

Solve : stupid question about 5.1 sound?

Answer»

Hi, I have a very limited knowledge about computers but one thing I do know is that I need some new speakers. I found some I like which are these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-X-530-Multimedia-Theatre-Speaker/dp/B0006LCMK4/ref=sr_11_1/026-4825589-7093230?ie=UTF8

which I think are 5.1 speakers. I UNDERSTAND that this means you need some kind of a driver in order to use all of the speakers. I have a laptop (Asus M5N) which has an internal sound card driver thing of some kind, which is a Soundmax Integrated Audio 5.12.01.4010 - is there any way I can tell whether this is 5.1 compatible?

I don't want to have to buy a new soundcard. When I looked on the soundmax website, it seemed to say that if I used a codec AD1980 then I would be able to use 5.1, however, I could not FIGURE out where to get this codec from (or whether it was a physical thing, or a downloadable thing (which is what I had assumed it would be, having downloaded codecs in the past)).

I hope my question makes vague sense. I would be really grateful for some help with what is probably an INCREDIBLY dumb question.

Many many thanks in advance

JaneDoes it have 4 audio connectors?Uh, no, I don't think so. It has what I would consider to be a regular audio socket on one side. I plug either headphones (regular ipod headphones, not ones with a big plug) or my current (defunct) speakers into this plug. The speakers I have right now, the wire goes to one of the speakers and from there this speaker connects to the subwoofer and the second little speaker.

So, I think not. I have had a look and this is the only socket for speakers (there is one next to it for a microphone, but I am guessing that is not much good).

Would I need more than one socket for 5.1 speakers?

ARe the ones at the moment 2.1 speakers? Then you won't be able to connect 5.1 surround speakers. The soundcard does seem to be able to support them, though.

Quote

The SoundMAX-class audio codec features 6-channel 5.1 surround sound output, 8 channel 7.1 surround output, array microphone input

I doubt you can connect a 5.1 speaker without buying an external soundcard, though.Well, you won't be able to install an internal sound card in a laptop, so forget that idea. As far as I know, you would need two outputs for 5.1 speakers. These outputs would most likely be called Line Out and Rear.

Edit: edited to specify "internal sound card".Quote

Were you trying to prove me wrong once again?

There are external soundcards. They are either USB or PCMCIA and Creative makes them.

Line out is not used for 5.1 surround sound.

Subwoofer/Center, Rear and Front are.A USB sound device such as Turtle Beach TBS-1122-01F 7.1 Channels USB Interface Audio Advantage Roadie - Retail or Turtle Beach/Voyetra
Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro Virtual 5.1 Surround Sound Channels USB Interface Sound Card - Retail may do the trick.

Edit: Oops, didn't see your last post before I posted this. Hi, thanks for the replies, I think I understand.

One thing I am not so clear on --- does the external sound card that you are talking about have extra sockets into which I could plug all the extra wires?? I did not realise that sound cards contained sockets, but in order for me to be able to use it with these speakers, I guess it must??

Thanks in advance for clarifying this one.Quote

It'll have more jacks, yes. INSTEAD of just stereo/microphone, it might come with Rear/Front/Subwoofer(Center) and Line-in. Or even more, depending on what you buy.You might be able to use 5.1 sound depends on your sound card or mb, i have a bsoindcard biult in to mother board, and i can plug the rear speakers in the lin in jack, just have to run the speaker setup wizardi doubt that her Laptop would have that, and if it did, i think i would be too complicated to be worth it. I would consider myself easily able to hadle it, but would think it too much of a hastle to do so.

They are all right about the external soundcard. I found that i favor the ones that slide into the slt on the side of most laptops. Your's should have one or more as well. Normally they are about the width of a credit card and have a small button that allows you to eject the plastic protector and insert a card. The company 'Creative' makes nice easy to use, good sounding ones. I would look there, that way you can easily keep it with your laptop and not worry about an extra bundle of wires and pieces. But that's just me Its possible that the sound card might have a digital or optical out that would support 5.1 if output to a digital amp, its an ASUS laptop, there in the Higher Price Bracket right?

Im trying t oget around the sound max website to find out waht card she has , but its sooo slow

Solve : Removing AT power connector?

Answer»

Hi
After searching for an hour or more I came across this forum of experts. If there any oldies (like me ) then I'm sure you can help with my simple question.

I'm trying to replace a Baby AT motherboard with another not so ancient one. I'm having trouble removing the 2 X 6 PIN AT power connectors. There's a picture of one here http://www.pcguide.com/ref/power/sup/partsMotherboard-c.html The first PHOTO about half way down the page. [edit: corrected url]

The hidden rear side has a clip but despite lifting that out and pulling on the connector it wont come out and in fact the motherboard is flexing. Does the front part of the socket have to be lifted away from the plug? Any tips to get this out without damaging the motherboard (in case the new m/b doesn't work) are gratefully RECEIVED.

Thanks for reading

Alan, UKActually those inserts need to be pushed in before pulling up...sometimes a small screwdriver pushing into the clip will do it...

But be careful.Quote

Hi Patio, thanks for a quick response.

I corrected the url (web site was using frames) It's http://www.pcguide.com/ref/power/sup/partsMotherboard-c.html

Do you mean those serration looking "teeth". Are they on the plug?

Edit: Duh! I've just looked at the "new" m/b and I can see the teeth are on the socket.
I've tried with s small screwdriver pushing down on the teeth to provide OPPOSITE pressure but no joy. There is a very tiny gap at bottom of the power plus but surrounding components stop be inserting anything there. Hmm, I'm stuck in more sense than one!

Cheers
Alan
Now removed!

I managed to make a tiny gap between the plug and socket. As the socket was on the edge of the mobo I removed the adjacent PSU and was then able to insert the blade of a small screwdriver in the gap and twist it.

