No installation required.

After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

Post TWO sets of numbers. When computer idle and when you have 10 tables, or so open.ive dowloaded it and filled in the ip address and the other boxes and hit test and it keeps saying - test failed: remote server unreachableWhat exactly did you download?

Solve : HP Laptop dead!?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a HP Laptop (approx 3 years old) and it has died on me. It crashed on me LAST night and was unable to switch it on again at first but it did come on eventually after pressing the power button about 10 times and it seemed to work OK until I went to bed. However this morning when I came to switch on my laptop nothing HAPPENED. When I press the power button (either on battery or power source) all I get is the blue power light come on and then quickly go off, there is ALSO no sound coming from the laptop in the way of fans. Please help!Do you have or have access to a VOM or DVOM. (a meter used to test voltage/resistance ect.)?
If so, PLUG the AC power supply cord into the wall but leave it unplugged from your laptop. US the VOM/DVOM, (set to AC voltage) to check for voltage at the plug that is unplugged from the laptop. The meter should ~110-120 volts. If not you have a faulty cord, a faulty transformer or no current at the wall receptacle.

Solve : Compatible graphic card?

Answer»

My PC configuration --
Intel GD965RY MOTHERBOARD wi PCi E slot
4 GB DDR2 Ram
500 GB HARD Disk & GB Hard Disk
19" Viewsonic LCD Display

please tell me whether 9500GT nvidia 1 GB Graphic card suits to my configurationnVidia doesn't make graphics cards, they make graphics processors (chips).Biggest concern is if the card will fit properly in case, does your case have good airflow, and most of all important is how many watts your power supply is, since if your power supply is only 250 watts your going to cook that power supply and/or have a system that acts funky when the power supply cant keep up with the load on it.

You will most likely be upgrading your power supply to 500watts or better for that video card. Hopefully your computer takes a universal power supply and is not a name brand computer where they make their own power supplies that are not universal in mounting screw locations and dimensions. Some name brands are universal and some are not. MAYBE you will be lucky and have a universal power supply case!!!

Sometimes, such as in the case of my one HP full tower, the dimensions are similar, but the mounting screw locatons dont match up. I was able to use 1 of HP's supplied holes and then make a stencil on paper and mark for 3 other holes that I had to drill through the steel to screw the 3 other screws in and convert the case to a universal accepting power supply case vs pay HP's REPLACEMENT part mark up, and/or swap guts into a brand new universal case.Hi,
the power supply for this configuration is 450 watts (make-supercom) is it enough as i am using 500 GB & 250Gb hard disk with 1 Gb DDR2 Zotac 9500GT graphic card
Please suggest

Solve : Microphone Recording Problems?

Answer»

I don't know if this would be proper on this forum because I don't know if it's a problem with my microphone or with Windows or the sound card or something else, but here goes. On my old computer under the same set up my studio microphone worked fine but now on this computer under Windows 7 it does not. When noise suppression is turned off, my microphone only sends input to the left channel but when noise suppression is on it sends to both left and right channels. I have the microphone hooked up to a whatever the plug is called on studio mics to RCA converter and then to a miniKaosPad and then a line in cable ultimately running to the sound card if that helps at all. I'm wondering though if there's some tweak in Windows 7 I can modify to fix this because noise suppression is cool and all for getting rid of the static from my miniKP but it muffles my voice noticeably and when I sing, notes I hold for longer than a couple of seconds are also suppressed by noise suppression. I have audio software to do noise REDUCTION and remove the static manually so I don't really need the automatic noise suppression to begin with. When I only plug the microphone partially into the converter this problem is alleviated but this seems like I'm only putting a band aid on a major wound to fix it.

I just tried PLUGGING the line in cable into the line in port on my sound card just to see if it was the microphone input being the problem but the line in does the same thing.Noise suppression is for speech.
We need some more details about the sound card and motherboard you use. Most PC sound systems do not have stereo input for a microphone. Only the line input is stereo.

They look the same, but only one is stereo.

BTW: how do I reduce the display size of the IMAGE?Not sure what the motherboard or sound card is or else I would of provided the info in the original post. All the methods I tried to find out the motherboard and sound card revealed no results unfortunately and they didn't tell me what they were in the computer specs when I BOUGHT it and there was no DOCUMENTATION provided. This is another reason I prefer building my computers but someone bought me this one before I had time to think about it. Luckily they decided to go crazy with the system specs even though they know nothing about them! I don't know what else to do to find out what sound card and motherboard I have aside from actually opening up the computer and taking it apart but I don't think I'm allowed to do that yet. I'm thinking maybe the stuff was damaged when I had that power surge that killed my previous computer but don't have the means to test out that theory right now.

Solve : HP Printer works but won't scan?

Answer»

HP Desktop F2210 All-in-one; Dell laptop Inspiron 1150; Windows XP. PRINTS fine but won't scan.

When I try to open HP Solution Center. just for an INSTANT I see the box open, then it disappears and another box says "No HP Device found. HP Solution Center will close now."

Printer power is on, USB cable attached; it does print.

Any suggestions? Thanks. DixieflashWallMart lists this as a super cheap printer. So you would not want to spend a lot of time and MONEY trying to FIX it.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Deskjet-F2210-Printer-Scanner-and-Copier-All-in-One/10710284
We assume you XP version up to date and you did the right drivers.
Did yo do something recently that would have changed the setup?

I also have had trouble with my HP all-in-one, but not the same model. I had to re install the software. Then it wired again. But not likely it was the same problem. But that takes less time and effort than digging into all the stuff on the HP support site.
http://welcome.hp.comYep, it's Walmart cheap, but I own some WM stock, plus the thing has always worked fine enough for my needs.
The old saying, "If you can't tell the difference why pay the difference" is my creedo.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and now it works. Go figger.

Appreciate your help. Cheers, DixieflashHmm. Maybe HP printers are snow being made by FORD.Im thinking of using the xerox phaser. But not really sure if this works fine for XP.

Solve : Ventrillo?

Answer»

Hi,
I recently installed a new video card a Geforce GT430 and since then i have had problems with my sound. There is a slight popping/ crackling when i play video which becomes worse when i play video in full screen. I can LIVE with that though the thing that is really bad is Ventrillo. Everything is garbled and kind of repeats. I'd really like to get ventrillo working, I can live with the other audio issues.
What i've tried: I noticed that the soundcard has it's own sound drivers so I tried removing the video cards drivers, the didn't help, but I don't know if I went about removing them the correct way, I reinstall the video driver. I tried updating the Audigy driver and that actually made everything worse, so I rolled back the audio driver. I tried playing around with the setting in Ventrillo and that didn't help at all. I'm not sure what to do next.

