Solve : mouse issues??

Answer»

when I click at the top (HEADER) I can get the mouse to WORK fine, but when I try to click on the page I can't get it to work. ie., I can TYPE in the browser and work the arrows, so I ca for EXAMMPLE get to facebook, but when the page comes up I can't click on anything on the page, that is, no hand, just an arrow.Did you try another mouse? What kind of mouse do you have?We know that the mouse click works and that the ponter moves, so I doubt it is the mouse unit itself. I am suspecting malware infections as the cause of this ISSUE. Please try a post in the VIrus/Malware forum section and they wil be able to guide you further.

Solve : A problem with my dvd writer..?

Answer»

good morning dear members ..

I had a few problems with my dvd writer .i coped some files on it and burned it then it enjected the dvd .. in my computer screen space were TAKEN from the cd (space of files)as regular but when i entered the cd no files where in it but there were space taken by the files so i tried to BURN it again then it told me not enough space.
i don't know what is the problem with it
i would be thankful if you helped me

best regards from kareem Quote from: kareem eltanahy on January 03, 2010, 03:28:22 AM

so i tried to burn it again
Did you try again with a new cd or the same one? Is it a CD-R ?it was the same one then it told me not enough space then i tried another one but no files appears so i tried different files it was the same problem that appeared with me the last time it is freaking me out The most common cause of files missing on a CD is because the CD was never FINALISED...
ISOBuster can retrieve them for you but it sadly is no longer FREE.it completes it all and says it is finished the cd .but i tried different files but the same problem . You need to determine where in the burning app you are using is the setting to "FINALISE" a burning SESSION...
We can't tell you because you haven't told us what your burning with...nerokareem eltanahy, Is this a new problem or have you always been having this problem with trying to burn Cd's? Although "Nero" is one of the 2 most popular burning softwares i have found it to be quite unreliable and prone to problems (as is "easy CD creator"). I have used both and now am using http://cdburnerxp.se/download.php
which is a free burning software. I have yet to have a problem with it and it is very easy to use. I suggest you give it a try and see if it solves your issues. truenorth1)it is a new problem.
2)i will try it .but thanks

Solve : Graphics Card suggestions?

Answer»

MSI (at least here in China.) because it offers CHEAP Tier 1 products. ( $72 for the MSI nVidia GeForce GT440 1GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card N440GT-MD1GD3/LP over here vs $80 on amazon.)

I can't SPEAK for in the U.S.... but I'd be inclined to say XFX because it seems to OFFER warranty which covers modding and overclocking.I'd say they're all pretty much the same, as they all follow the specifications of the chipset MAKER. I'd just look at price and warranty for individual models of the card you're interested in.Alrighty, thanks for the ADVICE everyone. I'll probably end up buying a 6870 or something around there.

Solve : Notebook not starting.?

Answer»

Firstly, hello everyone.
The notebook of interest here is an Acer ASPIRE. After the usual bios starts it just comes up with a blank screen. I FIGURED it was maybe a corrupt boot sector, so I placed a version of Windows XP in an external DVD drive (bloody notebooks..), changed to boot order to load the cd, and then it came up with the usual blue screen where it says 'Loading Windows Files (etc etc)' and then when it just flicks it reading 'Loading Windows Setup' it flicks to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. To my dismay i realised it was going to be a bit more of a pain than anticipated.
So after trying again for good luck, no luck.
The error CODE was 'Stop 0x0000007B', which when read up on on the Microsoft help page it doesn't give a lot of help. Non-the-less I tried to follow the steps provided, but considering I can't even get into DOS to run CHKDSK or anything of the sort then I'm a bit limited.
So, getting to the point I tried REPLACING the HDD and RAM with no results. I starting to think it could be a problem with the controllers (I'm sure that's what I mean) so unable to run any hard drive properly.
I'm fairly competent with computers and their hardware, but LAPTOPS, I'm not so hot with their hardware.
It could just be a write off, but I don't like to give up until I'm sure that it's reached it's retirement.
Any ideas would help.
Thanks a lot,
LukeCould be your CPU or overheating which might cause this problem. Can you check that your laptop is not becoming very hot?

Also, you can try as well to boot a Linux Distribution from a Live CD (Just Boot, don't install it). Then, you can check If your laptop boots and runs normally under Linux. A good distribution is Ubuntu (http://ubuntu.com) and I think it also includes memtest86+ in the Live CD.

Solve : Gaming PC, First Timer, Need Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

i am looking at building my own computer, based on graphics, with a slightly heavy lean torwards gaming, almost strictly single player.
and now, after a solid 8 hours of scouring the web, i have a few questions. mostly looking for your opinions.
after digging and digging, i finally found a decent tutorial/walkthrough/guide on how to build your own gaming PC, and have boiled down my prospects to a few choice picks.
i was wanting to know your opinions on these OPTIONS, or any options you would advise me to look at, again in regards to what I'm looking for.

the first board is the ASUS M4A79XTD EVO found here:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A79XTD_EVO/#specifications

and the second board is the MSI 870-G45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard found here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130290&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-Motherboards%20-%20AMD-_-MSI-_-13130290&AID=10440897&PID=3356762&SID=

either or would be using the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad Core:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727&cm_re=amd_phenom_ii_black_edition-_-19-103-727-_-Product

2 sets of the: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop MEMORY Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ here:

1, maybe 2: SAPPHIRE 100328L Radeon HD 6770 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card found here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102940

thinking about the Thermaltake TR2 600W Power Supply:

http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-tr2-600w-power-supply.html

and the PSI Cyclone Case - Black for the case:

http://www.xoxide.com/psi-cyclone-case-black.html

So, as it stands, what are your opinions?? let me know, i want any and all inputs possible. Thanks!!!
A few changes:

  • ASUS boards are really good but if your budget allows, try looking for a higher range one that has USB 3.0
  • I've had a few bad experiences with Thermaltake PSUs, For a high quality one look at Corsair or Enermax
  • I strongly recommend getting a case from a big manufacturer (Antec, Coolermaster, Fractal Design .etc) That case does't appear to be WORTH the money, as it doesn't seem to have very good airflow or any features that I would expect for that price such as toolless entry/drive mounts - It also doesn't appear to be that well made.
Unless things have changed in the last couple years (I did a lot of research when I built my last pc) you are probably better off buying 1 video card for $200 than 2 for $100 a piece. Quote from: Berenost on May 29, 2011, 06:06:31 AM

Don't forget to include some kind of protection against lightning - you never know when it may strike!
You pretty much are all set to go-I just want to add that you might want to consider using a good thermal paste for your CPU heat DISSIPATION and maybe invest in a cooler that is more efficient than the stock cooler in the Phenom box.Quote
fter a solid 8 hours of scouring the web
Is that all? Is this going to be a cheap PC? What is the budget?

If thou want to spend about $1500 for a high performance gamer. you need to do more that 8 hours of research. Maybe 80 hours of research. Interactive research. Like what you are doing here.

IMHO, if you want t o spend less that $750 for the whole system, you are better off just having a reputable company build one for you. They buy stuff in wholesale lots and they know what works and what does not. And they give a year or more warranty.

It's computer parts. Not cancer treatment! On Sep 3 2011 I REVIVED this thread that had been dormant for 3 months by suggesting that the OP might want to consider lightning protection. I did that because the OP had just started a cheeky thread (now removed) begging for money to be sent to him via Paypal to replace his computer and monitor because his house had been "struck by lightning".

Solve : Printer problems on a networked printer...NT4, Word 97, and no passwords.?