On the "new" mobo the socket is in the middle of the board and the same technique will require all the memory boards to be removed. If it works I think I will get a more meaty ATX PSU and use the alternative 20 pin socket.

Solve : Graphics problem?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with my graphics. I just bought an Nvidia 8600 and it is supposed to be really good. ( DDR3 and what not) When I play games it should definitely be able to handle, Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2142, I get jumpy, jerky graphics. I don't know what the issue is and I was wondering if someone could help me. Thank you in advance!

Specs:

Intel Celeron 2.6gHz Processor
2gB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
400 Watt power supplyIt could be either of 2 problems.

1. Your CPU is not powerful enough. a 2.66Ghz Celeron should have a pretty hard time running any card, but I think you should still be able to get 30 FPS, so I'm not sure.
2. You PSU is not powerful enough. You need a total of 22A, or 25A to be safe on your +12v rail(s). I'm GUESSING you have something like 18A. Either scan the label on the PSU and tell me the details, or tell me it's NAME, and I'll check it out for you.Quote from: Jess607 on September 21, 2007, 05:18:37 AM

Can you cite some reference(s) to support that statement? On http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8600_8500_faq.html, it says:

Q: What are the recommended power supplies for the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS cards in single and multi-GPU configurations?
A: GeForce 8600 GTS requires a minimum 350W or greater system power supply for a single card or 450W or greater system power supply for SLI.Well I dont think 400W of power can handle all of his computer equipment (USB, Processor, RAM, CPU Fan, other Fan(s)) I suggest that you upgrade your CPU and Power Supply to 500W or more and for the CPU, a Intel Core 2 Duo if possible, if not a Pentium D would do the job.CRB2008, go here and get an actual number on power USAGE for your current or prospective system: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp I think you'll conclude you're power supply is quite adequate. But, keep in mind, quality is an important factor. If you have a very cheap power supply, consider getting a better one. By cheap, I mean be cautious about any units costing less than about $40.Quote from: soybean on September 21, 2007, 08:07:59 AM

The wattage means NOTHING.
The 8600 GT (at stock) will require at least 22A on the +12v rails. Since his PSU probably has only 18A, it is not good enough. Not to mentiont that his CPU probably takes more power than current machines, as it is older and less efficient.Okay guys! Thank you a lot for the feedback. I have a SCANNED Image of the information on the side of the power supply. ( I took the stickers off and wrote it down. ) I have a 3.0gHz Intel P. IV on STANDBY, but I do not know how to install it. I made sure that it fits. ( I did some research and found it was an L755 so i bought a motherboard that had the same slot. ) At any rate, here is the scanned image to help you guys out.

If it's LGA775, don't buy a Pentium IV.

That PSU has 20A on it's +12v rail. You need 22A, but it may still be possible to run the 8600 GT on it. I'm not sure if you should risk it, or if you should buy a whole new PSU for just 2 amps. Your call.Quote

Oh, don't worry. It is from an older computer. So, lets say if the psu was good enough for the graphics card what would be another deciding factor besides the processor? I am fairly sure that my RAM is good enough. ( Given I did not buy it from the store, but rather salvaged it off the old computer. [2 gB of RAM] ). My Father said that the HDD could be a problem if parts of the disk are damaged or corrupt. Deciding factor to buy a new PSU?
I think that's about it. And there's really nothing else you can buy.

Solve : External Hard disk Drive problem?

Answer»

Hi, everyone. I am a new member in this forum. Hope that you can help me with my problem.

My problem is with my external hard disk drive. Once I plug it into the USB port, I can't accces the content of the harddisk drive by double-clicking it on 'my computer'. Instead a window will pop up asking me to choose a program to view the contents ('open-with' menu). I can view the contents by right-clicking it and then SELECT 'open'. I also noticed that on the right click menu, there is 'auto' and 'auto play' function. I have been using the external HDD for more than one year and this is the first problem that I encountered.

I have tried formatting the hard disk and use it on other computer and laptop but the problem still persist. Please Help! After you open the Hard drive From the auto play menu, can you access it as normal?

After this you Still cannot find it in my computer?

OK , after you plug in the hard drive and the auto Run come up ignore it, or close it.

Then open Control Panel, go to administrative Tools, open computer management

Find the Disk Manager on the list at the Left.

There should now be a List of hard Drives , and CD-Rom's on the Right

Find your USB drive in the List, right click on it, and click Change Drive LETTER and paths.

Then Give it a Drive Letter , and click OK.

you should now be able to see it in my ComputerDo you happen to have ACDSee on this machine ? ?

Or have you installed any new 3rd party MEDIA players ? ?

Solve : Can I use old heatsink and fan ??

I'm upgrading my CPU and I wondered if someone could TELL me WHETHER I need a new heatsink and fan, or can I USE the ONE that is currently inside my computer?it is much safer to use a new heat seak fan INSTEAD of an old one. When you buy a new CPU.. There should be a fan that comes with it inside the box.. Mine did it was an Intel Celeron 850mhz.. Unfortuantly it is to fast for any of my comptuers to take

If the CPU is not to faster then an old fan should be fine.

Example: Intel Celeron 400-600mhz the old fan should be fine

If you have a 1 ghz CPU and want to uprgrade to 2ghz then you should defitley get a new fan,There is no way to know unless u tell me the fan and the new cpu's names. So far,so funny. :-?

Solve : Humming in speakers????