Video Card: Geforce nividia GT 430 (made by Galaxy)
Sound card: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
OS: Windows XPInstall latest nVidia driver dated 4/18/2011
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-270.61-whql-driver.html

If your video card has HDMI, that also contains audio, you may have to setup the digital audio through the nVidia Control Panel. This will launch the Windows Audio & you will see settings for both Creative & nVidia. Make sure default device is Creative. If I remember correctly, nVidia changed the default to the nVidia HDMI. I have the same nVidia Geforce GT430 (made by EVGA).OK, i installed the driver linked above but i can't find on the nividia control pannel an option to control audio. It has:

3d settings
- Adjust image settings with preview
- Manage 3d settings
- Set PhysX configuration
Display
-run Display optimization wizard
- Adjust desktop color settings
- Adjust SIZE and position
- Rotate display
- Run multiple display wizard
- Set up multiple displays
Video
- Adjust video color settings
- Adjust video image settings

I'm I doing something wrong? Looking in the wrong place?Your card must not have HDMI.Any other suggestions? I would start by trying different codecs in Vent. You can do this by clicking on the Test with button in the Setup screen accessible from the main menu. Try a few different ones and click test and say something, your play back will tell you what it sounds like. A second POSSIBILITY is that the Line option in Vent is also set correctly. Depending on your COMPUTER you can plug your mic into different jacks. Make sure you have the best one selected (e.g Jack or Dock etc).

Also try the Vent forums or go to your favorite games forums, usually there are a lot of pp who can help you there too.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 23, 2011, 04:46:10 PM

Your card must not have HDMI.

It does have HDMI. Link.I removed and re-downloaded the latest drivers fro both my video card and sound card and it works now. thanks for the advice and help. you can lock this thread.

Does anyone think that I would have a problem if I upgraded an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ CPU to an AMD Athlon X2 6400+ without changing the heat sink and fan? (The 4200+ is running with STOCK cooler).

Thanks in advance.first of all would your motherboard support the new cpu?? are the voltages of the old and new cpu the same? when you buy a cpu, most of the cpu's that you buy already come with a fan... to be on the safe side i would REPLACE that cpu with the fan that comes for that type It's an ebay job so it doesn't come with the fan and heat sink. I could buy one with a heat sink but I'm trying to be cheap about this.

As for support see for yourself: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/list.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=M2N4-sli&p=1To ANSWER my own question, no. The old processor is a 65 Watt the replacement 125 Watts... And I hear AMD don't give much head room with their coolers.Quote from: Accessless on May 25, 2011, 04:01:56 AM

To answer my own question, no. The old processor is a 65 Watt the replacement 125 Watts... And I hear AMD don't give much head room with their coolers.

Stock coolers are never very good. Good enough to get the job done to a point. You may be correct there Quaxo in regards to AMD...but in my EXPERIENCE since Quad cores were rolled out i have had zero issues with the iNtel stock coolers...
Built quite a few of them and only 1 had slightly out of range temps...turns out it was indeed a faulty factory unit that was below RPM rates specified.

Solve : old floppy drive yo new mb?

Answer»

hello, i have a 34 pin floppy drive and i'd like to use it on my new motherboard. do i find a ribbon for 34pin to the 40 pin motherboard. i hate to just toss it. Given that your chosen route (CABLE/adapter) is going to entail a probable purchase why not spend the money that gives you more ongoing flexibility. The AMOUNT of money spent will not be that different if you purchase an external USB floppy drive instead. You will be advancing with technology instead of regressing. truenorth As i explained to you in Chat you need a proper floppy drive cable...and it needs to be CONNECTED to the floppy controller slot on the MBoard...I doubt there are Floppy to IDE adapters, mostly because they would be of limited utility, and would require at least as many solid-state COMPONENTS as a standard USB Floppy drive, making their sale relatively moot.

I've yet to encounter a machine that doesn't have, at the very least, a floppy drive connector on the motherboard. A few "legacy free" machines and some miniature case machines notwithstanding.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 26, 2011, 09:55:22 AM

Both my present Shuttle and the previous one have no floppy header on the motherboard, but they are SFF (Small Form Factor) machines

To address the OP's problem, you may still be able to pick up LS-120 drives on Ebay or elswhere. These connect to an IDE cable and can read floppies.

I am finding that none of the latest motherboards have the FDD connector/controller. Some don't even have the IDE connector/controller. Seems to be the case with branded machines, too.Quote from: Computer_Commando on January 26, 2011, 10:52:01 AM

Solve : HP A335W will not turn on?

Answer»

I think my motherboard has gone out. The green light by the power supply lights but as soon as I press the power button it goes out. I can unplug a 4 WIRE connector (2 yellow and 2 black wires) from the motherboard and the power supply light will stay LIT when I press the power button, but the computer does not come on. As soon as I plug the 4 wire connector back in it makes a small popping SOUND (like a short) and the power supply light goes out.Sounds like a short circuit on either the PSU or motherboard. You can try using a different power supply (although a little risky if your motherboard is shorting them out). Or ask a LOCAL PC repair shop to TEST your power supply.

Solve : Improving CPU speed?

Answer»

Hey all, I have a quick question about CPU speeds.

I've read a bit about overclocking, but i'm hesitant to do that because i'm using an All-In-One PC, so I imagine the overheating problem will be similar, if not worse, to a laptop. I have a game i'd really like to improve the quality of when running on my PC. The system requirements for this game suggest it needs a 2.6ghz processor, whereas mine is 1.5 (It's an AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual Core Processor 3250e). The game runs without a problem, it's just incredibly (for want of a better word) bitty and the frame rate seems really poor.

I've taken pretty MUCH every step I could think of, altering the visuals to favour performance over looks etc, but it's still a very fidgety game play situation. If I was to look at upgrading to a better processor, how easy would that be for an All-In-One PC?

I'm using a HP Pavilion MS215uk model, with Windows 7 and a 64bit OS. Is there anything I can do without upgrading the hardware? If not, how would I go about upgrading the hardware itself? Thanks very much.Quote from: Gliff on May 25, 2011, 11:39:58 AM

Yes, most all in one machines have terrible cooling solutions normally. I would strongly recommend against doing any OC at all.

Most all in one pc's are fairly limited in the upgrades that can be done because like a laptop the hardware is usually pretty specific.

I would recommend using a different machine for the really high end games. I don't know what your budget is to WORK with, or what other expectations you may have for a new system. If this is EVEN a possibility then you can post a bit more information for us.I was afraid that it might be pretty difficult, but it's not the end of the world. At the moment i'm a bit financially out of it in terms of being able to buy a higher spec computer, but that's ok too. I do have a side question though, in my RAM info, it says I have 2gb available, but that only 1.75gb is useable?

