Solve : defragging the hdd?

Answer»

Okay I've defragged my BROTHER's hdd lastnight and just now and I analyzed it again and it still says that I need to defrag it should I back up his data or defrag it againBacking up anything important should have happened BEFORE making any changes to the drive (like defragmentation).okay I have another question the hdd seems to labor alot when load programs or EVEN surfing the net. my brother only has 128mb of ram in his computerOk, THINK I better ask for this...

Need the full specs of the system, including the Windows version and all hardware (especially drives, sizes of the drives, and partitions)dell 2300 1.8gig cpu 40gig hdd and 128mb of ramQuote from: quaxo on April 27, 2008, 10:27:28 AM

it's windows xp sp 2 2002sorry win xp home sp2 2002Ok, after backing up anything important, give it another shot.128MB of RAM for XP is ridiculous number. He needs more RAM, 512MB, or preferably, 1GB.
How much of that 40GB hard drive is free space?I know. the hdd has 21 gigs left or 56% leftHe still has insufficient RAM problem.

As for defrag, try what I use: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/that's what I thought too he was asking why the hdd was working so hard and I told him that he needed memory. I also cleaned up internet files got rid of spyware and cookies and like I SAID I defragged his hdd 3 times still pretty much the same result fragments everywhere.Quote

With the price of RAM where it is right now there's no excuse not to throw another 512M stick in there...both the machine and your Brother will be much happier...

Solve : I have a USB Virus (I think) that prevents me from seeing my files...?

Answer»

I have a 5 GB USB Drive. When I try to get my files on it there isn't anything there... Yet, I check the properties and it says that I am using 4.1GB -- so I know my files are still on there. I've clicked the hidden files option to show them and there's none there.

When I plug the drive into my PS3 it doesn't show any files either. That's why I think it's a virus on my USB drive.

-- To summarize --

- USB drive doesn't show files, but file properties say I am using 4.1 GB (I only have one folder and TXT document on there.. the folder is supposed to have the video files in there)

- My PS3 doesn't recognize the files either, which leads me to believe that it has to do with the USB drive.

Preferably, I'd like to get my files back. I'd like to leave format as a last resort.

Thanks in advance,

-dan What is the "make", "model number", and advertised size of the USB drive? I've seen 1, 2, 4, and 8 GB USB drives (flash/thumb), but never a 5 GB drive.

What is the operating system and service pack level of the computer you're trying to read it from? Have you successfully accessed those files from this computer before?

Do you know if the USB drive contains more than one logical volume (two or more drive letters assigned)?

Do you know which file system it uses (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, something else)? What operating system was the last one to successfully access those (missing) files?Quote from: dahlarbear on April 25, 2008, 02:15:12 AM

Make: Seagate
Model Number: ST650211USB
Advertised Size: 5GB -- It's actually 4.65GB, but advertised as 5.
--
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Have I accessed the files before?
Yes. I checked them on my computer and then my brother watched one of the files on my Playstation 3. When I came in today I pulled the USB out of my PS3 and put it in my computer (wanted to add something to it) and it wasn't showing anything.
--
Does it CONTAIN more than one logical drive? No, I don't think so.
File System: FAT32
Last Accessed: I used it on my computer (WINXP SP2) and at school (MAC OS10 -- I think. It's the newer Mac's)

An update: Since I posted I downloaded a program called GetDataBack. I did a scan of the drive and it found the files for. I still can't see them on my drive, though. I had to find a full version of the program to copy the files. After I copy them over, I'll just format the drive and see if that works or not.

Thanks for the response and help.

Some flash drives have a micro-switch on them for security...is it one of those ? ?
Also how is the drive being reported in Disk Management ? ?
Iy may have been unplugged prematurely in this case it will say RAW.Quote from: imthedan on April 25, 2008, 02:40:00 AM

I understand you want to copy the files from the USB drive by using some kind of recovery program (GetDataBack). A sound decision.

After you're done with the recovery effort and before you re-format the USB drive could you see if Windows XP can fix the file system on that drive. From My_Computer or Windows_Explorer right click on the drive letter assigned to the USB disk and select "Properties". Select the "Tools" tab, then "Check Now" in the "Errorchecking" subsection. Check the first option "Automatically fix file system errors" to check/fix the integrity of the FAT32 file system. The second option "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" will check the integrity of the disk surface (and will take longer). Select start. Can you see and access the files now?

Were you writing files to the USB drive from the MAC OS or just reading them?I did the ERROR Checking thing and it didn't find any problems.

I put the files on the drive at school (on the Mac) -- I checked them there and they worked. I brought it home and watched a file on the drive itself on my playstation. When I stuck it into my PC it stopped working.

Anyway, I got the files off and formatted the drive. I put some files back on and it seems to be working now. Might have hit a glitch or something, I don't know.

Thanks for the help guys.MAC files will not be read by Windows and visa versa without additional software...

Yeah, this is generally true as long as you're using a file system both computers can read on the device.Regarding your original problem, I'm curious as to whether you added "MAC" files to an existing Windows file system on the USB drive; or erased and reformatted on a MAC operating system before adding "MAC" files.

Apparently if the USB drive is formatted on MAC prior to transferring files to Windows operating system, the "MS-DOS File System" format should be used. My source for this is Setting up and using an external USB Flash Drive on your MAC.

Yes, I realize you weren't using a "Flash Drive"; but I believe the information still applies.
Mac OS X can read from a FAT file system, which is what you should format that drive as either from a Mac (as dahlarbear explained) or from a Windows system.

Hi everyone I've an Epson Stylus Photo RX420. and hoping somebody can help with my problem. Basically when ever I want to print a photo I USUALLY have to clean the heads - thing is everytime I do this it drains the cartridges - I've have just now drained a new set of cartridges until the heads were finally clean - I now cant print the photo cause I havent any ink left! Any solutions anyone? THANKS ZippyNO NO NO What you have to do is find someone who can take it apart cause the print heads get cloged an then this happens. Its know to happen to all epsons printers. Cheaper to get another one. Thanks Squall, I did have the same problem with my old epson back along so guess it was NORMAL but I did figure something must be wrong after loosing all that ink today. Any suggestion as to what I should get - recommendations anyone??? Thanks ZippyQuote from: squall_01 on April 27, 2008, 11:06:57 AM

NO NO NO What you have to do is find someone who can take it apart cause the print heads get cloged an then this happens. Its know to happen to all epsons printers. Cheaper to get another one.

Your source for that information?

I had an Epson for years and never had that happen. Gave that one to my mother and BOUGHT a Canon Pixma iP3300. She still uses it and hasn't had an issue with cleaning the heads.I had two Epsons, and always happy with it.
It may be some bad batch of cartridges.I got a c66 an c82 an they both wont print cause there cloged, I talk from self experince. The one was my sisters that she never really USED the other was one of my dads boss's brothers.

Solve : Help! Confusing computer troubles :(?

