Solve : Graphics card causing Windows display errors?

Answer»

Hoping someone can help out there

I just did a fresh install of Windows 98 SE after completely wiping and formatting the hard drive. Downloaded latest drivers (81.98) for my nVidia 5200 FX 128MB graphics card, but after install and restart the Windows loading screen becomes distorted and most times goes black with white symbols/letters running in vertical lines over the screen.

Sometimes it loads to windows but the display is all glitched/blurry. Loads to safe mode fine. I receive an ERROR (nvudisp.exe) trying to uninstall the drivers and trying to install OLDER drivers brings up an error ('Setup was unable to locate any NVIDIA graphics chips on the system'). Sometimes when windows loads normally I will receive 'nvsvc.exe' has performed an illegal operation error.

The computer has not been connected to the internet at all and no viruses or anything are present. Video card was fine before format.. Is this a driver issue? Do I have to download anything else before my video card drivers? I'm willing to wipe and reinstall again to follow new STEPS if I must!

Thankyou for your time

Jerome

if no one has any other ideas, try installing the original drivers. You probably have them on disk some where, and those work for sure. I'm just reformatting my harddrive and installing windows again because I couldn't GET any drivers to uninstall, they were just stacking and causing problems.

Before I install the video drivers this time, on a fresh install of windows, is there anything else I should install before this? Are there such things as motherboard drivers? or processor ones? I have no idea, just thinking that maybe the system needs updating before I can install the video drivers. The MBoard drivers definitely need to be re-installed on a new install...in fact they should always be installed BEFORE any other drivers...Fresh install of Windows OS, installed motherboard drivers, installed Chipset drivers (which noone said anything about) and then tried the graphics drivers. Computer is worse than before, won't go near windows startup. Don't know why but now I can't even get to a command prompt...it shows POST screen and loads IDE drives but then comes to a flashing curser, no further.Sorry for the mis-understanding but the reason chipset drivers weren't mentioned is they are usually part of the MBoard driver set...
Since you SAY you are able to enter safemode i would suggest powering down and physically removing that vid card and re-booting into safe mode and remove the nVidia drivers...
See if this enables the machine to boot properly and double check to see if that card will run under Win98...The problem with that patio is that the motherboard has no on-board display adaptor. ie. to see the screen, it has to plugged into the nvidia card. For a short time there I could remove the nvidia drivers if I loaded just the standard windows graphics drivers. The card is definately compatible with win98SE as it was running merely weeks ago.

I am wondering if perhaps something is damaged with the card/graphics card slot? It's had because I could just get another card for $50 or get the whole system checked for $100, but if the slot is damaged then I waste $50 and if it's just the card I waste $100! Any suggestions? Thanks for your help so far!Does a friend have an appropriate video card for you to install and try for a short time? If so, remember to uninstall these drivers before installing the other card.

I always have a cheap low end PCI card around which will fit in any computer. (ATI 8 meg.)

I edited my post making it easier to get to the websites after the post of the links being in green. I'm not color blind and I don't know why you'd even bother saying that.It wasn't meant to be an insult or anything. I was asking sincerely. Solve : power issue?

Answer»

When i boot up my computer the VDD value is way below what it should be, normally below 1.4, when it should be higher than 1.5. I tried moving around connections, unplugged things to see if that would fix it. Even got a new power supply and still having the issue. It will randomly shut off at times; also it may not even make it to the log in screen and will restart just when it comes up. Everything seems to be working fine besides the power issue. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

I have 2 hd's, a cd/dvd DRIVE, cd burner, and a floppy a drive so theres no huge power amounts NEEDED, the power supply i got is 12v 430 watt output. Is your computer shutting off, re-starting or both?
Does it happen in safe mode?just restarting, this all started when my video card's fan MELTED and broke. I figured it was just that and when i REMOVED it and put in a new video card, the power issue came up, it had been a little low for a while with the previous video card but only low by .05 at the most. Now its low by .4. It seems when i run a lot of programs it fails, i've been running only the programs i need since i need my computer for school. I haven't used it in safe mode since i figured it wouldn't make a differance because it was a power ISSSUE.

Solve : Laptop touch-pad help?

Answer»

Having major PROBLEMS adapting to a laptop. It's fine using the touch-pad, but I'll just be scrolling and it'll register a click and it's really annoying. Is there anyway I can disable the touch-pad click, not the touch-pad completely, just the touch-pad click. I have a Fujitsu-Siemens and PS/2 mouse... if that helps. Can anyone help me out? This MIGHT take a little bit of searching on your part because I've never seen it done the same way on DIFFERENT laptops.

First, you want to go to Start > Control Panel > Mouse.

This will bring up info/settings for your mouse. From there, you'll want to look for anything that mentions Tapping. This will LIKELY be found by clicking on the Hardware or Device Settings tab. If you find it, disable Tapping and OK out of the window.

If you have trouble finding it, try POSTING a screenshot of your Mouse Properties and perhaps we can use that to help assist you.http://img108.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mouse1dp2.jpg" target="_blank">http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/90/mouse1dp2.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" />[/url]

I've tried control panel, but no dice, sadly.Could we possibly get bigger pictures? Or at least one. Those are a bit too small and I can't make much out. Also, if you can, I'd like to see everything in the Control Panel folder.

Solve : Vista Not Compatable?

Answer»

hi Guys yet another problem
i have just tried to install vista onto my system all is ok but i can not load any drivers (motherboard) onto it as setup is not COMPATABLE is there anything i can do?
i.e download motherboard biods update or do i have to yet again get another motherboard.
currently it is MSI K9MM-V with VIA K8M800 chipset
cheers matt

MSI isn't up to speed on the drivers you seek.
There is an AUDIO driver there, but that's about it.

What you can do is to positively* identify all your sub-system components that need drivers.
Use your mobo manual or D/L and run Everest Free or PC Wizard to do the ID for you.

Then GO shopping for drivers.
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1104
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=36&CatID=3170

*positively...
You say K8M800. That MAY be the series, but I see K8M890 as the NB chip.
You need to be very specific or you may grab the wrong driver.

Solve : Boot Up Problems?

Answer»

hi all,

my computer was working all right, suddenly display froze and now it won't boot up
all monitor, CPU etc lights are on, fans are woking but there is no familiar beep which used to be there and there is nothing comes up on the display

win xp pro sp2
800 mhz cpu
2 nos 10 gb hddReset the BIOS to its default values by either removing the CMOS battery for ~10 seconds or by shortcircuiting the CMOS jumper.

Refer to your mainboard manual for more information.removed the CMOS battery, rebooted, its all same
no nomal beep sound and nothing comes up on displayRemove all the hardware you currently have installed and leave only a stick of RAM, the processor (+ Heatsink/fan) and the videocard in place.

Does it boot now?I have done so by USING one ram stick and taking out other hardware, once it boots up next time it does not
i have tried with both sticks as well, no changes, no display, monitor light just blinks on & off, what else should i do now thanksQuote

once it boots up next time it does not

It booted once?

Do any components make a buzzing NOISE? (Not the fans)

Have you got any spare power supplies lying about?

yes it did boot once but did not go upto windows startup.
no components are giving buzzing sound and don't have a spare power supply eitherI would try replacing both the videocard and the PSU and see if the problem repeats. If it still does, you can narrow it down to either the CPU or the motherboard.

But before you do so, do any of the motherboard capacitors appear to be leaking fluid (or dried fluid) like the ones in the example I posted below?I did all I could, as adivised but everything went wrong.

I decided to change its processor, replaced with NEW one, it statred normally.

I put the old one just for fun and it worked as well. I returned the new one and old one is still working well since Sturday.

Thanks for all help.

This morning I noticed that my PC turned on by itself, why, is there a new episode of events?

Perhaps you set it to turn on at a SPECIFIC time? Check the BIOS.

Solve : Solarpowering a P.C?

Answer»

Hye everbody!
Here's my "circuit-diagramm":
Sun(optional ) --> Solar panel (>12V) --> Inverter(min. 350W,input 12 V,output 230V) -->P.C 350W,230V

Question:
Is the wattage of a solar panel important ?I'm not 100% on this, but since wattage is important with the wall socket and power supply, I imagine the same would apply to the solar panel...Quote from: Jeronimo_Mc_Kinsley on May 25, 2007, 08:02:10 AM

Hye everbody!
Here's my "circuit-diagramm":
Sun(optional ) --> Solar panel (>12V) --> Inverter(min. 350W,input 12 V,output 230V) -->P.C 350W,230V

Question:
Is the wattage of a solar panel important ?