Answer»

I am having printer problems, and I am about to lose my mind. The printer is networked and is an Epsom. I can get a test page to print, and only certain files, which are saved under an old users name(i.e., Pat Personal Files). I can not alter or add anything to any documents saved under this old users name and get the document to print. I did see a message (for a split second) SAYING that the information may be "READ only protected". Also, I can get some information to print on an Excel worksheet (headers),but no information in the cells prints. What makes this a real challenge is that we do not posses any administrator passwords. The old Operations Manager has been fired and is under investigation(for alleged CRIMES). The organization I am trying to help is a non profit and does not have the money to hire real I.T. help (maybe in June 2010). There are many documents that I have to print on a daily bases...that would be a pain to enter on a different computer. And some of the old documents may need to be printed again for insurance and legal reasons.

We use NT 4 and the documents are contained in Word 97. The problem is not the NETWORK or the printer, it's the ownership of the files. You have to LOGON as the Administrator and take ownership of the "fired employee's" account.
Google "windows NT file permissions".

Solve : reselling motherboards???

Answer»

I can buy some motherboards for really cheap. They are untested though, and some have bent pins. I was thinking about buying a bunch, TESTING them and SELLING them for more. What do you think?Wasn't there and old proverb something LIKE "A fool and his money are soon parted" all though I see many advertised on CRAIGSLIST around here. Your DIME Have you looked at the price of used motherboards on ebay? or the new prices on newegg? They would have to be high end , bought super cheap and sold super cheap. Personally if I'm going to go through the trouble of motherboard installation I want to know I have a good one with a warranty. What boards ? ?
Cost per board ? ?
Expected selling price ? ?They are just too hard to win. The wons that are worth it anyways. I tried, but I guess people put a higher maximum bid or something. Ive tried all the way up to $21 for a 790i. Its not worth the risk.

Solve : May have lost EVERYTHING on my 500 gb HDD ...Sad day?

Answer»

Hi guys

A week ago i was playing around with a program called 100% Alcohol ( Setting up virtual drives). while doing so it sppears that the virtual drive replaced the position of my 500 gb HDD

So i thought easy i just have to allocate a new letter to my HDD. So i went in to the "Computer management" and tried to change the letter. By mistake i accidentally converted the HDD in to Dynamic (Which i believe wipes the MBR from the HDD) as well I managed to put GTP on the drive . so i finally managed to rebuild the MBR but now it shows as unallocated and WANTS me to format. This is not what i wanted as i have all my files on there. I ended up finding instructions on how to REMOVE the GTP using diskpart but i only used the "clean" function as the next step was to format. so now i have removed the GTP but it still wants me to format and i have tried so many programs to retrieve the data it's crazy. is there any way i can get my files back?
You could try a program I used when this happened to me called Find and Mount (F 'N' M).

It searches for old partitions in the MBR and you can mount them as drives to copy the data off of them. Unfortunately the free version only lets you transfer STUFF at 2MB/s or something like that..so my drive recovery for my full 500GB drive took 3 full days

But the key thing is...IT WORKED.

You can get it here:

http://findandmount.com/

Good Luck!Thank you for your reply, i must admit the program looks great though i have just COMPLETED a Normal & Intellectual Scan but nothing appears. Before i try the Full scan will i need to prepare my HDD drive (Format it)? first. Also do you think the"Clean" feature in "Diskpart" may have caused this?. Whatever you do don't format it.

It needs to have as much original data as possible to get the best results

Data recovery sure isn't as easy as it used to be NOOOO!!!!!!! i did all the scans and picked up nothing... Im currently trying a program called "Restorer" but this is the last straw. Looks like i have no other choice but to start over if this doesn't work. Hook up the drive as a slave in another working desktop before you give up completely...
Your data is probably still there.

Solve : Hard Disk not detected?

Answer»

Hi Friends,

I have purchased a new Seagate Barracuda 250 GB SATA Hard Disk for my Desktop. It seems this new HD is not detected by PC. Previously i was having Seagate 120 GB hard disk which is burned and not usuable now. My system is AMD Athelon 64 BIT processor with MSI motherboard VIA K8M800-CE + VT8237R chipset. It will support Raid0 or Raid1. I have a raid floppy disk with me. It used for my old HD, i don't know whether the new HD required any other Raid. When i try to install Windows XP 2, as usuall it will ask for Raid and i have inserted the floppy. Sytem is reading from flopy but unable to detect KD. Please help.

Thanks and RegardsDid the Seagate ship with a CD with diagnostic SeaTools on it ? ?
If the drive is not formatted it will not be recognised.
The SeaTools are available at their website FREE.

Does the BIOS see the drive ? ?
If not then you need to install the SATA drivers for it.
These will be available at the MBoard manuf. SITE...In other words is the drive partitoned? All drive are shipped with out them an you have to creat them. It has nothing to do with partitions...it NEEDS to be formatted if it isn't...
Of course partitions can be created but that is not the issue...
You're also ignoring the fact that it may be missing SATA drivers as well.you never know till you do one thing first.Quote from: squall_01 on September 07, 2009, 07:43:03 AM

Solve : drop outs in internet?

Answer» HI,

For some reason there are always DROP OUTS in my internet. At first I thought it was the ISP, but it seems that when i switch to another computer, they were able to use the internet.

So when there are drop outs i looked at my assigned IP address. It is LIKE 169.XXX.X.X which is outside the 192.XXX.X.X range. How is that possible? Why would my IP address change like that?

Solve : Very Strange problem?

Answer»

I am using an pavillion laptop with xp / I use my laptop mainly at home but occaisionally use it at my OFFICE.
The only problem is that as I am using it in my office the computer screen will go to vertical bar lines or a light blue screen.
I will not be able to do anything with it and have to reboot. this will happen maybe every 5 minutes or not happen for an hour or so.
this only happens at my office an has NEVER happen anywhere else as I have taken this laptop to other countries as well as other states.

It does not matter if the battery is on charge or not, if I am using the internet by cat 5 or wireless. It only happens in my office and only this computer, as we have other computers and it never happens to them.

I do not get it, any one have an answer or have any one heard of this.

Confused !tennacres, Very strange problem! Does this phenomenon only occur when you are "on line' or does it also happen if you are not connected to the internet? Interference would be my normal suspicion however given that it is so random as to when it can occur that sounds unlikely.Do you have the ability to try it in a different LOCATION within the same building?truenorthThanks for the reply.

It is a small office and I have tried it in different rooms. It does not matter if you are on line or not and has never happens anywhere but there.

I brought the laptop to my office for the first time in about 6 months and with in about 60 minutes, bang the screen went to vertical bars.

Like I said only there, and not on any of the desk tops that are in use.

Just strange, but need to understand it so that I can fix it.Are you running a certain PROGRAM when it happens that you dont normally run anywhere besides the office? No, I do not do anything different. Same programs etc.

I once thought it was the wireless internet, but I went to cat 5 and turn off the wireless.
Tried different electrical outlets.

Just don't knowGiven the great multitude of variables where the computer DOES work and the uniqueness of the conditions under which it acts up i would have to say (and it is certainly a guess at this point) it must be an environmental issue associated with your specific laptop and the office environment. What that could entail i have no idea. Given that it does NOT malfunction anywhere else i cannot logically see how it can be anything else now that "cruisin 702's thought has been eliminated. I suspect the answer will be "no" but do you use any add on hardware at the office (like a an external HDD or flash drive) that you use only there? truenorthBuddy,

The only thing that is diiferent is the location. But, what could this be to EFFECT the graghic or video out put.

Magnetic, electrical, evil sprits.

