Solve : Sony Vaio Webcam Issues?

Answer»

Hi, I'm pretty new to this so apologies for any stupid questions!
My Sony Vaio laptop recently got a virus and had to go for repairs. The repair place had to DELETE everything on the computer but they put most of the software eg Microsoft back on. But since I got the computer back the inbuilt 'motion eye' webcam isn't responding and I can't find any files or tabs for it. On the Device Manager tab I can see that the Sony Visual Communication Camera is technically on the computer, I just can't figure out how to access it. It works fine when i'm on SKYPE but how do I get to it when its not through an internet site?!
Many thanks,
GDoes Device Manage show the device as working properly? Even if it does, PERHAPS you don't have the full software PACKAGE for it installed, the software that would have been deleted when the technician APPARENTLY formatted your hard drive and reinstalled Windows. You might visit Sony's website and search for software for the webcam. If found, download and install it.

Solve : External Hard-drive problem.?

Answer»

Hey guys,
I'm hoping someone might be ABLE to help me out here.
I have an iomega 500gb hard-drive that won't open when I try to click on it. The laptop I'm using is an Acer travelmate with Windows xp.
When I open my computer, the name of the hard-drive has changed but the letter is the same. When I right click on the hard drive it takes an age for the options to come up. Then I click on properties, to do an error check, but it doesn't seem to do it.
It says the hard-drive is completely full (using the coloured circle diagram), which I know it's not.
It lists used space as 0 bytes
Free space 0 bytes.

Anyone have an idea what it could be? Also, the C and D DRIVES are almost full on the laptop, would that have something to do with it?

I appreciate any help I can get as I'd really like to retrieve all the data on it.

Thank you kindly. I forgot to mention that when I try access the hard drive through my computer, it ASKS me (after a long wait) if I want to format it. Obviously I click no.Have you used the drive with this system before? Have you tried it with a different system to see if it works properly?Ya I've been using it with this laptop all the time. There was one problem before where the data disappeared but I solved that woth an error check.

I don't have any other computer to try it with. Though I do know someone with a MAC but I presume that's a bad idea really.Well, the EASIEST way to check whether or not the drive is good is to try it with another Windows system. You can always run chkdsk /r on the drive or download & run a utility such as hddscan (http://hddscan.com/)ok.

I just did a chkdsk. I thought it was working but when I tried to click on the f drive after it just said"the drive isn't formatted, would you like to format it?"
Sounds like the drive is shot, but you might want to wait for someone a little more hw knowledgeable than I am.I've had this happen a few times with different USB drives. Reformatting has "fixed" them every time. I have never been able to determine the cause, so I have multiple USB drives with the same data. Multiple backups of data on different media is a necessity, since there is no perfect media for data storage. IMHO, Iomega has been the least reliable since the introduction of the Zip drive.Ya I definitely won't be buying iomega again. I would just like to be able to recover the data if possible. Might need to bring it into a shop somewhere.check it on different operating system and also on different system, Also run scan disk and chkdisk for it. We've already discussed that.I have a friend who lives nearby, I'll ask him when he gets back from holidays, should be tomorrow. I'll report back.
Thanks guys!

Solve : new hard drive for laptop installation problem?

Answer»

i have a toshiba satellite a105-s4274 and i tried to reformat it and after it went most of the way thru i got a "ntldr is missing hit ctrl ALT del to exit" and called toshiba they said hard drive was no good so i buy a new hd and put it in and am getting this ERROR with the recovery cd in

pxe-e61: media test failure, check cable
pxe-m0f: exiting intel boot agent.
operating system not found

toshiba said i'd need to have a tech look at it which best buy WANTED $50 to install it and i ALREADY paid 50 for the new hd and the laptop itself is only worth 150 or so, so i'd like to get this fixed or just sell it, any info would be appreciated
Recovery CD only works with original hard drive by "recovering" the image on the hidden partition. Put the original hard drive back & try again. This will return the computer to the original "as shipped" condition & you will lose everything else.the old hard drive gives error "ntldr is missing ... hit ctrl alt del to restart" which toshiba says means that hard drive is no good? YET it was fine b4 i tried to reformat it for the 1st time with the cds that came with itI have a Toshiba too, have you checked the boot sequence in the bios?

Solve : Upgrading my CPU on my m2n-e?

Answer»

Hey, I've been thinking of upgrading my cpu. I'd like the best cpu that would complement my new graphics card or just the best in general.
I've seen the list of cpu that are compatible with this board but I don't really have an extensive knowledge of cpus

Motherboard: m2n-e
psu: gs600 600watt
cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 dualcore 3800+ 2.01 ghz
memory: 4 gigs ddr2 (not too sure about the ddr2 but I know I have 4)
op: WINDOWS xp SP 3
graphics card: xfx hd 5670 1gb

Another question as well is flashing a bios really that DANGEROUS? I actually had to flash it to get the 5670 working correctly. Besides having to restart my computer MANUALLY 4 or 5 times it wasn't too bad.

Thanks in advance.

I may just be blind but I couldn't find the edit button.
Disregard the SECOND question it seems this particular motherboard has some problems when it comes to ati hd 5 series. Which I fixed by flashing the bios to 1703.

Solve : Proliant RILOE virtual CDROM problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I've just installed a RILOE II remote management card into my server, and I can remotely power on and off my server, and SEE the console remotely. However I have 2 problems with the Virtual Media options

1) It says in the manual that you can select an ISO file on your client machine from where you are running the BROWSER as the Virtual CD, but there is no box to enter the filename in the CD section of the window. (There is for a virtual floppy) They even show a picture of the GUI in the manual which doesn't have the filename box!

2) If I USE Virtual CDROM on my laptop to mount the ISO as drive Z: and then tell the RILOE to use my PC's drive Z: as the virtual CD for the server, when the server boots it doesn't see the CD (If I climb into the attick and put a physical CD in the physical drive, it does boot from it so its not a BIOS setting)

Anyone got any ideas?

BTW. The server is a ProLiant DL760 G2 with a RILOE II card. The OS on the server is VMWare ESXi 3.5u4 (although that should be irrelevant) and the ISO image I'm trying to boot from is the FW 8.0 Maintenance CD for ProLiant servers. (as an experiment I've also tried using the ISO image for the VMWare ESXi 3.5u4 installation CD).SOLUTION: This card doesn't support virtual CD

Solve : Spilled a drink on surge protecter?

Was wondering if there might be a reset button somewhere in the cpu unit to get it to turn on. I have an HPWhen you SPILLED the drink on the surge protector, was the computer running?
There is no PSU reset button. There's sometimes a PROTECTIVE fuse inside. If not, the PSU is blown.
What was in the drink? On some PSU's if you REMOVE power and toggle the rear power switch a few times it will reset...( not the Red voltage switch )I've got to ask the obvious since you didn't post anything about it, did you try outlets other than the surge protector?ALSO i FORGOT to mention you should immediately replace that power strip....it's pretty much worthless now.

Solve : Video card settings and monitor problems?

Answer»

So I had a major power outage today.
The power suddenly came on and off and my surge protector did its job but my power back-up battery didn't (old Belkin obviously needs replacing!)

When I tried to start the COMPUTER again only one of the two monitors was recognized. I am on a Windows XP and I use an ATI graphics card to run 2 monitors that allows me to scroll and run my mouse and windows from one screen to another screens.

