Solve : Microphone Recording Problems? |
Answer» I don't know if this would be proper on this forum because I don't know if it's a problem with my microphone or with Windows or the sound card or something else, but here goes. On my old computer under the same set up my studio microphone worked fine but now on this computer under Windows 7 it does not. When noise suppression is turned off, my microphone only sends input to the left channel but when noise suppression is on it sends to both left and right channels. I have the microphone hooked up to a whatever the plug is called on studio mics to RCA converter and then to a miniKaosPad and then a line in cable ultimately running to the sound card if that helps at all. I'm wondering though if there's some tweak in Windows 7 I can modify to fix this because noise suppression is cool and all for getting rid of the static from my miniKP but it muffles my voice noticeably and when I sing, notes I hold for longer than a couple of seconds are also suppressed by noise suppression. I have audio software to do noise REDUCTION and remove the static manually so I don't really need the automatic noise suppression to begin with. When I only plug the microphone partially into the converter this problem is alleviated but this seems like I'm only putting a band aid on a major wound to fix it. |

Solve : CPU heat sink question? |
Answer» Does anyone think that I would have a problem if I upgraded an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ CPU to an AMD Athlon X2 6400+ without changing the heat sink and fan? (The 4200+ is running with STOCK cooler). To answer my own question, no. The old processor is a 65 Watt the replacement 125 Watts... And I hear AMD don't give much head room with their coolers. Stock coolers are never very good. Good enough to get the job done to a point. You may be correct there Quaxo in regards to AMD...but in my EXPERIENCE since Quad cores were rolled out i have had zero issues with the iNtel stock coolers... Built quite a few of them and only 1 had slightly out of range temps...turns out it was indeed a faulty factory unit that was below RPM rates specified. |

Solve : old floppy drive yo new mb? |
Answer» hello, i have a 34 pin floppy drive and i'd like to use it on my new motherboard. do i find a ribbon for 34pin to the 40 pin motherboard. i hate to just toss it. Given that your chosen route (CABLE/adapter) is going to entail a probable purchase why not spend the money that gives you more ongoing flexibility. The AMOUNT of money spent will not be that different if you purchase an external USB floppy drive instead. You will be advancing with technology instead of regressing. truenorth As i explained to you in Chat you need a proper floppy drive cable...and it needs to be CONNECTED to the floppy controller slot on the MBoard...I doubt there are Floppy to IDE adapters, mostly because they would be of limited utility, and would require at least as many solid-state COMPONENTS as a standard USB Floppy drive, making their sale relatively moot. I doubt there are Floppy to IDE adapters, mostly because they would be of limited utility, and would require at least as many solid-state components as a standard USB Floppy drive, making their sale relatively moot. Both my present Shuttle and the previous one have no floppy header on the motherboard, but they are SFF (Small Form Factor) machines To address the OP's problem, you may still be able to pick up LS-120 drives on Ebay or elswhere. These connect to an IDE cable and can read floppies. I am finding that none of the latest motherboards have the FDD connector/controller. Some don't even have the IDE connector/controller. Seems to be the case with branded machines, too.Quote from: Computer_Commando on January 26, 2011, 10:52:01 AM I am finding that none of the latest motherboards have the FDD connector/controller. Solve : HP A335W will not turn on? |
Answer» I think my motherboard has gone out. The green light by the power supply lights but as soon as I press the power button it goes out. I can unplug a 4 WIRE connector (2 yellow and 2 black wires) from the motherboard and the power supply light will stay LIT when I press the power button, but the computer does not come on. As soon as I plug the 4 wire connector back in it makes a small popping SOUND (like a short) and the power supply light goes out.Sounds like a short circuit on either the PSU or motherboard. You can try using a different power supply (although a little risky if your motherboard is shorting them out). Or ask a LOCAL PC repair shop to TEST your power supply. |