Answer»

So within the past month my speakers decided that they want to do this annoying humming. Sometimes they do it when the pc has been on all day, then it could be on for a few hours, or it could be on for 10 MINUTES. Thought maybe they were heating up so I would turn them off for a couple of hours and that don't help, but i couldn't understand why they would do it after the pc has been on for 10 min on certain days and heat up. The sound otherwise is normal, good sound for the most part (if i didn't have the humming). There's no cracking noises, Iv'e unplugged them replugged them felt the wires unplugged the woofer plugged it back in....and i get no where. I didn't want to have to replace my speakers if they aren't the problem, but i don't know what else it could be. Is maybe just the woofer part bad? Or can the conection into the pc get bad?Has anyone ever had this problem occur?Probably interference and or faulty wiring.

No new stuff, no updates, we rarely ever use microwave (it's never bothered it before and the pc is in a completely different room) ummmm.....i can't think of anything at all THATS different. What i find weird is that once they start they don't stop untill the pc has been off all night. It gets a little bit louder too when a page is brought up, wether it be a web page or a game or even windows defender. It also has like a real slow faint pulse to it. It's weird and aggrivating. It's also an everyday thing too, but i never know when it will start. It started today around noon. Where do i go for sound card stuff? Store, online
? Could that be an issue, that my sound card is bad? Do those even go bad? I should have stayed in vo-tech.Any component including your speakers/and or your sound card can go bad...

I suggest trying each one at a TIME in a known working machine to diagnose further...

patio. 8-)Well so far the speakers themselves are fine and wires are not the problem. I do believe that the subwoofer is bad. It is NEXT in line to get checked.....after cars get taken care of. Thanks for help! I'll let you know if it is the sub or not. What speakerset do you have?Quote

If anyone can explain why a larger tv would have a lower resolution that would help. 2nd the 1366x768 resolution is not available on my computer. How can I work around that. My graphics controller is a intel 82845G.Simple.

The 19" LCD u have is NOT a TV. Why? It has no TV tuner. It is what is called a "computer monitor".
The 23-26" LCDs u want to purchase ARE TVs and so their resolutions are much lower than the resolution a computer monitor. Good TVs will have the resolution of 1366x768 (at a 16:9 aspect ratio) until they reach the size of over 70", so its the best u can do. However many TVs today also support resolutions of 1280x720 (or 720p) and 1920x1080 (or 1080i and SOMETIMES even 1080p) for certain things, they are called HDTV but are actually just HRTVs (High-res/ High-def)
TV signals (cable and SATALITE) are still being trasmitted at 640x480 (or 480i) wich is the old standard, wich WOULD look worse as the size of the TV grows, so it is unfourtunate. However today u can subscribe to TV transmitted at up to 1080i in many parts of western society, and if u have an HDTV u can enjoy this.
Buying a smaller TV is always better for the quality of the image because if the TV is smaller, th image is less stretched, but if u look from the right distance, it will look the same. And have a bigger TV is a lot more fun and immersive.
Enjoy.

Solve : Quick question?

Answer»

My friend has a Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo. There is a 12 volt 4 pin power connector on the motherboard as well as the 24 pin one. The 20 pin power supply connecter goes into the 24 pin slot, while the 4 pin plugs in next to it to fill the last 4 pins.

Now there is that 12v 4 pin slot I was talking about. Is it required that one plugs into that? Because the power supply ony has the one..

p.s the power supply is a Roswell SLI ready.i believe that you are describing the EZ plug on the motherboard. does it look like the same plugin that plugs into your HARDDRIVE, floppy, cd-drive,etc.? because if it does, you are not required to plug any power into it, unless you plan on RUNNING 2 or more video cards.Hi Nuk1m

This is out of the M2N SLI Deluxe manual

These CONNECTORS are for ATX power supply plugs. The power supply plugs are designed to fit these connectorss in only one orientation. Finf the proper orientation and push down firmly until the connectors completly fit.

For a fully configured system, we rocommend that youuse a power supply unit that complies with ATX 12 volt specs 2.0 or higher or laterand provides a minimum power of 600 watts.

Do not forget the 4 pin ATX 12v power plug otherwise the system will not boot.

According to that, you probably do not have a proper power supply. Mine is 650 watts and it has the 4 pin ATX 12v connector.my power supply has the 4 pin connector, but only one and there are two on the motherboard. its 550 watts, i'm reading the manual and i dont see anything about 600 watts but I do see that it has to be 12v 2.0 compliant, which it is. ATX2.01 is in the name.i had the same problem, i know what you mean by the optional 4 pin connector sliding next to the 20 pin. This is so it can accomidate both 20 pin, and 24 pin motherboards.

But when i did not plug the aditional 4 pin 12v. into it designated spot (alway from the main ATX power inlet), my sytem did not function. If it were me, i might think about taking it back or bying a new one. It sounds to me that your motherboard is a 24 pin ATX, and your PSU (power supply) is a 20 pin power supply that might be able to be used on a 24 pin.

Power supplies are tricky. They are not as easy to pick out as most people think. You have to take into acount all of the conectors that you need. For example, only lately have power supplies came with SATA power supplies, but SATA hard disks have been around long before that, so it was really difficult to buy the correct PSU for your computer. You also mentioned that it was SLI ready. Again, this is something that needs to be taken into account. If your computer is going to have two video cards (SLI), then you are goint to need to also get a PSU that will support that. Your PSU needs to have more wattage output than your computer needs. Most of this you may already know, but its always good to hear just in case one fogets anything.

Again, i believe that you will need both the 24 pin connector (20 pin and the small 4 pin) AND an additional 4 pin connector. In my computer, i have a power supply that is 24 pin, and ALSO has a small 4 pin connector, but i have a 20 pin mobo, so it comes with an adapter that converts the 24 pin down to a 20 pin connector. You sould try looking for something like that.

Good luck.thanks for the advice, it made a lot of sense.