In addition to that, when I check msinfo32 via the 'Run' service, it says I only have 709mb available physical memory ... is there anyway of boosting these to their maximum?

EDIT: I've just researched some of this so, ACTUALLY, just looks like a case of reducing background programmes is needed. And actually, just to ask, what would be the most affordable way of buying some high end spec gadgets? It'd be cool to have a laptop or PC on which I can play better quality video games. Would it even be possible to buy a base unit and attach it to my all-in-one and use the all-in-one as a monitor?Windows 7 deals with memory allocation far differently than previous versions of Windows. There is also the probability that your all in one unit uses some of the RAM for video use. You can check what is running on the computer in the way of software that has been installed and may be running in the background using the Task Manager, and change the way the software starts using Quick Start Up. This can let you designate which software will start when you start up your computer.

Hi.
I am having a problem with a p.c, when I boot it up I get 1 long and 2 short ram bleeps, the monitor doesn’t come on and I get message no video signal.
This will happen 4/5 times and then it will boot normally.

Have TRIED removing the two ram sticks and running on one then the other still the same.
Have tried resetting the bios to default and restored the o/s to factory settings

Packard BELL Intel core2 duo
Win X.P sp2
Nvidia geforce 7300 se

Any ideas?

Thanks.Go to the website of your mobo manufacturer and CHECK the bios beep codes.Hi
The code comes back as DMA initialisation failure.

Anyone care to explain, or give me some idea of a fix.

Hardware. Motherboard or expansion cards. Power off completely (disconnect AC) and check all expansion cards are properly seated, especially the display card. If that doesn't fix it, if it has onboard video try using that instead with the display card removed. Try removing other cards e.g. network, sound, etc to see if the problem goes away. In the BIOS setup, disable all shadowing of expansion adapter ROMS. if none of these get you anywhere, and you have reviewed the information here...

In fact, it looks like you've broken the things that hooks onto (not sure what to call those).YEAH, sorry, that's what i was saying earlier.. Is this computer done for now?

I can try pin it back down.. somehow. I still have the parts that snapped off that HELD it down, maybe a bit of superglue?

Also, the 2 other cards I have I don't use. Could I just get rid of them and eveything will be fine again in hope that they are the parts that are causing the problem? not sure if it shows in the picture but an AV card is plugged into the motherboard with this 4 pinned wire... quite tightly, should I just pull it out??
Clutching at straws hereIf you take it to a shop, they might be able to fix it. I have had a good look at it all now and theres nothing else missing/loose/rattling around apart from the hoops that hold the sink down.
Is that an essential peice of hardware or might be be able to just get rid of it.
Same with my modem card, AV component card.. Could I just get rid of them and only have my gfx card?

As for taking it to a shop for repairs I'm wondering what kind of prices I might be looking at, since I don't know much about the insides of my computer I could easily get ripped off.. scammed

Also taking into consideration my computer specsQuote from: Ted2 on January 26, 2011, 12:45:53 PM

As for taking it to a shop for repairs ...
That heatsink must be locked down so the chip doesn't overheat.
You can ditch the modem card if you no longer use dialup.
Don't know what the AV component card is. Can't see it.
You computer is probably 2003-4, not worth paying a shop to repair.
You could buy a new Pentium 4 motherboard for about $50US & reuse almost everything else except AGP graphics card.IT WORKS!!!!!!
I don't know why it works but it does!

All I need now is to secure that heatsink down... You don't think I could get away with just leaving it as it is in the picture even if I only use the computer for no longer than 2-3 hours at a time?

I know it's not something a technition would ever tell you to do, so maybe I wont get a reply on how to get this done?. but would a small smudge of glue not work or ruin the mobo?
I'll need to find something to replace the two hoops you can see missing and stick something else to the board to replace them too.
Well if anyones intrested in what I COME up with I'll post a pic of it hopefully working and not just a pic of a big ball of flames

There where 2 monitors connected; one 1024x768 and a 1280x1024

Surprisingly: The webradio open in one of the firefox tabs carried on, like nothing happend while running the benchmark

So is this a good or bad result?
And what tweaks can i apply for more performance?

Solve : Bios error.. PLS.. Help!!!?

Answer»

When i press delete key while booting, i GO to the bios screen... the PROBLEM is when i go to the computer health section of the bios, the temperature of my processor shows -128degree Celsius / -178 degree Fahrenheit.... it suppose to be not negative..it must be 30 to 50 degree Celsius...
how can i fix this problem? pls help

Motherboard: ECS
Model: socket 775 945GCT-M2 /1333 V1.0A
The Intel CPU has a built-in heat sensor. Additionally, a motherboard may have other sensors to indicate temperature in other areas.
Now I am not sure of this, I think the abnormally negative reading happens with the senor is DISCONNECTED. But it is hard to understand how that could happen. The sensor is on-chip, not on the motherboard.

But if the BIOS is bad, you would think the system would not work. Time to do some research. See you later.try to reset your bios.
hope this would help.. A documented bug. First time I heard of it but I don't know everything. It is, indeed, a BIOS issue.
ECS has other motherboards in the series with this same problem. Your mobo is ECS 945GCT-M2 /1333 V1.0A
Here is a page that offers a list of fixs for this know issue.
I can not see if it covers yours. Check the number again
http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/os_win7_vendor_ecs_type_bios_25.html
There is some talk about a human error in firmware design of temperature sensor algorithmic using 16 bit math. But you don't want to hear that kind of stuff, you just want to fix it. -Right?
EDIT: Do not down load the patches unless you trust that site. The PATCH is available elsewhere. You could use another software to check your temps. within windows by downloading and installing it to cross-reference the readings. Use SIW or CPUID HWMonitor.

I think when I started all this it was disabled, but since setting everything to defaults, it is now enabled.

Wants to be disabled. Also, is this just a RUN of the mill wireless adapter (plugs into a PCI slot) or a Mini PCI expansion card provided by the motherboard manufacturer? [I think they're called mini PCI slots, I could be mistaken]P.31

Inserting card could turn this off, removing card could turn it BACK on. It's the only thing that could stop the OS from booting. It's trying to boot from a network that's not there.I have replaced it with a USB connected wireless adapter. I did this after trying to remove the old card. The ability to boot from the network is disabled and stays that way whether the card is in or out. What happens if you unplug your hard & disc drives with the wireless adapter pulled out? Does the SYSTEM stop after completing the POST or do you receive the no boot device error?