Answer»

I left my computer on all night and in the MORNING it was off. When I turned it back on the tower itself was on and RUNNING but the monitor/keyboard/mouse were not on. I switched those parts ( monitor/keyboard) with a different computer's and still nothing. I thought that it might be a power supply issue but when I replaced the power supply still did the same thing. So I assumed it might be a motherboard problem. My dad ( who is much better with computers than I am ) took out my hard drive and power supply and put it into a completely different computer and it powered up several times and actually worked but that was with a different set of monitor/keyboard/mouse and STUFF. He mentioned something about having two hard drives now and setting my old one as the slave...whatever that means hope it helps. So I figured that was the end of my problems.

On a side note, he lives 4 hours away so it was not a cheap trip to get my computer "fixed" and I won't be able to make that trip again so I have to figure this out on my own. =/

Once I got home I booted it up it asked me something about restoring to DEFAULT settings so I hit F2 to approve it and then I was able to get into Windows. A few minutes later I got the blue screen of death giving me an error and I had to turn off the computer. And now I am back where I started. My tower sounds like it is on and running but nothing else works not even the cd.

I'm sorry I don't have a lot of specific information like what kind of hard drive/power supply and all that stuff I'm not a computer guru I just play games on them I'll stop rambling and I really hope this is just a simple fix

Thanks in advance!
did you get a new motherboard for your computer?

Quote

He mentioned something about having two hard drives now and setting my old one as the slave

did he install windows on the new harddrive? was this harddrive BRAND new or was it out of another computer?

The mother board was new for my hard drive but not new in general it had worked in the previous computer just fine. The other hard drive wasn't new either it was my mom's old computer she upgraded I guess...anyways it had windows on it and I do not remember him having to reinstall Windows at all. Hope this helps! you will need to reinstall windows on your new harddrive for it to function correctly. windows binds itself to the motherboard so you cannot simply pop a master harddrive out of one computer and pop it in another computer (as the master) and hope it works.Have you tried booting into safe mode?

I would suggest finding or downloading and burning a copy of a live CD Linux distro like Knoppix (search distro watch) and boot from the CD drive. It does not even need a hard drive to run and if it does with no errors then it would appear to be a software issue.

You may have a bad memory module. Make sure they are seated securely.Quote from: daniel1212 on April 25, 2008, 02:52:58 PM

thank you for the input daniel, but lets not confuse the OP. one thing at a time. if reinstalling XP doesnt work, we can delve further into details.I second Homer on this. Reinstall XP.

You're actually lucky to be able to get into Windows XP at all after changing the motherboard.

Solve : monitor switches on and off by itself?

Answer»

halo...

i have a strange problem with my monitor: when im on my pc, it occassionally starts to switch itself on and off rapidly (about 1 on-off per SECOND, sometimes at constant intervals). it doesnt stop until i turn it off, wait a minute and turn it on again. then i go back to whatever i did before, and after 10-15 minutes it starts turning itself on/off again, and so on...

the weird thing is that it only happens when im here, doing stuff... when im away or asleep it seems to be ok (the noise it makes would certainly wake me up if it ever happened at night...)

i tried to use a new power cable and it didnt help...
any ideas...?PLEASE post the hardware and software specs of your machine.

What version windows are you running?
What kind of monitor is it? Is it an LCD or CRT (flat PANEL or big monster)? How old is it?
It might just be getting too old and worn out.sorry...

i have a pentium 2, 350 mhz, 64mb ram
the monitor is philips 107mb (not lcd)
im running windows 98, first editionIt sounds like it's just an old monitor trying to give up the ghost.
Time to upgrade!
I guess you could try unplugging it for a couple days and see if it clears up any....I had an old CRT monitor that did this exact same thing. Had a capacitor changed in it and it worked great for another year before just dying completely.

Finding someone who is willing to do this isn't easy though. Depending on where you live, it might not be cheap either. You might just be better off getting a new monitor. You could try local electronics repair shops and see if they're willing to TAKE a look at it and see what it might cost.

(I live in Asia. An electronics repair shop down the street fixed it for me for $10.)

Solve : 220V to 110V Laptop battery?

Answer»

Hey,
I have some vistors from overseas who happend to bring a laptop with them but forgot to buy an adapter for their electronics since where they come from they use 220V while where I live it is 110V. However their laptop is exactly the same as mine (with the exception of theirs running on 220V), and I looked at the BATTERIES of both laptops and I dont see a difference. Infact i am able to plug in the battery of 1 of the laptops into the other (i didnt turn the power on). so My question is Can I charge their battery on MY laptop? or can I use my battery on their laptop. it is somewhat urgent and we need to get some files from their laptop

Also if I do have to buy a VOLTAGE CONVERTER, which one do I need to buy to be able to charge thier laptop's battery (is 2000 W sufficient?)

Thanksi believe the only difference between the two computers is the size of the transformer in the charger itself. if they brought their charger, compare its output to yours (the chargers should clearly say the output voltage (V, VDC, or Volts), output AMPERAGE(A or Amps), output frequency (Hz), and/or output wattage(W or Watts)). if the outputs match EXACTLY, then you can use your charger in their comp.

Quote

Also if I do have to buy a VOLTAGE CONVERTER, which one do I need to buy to be able to charge thier laptop's battery (is 2000 W sufficient?)

if the outputs of the chargers do not match and you have to buy a converter, then read the input of the 220V charger. it should say how many amps it consumes. multiply the number of amps the charger consumes with the voltage to get the wattage.

example:lets say your charger consumes 5Amps @ 120V (i dont know where you live but in north america 120V is the standard voltage)

P=I*V
P=5*120
P=600W

in this case the 2000W converter will be more then enough. There may be an even more simple solution to this. Check their power SUPPLY. Most modern laptop power supplies (adapters) are designed to take any input (100-220v) and cut it down to what the laptop needs. To be sure, check on their power supply and see that it LISTS it accepts that voltage range. In the U.S., the NORMAL home power outlet is 60Hz and Europe is 50Hz (or vice versa, I can't remember, either way you're safe as long as the adapter says 50Hz-60Hz as most do anymore).

As long as their power supply meets that criteria, you should be able to plug it in with their adapter and it will work just fine.

If the adapter does NOT include 110-115 in its voltage range OR the frequency does NOT include 50Hz-60Hz in its power range, DO NOT attempt to plug it in or you risk damaging the power supply or even the computer.his friends are from overseas and their charger is 220V, chances are the plug type is different.Quote from: homer on April 24, 2008, 05:04:19 PM

Universal plug adapter. Available at Radio Shack for $9.99.Just wanted to say that actually I ended up saving 10 bucks .. Since i had the same exact plug that goes from the laptop to the adapter , i just swiched the part of the cable that goes into the walljack from his socket type to mine..and it worked perfectly. the adapter that comes with the laptop did its job and the laptop worked. Nicely advised, Quaxo and Homer, but I especially compliment Homer on the breakdown of his advice.Quote from: Quakky on April 27, 2008, 01:38:42 PM

Oh, excellent. I thought it would work. I haven't seen a laptop in a long time that doesn't take any power input. Glad you got that sorted out.

Solve : DVD/ CD DRIVER NOT WORKING?