Ok here's why i'm worried. After hooking it all up the first time, (with no additional 4 pin) when I hit the power it would turn on for about 2 seconds, all the fans would turn on etc. Now after messing with it more, trying a different power supply, stuff like that, nothing turns on. Even on it's original configuration. I swear that I smell something funny when I hit the power but I might be crazy.

Did I short the motherboard? It's under warranty at least :pLOL!! That would totaly suck if i were to smell something come from my computer, i think i would have a heart attack, or maby kick it..lol

Ok, i would say as long as you plugged everything in correctly and did not foce anything, then you should be fine.

But i'm not sure how much you know about ems, but you could easily have done in your mobo (motherboard) if you touched it wrong. lol, yes touched. Make sure you are taking the proper precations when handling the computer stuff, specialy when dealing with the power supply.

That said, i was having the same difficulties and my hero Raptor (hehe) said to reset the CMOS settings. This might help, not sure, but its worth a try. There is a battery on your board. Make sure the power is UNPLUGED and take out the small disk shaped battery for about ten seconds or more, then put it back it. Plug all the stuff back in and see if it helped. If not see if there is a jumper that resets your CMOS, my jumper was right next to the battery and was labled. But make sure that it's the correct one. Look up your manual and which one it is. Mine was easy and was on my PC manufactures web site. www.HP.com or somthing of the sort, just searched for my motherboard and it should STEP by step instructions on how to do so.

If not, try unpluging everything except the CPU, the CPU fan, the RAM, and the PSU (power supply). If is still doesn't boot up, well *censored*, i don't know, say so ans maybe one of the really smart people will help you... hehehe

Good luck!

You need to connect both the 4 pin and 24 pin connector. It will say so in the motherboard manual as well.

The extra 4 pin power connector does not under any circumstance replace the +12V 4 pin connector.

Me again,

The manuall says recommend 600 watts or more.

Page 2-30, first item on page.

Also, on my M2N-SLI Deluxe, the ATX plug isn't near the 24 pin. It is on the top left hand corner of the M/B.(looking at the M/B in the case)

1- 4 pin in the M/B
The other 4 pin connector plugged into my video card.

My power supply does not have a 20 pin connector.

Hope this helps!!

need a new power supply. Man I can't belive this thing needs 600 watts! thats so much power, shits gettin powerful..

However i'm still concerned that I might of shorted the board, I can't get anything out of it, here's what I posted above:

Solve : Power for video card.?

Answer»

I was putting together a computer for my brother, I've put together computers before without hassle but that was a while ago. These days they gotta have extra power going to the video cards or something. The card is a Nvidia 8600GTS 256MB, the power cable look like a black plug with 6 connections in a rectangle shape (i.e. 2 ROWS of 3) which connects to the back of the card and it has 2, 3 connection white plugs coming out of it which will allow the standard 4 connection plugs such as the ones that go into the back of a CD/DVD Drive to be plugged into it. My question is do I need to connect both of these white ones or just one?"When in doubt, try it out"

Try both configurations; first using just one connector. If the video card FAILS to work, you KNOW you're supposed to use both. However, do not use both connectors first; if you use both and you're only supposed to use one, you'll overload the card with too much power, and POSSIBLY damage it.What does the video card manual suggest ? ?It actually didn't come with one. But it doesn't matter, I am currently running it with two under direction from the Nvidia forums and EVERYTHING is fine.If you have only an 8600 GTS, one 4-pin molex connector should suffice, but be aware that the usage of 2 of these is the norm.
Also note that if you do not already have a 6-pin power connector coming out of your PSU, you cannot run this card.

Solve : Crashing halfway through OS boot.?

Answer»

I probably did INSTALL it a LITTLE too strongly, but what's done is done. I ordered the NEW heatsink, and I won't be an idiot when INSTALLING it this time.

If it doesn't work with this new heatsink, then I have 2 other powersupplies to test it with.

And I did apply paste and I did use the heatsink, but when it kept shutting down, I took the heatsink off because I ASSUMED it was the processor overheating. I didn't turn it on again, obviously.

Solve : Computer Crashing?

Answer»

The past couple of weeks my computer has been crashing at random times. Most of the time, about 5 minutes into CS, it crashes, or about 10 minutes of the computer on, it crashes. When i try to turn it on, it turns on for about 2 seconds, then shuts back off. I have to wait about a minute, then if I'm lucky enough, it'll turn on. I just reformatted today, and currently running the Stock Windows XP Home edition, on a ECS 661FX-M, on board Video, 512 MB corsair stick. I believe that it may be due to over heating but I have no certain idea.Heat, bad RAM, and bad power supply are the most COMMON causes. This only happens during games?

What is the make and wattage on the outside of the power supply UNIT?

Test your RAM with a free download at www.memtest86.com

Take off the side of the case and blow a fan directly in there and see if it improves things while gaming.

Post back your findings. It doesn't only happen during games, but when i do play a game it does crash. All i know about my power supply is that it's 300W and the model is MDT-301.Alright so, I just went a good hour or two without crashing, then 5 minutes into CS, it crashed, and I had to wait about a minute to get back on. I assume it's most likely heating, I have a better PSU that came with the new case i bought and i'll try switching them.Let us know. Did you try any of the other advice, like the fan? That's pretty easy, and free. Well, I switched PSU's and it crashed about 10 minutes later instead of 5. I'll go ahead and try the fan thing.Check the fan on the vid card when you remove the side panel...

Might be a good time to do some housekeeping in there as well.

Make sure all power supply has been removed and take the neccessary ESD precautions.

A can of compressed AIR is a good tool for this. Do NOT use a vacuum.I recently messed with the bios and it got stuck on the boot screen, I had to reset the CMOS by removing the battery for a while, and it fixed all my problems, no more crashing.

Solve : printer error message?