You are missing some components
Batteries (many 4 a computer) = storage
Regulator so you don't overcharge the batteries
And whenever you are talking about inverting from DC to AC I think you lose
like 30% of your energy, meaning your inverter needs to be at least 30% more powerful than your needs.
To set this up to work efficiently since it is a desktop so you will need a monitor, you are probably talking about $1200 to $1500

It is a great concept but technology isn't there for the common man/woman to use cost EFFECTIVELY.
Keep that MIND thinking though, it is people like you that will make a difference in this world and help things change for the better
If there's a will there is a way!
Well, me being from the "other camp" > where is the one utilizing NUCLEAR
and water cooling

nice idea*If you are using the PC for only a few hours a day, a solar panel, a couple of deep phase batteries, and a good inverter would work. The solar panel would only be used to charge the batteries, the batteries would supply the actual power (through the inverter). Dividing the panels rated wattage by its rated voltage will give you the current output*. That would be the charge rate for the batteries. You would probably need a charge regulator. This would prevent the possibility of overcharging the batteries and also prevent any backfeed to the panel. It would work without a regulator. That is a safety precaution.

*example: A panel rated at 12V and 36W would give a 3A output.First of all thanx 4 the replies

Of course I need a battery (wanted to use a car battery) Lol I 4got that

TrapperX:
According to *this SITE* I think I would get the parts I need under $1200 ;-)
P.S.: R u a Heroes fan ?

Guys thanx again for the hints on charging the battery*thumbs up*, but where should I connect the charge regulator ? (between solar panel and battery or between battery and inverter)

Solve : Got a Roland SCC-1 sound card on eBay for $87?

I am so lucky. I got a Roland SCC-1 SOUND card on eBay for $87. Check out this page:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110045792956

I knew that I would eventually be able to get one, but I did not think I'd get it this early. Yet, the previous bidder had put in an even higher BID in an attempt to make sure he would not be outbid, and that was before I put my bid in at the start of the last 30 seconds of the auction. I showed him otherwise. I also thought somebody was going to TRY to outbid me after I put in my bid, but nobody did.Hold on. Roland? That sounds ancient.. You paid 87 bucks for that?

WHY?! That could have bought you a Creative X-FI...Congratulations. That is a nice little 8 bit ISA card. Why were you lusting for that? How does it sound ? ?

If you're looking for more of those treasures I've got some VOODOO 2 CARDS for sale!

Solve : DVD-R Problem?

Answer»

Hey everyone. I'm new to the board, and I have this annoying problem with my DVD-R. I had the same problem with my old CD-R's and I never knew what caused it.

Here's the thing, the writer works just fine until all of a sudden it starts working slower, the data rate while reading drops drastically, the buffer while writing keeps going up and down throughout the burning process...which takes an insanely long amount of time btw, and it keeps doing that until I format Windows.

Now I KNOW this isn't a hardware problem because when I format and reinstall Windows, everything's fine and dandy, that means it has to be something on my PC. Some new virus maybe that my AV couldn't detect? But then what explains the fact that this used to happen to me all the time before?

Anybody got a solution for this?Do we get a clue or two about the hardware? If you don't know run Everest Home and post the report here.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

It would also be way cool to know what burning software you happen to be using...Quote

It would also be way cool to know what burning software you happen to be using...

Haha.. If you're talking about the writer it's a Samsung SH-W162Z, and I had it for about 4 months now. As for the software, I'm using Nero, but I think Windows does the same thing when I drag and drop.Go to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager...find the burner in the device list. Right click it and select Remove. You will get a warning message ignore it.
Re-boot the machine and Windows will automatically install the drivers for it.
If this fails i would try re-installing Nero...I tried both, and it didn't work. I'm pretty sure it's Windows related because it goes away every time I format and re-install Windows. And I don't think it's any other program because I didn't install anything lately.

For some reason, while burning a CD, the buffer keeps going to 97% then DROPPING to like 13%, then back to 97% again and so on. Why would it do that? Is it in some DOS COMPATIBILITY mode or something?Replace the burner...how old is it ? ?It's pretty new, I only got it a few months ago and I didn't use it that much either.

I noticed something else that might give a clue to what's going on. When it's burning, the whole computer feels like it's slowed down, like everything takes longer to load. This never used to happen before when the burner was working fine. Could this be like a memory or addressing problem or something?Have you read the below site?Read what you do then use "Guided Help"

This is a auto fix program for upper and lower filters.

"Download Guided Help"

Note We recommend that you uninstall all CD recording or CD writing programs before you delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values. You can reinstall any programs that you use after you resolve this problem.

Guided Help is available to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values that can cause CD access problems. Guided Help can automatically perform the steps for you.

SNAP!Believe it or not, but sometimes it depends on the media you use. Read over the specs of your burner to see what kind of media that is recommends you use. I usually buy what is on sale at Office Depot. When I buy some bad media, I have to slow my burner speed. If not, I make a lot of coasters.I've got a Samsung 16x burner, but I burn DVD's at 4x usually, (CD's at 32X or lower) and never a coaster! It slows for a second or two when the burning starts through Nero, but that's it.

It SOUNDS like a hardware fault. Some people find joy seeking out a firmware revision for the drive. Also, are you running in DMA or PIO mode? (It's in the Nero settings.)street1, I'm interested in checking out this Guided Help thing that you mentioned, but you didn't provide a link. Think you could post it? I have a feeling that the upper and lower filter thingy just might be the trick.

EZFrag, I'm sure it's not a media problem because now even the things I burned ages ago are being read at a much slower rate. And while they're being read, I get that constant heaviness on my PC, like I'm running a very heavy program, when in fact I'm not. And again, this didn't used to happen until recently, but since it happened once, it's been like that since.

GX1_Man, I think we've got the same burner bro. I've been burning CDs and DVDs at regular speeds just fine with no errors until that happened. And it's the same thing that happned with my old CD burners, that was fixed by reinstalling Windows. This time I want to forego the re-installation, and try to fix the problem manually.

So I doubt it's a hardware problem. One thing worth mentioning though since you mentioned firmware, my last writer was an ASUS 52x and it did the same thing as this one a few times. What I found out I could do with it though was that when I changed its firmware (just re-installing the same version), it would go back to reading and writing normally. That's the alternative I found for not reinstalling windows. I tried to do the same trick with the new one but it didn't work.

I HOPE that gives you guys another hint to the problem...

Solve : CPU Cooling?

Answer»

Does any one know a good way to cool your CPU without buying a CPU fan specifically for it? my processor tends to overheat and I was wandering the best way to cool it down. I have baught a case fan(yet to arrive) that runs at 101cfm of airflow which is very good will this affect my processor chip or just the general system? If there are no alternatives then please suggest some ideas. Thank you

You need to cool the CPU with a fan on it or some expensive and dramatic thing like water cooling (stupid idea). There is no substitue and no reason I can think of to AVOID it.

Perhaps you just need a better fan? What do you have on there? So UR CPU is over heating and u want to TAKE OUT the fan?

If the fan isnt cooling well enough, its not a reason to try and find another solution.

Your CPU fan is the one it came with in the box. In a word - it sucks. They give u the worst fan possible, just so its possible to start the CPU without buying another fan, but the truth is u have to because it dosent perform well and its loud as *censored*. All stock fans suck..

Watercooling is the best, but its loud and expensive.
What u need is a good CPU fan and Heatsink. There are many good ones for CPUs unlike graphics cards, like the Zalman CNPS9700 or Tuniq Tower.
Try to look for a round up review of different CPU coolers and see wich is best for u.Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition

Solve : I cant get sound ????

Answer»

I have a Gateway computer with speakers. I have Windows xp. For some reason, my sound is off when I want to listen to a recording or HEAR sounds when playing GAMES. I know my speakers work because when I turn on my computer, I hear the normal sounds. This has happened before and I RAN my virus scan and that seemed to work but I ran it yesterday but still cannot get sounds this morning. I have also previously rebooted and finally got the sound to work but I have done that this morning and nothing. I don't have a sound card (really don't know what that is but have never needed it). So can anyone help me? Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...what is it showing for sound devices and are there any yellow exclamation marks in the list ? ?Ok, here's what I have under device Manager:

Sound, video & game controllers.
audio codecs
legacy video capture devices
logetech microphone (messenger)
media control devices
SOUNDMAX integrated digital audio
video codecs

and this is with a question mark:

? Other devices
? PCI MODEM

thanks for any help, ElaineDo you use the modem on that machine to connect to the web ? ?
Older modems will sometimes cause conflicts with sound cards/devices.
If you don't use it remove it from the machine.
If you do use it re-install the drivers for it and re-boot.

See if this helps...

Solve : Fans are on, but nothing else...?

Answer»

Okay, I left my computer on overnight (I do that a lot...which may be why this happened..) and I sat down to use it this morning, but the monitor was acting funny. The computer was on (I can hear the fans) but the monitor's ON button has the orange light on (the one that goes on when the computer's idle). I moved the mouse back and forth so that the monitor would turn on....no luck. I shut down the computer manually (holding the button in) and turned it back on. The fans come on, but the same thing happens - the monitor acts like nothing's happening. Also, the noises that the tower usually makes when it turns on (sort of like chirping? do you know what I'm talking about?) are not being made.