I'm not to sure what this would mean at the moment but it might give us some leads to work with.I have set the hard DISK as the first boot device and then under the hard disk boot options, set the add in cards as then boot device. As a result I got the no boot disk error. Quote from: Blue Baron on January 24, 2011, 11:31:36 AM

Not sure what this means at all...It was an attempt to see if somehow the computer had made the card a boot device.OK, the problem has been solved. I don't really understand what it was, but it seems that there was a conflict with SATA controllers, maybe because of the Promise RAID PCI card I have in there does not get along with the one that came on the mother board. In any case I went into the SATA settings and changed them from "All Enabled" to just SATA 0 enabled. The system sees my RAID as a SCSI drive even though it is SATA, but that left only the C drive as and SATA drive. I presume that by enabling only the SATA 0 controller, I was setting The C drive as the only SATA drive. What that all had to do with the wireless PCI card, I have no Idea. Thank you to all of you who tried to HELP me. I certainly learned a lot more about the BIOS than I did before.Quote from: Blue Baron on January 24, 2011, 10:24:17 PM

1. This is the 1st time you even mentioned that.
2. BIOS sees any type of add-in controller card as SCSI, even if SCSI, IDE, SATA, etc.Yeah, that would have been helpful to know but then no one actually asked for his computer specs. Now that you know about the RAID PCI card, can you tell me what caused the problem with the wireless card?

I should also point out I play WoW and would like to have a card that can support WoW. Does not need to to be max settings, as I would be happy to play raids on medium settings.

My computer is a E-Machine T1352G-03W specs:

CPU : AMD Athlon™ II X2 Dual-Core Processor 260u
(1.8GHz | 2MB Total Cache)
Operating System : Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Chipset : NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150 SE Chipset
Memory : 4096MB DDR3 Dual-Channel Memory
Used Slots: 2 × 2048MB, | 2 Slots (Available)
4 DDR3 Slots (Total) - Expandable to 8GB
Hard Drive4 : 640GB 7200rpm SATA

Here is a link to my computer if more info if needed:
http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=ET1352G-03w

If you need to know any more info just ask. Here is a very good video card for the price:
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6798384&CatId=3585

Better video cards need more power, here is a good one:
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4362114&CatId=1483

Or for a cheaper PSU:
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3255393&CatId=1483

Good Luck.Thank you. My main concern is making sure I have the right parts that can fit my computer. Nothing worse than having ordered something online get it 3-7 days later only to ship it back and wait again. I just want to make sure I have the right sized PS that will fit my tower. Also have you ordered anything from compUSA.com?Yes, but I typically go to the store when they have what I need there. I checked your pc hardware details and the parts I linked to are compatable. PSU's are pretty much STANDARD size for any tower, with a few exceptions (yours isn't one). And PCIE is the connection for your gaphics card. Thank you very much. I will give you a UPDATE when I have installed psu and vid card. Hopefully will have no problems.

hey im buying a new laptop but i know nothing about computers, i have my heart set on a sony viao (see i don't even know if i spelt that correctly), does any one know if they are worth the money and how much i should expect to pay for one

May I suggest you consider a Toshiba as an alternative?

My daughter has a Toshiba Sattelite Pro. It lastest 8 months before hardware failure.

Thats my personal experience.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDX.

It's lasted 16 years so far without hardware failure. Although I have lost a few screws. And my newer Satellite L300 (although it's not a "pro", and really I'd like to know what makes one computer "pro" and another not...) has lasted almost 3 years.

That's my personal experience.

Truthfully, I don't think it makes a *censored* bit of difference which brand you go with; you're not choosing any particular TYPE of hardware, you're just choosing a logo that will be on the machine and a support company. The manufacturers are totally different, and sometimes different Toshiba models, or Acer models, or what have you could have been manufacturered by the different companies. In the same vein, a certain model of Toshiba laptop could be the exact same thing as a Acer or Sony laptop, with a different case and of course different logo and BIOS boot image.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 10, 2010, 12:50:58 AM

Reminds of the one time I had enough cash to buy band new car. Several years ago. Went to my local Dodge dealer and found a sharp little Dodge van and took it home. Some proud of myself to not have another clunker German car. Open the hood and find it was made in Japan! I have a Sony VAIO desktop (i know it is not a laptop) and some of the issues may be the same. generally speaking they tend to be more expensive than others of BASICALLY the same performance standards. So cost wise you can probably do better. Also with the desktop there have been some software compatibility issues (ACKNOWLEDGED by the software manufacturer) unique to the Vaio. Also the Vaio (may be similar with all Sony computer products) tend to be restrictive to certain hardware installations from the size or placement limitations.Somewhat as i have found on HP computers as well. If you are prepared to spend that amount of money on a laptop before you make your decision have a look at the new Apple laptops. I think as well as your "brand" concerns i think you will be best served by defining your known and anticipated needs for the laptop and emphasize your choice from that criteria. truenorth

Solve : Crackling noise from video card after poweroff?

Answer»

I recently GOT 3 new nvidia geforce gt 240 graphics cards. I installed each of them in a different comp. Now, aproximetly 3 minutes after I turn off each of these comps, there is a crackling noise that comes directly from the video card and LASTS for about 15 seconds. It sounds like some food frying in a pan. I am just wondering if this is common. I have not seen any issues with the cards functionality.Return the cards under Warranty...this is not normal behaviour.
Of course it could be the MBoard as well...but unlikely if you've installed them into different rigs...

PS. Let me guess...these came from eBay ? ?Quote

No. These came directly from newegg.com.

No, it's not the MOTHERBOARDS because I had the comps running for a while without the graphics cards and there was no noise.

I think I am going to wait until I see some problems because they perform very well and don't MAKE that noise when they are running. It seems unlikely that all three would be bad.

Does any one have a geforce gt 240? Have you ever heard this noise? It's about three minutes after you power off the system.

Something just occured to me. Wouldn't that be the time when the capacitors are discharging? Do caps ever make noise when they discharge?Quote from: Linux711 on December 14, 2010, 08:49:17 AM

1. GeForce 240 is the graphics processor, not the maker of the card.
2. I suppose it's possible.
3. Only if they are high voltage or high capacity, which don't exist on a graphics card. PSU maybe?

Solve : Printer Issues - label printer and inkjet?

Answer»

I have a zebra 450 label printer and an hp inkjet printer both installed on the same computer. When I use one and then switch to the other it carries over the format from the other. So if I print labels and then go to use my inkjet it only prints a 6x4 rectangle on the full sheet, but the second time I use it it's fine. It also does this when I use the inkjet and switch to the labels. It stretches it over several. Is there a workaround for this? I hate all the waste.Re-boot after switching printers...I have, but the problem is reoccurring. It's only an issue for the first copy once I switch, but I don't want to have to waste paper and ink. I have to alternate between the two often, so rebooting constantly isn't really feasible.Have you tried manually setting the paper size before you print to a particular printer? It only lets me reset it for the zebra label printer, but I have to do it every single time I switch back to it, and it won't let me do it for the inkjet. I have to print a page on it to clear the formatting carried over from the zebra. Is the HP inkjet the default printer, and have you set the paper size in its properties?