Because it was not recognizing the first monitor and the monitor was black I went to ATI display manager in order to enable it using the second monitor which was working fine. I clicked on the enable this monitor feature which is how you add a monitor to display(I have done this the same way many times before). I also DECIDED to make the first monitor (the monitor that was not working) my primary monitor. (This last part was the kiss of death!)

Now neither monitor is working!!! The first monitor (which wasn't working initially) is still black and the second monitor is blacked out /more like dark and I can only see the cursor. I can also scroll the cursor from one moitor to another because when I scroll all the way away from the screen the cursor disappears(I'm sure it would be visible on the first monitor if the first monitor wre working!)

I did the only sensible thing I could think of so I HARD rebooted my computer from the main power button. (A soft reboot ctrl/alt/del did not work)

Both screens come on successfully and both say Windows XP in the initial stages of the reboot. But once it is rebooted the first monitor is still black and the second is dark with the cursor.

I am at a loss as to what to do next.

I hope you can help. Thank you so much in advanceFrom your description, it appears that the monitors are functioning briefly at the boot. Disconnect the secondary monitor & work to get one monitor working. It could be that the driver software became corrupted in the power surge. Reinstall it, and start over, & hope the graphics card is not damaged. Thanks so much for your response.
Is there something I can do in the reboot process through the bios (not sure I am calling this the right thing.) I am referring to interrupting the boot process and booting manually or doing something that way?
Thank you so much!

I hope I can do it this way because I am not sure which monitor to even shut off firstThe primary monitor is usually the connector closest to the motherboard. You could also try booting to Safe Mode, tap F8 at start of Windows boot. You could also try entering the CMOS Setup (BIOS), what ever monitor displays is the Primary. So after trying to fix this on my own for FOUR hours you managed to get my off monitor on 30 secs.
OK..I took your suggestion and unplugged my monitor (took a 50/50 chance ..I did it before reading your last note)
So the monitor that was completely blacked out before and not working at all booted successfully. Should I re-install the software from here? (Hope I have it) or should I tery plugging in the second monitor again.?You can try it, now that you know which is the Primary port. May not need driver reinstall.Tried just plugging the moitor ack in and restarting. The same problem persists. I am going to go back to a single monitor and try to re-install the software as per your first suggestion. Wish me luck!OK..the re-install worked!
Thank you so much!!!

For some reason the display manager is recognizing the two monitors as monitors 1 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 (I am temporarily using two monitors instead of 4 as I am in between home offices. ) I reorganized the order of the monitors on the software so that 1 and 4 are set up next to each other so that I can scroll between the 2 smoothly. I can live with it this way but I am wondering if tere is an easy fix worth trying you may know about. Is there an assigning monitor feature? The number of monitors is based on how many display ports you have on the ATI graphics card. The ATI software should control everything. I have nVidia, so can't help you with how ATI works.

Solve : error code: 0x80004005?

Answer»

I just REPLACED my motherboard for my emachines T6532 with a HP 5188-5473 Nagami2L-GL8E Asus A8N-LA AMD motherboard and it started with an HP splash SCREEN. Windows Media Center 2005 then attempted to boot, but it won't let me into the BIOS or Setup options, then it asks me about eMachines recovery and I hit 'R' then F11, but nothing happens. My system CONTINUALLY boots to windows, asks me to verify windows, I say 'Yes', but then it gives me 'A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code: 0x80004005' Since my system will no longer boot to CD, am I totally screwed or can I somehow erase my harddrive and start over?

Solve : Printer on the blink?

Answer»

I am a little dense, when it comes to computers.
I have a Dell. I am working with vista, and I also have XP. I have two hard drives.
I am having a problem with my Dell AIO Printer. It was doing fine, then all of a sudden it would not work. I tried to select from the start menu, and it said the item was unavailable. It might be moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to delete from the list.
I have deleted it and tried to reinstall it, but now it tells me, incorrect port detected. The current print job has been cancelled, when I tried to do a TEST page. It said this printer is designed to work with USB cables only (which I have always had). How do I correct this problem? Dell is a joke
Thanks so much. Please go to "start/control panel/printers and faxes and tell us what is listed there. Include the one (if there is one) that has a check mark beside it.
Also go to start/control panel/system/hardware/device manager/ports and tell us what is there including any yellow asterisks or question marks.

There was one with a ? and I clicked on it and it had my printer listed.
I went to devices and it had my printer listed with a check mark on itOk what your reply tells us is that your printer is recognized as the "default" printer (the check beside it indicates that). However because there is a yellow question mark beside it in device manager that means there is a "problem " with it (which of course we know).
Now to try and solve it.You need to uninstall the current printer drivers. Here is the method to do that depending on your O/S:
Reinstalling the Printer Driver
Reinstalling the printer driver should be your first step. It is simple enough to do and it is a fairly quick process.
Enter the Uninstall Programs of your Windows Operating System
a. Windows XP - Start-> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
b. Windows Vista - Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features
c. Windows 7 - Start -> Control Panel -> Uninstall Programs
Select Your Printer
Uninstall Printer
a. Windows XP - Under Change Program, select Remove
b. Windows Vista - Uninstall/ Change
c. Windows 7 - Uninstall
Insert Driver CD
a. If it automatically runs, follow the instructions
b. If it does not automatically run, open the CD folder and double click setup.exe
Then you will need to follow EXACTLY the process for the reinstall of the drivers as per your printer manual. This is the area that most users MAKE their errors.I would recommend at this stage you 1st check on the printer manufacturers web site for the most current drivers for your printer/O/S and install those over drivers you may have on your printer software.
CAUTION there is a specified point at which you need to actually connect the printer to the computer.Ensure you follow that. If you do not have your manual it also can be downloaded from the printer web site.truenorth

Solve : Audio only from left channel?!?

Answer»

Hi,

I am having a bit of a problem with my audio on my computer, until recently it was fine and now I can only hear audio from 1 channel, the left - nothing at all COMING from the right. I have checked this also with my headphones to SEE if it was just my speakers going BAD but the headphones also only have audio coming from the left channel.

I am using the audio out RCA on the rear of the computer with no SPDIF connection. Maybe the connection from the motherboard is on its way out but I would apprieciate any suggestions from yourselves on diagnosing this problem.

I will be checking every day so PLEASE help me if you can

Many thanks in advance.
AmyDid you check your VOLUME Control, Balance in mid-range? It might be toggled on right channel only.I have checked the balances and all are OK. Still no sound from the right... Do you have a Soundcard installed? If yes, then look up to the Control panel for the installed card. If not, then ignore the suggestion. How about the Speaker Volume for both speakers? On Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Speaker Volumes... Left, Right.?no sound card installed just onboard audio from motherboard. I have checked the audio channel sends and all are up so vol should be heard from both both that right channel does not work at all...

Thanks for your suggestions so far Quote

On Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Speaker Volumes... Left, Right.?
Did it work before? Then the only thing I can think of is the connections or the hardware itself.Yeah it worked before and now only the left channel works, guessing that my motherboard has a problem....What has changed with the computer since the last time it worked correctly?

Have you tried to re-install the driver for the soundcard?

I think I can hear the CD Drive starting too.

1st 2 things i'd suggest would be DLoading and running both the HDD diagnostics and MEMTEST...

Solve : Sound Card Damaged??