This is kind of an older computer, from 2002, but it has an 80 gig hard drive, and I constantly update it with NEW anti-virus software, as well as running Ad-Aware and Spybot: Search and Destroy every other day.

Is my computer officially dead? If so, is there any way to retrieve the files I have on there?

EDIT: This is a Compaq Presario 7550 with Windows XP.From the info provided, it sounds like the power supply has issues, and that is the best place to start to trouble shoot this, as it is the least expensive REPLACEMENT. Just because you have some power does not mean you have correct power.

Start by trying another monitor on that machine and that monitor on another machine with secure connections. If that is OK we can rule out the monitor as the issue.

Do you have another known good power supply you could slip in for a test? Are you planning to repair this yourself? Do you have a somewhat geeky FRIEND who could help?

Other possibilities are malfunctioning hardware - RAM, motherboard, hard drive, etc., but let's start here.

I don't think the compuiter is dead, and certainly all the data files can easily be retrieved in a variety of ways. I don't think leaving it on overnight brought about this problem.

We'll await your response to the above. Well, this morning I TRIED to turn it on and - SURPRISE - it's working! I didn't even do anything lol. So I guess it just needed a rest. Thank you very much for your help though!Glad to hear it's working again, but... "SUPRISE"...I don't suspect your problem has 'gone away'. GX1-Man is right. It's cheap insurance to have another power supply around, expecially with this type of problem.

Solve : Computer-Moniter Issues?

Answer»

Hi. I bought a new moniter with a DVI and VGA jack for my computer.

Previously I was using an old moniter with an old VGA jack and just used that. I had a VGA-DVI Splitter on the base of my tower and EVERYTHING worked fine. When I attempted connecting the new moniter with the same VGA setup, I received no picture. I tried to connect the old moniter back up and now don't receive anything. I don't even hear the windows music boot up when the computer is TURNED on.

Asus P4GX
Intel P4 2.8
80gb 7200
512mb 400mhz

The old moniter was a Sumsung 955DF and the new moniter is a Gateway LCD.

Any IDEAS? I tried just using a regular DVI cord now but my system doesn't even seem to be WORKING correctly. I just hear the fan turn on and no lights from the mouse or anything.

Thanks!Does the computer POST? Lights & 1 beep / any beeps - lights?

Disconnect power to everything/ let set for a :15 / reconnect & restart with old monitor

Thanks for feedback That is a reasonable place to start. What happened prior to this? How old is the printer?instead of using the original HP CD, I would recommend downloading drivers from HP's website, as the cd may have outdated drivers. PM from original poster:

Solve : No movies, WMP is unusable?

You said you tried other media players but didn't specify...was VLC one of them ? ?Yes, as was Quicktime and Creative MediaSource.

Calum, I'm willing to try your advice. Can you tell me where I can find the drivers to remove them? (The 6600 drivers may still be there...)Found them, uninstalled, reinstalled, and no change.

EDIT: Winamp plays .wmv files, but loading Winamp itself is slow, and I'm only getting a black screen for video. Audio's fine. Have you considered the video files themselves may be corrupt ? ?

Calum, I'm willing to try your advice. Can you tell me where I can find the drivers to remove them? (The 6600 drivers may still be there...)
All I did to remove mine was to use the UNINSTALL utility supplied in Add/Remove programs, then reboot.
I then used CCleaner to clean, using the Issues function too.
Then I found all the folders with ATI (use nVidia for yourself obviously) and deleted them.
Then I found all the dll files and drivers, using Windows Search, to find any left over files.
I realise this was risky, but otherwise I was STUCK in 640x480 resolution . . . not good.
Make a backup of the files first, if not your whole system.
When I'd cleared them all out, I rebooted again and did the same thing in case I missed any.
Then I rebooted and installed the new drivers, then rebooted again.
Be aware of 2 things - I take no responsibility for any damage, this was just what I did and may not work for others - and that this will clear al settings related to any nVidia cards. This is why i swear by Total Uninstall...one click does all this. Thanks, Calum. Unfortunately, it's no good; still freezing. I think I better described my ISSUE in the nVidia boards:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=36510Dilbert...

This started right after the new hardware installation, but for kicks and giggles, take a look at the other media players, installed on your system, that play video files.

In the options or preferences of these other players...are they configured so that they are the default players for .wmv files? If so, configure the other players so that they are not and let Windows Media Player be the default player for these files...

Actually, if you haven't already...configure Windows Media Player as your default and then check file associations after removing the .wmv file association from the other players.

It's worth a shot...Hunh. Worth a shot. Everyone at nVidia seems to be stumped.

Let's see: VLC: No file association, but playing an mpg took me 3 minutes to kill after the screen began flickering.

Media Player Classic: Yeah, it's associated. Removed. mpg files are associated with WMP now. I tried one, and there was only audio; video was all black. Then I clicked on something, and the system locked up maxed on CPU cycles.

Improvement, but I'm afraid I'm not done yet.Not sure if you've tried this...

Have you tried uninstalling Windows Media Player through Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components?

Then reinstall the player?

Have your Windows CD handy...just in case you need it when reinstalling.

Once you do this, you may have to revist Windows update for express updates crtical to your OS.I FIXED IT!

I can't believe I didn't think of this. Back when I had the 6600, TWO games were unplayable. Installing older drivers fixed it.

I just installed the 81.94 drivers, and my movies are playing flawlessly.

EDIT: One particular video caused a crash. Oddly, Firefox saved my typing overnight in this post. I'm going to try again to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

EDIT II: Yep, that particular wmv won't play. It starts to, then the WMP window fills with green and pink colors, and I can't even ctrl-alt-del. Reset required. ODD, that file was fine before the upgrade. Oh well, I'll try a couple things, but maybe I'll have to accept a "ruined" video.

I'd email it to someone for further testing, but it's 232 MB. Update time: Long videos (100+ MB) aren't playing properly. In .wmv format they just crash my system; converting to avi makes it play, but very slowly. Some video players have issues with large file sizes.
Does that happen with all the video players you have?

I have already ordered these parts coming up i can cancel if I want to but it looks like it's going to be a solid system when I make it.
Anyways here we go!
-Ultra / X-Connect V-Series ( XVS)-Clear Side ATX Case
-700-Watt / ATX / Dual 80mm Fans / 20/24-Pin / Modular Power Supply.
-Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI NVIDIA Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz OEM Processor
-Seagate / Barracuda 7200.10 / 500GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / EIDE /HD
-BFG GeForce 7300 GT OC 256MB PCI Express Video Card
-Creative SOUND Blaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Sound Card
-2GB OCZ Dual Channel XTC 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Looks good.

I probably would have gone with a SATA hard drive instead of IDE. Also, OEM processors usually don't come with a fan / heatsink, so unless you have verified if it comes with one already, you may still need to get a fan / heatsink.ok THANKS so much I am already changing my HD. I called a friend also he TOLD me SATA is better.Just my OPINION* GuruGary <<< "ditto"

drop this*
Seagate / Barracuda 7200.10 / 500GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / EIDE /HD

get 2 of the 320 gig 16mb sata drives (if you still can and can wait .. )

looks like you want to game, the raid O and 16mb 320 hd's will purrrrr and play quicker.

I THINK* the 2 hd's are about the same cost or cheaper than the one 500 gb
the rest of the puter looks sweet ~I like the idea of going with two hard drives.

this problem which I had seen before from 2 years ago , similar to it exactly .
I would like to say the following :-
1- there is no ANYTHING rong with HDD,CDROM,flopy, processor , power supply , USB
2- the problem is in the Mboard it self , particularly in Ultra DMA 33/66 channels ( direct memory access)
so you must replace it 8-)
But before he gets a new board i'd like to have him try what i suggested.

patio. 8-)Hi Patio,
I tried as what you suggested, result just like what it was. The beep sound also like a normal.

Aside to computer engineer,
I'm not quite familiar with MOBO components. What it's MEAN by "particularly in Ultra DMA 33/66 channels ( direct memory access)
so you must replace it". Is it an IC? or something else?
Your further explaination about this perhaps may settle my problem.

I APPRECIATED the replies from you both. Thanks.

What bbeep codes did you get when you tried what i suggested ? ?Single beep..

Solve : Slow start up?

So heres the DEAL. I just bought a new AMD 64x2 4800+ processor for my computer. I installed it in and everything was fine. I loaded a fresh copy of WINDOWS XP on my hard drive loaded all the drivers, basically did everything I thought I was supposed to do. Well now I have a weird problem where, every time I start or restart my computer, it stays on the first screen where you can press delete to get into bios or f9 for xpress recovery. Anyways It stays there for like 2 or 3 minutes before any of the hardware is recognized. Once it finally recognizes it, windows starts up and everything runs fine. I was just wondering if any of you could shed some light on why it is doing this and how I could fix this.