Why only there, and only this laptop.
Just very strangeI just don't think that laptop likes going to work with you...
As you said...it's fine everywhere else...I agree with truenorth, RF interference would be my first guess.

Are there any business near your office that use high power equipment like MRI's, are there any airports or military bases that use high powered radar? Any large antennas like TV towers, or radio stations?

I can only guess that your laptop isn't shielded as well as the desktops.

Question: I have Hitachi SATA drives installed, but it shows them as "NVIDIA STRIPE 931.52G" in the DEVICE manager. Does this make a difference?Oh, it's a RAID array, but it does say healthy. I guess you have 2 drives to test. You will need the CD (iso) image to burn a CD on your working machine. When I tried to use the software, it was only looking at my IDE drives. Found nothing. I didn't see any software for SATA or RAID. Any other suggestions?Try the Seagate SeaTools, it works on most drives.I was wrong about the other software. I hadn't waited LONG enough for it to find my drives. I thought it had locked up or something.

Once I let it work, the computer locked up (see my other thread) before I was able to choose a drive and start the test.

Once I did start the test, I got the disposition code 0x00. I believe that nothing was wrong.Rather, I think that it meant that nothing was wrong with the hard drives.

Any other thoughts on what might be causing the issues?Quote from: Computer_Commando on AUGUST 09, 2011, 01:04:57 PM

OK, switched it with my OLDER video cards. Seems to have removed the problem, so either the video cards are bad or, like Shadow said, the chips need cleaned.

However, another problem has cropped up (rather, cropped up again, as I've forgotten it was there since this problem arose). My computer will randomly lock up. Sometimes when I'm doing something intensive, but most of the time when the computer is doing nothing (discernible, yes I realize that the computer is likely always doing something). Any variety of activities (or just moving the mouse), and the computer simply locks up with only a reboot to regain control. Anyone have this problem?
I used to have my PC lock up randomly, but that happened after I accidentally ripped off a few (voltage) PINS of my processor... the problem went away with time. No lockups so far in 1 month. It was bought as new running on Vista. I have ran windows 7 and the computer is sluggish and unresponsive. I have tried xp , but as the pc was made for vista most of the drivers are missing.
So far I have done a clean install . The pc can work fine for a hour or two or just TEN minutes before a blue screen appears. Each page never the same as before, can be mind dump, usb prob , driver. But it boots up fine and have tried to update and make sure drivers are up to date. I am the pc now. I find I have a bsod mostly when I go online.
Any thoughts. Big thank you in advance.Download BlueScreenView to your desktop.

unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All

================================================You have installed 3 different windows system, Are you using Vista? yes
it came with vista on it , i did dipe it purt on 7 it was running slow then xp and just couldnt get drivers so went back too vistsa
1. Try running system file checker -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
2. Then use Safemode with Networking. On first boot up, tap F8 and choose the option. Use it for a couple of hours and check if you get the same BSOD.
3. Post current protection softwares installed. Make sure to acquire all drivers directly on HP support site with the corresponding OS you installed.
*editedDid the BSODs occur with all three versions of Windows or just Vista? When I first aquired the pc it had Vista on it and it was doing it then. I did put windows 7 and it ran so slow but it never suffered with bsod. I did run win xp too but the prob with this was no drivers were available.
I have since this morning opened tower up and gently brushed away all dust, which was a lot and I am surpised one fan worked as it was pretty built up. At this moment it has been running about six hours with out no blue screen so at the moment this is a good sign. Hi,

Do you remember making any recent changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I would suggest you to follow the steps in the link and check if the issue persists:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Resolving-stop-blue-screen-errors-in-Windows-7

Also check event viewer for error follow the steps in the link:

Solve : Timed out?

Answer»

i kid people often with the same "bad joke" about "....not realizing that i am Nostradamus "

As it pertains to this last post i had a feeling that my note would time out and for whatever reason the note is not retained so when one reinserts their name and password the note as it was typed goes to the right place and person.
In order for that to happen here one needs to take other measures. Since it has happene to me a number of TIMES i can tell you fairly confidently what to do to make sure that you do not lose your post, thought, place in line So without further ado i will tell you what to do: copy at minimum before you hit the post button and take it one step further by pasting it in a word, word pad ( my most frequently used WP program ), give it a name and be sure to hit "save" just in case. Then even if you get a blue screen it will be saved so you can repost it if the motivation is still there are cleaning up after MS does it's little tantrum.

So that is what i did. i will post it here and take the risk of having SOMEONE telling me to only post in one place. If that comes up i am SORRY and if you have the power to delete or redirect it to the rith place thaen i will be satisified with what you think is best.

Here is the post that got timed out:>>>

>>>"Patio is one of the best when it comes to staying with you to find a resolution.

i did not see him as if you tried booting in Safe Mode and if you have does it present the same warnings?

Once again i will admit that i know far less that most of my CH brothers and sisters but i will now take an oart to take the time to attesmpt hel with questions that i know something about and it may be something that can/will help you.

i realize for twenty ten that i must contirbute as what i do know and offer it wit the caviat: There can easier be someone in our group who as a much BETTER answer and can get right to the point. But know this: i will read your question(s) and give you the best answer that i have at the moment that i reply.

i have also been asked for my bios password. When first given a chance to create one i do so and keep it in a safe place.

As this question in a way is like the one that i just answered, i would suggest a program on the computer that store this data so if you have no other access you can get to it quickly.

The answer that i gave here now is one that will work if you started out in the way that the PC wanted you to do so. Of course that in and of itself is a good question and comment on it;s own....if i can contribute more info on your subject i will do so.

Good luck and happy new year!I'm sorry - I don't understand this post at all. What is the question?err... if you still have the post that timed out... why not place it in the thread you intended to post it Sometimes less is more...and better too!

Solve : 1TB external harddrive, power disconnected while in use,now won't read any files?

Answer»

HI, We had brought our 1TB external Hitachi hard drive (XL1000) on which I had some movies and stuff to watch on the laptop on our vacation recently. The power cord accidentally got disconnected while the external hard drive was plugged in one of the laptops that was using a file on the external Hitachi drive. When we reconnected the power and started it up again, the laptop was not reading any files on on the external drive. It stated that the external hard drive was not formatted and needed to be formatted before it could be used. Needless to say , I DID NOT go forward with the formatting as I knew that would erase any files left in the hard drive. I have since hooked up the Hitachi hard drive to both laptops (Acer 18 months old, and a Toshiba 8 months old, both using Windows 7)) and now that we have returned home, to the Dell desktop ( 4yrs old(maybe older?), windows Vista) all with the same results - there are no files on the Hitachi external hard drive.

Is there any hope in recovering the over 600GB of files on the this Hitachi external harddrive?
I would crack it open and connect it via SATA to a desktop computer INTERNALLY as a slave drive to where you can address the hard drive with a bummed file system. Then run check disk on the drive to try to repair it. If the external drive was jarred when the power was disconnected a head could have made contact with platter and scratched it. If thats the case then depending on the NATURE of the physical damage check disk may not be able to fix it and you might need to use a utility like GetDataBack NTFS. I own a licensed copy of a bundle deal of their software and it works great for retrieving data that is orphaned in a destroyed file system. This software searches drives even ones that have the all so well known armature clunk failure and is able to address the drive and sweep the data off of the platters with each clunk sweep and reassemble "most" of the data. As long as the drive spins and the armature can sweep either by clunking or being addressed by the software data can be retrieved.