Solve : Improving CPU speed? |
Answer» Hey all, I have a quick question about CPU speeds. Hey all, I have a quick question about CPU speeds. Quote I've read a bit about overclocking, but i'm hesitant to do that because i'm using an All-In-One PC, so I imagine the overheating problem will be similar, if not worse, to a laptop. I have a game i'd really like to improve the quality of when running on my PC. The system requirements for this game suggest it needs a 2.6ghz processor, whereas mine is 1.5 (It's an AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual Core Processor 3250e). The game runs without a problem, it's just incredibly (for want of a better word) bitty and the frame rate seems really poor.Yes, most all in one machines have terrible cooling solutions normally. I would strongly recommend against doing any OC at all. Quote I've taken pretty much every step I could think of, altering the visuals to favour performance over looks etc, but it's still a very fidgety game play situation. If I was to look at upgrading to a better processor, how easy would that be for an All-In-One PC?Most all in one pc's are fairly limited in the upgrades that can be done because like a laptop the hardware is usually pretty specific. Quote I'm using a HP Pavilion MS215uk model, with Windows 7 and a 64bit OS. Is there anything I can do without upgrading the hardware? If not, how would I go about upgrading the hardware itself? Thanks very much.I would recommend using a different machine for the really high end games. I don't know what your budget is to WORK with, or what other expectations you may have for a new system. If this is EVEN a possibility then you can post a bit more information for us.I was afraid that it might be pretty difficult, but it's not the end of the world. At the moment i'm a bit financially out of it in terms of being able to buy a higher spec computer, but that's ok too. I do have a side question though, in my RAM info, it says I have 2gb available, but that only 1.75gb is useable? In addition to that, when I check msinfo32 via the 'Run' service, it says I only have 709mb available physical memory ... is there anyway of boosting these to their maximum? EDIT: I've just researched some of this so, ACTUALLY, just looks like a case of reducing background programmes is needed. And actually, just to ask, what would be the most affordable way of buying some high end spec gadgets? It'd be cool to have a laptop or PC on which I can play better quality video games. Would it even be possible to buy a base unit and attach it to my all-in-one and use the all-in-one as a monitor?Windows 7 deals with memory allocation far differently than previous versions of Windows. There is also the probability that your all in one unit uses some of the RAM for video use. You can check what is running on the computer in the way of software that has been installed and may be running in the background using the Task Manager, and change the way the software starts using Quick Start Up. This can let you designate which software will start when you start up your computer. |

Solve : Intermittent boot problem.? |
Answer» Hi. DMA initialisation failure. Hardware. Motherboard or expansion cards. Power off completely (disconnect AC) and check all expansion cards are properly seated, especially the display card. If that doesn't fix it, if it has onboard video try using that instead with the display card removed. Try removing other cards e.g. network, sound, etc to see if the problem goes away. In the BIOS setup, disable all shadowing of expansion adapter ROMS. if none of these get you anywhere, and you have reviewed the information here... http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/beep/phoenix/phoenixGPBC06-c.html and here http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/sys_ExpansionCards.htm and here http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/gen_Failure.htm ... you may have a faulty motherboard. I don't suppose it's still in warranty? Quote This will happen 4/5 times and then it will boot normally. ...The only other thing I can think of is maybe the PSU is sluggish at bringing all the power rails up, but I think that's a long shot. Thanks guy's, it was a card not seatedThanks for posting back. Glad it's all sorted out |