Thanks...Make sure both the BIOS setup and Windows reports the correct processor. If either does not, let us know. Press Del to enter the BIOS and to view Device Manager in Windows, right-click My Computer, select PROPERTIES, select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Also check to see if that RAM is what the MBoard manuf. recommends...Quote

The Bios and windows both REPORT the correct processor, but In windows it shows the processor twice. Im thinking that is just because it is a dual core processor though.

Also It is the correct ram for the motherboard because I have had this computer for about a year, and it has never done that before.

I should also mention that it still does this after reformatting everything, so I am really stumped on this. PLEASE HELP ME... lolDoes the BIOS report the correct time? The BIOS battery might need to be replaced. If it is dead, the date and time in the BIOS Setup will be incorrect, and the BIOS will have to re-detect all the hardware each time you power up the computer.

Solve : Computer stalling when it boots up??

Answer»

A few months ago i had a series of troubles with my pc, which ended up in changing my power SUPPLY to a moderately cheap one, but which supplied the wattage it was supposed to, and changing my motherboard from a MSI MS-6758 to a SMALLER ASRock P4i65H with most of the former motherboard's capabilities.

The computer worked fine for a while, until it started doing something strange. Only sometimes, when i turn it on, you can hear all the fans starting up, but after a SECOND they stop completely, it stays silent for 3-4 seconds, and then it starts up again.

This only happens sometimes, and only when i power up the computer. At the time i thought it was something about the power supply. Eventually, it did break down, as in it's fan stopped working, so i BOUGHT a Thermaltake 450W. But even after this, it still continues to stall on occasion when it boots up.

I am at a loss as to what COULD be malfunctioning. Any help is highly appreciated.Power On Delay / Boot Delay---Is this option in your BIOS?

Hello,

Thank You for you Help.http://Does that monitor work on other computers? Check all connections if that is true. Do you have a spare card to test with?

I assume it used to work, so what has happened between then and now? Or it could be the monitor or the motherboard. Is there a flashing white cursor on the monitor, or is it completely black?

Check the obvious: Is the monitor plugged in? Have you pressed the power BUTTON on the monitor? Have you tried to adjust the brightness on the monitor?

Check to see if your computer show any signs of life: Do you hear the fans and hard drive spinning inside the computer case?

Do you have another monitor you can TRY?

I have tried with another monitor and it does not work.

Solve : Upgrading RAM?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have an older HP Pavilion 751n that only has 256 MB of PC2100 RAM. I checked on HPs website and was told I could upgrade to PC3200 512 MB with no problem. $65.00 later, the machine won't recognize the RAM. For a LITTLE more information, there are only two DIMM slots on the board, I am running XP Home and the processor is a P4.

I got on with an HP adviser today and he gave me the specs for the motherboard and it says it will take either 1600 or 2100 speed RAM and can go as high as 1 GB in each slot. He, however, advised me that PC2700 should work. Since 2700 is much easier to find and cheaper (not to mention faster), I would like to go with that option but don't want to PLAY the buy and return game more than I need to.

I guess I'm just looking for your gut feeling on whether you think that 2700 should work.

Thanks for your help!

Benwww.crucial.com and put in your computer info to see exactly what will work. It may not be the cheapest, but it has a lifetime warranty, quick shipping, and GUARANTEED COMPATIBILITY. What were you looking for?

Other types MAY work if ALL characteristics are met.
I went to that site when I did a search on here and found a similar post. They also stated that PC3200 should work. The stick of Kingston 512 MB 3200 RAM I bought did not. BIOS wouldn't even recognize it...yes I tried to remove and reattach 3 times to make sure it was seated OK.

Therefore, I am led to believe that 3200 is simply too fast for what I have. I would be satisfied with 1 GB of 2700 if you think that would be compatible. That should allow an enormous performance increase over 256 MB of 2100 (although I am by no means an expert).

If I bite the bullet and upgrade to either 512 or 1 GB of 2100, do you think I would notice that much of a difference?

Thanks again,
Ben.Quote

All RAM is NOT created equally.

512 is the real minimum for a usable XP system. A gig is probably overkill, although some always say more is better.Did you properly handle the RAM stick? I don't see in why Kingston wouldn't work unless the RAM was either damaged or unless you need specific Hewlett Packard RAM... Which I have never seen.

Did you try resetting the BIOS after installing the RAM?Thanks for the replies!

GX_1, I appreciate what you are saying and I have checked out the Crucial site extensively. I am much more of a software guy than a hardware guy, but my main concern is that the cards they offer for 256 and 512 are both at 3200 speed (which didn't work in my machine and the HP guy said was incompatible with my motherboard specs) and the gig chip is at 2700 (which the HP guy said would work but wasn't listed on the specs as compatible). Here are the specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07029&lc=en&cc=us⟨=en&product=77570&dlc=en

Raptor, yes, I am sure I installed the card correctly. I have never had to go into BIOS setup when I have replaced RAM in the machines in my office. The machines generally detect the new stick and update themselves. Granted, these are all newer machines than mine and I am not upgrading them, just replacing defective RAM.

Thank you both for your assistance in this and I apologize in advance if I am seeming to be a bit of a dolt here.

I never said to enter the BIOS, though. I said that you should reset it to its default values.

If you can't ACCESS the BIOS, remove the CMOS battery for ~10 seconds or find the CMOS reset jumper/switch.Oops, got to be careful with that Evelyn Wood speed-reading!

I will try to reset the BIOS when I get home tonight and see if that does anything. I still am unsure that even that would help it run the 3200 card, but 2 sites have now said it should and who am I to argue.Quote

I hate to be redundant but what does guaranteed compatibility mean to you?
GX_1, if you read further on their guarantee, all it says is guaranteed compatible or your money back. Well, I can get that from Fry's or CompUSA also without having to mail stuff back and forth. HP and that site both said 3200 speed RAM would work and it didn't, so the guarantee doesn't mean much to me...convenience is much more important.Well we know that THAT 3200 did not work, but I don't know that we can make a global generalization.
So even after looking at the specs of the motherboard, you still think a different 3200 speed card would work?I think a guaranteed compatible one is worth a shot.Well, I guess I will give it one more shot. It's gotta be cheaper than the 64 port card in our switch that I just swapped out...of course that wasn't my money!

Solve : Monitor won't turn on after hard drive crash?

Answer»

I have several problems with my machine, and they don't seem to match up with the forum answers. My hardware specs are off of memory; I'll try to update after I get home.

OS: Windows XP SP2
Video: NVidia GEForce 5200
Audio: Creative Live! 5.1
Processor: Athlon XP 3000+ ()
Motherboard: Viper () MicroATX
Old HDD: Maxtor 40GB, ~2002
New HDD: Western Digital 160GB, bought yesterday

For about two years, my computer has often had trouble coming out of sleep mode. I believe this started after I replaced my power supply with an Antec 350W (??.) I don't have the exact model with me, but I'll try to get it when I get home.

Since my computer wouldn't come out of sleep mode, I'd have to reboot and go through Scan Disk for a couple of years now. in the last four weeks, Scan Disk has started to find several errors. It erased the ENTIRE folder of Internet Explorer, and it found several other problems. After a 30-minute Scan Disk, my computer would START to load XP and then reboot. Since Windows didn't load completely, Scan Disk would run again. This process would repeat until I turned the system off at the power button, waited five minutes, and then started again (booted with no problems). If I also did this when the computer went to sleep, often I could skip the Scan Disk and load straight into Windows.

Yesterday, my machine completed the BIOS startup and then hung. It gave me the "missing or corrupted hal.dll" message, and I decided to reinstall XP. When I put in the disk (upgrade from 98) and chose Setup, the program told me that it couldn't find XP on my hard drive. When I rebooted and selected Recovery, I changed to the C: drive and tried dir. I was told there was a problem with drive enumeration.

At this point I assumed that my hard drive failed, so I bought a new one and installed it in the chassis. Now when I boot up the computer, I get the POST beep, but the monitor never turns on. I removed all other cards (audio card, Speedstream wireless B card) except the graphics card. Monitor didn't turn on. I moved the monitor from the video card to the motherboard's onboard VGA port. Monitor didn't turn on. I disconnected the new drive and reconnected the old drive. Monitor didn't turn on.

I've actually had this monitor problem before; it seems like anytime I've replaced a motherboard/processor, I had to reboot several times before the monitor would click on. This happened with my old CRT as well as my newer (~2005) LCD, and it happened with my current video card and my previous (Voodoo 3?). Eventually it would turn on, and then I wouldn't have a problem again until the next time I tinkered in my case. I don't have another monitor or computer to try swapping out, although I'll keep trying. I don't think my graphics card suddenly went bad, and it seems unlikely that the monitor would as well. Again, the POST completes fine; the monitor just won't turn on.