Answer»

I had my girlfriend's Dell Inspiron 1210's keyboard swapped out after it stopped functioning and afterward it had issues with the sound - stuttering, clipping, distortion, slowing down and speeding. When a video file plays the problems with the audio effect the video as well. I gave it back to my friend who SAID that the audio card was loose but he put it back in place. It still has issues and I have tried everything including adjusting the equalizer and downloading new drivers (none available). I am thinking the sound card got damaged or compressed, but wondering if it would EVEN still function. The Dell is running XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 and the sound card is RealTek High Definition Audio. Thanks.Quote

am thinking the sound card got damaged
You are right. After you attempts to re load the drivers, there is not much else you can do. Try another sound card. Does not have to be an expensive one. They all make sound.I did a bit more research and RealTek is onboard sound vs a sound card. I am not sure what difference that makes with potential damage or not.It is very possible with the removal and reinstall of the laptop keyboard that damage may have been done to your sound card. If you don't want to spend a LOT of money on repairs to it then here is another option. Install an external sound card. Here is a link to a site offering many of them. It is only as a guide you may wish to find one elsewhere more convenient.
http://www.nextag.com/laptop-sound-card/stores-html
truenorthInspiron 1210 is a Mini 1210, i.e. Netbook.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRON1210&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=

There is no sound card, there is a sound chip, i.e. onboard sound. Your friend said the audio card was loose & he put it back in place? That makes him the miracle worker; why not let him fix it?He said that there was something loose that he pushed back in (that sounds filthy, not intended), both of us assumed it was a sound card. I have downloaded the drivers from the dell site above and they say there is no driver supported, even though the ALC269 HD is what is on the laptop.
I am still a little lost though, since it is onboard sound does that MEAN it is just a software issue I am missing or is there likely physical damage somewhere? If it is physical damage is an external sound card the best option?Without (our) ability to physically examine the location of the on board sound card it is impossible for us to be certain as to whether there has been damage to the chip. It is both possible to be a hardware (damage) or a software issue. It might be possible (but not guarantied) that if you can see where the chip is located and how it could be affected by the replacement of the keyboard then you possibly could see if replacing the keyboard COULD have damaged the sound. It is a very small computer and things must be pretty tight in there. It would be nice (for you) if you could accurately determine the fault before you expend any money but in the final analysis you DO have the external sound card option. truenorthI installed a SIIG USB sound card and Xear 3D and most of the issues are solved but there is still occasional stalling of sound and crackling like a vinyl record. Why would these issues still PERSIST?The fact that replacing the "chip" with your USB sound card and now having available sound is a big improvement. Now you are dealing with a sound "quality" issue. There can be a number of issues that can cause that.Is the sound quality the same whether you are on external speakers or headset? What is your sound media player program that you are listening to your sound with? When you go into control panel "sound and audio devices/hardware" is your new device shown there? Does the original on board device still appear in the list ? I would like you to download VLC media player (its free) and try to play a media source that is giving you current poor quality and see if it makes any difference. Also try different USB ports. truenorthExperiencing the issues with both headphones and speakers. Was using Windows Media Player, but the issues still occurred with VLC and streaming audio and video and tried all USB ports. Both USb and on board appear in the "sounds and audio devices/hardware", USB is active and on-board is inactive. Do these sound issues occur in ALL cases (such as when playing a prerecorded disc or file on your HDD) ? Or do they only occur when "streaming"? truenorthIt occurs in all cases (streaming and being played from the HDD)Just a wild shot in the dark...
Have you done a virus scan lately?
Just a hunch, but I have a paranoid reason.Fully scanned with Malwarebytes and Avast, no viruses detected. The issues seem to get worse in fact, audio and video are stuttering and stopping every second.Quote from: jto916 on February 06, 2011, 02:16:07 AM

Hey guys. I'm relatively new to the forums and practically a newbie when it comes to computers so I'm hoping anyone out there could possibly help with some advice/suggestions.

Games I play -
World of Warcraft:Cataclysm, Heroes of Newerth, Starcraft 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, DC Universe Online, The Sims3
I know these are some games that require a pretty decent computer but I play most of these settings on the lowest possible as I sacrifice quality for performance but as I progress in some of these games, I experience some lag.

Price Area I want to stay in $100-$500 but max price: $750
Willing to buy online or in stores, whichever would be best

If you think that I am just in need of new motherboard, suggest that as well with other suggestions. It's an old computer and I'm glad it's still ALIVE but its need of upgrades so I open to anything!!! If I miss any information that you need, please message me or post in this thread as I will do my best to reply and quickly fix. Lastly, I thank everyone who offers to help and for reading my thread. Thanks, again.First, I recommend backing up your data and then wipe your hard drive and reinstall the OS and applications. It could probably be junk collecting since you first booted your PC up, and then it should be faster in games.

Also, try to see http://www.hardware-revolution.com/best-video-cards-december-2010/ to see what is best, but I recommend the first option.Quote from: experimentaltech on February 05, 2011, 05:31:13 PM

That's not the sort of advice we give on this site. Reinstalling the OS is a LAST resort, not the first option. And it's the 2nd time he's suggested it in his short time here... Yep. Not to mention it's nonsense to begin with...

To original poster:

If you are having speed issues in games, it's probably your processor- it's CERTAINLY not your GPU. your Graphics card is (I think) two generations NEWER then mine (9800GT) and I personally haven't had any problems with any games, MANY of which are more "intensive" then those you listed. (NFS Shift, Crysis, Just Cause 2, among others).

a CPU upgrade might need a Motherboard upgrade, though... I'm not very familiar with most of the newer sockets.

Solve : Wireless card?

Answer»

Hi,
I hope this is the correct place to post....
I'm USING a Dell Inspiron 1520 running Windows XP.
My issue is that my wireless card will not load every time I turn on the computer. The little light stating I have WiFi doesn't come on and when I go into device manager the item is not there. but, after logging off two or three times it eventually comes on and then when I check in the device manager it is there. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this issue?

Thank you in advance,

SheilaYou could try the following :

- Go to device manager and uninstall Dell wireless card program if any
- Turn your notebook OFF
- Reseat your wireless card and turn on your Dell
- Update all related wireless drivers

Then check if the device manager recognises it and if your wifi card is functioning correctly. If you still have the same problem try installing another card to check if its indeed the cards problem.

A friend had a similar issue with another Dell and reseating the card did it for him. Hope it helps.Ok, I uninstalled my driver for the wireless card and rebooted my machine. I used my other computer and went to dell.com and downloaded the driver and tried to reinstall it and I'm getting an error "No compatible hardware found. the software you are attempting to INSTALL is not supported on this system. the software will not be installed."

Does this mean that the the wireless card on my computer is not even recognized and that maybe my wireless card bit the dust?

Please help. I'm so darn frustrated. I just finished fixing my other computer yesterday and now this ONE is GIVING me *censored*.

Thank you,

Sheila

P.S - WHEN I LAUNCH COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE THE WIRELESS CARD IS LISTED IN THE DEVICE MANAGER. WOULD YOU SUGGEST THAT I HAVE A VIRUS OF SOME SORT?

Solve : HP F335 three-in-one problem?

This machine worked fine with XP. Computer DIED. Bought a Dell laptop with Vista. Now
I can print docs but cannot scan.

Also, the machine will not copy. Wife took out the color cart - mt- and tossed it, so now
it only has black. Would that keep it from making a b/w copy? It's showing E cart missing, but it will print with only the black cart - looks like it would copy.

Any help appreciated. DixieflashDid you DLoad and install Vista drivers for it ? ?Yes but a note SAID that Vista did not support all features. I'm assuming that is the PROBLEM with not scanning?

Shouldn't it make grayscale copies of grayscale originals with only the black cart installed
and not even connected to the computer? I sure NEED to copy some documents.