Answer»

When trying to print an online page I have just had an error message - "Printing failed when STARTING the document" - this came immediately on top of the print preparation window. It happens with other web pages that I've tried. This has just happened out of the blue. Offline printing is ok.

Any advice?

I have Lexmark 1180 all in one.
AOL Broadband connection.
Firefox.
Are you saving the web page to the HDD before attempting to print it ? ?
It should work both ways but give this a try...THANKS for reply Patio. I hadn't been saving the page, just printing.

I seem to have found the answer to my problem though, after mucking about trying different things.

I found that things were ok USING IE rather that Firefox, then realising it must be some sort of setting error, I found in the print status menu window the printer name had options and mine had somehow been changed to "FAMILY Tree Maker Printer" (I had wanted a page from their website). When I changed the option back to Lexmark X1100 all was well. I don't know how the option came to be changed - never any problem before.

Incidentally, I didn't find any reference to printer options in any of the help menus that I tried.

Anyway all ok now.It sounds LIKE Family tree maker printer runs the printer while printing online...

Glad you got it solved. Stop by anytime.

Solve : Will This Mobo fit into this case??

Just ordered a case:

And plan on using this motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131572

Says the case will fit up to 11" X 12"

Well the mobo is 12" x 7"

Will it fit?Probably 12X11 depending on the orientation...both the MBoard and case are ATX so it will work.
Mini-ATX case would not.

patio. 8-)Yes it will, they are both ATX form factor. No PROBLEMS there.

By the way, I NOTICED Socket 754.. I would go for Socket 939 or 940.It's going into an arcade CABINET. Just running MAME so it doesn't have to be ultra-crazy-high-end What are you SPENDING on the mainboard and processor?I believe the total is $97 including shipping.Ah, nevermind. It'd be at least 40-50 dollars more if you'd use 939 or 940.

Buy a copy of Windows, format the drive and load it.

Quote

No, you cannot do that.
You can use your XP cd to format the drive, and you can install XP from your cd provided that the hardware MEETS the XP minimum specifications.

Microsoft permits users to run XP for 30 days without activation. However you will not be able to ACTIVATE the installed copy of XP, and the 30-day period will expire without activation, thereby causing you to LOSE the OS. Activation is permitted on one pc only at any time, I presume activation was necessary on your main pc.

To install XP put the disk in the cdrom and boot. If you cannot boot from the disk it might be necessary for you to change the bios setting to boot from the cdrom first.

In the long term you may WISH to donate some $$$ and buy another genuine Win.XP cd.

Good luckWhat is the manufacturers name and model number? :-?Win2K is an extremely stable version of Windows...
Did he give you the Win2K CD with the machine ? ?
If so just format and re-install.

If not call him back and ask for it.

Solve : Which is the better out of these 2 computers? (For Gaming)?

Answer»

I’ve been doing some research on getting a new PC for gaming and I’d like to know what you guys would recommend out of these 2. They are priced almost exactly the same, but I’m so poor with computers I don’t know which ones better.

PC 1:

Processor: Core 2 Duo E6700 4MB cache
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Golden Orb Cooler
Graphics Card 1: BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB PCI Express

Memory: 2GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX
Motherboard: Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus Socket 775
Hard Disk Drive One: 500GB Caviar SE16 SATA 300

PC 2:

Processor: Overclocked, Liquid Cooled Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz (1066MHz FSB, 2 x 2MB L2 Cache) @ 3GHz+*
Chipset: nVidia 650i Ultra
Cooling and Case: EAST Modded Titanium Zalman Zmachine GT1000
Power Supply: Corsair 620w HX Series ATX 2.2 Power Supply
Motherboard: EVGA nForce 650i Ultra (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Memory: 2GB CellShock/Mushkin 6400 DDR2 Dual Kit (2x1GB) 5-5-4-12

Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768MBGDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The first one has 2 graphics cards, so I would have thought that one would be better… But that’s a complete guess.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

(For those that want to know they come to £1500-£1600)They each have their good points.
Advantages of 1: Better graphics capabilities, more HDD space.
Advantages of 2: Liquid cooled (quieter and cooler) and overclocked (faster) CPU, RAID 0 HDDs for faster performance.

IMHO, the first is better, but pretty expensive, and way over the top for most people.Calum again hit it directly on the head.

I would choose the first one without a single doubt.

But, if you can, take the CPU (without the watercooling) from the second PC and use it to replace the CPU in the first PC.

Or better yet, just build your own PC. Best hardware, best prices, just BEST.perhaps I am not reading this right but, the second one only has 320gb instead of the 500gb the first offers. I'd rather have the first one, but I'd rather buy the second one. Oh and you can always overclock the first one yourself (I OC'd my 2Ghz AMD chip to 2.2GHz easily). Liquid cooling can be installed but will add to the COST. And you may want a system that can just be setup and be done with it. One more hint: try and get windows XP rather than Vista it's 4x faster.Quote from: linuxlover on September 19, 2007, 02:39:34 PM

Not 4x.. more like 1.5x.My bad, it's a 320Gb array. I read it as 2x320Gb RAID 0, it is in fact 2x160Gb.
So, I have edited my post to reflect that, thanks linuxlover.

Solve : RAM help?

Answer»

I just got a 512 MB RAM stick and I put it in my computer and tested it out. Well I've come to FIGURE out that I have to go by myself ANOTHER 512MB of RAM in order for it to work properly. Before I did anything to my computer I had 512MB of RAM. I have 2 264MB RAM cards. I tryed taking out 1 264MB RAM card and then putting in my new 512MB RAM card with my older leftover 264RAM card, because I have two 264MB RAM cards. I have that kind of computer that has to equal amounts of memory in each slot for it to work.