I used this software on a laptop that took a flight of stairs as it was running. Engineer WANTED to get to a meeting and bring his running laptop with him and well....laptop slipped from his hands while running and it cartwheeled down a flight of stairs ending with a destroyed laptop and of course data that was critical and only resided on that small damaged hard drive. I got back about 80% of his data and he was fortunate that his months of work that wasnt backed up was included in that 80%. His music files etc had some stuff missing which was acceptable than 3 months of lost engineering work at a multibillion dollar corporation.

Data recovery on his drive took 5 days to sweep and reassemble. His drive had the clunk of a dead hard drive.

Here is the software, but its not cheap. Maybe someone knows of a free option that will work. http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

You can download the trial of it to test before buying. I did that first and then when i saw the data just a $80 payment away, I bought a licensed copy to be able to grab that data which is otherwise read-only until fully activated to write to a healthy drive and recover. I ended up buying a bundle package for like $170 for all file systems and raid recovery TOOLS etc.

Quote

GetDataBack will recover your data if the hard drive's partition table, boot record, FAT/MFT or root directory are lost or damaged, data was lost due to a virus attack, the drive was formatted, fdisk has been run, a power failure has caused a system crash, files were lost due to a software failure, files were accidentally deleted. GetDataBack can even recover your data when the drive is no longer recognized by Windows. It can likewise be used even if all directory information - not just the root directory- is missing.

The OP did not mention the make and model of the external device. Nor did he say it was in or out of warranty.
Some Hard Drive makers have an excellent warranty policy. Others don't Knowing the make and model and date of purchase could make a big difference. Can this Portable Hard drive be powered by a USB or Dual USB cable? Might want to check first if its the AC power adapter is faulty as not carrying enough voltage output after it was accidentally disconnected. My Toshiba portable HD sometimes recognizes it as "needs to be formatted first" when using just a single usb cable, knowing that there are files already stored. Using a Dual USB Cable will correct the problem. There are two models of the Hitachi-XL1000.
They are not as reliable as Hitachi wants you to believe. Avoid using these drives unless the low price is what you can not resist. You get what you pay for. The drives have a poor reputation.
Both models on sale.
http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-XL1000-External-Drive-0S02484/dp/B0039ZYBMQ

The problem is not the interface not the power supply. It is the drive itself. And you can not fix it unless they have a firmware update.
......
EDIT: Moderator, before you ask, look at this. On Amazon, 7 out of 12 gave it the worst rating.

Dead after a couple months
Do not purchase this drive. It died after two months of use. I have never had an external drive die so quickly before. It would not start up on any operating system and appears to be cycling as though it can not start up. I failed to research this product online before buying and that was my mistake. I hope my review will protect others.

Notice the report has been up 8 months and Amazon did not remove it. That says a lot. If the customer was wrong, they would have removed his post.
An yes, I CROSS checked with another site that had about the say thug to say about the Hitachi 1!TB drives mentioned here. And there are other random forums where people grip about this model.

You haven't listed down all the details of your computer yet-like Manufacturer make and model, CPU, PSU wattage, RAM, and maybe even take a picture of your motherboard so we can point out exactly how to upgrade the graphics card.

Your current graphics card is PCI-E, so you can upgrade to just about any modern graphics if your PSU is up to the job.

Solve : Core i5 2500k Heat Issues?

Answer»

So I ordered this i5 2500k machine from NCIX about 2 months ago. In that time, I've noticed it gets abnormally hot.

It has a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ cooler a Coolermaster 850w power supply, a P8P67 Pro motherboard and an AMD Radeon 6970 GPU. The case is a Thermaltake.

The issue is that even on idle without an overclock, at idle, temperatures are about 45-55 degrees Celsius. That's running at 1.6 GHz. When under LOAD, it will run up to about 75 degrees, again without an overclock.

When I apply an overclock to 4.7 GHz, temperatures come to about 90 degrees. This SEEMS absurdly high, as I've heard of people getting the same overclock and still being around 60 degrees with this cooler.

I've reseated the cooler to see if that was the issue, but no luck. I didn't re-apply any thermal paste, and I'm still getting the same readings.

What should I do? That is way too high. can you check your fan speed from the bios or with speedfan/hwmonitor/hwinfo32?

Is the case fan mounted properly? i.e. blowing OUT of the case, not sucking air in?

You might be limited by case airflow-the Radeon 6970 is sure to generate an amount of heat, and with cramped cases this will be a factor in the problem. Try opening the side of your case, get a house fan blowing at it, and see whether your temperatures decline. When idling, system fan speed is around 931 RPM, and the CPU fan is around 1234 RPM. Average temp of the cores is 48 degrees.

Under load, system fan speed is around 1070 RPM and the CPU fan is maxed out at 2000 RPM. Average temp of the cores is 86 degrees, and this is running at 4.7 GHz. The temp maxes at about 92 degrees. These numbers are from Speedfan and CPUID.

BOTH case fans are blowing out properly. Quote from: Transfusion on August 13, 2011, 08:09:15 PM

Solve : risks of disk partitioning?

Answer»

i was just WONDERING if ther are any risks in DISK partitioning? can anyone help plzzNo risks whatsoever, other than the PROCESS of creating partitions if the drive already contains data. If so, you just need to make sure you follow instructions and proceed slowly. Always create a backup of your data before PERFORMING ANY drive level operation.
Depends what type of partitioning operation you are thinking of. There is no risk in partitioning a new or blank disk. However if you are attempting to shrink an existing partition to make room for a new one, there is a risk of lost data if you don't back it up somewhere first and something goes WRONG.

Solve : Input not supported.?

Answer»

This is an issue that I thought was resolved with my computer. When it came up the first time it was a different fault but something along the same lines. I first replaced the motherboard because of onboard graphics CARD. After replacing the motherboard I had the same issue, no video on monitor and no beeps with seemingly everything powering on the way it should. Then I replaced the PSU because I found it missing a leg of voltage going to the motherboard was missing. So, I replaced the PSU and it WORKED. It has worked for about two weeks and now it has stopped working again. Now I am getting "input not supported" on the monitor. If anybody has any questions as to what I have or anything that can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.Quote from: ginnie2010 on October 03, 2009, 10:38:01 AM

You changed monitors or graphics card and aspect ratio is not support on monitor.
Aspect RatioOK. So my next question would be, how do I fix this issue if I don't get a pic on the screen? Also, would it just stop working after about two weeks of doing just fine? Thank you for the help. Can you get into Safe Mode?Quote from: ginnie2010 on October 03, 2009, 10:38:01 AM

1. Don't know what this means.
2. Before or after #1?
3. You now have replacement mobo; EXACTLY the same as the 1st?
4. How could it power on if the psu was "missing a leg of voltage "?
5. What stopped working, the psu?

1. What that means is it was doing the samething, but gave a different fault on the monitor.
2. I replaced the motherboard because the geek squad at best buy suggested that, because it was an onboard video card.
3. You lost me there?
4.The voltage that was missing from the PSU was a 5V leg going to the motherboard power connection.
5. The PSU looked as if it was working because the fan was running and the light was on.
6. Same thing this time, the PSU looks like it is working NORMALLY, light is on and the fan is running and everything is getting power except the fault DISPLAYS on the monitor and that is as far as it will get; No bios, nothing.

I am going to check the PSU again. If that is the problem again. I have a power issue going to the computer I would think.

This is not a reliable indication of a PSU working properly...it takes next to nothing to run a fan and LED light.Have you tested the monitor on another computer? To the guru, I know it takes nothing to run a PSU that is why I said I was going to check it again. And when I check it I check it to the schmatics and with a multimeter. To answer the question about the monitor, I have tested it on another computer and it did work. So I am left scratching my head some more. Thanks guys for all the replies.Quote from: patio on October 05, 2009, 07:51:44 AM

Solve : Severe Stability Problems in New Installation of Vista/New Computer?