THANKS. DFThere is no way of telling what features will or will not work without the proper drivers...sorry.Thanks for your help. Cheers, Dixieflash

Solve : Bios error beep??

Answer»

My computer has the past week started with this bios sweep-llyd which I've UPLOADED here: http://ge.tt/3tnnlvP (it was 6-8 sec. beepers before coming.)
And after this, my network connection has been mega unstable.

I've tried switching to a new gigabit Ethernet card - without that it has helped - and I've tested my ram through crisscrossing, and it has not REVEALED any errors or have helped.

So I thought perhaps there was a bios-savvy who COULD tell me what mistake the sound means?
(motherboard is MSI G31M3 V2, and the BIOS is AMI V1.2 from 24-11-2008) and tell what I can do to prevent / remove this error? The website of your bios manufacturer will list the beep codes.

Solve : WD Essentials Not Quite Working?

Answer»

I've had my WD Essentials SE 1TB Portable Hard drive for about 4 months and it's been working fine. Yesterday, HOWEVER, it would not be recognized by my computer or any other computer I plugged it into. Now, it may or may not connect and I have found online that reformatting it may solve the issue. The PROBLEM is, when I go to format it when it actually is recognized, it stops at 0% and says "Windows could not complete the format". In the Disk Management Admin tool, it SHOWS up as RAW File System and it is unable to format it there either. Later the Hard Drive was write-protected without me doing it. Please help.Have you TRIED the free disk tools from WD ? ?

My desktop doesn't beep, either, even though it appears to have the "beeper" SOLDERED to the motherboard. It's a branded computer & many features have been deleted from the BIOS. You should be ABLE to enter the BIOS with NOTHING attached except for the keyboard & monitor; no hard drives or OPTICAL drives will usually force it to the BIOS screen because there is nothing to start booting.

Solve : CPU temp too high??

Answer»

I just got myself a few new upgrades--motherboard, video card, CPU heatsink. But I notice that now my CPU (and GPU) TEMPS are REALLY up and down with their reading, and getting a bit too high for comfort (at least I think).

I'm running a GIGABYTE P55A-UD3 motherboard, 2.8ghz i7 860, with a GTX 470 video card. I know that this particular card is known to run hot, and I have a monster heatsink (COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus) on my CPU to help out, in addition to the 120mm fan on the rear of the case, an 80mm side fan, not to mention the built in fans to the PSU and the vid card itself.

I'm running on average around 50C at idle on the GTX 470, and around 35-40 on the CPU. But when I do anything that requires system effort--most notably, World of Warcraft--my GPU temp jumps to 80C and my CPU temp to anywhere from 60-77.

The heatsink is mounted properly, and I used the Arctic Silver cleaning solutions to prep and AS5 for the thermal paste. The heatsink is making perfect contact, it's not loose in any way. I expect it to be a little warm in there due to the close proximity of the GTX, but is it normal to have not only that much deviance, but also that degree of heat on the CPU?It is normal.
Questions:
What is your elevation? Ambient temperature? Humidity? Size of computer room? How many people in the room? Uh, well, I live in Florida on the Gulf Coast. So I'm not too high up in elevation, and with the AC on in here when it is the ambient temp is usually around 76F. Usually not too humid inside either (although outside can be another story altogether of course.) My computer room is big, like 15x15, and I'm the only one ever in here. I even have my desk intentionally caddy-cornered in here despite all the room specifically so that the exhaust fan on the back of the machine isn't close to a wall, etc.

You are safe. Both the CPU and the graphic chip are inside the safe zone. With your environmental conditions, nothing bad will happen. As far a s heat is concerned.

Here is a quote from a knowledgeable user o Tom;s Hardware.
Quote

The CPU will automatically throttle back when it hits 100 degrees Celsius to prevent damage, but the general CONSENSUS is to never let your CPU go above 70.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/283442-28-maximum-temperature-core
If you AC ever goes out and the room temp gets to 115 F, the graphics chip will likely fail before the i7 would. It is an i7?

Aye, it's an i7. I was just concerned that it was going as high as it was, when I've seen others talk about similar setups with the same chip and heat-sink that don't RISE over around 55-60C under load. Then again I recognize that I have an older and not so good i7 and that my video card will automatically raise the ambient temperature by a bit due to it's high operating temperature.Side note: If your video card ever goes above 100C, then I would reccomend taking the video card heatsink off and re-apply your own thermal grease. This does void your warenty and it may be hard to take off of some cards, but if it is going over 100, then it's worth the risk. I did this to a card that was running at 105 and started to glitch. After re-applying the thermal grease, it dropped to 80 and saved the card. Sometimes those manufactures are lazy and don't put the grease on right and that's why that happens.Yeah I plan to keep an eye on it. This particular model has a reputation of running hot with the stock heatsink and fan. I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place--a new heatsink for it would run around $65. But it's new--I could have just bought the 570 GTX if I was going to invest that much money in it. So it warrants a bit of observation.Thank goodness it wasn't the elevation or an overcrowded room...Well yeah, with all those HERDS of people in there at high elevation there is a risk the computer could pass out from oxygen deprivation....

Solve : 64 bit hardware not compatible with 64 bit OS?

Answer»

I bought my shiny new Dell with Windows 7 64 bit 6 months ago, and 3 months later, over the period of a week, I had several crashes and random restarts. It finally decided to not boot back into Windows one day. Dell, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to put the option for recovery mode in the Windows boot loader and not the BIOS. I downloaded Windows 7 64 bit and tried to boot. It got to the Windows is loading files screen and then restarted every single time I tried. So I dug around and found OpenSuse Linux 11.1 64 bit and tried to boot that. Got to the first menu, didn't matter what I selected, it restarted. So I did some more digging and found a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. It worked fine. So then I proceeded to download Windows 7 32 bit, and using the product key on my case, INSTALLED Win 7 32 bit without a hitch. I have searched the Internet high and low, but not a single thing I have read about has even come close to what my problem is; That my hardware is 64 bit, but I can't run 64 bit Operating Systems. I am an experienced COMPUTER repairman and software developer, but I have never seen a problem like this one and I have no idea where to even begin looking.

My Hardware:

AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8 GHz
ATI Integrated Graphics
NVidia GeForce GT240
6 GB DDR3 RAM
750 GB SATA Hard Drive

LET me know if you need anything else

Any help will be appreciated!Quote

Up to now only a few have had experience with 64 bit systems. In a nutshell, the 64 bit OS requires the device drivers to be written i n the 64 bit mode. Too few hardware developers are making 64 bit versions of the drivers for hardware products they sell.
Have we heard this before? Remember how Windows 98 drivers would not always work in Windows XP?

If it's only six months old it should still be under warranty. Why not exercise your warranty?

If no 64 bit operating systems work COUPLED with the fact that it was crashing and restarting, then I would suspect the CPU. If I were you I would want more conclusive evidence that no 64 bit operating systems will work. I would try several different 64 bit ISOs and use different media, like USB to try to install them.

Really, your best course of action at this point would be to contact Dell. Like I said, if it's only six months old it should still be under warranty.

This is just Déjà vu all over again.

No, I'm afraid it's not. 32-bit drivers cannot run on a 64-bit operating system because on a 64-bit operating system the drivers must be native 64-bit CODE. There is no whimsical magical pixie driver compatibility layer that allows 32-bit drivers written using 32-bit instructions and designed for a 32-bit environment and with 32-bit assumptions to run in the vastly different world of 64-bit. The change boils down to the fact that in order to create a 64-bit OS they had to have a 64-bit kernel, and the kernel needs to interface directly with the various hardware drivers and therefore they must be 64-bit as well.