So after I figured that out I took my new 512MB RAM stick out and put the 264MB RAM stick back in with the other 264MB RAM stick.

Now I get this stupid little box that says "Microsoft .NET Framework" and it says something like " An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. Click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. "

So I click continue and the box will not go away.

Any help on installing RAM correctly? Can anybody help me fix this problem?

Because I'm getting another 512MB of RAM stick later and I'm going to remove both 264's. Because my computer has to have equal amounts of memory bandwidth in each slot. There's no such thing as a 264MB RAM stick.

I'm not sure what you are on about; the Microsoft.net framework error is not related to your RAM. Unless you damaged it. Diagnose it using Microsoft Memory Diagnostics(Click)People are so un-educated abt PC hardware now a days..

Did u really buy a 512MB RAM stick while not knowing exactly if it would work or not?

You cannot have 1x 512MB and 1x 256MB sticks on the same channel and im guessing u have only 2 slots for memory, right?

Your only hope for having more then 512MB total PC RAM, is buying another 512MB stick, but then u lose money on the 2x 256MB sticks, so UD have to sell them.

Solve : Nero burner?

Answer»

I have ACER travelmate 4252mlci model with 1.73GHz, 256mb ram and DVD/CD-RW Combo drive with NERO-7.5.1.1_eng. Here if i start WRITINGA CD it takes nearly 30 mins but the same data if i start writting from desktop it takes just 5-6mins only. And the desktop is of lower configuration then laptopthere you go.... good job! That is what we call "more info" .....hehehe.... just messn'

ok, in my humble OPINION, Nero 7 sucks!!! Nero 6 is good. For some reason, when they made 7 it bacame REALLY slow. Trust me, i have both! Ok, it sounds like you are just making data. Not MUSIC or video. If so again tell us.

If it were me, i would choose the right program for the job. If your making video compilations, then get nero 6, if your making music CD's, i would use a program CALLED Nero 6, and if your just doing data like files, folders and what not, there is this great program out there that is actually pretty common, i'm pretty sure is called Nero version 6. Not sure, so don't quote me on that. So yea, hope that helps.

Solve : easy questions... maybe?

Answer»

OK, here are some new ones that i need help on.

RAM #1-
I forget what way it works.... It better to get a higher RAM speed (ie: pc3200 instead of pc2700) even thought the MOBO only reads pc2700 max. That way, if you upgrade your COMPUTER you can keep the ram and use it for the new one.... i think i read that in my A+ book, but i cant remember and don't want to chance it.

RAM #2-
My computer manufacture states that the MOBO has a maximum capacity of 1 Gig (2x 512 MB), but when i look at the MOBO manufactures, they say 2 Gig (2x 1 Gig) and then small print saying that the PC manufacturer's maximum memory may differ.
-It even says this on HP's web SITE on their MOBO info page. What's up with that? Can i get 2 gigs? Or is it just the software.
I mean, if i load a different copy of windows, will it recognize the extra RAM?

Socket-
I was talking to someone the other day about SOCKETS, and they said something to the POINT that althought there is a socket 'A', there are different types... some numbers like 757 and 936.... (just throwing those out there)....
Is there different types, or is a socket 'A' only that, and anything else a different socket type?

Video output-
Is S-Video the same as HDTV? Or do they just have similer looking plugs?

General-
What is the meaning of life?
RAM #1-

Well, that depends. If u are using DDR2 and ur max is 667Mhz, then ur not going to buy 1100Mhz for instense., because its a lot more expensive. If u are using DDR and ur max is 333Mhz, then ur not going to buy 400Mhz because once u buy a motherboard that will actually be able to read DDR400, then 400Mhz will be old and cheap and u will want DDR2.
Remmember that DDR is not forward compatible, as in u cannot stick a DDR memory stick into a DDR2 memory slot, for they are different sizes.

RAM #2-
My computer manufacture states that the MOBO has a maximum capacity of 1 Gig (2x 512 MB), but when i look at the MOBO manufactures, they say 2 Gig (2x 1 Gig) and then small print saying that the PC manufacturer's maximum memory may differ.

I doubt that the motherboard will not be able to recognize a 1024MB stick of RAM. Usually those things are written before that much RAM is out, or widely distributed in retail, but they actually do work with the motherboard. The only way that it wouldnt is because of software limitations of course, and again, i doubt that it will not recognize the stick.

Socket-
I was talking to someone the other day about sockets, and they said something to the point that althought there is a socket 'A', there are different types... some numbers like 757 and 936.... (just throwing those out there)....
Is there different types, or is a socket 'A' only that, and anything else a different socket type?

There are different types of sockets. A, 478, 939, 775, AM2, 1207 etc.
They are all different sizes and u cannot insert a CPU that is a certain socket onto a different socket.

Video output-
Is S-Video the same as HDTV? Or do they just have similer looking plugs?

S-Video is a way to connect certain items, i.e. PC, console, DVD etc. to the TV in order to use the TV as a screen for them. S-Video is the main way to hook-up things to SDTV, or TVs that are not HD.
An HDTV is a TV that supports higher resolutions than 480i, wich are today 720p and 1080i. Some TVs can handle 1080p. HDTVs have S-Video inputs like SDTVs, but also have HDMI for audio, composite etc. wich have better quality.

General-
What is the meaning of life?

"The meaning of life is a number, and that number is 1" - Weasel, "I Am Weasel"OK, i guess i should put my question, instead of being general...hehe

Ok, i am about to upgrade my computer, so i am thinking about buying some new RAM, because i will as soon as i get my new MOBO, and am wondering if i should wait till i get the mobo, or just buy it now and use it in both the computer i am running, and the new one. (i have already reserched it and know what mobo i am buying, i know what type of RAM it needs, and all that good stuff)
So really, should/can i buy a DDR400 (PC3200) ram stick for my older computer that can read up to DDR333 (PC2700), so that way when my new mobo comes, i can jsut place it in there? I don't mind the money issue, as long as it works. Like i said, i am going to have to buy the memory anyways, i just want to know when, if i buy it now, i want to know if i can use it.