Answer»

Hi guys! I'm at the "bash head against wall" stage and would love your help.

Specs:

- OS: Vista Home Premium 64-bit (legit)
- CPU: Phenom II X3 720
- Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
- GPU: Asus 8800GS
- RAM: 2x2GB DDR3 Corsair XMS3 TW3X4G1333C9
- HD: WD Caviar Black WD6401AALS
- PSU: Antec EA650

This is a new computer for me, save for the GPU and other minor components I'm recycling (DVD-ROM, floppy drive). It's actually my first time putting together a computer from scratch, and I was somewhat proud of myself until the trouble started. I followed all precautions known to me, so I don't think static or shorts or anything else has caused the problem.

Basically, once I get into Vista, it's only a short amount of time until the computer resets, locks up, goes to a black screen, one of the above plus beeping[/i], or in one CASE, a BSOD that said something about an "IRQL" problem. This even happened during the installation of Vista itself, though seemed less of a problem, only happening once or twice. Otherwise, I'm LUCKY to go a couple of minutes without a crash. There have been times I've gotten farther, and able to install some updates and drivers. But nothing's helped.

Here's what I've done to troubleshoot so far:

#1, I've uninstalled EVERYTHING and put the main components back together outside of the case.

CPU: Not an expert on CPUs, but the BIOS reports the temperature is fine, and I hear it's extremely rare to get a bad CPU.

Mobo: I've flashed the BIOS to the most current version.

GPU: I've re-tried the GPU in my old set-up, and it's fine there.

RAM: Don't have any other RAM or DDR3-compatible boards, but I've run five passes of memtest+ error-free on one stick, and about one pass on the other (can/will do more; just haven't had the time). I've also shuffled around the RAM to different slots on the board.

HD: Have outright reformatted and tried installing Vista on this HD on my old machine (only new PSU was shared due to how I'd set things back up), and it worked fine. Ran check disk from Vista last night for a while, and no problems turned up. I also tried connecting my old HD to the new computer set-up--the one with my old XP installation on it. And I still got crashes. Lock-ups every time I booted at the welcome screen when it popped up the activation warning.

OS: Seemed to run a bit better after BIOS update, so I tried downloading and running Prime95. Locks up or resets every time I start a test.

I've tried troubleshooting at another forum and have a techie buddy helping me over IM, but we're kind of at a loss. My experience with computers I'd say is limited, but I know the basics. Unfortunately I don't have another motherboard or CPU I can try. I would guess that a motherboard problem is most likely at this point, but I don't know how to confirm that.

One newegg reviewer said that the motherboard's auto-tweak feature was detecting his RAM voltages incorrectly, and he had to set them manually or else he had stability issues (even though he wasn't overclocking). Is this a possibility in my case? I don't know anything about tweaking RAM or what settings it should be at, so I'm not sure how to look into this.

Any thoughts? Thanks so much!Remove one of your 2G RAM sticks...preferably the one you have not tested yet and do a Clean re-install of Vista.

Re-boot and take the machine thru it's paces for a day or so...
If all is well after that power down and add the 2nd stik of RAM.

PS. Remember to reinstall all your drivers...MBoard chipset drivers 1st.Thanks for your reply, patio.

Tried to do as you suggested. But this time (unlike any previously), Vista installation was extremely sluggish, taking five minutes just to reach the language selection screen, and another five to reach key entry. Finally got there though, and made it all the way to 17% file expansion when, of course, it locked up.

From there I tried to determine what was causing the slowdown. Switched DVD-ROMs. Switched IDE cables. Switched RAM sticks. Switched RAM sockets. Switched SATA outlets. No dice. Same problems.

Also got the message at post "BOOTMGR is missing", which my friend told me only comes up when there's no bootable partition on the HD. But, I was trying to boot from CD/DVD, so this confused me. I know this definitely happened after I double checked my boot order. It's what caused me to think there might be a problem with the DVD-ROM, but I had the same issue using another drive. Could this point to a motherboard problem?

For now I'm running a pass or two of memtest on both sticks. I know this isn't the most efficient use of the program, but I stupidly forgot which stick was which and I need to let the computer do something on autopilot while I take out the trash. Before I go to bed, I think I'll move the HD back to my old computer once again, and try to install Vista there again, to try to rule out a bad HD as being the cause of tonight's slowdown, at least.

Big question: if I were to go on a buying spree of replacement parts, what do you think the best purchases would be?

RAM is a good buy, as I could run all purchased sticks together after I have everything up and running. But limited use of memtest hasn't turned up anything, and those five passes I ran on the one stick would usually be enough to indicate a problem, wouldn't they?

Motherboard seems like a good option, as well. Though I'll definitely be mucking around with an RMA, restocking fee, or PRIVATE sale at some point.

The Vista installation test I'm going to run later tonight will hopefully rule out a bad HD, once again.

GPU would seem to be a stretch given that it works fine in my other system.

CPU would be expensive, and a harder/more expensive item to unload/restock. And CPUs are much less likely to be bad out of the box, right? You can run MemTest on the RAM...follow the info on creating a bootable CD...
Grab the HDD diagnostics from the drive manuf. site (FREE) and again follow the info on creating a bootable CD.

That will at least eliminate/confirm 2 of the suspects...
Windows does NOT need to be functioning for you to run these tests.
Best of Luck and let us know...

Solve : Gateway DX6822 won't turn on?

Answer»

I turned off my machine, and then unplugged all of the cables as I had a NEW computer desk I was putting together. Once the desk was built, I plugged everything back in, and my CPU now won't turn on. I did not hit it, or drop it, so I'm very confused.

My assumption is the POWER supply, but I don't understand why that would have stopped working. As well, this PC has the power button built into the case at the top, and I can't figure out how to remove the casing without breaking it. I was thinking maybe the connection came LOOSE from the button, but again, I was very gentle in moving teh machine.

Does anyone have any ideas so I don't have to CALL Gateway and pay minimum $99.99 to get them to tell me I NEED to buy new parts?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Can't find Gateway DX6822, Gateway has no listing; Google comes up blank. It's a 4822...Do you actually have power going to the computer from the mains? I don't mean just plugged in.

Solve : My system?

Guys, I have some more evidence of a problem. If I am playing CoD4 with just one Google Chrome tab open that is playing a youtube music clip, then my fps drops by like 60. While this is happening, I checked task manager and everything is absolutely normal. On the CoD process the CPU number changes between 10 and 25, with the usage not going any higher than 50% on CPU performance moniter. My RAM while this is happening is also pretty normal, running at 2GB out of the 4GB I have. My components should be easily able to handle this game with many other applications at the same time with no drama. Does this evidence favor a PSU problem?

Thanks,

GrincheyAny ideas on that evidence? Thanks,

Grinchey

Sorry for the delay in posting.

Youtube is based on FLASH, and Flash is known to be CPU-intensive... I doubt it might be a CPU issue but still.... I think its more likely to be the Graphics card, though.

Up till here we haven't tried resetting the BIOS, have we?
Try resetting your CMOS and see what happens.
Are you overclocking?I haven't tried resetting it, and no I have not touched the system since I INSTALLED the new parts. I will do that in a bit, thanks for that.

Thanks.Tried resetting the CMOS by taking it out and putting it back in. Still the same problem.

Thanks,

GrincheyThe motherboard/power supply looks like the culprit here... if the CPU never tops 50% usage and the GPU has problems running 3DMark Vantage... it sounds like the motherboard is faulty.