Windows 98 uses a monolithic kernel architecture. Windows XP uses a Micro-kernel architecture. Windows 98 was based on their Earlier codebase. Windows XP was from the NT codebase. They were, in effect, entirely separate products. The only reason some windows 98 drivers ran on Windows XP was because those drivers ran within a specialized driver model designed specifically to make the goal of writing drivers for multiple Windows operating systems in those ays easier; the Windows Driver Model, which meant the driver code itself ran in user mode but interfaced with kernel mode; the idea wasn't only to make it easier to write multi-platform drivers but also to try to prevent blue-screens. The thing is, the fact that you could get any windows 98 drivers running on XP was a testament to their dedication to compatibility, it wasn't some engineered decision on their part to not let windows XP run windows 98 Drivers.

And of course your entire post has absolutely nothing, at all, to do with their problem or any of their questions.

Solve : Another bad hard drive question\problem?

Answer»

I just wanted to make sure that a hard drive for someone whom I am trying to replace is actually bad, and that it's not just the sata wires or something.

It all started with a blue screen during boot, on an older dell desktop. It was the "unmountable boot volume" blue screen of death message, on a SYSTEM with windows xp.

I was able to boot from a CD and and ran a chkdsk operation, there were many 'unreadable' or 'bad' sectors(don't remember the error message exactly, but something along those LINES). also, when i BOOTED into mini windows xp(from the cd), the "c:" drive had disappeared from windows explorer after a bit, and the computer was running EXTREMELY slow.

so now, how can i be sure that it's the hard drive(which, by the way, is a western digital caviar se serial ata - 160gb(model: wd1600jd - 75hbb0) and not the sata wires or anything? problem is, i took out the hard drive from the persons computer, but at home, none of my PCs are sata, they're all ultra-ata.

interesting, didn't know that you could 'humanely' kill a drive

so now, another problem;

the OLD hard drive was SATA 1.5, most of the hard drives being sold now(for a decent price, at least) are SATA 3.0. how would i know(short of asking the retailer) if a certain SATA 3.0 hard drive will have a jumper setting that will allow it to operate on SATA 1.5? looking on newegg, none of the info mentions if any of the SATA 3.0 drives are 1.5 compatible. All 3.0's are backward compatible to 1.5. Depending on the motherboard SATA controller, the new drive may not have to be jumpered to 1.5.

I'm not to bad at sorting out PC problems but this one is relay bugging me naw. I get no signal displayed on my monitor but, it happens at random, sometimes i use my PC for a few hours, other times it take a few seconds and other times it wont even go past DOS.(it will always happen WITHIN 3 hours thow. It dint seem to matter if I'm playing games, DL stuff, WATCHING film etc.

The PC has worked fine for a year this seemed to happen at random, one day it just said no signal and it has been doing it ever since.

I'm thinking it is my motherboard as i have tryed a few things to fix it, i just wonderd if it could be software cos it only happens sometimes.

Things iv tryed for a fix :
changed the GFX card for one i know works.
changed the monitor for one i know works.
changed the PS for one i know works.
cleaned all the PARTS inside my PC and updated all drivers.
I also tryed it on the onboard GFX and it did same thing.

The mobo is making its way to be a top contender based on your testing. You might wanna lower any resolution settings first and check your temperature while running the PC. lol, thx jason i tryed all that and didnt think about the tempriture of the pc ill give it a try when i get a chance.

Solve : Monitor issue whenever displaying black color?

Answer»

Whenever my monitor displays BLACK - Example - of the start of a movie its a black for a couple of seconds - or looking at a picture thats is dark

I see very very very faint WHITE lines kinda flashing, sort of like flickering faint white lines

It only happens whenever my monitor displays dark aka black IMAGES. Its very annoying it could be the refresh rate or hertz or something

Any know what im referring too?

Windows vista
Nvidia G force 9600 GT
proview 19 inch lcd monitor 2 ms response time
So get the obvious out the WAY, drivers up to date? Is this a new problem? If so, what did you change? New hardware or software? If it has ALWAYS done it it could be a bad monitor/cable, and you only notice it when the screen is black but it is always doing it, just the lighter colors are hiding it.

Vista used to have many many hardware issues, and I would have pointed to that, but these days it is a much better behaved OS so it should not be that.

Solve : ps/2 keyboard beeping?

Answer»

keyboard started beeping during laggy typing (due to low memory). continued for long time, so i unplugged hoping this might cancel the queue. beeping stopped, started again when plugged back in. then i restarted. then "uninstalled" DRIVER thru device manager and followed prompts to restart (required twice). beeps steadily every half second or so while windows (XP) is loaded. beeps twice when comp is turned on, with a more "digital" sound. beeps with same digital sound steadily while boot PROGRESS bar shows, then stops beeping while screen turns black. after windows starts loading but before it finishes, beeps start again with a lower-pitched sound.

please help, this isn't my computer so i need to fix it within next 2 hours else owner will blame me for problem even though he's nearly computer-illiterate!!Check to make sure a key isn't stuck in the "down" position. Also, try a different keyboard to see what happens (and / or try this keyboard on another system).I can't FIND an 'edit' button. I forgot to add, repliers, don't forget about mentioning any services that may be required to install and/or DETECT keyboard.

Also, the USB keyboard required a restart before it would work.?

Solve : can't get cd drive to be recognized?

Answer»

Have older Pentium 3 machine. as I was having an impossible time getting it to boot up-I was able to reinstall MS DOS and now it boots up fine.
I can't get the CD Drive to be recognized so that I can reinstall Windows XP.
Any ideas? So you said any ideas, right? I first idea was to ask you if you'd like to have ANOTHER Pentium III and I will donate it to you.
But that may be not what to want to hear. You want to install an operating system without any way to boot from the BIOS. Yes, there is a way to do that. It is buried in the Microsoft knowledge base somewhere in the stuff about installing Windows in the when you don't have a way to install from the CD drive. I have used it just one time to install windows XP, or Dell machine that would barely meets requirements. I got it to work, it is not SOMETHING I would ever want to do again.
Also, I don't think I would want to tell you how to do it. Not unless you insult me real bad and I come to hate you real bad and then I'll show you how to do it.Because this is the SORT of thing you would want to inflict only UPON your enemies, and not upon your friends.

The problem is that MS-DOS does not have a built-in memory management unless you look at boot time. Something like the HIMEM.SYS something like that. Otherwise, it takes ages to install windows XP street from MS-DOS.Quote from: floridal on February 07, 2011, 01:43:33 PM

Any ideas?
When you say you can't get it to be recognized do you mean you can't boot from it or do you mean something else? Please be specific. While the drive will light up=if I type in D: it says drive not recognized. From my gleanings of other threads it seems that changes may be needed to the autoexec.bat and config.sys files but I don;t know how to execute that .You want to install XP, is that correct? Do you have an original retail XP CD?yes i do and the original xp upgrade that they sent me. (lucky I have a laptop to access other info).
thanks for your interest in my problem I'm not sure what an XP upgrade disk is. What does the disk say on the label?the disc says microsoft windows xp Home Edition Upgrade. it was sent to me not long after I originally bought this emachine 4130. I think that XP had many bugs in the original distribution.
On the envelope-I have the original XP product code-so I have great hope to make this work -if I can get the cd drive to work again (as it did before the latest set of problems).
I also have the factory Emachine Restore discs-but they are also cds.Okay, here's where I think we are. First the good news - that disk should be bootable. Which means if you go into the bios and make sure the cd drive is the first device in the boot order, then insert the cd and reboot, you should be able to boot directly to the XP disk (go ahead and try if you like - that will clear your mind about the cd not being recognized).