About the RAM #2...
are you quite sure of that? I again am going to buy memory and would be bummed if it didn't work in my comp.

Socket...
I know that there are different types of sockets. What i mean is that, are there subcatigories, like a socket A-775?
Or is a socket A and a socket 775 two sepperate types all together? If i go to a store and ask for a CPU fan for a socket A, and their response is... "what type of socket A?".... are they retarted, or am i UNEDUCATED? (hehe)

Meaning to life...
I thought it was 42? And I R not a baboon! Are these homework questions?well, i am at home, so yea, i gues these are homework questions.

Ok, no its not for a class or anything. Like i said i want to upgrade my RAM, and i want to know......

If my curent MOBO reads at a max of PC2700, is it ok if i buy PC3200? Will it work but only at PC2700? This way when i get my new motherboard, i can use the RAM that i bought.

With the socket question...
It was one of those things that i thought differently, and want the right answer to set my mind at ease. The PC3200 will clock down to 2700 if that's what the board supports...

Socket A has had 6 or 7 revisions with the latest being a 939...

Their latest socket designstion is called AM2...

Solve : Broken hinge??

Answer»

I managed to acquire a Toshiba Tecra 8100 for free. The specs are as follows:
500MHz Pentium III
24(?)x CD-ROm
192MB PC100 RAM
20GB hard drive
8MB S3 SavageMX
14.1" XGA TFT LCD
Windows XP Home Edition (SP2)

Now i have a few problems:
1. (the biggest one) The screen is very wobbly, and won't stay open past a certian angle. There is at least 2" of play in the hinges. I'm assuming one of them is broken. How hard would replacing the hinges be on this particular computer, and could I do it myself?

2. (a smaller, more trivial problem) When I wake the computer up from standby, sometimes the LCD doesn't come back on. I can usually fix this by pressing Fn+F5, which switches between the external MONITOR (which doesn't exist) and the LCD, and it comes back on.

3. Very rarely the screen will go completely blank. I can remedy this by pressing the little switch that puts it in standby when the screen is closed.

THANKS!

-John

btw this is a pretty nice computer for free! :DHave you visited the manufacturer's website yet ? ?

patio. 8-)yes but maybe i could look harder lol... the most important question i have is about the hinges, which the website (to my knowledge) has nothing about. I'll check harder though.hmmm this helps with one of my problems http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soid=108217&moid=1073769806&[emailprotected]@[emailprotected]@&BV_EngineID=cccfaddjdgkffjjcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0&ct=SB
but doens't really tell me how to stop it from happening again...Scroll down the page to the 8100

http://www.asklaptopfreak.com/laptop-notebook-help/category/loose-display/I read that ALREADY, but thanks! Last night I was able to determine that it's the right hinge that's at fault. I closed the display (and turned off the computer OBVIOUSLY) and shook the computer and I can hear something making a "clink" noise where the right hinge is. I don't hear anything moving freely around, but i can hear something is loose. Thanks for the replies!

Solve : ? about replacing an erased hard drive?

Answer»

Hi,
I had a 19.1 GB Gateway Desktop w/ WIN ME installed on it. I tried to install XP on it, not KNOWING that I needed a bigger hard drive, and (making a long story short) ended up erasing my hard drive. I bought a new computer and gave the Gateway to my cousin and now I'm trying to help her w/ fixing it. :-? (and I don't know tooo much about the hardware side of computers lol)

I was just wanting to know, could she replace the old, erased hard drive with a new Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80 GB Internal Hard Drive and then install Windows XP on the computer? Would we need anything else (like a boot disk) in order to install the hard drive? Sorry if these questions sound dumb but I'm clueless when it comes to ACTUALLY programming the computer lol.

As far as we know, the hard drive is erased. When you turn the computer on, the Gateway screen comes up and then it goes to a DOS screen (and I know nothing about DOS!!) I know I can physically replace the hard drive, I won't know what to do if a DOS screen comes up lol.

Anyway..... *hopefully I don't come off as a complete idiot* lol Any help at all is appriciated! Thanks in advance!

~ KimmyThe new hard drive will be no problem at all. No DRIVERS needed to install it. You do however have to format it so after you have installed it in the machine boot up with the Western Digital cd in and run the disk prep tools.

As to XP you might want to hold off on that since it was an ME machine and the hardware requirements might be a bit slim.

Try and go for Win2K it's stable and basically XP without all the eye candy...

patio. 8-)

p.s. You can remove the old HDD for now until you are up and running...You can then add it on as a slave drive and use it for extra storage.

Remember to set the jumper on the WD new drive at master and hook it to the end of the flat RIBBON cable on IDE1

p.s.s. The power connector (4 pin is flat on one side) flat side towards the bottom of the drive. The ribbon cable can onlu go in one way as well there is a stub in the center that goes towards the top of the drive. Take your time pay attention and don't force anything and you should be runnin in no time...if you would like to format and install windows to a new hard drive (as well as reformat and reinstall windows to an old hard drive) just follow these steps.

1. enter computers BIOS ( enter by tapping the button specified on your screen. it should say something along the lines of "hit __ to enter BIOS" or "hit __ to enter setup.") almost every make is different.
2. while in the BIOS, select something along the lines of "boot order" or "boot prioity." (again almost every make is different)
3. make your cd drive boot first. (by setting it in the first slot)
4. save settings and quit (COMP should restart)
5. your comp will now boot off of the windows cd
6. follow the onscreen instructions that the windows cd supplies

and remember, format means it erases EVERYTHING!

if any of this is confusing, tell me where i lost you and a will clarify.19 GBs is more than enough for XP or W2K (Preferred )
If you have erased the entire 19GB's and it still complains you need to run HDD diagnostic tools on the HDD as it might be failing..You may be trying to install it on a smaller partition too.