Questions:
1. Has anyone experienced this kind of intermittent monitor problem before? Could its failure to turn on be related to what I believe was a hard drive failure?

2. Assuming I can figure out the monitor problem, can Windows 98 be installed on a 160GB drive? Since I only have the XP upgrade, I'd have to first install 98 and then upgrade to XP. Would it be better to upgrade to Vista?

3. Since the computer was working fine in the years previous to this problem, is the refusal to exit sleep mode most likely related to the power supply? Is there a fix for this?

Sorry for the long message - I'm pretty frustrated here.In answer to #2 you do not have to install Win98 first...just insert the CD when the XP install asks for it...I brought my computer into the lab and checked the monitor. My monitor works when hooked up to another computer; another good monitor does not work when connected to my motherboard port or graphics card port. It doesn't work with EITHER the new hard drive connected, the old hard drive connected, or no hard drive connected (other monitor never turns on.)

Is my mobo fried? I am short on money, and I don't want to replace anything I don't need to...I would try swapping in a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage befor suspecting the MBoard...I figured out what the problem is, kind of...Sometimes the monitor won't turn on if the graphics card is installed, and sometimes it will. I took out the graphics card and used the onboard VGA port, and it turned on right away. I reinstalled Windows (thanks for the tip about not having to install 98 first) and installed all my other hardware.

Now the computer is working with the graphics card installed again, although I don't know why it does sometimes and doesn't OTHERS. Anyway, thanks for the help. The vid card could have become unseated in working in the case or the contacts were dirty and re-seating it moved the gunk around.
But good to hear you are up and running...

Solve : computer won't start?

Answer»

Pentium 4 3.6GHz
Windows XP Media Center
ATI Radeon X1600
250 GB HD
2GB RAM

When I turn on my computer it loads Windows and then the Welcome screen with user login (when it is working correctly it usually skips the user login screen and goes DIRECTLY to desktop). I try to click on my name to log in and it will briefly flash my desktop background and then log off. I tried to start in Safe Mode but the same thing happens. Even after starting and restarting it several times nothing else happens.

In the last 2 weeks I've added a gig of RAM and upgraded my graphics card but had some problems getting it to work so I had to take it to Best Buy and they changed the BIOS settings. A few days ago I added a Netgear Rangemax 250 adapter for my router. I accidently unplugged the HD fan a week ago when I added a small fan for the graphics card and it has been running like that all week. I also upgraded my Sony Vegas program last night. I have been playing an online game that uses a LOT of resources and a couple of times got a Runtime error msg but a lot of people in the game have been complaining about that so I didn't think it was that important. I got one last night before I shutdown my computer but other than that didn't have any problems with it. I don't know if any of this is useful but I thought I should add every thing I could think of. If there is any important information I've left out of my description please let me know.

If ANYONE can think of anything I can try before taking it in to get fixed I'd reallly appreciate.
Thankyou,

Melanie

I'd recommend not playing any more online games. It is too easy for SOMEONE to connect to your computer and mess with it when you do. Some of the symptoms you DESCRIBE might be caused by such an intrusion. Buy a game system without a hard drive to with which to play online games, instead.
Good advice, as always, Doc! Quote

yeah it has a hd fan. I unplugged it on accident. It's a Sony Vaio. It came that way.

Learned from experience. You should see some of the stuff people whom i ticked off in chat ROOMS could do to my system! Mostly harmless things like restarting my computer of opening dozens of web browsers, but it taught me that someone who wanted to do harm could.

Solve : New Motherboard and Processor?

Answer»

hi and hello,

I currently and a ASUS P4S800D-X Motherboard and a Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz processor. (at least thats what I'm reading off the box)

I want to upgrade my processor to SOMETHING better. I've been slowly upgrading all the hardware in my computer, and I think the processor has GOT to be next.

Can anyone tell me what I can buy? Im looking to spend average price for a processor, whatever that may be."Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4 / Celeron processors with speeds up to 3.06 GHz+"

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTU0That's an old motherboard, you'll have trouble finding a good CPU for that.
If I were you I'd replace both the motherboard and CPU, but it depends on your budget and your other components.
If you've already upgraded everything else, it's likely you'll need to throw it all out for a new motherboard.
What do you have right now?"What do you have right now?"

ive only upgraded the video card and the network card so far. the video card is a Radeon X1300 AGP slot. Linksys Wireless-N PC adapter.

some stats off the back of the box on the motherboard are

"AGP 8X", 8 UBS 2.0 Ports, a Serial ATA ports, dual-channel DDR400....

Im not sure what this all means. I was told id probably have to replace the motherboard as well if i wanted a new processor. whats the price check on that?If you want a decent new CPU, you will need a new motherboard.
Unfortunately, you will also need a new video card.
Whereabouts are you in the world?
What sort of budget are you working with?
And what do you want this PC for?*sighs* lol figures.

I'm in Ohio, USA.

The computer is for gaming, internet, writing school papers...... lol

budget... right now open. Like i said i want to pay average price for the components. I paid like 130$ for the video card. but as for the others... i dont know how they range. If the PC is for gaming, you'll definitely want a better video card, even if you didn't need one for a new motherboard.
Go to the FAQ section, then Hardware, and check out the GPU FAQ, which covers all but the newest video cards. I'm sick of saying that so I'll update it soon.

I don't know about US prices because I'm in the UK.
A QUICK search on newegg, which seems to be popular over there, reveals around $200 for a good CPU and $140 for a good motherboard.
Those estimates are probably high, and you can always DOWNGRADE a little if you want to spend less.Quote from: Kiitta on May 26, 2007, 01:30:28 PM

Solve : color profile invalid when installing printer?

Answer»

:-? I was running a HP7150 printer perfectly well on my windows xp but I then decided to purchase an all in one Hp F380. When I tried to install it after connecting the usb I received the error mesage from install wizard that it cannot install be Thespecified color profile is invalid. I contacted HP deleted all printers and started again but was still unable to install same error. I have tried loading win color manger program but recieve an error with that. I do not have Diamond compatible 9300K G2.2 ICM in my list which HP say I need. I bought my comp from Tiny who did nopt give me a windows xp disk and are bust. I have also installed a debugger program but still with no joy. Please this is my third day trying I am pulling my hair out. I have even tried to put my old printer back on but am now receiving same error message for that. HELP.......Are you running Win XP, with SP2?yes windows xp home edition and I have REINSTALLED windows sp2 to see if installing
would make a differnce but it hasn't. I have managed to install a very old printer via the
the printer port rather than usb but I still only have three options in the color management
kodak, srgb and ICII really don't understand your issue. I have three printers installed in my Win XP system. For all of them, the Color Management tab of the printer Properties panel is basically the same. In each case, the box for Automatic is checked. Automatic means "Windows will automatically select the best color profile from the list of associated color profiles."

You said you have "three options in the color management kodak, srgb and ici". Are you talking about profiles? How many profiles do you need?

Your Hp F380 is a fairly new printer, right? Did you use the CD that came with it to install the printer?

You might visit this HP printer forum: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=218
Yes used cd installed to the letter and after connect usb I receive the error message cannot install printer error
The specified color profile is invalid. I have been in touch with HP and they say its a operating system fault. I bought my comp from tiny who have gone bust and do not supply you with thw windows xp cd. any ideas nothing on that website to do with color profiles that I can seeWell, since you reinstalled SP2, I'm skeptical of HP's ASSERTION that "its a operating system fault." Other than this printer issue, are you having any other problems with your computer?

Here's a Google find, Understanding Printer Colour Management, which says, "Almost all contemporary printers ship with profiles for their inks and that manufacturer's popular papers. These are usually installed automatically when you install the printer driver." Therefore, I think this is a seldom encountered issue; most computer users simply install the software that came with their printer, which installs the necessary color profile, and there's no problem.

For more references, Google printer color profiles or something similar.

Anyone else have some thoughts on this?

I would go to add/remove programs and remove any HP software and try re-installing.Thanks everyone for your suggestions Result by RELOADING old HP rinter via printer port removing nad reinstalling windows sp2 and hey presto printer is now working. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions

Solve : Can i merge two hard drives??