Now the bad news. The XP update disk will do a clean install, but only if you can prove that you have a PREVIOUS version of Windows. At some point during the installation process it will ask you to insert the CD for an earlier version of Windows before it can proceed. If they sent you the upgrade disk, does that mean you have another XP Disk?I don't seem to be able to change the Primary Master from the hard drive.
Secondary IDE Master is :
Device ATAPI CD ROM
Samsung CD ROM SC-14
LBA Mode Supported
PIO Mode 4
Multiword DMA-2\UltraDMA-2

Type Auto
LBA Large Mode Auto
PIO Mode Auto
DMA Mode Auto
32 bit Transfer Enabled

If I can get the thing installed-I could probably download Windows Service Pack 3-instead of the Upgrade Disc-but both my XP discs were from Microsoft. Now I'm confused. You have DOS installed. Do you also have a previous version of XP installed?
And who said anything about primary master anything? You need to go into bios and change the boot order, that's all.

Please - start at the top and tell us EVERYTHING that is going on. At this point I'm not sure what is installed on your computer, what disk you have, or what you are doing. Thank you.Quote from: Allan on February 07, 2011, 03:27:21 PM
If they sent you the upgrade disk, does that mean you have another XP Disk?

The t4130 originally came with Windows Millenium Edition. For an XP upgrade install the following operating system CDs will suffice as “Qualifying Media” for a clean install: Windows NT Workstation, Versions 3.51 & 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, Windows 98 (Original & Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition. By design, Windows 95 was not supposed to qualify, but due to a bug in the XP install routine, you can do a clean install (not an upgrade install) using, as proof of qualifying product, a Win95 OS disk.

The dos install formatted the hard drive-so the only thing in the directory is the ms-dos and associated items.
I do not understand how to get the Bios to change the boot order. When I enter the Bios and go to the device I do not get a way (that I understand) to change the boot order-or any way to get the CD (D drive) toi be recognized.
If I get the unit to see the D: drive-I think it would solve the problem.
Must go out for an appointment-will review the suggestions upon return. Thanks again.
Are you saying that the cd drive is not listed in the boot order? And do you have the original install disk from the previously installed version of Windows?Make Changes to the Boot Order

OK I see the Atheros driver. The only thing that I have installed on the system is an Actiontech Wireless N USB Network Adapter.
You need to install the chipset driver followed by all other drivers.OK, thought that I did originally, as I have the file on the computer. Did it again just in CASE when you first mentioned it. Now just have to sit and wait lol. It will BSOD with in 10-15 mins if it is going to Ill be back to let ya know.If the problem continues, the only solution I SAW on the web was to discontinue wireless access and switch to an ethernet connection. If that's not an option you might want to contact Qwest.Yeah saw the same thing So far so good though. I thank you for your help.yepLaaaame got the BSOD again. Yeah, based on the other posts I saw with a Google search I thought you might.Wonder what it is. I wouldn't think reinstalling Windows would do anything. Ima pull the USB adapter and see if I BLUE screen with it out. If it doesn't then I take the adapter outside and smash it with a hammer. As I said above, it might be worthwhile to contact Qwest.Curiously, why Qwest? You mean Atheros?Sorry. Yes, Atheros

Solve : Raid problem (help needed)?

Answer»

I've made a big mistake.

I had my pc set up RAID 0 using the Nvraid drivers on an ABIT KN9 motherboard, which can be found here:

http://www.abit.com....PRODINFO=Driver

I was using windows xp.

I have 2 identical seagate 250gb phyiscal drives set up as 1 logical drive, showing at 465.77 Gb.

Everything was FINE until I tried to upgrade motherboard and processor.

I was upgrading to a Asrock M3A UCC AMD 480X Socket AM3 Motherboard. I plugged everything in and followed the instrutions for setting up the raid system in the bios. As a part of this, it involved ERASING THE MBR which I did, stupidly and unthinkingly. Looking back, the instructions seem to be about setting up a new raid system from scratch, not really what I wanted to do. So, I stopped what I was doing before any formatting started or anything stupid like that. I suddenly realised that there was a lot of DATA on the drives that I didn't want to lose (and I hadn't backed up - lesson learned...again :/), and decided the best way forwards was probably to go back to the old mobo, try to get it to load, and back up what I needed to my eternal HD, then I could go ahead with my upgrade and if that involved wiping the disks and reloading xp then so be it, no problem.

Now I am in trouble becuse when I try to boot up the system, I get a "no boot disk" type of error.

So, having done a bit of googling, I realised that I probably need to use the xp recovery console to "fixmbr".

Here is where it gets wierd. On in the BIOS I an see my NVIDIA STRIPE 465.77 Gb RAID 0 Array. Good.
I can even look at the array (listed as "healthy", and the separate physial drives in the MediaShield raid management software (by nVidia). Great.

Now, when I try to use the recovery console to "fixmbr" I get the "Setup cannot detect hard drives - try installing manufaturer drivers from floppy" error. This is odd because, as I said, I an see the array in the BIOS and in Mediashield. Of course, I have the NVRAID driver floppy to hand and when I try using that (after pressing f6 in the xp setup program) it loads the nforce raid and sata storage drivers, then when I hit R for reovery onsole it does not give me a "choose your windows installation to fix" OPTION, instead it says "invalid command line or location" and gives me a c:\ command prompt where I can't do anything, and fixmbr goes through some weird motions on a drive that doesn't exist before telling me to reboot, and I'm back to square 1.

Its a dead END there for me, I simply do not know what else to try. I have 1GB of holiday photos locked on those drives which will not load and they are very high in sentimental value. If anyone can think how I can boot these or even just get those photos off, I would be sincerely grateful.

Edit: The shorthand for this whole post, really is, "Why can xp recovery not see my array, when its visible in the BIOS and in Mediashield?"
Double posting only confuses people who are helping. The mods will lock one soon. One post per question is all you need. I've deleted the other thread. How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Installcomputer commando,

Thanks for the reponse, but it doesn't help, as anything I do from the boot cd menu gives me the "no hard drives detected" error Google "RAID Recovery".

Solve : Wireless Acces Point Vs. Wireless router?

Answer»

Just wondering how does a wireless access point differ from a wireless router. I am new to alot of this computer stuff so if you have to break it down in to looney tunes ( Wyle E. Coyote VS road runner) terms anc pictures, i wonr be offended.

thanks

Coyote has lots of resources, he is the wireless router.
Road- runner has no baggage, he is wireless access point.
perfect...i love it.....HA HA.

Next question why would someone use one vs the other ??They would use an AP when thy have no need for a router.
Router are more often used when you have other things to do.

Example;
You have three PCs. Two Desktops, one laptop. They can all connect wireless. But wireless can only go 54mbps under good conditions. So you get a router that can do both 100mps Ethernet as well as wireless. Faster file transfer between the desktops. The laptop goes wireless so you can mover around in your living space. When friends VISIT, they use the wireless for their own laptops.