Answer»

I have a Gateway computer and my dvd/ CD driver has quit working. It worked FINE until a few days ago. When I go to device manager I have an explanation point by my driver with this message "windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware (code 37)." I have tried uninstalling but nothing changes and message is the same. I also tried a system RESTORE on two different dates prior to the incident and each time afterward, it says that the system restore failed and was unable to complete the restore. Any suggestions? Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" SIGN next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Thank you very, very much!!! I followed the instructions on the first link you gave me and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much for your help! You're very welcome

Solve : lcd monitor power supply?

Answer»

Can you use any AC adapter for an lcd monitor? I bought a monitor and it was tested before shipped and they said worked fine. However I did not know it did not come with the power supply. And it does not take the regular 3 prong supply, so I tried to hook it up with a regular 12v adapter, and it powers on, then the screen comes on for about 3 seconds, and then goes blank. But the power light stays green and on?
It is a Viewsonic lcd monitor.
The 12v adapter has the following specs:
Input: AC 120v~60Hz 7.5W
Output: DC 12V
Current: 300mA

And I noticed on the ones I was going to order that say they work with the viewsonic it says

Output: DC 12v-5A

So is it the wrong ac adapter, or a bad monitor. Thanks in advance.Quote

Quote
Output: DC 12v-5A

thats the problem. 300mA is a far cry from 5A. your monitor is not being supplied with enough amperage, assuming the figures you gave are correct.Actually, 300 ma is LESS than 1 amp. As far as matching your needs, just remember Voltage has to be an exact match. A 12V DC device needs a 12V DC adapter. And for Amperage (the amount of power your device uses) the adapter you order has to give AT LEAST the amount of Amps your device draws. If your device states it is 12V 1A, (or any number below 1A, like the ma's (think MG to GB) a 1A adapter or higher can handle that load. The higher amperage (amp) power supply will not have to work as hard to handle a smaller load, and will run cooler and more stable.

Luck to you.Meemasaurusrex

while this may be true for a lab-quality power supply,
it isn't for the run-of-the-mill power adapters everone buys,

if the power supply isn't RATED AT what is going to be used,
say 12V 1000 mA[12V 1A] WITH 1 amp LOAD = 12V @ 1A,
however, less 'load' than that and the voltage begins to spike,

if justh8me wants to use a 'generic' power supply,
and the numbers he gave, 12V 5A, are what is written on the monitor's sticker,
then that is EXACTLY what he needs to procure,

Solve : I can't get my Sharp AL-840 printer/copier to print?

Answer»

I recently BOUGHT a refurbished Sharp AL-840 printer/copier. After finally finding the RIGHT driver for my XP (the disk supplied didn't support XP) and installing it, I find I can't print from a document or the web. I had asked a tech advisor at another site and after SEVERAL attempts, he said that the problem was not a software issue nor a problem with my computer. He suggested I either get a new parallel cable or a new printer! I just bought this UNIT. I can't just ditch it and buy a new one. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I really need to be able to print soon or I'll have to use my typewriter! (Heaven FORBID!) Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Are all power leads hooked up properly ? ?
All fans spinning and OPERATIONAL ? ?

You haven't provided very many details for this little dilemna...I am very "Green" when it comes to computers so I apologize for not providing better information. Basically what I have done is change the CPU, the OLD CPU was getting hot and overheating. We decided to change the Motherboard, CPU, Fan and heat sink. I can get the computer to come on but only for a few seconds before it starts to make a siren sound. I INVESTIGATED this situation and discovered that maybe we had a overheating problem so CHECKED the fan and it is working and all connections are good on EVERYTHING. I removed the CPU and turned on the computer and the dang thing stays on, does not shut off but of course does nothing. Could I have a bad CPU? I also changed the RAM so that it would be new also.

Solve : Striker Extreme, fan problem.?

Answer»

Hello, I am currently building a new Gaming PC, i GOT the Striker Extreme motherboard for my system.

The PROBLEM is, only 1 Fan socket on the motherboard works...

And i need it for the CPU fan, but its too far away, all of my case fans are connected to the PSU, but i don't really WANT to connect the CPU fan straight to the power supply in case of over powering it, since it is only small.

I need to get the CPU fan to run but when its in the CPU Fan socket near the CPU it just doesn't run...

I have not yet gotten a proper boot, with an image on the screen. But i need to get the CPU fan to run before i run my computer so i don't fry my CPU.

Any suggestions?return the board if its faulty. did you wire the board correctly?Quote from: homer on APRIL 26, 2008, 02:28:50 PM

yes it's all wired up and everything.

I dot'd know why it wont run the fan.....Does it need to go through the 30 second power on self tests (POST) when you first boot up?Follow Homer's advice...you risk burning up that CPU if you insist on fiddling with it to get it to work.

hello?Hi there,

PCI slots are all universal, anything PCI will work in a PCI slot

so any PCI gfx card will work fine

Kurtiswhich would be better?
GEFORCE FX 5500 256MB 128-bit or GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit

i just found a Radeon X1550 256MB 64-bit at new egg, would that be better then both of the others?hello?Pci cards are not KNOWN for performance so I don't think you will see much difference in any of those. If it was me, I would buy the cheapest one with decent reviews.Quote from: lattestone on April 26, 2008, 08:09:33 PM

Will DOS RUN on dual core processors? If so are there any cautions that need to be observed? Any comments?I have little if any experience with dos, but I don't think it will make any difference what processor is used. The processor SPEED MAY cause some problems with Dos based 16-bit programs. See here...

Solve : Cpu usage?

Answer»

I have been experiencing this problem lately, when I do anything on my computer and I check my cpu usage it is all over the board. At differnet time when I check my cpu percentage it is at 100% and stays there until I shut down the program and stop what I am doing. Rarely does it go to 100% but when It does it drives me CRAZY. When the cpu is at 100% it takes a while to even open a simple program. I am using WINDOWS xp home edition. What process under CPU column is the biggest taker?Firefox with 39,100 k. The problem is at various times the computer runs at 100 PERCENT or it cant not make its mind on a SPECIFIC percentage of cpu to use so it changes drastically from 100 to 50 to 20 to 60 in a way that doesnt make sense. Like there is a virus or something. Also the cpu graph sometimes for no reason is crazy like i said.Quote

Firefox with 39,100 k.
This doesn't matter. Look under CPU column.system idle process 99Then, it's perfectly normal. System Idle Process is a part of CPU, which is NOT in use.

Solve : HD detected by Linux but not Windows?

Answer»

Title is pretty much self-explanatory. I cannot see my hard DRIVE on Windows, but I can see it on Linux. I am running on Windows XP SP2, and the drive is a SATA 120gb drive. I have checked all the CONNECTORS already, and they are on in the correct place. Thanks for reading. If the drive has a Linux OS or it is partitioned for Linux i don't believe it will be visible to Windows. They are 2 different beasts.
But if you visit some Linux Forums i'll bet there are free tools that will accomplish this...Well I used to be able to see the drive on Windows, until I uninstalled Windows, INSTALLED Linux, uninstalled Linux, and finally reinstalled Windows.bumpI would start over...

Windows should go first.
Are these seperate physical drives or just 2 partitions ? ?
Remember you need to use the Linux tools to completely wipe the Linux partition properly.

p.s. What were you using for your bootloader ?I no longer have Linux. I currently have two drives. None are partitioned, and I'm pretty SURE both are Windows partitions. I think.Being vague with replies is getting us nowhere...
What do you have currently ??
What do you WANT to accomplish ? ?