Answer»

have searched for the answer to this for months. I give. I need to ask:

At work ran a gateway, 650 mhz, celeron processor, One day it locked up. Shut it down and on reboot it lost it's printer, Lexmark, X63 USB. Did recognize there was something PLUGGED in but could not id it. Found the driver disk and re-installed it. It showed the printer program, showed the printer, but 'print' would not work. It would show it spooling but the printer never responded. Tried a new cord. Nothing. BUt i did notice what when ever I would plug the USB cord from the printer into USB port on the gateway there was a tiny spark. Not a good thing I am sure. They are intergrated USB ports and while I could use them for mouse and keyboard I could not use any of them for the printer. Gave up and brought my old Compaq, 90 mhz, AMD processor, in. Bought a new printer. Now I could print but all of my info was on the old computer. Could not transfer, no parallel port for transfer. I installed the current program that we had recently purchased for our invoices, installed those back up discs and I was off and running. The current invoice program showed all the info from the back up disk but the program would shut off often. This is time dated software (license expires in 365 DAYS) and I did notice that it reset the time remaining. But it was working and i could print out invoices. But now I need the info from the Gateway and it needs to be printed. I have back up files for the obsolete peachtree program they are using but need the program. They do not have the original software. I tried to install the new printer on the Gateway but only succeeded in blowing the power supply. Now I can not even look at the info. Finally DECIDED to take the Gateways hard drive, pulled out the hard drive in the Compaq and made the swap. Worked great. But now I need the information for the the new program on this drive. My Compaq did not have extra cords for another drive but someone said that I could pull the plugs froms the CD writer and use them I reinstalled the Compaq hard drive.. booted to MAKE sure it worked. Pulled the cord from the CD writer and plugged in the Gateway hard drive(set the pin to a slave) and rebooted. It shows both drives but on the gateways hard drive it does not show the Peachtree program or new invoice program.
I have no idea what to do?! Any suggests?!

I am lost ..

PS. both are running ME
To run the old software program on a new machine you have to have the install disks, as Windows scatters the necessary files all over your drive.

You can save the data in a variety of ways-back up to a USB pen drive , zip drive, slave that hard drive in a new machine, etc. As to why the program seems to be missing, I don't know unless something was deleted. If the USB sparked there may be other issues as well.

It sounds like the Gateway has a LOT of problems and may not be salvageable, at least with this install. I guess you could TRY reinstalling Windows and hope for the best. Do you have the Windows CD?

Solve : Y wont my video card work??????

Answer»

hey guys i just brought a new video card today and it wont work in my computer but when i plugged it into my other computer it works so mayb i thought it was the power supply so i swapped it and still NOTHING yet other cards work fine in my system any help??

my specs are :
Gigabyte MOTHERBOARD
1.8ghz core 2 duo cpu
512mb MSI 7600GT video (the ONE that wont work)
512mb ram
200gb hddIs it plugged in correctly?
Check the connections, and check the card for any signs of damage.
What motherboard are you using?no there is no damage and yes it is plugged in correctly the computer starts up but the monitor wont switch on but it does with my older video card

the mother board is a Gigabyte 9VM800PMCYour 7600GT, is that a PCI-E card?No it's AGPI was about to say, your motherboard only has AGP so that could have been the problem.
Try another monitor with that video card.I thought perhaps your motherboard had integrated/onboard
video and the BIOS setting isn't correct.

Have you checked that? Also'imanidiot',you are not an idiot. You should meet
my pet bird.

Good day to you Calum.Could be that too, good suggestion.
Good day to you too street1.You alluded to the PSU, but gave no details. What is the make, wattage and age of it?ok thanks guys i will cheak the bios but how? lol last time i stuffed AROUND with the bios my pc wouldnt boot up!!! hence the name imanidiot also my power supply is an omni 500w and the model is: omni PS-ATX 500W. hope that helpsOmni doesn't exactly inspire confidence on this end.
Most BIOS's will RECOGNISE an external card being added and disable the onboard video...
However if you do want to play around in there make sure to write down any and all changes you make to prevent a reoccurence of the first magnitude.

Solve : IDE hard disk showing as SCSI?

Hi a couple of days AGO I took the plunge and built my own system which consists of.

E6300 dual core.
GA-965p-ds4 motherboard
700w ezcool infinity power supply
Gainward 7900gs vga
Corsair value 667 1gb mem
samsung sata DVD drive

I have used my hard drives from my previous case which are both ata drives (120g ibm deskstar as master IC35L120 and a MAXTOR 250g 6L250RO as slave). When I intially stated up the system it would not boot into windowsxp home and i had to do a reinstall as I wanted to keep all the info.

The pc now boots fine into windows but seems very slow I have done a online test at pcpitstop and it is reporting that my hard drives are running EXCEPTIONALLY slow. After looking at device manager they are both showing a scsi devices. I have tried checking the jumper settings and reinstalling IDE controllers to chnge this, but no success.

Do you think that this problem of IDE disks showing as scsi is slowing my system

Any pointers would be greatfully appreciated.Have a read:

Quad cores defined

Clear as mud now

By: Charlie Demerjian Saturday 04 November 2006, 08:23

WE ARE ABOUT to enter a PR battle of epic proportions about quad core. No, not performance, abilities, price or anything else real, just over the definition.
Intel says it has a quad core first, and AMD says no it doesn't. Intel says it is selling a real quad core and AMD says it not. Both are right in both cases.

The crux of the argument is simple, Intel's quad core parts are TWO Woodcrests on a slab of fiberglass, and the two dice are separated by almost a cm of space. Single chunk of silicon they are not. If asked, Intel will tell you that any customer buying a Kentsfield or Clovertown will have four cores under a heat spreader, and 99.999% of them will never take that off, so functionally it is a four core. You buy it as such, you PLUG it in as such, and it operates as such.

AMD will laugh and point to Barcelona and say that Intel has a nasty hack. Your chunk of silicon has two cores on it or it has four. Your bus sees it as one load or two. It is that simple.

So, which one is it? Well, both and neither. My definition is quite simple, does any core have to go out across the bus to talk to any of the other cores? If so, it is not a quad core part. Does it matter to the consumer? Not a bit, this is only a strictly technical definition.

If people buy a box that says 'contains four CPUs, it is just that, it has four cores. If it is one or two chunks of silicon under the spreader, who cares? Does it perform? If so, then the layout is totally irrelevant. Kentsfield does perform, and you can see four cores under TASK Manager. Could it be a few per cent better if it was on a PIECE of silicon? Probably, but who cares?

So, from a functional perspective, Intel has a quad core part. From a technical perspective, it doesn't, and AMD will be the only one to have that for over a year. Geeks debate the technical perspective, people buy on the functional perspective. That is the end of that, right?

Not so fast my fine asocial friend, there is another wrinkle to this. If you buy the Intel functional argument you basically buy a box and it does a job, so where does it leave 4x4? You buy a box with four cores in it, it is sold as one piece, and has four cores in Task Manager. 99 per cent of people will never open the box other than to see what they bought, so for all they know, it could be magic beans powering the thing. Windows says four cores.

So, if you buy the AMD view, no one has four cores until Barcelona launches. If you buy the Intel view, it was first, but AMD will be less than a month behind. Your CALL. In any case, Sun can laugh at them all, it has had eight real cores by either definition for over a year, and IBM has done the MCM thing to more than that. Intel and AMD both lose. µ

Do you think as moderator you can do something to help others like me , now that you are seized of the issue.

OK. Everyone be careful on your "Finalize the Disk" settings.

How's that?Thanks PATIO,

I will do as you say and get back to you with the result.

Incidentally even though I see on the blank the bold RW engraved ,it is only DVD+Recordable[this is what is engraved in small letters below the bold RW].

Would your advice hold good if my DISC is DVD+R only?

I quote:
http://www.moserbaer.com/products_faqs.asp#b4

""does finalizing (and closing and fixating) do?
A disc that you can add data to is "OPEN". All data is written into the current session. When you have finished writing, you close the session. If you want to make a multi-session disc, you open a NEW session at the same time. If you don't open a new session then, you can't open one later, which means that it's impossible to add more data to the CD-R. The entire disc is considered "closed".

The process of changing a session from "open" to "closed" is called "finalizing", "fixating", or just plain "closing" the session. When you close the last session, you have finalized, fixated, or closed the disc.""

http://www.moserbaer.com/products_faqs.asp#b4

I am giving above the FAQ answer relevent to the issue taken from the URLhttp://www.moserbaer.com/products_faqs.asp#b4 of the manufacturer MOSERBAER.

Can the bosses of this Forum take up with such manufacturers to not have such "FINALITY" and lose the rest of the disc and go for buying the next one so that his sales multiplies. The manufactures should and must make a provision to reverse the "FINALITY" if the user desires to, whether the user 'finalises' intentionally or inadvertantly.

We had a locking device in floppy discs to prevent erasures. We could unlock it if we wanted. Why this finality for these discs? Any locking method -mechanical or softwarewise should be unlockable. What would you all say?

Solve : Power Supplies?

Greetings, I hope someone can help me.

Can you replace a 300watt PS, with a larger one, without causing trouble?

Just REPLACED this PS, SIX months ago. 300watt.

Have since remoced two 40 gig HDs and replaced them

with one 80gig unit.