Not much use anymore for a simple AP. But there are special needs where the AP does a better JOB. But that can be debated.
Some routers don't like it if you use them as an AP. (Maybe it hurts their feelings? ). Anyway, APs are so seldom used by home users & now no longer cost-effective.
I have three routers in my home system. Had one AP, but it could not take the heat. So it is in retirement. Only one router does DHCP. The other two ACCEPT that and just do the job.Sounds like a router has more BELLS and whisltes. I just found out that the router has the software for a firewall and other security features, and the WAP dosent ? I really appriciate all your help. thanks

Solve : External Drive format problem (Mac and Win)?

Answer» Drive A – Seagate 2TB (current format FAT32)
Drive B – WD my passport 071A (current format GPT)

Here is the issue. I have two external DISKS, drive A and B, used for BACKUP and storage primarily. They are in quite good condition and have not been dropped, hit, etc. to my knowledge. I recently TRIED to use them and both would not appear on my computer (running WinXP). I opened disk manager on XP and Drive B appeared but nothing registered and it looked BLANK (although it said it was a healthy GPT protected drive). Drive A had nothing.

I then plugged them into a Mac and using Disk utility both appeared (but could not open the FILES on either, otherwise the Mac would just crash). When trying to reformat (that’s all I could do at this point) drive A came up as: error: resource busy. Drive B – error: could not unmount disk.

Please let me know if I need to put any more information, and if the issue can be solved.
How do they show up in Disk Management in Windows ? ?

Solve : Unable to cut and paste?

Answer»

Ever since I've installed my NEW secondary external HARD drive (JT-36-EU-BK One Touch Back Up), I can copy and paste, but I am UNABLE to cut and paste within my primary internal hard drive. When I ATTEMPT to do this I receive the message: "ACCESS is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." On the other hand, I can cut and paste with no problem within my external hard drive and from my internal to external. Does this have to do with the installation of my new external hard drive and the permissions? How can this be fixed?

Solve : "New" build behaving badly, I am stumped.?

Answer»

As I have mentioned in another thread I upgraded my old system a bit. That meant that my "old" parts (meaning less than a year old) went to my husband. This is what is happening.

Among the upgrades was a change over to Windows 7 from XP. After I put it all together in his case, the disc for Windows 7 refused to load beyond the initial "loading Windows" boot screen--I eventually pulled the HD (a < 2 month old WD SATA) and inserted into MY PC to do a simple format in the hopes that would help.

It seemed to to a degree because eventually I was able to get 7 LOADED up; but it kept hanging up. I had to manually restart a few times, and it would pick up where it left off. It took me over an hour and a half to get Windows 7 installed, whereas on my machine it took me little more than 20 minutes.

At random points of restart it would either restart just fine, or it would hang on boot, and hitting the reset button would "un" hang it.

Eventually hubby took over and started to try to download some of his files from our backup WD My Essentials drive--and when he plugged it in to the front USB, the machine turned off.

NOW my WD Essentials drive (about six weeks old) is DEADER THAN A DOORNAIL. I checked to make sure I hadn't put the USB connections in wrong--and by check I mean I pulled them and put them into the other USB slot available on the motherboard--and the USB port connects fine. Honestly I don't know which came first, the chicken or the egg, on this one.

I made the mistake of walking away and leaving the machine on; when I came back a few minutes later it was off. I thought it was the standby mode that Windows 7 seems so fond of activating by default--but it would only come on when I hit power, not by mouse or keyboard touch.

Further, when power was PUSHED the monitor would not come on--not until after I physically unplugged it and plugged it back then. Then it failed to load and hung up again.

At the MOMENT I have power completely pulled so as to prevent any other shenanigans, and am staring at the guts of this thing trying to decide if I should pull it all apart again. I have no idea what the deal is, the only thing I did was move the components from one case to another, and add a different processor. Everything else is identical to the rig I was running. (And yes, I did have on a wrist strap to prevent static discharge.) I triple checked to make sure there were not any misplaced screw connectors under the board as well.

This is what we have:

GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2
Intel i3, stock heat-sink with AS5 thermal paste
2x2GB DDR3 RAM
500W Antec Basiq PSU
DVDRom x1
SATA drive x1
IDE drive x1
GEForce 8800

I have ALREADY reset BIOS to default though I haven't yet reset CMOS for the kicks and giggles factor. Any advice would be appreciated before I throw myself or this computer in the canal--whichever comes first.Your frustration is palpable and very understandable. As a general comment i think that given ALL the things that have been moved PLUS the attempt at upgrading the O/S there are too many variables as to where the issues are. This comment i find intriguing "DEADER THAN A DOORNAIL" in reference to your "new " HDD. What makes you so positive the drive is dead? It is too bad you did the hardware transfer and the O/S upgrade as it appears at the same time (before you had established that the hardware all functioned). Anyway what's done is done. How are you plugging in a SATA HDD into a USB port? My advice at this point would be to install the minimum hardware into your "new" case to get it to run then add things one at a time until a problem occurs then at least you would have a handle on the problem and could deal with it.Right now it is just too much to get a handle on. truenorthMy new external is deader than a doornail because it won't load up on any PC anymore; it's simply not recognized. Per WD website, that means it has failed and needs replaced. It was working fine until it was plugged into the "new" machine that then shut off. It now has an RMA in progress.

At this point I have narrowed it down to a motherboard issue. I pulled the whole thing apart AGAIN, and while in the process found that some of the Arctic Silver cleaning compound had somehow remained on the heat sink and fouled the paste (which I of course IMMEDIATELY re-cleaned and made triple sure was free of any detritus before re-seating the heat sink), it wasn't anything that was causing this malfunction.

I researched about "slow Windows 7 load and install" and found several things that could be the problem--first being the Floppy drive being enabled and causing the machine to stall on checking a drive that wasn't there (so I disabled it in BIOS per recommendation) and second that sometimes a stick of RAM needs to be removed during install. It helped, but not entirely.

The behavior it exhibited was one of a mainboard glitch. I finally threw in the towel and updated the BIOS, which I am always LOATHE to do; it went from a version 3 to a whopping version 11.

At this time the system is behaving in a stable fashion. My belief is that despite my precautions, when I transferred the board to a new case somehow it corrupted or simply glitched the BIOS, and the update solved the problem.

So are we having a party to celebrate this rejuvenation or do you still have issues you want help with?truenorthI like parties.

Solve : looking for a SD card reader for my laptop?

Answer»

I'm looking for a SD card reader for my laptop and have no clue what WAY to go. i'm guessing it'd have to be USB cause i only have one other SLOT on my computer to plug things into, i'm not sure what it's called though just that my belkin internet card slides into it. i'm not really sure what brands are good or not. i'm looking for something at a descent price not too expensive. if anyone has any advise i would greatly appreciate it. thank youThis one works very well: SD Card ReaderthanksIf as it appears you are about to use up the only available USB port to attach your card reader it would be a good time to also get a USB hub before you need it. Which would be the 1st time you want to have another usb device connected when the card reader is also connected. Very inexpensive. truenorthwhats a usb hub? and where would be the best place to get one? They are a common as grass and readily available at almost anywhere that computer hardware is sold. Not knowing your country it is not possible to specifically state a retailer. They are also readily available at on line stores that sell computer stuff. IE Tiger Direct. They come in 2 choices basically Powered and non powered. I suggest the powered type. Here is a link to help you get a handle on their function (only GIVEN for education) not as a recommendation of one to purchase. This link is for powered

Here is a pictoral example of what they look like and what they can do.
http://www.atpm.com/16.10/newertech-usb-hub.shtml
When you get to a point of either picking a specific one or feel ready to buy one you can google search your chosen retailer on-line or bricks and mortar retail outlet and peruse their choices. They generally come in 4 or 7 port units. For your INTEREST you can daisy chain up to 128 usb ports from one outlet (not that you will ever want that many) but simply to say they are an excellent way to add the ability of connecting usb peripherals to your computer.truenorth

Solve : Jetway JHA12-LF Driver and SATA Issue?