Solve : PC will not start up after installing a ram stick? |
Answer» Make sure RAM is oriented properly, NOTCHES in bottom line up with tabs in slot. As you can see Where is the pic? Thanks for the picture commando, but I had already noticed that, I've been putting the stick in the right way for sure. My pictures don't seem to display on the forums, heres the direct link pic 1: http://img401.imageshack.us/i/p1030165l.jpg/ pic 2: http://img225.imageshack.us/i/p1030158z.jpg/BTW, your graphics card is AGP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_PortIt looks like the heat sink on your northbridge is loose. In fact, it looks like you've broken the things that hooks onto (not sure what to call those).YEAH, sorry, that's what i was saying earlier.. Is this computer done for now? I can try pin it back down.. somehow. I still have the parts that snapped off that HELD it down, maybe a bit of superglue? Also, the 2 other cards I have I don't use. Could I just get rid of them and eveything will be fine again in hope that they are the parts that are causing the problem? not sure if it shows in the picture but an AV card is plugged into the motherboard with this 4 pinned wire... quite tightly, should I just pull it out?? Clutching at straws hereIf you take it to a shop, they might be able to fix it. I have had a good look at it all now and theres nothing else missing/loose/rattling around apart from the hoops that hold the sink down. Is that an essential peice of hardware or might be be able to just get rid of it. Same with my modem card, AV component card.. Could I just get rid of them and only have my gfx card? As for taking it to a shop for repairs I'm wondering what kind of prices I might be looking at, since I don't know much about the insides of my computer I could easily get ripped off.. scammed Also taking into consideration my computer specsQuote from: Ted2 on January 26, 2011, 12:45:53 PM I have had a good look at it all now and theres nothing else missing/loose/rattling around apart from the hoops that hold the sink down. That heatsink must be locked down so the chip doesn't overheat. You can ditch the modem card if you no longer use dialup. Don't know what the AV component card is. Can't see it. You computer is probably 2003-4, not worth paying a shop to repair. You could buy a new Pentium 4 motherboard for about $50US & reuse almost everything else except AGP graphics card.IT WORKS!!!!!! I don't know why it works but it does! All I need now is to secure that heatsink down... You don't think I could get away with just leaving it as it is in the picture even if I only use the computer for no longer than 2-3 hours at a time? I know it's not something a technition would ever tell you to do, so maybe I wont get a reply on how to get this done?. but would a small smudge of glue not work or ruin the mobo? I'll need to find something to replace the two hoops you can see missing and stick something else to the board to replace them too. Well if anyones intrested in what I COME up with I'll post a pic of it hopefully working and not just a pic of a big ball of flames |

Solve : PC will not start Windows after wireless PCI card is removed.? |
Answer» Quote from: Blue Baron on January 22, 2011, 11:19:13 AM I think when I started all this it was disabled, but since setting everything to defaults, it is now enabled. Wants to be disabled. Also, is this just a RUN of the mill wireless adapter (plugs into a PCI slot) or a Mini PCI expansion card provided by the motherboard manufacturer? [I think they're called mini PCI slots, I could be mistaken]P.31 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/Alw_dt_Area_51/en/dm/dm_en.pdf Integrated Devices LAN1 & LAN2 Option ROM - Disable network controller boot option Inserting card could turn this off, removing card could turn it BACK on. It's the only thing that could stop the OS from booting. It's trying to boot from a network that's not there.I have replaced it with a USB connected wireless adapter. I did this after trying to remove the old card. The ability to boot from the network is disabled and stays that way whether the card is in or out. What happens if you unplug your hard & disc drives with the wireless adapter pulled out? Does the SYSTEM stop after completing the POST or do you receive the no boot device error? I'm not to sure what this would mean at the moment but it might give us some leads to work with.I have set the hard DISK as the first boot device and then under the hard disk boot options, set the add in cards as then boot device. As a result I got the no boot disk error. Quote from: Blue Baron on January 24, 2011, 11:31:36 AM I have set the hard disk as the first boot device and then under the hard disk boot options, set the add in cards as then boot device. As a result I got the no boot disk error. Not sure what this means at all...It was an attempt to see if somehow the computer had made the card a boot device.OK, the problem has been solved. I don't really understand what it was, but it seems that there was a conflict with SATA controllers, maybe because of the Promise RAID PCI card I have in there does not get along with the one that came on the mother board. In any case I went into the SATA settings and changed them from "All Enabled" to just SATA 0 enabled. The system sees my RAID as a SCSI drive even though it is SATA, but that left only the C drive as and SATA drive. I presume that by enabling only the SATA 0 controller, I was setting The C drive as the only SATA drive. What that all had to do with the wireless PCI card, I have no Idea. Thank you to all of you who tried to HELP me. I certainly learned a lot more about the BIOS than I did before.Quote from: Blue Baron on January 24, 2011, 10:24:17 PM ...1. because of the Promise RAID PCI card I have in there does not get along with the one that came on the mother board.1. This is the 1st time you even mentioned that. 2. BIOS sees any type of add-in controller card as SCSI, even if SCSI, IDE, SATA, etc.Yeah, that would have been helpful to know but then no one actually asked for his computer specs. Now that you know about the RAID PCI card, can you tell me what caused the problem with the wireless card? |