Yes, the hp is the default, and it's set to letter. From a quick Google which showed me similar questions to yours, I GET the impression that this may be an issue specifically affecting HP printers, or rather their drivers. I suggest you try asking in an HP printer forum.

I don't understand what you mean by "it won't let you" change the paper size for your HP. You haven't said what operating SYSTEM you are using, but I'll assume it's some kind of Windows - you go into Printers and Faxes and double click on the icon for the HP and choose "Properties" from the "File" menu, and what, the paper size is grayed out?

I had it working fine before. It became an issue when I had to reinstall the drivers for the zebra. I downloaded them from the site and they installed fine, but it seems to be an updated version, because the layout in the properties menu is different from what I remember; However, I can't find any OLDER versions of it. I'm at a loss.Encore une fois...

I'm running VISTA. It doesn't let me change it right after I use the zebra. When I go to change it the options are available but then when I click it a message saying something about a tray error pops up.

Solve : Zebra printer skipping labels?

Answer»

I wonder if anyone can help me???
I have a Zebra TLP 2844 label printer that keeps skipping labels. It was working FINE then started doing this out of the blue.
I have changed it for another zebra printer, changed the TLP cable, changed the power SUPPLY. and it is connected to a dlink.

I have tried putting in dump mode and out again, but it still does the same. It will print 1 label then skip 1 then print half and stop, you then need to press the button to get it going again.

Please help, I'm desperate!!!!! My goodness but that is some great looking printer. I have done some research on your behalf and i have found the following video which purports to deal with your "skipping" issue as WELL as others. I HOPE it will assist you in resolving your problem. Please come back and tell us whether it does or not. If not i have some other suggestions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD7nrSsyp7s
good luck, truenorthThanks for the video, but I have already done that.
I have even reset back to factory default and set the calibration again, but it still misbehaves!

So what are your other suggestions?Well that is too bad that video didn't do the trick. My other suggestions are those that would normally apply to "regular " printers not specifically to label printers. Often printer issues like the one you are having is most likely to be a software issue rather than a problem with the hardware. That being the case the most common way of dealing with it is to do both a "hardware uninstall" and a " software uninstal" to create the opportunity for a complete new INSTALL. Software removed via "add/remove programs" and hardware from "device manager". Then following the instructions of your user's manual to the letter. Reinstall the printer. Where are you in terms of warranty on the printer? Do you still have access to free tech support from the manufacturer?truenorthYeah I will be getting one of the printer Technicians out to advise or fix it.
Its not loaded on the system as such - its running through a dlink onto a print server - I have recreated it.
As for the software its not something that I can uninstall as its a program used off a Terminal Server.

Anyway, thanks for the help though.

Solve : Dead keyboard??

Answer»

Having to use the on-screen KEYBOARD , so I'll be brief. I've been having issues with my keyboard, so its been washed a number of times now...with water. Bad move, I know. This most recent time, i did it with isopropyl, as that seems to be the recommended manner of cleaning a keyboard. Well, now the laptop its used doesn't seem to POST properly with it plugged in, and it'll freeze at the LOADING screen. With the board not installed, the PC posts and boots fine. I'm thinking the board needs to be replaced, but worried that with those other issues, that the laptop itself was damaged;I unplugged and plugged the board while the machine was running so I could test it. Thoughts? When a keyboard is 'washed', it needs to be fully dissembled and all moisture has to be fully removed be either forced air or centrifugal force. Or even both. All residue has to be recovered. Absolutely.

But can you not in in an external keyboard to you laptop?

Just a quick question, why are you washing your keyboard so much? I rarely wash MINE, only when I have spilt something over it, and then I do use water, but sparingly, and I immediately dry everything out.

As for your dead keyboard are we talking about a high priced gaming one or just the run of the mill keyboard, if it is a cheap one I would just chuck it out and pick up a new one, all the time you will spend finding the problem and then ordering a new board, or whatever, for it, if you can even get one would outweigh the cost of running down to your local store and picking up a new one.

Without looking it is impossible to let you know what the issue it, but by the sound I would say it is a corrosion issue with one of the components.

wish you luck with it

Solve : How to connect analog TV to a VGA/DVI graphic card on PC??

Answer»

I have an analog TV with component & composite HOLES, but my graphic card only has a DVI and VGA output. I just bought this card 9400GT Geforce and it doesn't have S-Video.

From reading through the comments & researching, I see I can possibly use a component video transcoder, but I just want to make sure be before I make a purchase and if there are any other options for me. This graphic card will support component output.

I want to use either component or RCA (white, yellow, red) cables.

Here is how the back of my TV looks like.

So..what is the best and cheapest option for me? Thanks.Yes you are right you need a converter box like http://tinyurl.com/2ulqvdg. Do not buy the ones that are just cables as your Video card will be out PUTTING a compatable signal.

I used a box like the one above for my old TV and had no problems, but tried to use one for my parents and it never worked perfectly, seems to be a bit hit an miss. Not surprising though as you are trying to combine 2 different standards. But this should work. Worst case is you have to return it I guess.

Hope things work for you

Solve : HELP: Older HD TV to new graphics card?

Answer»

Tomorrow I am receiving a GeForce GT220 1 GB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 graphics card to install in my dell 4700 (XP Sp2, 1.5GBs RAM, 500GB HDD). The card has DVI, VGA, & HDMI outputs. My 1080i HD wide-screen Samsung TV has only component, s-video, and composite inputs (it's an older HD TV). I would like to use the component input, to get the best picture (HD), but can't afford to spend a lot of money. What do you suggest I use as a converter and with which connector? I've searched the internet/chat rooms, but nothing seems to match my SITUATION exactly. Thank you for your help!

How's this?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812270321&cm_re=dvi_to_rca-_-12-270-321-_-ProductHate to tell you this, but you wont be getting HD quality from composite inputs.