You are bumping a thread that contains only conditions...not goals.Okay sorry. All I have right now are Windows XP, two hard drives, one with Windows, the other with movies and music. I would like to see the drive with my media. From above:

Solve : Computer is decent, but not working?

Answer»

I have a DECENT computer

Pentium 4 3.00 ghz CPU
Ati Radeon 9250 Video Card
512mb of Ram
160 GB of Hard Drive

I want to fix it up, and try to give it to my friend who has a CRAPPIER computer than this one here, its SO bad
u can't even play starcraft on it without lagging : (.

so ya.

Problems: Everytime I turn it on the windows screen NEVER comes on it just stays black for the whole time.
I've wanted to try system restore to try and fix it, but it still does not work because I can't even get to the freaking start screen.

Things I've TRIED: Changed HD, Changed Ram, Got a new moniter for it, and still nothing works, and its getting very hard for me to get it done by the end of this year, so please give me any advice, and I would gladly accept. If there is nothing on the screen and you've tried switching monitors then you should try switching the video card. Or, you can try taking the video card out, blowing out the slot, and re-seating the video card. Have you tried switching the cable that goes from the computer to the monitor?Tried Safe Mode?hey aziangamer i have some questions...

1. can your computer POST? by POSTing i mean, does it give you a beep at the start?

1a. if so, how MANY beeps?

2. does your BIOS start? can you see it loading up?

3. can you access your BIOS?

we have to zero in on the culprit. answering these questions will help us determine what is causing the problem.guys thanks for all the advice

Homer I really want to find out what you're talking about man but I'm only 14

However I want to try the video card idea I have had that

Also call me old school but MY FASTEST computer is 350Mhz and It runs fairly quick. Sure, it can't run the newest games, but I never said I wanted to. Besides, its for development!

video card and mobo are both possiblities, but not the CPU as of this point.quite some time ago I decided to fix up a 486 I had for my brother. I start it up, and no video. So I try removing EVERYTHING (except video card of course). still nothing. remove CPU. nothing (not surprised.) then, out of my infinite wisdom, I decide to try the CPU in a different orientation (where I contrived this idea I wish to know). Of course, I got something this time. SPARKS! YAY! and a little smoke from a little resistor next to the CPU socket. needless to say, I put it BACK in the original orientation and my problem was not fixed. In this case however it is quite sure to have been the Mobo in the first case, as I know the Video card was good (well actually looking back I don't know if it was good, I haven't tested it since then either, some crappy Cirrus Logic thing. The moral of the story? don't put CPU's in sideways.

alright, perhaps I BEST get back on track.... I've also had, strangely enough, this problem with a Sound Card. Turns out the BIOS couldn't resolve IRQ's for it or something silly like that and just hung. (I believe the Sound card required PCI 2.1 and the BIOS had PCI 2.0, however, so this is likely a redundant fact

Solve : I dont want to format! How can I save my data.?

Answer»

I built a home computer with 2 HDs a year ago and installed the OS, naturaly, on the C drive and used the second drive to store all my media, ie photos, video and music. When I upgraded to VISTA I found I couldnt access my second drive any longer. Instead, the computer requested that I format it in order to use it. I dont want to lose my data so I removed the drive and thought that I could access it by installing the drive in a portable USB case. The computer still asks me to format. When I check the properties, the file system is labeled as RAW (i'm not sure what that means). Is there a WAY to recover my very important data without wiping the drive?cant you put your stuff somewhere else for some while
format the second drive and then put it back?
or dont you have any space anywhere?I would, but I cannot access the drive using the Open, Explore or any other way, i've tried a dozen, to get into it and view the files. Every time, it comes up with the "format this drive" message. Can't you just like SAVE it all in files and remember the names therefor
not having your computer slow down or data being lost?

I can't even get into the drive to save anything. All my, admittedly feeble, attempts at breaking into the drive are rebuffed with the "Please format this drive" messageI belive some pro's can acces things like that...
but Its possible that some things there arrent coming back...
Try this

Buy an external enclosure, take the second drive out and put it in the enclosure, plug it into another machine and see if you can transfer your data. Then try plugging it into your updated Vista machine and see if it is recognized. If it can see the drive then move the data and format, OTHERWISE move it onto another computer, replace it in the Vista computer and format.Quote from: ArizonaSurf on December 12, 2007, 10:40:56 AM
I dont want to lose my data so I removed the drive and thought that I could access it by installing the drive in a portable USB case. The computer still asks me to format.

I have unfortunatly already tried that, Kando. Was that from plugging it into the Vista machine or another computer?

You could try a live Linux CD, once it loads then see if the two hard drives are accessible. If so then move the data. Both Knoppix and Ubuntu have nice graphical interfaces and are pretty quick to load.

I think you should take your drive to a computerstore and ask
if they can restore the information that is in the drive, but i am not sure that they can restore all the information,
anyhow if they can you can put the stuff somewhere else and format the drive,
but are there verry valuable things on that thing? What OS did you use before upgrading to Vista?

If that worked, I'd suggest you back to that one, back up your data, and re install Vista.

Or, from my quick search on the net, try a live Linux version (one that runs from the CD).

A HD in RAW filesystem, is (for Windows) a HD that isn't formatted in either FAT, FAT32 or NTFS.

What I think happend is this (please correct me if I'm wrong):
I think you had a Linux version installed, and both HD's formatted in a Linux compatible filesystem.

The filesystem that Linux uses is different than Windows.
Windows can not read filesystems formatted for Linux, so Windows (Vista in your case) can't read the disk, simply because it isn't FAT, FAT32 or NTFS.

Also, your BIOS must support 48-bit LBA ATAPI.
For more on this please read:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305098#kb1

I know it's for Win2000 and earlier, but it DESCRIBES also what happens if your BIOS doesn't support this.Try the below free trial and see if it recognizes your drive.

Solve : Regional Setting on DVD player??

Answer»

I just purchased a DVD double Layer player and have installed it on my desktop. There is this "set REGION" issue on it. Must I set a region, or can I LEAVE it unset. I live in Ghana and the DVD Player is a SAMSUNG. Must I set it to US because I watch DVDs in English? It depends on what regions DVDs you're planning to watch.
But remember, you can change region only FIVE TIMES! After that, you're stuck with latest setting.
Read more:
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1673
http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/dvd/regions/regions.phpGhana is region 5. If ALL of your discs are this same region, that's what you'll want to set it to.

Like Broni said, you can only change your region 5 times, then it can't easily be changed again. However, there are region-free (also called region 0) DVD drives and players available, if you have the NEED to be able to watch DVDs from multiple regions. However, some DVDs from certain companies are designed to refuse to play on players of this type.

I currently live in region 3, but I watch DVDs from 1 (US/Canada), 2 (Japan/Europe) and 3 (Southeast Asia). So both my drive and my player are region free devices. I've had no problems yet, and I've got quite a collection of DVD movies (over 200).

If you are interested in a region-free player/drive and watching movies from different places, make sure you get one that supports both NTSC and PAL.