Solve : new motherboard can't see HDD's?

Answer»

Bear with me. I don't have all the specs off the top of my head and I'm on a different computer. The best I can remember.

Motherboard - Abit AN8 32X
CPU - Athalon XP 64 3800+
RAM - 4 sticks of Kinston 512 (not sure of the remaining specs)
HDD #1 - WD 250Gig
HDD #2 WD 80Gig
Power supply - Thermal Take 480w (silent power)
video card - ATI Radeon 1600+ PCIE

Anyway, I'm carrying over the floppy, dvd, and cd-rom/burner to this new board. The power supply, 2 sticks of RAM, and the Hard Drives were from my old computer. I put it all together and power it up. BIOS comes up and I go though the setup. This board has an "auto-detect" feature that looks for your hard drives, might be common but I don't know. The first time through it detects both drives and I save and exit. Try to boot windows and windows goes into initial setup and then says that it did not detect any hard drive. Go back into BIOS and Primary IDE MASTER and Slave show "NONE". I attempt Auto-detect again and now it does not see my HDD's. I have checked power connections, swaped cords, tried IDE2 slot, and they don't REGISTER. I can hear them turning. Are they fried? I'd be grateful for any help can anyone give me, Thanks.

Did you choose save and exit?

If you just ESC out of the BIOS it might choose Discard changes and exit.

Try Raptor's advice and introduce only one HDD at a time...sometimes the BIOS can get confused.
If the master HDD still has an OS on it installed on the old MBoard you are going to have PROBLEMS...is this the situation here ? ?

patio. 8-)Sorry I didn't reply right away. I had to go help my parents cut downed tree limbs from that freak snow storm in Buffalo. My master HDD does have Windows XP Home on it. I am going to try to go into the Bios, restore defaults, and then try again. What are your suggestions about the Drive with the OS on it?

I'll let you know what happens.

ThanksQuote

Thanks

I didn't suggest you to load default values, I asked you something else. But you can try regardless. You should only hook up the XP HDD as a slave until you are able to back up what you need from it...coming from another MBoard/build it probably won't boot correctly and you risk corrupting and or losing your data...

patio. 8-)Patio + Raptor,

Thanks for your help, and I hope you didn't think that I wasn't doing what you suggested. Anyway, A short update to my issue. I attempted all that the both of you suggested. Initially, the BIOS did see the master, but it wouldn't boot (as patio suggested), the slave did not have enough space on the disk to accept a OS, so I'm going to bite the bullet and install a 2 new Seagate Baracuda SATA HDD's, and attempt to recover what is on both old IDE HDD's later. How would you rcommend doing that?

ThanksThe most painless way would be to install Only 1 of the SATA's and get everything running properly...

Then power down, introduce the IDE with XP as a slave drive on the secondary IDE channel and use the Seagate CD that came with your new SATA drive to " clone " the XP install onto the new Seagate.

Then remove the slave, re-boot to the SATA and make sure everything is running properly.

Then install in order : the 2nd SATA...

The 2 IDE drives...

And copy away to your heart's content.

patio. 8-)How are your jumpers set?Which Jumpers? The jumpers on the back of the drives... No wonder it does not work, they are probably both set to Master on the same cable.

Make them Master and Slave. You may have to remove the drives in order to read the instructions on printed on top of them.Raptor,

The jumpers on the drives are set correctly, Master and Slave. The IDE cable is connected correctly as well. There are numerous jumpers on the motherboard as well, I just didn't know which jumpers you were refering to. This all kind of moot anymore because I've ordered 2 new drives and I'm going to install them as soon as they arrive. Thanks for your help.

You still didn't answer my very first question, though.

Solve : cannot copy files to cd?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and although i can play CDS and dvds my computer will not let me transfer data to a cd. it shows that everything is functioning properly and that i have the best driver loaded for my system. when i try to copy pics to cd it doens't even give me the option and when i try to copy straight to the drive it doesn't recognize that there is a cd inserted, i have tried multipe cds.1. Are you using recordable CDs?
2. Your CD drive is a writer?

yes to both. i previously used it to back up all my photos, now it seems to have just stopped.maybe drive has failed. Is it very old? What is the MAKE and model?

What burning program do you have ? ?the computer is a compaq presario and it's from 2005 - why would it allow me to play cds and dvds but not burn discs??
i don't user any program i just transfer them to cd from "my pictures" in windows.
i tried to do it through photoshop but that did not work either.DLoad and install CDBurnerXP Pro...it's FREE.
Read some of the help files and in one DAY you will be burning anything to your heart's content...
It works far more efficiently than XP's built in burning capabilities.
Good Luck and let us know.thanks...i'll try itQuote from: ama on September 01, 2007, 01:14:55 PM

why would it allow me to play cds and dvds but not burn discs??

Because CD and DVD writing drives have lasers for "burning" (writing to) disks that are separate from the ones used for reading from them. And they do burn out sometimes.

Unfortunately, not everything can be fixed by a software download... If it a desktop Presario, dvd writers (that also write CDs) are quite cheap nowadays, and even if it is a laptop, they aren't all that expensive.

That rules out the laser then... Hey there...I realize this has been solved but one small detail was left unchecked
Right click the driver under "My Computer" and select PROPERTIES, then select the RECORDING tab and make sure "enable recording for this drive" is ticked

mine turned it self odd sometime nd it took me weeks to get it right