Answer» HELLO. I am not SURE if I posting my issue in the right area as I am not sure if it hardware or software related. I have recently built my new system as I do every year as its been my hobby for 15 years. I have never ran into this issue and for someone who though they have seen it all I am learning otherwise. I have choosen a Jetway HA12 motherboard for this build against my better judgement and my problem is after I install my OS (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) I can not get the driver disc to run. Now both LG DVD Burners are brand new so Im not sure if those are the issue. BUT...the funny thing is I put this disc into my wifes LAPTOP to get the RAID drivers I NEEDED and it ran fine. I will post complete specs at the bottom of the post. I do keep back up drives because I never know when they may be needed so I switxhed them out and still no go. The disc in question just sits in the drive and spins. This is the first time I have ran across an issue LIKE this and its really driving me nuts. The only thing keeping me from RMA this whole board and going back to a different brand is the fact I got the basic drivers from their website. I have TRIED to contact Jetway of this issue and 2 weeks of no return emails or phone calls so that is discouraging as well. So here I am. I would greatly appreciate and input to this matter and thank you in advance. Here is the system I built.

Jetway HA12-LF Motherboard
AMD Phenom 2 955 stock clock
8 gigs GEIL DDR3 1600
Powercolor HD5770 x2 in Crossfire
Thermaltake 850 watt Modular power supply
2x Western Digital WD5002AALX 6gbs HDDs in Raid 0
2x LG GH24NS50 DVD Burners
Rosewill RCR-IC002 Card reader
Thermaltake A90 midtower case
Logitech G510 keyboard
Logitech MX 518 mouse
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
PS The drives read all other CDs and DVDs I have put in it but that one.
Thanks again

Solve : Which wireless router to buy? Which 802.11 adapter in my laptop??

Answer»

I'll be using this router behind my ISP's Arris TM502G cable modem. I'll be connecting 3 PC's wired, and need the wireless range to reach the living quarters (well insulated) in my barn ~ 100' from the routers location in my house.
Will a 802.11 n router reach?

Also how do I dentify which factory installed 802.11 adapter is in my HP 6715b laptop? The specs list several. I don't see any listing for 802.11 in system information or via Everest Corporate Edition

I'd like to spend as little $ as possible.
Suggestions for which to buy?
!st off the range for the wireless function may be overly GREAT for adequate reception without some additions. It has been my experience that distances over 60 feet (and even less sometimes) can be PROBLEMATIC for adequate reception. My recommendation would be to purchase a wireless router (transmitter) that has the ability to plug in an antennae. Then buy an antennae that is the best you can for extending the signal range. I am going to tell you what i use.I have an Airlink 101 Model ASB-10MA ant. connected to an Airlink Model AR430W super G router. Before i changed the antennae my maximum full strength signal distance was about 40 feet now it is at least 80 feet. Still would not meet your needs. So to further increase my range i went to the other end of the issue. For a different reason than yours i wanted to see if i could increase my reception range in a mobile situation for wi fi reception on a laptop. I purchased a "Wi-Fire" (www.hfield.com) external antennae receiver for the laptop. It was advertised to increase the range "up to" 1200 feet. The operative word was "up to" My experience is that it varies greatly (MOSTLY due to intermediate structural interference) but i have successfully received adequate signal at about 200 feet. As I'm sure you can appreciate many factors can influence your range and reception not least of which is the power of the transmitting source. While i have mentioned very specific products for some of them the market offers many choices. So i suggest you do some research on what is available to get the best product at the best available price. good luck, truenorthQuote from: lectrocrew on February 08, 2011, 02:32:20 AM

Network adapters show up as network adapters.

The reason that wifi adapters don't show up "classified" as 802.11 is the same reason we don't see standard ethernet cards/capability classified as 802.3; that is, we normally just call it ethernet. For some reason the 802.11 IEEE classification for Wifi has become more ubiquitous as a synonym by comparison.Quote from: truenorth on February 08, 2011, 09:03:11 AM

Thank you for your information truenorth!!! Based on it and my research I decided to try an 802.11n router / adapter only w/ no external antenna capability, purchased from my local Walmart, SINCE they have always refunded/exchanged any device in the past with no problem. That way, if the 802.11n range will not fit my needs I can return to Walmart, then go with the antennas on a different type router with external antenna capability from an alternate supplier. (Walmart had none).

I bought
Belkin Surf N300 Wireless N Router
and
Belkin Surf & Share Wireless N300 USB Adapter
These work FINE for my 100' range. Also, I tested max range via taking the laptop w/adapter further from the router and it connected fine streaming video until ~250'-275'. At that time I lost the connection.
But at 100' it works fine, and it allows me to stream video on two laptops (1 USB N300 adapter at my barn - 1 USB b/g adapter in my house) and music on 1 desktop (wired 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet) simultaneously.
I had an issue with setting up the communication between adapter/router but this issue was solved via phone call to Belkin support. (I might add that I was very impressed with the service I received from the Belkin tech. This has always been such a big issue for me when selecting which brand equipment to purchase).

I'm sorry. In my post my terminology was inaccurate. I did not look for 802.11 devices in Device Manager, Everest, System Information ect. I did look for "Network adapter".

Obtained from your website: Quote
"The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up, there's no law against whacking them around a little. (Eric Porterfield)"

So I submit myself to be "whacked around" at this point, but just a little. lol

Now, onto an issue with this PC and it's factory installed wireless adapter that has me baffled, and, on which I need your expert help/explanation:

When I viewed Device Manager at the time I first posted this thread, under 'Network adapters', it displayed only:
Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet
Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Bluetooth Device (RFCOM Protocol TDI)

(The button on the machine to enable wireless connections was set to 'on' at this point).

As posted previously, I installed the Belkin N300 network adapter. Now, after viewing your response, I opened Device manager and found, under 'Network adapters', the hardware shown in this print screen image

As we now can see, this machine does have a network adapter installed:
Broadcom 4321AG 802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi adapter
This hardware required driver installation, the results of which are shown in the print screen link posted above.

This adapter now works fine and I will test the range tomorrow morning to see if it will connect to my 100' situation as discussed already.
If so, I can return the Belkin N300 adapter and re-claim my much needed $45 + tax.

My question is: why did this hardware not show up when I first started this wireless project 3 days ago? But read on:
I also just installed Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit OS (OEM disc for system builders I purchased 4/15/2009) in place of XP Pro on this machine 3 days ago.
But this fresh OS install was done before I ever posted this thread. And 130> Windows updates were downloaded and installed in order to correct for the 2009 Vista X64 SP1, among other old software/hardware issues'
I accessed device manager several times after the install in order to find drivers for my hardware that was flagged as ? in device manager.
after which, until today, the only hardware device flagged was my fingerprint scanner, which, as you can see in the linked image, is still without a driver (more about that later - maybe in another thread).

Long story short:
The machine is performing fine now. I'm just curiuos to learn why the Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n-draft adapter did not show up in Device Manager until after the Belkin N300 adapter was installed?

Thanks again for your help for many years around here BC!