It would really HELP if you could take the CPU out, put it into another PC, and run IntelBurnTest on it for half an hour to stress-test it for faults. You might want to do that with the GPU too-run Furmark on it for half an hour.

However, before we do all this, it might be something as trifling as the RAM causing the issue. try booting with only one stick of RAM plugged in.As I have no other computer that would support the CPU I am currently using (Intel Core i5 [emailprotected]), I will go ahead and try using 1 stick of RAM.

Thanks transfusion for your dedication

So, here are some questions for you jason:
So, what do you advise I do? Is it OK to run 3 sticks in the DIMM 0 slots? (LEAVING the DIMM 1 unfilled)
I originally went to a lot more memory that the stock machine had because some prog. were a little slow.

Solve : Laptop Freeze when reading from external USB devices?

Answer»

Hi All

Problem: LAPTOP locks up completely (only way to get out is manual kill) when reading from external usb devices.

PC: Dell Studio 1537, Core 2 Duo P8600(2.4GHz), 4Gb ddr2 ram, 500gb Samsung ATA HDD, ATI Radeon HD 3400 graphics.

Running beta version of Windows 7, however also dual boot vista and have had same problems on vista.

Prime example is when copying from external 2.5" hdd or even when watching videos from the external. It doesnt always crash, small files will normally copy ok but if the file is large will most likely crash. Not a rule though, sometimes will crash copying small files.

Have also had FREEZE from trying to scanning something (usb multifunction printer).

My Flashdrive also fails sometimes, as in i might be running a power point file from the flash drive and all of a sudden the program will be 'not responding' and the flash drive BECOMES inoperable. Only way i can get flashdrive to work again is via rebooting and then its fine.

I do not have problems writing to usb hdd, only on reading

I cannot figure out whether this is a hardware or DRIVER problem. If i boot in safe mode i can copy as much as i want from external hdd no worries, has never crashed. Tried safe mode 'with networking' once and crashed.

So far ive speculated / researched the following possibilities, but am not sure what the true problems is:
USB hardware or driver (driver is most up to date)
Internal HDD fault
Dell DPC LATENCY (read a couple of articles on this, not quite sure about it but figures with the safemode v safe mode with networking issue)

Anyway as you can imagine it does get pretty frustrating having to copy things from my external via safe mode. If anybody out there has any ideas on the problem or what like some more information i would be very grateful.

Cheers

the timings are in nanoseconds; the DIFFERENCE is VIRTUALLY unnoticeable. But why would I buy such RAM when I can overclock my generic Kingston RAM to 1600 MHz at 9-9-9-24?Also the frequency in MHz has an influence on RAM performance.

Solve : Why won't my laptop support the native resolution of my ext. monitor??

Answer»

I have an HP S2031 connected to a Medion Akoya 96980 laptop ( Windows Vista)as an EXTERNAL monitor. The video adapter is an ATI Raedon X1270 and I'm trying to use either the Windows display properties or the ATI Catalyst Control Center to change the screen resolution to 1600 x 900, which is the native resolution of my 20" monitor. Neither gives me that option - the nearest offered is 1200 x 1600. At ONE time I was able to get the CORRECT resolution, but after rebooting the computer the video would default to a lower, squashed-looking resolution. I've installed the latest drivers and software from ATI, which I suspect were not the problem anyway, since the OLDER version of driver did briefly work allow me to obtain the correct setting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. The Radeon X1270 is equal to the desktop HD 3400, which will definitely struggle at widescreen/HD resolutions, so that's probably why such a resolution was not included by default.

There should be SOMETHING along the lines of "add unsupported resolution" in AMD/ATI catalyst.

At the small business I work for on the SIDE,they purchased a new Dell computer with Win 7 installed and also purchased a Western Digital USB hard drive for backup transfers etc.The old Gateway computer(probably purchased in the late 1990's)has Windows 98 installed.(It took a while before we remembered that one computer has FAT32 file system, and the other NTFS).The old computer has a few (8 or 9 )spreadsheet/list type files that we wish to keep. When we plugged the external Hard drive into the USB ports it did not recognize the drive. It won't recognize USB anything-thumb drive, stick etc.

Is it worth trying to get the USB to recognize the drive so we can attempt to copy the info over? How much of a problem is the two different file systems? It doesn't seem that the USB is turned on -is it wort trying to turn it on and find /upgrade drivers? The old machine was used as a word processor and has never been used on line at all.It also has an antique copy of Word where the spreadsheets are located.

The biggest question of all, should we try any of this or are we down to copying these lists over by hand?It would take a long time, but it could be done.

Thanks so much.Welcome to the CH forums. Many computers with win 98 have a problem reading flash drives on a win 98 operating system. I have one that will read them but i have to follow a protocol to do so (i cannot just insert it into a USB port and use it). However it occurs to me that you should be able to transfer the files to a cd disc via a cd burner and then read/transfer them to your newer computer. From a recent question i asked re the file system (fat32/NTSF) compatibility i was informed that NTSF can read Fat32 but not the other way around. So you shouldn't have an ISSUE there. truenorthQuote from: truenorth on August 12, 2011, 12:03:22 PM

From a recent question i asked re the file system (fat32/NTSF) compatibility i was informed that NTSF can read Fat32 but not the other way around.

You were advised of nonsense, as I noted in that thread, but with no reply from the "adviser". File systems do not read file systems. Computers read file systems. You can have a mixture of FAT and NTFS file systems on a computer. You can copy or move files freely between them, in either direction with one major restriction: the largest file size possible on FAT32 is 4 GB (one byte less, to be pedantic) so any operation which attempts to place a larger file on a FAT32 filesystem will fail.
Also, Windows 9x family (95, 98, 98SE, ME) operating systems do not natively read NTFS volumes, (and cannot boot from them) but they can be made to see and use NTFS volumes by installing third party drivers. Likewise, there are some generic Windows 98 USB mass storage device drivers available that work with most external drives.

ST, Thank you for the reminder i do remember your comments re what you have just said.To the o/p you can disregard my references to ANY issue re the different file systems compatibility. I haven't used the win98 computer in quite a while (but it is still available) but again due to ST's COMMENT here i do remember that i did have to install some device drivers before i could use the flash drive and it also seems that i need to something else in the insertion protocol for it to be recognized. Have you tried my suggestion re the burning of the files to a cd burnable disc? truenorth
P.S. Given that the fat32 files will be on the win98 computer there is no issue with that computer and NTSF filesA couple of ideas, perhaps get a usb to ide adapter and remove the drive from the gateway and then plug it into the usb on the Dell. Perhaps network the 2 computers. If the files are small and the gateway has email just email them and receive them on the dell. Or if the gateway has a cd writer write the files to cd.

Just some thoughts
Yet another idea. Windows 98 recognized a number of generic Ethernet cards. Install one and set up a connection between the computers.Generic USB Mass storage drivers for Windows 98 and Windows 98SE:

I have it installed on my PENTIUM 133Mhz laptop, and it works well.Thank you all for the replies.as its the weekend,I won't be able to try anything until the start of the week.I will post back with the results. Thanks again.

Solve : graphics card causing crashes??