Solve : sony viao? |
Answer» hey im buying a new laptop but i know nothing about computers, i have my heart set on a sony viao (see i don't even know if i spelt that correctly), does any one know if they are worth the money and how much i should expect to pay for one My daughter has a Toshiba Sattelite Pro. It lastest 8 months before hardware failure. I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDX. It's lasted 16 years so far without hardware failure. Although I have lost a few screws. And my newer Satellite L300 (although it's not a "pro", and really I'd like to know what makes one computer "pro" and another not...) has lasted almost 3 years. That's my personal experience. Truthfully, I don't think it makes a *censored* bit of difference which brand you go with; you're not choosing any particular TYPE of hardware, you're just choosing a logo that will be on the machine and a support company. The manufacturers are totally different, and sometimes different Toshiba models, or Acer models, or what have you could have been manufacturered by the different companies. In the same vein, a certain model of Toshiba laptop could be the exact same thing as a Acer or Sony laptop, with a different case and of course different logo and BIOS boot image.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 10, 2010, 12:50:58 AM Reminds of the one time I had enough cash to buy band new car. Several years ago. Went to my local Dodge dealer and found a sharp little Dodge van and took it home. Some proud of myself to not have another clunker German car. Open the hood and find it was made in Japan! I have a Sony VAIO desktop (i know it is not a laptop) and some of the issues may be the same. generally speaking they tend to be more expensive than others of BASICALLY the same performance standards. So cost wise you can probably do better. Also with the desktop there have been some software compatibility issues (ACKNOWLEDGED by the software manufacturer) unique to the Vaio. Also the Vaio (may be similar with all Sony computer products) tend to be restrictive to certain hardware installations from the size or placement limitations.Somewhat as i have found on HP computers as well. If you are prepared to spend that amount of money on a laptop before you make your decision have a look at the new Apple laptops. I think as well as your "brand" concerns i think you will be best served by defining your known and anticipated needs for the laptop and emphasize your choice from that criteria. truenorth |

Solve : Crackling noise from video card after poweroff? |
Answer» I recently GOT 3 new nvidia geforce gt 240 graphics cards. I installed each of them in a different comp. Now, aproximetly 3 minutes after I turn off each of these comps, there is a crackling noise that comes directly from the video card and LASTS for about 15 seconds. It sounds like some food frying in a pan. I am just wondering if this is common. I have not seen any issues with the cards functionality.Return the cards under Warranty...this is not normal behaviour. PS. Let me guess...these came from eBay ? ? No. These came directly from newegg.com. Quote Of course it could be the MBoard as well...but unlikely if you've installed them into different rigs... No, it's not the MOTHERBOARDS because I had the comps running for a while without the graphics cards and there was no noise. Quote Return the cards under Warranty...this is not normal behaviour. I think I am going to wait until I see some problems because they perform very well and don't MAKE that noise when they are running. It seems unlikely that all three would be bad. Does any one have a geforce gt 240? Have you ever heard this noise? It's about three minutes after you power off the system. Something just occured to me. Wouldn't that be the time when the capacitors are discharging? Do caps ever make noise when they discharge?Quote from: Linux711 on December 14, 2010, 08:49:17 AM ...1. GeForce 240 is the graphics processor, not the maker of the card. 2. I suppose it's possible. 3. Only if they are high voltage or high capacity, which don't exist on a graphics card. PSU maybe? |