System has been acting sluggish, and this morning would not start.

Figure my PS went South last night.

James
You didn't say what brand of 300w. PSU you got. An el cheapo Chinese POS 800w PSU is worse than a 350 watt Antec. You get what you pay for.

Some info about ALL of the components would be helpful. What exactly is covered by "would not start"? TOTALLY dead? A few lights but no boot?

Details, details. See below.
I am not being smart here, but my question was,

Can I put a larger Power Supply in my PC, without causing any problems???

Like going from 300watts to a 400watt unit.

I am at the library, using a PC,

When I pushed the start botton, to turn on the power, nothing happened.

No lights, humming, sound thru the speakers, nada. As you put it "Totally Dead".

The PS was purchased at Comp USA, could not tell you who made it.

Dell PC
200gig
Intell
80gig HD
DVD
CD-R

Thats all I am rembering right now.

Hope that helps

The short answer is yes, you can, as long as you have the appropriate ADAPTER for your specific mother board - 20 vs. 24 pin.

The wattage is not an issue.

Hope that helps. Get a good book to read while you're there. GX1_Man.

?Appropriate adapter for your specific mother board - 20 vs. 24 pin?

THOUGHT all Powes Supplies, had all the fittings or plugs, and adaptors needed.

How do you know what you need?

Look at your motherboard, or at the main (large) connector from the previous PSU, or check the specs from the motherboard maker's site from the library computer. (You didn't say what it was.)

No, there are two possibilities. Don't buy the wrong thing. Thank You for the help. You're welcome and keep us posted on your progress.

nothing realy happened i reinstalled windows and it started problem, i wasn't tinkering around the tower last time it didn't work was 10-03-2006, 08:33 PM, it was fixed by removing a ram chip and the problem started again today, here is the link to the forum that i posted my other problem on http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/motherboards-bios-cpu/119573-need-help-please-help-me-my-problem.html
I think this response from the other forum speaks volumes:

First of all I feel your PAIN. If I read RIGHT...we almost have the exact same stuff, along with almost the same problem. I have ben to almost every forum on the web trying to find help with this. When I did a google search on the Abit SG80DC and Pentium D 840...a whole crap load of pi$$ed off folks showed up with mucho complaints.

Like I mentioned above thats my MB/CPU...also have 512 Meg of pc3200 400MHz RAM. I bought this bundle off of TigerDirect.com. Well...this bundle of joy landed on my doorstep yesterday, and I have been beating my head against my desk ever since.

My issue is I am unable to load Win XP onto a brand new HD. I have switched HD's. What happens is, when there is about 9 minutes left of the Windows load process...my machine reboots, then starts al over. I have attempted default & optimized BIOS settings. I have three fans running, any my system temp is in the 30's C, and the CPU 49 C. So heat is not my issue. I am thinking that it's just a COMPATIBILITY issues between the Abit, and the Pentium D 840.

Did you contact Tigerdirect under your warranty? You may be stuck trying to make something work that never will. I hope it's not too late.I FOUND OUT THE ANSWER!!!! tigerdirect.com is replaceing everyones MB with a new BIOSTART MB b/c they made a bad combo on the barebones i bought so i am okie dokie thanks all for your help!!!Well that is indeed good news for you. I am sorry it took so long and was so much grief in the meantime, but am glad you followed through with this. Come back if you have other issues.

Solve : PC Components?

Answer»

Hey everyone. =)

I've been looking around for new parts for a PC, but half of the lingo is still a bit double-dutch to me. I'm just wondering if anyone would mind taking the time to tell me if these parts would actualy work together before I end up throwing money down a hole. Any help would be very appreciated. =)

Graphics card

Motherboard

CPU

RAM

And finally, the thing to make it all go:

Power supply

Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated.Looks good. I'd get another brand of videocard, though. XFX or ASUS.Quote

What are u smoking ?
that one is just fine! :-/I don't see case fans listed there. Are you putting this into a case that already has fans? If not, you should THINK about putting a couple in. i think thats a given, he's interested in the hardware aspects.
maybe he can post his case?
Oh yes, the case. The one I'm currently using is about 7 years old and pretty battered, so I was looking to buy a new one anyway.

As for the fan, would a 12cm one built-in to the new case be enough? Or should I grab an extra fan on top of it?

And THANKS for the help guys, makes me feel a lot more confident in what I'm buying. =) Just gotta search around to get the absolute best price now. =)There is some difficulty in getting a motherboard that fits the case properly and the power supply plug needs to match the receptacle on the board. Many motherboards today have onboard video, sound and ethernet card. If it doesn't make sure there are 4 or 5 pci slots to plug cards into. the power supply has a fan in it, the cpu needs a fan and the chassis needs a fan. The case should have adequate ventilation slots for air to move in and out. Some are badly designed.

Alright, well u got a pretty good system.

2 things u MUST change:

-CPU: Core 2 Duo E6300 for 125$ can be overclocked to be even better than the FX-62 (not to mention MUCH better than the CPU u have written)

-Graphics Card: The 7950 GT is a good card, but the 7900 GTO is even better for 50$ less (2 companies put it out in order to get rid of their G71 chips). It even beats the X1900XT 512MB in price!!

This means u have to change the motherboard aswell. X975XBX is a good choice, but id wait for nForce 690 SLI motherboards.I have the ASUS A8N-SLI . The book recommends a minimum of 600 watts, so what you have listed should be good.Quote

I'm SORRY Raptor, but u are mistaken. There is no such thing as "high quality" graphics cards, as each manufacturer produces the exact same product in the end.

XFX is a company that sells u 2 things - a graphics card.. and its name. For some reason, the XFX cards are more expensive than any other company, and far more expensive than companies like Leadtek and Connect3D who make quality cards (just like XFX), but for a lot less.

Solve : a:drive?

Answer»

Hi everyone!
When I log off my computer, the a:drive LED light comes on and blinks a few times. then it makes a wierd noise, as if the computer is trying to communicate with the drive. This also happens when I turn off my computer. Can anyone please help. By the way, I am running win xp home edition. Thank you .
Has it always been this way? If not, what has changed? WHat antivirus are you using?Hi there,
No, it hasn'nt always been this way. I think it started when I used my antivirus program and the program I use it NOD32. Do you think this may have something to do with itCheck the settings for NOD32, it may have an option to check DISKS in drives when logging off
I only say this because Avast! antivirus, which I used to use, had that option and it caused much the same thing to happen
It REALLY annoyed me, especially as I never left disks in any drive when logging off, so I set it to not do itAs a quick fix try leaving a blank floppy disk in the drive (it might be faster to read that then to search and find no disk) and change the floppy disk boot options. Not to sure how to change the floppy disk boot option. Can someone help. Thanks!Even though you are not installing this program, the info on this page will help you adjust the boot order SAFELY. Just make floppy LAST in your CASE. CD first, hard drive second.

Solve : Clearing Cmos with power attached?

Answer»

Ok! I mistakenly did something that it recommends you don't do. I set the jumper to clear CMOS with the POWER attached and now the system powers up but does absolutely nothing. Did I fry the motherboard or is there something less serious that can be done?ove all power sources and remove the CMOS battery for 10 minutes...replace plug in and power up....does this help ? ?
Why were you CLEARING the CMOS ? ?I installed a promise card to add another hard drive. It created problems so I removed it and then found that the there was a startup problem and cleared the CMOS which fixed the problem.

Got a second Promise card and tried again, same thing only forgot the power when clearing the CMOS.

Tried the battery, no change in status. The Promise drivers need to be installed and then you have to enter setup to enable the DEVICE in the BIOS...hey mate same problem happened with me when tryin to clear my cmos i even took the battery out for 20mins and still nothing so all i did was thought stuff it so i took it back out and then just left it sit overnight and waa LAA in th morning plugged it back and and it booted fine try that and see what happensWill try it and see. I have removed the promise card and gone back to ORIGINAL configuration and just want the system to start up. Hope the overnight will work otherwise I have an excuse for an upgrade.

Solve : averatec 5100 laptop will not turn on?

Answer»

Hi everyone my laptop will not power on at all. no lights turn on or blink. I know its not the cord and i have tried it with and without the battery. Any ideas? I have an idea. You need to post a LOT more information. See below.

All we know is that you have a laptop.Well, I couldn't find much information concerning your laptop but have you checked the troubleshooting part in your manual that came with the laptop?

Sometimes, if the battery dies in a laptop it won't turn on anymore. So you might have to buy a new battery but lets not go to that conclusion yet.

If you don't have your manual anymore you can view it at the link below:
http://www.averatec.com/customercare/manuals.asp

Also, a little more information would help like, when did this happen? Did it randomly kick out and give an error message or just not boot up one day? Do you keep it plugged into a surge protector or anything to protect the laptop from a power surge? Any information you think will possibly help, post it because the more info the faster your problem is solved.