Wikipedia has a good article on DVD zones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

Solve : Boots to Welcome in XP Pro..?

Answer»

My DELL 4100 with a PowerLeap processor only will boot to the "welcome" screen with our profile icon. When I click on the Admin or our profile icon I get a "processing settings" message then a shot on the monitor of my screen's wallpaper without icons, then the computer reverts to the "welcome" screen again with "saving settings" as a message.

At one point I got the error CMOS is low.

Tried CMOS reset and a new coin cell battery. No diff.

Tried booting from the XP Pro CD and I keep getting the Welcome screen problem.

I believe this might be related to a Registry cleaner I use because a second computer I own must be started twice now for it to boot properly. Yes, I RAN the same registry cleaner on the second computer as well.

I do have a backup of the System on a portable hard drive.

I just don't believe it's a MOTHERBOARD or software reinstall issue.

Ideas? Thanks. Will it boot in Safe Mode?

Did you take a backup of the registry before using the registry cleaner? No and yes.

Won't boot to safe mode.

And the back-up is on a external hard drive.

Can't fig. how to get it to boot via my busted computer.More DETAILS...
What cleaner ?
What happened prior to this ?RegCure.

Installed a fan for the case that powers off the 4 pin power cable. It's been running for 3 days.

Removed Rhapsody software using the windows ADD/Remove.
Ran the RegCure.RegCure although not for the weak and timid does make a backup automatically...have you tried restoring any of these ? ?
It's a powerful tool not to be taken lightly.I wish I could restore.

Can't get the machine to load settings succesfully for me to ACCESS the programs.

I boot the computer and the profile icons show on the blue Welcome screen. I click on the profile for Admin. or my own and the dialogue is: loading settings, then a shot of only my wallpaper/background and in 3 seconds the Welcome screen displays again with: saving settings. I'm left with the Welcome screen only. This same thing happens when I boot in safe mode.

PSU issue? You could try booting from your XP cd and going to the recovery console.

From there you may be able to use reg.exe to restore your registry to the backup copy that you have.

http://www.petri.co.il/reg_command_in_windows_xp.htm
See here for an explanation of reg.exeTried booting from the XP Pro CD and I keep getting the Welcome screen problem. Yes, I set the Bio for boot from CD Drive.

Getting my RegCure registration key # so I can email their support.

Does it seem like it could be a PSU unit problem or Motherboard problem?
I remember getting the CMOS low battery warning in the middle of work.Sounds like a CLEAN install is in order. If you can, pull the drive, slave it to another system & get your data. Reinstall to original system and do a clean install.

Alan <>< Strange that you get the Welcome screen when booting from CD. Try going into the BIOS, then setting first boot device to cd, and all other boot devices to disabled.

If that fails, I would try a reinstall on a different hard disk (if you have one spare) like Alan says. You can then recover all your data by connecting your old disk as a second drive.

This will also rule out (or in) hardware faults.Big thanks to you all! Got home and worked at getting the machine to boot from the CD. Had to change settings in the BIOS IDE settings to get a boot from the XP Pro CD. Did a Repair and update of SP2.
We are at peace now.Good Job !

Solve : computer died...need some help?

Answer»

So, I've been out of the world of computers for a while. I have a 3 YEAR old system that died the other day. I was planning on getting a new computer anyway, but before I mess with everything I have a question if anyone can help.

I was downloading some stuff and came back to check on my computer, and everything was going super quick. The clock was even ticking away minutes about every 10 seconds or so. I tried to restart it, and it just came up with a dead black screen. I turned it off, and it never turned back on. My question, if it is possible to know this, is would this be a virus or did my hardware finally just throw in the towel? I want to know so that I can hopefully safely get the INFO off of the hard drives/use the hard drives with new system safely without risk of infecting a new system. If it was hardware, then that's no PROBLEM. If it's a virus or something else, then it could be tricky.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!I'm not aware of a virus that will cause these issues...
My first suspect would be the PSU.
But your first priority before swapping things in and out should be to retrieve your data.
You can safely HOOK up your hard drives as slave drives one at a time in a working machine, preferably with a burner so you can copy/burn your important stuff.

To be on the safe side scan your drives in the other machine with a solid AV and malware scanner just to be safe...

Then borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to see how things run.Did you know of all the little chips on the mobo, the most likely chip to become faulty (after processor, INTEGRATED GPU and integrated audio), is the Timer chip? an interesting fact in this circumstance....The OP has not returned in 10 days.

Solve : Windows isn't allowing me the maximum capacity of my hard drive!?

I have a home-built PC with Win XP. I just installed a new 500g HD to replace an older 160g. The old hard drive was causing PROBLEMS and it got to the point where Windows wasn't starting up, so I ended up cloning the old hard drive onto the new one. Now I'm working off the new hard drive but for whatever reason Windows thinks it's 160g and won't allow me to exceed that. How should I go about fixing this? you beat me to it Broni. You know...once it goes this way, another time, the other way...LOLYeah its sp2. Any other ideas?Probably since you cloned your old drive and put it on the new one its only seeing that partition. If you have another PC and a network try moving the FILES to it or get a HD Enclosure and have the drive that you want to use in your PC an connect the one you want to move the files off of to it. This is only a theory, but you can try doing it.Quote
Probably since you cloned your old drive and put it on the new one its only seeing that partition.
Nice...If your lucky you might be able to use disk management to see the full size that your BIOS is reporting to windows:

Start->Run, Diskmgmt.msc

once that starts, peruse the graphs it displays at the bottom. Look for sections labelled "UNALLOCATED space". If you find one of 340GB (AROUND) you might be lucky and able to make a new partition in that space to use the full space.

1: Could you see the full size of the drive before you cloned it?

a Very remote possibility (virtually nil, in fact I am unsure why I write it) is that your Original HD parameters were set in the CMOS specifically RATHER then being set to AUTO. once again, VERY remote. Also, While your in there, look for something related to Hard disk setup. My Award BIOS has a option labelled "IDE HDD autoDetection" that will display the parameters (including total size) of all HD's it finds on the system. I just have to remember to press Esc at each prompt display.

On the other hand my computer is from 1999 so I can't even be sure that newer BIOS'es even have this type of option.

If the HD cloning util you used simply created an equal size partition on your new drive you'll be able to create new partitions in the remaining space. if you don't find any unallocated space though....

Is it really a sound CARD problem though? I do lose sound, but I'm not sure why I would only be able to stream the first TWO seconds of a streaming video (ie. YouTube) before it stops.anything is better then the soundmax card. you can buy just a cheap sound blaster audigy for $32.00CAD or an X-Fi (recommended) for just $50.00CAD. i am not 100% sure that this problem is caused by the soundmax card, but i have heard of many different people having many different problems and the card is the root of it.Replacing the sound card is definitely worth a try. When I upgraded my computer from 98 to XP I found my sound would cut out randomly in games and so forth. Turns out that my AWE32 was just not friendly enough to XP. And I never tried to do anything on UTube since at this point I didn't have the net, so I cannot confirm any video-type problems.

I've just been over to the VMware forums, and it seems there are quite a few posts regarding keyboard PROBLEMS after either installing or uninstalling. Solve : Computer seems dead?