Solve : Printer Issues - label printer and inkjet? |
Answer» I have a zebra 450 label printer and an hp inkjet printer both installed on the same computer. When I use one and then switch to the other it carries over the format from the other. So if I print labels and then go to use my inkjet it only prints a 6x4 rectangle on the full sheet, but the second time I use it it's fine. It also does this when I use the inkjet and switch to the labels. It stretches it over several. Is there a workaround for this? I hate all the waste.Re-boot after switching printers...I have, but the problem is reoccurring. It's only an issue for the first copy once I switch, but I don't want to have to waste paper and ink. I have to alternate between the two often, so rebooting constantly isn't really feasible.Have you tried manually setting the paper size before you print to a particular printer? It only lets me reset it for the zebra label printer, but I have to do it every single time I switch back to it, and it won't let me do it for the inkjet. I have to print a page on it to clear the formatting carried over from the zebra. Is the HP inkjet the default printer, and have you set the paper size in its properties? I don't understand what you mean by "it won't let you" change the paper size for your HP. You haven't said what operating system you are using, but I'll assume it's some kind of Windows - you go into Printers and Faxes and double click on the icon for the HP and choose "Properties" from the "File" menu, and what, the paper size is grayed out?I'm running VISTA. It doesn't let me change it right after I use the zebra. When I go to change it the options are available but then when I click it a message saying something about a tray error pops up. |

Solve : Dead keyboard?? |
Answer» Having to use the on-screen KEYBOARD , so I'll be brief. I've been having issues with my keyboard, so its been washed a number of times now...with water. Bad move, I know. This most recent time, i did it with isopropyl, as that seems to be the recommended manner of cleaning a keyboard. Well, now the laptop its used doesn't seem to POST properly with it plugged in, and it'll freeze at the LOADING screen. With the board not installed, the PC posts and boots fine. I'm thinking the board needs to be replaced, but worried that with those other issues, that the laptop itself was damaged;I unplugged and plugged the board while the machine was running so I could test it. Thoughts? When a keyboard is 'washed', it needs to be fully dissembled and all moisture has to be fully removed be either forced air or centrifugal force. Or even both. All residue has to be recovered. Absolutely. |

Solve : How to connect analog TV to a VGA/DVI graphic card on PC?? |

Solve : HELP: Older HD TV to new graphics card? |
Answer» Tomorrow I am receiving a GeForce GT220 1 GB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 graphics card to install in my dell 4700 (XP Sp2, 1.5GBs RAM, 500GB HDD). The card has DVI, VGA, & HDMI outputs. My 1080i HD wide-screen Samsung TV has only component, s-video, and composite inputs (it's an older HD TV). I would like to use the component input, to get the best picture (HD), but can't afford to spend a lot of money. What do you suggest I use as a converter and with which connector? I've searched the internet/chat rooms, but nothing seems to match my SITUATION exactly. Thank you for your help! 1. The card has DVI, VGA, & HDMI outputs.1. Use adapter 2. Use component video 3. Component video is also high-def-capable, which MAKES it a good ALTERNATIVE when HDMI isn't an option. This three-jack connection splits the video signal into three parts (one brightness and two color signals). This analog connection delivers an extremely accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than S-video or composite video (below). Signal type: analog Maximum resolution: 1080p (however, many video components will only send video up to 1080i via component video) Need DVI to Component Adapter DVI-I to 3 RCA Component Cable - 6ft Thanks for your help, but I don't think this one will work either - "THIS CABLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER'S DVI PORT TO THE COMPONENT INPUT ON YOUR HDTV unless your video card supports component out function through it's DVI port" I'm pretty sure my graphics card doesn't have a 'component out' function - but I'll do more research.from a few quick searches, it SOUNDS like your card does support that capability.I use this guy http://tinyurl.com/2ulqvdg. Have not had a problem, going from VGA to Component. I have tried other products and this one is the only one that worked for me. I had a video card that said it would output component and I tried the cable only adapter and it never worked for me. I did not spend time trying to figure it out and just BOUGHT this guy. good luck |