Good clarification there CC...BFG APPEARS to be an obscure card maker. Their website is blank. Get the drivers from nVidia.
They are on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BFG_Technologies
Graphics card business is in liquidation.Which means they probably never spent the money to write proper drivers for any OS out there...
I'd personally give up on that card if it were me...nVidia doesn't MAKE gfx cards themselves? what's with the nVidia logo on this graphics card...

i keep thinking of roald dahl when i think of bfg...So i think ultramon has totally effed my computer in the a. I am continually getting the bluescreen now. Before i installed ultramon this time, i made a system restore of everything before i went ahead with it considering last time i ran it i suspect it was ultramon interfering with my graphics card that caused the crash.
However now even WITH the system restores, i am continually getting the blue screen despite having gotten rid of ultramon. should i start with the nvidia drivers, perhaps going to some older ones?Quote from: kamikaze33 on July 28, 2011, 05:14:46 PM

Yes.Plzz Check thatt your Fan iss WORKING ok orr not is it slow orr stopss afterr some time I did have same kind of PROBLEM but now after replacing fan I am able to CORRECT itchecked the fans, both the motherboard and graphics card ones are working fine. SuperDave has been trying to help me fix my computer in another thread, and we seem to be getting nowhere fast; we seem to have ascertained that the cause in my computer not booting is not spyware/malware. So i am coming back to tinkering with this now. I am trying the recommended 197.13 drivers from nvidia. I have been running my computer in safemode for about a week, ill see what happens once i have installed these drivers. New AGP cards are just not well supported since computers no longer use this interface.i get this error:

Just tried to run my computer in nonsafemode, tried to update the drivers normally and THAT update failed too... should i be posting this perhaps in another forum?Quote from: patio on July 26, 2011, 12:57:55 PM

PSU=Power Supply Unit
Are you trying to connect to a laptop or desktop? You have no place to plug it into on a laptop.

This one has it's own power supply:

yup im plugging it into my laptop. ill GET the one with the power supply. cheersFor data recovery you WOULD be better served to grab the one i showed and plug it into a working desktop machine with a burner...He doesn't have a desktop, but has a NEW laptop with the hard drive from the old laptop. No burner is necessary, just copy the files from the old hard drive to the new laptop.OK...if you insist.

Solve : modem from V.90 to V.92 very puzzled question ????

Answer»

Ok,

I have been asking questions about this matter even ask a computer tech in my area and nothing has worked. I'll try again or just give up! I have a computer thats says windows2003 home and I have been
trying to get a answering service to work on dailup for now 3wks and my concern is I am on the computer all day , and i don't no who is even calling me on my phone, so i need a answering service , but all the answering

services are compatible with a V.92 voice modem and i have a US ROBOTICS 56K V.90 VOICE HOST INT...
and If i knew this is what came with this computer scince its been so hard to upgrade to a V.92 i would have
never bought this mess! Anyways I had a old gateway computer not working so I took the modem out of the
gateway and put in which is a BCM V.92 56K Modem, so i thought this would solve my problem but NOT !

The answering service has a area to let you run a test to see what modem your computer is runniing and I did a test (Now its showing I am using a BCM V.90 56K modem / but this modem I put in computer is a
BCM 56K V.92 modem, so the tech guy gave me a CD to install the drivers he said i will have to do so I did so,
and it still shows i am using a BCM 56K V.90 MODEM....? MY QUESTION IS WHY? after installing a V.92 modem

my computer still shows i am using a V.90 MODEM..? No one yet can solve this...HELP!

jerry222Did you EVER uninstall the v90 modem? Both hardware and software. It MAY also be possible that your software for the V92 is NOT the correct one. You may be able to find proper drivers on the web (however dial up modems are getting harder to find nowadays). US robotics is an excellent make if you can find a v92 of that brand. many years ago to overcome your very same ISSUE i subscribed to a paid service that provided software that once installed did many THINGS re incoming calls when your line was being used by the computer. IE; answer the call, record a message, display the number calling (if not blocked).have your own recorded voice message, etc. I don't know if such a service is still available. You COULD search for that on-line. My 1st choice would be to try and find either an internal (cheaper) or an external U.S. Robotics v92 56k modem. Or do as we did and bug the H out of your telephone provider to make DSL service available until they give in (took us about 5-10 years).truenorthI want to say thanks for a reply to my question, but NO i did not un-install the V.90 ROBOTICS, i just took out the V.90 ROBOTICS and replace it with a GATEWAY V.92 modem and then I was given a CD to install the proper drivers and , but my system still shows i am using now a BCM V.90 56K modem , but I replaced it with

a BCM V.92 56K modem out of a gateway....? Maybe the un-install is what i should have done , somethings
telling me the 56K V.92 I put in is not taking because the V.90 has yet to be un-installed but how do i un-install the ROBOTICS V.90 version.......is the big question now, then after i un-install the ROBOTICS V.90...THEN i WILL go and re-install the V.92 again does this makes sense.... thanks for a reply very much. You will need to go into add/remove programs to remove any remaining software for the V90 then you will need to go into device manager and locate the v90 modem and delete it. If you need assistance on how to access the device manager just ask and it shall be forthcoming. While your there see if the other v92 modem is listed. If not after you have deleted/uninstalled (remember to also physically remove the modem card from the computer) then you may need to physically remove and reinstall the v92. Then you may get a prompt to say new hardware found. Or you may have to go to my computer and install it (software) from the "hardware" icon. Anyway start the process and if you run into problems post back and hopefully we can assist you.truenorth

Solve : stangest thing!!!!?

Answer»

This is a real long shot, but when you took the computer into the stores did you take everything including the keyboard, mouse and monitor? Was there anything different hooked up when you were in the shop? You don't need a hard drive at all to see anything on the monitor. You would see the "hardware startup screen" called the BIOS. You would see the name of the computer if it were a name brand, i.e. Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.
Some computers have only one light at the power button, but that does indicate it is getting some power, i.e. +5VDC. Therefore, "hydro" is OK.

There's a bunch of fans & a hard drive, none of them spin or make any noise?
What is the make and model of the offending computer?

No disrespect, but I have the feeling you're missing something, I just can't figure out what. It's hard to believe it works at the store but not at your home. Something's gotta be different. You may have to open it up and look for a loose connection. It could be that the power button itself is almost broken and the techs at the shop got lucky. The power button is a momentary close and can be done manually by momentarily shorting the two wires together.
This is similar to my recent problem--my power supply went bad--the fans would power up--motherboard lights etc etc--but i kept getting "no input signal" from the monitor. Some tech guys told me when a power supply goes bad--thats it, its dead and no power or very very low power would be detected.. They were wrong. Especially with these new power supplies that have several internal power cord slots--one port can go bad and the others work etc etc--it can drive you mad trying to diagnose.

A word of warning--my power supply ended up frying my motherboard/proc/ and POSSIBLY my hard drive. It was a nightmare sorting everything out and finally tracking down the CAUSE. If you have an extra power supply laying around--swap into your system and see if that works. I am not sure on how to actually test a powersupply and see if it is putting out proper current from all the ports etc.

A possibility is that maybe--maybe while moving it around there is a short in the powersupply and thats why it doesnt/hasnt worked at home. I hope you find an answer soon, I know it can be very frustrating trying to track a problem like this down--never give up!Check the settings on the monitor. Check the cords.
I have a monitor that I sometimes have to turn on and off a couple of times before it finds the sync from the video card. And make sure the video card is fully seated. With power off!The monitor only shows no signal because the computer is not booting up!!
Today i replaced what i believe is called the BIOS battery-small watch sized battery- turned the computer on and it powered up!! So monitor, keyboard, mouse everything worked fine- went through some programs and everything worked!! Shut the computer down to put everything back together and when i went to restart it- same problem!! would not boot up-no lights or monitor connection!!
My next step is to replace the power supply in the computer. Question- the Bios battery-is it like a fuse that would have blown or should it still be OK? My thinking is it should be OK. Any other thoughts???Well, just for the heck of it you should probably try the system at someone else's house just to see..........Now this is interesting. You replaced the BIOS battery and it RESTARTED and functioned 1 time? When you remove this battery it resets the BIOS to default conditions. When it starts up the 1st time, it looks for RAM, drives, etc and stores this info in the BIOS CMOS. No, this battery is not like a fuse.