Answer»

Hope someone has some ideas for a computer 'newbie'

The problem with my PC is that it just suddenly went completely dead. When I 'power' it up, nothing at all happens, no beebs, no fans run nothing. I thought it was a power supply problem, so I replaced that and still no joy. Power seems to be getting through as the keyboard power indicator lights up when I turn the power supply on, but nothing else seems to happen. I have noticed that occasionally when I switch the PC on, the CPU fan judders slightly - but then that is it. All the cable connections seem fine.

you replaced the PS with a new one and it still doesnt work? the first thing that comes to my mind is a motherboard FAILURE, assuming that you have everything hooked up right.I just started having the same problem. I press the 'on' button and nothing happens. Somehow the issue occasionally resolves itself when I unplug it and then plug it back in, then press the 'on' button and it will come on. Sometimes this doesn't work - it will act like a car that needs a 'jumpstart', it will just start to turn on, but then it won't. Could this be a power supply issue?Disconnect everything apart from cpu, heatsink & fan, RAM, graphics CARD and monitor. Now start the pc and come back and let use know what happens. Could be that your cpu fan has died, but lets see.

Solve : Computer will not start (but appears to be minimally functional) [laptop]?

Answer»

Riiight. So, my computer's running and it's basically FROZEN. I hit start -> shut down...wait a good 3 hours. Come back. Hasn't loaded the SCREEN to ask me. I hit ctrl+alt+del, and the alternate menu shows up (as OPPOSED to ctrl+alt+del opening task manager). I hit shut down there...nothing happens for another 3 hours.

I decide to unplug the power and wait for it to hibernate.

Becoming impatient, I tried to hold the switch for the power on the laptop, which didn't do anything, after 10 tries of about a minute of holding down the power button, each.

Then, I did something, in retrospect, which was really stupid. Pulled out the BATTERY. Most likely, this did something...well, bad.

Computer won't turn back on now (not like it's more functional than before -_-). The battery light will light up to signify that it's charging the battery, and the light will light up at the back of the computer to show that it's connected to the network.

It's an Acer TravelMate 610TXVi
From what I can remember...specs are:
Pentium III - 768 MHz
256MB of RAM
Intel Graphics Card 80210 (the number I'm less sure on.)

Is there anything I can do, short of taking it apart/sending it in for repair?

I'd prefer not to send it in...as it contains... >_> embarrasing bits of data. I'm pretty sure you GET the gist of it.

Solve : 300W Power Supply enough??

Answer»

Hello, I've been thinking of buying a NEW video card for my computer.
The video card I have now is GeForce Ti 4200 and the new will be GeForce 7950GT.

So I was wondering if my Power Supply which is 300W is enough?

I have:
Pentium 4 3,06 Ghz
1,5 RAM
75 GB HDD
DVD burner
3.5 floppy

Thanks in advance. What does the card manufacturer say about system requirements? If they don't specify a power supply greater than 300W, I'd say you'll be OK. If you'd like to get an actual Wattage number on your system with that new card installed, visit http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and enter the appropriate selections for your system. Thanks, but still too complicated for me.
Is there any software that count this by itself?
I mean, count how much my power supply use? Quote from: dvcorleone on December 12, 2007, 10:31:48 AM

Thanks, but still too complicated for me.
Why? Did you actually visit the site and try it? By the way, I just discovered a mistake in the URL I had posted; I just now corrected it.

I don't think so.http://www.journeysystems.com/power_supply_calculator_popup.phpOK.

I used http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and my usage were under 300W WITHOUT the last option: Capacitor Aging, which I don't know what it is.
If I set Capacitor Aging 50% I get way over 300W.

So, what is Capacitor Aging? Power supplies used heavily or for a long TIME tend to lose a bit of their wattage over time. Read the footnotes at the bottom of the page, it explains it all there.

Solve : Added RAM, EFF'd up Computer. Need Help!?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with 1 gig of RAM. 4 x 256 mb DDR SDRAM. My Computer's capacity is 4 gigs of RAM.
Last year I had 512 mb (2 x 256) of RAM and added another 512 mb (2 x 256) of RAM. It was really easy to install and my computer recognized it with no problems (purchased it from Dell).

I purchased 2 x 1 gig RAM from a Power seller on EBAY with 99.9% Pos FB (close to 10000 pos fb) So I felt like I could buy with confidence and my computer model was listed as 100% campatible (Im not worried about the money ISSUE, cuz 30-day money back)

These are the steps & problems Ive had with the installation (2 days ago):

- took out the paired RAM sticks, and left the other 2 RAM sticks
- added the 2 1 gig RAM sticks and put it in the appropriate spots
- turned on computer and got the following messege

"The AMOUNT of system memory has changed.
Diskette drive 0 seek failure
Primary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to coninue, F2 setup utility"
(it was somthing like that)

- I pressed F2 setup utility and I looked under memory and my computer detected the memory 2500 mb RAM (2 x 256 mb + 2 x 1 gig). I exited and it asked to press contol + alt+ delete
- I restarted and after a few tries windows finally loaded up, I went into control panel -> system -> system properties to view it and my RAM was listed as 2.5 gb RAM.
- After a few minutes I got the BLUE SCREEN and it mentioned something about "KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR"

- I tried a few other things, like only kept the 2 1 gig ram sticks in the slots but everything the same happned as described earlier

- I finally gave up and put the 4 original RAM sticks back to were they used to be, I rebooted and got the similar message again
"Diskette drive 0 seek failure
Primary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to coninue, F2 setup utility"
- After a few failed reboots, I took out a RAM stick and just slid it back in and finally wndows statred up and after a few minutes I got a BLUE SCREEN again
- after a few reboots I choose "Last known WORKING configuration" and loaded up to a messed up windows.

I decided to format HD and re-install everything. Dduring that process Ive had to restart the computer many times due to programs and updates requesting it, and every reboot worked with no problem. Until today a program froze so I just rebooted and got that horrible messege again
"Diskette drive 0 seek failure
Primary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to coninue, F2 setup utility"

And after a couple tries windows loaded up.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHATS GOIN ON, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Do a little AMD vs. Intel research. Results from different people for benchmarks and actual performance tests go different ways. SOMETIMES AMD, sometimes Intel. It's been that way since the beginning, and it's still that way with the dual-core processors. However, research does show that each processor handles the same task differently. Sometimes AMD would out-perform Intel at games, sometimes the other way around. It all depends on who did the test, the conditions of the test, the other hardware involved, blah blah blah.I think IM gona go with the intel.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, do you?

Intel > AMD, Conroe > K8, Penryn > Phenom

That is the CURRENT reality. Choose to look at it or don't, but don't tell me what you'd like to see it as.As this thread has SPUN out of control and no longer serving any purpose the conversation is over.

Solve : Switched monitors, now I can't switch back?

Answer»

I was preparing to build a new pc so I brought a relative's computer down to my house. It's a Dell Dimension L700cx with a Dell E551a monitor. I decided to switch monitors so I could browse the Internet easier. So my new monitor was hooked up to my relative's computer. Then my PC parts came and I PUT them together. Then I removed the new monitor from my relative's computer and hooked up my relative's monitor. I booted up the computer and after it got past the Windows 98 loading screen the screen went black and all the led lights started blinking. I could hear the os starting up.