Solve : I/O Address Range - Why?? |
Answer» Why do we have a range of port addresses just for one type of peripheral device? What's the point of leaving black spaces in I/O map?I was told by my teacher 8 years ago when asking a similar question at college that this is because there are plenty of port addresses to go around, more than needed to operate, so it made no sense to bind them all tightly together, but rather have them gapped instead. But this was just a verbal answer from the teacher with no physical proof to show as to why.An I/O address range "maps" device input to memory. Sort of like how in old computers you could use the built in BASIC to "poke" values directly into the Video memory; the video memory was on the video board, but it was "mapped" into addressable memory. An I/O address range "maps" device input to memory. Sort of like how in old computers you could use the built in BASIC to "poke" values directly into the Video memory; the video memory was on the video board, but it was "mapped" into addressable memory. That may cause confusion. The term Memory mapped I/O generally refers to the method used my Motorola, not Intel. Apple built machines that used Memory mapped I/O . The I/O array does not cut into space in the Memory area. Please see this reference: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/res/ioSummary-c.htmlAnd where does it state that this is a Motorola method that Intel does not use ? ? You need to start qualifying your broad over-generalisations hers... That's what causes more confusion than anything... PS. Noone mentioned Apple...who cares how they choose to do it.Quote from: patio on December 13, 2010, 05:55:54 PM And where does it state that this is a Motorola method that Intel does not use ? ?Sperry that my first post was not edited. Until recently, Apple used Motorola chips, not Intel. Quote The 68000 had many high-end design wins early on. It became the dominant CPU for Unix based workstations including Sun workstations and Apollo/Domain workstations, found its way into heralded computers such as the Amiga, Atari ST, Apple Lisa and Macintosh, and was used in the first generation of desktop laser printers including the original Apple Inc. LaserWriter and the HP LaserJet.Intel does NOT use memory map I/O. The specific I/O instructions are for port mapped devices. Quote Port-mapped I/O uses a special class of CPU instructions specifically for performing I/O. This is generally found on Intel microprocessors, specifically the IN and OUT instructions which can read and write one to four bytes (outb, outw, outl) to an I/O device. I/O devices have a separate address space from general memory, either accomplished by an extra "I/O" pin on the CPU's physical interface, or an entire bus dedicated to I/O. Because the address space for I/O is isolated from that for main memory,The above are from the Wikipedia. Look for 'memory map I/O' Intel instruction set for the x86 CPUs. http://home.comcast.net/~fbui/intel.html Motorola Instruction set for 68000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_68000 It SEEMS that others are confused by this. I just assume everybody knew the historical use of the term. Here is one user's confusion: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3194139/x86-memory-and-i-o-map Of course, it you want to, you can build a memory map I/O thing for a PC. Most devices use port map instead of memory map. A separate array for slower devices is a feature of the Intel design. As yet, it is not not used to its full potential. BC, Please read the x86 instruction set from COVER to cover. EDIT: Microprocessors and microcomputer-based system design - Google Books Result Quote Intel microprocessors can use either standard or memory- mapped I/O while Motorola microprocessors use only memory-mapped I/OQuote from: Geek-9pm on December 13, 2010, 05:21:52 PM That may cause confusion. The term Memory mapped I/O generally refers to the method used my Motorola, not Intel. Apple built machines that used Memory mapped I/O .the IBM PC uses memory mapped IO as well. Quote The I/O array does not cut into space in the Memory area.I never said it did. In fact I'm not sure if you're talking about I/O ports, or I/O addresses, since it's rather vague. I'm not sure if it does anymore (things are probably different in protected mode and x64 Native mode ) Although it does "use" memory in Real Mode; the 384K of HMA memory above the DOS accessible 640K was addressable