-Mikehmm GX1_Man a lot more like what? My title stats the laptop type and the BODY states the problem. I mean I am not an expert so maybe you can be more specific as to what more I need to say besides the type of laptop and the problem.

well the operating system is xp and nope no prior problems.Quote

OK yay thanks mike didnt see ur previous post ok well here goes...
it wasnt plugged into the wall it was turned off and when i tried to turn it back on it wouldnt. No error messeges and nope no surge protector but i used it the day before.I just FOUND a link to the Averatec Unofficial forums, I suggest posting there as well and someone else did a post there about not being able to get the 5100 working.

http://www.averatecforums.com/ok thx i will check it outWell I'm not sure how to fix your laptop, but Google has been giving me lots of "hits" about laptop repairs. I'll post a couple for you to read.

Even if a site isn't about your laptop, some of the information COULD apply to you though.Another good idea would be to look in the manual that came with the Laptop, and see what it says in the troubleshooting section. If you don't have a manual for your laptop there is a link to one in my original RESPONSE.

Solve : Video Controller (VGA Compatible) not installing?

Answer»

Okay, so I just performed a format/re-install of windows xp pro with sp2.

Now, stupid me, I forgot to remove my video card (radeon 9800 series) from the system at the time of re-install, and now my computer thinks it is the default video card, as well as it's detecting the monitor plugged in (LG FLATRON) as a default monitor, and I can't install the driver for that either. . I know I have an S3 ProSavage DDR 32mb onboard video, and my mobo is the u8668d from Biostar. My system itself is a tagar.

Anyway, I've downloaded the ATI Catalyst Controller, but it doesn't even detect that I have one of their CARDS installed. When I try to use my onboard video, there is no output at all. I've downloaded the driver for the onboard, but it will not let me install it (Check the progress log in your windows directory for more details it what it spits out for the reason.)

My question is this: Is there any way I will be able to recover my system without another format? And if not that's fine, but how am I supposed to format my machine if there is no output from my onboard video?

I should also add that this does hinder my abilities to browse the computer, as everything moving is rather laggy.

I've removed the controller from the device manager, as well as reseated the AGP Video card.

I do not have the recovery cd.

Oh, and my ram is one 256 stick and one 512.

Thanks,
BrandonIs this what you downloaded: Catalyst 6.10 Windows XP - Driver Download

I'm not familiar with ATI's drivers but apparently you NEED to download two or three files, depending on whether you get your downloads under the Broadband options or the Dialup options. Exactly what did you download?I downloaded that, as well as the .NET Framework (and installed it).2 DAYS and still no REPLY. Awesome.

I figured it out on my own, but that's just not cool.

later. The thing with forums is that responses depend on the topic and who happens to drop by to view it and if they are interested to reply. If there are no replies, then the topic drops to page 2 (or 3) and many casual viewers just miss it.

I'm glad you GOT it sorted out though. What was the solution?Quote

Solve : Dual Core Questions?

Answer»

I just bought a 1.6ghz dual core laptop and have a COUPLE questions

1. how much faster (ect.) is a dual core to single 1.6 ghz cpu

2. I use Process explorer and was thrilled to find it works on Vista, I gives you the ability to set Affinity for any given process cpu 1, 2, 1+2. So what I do sometimes is set Explore affinity to 1 cpu instead of default 1+2 and raise Explorer's priority to above normal or high... It gives a good improvement so my question is could this dammage the cpu ect. or is this what its designed to do, and if so is there a certain way i should configure rather than the default all programs using both cpu'sAlso is this 2 cpu's that equal 1.6 ghz or 2 individual 1.6 ghz cpu's2 x 1.6. NOT 3.2.This laptop's gonna land in the shop pretty soon...Dual core 1.6 is two processors working at 1.6GHz, not 3.2GHz or 2 processors that equal 1.6GHz.
It will help when doing multiple TASKS or working with multi-threaded applications, but not when only doing one thing.Got it. THNX
You're welcome.

Solve : MB & Computer Case Compatibility?

The case I was planning on getting specifies motherboard compatability as being 12" x 9.6" ATX. The MB I am leaning towards is 12" x 8", will these work together?

ANTEC Case;
GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 MB;
Pentium D 935 Presler 3.2GHz 2 x 2MB L2 (64BIT);
2GB memory;
Microsoft Windows XP Professional X64 SP2B;
SATA HD, two DVD-RW & floppy drive.

Mainly interested in comments on the guts of the system - MB, PROCESSOR, OS.

thanks,As long as it is not a BTX board. It is an ATX board.JohnnyD1220 ....... If it's an ATX case and a ATX board ...... things should be compatible.

Solve : GPU Instalation Problems :(?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I just put together my NEW PC, done it a couple of times.

My Nvidia 7900GTX wouldn't even boot, I'm beggining to worry its gone, just want to ask wise ones out there.

System specs:
Asus M2N32- SLI Deluxe
Amd Athlon FX 64 dual core FX62
2 gb corsair ddr2 800mhz memory
psu 650w with 30 Amp on 12V ( so enough power here)
SINGLE GPU setup
win xp + sp 2

I have tried to connect power to the card with 6 pin connector ( I used 2x 3 pin connectors from psu) when i connected everything frikkin pc wouldnt even start, just blinked and nothing.
So, 6pin connector goes out of the window, right I did unpugged it.
Now computer boots up normally, everything is working normal, except i have eye cancer now from 60hz monitor frequency.

Interesting part is when i start computer , right at the beggining it doesnt say anything about graphic card inside. I tried to change it for pci mx nvidia and information shows up as usual.

Ok so with 6pin power cable unplugged win xp loads up, and im trying to install drivers, no luck because on ORIGINAL xp win cd there are no compactible drivers. Hmpfff

In properties it says default monitor on, nothing about graphics card.

I'm running mad here, please advise.

Thanks a lot!!!

You need to DOWNLOAD drivers from the manufacturer.. Why'd you bother with crappy windows drivers when you spend a lot of money on your system?

You can probably find drivers for your monitor as well, if you dislike the refresh rate problem, get an LCD screen. They all run at 60Hertz, but you don't get a headache from 'm..
What brand of PSU did you buy?Hello Raptor,
thanks for your reply.
To the drivers:
Ofc I downloaded latest nvidia drivers. Thing is when i try to install them, its saying that: There are no compactible hardware.

I have nvidia 7900 gtx and I downloaded from nvidia site selecting geeforce go 7000 series, so I hope that should be right. (it's 84.63_forceware_mobile_winxp2k_internat ional_whql ).

Yea and problem with flat screen is being resolved.

Erm, brand of PSU is win something, its nothing fancy, but from the look of it its ok quality

The thing that is cocerning me is that right after powerin up, information about gpu won't SHOW up. The one which appears before bios.

Then in the hardvare profiles theres obviously question mark, and when i try and run instalation of the driver is says same thing.

Thanks for help.Quote

Notice the mobile?

You downloaded the 7 series drivers.. Those are for laptops.

Information not showing doesn't really matter, your monitor might not be turned on fast enought to display it. 'Happens.yea i thought that was weird hehe
solved now

*bangs head Come back anytime.thanks for your help guys.
found out it is nvidia quadro fx 4500, do any of you know if its more powerfull than nvidia geeforce 7900 gtx?
for games rather than proffesional use

mike You would need to check the specific games requirements from the manufacturer's site, on the box, etc. Powerful has nothing to do with it.

Solve : Power supply question.?

Answer»

I'm trying to figure out what kind of power supply to get 'cause my motherboard needs a special kind. I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box when it comes to building computers so I hope someone would be able to tell me what I need.

Here's my computer:

Motherboard: Asus PC-DL Deluxe
Processors: Dual Intel Xeon 2.4's
HDD: 320 GB Western Digital HARD Drive
RAM: 2x 512 Kingston something or other sticks
Video: GEFORCE FX 5200
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy Pro 2
Everything Else: 1 DVD-Rom Drive, 1 CD-RW/R Drive, 1 Floppy Drive, 3 fans

I know that the PC-DL Deluxe requires a special power supply, I'm just not really sure of the specifics, something about EPS or something like that, not really sure...

Anyways, I found this one http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=20551 and it seems about right. If anyone could let me know if this one is ok, or if anyone has any better suggestions, let me know. Thanks.

Oh PS.
Just a stupid question about power supplies. BUYING a power supply with too low of a wattage could obviously pose a problem because the devices might not be sufficiently powered, but is there anything wrong with buying a PSU with too high of a wattage (other than the possibility of paying too much)? Thanks.Oh, one more thing. I should probably mention that I intend sometime in the future to upgrade my graphics and possibly my sound card, so take that into consideration, thanks. That should be more than adequate and Antec is a solid brand. No, more power is not a bad thing.