I hooked the new monitor back up. It worked perfectly. I could go into safe mode with the relative's monitor and I tried to reinstall the monitor drives, but it still won't work! What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to work?1. The first thing that comes to mind is that your "display properties" are set to values that the "old" monitor cannot support. Specifically the display resolution, the color quality, and monitor's refresh rate. Suggest that you force your display properties to lower values you know the old monitor can support.

2. While I know you're dealing with a Dell, HP's procedures should be acceptable. Basically connect the old monitor, reboot into safe mode, force a reset of the display properties to basic VGA values (by hitting "Apply"), and then reboot into normal mode. Once in normal mode, you should have your display back so you may reset display properties to the values you want.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph04198&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=61605&rule=44904&lang=en

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07120&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=61605&rule=44904&lang=en

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=61605&rule=44904&lang=en&docname=c00003408#c00003408_monitor

3. Or you could reset the display properties using the "new" monitor. Boot the system up normally. Reset the display resolution to a known safe value, e.g. 800 by 600 pixels, set the color quality to Medium (16-bits), and set the monitor refresh rate to "60 Hertz". To accomplish this:

o Right click on a blank area of the desktop, a context menu should appear.
o Left click on the "Properties" item, the "Display Properties" window should appear.
o If not already SELECTED, left click on "Settings" tab.
o In lower left of window there should be a screen resolution slider. slide it left until you get "800 by 600" pixels".

Next set the color quality:
o Toward the bottom right of the current window there's is a "Color Quality" box with pull-down value menu. Reset it to Medium (16-bit).

Next ensure the monitor refresh rate is in a safe range for the old monitor, e.g. "60 Hertz".
From the previous "Display Properties" window, with "Settings" tab selected:

o Left click on "Advanced" BUTTON in lower right of Settings tab window. A new window will appear with multiple tabs.
o Left click the "Monitor" tab. There's usually a "Monitor settings" subsection in the middle of the resulting window with a box for the "Screen refresh rate". If there's a checkbox below this box that says "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display", check the checkbox to ensure only "safe" monitor setting values are displayed. However these would only be safe monitor settings for the current monitor. For now, set screen refresh rate to safe value of "60 Hertz".

Now click "APPLY" and/or "OK" on all display property windows to apply and back out of the APPLICATION. Hopefully your display properties are now set to values that are compatible with the old monitor.
I'm sorry I did not respond in a timely manner. Thank you though, your solution worked perfectly.

Solve : Computer freezes after installing Wireless Router and Battery backup?

Answer»

About 9weeks ago we got High Speed Internet SERVICE and I purchased A Linksys WRT 300N Wireless Router and a APC Back-Ups BX 1300 LCD. Unfortunately, I hooked both up at the same time. Mainly because by present Battery backup didn't have enough Battery backup Pluck-ins. My Computer has been freezing since. The tech that came to my house to set up the network thought that the Problem was caused by the battery backup. I got in touch with their Support and followed their instructions. First they had me UNINSTALL their Software and download the new one from their website. It still froze. They had me uninstall the software and run it without. It still froze. They freezing happens at different TIMES. Sometimes on the net , sometimes running programs. Their SEEMS no one reason for it. It could be every 2 to 3 days, or sometimes not for 2 weeks. A Computer group I belong to suggested it might be the Power Supply. I took the Computer in and they tested the Power Supply and run the Computer for several days without it freezing. They told me the Power Supply was fine. I just don't know where to go from here and was hoping someone at your Forum could help me. I have an HP Media center m7170n Computer with Windows XP Pro SP2, 3:00 Gigahertz Intel Pentium D, 2GB Ram, 250 GB Maxtor 6B250SO Hard Drive , Radeon X300. Thank You

Solve : How do i update my computers drivers??

Answer»

id like to know how to update the driver for my video card (or whatever its intel) because my MONITOR is stuck at 640x480. i tried the generic way and it didnt work.it has somthing to do with going to start, right clicking on on my computer then mananage. thats all i remember. thanks Right-click My Computer, properties, and then click hardware.

Now click Device Manager. Now go to Display Adaptors.Double click
on display drivers, right click on your display adaptor and choose
Update Driver.

Hope this is what you were asking. It is what I concluded from your
post.

I voted No on fix monitor..... Well what if i never had the driver installed because i just reinstalled windows (too much crap) and now i cant find itThen you need to DOWNLOAD and run Everest and let us know which
Version of windows you are using and what video card Everest reports.

Download Everest-->http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Then follow a path provided by "street1", and click on "+" sign next to "Other Devices". This directory may be already open with one, or more entries, having yellow exclamation mark next to them. One of those entries will say something about video, or graphics. That's the device, you'll need new driver for.
But first, you have to get that driver.
If you have video card (not on-board video chip) installed on your computer, you still may have a CD, which came with your card. If not, it has to find on the internet.
If you don't have separate video card, you need to tell us your Windows version, your computer brand, and model, and we'll try to find that driver for you.Um im running windows XP SP2... THe computer is a GATEWAY...i dont know. but i figured out that my graphics card is an Intel 82845g/gl/gv (i ran everest and found it) I believe that is the name. It says exactly:

Intel 82845G/GL/GV Graphics controller (and below it)
Intel 82845G/GL/GV/GE/PE Memory Controller

i found that in Devices - physical devices - under PCI devicesVery good!!!
Here is your video driver:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=865
Just pick your Windows version. What is it, anyway? XP?
On next page, you'll have a choice. ".exe", or ".zip" version.
Get exe, it's easier (unless you are on dial-up).
Download it to KNOWN location, and then double click it. It'll expand (most likely to very same place, were your original file is).
Leave it at that.
Go back to Device Manager, right click on Intel 82845G/GL/GV Graphics controller, and click "Update Driver". Windows Wizard should find your new files.
Post back with any problems.
Good luck.No i am actually very skilled with computers, and i know i'd need the zip (assuming its the sorce) if i was on linux. then i would go to command line but anyways... i have a 120k connection so its DONE fast. (im doing this as im typing) im installing it...Next..yes..i agree...who cares really? YES!! i went into controll pannel and then display and (whatever) and changed it!!! NOW I CAN PLAY STARPORT GE! and install linux!! (jk)Good job

Solve : SATA bandwidth/throughput Question?

Answer»

If a high performance SATA II RAID setup is showing 500-800 MB/s in read and write capabilities in benchmarks, that's not reaching the SATA limit, right?

SATA II is 3 Gb/s or 375 MB/s. Does this mean that it can only read/write up to 375 MB/s OR that it can only TRANSFER from one HD to another at 375 MB/s maximum? I believe it's the latter, meaning it's not worthless if your RAID 0 array can read AVG. 900 MB/s.

Also, a bonus question if anyone wants to try. You don't have to read cuz it's kinda long:

I'm wanting to be able to FRAPS video game footage at a higher resolution without dropped frames (i.e., laggy video).
Here's a benchmark program on my RAID 0 array, which is average. Better/faster than non-RAID 0, though. Notice on the 1024 or 8192 line. My write speeds are 60-70 MB/s (my read speeds are 100 MB/s average).