by even the original IBM PC; it was reserved however to perform memory mapped I/O with the various hardware devices, as well as map the various ROM codes into addressable memory space, so that they could, you know, be executed. Additionally, if what you say is true, I've witnessed magic when using the original PC [GW]BASIC[A] "POKE" instruction to write values to memory would light up pixels/characters on the display. I am curious how this mapping took place if there was no mapping. This was using POKE to poke memory addresses, not OUT to work with I/O Ports directly. Today the memory doesn't stay "used"; the device driver locks an area of memory using appropriate kernel functions and communicates with the device using that memory, and then when it's finished communicating with it it unlocks it, which means the OS is free to use it for what it pleases. Bear in mind however that almost no Device nowadays really uses I/O addresses in this manner; generally the communication is handled by DMA transfers by the chipset, which manages all the hairy stuff. In fact I/O memory mapping like this is only done if you purposely force Programmed I/O on your devices; usually it's slower but if your hardware is finicky can be more reliable then DMA bus mastering. I/O Ports are not necessarily I/O addresses, and I/O ports do not necessarily correspond directly to the electronic input into a chip or chipset. From the same wikipedia article you quoted: Quote A final reason that memory-mapped I/O is preferred in x86-based architectures is that the instructions that perform port-based I/O are limited to one or two registers: EAX, AX, and AL are the only registers that data can be moved in to or out of, and either a byte-sized immediate value in the instruction or a value in register DX determines which port is the source or destination port of the transfer[1][2]. Since any general purpose register can send or receive data to or from memory and memory-mapped I/O, memory-mapped I/O uses less instructions and can run faster than port I/O. AMD did not extend the port I/O instructions when defining the x86-64 architecture to support 64-bit ports, so 64-bit transfers cannot be performed using port I/O[3]. and Quote Memory-mapped I/O is the cause of memory barriers in older generations of computers – the 640 KiB barrier is due to the IBM PC placing the Upper Memory Area in the 640–1024 KiB range (of its 20-bit memory addressing), while the 3 GB barrier is due to similar memory-mapping in 32-bit architectures in the 3–4 GB range. If they didn't do memory mapped I/O, I'd like to know how they caused these observable barriers and how they would be preferable. thx. also: http://duartes.org/gustavo/blog/post/motherboard-chipsets-memory-map Quote Physical memory addresses are also used for communication with assorted devices on the motherboard (this communication is called memory-mapped I/O). These devices include video cards, most PCI cards (say, a scanner or SCSI card), and also the flash memory that stores the BIOS. Quote BC, Please read the x86 instruction set from cover to cover.haha, yeah, I should read it. k. Yes, read it! To clarify. Intel CPU have specific I/O constructionist write to the I/O array. There is a wire, a pin on the original 8086 CPU that indicates there is an I/O operation. In general, I/O operations in the Intel universe means any operation using the specific IN and OUT instructions. Not memory references. An engineer who built a memory map I/O for an Intel CPU may live to regret it. The dubious advantage is offset by other issues. But there has not been universal agreement on the point. But the ones who use memory-map do not wear a suit and tie. They are rebels. The rest of us are quite proper and only use the I/O map. I never used a memory map U/O in any of my designs. And I don't PEKK and POKE, I do INP and OUT, the way Intel meant it to be. Read the Intel documentation The floppy controller, the HDD controller, the system timer, the keyboard, the mouse and the printer port and both serial ports are devices that have a specific range of address in the I/O map. They are address, but the proper terminology is not to refer to them as memory. Please refer to the first reference. It is an I/O port map. There are NOT memory locations. Thane are ports. That is P O R T S - to make sure I splet it write. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input/Output_Base_Address *insert Facepalm demotivator* |