You can buy a VGA to composite to get the resolution.Linux711: Thank you - However, I've read conflicting reports on weather that part works or not because DVI is digital and component video is analog, and then there's hertz to deal with.
hedgehog88: That's why I said I wanted to use component video, not composite. Thanks anywayQuote from: RLM on December 08, 2010, 12:53:49 AM

1. The card has DVI, VGA, & HDMI outputs.
2. My 1080i HD wide-screen Samsung TV has only component, s-video, and composite inputs (it's an older HD TV).
3. I would like to use the component input, to get the best picture (HD)...
1. Use adapter
2. Use component video
3. Component video is also high-def-capable, which MAKES it a good ALTERNATIVE when HDMI isn't an option. This three-jack connection splits the video signal into three parts (one brightness and two color signals). This analog connection delivers an extremely accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than S-video or composite video (below).
Signal type: analog
Maximum resolution: 1080p (however, many video components will only send video up to 1080i via component video)

Need DVI to Component Adapter
DVI-I to 3 RCA Component Cable - 6ft
Thanks for your help, but I don't think this one will work either -
"THIS CABLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER'S DVI PORT TO THE COMPONENT INPUT ON YOUR HDTV unless your video card supports component out function through it's DVI port"
I'm pretty sure my graphics card doesn't have a 'component out' function - but I'll do more research.from a few quick searches, it SOUNDS like your card does support that capability.I use this guy http://tinyurl.com/2ulqvdg. Have not had a problem, going from VGA to Component. I have tried other products and this one is the only one that worked for me.

I had a video card that said it would output component and I tried the cable only adapter and it never worked for me. I did not spend time trying to figure it out and just BOUGHT this guy.

good luck

Solve : I/O Address Range - Why??

Answer»

Why do we have a range of port addresses just for one type of peripheral device? What's the point of leaving black spaces in I/O map?I was told by my teacher 8 years ago when asking a similar question at college that this is because there are plenty of port addresses to go around, more than needed to operate, so it made no sense to bind them all tightly together, but rather have them gapped instead. But this was just a verbal answer from the teacher with no physical proof to show as to why.An I/O address range "maps" device input to memory. Sort of like how in old computers you could use the built in BASIC to "poke" values directly into the Video memory; the video memory was on the video board, but it was "mapped" into addressable memory.

Memory mapped I/O (which is what the "address ranges" refer to) is a method that uses the same Address bus to handle both memory and I/O devices.

With modern versions of windows, the DRIVER for a device has to interact with it's device (obviously) so it has to get the data it wants to send to the device to that device; generally this is done via mapped I.O; whereby both the device and the driver "agree" on an area of memory where they will communicate. The driver itself get's the appropriate address range from the OS, and the OS makes sure multiple devices aren't configured to use the same range. It won't necessarily cause problems if they do; only if you use the two devices simultaneously.

So why is it a range? Well if it wasn't, the driver could only send a single byte of information to the device at once! the answer given by your teacher was a very general answer.

The answer given by your teacher was satisfactory for a quick verbal answer. Years ago hardware engineers like to use the least number of of chips required for a certain task. Sometime ago Intel has established the idea of input and output portsbeing separate from the memory array. On the IBM PC a hardware can have over 65,000 I/O ports. The coating all addresses would requirethe chip that accepts 16 lines. Other little bit could be saved by using an design that has much less than the total 65,000. Quite often input-output chips require four ports. It depends on what kind of device you have. Work SAMPLE one port could be the data port another port could be the status port and yet another port could be a command for and yet another port could be used to set a timer. So there you would have four ports. And by the way, from the standpoint of the hardware it's really a ports, not for ports. Both the input section in the output section are really separate parts of the device, although they share the same address.
by assigning BLOCKS of at least four address to a device it also allows for in the future the revision or new version of the chip that would require all for work addresses.
On modern motherboards there are large scale integrated circuits to take care of all the addressing and could handle any sort of addressing scheme you could wish for. What years ago hardware engineers were concerned about using regular logic chips to the code I'll address. He could make a difference if they had used to treat or four chips do the job.
This is a quick answer and I have not edited all the content. If you get the gist of what I'm talking about. Acyclic which her teacher said was essentially true. You might also tell him that I said many current I/O chips actually require four ports.I like BC's reply better...Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 13, 2010, 04:08:13 AM

Port-mapped I/O uses a special class of CPU instructions specifically for performing I/O. This is generally found on Intel microprocessors, specifically the IN and OUT instructions which can read and write one to four bytes (outb, outw, outl) to an I/O device. I/O devices have a separate address space from general memory, either accomplished by an extra "I/O" pin on the CPU's physical interface, or an entire bus dedicated to I/O. Because the address space for I/O is isolated from that for main memory,

The I/O array does not cut into space in the Memory area.
I never said it did. In fact I'm not sure if you're talking about I/O ports, or I/O addresses, since it's rather vague. I'm not sure if it does anymore (things are probably different in protected mode and x64 Native mode ) Although it does "use" memory in Real Mode; the 384K of HMA memory above the DOS accessible 640K was addressable by even the original IBM PC; it was reserved however to perform memory mapped I/O with the various hardware devices, as well as map the various ROM codes into addressable memory space, so that they could, you know, be executed. Additionally, if what you say is true, I've witnessed magic when using the original PC [GW]BASIC[A] "POKE" instruction to write values to memory would light up pixels/characters on the display. I am curious how this mapping took place if there was no mapping. This was using POKE to poke memory addresses, not OUT to work with I/O Ports directly.

Today the memory doesn't stay "used"; the device driver locks an area of memory using appropriate kernel functions and communicates with the device using that memory, and then when it's finished communicating with it it unlocks it, which means the OS is free to use it for what it pleases. Bear in mind however that almost no Device nowadays really uses I/O addresses in this manner; generally the communication is handled by DMA transfers by the chipset, which manages all the hairy stuff. In fact I/O memory mapping like this is only done if you purposely force Programmed I/O on your devices; usually it's slower but if your hardware is finicky can be more reliable then DMA bus mastering.

I/O Ports are not necessarily I/O addresses, and I/O ports do not necessarily correspond directly to the electronic input into a chip or chipset.

From the same wikipedia article you quoted:

Quote
A final reason that memory-mapped I/O is preferred in x86-based architectures is that the instructions that perform port-based I/O are limited to one or two registers: EAX, AX, and AL are the only registers that data can be moved in to or out of, and either a byte-sized immediate value in the instruction or a value in register DX determines which port is the source or destination port of the transfer[1][2]. Since any general purpose register can send or receive data to or from memory and memory-mapped I/O, memory-mapped I/O uses less instructions and can run faster than port I/O. AMD did not extend the port I/O instructions when defining the x86-64 architecture to support 64-bit ports, so 64-bit transfers cannot be performed using port I/O[3].

and
Quote
Memory-mapped I/O is the cause of memory barriers in older generations of computers – the 640 KiB barrier is due to the IBM PC placing the Upper Memory Area in the 640–1024 KiB range (of its 20-bit memory addressing), while the 3 GB barrier is due to similar memory-mapping in 32-bit architectures in the 3–4 GB range.

If they didn't do memory mapped I/O, I'd like to know how they caused these observable barriers and how they would be preferable. thx.

To clarify.
Intel CPU have specific I/O constructionist write to the I/O array.