If you record at 800x600 how much data needs to be written per second? Here's the math:

800x600 = 480,000 total pixels
You want FULL color? Ok. That's 32-bit which means 32 bpp (bits per pixel). Or 4 bytes per pixel. So how much is an uncompressed 800x600 image? 480,000 x 4 bytes = 1,920,000 bytes = 1.83 MB

So when most people fraps they're demanding more than their HD's can handle. 1.83 MB x 30fps = 55 MB/s

So I can record with Camtasia or FRAPS at 800x600 in 32bpp. But not 1024x768 or higher or I'll get slightly laggy video sometimes.

(FYI: 1024x768, 32bpp, 30fps = 3,145,728 bytes = 3.1 MB // 3.1 MB x 30fps = 93 MB/s)Pump, pump the jam. Pump it up! BUMP THIS THREAD UP!

I'm having trouble with two of my desktops.
Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts INDEFINITELY. Any ideas what's going on here?

I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I DISCONNECTED power, along with everything else, from a desktop of MINE. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole NEW desktop.

My version works fine that way (albiet as a component of C&C the first decade....).Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 12, 2007, 03:43:19 PM

thnx for help thoughdid a google search on the function in question and lo and behold the first hit was actually related to Red Alert. But I'll cut to the chase. EA has information on this issue here:

Link Edit

Not sure if you've already discovered this and found it to not work in your situation, but it might help. Short of of course actually TRYING to get your hands on a copy of "the first decade".Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 13, 2007, 09:29:13 AM

Solve : Horrible DVD/CDR and Removable Drive problem?

Answer»

I hope this is the proper area for this line of questioning.

Edit: right now, I am at the point where I would be willing to use my restoration disk and lose tons of data, but A) I of course have somehow misplaced it and B) I doubt it would work anyway since I can't get the drive to properly read from CDs anyway. ::Sigh:: There has GOT to be a way to fix this. It DOES aknowledge that the drives exist. They just aren't accessable for some unknown reason.

Anyway, I am having a strange problem. It seems like two or THREE problems, but they are probably related.

1. My DVD/CD R Drive has stopped working properly. It won't read anything that is put into it properly, be it a game CD or DVD or a movie DVD. The icon, when a game disk is in it, appears as a "broken link" kind of icon if you know what I mean. I will post a screen shot. Strangely enough, the computer claims that the device is "working properly".

2. I keep getting an error message whenever I try to access my external hard drive saying that the drive is not accessable and that access is denied.

3. I am also getting the same error message as described in number 2 when I try to hook my Mp3 player up to my PC. So its as if there is something wrong with anything that could be seen as "removable storage".

This only started happening a few hours ago. I restarted my computer, and boom, I had the problem. I had been playing the game "Oblivion" just fine a few hours before, and a few hours before that, I had no trouble accessing my Seagate external hard drive. I would certainly appreciate help in CORRECTING this fairly serious problem.

Screen shot of the icons found in "My Computer". The one circled in read is the external drive, the one circled in black is the DVD/CD R with a disk inside it (Knights of the Nine Oblivion Expansion Pack disk). Also, is my disk drive supposed to be listed under "removable storage" while the one that is actually removable storage is up with the C drive icon?

This one is of the access denied error message I get when I try to access my Seagate.

And here are my DVD/CD R properties claiming that everything is working fine. It also shows what kind of disk drive it is.

Anyway, I would appreciate any help I can get in correcting this serious problem. Thank you in advance.

-------------------------------------------------------If the optical drive is having issues Windows by nature will also struggle with reading /assigning drive letters to other drives...
To diagnose this remove the dvd drive and try it in another machine...if it still has issues then it needs to be replaced.

And if I replace it, if that is what is needed, everything else will function properly?

I just don't get how it could work before a restart and then stop working after a restart, if its a problem with the disk drive itself. As my screen shot above shows, the drive does indicate what disk is inside it. If I put a DVD copy of "The Birds" in it, it shows in the icon that "The Birds" is in the drive. If I put my Oblivion disk in there, it shows that Oblivion is in the drive. It just doesn't read it or show the proper icon. Instead, it shows that "broken link" looking icon.

I hope its a simple matter to put it on my old computer. I will have to take the old one out of my old PC to do this. I hope I do not screw anything up even further. Thanks for your suggestion. Here is some further INFO. I took the advice of the troubleshooter, and uninstalled and then reinstalled the plug and play drivers, which of course did not help. But when I did that, the icon for the drive looked like this until I clicked on it:

Does this have any special significance other than the obvious fact that the drive is not working right?Have you tested it in another machine yet ? ?

No, not yet, sorry, for me that is going to be a major production, so I have to wait until tommorow, but in the mean time, I have been trying other things. I will post again once I have given it a shot. Thanks again.

Edit: I have discovered that it DOES work while in diagnostic mode. Do you think that I should still try it on my old PC? So this must be some sort of error. Its GOT to be fixable. I just need to know HOW to fix it. I am also getting a strange error message when I use msconfig to change the start up options saying that I may need to log into an administrator account to make changes, yet this IS my administrator account, and I have no others at this time. The changes seem to get made anyway, though. How is the CDRom listed in Device Manager ? ?
Right click it and select Remove and re-boot...
This may or may not make a difference.Well, its all moot now. I discovered, through my Acer "Empowering Technology" program that I had a partition set aside so that I could recover the factory shipped state of the PC without a disk. I WENT ahead and did that and everything is working fine. TY for taking the time to try to help me, Patio. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime !

Solve : E6750 CPU Temp ? Too High ??

Answer»

Hey everyone I just got running a new setup, which involved a intel motherboard, e6750 2.66 dual core processor, 8600gt ect

My cpu temp shown in bios for the CPU is around 45 C in the booklet that came with the CPU it states it should be around 38 C. Is this too high?

I tried a different heatsink / fan that i bought for 30 bucks but it went higher temp than the stock. Thanks!I just downloaded a program CALLED core temp and it said my cpu core # 1 was around 30 and # 2 was around 30 . THink thats ACCURATE?
It's been a while since I've read up on CPU temp thresholds, but I know older chips (2-6 yrs) are around 90-100° C when they start to become ruined.

You can never trust SOFTWARE temperature gauges. It's very difficult to get an accurate measure of your temps even with real thermometers.

BTW, 30-50 C° is very common and is fine. CPU should live a long life.
JUST FYI:
Water cooling is better than standard air cooling. I've always water cooled my CPU's because the difference between 'idle' and 'load' is quite a bit on air. With liquid cooling there's but 5-10° C difference between 0% CPU usage and after I've been gaming for 3 hrs at 100% CPU usage. I think with air you can go from 35° to 55° under a load.Quote

did you apply thermal paste?

is your case well ventilated? a CPU cooler, regardless of make/model, will not do a good job if the ambient case temperature is fairly high.I did apply thermal paste. I also bought a fan for the front of the case, and I have a fan at the rear of the case. The one at the front brings in air, while the one at the back blows air out.

The heatsink/fan that i bought had the same senario as the OEM but the OEM performed better.