Solve : laptop doesn't see HDD when its in computer, but it does when plugged in via USB? |
Answer» hi forum, i have a toshiba portege that i have to fix for a school project. the problem is that we got 24 of these from a toyota plant and they royally screwed the hard drive. my project is to get one working so we know what to do. anyway i have tried to install win xp pro sp3 onto and the disc loads, but the computer doesn't see the hard drive when it is plugged in to its original SATA port in the computer. but when i USE a SATA to USB converter cable, it sees it, but doesn't WANT to install. i have tried formatting it over 9000 times (not literally) in a few different formats and have trying to use the "REPAIR volume" thing at the BEGINNING of the installer menu. but nothing will get the hard drive back to being able to be seem inside the computer. any suggestions? We don't normally help with homework but in this case I'll make an exception. You need to learn to capitalize the first word of a sentence and proper nouns (ie, Toyota). Other than that, you're on your own. Sorry. |

Look over these. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Connectivity-3-5-Inch-Enclosure-SD-ENC35014/dp/B003SNJ9WG Buy an external enclosure from a major vendor and likely it will WORK. If not, send it back. They have customers reviews that may be helpful. I continue to use external HDD with my laptop. Despite all the bad learning experiences. It just tales to long to backup over the network. And I don't leave the file server on 24/7 anyway.Quote from: bambibunny on December 10, 2010, 06:08:46 AM 1. the reason i have the external drive is so that we did not have to keep all the docs, pics etc on the laptops1. Solve : Which computer would be the better buy?? |

Answer» Not sure which would be the best buy, I am shopping at Best buy. There is a Gateway with an Intel Pentium, 6GB MEMORY and 1TB HD for 519, and there is a HP with an AMD Quad-core, 4GB memory andn 750 HD for 529. I built my last one myself but don't feel like risking parts not working and buying Windows 7. I primarily surf the WEB and use itunes for music and videos. Which would be my best bet? Or if someone could direct me to a better deal? (If that's allowed) ThanksPersonal OPINION - I'm not a Gateway fan and for your NEEDS the HP looks fine. You might read the attached article. Solve : PC freezes during startup? |
Answer» Hey guys, Im back again. Some of you may remember me from a few weeks ago. Now, I took my computer down to the shop where we got it (Used) from. We told him the problem and when he looked inside, he saw that 3 of our capacitors had blown. He ordered the capacitors and installed them. We had also told him that our CD burner never worked from the start, so he took a look at it and said that to FIX it, they'd have to wipe and reboot and all that business. So he did. We got it back and its been working great but I noticed in that after I turn it off and go to sleep, when I wake up and turn it on again, it'll bring me to the XP loading screen with the blue bar. However that bar never fills. It just doesn't load. It freezes. |

It is such a large company (over 200k employees nationwide) that it is a foregone CONCLUSION they monitor computer activity, which is one reason I am very careful to only do company work on the system. However, my wife had a concern...I connect through our household modem. Sometimes the wife will be using her computer wirelessly at the same time. She and I want to know if my company's MONITORING efforts are able to ascertain any detail regarding her internet usage since the information is going through the same modem. Can anyone help alleviate/confirm her fears? WOULD the company's monitoring activities detect any information from her computer, even if it is not connected to the VPN but is still using the same modem? |

Solve : Problems with new SATA HDD? |
Answer» OKAY, so here's an update. The Windows 7 disk has got passed the splash screen and it now asks what drive I want to install it on. At first all that showed up was my external HDD. Then, I loaded the "5029" file using a flash drive and chose the xp folder to install the driver. It was the closest thing to W7 I thought. It then recognized the drive as "Unallocated Space" It recognzed the 475GB free space. With that I hit Next and I got an error and the process RESTARTED. Now what? Unplug the external hard drive. Unplug all unnecessary peripherals. Just have the keyboard and mouse plugged into the computer. Remove the IDE drive from the motherboard. Just have the DVD drive and the new hard drive plugged in. Go into BIOS and load fail safe defaults. Try INSTALLING again. I think the problem is that there are no drivers for the SATA/RAID that work with W7?Quote from: EmoReaper on December 08, 2010, 07:14:59 PM I think the problem is that there are no drivers for the SATA/RAID that work with W7?Manual says ULi M1689, not ALi. That driver file didn't do anything different. I was ABLE to use another motherboard that I had to install it on that drive. Actually I think I'm gonna stick with this other motherboard too.