There is a wire, a pin on the original 8086 CPU that indicates there is an I/O operation. In general, I/O operations in the Intel universe means any operation using the specific IN and OUT instructions. Not memory references.

An engineer who built a memory map I/O for an Intel CPU may live to regret it. The dubious advantage is offset by other issues. But there has not been universal agreement on the point. But the ones who use memory-map do not wear a suit and tie. They are rebels. The rest of us are quite proper and only use the I/O map. I never used a memory map U/O in any of my designs. And I don't PEKK and POKE, I do INP and OUT, the way Intel meant it to be.

Read the Intel documentation

The floppy controller, the HDD controller, the system timer, the keyboard, the mouse and the printer port and both serial ports are devices that have a specific range of address in the I/O map. They are address, but the proper terminology is not to refer to them as memory.
Please refer to the first reference. It is an I/O port map.

There are NOT memory locations.
Thane are ports. That is P O R T S - to make sure I splet it write.

Solve : laptop doesn't see HDD when its in computer, but it does when plugged in via USB?

Answer»

hi forum, i have a toshiba portege that i have to fix for a school project. the problem is that we got 24 of these from a toyota plant and they royally screwed the hard drive. my project is to get one working so we know what to do. anyway i have tried to install win xp pro sp3 onto and the disc loads, but the computer doesn't see the hard drive when it is plugged in to its original SATA port in the computer. but when i USE a SATA to USB converter cable, it sees it, but doesn't WANT to install. i have tried formatting it over 9000 times (not literally) in a few different formats and have trying to use the "REPAIR volume" thing at the BEGINNING of the installer menu. but nothing will get the hard drive back to being able to be seem inside the computer. any suggestions? We don't normally help with homework but in this case I'll make an exception. You need to learn to capitalize the first word of a sentence and proper nouns (ie, Toyota). Other than that, you're on your own. Sorry.

Solve : Lost External Hard Drive?

This is why i never trust a USB connection for data retrieval...
If it can easily be removed from the enclosure hook up the drive as an internal slave drive...and how i do that?

Here is what you CAN do now. Look over these.

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Connectivity-3-5-Inch-Enclosure-SD-ENC35014/dp/B003SNJ9WG

Buy an external enclosure from a major vendor and likely it will WORK. If not, send it back. They have customers reviews that may be helpful.

I continue to use external HDD with my laptop. Despite all the bad learning experiences. It just tales to long to backup over the network.
And I don't leave the file server on 24/7 anyway.Quote from: bambibunny on December 10, 2010, 06:08:46 AM
1. the reason i have the external drive is so that we did not have to keep all the docs, pics etc on the laptops
2. as it made them REALLY sluggish, i didn't but it so it could sit there and look pretty...
1. Then you run the risk of LOSING everything. It's your computer, do what you want.
2. The laptop hard drive should be much faster than the USB hard drive. Something else is wrong.

Solve : onboard video and video card problems?

Answer»

My computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RS320
I have 1.5g of memory
Running Windows 7 32bit
and the computers motherboard comes with an Intel 865G Intergrated Graphics 64MB Max DYNAMICALLY shared Graphics Memory Onboard.

My problem is that i have 2 video cards that I have tried, one is an HIS Radeon 9250 (AGP)128mb, and one is a Geforce 6200 AGP 512mb. I am not a good story teller so pls stay with me here...
I play World of warcraft, just as reference I get 10-30 fps with the Radeon 9250 in game. I have ALSO taken the 9250 out and used the onboard 64mb video and it runs exactly the same fps and performance as it does with the card in. i thought it should be an improvement with any video card installed! as a fluke the game let me load it without a video card installed. normally it doesnt, instead an error ( i think i left the ATI drivers installed but just took the Radeon card out and it worked with my onboard for some reason).

I couldnt FIGURE it out so i just assumed that the Radeon was out dated and decided to buy a newer and better card. So i bought a Geforce 6200 AGP 512, and sure as heck i get the same performance with it installed!!

My bios does not have a power user setting to speak of, and I cant set it to use AGP as the primary video. or i think that would completely fix it.

The only difference i am getting with the two cards installed is that with the Geforce installed I dont have a dual monitor option in the display settings( monitors with 1 and 2 on them), where i did with the Radeon. And the Geforce is also not showing up as duplicated in the device MANAGER under display adapters. where the Radeon did. not sure if that makes any difference. At boot up the Nvidia card shows the first boot screen as 512 GEforce etc. does that mean my computer is auto switching its graphics to aGP?

My computer is detecting the cards and they come up with a (!) in the device manager when the hardward is installed but waiting for drivers.

I went to the help page and also my manual for this computer but I am running windows 7 32bit and the fix on the help page was only for up to WinXP.

I dont see any jumpers on the computers motherboard or i would mess with thoes too.

There is something with this factory computer, its made to be user friendly and the bios is not for any advanced user. its like it was not meant to be upgraded, any other computer besides a Sony Vaio would be no problem im sure.

I dont want to take it in and pay 100 bux to get it working at a shop, I gotta do it myself!

Can anyone figure it out? I searched and posted for a solution with the Radeon 9250 when it wasnt giving me performance, but now im fed up!! 2 cards giving me no performance changes, gotta try posting again.

THanks for reading, email, PM, any answers are much appreciated!Onboard video is AGP, so AGP card won't offer performance gain.

Solve : Which computer would be the better buy??

Answer»

Not sure which would be the best buy, I am shopping at Best buy. There is a Gateway with an Intel Pentium, 6GB MEMORY and 1TB HD for 519, and there is a HP with an AMD Quad-core, 4GB memory andn 750 HD for 529. I built my last one myself but don't feel like risking parts not working and buying Windows 7. I primarily surf the WEB and use itunes for music and videos. Which would be my best bet? Or if someone could direct me to a better deal? (If that's allowed) ThanksPersonal OPINION - I'm not a Gateway fan and for your NEEDS the HP looks fine. You might read the attached article. Gateway has a rocky history. It's new ownership MAY solve some of it's past problems.

Solve : PC freezes during startup?

Answer»

Hey guys, Im back again. Some of you may remember me from a few weeks ago. Now, I took my computer down to the shop where we got it (Used) from. We told him the problem and when he looked inside, he saw that 3 of our capacitors had blown. He ordered the capacitors and installed them. We had also told him that our CD burner never worked from the start, so he took a look at it and said that to FIX it, they'd have to wipe and reboot and all that business. So he did. We got it back and its been working great but I noticed in that after I turn it off and go to sleep, when I wake up and turn it on again, it'll bring me to the XP loading screen with the blue bar. However that bar never fills. It just doesn't load. It freezes.