It's possible that some bad component is preventing the computer from starting. Remove any add-in cards and the data & power cables from the hard drive, CD-ROM, etc, so the BIOS won't see them. Remove all RAM except for 1, some mobos won't do anything without some RAM. Then see if you can just get to the BIOS (setup) screen more than once. This will prove it's not the motherboard. Then, by deduction, the culprit is one of the devices you removed. Start plugging them back in, one at a time, until it fails, and you've found the bad one.

BTW, you can check the BIOS (CMOS) battery with a voltmeter. It's probably a CR-2032 and is 3.0VDC. I suspect the old one is just fine.

thanks for some ideas commando!! I'll give them a try sometime and let u know!! I'm not giving up just yet!!!A few years ago, I was given a computer that did the same sort of thing. Sometimes it would turn on and sometimes it wouldn't. I was working on it one day, turned it on and there was a blinding flash. Turned out to be an intermittent short on a high output audio card. It was then easy to find because of the smell and the burn marks on the card. Removed the card and never had a problem again.

If there is a short somewhere, the power supply will protect itself by not turning on or turning off immediately. I suspect you have an intermittent shorted +12V component, which are drives, fans and some motherboard stuff.Ok so i unplugged everything i could. Plugged in cd driver and started it up and all was fine. Shut it down and unplugged cd driver and plugged in CD writer- started it up and all was fine. Shut it down and plugged in both and the computer wouldn't start-just got no signal sign on monitor.
So... should i assume that the power supply is weak and not putting out enough power to start everything up??? If so, is it difficult to change the power supply. I would like to try myself. Now that i've gone this far i'm finding it kind of fun to play around inside the computer!!!Quote from: mustanger on October 05, 2009, 02:34:41 PM

Borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in ther overnite...
You will soon know if that's the issue or not...

PS. Glad yer havin fun inside the case...remeber to remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions....That seems kind of odd because it all worked in the shop. It is indicating a weak PSU, however more testing is in order. Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage at the receptacle. I know you're in BC, but all NORTH AMERICA is the same. Should be 120VAC +/- 5V. If it's below 115, you may have a pole transformer problem. Most of the PSU's have a very wide input range, but if you're a little low compared to the shop, that may be just enough to account for the difference.

While you're at it, you can easily measure the output voltage of the PSU while it is under load. Plug in the 2 offfending CD's adn attempt to power it on while watching the meter. Measure between yellow and black on the power plug. It should be +12VDC. Between red and black is +5VDC.

Solve : Is 1680x1050 a significantly sharper resolution than 1600x900??

Answer»

Thinking of buying a new widescreen LCD monitor - wondering if anyone has an opinion as to whether the 50 to 150 extra pixels of RESOLUTION in a 1680 x 1050 make any real difference in the sharpness of your images, as opposed to a 1600 x 900 screen. 1600 x 900 is the native resolution of the 20" HP S2031 I've been using, and it's quite satisfactory. Still, now that I need ANOTHER one, I'm looking at various options like a 20" Dell 2009W with 1680 x 1050 resolution. All other things being equal, is there a noticeable difference between the two resolutions? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter.I would look at them in person...i doubt the difference is noticeable...1680 x 1050 will, of course, give you a little more space for having multiple windows open at the same time and dividing your screen AMONG them. For example, if you want to have a browser window open and also have an email client or word processing window displayed on your screen at the same time, you'll be able to keep a little more of them in view than will the 1600 x 900 screen. But, on the other hand, text will look a bit smaller with the 1680 x 1050 resolution. Ask you eyes what they think about this. sharpness has nothing to do with resolution, and everything to do with Dot Pitch. How come better screen resolution makes more space on a screen I'd have find out yet...hmmmmmQuote from: Broni on August 12, 2011, 08:50:12 PM

How come better screen resolution makes more space on a screen I'd have find out yet...hmmmmm

It's quite simple really. If you have a screen which is 500 x 500 pixels, then an application window which is 500 x 500 pixels will take up 100% of the screen area. If you have a screen which is 1000 x 1000 pixels, then that same window would occupy 25% of the screen area. Of course, if the monitor screens were the same size physically then that window would look a lot smaller on the higher resolution monitor but that's a different issue.
Hmmm...Maybe I need another coffee since it doesn't make sense to me...Quote from: Broni on August 13, 2011, 09:27:00 AM
Hmmm...Maybe I need another coffee since it doesn't make sense to me...

it doesn't make more physical space, obviously, but it means that the pixels are smaller and therefore more pixels will fit on the screen and therefore most screen elements will be "smaller" and thus give you more screen real estate.

A larger (physically) screen won't give you more screen real-estate- unless you use a different resolution. regardless of the size of the monitor, for example, 640x480 will always be 640 horizontal pixels by 480 vertical pixels; the only thing a large screen will do to that is make the pixels physically larger.I was ready to post and saw the notice that someone else had just posted. BC_Programmer said basically what I had typed but I'll go ahead and post. Here's what I had typed:

Hmmm...Maybe I need another coffee since it doesn't make sense to me...
Let's assume you're working with a spreadsheet file and you keep your spreadsheet window maximized. For any given size monitor, you'll see more of your spreadsheet, i.e. more columns and rows, with a higher resolution setting than a lower setting. Let's assume a 17" monitor. A resolution of 1024 x 768 will result in more of your spreadsheet file being visible on screen than a resolution of 800 x 600. That's what I meant by creating more space. Perhaps space is not the best choice of terms but I don't how else to make it more clear.

You can't expect much performance from onboard video. Be glad you have something that is upgradeable.

You might want to check the BIOS to be sure you can select the PCIe-x16 as the 1st graphics adapter and turn the onboard video off. Look for something called Init Display First under PnP/PCI Configurations.Hey thanks.. Yeah, I can disable the card. I'm looking into getting a graphics card now. I am pretty sure the PCI e x16 is going to be the best bet, but I can also fit a PCI in there.ya... don't use a PCI graphics card unless you HAVE to. Bottom ranked card.

PCI < AGP < PCIeISA 8-bit < ISA 16-bit < VL-Bus < PCI < AGP < PCI-X < PCI-E

Some PEOPLE consider VL-Bus better then PCI.

Solve : Hard disc disappears??

Answer»

I recently added a new hard disc to my pc. Old one is 500G and new one is 1 Terrabyte. If i open the device menu, it shows the new device, but after a while it disappears from the menu. I had a 2nd opinion about the installation and that is not the problem. Any help? When you say "device menu" are you talking about device manager? Does the drive show up in Windows Explorer? How about in disc MANAGEMENT? Did you format the drive? If you click on start and then devices and printers, under devices it shows and then goes away, it does return but not for long before it disappears again. I am not sure what windows explores is. Also if i click the `my computer` icon it shows the old HD and the DVD rom, and the new HD does the same there, APPEARING and disappearing. When i installed the device windows asked me to format the drive before i could USE it, which i did.Why are you even looking in Devices and Printers?

Windows Explorer is the file manager. Go to START - RUN and type explorer.exe then press ENTER. Do you SEE the new drive? If so, you're fine. If not, go to START - RUN and type diskmgmt.msc and press ENTER. Do you see the drive there? If so, what does it say?