Now, when I turn off my xbox, it slowly turns off, shutting everything down. But when it freezes, I press the button and like instant its already off. Well, when I press the button on my computer, I dont even have to hold it, I press once and it shuts off just like my FROZEN xbox does. (I only use the button in this situation, other times I go to start > turn off etc etc.). After that, Ill restart and it'll bring me to the page where it says WINDOWS did not start properly and tells me to highlight and in 20 seconds it'll start.

I cant move to highlight ANYTHING, it just sits there on "Start windows normally" or whatever it defaults and in 20 seconds, it reboots and I can use it.

Its really a hassle but more so Im just worried. Should I be? What do you guys think is the problem? Do you think its an urgent fix? Do you guys have any info to help?I don't know what your relationship or warranty conditions are with your vendor however it must be becoming apparent to you that you were sold a dud.If you can return it and no more attempts at fixing it. Get them to provide you with a comparable alternative. Have them demonstrate it running with all it's functions before you leave the store. truenorthAt this point and all things considered i'd have to say truenorth has given you excellent advice...I agree. My patience with this company is being drained out.

We dont have any type of warranty and they wont fix it for free, so I guess Ill just have to deal with it. I mean the computer works fine except for that startup. We'll probably just keep it and deal with it until we can manage to save up some more money, in which my brother in law is going to help me find a better one.

Much APPRECIATION for the input though.

Solve : Laptop Battery?

Best place to buy a new laptop battery for a HP Pavillion dv6 PN484170-001

Thanks in advance,
MP.You will GET answers, but they may not be the best for you.
What is 'best' from your standpoint?

Price.
Compatibility.
Quality.
Delivery.
Support.

Price alone is not a good choice. IMHO.
Just ONE of many, many out there.

Price then quality to be honest. Why not just buy a battery from HP?Google laptop battery, and you will get a thousand choices. If you have a local Batteries Plus that's a good source but they don't sell on line.HP COMPARED to internet stores are a bit pricey.

Not knowing squat about batteries can I assume correctly that if the specs are IDENTICAL the batteries are of equal quality ?

HP Wanted like 99 bucks and I found a place for 49 and the specs are the same.Quote from: MP1975 on January 28, 2011, 09:26:20 AM

Yes, you can save money by not buying from HP. I suggest amazon.com. They usually have some buyer reviews, pertaining to the seller, which may be helpful.

Solve : SD card wont work...Says to format??

Answer»

I have here a Impact 1GB SD card and when I plug it into my COMPUTER it says you need to format before use.

But IT wont format it just sits there.

So im wondering if SD CARDS can die.

It worked fine before but seems not to...no matter what format software I useI have a flash DRIVE that died, it did the same thing. Now if I plug it in it asks to format, and if I say yes, it SIMPLY says "there is no disk in drive H:" heh.

But... that was after a good 5+ years of use. They can die, though. Flash Drives and Flash Cards use the same memory technology.Write protect?Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 12, 2010, 09:19:57 AM

Solve : Modem activity monitored??

Answer»

Ok, I work for a major company and connect to my company's computer network remotely from home quite a bit. It is such a large company (over 200k employees nationwide) that it is a foregone CONCLUSION they monitor computer activity, which is one reason I am very careful to only do company work on the system. However, my wife had a concern...I connect through our household modem. Sometimes the wife will be using her computer wirelessly at the same time. She and I want to know if my company's MONITORING efforts are able to ascertain any detail regarding her internet usage since the information is going through the same modem. Can anyone help alleviate/confirm her fears? WOULD the company's monitoring activities detect any information from her computer, even if it is not connected to the VPN but is still using the same modem?

Thanks ahead of time,
MThey may monitor what you do once you're connected to their network, but other than that, no.They only monitor when you're on their network. When you are not on their network they do not have any right to track you.Who's feeding the parotts again ? ?Apparently he's only experimenting anyway.Experimental parrots....

They're the Blue ones with yellow bunting...correct ? ?In fact I believe that IS correct. And we have a winner

Mythran - you still with us? ALWAYS here....thanks for the info. I just wanted to know if their tracking ability could see what was being fed the modem outside their network. As long as my wife isn't logged into their network, it sounds as if her surfing activities would not be MONITORED through the modem. Thanks all.Not sure what exactly you're trying to find out here...

Solve : Problems with new SATA HDD?

Answer» OKAY, so here's an update.

The Windows 7 disk has got passed the splash screen and it now asks what drive I want to install it on. At first all that showed up was my external HDD. Then, I loaded the "5029" file using a flash drive and chose the xp folder to install the driver. It was the closest thing to W7 I thought.

It then recognized the drive as "Unallocated Space" It recognzed the 475GB free space. With that I hit Next and I got an error and the process RESTARTED. Now what? Unplug the external hard drive. Unplug all unnecessary peripherals. Just have the keyboard and mouse plugged into the computer. Remove the IDE drive from the motherboard. Just have the DVD drive and the new hard drive plugged in. Go into BIOS and load fail safe defaults. Try INSTALLING again. I think the problem is that there are no drivers for the SATA/RAID that work with W7?Quote from: EmoReaper on December 08, 2010, 07:14:59 PM
I think the problem is that there are no drivers for the SATA/RAID that work with W7?
Manual says ULi M1689, not ALi. Try uli_sata_v103.zip file.
This looks like it contains a Vista driver for the M1689. You can register on Driverguide for free.
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=879853&si=a6553917ca639be92099b059e1b76dc7Well I don't think it's gonna workout. That driver file didn't do anything different.

I was ABLE to use another motherboard that I had to install it on that drive. Actually I think I'm gonna stick with this other motherboard too.

Thanks for all your help and time. It was much appreciated. Cheers mate Why were you putting the driver on the XP drive?

Solve : Cache?

If I'm wanting to check the computer activities of a certain family member, will inspecting the CACHE tell me what she has been up to? What does the cache hold? Can it be accessed? Is there REALLY any way to tell what a spouse has been "up to" without PAYING for a forensic analysis on the computer and without installing a cyber tracking/keylogging PROGRAM?

(Please no responses on how I shouldn't have this issues with a spouse. We live in a day and age were a vow to be faithful means nothing sometimes, though I'm not quite sure it's gone that far yet.)

Solve : New video card issue?

Answer»

Just HOOKED up a new CARD, ati radeon hd 5850. Everything seemed cool but when i turned my computer on it made an extremely loud buzzing sound and no image would come on the screen. What do you guys think the issue is? I did forget to uninstall my previous VIDEO card before putting this ONE in could that be it? And also i cant take it back since i bought it on ebay :/I'd say it's a dead card. Double CHECK all of the connections. Make sure your monitor is turned on. (I say this only because it has been forgotten before).

And no, it shouldn't have anything to do with not uninstalling your previous card.

(I probably agree with JJ 3000 here, though).
